2024.04.27 02:08 Southern_Category702 Looking for feedback! Beginning of a novel with a murder mystery twist and a saphic relationship

Chapter One: Tamera I pushed a lock of long brown hair out of my face as I climbed out of my van in the parking lot of the cafe. The more bodies that piled up in the morgue, the more stressed the whole town got. And seeing as none of the six bodies found in the three week span had any real connections other than being found in our tiny town, Bronston, New Hampshire, I couldn’t start compiling a real list of suspects. I had no real clues, aside from the bodies and the calling card. An overlapping set of initials. CRW, artistically positioned next to, or on, each body. I'd looked at all the locals, and no one fit the initial sets. The medium used to leave the letters changed each time, and seemed like it was usually means of convenience. Markers taken from the families fridge, condiments, spices, fridge magnets. I made a mental note to call Gabby Sandford, the lead detective in Pittsburgh's homicide division. We were old friends, after all me leaving had opened the spot for her. She might have some murders with a similar pattern, I hoped.
I don't know why these people were killed, as there's no connection between them, not status or age or even gender. Take the first victim, Sally Jennings, 24, female, firmly middle class. Dead, in her car. Randall, her neighbor, had found her, the poor guy. But then our most recent victim, Jasper King, was the owner of a big company in the city, King's Investments. He'd been found dead in his secretaries' bed, by his secretary, and on top of mourning, his poor wife was devastated. Victim number four, Eden Fleury, had been a divorcee and a mother. She lived with her two teenagers, when they weren’t with their dad. Thankfully they hadn’t found her, she’d been found by her maid service. But she came from old money, and had no ties to anyone else on the quickly growing list of deceased. The killings just did not make sense when lined up together. The timing was random too, no apparent trigger.
All six bodies had been given thallium; a slow acting poison commonly used on rats, and found in trace amounts in certain vegetables. It's also found in the manufacture of electronic components, optical lenses, semiconductor materials, alloys, gamma radiation detection equipment, imitation jewelry, artist's paints, low temperature thermometers, and green fireworks. It’s incredibly easy to access and is even harder to trace to a manufacturer. Who murders someone with what is basically rat poison? It's rather slow acting and has symptoms that can be dismissed as typical illnesses. I was on my lunch break, but the murders never took a break from repeating in my mind 24/7.
I sighed as I walked into Huggamug Café. I glanced around to see my usual waitress, Vanessa, sitting alone at a table with a grilled cheese and a glass of milk. She's still pretty new to Bronston. She has quite the story attached to her. Her daughter died suddenly, about five years ago, then her lawyer husband suddenly left her, about a year later he passed away mysteriously. Right now she looks particularly sad, although normally her round face and large hazel eyes, coupled with full pink lips, and a smile that lights up a room give her a happy, innocent appearance. I know what makes her lips pull into a frown, and her eyes appear misty even from here. Today is the fifth anniversary of her daughter's passing. I wander over and sit across from her. She looks up as I sit and flashes me a polite, small smile. I return it, and pat her hand. We sit in silence as she finishes her sandwich and then she stands, wipes the table with a napkin, and smiles again.
"I'll go put in your order, Tamera" She says quickly, as she gathers her plate and cup.
She's gone before I can respond. I sit back and wait, thinking over the last kill. Jasper King had been found alone in his secretary's bed, naked, with two bruised ribs, a broken wrist and a nasty bruise on his jaw. Cause of death is the same as the other victims, thallium. I notice Vanessa approaching my table, and glance down at my watch. That was fast.
"You needn't have rushed it Nessa. I didn't mind." I say as she stops at the edge of the table. She shakes her head, and sighs.
"I shouldn't have been sitting there sulking, I'm sorry. Here you go, just how you like it. Vanilla crepes with whipped cream and strawberries, and hot cocoa." She says as she sets down the plate. I smile and thank her. I reach for my cup, my hands locking around it and feel the warmth seep through the warm ceramic mug into my clasped fingers.
After she leaves my brain goes back to the case. These murders felt like a message, but to who? And what is the message? I have no clue, so I decide to take a break to just eat and relax. Of course, relaxation is easier said than done. I shake my head, and then have a small heart attack as someone pops up at my elbow.
"Is there something wrong with your food?" Vanessa asked from beside me, "you were shaking your head, and also you haven't touched it." She added helpfully, looking at me curiously.
"No, no the food is fabulous as always hon. I was just thinking about these damn murders. We found another body early this morning." I was hoping she might have some sort of input. I had learned, sometimes, the breaks in the case came from fresh eyes.
She took a seat across from me. She sighed and stared at her fingers. I had a feeling she had something to say, but what was it? Whatever it was, my gut was telling me it would be important. I leaned closer, as she opened her mouth and sucked in a breath before saying.
"These murders, what exactly is it that seems off about them? I mean besides, the whole killing part. Clearly something isn’t adding up, you don’t seem like the type of detective to ask strangers for input if you have a good idea on what’s going on. What is the biggest connection, not between the people but between the scenes?" She asked it like a good lawyer, which wasn't shocking. After all, being married to a lawyer had to rub off on a person a bit didn't it? I decided to dodge that question, because we hadn't released the calling card to the public at all yet.
Instead I asked a new question, one that had crept to the front of my mind as she spoke. I still hadn’t brought up that I knew what today was for her, I wanted to see if maybe she needed to talk about it. Being a cop had taught me sometimes, the best way to hang the guilty was to convince them to tie themselves up and jump.
"Say, Vanessa, what's your last name? I know that must seem random, but I just realized I never learned it. Did you keep your husband's name?" I was only asking because I had indeed just realized I didn't know, and therefore hadn't checked her name off my suspects list.
"No, I kept my maiden name, Winters. Why would I have wanted a name like Driscoll? That's ridiculous, Vanessa Driscoll? No thank you ma'am." She gave a breathless laugh and shook her head. Winters, Vanessa Winters.
As I was pondering it, it hit me, the urge to make sure she was okay. I felt a weirdly fierce need to make sure she was alright, and to somehow make it better if she wasn’t.
"Isn't today the anniversary of your daughter's passing? What was her name?" I ask softly, not wanting to upset her.
"Yes, today is the fourth year since she passed. My little Cynthia Rose, you know she had my maiden name too? Cynthia Rose Winters. Such a pretty baby." Tears welled in her eyes, and I felt bad, for upsetting her by asking. I had wanted to comfort her, but what could I even say to her that would offer any comfort to the wound of losing her only child in a brutal drive-by?
I pondered over the tragedy, and how awful that much loss must be to carry around. And then I realized the initials. Cynthia Rose Winters, C.R.W, what were the odds? The murders had begun three weeks ago, and Miss Vanessa had moved here 2 weeks before they started. The timing was a little too perfect to be coincidental. Not that meant she was a murderer, I hoped, I was beginning to really like her. But I liked my neighbors and friends too much to be blinded by budding feelings and not investigate this new path of information.
"Oh, how cute. I love that." I say, as I stuff crepe into my mouth.
Given the timing and the initials she may be the one, but she may not. And that's a jump I don’t want to take without more evidence. And I intend to get some, even if I have to never let her out of my sight again. I will not allow another death in my town. I need to stop this now. Right now. We chat for a few more minutes, and then she glances at the clock and snaps to her feet. I watch as she walks away, she runs a few more plates and then goes into the back, hangs up her apron and walks outside to her truck. That's my cue, time to leave.
I get up, leaving the cash on my table, along with a tip and wander out to my car. I follow her out onto the main road, and keep a healthy distance behind as she heads to her house. I park across the street, up a few houses. About 30 minutes later, she comes out and leaves. She’s changed her entire outfit, her pretty black slacks and white blouse, with practical black flats topped with little satin bows gone in exchange for a black hoodie, black leggings and running shoes. She takes off down the block at a slow jogging pace. I wait with bated breath as she jogs past, and as soon as she’s about a block ahead, I go to open the door, to follow. As my hand meets the cold metal of the handle, my phone rings. It's the Medical Examiner, Evelyn Moore. I scoop up the phone, my eyes on Vanessa’s quickly retreating figure as it fades into the fast falling twilight. I listen as the voice on the other end greets me, and cuts right to the chase.
Crap. Well, I guess I'll have to follow her more later. The autopsy report is ready. I tell Evelyn I’m on my way and start the car, carefully pulling into the street and turning away from the path Vanessa had just vanished on.

2024.04.19 04:22 genemaxwell4 Desperate need of help! Vault 95 walls are glitching! [FO4]

Hello everyone. I've finally upgraded my dinosaur PC with new parts and I'm able to play FO4 on PC for the first time since it's release (prior to this I was on Xbox) I loaded up some mods and everything has been working great for about 58 hours. Until now. I'm in Vault 95 and there have been a couple walls that are just bright white and when you move near them the screen seems to "shake" like it's a really terrible visual glitch. I can't figure out the problem. I've verified my files integrity. I've got the Unofficial patch. I've got the latest Script Extender.
I'm at a loss. Here is my mod list and load order

2024.04.19 04:18 genemaxwell4 Need help! Have a white wall glitch in Vault 95!

2024.04.18 21:44 Bluest-Of-Falcons Neighbor Karen gets evicted.

So I'd shared parts of this previously but there were updates I never got to finish. It is not a short one, but it is very satisfying.
TL;DR Our duplex neighbor was a pain in the ass so we tormented her for nearly a year. She eventually got herself evicted.
I shared a duplex with my then GF and her son, 7. To fully understand all of this I have to lay out the geography: This is a single house duplex with both doors in the middle with a shared small front porch. The house was built on the side of a hill. Our half was on the uphill side. So underneath the other unit are both garages, side by side. The sidewalk comes up from the garages in front of the other unit directly onto the shared front porch. There's also a back porch but it has a divider so we share a moderate amount of privacy. We got a new neighbor one day, but didn't meet her until a couple weeks after she'd moved in. We'll call her Karen. She's mid-late 50's skinny, and has cats. Lots of cats. We can see them in the windows. Our meeting went as such:
One day we're out washing our cars in the front yard, me the GF & her kid. The hose wouldn't reach the driveway. I also have a pair of motorcycles that I'm washing, too. They will be important later. We're having a fun afternoon in the sun, playing with the hose, you know the scene. All kinds of cute & happy. This is when our new neighbor comes home.
Karen drives along the driveway, parks in the garage, and walks up the sidewalk where we are. We politely introduce ourselves, and even joke that if she pulls her car up here we'd wash it, too. She all but ignores us and walks straight to her door. We shrug it off. But then she returns and goes straight vapor lock, setting the mood for the rest of the year. She starts nagging in an angry, almost screaming tone that she doesn't want us on her half of the yard. We can't be on her half (which included the sidewalk since it went through her half of the front yard). We needed to get off her side of the yard. Since the sidewalk was on her half it was hers and we couldn't use it. We would have to go around the back to get to our door. (That's not happening). And she also wants us to stop using the garage door opener because she doesn't like the noise it makes when we do. (That's Obviously not happening.) She's pissing off my GF and scaring her kid. I have to calm them both down and get them inside while Karen is still yelling with a jabbing finger.
Now I'm an easy going guy, I can let it roll off. but the GF & kid didn't deserve that. I got them both to calm down, (he needed ice cream, she needed a beer & smoke). And Karen needed to be taught a lesson. I go to put the cars & bikes away. It's during this that I can hear Karen through the garage ceiling on the phone with what I can only assume is our landlord, bitching about how rude and insufferable we are. We scare her cats (really) and we keep running the garage door and it bothers her. She doesn't like it. We just have to go. The lightbulb goes off:
Both of my bikes are carbureted, and for the LIFE of me, I can't remember the last time I had them adjusted. Since car washing was cut short, maybe I can do that instead. I pull mine and the GF's car out of the garage, I'm going to need the space. Then I park the bikes side by side, exhaust pipes facing into the garage. I break out the tools, and start with the little one: She's a 2001 V-star 1100 classic. I named her Molly. Vance & Hines pipes, but they're still pretty loud. I crank Molly up and whale on that throttle while I fine tune the throttle body. Just Ripping it, as loud as she can, filling that garage with all of the noise. Keep that up for a few minutes, then let her rest a minute. When I finally put Molly to bed, I can finally hear Karen stomping on the floor and yelling at me. I yell back. "Okay, Karen. Just one more to go. Only be a few minutes.
Then I turn my attention to Black Betty. She's the '08 Vulcan MeanStreak limited edition. She's an 1800. She has pipes too, but the baffles may or may not have been drilled out. Before I can crank it up I hear her calling what I assume is the LL and yelling that she doesn't care about a lease, she wants us kicked out. She just won't stand for it. I didn't catch the rest of it as Betty was clearing her throat. I gave up the subterfuge of actually working on it and just held the throttle open for a moment, then rest, then throttle, then rest. Kept that up until my own ears started ringing. Then put the vehicles away. She was still stomping on the floor and talking on the phone. I assumed this was someone other than the LL because she's retelling the same story again. Also, did I mention that we're friends with the landlord? Yeah so once I'm back inside, the GF is on the phone with him. We tell our side. He laughs at my prank with the bike, then asks me not to do that anymore.
We finish off the evening with some TV while Karen is still screaming. Her voice is wavering as though she might be angry crying. In the coming months it only got worse. But in that moment, the most committed of Meth heads could not match me for the endorphin rush I got from hearing her rant and squeal. A few days later, I'm out on my way to work. I leave at about 6 to make it in time to have breakfast at the desk before I log on at 7. I go around to the garage, and "Karen" has left her car outside her garage and positioned it so I can't get my car out. I knock on her door, and of course she doesn't answer. Bang on it a few more times. Nothing. I even yell at the door, "Hey "karen" you're blocking my car. I need to get to work!" This is clearly her petty revenge for the bikes, I'm sure. Good shot, Karen. Good one.
Fortunately it's a nice day so I can just take one of them to work. The bike can fit around her car. But thanks to her, I wasn't going to have time to enjoy my breakfast once I got there. That evening, I came home and her car was still there. So instead of putting it back in the garage, I leave the bike parked behind her car, just at the edge of the street. Now I know what you're thinking; "But OP, what if she backs into it?" And I was kinda hoping that was where it would go. See, I've got great insurance and an even better lawyer. But no. This is how petty she is, she calls the cops.
Come knock on our door?? Push the bike over?? Go through the front yard?? No. Calls the cops. The nice police man informs me that I'm blocking her car from exiting. (Yeah that was kinda the point) I inform him that "She started it." (I felt like a kid saying that.) And honestly we would have called the police on her for this shit this morning, but it seemed juvenile, and a waste of their time. Also; I had to get to work. Cop's response; "Yes, but that's why we're here." That's just sad. Let's me know our species is doomed. Anyway, once I explained the whole thing, Mr. Police man knocks on her door, addresses himself and gets her to come outside. We explain the whole mess, Cop asks; "Is this true?" She admits it, but can't produce a reason for it. Cop scolds us both for being childish and to stop blocking the driveway. Says he doesn't want to have to come back out to our residence again. HA! Yeah, Okay...
That weekend, we go over to the neighbors for a few drinks. No, not that one. She doesn't like us. The next duplex over. Their porch is about 30 feet or so from the original scene of the crime. We're not being loud, no music. Just a handfull of us grilling out and drinking beers. Oh, and among the guests this evening is our LL himself. Did I mention we were in good with him? So anyway, sure enough the nice police man comes by. It's not the same officer as time, but the po-po nonetheless. He comes to the deck, flashlight in hand. Says he got a noise complaint call. Clearly it was her. But what is rib bustingly hilarious, is that the officer said the noise complaint was placed by - wait for it - the Landlord of the house! Yeah, no shit. Anyways, LL steps forward and says, "Funny, I don't remember calling to complain about myself." Once again we explain EVERYTHING to the officer. He chuckles, asks us to "Keep it down." and leaves. After that, Mr. LL goes over to her unit. Of course she doesn't answer the door, but he speak loud enough for her to hear, letting her know what she did "Wasn't cool."
After that we tried to avoid one another. There would be minor shit like, UPS package is dropped for her, we find it on our side and move it over. Later on we'll hear through the door "Keep your hands off my stuff!" Or other headaches that make us wish her cats would turn on her. Few weeks later I'd gotten a promotion at work so we threw a party. Sure enough the cops were called again. This one was not placed by the LL. But he was still there. He yells over at her door "Hey "Karen", this is getting old."
This next instance I can't quite take credit for. But "Karen" had built this obnoxious awning to cover her side of the porch out back. She never uses the porch so why bother? However, I clearly remember a stipulation in our lease that says we are not allowed to modify the exterior of the units at all. Maybe hers is different. Maybe I should call LL and find out: What's that? No? She doesn't get to make modifications either? Oh well she did. So he makes her remove it. Again, because we're in good with him, he shares the tale with us, how she bitched, then begged, then relented. It was ear candy. Speaking of Candy....
Come Halloween, I'd decorated the yard. I had heard from multiple neighbors of ours that their children were frightened of my front yard come Halloween. By this point, I should have guessed, though, that the lines were being drawn with "Karen", figuratively and literally. I had to move some of my decorations, and that included the 15 foot ghost on the roof of the unit. I had to move it all the way over onto my side. So come Halloween night, we took her son out trick-or-treating. And literally every kid we saw, we told them to go by her place. She had the GOOD candy. And lots of it. But she's old and hard of hearing, so you'll have to bang the door pretty hard., No, she won't mind. She's a sweet lady. Now, I realize this was also mean to the kids who went to her door. But they were each a worthy sacrifice on the Altar of Petty Revenge.
Finale season. It's been about 10+months now. The cops hadn't had to come back out and no one had been cussed out in a while. One evening, we hear a splatter coming from the kitchen. Go in and find the pipe has busted under the sink and spraying. I quickly go out to the main and close it. But because this is a duplex, I've cut off water to her side as well. She's not home yet. So we call our buddy the LL. He comes and addresses the issue, small part to fix it. Needs to run to HomeDepot. Be right back. Meanwhile I type up a note for "Karen's" door. I let her know we had a leak, had to shut off the water, but it should be fixed within an hour or 2. Even thanked her for her understanding. While he's gone we clean up the water. It was a lot. Then, before he returns we hear the splatter again. At first, I'm a little confused. I know I'd turned it off. But then it clicks. I go outside, and there's "Karen" holding a pipe wrench. "Hey! Didn't you see my note?" "Yes, but my cats need water." "Yes, but now you're flooding our unit." "I NEED WATER!" My GF comes out and goes off shouting, calling her a Bitch. Next door neighbors hear and come out. It's a show, now. I go get my wrench to close the main valve again, but she won't move out of the way. She's literally blocking me. I half expect her to take her wrench to my head. So I back off. Sure enough, LL arrives at the shitshow. "Hey, we left her a note, she ignored it and started the water again." "Wait, she what?" Then he turns to light into her, cussing her out. I take advantage of her distraction to go kill the water again. But at this point the damage is done. It's been running long enough that the carpets are soaked, and the water is pouring out the front door. Meanwhile LL is still yelling at her. "Alright, "Karen," that's it. You're out of here! This is your 30 days." "Bullshit. I've already signed next year's lease!" "But I haven't yet. It's worthless. Tear it up. And I'm taking your deposit to pay for their damages." She melts."But... but, I don't have anywhere else to go." She continues to argue and cry about her deposit. She'll need that for her next apartment. She can't afford to move. She threatens small-claims court to get it back. The argument rages on while I take GF & son to go get packed. We can't stay here tonight. We spent the next couple of nights at a hotel while the carpets were redone. He bought the beer & ribs for the next BBQ. Few more weeks go by without so much as a peep from her. One day we come home and she's just gone. Porch, garage, and apartment all cleaned out. I'm almost disappointed she didn't say goodbye.

  • Visit Tallahassee (old Amtrak Station): Understanding the LGBTQ History of Tallahassee. What would a queer history of Tallahassee look like? What are the most important developments in the writing of queer and LGBT history, and how can they be applied to interpreting the queer experience in Tallahassee over the past 200 years? One of the first academic authors of gay and lesbian history earned his PhD at Florida State in the early 1970s and taught some of the first university courses on LGBT history and culture in the nation on the Florida State campus. Why isn’t this story better known, and how can we build on this legacy? How can theory help ensure that we write histories that acknowledge the centrality of race, class, gender, and gender identity, while also always foregrounding issues of political power, labor, coercion, and class? Theory is not about making what is simple obscure, but instead about helping us to see mechanisms at work, and lives lived, that may have left only faint traces in the archive, rounding out and completing the evidence that has survived in greater abundance. Join Professor Charles Upchurch, Professor of British & LGBTQ History at Florida State University, for a 40-minute illustrated exploration of all of these themes as they relate to Tallahassee’s queer history. 5pm/free

2024.04.18 14:18 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Dennis Rasmussen

"It was a privilege to play in New York, and I'd wish it for anybody. Anyone who goes to New York, you can't put yourself in a better position. To understand what it's like, to put on the Yankee uniform, the pinstripes... it's almost magical." -- Dennis Rasmussen
Dennis Rasmussen wove in and out of Yankee history, getting traded to the Yankees for Tommy John, then getting traded by the Yankees for John Montefusco, then getting traded to the Yankees for Graig Nettles, and then getting traded by the Yankees for Bill Gullickson!
Dennis Lee Rasmussen was born April 18, 1959 -- happy birthday! -- in Los Angeles, California. He was riding his bike in San Clemente as a freshman in high school when he was hit by a car; his leg was so badly injured doctors thought they might have to amputate his foot. Fortunately, the foot was saved -- though he no longer has any cartilage in his left ankle -- and just six months after the accident he was playing high school basketball again.
That summer, the family moved to Idaho for two years, then to Colorado for his senior year. He graduated from Bear Creek High School, where he played basketball, baseball, and tennis, winning the state doubles championship.
Rasmussen was drafted out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he declined to sign a contract, preferring to take an offer of a full ride from Creighton University to play basketball. The 6'7" forward would later say that he had always preferred playing baseball, but knew basketball was his ticket to a college scholarship... because he wanted to be a dentist!
At Creighton, Rasmussen usually came off the bench as, in his own words, "a sixth man who could give the starters a blow and not have the team lose anything." Rasmussen scored 347 points in 68 games, made two March Madness runs, and beat Larry Bird's Indiana State University team three times.
But Rasmussen's mind was still on baseball. He had worked out an agreement with the basketball coaches that he could play baseball once March Madness was over, and he said after basketball practices he'd pitch to get ready for the baseball season by pitching to a catcher in an empty gym. It worked: During his junior year at Creighton, he set a school record with 84 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings pitched.
When it was time to turn pro, Rasmussen had an easy choice: he was drafted in the first round (#17 overall) by the Angels in the 1980 MLB draft, but not at all in the NBA draft. In a 2021 interview with Rocco Costantino, he said it was a surprise he'd been drafted at all, let alone in the 1st round -- and he was still thinking about becoming a dentist. But the Angels offered him a $80,000 bonus, so he signed the contract. Dental school could wait!
Rasmussen quickly climbed through the ranks in the Angels' minor league system -- A ball in 1980, Double-A in 1981, Triple-A in 1982. In 1982 he went 11-8 with a 5.03 ERA, not great, but this was the offense-crazy Pacific Coast League, where the league average was 5.44 runs per game. It was good enough, in fact, to catch the eye of the New York Yankees.
On August 31, 1982, the Yankees traded Tommy John to the Angels for players to be named later. (John, who had been with the Yankees since 1979, went 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA in seven starts with the Angels, then 1-1 in two starts in the post-season. In 1986 he returned to the Yankees for the final four seasons of his career.) Reports at the time said the Yankees were getting back three mid-level prospects. The Yankees decided to bundle them and turn the three mid-level prospects into one top prospect -- Rasmussen.
After just a year in the Yankee organization -- and going 13-10 in Triple-A, with a 4.57 ERA, 1.486 WHIP, and 187 Ks in 181.0 innings, but never making it to the Show -- Rasmussen was for the second time in his career the "player to be named later." In August, the Yankees acquired veteran starter John Montefusco from the Padres, and a month later, the Yankees completed the deal by sending back Rasmussen and minor league infielder Edwin Rodriguez.
Maybe the funniest story about Rasmussen is about what happened next. Rasmussen and Rodriguez arrived at the San Diego airport, not knowing where to go or what to do, and Rasmussen saw Ted Giannoulas, the San Diego Chicken... though he wasn't in costume. "We all knew him because he was always in our clubhouse getting dressed, but nobody else would recognize him," Rasmussen told BallNine.com. Giannoulas recognized Rasmussen, too, and asked him how he was getting to the ballpark.
"He asked if anyone was picking us up and I told him there wasn’t. He said, 'I got you covered. My limo is waiting for me at the airport, you can ride with me.' We got off the plane and rode into town in the San Diego Chicken’s limo. That was my first ride to the Big Leagues."
Rasmussen made his MLB debut on September 16, pitching two scoreless innings in relief in a 6-0 loss to the Braves. He pitched three more times that season, for a total of 13.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and eight walks. But he also struck out 13.
Rasmussen looked like he would be competing for a start in the Padres rotation the following season. Instead, just six months after the Yankees traded him to the Padres, the Padres traded him back to the Yankees... for a Yankee legend who had worn out his welcome.
During the 1983-1984 off-season, veteran third baseman Graig Nettles wrote a tell-all book in the style of Jim Bouton's Ball Four and Sparky Lyle's The Bronx Zoo called Balls. It did not portray the early 1980s Yankees -- or George Steinbrenner -- in a favorable light.
Steinbrenner wanted Nettles off the team, but Nettles could veto a trade he didn't like. So Steinbrenner had to engineer a deal with a team Nettles wouldn't say no to -- his hometown San Diego Padres.
In exchange, the Yankees took back Rasmussen and yet another PTBNL, this time minor league pitcher Darin Cloninger.
Rasmussen opened the 1984 season in Triple-A for a third straight season, but was called up a month into the season. He made his first start as a Yankee on May 23, throwing eight shutout innings against the Mariners with two hits, three walks, and 10 strikeouts. His next start wasn't as impressive, giving up six runs on four hits and two walks (but another seven Ks) to his old team, the Angels, on May 28. In his first two months in pinstripes, 10 starts, Rasmussen went 1-3 with a 6.32 ERA and 1.309 WHIP in 58.0 innings. But he turned it around over the second half, going 8-3 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.241 WHIP.
Despite his impressive second half, Rasmussen for whatever reason was in Steinbrenner's dog house. Maybe he was still mad about Nettles and decided to take it out on the guy he got for him.
In any event, it seemed like the big lefty could do no right in the Boss's eyes. On July 22, 1985, Rasmussen was 3-4 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.329 WHIP -- not great, but at the time it meant he was the team's second best starter behind Ron Guidry. (The other starters were Joe Cowley, Ed Whitson, and 46-year-old Phil Niekro -- it was not exactly a strong rotation.)
That night's game at the Kansas City Royals was ABC's Game of the Week, and Steinbrenner was in the booth with Howard Cosell. "If Dennis Rasmussen doesn't pitch well today," Steinbrenner vowed on live television, "I'm going to send him to the minors."
Rasmussen didn't give up a run over the first four innings, but in the 5th gave up two runs on three hits and a hit-by-pitch. Rasmussen was pulled and reliever Rich Bordi allowed both inherited runners to score. Sure enough, the following day Rasmussen was exiled to Triple-A, and the Yankees replaced him with Marty Bystrom, who in eight starts posted a 5.71 ERA and 1.537 WHIP. Thanks to a generous 4.68 runs scored per game in his starts, Bystrom was 3-2, but what if Rasmussen had stuck in the rotation, and in those eight starts pitched around the level he had been at when sent down -- a 3.87 ERA? The Yankees that year finished two games behind the Blue Jays for first place and the difference may have been Steinbrenner's comments while in the booth with Howard Cosell.
Rasmussen returned from the minors when rosters expanded in September and he was was ineffective in four relief appearances, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks in four innings, so maybe it wouldn't have mattered anyway.
In Spring Training 1986, sportswriters gave Rasmussen a slim chance of making the rotation after what had happened the previous year. There appeared to be no room for him, anyway, with a projected Yankee rotation of Ron Guidry, Britt Burns, Joe Niekro, Phil Niekro, and Ed Whitson.
The Yankees also had in camp the player Rasmussen had been traded for in 1982 -- the about-to-be 43-year-old Tommy John, who had been released at the end of the 1985 season. John went unsigned that winter -- it was later cited as an example of alleged collusion by the major league owners -- and went to Yankee camp that Spring Training as a non-roster invitee just in case one of the other starters didn't work out.
In fact, two of them didn't. The Yankees released the 47-year-old Phil Niekro after a disastrous spring training, and Burns, acquired from the White Sox that off-season and tabbed to be the Yankees' #2 starter, hurt his hip and never pitched in pinstripes.
Then John, the insurance policy, hurt his back and didn't return until May.
Rasmussen said years later in an interview with the New York Daily News, Steinbrenner -- for a second time -- proclaimed to the world that Rasmussen would be sent to Triple-A. It happened after a bad outing against the Texas Rangers in Spring Training:
"I was pitching in Pompano Beach, and the wind was blowing out, short ballpark, and I gave up a wind-blown home run to Curtis Wilkerson, and I got taken out of the game shortly thereafter. Mr. Steinbrenner stood up in the stands, apparently, among many writers, and said, 'That's it, I've seen enough, you're on your way to Columbus.' But then Tommy John got hurt, pulled something in his back, so I got another chance."
Instead of Triple-A yet again, the injury to Tommy John meant Rasmussen not only made the team, but became the staff ace, going 18-6 with a 3.88 ERA and 1.158 WHIP in 202.0 IP. But once again the team came up short, finishing 5.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox, who went 95-66 and then this happened.
As good as his numbers were that season, they likely would have been even better if not for getting hit by a line drive on his pitching elbow on July 22. To that point in the season, Rasmussen was 12-2 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.084 WHIP. He would then be out the next two weeks before returning August 5. Over the rest of the season, he was 6-4 with a 4.94 ERA and 1.296 WHIP, including a 5.10 ERA and 1.370 WHIP in September.
Rasmussen got off to a hot start the following season, going 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA in his first eight starts, but by August 25 he was 9-7 with a 4.75 ERA. The Yankees, after battling for first place most of the season, fell to 4 games out and Steinbrenner wanted to make a move, trading Rasmussen to the White Sox for Bill Gullickson.
After it was announced that the Yankees had traded Rasmussen away for the second time in his career, reporters gathered around him for one last interview as he emptied his locker. The last thing he removed was something he had taped there after the previous year's spring training. It was a baseball card of Curtis Wilkerson -- the player who had hit the wind-blown home run off him that had so angered Steinbrenner!
Gullickson went 4-2 with a 4.88 ERA for the Yankees, but Rasmussen went 4-1 with a 3.97 ERA for the Reds. It likely wouldn't have mattered anyway, as the Yankees finished the season 9 games out. Gullickson, a free agent at the end of the season, went to Japan for two seasons, then returned to the majors and was a 20-game winner with Detroit in 1991.
The following year he was 2-6 with a 5.75 ERA for the Reds back to the Padres for pitching prospect Candy Sierra. Back in San Diego, he went 14-4 with a 2.55 ERA in 148.1 innings, and then the following year 11-15 with a 4.51 ERA. In 1991 he was 6-13, but with a 3.74 ERA, in his final year in San Diego. He had three more injury-plagued seasons, playing for the Cubs and Royals.
His final major league appearance came for the Royals on July 1, 1995 -- giving up three runs on five hits and three walks in 5.1 innings -- and his playing days ended in 1996, at age 37, after he tore his hamstring while pitching for the Rimini Baseball Club in the Italian League. He stayed in the game as a minor league pitching coach for three seasons, then quit baseball entirely in 1999 in order to stay home and with his family and to help run the family business -- the Dairy Grille in Charlevoix, Michigan.
After 20 years away from the game, he returned in 2021 to coach in summer collegiate leagues, and now is the pitching coach of the Billings Mustangs in the Pioneer League.
Even at age 65, he still pitches batting practice!
Rasmusing
"One of my best memories happened when we were coming off a road trip. I had pitched a great game right before we came back. Yankee Stadium had that marquis outside and sometimes they’d put messages for players. Usually, it just said, 'Game Tonight,' but every now and then they would have something like 'Louisiana Lightning Strikes.' So, after that road trip I was driving south on the Deegan towards Yankee Stadium and I look out at the marquis and it read, 'Rasmatazz!' I probably never smiled more or was more proud. I wish I had a picture of it, but I surely wasn’t stopping on the Deegan to do that." -- Dennis Rasmussen
Overall, in 12 major league seasons, Rasmussen was 91-77 (.542 W%) with a 4.15 ERA (94 ERA+) and 1.332 WHIP; in four seasons with the Yankees, Rasmussen went 39-24 (.619 W%) with a 4.28 ERA (96 ERA+) and 1.272 WHIP.
Not bad for a guy Boss George twice tried to banish to the minors!

2024.04.17 13:43 YinzWantFries923 Neighbor living with no lights, gas or water.

Hi,
I just moved to this area but have lived in Pittsburgh all my life.
A man across the street from me is living in a house with no outside stairs ( he climbs up the steps of the next door house to get into his) no heat, light or gas. I deduce that he has no utilities because he has a small grill he cooks from every so often and theres never any lights on ever.
People in the neighborhood said he has no water and goes out every morning to eat at homeless shelters and washes at the public library and Shepards Place.
I did a pa tax assessment search and his name is definitely listed as an owner. Is it legal and safe for him to be living in there like that?
He has the grill on a porch when he cooks which is a safety hazard within itself.
I suppose him having some roof over his head is better than being homeless. Its just concerning to me.
Should I just mind my business? There are two houses in the area where people are living like this, but this guy owns his.
Bought for $500.00.
Thanks for any replies.
Edit: just looked at the Pa Tax Assessment site and he hasn’t paid taxes in two years. Should I just wait for the city to intervene, or is it ok for him to live there like this?

They simply said: Black Lives Matter; and for that, they were labelled terrorists. In this empowering account of survival, strength and resilience, Patrisse Khan-Cullors and award-winning author and journalist asha bandele recount the personal story that led Patrisse to become a founder of Black Lives Matter, seeking to end the culture that declares Black life expendable. Curator of Herpetology, Associate Chair, Department of Natural History, Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida. Dr. Blackburn studies the diversity, evolution, and natural history of amphibians and reptiles. His lab conducts research in the field, in the lab, and in museum collections. Access to the collections of natural history museums has long been restricted to specialists in specific scientific disciplines. By creating digital representatives of specimens and objects, museums are bringing the behind-the-scenes to classrooms, scientists, and the public. These digital specimens enable new, large-scale studies of biodiversity past and present, and provide hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages. The Florida Museum of Natural History—the state’s only university-based museum—is an international leader in research and education, and offers many research and outreach opportunities for scientists across the state. 7pm

2024.04.07 15:29 ImCzone Cheese and parsley sausage

I'm looking to see if anyone is aware of anywhere in Pittsburgh that sells cheese and parsley sausage. It usually comes in a thin ring, but I've also seen it sold as links. It's my favorite type of sausage to throw on the grill for a nice, easy meal. I can't seem to find anywhere in Pittsburgh that sells it though, so I wanted to see if any of you have come across it anywhere.
Thanks in advance for the help!
