2024.05.14 13:12 ellie318 How do I start loving myself and avoid anxious attachment

Hi all, I (28F) ended a very toxic 2 year relationship 6 months ago, and I am realizing that I simply can not love myself and I have developed an anxious attachment style. My whole life at the moment revolves around if the guy that I started dating 2 months ago will text me, if he will want to see me, overthinking everything and I can even see him pulling away.
What do you recommend (book, podcast) to start feeling better, not dependent on dating, and overall loving myself. I wake up anxious everyday and feel constant anxiety.
Sorry in advance if i sound cocky but just for context i wanted to add that i look quite good physically (been asked to model etc) and have a very good career but those things dont seem to complete me
Any advice will be appreciated

2024.05.14 13:09 Allforthe2nd Where to park profits from a home sale for future use?

We are in the process of sellijng our house in a hot market. We PCS this summer and will be in base housing next duty station. We are expecting a significant amount of cash after the sale, as our home appreciated in value from when we bought.
Our goal is mostly preservation of capital; when we go to buy a home again in the next 3 to 7 years this money will make a good down payment or a potential nest egg if the housing bubble collapses and we use the VA loan.
No debt, max TSP as well as Roth IRAs for both my wife and me. We have 529s for the kids, emergency fund of 6 months, and I do put $100/month into FXAIX.
I would like to invest some of this more than via HYSA or CD. Any ideas? I am willing to take some risk on maybe 5 or 10% of this money but would like to keep the rest low risk.
Again, the goal is to not touch this money. No lifestyle creep, etc. Thanks for any ideas.

2024.05.14 13:09 AffectionatePilot183 local caucasian couple in early 30s looking for a place to rent

hi there me and my girlfriend are looking for a place to rent. either a bachelor suite or maybe a room with shared kitchen and bathroom. open to any possibilities our budget is 1400 dollars. we are both on welfare ill be up front about that. however we are not low life drug addicts we do not use drugs or party. its a tough housing market right now. im just posting on here to hopefully find some options. any response is appreciated.
would be happy to come introduce myself in person to see if you believe i would be a good fit. can get some references for you from previous landlords. Never late on the rent, the one positive is that my welfare that me and her are getting right now will never be late and this means our rent payments wont be late either.
both looking for work right now possibly going to go back to school myself. i have always worked in construction or as a commercial transport mechanic. doubt i will be out of work for very long.
Not expecting to have any guests over and we do not party or drink. if its a shared accomidation it will be no issue to do our part to keep everything clean. like i said 1400 is our budget and i think that is reasonable. Never have i missed paying my rent and if there is any short term rentals out there that are only available for a little while that is ok too. gives us a chance to get a place and keep looking for a place to move onto afterwards.
Appreciate you reading this. please message me your contact info on here or you can email [ross.drysdale2022@gmail.com](mailto:ross.drysdale2022@gmail.com) or text me at 6043435160

2024.05.14 13:09 inexperiencedaf What should I (29F) do, if anything, about my boyfriend's (30M) clingy younger brother (26M)?

I have only been with my boyfriend, "John," for eight months, but we have a strong relationship and I know he is the person I want to be with for a long time.
We have been talking seriously about moving in together since we hit the four-month mark, and John has said he'd like me to move in to the house he owns. He would be happy for me to move in tomorrow if I wanted, but I've told him I'm not ready. But there is one big reason I'm not ready.
John an engineer and has worked and saved hard his whole life to afford the modest two-bedroom he currently owns. When he bought it last year, he let his younger brother, "Tim", move in because he needed a place to stay.
And Tim was finding it hard to find a place that would take him and his dog, namely because his dog was pretty nuts. She barks constantly, is reactive and weird with strangers, and is destructive.
John, who was worried about Tim's mental health (all three of us have had struggles with depression) let Tim move in with him, and charged him about a third of the "going rent."
Now it's a year later. Tim and his dog still live in John's house, still paying the same amount of rent.
Tim is not a terrible roommate at all; he has bought a lot of furniture for the house and stuff for the garden, and does chores occasionally, and he's agreed to take turns cooking for one another once a week. He's friendly and fun to be around. But Tim's dog IS a terrible roommate, and she disrupts my and John's sleep regularly, as well as scratching up his house and his furniture.
Tim's presence is also affecting John's and my romantic life – and this again is something that is not Tim's fault, but his room is right next to Tim's, and one day he got drunk and told me he could hear "everything" when John and I were intimate. I told John this and it's made us feel really weird about having sex whenever Tim is in the next room. Tim is a homebody so he is pretty much always in his room or with us in the living space.
I have gently told John that while I would love to live with just him, I don't know whether I can live for long with him, Tim and Tim's dog in John's cosy house. But he is understandably worried about whether Tim will be able to find a place to rent that will take him and his, to be honest, pretty nuts dog. He's worried, too, about Tim's mental health.
He has said he will talk to his and Tim's parents to see what alternatives there might be, including their parents maybe taking Tim's dog off his hands so Tim will find it easier to find accommodation.
This is all fine, but in the meantime, I can see that some slight tension is arising between myself and Tim. John is very easy-going and sweet, but neither Tim nor I are as easy-going as him. I feel that Tim often shows an entitlement to John's house and generosity that is frustrating; for example, he has taken complete control of the garden, making his own decisions about what to plant and what trees to chop down without consulting John. He often asks John to walk and care for his dog, even though the dog is not John's.
He sometimes speaks and acts as if he and his dog will be living in John's house long-term, and has shown no inclination of moving out at any point.
The other day, Tim announced that he was rearranging all the furniture in the living room, and started ordering John around to help him move the heavier objects. John was going to help when I cut in: I think it looks quite nice how it is, maybe we could sleep on it? And then John agreed and said, yeah, he was happy with how it was.
I could see Tim was angry with me for butting in, and ever since then he has been a bit off and withdrawn with me.
I guess my first question is, who is in the right here? And the second question: what do I do next? Part of me wants to try to smooth things over and "make nice" with Tim, because we were quite good friends at first. But the other part of me thinks I should put some distance between myself and him because he seems quite insecure and immature, and I think this is an issue that is really between John and Tim for the time being.
John is a little passive and overly easy-going, but I know this is something he wants to work out as he wants me to move in, so I wonder if I should just leave him to it and be polite but distant with Tim for now.
Thanks for reading and all advice appreciated.
TL;DR: My amazing boyfriend's younger brother doesn't seem like he ever intends to move out of my boyfriend's house, but I don't want to move in if it means living with little brother and his dog. What next?

'Jonathan Bailey doesn’t like to bare it all. But vulnerability fueled his best performance yet' - Jonny interview with the LA Times

“This is where all the cruising happened.”
Jonathan Bailey and I are standing in Pershing Square on a bright, blustery spring afternoon, nearing the end of a homemade queer history tour of downtown L.A.: One Magazine, Cooper Do-Nuts/Nancy Valverde Square, the Dover bathhouse, the Biltmore Hotel and this, the city’s former Central Park, a haven, since before World War I, for “fairies” and “sissy boys,” servicemen on leave and beatniks on the road.
“Is it still happening now?” he asks.
“Probably not as much,” I venture.
“Well, you let me know if it’s happening,” he teases, a mischievous smile lighting up his face.
Bailey understands the uses of the charm offensive. As Sam, the handsome Lothario of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s delightful pre-”Fleabag” curio, “Crashing”; Anthony, the romantic hero of “Bridgerton’s” second season; and John, the jerk of a protagonist in Mike Bartlett’s love triangle play “Cock,” the English actor, 36, has swaggered up to the precipice of superstardom. With roles in such studio tentpoles as “Wicked” and “Jurassic World” on the horizon, he may just break through. Yet he delivers career-best work in Showtime’s queer melodrama “Fellow Travelers,” as anti-Communist crusader-turned-gay rights activist Tim Laughlin, by leaving behind the self-assured rakes and tapping a new wellspring: soft power.
Tim may be, as Bailey puts it, “an open nerve,” but as it turns out, the devout Catholic and political naïf — who falls for suave State Department operative Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) just as Sen. Joseph McCarthy tries to purge the federal government of LGBTQ people — is formidable indeed.
Stretching from the Lavender Scare to the depths of the AIDS crisis, in scenes of tenderness, cruelty and toe-curling sex, Bailey’s performance communicates that little-spoken truth of relationships: It takes more strength to submit than it does to control. The former demands discipline, courage, trust; the latter requires only force.
“In ‘Bridgerton,’ [Bailey] is like a Hawkins Fuller character — he is very sexy and has lots of power, has that kind of confident charisma that absolutely is not Tim at all,” says “Fellow Travelers” creator Ron Nyswaner.
But any doubt about Bailey’s ability to mesh with Bomer, who boarded the project early in development, was put to bed with the actors’ virtual rehearsal of a meeting on a park bench in the pilot. “‘Well, that’s a first,’” Nyswaner recalls an executive texting him. “I cried in a chemistry read.”
‘Am I inviting people in?’
Bailey grew up in a musical family in the Oxfordshire countryside outside London, and this, coupled with an appreciation for the morning prayers, choir practice and Mass he attended as a scholarship student at the local Catholic school, fed his precocious talents. (“I loved the performance of it,” he laughs. “Not to diminish the celebration of religious process, but I did love the idea of wearing a gown.”) By age 10, he’d appeared in the West End, playing Gavroche in a production of “Les Misérables,” an experience he now recognizes as an encounter with a queer found family — albeit one shadowed by the toll of the AIDS crisis, which peaked in the U.K. in the mid-1990s.
“When I’m asked about my childhood, there’s so much I don’t remember, and I think that’s true of anyone who’s been in fight or flight for 20 years,” he says. “I would have been in a cast of people whose friends would have died in the last seven years. I think of where I was seven years ago. I had all my gay friends then. It’s only retrospectively that I can retrofit a real gay community around me [in the theater], that I just wasn’t aware of [then].”
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, American and British culture presented queer adolescents with a bewildering array of mixed signals. As beloved celebrities came out in growing numbers, and the battle for marriage equality became a central locus of LGBTQ political organizing, the media continued to propagate harmful stereotypes of gay men as miserable, lonely, perverted or worse — and, Bailey remembers, callously turned George Michael, arrested on suspicion of cruising in a Beverly Hills restroom in 1998, and Irish pop star Stephen Gately, who revealed his sexuality in 1999, fearful he was about to be outed, into tabloid spectacles.
No wonder Bailey, like many LGBTQ people of his generation, should feel the “chemical” thrill of “validation and acceptance” during London Pride at age 18, then embark on a two-year relationship with a woman in his 20s.
“Dangerously, if you’re not exposed to people who can show you other examples of happiness, you think that’s the easiest way to live,” Bailey says. “It’s funny. You look back and you can tell the story in one way, which is that I always knew who I was and my sexuality and my identity within that. But obviously at times, it was really tough. I compromised my own happiness, for sure. And compromised other people’s happiness.”
https://preview.redd.it/9q0vkj3djd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c631452122b5fb2c401e95352dcc0c21d54d0d7
Disclosures about his personal life have become particularly thorny for the actor since the premiere of “Bridgerton,” the blockbuster bodice-ripper from executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
“The Netflix effect does knock you off center completely,” he says, recalling the experience of finding a paparazzo waiting outside his new flat before he’d even moved in. “Suddenly, you do start having nightmares about people climbing in your windows... Even now, talking about it makes me feel like, ‘Am I inviting people in?’”
He is also critical of the media for churning out headlines about the smallest details of celebrities’ private lives, often detached from their original context. In an interview with the London Evening Standard published in December, Bailey described a harrowing encounter in a Washington, D.C., coffee shop in which a man threatened his life for being queer — and, in recounting the experience, offhandedly mentioned the “lovely man” he’d called, shaken, after it happened. Although Bailey acknowledges that the original story handled the subject with aplomb, he felt dismayed that more attention wasn’t paid to the intended warning about rising anti-LGBTQ sentiment: “The only thing that got syndicated from that story was that I had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t true,” he sighs. “It was kind of depressing, if I’m honest.”
Still, Bailey, who once turned down a role in a queer-themed TV series because it would have required him to speed along revelations about his personal life he wasn’t ready to make, is prepared to embrace the power of vulnerability when it feeds the work. Although a member of his inner circle expressed doubts about “Fellow Travelers’” steamy sex scenes, for instance, the actor intuited that they were what made the project worth doing: “I was like, ‘I’m telling you, they are the reason why this is going to be brilliant.’”
‘He’s changed my trajectory in my own life’
To those who would complain about the state of sex in film and TV, “Fellow Travelers” is the perfect riposte. All of it matters, from Tim’s first flirtation with Hawk to the finale’s closing minutes, because the series, at its core, is about the importance of soft power: the strength required to bend, but not break; to adapt, but not abandon oneself; to survive without shrinking to nothing in the process. And depicting that through sex, specifically gay sex, makes “Fellow Travelers” radical indeed.
Bailey understands that baring so much comes with certain risks. When I tell him that research for the story has filled my algorithmic “For You” feed on X (formerly Twitter) with speculation that his onscreen relationship with Bomer has a real-life element, he notes that “shipping” fictional couples and costars alike has long been part of Hollywood fantasy. But he bristles at the implication that he and Bomer are anything but skilled actors at work.
“I would love for people to know that the success of our chemistry isn’t based on us f—. It’s actually about us leaning into the craft,” he says. “It’s a vulnerable situation to be in, talking about it on record. I don’t want to rob people of their thoughts. But I do have a set of values, and as an artist, you don’t need to be f— to tell that love story.”
Underlying that craft, Bailey adds, is the confidence to speak up, as with one scene in “Fellow Travelers” that was adjusted because he said, “I don’t want to be naked today.” He learned to use his voice the hard way: In his early 20s, he recalls, he was once “bullied” on set when “someone was threatened” by him and vowed to himself, “I’m never going to do that to someone. I’m never going to allow that to happen."
https://preview.redd.it/4qwts4jrjd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b9be4bb693aa886389f599b4e82c0f6a520be45
This impulse to direct his influence in support of others has blossomed further with “Fellow Travelers.” On the day of our interview, Bailey enthuses about an upcoming meeting with legendary gay rights activist Cleve Jones and shares his idea for a docuseries recording the stories of elders in the LGBTQ+ community while they are still here to tell them. He describes lying in a hospital bed on set on World AIDS Day, in character as Tim, surrounded by gay men who had lost friends and lovers during the crisis, and finding himself thinking, “What do I want to leave behind?”
“I think he’s changed my trajectory in my own life,” Bailey says.
This is, perhaps, the most common reaction I know to diving deep into queer history — the understanding that we, like our forerunners, are responsible for shaping the queer future, whether in politics, society or art. No one is going to do it on our behalf.
As we stand on the nondescript corner now named for her, I relate the story of the late queer activist Nancy Valverde, who was arrested repeatedly while a barber school student in the 1950s on suspicion of “masquerading” because of her preference for short hair and men’s clothing, and later successfully challenged her harassment by the police in court.
“What a hero!” Bailey exclaims, wondering at Valverde’s bravery. “The thing that’s so interesting with power battles is, ultimately, identity is the thing that gives you the most strength and power in your life, isn’t it?
“Because that’s one thing people can’t take away from you: who you are and how you express yourself."

Hey everyone,
I've always had a passion for stand-up comedy and I've finally decided to take the plunge and try an open mic night here in Scotland. I'm super excited but also a bit nervous since this will be my first time performing.
Does anyone here have experience with open mic nights in Scotland? I'd love some advice on what to expect, how to prepare, and any tips for a newbie. Are there specific venues you would recommend for beginners? Also, any advice on how to handle stage fright would be much appreciated!

2024.05.14 13:06 ginger0114 Laptop upgrades - What to get?

Apologies if this is a tad long, I'm just trying to figure out what to do. If anything. So I'll add a TL;DR at the bottom.
Although I'm comfortable and confident in sourcing and changing all these components, I'm still a noob at deciding what and when to get stuff. So any assistance is appreciated.
I posted the other day about reapplying thermal paste due to slightly high temps and it got me thinking about other potential upgrades I can get/do, so hoping, if at all possible, you guys might have some ideas, recommendations or other tips and tricks (i.e. BIOS/other software) to help me get the most out of it. I also a few questions!
I have;
MSI Raider GE66 12UGS - 2yrs old
Current (average temp range)
Light work - GPU ~40-45 Celsius/ CPU (fluctuates heavily ) ~40-60 Celsius
Under load - GPU ~75-85 Celsius/ CPU ~85-90 Celsius
So, as stated, I'm looking at trying to do a few upgrades to my laptop. I have been thinking about it for a while but still unsure on how to go about it. Firstly, would it be worth it? I'm aware that this isn't exactly bottom of the barrel, however I believe it could be better.
My 1st point of call would be to add an extra TB or 2 of storage, as although I have an external hard drive, i've had to occasionally keep removing games in order to fit others on.
Q1 - Like RAM, would i have to get an SSD that is the same speed, or is it not necessary and can add whatever I like?
Second point will be to upgrade the RAM, As mentioned, currently at 16gb, thinking of going up to 32gb.
Q2 - Is this necessary? Will I gain much (any) more performance by doing so or will it be negligible?
Third point of call, would be to re-apply thermal paste and putty. Yes i have just done paste, however I have since been made aware of a better quality paste, plus my putty was a little dry anyway so makes sense to kill 2 birds with one stone. Trying to keep temps as low as possible.
Q3 - Any recommendations for putty?
  1. Battery. Im plugged in 95% of the time currently, so could probably take a miss on this. but am open to changing as the battery is not too expensive.
Q4 - At what stage is it worth swapping out the battery? What wear %?
Fifth Point would be to upgrade the fans, because recently I've started to get what I believe to be coil whine. I have dusted off the fans and yet it is still occuring so for the sake you a few ÂŁ, it gives me piece of mind...And stops setting off my tinnitus...
Right, I think that's all that possible, but if not the please let me know! Once again, I appreciate if you read this far, and any help would be grand.
TL;DR - Looking at upgrading laptop - current components above. Is it worth it? If so, any recommendations for both hardware and software changes?
I am very well aware that most of these may be completely unnecessary, and if so please do say so. This is just the thinking stage at the moment, so open to anything and everything!

2024.05.14 13:05 WillDrinkFromUrSkull T/P-series Thinkpad or Thinkbook for CS Master's degree study

I own a T440p myself, and already upgraded everything possible (screen, touchpad, CPU, RAM, ...). I love being a hardware geek, I love (highly) upgradable machines, and I know I can trust a Thinkpad.
I am going to the UK to study my Computer Science Master's degree this year. At some point I think my good old T440p can still keep up with today's modern work. But overall, T440p is not a very good horse these days, and it will just take up unnecessary space in my baggage, so I know I need something newer, more powerful and more portable.
Though I have only been looking at Thinkpads and Thinkpads only when it comes to buying a laptop, several Thinkbook models really got my attention. I am going to explicitly specify the model, it is the Thinkbook 14 G6+, specs are Ryzen 7 8845H with Radeon 780M graphics, 32GB of RAM @ 5000-ish MHz, 1TB SSD (1 spare slot), 3K resolution @ 120Hz, plenty of connection ports. I don't know if this model is for international market, but in Vietnam where I live, many reliable merchants imported machines directly from China (Thinkbook, Xiaoxin (Chinese in-house model for Ideapad), some Chinese exclusive Thinkpad models like Thinkpad Neo 14, ...), which makes it extremely easy for me to get my hands on one of them. I have done research and am fully aware that what Thinkbook line-up aims toward, how its build quality is, ... Also, the elegant metallic look really catches my eyes. The price for a brand new one is $710.
$710 is not that much for such a powerful machine that houses a R7 8845H. However, thinking budget-wise, I could probably opt for a cheaper model that would still serve me well with my studying to save a few bucks for my new tablet as well, which is also a crucial necessity. I am thinking of the T480 (non S) which is the last great model where you can still upgrade plenty of things, and the P1 (up to G2). A good T480 (with i7-8650U) unit in my area initially prices around $200-250, and $400-450 after fully upgraded. A P1 starts at around $600, which is relatively close to the $710 threshold. The P1 option is becoming a bit unreasonable as it is only $100 cheaper but offers a CPU (i7-8750H or i7-9759H, pretty much the same thing) that performs nowhere near as well as the R7 8845H. I think if I were to get a P1 I would not upgrade anything at all.
However, the real question, is if the T480 or P1 can keep up with the workload required in a CS Master's degree program and is worth the amount of money saved? Or do I need an actual robust CPU (along with way faster RAM)?
As an input, I will be studying a handful of modules during the program. Some of the modules that I suppose will require a lot of computation power are Advanced AI & ML, Advanced Programming, and Computer Vision.
I would greatly appreciate any opinion, especially from CS undergraduates or postgraduates from all over the world.
Thank you!

2024.05.14 13:05 Ok-Kaleidoscope7818 Sole trader vs Director, advice appreciated!

Hello good people of UKPF! Looking for advice on the following situation (TLDR at the bottom);
I've recently started a new role where my employer wants me to be a contractor, rather than FTE, so I was faced with a dilemma of whether to set up as a sole trader or a limited company. For context, I'm in Scotland and my salary from the employer is ÂŁ80,000 pa.
After speaking to a professional accountant we decided it would be more tax efficient to go the LTD route, paying myself with a salary to the personal allowance threshold, and the rest in dividends. This made sense to me because the accountant said I wouldn't need to pay the higher tax rates due to the dividend tax rate being low(er).
I took his advice and set up an ltd, and now I've started my new employment. When trying to think about how much money I should set aside each month for taxes, I started to model some different scenarios to see how much I would need, between Income tax, NI, corporation tax, employer's NI and dividend tax.
What I found, if my sums are correct, is that I would have been just as well being a sole trader;
As a Sole Trader: Take home would be ÂŁ54,612 after all income tax (Scottish rates) and NI.
As a Director of ltd company: Take home would be ÂŁ56,585 after corporation tax on profit (minus my personal allowance salary), dividend tax (after ÂŁ500 tax free allowance), employers NI.
Cons of being a sole trader;
Cons of being a director;
Another consideration is that I may eventually need to register for VAT if I earn above ÂŁ90,000, but I believe that's the same for both scenarios.
Is there anything I'm missing? Any obvious reasons I should be a director rather than a sole trader? Really appreciate anyone's thoughts!
TLDR: I'm a Scottish contractor with a salary of £80,000 – should I be a Sole Trader or Director or an LTD?

Unmotivated, tired on TRT
Hi,
I've been on TRT for about 18 months now, and just to get this out of the way - has been transformational for my mental health. My anxiety and depression is gone, and I don't have mood swings any more - I am a very level playing field, which is bliss.
However, I feel pretty flat - not depressed, I would describe is as unmotivated. I "can't be arsed" most of the time and I don't feel driven. I feel a bit tired all the time and I procrastinate a lot. I do have ADHD and Autism, but this is definitely different - my ADHD made me very driven and I was active all the time.
I *think* I have some straggling effects of COVID (memory fog, being drained after exercise etc) and I noticed that my T levels were very very low after a few bouts of COVID. That's what started this treatment.
I'm taking about 0.4ml every other day, and 0.5mg anastrazole every 4 days.
Previously my oestradiol levels were pretty high for a long time, and last time they were measured was around January (similar regime) and I was at 146.
Any thoughts or advice appreciated.
I was doing really well on the T, but I just can't fathom if my regime is good/right or if it's some stragglers from COVID that's making me feel.. meh.

2024.05.14 13:04 Lit-Up More than one teacher, yay or nay?

I’ve just read a post on here about how teachers refuse to teach kids who have more than one teacher. I’m an adult learner (38) and wondering why or if it's a problem if an adult student has more than one teacher.
I've just come back to the piano, working through grade 1, having taken a few lessons when I was a kid and also learned violin to grade 5/6 and self taught at guitar. Currently getting taught in group classes at a community college.
As a child I would have one private teacher for each instrument I was learning. I found that this could often be intense and meant that I had to depend a lot on that relationship. There could be a feeling of frustration with the instrument if I didn’t gel with the teaching style. As with counselling, I think the efficacy of the sessions is predicated on your relationship with the tutor, and like any relationship, it’s hard to find a perfect match in one person.
As a general rule I don't like to invest everything into one person. I keenly pursued dance for a couple of years (only stopped due to health) and I enjoyed going to different dance classes and learning different things from different teachers, often within the same style. I found that I learned different repertoire, danced to different songs and picked up different techniques and mentality from each teacher. Some teachers I would idolise as performers, but they weren’t so good as teachers. I only discovered all this by learning with each of them. I’m wondering why this shouldn’t be the case with piano.

2024.05.14 13:04 Advanced-Chain4096 Provisionally passed at Q100

I passed today at Q100 in about 80 minutes. What a relieve to get my social live back :)!
My background is 15 years as helpdesk / system engineer. The last couple of years my interest grew for cybersecurity so I passed a couple of pentest certificates (OSCP as the main one). I work at an MSP and do a lot of security related implementations and improvements at customers.
I started studying around februari, at first with the OSG. That book was way to dry to read cover to cover so I orderded destination CISSP and read that cover to cover. That was a good starting point. Further resources:
- Exam cram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nyZhYnCNLA
- Boson practice exams. I think these were the closest to the actual exam I got
- Learnzapp practice exams. Because it is on mobile I would do these all the time but the questions don't really match up with the real exam
- 50 practice questions, great for the mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbVY0Cg8Ntw
I used the OSG to read on subjects that were not clear enough to me.

The exam was indeed a torture like all stories I have read in this sub. Maybe 30% of the questions I was sure about. Some had multiple 'best' answers in my opinion and some did not have the correct answer at all (for me) :). When the exam stopped at Q100 I really had no clue if I passed or failed.
Time for some well deserved rest now!

2024.05.14 13:04 digital_wiz How We Scaled a Hair Extension Brand using Facebook Ads and SEO to give $80,000 ROI in 6 Months (Detailed Breakdown)

Hello Redditors,
This is an incredible success story of how we helped a client achieve incredible results in just four months, generating an $80,000 return on investment (ROI) with a combination of SEO and Facebook Ads. We have completed many successful projects and there's a certain satisfaction in seeing our strategies translate to such tangible growth. I have tried to keep this post extremely detailed so that it can be beneficial for experienced marketers and newcomers alike.
The Client: Hair Extension E-commerce Brand
Revenue Split Between SEO and Fb ads: 3:2
Average Order Value: $350
Facebook Ads Spend(For 6 Months): $10,000
Total Revenue(6 months): $140,000
Other Expenses(6 months): Product Cost + Delivery cost + Team + Agency Fees + Website Optimization + Packaging: $50000
Basic Company Background:
The brand was being run by a Mother-Daughter duo for the past 3 months. They had a shopify website with average structure and were struggling with facebook ads themselves. Although they made few physical sales due to friends and relatives but were unable to utilize the digital potential of their business as such. After trying facebook ads for some time they wanted a reliable digital marketing team to work with and they were recommended to us by one of our other customers who has a service based business. Initially we connected majorly for facebook ads but after the initial discussion when were doing research from our side, we found that there is huge potential in SEO for this niche so we suggested that we should prepare a proper website on wordpress and focus on both SEO and Ads parallelly as, although Ads will give an initial boost to the business but SEO will bring some stability and help in building a sustainable business.
Facebook Ads Campaign Structure:
Ads Creatives and Brand Positioning:
It's important to note that after deep research we could find that a major share our hair extensions customers are females aged between 21-45 so we did not actively position our brand as solving problems of low hair volume, but instead we focused on how the products ads style, gives a much better look and you can try new hairstyles and hair colors daily. Also since almost all the demographics in this age group are working, we tested a professional look angle as well which gave us decent results. In ad creatives as well as on the website we made the daughter as the face of the product as we want to slowly grow her instagram as well which can add another organic and sustainable stream of revenue. She shoots before and after transition videos, general product application videos and other videos for ads according to the target audience and brand positioning strategy we discussed earlier. Instead of making long videos focused on product details a lot, we made short but captivating videos which can appeal to the young audience’s fashion sense.
Key Takeaways from FB Ads:
Mostly Meta Ads or Any other marketing tactic is just a traffic source but conversion will basically happen by how well you are able to communicate your product to the audience through your website. Its is necessary to have a smooth user journey, attractive offers, crisp information and right brand positioning on the website.
It is extremely important to make data driven decisions and track customer journeys meticulously. Always rely on your own tracking or google analytics to avoid the potential unreliability of Facebook Ads Manager.
Seo Strategy
If you don’t already know this, SEO is all about how effectively you can strategize your content and technical efforts keeping a bigger picture in mind. After our initial keyword research we could find that the average Kd of the important keywords was low when it comes to commercial keywords which were directly related to the business.
It's important to note that since the website was being built after our onboarding only so it was easy for us to structure the website according to the SEO strategy that we prepared.
At every stage we had meetings with the developer to ensure that there are no technical issues that will hinder the SEO growth and future and also we structured the website to be SEO friendly. We built separate pages for all the product categories and after through keyword research we added content to those pages so that the pages itself can rank for commercial keywords.
After the website was ready we audited it for technical issues(Like mobile friendliness, H1 tags, canonical tags, etc) we started focusing on the content. We wanted to establish our website as a trusted authority in the hair extensions and hair care industry in general.
Since the website was completely new, initially we created blogs(2-3 times per week) around informational keywords with low KD purely for increasing our website authority and bringing the initial traffic on the website. We have seen that usually people start stressing about approaching big websites for guest postings since the first day itself but if your keyword research and content is solid, that is not required in the beginning. Initially we focused on profile creations, image submissions, pdf submissions, internal linking in the content, web 2.0 backlinks etc and this was more than enough for us to rank for low difficulty keywords and increase our DA to a decent level so that our category pages can rank for low difficulty keywords.
Here I would like to include a tip, many times people are worried that what if the backlink that they have created doesn't get indexed. In the initial phase we work really hard when it comes to what we call as maturing our backlinks as this is the major factor for ranking on low difficulty keywords. So basically what we do is, we make backlinks of our web 2.0 backlinks itself which helps the primary backlink in getting indexed which ultimately helps with our website DA.
Also many people have been asking us in our previous posts how we structure our blog since I talk a lot about content quality, see it's not as hard and it doesn't involve a lot of research at least in the initial phase when you just have to rank on low difficulty keywords. In this phase usually what we do is study the top 5 ranking blogs on the particular keyword and make sure that we include more content and more subheadings then them. Also we try to find opportunities to include tables or charts wherever possible, we include good quality images(original if possible) and at this stage internal linking is very very important so we focus on that as well. In later stages although the basic strategy for framing the blogs remains same, overall content strategy varies a lot from business to business and requires a lot of strategizing depending on the brand positioning goals.
So after we were able to rank for low difficulty informational keywords and our Website DA reached a decent level due to our backlinking efforts, we started writing content around the fashion advice and common problems which people face related to hair in general. But as discussed earlier, we wanted to keep our brand positioning fashion centric, so even while writing about common problems we applied a positive and solution centric approach. We strategically placed internal links to our product pages in the content and tested popups with offers as well. Apart from this, we started guest posting as well at this stage. For finding websites for guest posting we used SEMrush’s backlink gap analysis tool and created a segregated list of blogs that we can reach out to based on their content quality and DA. By this time the store started generating decent revenue from ads and SEO so the client was completely onboard with reaching out to blogs for guest posting. Guest posting and overall strategic SEO application started generating a good amount of traffic for us and in 3-4 months the revenue generated due to SEO surpassed our Ads revenue as well.
Advantages of Combining SEO and Paid Ads
While Facebook Ads played a crucial role in launching the brand and driving initial traffic, SEO has emerged as the primary driver of sustainable growth. This approach allowed us to:
SEO efforts are always ongoing but we are really satisfied with the base that we have built and we are really looking forward to working with keywords with higher KD and generating more revenue with SEO In the upcoming months. Although we will keep running ads in future as well mostly for awareness purposes but the major revenue will be generated from our SEO efforts. Apart from this, as we mentioned earlier, we are looking to actively start the Social Media efforts as well from the next month itself. We will be looking to target Instagram and Tiktok in the initial phase and we believe in 2-3 months social media will contribute towards 25% of our revenue which will grow rapidly.
Thankyou For Reading!

2024.05.14 13:03 Auto_Potato How to make my reactor controller "better"?

How to make my reactor controller
So i'm making a QoL Orca 2 mod, and one of the things I added is a 5C ARC I saw in "Magic Reactor Controller", it worked quite well for me and it's simple so I really like it.
But a few days ago there's a comment saying the ARC is not the best, so I begin researching on different ARCs made by diffrent people, I did some testing and still find the 5C to be the best ARC, it respond to load spike quickly and prevents damage from load drop decent enough (Most of them have the same speed of adjustment which makes me think it's the quickest components can do).
The only differents I find is there are some more functions on more complicated ARC like "Performance Mode" or "Modifiable efficiency", "Toggle undervolt" and whatnot, is that what makes it better?
Anyway the main problem is I don't know how to make a controller better or what to focus on, almost all of the articles about it are from 2023, I'm new to engineering so please any help or any ARC recommendation would be appreciate, I just wanna know how to make my sub better.
The 5C ARC i currently use.

2024.05.14 13:03 theweaponofdarkness Deck Help: Spellcaster/Blue Eyes White Dragon

Hello everyone,
I just want to start out by offering my thanks for there being a page dedicated to this game.
To start, I did start playing Duel Links very recently, and I do find the game very enjoyable, from battling the legendary duelists at the gate, unlocking milestone cards/items and so forth. I just need help with one particular thing, and that involves a deck I'm trying to create.
So, to get this out of the way, I have purchased one copy of The Secret of Magicians deck and I have also purchased one copy of The Magician's Chronicle deck.
So, with these decks, I do notice a good blend of Spellcaster Effect monsters that go well with one another (mainly supported by The Secret of Magicians), and with the Magician's Chronicle deck, there are a few cards that help augment Dark Magicians cards I have.
I have a mess of a deck with a combination of these cards, in addition to like, two Dark Magicians, two Dark Magician Girls and three Blue Eyes White Dragon cards, with supporting cards to help me "attempt" summoning their respective Extra Deck monsters on to the field via dedicated Fusion spell cards that came with each deck. My flaw I believe is that I'm going over 20 cards (which is making me realize i should have kept it this way all along) and I believe I have an inadequate ratio of monsters, effect monsters to spell and trap cards.
My Goal: How can I make a compact deck that allows me to pull off (or really, have a chance of) some of those high level summons, or fortify the field with at least one of my Extra Deck monsters? I'm not asking for the perfect deck or anything, but just some advice and tidbits on what I can do with the two aforementioned deck purchases.
I appreciate and welcome any help with this. Thanks in advance.

2024.05.14 13:02 ZestyclosePlatypus30 International payments - bank transfer. What is the most cost effective platform to use for larger payments?

Hello! I am looking to transfer money from the UK to Spain for educational purposes and want to understand what is the most cost effective platform to do so? I have HSBC and was told about their Global Money Account, there is Barclays, have seen good reviews for Wise, currencies direct, etc. Factors to consider: 1)Lowest exchange rate 2) Low fees (or zero fees) (my research shows Wise takes in % - would this be a lot for payments over £5k?) 3) easy to use. Would really appreciate hearing about people’s experiences using these platforms, why you use what you do and have found best etc. Many thanks!

2024.05.14 13:01 ImM3llow 26 [M4F] East Coast / Anywhere. I just got diagnosed as your boyfriend. Yeah no they said it's terminal we have to stay together forever until i die🤷‍♂️

Edit: DO NOT message me a simple hi or hello, with no information about you, Put some effort in to your message like i have, come on. Day+Attempt#187
Hello everyone, Thank you for taking the time to read, I know its long, I know - I know. But its worth the read, Trust me. I appreciate you immensely.
Here's a bit about me,
My name is Jay, I live on the East coast of the US. I'm looking for love - like everyone else on here.., but you may not believe or even be doubtful that I've never had a GF before with me being 26, but its true. I'm simply just not willing to "be with" just anyone and I'm very picky. I want us to be a match, more than just have similar things in common.
One thing I have always been told is that I'm a "Real Catch, I'd be extremely lucky to have someone like you" - WELL THEN TAKE ME. I'M FREE. LOL.
About me:
Physically -
~I'm a semi-tall guy, around 5'10.
~I'm thin but muscular.
~I have dirty blonde/ brown hair.
~Changing colored eyes.
~A voice nice enough to melt all your safeguards and get right into your heart and weak spots.
~I do not have any tattoos or piercings. Though I would like to get some eventually.
If you'd like to see a picture of me just ask and I'll show you - IF I may see you as well, I simply just don't want a picture of me out there for anyone to see.
-If there's anything else you'd like to know just ask.
Otherwise -
~I do have 3 pet bunnies I would be more than happy to show you, they are extremely cute.
~I'm a very honest and down to earth guy.
~I'm very patient and easy going.
~I'm very curious and inquisitive. I will try to ask everything I can to learn all about you haha.
~I'm Very VERY Kind & Caring, I will probably ask how you are feeling a bajillion times a day, simply out of care for you.
~I can get pretty clingy, and will always want your attention and to be talking with you. If i have someone im interested in i wont want to talk to anyone else🤷‍♂️
~I'm very trustworthy - you can confide in me, and entrust your deepest secrets and I wont tell a soul.
~I'm a HUGE hopeless romantic, im old fashioned and will always try to impress you.
- I'm, a BIG softie even though I may look a smol bit intimidating, but I'd do just about anything to see you smile or laugh. And yes.., I do mean anything.
~I'm a big goof - I will get up to some silly shenanigans ALL the time, I will crack dumb jokes and send you memes and tik toks just to make you happy, even if its from across the room I'd wait to see your reaction lol.
~I'm extremely loyal, and would never even think of cheating.
~I will cook for you, and clean up too, even around the house, I'm very self productive and don't ask for much. Just don't forget to kiss the cook.
~I'd also love to just cuddle up and watch a movie or read a book together, anything to get us closer. Id try to take you out on dates whenever possible haha. I have a million SUPER romantic date ideas I have but have never had anyone interested enough in me to take out. Here's your chance ;)
~I will always want to share stuff I find interesting with you, and try to share every moment of every day with you. I'm not looking for someone who can only talk for a small amount of time, I want someone who's willing to put in all the effort I put into them back into me, it goes both ways. If I'm "with" someone you are my TOP priority nobody and nothing else would be. You would be the only person I'd truly want to talk to, so rest assured I would NEVER cheat, even more so because no one is interested in me - Hence why I'm here hahaha.
I'm sure there is more to me than this snippet but I cant think of more at the moment haha, so get to know me and find out more about me.
Some of my interests are: Engineering- I'm a nerd. I admit it. I love being technical and hands on, I love building things. All kinds of things, from furniture, machinery, and reverse engineering anything I find. I love learning how things work and trying to improve things.
Music - I prefer music with a very fast pace, or with some very meaningful lyrics I can relate to. I love to sing along to music and songs that have a deep meaning behind it I can sympathize with makes it all the better. Some bands I like are: Bad Omens, Beartooth, Demon Hunter, MIW, I9K - The list goes on. I'm a bit of a metalhead unfortunately.
TV Shows & Movies - I love watching shows, and I'd love to stream some shows and have some E-dates with you, to get to know you, or if you are close to me, maybe we could do it in person. Some shows I like or more of the Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Comedy, Action, stuff like: National Treasure, Halo, BattleBots, Rick and Morty, AHS, Anything Marvel or DC, The Witcher, Wednesday, The Sandman, The Magicians, The Umbrella Academy, ETC.
Gaming - Yes yes I know, Basic guy likes basic stuff. But gaming has been a thing for me since forever. I know most of you wont care or want to hear that, but I'll leave out the specifics on this part unless you are interested in that, MEGA Bonus points if you are.
Here's a lists of Cons to dating me-
~I'm not Ryan Reynolds. Disappointing, I know.
~I will fight you on what goes on pizza lol.
~I'm not rich.., Yet.
~I can't pronounce Worcestershire.
~I'm slightly forgetful, but with good reasoning.
~(Not really a con but- some might disagree) I still have ALL of my firsts, Do with that what you will c:
~I've got an endless pile of love and affection and no one to give it to! What a dilemma! Help me fix it?
Other than that I'll save the rest for a bit more of getting to know each other.
Here's a bit of what I'm looking in you:
~Preferably someone with lots of free time, and loves to chit chat. I'm seriously not interested in getting 1 message a day. Though I understand people get busy, I personally am not willing to try to learn about you and form something with 7 responses a week. Effort gets reciprocated and I appreciate the time you put in me.
~Physically: -I’m not personally attracted to anyone who’s “curvy/ chubby”, I apologize. Not a shallow thing, I just dont have the attraction chemical in my brain for that, I’m sorry. -If you’re shorter than me, thats a plus to me. -I love dimples, if you have those when you smile, bonus points 😊 - I’m not sure what else to put.., but as for nsfw wise find out😂
~I'm a sucker for a different accent other than American, and if you have an Posh English accent you have already won my heart.
~I'm also only really looking for someone within the ages of 18-35. I don't want anyone old enough to be my mom lol.
~I'd prefer (But not a must) people NOT on the other side of the world, as other time zones SUCK. I don't expect to find anyone who also has never had a boyfriend either, but that would be a real plus. I also don't mind a LDR, but I don't want that forever. But it gives us time to get to know each other.
But as for attributes I'm looking for in you:
~Someone who is above all else very very Loyal and would never cheat.
~Someone who is Honest, and will tell me the truth over a little white lie.
~Someone who is Kind & Caring, who'd constantly check on me, and accept me for who I am & help me improve day to day.
~Someone who is trustworthy, and I can count on to keep my secrets safe, or even just help me remember things.., I do tend to be somewhat forgetful.
~Someone who is very Patient and wants to see me succeed and will help me do so, just like I would help you. Even if its small day to day things, I would appreciate your company ANY time.
~I want a partner who is Affectionate, can reciprocate, and loves to snuggle and talk about their day, and what their interests are, and what makes them happy.
~Someone who can admit they get clingy or overprotective is a bonus.
~A partner with good communication is key, if something wrong we have to be able to talk about it.
~A partner who likes to game with me or at least watch me play would be a plus but not a requirement.
~Someone with a good sense of humor and like to joke around, I am a big goof after all and I love to joke around. Sending memes is always appreciated and good to cheer people up too!
~I'd prefer someone with the same music taste, but not a requirement, Plus if you wouldn't mind if I send you love songs occasionally that's a bonus, or sending me some back haha.
~Being willing to voice call is a must, Texting forever is not the way to go. I have to know what your voice is like haha, later on we can video call if you are comfortable with that. I prefer chatting on Discord because Reddit messages of any kind I'm sure you know are unreliable and sucky in general. So please send me your discord if you have one :)
~I would LOVE to see picture of your pets if you have any. Bonus points if it includes your beautiful self haha.
I'm sure there is more I'm looking for but I cant think of it right now haha, I will have to edit this when I think of it.
Please tell me about you as an opener! I told you a good bit about me, now its your turn haha.
Tell me some things like -
~What's your name?
~Where are you from?
~How old are you?
~What are your hobbies / interests?
~What about my post interested you?
~Where is my TV Remote?!
~Selfie? Pet pics?
~Hit me with your best joke or meme :)
~What's your favorite candy?
I'd LOVE to get to know you, and see where things go.

2024.05.14 13:01 digital_wiz How We Scaled a Hair Extension Brand using Facebook Ads and SEO to give $80,000 ROI in 6 Months (Detailed Breakdown)

2024.05.14 13:00 Neowza Weekly Advocacy Post

Below you'll find information and links to help advocate for Reproductive Freedoms and Abortion care in Canada and emerging policy issues with the Reddit platform. This is a recurring post and will be periodically updated as needed. Feel free to post additional information and discussions in the comments.
Advocating for Abortion Care in Canada:
Reference: Policy Options, via the Institute for Research on Public Policy and Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights
What can you do to improve access to abortion care in Canada?
  1. Listen, research and learn. This is always the first step to understand any problem.
  2. Send a letter to your MP and MPP. Tell them that access to abortion care is important and how difficult it can be to access it in your province. Urge them to prevent anti-choice groups and CPCs from receiving charitable status, and to revoke the charitable status from CPCs that already have it. Encourage them to include reasonable reimbursement for travel costs related to receiving medical care when it is not available in your community. And push them to pass Safe Access Zone Legislation to protect patients, practitioners and their staff from anti-choice harassment and intimidation.
  3. Give a donation to a pro-choice charitable organization of your choice. Remember, if you give a total of $201 CDN or more to Canadian charitable organizations, you'll get a credit of 29% of your total annual donations on your income taxes (for those that file Canadian Income Taxes, only).
  4. Sign up for the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada Newsletter. https://www.arcc-cdac.ca/
  5. Participate in local marches and rallys in support of access to abortion care.
  6. Spread the Word. Tell your friends and family. Encourage them to research, listen and learn. Encourage them to contact their MPP and MPs.
  7. If you work in a Doctor's office or as a family physician, consider incorporating Mifegymiso into your practice to ensure patients have timely access to this essential service. If you are a Doctor, or studying to be one, consider opening an Abortion Care practice when you are licensed and qualified to do so, especially in rural areas where there are a lack of options.
  8. If you work in politics, consider proposing legislation that will ensure safe access zones for abortion care providers and their clients and covering reasonable travel costs for constituents when medical care is not available in their community.
  9. If you are a journalist or work in media, consider preparing pieces sharing the difficulty Canadians can have accessing medical care such as abortions.
  10. If you work in the area of Not For Profit/Advocacy, consider partnering with a Pro-choice organization and helping them spread information and lobby for improving access to abortion care for Canadians.
  11. If you know someone who needs abortion care, consider giving them a ride to a clinic, helping them access the advice and care they need, and provide non-judgemental support.
  12. Ensure persons of First Nations, Metis and Inuit heritage know about Jordan's Principle, which ensures that First Nations children (which includes people who can become pregnant under the age of 18) can access the products, services and supports they need, when they need them. https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1568396042341/1568396159824

Emerging Policy Issues with Reddit
On July 1, 2023, Reddit raised the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that killed every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. This policy change meant that mobile users would have a lesser experience browsing Reddit, users with visual difficulties could not browse reddit as screenreaders are not compatible with the official Reddit app, and mods lost tools that they depend on to keep communities on-topic and spam-free. Many subreddits protested this change in June 2023, and the Reddit admins enforced draconian measures such as removing and replacing mods who privatized their subreddits in protest of this policy change.
On September 12, 2023, Reddit will eliminate reddit coins, including removing all accumulated coins, a perk that Reddit Premium users pay for every month. Coins are used to reward comments and posts by showing your appreciation for the effort. Some reddit coins offer the ability to use reddit without ads.
What can you do to protest the policy changes at Reddit?
  1. Listen, research and learn. Check /modcoord for updates
  2. Cancel your Reddit Premium membership
  3. Participate in subreddit led protests
  4. Look for other forums to patronize. We have a forum on Discord called Auntie Network Canada. Message the mods here for an invite link to the Discord group.
  5. Complain. Message the mods of reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit. Leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app.

2024.05.14 13:00 PrincessArcher How do I (29f) manage my best friend (29f) feeling sidelined and also being stuck in a bad way without losing her completely?

Not sure if this should be in relationship_advice, so will post here for now and move it if needs be. ——— I love my best friend like she is my sister and have always stood by her side.
But recently I’ve been struggling with my relationship with her. I suppose the cracks started years ago when she got into her first serious relationship which wound up abusive. We had many conversations about her leaving him but it wound up pointless. She still speaks to said him and though I’ve tried to encourage her & she’s done therapy etc, she still refuses to cut ties with him.
During these years, I went through my own relationships, breaking up with an ex who used to be both of our good friend and then finding my current bf who, in no small terms, I consider the love of my life. But we haven’t had the smoothest relationship and whilst we were going through our issues, he spoke to his loved ones, and I spoke to my best friend for advice and to let out our emotions. We broke up for several months and during that time I went through utter heartbreak and my best friend was by my side through all of it. She’d also cut off her ex and said me and her can stay strong together.
A few months later me and my bf had a serious conversation and decided to forgive and move on as we genuinely like one another and share similar values and it seemed we were letting lots of miscommunication ruin things. My best friend wasn’t happy, and I’ve always felt like she thinks I betrayed her. She said she thinks my bf is stringing me along and his “true colours” will eventually come out. I think she’s projecting. I also find it maddening as I know if I spoke about her ex that way she’d jump to defend his “good parts”.
My bf and I have been happily dating since, we’ve both worked on our communication and have been putting in a lot of work. My best friend is still speaking on/off with her abusive ex and whenever she tells me about him, it’s always horrible things.
Recently my bf and I had a big break up, as I felt our cultural differences would be too difficult to overcome, was terrified of losing my community by sticking by him and thought it best to let him go for both of us. Heartbroken, I sought out my best friend for comfort who told me I’d done the right thing. However, I wasn’t convinced I had and spoke to other loved ones who told me that I should focus on my own happiness and not worry what others thought for “going against” my culture. I apologised profusely to my bf for my bad judgement, we once again spoke about everything and reiterated our love for each other and we have agreed to stand together against the potential difficulties we might face and I feel truly grateful and appreciative of him. I love him more than ever.
However, when I told my best friend this she was furious. She thinks I am using her as a back up plan (as she is who I thought of first when upset) and that I cancel on her for him. She thinks I am abandoning my culture and compromising who I am and what I believe for someone who she thinks will let me down, hurt me or eventually cause me a lot of pain. She says she is always there for me but the second I’m with my bf I forget about her.
I understand why she feels the way she does. But I also have lots of married friends/friends in serious relationships and though I don’t see them often my friendships with them have never suffered. With my best friend, I feel like if I don’t see her once per week or every two weeks, consistently, she thinks I’ve dropped her for a guy.
She’s amazing. She’s bright and beautiful but since knowing this guy she’s rejected an offer to get a postgrad, is working a min wage job despite having an excellent degree, doesn’t have any hobbies besides occasionally seeing friends for food and struggles with severe anxiety and depression. And I know she will never go anywhere as long as she keeps letting him pull her down.
I don’t know what to do or say anymore. I don’t want to say the harsh truth because I love her so much. But I don’t know how to say these things where she’ll listen. She’s convinced I’m blind about my bf and I’m certain it’s because she thinks my bf is like her abusive ex and we’re in the same situation. When it objectively speaking, isn’t the same at all. She keeps saying she doesn’t know what to do about her life or her ex but when I give suggestions just says “I will” and doesn’t do them.
I also think she misses when I was with my ex as she was his good friend too so the three of us often hung out together. But with my bf, she has decided he sucks without having ever met him and no damage control on my part about all his positives will change her mind. (She also thinks I’m covering up for his bad bits or that I’m saying good things about him as digs at her ex. It’s exhausting). I want to invite her to go along and do things with my bf and I and he has said the same, because they’d probably get along, but she won’t ever agree.
I don’t want to cut her off. But I’m worried she’ll drag me down. I’m worried this is going to be her life, and how can I share my happiness with her when she’s so angry and convinced I’m betraying her and myself for it?
Oh and we plan to go on holiday together just us two soon. I want to use it as a way for us to reconnect and let everything out. I hope I can find a way to do it without becoming the AH and be that bitch that left her friend for a man. Because right now it feels like that’s exactly what she thinks I’m doing.
