- Common Ground Books: Contemporary Queer Poetry Book Club: Time is a Mother. Vivid, brave and propulsive, Vuong's poems contend with personal loss, the meaning of family, and the value of joy in a perennially fractured American spirit. The author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award, the 2017 T. S. Eliot Prize and a 2019 MacArthur fellow, Vuong writes directly to our humanity without losing sight of the current moment. Bold and prescient, and a testament to tenderness in the face of violence, Time is a Mother is a return and a forging-forth all at once.β 6pm

2024.05.16 16:05 Longjumping-Dream-13 I broke my boycott streak at Starbucks to get a Dragon Fruit drink and they screwed my order and were rude asf about it.
If you're looking for a sign this is it. No starbucks no mcdonalds no subway no dominoes since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza.
At my new job there are two coffee shops a local one across campus and starbucks right next to my office. I was running late and the line for local was so long since its in a busier area and as much as i knew better I went to starbucks.
not only did they make my drink wrong but when i argued them down to correct it they had such a bad attitude they fucked it up. my dragon drink is the color of a pink drink. This was definitely a sign to stick to my gins and stop supporting them.
Even more eyeopening when you realize im in america and my biggest greif of the morning is a sour experience at the coffee shop when people in Palestine didnt even make it to the morning.
Posting here cuz i feel guilty and shitty. but I definitely learned my lesson. even if it was just "a measy $5"

2024.05.16 16:04 Educational-System85 Tournament Review: Dubai Police Masters 2024
| Dubai Police Global Chess Challenge was a new event started and hosted by Dubai Police from 4th to 12th May. I have played multiple times in United Arab Emirates including the Sharjah Masters and Abu Dhabi Masters. This was my 5th time playing in UAE. Organization The Master Event is very nicely organized in the Dubai Police Officers Club. Organizers have arranged transport from official hotels to the tournament venue. They were very welcoming and gave a lot of respect to players. UAE has a great history of organizing big chess events including the Dubai Open, Sharjah Masters, Abu Dhabi Open, etc. This tournament will be a new addition and hopefully, they will organize this every year. Organizers provided Black Tea, Desi Tea (Karak Tea), Coffee, and a selection of different cakes and croissants. All the boards are Digital Chess Board and the tournament games are published on Lichess broadcast and on other websites. The other two events, Open and Youth, were organized at Dubai Chess Club. Itβs a different venue. I will talk specifically about the Masters event. Accommodation https://preview.redd.it/gve7kalzos0d1.jpg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4f6871fe48fc2d36eeecbc93ebf30f7c80d7895 Organizers provided a list of hotels. Players are allowed to book it from anywhere or they can even choose different hotels. (Staying in the official hotel was not compulsory) I stayed at the Kingsgate Al Jaddaf Hotel which is one of the hotels mentioned by the Organizers in the list. I paid 28500 INR ($350) for 9 Nights for a single room without breakfast. I booked it from an Indian booking website. Team Dubai Police provided pick up and drop up from the hotel. Overall, the hotel stay was very good and the price was also very moderate. For the hotel and overall stay experience, I would rate 9.5/10. Schedule From 4th to 12th May Daily single round. Everyday round starts at 5 PM except the last day at 10 AM. The event consisted of a total of 9 rounds. Playing Field The Masterβs category is open for above 2300 players. The total number of players was 135 and 124 players were 2300+ Three 2700 players participated including Yu Yangyi, Tabatabaei Amin, and Artemiev Vladislav. 35% of the total participants were Grandmasters and almost all players had some title. Should you play in the Next Edition? As I said above, this was my 5th time playing classical events in UAE country and I would highly recommend it. I always feel very safe while traveling. Food is cheap and hospitality is great. There is not a single thing to complain about the event. Here are some ratings according to me Organization β 10/10 Food β 9/10 (I ordered from nearby restaurants. Mostly Indian food) Accommodation β 9.5/10 Expenses Breakdown When I published my last article about the Rilton Cup, I got 2 messages from players to include a breakdown. (USD figures are approximate) - Stay β 28500 INR / $350
- Flights β 22000 INR / $260
- Visa and Insurance β 8000 INR / $100
- Entry Fee β 4000 INR / $50
- Food β 8000 INR / $100
- Taxi (Home β Airport β Hotel) β 1500 INR / $20
- Other Expenses β 3000 INR / $35
Total β 75000 INR / $915 My Performance I gained 40 rating points and I made best rating performance in my life. I already have 5 IM norms so I don't have to worry about more norms. This is my 1st classical tournament in 2024 and I am happy with the performance. https://preview.redd.it/pwsvg8jxos0d1.png?width=623&format=png&auto=webp&s=44acba5ae727007bb04e0a55353c090d106fb321 Photos Miscellaneous photos of the hotel, food, Dubai, etc. Photo References β (Burj Khalifa, Lunch, Shawramaa, Buttermilk Pack, Dubai Mall, Dubai Downtown, Thai Boba Tea, Coffee) All the following images are taken by Nikhil Dixit https://preview.redd.it/19awon53os0d1.jpg?width=867&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54454cc146e2499afbd435386e16886d346c64a7 https://preview.redd.it/xaxtyp53os0d1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd1190b8dcd09ca9d4e81ffd15bb786d42623722 https://preview.redd.it/vizwoo53os0d1.jpg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74ed17802169faa3d1981c3f12c0981331f12cb1 https://preview.redd.it/tvdr2u53os0d1.jpg?width=867&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7db42ad77e577e26876aeb1fca370d3cad6f455f https://preview.redd.it/lma3du53os0d1.jpg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20da022f731be387e80016766bc0c5846a474795 https://preview.redd.it/2cunxs63os0d1.jpg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ba1f140505e1af8084f51c849f494f9dc66ba7f https://preview.redd.it/liak8u53os0d1.jpg?width=867&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7f8b28e71b4cbb04d18ee5418623df09e180394 https://preview.redd.it/k9bsyh83os0d1.jpg?width=867&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=609e118aff64643bb10204bee1f9fa5faa1180a8 submitted by Educational-System85 to chess [link] [comments] |
2024.05.16 15:50 Rivet_ Sour Shots - Barista Pro
Hello,
I picked up a barista pro (it might not be the best machine compared to some setups but it was a present)
I ordered some speciality coffee and have tried to pour shots with it the past two days.
The coffee is βPathfinderβ from Origin coffee. I figured I might enjoy it. As Iβm preferential to lighter roasts. Anything but dark basically. However no matter what I try each shot is sour and bitter at the same time.
After seeing some videos; Changed my burr to level 4 Temperature turned up. No burnt taste so I think itβs okay. Grind level is at 5. Dosing 18g in and out. Weighed before and after. Aiming for 36g out with water; also weighing with a scale. Currently brew time is around 24 seconds ish? But no matter what Iβm doing. Iβm getting incredibly sour and bitter shots. I also tried this with a supermarket coffee an experienced similar results. I first thought itβs bad supermarket coffee but now I know itβs me.
Can anyone give me an idea of a good starting point. I know itβs a learning curve and I understand that, and Iβm fully aware itβs my abilities and not necessarily the machine or coffee.
Iβm just looking if anyone can point me in a direction worth going towards. Iβm excited to get into this world of coffee but Iβm struggling to actually make drinkable liquid.
Thank you.

2024.05.16 15:47 catsbluepajamas Inexplicably started baking and decorating cakes since my dog passed away.
I have never baked before, I do not like cake or sweets. I loved my dog. I adopted him when he was 6 years old and had him for almost 10 wonderful years. Through COVID, alone in our small apartment it was just him and I and he became my shadow. He truly was my best friend. He passed 2 weeks ago from stomach cancer. It was very sudden.
When he passed, on the car ride home from the vet covered in his fur, stool and my own snot and tears I had my boyfriend go into the store and pick up some cake mix and a cake pan and frosting. I canβt track exactly why my brain went where it did, but it had something to do with me not wanting to remember that day as the day scooby passed away/ it was going to be the day I made my first cake.
So I went home and made the worst looking cake in the world. The next day I went to work and everyone ate my cake. (It didnβt look pretty but apparently it tasted very good). I went home that day after work and purchased more cake and more frosting and extra milk and cream and butter and I went to work on a second cake, and then a third. And now I guess I just make cakes as a hobby.
I should also note I work at a middle school/high school. Most of my cakes have been eaten by the kids. I made a cake for one of the kids birthdays and I made a cake for one of my coworkers mothers for Motherβs Day. My piping skills and decorating in general, as well as flavors of the cakes have improved greatly in just 2 weeks. Summer break is almost upon us, so I wonβt have anyone to give cake too for a while.
A new hobby grew out of my sadness. As time passes I actually miss him more and get a little more sad every day. But at least thereβs cake.

now, as being a barista for 2 1/2 years, i know we need to stir the shots into the syrup/sugar, properly shake drinks (like pink drinks) so they mix and dont separate, and all and what not. however, if you were put in the situation where someone ordered a caramel macchiato or some drink where there is a little bit of separation (i.e. iced coffee topped with some cream) , you hand out the drink to them, and then they hand it back asking if you can stir it for them, would any of you just get a little irked by the fact that the custie can stir the drink up themselves or be okay with breaking your wrist trying to stir it up or completely remake the drink? i have plenty of customers who ask for a stir stick or a straw and have the ability to mix in their shots from their macchiato or whatever milk, and i usually try to swirl around any drinks before handing them out. i know itβs not a big deal to stir up drinks, but i also donβt think itβs a big deal or that the customers are incapable of mixing in their macchiato themselves.

2024.05.16 15:25 Livid-Ad-9402 2024 tomato review/preliminary thoughts, Houston, TX
Hello,
The tomatoes are in full force for me here in Houston. I am growing 27 varieties this year, a mix of hybrids and heirlooms, mostly new to me. I wanted to share some preliminary thoughts. I didn't start them all at the same time so I haven't gotten to taste them all yet.
I am pruning my larger slicing tomatoes to a single leader.
So far I have tried, Margold - grown before, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye - Grown Before, Black Krim - Grown Before, Supersweet 100 - grown before, Cherry Brandywine - grown before, and I think the rest are new to me. Riesentraube, Burmese Sour, Purple Boy, Margaret Curtain, Brown Sugar, Prudens Purple, Pink Boar, Sunset Torch, Red Torch, Blue Cream Berry, Edox, Black Cherry
For the ones I have grown before Margold is producing very well. These plants make all sizes of tomato, some softball size and some more like a tennis ball, they are yellow with a beautiful red blush and are juicy while also being dense and meaty, low acid, floral/fruity, and absolutely delicious. I will always grow this tomato.
Pink Berkeley Tie dye is another favorite, to me it has the flavor of a brown/purple tomato while also having the acid I like in a tomato so it is a nice mix. My two plants have also been very prolific and one also died suddenly! Ha. This is my first year experimenting with growing some tomatoes directly in the ground and I guess it is more perilous! The rest of my tomatoes are in raised beds.
Black Krim - obviously great, we know it and love it, my plant got bacterial stem rot and is somehow still growing and producing/setting fruit. I know I should remove the plant but I haven't.
So now for Margaret Curtain, Carbon, and Purple Boy. To me these and Black Krim all taste more or less the same. I've only had one or two from each plant but don't notice any big difference and think growing one of these would probably be fine.
The Margaret curtain has set the most fruit and a lot of very big tomatoes, but like the margold, some are softball size, some tennis ball size, but I am very impressed with the level of production.
Carbon, poor production, good fruit set on first cluster and then pretty much done.
Purple Boy, absymal. This is a Hybrid and I am shocked by its poor performance. Even as a seedling it was a thin, wimpy, wispy and slow growing pathetic specimen that I wasn't sure would live. Not comparable at all to other hybrids. When the plant was about 3 1/2 feet tall I did accidentally break off the central leader and that slowed the growth but even at that point it had only set one fruit. It has since rebounded in growth with several flower clusters but it has yet to set another fruit. The tomato tasted good and like the other dark ones mentioned but absolutely piss poor vigor and fruit set.
Brown Sugar - nice fruit set and clusters of medium size tomatoes, they are mostly between the size of a clementine and a tennis ball. I have only tasted one, and maybe I didn't let it ripen enough but it was nothing special, not particularly sweet or flavorful.
Burmese Sour - I chose to grow these, perhaps incorrectly, thinking that my hot and humid climate would be similar to that of Burma. But who knows. This plant was the first to look diseased with black spots on the foliage, it is not particularly vigorous and stopped growing taller around the 3 1/2 foot mark. But! It has set a lot of fruit so it is kind of winning me over. Apparently these tomatoes are meant to be used in curries where you wouldn't want a sweet tomato. I tasted one raw and I liked it. It was very bright and refreshing, like a nice tomato taste with the acidity turned up. These are also very pretty with that classic heirloom shape like costoluto genovese.
Pink Boar - maybe I am missing something here but its just like a smaller version of pink berkeley tie dye. Probably won't grow again.
Prudens Purple - This is the standout new tomato so far. Good production/fruit set of very large fruits. I had a miserable experience with Pink Brandywine last year and I think this is probably the answer to that. When I first tasted it I was just like, this is what I want a tomato to taste like. This is the tomato you want to put on a burger. Meaty, juicy, not much gel, good acid and I guess this is what people mean when they say "old fashioned" tomato flavor. I will grow this again and probably every year unless something tops it.
Now for the cherries
Riesentraube - extremely slow/late to produce and not prolific at all. I've so far harvested two tomatoes and they taste pretty good but not worth the pathetic performance unless it really gets going later in the season.
Blue Cream Berry - Not for me at all. No acid, just sweet, no tomato flavor. These reminded me of the green doctors tomatoes I grew last year and did not like either. I am learning that I really need acid in a tomato and dont like them to be so sweet. I'm not growing sungolds this year for that reason (too sweet, they do have some acid). Last year my savory dishes were borderline too sweet/more desert like because of the sweetness of the sungolds and the green doctors. Blue cream berry is in that same category like sweet and bland and not tomatoey. Also a slow grower, slow producer, generally unhealthy seeming plant, it must know that i don't like it!.
Sunset Torch/Red Torch - these are hybrids, first time growing. These are quite large for a small cluster tomato, they are kind of like romas but half the size. They are very pretty and the sunset torch taste really good. They have kind of a mild flavor but it is a tomato flavor and they remind me of the margold kind of, like floral and fruity. I guess that is the yellow tomato taste. The red torch I think I haven't had one ripe enough yet but their taste hasn't wowed me yet. Both of these plants are have great vigor, they are like 3X the size of my riesentraube and blue cream berry. They have great fruit set and will grow again just because of how prolific they are.
Edox - hybrid. Good fruit set, vigor and production. Blah taste. These are red cherries and they have to be really really really dark red and ripe to have much flavor at all and when they do its like the expensive cherries on the vine in the grocery store. Probably won't grow again, just meh.
Black cherry - slow going and not much fruit set but it seems to be getting a little better now, the fruits I had were really good and tasted like carbon/black krim/margaret curtain etc. Will grow again, maybe two plants if the production doesn't improve.
Supersweet 100 - grown before, this is probably the gold standard to me of a red cherry. Prolific, productive, good tomato flavor, sweet and acidic. Not much else to say. To me it isn't knock your socks off out of this world good but it is definitely worth growing.
Cherry Brandywine - Determinate. These are probably the best tasting cherries I have grown, Similar flavor to the prudens purple. They are prolific and I love that they are determinate and you can harvest a lot all at once. Short plants with great tasting tomatoes and they are early to produce. Last year I grew one and wish I grew more, growing two this year and maybe 3 next year!
I still have a bunch of tomatoes that I haven't gotten to try yet, mostly hybrids. Grand Marshall, Skyway, Brandy Boy, Big Beef, Granadero, can't think of them all. So far the vigor and fruit set are great but we will have to see about the taste!!
Time will tell. If anyone read all this... wow! Happy gardening :)

2024.05.16 14:27 jumpoffthedeepend Central, Lima
My husband and I had been looking forward to eating at central for months now. We made the reservation three months in advance. We have eaten many tasting menus before and always have had exceptional experiences. Central was the most conflicting and regrettable experience yet.
First off, you arrive in a beautiful garden and are promptly greeted by the hostess. They take you through ingredients and give you a hot towel to refresh your hands. The staff was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. They knew my water was getting low and had it refilled before I realized I needed more.
The food, was beautiful. The plating, the utensils, napkins, glasses, everything was gorgeous.
However, the foods taste ranged from okay to downright disgusting.
The meal was heavy on seafood but everything tasted the same, like ocean. There was no flavor other than ocean. The lobster was clear, and undercooked, we couldnβt eat it. The shrimp was hard like a rock. The shrimp was presented in a squash, and had this disgusting ash on top that made it almost inedible. The pork was cooked for 16 hours, and not in a good way. It tasted like burnt bacon bits that a child could have made. The octopus was bland and tasted like nothing. The grouper was covered in something crunchy that looked beautiful but was not at all tasty. I ate around it because I was starving and it was actually edible.
The highlight of the meal was the wine pairings. The wine was exceptional. The sommelier was kind, knowledgeable and did his job very well. The desserts also were pretty good. Very unique texture and pretty good flavor. One was a sour cream with ice on top, that felt really good and refreshing in your mouth. The deconstructed cocoa was unique and palatable. However Iβm not sure if we were just relived to have something somewhat decent after a bunch of bad dishes.
We were not able to eat most of the dishes as they were so bad to the taste. My husband threw up in their bathroom after the third dish because of how disgusting it was. I woke up in the middle of the night nauseous, remembering some of the flavors and textures.
We are severely disappointed and wish we could forget the whole experience altogether. For $1,500 usd we expected something amazing that tasted good. We wanted this to be the highlight of our Peruvian trip. The chefs seem to have forgotten that food should not only be properly sourced and presented in a good way, but should taste good.
Unfortunate all around.
Edit to add:
Husband now is sick from the food. He ate food that I immediately spit out. We have contacted the restaurant for reimbursement and have a doctor on the way for husband.

2024.05.16 14:20 Upstairs_Internal783 Cookies for the Week of 5/13/2024
| Peanut Butter Cookies & Cream: 4.7/5 I love peanut butter and chocolate combinations. The crushed up cookie on top paired with the peanut butter chips was delicious. French Toast: 5/5 This is a no-brainer. Absolutely amazing! Itβs not really a cookie, more of a cake, but it works perfectly. It was extremely moist and tasted just like French toast. I am also a sucker for the buttercream frosting. (Lowkey would be okay just eating it straight lol). Wedding Cake: 1.6/5 This one did not do it for me. It just tastes like a sugar cookie with an excessive amount of frosting. I also do not think I have ever had wedding cake that has cream cheese frosting, but hey whatever works I guess. Pistachio Gelato ft. Muddy Bites: 2/5 I love pistachios, let me say that right off the bat, and I did not taste pistachio at all. The chilled βgelatoβ had an amazing consistency but had no taste. The base had the perfect texture and was really the only thing going for this cookie. submitted by Upstairs_Internal783 to CrumblCookies [link] [comments] |
2024.05.16 14:16 Substantial_Edge_358 Coffee scene in Sz?
Hello everybody, Iβm moving to Shenzhen and interested in the coffee scene - more the local independent roasters- do they exist?
Contemplating doing a roastery as had one in New Zealand but not sure how the economics will look.
Is coffee even popular, like without the syrups and cream etc. More espresso style.
Many thanks

2024.05.16 14:08 Extension_Band_8138 Your hunger, cravings & satiety anecdotes wanted!
This is a highly exploratory post inspired by some books I delved into recently as well as exfatloss' recent post about satiety (why would salsa and sour cream be such appetite enhancers? What is it about them??).
I guess we sometimes need to engage in knowledge 'fishing expeditions' and just hope some patterns emerge. This is a sub with a lot of first hand experience various food / macro restrictions who pays attention to what they eat and how they feel about it more than the general population.
Please share your accounts of various cravings / satiety experiences while on different restricted diets. It can be something you experience now or have experienced in the past. It can be something you have noticed in your pets or farm animals (we're not that different from them after all!). It can be transient, or something you experience your whole life. I would like to collect these hunge satiety narratives.
Give as much background as you can remember - what was your diet (approx macros, types of food). How long did craving / satiety last? Did you give into it? Does it drive you to overeat / undereat? Did it feel like the mental 'want' was disconected from physical intake (ie. My stomach is distended from overeating, but still crave some more)? How long does the drive to eat / avoid food lasts? What was your energy / mood levels at the time? Do you have any medical conditions that may influence it? Were you taking any drugs or supplements at the time? What is your hunch on why the craving / satiety happened? What are the most delicious things you've ever tasted? If you had them repeatedly, would they lose appeal? What foods feel satisfying? What foods make you not able to take another bite?
To have any chance at patterns emerging, I'd prefer us to stick to natural products driving cravings / satiety or minimally processed foods. For processed food, please indicate the ingredients on it, including any fortification that may apply in your country. The more complex the ingredient list, the harder it will be!
We know so little of how hunger, satiety and cravings work, and yet it is so important. This interplay of 'feelings' ensures an animal (incl we) can meet its energy needs and (more impressively!) get a huge array of chemicals needed to buid and maintain its body structures and keep going a huge number of chemical processes going.
Given access to a variety of (natural) food - hunger, satiety and cravings manage to get this 'procurement' system going to astonishing precision. How?
What things can a body trigger cravings for? Is it just minerals? Macros? Amino acids? Types of fat? When does satiety kick in? Is it driven by energy needs being met? Micro nutrient needs being met? A combination of both? Which macro and which micro nutrient combos? Do other food compounds (e.g. flavonoids, protease inhibitors, anti nutrients) make a difference? Do mildly toxic plant compounds (tannins? Protease inhibitors?) trigger satiety? Can certain macros not be processed corectly into energy without given micro nutrients? Does the body know & try to correct that? How does the body know it has a need for something? How does it turn that need into a sensation of hunger / satiety? How does it know / learn what external food product can meet that need?

2024.05.16 12:02 sorenscreams Help me find a drink
Hello. I am new to liking coffee (past 2 years) so I don't know what words to use to ask for things.
I drink things really sweet, and if I'm making coffee at home it's like 1/3 creamer.
Now at another chain coffee shop with a mermaid on the cup, my go to order is a hot mocha with peppermint and made with sweet cream.
What words do I need to say to get something similar at Dutch Bros?
