Apologies for the strange size print but I could get it any other way. Above is an engineer spec for a future shop with an above living space. Is this something that would support an actual living space in the room pictured? I want to have a shop with an above apartment, fully furnished and livable. To me what is confusing is the loading pounds per sq ft (psf) area and the notes applying to loading to the bottom chord. What is the actual live load and dead load of the bottom chord of this truss? Tell me what you think of this: My 1902 barn is 20’ wide and 25’ deep. Gambrel roof, storage area on the second floor. The ceiling joists are 2”x7” actual running across the 20’ dimension. The beam running the 25’ dimension down the center was just a 4”x6” actual. The floor was pretty bouncy and had about a 4” sag.
Having read an article in Fine Homebuilding about box beams I had the idea of building a box beam out of a 25’ floor truss. I got a 25’ truss at a lumberyard that stocked them. It was 16” tall made from a 2x4 top and bottom chord with 2x2 diagonal web sections. I glued(PL Premium polyurethane glue) and screwed 13” wide 3/4” plywood to the webs, then glued and screwed 16” wide 3/4” plywood to the sides of the truss. Screws about every 4”. I let that cure for a couple of days then installed it next to the 4x6 beam. I put a post at one end and had a post cut for the other end ready to go. I needed to put a jack under the far end when it was about 2’ from where it needed to be. As I slowly jacked it up it lifted the floo4x6 beam as it went. Lots of creaking and groaning. By the time it was in position the floobeam was really straight. The sag was gone. I fit the post under, doubled the posts and bolted the new box beam to the old 4x6 beam.
Years later I built some dormers and made the upstairs of the barn into an in-law apartment. The floor feels solid. By the time the City saw it it was covered in Drywall and I think they assumed it was a steel beam. No one ever asked.
So my question to this group is: how strong is this box beam? It seems solid still, but I never consulted a SE. If I were to do something like this now I’d consult a SE but this was 25 years ago and I was young and poor.

2023.11.21 22:56 Locktapuss Gambrel roof Insulation & Vapor Barrier Questions

Hello, I live in the East Coast of Canada near the ocean so it can be cold and damp in the winter. I have a 12x16 gambrel shed (barn style) with a loft. I have a loft window as well as two windows in the front of the shed on the lower level & a double barn style door. I may in future add a gable vent on the other end (non loft side).
The roof of the shed is metal attached to osb. I plan to insulate the roof in the loft area with 1 1/2" rigid foam which will go up against the osb in the roof in between the trusses. After I put in the rigid foam insulation should I include a vapor barrier prior to adding wooden 1x6's that will go overtop the foam and be nailed to the trusses?

I have a customer that got upset the moment I put queen posts on my gambrel roof trusses, I guess he thought he would have more storage space or maybe he was going to rent it to someone to live in? Lol idk he's really concerned about the space, I frankly don't care, if that's what he wants I'll do it. Unless it will collapse in the next couple years. We have pretty minimal snow load here, about 20psf. It's a 10x20 shed with a 70 inch high mansard style roof. So the lower rafters are pretty steep. What do yall think?

2023.04.23 16:12 LeifCarrotson What foundation to use for 24x32 outbuilding - piers, footings + stemwalls, FPSF monolithic slab?

I'm looking to build a workshop/storage shed, and not sure that the typical pole barn construction with piers and 6x6 posts/laminated columns makes sense:
All three of those factors reduce the ostensible savings from limiting concrete to 9 posts:
There will be an entire slab floor poured over the handful of piers, and I don't want moisture and heaving if I just pour inside the skirt boards, so I need to excavate for perimeter insulation and pour lots of concrete anyways...might as well be a stem wall and footing, right?
I don't get to reduce the number of trusses because I need them for the attic subflooframing. I would need an LVL header to hold the trusses this if I have to span 8' or more, but I don't get significantly simplify/cheapen walls to girts and vertical metal because they need insulation and interior sheathing...might as well make them out of conventional 2x6 stud walls with double top plates and shear panels, right?
I'm in Michigan, climate zone 5a, with a 42" (probably should be 48") frost line, on an elevated region of gravel/sandy soil with good drainage.
Who should I talk to first to get advice on this - my concrete/excavation contractor? Township building department? Planning to DIY the framing and electrical (no wateseptic service) but contract out the foundation.

I'm planning to build a 10x12ish sized garden shed and would like to go with a gambrel roof design. One thing I'm wondering about and haven't really found any good info on is if the roof design should account for the reveal of the shingles so that they fold over the angled part of the truss nicely and adhere down with just the tar strip and not require exposed nails. Is that kind of thing something a typical design would normally try to incorporate to avoid that sort of situation?
I'm more of a cabinetry type woodworker than a framer so this is new to me, and perhaps I'm just overthinking it as well.

pre-purchase/info gathering. This is specifically for a 24k mrcool diy install. Since this is for a room in a shop, I'm going diy.. if it were for the whole shop or a house I'd probably just hire someone to do it.
For the drain line, can there be much elevation from the interior unit as the line travels horizontally toward the outside wall?
2nd floor in a shop/garage utilizing load bearing trusses. the interior wall height is about 6'6" at it's lowest -- Gable roof with the gable end framing (no center) so the interior room ends up basically a Gambrel shape.
Interior wall is about 10' in toward the center (and storage space between interior and exterior wall). My mount point for the interior part would have to be about 6' (measured from the top) to leave 6" for ventilation at the top of the unit. I'd like to run the drain line back up to about 6'6" to go over a doorway. Seeing as most of those units are 8-9" (wild guess) tall with the connections at the lower side/bottom, that would end up with a rise of a little more than a foot. Is this possible or do these things completely work off a gravity only drain and I'll need to make my drain line head toward the outer wall first before turning 90deg and exiting out the end wall where the external part of the unit is?

What types of hook are you guys using and approximately what weight are they rated for? It’s a finished ceiling. I was thinking something like a punching bag anchor and just going up into the attic and supporting the roof trusses a little better.

Cut holes and mount sections of a louvered bifold door for ventilators on each side of cupola. And then we marked it out with flour. Always nail your top plate to your siding first then line up your seam perfectly next and then nail it, then continue nailing the rest of the panel.

Make sure that a seam doesn't fall on a middle framing board. Before painting, we filled spaces on the exterior with acrylic caulk. They are not terribly weather-proof and tend to rot. Once all pieces are trim we could lay them out together so that they form a 10' wide gambrel truss.

You have to toenail the bottom of the cripples to header. Put the first wall where you want it to be. When a roof, including roof of an attached carport, intersects exterior wall of a home, ends of the rafters are supported by a ledger board attached to the wall of building.

Upper end paneling is installed on both ends of our gambrel shed. The triangulated web design of the shorter members gives trusses their strength. This step by step DIY project is about generator shed plans. Add hooks or screws to suspend garden tools. I have a fairly large shed with a gambrel style truss roof. 4 truss and 3 gusset plates. It’s about 20ft long with 2 by 4’s spaced 25 inches apart. Half of it is used for storage, like an attic, other half completely open. My question is, if I remove most of the 2x6 girders supporting the storage space, leaving only a couple feet for storage at the end, does that lateral support compromise very much structural integrity? Ideally, I would like to add insulation and finish with drywall/plywood to the roof so it’s completely open. Should I keep a couple lateral supports or will it be fine with an added ceiling, plus occasional snow?

2020.10.24 18:31 zerker6 4x4 or 6x6 skid foundation for 12x16 gambrel style

So I'm in the final stretch of finishing my gravel base for my skids for the shed. I'm contemplating to do either 4, 4x4s or 3, 6x6s for my foundation on top of 3/4 gravel. I live in a heavy winter area but looking only to store the normal stuff tools, house shit, extra whatever maybe a snowmobile if I ever get one that has reverse. we are having a baby in April and the 800sf cabin will not accommodate all that we have plus a newbie. The 4x4s even with 4 of them is 2-300 dollars cheaper but am I losing stability if I do that or should I go with the 6x6? 4's are like 70ish per I believe the 6's are 150 a pop all at 16' .
Also deciding to do either 2x4 trusses or 2x6. If I do 2x4 I will go for 16"oc spacing. The plans I have call for 2x6 at 24"oc spacing. Since its gambrel style I'm not super worries about snow load since the top section is a much smaller footprint than the entire roof due to the gambrel style and the pitch on the second angle being so steep. Any insights will be appreciated.
