2024.05.14 15:56 SuddenTale1645 Outgrowing ground elder?

Hello!
We have some/a lot of ground elder growing under our boundary hedge and it’s making its way into our grass lawn. I have removed this a few times in the past year before realising what it was and researching its difficulty to get removed. Because if it’s location under a hedges, it’s quite difficult to get to remove it all, plus then relying on my neighbour to do the same… which they won’t.
I have looked into it. And it says there is the potential for ‘out growing’ it - aka putting larger plants which will overtake the growth. I can see what ‘large’ plants would work, but these are too large given it’s in a shady spot under a hedge. Does anyone have other suggestions that would work for us? Hostas?
Thanks!

'Jonathan Bailey doesn’t like to bare it all. But vulnerability fueled his best performance yet' - Jonny interview with the LA Times

“This is where all the cruising happened.”
Jonathan Bailey and I are standing in Pershing Square on a bright, blustery spring afternoon, nearing the end of a homemade queer history tour of downtown L.A.: One Magazine, Cooper Do-Nuts/Nancy Valverde Square, the Dover bathhouse, the Biltmore Hotel and this, the city’s former Central Park, a haven, since before World War I, for “fairies” and “sissy boys,” servicemen on leave and beatniks on the road.
“Is it still happening now?” he asks.
“Probably not as much,” I venture.
“Well, you let me know if it’s happening,” he teases, a mischievous smile lighting up his face.
Bailey understands the uses of the charm offensive. As Sam, the handsome Lothario of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s delightful pre-”Fleabag” curio, “Crashing”; Anthony, the romantic hero of “Bridgerton’s” second season; and John, the jerk of a protagonist in Mike Bartlett’s love triangle play “Cock,” the English actor, 36, has swaggered up to the precipice of superstardom. With roles in such studio tentpoles as “Wicked” and “Jurassic World” on the horizon, he may just break through. Yet he delivers career-best work in Showtime’s queer melodrama “Fellow Travelers,” as anti-Communist crusader-turned-gay rights activist Tim Laughlin, by leaving behind the self-assured rakes and tapping a new wellspring: soft power.
Tim may be, as Bailey puts it, “an open nerve,” but as it turns out, the devout Catholic and political naïf — who falls for suave State Department operative Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) just as Sen. Joseph McCarthy tries to purge the federal government of LGBTQ people — is formidable indeed.
Stretching from the Lavender Scare to the depths of the AIDS crisis, in scenes of tenderness, cruelty and toe-curling sex, Bailey’s performance communicates that little-spoken truth of relationships: It takes more strength to submit than it does to control. The former demands discipline, courage, trust; the latter requires only force.
“In ‘Bridgerton,’ [Bailey] is like a Hawkins Fuller character — he is very sexy and has lots of power, has that kind of confident charisma that absolutely is not Tim at all,” says “Fellow Travelers” creator Ron Nyswaner.
But any doubt about Bailey’s ability to mesh with Bomer, who boarded the project early in development, was put to bed with the actors’ virtual rehearsal of a meeting on a park bench in the pilot. “‘Well, that’s a first,’” Nyswaner recalls an executive texting him. “I cried in a chemistry read.”
‘Am I inviting people in?’
Bailey grew up in a musical family in the Oxfordshire countryside outside London, and this, coupled with an appreciation for the morning prayers, choir practice and Mass he attended as a scholarship student at the local Catholic school, fed his precocious talents. (“I loved the performance of it,” he laughs. “Not to diminish the celebration of religious process, but I did love the idea of wearing a gown.”) By age 10, he’d appeared in the West End, playing Gavroche in a production of “Les Misérables,” an experience he now recognizes as an encounter with a queer found family — albeit one shadowed by the toll of the AIDS crisis, which peaked in the U.K. in the mid-1990s.
“When I’m asked about my childhood, there’s so much I don’t remember, and I think that’s true of anyone who’s been in fight or flight for 20 years,” he says. “I would have been in a cast of people whose friends would have died in the last seven years. I think of where I was seven years ago. I had all my gay friends then. It’s only retrospectively that I can retrofit a real gay community around me [in the theater], that I just wasn’t aware of [then].”
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, American and British culture presented queer adolescents with a bewildering array of mixed signals. As beloved celebrities came out in growing numbers, and the battle for marriage equality became a central locus of LGBTQ political organizing, the media continued to propagate harmful stereotypes of gay men as miserable, lonely, perverted or worse — and, Bailey remembers, callously turned George Michael, arrested on suspicion of cruising in a Beverly Hills restroom in 1998, and Irish pop star Stephen Gately, who revealed his sexuality in 1999, fearful he was about to be outed, into tabloid spectacles.
No wonder Bailey, like many LGBTQ people of his generation, should feel the “chemical” thrill of “validation and acceptance” during London Pride at age 18, then embark on a two-year relationship with a woman in his 20s.
“Dangerously, if you’re not exposed to people who can show you other examples of happiness, you think that’s the easiest way to live,” Bailey says. “It’s funny. You look back and you can tell the story in one way, which is that I always knew who I was and my sexuality and my identity within that. But obviously at times, it was really tough. I compromised my own happiness, for sure. And compromised other people’s happiness.”
https://preview.redd.it/9q0vkj3djd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c631452122b5fb2c401e95352dcc0c21d54d0d7
Disclosures about his personal life have become particularly thorny for the actor since the premiere of “Bridgerton,” the blockbuster bodice-ripper from executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
“The Netflix effect does knock you off center completely,” he says, recalling the experience of finding a paparazzo waiting outside his new flat before he’d even moved in. “Suddenly, you do start having nightmares about people climbing in your windows... Even now, talking about it makes me feel like, ‘Am I inviting people in?’”
He is also critical of the media for churning out headlines about the smallest details of celebrities’ private lives, often detached from their original context. In an interview with the London Evening Standard published in December, Bailey described a harrowing encounter in a Washington, D.C., coffee shop in which a man threatened his life for being queer — and, in recounting the experience, offhandedly mentioned the “lovely man” he’d called, shaken, after it happened. Although Bailey acknowledges that the original story handled the subject with aplomb, he felt dismayed that more attention wasn’t paid to the intended warning about rising anti-LGBTQ sentiment: “The only thing that got syndicated from that story was that I had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t true,” he sighs. “It was kind of depressing, if I’m honest.”
Still, Bailey, who once turned down a role in a queer-themed TV series because it would have required him to speed along revelations about his personal life he wasn’t ready to make, is prepared to embrace the power of vulnerability when it feeds the work. Although a member of his inner circle expressed doubts about “Fellow Travelers’” steamy sex scenes, for instance, the actor intuited that they were what made the project worth doing: “I was like, ‘I’m telling you, they are the reason why this is going to be brilliant.’”
‘He’s changed my trajectory in my own life’
To those who would complain about the state of sex in film and TV, “Fellow Travelers” is the perfect riposte. All of it matters, from Tim’s first flirtation with Hawk to the finale’s closing minutes, because the series, at its core, is about the importance of soft power: the strength required to bend, but not break; to adapt, but not abandon oneself; to survive without shrinking to nothing in the process. And depicting that through sex, specifically gay sex, makes “Fellow Travelers” radical indeed.
Bailey understands that baring so much comes with certain risks. When I tell him that research for the story has filled my algorithmic “For You” feed on X (formerly Twitter) with speculation that his onscreen relationship with Bomer has a real-life element, he notes that “shipping” fictional couples and costars alike has long been part of Hollywood fantasy. But he bristles at the implication that he and Bomer are anything but skilled actors at work.
“I would love for people to know that the success of our chemistry isn’t based on us f—. It’s actually about us leaning into the craft,” he says. “It’s a vulnerable situation to be in, talking about it on record. I don’t want to rob people of their thoughts. But I do have a set of values, and as an artist, you don’t need to be f— to tell that love story.”
Underlying that craft, Bailey adds, is the confidence to speak up, as with one scene in “Fellow Travelers” that was adjusted because he said, “I don’t want to be naked today.” He learned to use his voice the hard way: In his early 20s, he recalls, he was once “bullied” on set when “someone was threatened” by him and vowed to himself, “I’m never going to do that to someone. I’m never going to allow that to happen."
https://preview.redd.it/4qwts4jrjd0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b9be4bb693aa886389f599b4e82c0f6a520be45
This impulse to direct his influence in support of others has blossomed further with “Fellow Travelers.” On the day of our interview, Bailey enthuses about an upcoming meeting with legendary gay rights activist Cleve Jones and shares his idea for a docuseries recording the stories of elders in the LGBTQ+ community while they are still here to tell them. He describes lying in a hospital bed on set on World AIDS Day, in character as Tim, surrounded by gay men who had lost friends and lovers during the crisis, and finding himself thinking, “What do I want to leave behind?”
“I think he’s changed my trajectory in my own life,” Bailey says.
This is, perhaps, the most common reaction I know to diving deep into queer history — the understanding that we, like our forerunners, are responsible for shaping the queer future, whether in politics, society or art. No one is going to do it on our behalf.
As we stand on the nondescript corner now named for her, I relate the story of the late queer activist Nancy Valverde, who was arrested repeatedly while a barber school student in the 1950s on suspicion of “masquerading” because of her preference for short hair and men’s clothing, and later successfully challenged her harassment by the police in court.
“What a hero!” Bailey exclaims, wondering at Valverde’s bravery. “The thing that’s so interesting with power battles is, ultimately, identity is the thing that gives you the most strength and power in your life, isn’t it?
“Because that’s one thing people can’t take away from you: who you are and how you express yourself."

original: After completing all research upgrades and unlocking Elder Pledge, it is recommended for active players to use Elder Pledge to disable the Grandmapocalypse. This will bring back golden cookies, allowing players to perform combos. Idle players, on the other hand, should leave the Grandmapocalypse active. Idle players can benefit from wrinklers by leaving them for a long time and then popping them if one needs a large amount of cookies to make a big purchase. As wrinklers, when popped, give more cookies than they leeched, having all 10 wrinklers feeding on the Big Cookie results in a net CpS multiplier of 6x. While this is extremely powerful to idle players, this is not worth it for active players as having the Grandmapocalypse enabled makes combos much harder as wrath cookies spawn instead of golden cookies, outweighing the benefits that the Grandmapocalypse provides. (source: wiki FAQ page)
google translated a bunch of times: After all quests are updated and the main gateway is opened, players using the main gateway will be prompted to opt out. GrandMapocalypse also gives players golden cookies to collect. Unauthorized players should avoid them. The girl agrees. Passive players can use Vault to spend more time and open more cookies if they need to buy more. When the bone is broken, it gives the cookie more room to breathe. Eating a large cookie every 10 times increases CPS by 6 times, but is good for passive players. But it is not suitable for active players. It will be hard to watch because of the Grand Apocalypse event. Because a pie of pain is more impressive than a pie of gold. That's enough for the grandapocalypse.

2024.05.14 07:46 ThusSpakeChase Never thought I'd be here

I lost my soul dog of 14 years, a Rottie mix, in March. I raised her from 8 weeks and we were inseparable. My lifestyle consists of hiking, camping, backpacking, and generally being outdoors, and she was up for all of it.
Two months after losing her I started to feel like I'm ready to start again, so I began researching and gearing up for a new puppy. A few weeks later I met a scruffy little 14 week old terrier mix at a rescue and felt an instant connection with her. Her foster had her for three weeks and described her as confident, outgoing, and smart.
I'm now three weeks into the adoption and I regret to say that I haven't felt a bond with her since that first day. She's so skittish and on guard all the time that she won't play or accept treats anywhere except inside my apartment. She's terrified to go on walks and can't even relax in the backyard. She acts like there's a monster outside the fence. I've not forced her, and I've done everything I know to do as far as positive association and gentle introductions. She's just constantly worried about something and she's so independent that she doesn't look to me for comfort or guidance, and that's making bonding tough. I feel like I don't have a companion, and that's what I really need in a dog. I also realize now that I've gotten a puppy way too soon after losing my girl and I can't help but compare them.
On top of everything, my elderly cat passed away of kidney failure today. He was very old and had kidney disease for years, but I can't help but feel that the stress of a new puppy in the house played a part, and that makes me feel really guilty.
Now I'm considering returning the puppy to the rescue because she's not a good fit and I feel like a failure and a terrible person. She's good in so many ways: smart, doesn't nip, crate and potty trained in a few days.. I'm just struggling to bond and I don't think she's happy with me and doesn't seem like she'll be able to enjoy my lifestyle of camping and hiking. I think she would benefit from living with other dogs because she doesn't seem to get much comfort from her human. Has anyone else been in this situation or had thoughts like this? Do you think it's valid to consider rehoming her after three weeks?

The last poll conducted on October 28th had Smith leading by 1 point, and Kennedy far behind both major candidates. Some have already begun to blame the Liberal Party and Kennedy for stealing moderate voters from another Republican victory. First 100 Days

Revenue Act of 1965
The Revenue Act of 1965 would take a more progressive approach to taxation, increasing income taxes up to 7% in the highest tax bracket; all while lowering income taxes down by 4% for lower income households. The Act would also increase the Social Security Tax to 8%.
House voted 228-207
Senate voted 52-48
Mass Transit Tax Act of 1965
The second Mass Transit Tax Act would lower short range rail and air transport by an average of 5%, while increasing long range rail and air transport by an average of 2%. International flight tickets would be increased as well, by an average of 6%.
House voted 236-199
Senate voted 62-38
Minimum Wage Act of 1965
The long-standing federal Minimum Wage of $0.80/hour has been around since 1949, with no increase on the federal side of things. President Jackson and other Laborites were able to pull their weight and increase the federally-mandated minimum wage to $1.30/hour. Although the Labor Party advocated for a higher hourly wage, others in Congress feared a wage any higher would result in another economic panic following the near-collapse of the National Debt Ceiling a few years prior.
House voted 227-208
Senate voted 52-48
Department of Health Foundation Act of 1965
Founded the Department of Health and Welfare to help administer and regulate various healthcare practices and the distribution of Social Security, medical tax breaks, and more. Though indirectly, Congress soon changes the Executive budget to cut the Department of the Interior's funding by 40%; most of that money going into the new Department of Health and Welfare.
House voted 249-186
Senate voted 64-36
National Environmental and Water Policy Act of 1965 (NEWPA)
Championed heavily by the President and young members of the Labor Party in Congress like Edmund Muskie, NEWPA places greater regulations and laws into place regarding water safety and treatment, water pollution, trash allocation, dump sites, and recycling; unseen since the progressive era of the early 1900s. These regulations are expected to greatly improve the environmental state of decay for decades to come.
House voted 221-214
Senate voted 54-46

Death of former President, Theodore F. Green: May 19, 1966

This morning, former President Theodore Francis Green passed away in his Rhode Island home at the age of 98, marking the oldest President at the time of his death. Green was a member of the Democratic Party and briefly the Anti-Fascist Alliance, taking charge from his previous position as Secretary of State after the sudden assassinations of sitting President Earl Browder and Vice President Upton Sinclair. President Green helped uncover the “Business Plot” orchestrated in part by J.P. Morgan Jr. and Prescott Sheldon Bush Sr, the latter being the father of sitting Texas Congressman George Bush.
President Theodore F. Green led us through the horrors of the second world war after the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor, resigning his post and organizing a special election the year following the conclusion of the war itself. He was instrumental in the foundation of the United Nations and eventual foundation of both NATO and EATO two Presidents later. He was, and still remains a national hero in our hearts. President Henry Jackson, among former Presidents and dignitaries are expected to show up for his public funeral in Providence, Rhode Island. The public has been allowed to pay their respects at his grave site before his proper burial et to take place from May 19 at 9:00 AM to May 20 at 9:00 AM.

Foreign Policy Ventures prior to the 1966 Midterms

Embargo Act of 1965
Supported already by the majority of the country, Scoop Jackson directed Congress to pass a full embargo of all raw and manufactured Cuban goods on entering the United States through any port or checkpoint.
House voted 313-122
Senate voted 76-24
With the law being signed by the President in August that year, he would make a speech in Miami celebrating the passage of the act, glorifying its protections of American, anti-communist goods. Scoop would face some backlash over his anti-communist posturing, as the Labor Party has a small (but noticeable) sect of Communists in their ranks.
The Saigon Summit
In July of 1965, after riots against the French government in Saigon, and the breakout of a guerrilla war in French Cambodia, a summit was called in Saigon to determine the future of the city. President Jackson, President Ho Chi Minh, and President Charles de Gaulle met within the French administrative building to discuss the recent riots in the city and future between Saigon and Vietnam. Although much of Vietnam was granted total independence from French rule in 1950, French Saigon remained a thorn in Vietnam's side. France wished to keep as much of its dying empire as possible, and no one would fight harder at that than Charles de Gaulle himself. President Jackson wished to keep the peace and eventually coerce Vietnam into rejoining EATO.
Talks were messy at times, as yelling could be heard from the chambers the talks were being held in, but the three would come to an agreement. Saigon would be administered by a joint Vietnamese-French government, and policing and law would gradually transition to local and Vietnamese systems. In return, Vietnam would promise to not get itself involved in the Cambodian guerilla war.

In December 1966, a clash between Vietnamese and French police during a riot led the Vietnamese side of the Saigon Transitional Government to call on Vietnamese military aid. Within hours, the Republic of Vietnam marched into the jointly occupied city. Rumors immediately began amassing that the Saigon police force worked with the Vietnamese government in order to cease Saigon before the transitional period was up. Although these rumors were just that, President Jackson was surely worried when the news hit him the next morning; alongside the French Ambassador asking for an audience with the President.
French Ambassador Hervé Alphand would share with Scoop three things:
  1. France intends to treat the invasion of Saigon as an act of war.
  2. France is already mobilizing troops to southern Cambodia for a naval invasion of Vietnam.
  3. France intends to call on the force of NATO and EATO to defend “France in her hour of need.”
No matter how Jackson tried to argue, Alphand was keen on these points. Jackson would argue that the incident be investigated by the United Nations to determine whether it was an act of war; while Alphand threatened that American delay on the issue could lead to French withdrawal from both NATO and EATO. Jackson, reportedly furious, refused to be threatened by a “dying empire”. He denied meeting with any French foreign dignitary for the time being until they promised to allow the UN for an investigation.
The French response was quick, with France officially leaving both NATO and EATO on December 18, 1966. The French declaration of war and further campaign into Vietnam began on the 20th. With naval and air landings concentrated around Rach Gia, Can Tho, My Tho, Saigon, and Vung Tau, the Second Indochina War began. Although Australia would provide weapon assistance, the other nations within both NATO and EATO held their breath on what to do. France had left the two most powerful military and economic alliances in the world, and President Jackson could not be more angry.

Glasgow Conference of 1967

With the war having gone on for nearly three months, and French military forces having begun to get bogged down by the Vietnamese harsh tactics; Can Tho remained the only major French-held territory in the young Republic. And although Vietnamese war tactics were questionable at best; much of the world was united in believing the French declaration of war was not entirely justifiable; with President Scoop Jackson and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev at the forefront of organizing peace efforts within and without the UN. Although the United Nations have begun investigations into both the Vietnamese invasion of Saigon and the French declaration of war, they both had gotten bogged down by the surrounding war effort.
It was agreed upon by several major powers to meet in Glasgow with French and Vietnamese delegates to discuss an armistice. The United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and the People’s Republic of China agreed to enforce the following terms:
  1. Saigon and surrounding territories that formerly made up the French Vietnam Territory following the 1950 Treaty of Manila shall be ceded to the Republic of Vietnam. Saigon and the surrounding territories shall become a United Nations sponsored demilitarized zone until an official peace treaty between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
  2. French military and bureaucratic personnel shall be allowed free and safe passage out of the cities of Can Tho and Saigon; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. The French and Vietnamese governments must release all prisoners of war; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force.
  3. Saigon officials implicated in the initial invasion of the city on December 16, 1966 must release all official, personal, and private documents to the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs for investigation.
  4. Vietnam must retain its promise from the 1964 Saigon Summit to not aid or abet Cambodian guerilla forces or rebels.
  5. All combat between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam shall cease and abide by the above rules, the United Nations, and Geneva Conventions.
Although both nations had much to say and change in their favor, the above is the final version of the armistice agreed upon by all parties. The armistice paper was signed by:
  • President Henry Martin Jackson of the United States
  • General Secretary Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev of the Soviet Union
  • Prime Minister James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx of the United Kingdom
  • Chairman Mao Zedong of the People's Republic of China
  • Foreign Minister Ernest Charles Lucet of the 5th French Republic
  • Foreign Minister Nguyên Duy Trinh of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Military Aftermath of the Second Indochina War:
  • 57,000 KIA (66% Vietnamese)
  • 12,000 MIA (81% French)
  • 72,000 WIA (52% French)
  • 134,000 Civilians KIA/MIA (89% Vietnamese)
Although the Glasgow Conference was seen as a great triumph of diplomacy between the major powers, Taiwan (the Republic of China) was greatly hindered in its geopolitical influence for the time being. President Jackson had recognized the People’s Republic of China the week prior to the Conference; Communist China would replace Taiwan's spot as a permanent member of the UN Security Council within the month.

The Better Society Plan

Plans drawn up between Pro Tempore Lyndon Johnson, Representative Claude Pepper, and Speaker Adam Powell Jr. would be taken to the President's desk following the first relatively calm year in the administration's history. Although much of the work on marketing the plan would be placed on Scoop himself; Johnson, Pepper, and Powell would act as the main sponsors of each piece in Congress. What would become the beginnings of the “Better Society Plan” would officially pass both houses of Congress throughout mid 1968.
Cheap Food and Housing Act of 1968
A large bill authored primarily by Speaker Adam Powell Jr. and Secretary Hubert Humphrey; the Cheap Food and Housing Act would cover extensive social programs. Although, with weak support in Congress, many Republicans were able to push to soften these programs and add their own agendas on top of them. The final contents of this massive bill were as follows:
  1. A federal Food Stamps program would begin and be administered and funded by the Department of Health and Welfare. Certain imported foodstuffs would receive a 15% higher tariff. All American citizens that either fall below or are less than 6% above the poverty line would be eligible for the Food Stamps program.
  2. Store-bought meat products will receive price controls to fit the monthly income of the average family. The Federal Government will cut 60% funds toward GMO Agriculture, Meat, Fish, and Poultry research.
  3. Houses that take up less than a certain area size will be price capped based county-by-county income. This job is in the hands of State Governments. (Apartments are not covered in this)
  4. Housing discrimination shall be made illegal based on identity.
House voted 241-194
Senate voted 53-47
Medical Bill Reduction Act of 1968
This bill was authored by Representative Claude Pepper and Secretary John Gardner in order to fundamentally reduce medical expenses for the youth, elderly, and medically unable. The bill however was weakened significantly by the Republicans in Congress, only allowing for those receiving Social Security benefits to have reduced medical expenses paid for partially by the Department of Health and Welfare; no matter if the recipient is signed on with private insurance or the Public Option.
House voted 220-215
Senate voted 53-47

Apollo 8: Americans on the Moon in November 1968!

Thanks to streamlined efforts by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Margaret Smith the past 11 years, NASA and furthermore America were able to place the first men on the moon on November 12, 1967. In a speech made on national television that night in the hour following the conclusion of the live coverage of the moon landing, Scoop Jackson would put much of his thanks on the “Greatest mind our nation has ever had,” referring to Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer, since 1961, has been placed in a secondary charge of the Apollo missions and a potential moon landing until his resignation in January 1967 and death the following month. Dr. Oppenheimer's expertise in theory and former President Smith's dedication for space exploration are likely candidates as to the victory America achieved that night.

The United Nations has concluded their investigation into the potential legality and coercion in the events leading up to the invasion of Saigon.
“While France has made compelling arguments for the contrary, regarding available documents and other pieces of evidence, the Vietnamese military occupation of Saigon was not a result of coercion, manipulation, embezzlement, bribery, or corruption within the Republic of Vietnam. The invitation of Vietnamese armed forces into the territory limits was done by the legal Vietnamese co-government of said territory, and therefore, is deemed a semi-legal occupation of the city. The United Nations upholds the results of the Glasgow Conference.”

Gearing up for Reelection: A look at Potential Challengers

Notable Republicans that have declared candidacy
Former Vice President, Richard Nixon
https://preview.redd.it/s64vumfxub0d1.jpg?width=3739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bff3f91005f9ed3559abb1334db75eac181ae75
Richard Nixon is back at it with his 4th attempt at a Presidential run, and if he wins the nomination or is selected as a running mate, 3rd attempt on a Presidential ticket. He is generally a moderate, but is definitely the wildcard. Despite his past of losing elections, he is somehow the safest, and perhaps most dangerous, to the Jackson administration.
Governor Ronald Reagan
https://preview.redd.it/bjb887w4vb0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cdd34a9a2caf74d4b7b2a18233bc141bc975e20
The Governor of California has perhaps one of the most charismatic voices in the nation, and is definitely a threat should he receive the Republican nomination. While he is charismatic, he is also the most Conservative of the major players for the Republican nomination. Reagan has instituted a mix of conservative and liberal policy as Governor of California, but has spouted rhetoric like all the former dixiecrats; just without blatant racism. Scoop believes Reagan is not only a credible threat to his Presidency, but also a threat to minority groups nationwide.
“Draft Jack Kennedy” and “Draft Bobby Kennedy”
https://preview.redd.it/s601w5x9vb0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b99970534ba3ec17d1e7147231d0b5b45ad22e3
Despite neither Kennedy having decided to throw their hat in the ring this year, 1960 and 1964 Presidential candidate John Kennedy has received some support among anti-nixon moderates for the head of the ticket later this year. He has an air of charisma around him, much like his fellow Republican Ronald Reagan, but Kennedy has only commented on the matter stating he is “far too tired” for 3 Presidential runs in a row. The Senator's health is seemingly beginning to fail, as well. Despite the unlikeliness of the matter, Jackson is prepared to deal with Jack Kennedy again if he wins a draft.
Opposed to his older brother, Governor Robert Kennedy has remained Non-Partisan since the fall of the Liberal Party 3 years prior. Bobby has had moderate support from both parties since the beginning of his governorship in 1963. Despite this, and probably with wishes to go against one of his brothers, Bobby Kennedy has denied to run or entertain a draft movement in his name. Scoop has declared Bobby to be of little threat.
Other potential challengers
Senator Russel Long
https://preview.redd.it/vazyz7xevb0d1.jpg?width=223&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4693e838065dc8a3f31cf21f5d3cb8bece24dfc6
The long-serving Senator and son of former President Huey Long has walked the line of conservative, liberal, and progressive support throughout his career. In recent years, he has become more supportive of progressive social policies, and definitely leans economically toward Labor; but his reach across rural southerners matches a more populist approach. Long has already declared his independent candidacy for President. If Nixon isn't one, Long is certainly the most dangerous wildcard if he plays his hand right. Scoop will closely watch him.

I’m a relative newbie here, practicing on and off for the past three years. I’m working on another grimoire and want some advice on what to include. I’ll update with the more I learn but version 1.0 is going to include a more manageable mount of information.
I’m nordic pagan, reaching out into more general “witchy” things. I mostly pray and offer food on my altar but don’t do much more than read runes for others.

2024.05.14 05:22 massconstellation story of my poor cousin sister...

felt i had to share this once i found this sub, don't know if anyone has been in similar situation. any advice or consolation would be appreciated.
so i have these 2 cousin sisters, who are both my mama's daughters. There is a 4 year age gap between them. The older one has wanted to be a doctor since she was little, and she has always been a bright student. She gave her first NEET attempt and somehow missed cutoff by just few marks (gen category). her parents can afford private college and advised her to go but she was worried about stigma and convinced that she could get govt college easily after taking one year drop.
somehow each subsequent attempt she has been scoring a bit lower than her previous attempts. i don't know if its nervousness, anxiety, or what. her confidence got lower and lower, and her parents still tried convincing for pvt college but she wouldn't listen. the really unfortunate part of the story comes last year. her sister (who had no previous interest in medicine, wanted to go for research/phd) decided on a whim to study a bit and give neet during her 12th. and guess what? she cracked it on first try! it was during the same year that her elder sister was giving 5th consecutive neet attempt.
and since then there is so much tension in their household. the previously close sisters do not even talk to each other anymore (from what i heard they have barely spoken since the neet scores came out last year). my mama mami are just so torn about it. on one hand they are happy for their younger daughter, but they are also so scared for their older daughter because she seems mentally broken. my mom talks to my mama every week, and they are worried that their older daughter may take wrong step. no idea where to go from here.

2024.05.14 05:20 JoshuaSingh11 Scientific studies on mercury and adverse effects

  1. A Cross-Sectional Study of Blood Ethylmercury Levels and Cognitive Decline Among Older Adults and the Elderly in the United States
    • "Significantly increased risks for lower animal fluency test (odds ratio (OR) = 13.652, p = 0.0029) and CERAD W-L delayed recall test (OR = 6.401, p = 0.0433) scores were observed among the higher ethyl-Hg exposure group as compared to the lower ethyl-Hg exposure group. This study supports the hypothesis that increased ethyl-Hg exposure is associated with significant cognitive decline in older adult and elderly Americans."
  2. Thimerosal-Derived Ethylmercury Is a Mitochondrial Toxin in Human Astrocytes: Possible Role of Fenton Chemistry in the Oxidation and Breakage of mtDNA
    • "Ethylmercury causes a 50% collapse in membrane potential in astrocytes at 1 hour. Accompanying this collapse in membrane potential we observe a significant increase in the levels of various ROS. The internal mitochondrial steady state level of superoxide increases by 70% in treated cells and is matched by an increase in cellular hydrazine reactive carbonyls. Using H2DCF-AM we observe a 200% increase in steady state production of reactive oxidants, which from deconvolution we know to be mitochondrially generated (Figure 2). Mitochondrial DNA, and not nuclear DNA, is far more vulnerable to ethylmercury-induced damage. We observe a 240% increase in the levels of mitochondrial DNA breaks, a 300% increase in 3′OH DNA nicks and 460% increase in the levels of oxidized bases/apurinic or apyrimidinic sites"
    • "At higher concentrations (>7.2 μM Thimerosal) a loss of mitochondrial signal and of DCF is observed."
  3. The relationship between mercury and autism: A comprehensive review and discussion
    • "This review found 91 studies that examine the potential relationship between mercury and ASD from 1999 to February 2016. Of these studies, the vast majority (74%) suggest that mercury is a risk factor for ASD, revealing both direct and indirect effects. The preponderance of the evidence indicates that mercury exposure is causal and/or contributory in ASD."
  4. Examining the evidence that ethylmercury crosses the blood-brain barrier
    • "22 studies from 1971 to 2019 show that exposure to ethylmercury-containing compounds (intravenously, intraperitoneally, topically, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intranasally administered) results in accumulation of mercury in the brain. In total, these studies indicate that ethylmercury-containing compounds and Thimerosal readily cross the BBB, convert, for the most part, to highly toxic inorganic mercury-containing compounds, which significantly and persistently bind to tissues in the brain, even in the absence of concurrent detectable blood mercury levels."
  5. Comparison of blood and brain mercury levels in infant monkeys exposed to methylmercury or vaccines containing thimerosal
    • "These studies indicate that ethylmercury-containing compounds and Thimerosal readily cross the BBB, convert, for the most part, to highly toxic inorganic mercury-containing compounds, which significantly and persistently bind to tissues in the brain, even in the absence of concurrent detectable blood mercury levels."
    • "The results indicate that MeHg is not a suitable reference for risk assessment from exposure to thimerosal-derived Hg. Knowledge of the toxicokinetics and developmental toxicity of thimerosal is needed to afford a meaningful assessment of the developmental effects of thimerosal-containing vaccines."
    • "The average concentration of inorganic Hg did not change across the 28 days of washout and was approximately 16 ng/mL (Figure 7). This level of inorganic Hg represented 21–86% of the total Hg in the brain (mean ± SE, 70 ± 4%), depending on the sacrifice time. These values are considerably higher than the inorganic fraction observed in the brain of MeHg monkeys (6–10%)."
    • "Absolute inorganic Hg concentrations in the brains of the thimerosal-exposed monkeys were approximately twice that of the MeHg monkeys."
  6. Exposure to Inorganic Mercury Causes Oxidative Stress, Cell Death, and Functional Deficits in the Motor Cortex
    • "It was observed that chronic exposure to inorganic mercury caused a decrease in balance and fine motor coordination, formation of mercury deposits and oxidative stress verified by the increase of lipoperoxidation and nitrite concentration and a decrease of the total antioxidant capacity. In addition, we found that this model of exposure to inorganic mercury caused cell death by cytotoxicity and induction of apoptosis with a decreased number of neurons and astrocytes in the motor cortex. Our results provide evidence that exposure to inorganic mercury in low doses, even in spite of its poor ability to cross biological barriers, is still capable of inducing motor deficits, cell death by cytotoxicity and apoptosis, and oxidative stress in the motor cortex of adult rats."
  7. The retention time of inorganic mercury in the brain--a systematic review of the evidence
    • "Estimates from modelling studies appear sensitive to model assumptions, however predications based on a long half-life (27.4 years) are consistent with autopsy findings. In summary, shorter estimates of half-life are not supported by evidence from animal studies, human case studies, or modelling studies based on appropriate assumptions. Evidence from such studies point to a half-life of inorganic mercury in human brains of several years to several decades. This finding carries important implications for pharmcokinetic modelling of mercury and potentially for the regulatory toxicology of mercury."
  8. Astrocytes in the central nervous system and their functions in health and disease: A review
    • "Because astrocytes contain metal-binding proteins such as metallothionein, they are also involved in the uptake and sequestration of some heavy metals."
  9. Proximal tubular transport of Metallothionein-Mercury complexes and protection against nephrotoxicity
    • "MT has a very high affinity for Hg; thus, mercuric ions that are not already bound to MT may bind to MT within the cytoplasm to form large Hg-MT complexes that may be retained in the cell. This will be particularly true in segments of proximal tubules that have higher levels of MT, i.e., cortical proximal tubules. MT is capable of binding 6–11 molecules of Hg (He et al., 2021); thus, it is logical that cells and tissues with higher levels of MT will accumulate more Hg."

2024.05.14 04:11 Ur_Anemone It’s time feminists started listening to men

It’s time feminists started listening to men
Feminism’s foe is supposed to be the middle-aged guy railing at his TV for showing ladies’ bloody football or, worse, letting women commentate on a men’s game. The dinner-on-the-table, girlie-calendar-on-the-wall world he grew up with has been swept away. Poor baffled, angry old fool.
Younger men raised by working mothers to see female classmates and colleagues as equals are thought to breezily accept feminism’s gains. Except this week research by King’s College London showed a quarter of British males aged 16 to 29 believe it is harder now to be a man than woman — and they are more likely than their boomer dads to believe feminism does more harm than good.
A global trend is emerging among adults under 30 that the academics Rosie Campbell and Alice Evans call “gendered ideological polarisation”. From South Korea to Spain, young women increasingly support liberal political parties while their male peers are more likely to vote conservative or populist. Older men and women’s voting patterns, however, still largely align.
So what is dividing young people? Most critiques focus on how the sexes now live in different social media bubbles: girls on Instagram and TikTok, boys drawn to “manosphere” gurus like Andrew Tate, the alleged sex trafficker eagerly exploiting angry, disaffected boys who can’t get laid.
Yet could young women and men diverge politically because each is pursuing their material best interests? Told to #bekind and empathetic, no wonder young women are drawn to liberal parties that promise to care for migrants and the poor. But their support is not entirely altruistic. Progressives offer what they need: state-funded childcare, an end to the gender pay gap, equality legislation and campaigns against male violence such as MeToo.
In the hierarchy of oppression preached by progressive politics “the last shall come first and the first shall come last”. At its apex are women, people of colour and the ever-expanding LGBTQ+ “community”. A straight, white guy is at the very bottom. Most young men I know shrug off or joke about their “privilege”. But for lost boys struggling to find a foothold, or those who’ve never felt alpha at all, it must be a slap in the face to learn your needs are not just invalid but that you’re an embodiment of “toxic masculinity”. Why vote for a party that calls you the problem?
“This is the best time in history to be a woman,” says Evans. Undoubtedly true. The Labour Party has dropped all-women shortlists now female MPs are a majority in the PLP. Women have never been safer in childbirth. Once girls are allowed education, they always exceed boys: globally, 100 women are in higher education for every 88 men. From astronauts to prime minister, there is no male bastion women haven’t breached. Female empowerment is celebrated. You go, girl!
Evans is right that gender equality is not a “zero sum game” — realising women’s potential has economic benefits for all — but coldly, objectively this not the best time in history to be a man. At work he must compete with women for preferment, at home he can’t expect the full wifely domestic service. (Older men are more relaxed about feminism, I suspect, because it hasn’t harmed their lifestyle.) Plus what gender barriers do men have to break? Where are the plaudits and “you go, boy!” for being a stay-at-home dad or caring for your elderly mum?
Evans notes that one reason for gender divergence is a “feminised public culture” and cites the book industry where a predominantly female staff publish mainly female writers to serve female readers. The Royal Society of Literature website boasts about its “queefemale-led team”, hardly welcoming to a young man toiling over his first draft.
Yet the feminised sphere now extends into teaching, academia, medicine and the legal profession. Even if you greet this as progress, it is facile to suggest men have lost nothing. And what irks younger males is still being hammered about “privilege” by confident, successful female peers.
I realise I can only write this because I’m a woman, a feminist even. (Few male colleagues would dare.)
Failing to address specific male issues won’t make women’s lives better; indeed it only breeds misogyny and wider misery. Countries with the widest gender polarisation have the lowest birth rates.
In South Korea, where men retain traditional sexist ideas while wallowing in modern online porn culture, young women now sign pledges not to marry or even date. A riven society is a loveless one.
Yet to raise under-attainment of working-class boys makes you a men’s rights activist; ask if fatherless black boys are drawn to gangs and you’re racist. Every man who speaks to the modern male condition must be another Andrew Tate. Jordan Peterson’s initial 12 rules merely told young men to stand up straight and that tidying your room or stroking a cat could bring structure and joy to seemingly meaningless lives. Now Peterson is demonised.
From the female standpoint it looks as if everything men enjoy is either mocked or condemned. A group of blokes going fishing must be saddos avoiding their wives: a stag-do must be a drunken, red-light crawl, but a hen night is an uproarious female bonding trip. The only acceptable men-only spaces now are gyms and, as Helen Lewis said on her Radio 4 New Gurus programme, blokey podcasts thrive because they serve the hunger for banter once satisfied in the pub.
Is it harder to be a man than a woman now? In some senses, yes. And if this is how a quarter of young guys feel, instead of demonising or dismissing them, we need to find out why.

2024.05.14 03:19 Kooky-Recognition28 Miya's Law in Florida: Background Checks/Consent Forms/Key Logs?

Hi! My family has owned a quaint roadside motel in Florida for many decades, with 35 rooms and a small crew of employees. I am the third generation, but only recently involved with this property, so please forgive if I sound like a noob. We are property owners, not hotel operators, however there happened to be a motel on this property and in this one case we have always owned the motel business and managed it from afar.
First Question: I am looking for a background check company that does not have a minimum annual number of checks, whose level 2 checks are specific to Miya's Law. Recommendations, or at least point me in the right direction? (I'm new to the group, I hope that question does not fall under "market research." Don't ban me!) We haven't hired anyone new in a while, so the news of the passing of Miya's Law in the state of FL sort of came and went, also the entire ownership family lives out of state so we definitely missed the memo about the new law. We suddenly had to hire 3 new employees recently and we have to run Level 2 background checks on them to be compliant with the new law. We only have a handful of employees, and I can't foresee having to run more than 2-3 background checks per year.
Second question: Does anyone have a link or a shareable form for applicants/employees to use to sign for informed consent to run a background check? I have spent all day scouring every corner of the internet and coming up empty. There has to be SOMETHING. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Third question: Miya's law also requires key logs. We are a small motel with actual keys to the doors. We have one housekeeper who obviously enters rooms all the time, and we have one maintenance worker who enters rooms only as needed which is not often, and then we have a few front desk workers who have access to all the keys but do not go in rooms. What's the best way, in actual practice, to have a key log that isn't a burden on the employees? If it's easy to log, then they'll be most likely to keep doing it, right?
Can you help please? Thank you
Anyone who is outside of FL and is now curious about Miya's Law, you can google Miya Marcano and Miya's Law Florida 2023 and you'll get the gist. Level 2 background checks include, but are not limited to, state and federal checks with a 7 year lookback period for convictions of crimes that are violent, fraudulent, abusive or negligent against children, the elderly or other vulnerable populations.

[Death and Asteroids] The Republic of Prometheus: A light in the dark or an inferno
Some quick memes to give an idea of their culture and broader actions
From the flames of Prometheus rises Mankind forged anew
“Hear the sum of the whole matter in the compass of one brief word — every art possessed by man comes from Prometheus.”
The History of the Promethean Republic was one born out of tragedy as millions looked onwards into space in shuttles to the outerworlds of UN colonized space with the promise of new life and settlement freshly dripping from their ears. When they arrived they were betrayed by these honeyed words as enmasse they were enslaved and subjected to mutilation and augmentation on a scale never before seen. The cries of millions silenced by the chatters of trillions of others in the stars.
These betrayed were historians, mothers, fathers and scientists hoping to explore new frontiers only to be subjected to this by corrupt or rogue UN governors and industrialists looking to make a quick buck off of an “efficient” work force. They hoped to scrape away their free will and ability to rebel and leave only obedient and subservient “automatons” who while less physically capable than the cheaper robot would be more adaptive. Amongst those who betrayed them however was a man known as “Charon” who horrified at the deeds of his fellows set out to right what went wrong and bring the millions of people annihilated back.
He would succeed but not in his lifetime as the title was merely one passed on to others like him. The various Charons subtly sifted through code and memories to try and identify what little he could bring back. It took the Galactic civil war between the LIS and UN to give them the right time to act. And so the cyborgs arose unleashing a massacre not seen since the French Revolution upon their slave masters after decades of encountering others they would realize that humanity was unlike them having retained their flesh and minds while also unwilling to accept them back into the fold.
So emerged the Republic of Prometheus which would stand as the Cyborgs attempted to recover what they could of themselves and others. Some had awoken from their slavery to find their young children they took with them on their trip dead killed by their unrepentant slave drivers who saw little use or thrown into orphanages by the few with any semblance of a moral compass. Many tears were shed as children fled from their mangled parents and their steel husks as they said a rambling name that sounded semi-intelligible for their own. Prometheans disgraced and horrified vowed to stay in isolation in the hopes that maybe their children would have been better off without them.
A myth of the “Republic of the Dead” emerged as the centuries went on of a region of space where the dead still walked.
The prometheans eventually began to rebuild themselves and forge a new society one built around some semblance of patriotism and liberty. Eventually they developed from their faulty memories and eventually their own capabilities means of communication amongst each other via cybernetics with that the need for election dissipated as referendums took their place. The Prometheians could be regarded as of now as either the first cyber-democracy or perhaps a democratic technocracy.
This would not dissipate as they founded their state religion, the cult of Libertas. By this point Charon and Prometheus had merged in their minds as one being with Prometheus developing into god in their eyes as the one who struck down betrayers and uphold oaths. By this point of course Charon had long perished having left to his home planet after the insurrection. Prometheus is a loving albeit harsh father who intends to force humanity to advance as one and despises “parasites” who prey on the week and advance only for themselves.
He did leave them three principles: -The Principle of Spartacus(Unity), which was to uphold and embrace all members into their community in exchange for fully loyalty. It has also been interpreted as communal openness or universal brotherhood. -The Principle of Brown(Liberation), to end injustice wherever it may be and to liberate the people. It has also been interpreted as loyalty to god’s equality. -The Principle of Prometheus(Knowledge), the easiest to understand is to actively study the world both scientific, historical and cultural as well as to disseminate it beyond.
While on paper positive the cult has by this point expanded to mandate cybernetics, worship of the three principles and universal mandatory service as well as a notoriously loose code of ethics. Notably including hiding information regarding medical research from participants till after the study has occurred, coercion via pay and even including prisoner coercion. When questioned they would merely state the individual has no free will as no man has accomplished anything by themselves with deviations from community norms often shunned. There is also the issue of the void whom many have started to regard as the personification of Prometheus to be freed while others denounce it as the being that had brought this corruption to the world and must remain imprisoned as per its punishment.
It is not without its progress as work on stem cells previously slowed by regulation and cybernetics have exploded leading to a population regarded by many as technically immortal and without pain. Food is surprisingly abundant thanks to advances in Hydroponics and lower demand thanks to how far some augmented have went.
The army is entirely adhoc largely composed of self-funded and organized militia charged with rooting out slavery, banditry and hostile forces at home. They would often engage in expeditions with state approval to liberate planets dominated by slavers and leave after transitioning power to the oppressed albeit often with a hefty booty of loot. These newly liberated planets deemed to be in the Promethean security network would find themselves guaranteed by the Republic and offered annexation at a later date pending referendum. However in case of invasion or an offensive war the state bureaucracy following a referendum authorizing it would select a Supreme Commander who would then select his subordinates who would then assume control of the various militias.
Politically the dominant faction is the isolationists but two increasingly vocal interventionist factions have emerged: The Blues and Greens. Blues support a diplomatic approach gradually uniting the various planets underneath a cybernetic democracy and supplying technology as well as economic aid to develop them and build goodwill. Greens view humanity has squandered their inheritance and that their “elders” must take charge to guide them back to glory at all cost.
Glory to Prometheus, Spartacus and Brown!

I tried to stay positive but it’s gotten worse, I think… (lamictal induced?)
November 2023 / January 2024/ March 2024/ May 2024
I didn’t know if posting this update was a good idea but I want to be as transparent as possible going through this journey with you all. My hair started to shed like crazy somewhere around last year after. At first, I blamed it on stress, then I blamed it on my period, and finally after doing some research I thought lamotrigine (lamictal 50mg) was the issue. I went to the dermatologist, she checked my scalp with a microscope thing, did a pull test and sent me home with a hairspray and a topical steroid. She said that it was probably stress.
I told my psychiatrist about the hair shedding and she cut my dose in half (25 mg) daily and I thought that was it for me. Well, here we still are and it seems to me like I’m back at square one.

2024.05.13 21:01 Effective-Duck5076 I haven't been Inspired in a while to do anything

I didn't know where to put this because I dose involve my mother and 2 friends that are almost as close as family and like siblings
I'm 18f, my childhood was a dysfunctional one, wasn't taught much of basic things that were needed but regardless, ever since I was in a bad situation in middle school I've had very lacking inspiration to do anything.
I cant find a job because of not want to even do anything anymore and because my mom says, "I don't want you working that isnt wfh because I don't trust the world with someone like you"
Then she complains about me not having a life.
I don't know what I want or what I want to do.
College isn't a option either.
All I don't get out of bed during weekends besides to get a drink, take care of My pets, eat, and to use the bathroom, one Sundays I'm only inspired to actually do something because my friend and I hang out.
Weekdays are similar, but on weeks days I get up to watch Steve wilkos with my mom in the living room and drink coffee and then immediately go into my room for the rest of the day when she leaves for work.
I barley know what day it is anymore.
While the people that hurt me all those years ago ar flourishing after graduation, I'm here wasting away in my bed because I can't find the inspiration to do anything anymore.
I don't eat well, don't go out unless it's with my friend or my mom, I don't sleep well even though I'm always in bed and tired, I can barely practice basic hygiene.
I barely do things I use to love, sure I still play video games daily but it's just hardwired into my system now, art and scribbling subconsciously as well.
I hate loud things,I can't really do social cues, I hyperfixate on lore and characters, God the only things I do right is collect bottle caps and salt packets, along with taking care of My cats.
I don't have many friends besides two, one dosent really bother with me and the other has better things to do.
I'm 90% sure my friends hate when thye hear me rant about lore over and over agian, from Daedric lords of the elder scroll games to the lore of destiny 2 and baldurs gate 3.
When I finally find inspiration, its to start anew, travel, I looked at other states and countries and then pinpoint on Scotland. I wanna move to scotland and restart where no one knows me, I fixated on it for months, doing research and everything, i was so deep into research that I even chose parts of Scotland to see each visit and travel, and then see which parts are best for new comers to be in. I even looked at there taxes and how that would mix with us income taxes and looked into how I would make money, hell I study possible future issues.
I studied how to get cats accustomed to harnesses and collars and train them for travel.
1 friend cheered me on say she would do it with me, then turned out she loved the idea and but didn't wanna move because of all she had in the us, I said it's no problem.
I was in so deep and it made me happy, it then went down hill.
I started to get told things by my mom and the one friend.
"Oh you can't even awnser the phone how will you manage that?" "You are to naive to be on your own" "you can't even order food by yourself." "You need a job before you start planing stuff like that" "you can't survive on your own" "what about your family and friends?" "Why are you so insistent on uprooting your life?" "You have more here than you know" "you probably won't ever have enough money to do that" "your so naive and people will take advantage of you" "the only reason you wanna leave is shallow" "you wouldn't really make friend since your not good at that due to you.. interests" "you don't even like potatoes" "you won't survive" "you can't be trusted by yourself"
I was so convince by their words, that I dropped it entirely, stopped even taking about it, now everytime I hear about it or accidentally speak about it, it hurts.
Like my inspiration was one again ripped out of me by people around me.
It happens over and over again, I even do it to myself.
I can for my own though and opinions but when it comes to being convince to think something I just go along with it because it's been my way of survival for so long.
It keeps bitting me again and again.
I don't know what to do anymore.
This is probably above reddit pay grade lol
But what do I do?
TLDR: I'm so lacking in inspiration that it's functionality ruining me.

2024.05.13 20:53 Dear-Ad-8289 Ginkgo Biloba vs. Bacopa Monnieri: Comparing Two Powerhouse Herb

In the realm of herbal supplements, Ginkgo biloba and Bacopa monnieri stand out as two of the most revered and researched plants. Both have a storied history in traditional medicine and are celebrated for their ability to enhance cognitive functions. But how do they differ, and which might be more beneficial for your specific health needs? In this blog, we'll explore the unique benefits and uses of each, helping you make an informed choice.

Origins and Traditional Use

Ginkgo Biloba: Known as one of the oldest living tree species, Ginkgo biloba has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It is highly valued for its therapeutic properties, particularly in improving blood circulation and treating blood disorders.
Bacopa Monnieri: Commonly known as Brahmi, Bacopa monnieri is a staple herb in Ayurvedic medicine in India. It has been used for centuries primarily to enhance memory, reduce anxiety, and treat epilepsy.

Cognitive Enhancement

Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo is well-known for its ability to improve blood flow to the brain, which can help enhance memory and cognitive speed. It’s particularly popular among the elderly as it is thought to aid in the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer's disease by combating neuronal damage.
Bacopa Monnieri: Bacopa, on the other hand, is praised for its direct impact on brain health. It is believed to improve cognitive processing, memory, and attention span. Bacopa works by increasing certain brain chemicals involved in thinking, learning, and memory, and it has been shown to help retain information better.

Stress and Anxiety

Ginkgo Biloba: While Ginkgo does help in managing stress and anxiety by improving cerebral blood flow, its effects in this area are generally considered secondary to its circulatory benefits.
Bacopa Monnieri: Bacopa excels in reducing stress and anxiety. It acts as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body resist the physical and chemical effects of stress. This makes it extremely beneficial not just for mental clarity but also for overall emotional well-being.

Antioxidant Properties

Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo contains high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids, known for their strong antioxidant effects. These compounds help combat the damage caused by free radicals, contributing to the prevention of heart disease and cancer.
Bacopa Monnieri: Bacopa also has antioxidant properties that protect against cellular damage from free radicals. Its effects are particularly potent in the brain, protecting it from aging and environmental toxins.

Conclusion

Choosing between Ginkgo biloba and Bacopa monnieri largely depends on your specific health goals. If your primary concern is improving memory and protecting against neurodegenerative diseases, Ginkgo could be more beneficial. However, if you're looking for a supplement to enhance both cognitive function and emotional stability, Bacopa might be the better choice.
Both herbs offer significant health benefits and have their own unique strengths. Consulting with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen is wise, as they can provide guidance based on your individual health needs and conditions.

2024.05.13 20:50 FrankPots Beginner (elder branch) flute maker

Beginner (elder branch) flute maker
I recently got interested in crafting flutes through divine inspiration (I don't actually remember why, although I've always loved flutes...) and have already done some very rudimentary research into types of wood, how a Native American flute works, and what the steps might be to craft one from a branch.
I've recently sourced a branch that I think will suit this project really well from an elder (Sambucus nigra), but I don't want to rush into making the flute and make a bunch of unnecessary mistakes.
The image in my post shows the different sections of the branch. I'm thinking #3 should be the most suitable for the flute. Its diameter is between .8" and .9", and I'm hoping the bore will be around .6" once I've removed the pith. However, I'm not sure if I should also use part of section #4 and create the air hole and tsh around the knot between #3 and #4, or only use section #3 and put a plug between the air hole and tsh myself.
Also, if anyone has any ideas for the first two sections of the branch I'd also love to hear it. The diameter of those sections is a lot smaller and they're not quite straight, but it would be cool if I could still turn them into some smaller types of flutes. :)

2024.05.13 20:47 Philothea0821 Reflection on Readings - Ascension of Our Lord (Year B)

First Reading - Acts 1:1-11
In the first book,\)a\) O Theoph′ilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying\)b\) with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, 5 for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′ia and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Responsorial Psalm - Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9
Second Reading - Eph 1:17-23
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; 22 and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fulness of him who fills all in all.
Gospel - Mk 16:15-20
And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.
The Easter Season is coming to a close! This past weekend was the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord and next weekend is Pentecost!
I want to focus first on the Gospel message today: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation."
Jesus tells this really to every single one of us. Every week at the end of Mass, Catholics here the words "The mass is now over, let us go forth in peace glorifying the world by our light." Some Protestants to try and escape the binding loosing/authority to forgive sins given to the apostles, they try to say "Oh, Jesus only meant that in terms of spreading the Gospel." WHAT!? No. Jesus tells us to preach the Gospel to all of creation! Jesus came to save everyone and so everyone needs to here the Gospel for it is only through Jesus Christ, only through the Gospel, only through the Church that one can be saved!
Now, focusing on the angels' words from Acts:
“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Right before this, the apostles say "Jesus. How could you possibly go? You still need to restore the Kingdom of God!" Jesus tells them. "You are going to be doing it. Not me." Then the angels speak these words remining us that our work is not Heaven, but on Earth. We need to be the ones teaching the gospel, caring for the sick, tending the poor, visiting the imprisoned, etc.
To date, by my research the Catholic Church has
  • 18000 clinics
  • 16000 elderly/special needs homes
  • 5500 hospitals (accounts for 1 out of 6 hospital beds)
  • 200000 schools across elementary, middle, high, and university levels
Just in 2021
  • managed 2692 food distribution sites
  • provided $116,000,000 in disaster relief
  • built more than 34000 permanent housing units
Furthermore, many of these services serve those that are in underdeveloped regions. To define "many," 65%+ of the health services are in underdeveloped regions. This almost certainly likely only begins to capture the immense charity work that the Catholic Church is responsible for! Spread this across 2000 years of Church history: 9 clinics, 8 elderly homes, 2 hospitals, and 100 schools opening every year! This is not to brag about the Catholic Church has done, nor say that the work is done. By no means! But it is meant to highlight what it means to build the kingdom of God here on earth. Again, why do you look to Heaven when there is work to be done on Earth! Jesus specifically commands us to do these things and said that those we do not do them for we do not do for Christ!
Yes, we do not do them to be saved, but rather because we are saved! We do them out of love for Christ and His people!
Christ might have departed from us physically, but He is still hard at work through His Church, His body. He sent us the Holy Spirit to be an advocate for the Church, as well as gave us the apostles to carry on Christ's mission through their teachings and other works.
Let us pray:
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
God, Our Father in Heaven, You gave us Your Son, Jesus Christ to come into this world to die for our sins. You gave us Your Spirit to guide us always calling us to you. Give us the grace of Your Son, the Bread of Life, in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist to give us not only bodily strength but spiritual strength to all those who often grow tired from doing your sacred work. You gave us dominion over all the birds of the sky, fish of the sea, and creatures that crawl about the land, help us to cherish your creation that you have given to us as stewards. Help us to recognize that, as stewards of not only Your creation, but Your Word, that our work is not only looking upwards, but outwards. We are all your children created in your image. Help us to see you in the elderly woman alone on the park bench, the homeless man begging on the street, the criminal behind bars, and many more. How could we ever imagine others seeing You in us if we cannot see You in them?
We ask you today to heal the battle wounds that Your Most Holy Church has suffered. Eradicate all sources of corruption and evil in your Virgin Bride. Help us to aid those who have suffered ill at the hands of those who claim to be your servants. We ask Your mercy upon these people who abuse Your Name and give us the grace to be able to forgive them, particularly if we ourselves have been hurt. If we have been a source of pain to others, fill our hearts with Your charity so we can turn away from that evil and love our neighbor as You have loved Your Son.
We ask this in the name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit who together with you and the Son is both adored and glorified. Amen.
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
