2024.05.15 04:21 Farting_Potato The saga of my struggles with my dad since I got married and had a kid: a very long vent

As a long time lurker, I recently read the post about signs that you were raised by narcissistic parents and realized that maybe I had more of a problem than I wanted to admit. In light of this, I wanted to share/vent my recent struggle and get some outside perspective because at this point I've been in my own head for way too long.
To set the stage: my wife (29F) and I (29M) live in southern California. My parents split their time between northern California and Vegas (all 4-6+ hours away by car). My wife's mother lives close by (about 30 minutes away).
This all started when my wife and I decided we wanted to elope for our wedding. Our jobs have extremely rigid, time-consuming schedules, so finding time to do even this was hard enough. My wife wanted a June anniversary, so the only date we could make work happened to be Father's Day that year. My mom was also out of the country at the time. Despite originally not having any problem with our plan, my dad later changed his mind, invited himself to the "ceremony", and sulked the entire lunch afterward with her family to the point where everyone felt uncomfortable. He was upset that we chose to get married on Father's Day, while my mom was out of town. At the time I felt very guilty. However, our plan was just to spend literally a couple hours signing some papers. I didn't see a need to make my parents drive 8 hours round trip just to watch us sign some documents. We were even planning a celebration trip later on (that most definitely will not be happening now lol), so all the more reason we felt that they didn't need to be a part of this. Now we can't even look at the pictures from that day without feeling all the awkwardness of that day that he inserted himself into.
Then when my wife was pregnant, my mother-in-law's friend reached out and mentioned she had a ton of baby stuff that she wanted to give us, which we were more than happy to accept. This friend lived in Vegas, so I asked my parents if they could go grab the stuff. My dad immediately got upset and tried to convince me not to accept it. I didn't really understand why, but ultimately my mom ended up going to get it. Then when we requested they deliver the stuff to us a couple months before my daughter would be born, my dad again resisted and said he was busy with work and "did we really need the stuff now." I ultimately gave up my only two days off in a 30 day stretch of work to drive to and from Vegas myself to get the stuff in a timely manner. Naturally, my wife was very unhappy with this situation.
When my daughter was born, my dad decided they would visit us to meet the baby. They visited for a day around two weeks postpartum. They brought some food for us, took some pictures, but quickly left again. My wife was furious. She felt like that it had been more about them seeing the baby rather than caring about her in her vulnerable and exhausted state. I agreed, and at this point the stress of being new parents along with my inability to put my foot down against my parents was putting a strain on our relationship.
Then a couple months later, my mother flew in to live with us for a week to help with the baby. We had planned to enjoy a nice lunch and have a fun day on Sunday before she flew back to thank her for her help. We had all agreed on this being the plan, but a couple days before that Sunday, my dad called and stated that he had cancelled my mom's flight and that he'd drive over and pick her up on Saturday instead, skipping the Sunday plans altogether. We negotiated that he at least let us take her out to lunch on Sunday, which he finally agreed to, but then said he'd join us for lunch and to add him to the reservation. Now growing up I had gotten used to this kind of thing from my dad, but my wife had had it at this point. She was angry that he would try to make us change our plans last minute to accommodate him, and point blank refused to change the reservation, leaving my dad to sulk and complain that we weren't being respectful of him. At this point, we agreed that we would keep my parents at a distance and not try to ask them for any sort of help anymore. She also now refused to say hi to them whenever I called them and opted to just keep her distance.
Fast forward to about a week ago, I called my parents while I was home alone. At this point they had noticed that my wife was distant. My dad asked what was bothering us so we could talk it through. Before I could even get a full sentence out, he was already yelling: "oh my god you guys are still thinking about that? When will you let bygones be bygones? Okay fine, I'm the bad guy, are you happy now?" I have always just relented and apologized to appease my dad's feelings, but this time I became angry and pointedly stated that our needs should come first, especially during this period of time. In response, he said that we "never considered that maybe he wanted to feel the joy of buying stuff for his granddaughter", and "have I ever considered that maybe he's uncomfortable going to get hand-me-downs from someone he doesn't know." I told him I felt like what I asked for wasn't unreasonable, and even if it made him a little uncomfortable, would it be that hard to put aside his feelings to help his son. He said "well if you asked me to jump off a bridge, should I do that then?" This was the conversation that really stuck with me and ultimately put me in the headspace to want to make this post.
Now most recently, Mother's Day weekend came up, and my brother's college graduation in northern California was on the Saturday. It also happened to be a friend's wedding. Due to my work schedule, the baby, the wedding, and wanting to celebrate with my wife for her first Mother's Day, I felt it was best that I not travel and just celebrate with my brother at a later date. My brother and mom were understanding, but my dad made it a point to call me and try to convince me to blow off work and skip the wedding, and that "family always comes first." Funnily enough come Mother's Day, they never even tried to wish my wife a happy first Mother's Day. Instead when I FaceTimed them myself to wish my mom a happy Mother's Day, I could see my dad sulking again that my wife had declined to be present for the call. I don't think to this day he fully understands why we're so upset and still feels that we are the disrespectful ones.
Anyways, there's so much more I could say but this post is way too long as it is. I feel like I've thought myself into circles and now I'm not really sure what to think or how to feel anymore. I've been alternating between anger, sadness, and guilt that maybe I'm blowing things out of proportion. I guess I just wanted to put my feelings out there and see what other people thought. Thanks for reading!

Unknown Caterpillar in Strawberry
Found this guy in a carton of strawberries from Watsonville, California He’s not very big, maybe the length of a penny (don’t have a ruler sorry) I think his insides are red because he was feasting on a strawberry before I found him I’d like to keep him alive if I can, or at least know if it’s a good idea to put him outside (I’m in southern Alaska) I hope the pictures are clear enough. Thank you!

You could be swingin' on a star A House Divided Alternate Elections
The anti-Pact picture \"Casablanca\" helped to create public sympathy for the Grand Alliance and promoted war bonds through various scenes
Even though the American public voted for an interparty coalition of politicians who supported intervention in varying degrees (along with a noticeable minority of voters who opposed any and all intervention) and behind the scenes the federal government has been silently working for years to intervene in Europe and the Far East, the vast majority of the American public did not at all expect the outright declaration of war on Japan the 76th Congress managed to produce. As a result, there was opposition from the start to the war effort through strikes despite the partial success of President Hayes in preventing the miners' strike. Although the brutality and scale of the attack on San Diego succeeded in temporarily uniting the American people (indeed, along with most of the American continents joining to the Grand Alliance), the divisive elections of 1940 along with the stubborn opposition of the SWP to President Hughes in the constitutional crisis of 1941 led to fear among most Americans of defeat on the battlefield and civil war at home. Together with the speed of President Hughes' handling of the crisis (by ordering the return of all forces from North Africa to deal with the escalating domestic insurgency), Hollywood entered the picture.
The basis for the creation of the cinema was a variety of new technologies and inventions mainly through the ability to photograph and record images and sound. In the United States, in 1893, the inventor Thomas Edison together with his assistant William Kennedy Dixon introduced the kinetoscope; A device through which films could be watched by inserting a coin and the viewing was done using a "peek box" - a rectangular box that contained the projection mechanism, when the viewer saw the film through a glass lens at the top of the device. Edison's shady conduct in his business and legal issues will also be the motive for the migration of those involved in the fields of cinema from the New York state to the Los Angeles area, and for the establishment of Hollywood (along with a favorable weather for shooting outdoor scenes most of the year).
During humble beginnings of the Post-Grant's New America when the film industry was still in its infancy, many immigrants, mainly Jews, found employment field as a result of not being accepted in other more established industries in the competition for the job market and therefore even though the pioneers of American cinema such as D.W. Griffith were American directors who for the most part represented a sentimental southern and traditional Grantist world view there were already those who opposed Integralist concepts like Charlie Chaplin. After the Great War, various filmmakers and actors such as Marlene Dietrich immigrated from Europe. They joined a long line of film actors born in the United States, most of whom flocked to Southern California from Western New York after the first talking motion pictures were shown there as the new industry slowly but gradually took on an image of glamor and investments from various tycoons.
A typical motion projector during the \"classic Hollywood\" era
In the period called the "classic era of Hollywood" or the "golden age" from approximately right before the start of the 1930s all the way to the start of America's involvement in World War II, different high-budget studios already competed in films with complex and long plots and produced westerns, "film noir" films, musicals, animated cartoons and biographical films. At that time, thousands of people were employed by the film studios - actors, producers, directors, writers, stuntmen, and technicians. The movie studios owned hundreds of movie theaters in different cities across the United States where their realized products were shown to the public, who was eager to pay the entrance fee. Thus by the beginning of the fifth decade of the 20th century, Americans had long since become accustomed to the culture of viewing news broadcasts about the state of the world through screenings at the local cinema before the start of the motion picture for which they had come for their leisure.
As soon as the Japanese bombing of California began, it seemed that the industry would collapse or at the very least shut down for a long period of time until it could be rebuilt in New York. However, President Hughes understood its potential and insisted that filming continue despite the situation in the state. He ensured that funds and federal technical equipment poured in (both directly and indirectly) with direct instructions for directors to begin the production of propaganda films to mobilize public opinion in support of the war. Nevertheless, prestigious film premieres were indeed often canceled, even though these films that were shot in California got distributed with haste all across America.
Therefore, Hollywood underwent another transformation and a new variety of films were created which hinted (and some of them did not hint at all but were in fact a blatant propaganda product) the importance of the fight against the Pact.
The history of collaboration between the US military and Hollywood was long-standing at this point. The first collaboration between the Army and Hollywood took place in 1923 in the Mitchel era (that was also a certain indirect tribute to the former president who was fond of the world of aeronautics) with the production of the film "Wings" that aimed to encourage recruitment to the Army Air Corp. The film, which was shot on a huge budget for its time dealt with a triangle involving two pilots and the girl they are in love with - a combination of the romantic and heroic genres without any criticism of the military and its actions. However, it paled in comparison to World War II and the sense of "what is at stake" by both the federal government and Hollywood. This period brought the cooperation to a new level. The military recruited Hollywood stars such as William Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, and Henry Fonda, and used them in propaganda films for the US military and the war effort. For this purpose, some of the most important Hollywood directors were also recruited - John Ford, Howard Hawks and Frank Capra. Capra particularly excelled: Between the years 1942 to 1946 he directed a series of eight propaganda masterstrokes called "Why We Fight" in which each episode presented in length the audience a different enemy combatant nation of America while actors went on tours of different fronts around the world to boost morale and present their film works to the soldiers.
With the end of the war, Hollywood tried to adapt to a brave new world, but the cessation of the flow of funds and equipment was something it was not ready for. Combined with the beginning of the television era, Hollywood had to reduce the number of its film production, although quite soon in the strong post war economy, tycoons even allowed directors to increase their quality of film production. As a result of the changes, the studios began to focus mainly on the production of entertainment content that the television medium could not provide to viewers – an even bigger and more spectacular show for the eyes. Although television broke the hegemony that the American film industry had in the American entertainment industry, as a result of the direct competition there were many changes that benefited the film industry. That was due to public opinion beginning to see cinema as a more serious artistic medium worthy of respect compared to home Television.

A Telepathic Override that Probably Saved My Life: Contact Network History Project
A Telepathic Override that Probably Saved My Life:
Joseph Burkes MD 2019
Telepathy: transmission of information from one person to another without using any of our known sensory channels or physical interaction.
A KIND OF “KNOWINGNESS”
During the early 1990s on two occasions while doing fieldwork with my CE-5 contact team in Southern California, I experienced the acquisition of information by no known sensory channel. I suddenly “knew” one might say “at the level of knowledge” important details about sightings that subsequently occurred “as predicted.”
Our contact network had been advised by the CSETI Director that such forms of communication could possibly take place during our investigations. Nonetheless, it was very surprising when this actually happened to me. It was experienced not as a kind of “bolt out of the blue” but rather as a gentle confident sort of “knowingness” about what was to later take place on the night of our investigation.
In advance of the actual sighting, I knew when, where in the sky and the number of craft that would appear. Being open to this sort of “guidance” can be very helpful. I know this is true because one night in June 2007 such telepathic guidance compelled my driver to pull off a dangerous road.
We were on a road like the one pictured above e
A “TELEPATHIC OVERRIDE” POSSIBLY SAVED OUR LIVES
In 2007, I was commuting 1400 miles round trip every two weeks between LA and the college town Arcata, where my wife was living. It is located near the Oregon border. I did two weeks “on” in the ER and then ten days “off” with her. The remainder of the time I was either driving or flying across the state. What a schlep it was! (To use a Jewish expression.) Janie Krieger (a pseudonym) was a volunteer contact worker that lived in San Jose. This was about halfway to LA, so I often stopped by to see her and other contact activists in the Bay Area. On one particular trip, Janie and I decided to drive up a road to see if we might find an appropriate location where we might be able to do fieldwork
In the mountains to the east of San Jose, there is a county park that is accessible on a very treacherous road. It is a narrow two-lane highway that is bordered on one side by a deep ravine and on the other side by a steep rock face. This county road goes up the mountain with many switchbacks and has practically no shoulder or pullouts to move safely off the road in case of emergency. It was near dusk, and her tiny VW Bug slowly went up the winding path. There was no traffic in either direction. As we climbed higher into the foothills, every fifty to a hundred yards, we encountered a sharp curve to the right. The hairpin turns afforded no visibility as to what was beyond the curve in the road.
It was getting dark. We drove at perhaps twenty-five miles per hour on the straight portions of the road and far slower on the curves. I started feeling very uneasy. I experienced a premonition of danger, but I couldn’t figure out why I felt that way. Usually, my spirits are high when doing contact work. Janie was an excellent driver, so I should not have been alarmed.
Suddenly she blurted out, “I just got the message that we have to pull off the road.” I agreed with her without asking why because I too was feeling a sense of danger but had received no clear message as she did. But what were we supposed to do? On one side of the road was a hundred-foot drop into the ravine. On the other side was the wall of the mountain with no pullouts or highway shoulder in sight. We didn’t want to turn around and abandon our search. So, she slowed the vehicle, and we kept going. Fortunately, on one of the straight portions of the road we found a narrow shoulder. If we parked with one side of the Bug almost touching the rock face, we were mostly off the road. I got out of the car from the driver’s side because she had parked flush against the hillside. We then pressed ourselves against the wall of rock and waited.
In less than two minutes, we suddenly heard the roar of car engines. Around the curve there suddenly appeared two muscular sedans with thick tires designed for racing. I was shocked. The young male drivers were actually drag racing neck to neck down the narrow mountain road and they were taking up both lanes!
On the side of a straightaway portion of the road, where we had barely been able to park, they whizzed by us at what looked like close to fifty miles per hour. After they flashed past us with inches to spare, both drivers simultaneously jammed on the brakes as they approached a curve down the road. They whipped around that sharp turn with brakes screeching and disappeared.
Janie and I looked at each other in disbelief. If she had not received the warning to get off the road immediately, we probably would have been killed. With the ravine on one side and the rock face on the other, there was no place for us to go. Her tiny VW Bug would have been crushed and likely flung into the ravine like a child’s toy.
The idea that contact activists are actively being protected is something that I had heard prior to this incident. The notion that I, like many contactees, might have had a lifelong relationship with so-called “ETs” is something that I wonder about. On two occasions before age 18, I narrowly escaped death in what could have been fatal motor vehicle accidents. Many people believe that angels are looking after them. Contact experiencers sometimes say the same about aliens. The telepathic override that Janie reportedly experienced is something that I cannot prove to skeptics. The fact that we were on a mission for the loose network of activists that I refer to as the “Contact Underground” when this event occurred, should give courage to fellow contact workers. Not only are we not alone in the universe, but sometimes we might even be protected!

J. Burkes MD: I regret that I don't have an easy answer to your question about why non-human intelligences might choose to intervene or not depending on the circumstances. The blog was written primarily for contact activists or contact experiencers in general. One individual that Preston Dennett and I wrote about in Chapter Six on UAP healings in "Beyond UFOs" is a very prominent UFO researcher and author who requested that we not reveal her name. She was reportedly healed from a disabling condition called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). She asked to be healed by the Grey aliens who were allegedly abducting her for decades. They reportedly did so one night when she was "taken" aboard an "ET craft." Following her remarkable sudden clearing of all symptoms from CFS, she subsequently asked them why they had afforded her the remarkable cure. The answer reportedly was "We heal our own!" One might conclude from this answer that because she had become a willing participant in the "alien" outreach effort, their successful treatment was transactional. She was helping them, so they helped her. This kind of relationship is rarely reported in the UFO subculture.

We were on a road like the one pictured above

Name Deleted: What’s the thinking behind why some people are “protected” through some form of intervention and others are left to experience tragedy?

For More Reports from the Contact Underground the following links are provided:
This report was first published in 1993 on my return from a CE5 investigation in the “Volcanic Zone” near the Mexico City. There our team witnessed multiple UFOs including a large triangular “craft” that signaled at us.

This Tree
This Tree
The screenshot of fb messages tells the gist of it. My (now since passed) grandpa grew up neain Riverside, California and had lots of adventures in the outdoors of California for the first three or four decades of his life. I was able to spend with him what would be Grandpa’s last week here, uninterrupted and able to ask him for as many stories as possible. One time, a friend of my Grandpas, Jack, who knew Ernie Pyle, made a wooden sign in his memory. My grandpa, great Uncle, and Jack went on a hiking/backpacking trip as they often did, and Jack chose a tree to honor his late friend Ernie by placing said sign on a tree in the Sequoia National Forest. Months/years later, my grandpa visited the area again, saw a park ranger and out of curiosity asked him if he knew where the “Ernie Pyle tree” was. To which the park ranger said, “Oh! It’s just over there, we just had the dedication ceremony last week!” Grandpa looked, and lo and behold, the National Park Service had made an official sign and had a ceremony. 😂 I secretly told myself I’d visit this tree after Grandpa died, and eventually told him of my plans to go see it. I think we both teared up through the smiles. Grandpa also told a story about Tharp’s Log, which I’ve included a picture of. He said he and Jack and my great Uncle went inside and actually spent the night in it once, before it was cordoned off. I found photos online of the inside and showed him, it was incredible to see his face light up in recognition and memory of when he was a young man. When asked where the Ernie Pyle tree was, he said it was in the same meadow as Tharp’s Log. I wasn’t able to get more information past that. I’ve deep dived into google and found these old newsletter articles, looked at Wikipedia articles about this grove, and maps of the meadow, to no avail. I’m hoping someone out there can help me definitively identify if the “Ernie Pyle tree” is still standing and if so, which one it is so I can hug the tree my Grandpa visited as a teen.

This was in Southern California. I felt the pain and did think much of it the next day I noticed something sticky coming out. It felt like I had stocked a lollipop and rubbed it all over. 1st picture is before and the second is 2 days after

2024.05.14 23:59 ziczac1 Was quoted $1500 to install a water softener system and a separate irrigation line

I was recently quoted $850 to install a water softener system by sending them a picture of the main line in the garage of the house. When I asked about the irrigation system in the side yard, they came out to do an on-site inspection and said they would need to tee off the main line before the ball valve and run a separate line across the garage and out to the side yard. This will cost another $650 on top of the $850. It's a standard-size garage and the guy said materials alone would cost him about $200. I was planning on purchasing a system from Amazon.
Does the quote of $1500 sound reasonable? This is in California
Edited to add location.

2024.05.14 23:20 No-kiwi-809 First time veggie grower

First time veggie grower
First time trying to grow veggies. I’ve made quite a few mistakes already with getting a bit too ambitious with the spacing and learning what the proper watering routine/pruning techniques should be (I straight up Edward scissorhands-ed the poor Roma Tomato plants.. whoops). Feel free to point out mistakes you might see in this picture, I want to learn!
Question at hand though: I got a “self-watering” raised bed from Costco so I could do this indoors. After I transplanted the store-bought, already somewhat mature, California wonders and Roma Tomato plants. I filled the self watering reservoir AND gave them a good soaking through the top layer. Which has led to assume I’m festering root rot on my Roma tomatoes at least with the condition they appear to be in. The pepper plants don’t seem to mind as much, or maybe that’s just a result of me not pruning them as barbaric as I did the tomatoes.
Would adding earth worms into my raised bed solely for aeration aid help at all? Or is there anything I can proactively do to help try to save the tomato plants? Or should I cut my losses and get them out of there before they potentially spread and diseases/issues to the pepper plants? Idk if that’s even a legitimate risk but again, I’m a total novice.
The entire garden bed was filled with Foxfarm Happy Frog soil. I wanted to eliminate any potential negative variables out of my hands this first year, such as making my own soil. Still apparently couldn’t save me from myself with the watering and pruning though lmao.
Any advice is appreciated!

2024.05.14 22:23 TrickConcentrate3987 Selling 5% equity of 33.3% in million dollar house

In a sticky situation. My grandfather recently passed away, leaving his fully paid off home in Walnut Creek California, divided between myself (25year male), my older sister (29years) who is married and just had a son, and my mother, who is remarried and living in a different state. We each were left 33.33% equity.
On Redfin the estimate value of the property is about $950,000.
This past month.. I had saved the rent $ due to my landlord but lost it all. Long story short I gambled away this money online, and being faced with eviction, I decided to offer my sister 5% of my 33.33% equity in return for $2000 Zelle. ( I know ridiculous but it truly was the only viable option).
Before sending the $2000, my sister and her husband wanted to draft a document for us all to sign making it “official” that I was giving my 5% equity in return for $2000. But I needed to pay my rent to avoid eviction that same day, so my father came into the picture and sent me the $2000, with the promise of my sister sending him that money back straight to him. So really if I somehow came up with 2k and paid my dad back today, my sister has no right to be upset with me not gifting her 5% equity at such a LOW price. Not only is that equity worth much more than 2k, but I’d effectively be giving her and her husband full power over my mom & I with the majority % she would now have.
My questions: How much is 5% equity truly worth at this moment? And how much will it be worth down the road? Am I in the wrong to not sign the document when I gave them an offer and they accepted it? My sister when we spoke this morning was irritated I hadn’t signed the document yet, and was even insinuating how upset her and her husband would be if I didn’t proceed with our original verbal agreement. My father would not be happy if he didn’t receive the 2k as quickly as he thought but I’m fairly positive we could worth something out for me to repay him. My father has my back, I know this for a fact.
One last idea which I don’t hate, due to my current poor financial state, ( I have some credit card debt and student loans) Is to offer my sister 5.33 % for a significantly higher amount such as $6,000? This is still a steal of a deal for her.. but like I said I could really use the extra money.
Please refrain from comments about the gambling part of this story.. I know this is the critical mistake i made to land me in this situation.. but i have learned my lesson the hard way and will NOT go down that road again.

2024.05.14 21:54 emmy422947 things to buy that would remind me of SoCal/OC? (read desc)

Hi there! I’m a former OC resident (lived in Lake Forest) who unfortunately had to move away about two years ago. For a bit of context, I’m 18, and when I was 16, my parents chose to move to Tennessee and obviously I moved along with them. Although I don’t hate where I live now, I miss SoCal SO MUCH and I wish it was possible for me to move back. However, due to the cost of living and other obvious expenses, I know that moving back is not going to be possible anytime soon even though I am now an adult, and my parents have informed me that if I chose to go to college in California they would not pay for it.
I’m currently in the process of shopping for dorm decorations and supplies for this fall, and I was just wondering if any of you had suggestions for things I could get to remind me of my beloved former home! For example, I was thinking about getting a jasmine scented candle since jasmine is so prominent in OC, printing some of my favorite beach pictures from back when I lived there, and using seashells from my shell collection as decorations. I actually still have my California license plate too, it’s up on my wall in my room and I plan to take it to my dorm with me. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks so much☺️

2024.05.14 21:30 ayyymeg Private Room Available in 3 bed/1 bath

I’m urgently looking to sublet my room in a 3 bed 1 bath unit in Logan Square. Sublet would be from June 1 to July 31 with the ability to extend if you want to be on the next lease. Rent is $700/month and utilities come out to about $60-80 each depending on the season.
There’s plenty of street parking and laundry is available in the building. The washer is free but the dryer is $1.50. There are a few bus stops close by (#73, #72 and #82) and the California blue line stop is about a 20 minute walk.
The landlord lives upstairs and is very responsive and understanding!
The house is LGBTQ friendly. One roommate (they/them) late twenties, the other roommate (she/her) early thirties. There is already 1 cat living here, so they would consider one more cat on a case by case basis. No dogs please.
I’m happy to provide pictures of the space if you need them and I am available to set up meetups and/or tours.
The room will be unfurnished and doesn’t come with a closet. I have a large garment rack with a couple of drawers and a dresser that I could sell to you if you’re interested!
