Swans Deep Dive, Vol. 6: Greed (1986) + UPDATE

SUMMARY:

  • Rating: 6.5/10
  • Favorites: “Fool”, “Greed”, “Heaven”
  • Least Favorite: “Money Is Flesh”

UPDATE:

Alright, this review has a bit of context that I thought I might as well share, so I’m making this its own section so you can skip to the REVIEW portion right away if you just want my thoughts on the music itself. Without further ado, it’s time for me to share a couple of secrets! First things first, it’s been almost three weeks since my last review. How the hell do these delays keep happening, you may ask? For the most part, I don’t know, but I actually have a good reason this time. Unfortunately, that reason was the death of my grandmother (an incredible person, by the way). I don’t mean to share too much, but I hope this makes it understandable that my consistency with these review posts has plummeted yet again. Between the academic difficulty that tanked my original plan of having this discography done before the Swans concert I attended on May 11, as well as my inexplicable failure to continue my listening / reviewing in a consistent manner once the summer began, and now THIS, I was starting to think that this Deep Dive was cursed. To add insult to injury, I think I just straight-up stopped enjoying this experience a while ago. Not since February have I posted a review of a Swans release that was actually my first reaction; everything since has been relistens, and will still be for the next few. This isn’t bad in and of itself, but with the added pressure from myself to review every release, it’s often made this whole process feel tedious or even frustrating (which subconsciously effects my enjoyment of the albums). Up until recently, I was honestly thinking of abandoning this whole enterprise. Thankfully, though, I think that I’ve finally been revitalized! I attempted a relisten and review of Greed last night, but found myself ambivalent to the music and dreading the prospect of writing and posting about it. But tonight, I gave it one more shot in a new context, and my outlook completely changed. I’ll discuss the content of the actual album momentarily, but long story short, I finally switched my mindset from one of analysis and obligation to one of immersion and openness. I wish I hadn’t already posted my previous reviews, because I realize now that I was approaching things wrong and being too harsh (especially on Cop), but I’ll make up for it by giving updated scores and a brief updated opinion for each album when I post my ranking at the end of this Deep Dive. Anyway… although I doubt anyone cares much, I wanted to apologize one last time for all the confusion and erraticism over these last few months, but I also want to sincerely thank you all for your interest and engagement so far. I’m really looking forward to continuing this musical journey! For now, – at long last – here are some thoughts on Greed.

REVIEW:

Greed is the grotesque congregation of a decrepit church. Brutalist drums boom throughout the rotting pews, shrill guitar rattles the grimey windows, and an uncanny choir reverberates across the crumbling stone walls. Michael Gira embodies everyone from the vile preacher and his crazed followers to the desperate sinners and vulnerable innocents held in the palm of their hands. Perhaps “Greed” is the deceitful sermon of a cultish priest, for example, or “Stupid Child” is the twisted plight of an abuse victim, or “Anything for You” is the confession of a despondent sex worker, etc. It took me an admittedly long time to genuinely engage with this album (as opposed to treating like it an item to check off of a list) but I think it clicked once I took a more cinematic and interpretative approach. That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy this album at all before my most recent relistens, though. In fact, there’s a plethora of things that make this an interesting entry in Swans’ discography. Although the Time Is Money (Bastard) single / EP – a cool release that was too minuscule to warrant a review – was the first actual appearance of Jarboe, this is the first full-length project where her presence makes an impact on the band’s sound. On earlier releases, it would’ve been unfathomable to hear the haunting piano of a song like “Fool”, but that new texture is integral to this stage of their sound and allows for very effective new avenues of songwriting. The aforementioned opener is honestly one of my favorite Swans tracks, almost entirely due to the gripping sonic claustrophobia that was only made possible in this new evolution of the band. Other songs like “Greed” stand out by facilitating an immersive ambiance around its disfigured instrumentation, while others still like “Stupid Child” are memorable for their frighteningly kinetic use of unique sounds. While these tracks cover a relatively wide aural range, – from the typical fare of rumbling bass and gnarled guitar to new additions like gated percussion and even blaring synths, – Greed is unified by a sense of space that was never allowed to seep into its brutalist predecessors… although the atmosphere isn’t any lighter for it. On that note, I must admit that the issue of monotony persisted in spite of my more engaging outlook on this record, with “Nobody” and “Anything for You” especially falling victim to the continually drudging pace. It’s not an enormous gripe, but it does prevent the album from rising too high within my rating system. The biggest singular problem this record has is probably its closing track, “Money Is Flesh”. I don’t have too much to say about it, and I’m sure the jarringly dated synths have already gotten some amount of ridicule, but I’ll never forgive this mediocre song for sabotaging “Heaven”’s rightful place as the album closer. The cultish lyrics are a haunting crystallization of the album’s themes, made all the more effective by its dirge-like pace, its guttural low end, its skin-crawling dissonance, and – most strikingly – the terrifying crescendo of Gira’s vocals. Regardless, I appreciate Greed a lot more now than I did before. It has its fair share of flaws, and is by no means the apex of Michael or Jarboe’s creativity, but it’s a pretty gratifying experience once you find the right mental context for it.

Reacting to random show #46! 02/03/2001 at the Canopy. Only the second example from 2001! Featuring Anchor Drops’s 3rd time played! It’s…something
Holy classics, Batman! Imagine waking up and seeing this setlist today. Hooo! They were loose too, the jams were far more spacious and less geared. I do prefer the way the try to “compose on the fly” nowadays. But this is a great trip back in time.
[Again] Discovered UM 20 years ago, decided to celebrate all year by listening to completely random shows, and I’ve been reacting as I listen. Hop in!

46

  • Only the second example so far from 2001. Let’s gooooo
  • Joel starts making some space computer noises on his synth. And then Pony locks into a nice groove, seems like we are heading into Kabump! He had such a different connection with Mirro than he does with Myers, it’s hard to quantify. Mike also gives us a lot more dynamics in his read of this song - huge mood shift between the A and B sections. After the main song ends, they slowly build a nice jam, punctuated every cycle by a huge chord out of Joel. Once everything cuts out, Stasik just slaps by himself for a little bit.
  • Then the band slowly comes back in. The Fuzz! Real light touch by Mike here. Real random end to the song.
  • During the break, Brendan says they’re going to bring up a couple people on horns because there’s some birthdays in the audience, and also that his college roommates are there. Seems like Stasik might also be excited that these guys are here. The song has got a great New Orleans vibe, it’s like Galactic! Joel takes the mic after they end, and introduces them as the horn section from a band called Fat Function.
  • Then Mirro starts a snappy little beat, very reminiscent of Jon Fishman. It’s Nothing Too Fancy! Bayliss takes a rip-roarin’ shift at the solo. The song opens up right after Jake’s turn. Really a lot of space, almost just like a soft trance. Now both guitarists get a case of the bends. Eventually, everyone is playing a frenetic sounding little bit, literally every instrument is like note note note. Bayliss and Joel slow it down to make it more coherent.
  • Segue directly into 2nd Self. Bayliss sounds so young here, I think he has really grown as a vocalist to this point. He has a great solo, and then things get WEIRD, I think Joel almost does a Halloween theme tease randomly. Now Jake is making it metal AF.
  • Sharp and immediate left turn into Mullet (Over) - interesting side note, the track name on the taped version just says “Mull It”, must have either been an earlier title or the taper’s interpretation.
  • During the break here, Brendan says that they have a new song. And that they’ve only played it this will be thrice.
  • Mirro starts up a little shuffle, and it becomes Anchor Drops. Little bit of a different accent in his infant version. Wow incredibly different turn after the first verse with some huge organ out of Joel. I was not expecting such a wildly different version. Some repeated lyrics here in the second verse, Brendan is not sounding good, to be frank. Things are in a completely different order too. Ends with some perk world work out of Farag.
  • Nachos! I don’t know that I’ve ever heard this song! It’s just such a rarity that I never bother to hope for it and really never sought it out. It’s got such a quaint early 2000s jamband “world” music flavor. Bayliss laying it down though. Really enjoying the turn it takes in the middle. A whole ass jam on Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca too! Is this always part of the middle of the song? Big cool down after. Bayliss takes a flaming solo that that resolves in such a satisfying way into almost like a Phishy open space. Speeds into a snappy little drumbeat for a minute, reminiscent of Rosanna…
  • But the tempo change was to lead us to Front Porch! A little guitar lead tradeoff after the first chorus. Joel goes off on piano soon after, and the rest of the band is quoting something familiar, can’t remember the name of it! Back to the verse. We land back into a Phishy realm after the last few rounds of the chorus, Mirro has a lot to do with it, absolutely saturating that ride cymbal. BB and Jake work to pull us away from that a little bit even though Joel is laying down laser noises still. Now Stasik is slapping, and now it’s back to being Phishy - oh there’s a lot of Moog all of a sudden. This is far out… Back to Front Porch yet again for some shimmering Bayliss shine! Slides into another great improv section. I love how loose this has been! Joel is all over them keys!
  • Because he was leading us obliquely into Mamu! Those were the days. Joel putting in another phenomenal shift. Joel is so good!
  • Ooo the song ends right where Space Funk Booty begins. Jake taking the space part seriously, sounds like he’s trying to out-Satch Surfing With the Alien!
  • They play a sample skit off of some rap record, then right into Africa! Didn’t know it was yacht o’clock already.
  • Sounds like we have fully shifted into a Grateful Dead style drum break. So funny how much more you can hear their influences when they were young.
  • Brendan says “Let’s give a big hand to Andy, Jake, and Mike.” So apparently Jake was on bongos too. Someone, I’m assuming Mike, could be Ryan, then says “We encourage nudity at all of our shows. So if you’d like to throw some lingerie at Farag he will gladly accept.”
  • Then some scary synthesizer noises for a minute or so but it’s actually Phil’s Farm! Immediately into another drum solo, this one more typical. Then into another atonal bog, then back to Phil’s under more Joel yumminess. Seriously he is on point this show! BB’s part is a mite quieter to begin with. Movements change rapidly here and then…
  • We are into Sweetness. This is such a lovely composition really. After the song is over it shifts into something less sweet and the guys kind of linger here until
  • Well You Needn’t. [looked up title on the setlist] I’m just assuming this is some jazz cover here based on how they’re playing. Joel, yet AGAIN! Now Pony - REALLY showing off here. BB says “If 2 wasn’t enough you get 3!” And yet another drum feature. Back to the main theme of this song. Right as the song ends Brendan says “Thank you!” And Jake chimes in: “Til next time brothas and sistas. Thank you!”
  • End set
  • Joel comes in after the encore break saying “We can play one more song on one condition. You all have to sign up for the mailing list.” And then just another classic round of Joel plugging the band, upcoming shows, you name it.
  • Der Bluten Kat! So busy the way Mike played it compared to Kris. After the classical portion, Farag takes a huge moment to wail. In the jam right after, Brendan does that trick where he sings right along with his lead lines. Lasts a while and then back into the third DBK round. Pony slapping his way out of this break. Very abruptly back into DBK. Both guitars soloing, it’s an absolute meltdown!! Bayliss telling the crowd they love them in the final breaks
  • Jake leaves the stage pleading people to “come again y’all”
Miss you Mirro! UMtil next time!

2024.06.07 18:02 FelicitySmoak_ Song Discussion Friday - "The Moment Is Me"

Song Discussion Friday -
"Josh Is A Liar." - Season 3, Episode 3
Sung by Heather
Heather got some major news in this episode: She’s finally graduating from community college. Heather, whose mantra since the show’s first season has been “I’m a student,” learns from the college’s bursar that she has taken every class the college has to offer (including men’s hockey, twice). That means her days of “I’m a student”-ing are over, sparking a major identity crisis.
“The Moment Is Me” is Heather’s inspirational ballad, injected with her trademark cynicism and apathy at the song’s treacly cliches.
She is arguably the show’s funniest character, but while her sarcastic worldview makes for lots of killer one-liners, it’s hard to stretch that across the premise of a whole song
It is Heather’s second solo after “Stuck in the Bathroom”.
The melody was reprised in "Nathaniel and I Are Just Friends!", and Heather's wedding scene in "I'm On My Own Path."
A live performance of this song was done in a concert special with David Hull (WhiJo) dancing

Lyrics:
What does the future hold?
What will tomorrow bring me? (Ugh!)
What story will be told?
What song is gonna sing me? (Jeez!)
This is my time to shine
Step outta the line
Throw open all the windows
Might be an uphill climb
But I just gotta find
What's at the end (please don't make me say this) of this rainbow?
'Cause the clock just keeps on ticking
It doesn't care that time goes by (what?)
The clock knows its destiny
So why don't I? (Ugh!)
'Cause today's tomorrow's yesterday
Can't let the future slip away
Can't wait to meet whoever I will be
'Cause I am the moment
The moment is me
Ugh, oh, I guess it's time for a story
There's an old woman in the park
She looks so wise, so regal
Was she ever lost in the dark?
Did she ever soar like an eagle?
It's just, like, so on the nose
Old woman, please tell me your tale
Did you succeed or did you fail?
Did you ever reach your destiny?
Wait, I am the woman
[Old Heather:] Please don't say it
[Heather:] The woman is me
[Heather & old Heather:] We are the moment
The moment is me

2024.06.07 12:03 AlltoowhaleOfficial The Role of Music in Emotional Healing and Connection

Music has long been recognized as a powerful force for emotional expression, healing, and connection. From the earliest human civilizations to the present day, music has played a central role in our cultural and social lives, providing a means of communication, storytelling, and emotional release.
In times of loneliness, grief, or emotional distress, music can be a particularly powerful tool for healing and connection. Whether through listening to a favorite song, playing an instrument, or singing with others, engaging with music can help us process difficult emotions, find comfort and solace, and feel less alone in our struggles.
we’ll explore the ways in which music can be used as a tool for emotional healing and connection, and share playlists and music therapy techniques that can help combat loneliness and improve mental health.

The Emotional Power of Music

Research has shown that music has a profound impact on our emotions, both in the moment and over time. Listening to music can activate the same brain regions involved in processing emotions, and can trigger the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which are associated with feelings of pleasure and well-being.
Music can also help us regulate our emotions and cope with difficult experiences. For example, listening to sad or melancholic music can actually help us process and release feelings of grief or sadness, while upbeat or energetic music can boost our mood and motivation.
In addition to its emotional effects, music can also promote social bonding and connection. Singing or playing music with others can create a sense of shared experience and emotional attunement, and can help us feel more connected and less alone.
Some specific ways in which music can promote emotional healing and connection include:
  1. Providing a means of self-expression: Music can be a powerful tool for expressing emotions that may be difficult to put into words. Whether through writing lyrics, composing melodies, or simply listening to songs that resonate with our experiences, music can help us process and communicate our feelings in a meaningful way.
  2. Offering comfort and solace: In times of emotional distress or loneliness, music can provide a sense of comfort and companionship. Listening to familiar or beloved songs can evoke positive memories and emotions, and can help us feel less alone in our struggles.
  3. Facilitating social connection: Engaging with music in a social context, such as attending a concert or joining a choir, can provide opportunities for social interaction and connection. Sharing a love of music with others can create a sense of belonging and community, and can help combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.
  4. Promoting relaxation and stress relief: Certain types of music, such as classical or ambient music, can promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety. Listening to calming music before bed or during times of high stress can help regulate our nervous system and promote a sense of inner peace and tranquility.
By harnessing the emotional power of music, we can cultivate greater resilience, connection, and well-being in our lives.

Playlists for Emotional Healing and Connection

One simple way to incorporate music into your emotional self-care practice is to create playlists that reflect your mood, experiences, or intentions. Here are some ideas for playlists that can promote emotional healing and connection:
  1. “Comfort and Solace” playlist: Create a playlist of songs that bring you comfort and solace during times of emotional distress or loneliness. These might be songs that evoke positive memories, offer words of encouragement or understanding, or simply make you feel less alone.
  2. “Emotional Release” playlist: Create a playlist of songs that help you process and release difficult emotions, such as sadness, anger, or grief. These might be songs with lyrics that validate your experiences, or with melodies and rhythms that allow you to express and release pent-up emotions.
  3. “Connection and Community” playlist: Create a playlist of songs that celebrate connection, belonging, and community. These might be songs that evoke feelings of joy, unity, or shared experience, or that remind you of the people and places that make you feel most connected and supported.
  4. “Motivation and Empowerment” playlist: Create a playlist of songs that inspire and motivate you, and that help you feel more confident and empowered in the face of challenges. These might be songs with uplifting lyrics, energetic rhythms, or themes of perseverance and resilience.
By creating playlists that reflect your emotional needs and intentions, you can use music as a tool for self-care, healing, and connection.

Music Therapy Techniques for Loneliness and Mental Health

In addition to listening to music on your own, engaging with music in a therapeutic context can be a powerful tool for combating loneliness and improving mental health. Music therapy is a clinical practice that uses music interventions to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.
Some music therapy techniques that can be particularly helpful for addressing loneliness and promoting emotional well-being include:
  1. Songwriting and lyric analysis: Writing original songs or analyzing the lyrics of existing songs can be a powerful way to process emotions, express experiences, and find meaning and connection in difficult times. A music therapist can guide you through the process of songwriting or lyric analysis, and help you explore the emotional themes and messages in the music.
  2. Improvisation and musical dialogue: Engaging in musical improvisation or dialogue with a therapist or group can promote emotional expression, communication, and connection. By creating music together in the moment, without judgment or expectation, you can tap into your creativity and intuition, and build a sense of trust and attunement with others.
  3. Guided imagery and music: Combining music with guided imagery or visualization can be a powerful way to access and process emotions, memories, and experiences. A music therapist can guide you through a musical journey, using carefully selected music to evoke specific emotions or mental states, and help you explore and integrate your inner world.
  4. Drumming and rhythm-based interventions: Engaging in drumming or other rhythm-based activities can promote social bonding, emotional release, and a sense of community and connection. By synchronizing with others through rhythm and movement, you can experience a sense of unity and shared purpose, and feel less alone in your struggles.
By working with a qualified music therapist, you can explore these and other techniques for using music as a tool for emotional healing and connection.

Conclusion

Music is a powerful force for emotional expression, healing, and connection, with the ability to touch us deeply and transform our lives in meaningful ways. Whether through listening to a beloved song, creating a playlist that reflects our emotional needs, or engaging with music in a therapeutic context, music can be a valuable tool for combating loneliness and promoting mental health and well-being.
By harnessing the emotional power of music, we can process difficult emotions, find comfort and solace, and feel more connected to ourselves and others. We can use music to express our experiences, celebrate our resilience, and tap into our creativity and intuition.
Of course, music is not a panacea for all of life’s challenges, and it’s important to seek professional help and support when needed. However, by incorporating music into our self-care practices and seeking out opportunities for musical engagement and connection, we can cultivate greater emotional resilience, empathy, and joy in our lives.
So the next time you’re feeling lonely, overwhelmed, or in need of emotional support, consider turning to music as a source of healing and connection. Create a playlist that speaks to your heart, join a musical group or community, or explore the transformative power of music therapy. You may be surprised at the depth of emotional healing and connection that music can provide.
Remember, you are not alone in your struggles, and there are always tools and resources available to support your mental health and well-being. By embracing the power of music and other forms of creative expression, you can find new ways to navigate life’s challenges with grace, resilience, and hope.

2024.06.07 11:24 cpbradshaw Lil Baby - school me

As a UK Hip-Hop fan of 34 years, I've seen lots of different types of Rap, both in the UK and in the USA. Entertaining/Pop Rap, lyricism, story-telling, club bangers, mumble rap, political rap, and so on.
Whilst I've loved some, I've shied away from others. A notable example is K.Dot - I know he has wordplay and writing skills, but individually, his songs don't sound good to me - a combination of his vocals, and production perhaps, but this does not stop me from understanding what he's about and appreciating his craft.
Lil Baby - I literally don't see any redeeming aspects of his music. His wordplay and storytelling are trash. His lyricism is basic, at best, and the beats he often raps over are cookie cutter bullshit.
Can somebody please outline why Baby is such a big deal in the states and beyond?

2024.06.07 09:52 kingofstormandfire This the Top 6 singles of 1972 according to Billboard year-end list. Which one is your favourite?

Guess Todd's sub doesn't care for 1971 since it was the lowest voted poll of the ones so far. I get it. In the end, "It's Too Late" squeezed into first place ahead of "Maggie May".
Moving onto 1972
***
1) "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (Roberta Flack) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqW-eO3jTVU
The first of three-chart toppers by Roberta Flack, it was written by Ewan MacColl and was first recorded by MacColl’s wife Peggy Seeger in 1957. The song is a love ballad that expresses profound emotional connection and admiration. The lyrics describe the overwhelming feelings experienced when seeing a lover's face for the first time. Flack's version is characterised by its slow tempo and minimalistic arrangement, featuring piano and strings that highlight her soulful and tender vocal delivery. The song blends elements of folk, soul, jazz and pop music.
I dunno, might be a controversial opinion, but I find this song kinda boring and especially tiresome on repeated listen. It’s not a bad song and it’s well-performed but it’s not the type of music I wanna be listening to all the time. I much prefer her following No. 1 single which will appear next year’s poll.
2) “Alone Again (Naturally)” (Gilbert O’Sullivan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU3ubk8u7dA
The sole-chart topper by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan, this soft-rock/pop song deals with themes of loneliness, heartbreak, and existential despair. O’Sullivan reflects on being left alone after being abandoned by a lover and contemplates past and future sorrows, including family tragedies. The song features a simple yet effective arrangement with piano and orchestral backing. It’s considered one of the most melancholic songs to hit the top spot. Several songwriters such as Neil Sedaka and Neil Diamond have praised the song, with both remarking how remarkable a 21-year-old could write a song with such a complex lyric. In 1991, O'Sullivan sued rapper Biz Markie for using a sample of his song "Alone Again (Naturally)" without permission. The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that unauthorised sampling constituted copyright infringement. This decision significantly impacted the music industry, mandating that artists must obtain prior approval from original copyright holders for any samples used in their music to avoid legal action.
Love this song. Great lyrics. Great melody.
3) “American Pie” (Don McLean) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRpiBpDy7MQ.
The sole chart-topper by Don McLean, "American Pie" is one of the most famous and enduring songs in music history. The song was inspired by the plane crash on February 3, 1959, that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, which McLean refers to as "the day the music died”. The lyrics of "American Pie" reflect on the cultural and political changes in the United States from the 1950s to the early 1970s. McLean uses symbolic references to describe the evolution of rock and roll and the loss of innocence in American society. Its enigmatic lyrics have been the subject of much analysis and interpretation. The original version of the song is over eight minutes long, making it one of the longest songs to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Yeah, I have a feeling this is winning the poll. It’s either this song or what’s at #4. Love this song. It’s an undeniable classic. It’s amazing how enduring this song is despite the lyrics being very much about its era.
4) “Without You” (Harry Nilsson) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dnUv3DUP4E
The sole chart-topper by American artist Harry Nilsson, “Without You” was Nilsson’s cover of the 1970 song released by the British rock band Badfinger, written by members Pete Ham and Tom Evans (you wanna read a tragic story, read up on the history of Badfinger). The song expresses the deep sense of loss and heartbreak following the end of a significant romantic relationship. Nilsson's vocal performance is one of the key elements that made the song a hit. His voice transitions from soft and tender in the verses to powerful and emotional in the chorus. The arrangement features lush orchestration, including piano and strings, which complement Nilsson's vocal delivery. Mariah Carey also had a big worldwide hit with this song in 1994 and based her version off Nilsson’s version.
Wow, what an incredible version. Stunning vocal performance from Nilsson. Badfinger’s version is good, but compared to this, the original sounds like a demo.
5) “The Candy Man” (Sammy Davis Jr.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz1syhcU39U
This song, written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, was originally featured in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, sung by Aubrey Woods, who played the character Bill, the candy store owner. The song's lyrics celebrate a candy maker who creates wonderful and magical treats. Sammy Davis Jr.'s version features a lively, upbeat arrangement with a strong vocal performance. The production includes a full orchestra with prominent brass and string sections. Sammy Davis Jr. famously hated this song. Of the song, he said “It’s horrible. It’s a timmy-two-shoes, it’s white bread, cute-ums, there’s no romance. Blech!” After hastily recording it in two takes at a studio session, he also reportedly said, “This record is going straight into the toilet. Not just around the rim but into the bowl, and it may just pull my whole career down with it."
I love Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which I was shocked to discover actually bombed at the Box Office), and I enjoy this song in the movie when it’s performed in the beginning by the candy store owner. I know a lot of people think this version is lame, but I like it.
6) “I Gotcha” (Joe Tex) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDEZQxg2TSM
Peaking at No. 2 on the Hot 100, "I Gotcha" is a song written and performed by American soul singer Joe Tex. It became one of his most successful singles and is well-remembered for its energetic and catchy style. The song features a confrontational and assertive tone, with lyrics that describe a man catching his lover in a compromising situation and expressing his feelings of betrayal and anger. The song is marked by a driving rhythm section, punchy horns, and Tex's powerful vocal delivery. The energetic arrangement complements the song's assertive lyrics. "I Gotcha" is a blend of funk and soul, characterised by its rhythmic intensity and strong vocal performance.
I heard this song before because I browsed through the 1972 charts before, but I didn’t really remember it before and damn, this is a really cool song.
***
Rounding out the Top 10 is “Lean on Me” (Bill Withers) (No. 7), “Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me” (Mac Davis) (No. 8), “Brand New Key” (Melanie) (No. 9) and “Daddy Don’t Walk So Fast” (Wayne Newton (No. 10). Similar to 1971, a very interesting and eclectic Top 10. I like it a bit better.

2024.06.07 06:54 curlypasta22 all kpop fandoms are toxic but the focus is on ARMYs

I'm an ARMY. This is probably not unpopular but I need to get this off my chest and it needs to be discussed and I wanna know what you all think about this.
Every kpop fandoms are toxic, y'all gotta admit that. But everyone is always "armys are the MOST toxic". Is it because we're a big fandom? I wouldn't deny that there are a handful of ARMYs that are toxic but let's also differentiate the ones who are just simply clapping back, because y'all label them as toxic as well. I don't think they are, take it like, if someone insults your bestie (the one whom you would die for kind of bestie) won't you be fuming with anger and itch to come for them? Like insult them as well? It's simply giving back what was done to them.
An example, a blink posts an edited pic of any BTS members and captioning it with "ugly" even though everyone and their grandma knows that person isn't ugly, even the one who posted it, but for the sake of hating, they did that. And so here comes ARMYs, defending and doing the same thing, editing a pic of any BP member and saying "ugly" and even I know for a fact that, that member is beautiful as fuck, but for the sake of hating- the rest agrees with the person who posted the pic! And this shit happens ALL THE FUCKING TIME whether it is about looks, songs, lyrics whatever!
Every fandom is the same! So y'all can't really call ARMYs as the MOST toxic fandom ever.
I'm so sick of this! It's so childish and immature, can we all grow up and just enjoy what our favorite idol/group has given to us? I don't clapback or anything like that since I find it so draining, plus I LITERALLY HAVE NOTHING BAD TO SAY towards any group because, first- if they're not my cup of tea or if I simply do not like them I DO NOT FOLLOW THEM OR BE UPDATED WITH WHATEVER THEY DO, second- what did they do to me for me to be hating on them?
Don't do something that you don't want to be done to you.

2024.06.07 05:16 Low-Welcome-2854 Is my mom's boyfriend being inappropriate with me? I'm 19f

This has been on my mind recently and I don't know how to feel but I'll start from the beginning, my mom has never been a stable person, she's always all over the place and I can never know what to expect out of her, about 5 years ago she started dating this new man and in the beginning there were no bad signs. About 2 years ago I feel like something changed. This man is physically and mentally abusive to my mom and recently he "changed" so my mom thinks she has control over him when she definitely doesn't.
This is where I come in I guess he has never been straight up sexual with me but he has made comments about my body several times, he always sings my name randomly when he's bored (an example would be he's scrolling through his phone and sings my name out of completely no where) he does this a LOT, along with singing my name he also sings this song which he changes out the original lyrics and it translates to "(my name) is very pretty" and this also he does a lot and out of boredom. He NEVER does this to my mom or with my moms name EVER. So idk to me I think this is a little weird but I let it pass
One big thing happened a couple weeks ago and it was when my moms boyfriend got really drunk and everyone was downstairs and I was upstairs trying to put my little brother to sleep in his bed when I heard and saw my moms boyfriend walk into the room (he never walks into his room basically) and I was laying down on the bed and he started making small talk and next second he's basically leaning on top of me and his face started going towards my face (like he's going in for a kiss or something) and I turn to avoid it, he starts rubbing his beard on my face and then starts going down to my neck and then towards my chest/boobs area, that's when I finally unfrozen and pushed him off of me (I'm so sorry for describing it so bad but I don't know, I felt frozen and couldn't comprehend what was happening). After this happened he left and while I was trying to get myself together he came in again and basically did the same thing about a minute later and once again I pushed him off and when I knew it was safe I went to my room to try to get clothes to change into and he AGAIN when into the room I was in but this time was touching my cheeks and kissed the top of my head??
There was other times when he was drunk and straight up wanted to hold my hand and wouldn't let go or would touch my cheeks
Is this inappropriate??? I told this to my boyfriend and he thinks this is and I haven't told my mom because I genuinely don't know how she will react, I'm just scared and I feel so incredibly uncomfortable around him now
In his past relationship he has been accused of molesting his stepdaughter but it wasn't proven and my mom is VERY sure he didn't and literally defends him with her life basically.
I feel lost, I feel like if I tell my mom she'll say I am overreacting. I want to move out but cant yet but I at least want to know if this was bad and what I could/should do, do I tell my mom? Or do I keep quiet, protect myself, and try to move out as soon as possible

2024.06.07 04:39 MrPotHolder Midyear Ranking–My Top 10 hololive songs for 2024

I went on an intentional music session with hololive's 2024 music releases so far. 2024 only, their deep discography is quite daunting. I'm not a musician or a music nerd, I just like to yap about music that I like, even if I really have a limited music vocabulary as an ESL.
I tried a couple of times to dive into hololive songs but if anything they just fade into the background music after a short while. It's safe to say they're not my cup of my tea, the good amount of them. Konkon Beats, Howling, FACT, SHINKIRO, spiral tones, Last Frontier—these songs are my only favorites just in the JP side. I'm sure there are hidden gems in there that suits my taste but as i said hololive has quite a deep discography. So I may have to group them into per year or per artist releases.
But still, I decided to give them a chance this year. And to make it more fun for me I made a ranking.
One thing to note though is that I only listened to the songs, and did not watch any MVs. I don't want to cloud my judgment with visual spectacle but make no mistake, MVs undoubtedly add value to the whole music experience. I also checked everything, from Singles to Albums.

My Top 10 hololive songs for Mid-year 2024

  1. Meconopsis by Ninomae Ina'nis: this song will go to my all-time favorites. I'm just a sucker for good melody and good incorporation of strings.
  2. Dramatic XViltration by holoID 1st Gen: same reason above
  3. HELP!! by Kobo Kanaeru: this one goes to my all-time list, too.
  4. Tide by Mori Calliope x AI: underrated song. y'all are missing out with this one. The uplifting, anthemic chorus is surely the highlight of this song.
  5. Taut Hati by Moona Hoshinova: as I said, I'm a sucker for good melodies, no matter how simple it is. Also, I just found out in the credits that this song have a Live String scoring performed/recorded by Budapest Scoring string ensemble!
  6. Evil Eye Wink by Takane Lui: if you haven't listen to this, you're also missing out. Such a festive vibe being exuded. This will never fail to make you have the itch to dance. This song is a good example of a song thay really suits the singer's voice.
  7. Overkill by Mori Calliope: this was my favorite for 2024 until the 6 above appeared. Still a headbanging song!
  8. CHIMERA by Takanashi Kiara: this song has really good mixing. Everything is so clean and balance, even if I'm listening it with my cheap running earbuds (I have a better gear for music). It's hard to top the quality production of this one. As a consumer of kpop songs, I'll boldy say this is much better than 90% of current girl group songs.
  9. Secret Garden by holoJP 1st Gen: this song is fire! The mysterious and whimsical vibes of the instrumentals really gave justice to the title of the song.
  10. Say My Name by Nerissa Ravencroft: I enjoyed the song but it needs a little bit of oomph. The last chorus though is such a vocal flex with those adlibs.
Honorable mention Riazyuu★Bokumetu movement by Murasaki Shion: I love her voice. That's it. lol. Anyways, it's a cute song but the way she sang it in a playful way made the song memorable.
My main takeaways:

2024.06.07 04:17 EvilHoborg Ya’ll are just nostalgic

A short review for whom it may concern:
I don’t really get the negativity regarding the new album. Here’s my take, I think Yelawolf came up with a sound on Love Story, that he unfortunately never truly went back to. I think for the last few albums he was stuck on chasing that sound but never really came close. Mudmouth was great in it’s own way tho.
It seems that everyone was expecting War Story to finally scratch that Love Story itch given the Malay and WLPWR production, but it actually did the exact opposite. I feel like we finally got a new and fresh Yelawolf sound since like 2016. Kinda like TM Returns brought an era, this sounds like a similar turning point.
That being said, Michael Wayne side needs to grow on me a bit, but damn TM4ever is great. I think the whole war story idea would have worked better had it been a single album with lesser tracks, because the production is not that contrasting and some tracks just seem better fitting for the other side. (For example cars or ticket). But there are so many bangers, several songs had me smiling while I was listening.
Few notes: “Another Drink” chorus sounds like some 2011 Wiz Khalifa in the best way possible. Struggle takes the best feature award for his verse. “Barn Fire” and “Flashlight” go hard as fuck, “Bang Bang Bobby” is definitely in my rotation for the next few months. “Work” is top 3 songs, it just sounds like an ode to classic southern rap. “Ticket” is imo the most Love Story sounding song since Love Story and maybe the best on the album, the lyrics combined with the guitar and drums just hit deep, great fucking song. “Cars” had me grinning and bopping my head, “Talkin” should have been a single instead of Trailer In The Sky, and “New Me” seems like they fixed mixing in the loud part, or it just sounds better in the context of the album idk. Also “Cooking Cocaine” is probably the weirdest sounding Yelawolf song I’ve ever heard.
All in all, I get if the album gets hate from the fanbase that’s been following Yela for some time, I’ve been a hardcore fan for over eleven years now but maybe it’s time to move on with the expectations we have. This shit’s mature, artsy and different. But it’s not bad by any means. Yela’s growing, if you a fan you should grow too

2024.06.07 04:01 Confident-Evening-68 Bakersfield (CA) sound?

Been on the bus since the early 90s but I have gaps in my musicology knowledge.
How would you describe, to someone like me with not much context for it, the “Bakersfield sound?”
Example: the GOGD podcast this week (covering Pride of Cucamonga) makes reference to that song arguably marking the last of the Dead’s Bakersfield feel.
Does that refer to the picking-heavy, bluegrass-ish vibe, or to something else? Something lyrics-oriented?
Thanks!

2024.06.07 03:46 ChivvyMiguel Big City Greens Movie Music was funny

Oh my gosh, the movie was amazing, but the music, the music was golden. Not that it was anything near the best music I've ever heard, it was one of those things that just made you crack up on the first note. Take the Cricket and Bill duet for example, the best song in the entire movie. The lyrics... beautiful. The voices... unrivaled. It was just amazing.

2024.06.07 03:33 Comfortable-Tour4583 AITAH that I suggested to my friend and his band to play my lyrics at my ex's wedding?

Okey, this is going to be longer.
Quite a while ago, I was dating a certain girl, let's call her Snake (33 now)... it ended in disaster. Yes, I wasn't an ideal partner and I know exactly where I made mistakes. I was swamped with work and often didn't have time for her. My then ex (the girl I dated before her) lost her mom to cancer. She was left alone with her brother. I adored that whole family, and we broke up because she couldn't continue the relationship mentally, as she was depressed and needed time for herself. She (let's call her Lú) said we wouldn't get back together. I wanted to stand by her, but she refused. I respected that even though it hurt.
When her mom passed away, I was there for her and her then 14-year-old brother. By that time, I had no interest in building a new relationship with her, nor did she with me. I told Snake everything. I said I planned to stand by her. That she didn't have to be afraid and that she could fully trust me. I would never cheat on any partner. My dad did that throughout the whole marriage, and I hate infidelity from the bottom of my heart. Snake agreed and said she understood.
Work was pressing, I devoted myself to it, and I tried to dedicate time to Snake as well. It didn't always work out. I apologized to her deeply for that and promised her I would make it up to her. I was ready to change jobs that required less time. She supported me and said it was okay. That she understood. I believed her... and, oh, boy, was I wrong.
After a while, many people started avoiding me or communicating with me very strangely. I found out that Snake spread... untrue information about me, and to her defence, she also brought out some true things or distorted half-truths from our relationship. For example, once I was opening cucumbers with wet hands and my hand slipped, hitting her in the stomach. It was a terrible feeling for me. It was unintentional, but it felt like being a real jerk. Her version of the story, which spread among our acquaintances, was that I hit her. Nothing more. Nothing less. "He hit me."
At first, she spread it among the circle of common friends... whom I couldn't stand anyway. Then it started spreading among my friends, and they decided to confront me. After a very long conversation, things began to unfold.
Of course, I asked her about it, and she didn't deny it. I asked why she was doing this, and she said it was revenge because I was just a b*** who sleeps with my ex. It wasn't true. There was a huge argument, and she left. Snake then avoided me for two weeks and refused to communicate with me.
When we finally met again after some time, everything started to get back to normal. She apologized and said she had behaved like a c***. Everything was fine until I found out that she had started writing to Lú about how I was breaking up with Snake and that I still loved Lú. How she ruined our relationship. Lú was in a difficult situation, so I understand that when she received a text message (yes, back then, there were still SMS), in which I told Snake that I was ending it with her and returning to Lú, Lú reacted by telling me not to contact her and her brother anymore.
Fortunately, it didn't take long for me to find out everything. Snake's sister called me and told me that she was meeting an older man behind my back and spending whole nights with him. I was at rock bottom. I called her, and she didn't deny it. She said I would finally understand what I had lost when I lost her.
Skip to last events:
After years, she is preparing for her second wedding. The first marriage with the older Gentleman didn't last. The second one was looming. Originally, I wasn't even supposed to find out about it. We hadn't been in contact for years, not even with her circle of friends. I found out about it because of the stupid mistake she made.
She asked my friend, who has a band, to play at her wedding, saying they were on a tight budget and she would need it as a pro bono service. She was quite desperate, and he took pity on her. They will play at her wedding... (By the way, I found out about it today).
Well, here's an opportunity for my petty revenge...
I write lyrics, and occasionally I gift some of them to my friends. After the breakup, I wrote several breakup songs and songs where I filtered my anger. One of them could be translated as: "You will pay for my broken heart one day...."
And, oh yeah, she is going to pay.
Years ago, I gifted these lyrics to my friend and today asked him to play them at Snake's wedding. Since he's a bit of a little rascal (just like me), he agreed. He'll give her a fake setlist and during the rehearsal, he'll introduce songs that won't be played at the actual wedding... Oh boy.
I'm genuinely excited that Snake knows these are my lyrics. She heard them, knows I wrote them. She knows they exist, but I bet it wouldn't even occur to her that she'll hear them at the wedding. You can't even imagine how much I'm looking forward to the wedding video.
I don't want to defend myself, but from what I know, she hasn't changed at all and devastated her first husband and eventually cheated on him, just like she did to me. AITAH?

2024.06.07 02:56 GreekRootWord Worship the Lord your God in music

When you think of Christian music, you might think it’s bad or embarrassing, but truthfully, it’s worship of the Lord your God.
Lucifer was the Master Musician in Heaven, now he is worshiped through secular music, even if you say you listen to the beat, not the lyrics, it’s a form of worship for Satan.
Try going a week without secular music, see how your mood changes, and then start worshiping the Lord your God through Christian music of any kind. See what happens.
When you see, for example, a Protestant church playing song after song, why don’t you see they’re worshipping the Lord? Worship doesn’t have to be monotone, in fact, worship SHOULD light the fire in your spirit, you SHOULD feel passionate and joyful in your worship, after all, what do you think you’ll spend your time doing in Heaven? You’ll be worshipping the Most High, and it will be the greatest feeling ever.
Even the Seraphim in heaven spend their time singing praises to the Lord.

2024.06.07 02:32 an_ephemeral_life Songs for movie fans

Perhaps this question is better suited for a music subreddit, but here goes: what songs would a fan of movies love? Looking for songs that are love letters to films: whether it's about going to the movies, the thrill of a great film, the joy and pleasures of watching movies with friends and your loved ones, etc. Even using movies as a metaphor for your loved one, as the example I'll provide shows.
I don't mean soundtracks, I mean songs whose subject matter are the movies.
Here's a perfect example -- in fact, it's the only example I can think of: Benny Benassi featuring Gary Go, "Cinema." Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxI2g1I9s5Q
On the surface, the song is a love letter to the singer's favorite film, but of course he is comparing his muse/lover to a thrilling and unpredictable film. Here's an excerpt of the lyrics:
"I could watch you for a lifetime You're my favorite movie A thousand endings You mean everything to me I never know what's coming Forever fascinating Hope you don't stop running To me 'cause I'll always be waiting
You are my cinema, I could watch you forever Action-thriller, I could watch you forever You are my cinema, a Hollywood treasure Love you just the way you are My cinema, my cinema"
I don't even particularly care for this style of music, but the lyrics resonate with me and wouldn't even have noticed the song if not for the subject matter.
Anything other songs out there that are an ode to the joys of movies?

2024.06.07 02:08 StarriEyedMan Translations of musical lyrics into more information-dense languages?

Some languages are not very dense in terms of the information you can convey in a few syllables. However, there exist languages where information density is very high, often through modifying existing words with prefixes, suffixes, conjugation, and more.
For example, in Spanish, a verb like "to have" is translated to "tener." You can modify that word to "tengo," meaning "I have," or "Tenéis," meaning "you all have" in a casual sense (but only used in Spain). Some tenses- like some types of past tense- also modify the existing word.
In English, we have a present tense and past tense for all verbs, but to achieve future tense, you need to say "I will ___," or some variation there of. Some languages allow modification of verbs to say the same thing. Some tenses are only present in specific dialects of English, such as African American English with the verb "be," which allows you to describe someone's tendencies towards something in as few as three words (You could say a man has a job as "he be working," or Stephen King is an author by saying "he be writing books." Note that be isn't used to describe what someone is currently doing. When someone is at work, it isn't "he be working right now," instead being "he is working.").
Some conlangs (languages made for fun) show this to the extreme, like Ithkuil, with an example being the sentence "Tram-mļöi hhâsmařpţuktôx," which translates to "On the contrary, I think it may turn out that this rugged mountain range trails off at some point."
This idea of information density has me wondering about song translations, particularly in theatre. The ideas music lyrics convey are strongly limited by how much can be said in the given rhythm, while maintaining the rhyme scheme and following natural stress patterns. But if the language is more information-dense, the lyricist could, in theory, give much more information in the same number of syllables as another translation. This information may even free up space for new details to be added to characters.
Does anyone know of any musicals that have been translated into more information-dense languages? If so, what did the translating lyricists add in with the space they freed up, if anything?
