2024.05.14 07:14 ScholarGrade Juniors - NOW is the time to start brainstorming essays

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:
I have a free introspection worksheet with over 100 questions like this designed to help you find ideas worth exploring in your essays. You can find it on the A2C Discord or download it directly here.

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:
  1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
  2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
  3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

2024.05.14 06:24 Dizzy_Instance8781 Burned out and smoldering....

I'm not exactly thrilled to confess this, and certainly not proud to say it, but I've hit burnout, and it hit back hard. I've reached a point where my reserves are spent; I have nothing left to offer. These days, I find myself merely occupying my desk, a shell of my usual self. The mental and emotional exhaustion has become so overwhelming that the simplest tasks feel Herculean. I can't muster the energy to hunt down even the most uninspiring worksheet, let alone stand by the copier making duplicates. And as for managing classroom discipline—getting them to put away their phones? Forget it. I endure the idle chatter and malaise.
Yet, amidst this fog of fatigue, I somehow manage to keep one part of my role alive: I still engage with my students. I make it a point to validate their feelings, their thoughts, and their efforts, even if my own spirit feels utterly depleted. It's this connection, however fragile, that I cling to—a reminder of why I stepped into this role, to begin with. I've slipped into a mode of pure survival, passive and disengaged in many ways, but still committed to nurturing their growth, just by being present in whatever capacity I can manage. At least, I hope...
I feel somewhat guilty. But it is what it is,,2-3 more weeks?!
Anyone else feel this way?
surely I can't be alone!

2024.05.14 05:34 rakesh_at_reddit The Importance of Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing uses sensory details to portray people, places, things, or experiences, making them come alive for the reader. It’s about more than just listing facts; it’s about weaving a tapestry of perception that immerses the reader in your world.
Key Techniques:
  1. Sensory Details: Incorporate sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and textures to enrich your narrative.
  2. Figurative Language: Use metaphors, similes, and personification to add depth and comparison.
  3. Precise Language: Choose specific, expressive words that convey your exact meaning.
  4. Emotional Connection: Evoke feelings and emotions through your description to connect with your audience.
Let’s put theory into practice! 🌟
Share your composed descriptions in the comments! This exercise is not just about observing, but about translating observation into an immersive narrative.

2024.05.14 02:57 mirta000 Monthly topic - Lucifer

Previous monthly topics included Astaroth/Astarte and Lilith. You can express which demon you would like to see in the next monthly topic here.
Lucifer is fairly well described in the Greeco-Roman section on the wiki, however he is a rather elusive entity that entered the Bible through confusion of capital versus lower letters and before that existed as a personification of a planet at specific time rather than a full blow God, making what Lucifer means to every single person to be a very wide matter.
So for this month I would like to ask you - what IS Lucifer to you? And what does he represent to you? How do you see him?
I've jumped around that question for a very long time in my personal practice and had to settle on "he IS the planet at the specific time and represents all that THAT symbolism represents", so light in darkness, illumination, hope. I have some unconfirmed UPG where that also translates to protection and mental healing. The symbolism of light is very powerful in itself, yet as a persona Lucifer wears a face that's almost not there, making him a very perplexing entity to work with. Not in a bad way, it just feels like every single time when I try to grasp him, said grasp escapes me as I'm trying to put to terms what is in itself not human, but more of a phenomena.

2024.05.14 02:25 willedsugar Does the Pandora's box story conflicts with other parts of greek mythology?

I've been getting a little into greek mythology again and something that has always confused me was the story of pandora's (jar) box.
It's said that before the box was opened, man didn't have to do agriculture, they didn't stress, and most importantly they did not die.
What confuses me here is that the story conflicts with other parts of the mythology. For example demeter, the goddess of agriculture... what did she do when man didn't have to do any agriculture? Some of the childeren of nyx, such as the personification of death "Thanatos", why did he exist when death wasn't a thing?
Is the story of pandora supposed to be some sort of legend in the Greek mythos? Or did certain gods only come into existence after the box was opened?
I hope my question makes sense, it's beeb puzzling me for a couple days now and I hope someone can put my question to ease.

2024.05.13 23:40 Objective_Speed497 I really like girly stuff and feel slightly confused but I doubt I’m trans or queer

Hello, I realise that there are a billion threads like these where the poster is very clearly suffering from gender dysphoria and isn’t self-aware but I really doubt it’s my case .
There’s two main things that make me confused. One is this famous thread by NightlingBug https://twitter.com/NightlingBug/status/1215716433210105856 on which I heavily feel almost all of the mentioned things , I suffer from a lot of issues with depression , self image , self grooming with clothes and looks , not being “normal” , immense social anxiety and hyper awareness and while I consider myself very liberal and accepting of all non cis people there’s still some stuff that irks me. The most damning thing in the thread besides the artistic part and how I don’t care to persue any of of my more non artistic passions that I loved , is the writing a female part thing and coming off as disingenuous. I found myself the other day while exploring how the characters progression of one of the female characters in my works would go feeling really excited for her. It was about embracing her sexuality and finally liberating herself from feeling shame and feeling like a sexy woman . Right after that I was doing research for a completely different character I wanted to write that was trans ( huge coincidence but I swear it’s not a cope ) so I could better understand the emotions and dysphoria and I was reading this thread about a person being confused and the commenter suggesting to try to see if they would enjoy imagine themselves as a female with female attributes. I remembered what had happened before when I was imagining and getting into the scenario of my previous character and I tried it myself for shits and giggles . It was both kinda easy to relax and imagine what it would feel like if it was me but there was no sexual excitement or really much of a deep personification with what I was doing but the excitement did send me into a slight panic and worry .
The second thing that puzzles me is maybe my love for hyper femenine things and women might be myself trying to come out. Even my family teases me about liking girly stuff even though most of my interests are traditionally masculine ; I’m into cars , fighter jets , buxom women , working out , extreme metal and generally really like the masculine image , even my sisters comment that I always have an extremely male gaze on things. But I’m also absolutely enamoured by girly stuff , I love flowers , i love sweet smells , I love women acting hyper feminine and kind , it’s hard to describe but anything associated with femininity leaves me in awe . While my brain is constantly telling me that I want all of these things in a woman I can love and not myself , I’m wondering if me being constantly this excited by it and thinking of it is maybe myself wanting it so much as my own or if it’s just to be treated gently like I treat others since I have huge self esteem issues .
I’ve read that a lot of people try to brush off their dysmorphia because they think it will go away so I tried to do the opposite. I read about the test where you look yourself in a mirror naked and see if you enjoy imagining yourself turning into a woman . At first I didn’t try to force it but even when I really tried it did nothing , if anything I was admiring my masculinity and muscles though I’m a bit grossed out about my body hair even if it’s not a lot compared to most men . I even tried to hide my penis and leave only my Pubic hair to make it look like a vagina and it didn’t really do anything except make me slightly excited (not sexually ) that I was looking at a “vagina” but completely not related to the excitement of it being mine or anything and I couldn’t identify with having a vagina .
I have some issues where I love my identity as a man but feel guilty about stuff like sex and aggression and I try focus on romance and benevolence so it might just be a hormonal and psychological thing .
I know that this is a deeply personal issue that only I can solve but if anyone here can give any input based on their experiences I would really appreciate it ( please no hate , I don’t have any bad intent with this post and I realise that the formatting and writing of this post is really dog shit but I’m very sleep deprived right now )

2024.05.13 23:24 Grouchy_Carpenter489 Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP: It is time to forget about standard Excel sheets and take an enhanced data upload tool

Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP: It is time to forget about standard Excel sheets and take an enhanced data upload tool
A Time to Forget About Ordinary Excel Sheets and Take an Enhanced Data Upload Tool
Thousands of users worldwide of Oracle Fusion ERP use ADFdi and FBDI for data loading or data management generally. Excel has some great features that help to streamline data analysis. There is no argument that Excel is a highly functional tool for organizational data management.
Ordinary Microsoft Excel spreadsheets have many limitations regarding data loading to Oracle Fusion Cloud. Excel is great for simple ad hoc calculations, but it needs connectivity features to automate and document its contents, making its use prone to error.
Manually keying in data in Oracle Cloud from Excel worksheets or copy-pasting is a slow, time-consuming process that is bound to reduce employee productivity. Accuracy is also compromised, and inaccurate data can cost an organization millions in revenue. Excel needs more automation, so if you handle large volumes of data, there may be a better tool for you. Furthermore, data security is not assured since Excel does not have encryption features.
The standard Oracle tools (ADFdi and FBDI) are rigid in nature; the user cannot move columns around or even easily paste data from another sheet to ADFdi or FBDI. The error reporting and resolution cycle is too cumbersome and needs specialized technical knowledge.
Why do people still use Excel sheets for data management?
It’s cheaper
For a team that doesn't care about automation, why bother spending on something more costly if they can get away with something that stores data tables? Considering its limitations, is it worth it in the long-run cost?
Easy-to-use
Excel is easy to use. It is one of the basic Microsoft Office tools that most people learn to use in basic computer interactions. Because they are already familiar with it, most people find Excel easy to use and often prefer to do so than learn new about new tools.
Limited knowledge of what’s available
Some people are just stuck in their routines. They need help staying current on the newest software available on the market. If the leadership of a team or members does not take the initiative to look around and find out what the market has to offer, they will be stuck with Excel and its attendant costs when others are enjoying the benefits of more advanced tools.
Poor experience with some project management software
Choosing a data loading tool to suit your data loading needs is a task that should be taken seriously. Many data-loading teams that used Excel have been turned off by their previous experience with data-loading tools. Some tools are cumbersome and difficult to use, others are code intensive and not suitable for most end users, and some may need more features you are looking for. The poor experience is a result of poor customization.
Suppose you had a tool that allowed you to use the easy-to-use and familiar Excel worksheet while providing you with advanced specialized features for loading data into the cloud. Wouldn’t that be great?
How to make Excel work with advanced tools
Working with Excel in data loading does not have to be a slow and cumbersome process that does not ensure the accuracy or security of your data. You can harness the power of Excel and still enjoy using advanced data-loading tools. More4Apps and Simplified Loader are Excel-based data-loading to consider.
More4Apps
More4Apps is an Excel-based data-loading tool that allows businesses to integrate familiar Excel spreadsheets with Oracle EBS and Oracle Fusion. Its tools work within the familiar interface of Microsoft Excel, leveraging the many features of Excel to facilitate data loading.
Training is optional since Excel is the main interface, and end-users are familiar with it. Unlike ordinary Excel spreadsheets, which are limited in scalability, More4Apps empowers data owners to carry out mass data uploads and updates.
A plugin must be installed on a PC before you can use More4Apps. The IT Helpdesk needs to be involved in installing the plugin, so only specific PCs can be used.
More4Apps sends and receives data from the server hosted by More4Apps. Considering data security, allowing data transfers to a third-party server without ensuring the details are transferred is risky. Robust testing is required with every release of More4Apps update to ensure your data is transferred to a safe place. The IT Security department needs to get involved in verifying the third-party server and plugin.
Simplified Loader
~Simplified Loader~ is an Excel-based tool designed explicitly for uploading or downloading data to and from Oracle Fusion Cloud. The Simplified Loader template is easy to use. It includes a toolbar that contains operations specific to the template. The output of any operation is displayed in the Excel template's Load Status and Error Message fields.
Simplified Loader Excel files upload or download data from Oracle Fusion Cloud. Simplified Loader’s Excel templates are used either for mass data loads, for example, data migration, or everyday data loading activities in Oracle Cloud.
Simplified Loader ensures your data’s security by routing data from the Excel template directly to Oracle Cloud without a third-party server. The Simplified Loader template doesn’t need plugin installation and runs using Macros, similar to how other Oracle Cloud tools interact with Oracle.
Which template should you choose?
User convenience - Both More4Apps and Simplified Loader provide features that enhance user experience. Most UX features are similar in both products. Since they use Microsoft Excel, additional training is rarely necessary. More4Apps provides a form to input data that is not in the tabular format. Whereas the Simplified Loader provides a single unified sheet to enter data, the same sheet is used to invoke the list of values.
Both tools allow you to insert custom columns, hide or delete columns you don't need, and insert formulas you may need for data analysis. You can also analyze or validate data before uploading it.
Data Security - Oracle Fusion only allows interaction through APIs. Both More4Apps and Simplified Loader use APIs to interact with Oracle, so the security protocols are the same in both toolsets. More4Apps uses an external system to manage licenses. From the IT point of view, in a highly data-sensitive environment, the IT has to open additional ports to interact with the More4Apps servers to validate licenses.
In terms of data security, both toolsets have the same features.
License Management - This topic is considerably different in More4Apps and Simplified Loader. More4Apps restricts the number of times an administrator can update users licensed to use the Simplified Loader template, whereas, in Simplified Loader, the Administrator has full control over maintaining the users licensed to use the Simplified Loader templates.
Support—Both organizations offer excellent support to users who log defects using the support system. Simplified Loader has a vast library of short videos demonstrating product features and functionalities. More4Apps has recently adopted the approach of video tutorials.
Plugin installation - This is a key difference between the two templates. The More4Apps template requires an additional plugin installed on the user's machine. The user will always see an additional toolbar in Excel when working on any Excel document. The user always has to use the PC where the plugin is installed. In comparison, the Simplified Loader Excel doesn’t need any plugin installation on the user’s machine. When the user opens the Simplified Loader file, the Simplified Loader toolbar appears. Users won’t see the additional toolbar when they open any other Excel file.
Using Excel parallelly: When using either toolset, Excel cannot be used for any other purposes. The user has to wait until the data is loaded to Oracle.
Pricing: Both toolsets offer per-user licensing. More4Apps offers licenses per user by module, whereas Simplified Loader offers licenses per user by Template. License management at the template level gives the administrator higher control to assign the right user to the right template, resulting in purchasing the right number of licenses per user. The More4Apps licenses are considerably higher (more than 5x) than the Simplified Loader licenses.
Conclusion
Using ordinary Excel spreadsheets for data loading may not be very effective. Excel may have shortcomings, but you can use it efficiently with advanced data-loading tools to get the best of both applications. Both More4Apps and Simplified Loader provide similar features for loading data in Oracle. Both are advanced data-loading tools that make your experience more pleasant and effective. Simplified Loader is more handy as it does not need plugin installation, and the user doesn’t need any involvement from IT to install the plug-in.

2024.05.13 22:59 Irish_The_Irish Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong

Is it just me or is Red Rising just one big personification of Murphy's law?
A secret needs to be kept at all costs? It gets out
A plan needs to succeed? It fails
Darrow needs someone alive? They die
It has been present since book 1 and has someone who has just finished book 4 less than 5 minutes ago it has just been getting more and prevalent as a theme as the Story goes on (or maybe it has always been there but has just become more noticeable as i become more familiar with the writing style), a prevalent theme that just makes the story so Predictable at times.
For example when *Spoilers* Darrow and the Howlers broke into Deepgrave for instance i knew straight away that the Oldest Rath brother would not be in his cell, i did not know where exactly he would be and what they would need to do to find him but i knew he would not be in his cell. And that is just one example of something that the books 4 are just riddled with.
I understand that in order for a story to exist and for excitement and suspense to be generated not everything needs to go as planned and there are tonnes of novels that do similar things but in other books at least things go right or as planned sometimes, in Red Rising it is just a constant, constant thing happening all the bloodydamn time, so much so that i am legitimately unsurprised by events happening in a book i am reading for the first time. I'm starting to think what Darrow has been fighting all this time is not the Society but Murphy's law.

[Death and Asteroids] The Republic of Prometheus: A light in the dark or an inferno
Some quick memes to give an idea of their culture and broader actions
From the flames of Prometheus rises Mankind forged anew
“Hear the sum of the whole matter in the compass of one brief word — every art possessed by man comes from Prometheus.”
The History of the Promethean Republic was one born out of tragedy as millions looked onwards into space in shuttles to the outerworlds of UN colonized space with the promise of new life and settlement freshly dripping from their ears. When they arrived they were betrayed by these honeyed words as enmasse they were enslaved and subjected to mutilation and augmentation on a scale never before seen. The cries of millions silenced by the chatters of trillions of others in the stars.
These betrayed were historians, mothers, fathers and scientists hoping to explore new frontiers only to be subjected to this by corrupt or rogue UN governors and industrialists looking to make a quick buck off of an “efficient” work force. They hoped to scrape away their free will and ability to rebel and leave only obedient and subservient “automatons” who while less physically capable than the cheaper robot would be more adaptive. Amongst those who betrayed them however was a man known as “Charon” who horrified at the deeds of his fellows set out to right what went wrong and bring the millions of people annihilated back.
He would succeed but not in his lifetime as the title was merely one passed on to others like him. The various Charons subtly sifted through code and memories to try and identify what little he could bring back. It took the Galactic civil war between the LIS and UN to give them the right time to act. And so the cyborgs arose unleashing a massacre not seen since the French Revolution upon their slave masters after decades of encountering others they would realize that humanity was unlike them having retained their flesh and minds while also unwilling to accept them back into the fold.
So emerged the Republic of Prometheus which would stand as the Cyborgs attempted to recover what they could of themselves and others. Some had awoken from their slavery to find their young children they took with them on their trip dead killed by their unrepentant slave drivers who saw little use or thrown into orphanages by the few with any semblance of a moral compass. Many tears were shed as children fled from their mangled parents and their steel husks as they said a rambling name that sounded semi-intelligible for their own. Prometheans disgraced and horrified vowed to stay in isolation in the hopes that maybe their children would have been better off without them.
A myth of the “Republic of the Dead” emerged as the centuries went on of a region of space where the dead still walked.
The prometheans eventually began to rebuild themselves and forge a new society one built around some semblance of patriotism and liberty. Eventually they developed from their faulty memories and eventually their own capabilities means of communication amongst each other via cybernetics with that the need for election dissipated as referendums took their place. The Prometheians could be regarded as of now as either the first cyber-democracy or perhaps a democratic technocracy.
This would not dissipate as they founded their state religion, the cult of Libertas. By this point Charon and Prometheus had merged in their minds as one being with Prometheus developing into god in their eyes as the one who struck down betrayers and uphold oaths. By this point of course Charon had long perished having left to his home planet after the insurrection. Prometheus is a loving albeit harsh father who intends to force humanity to advance as one and despises “parasites” who prey on the week and advance only for themselves.
He did leave them three principles: -The Principle of Spartacus(Unity), which was to uphold and embrace all members into their community in exchange for fully loyalty. It has also been interpreted as communal openness or universal brotherhood. -The Principle of Brown(Liberation), to end injustice wherever it may be and to liberate the people. It has also been interpreted as loyalty to god’s equality. -The Principle of Prometheus(Knowledge), the easiest to understand is to actively study the world both scientific, historical and cultural as well as to disseminate it beyond.
While on paper positive the cult has by this point expanded to mandate cybernetics, worship of the three principles and universal mandatory service as well as a notoriously loose code of ethics. Notably including hiding information regarding medical research from participants till after the study has occurred, coercion via pay and even including prisoner coercion. When questioned they would merely state the individual has no free will as no man has accomplished anything by themselves with deviations from community norms often shunned. There is also the issue of the void whom many have started to regard as the personification of Prometheus to be freed while others denounce it as the being that had brought this corruption to the world and must remain imprisoned as per its punishment.
It is not without its progress as work on stem cells previously slowed by regulation and cybernetics have exploded leading to a population regarded by many as technically immortal and without pain. Food is surprisingly abundant thanks to advances in Hydroponics and lower demand thanks to how far some augmented have went.
The army is entirely adhoc largely composed of self-funded and organized militia charged with rooting out slavery, banditry and hostile forces at home. They would often engage in expeditions with state approval to liberate planets dominated by slavers and leave after transitioning power to the oppressed albeit often with a hefty booty of loot. These newly liberated planets deemed to be in the Promethean security network would find themselves guaranteed by the Republic and offered annexation at a later date pending referendum. However in case of invasion or an offensive war the state bureaucracy following a referendum authorizing it would select a Supreme Commander who would then select his subordinates who would then assume control of the various militias.
Politically the dominant faction is the isolationists but two increasingly vocal interventionist factions have emerged: The Blues and Greens. Blues support a diplomatic approach gradually uniting the various planets underneath a cybernetic democracy and supplying technology as well as economic aid to develop them and build goodwill. Greens view humanity has squandered their inheritance and that their “elders” must take charge to guide them back to glory at all cost.
Glory to Prometheus, Spartacus and Brown!

2024.05.13 22:28 SuperSathanas What do you think of Theo Von?

Personally, I like his kind of comedy most of the time, and I feel like I understand it the way he means for it to be understood. His style of humor matches mine pretty well, in that I usually just follow "faulty logic" based on absurdities. I've always liked playing around with stereotypes and making jokes about them, with the humor relying on the understanding that the stereotype I'm playing around with is absurd, not that I'm validating stereotypes and then making fun of the people being stereotyped. It's like "this is the kind of dumb conclusions you can arrive at if we start from the stereotype, assume that we accept it's true and then allow for absurdities". Like all those fucking white people causing global warming with their NASCAR, reliance on Chinese factories pumping out cheap and disposable NFL merchandise, sending their food back at restaurants and breathing. White people breathe is the leading cause of humidity.
So, he's up there on stage basically just shit talking everyone, using the well known stereotypes and then just seemingly making shit up about races, ethnicities, disorders and everything else all for the purpose of just being able to ramble on about things that have no basis in reality, and I love it. I actually went to go see him live with my wife and one of her friends last month, and it was good time.
It seemed like almost half of his show was centered around a fictional special ed class that he was in, or how he used to work with autistic people (which apparently we love wrestling). He had these "personifications" of downs syndrome and "up" syndrome that he acted out with like exaggerated power stances, looking down at the floor and up toward the sky respectively. At one point he talks about how his special ed class got a Mexican kid, and the reason he was in there was because he was Mexican and no one in his town had ever seen a Mexican before. There's no way I could see any sane person taking these jokes seriously or thinking that there's any "truth" to what he's saying. Does he think being Mexican is pretty much the same as being autistic or having down syndrome? Of course not, but the comparison is funny.
He just makes up random characters who all just happened to live in his town, and just goes rambling on about random, absurd bullshit about them, and it's funny because the logic of it all is internally consistent after you get passed the fact that the premise is purposefully nonsensical, and the premise is usually that the he and the people around him are all kind of fucked up and don't do normal things. One of the funniest things I've ever heard was his story about a guy masturbating at trains at the Amtrak station, and people would throw dimes at him and feed him peach slices through a chain link fence. That's fucking funny.
My wife likes him, but is also convinced that he's really just super dumb, doesn't really know what he's doing and just so happens to be accidentally funny. No. He knows what he's doing, and he knows that the way he reasons his way to conclusions with absurdity is funny. I feel like we're on the same wavelength as far as sense of humor goes.
Anyone else a fan of him or his style of comedy?

2024.05.13 20:49 Active_Perception675 Move folder using VBA

Dear Forum
I want to move a folder from one directory to another directory using VBA. I have found the below vba code and it works like a dream however I would like to move the folder and not make a copy. I think i in some way need to use the Kill function, but i am not able mo make it work.
Code:
Public Sub CopyFoldersToNewMonth()
Dim Folder As Object
Dim SourcePath As String
Dim SourceFullPath As String
Dim TargetPath As String
Dim TargetFullPath As String
Dim Worksheet As Worksheet
Dim CopyList() As Variant
Dim Item As Variant

' Set Worksheet reference to quality of our Ranges
Set Worksheet = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Move")

' These two lines grab the folder paths from the same cells as your example
SourcePath = Worksheet.Range("B7").Value2
TargetPath = Worksheet.Range("B8").Value2
Set Folder = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
' This puts the list of folders you want to copy into a one-dimensional array
CopyList = Application.Transpose(Worksheet.Range("G7:G11").Value2)
For Each Item In CopyList
SourceFullPath = SourcePath & "\" & Item
If Folder.FolderExists(SourceFullPath) Then
TargetFullPath = TargetPath & "\" & Item
Folder.CopyFolder SourceFullPath, TargetFullPath
End If
Next Item
End Sub

2024.05.13 17:30 pentacontagon What do you think of this as a CARS resource?

Okay this is probably really dumb, because this isn't an MCAT resource; my excuse for asking this is because I didn't really start studying MCAT at all yet.
Although this site has a lot of questions I feel that CARS won't ask (eg. where is personification), I feel like those are blatantly obvious and skippable. Would some questions still be good for practice (eg. Who is the author most likely intending to write this to?)?
A lot of you are complaining that practice exams for CARS are all so different and make very loose ties to the text. I feel like that's not the case here? That's why I'm putting this as question and not resource.

2024.05.13 15:53 benkeiuk Excel Mac / Slicer greyed out unless Pivot is on the same worksheet as the original data

Hello, just a quick question regarding using the slicer on a Pivot table that's been created on a new sheet.
The option to use the slicer is greyed out and unlike the PC version, there's no option to link the data when you make the pivot table. (sorry, I forgot the exact function name)
It's not always practical having your pivot on the same worksheet as the original data but with the option for slicers greyed out if I try to create it that way, the whole functionality of pivots is reduced.
What's the work around here?
Thanks in advance

2024.05.13 15:34 Avotado-Coast Two weeks in. Honeymoon period and side effects are mostly gone. Now all I have is slightly elevated energy. (150XL)

First week was great. I had so much energy, didn't feel depressed at all, and felt happy and present for the first time in a decade.
That wore off and turned into some awful insomnia for the next week. I was only getting like 3-4 hours of sleep a night and my caffeine tolerance went to nothing. I stopped drinking caffeine and tried to wait out the side effects.
Two weeks in now, both the honeymoon and the insomnia are gone. Some of the depression is back, although I feel like I have enough energy to actually do something about it now. The drug has taken the roughest edge off the depression and made me more aware of what I was doing that was contributing to it and the negative mindset I'd developed with depression that I need to unlearn. So now I am trying to make some serious lifestyle changes, work on being more present, and doing some CBT exercises to unlearn the negative mindset.
It's difficult because depression causes you to let a lot of negative things into your life that you suddenly realize are very bad for you, but it also causes you to judge the good things as bad too. Doing the work to distinguish what's bad for you and needs to be discarded versus what's fine but you were viewing it incorrectly is challenging and probably why they suggest therapy in combination with drugs. I'm not in therapy at the moment because it's very expensive so I'm trying to just do this with journaling and careful reflection and some CBT worksheets.
So, overall, I feel like the drug has helped me have more energy but it's not going to be the only thing that saves me and I still have to put in the work.
