"The School of Social Science is proposing to phase out the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from 2025. We anticipate that Semester 2 2024 will be the final intake for these programs at UQ".
The rationale behind this is that the program is not financially viable, which highlights a frustrating trend in our society to value the bottom line over education and cultural richness. I believe, and I stand with many industry peers and UQ students in saying this; that prioritising financial incentive over quality programs will damage UQ's reputation, and affect our cultural industry.
If this is to go ahead, GLAM sector institutions will face an employment crisis, with incoming staff being either trained in an online setting from an open university-- affecting their industry experience and educational opportunities-- or face having to hire from graduates inter-state; this particularly poses issue as the GLAM sector staffing pool in QLD is already small, and phasing out the postgraduate Museum Studies Program at UQ will drastically affect the industry in years to come.
I love being a curator, and I appreciate the quality of education I have had in the Masters of Museum Studies program, particularly under the incredible tutelage of Eve Haddow Dr Caroline Wilson-Barnao and Diana J. B. Young.

First time posting on here so I'm not sure how much this qualifies. Recently, our college had us do a project making use of database systems (like SQL and stuff). My partner is admittedly far more skilled than me, and proposed a very complicated project that I had zero experience with. Still, I was ready to learn and fully willing to do my part. He said he'd take care of all of the back-end stuff, and that I'd do the front-end. For those who don't know, front-end is essentially what everyone sees when you open a website, the UI for it, while back-end is everything that goes on behind the scenes.
Cut to a week before the project submission. I finished up what was a decent prototype for the front-end that mostly matched the blueprints I'd designed and shown him and that he'd agreed upon. My partner wasn't too happy though, saying that this was way too simple and that he expected something far more complex from me. I told him I'd never done this before, and this already took me days of work to finish. Still, I did what I could to make it look even better. I sent the code to him, and asked him if he needed any help in combining the two. He remained quiet for a day, until the literal night before the deadline, where he told me he'd work on it overnight.
The day after, he came to college and told me that the front-end didn't work with his code at all. It worked fine with the basic code I'd written for it, but for some reason trying to combine it with the far more complex back-end, it just wasn't working. He apologized for saying I didn't do enough, because it was harder than he thought. Keep in mind, I gave him a fully working code. Hello all, I started working at an economic consulting firm right after college and am just about to finish up my third year there.
A lot of people I started with are leaving to go to grad school or to work for other firms and to be honest, I haven’t really thought about what I wanted to do next and so it prompted a bit of panic/crisis about which direction to take my career 😅😅 I liked the work a lot for the first couple years, but I’ve really soured on it these past few months (we had layoffs and a really stressful project where I was billing 80-90 hour weeks for like a month and a half). It’s getting better but I still think it may be time for a change.
While I’m not exactly sure what I want to do, one avenue that I’m curious about is data science/data analytics for a tech company. The company I work for now has a decent size network at Uber, Google, Meta, and other similar companies, so I know this is a transition that some people make. I wanted to ask if anyone on here has made a similar transition. If so, how does the work compare to economic consulting? What types of opportunities should I seek out at my current company to make myself more competitive? I’ve done some work with SQL and R, but nothing too advanced (basic grouping, joining, aggregating, summary stats, etc. and some regression analysis in R). Would I even be remotely qualified for a data analyst position? Or would I need more school/maybe a boot camp course to make the transition? Any advice would appreciated.

Does having ANY undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in computing science for me) open doors to jobs that wouldn't be open for someone with high school diploma and work experience or a trade certificate. My parents always thought it did which is why I have a degree in a field I can't work in anymore and generalized anxiety. I just don't think in todays job market that me having a degree in an unrelated field makes me a more attractive as a candidate, than someone who has basically my same work history. In fact even in my industry (Software Programmer) I don't think the degree means much. Would like to know if others have a better gage if this is true for hiring proposes.
I know the degree and work history ( I was a video game developer) has made me unattractive for many part time minimum wage positions so I was wondering if someone could suggest jobs that I could look at instead. I am interested in trying anything that is not programming/ i.t./network (basically anywhere that I am expected to computer at a higher level than excel sheets). I am not against using computer software and could leverage my skills that way. I would like to explore my career options broadly, but I'm concerned that my work history will keep me locked into working on a computer somehow.

A US lawmaker is accusing Amgen of “putting profits before patients” over its decision to continue marketing a high dose of a pricey cancer treatment instead of a lower dose that is less expensive and not as toxic to patients.ABOUT LUMAKRAS (sotorasib)
At issue is a medication called Lumakras, which is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer and which won conditional regulatory approval three years ago. At the time, the Food and Drug Administration required Amgen to run a trial confirming earlier test results, as well as a so-called post-marketing study to examine safety and effectiveness at different dosages, in order to gain full approval.
Last December, the agency determined the confirmatory trial was not acceptable and asked the company to run yet another trial, which must be completed by February 2028. Meanwhile, the company was allowed to continue offering a 960-mg dose of the drug, which the FDA originally did not believe was optimal, since a study released last October found its efficacy was similar to that of a 240-mg dosage.
Lumakras was approved by the FDA on 28 May 2021 as the first treatment for adult patients with non-small cell lung cancer whose tumors have genetic mutation KRAS G12C and who have received at least one prior systemic therapy. This was the first approved targeted therapy for tumors with any KRAS mutation, which accounts for approximately 25% of mutations in non-small cell lung cancers. KRAS G12C mutations represent about 13% of mutations in non-small cell lung cancers.Lumakras was approved under Accelerated Approval pathway and reviewed under Project Orbis, an initiative of FDA Oncology Center of Excellence, that allowed concurrent submission and review of marketing application by multiple regulatory agencies; besides FDA, the application was reviewed by UK MHRA, Brazilian ANVISA, Australia’s TGA, and Health Canada.
The approval was based on the study of 124 patients with locally advanced or metastatic KRAS G12C-mutated non-small cell lung cancer with disease progression after receiving an immune checkpoint inhibitor and/or platinum-based chemotherapy. The major outcomes measured were objective response rate (proportion of patients whose tumor is destroyed or reduced) and duration of response. The objective response rate was 36% and 58% of those patients had a duration of response of six months or longer. My whole life, I've been rejected. People don't see my potential. I've wasted a lot of time in my life. Currently, I have only 40 euros in my bank account. This is one of my darkest moments.
