2024.05.14 15:36 Oddreaction3943 Tuesday, May 14, 2024 Non Real Time Meeting of OA

Welcome to this non-real time meeting of Overeaters Anonymous! I’m oddreaction3943 I’m a compulsive eater and your leader for this meeting. Will those who wish, please join me in the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Overeaters Anonymous is a Fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience, strength, and hope, are recovering from compulsive overeating. We welcome everyone who wants to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues or fees for members; we are self-supporting through our own contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations. OA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; we take no position on outside issues. Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors and to carry the message of recovery through the Twelve Steps of OA to those who still suffer.
Our Invitation to You
The Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous
Abstinence in Overeaters Anonymous is the action of refraining from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors while working towards or maintaining a healthy body weight. Spiritual, emotional, and physical recovery is the result of living the Overeaters Anonymous Twelve Step program.
The OA tools of recovery help us work the Steps and refrain from compulsive overeating. The nine tools are: a plan of eating, sponsorship, meetings, telephone, writing, literature, an action plan, anonymity, and service. For more information, read The Tools of Recovery OA page.
Sponsorship is one of our keys to success. Sponsors are OA members committed to abstinence and to living the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions to the best of their ability. Sponsors share their program up to the level of their experience and strengthen their recovery through this service to others. To find a sponsor, look for someone who has what you want and ask how he or she is achieving it. Will all abstinent sponsors please identify themselves in their post?
According to our Seventh Tradition, we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Our group number is 99038. Please use the group number when making your contribution. As our virtual group currently has no expenses please consider donating directly through this link to the OA World Service Office, who provides resources for OA groups all around the world to carry the message to other compulsive overeaters.
Suggested guidelines for sharing: As you share your experience and strength in OA, please also share your hope. Please confine your sharing to your experience with the disease of compulsive eating, the solution offered by OA, and your own recovery from the disease, rather than just the events of the day or week. When responding to other member’s posts, please focus on your personal experience rather than advice giving. If you are having difficulties, share how you use the program to deal with them. If you need to talk more about your difficulties and seek solutions, we suggest you speak to your sponsor and other members after the meeting.
This is a literature meeting. Today we are studying Book Book Page 12**
My friend suggested what then seemed a novel idea. He said, “Why don’t you choose your own conception of God?” That statement hit me hard. It melted the icy intellectual mountain in whose shadow I had lived and shivered many years. I stood in the sunlight at last.
Closing By following the Twelve Steps, attending meetings regularly, and using the OA Tools, we are changing our lives. You will find hope and encouragement in Overeaters Anonymous. To the newcomer, we suggest attending at least six different meetings to learn the many ways OA can help you. The opinions expressed here today are those of individual OA members and do not represent OA as a whole. Let us all reach out by private message to newcomers, returning members, and each other. Together we get better.

2024.05.14 15:28 Open_Platypus_849 Need help in making a huge decision

Hi all. Over the past few weeks, I have been grinding my brain to make a decision about where to go for grad school. I narrowed my choices to either Duke MEng in AI for Product Innovation or a school in Montreal (Udem) doing MS in CS. I know that Duke is a way more reputable school. The curriculum is amazing, and I am sure the people will be awesome too. The advertised salaries post-graduation is 118k (median), though I heard from current students that the program doesn’t really help you get a job. You just have to grind, which I am okay with. But is it worth getting in an 80k debt? Besides, I am an international student, meaning I have 90 days at most after graduation to find a job or I’ll have to leave the country. Udem on the other hand gave me a full ride. Living in Montreal is cheaper than the US. Montreal overall is more fun. However, the studies are not as exciting. The classes offered are quite theoretical like most schools and not that exciting to be honest. Another advantage of Montreal is graduating with a 2-year open work permit, which facilitates employment big time.
TLDR: Duke MEng in AI (80k debt) or an MS in CS at the Université de Montreal (full ride but less exciting curriculum)
I appreciate all perspectives.

2024.05.14 15:27 Dazzling-Location993 McGill CS vs. Carleton CS

I’ve accepted my offer for McGill CS, but am wondering if Carleton may be the better option. Carleton has co-op and McGill doesn’t, and I’ve heard co-op is quite important for computer science. Does McGill’s IP/IYS do anything or have any benefits? My dad keeps telling me that McGill is a more recognized university as a reason to go (he’s been working in universities for ~40 years), but I’ve heard that this doesn’t matter at the undergraduate level. I’d rather live in Montreal than Ottawa is that has any impact. Are the programs at either university better? What about the job market in Montreal/Ottawa? Any information is appreciated

2024.05.14 15:19 temur999 2K Gaming/Work PC

1. Is this a brand new build, or an upgrade to an existing build?
brand new pc
  1. Please list any existing parts or monitor(s) you have that you would like to re-use with this build. For upgrades, a PCPartPicker list of your full build is extremely helpful. Be as specific as you can be here, including links or exact model numbers of each component whenever possible.
i would only re-use my mouse from razor, the rest would be new
  1. What will this PC be used for? Examples include things like gaming, general/multimedia use, photo/video editing, coding, AI/ML, etc. Include specific games and applications you intend to run, and any particular performance goals you have, as each may have different specific hardware needs.
Primarily gaming and for work(Data analysis/scientist stuff) Games would be: League of Legends, EAFC, Fortnite, Valorant and maybe GTA6 for the future
and also watching soccer on it
  1. What country will you be purchasing in? If you are in the US, do you live near a Micro Center? For other countries, please check if your country is supported by PCPartPicker by using the country selector dropdown on the top right - if not, please provide some links to reliable local vendors you are comfortable ordering from.
Austria
  1. Do you need one or more monitors included in the budget? Please list how many and any size/resolution/refresh rate preferences if needed.
2 Monitors(min. 144hz, 24inch)
  1. What is your preferred and maximum budget range for this build, in local currency? Parts lists may sometimes have additional shipping costs. Please note whether prices in your country include sales tax or not, and adjust your budget accordingly. Typically VAT countries will have it included in the part list prices, whereas regular sales tax countries like the US and Canada will not.
max. 2000 euros
  1. Do you need WiFi, or do you have a wired ethernet connection available?
Wifi
  1. Do you have any specific size or noise requirements for the build?
nah, it just shouldnt be oversized and shouldnt be super loud. so a quite one would be nice
  1. Do you have any aesthetic preferences for color or lighting? Describe what you're looking for, or feel free to provide some links to examples that may help. Some people prefer an inobtrusive stealth build, while others may prefer a case full of rainbow RGB.
i like the colour blue and black, so smth with that :)
  1. Any other specific requests or requirements? Examples might include a specific minimum amount of storage, or a particular CPU socket for a future upgrade path, etc.
Not at all as long as it's able to game / stream / program

2024.05.14 15:16 squirrelbomb Friend struggling with private student loans. Any options?

Hello everyone! I have a younger friend who I've been trying to help out as he's struggling. He hates his job, it's a toxic work environment that his therapist has recommended he get out of, but he can't afford to leave it because his expenses are too high.
The chief problem he has private student loans to the tune of $46K with a whopping 12% interest rate. He was given (very bad) financial advice to get private loans and not federally backed loans by his family in his college days, before he understood anything about finance. We live in the midwest, so COL and incomes are both fairly low.
I've told him his options are likely bankruptcy or to keep suffering through the job until his loans are paid off, but I did tell him I'd post here in case there's programs or other options available.
Is there anything I'm missing? He doesn't have any appreciable assets to get a secured loan, and most of the options I've seen for student loans assume federally backed loans. Any ideas are appreciated.

2024.05.14 15:16 coyoteproshop Population decline

I can't tell you how often I hear people who I consider very intelligent spout the thoroughly disproven myth that the Earth's population is exploding, that we are all going to starve, run out of resources, etc... Before the internet, it was easy to buy into this narrative. However, even then, the idea of overpopulation always had a racist tinge to it. "Those" people are having too many children (meaning the global poor, mostly non-caucasian). The message was clear, if the poor keep having so many babies they'll outcompete and replace us (this is a common theme for bigoted assholes).
Even a cursory examination of the statistics would show that birth rates around the world were already falling even in the early 2000's: https://youtu.be/fTznEIZRkLg?si=l0Uxa62wNxov1jgM
It was hypothesized that as people grew more wealthy (and I don't mean rich, just as they accumulated enough capital to be somewhat free from the cycle of poverty), they began to have less children, because fewer would die during childhood and labor had shifted from heavy agricultural work to less physically demanding jobs. A more modern twist, posited that skyrocketing costs for childcare, housing and education have contributed to this trend.
However, more recent data seems to upend this hypothesis, as a global contraction of birthrate is becoming apparent, even in countries that have not reached the level of financial security where one would predict that people would start to have less children: https://www.healthdata.org/news-events/newsroom/news-releases/lancet-dramatic-declines-global-fertility-rates-set-transform
Now, when births per woman are below 2.2 (replacement), the population will begin to decline. For a country with below replacement births, this means that the tax base shrinks as the average age of a citizen of that country increases. This will necessitate increased spending on elder care even as the number of people available to tax decreases. If monetary insecurity is truly a root cause of population decline, then this will only exacerbate the problem.
It's also a problem for capitalism, which is couched in ever increasing consumption. If the number of people available to consume decreases, the economy contracts as well. This is going to wreak havoc on the retirement system of the US especially, since we were sold to financiers by our government, replacing pensions with retirement investments in the stock market. Even if we still had a pension system, the number of people paying into it would decrease, limiting payouts. This is why I have always assumed the following:
  1. Social Security will not be available when I retire.
  2. The government is going to renege on the promises made to us regarding our personal retirement accounts (e.g. the tax free status is likely to go away).
  3. The government may even take retirement funds from younger generations to pay for the boomers to retire thus continuing a recent trend of fucking over the young.
Seems like doom and gloom? Hardly. The fact that the linked article was posted in the Wall Street Journal implies to me that the people who are most worried about this change are our would be corporate overlords. After all, if working age people are scarce, it will be harder to treat them like commodities and pay them subsistence wages. This will directly impact the bonuses executives receive, decimating the private jet, yacht, gated community and vacation house markets.
I think population decline will be the best thing that ever happened to us for one main reason: It is the only thing that can break us out of this current, hollow, exploitative, fiercely individualistic culture that is cheapening our lives and destroying the planet. We are going to have to think long and hard about what it is that we actually want, what makes a life a good life and how we can live responsibly.
I always noticed that in Star Trek: TNG, when the crew would visit other worlds, they were always quite spartan (for cost reasons of course), and I thought this made total sense. These people had access to unlimited technology but used it to live simply and unobtrusively. This is what we need to do.
It's time to start planning how we are going to withdraw from the world and consolidate in smaller, better planned communities. This is going to mean letting some towns and even cities die, letting many simply return to nature, demolishing structures that could become unsafe and clearing out any waste that could contaminate the water or soil if left unattended.
It's also going to mean the end of infinite growth (at least until we get a foothold in space). Before the modern age, the rate of growth per year was something like 0.1%, often times there was no growth. THIS IS FINE! The captains of industry will bemoan the end of the world, but it will be the end of their world, not our World.
Of course, this contraction will also help in our fight with climate change (in the sense that less people consume fewer resources) but it might also make the more expensive options (large scale geoengineering) more difficult to fund. I'm also concerned that a contracting population will lose interest in space exploration and colonization which is, frankly, vital to our survival as a species in the long term.
So, I have mixed feeling about population decline, but for the most part, the future under decreasing consumption, contracting financial markets and fundamental societal reorganization sounds a hell of a lot better to me than a world of ever increasing consumption, corporate oligarchs with ever increasing control and resource wars on a scorching planet.
I'm hopeful we can arrive at the high tech low consumption society of my dreams, and judging by the failure of pro-natal programs, regardless of generosity, to boost birth rates, this transition now seems inevitable.

2024.05.14 15:15 sflesch Hear pump, newer Central air

Good day,
About 4 or 5 years ago we had central air installed partially through a weatherization program. Our furnace was probably about 20 years or so old, but but they did not feel it was necessary to replace at the time.
I'm curious if there is any way that is practical when the furnace does get replaced to do it with a heat pump without feeling like we wasted money on the central air.
We live in Western New York for what it's worth, so presumably we would need a cold weather heat pump?
Probably not necessary info, but there is an addition on the house, part of which gets the ductwork, but there's an office/spare room and mud room that both use electric baseboard. And we also have an HTP tankless water heater which has been the bane of my existence that was installed at the same time as the AC.

Living in rural area having a hard time
Was work-trading here through a workaway program and was just given until Saturday (shabbat) to move! Because she “doesn’t like having other people in her house and forgot that”…… i am human too and don’t deserve this level of discarding and disregard for my immediate well being. After i uproot my life and choosing to spend my time assisting someone else
Am nb and have had guns pulled on me in rest stop bathrooms etc- was a city kid homeless 1.5 years- moved into a studio in a rural “liberal “ majority goyish area and am beside myself while experiencing the insidious inhumanity of compounded bigotry. The worst is being assumed to be completely incompetent or otherwise lacking. Some people almost pity me it’s insane. . Wanted to trust this opportunity. I feel sick.
Wanted to think i did something wrong and it was my fault and be accountable to whatever it was….. but i asked snd she said it wad her first workaway and she bit off more than she could chew. But until sat? Wow…
She said that gay marriage and zionism were the two biggest components keeping everyone paying attn to clinate change and none of us should protest it’s selfish and “men are men women are women” in that convo..
I never want to think its bigotry but it is. Mizrahi and on T so hard to hide it. Grateful for this sub for existing in these moments snd beyond

2024.05.14 14:45 ILoveOasisTho Choice of where to live for new graduate student

Hi all, I'm an international student who will begin my graduate study at UMich Ann Arbor this fall. My program is two-year and now I'm trying to find where to live. I've just started learning things about AA so I do appreciate more details about various aspects in living there.
I'm not planning to own a car at this point, but I might get one in my second year. A spot that is 15 min drive from campus(say maybe museum of art) would also be cool. I hope to get a 1b1b, and my budget is under $1500(okay to go beyond but not too crazy). Other than these, my concerns are safety and hygiene.
I'm having my eyes on Homestead Commons since they offer about $1400 for 1b1b on 12-month contract. I would appreciate your thoughts on that, and any recommendations you have for me! Thank you everyone.

2024.05.14 14:41 The_ghost_of_spectre Dadaab Refugee Camp: A Challenge for Kenyan Security

The Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya has been plagued by numerous terrorist activities, primarily attributed to the presence of Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia. The camp, which hosts over 211,000 refugees, mostly from Somalia, has become an area of concern for terrorist activity. due to the lack of effective security measures and the presence of armed bandits and Islamist militias.
The escalation of attacks by Al-Shabaab has prompted UNHCR and its partners to significantly scale back their operations in the camps. The Kenyan authorities have imposed a curfew in the camps and have deployed more police, with reports of mass arrests and beatings of refugees during police sweeps for Al-Shabaab fighters.
The ability of Al-Shabaab to operate within the camps and in surrounding areas such as Garissa seems to confirm the fears of many Kenyans, who believe that Dadaab is being used as a base for militants. An opinion piece in one of Kenya's largest newspapers, The Daily Nation, compared Dadaab with the refugee camps set up in Goma in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide: Dadaab presents a huge threat to Kenyan security. Like Goma, the refugee camp is probably crawling with militia. What better way for Al-Shabaab to penetrate Kenya's borders than to become refugees within our borders? R. Warah, Dadaab Refugee Camp Poses a Huge Threat to Kenya's National Security, The Daily Nation, 23 October 2011.
The presence of armed bandits and Islamist militias, as well as periodic outbreaks of clan feuding, means that the threat of violence against humanitarian workers is very real. The UN mission in Dadaab operates under UN phase three security restrictions stipulating travel by convoy and with an armed police escort, no free movement of staff without armed guards in the camps, and a curfew for humanitarian workers, who have to be in a secure compound from 6 pm to 6 am.
The Kenyan government has accused refugees of being a security threat and Dadaab the operational base from which Al-Shabaab launches its attacks. However, human rights groups have termed the repatriation program as far from voluntary, accusing the Kenyan government of scapegoating refugees and failing to provide concrete evidence for its claims.
The Kenyan government faces a significant challenge in balancing its responsibility to protect its citizens with its humanitarian commitment to refugees. Dadaab has strained resources and created security concerns, particularly with the presence of Al-Shabaab. The government prioritizes the safety and security of all within its borders and views the repatriation of refugees as a key step towards achieving that goal.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the ongoing drought in the Horn of Africa, which has led to thousands of repatriated Somali refugees returning to Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp to seek relief. The Kenyan government's ban on the registration of new refugees has left these returnees without access to aid programs.
The Dadaab refugee camp has become a volatile situation due to the presence of Al-Shabaab and the lack of effective security measures. The camp has been plagued by numerous terrorist activities, and the Kenyan government's efforts to repatriate Somali refugees have been met with significant challenges and criticisms.

2024.05.14 14:37 Total-Mastodon-6888 Exploring Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot: Opportunities and Requirements

Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) offers exciting opportunities for skilled workers and international graduates to settle in the Atlantic provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Here’s a closer look at the program’s opportunities and requirements:

Streamlined Pathway to Permanent Residency:

The AIP provides a streamlined pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers and international graduates who have a valid job offer from a designated employer in one of the Atlantic provinces. It aims to address labor market needs and support regional economic development.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the AIP, applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria, including having a job offer from a designated employer in an eligible occupation, meeting language proficiency requirements (English or French), having sufficient funds to support themselves and their families, and obtaining a settlement plan approved by the province.

Designated Employers:

Employers in the Atlantic provinces participating in the AIP can hire skilled workers or international graduates to fill vacant positions that they have been unable to fill locally. Designated employers must meet certain criteria and undergo a verification process to participate in the program.

Occupational Categories:

The AIP covers a wide range of occupations, including but not limited to healthcare, information technology, finance, hospitality, and manufacturing. Applicants must have skills and experience relevant to the job offer and meet the requirements of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.

Language Proficiency:

Language proficiency in either English or French is a key requirement for the AIP. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency through approved language tests such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) for English, or TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) for French.

Settlement Plan:

As part of the application process, applicants must develop a settlement plan outlining their intentions for settling in the Atlantic province where they have a job offer. The settlement plan must be approved by the province and may include details such as housing, healthcare, education, and community integration.

Permanent Residency Application:

Once applicants have secured a job offer, met the eligibility criteria, and obtained a settlement plan approval, they can apply for permanent residency through the AIP. Successful applicants and their families can enjoy the benefits of living and working in Canada’s vibrant Atlantic region.

Conclusion:

Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot presents valuable opportunities for skilled workers and international graduates to pursue permanent residency and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of the Atlantic provinces. By meeting the program’s requirements and securing a job offer from a designated employer, applicants can embark on a rewarding journey to establish themselves in Canada’s eastern provinces. At Adric Immigration, we specialize in guiding individuals through the AIP application process, helping them navigate the requirements and maximize their chances of success.

2024.05.14 14:36 M4MMOTH-r UK apprentice issues

Hey, I'm in a real predicament and I genuinely feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Before I get into it here's some background, I'm 24, live in the UK, have a mortgage and live with my partner living of my sole income, this will be important later
So I come from a sales background of 5 years, primarily in tech, and due to the business I was part of, took for growth was slim so I needed a change of pace. During this time I did the math, saved up and managed to acquire a mortgage and move out of my parents home and be fully sufficient, after which I managed to find a well paying apprenticeship program (more than what I was on in sales, including bonus) and made it through and got the role, this was ~6 months ago
The apprenticeship is a fully remote role, in software development for a small but broadly known in the respected field company. When I applied for the role, I mentioned a strong knack for learning programming languages, and wanting to improve my knowledge and expand my portfolio, and based on the job listing, this was a perfect match for what they were after, and of course I got the role.
Fast forward to now, and the work we've been given has been more or less completely irrelevant to what my apprenticeship programme wants, we have assignments that require work to be done to guidelines within the workplace which I am unable to complete because I don't have evidence for doing these things within the workplace... Because we haven't.
Iv taken steps to try to amend this, iv spoken to my manager and the CEO about there words were "your not falling behind, don't think that" as if to say don't beat yourself up, your fine. When in reality I'm not. After this, I spoke to my contact at my apprenticeship programme and they said they would look into it. But honestly I'm in the headspace where, If I didn't have things to pay for, I'd leave and try again elsewhere
Overall I feel like I'm being let down by my employer for not giving me the tools, technical knowledge and techniques that were promised in the interview and job listing and currently sat, lost and stressed to pieces because it's out of my control
Any advice? Do I just wait and hope? Is there any legal processess I should look into?

2024.05.14 14:35 Aggravating_Meal7892 Career Crossroads

Hi there - hoping for some advice! I am 29 with a career in HR making 120k. When I was in college 10 years ago I was majoring in psychology but wasn’t able to complete my degree for a number of reasons I won’t get into. I’m in a very different place right now and recently found out I have a nice chunk of money from an inheritance that will pay for an undergraduate degree. I’d like to go back to school with the intent of finishing undergrad and then going into a graduate program. Here’s where I’m stuck:
Is my best option to maintain my current standard of living to pursue I-o psych (something that wouldn’t truly fulfill me) or can I reasonably expect a higher salary if I go for something specialized like a masters in forensic psych?

2024.05.14 14:30 Opening_Medicine8938 Not possible to get a job in 2024?

Hey guys, I graduated a bootcamp last year, and was able to get 3 months of a paid contract role on my resume. But I started looking for jobs again last month, and its been like 200-300 applications with no responses. I live in NYC so am open to onsite/hybrid/remote roles and its so competetive.
My first job search I think it took like 800 applications to get 3 remote interviews, one eventually being for the Aribnb apprentice program. Also real engineers in the field say my projects look really good and so does my resume.
