  • Over 70% of Canadian institutions do not keep track of student deaths or attempted suicides.
  • Since the pandemic, mental health and suicide are becoming concerns on campuses for postsecondary education.
  • Universities place a high focus on mental health, with many highlighting the rise in counselling.
Over 70% of Canadian institutions do not keep track of student deaths or attempted suicides, according to a CBC News exclusive investigation. It is challenging to gauge the scope of the problem due to this lack of information.
The research sought data for the previous five years from 52 of the biggest universities in the nation to determine whether they keep track of suicide deaths as well as suicide attempts. Of the 24 schools that did not track, only six gave CBC the actual numbers. Five other schools responded to the request but did not address the tracking question. Five more schools stated they track medical incidents but not always suicide.

Student suicides

Since precise data helps academics develop “novel innovative tools” for suicide prevention and gives schools a greater understanding of the efficacy of their mental health programs, experts argue that knowledge truly is power. Since the pandemic, mental health and suicide are becoming concerns on campuses for postsecondary education.
According to a September 2022 assessment released by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, three-quarters of students had negative effects from the epidemic for three years in a row. Additionally, pupils from marginalized backgrounds and younger children are more vulnerable.
Universities place a high focus on mental health, with many highlighting the rise in counseling and other services over the past few years. However, some schools have difficulties gathering accurate statistics because, for example, the majority of their students commute, or their student bodies are too small. Due to privacy issues, 18 out of the 52 schools said they were unable to track or disclose data on student suicides.
The difficulties of getting institutional recognition for student suicides were faced by institutional of Waterloo student Andrea Howell. Her family was willing to grieve, but the institution didn’t want to talk about what had happened.
In order to better inform choices about public health, Howell encouraged the Ontario Office of the Chief Coroner to include a “student” category for suicides. Four years after it was made, the modification became enforceable in 2023. Coroners in British Columbia and Quebec do not keep a systematic record of suicides by post-secondary students. Howell expects that the data will inspire more decisions on public health in the future.

2024.05.16 17:41 jp_1896 Wondering if what I'm experiencing is normal within this community

Hey guys! Long time lurker, first time poster (I think... maybe i posted something some years ago, I don't know).
I've been struggling with some complicated mental health stuff, and I'm wondering if what I'm feeling is "normal" and looking for others with similar experiences.
First, some background info: I (28M) am a gay cis man that has had a lot of his life shaped by heterosexual influences. I haven't formed any profound LGBT friendships throughout most of my life, I also haven't had an actual healthy relationship until last year, and I am very straight-passing (or at least I used to be).
Fast-forward to last year, I met an incredible guy and we've been dating for little over a year now. And let me tell you, this man has done absolute wonders for my mental health, for my self-image and for my general personal growth. But he has a very different life history and background than I do. Since he isn't as straight-passing as I am, he struggled a lot more with homophobia than I did, and he hasn't had a lot of straight friends, instead finding love and acceptance in the LGBT community. So as we get to know each other, he has introduced me to a lot of staples of LGBT life that were so far kinda missing from my experience.
The problem is, the more I delve into it, the more I challenge the cornerstones of my personality and I've been finding more and more that I don't really know who I am anymore.
For example, I had never watched RuPaul's Drag Race, something some would argue is a seminal experience in a gay man's life, until he introduced me to it last year. Since then I have watched 12 seasons (and still going) and am absolutely fascinated with the show and drag in general to an extent I've only ever been fascinated by with gaming and souls-likes, which he claims is a very "straight-people hobby".
And this is where things get messy for me. I see all these fun gay men on TV, and met so many LGBT people through my BF... and I just don't feel like I measure up to them, personality-wise. Meanwhile, when I set at the table with straight people I feel like I can shoot up the ocasional "gurl" and some of them act like I'm the most interesting person they've ever seen. But this also doesn't really feel like me, it feels like I'm imitating these big personalities I've met recently. When I speak it doesn't sound like me, I can almost hear my BF or one of his friends or one of the funnier drag queens I've seen talking through me.
I feel kinda empty. Like I'm not really a person, but a caricature of one I've built to suit whichever social circle I was trying to fit into, and now I don't really know who I am. It doesn't help that I have very isolationist tendencies, and I have made a fantastic job of creating some really high walls and reservations as a defense mechanism, but now I don't really know how to let people in, and I don't even know if there is anything in here.
I just really feel empty and void. I don't have a personality, I don't have anything interesting going on, all my problems feel very small, all my struggles feel invalid, my life feels bland and I have no uniqueness to speak of. I'm a nothing salad, I just learned to add a bit of seasoning when trying to impress someone else.
this kinda turned into a weird rant. I don't really know where i'm going with this anymore...
I think i might be done with everything.

2024.05.16 17:40 DieterDrydigger CLOV and Understanding Upcoming SaaS Potential v2

Here was my first post looking at the potential from a 30K foot level: https://www.reddit.com/CLOV/comments/1ct66bf/shooting_from_the_hip_here_on_clov_saas_potential/
So as I mentioned in my last post, my brain was racing last night as I really began analyzing what Toy said in his LI post yesterday. I started looking at what the potential could really look like if Clover Health became a hybrid Insurance/Healthcare + Software/Technology company and was able to monetize the tech side of it more effectively.
Valuations are significantly more robust in tech for good reason- they're predictable with much lower revenue and pricing volatility.
Brief history of software licensing- SaaS stands for Software as a Service and has revolutionized the way software has been managed since the early to mid 2000s. Prior to ~2004ish, for consumers you had what was called perpetual software licensing that was installed by the buyer and was licensed to use in perpetuity, never again seeing any fees. You also had VERY expensive (mainly for larger corporations) on-premise software, allowing companies much more control and security over their software instances, but with heavy infrastructure costs capital investments (servers, etc).
So what software vendors did was release new updates every year or so, trying to entice users that they needed the new version (think Windows 4.0 and Windows 95, 98, etc, if you really want to throw it back) and kind of similar to iPhones now a days, many people will skip 2-3 generations before buying new.
However, many consumers opted to skip multiple versions in order to save some money, until theirs became so obsolete, they had to. It was much more unpredictable to forecast for wall st. There were also massive amounts of piracy around the world (China specifically) costing many of these companies literally billions in revenue each year that was difficult to prevent or stop. Enter drastically higher Internet speeds and the infrastructure requirements needed for SaaS circa 2003-2005.
I worked for a startup company on the cutting edge of SaaS around 2007 that was acquired by Adobe specifically because we were very good at our SaaS model, and Adobe wanted to figure out how to switch their Creative products over to a SaaS model.
After the acquision, during one of the first few all hands meetings, Adobe's CEO expressed how excited he was to learn from us during their transition of their licensing model and how big of an issue licensing fraud/piracy was and how switching to SaaS would likely fixt that. When we were acquired ~2010, Adobe's stock price was something like $14 a share from what I remember following the acquisition, and hit nearly $700 roughly in 2021, roughly 8 or so years after making the transition off of perpetual licenses. I had thousands of RSUs and it was a fun run, though it's been some time since I've worked there.
The reason why SaaS is great (for a company), is because there are never any updates to buy, companies manage all of that now and push updates on a regular bases, but instead of a one-time purchase, you pay on an ongoing basis for your "seat" every month.
Some of the largest SaaS vendors are companies like Salesforce, Adobe, Autodesk, Oracle, SAP. They way they scale is by number of employees within a company logging in to their CRM or one of their many other services.
For example a small company with say, 200 employees has 25 seats (aka, 25 different people) can log in and they may be paying $100 per seat, per month. However a company with 10K employees and 1000 users may only be paying $25 per seat... these are all arbitrary figures, but show how it scales.
Adobe, on the other hand may have a single product for $50 a month, or their entire creative bundle for $100 per person. College or HS students may get it for much cheaper like $25 a month.
You also have up front implementation fees that can be in the tens of thousands or even millions of dollars depending on the size of the org.
Anyway, I've gotten much deeper into the details than I anticipated when I sat down and started typing, but I've been trying to figure out how Clover's model would work, i.e., who are they selling to?
Ultimately, it's the insurance providers that are looking to reduce their MCR rates, so they have to play a role in all of this, but you also have a ton of doctors that are on the front lines needed to make all the data work.
I'm sure Andrew knows exactly how they want to go to market, but if I had to guess, they would sell some sort of access license to the large insurers (United, Humana, etc) and then there would be a second component pricing out these "seats" or "lives under management" is probably how it would translate in the healthcare field, to the doctors. Doctors that are then rewarded with some sort of kickback if the insurers see they're using is properly, costs are decreasing or something like that.
This is where it get's a little fuzzy for me and I'd love to hear Toy's next update on how they plan to go to market.
In terms of TAM, I read that there are somewhere in the range of 30-35M Medicate Advantage potential candidates currently in the US. UnitedHealthcare, alone, accounts for 29% of all Medicare Advantage enrollment in 2023, or 8.9 million enrollees. Together, UnitedHealthcare and Humana account for nearly half (47%) of all Medicare Advantage enrollees nationwide. By comparison, CLOV has just shy of 80K enrollees mainly in NJ, some in GA and fewer in SC, TX and Philly area of PA. That's it.
So if, CLOV could tap into these markets that United and Humana (and Cigna and Centene etc) are already established, show them the proven savings benefits Clover Assistant can provide, it could get real interesting, as long as they don't fumble the GTM.
Now people are asking, well, why doesn't a United, with close to $400B in Rev per year just buy a tiny little company like Clover Health (~$500M market cap)... well, it's because I don't believe they can, because Vivek has 120M Class B shares with 10x voting power, meaning he has 1.2B votes vs. the remaining float which is roughly 375M Class A, w/ 1 vote each, if Im not mistaken. Meaning, only if Vivek wants to sell, will they ever sell. A hostile takeover cannot happen under his watch.
And if United and Humana and all the large players are struggling to keep costs under control, where they're talking about shrinking their footprints, but CLOV has an industry-leading MCR in the mid-70s. They will have to either build it themselves, acquire another company with a similar tech or will have to pay to get access to it, implement it all while CLOV will be a huge beneficiary.
This could get very interesting... I'll start working on a v3 follow up and dig into some potential numbers...

2024.05.16 17:33 Birthday_Truck MFD Rework and New Displays: Fixes and Features for Co-Pilot Seats

Right now - either because of bugs or unfinished features - there's no substantial feature set or content for Co-Pilot Seats.

Between 3.17 and 3.22, the Cutlass Black co-pilot seat's missile operator mode worked on and off. I remember the functionality working but the UI failing. Although still not fully fleshed out, yet, missiles are still a fun-enough role to give to a Co-Pilot friend or guest.
In 3.23, the Cutlass Black Co-Pilot can't enter Missile Operator Mode at all.
The other Co-Pilot feature that offered a semblance of contributory value was the power distribution MFD; the pilot could remain HOTAS or HOSAS and call for power, shield, or engines from Co-Pilots. Between 3.17 and 3.22, the Cutlass Black co-pilot seat's power MFD never worked with mouse interaction but could be manipulated via the F5-F8 keys.
In 3.23, the Cutlass Black Co-Pilot cannot seem to manipulate the power MFD screen nor through F5-F8 keys.
I trust these items will be fixed or replaced with better systems - probably SQ42 missiles and manufacturer HUD and UI systems...

But the current Co-Pilot feature set offers insufficient fun. Here is what Co-Pilot seats ought to manage:

  1. The remote control tractor beams - which just need to be fixed in a few ships;
  2. The Power Triangle - which helps the pilot remain HOTAS/HOSAS;
  3. Countermeasures - which helps the pilot keep their eyes out front;
  4. ATC and Quantum navigation - which helps the pilot focus on parking, evasion, and escape, when necessary;
  5. Scanning modes (camera is currently fixed forward) - which helps the pilot focus on navigating terrain, asteroid fields, or debris fields;
  6. Backup flight controls - which helps the pilot if/when they're incapacitated, crashed to desktop, cleaning up cat puke, etc;
  7. Missile Operator Mode - which helps the pilot focus on acquiring gun solutions for themselves or...;
  8. Pilot delegated gimballed weaponry - which helps the pilot acquire gun solutions in larger or slower multi-crew ships.
I produced a video documenting what's broken and what's missing to complement an issue council report. The video includes examples of how co-pilot functions work in other spaceship media.
[Issue Council Submission] https://issue-council.robertsspaceindustries.com/projects/STAR-CITIZEN/issues/STARC-113292
[Issue Council Evidence Video Submission] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwLyvcMETws
My hope is that, at minimum, missile operator mode and power distribution management functions are fixed in time for the free-flight.
The bigger hope, though, is that the examples present in my issue council video are already in-progress at CIG. If so, it's time for some thought leadership on Co-Pilot seats.

2024.05.16 17:17 Emotional-Coconut-77 AITA for suggesting someone in our school club isn’t doing their job well?

I, (29F), am in college finishing my bachelor’s degree. Took time off school, figured out what I wanted to do with my life, got into my dream school, and I’m very happy. I met some people within my department my first year (last year) who I became friends with, (fake names) Alice (24Nonbinary, I chose to replace their name with something similar to their real name, think Jen and Jane) and Erin (40F). I joined a club they were already part of that has to do with our shared degree. It was fantastic and we all got along and were happy.
This past semester, we were all executives in the club and starting a new big project for the following year. Tina (23F) was one of the executives. I really like her, she was the first person I met when I got to this school last year and I immediately liked her.
Yet, this last semester she wasn’t doing much in her role as marketing director for our club. We hadn’t done much yet for her to promote this past semester since we were mostly getting things ready for the big project in the fall (we’re media production people). So, I understand Tina didn’t have much to “promote” but we were desperate for writers and other people to join our club and she never came up with ideas or campaigns for anything during the semester. Tina was working more reactively (if our president Erin said we needed an IG post or a poster made, she would get it done and do it well). She also never came to exec meetings and never responded in our Slack chats about the club, it was like Tina wasn’t even in the club anymore.
I brought all these concerns up to the rest of the exec team at our last exec meeting. No one agreed with me and I was a little surprised. I tried to explain why I thought this, but everyone brushed it off.
This happened a couple months ago, but yesterday Alice reached out and told me I had been racially biased with my critiques. (Tina is a black woman), since Kaleb also didn’t go to every meeting therefore I was critiquing a black woman and not a “white passing man” Kaleb is N.A. I tried explaining that, while Kaleb missing meetings did upset me, he did his job and did it well, so I couldn’t complain bc we’re busy college students.
Also, Alice didn’t like that I said Tina used Canva to create our posts. I love Canva, but I also know it’s easier to use, which just sent my brain on that tangent and I didn’t mean for it to come off as a critique of her using Canva, more like “yea the posts are done quickly bc she’s using Canva” since her doing quick work was cited as a reason everyone dismissed my concern. But as I said, she did reactive (made posts after being asked) work vs proactive (taking initiative to create things on her own or come up with ideas). I will answer any questions to clarify.
I’m wondering if I’m the asshole for critiquing Tina the way I did? Am I the asshole?

2024.05.16 16:58 samy_1980 Understanding Student Expenses While Studying in Germany

Monthly Expenses
1. Rent
Rent is typically the largest monthly expense for students in Germany. The cost varies significantly depending on the city and type of accommodation. For instance:
2. Health Insurance
Health insurance is mandatory for all students. The average monthly cost is around €125, depending on your provider and age. For example:
3. Groceries
Monthly grocery expenses typically range from €100 to €125. You can save by shopping at budget supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi, Rewe, Edeka, or Penny. Additionally, using apps like Too Good To Go can help you find discounted products.
4. Transportation
Most universities provide a semester ticket that covers public transportation in the nearby region. If your university doesn’t offer this, you can purchase a Deutschland Ticket for €49 per month, which allows travel across Germany. Students often get this ticket at a reduced rate of around €8.
5. Internet
Internet costs depend on your provider and plan. Mobile internet plans from providers like WinSim, Sim.de, O2, or Vodafone range from €10 to €20 per month. Sometimes, you might find deals offering 27 GB for just €10.
6. Dining Out and Takeaways
Eating out can vary greatly depending on frequency and location. To save money, it's advisable to cook at home and limit dining out.
7. Miscellaneous Expenses
Miscellaneous expenses, including shopping for necessities like stationery, clothing, and toiletries, usually range from €50 to €75 per month. Haircuts can cost between €15 and €30 for men and up to €25 to €30 for women.
8. Gym and Sports
Gym memberships typically cost between €25 and €40 per month, depending on the facilities and services provided.
Summary of Monthly Expenses:
Total: €800 to €815 per month
Quarterly Expenses
German Radio Tax (Rundfunkbeitrag)
Every household in Germany must pay a fixed radio tax of €8.36 per month, usually billed quarterly. In shared flats, this fee can be divided among the tenants.
Biannual Expenses
Semester Contribution
Every six months, students need to pay a semester contribution to their university, which ranges from €280 to €500. (Depends on your specific uni)
One-Time Expenses
Security Deposit (Kaution)
When renting a place, you must pay a security deposit, typically equivalent to three months' cold rent. This amount is refundable when you move out, provided there’s no damage to the property.

2024.05.16 16:52 No_Direction4777 The Hermes Drama and Beyond - Perspective from a Greek Player

Good morning my witches and wizards.
I'd like to inject some very niche nuance into the discussion surrounding Supergiant's presentation of the Greek Gods in Hades 1 and 2. This will post will be a little long, but I believe context will be helpful when explaining my argument. If you need to get back to kicking [REDACTED]'s ass ASAP, there's a TLDR at the bottom.
I will preface this by saying Hades 2 may be my favorite game of all time, beating out the first by a wide margin (despite me logging over a hundred hours in the original). I've followed Supergiant since the original release of Bastion, played each of their games extensively, and I think I have a passable understanding of the studio's vision. As a result, I view their design choices in good faith.
That being said, I have a few very minor concerns. While they are nowhere near enough to sour the experience for me, I would like to express the thoughts that have been banging around in my head. Spoilers below.
Table of Contents
  1. Why do you care?
  2. What's your problem?
  3. What does your smelly uncle have to do with this?
  4. Giving props for the small details.

1 - Why do you care?

For context, I am a Greek man who was the first generation born and raised in the United States. Greek was my first language, I was raised by a Greek community, and I've been heavily involved in our customs since birth. While many people think ancient culture is completely disconnected from modern Greek beliefs, this is inaccurate. No, I don't pray to a shrine of Poseidon when I go fishing. However, many of the stories, beliefs, and morals that were described by the ancient Greek pantheon remained key parts of our culture throughout the transition into modernity.
For example, a common theme in ancient Greek mythology is that of a god secretly traveling on earth, being offered hospitality by unsuspecting mortals, and then rewarding them for their generosity. This is represented in modern culture by the term "philoxenia" which represents our value of being friendly towards strangers. Relationships like these represent the fact that we still value our ancient culture, albeit through modern representation of its ideas. I see many moral, theological, and literary threads that connect the time of the pantheon with the time of modern christianity. As a result, I am passionate about how our ancient culture is represented. In many small ways, it is still a part of me.

2 - Whats your problem?

I started thinking deeply after a recent post on the subreddit (rightfully) condemning racist remarks towards the characterization of Hermes. I think the general consensus of correct - the design of the gods are amazing, and they do a great job representing how many different cultures were involved in worshiping the Pantheon in ancient times. Ancient Greeks traded with others, spread their beliefs far and wide, and often praised the virtues of other cultures (such as Ethiopia) through art and literature. This is represented well by diverse design in-game.
However, despite the fact that the characters in Hades visually represent the variety of people who engaged with the pantheon, I sometimes feel that their traits and voices don't represent Greekness. To put it in other words, the gods are fantastic at giving off the aura of Greek mythology, but less so at giving off the aura of Greek culture.

3 - What does you smelly uncle have to do with this?

My primary complaint is Supergiant's approach when choosing character voices. To preface - THE VOICE ACTING IS AMAZING! There's not a single character whose voice doesn't fit their design and personality. I'm still amazed that Darren Korb managed to nail both Skelly and Zag. However, what interferes with my immersion the most is the choice not to use Greek accents at all.
Hephaestus in the sequel looks exactly like my immigrant uncle in real life. However, every time he speaks, I'm left wondering why he sounds Scottish. Judy Alice Lee did an amazing job voicing Melinoe, but when she speaks Greek (ie. Kataskion Aski) during her incantations, it sounds more like a British classics student practicing her Greek lines. Greek-speakers are a vast minority of the player base, and I get that this is something only someone in my position can notice and complain about. However, it feels like voices were chosen based on what Americans think sounds "regal and godly" as opposed to what characters would sound like in the context of the culture.
I don't think this was done intentionally, and there are definitely limitations when casting voices that don't come in common accents. However, I do think it is a missed opportunity to create a work of art that represents our culture far more deeply than other media has in the past.
Another small example is the use of Roman numerals when marking the doors in Tartatus and Chronos' clock attacks. In the context of the story, these symbols are being used a few centuries too early. Why not use Greek letters as the numerical system, counting down doors through ε, δ, γ, β ,α until the end? It may be confusing on the first run, but people learn quickly - they may even walk away understanding more about the Greek alphabet. I'm sure the creative minds at Supergiant could come up with other ways to represent "time" in a way that fits the cultural context.

4 - Props for the small details

I'd like to give props to some of the amazing tiny details that did make me feel represented in-game.
Thank you for reading my rant. I understand that much of what I would have preferred is out of the scope of the team's vision, but I wanted to get my thoughts out so I can finally put them to rest. I hope my argument about cultural representation can be separated from the more negative and insensitive discourse about racial traits in character design.
Ν'αστε καλά. Θάνατοσ στο Χρόνοσ.
TLDR: The discourse around Supergiant's presentation of Hades characters has been bipolar - either "It's Perfect" or "It's Horrible". I think it is much closer to perfect than not, but as a Greek myself, I find myself begrudgingly accepting some very minor details (such as dubbing and pronunciation) that could have been executed a tad more thoughtfully. That being said, I think Supergiant did their best considering the resources available to them.

2024.05.16 16:47 Glittering-Buyer-230 Why does God / Allah test us, when he knows everything that is going to happen?

Hey guys! I'm been asking myself this question since last year. I've been thinking about it a lot lately.
My question is:
Doesn't God /Allah know the past, present, and future? Doesn't he already know the future? Doesn't God already know what every person is going to do before he creates them?
When God created Adam and Eve, didn't he already know everything that was going to happen after that? Didn't God / Allah already know what each person's name was going to be? Didn't he already know ahead of time what each and every person would do and say? Didn't he already know where each and every person would end up going before he even created everything?
My ultimate question is, why would God / Allah create everything and test us humans when he already knows what each of us will do and say? Why would God test everyone when he already knows which person is going to hell and which person is going to heaven?
For example, isn't that like a teacher giving a test to a group of his students even though he already knows which of his students will pass and which of his students will fail?
The difference here is that the teacher that tests his or her students does not know which students will pass and which students will fail. That is why the teacher tests them.
However, God / Allah already knows everything that is going to happen to us way before he created the first humans. Because God is all knowing and knows everything that is going to happen to us in the future, ahead of time, even before he creates us.
If God / Allah does want to test us, which he apparently is, then does that mean that God / Allah doesn't know the future. Does that mean that God doesn't know our destiny and where we are going to end up? Even before he creates everything? Does that, therefore, mean that God / Allah is not all knowing? Does that mean he doesn't know everything that is going to happen in the future? Because, after all, if he knew what was going to happen to all of us way before he even created everything, then why would he test us to begin with?
I'm sorry, guys, for my post. It's quite long and repetive, but I've been really wondering about this for a long time, and I would really like some insight on this matter! Am I right about what I said in my post? Or, am I wrong, and I am missing an important point there?

2024.05.16 16:45 Prestigious-Cry-2597 ULaw shitshow continues with delayed finals results

So. 20 minutes before my final results of the second year core modules on the LPC and they send this email. Not even my name, just “student”, telling me they are delaying results of another FIVE DAYS. I called up assessments to get the over the phone, they can’t do it. Called up me course lead to find out what’s going on, and she couldn’t give me straight answer about why they are delayed. I asked if it’s because they’ve not been marked, and if that isn’t the case and it is technical, how they know it’ll be fixed by next week at 2pm. Nothing. Yet another example of how utterly disgraceful this “university” is.. I’ve seen better circuses. I have loved a formal complaint and will take it to the ombudsman if necessary. They have already had to give some in my cohort (those who could be bothered to continue with a complaint) £100 via BACS. I am so disgusted. What’s even funnier is it’s mental health week and they think things like this are going to be helping anyone’s mental wellbeing???

2024.05.16 16:43 anthrthrowaway666 question about frames

im an animation student in the literal beginning of actually creating animation for my degree and portfolio but i wont lie… im kinda shaky with the principles and everything and my first full animation and motion course is next semester so im taking the whole summer to really buckle down and get to work!
in some productions, i’ve noticed the way they count their frames is completely different than what basics ive been taught. like they sometimes circle certain frame numbers but it doesn’t go in order? if that makes sense? i think my explanation is a bit vague but i do have an example to share:
https://youtu.be/vaPNZlI_IbI?si=lA59fPsqMkZwZD5z
i wanted to know the significance of the method and see how i can use it in my studies!

  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor Kerrie Parker has given the pro-Palestine encampment at Deakin University instructions to disassemble.
  • The new car efficiency standards legislation is one of those victories, according to the Climate Council.
  • With the help of this law, Australia will cut down on one of its main sources of climate pollution.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Kerrie Parker has given the pro-Palestine encampment at Deakin University instructions to disassemble. According to organizer Jasmine Duff, if police or security intervened, the students would not follow the order and would instead call an emergency rally.
A brief protest in support of the encampment drew about 200 participants and proceeded without incident under police and campus security watch.

Vehicle efficiency

Based on the university’s commitment to safety and security, Deakin vice-chancellor Iain Martin said that the directive was for students to dismantle the campsite rather than cease protesting.
Martin highlighted that university free expression must be given top priority and that the demonstrators’ inappropriate language and actions violated Deakin’s code of conduct. The university places a high premium on its commitment to security and safety.
Since there hasn’t been much positive climate news lately, climate advocacy groups are seizing victories wherever they can. The upcoming passage of new car efficiency standards legislation is one of those victories, according to the Climate Council.
CEO of the Climate Council Amanda McKenzie stated: In Australia, high-priced, environmentally harmful vehicles have been permanently banned. Whether or not you drive a car, this is a win for the environment, our health, and all Australians.
With the help of this law, Australia will cut down on one of its main sources of climate pollution, leading the transportation sector to cleaner emissions in the future. We anticipate that this significant shift will have a favorable effect on our environment, our health, and our pocketbook.

2024.05.16 16:34 LuxembourgsFinest Leftists have grown dangerously antisemitic and the fact that they deny it and continuously get away with it enrages me.

Correction: American/Western Leftists I don’t know about the others.**
They parade themselves as bastions of justice, tolerance, equality, and love, but never have that same energy when it comes to Jews, and I’ve yet to see any of them call out antisemitism the way they call out other forms of hatred. Instead, they contribute to their own versions of antisemitism.
And on and on…
After all of this, how can I believe they they’re the saviors they claim to be - the so called agents of love and tolerance? How can I believe “we don’t have issues with Jews, just Zionists”?

2024.05.16 16:33 Reasonable-Match1099 Why isn’t KCL higher in home rankings, especially above Birmingham?

i recognise that KCL does poorly in student satisfaction, which home league tables consider, hence its lower ranking compared to international tables.
however, i looked closely at the metrics by which rankings are made for KCL and Birmingham for example. KCL sits at 24th on the Complete Uni Guide, Birmingham at 12th.
KCL does better in entry standards, research quality, research intensity, academic services spending, student-staff ratio and graduate prospect - outcomes.
Birmingham does better than KCL in facilities spending, continuation and graduate prospects - on track.
They both are ranked 111th for student satisfaction.
This seems odd to me. The difference in most of the metrics which Birmingham does better in is also not significant really at all, and yet they are 12 positions higher.
Birmingham does have 3 more subjects ranking top 10 than KCL, but many of these are subjects that KCL doesn’t offer, like tourist studies, creative writing and town planning. I don’t think this exactly has an effect on the overall ranking though especially with just 3.

2024.05.16 16:30 Dazzling_Secretary92 Sub Educational Assistant support

Hello all, I am a sub. EA and I was wondering how everyone deals with the lack of work to do on assignments. Examples of the down time I’m talking about it like, I will go into this class in the am, I’m supposed to support the teacher and welcome students, but I just feel awkward when I walk in and there’s like 2 kids and the teacher, I feel like I’m bothering them just standing there waiting for kids to show up. Another example is if I get assigned to a room for a certain block of time during the day, I have had multiple times where the teacher tells me “ oh we don’t need you” so I’m expected to leave the room and go where?
Also I’ve been told “ we don’t really need you, you’re welcome to just hang out” by teachers on assignments when I’ve first arrive in the morning.
What should I be doing with this downtime? Again I’m a sub I don’t have a classroom to go to unless it’s on my schedule to be in a certain room. Teachers if you have any advice on being a good Aide or things I can do that would help a teacher feel comfortable giving me work it may seem like nice to not be busy but I hate it, it makes me hate working in education even more everyday, and it makes the days take forever if I’m not busy.

2024.05.16 16:28 P_0_VV Camping in Skeleton Park

Part 1

The official story is that I hit my head. According to the lawyer I wasn't lucid enough to be a reliable witness, and honestly, I'm starting to believe that might be the truth. It's certainly easier to accept that everything was all just some nightmare.
But if my mind wasn't playing tricks on me, and those fuck-heads didn’t have anything to do with my friend’s disappearance, then there truly is no explanation for what happened.
My therapist and parents both agree. The best way to preserve my sanity is to chalk it all up to my imagination. But I see understanding in their eyes when I recount the events. They want to believe me, I know it. That alone is enough to fuel my doubt.

School had begun that September with mourning. I only knew the guy who passed away by face and name. It had happened a month after his graduation, and two months before his first year at Cornell.
During the intercom-ordered moment of silence, I looked out through the classroom. Some were bored, some cried. Many shifted in their seats and were glancing around, like myself, counting every second till the awkwardness would end.
It ended sooner than we thought when a kid with sports goggles a size too big bouncing on his face slammed the door open, obliviously clarifying his attendance.
I'm embarrassed to say that this kid, Aiden, was the only friend I had made in high school until this point. I have a hard time introducing myself to others, but being friends with a prepubescent outcast wasn't making that any easier.
After middle school, my family moved to the small village we live in now. It was a brainless choice because my Mom had found better work, my Dad wanted to be closer to his aging parents, and I desperately wanted out of my old school.
Aiden was the first kid to introduce himself when I transferred last year. I realized he was the token 'weird kid' way too late to make it into any social circles. I know it sounds like I'm a shit friend, but that's the way our relationship turned out. Sure, we told our parents and teachers we were friends, but in reality, it was more a tolerance than friendship.
After all, we didn't have anyone else.
For once, I was thankful for Aiden's lack of awareness. It gave me something to focus on instead of the depressing silence strangling the room.
After realizing his mistake, he whispered an apology, sat down, and pulled out an insect encyclopedia from his book bag. What a nerd.
I distracted myself by reading the book from over his shoulder, and before I knew it, lights were turned back on and class began in earnest.

I was able to learn what had happened by eavesdropping on hallway gossip between my classes.
Eight kids, six seniors and two juniors, had found a cave in a region of forest known as Skeleton Park. With that discovery, they decided to add spelunking to their pre-graduation bucket list.
Skeleton Park is the setting of countless local ghost stories, which made it a hot spot for rebellious teen antics. Kids would do everything there: party, drink, smoke, fuck, and everything in between. They even crawled around in caves apparently.
When I first moved, I was a skeptic with no intent of exploring the woods. But one creepy phenomenon always unnerved me. For some reason, animals completely avoided the area.
I initially dismissed this as fiction, like all the other folk tales, until I started walking my dog, Paddy, along the town's bike trail.
The trail runs parallel to the remains of a stone wall outlining Skeleton Park. The first couple of times I walked along it, I didn't notice anything peculiar. But after my Dad first told me about the rumors, I became aware that the area was unnaturally silent. No birds chirped in the trees, no flies buzzing, and no rustling from rodents or any other animals.
Even more surreal, on several occasions I saw deer stop at the wall and walk along it instead of passing through the area. It was like there was an invisible border they refused to cross.
With this context, I'm sure you can understand the reaction of the locals when eight kids entered, and only seven escaped two days later, traumatized and bruised.
Honestly, I was surprised to not have heard about the event over the summer, closer to when it happened. Even more strange though, was how unwilling Aiden was to talk about the incident.
He was the kind of kid who had a strong opinion about everything. On top of that, he was constantly bringing up horror movies, or Creepypastas he had found online. But when I asked his opinion on this summer's events during recess, he only shrugged. Despite the nonchalant response, the look on his face told me that it bothered him. So I didn’t press, and let the subject go.
At the time I'd guessed that he might've had some connection to the kid that went missing. In a way, he did.

After an exhausting day of attempts from teachers to console their students with speeches, candy, and exceptional lenience, I was ready to go home.
I expected to find Aidan at the usual spot by the bike racks, where we met each day to walk home. Instead, there was an audience next to the bikes, forming a ring around two disheveled figures.
The flying fists and shouting could only mean one thing, so I kept my distance. Then I heard Aidan yell center, “Fucker!’ and saw a glimpse of his face spitting from a bloody mouth onto the other fighter.
Even though his back was to me, I could tell Aidan’s opponent was easily 5 inches, and 60 pounds heavier than my friend.
Teachers didn’t arrive to break up the fight before the two were on the ground, Aidan mounted with arms up, desperately trying to block blows.
A whistle was blown, and people began running away as my math teacher desperately tried to pry the football player off of Aidan.
He fought back the grown man and was finally pulled away when two more adults rushed to help. The boy was screaming at Aiden with carnal rage.
"You're a fucking liar! How dare you, I'm going to fucking kill you if I ever see you again!"
Aidan was still screaming too, but backed away willingly.
"I'm telling the truth dumbass! You were trespassing! You should be lucky we didn't press charges!"
Aiden looked bad but waved the teachers off whenever they asked if he was OK. Blood poured from his forehead, mouth, and nose. He had at least one black eye.
The other guy, I learned from the crowd, was one of the two juniors who had gone to the cave. He didn't have as many cuts or bruises but was supporting his weight on one leg and his friend's shoulder. Multiple teachers forced him into a chair while they waited for a nurse to arrive.
While the crowd control was distracted, Aiden sneaked over to me and whispered that we needed to get out of there. A couple of minutes later, the two of us were walking home like nothing had ever happened.
It took me a while before I dared to ask Aiden for the full story. He didn't even let me finish my question, which let me know he was more or less his usual self.
"My family inherited the property everyone calls Skeleton Park. It's not haunted, it's not toxic, it's not the home of a satanic sex cult; it's just a piece of forest that's been in my family for a couple of generations."
He spat a dribble of red onto the sidewalk, and I realized I'd never seen Aiden get violent before. We had our share of bullying this past year, but he would always shrug it off and laugh. He wouldn't even try to fight back. We would just get pushed around a bit, and he'd make a quip afterward about the guys' weight or smell.
"Every summer, my dad and I drive around the perimeter putting up trespassing signs, and every year they get ripped down. We get police calls once a month during the summer that somebody came limping out of there with a broken arm or leg, and they have the balls to demand we do something about it. It's not our fault nobody follows the law around here. It's the fucking woods, and it's our private property. What the hell are we even supposed to do?"
To be honest, I hadn't even considered Skeleton Park could've been private property. Though I believed everything Aiden said, I had never seen any signs along the border wall. Embarrassed from being one of those trespassers, I looked away and stayed silent as Aiden continued.
"The area is just too big. There are too many places to enter, and there's no way to block it all off. Though it's not like that'll stop anybody. I feel bad that somebody died, but I'm also a little bit thankful. Maybe now, people will think twice before messing around out there."
We walked in silence until reaching the junction where we would have to part ways. I was tired and wanted to head home, but I also was worried that Aiden would be jumped by some of the seniors if he was alone. It had happened before, and his earlier brawl could've been seen as a declaration of war.
Instead of voicing these concerns, however, I asked if he wanted to play video games at his house. He was surprised by the request but agreed.
I was on edge with every passing car, and every blind turn, but thankfully we weren’t attacked. After a couple more minutes of walking, we made it to Aiden’s house. His Dad was outside watering the garden. He turned, noticing our approach in the corner of his eye, but his planned greeting died in his mouth when he saw the dried blood coating Aiden’s face.
"Holy Shit! what did you do this time?" he exclaimed, running over to inspect his son’s injuries. "Oh, hey Brian," he added, smiling briefly at me before returning to his analysis.
Mr. Eriks was cool for a dad. Aiden never had a bad thing to say about him, and the way he handled everything that happened in the following months would only increase my admiration for him. He'd raised Aiden by himself, and I would've considered him a second friend if he wasn't 40 years older than me.
After determining the damage wasn't all that bad: a cut on Aidan's forehead and lip producing most of the blood, the three of us went inside.
Aiden went upstairs to take a shower, and his dad privately thanked me for walking him home. It didn’t take long for me to cave, and ask Mr. Eriks about the park.
"Yeah, we do own it," he answered while preparing snacks for Aiden and me. " My wife, Aiden's mom, inherited it before she passed away, and then it was signed over to me. To be honest, I don't know too much about it, and she didn't either. We just used it to go camping there sometimes, back before Aiden was born. Now we go together because it reminds us of her."
"Did you ever run into people up there, when you're camping?"
"Yeah, though not in the fall and winter when we usually go. I have the police's local number on speed dial for when it happens. Usually, it's just teens though. Kids tend to run away as soon as they see an adult with a flashlight. Paranormal or not, they know they're not supposed to be there- You staying with us for dinner Brian?"
At this point, I was too curious about the truth of Skeleton Park to leave, so I nodded and said I just needed to check with my parents.
After a phone call with my mom, some pizza rolls, and a couple of rounds of Fortnite, the afternoon stress had mostly faded away.
Me and Aidan were sitting in his room, scrolling Netflix for a slasher film to watch, when I finally asked what I'd been dying to know the entire afternoon.
"So, why was that guy saying you're a liar?"
Aiden chuckled at the question.
"He refused to believe my family owned the property his friend died on."
"Why did you even say anything? You know that just makes them want to beat you up more, right?"
"I'm tired of everybody using our land like a public park, I'm tired of picking up condoms left by people I go to school with, and I'm tired of keeping quiet about it. I tried explaining it to people in middle school. Our first project in fifth grade was a presentation about something important to us, I did mine about the park. Nobody believed me, and it got me socially exiled for the next four years. "
I ignored the urge to explain that there was probably more to his social exile than a get-to-know-you presentation from four years ago.
"That's fair I guess," I said instead. "You're dad says you go camping there."
"Yeah, on three-day weekends, and sometimes longer on breaks. Mostly in the fall and winter when there are less trespassers."
"You don't find it creepy camping there? Even without the trespassers?"
"You mean because of the silence?" Aiden smiled and looked over at me. "Yeah, the rumor about the animals is true as far as I can tell. Sure. It's kind of weird, but in winter it's kind of beautiful too. After a blizzard, there's nothing to disturb the snow, and it's kinda like the whole forest has gone to sleep. With the snow and no animals, it can get so quiet that you hear your own heart beating."
He looked off past me with a feeling of nostalgia, but all I felt was chills.
"I can take you if you want," Aiden added. "I'll have to ask my dad, but I think it would be fun to have another person camp with us."
"I'll think about it," was my way of declining without saying no.
Aiden just shrugged. "Suit yourself. Offer still stands if you ever change your mind."
Much to my annoyance, we weren’t even able to finish the movie. My Mom called, saying she was outside to pick me up an hour into our viewing of The Blair Witch Project.
I went to bed wondering how anyone could feel safe camping in a place like that. After contemplating taking Aidan up on his offer, I concluded there could be nothing that would make me spend the night there. Ironically, it would be less than a week before I changed my mind.

Three days later, I was walking Paddy along our usual route when she stopped and looked up at something beyond the stone wall, into Skeleton Park. She stood like a statue, eyes wide and fixated on some invisible thing.
I tried tugging the leash, pulling out a treat, begging, and making all kinds of sounds, but she just stood there. Paddy was a six-year-old golden retriever who easily weighed as much as I did, so I couldn't do much more than wait for her to move.
Suddenly, she began barking wildly at the air.
I tried approaching, but she growled at me, a sound I had never heard from her before, and I was forced to back away.
Before I could even process what was happening. She leaped over the wall and ran at full speed into the woods. It all happened so quickly that I had no time to tighten my grip on the leash.
She sprinted straight into the woods, and I chased after her, but I didn't make it far without tripping on a root hidden among the leaves. My knee was split open by something as I fell, and it took all my strength, fighting past the shock, to get back up. After recovering, I looked in all directions, but couldn't see Paddy anymore. I could only hear the tossing of leaves and branches in the distance.
Then there was nothing. Not a single sound. I'm not sure why I didn't question the sudden silence back then. It wasn't the gradual fade into silence you would expect from something running away. It was as if somebody had just hit a mute button on everything but the wind through the trees.
I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering the details.
Patty's disappearance doesn't matter anyway. We never found her, and dogs don’t live for twenty years, so at this point, we never will.
After taking a moment to recover from the shock, I limped home crying and told my parents what had happened. My Dad called the police because it was the only thing we could think of, but all they did was apologize and recommend we put up posters.
They couldn't do anything even if they wanted to. After all, she ran onto private property.
After that, the last thing I could think to do was call Aiden. His dad promised they could search the park that night, and he also offered to take me for an extended search the following weekend in case they didn’t find anything.
Of course, they didn't find her, just half of a leash wrapped around a branch. At least, that's what my parents told me the Eriks had found, they never actually let me see it.
A day before the trip, the Forecast started predicting snow: Saturday night into Sunday, eight inches, wet.
I probably should've given up then. Instead, I told Aiden this would probably be my only chance to find Paddy, insisting she wouldn't survive in the snow. After making sure with his dad, we continued with the plan and headed out after school Friday night.

While it hurts keeping this story in, reliving the memories is almost as painful. So I'm going to take a break writing for now and continue in a day or two. If anyone has a scientific explanation for why animals were avoiding that area, or for my dog's behavior, please let me know.
Thanks for reading, B

2024.05.16 16:22 SleepTightPizza My thoughts as someone new to following the snark subreddits and who was never in a religious community

I was recently introduced to the snark subreddits by someone in my parenting group. I was curious to learn about people having big families and so I wanted to read it for that reason, because we have a big secular family, but honestly, some of the discourse I'm seeing about it from the snarkers is not only really gross, ignorant, and sometimes comes off as mentally unwell, but it leaves me wondering if some of them have ever actually seen a household with a baby, or if they just hate all women and babies.
The generalizations that they make are also weird. I grew up in an abusive household, but my parents were not the least bit religious (just plain old neglectful and self-centered and not understanding that children aren't adults), and the whole fundie world is foreign to me as someone who grew up in a city of mostly autistic yuppies (I say this with fondness as an autist myself). However, I still see stuff that the fundies are doing as just normal human things and find the singling out of them for fundie snark to be weird.
I'm beginning to understand that a lot of the posters grew up as fundies and have idealized fantasies about the rest of the world that simply aren't true.
For example:
None of these are problems that magically go away outside of fundie families. Are they less common outside of fundie households? I don't know. My inclination is to say that no, they're just common human problems.
As an atheist, I do disagree with the teaching of religion the way that fundies typically do it, and wonder about how it affects kids. I disagree with their biblical principles of child rearing, and think that they unfortunately lead to the kinds of adults who are now pathologically snarking on their fundie childhoods. It's obviously not healthy. This is worth criticizing, but the other snark... A lot of it is just hateful.
Anyway, this is just my thoughts as someone new to the community who was curious to see a different way of raising big families, and came away disappointed more in the ignorance of the average snarker than the ignorance of the ones getting snarked on.

2024.05.16 16:16 thechemistrychef At what point does being equitable become just lowering expectations for students?

Question for discussion for teachers. I'm a new teacher and I've been seeing some conflict with old teachers and new teachers at my Title 1 school in a big city about how to handle certain interventions and behaviors, and it got me thinking where is the line for other people on some practices that students can genuinely appreciate but at the same can be interpreted as us being easy on them such as:
-Not starting 1st period exactly at the bell because there's like 4 students in the room, it's good for those who walk in late but it can send a message it's okay to come 10 minutes late every day.
-Having a huge stack of pencils every day; students like having that available but some get a new pencil every day knowing they never need to keep them
-Not locking doors/needing a tardy pass. They miss less instruction time for students especially if they have a good reason to be late, but then being tardy becomes no big deal
-Being allowed to use your phone for online assignments if their tablet is dead/they don't have it. Sometimes they actually do the work but it also makes them less responsible if there's less consequences for not having your school device and being ready
-Keeping all their papers in the room in a class period bin, less chance to lose it, but it makes them less responsible for their belongings.
If you guys remember any other examples please mention, but it's something there seems to be no clear answer for.

Hi SaaS folks,
Could you share what paid ads (ie Google Ads, Instagram Ads, some newsletters, etc) worked the best for you, and what kind of audience you are targeting (ie students, designers, construction, programmers, gym owners, etc)?
For example, I have SaaS that targets construction workers, and only Google Ads work. What about you?
