I'm using the Steam Valheim Dedicated Server, and before update worked just fine. The world I'm trying to use on the server works just fine with Ashlands, but when trying to utilize the server I just get this in the Command Window (scroll all the way down once you've read a dozen or so shader warnings). I truly have no idea what to make of this, I don't know anything about coding. I figured out just enough to get the server running in the first place. No mods.

Just as the title says, this is my current situation. I am starting my first semester of college with 4 classes totaling 13 credits. I am listed as full time for the FAFSA and received half of the money, and on another scholarship it says, "student not enrolled fulltime" and was also significantly reduced when it came to my school giving me my award letter. Is this because I'm taking 3 classes in the first half of the semester (9 credits) and 1 class (4 credits) in the second half of the semester? I'm paying for it all regardless, so why did my financial aid become so reduced? If I'm truly half time, why does it say I'm enrolled in 13 credits and not "planned" to take 4 credits later? I'm a bit frustrated by this as I'm struggling financially and I've been emailing my financial aid office about this but I've received no response yet, should I call and/or go in person? Or am I wrong and the college, fafsa, and scholarship are in the right that I'm not truly a full time student?

I (38 F) have been married to my husband (41 M) for 7 years, this coming June and together for 9 years. We have two kids, twin boys, that are 5 months old. I'm going to give a long backstory so stay with me or scroll to the bottom for the TL;DR.
2 weeks before Mother's Day, I found out my husband had been cheating on me for at least 7 months. I used his phone to use the Lowe's app to order lawn chairs since it's tied to our Lowe's card and I wanted to use our rewards. While I was looking for the particular set I want, he received a Snapchat notification from a woman. I didn't even know he had Snapchat so it peaked my interest. During this time, my husband was mowing the grass.
I open the snap and it's a nude of a woman looking to be in her mid-20s with the caption "I miss you being inside of me". My jaw hit the floor. I started going through his text messages and there were no conversations there with other women except employees from his practice (he is a dermatologist) that were harmless.
I started looking through his Snapchat and I guess he deletes everything because there were no chats between him and this woman. I am not familiar with Snapchat so I Google how to use it while I'm trying to figure out if I can retrieve deleted messages. I don't want to spend all the time I have left of him mowing reading through articles so I give up. I do go through his friend's list and end up coming back to it to take a picture of with my phone.
I look through the rest of the apps on his phone and they all seem benign except this secure folder. I open it and there's a passcode. I try three or four until I figure it out (the date of our first date, ironically) and it opens. There are dozens of nude photos of at least 3 women, including the woman from Snapchat. I know it's the woman from Snapchat because she has a very distinct tattoo on her stomach. Not only are there nudes but there are 2 videos of this same woman giving him oral.
My heart felt like it was trying to come out of my chest. I started shaking and tears started flowing. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down and then grabbed my phone and started taking pictures of the evidence. I even recorded clips of the videos, I just couldn't watch them in their entirety.
I look through all the apps again and realize that maybe he has some hidden. So, I google hidden apps on android and follow the instructions. Three apps were hidden. Two messaging apps and a hook-up app called Adult friend finder. I debated even opening them because I was so scared of what I would find. But I ended up viewing them because knowing is better than not knowing for me.
He had been messaging at least 4 different women, including the video girl. He had sex with at least two of them that I found proof of. All messages made me sick but the video girl's messages were the worst and completely shattered my heart. I had to stop to go throw up because of the stress and anxiety.
Some messages that hurt me the most were: Her: "Tell me how much better my p***y is than your wife's." Him: "Wetter, tighter and infinitely better."
Her: *sends nude* "How does my body compare to your wife's?" Him: "There is no comparison baby, you are a goddess."
There were so many others but those two come to mind as the ones that made me feel the absolute worst. Remember, I just had twins 5 months ago. I am very insecure due to all of the changes that happened to my body and my c-section scar. I am also 25 pounds heavier than I was pre-pregnancy. My husband and I stopped having sex because it was so uncomfortable for me about 2 months before I gave birth, around the same time he started messaging these women coincidentally. We've only had sex about three times since they were born due to my insecurity issues and just being so exhausted caring for and breastfeeding twins every day. I also have a business and work from home around the twins' schedules so I can stay at home with them.
I take photos of everything, using my phone again like before. The earliest messages were sent 7 months ago so I know it had been going on for at least 7 months, while I was freaking pregnant with our twins. Oh, I also found out that the night after I had a c-section and while our newborn preemie twins were in the NICU, he met with video girl for a hook-up at her apartment. He told me he was going to get food and check on his office. With our twins being preemies, anything could have happened and he wouldn't have been there because he was with her. But, that wasn't a thought for him I guess.
I close out all the apps, make sure the hidden ones are hidden from his home screen and put his phone back exactly where I found it. I also make sure the snap notification was gone. I was nervous that he would find out about the snap that was opened but he didn't.
I call my best friend of over 33 years who is also my business partner. I tell him everything and have a good cry to let it all out. He helps me to collect myself and gives me some sound advice. He tells me to not tell my husband I found anything yet and to speak with a divorce lawyer as soon as possible. He said to meet with the best ones in my area so that they couldn't represent my husband. He offers me and the twins a place to stay at his home if I need time away from my husband, assuring me that his husband would love to have me there.
Over the next week, my BFF helps me take care of the twins while meet with 5 different divorce lawyers and end up hiring, in my opinion, the best. She tells me not to leave the family home so I end up not going to stay with my BFF. She starts the divorce paperwork immediately. During this time, I am doing my best to continue on like nothing is wrong. I want to make sure all of my ducks are in a row before he realizes what I know.
Fast-forward to Mother's Day. My husband makes me breakfast in bed, gives me very expensive jewelry, flowers, the works. I can't enjoy it, of course, because it feels so fake now that I know what he's been up to. I pretend to love it though.
My husband's father planned a cook out that afternoon for my husband's mother, sister (let's call her Julie), sister-in-law (let's call her Fran) and me. We all have infants under a year old so it's everyone's first Mother's day, except my MIL's of course. I told my husband that I didn't feel like going and he guilt-tripped me by saying that my FIL had a big surprise for me and he's been really looking forward giving it to me. So, I reluctantly agree. I ask if my BFF can come since his mother sadly passed away just under a year ago. He calls his dad and my FIL replies that of course he can come. My BFF agreed to come to offer me support since he knew it would be very difficult for me to be there.
I plan to act like nothing's wrong and try to enjoy the day since it's my first Mother's Day after all. I tell myself that I will focus on the twins and get cuddles from my two nieces. Julie has an 8 month old daughter and Fran (husband's brother's wife) has a 10 month old daughter. I'm also the closest to Julie out of all his family since we became friends 10 years ago and she's the one who introduced me to my husband.
We get there and everything is fine. My husband is helping his dad, brother (let's call him Chris), BIL (let's call him Roger) cook on the grill. My MIL and the women are taking turns holding the babies. My BFF took over the kitchen, finishing up all of the sides so the moms could relax. It started out to be a really good day. I kept myself from thinking of my husband's betrayal for the most part and focused on the family.
After we eat my MIL starts taking pictures of the family. I'm sitting on the couch and she tells my husband to sit beside me for the photo. He does and then she tells him to put his arm around me and jokingly says "pretend like you love her" and I lose it. I start to uncontrollably sob.
My MIL pulls me up and hugs me and my FIL comes over and joins in the hug. My BFF comes to stand right next to me. My FIL asks me what was wrong. I look at my BFF and he gives me a "tell if you want" look.
I tell them that I found out my husband has been cheating on me for at least 7 months. Julie gasps and everyone stares at my husband. He stands up and says "that's not true at all, why would you think that? You know you and the boys are my whole world." Everyone is silent, looking at me. I tell them all that I found messages, pictures, the hook-up app and even videos on his phone. My husband looks faint and sits back down. Nobody says anything for at least 2 minutes.
Finally, Julie asks my husband, while crying herself, why? My husband tells her that "I made a mistake, I only talked to the women, I never physically cheated." My BFF quickly replies, "Liar!" Julie then asks me what all I found. I tell them everything, the nudes, the videos of my husband receiving oral, the messages and even tell them what those horrible messages said about me. He continues to deny it! I pull up a few message photos and show them to Julie, my MIL and FIL. My husband tries to gaslight me by saying that he admitted to talking to other women but he never slept with any of them. I really don't want to show them the video but I do find a few messages where my husband and a woman talked about their previous sexual encounters. My husband again says that he admitted to talking to them but never really cheated. He literally says "if the message talks about sex it was just role playing."
Roger (Julie's husband) goes over to my husband and jerks his phone out of his hand. My husband tries to get it back but Roger is 6'7 and my husband is 6'1 so he just holds it up where my husband can't reach. He asks me what his passcode is and I tell him. He then asks me where to find things and as I start to tell him my husband grabs his phone back.
At this point my MIL, Julie and Fran are all crying. Chris starts getting upset with me. He tells me this was not the time nor place to bring this all up and that I ruined Julie and Fran's first Mother's Day. Julie speaks up and says no, my husband is the one who ruined it. Chris starts yelling and saying that our personal business needs to stay private and that I had no right to bring it up to his family and ruin the only first mother's day the women will get. Fran agrees with him and tells me I'm definitely in the wrong for bringing it up, if it even is true.
At this point both of my twins start crying. I am not going to breastfeed them there and I want to get out of that house as quick as possible. I ask my BFF to take me home and we transfer the car seats from my husband's vehicle into his. My MIL follows me outside and says that Chris was right, I should have kept it all to myself and that now future Mother's Days will be a reminder of this fiasco for everyone. I just ignore her and put the twins in the car. My husband comes outside and asks if we can please talk. I tell him no, get in the car and my BFF, the twins and I leave. I end up feeling horrible and guilty that I let it all out to everyone.
My husband didn't come home and ended up staying at his parents house and has been there the past two nights. He got my FIL to come over Sunday evening and pick up clothes, toiletries, work stuff and various other items. While he was here I asked him, did I ruin Mother's Day? He tells me no that my husband did. He said that he asked me what was wrong and I was honest. He said he understood now why the "pretend like you love her" comment caused me to breakdown. I asked him about my MIL, Chris and Fran since I know Julie and Roger aren't mad at me. He said that they are still angry with me but they will eventually get over it.
TL;DR - I found out my husband had been cheating on me for at least 7 months with multiple women, starting while I was pregnant with our twins and continuing after I gave birth. I didn't tell him I knew for 2 weeks. At a Mother's Day cookout that his family hosted for his mother, me, his sister and sister-in-law, his mother made a comment that made me break down. I ended up telling everyone about the infidelity. His brother, SIL, and mother told me I ruined his sister and SIL's first Mother's Day. and that I shouldn't have said anything about the affairs.

What's the best way to develop on k8s? This is probably a loaded question, but I'm talking about when working on a solo application, and deploying to say EKS, do you do something like:

• develop local application
  
• containerize application
  
• do testing here at this stage via docker?
  
  • or do we stand up a local k8s cluster and deploy it here already?
• once your app is complete, how would you test sidecars and such?
  
• testing node-level configurations?
  

Basically wondering what a good flow is, do ya'll develop first on a local minikube/kind cluster then promote to a higher level infra for more testing?
Note: I'm specifically talking about solo small scale projects, intended to learn more about k8s and developing on it, so I don't think I'll be standing up CICD for this.

As the headmaster in his splendid robes of purple takes a step aside he is joined by an uncomfortable-looking scrawny boy. Mor is trying to take deep slow breaths to not faint or worse puke with all the attention of the new students, teachers, and the headmaster resting on him.
As Mor nervously stutters at the beginning of his speech, he instantly flinches in surprise as subtle magic circles amplify his voice.
"T...t..tt... thanks... h..headmaster" Trying to get rid of his stutter Mor takes a deep breath "I´mreallygratefullforthisopportunityandhopeallstudentswillenjoytheirtime"
A cough from the grandmaster luckily brings the wordflood to a hold and an encouraging nod lets Mor compose himself and start over.
"To all students, I´m honored to stay on this stage as your representative. My dream always was to join this academy like my parents did before me and while this is a place of learning and growth I hope to find comrades and friends within all of you. Because my status as the son of an officer is below many of you who are nobles I wanted to refuse this honor, but the headmaster insisted on this tradition and the following aptitude test. So while I wanted to give the honor of first student to someone of a more prestigious family, it was denied."
At this point, the headmaster takes a step forward and takes over the speech
"As this has gone on long enough, I will now test all your aptitudes starting with Mr. Agaton here."
And while this statement resulted in a lot of exciting murmuring someone with keen hearing might have heard a few dissident voices in the crowd.
"Mr. Agaton please place your hands on this cristal ball and let your magic flow" The headmaster produced a crystal sphere about 30 cm in diameter and held it out for Mor, who slowly put his hands on it and while taking deep breaths concentrated on making his innate magic flow. The crystal sphere slowly gains a subtle purple-blue hue and lazy energy impulses flow within. This lets the headmaster frown and look with a bit of pity on Mor. Finally, he clears his throat and speaks, as Mor opens his eyes in expectation. In a voice devoid of reproach or approval he simply states.
"Mr. Agaton your aptitude for specialised magic is none, you have no affinity other than basic magic energy. But don´t let this discourage you, you can still become a great wizard."
The second sentence was nothing more than a platitude. It is common knowledge, that without specialized affinity the magic of the higher circles is outside of reach and while everyone else was taking the aptitude test, Mor silently walked back off the stage, to the end of the gathered students lamenting his lot all the way. Finally, as all tests were concluded, he was the only one without any specialized affinity and now his first place on the theoretical tests, his low status, and his weak magic instantly made him an outcast among his peers.

So I recently downloaded an indie game (.flow to be precise) outside of steam or any other similar services, the game worked just fine but the thing is it has a small screen so it wasn't using all of my monitor and was just a square with some black areas on both sides. It's just that when I first opened the game, I didn't notice I had another game still running in the background. Now, the other game is permamently also stuck in that same small square screen, it was completely normal before. I deleted that first game I downloaded that caused this, and I also reinstalled the other game as well. My resolution settings are the highest possible and no other game is affected in this way. I don't know what else to do about this. Sorry if this is not the right place to ask about this, I'm really just unsure of how to solve this. (The game I'm having issues with is genshin impact btw)

To preface I am on SSI not SSDI. I was told to contact a lawyer by somebody who told me this is a legal matter so I'd figure I'd start here first and pay for a lawyer if I really have to.
So I'm currently in school to get a Master's. I had applied for financial aid last year and I applied again this year not knowing that I couldn't get a new loan because I god TPD discharge. I didn't request the TPD it just happened on it's own. I'm at a cross roads because I'm unsure what to do as my school gave me a form for my doctor to determine whether I can participate in GSA or not. Until I get this form filled out my aid is on hold. My dilemma is that if he/she puts 'yes' would I lose my SSI? Would I have to report this to SSI or would it be something I mention when I'm up for review? If he puts I am disabled I won't get a loan. Now, I did call my loaner and request for a reinstatement as I never requested I had a discharge. They told me it automatically happened for me. Had I known I would have reinstated it sooner because they said they don't know when it will be reinstated so currently it's just in a request period and not reinstated yet.

Additionally I did talk to someone who has told me taking out a loan when you had one discharged is illegal. My only goal here is to do the right thing while also keeping myself alive and not end up in prison because i'm not trying to get by on anybody. Like if I have to get the form filled out and my dr puts I can do GSA I'll tell SSA if I'm supposed. If I lose SSI I can apply to medicaid through my state so that is what I'll just have to do. I just don't want to do the wrong thing or get in trouble.
So I was wondering should I get this form filled out? I dont know what my doctor will put seeing as he isn't the one who initially helped me get on SSI. The person I spoke to doesnt think my doctor will put I can't do GSA because of a new medication that came out that has drastically improved people's lives. While it has improved my life it hasn't increasingly improved it. I'm still a very borderline case, but according to the person I spoke to she said my dr won't help anybody on this medication to get disability. should I simply call up my financial aid office and tell them I didn't know, I made a mistake and ask if they can cancel it and just see if my family member is still willing to pay? Any other advice that I didn't mention would be greatly appreciated.

For the past four years, I’ve been working and going to college. I had minor aid, but mostly paid for everything myself by working 2-3 jobs. I just graduated this weekend and asked my sister to go. She said “maybe, but i’m busy that day.” I figured she had something important to do so I just let it be. Nope! She was going out with her boyfriend. Then she told someone it was just my associates and it took me along time, it wasn’t anything special. I’m the first in family to graduate college. I worked my ass off to get my degree. I think this might be the thing that makes me cut her off.

We have been trying for our 2nd for the past year (currently on my 9th tracked cycle with good timing) with no success except for a few chemicals and miscarriages (5 weeks, 4 weeks, 7 weeks of twins after normal scan with heartbeat, and 4.5 weeks). Our first was conceived relatively quickly (3rd cycle with a 5 week loss on the 1st cycle).
We have some mild male factor involved but it’s debatable how much of an impact this has (low rapid progressive motility at 4%, and low morphology at 2%). Not sure why we are otherwise having trouble getting and staying pregnant but MIL and husband’s stepmom also went through infertility and miscarriages but we’ve had doctors all disagree on how much of an impact sperm issues are having in our difficulties. The typical RPL testing (autoimmune, clotting, karyotype, etc) have come back negative but I do have very well-managed Hashimoto’s. We are awaiting testing on sperm DNA fragmentation.
I’ve heard that people with endo tend to have a lower than normal AMH (or have rapid declines in AMH) and higher amounts of estrogen. My AMH (4.5 ng/ml) is on the higher side for my age (31). My estrogen is on the low side on CD3 (26) and using Inito, my estrogen has been on the low side of their reference range (125 at peak when reference range is 100-600). I don’t seem to have estrogen dominance either as my progesterone is high post ovulation (20+) but my estrogen remains low (< 100).
I don’t have particularly painful periods (maybe a few hours on the first day and only ocasionally needing Tylenol) and they are on the shorter and lighter side (only 1 day of heavy bleeding with 2 days of very light flow). But after my 7 week miscarriage they have been more painful and I’ve been passing some clots, but the pain goes away quickly. No ovulation pain or pain during sex but my BM have always been a bit variable (which I’ve attributed to IBS or food sensitivities). I’ve had pelvic ultrasound and MRI and they didn’t find anything that would point towards endo but as I know only severe cases would show up on imaging. One thing that may predispose me to endo is that I had early Menarche (around 11.5 years old).
Is it likely that I don’t have endo? I’m worried because I’ve heard of a lot of unexplained/mild MFI infertility and RPL cases are due to endo even though I don’t really have any overt signs of it. My RE doesn’t recommend a lap since I have very minimal pain for only a few hours once a month and it likely won’t lead to an improved outcome fertility-wise (we will likely need IUI or IVF anyway).

Been using this monitor for just over a week now. It replaced an AOC 34" UW VA that I used for personal and WFH (I'm 100% remote), and I'm still using a secondary Acer 27"1440p IPS monitor in portrait mode. Some thoughts:

• I read through the internetz for all tips and tricks on using QD-OLED monitors as the primary screen and initially tried them all with the intention on disabling/reducing any that were very annoying for my work flow even before setting up the monitor:
  • Windows 11 Dark mode: lots of thoughts on this one. See below.
  • Auto-hiding task bar and using TranslucentTB to make it transparent (auto-hiding was annoying at first, but got used to it
  • Removing all icons from OLED desktop (easy enough since I don't like icons on my desktop)
  • Setting monitor to sleep at 3 minutes idle (used to be 5 minutes, so wasn't too bad to adjust to)
  • Using Wallpaper Engine (I don't know why I didn't use this sooner. Used Razer Axon before but wasn't a fan so I went back to regular ol' Windows wallpaper picker)
• I set up the monitor using TFTCentral's suggested settings (https://youtu.be/dpYfk6LmUOM) and mostly kept them except for the brightness. They suggested 42, I turned mine down to 37 as I found 42 still too bright for my office (2 small windows perpendicular to my desk, not much directly sunlight at all; LED floor lamp bouncing light off my wall and ceiling for even lighting) and it better matched the brightness set on my secondary and old primary VA.
• Did all the obligatory testing of SDHDR content (web browsing, videos, Doom (2016), XCOM 2, Death Stranding, Vampire Survivors, AC: Odyssey, among others) pre- and post-Windows HDR Calibration and it all looks predictably good. Won't retread all that since you can read it elsewhere.
  • For SDR, I keep APL Low and for HDR (I don't use the other HDR profiles) I keep APL Medium
• So far, Pixel Clean has only run 3 times in the 38 hours of logged time. I thought it runs after 4 hours of use and when screen is asleep for at least 5 minutes? The only time I've turned off my monitor was at the end of the night. But there are several portions of the day where my monitor is in sleep mode for an hour or 2 at a time. Shouldn't the Pixel Clean run then?
• About Windows 11 Dark Mode:
  • I set both my personal PC and work laptop to dark mode all day about 3 days before I set up the new monitor with the intent on getting used to it by the time I had it up and running. Normally, I run light mode during the day and then it auto-switches to dark mode at sunset. By day T-2, I noticed that everything I looked at on my monitor and in real-life started to look a tad blurry and my eyes always felt tired. I tried to ensure that there was minimal contrast (set all apps/websites to dark mode, etc) and kept office lighting consistent, but still had issues with it at day T-1.
  • I kept dark mode going 24/7 for the first 3 days of using the new monitor but still had the same blurry/fatigued eyes feeling.
  • So now, time to test the burn in boogieman and 3 year warranty! In the days since I've switched back to my original routine of light mode during the day and dark mode after sunset, my eyes feel normal again.
  • Everything else I did to protect the monitor lifespan is still in place.

Still loving the monitor and now that I'm at peace with my decision to go back to light mode, I'll have a lot less Reddit opinion paralysis.

I have endometriosis and got the mirena put in in January 2022 due to lengthy bleeding. I got it removed in January 2024 so I could start trying to conceive. I didn’t get any withdrawal bleeding and got my first period April 3/24. It lasted 11 days but was a normal flow. I didn’t ovulate that month.
I then got my second period on May 1/24 and it is now on day 14. It’s been mostly super light flow (more like spotting) with random hours of being medium-heavy flow.
I have a doctors appointment next week but I’m hoping someone else coming off the IUD has maybe had the same issues.

I (36) am just over 1 month post breakup from a 3 year relationship. The most difficult part of my journey has been accepting the lack of reasoning for the breakup.
My ex (33) described the relationship as perfect, the best years of her life and I couldn’t have been a better partner. She fell out of love several weeks before the breakup and didn’t see a future any more (and kept it secret). Nothing was insufficient and she wasn’t looking to improve or change anything in her next relationship. She decided to end the relationship just a couple weeks before moving in together.
When we first met I was the best version of myself, I treated her well, we made sure we were compatible with shared interests and life goals, we took things slow and checked that we were on the same page every step of the way.
There weren’t any signs of problems and yet, the relationship ended. The end of the relationship was 0% my fault and there was nothing I could do. I’ve found that difficult to understand and accept.
Ive now realised that she was on the verge of burnout from work for some time, had family care obligations, health/dietary issues and unresolved issues from a toxic relationship that ended several months before we met. I never thought the stress would impact our relationship because I was a positive influence and supported her (as she did with me).
It’s normal to have fluctuations in your feelings for your partner (love ebbs and flows), but I don’t think she could handle the stress of the upcoming move in addition to the reduction in feelings, everything felt wrong to her but she didn’t know why. My behaviour didn’t change so it had nothing to do with me but everything to do with her.
I can’t even hate her for it, I mostly feel empathy. She’s lost something great because of the fear of commitment and external factors. She needs to make big changes in her life to feel independently happy and be able to maintain a long term relationship. I am sad that couldn’t be with me, because we were very good together.
I mostly wrote this to share my story and the growth in my understanding. I’m sure other people are in similar situations, so maybe this helps to know you’re not alone.

I was going through a situation today where I was very full of adrenaline. I was texting my (now ex) partner that I found out had intended to cheat on me (they hadn't broken up with me but had gotten back on Hinge). I noticed after a while that I could not feel my toes any longer. This occasionally happens to me, but I had just chocked it up to poor blood flow. I feel that this is the first time that I have made the connection to emotion in an instance of loss of circulation. The adrenaline was from my body intending to keep me safe and bring my blood to my core. It was a physical response to what my body perceived as danger, even if it was purely emotional.
Am I correct about what happened, or am I making a false correlation?
Has this happened to anyone else?

Synopsis:
Carlos was an ordinary software engineer on Earth, up until he died and found himself in a fantasy world of dungeons, magic, and adventure. This new world offers many fascinating possibilities, but it's unfortunate that the skills he spent much of his life developing will be useless because they don't have computers.

Carlos lounged comfortably on one of the mayor's fancy sofas. At 23 years old with a healthy body he really didn't need cushioned upholstery, but he liked how it felt. Honestly, he was probably more comfortable with high quality furniture than someone of his relatively low-income background should be in this world. Spoiled by the mass production factories of modern Earth, I suppose. All of this stuff here is probably handmade. Er, make that definitely handmade. Unless they have magic factories I haven't heard about, or something. He mentally shrugged. There was no point trying to change his attitudes toward furniture now. While this world might have higher prices for a lot of things than he was used to, he was also a lot richer than he was used to thanks to having become a noble lord. People would expect him to treat fine furniture as cheap because of his station.
I might have the physical habits of a couch potato, but at least I don't look like one. Too skinny. Not as skinny as Amber, though. He smiled as he watched the young woman next to him on the sofa continue animatedly expounding on their recent adventures together. She was lanky, with few curves to speak of and spindly limbs, far from any conventional picture of feminine beauty. Her hair, a slightly lighter shade of brown than his own, was cropped short. He thought she was 18 or 19 years old, but wasn't sure. Have I really never asked her age before? ... Would that be a rude question here? Regardless of her age, she had grown her confidence a lot since their first meeting a few weeks ago. She'd found her footing in a new life that she'd seized with utter determination, and he saw no sign of the shyness that she'd first greeted him with. The way her potential was finally blooming was beautiful to watch.
Carlos turned his gaze to the sofa across from them and carefully held back from laughing at the expressions Trinlen was making as Amber wrapped up explaining the events and developments they'd gone through since their introduction to him at the Royal Mage Academy. Carlos had contributed a fair amount to the explanation at first, but Amber had taken to it with enthusiasm when she arrived, and he could tell she was enjoying it. The young man in front of them, newly graduated from said academy, was on the edge of his seat and leaning forward, hanging attentively on every word. His casual attire, plain and made of cheap materials, looked thoroughly out of place on the finely embroidered velvet of the sofa, but he'd shown no sign of even noticing the finery around him. Excitement warred for control of his face with surprise, disbelief, envy, and dismay.
Amber finished her impromptu monologue, and Trinlen slowly schooled his face into a neutral expression. His voice was tense and tightly controlled. "So... In short, you're telling me that in the mere two weeks since you met me, you discovered a mana-poaching conspiracy of nobles, were abducted right under the noses of two royal guards without them even noticing, absorbed mana so fast that you gained 6 levels in a day and a half - so unfair, by the way - somehow learned an obscure portal spell from just its name and description, found evidence of a conspiracy against the Crown, and personally met a princess." He paused, then threw his hands up as he wailed in frustration and disappointment. "And I missed it!?"
Carlos threw back his head and burst out laughing. He couldn't help it. Trinlen just sounded so much like a little kid who'd barely missed out on a candy store giving away its entire stock for free. It was such an incredible light-hearted contrast with how everyone else viewed these same events that the sheer ridiculousness of it was overwhelming. Amber joined the laughter a moment later, shaking her head in amused disbelief, and after a few more seconds Trinlen started chuckling too.
Carlos's laughter eventually trailed off, and he took a deep breath to settle down. "Thanks, Trinlen. It's been a very stressful two weeks, and laughing like that helped release a lot of it. Feels good. Anyway, what have you been up to? I thought you would take a whole month to graduate?"
"Technically I only said 'next month', not that it would be at the same point in the month. But yes, this is earlier than I expected. The normal graduation ceremony is still a week and a half away." Trinlen shrugged. "They didn't explain the reasons, but after what you said I'm guessing your meeting with the princess prompted her to do something. The vice headmaster called me to his office yesterday morning, a few teachers grilled me on my classwork, and they declared I'd passed my exams. Then they told me to pack because I'd be teleported to my new employers the next day, and here I am." He sighed. "Hmph. Now I won't get to humiliate Norla in front of the whole academy when she gives her speech." Then he perked up and grinned widely. "But it sounds like you two are going to be so much fun that I'll get over it in no time!"
"I'm not sure if I agree with your idea of fun, Trinlen, but if it motivates you to help us more then that's good enough for me." Carlos chuckled again. "Anyway, do you need some time to get settled in? You might need to think about lesson plans for us too. We don't need just catalogues of incantations to learn anymore, at least not for simple ones, but I believe you learned other things in the academy too. You mentioned creating your own spells, as I recall."
Trinlen nodded. "I did mention that, yes. I'm guessing your lack of need for a catalogue is because of your newfound ability to somehow pull entire incantations from thin air? You'll have to at least tell me about the limitations of that so I'll know what I still need to teach you, but yeah, there are other things. For one thing, there's your sloppy terminology! Why does no one outside of the academy care about properly distinguishing between the states of mana? Is it really that hard to understand that calling aether, mana, and essence all by the same term obscures your meaning and often causes confusion? Or are people so stupid that they can't even understand the difference?"
Carlos blinked and exchanged a look with Amber. His comprehension aid informed him about the distinction the instant Trinlen spoke the terms. That would have been nice to know earlier. The comprehension aid is a house secret, so we should let him explain. "At least for us, it's just ignorance. I don't think I've even heard the other two terms you mentioned, and certainly no one ever explained them. So, what is the difference?"
Trinlen paused, cocked his head for a moment, and slowly deflated after his impassioned rant. "Yeah, okay, that's fair. I don't think I ever heard about it before going to the academy either." He sat up straight. "Aether is what you've been calling ambient mana. It's thin like air, and it's everywhere. Its only use is converting it to mana or essence. Mana, using the term with proper precision, is thicker but still fluid like water. It exists primarily in people or creatures and is used as fuel to supply power for spells and magical effects. Essence is hard and solid. It is the material that soul structures are made of, as well as the forms of active spells and enchantments. Am I clear so far?"
Amber answered first. "Yes, I'm familiar with each of the forms you described. I have questions about more details - so many questions - but you should get properly settled in, and maybe eat lunch, before we really get down to it. Have you spoken with Mayor Stelras yet? Do you have lodging sorted out?"
"I went by his office first. He's having someone take my luggage to an inn. The Adventurer's Haven, I think? He said something about a 'low-value target' and having an empty suite already booked." Trinlen's eyes widened. "Waaait a minute. Is he putting me in the room you two were abducted from?"
Carlos shrugged. "Sounds like it."
"Nice! Think there'll be any evidence left of how it was done?"
"Haha! Probably not by this point, but you're welcome to look. Now go get unpacked, eat a meal, and start planning your lessons for us. I'm glad you're here, but we have some other things to do too."
Trinlen nodded and stood up. "Sure. I'll be back before you miss me."
Carlos waved as Trinlen sauntered out the door. He and Amber sat in companionable silence for a while as he felt the mana - or essence? - of Trinlen's soul moving off into the distance. "Well. That was interesting. It's good to have him, but I was expecting a bit more time to think and plan before he'd get here."
"Yeah." Amber stretched and then leaned back into the sofa's cushions, luxuriating in their soft firmness. "So, how much are we going to tell him? How useful will his knowledge even be for us, now that we have, what did you call it, the reference documentation? That bit about the states of mana is good to know, but is it really relevant and important, and how much more can there be that's not in the documentation?"
"Be careful talking about that out loud, remember?" Carlos relaxed and draped his arms across the sofa's back as he focused his mind on their mental bond through Purple, their friendly dungeon core. [On Earth, we made many languages similar to the language of incantations, and we had the reference documentation for all of them. We even published that documentation free for everyone to have. Teachers for those languages were still useful, and even critically important for many people. Having access to knowledge doesn't mean you automatically understand how to properly apply it. There may be related knowledge we have no idea even exists. There could be techniques and patterns for how to use the language that are simply outside the scope of the documentation. Perhaps most importantly, a teacher can use their experience to notice a student's mistakes and correct them before they become problems.]
[Hmm.] Amber bit her lip, thinking. [Like how I knew about making soul structures and synergies between them, but had no idea about the importance of being able to examine and fix them, I suppose.]
Carlos nodded. [Yeah. And that's a really simple example. I know some that are a lot more complex, though I'm not sure how many of them are even applicable for incantations. Inversion of control, dependency injection, factory patterns...] He shook his head. [Just the context knowledge needed to be able to fully understand those could take days or weeks to teach well enough for you to use them. I could maybe explain the basic ideas faster with some simplified analogies, but that would lose so many details that I doubt it would still be useful.]
Amber paused. [... Even my comprehension aid is baffled by the terms you just said. It translated the individual words that you said, but all I got for the phrases is a confusing jumble.] She chuckled. [Anyway, I concede the point. Trinlen will still be able to teach us important and useful things. We still need to decide what secrets to share with him.]
[A lot depends on how good he is at keeping secrets. We don't actually know him all that well yet. He's certainly fun, and he seems clever, but for assessing his integrity we're leaning pretty hard on just a janitor vouching for him.] Carlos frowned in thought. [In order for him to do his job, he needs to know that we can only "pull an entire incantation from thin air" if it's a simple one. He does not need to know the full details of help, however, and most certainly does not need to learn to use it himself. That secret is a very sensitive one, where even just letting too much knowledge of it spread would lose us a major advantage.]
[Definitely. No casting help where he can hear it, and don't say anything about it that's not directly relevant for his teaching, either. Not until he's earned our full trust.] Amber lapsed into silent consideration. [We should introduce him to Purple. We'll kind of have to at some point anyway, and the really valuable thing there is Purple himself, not just the knowledge of his existence.]
Carlos nodded. [True. I think that probably is the least sensitive of our house secrets, and being able to call him through a bond with Purple would be useful.] He chuckled. [And maybe his cleverness will end up producing some good ideas for Purple to use. See if he can find a more productive outlet than pranks for his creativity. And then... If he keeps that secret well enough for long enough, we can consider trusting him with more secrets.]
Amber sent back wordless agreement.
Carlos started sitting up, lifting himself out of the comfortable cushions. "Well, we should get some food ourselves, too. And maybe introduce Trinlen to everyone else along with Purple." He stood up and spotted a letter he'd set aside when Trinlen arrived. "Oh yeah, and what do you think we should do about Kindar?"
"Wait, what's this about Kindar?"

Keshad Johnson saw his collegiate career end in the Sweet Sixteen with the Arizona Wildcats this year after a very successful season, helping the Wildcats earn a #2 seed and win the Pac 12 regular season. Johnson was a member and starter on San Diego State's Final Four team that made the championship in 2023 and played four years for the Aztecs before transferring to Arizona for his final season.
Johnson was a role player for San Diego State, two year starter but primarily a defender and play finisher. He wanted the opportunity to expand his role and he received that this season at Arizona.
Johnson is long, powerfully built 6'7 PF. Weighed at a very chiseled 224 pounds with a 6'11 wingspan at the combine. He is a big time leaper in the open floor and with any time/space to load. He's fast in the open floor. He has a quick first step and is very mobile. He plays physically and isn't afraid of getting dirty. He uses his length to his advantage on both ends. Johnson's physical tools are at the heart of his intrigue as a prospect.
Johnson is a big time transition threat, lots of lobs throughout the season, a big time dunker that elevates with ease. Gets off the ground quickly and has a big time vertical. He runs the floor hard. He can even handle a bit in transition. He took it coast to coast a few times during the season.
Johnson isn't the best ballhandler overall, he doesn't have much in the way of advanced moves, he can get a bit uncoordinated at times when looking to do a little too much with his handle and he's not an isolation guy at all, but he is someone in the halfcourt and in transition that plays strong with the ball in a straight line. He's a good straight line driver off rips, he has a quick first step. His mobility aids him as a PnR roller. He makes himself presentable and available for ballhandlers in the PnR as a roller. His ability to elevate makes him a lob threat as a roller. His mobility allows him to fluidity get to the rim. He can finish with both hands. His length gives him good extension.
He's aggressive off rips on the perimeter. If he can't get past a defender off a closeout, he will use his strength to shed them and get to the rim. He's capable of hitting pull up jumpers from the midrange although he's not a great off-the-dribble shooter. He can beat switches against smalls down low in the post. His post game isn't advanced but he has good enough footwork and strength to take advantage of the mismatch.
He's a smart cutter and good at duck-ins and finding easy ways to score. He didn't get to the line a ton this season but that's in large part because he found easy ways to score down low; he had 49 dunks on the season. He's a good offensive rebounder with a nose for the ball, willing to pursue balls in the air, and able to grab balls in traffic. He tips quite a few balls out for his teammates and creates extra possessions, his length and elevation makes him a positive force as an offensive rebounder. Johnson isn't an elite finisher outside of dunks, as he doesn't have quite as much pop vertically when he can't load and he can be swallowed up at times because of size, I don't think he has elite touch, but he was a strong finisher overall. He does have a decent floater in his arsenal if not right at the rim.
Johnson shot 39% from 3 on the season and 41% in conference. He averaged 2.6 attempts per game. His form is OK but is also a bit on the square side. The mechanics are fine, and he's also a good midrange shooter. He's not an off the dribble guy and not as good when facing contests, but give him space and he will knock down the C&S 3 and 2. He even made a few 3's off screens. He shot 71% from the line and had never been a shooter before this year. People will have their questions about sustainability, I don't think he's a natural shooter, but he knocked shots down this year and he being someone who spread the floor and was a reliable C&S guy from the perimeter has really made him a far more attractive prospect.
Johnson sets good screens both on and off the ball, he's a space creator as a screen setter. His screen setting aids him as a PnR rollefinisher, as well as his ballhandlers. He's very fluid in peeling off the screen and rolling to the rim. He does ancillary things very well on the offensive end. He's also a solid passer. He averaged 1.8 assists and will make nifty passes and quick reads in a variety of ways. He finds cutters at the top of the key and FT line, he finds dump off guys and cutters when driving to the rim, he finds shooters off the roll. He will engage dribble handoffs and roll or pop and make shots or find the open teammate. He's not an advanced passer but makes good reads with good timing and good accuracy and has good vision as a passer. He's a good ball mover and functions well within the context of the team on the offensive end.
He also functions well as a team defender. He helps the helper, he's a good and sharp rotater, he deflects passes and keeps his hands up in trail positions and facing ballhandlers, he blocks quite a few shots from behind as a helper. He plays a pretty disciplined brand of defense. He's not someone who's gonna take big risks doubling down for example and straying off shooters, but he does have active hands as a defender and deflects passes with his length. He's really good at contesting shots both on the perimeter and the post. His length helps, he doesn't launch and take himself out of plays....he doesn't bite for fakes often and he can recover when he does. He's very good with verticality down low as a help defender. He's someone who's very good at remaining vertical and bothering and making it a lot more difficult for opponents to make shots around the rim.
Arizona switched a lot and though they had some miscommunications across the board, Johnson is good at executing switches quickly and he has the ability to hang on the perimeter, especially against small forwards on switches. He's a very good on ball defender against forwards overall; he doesn't give up ground, he's got excellent footwork, he's just too quick/strong/long for them to get around. He's a little less apt against guards...he doesn't have elite agility, double moves can catch him out. He's not quick enough laterally to stay with every guard/forward he sees. He has some impressive moments, and I still think he's fairly switchable because of his length if not an elite option down the lineup.
He is a good switch guy up the lineup....he plays strong in the post defensively. He won't be able to deal with every big man he comes across but he's gonna battle.
What makes him a good offensive rebounder also makes him a good defensive rebounder....his physicality, length, motor, and ability to carve out space and attack balls in the air.
Keshad Johnson had a breakout season as a 5th year senior for Arizona and displayed a versatile skill set on both ends of the floor that any team at the NBA level could use. He checks a lot of boxes. He's one of those guys who isn't the sexiest player but his motor, his intensity, his IQ, and ability to fit into a role and contribute in a variety of ways makes him someone whose stock is seemingly on the rise.
