2024.05.14 14:48 level2janitor Hacking Grave for standard fantasy

Grave is i think my favorite OSR game. it's a lesser-known hack of Knave 1e designed for dark souls inspired games and i've been running a campaign of it for roughly 2 years now. i praise it here every time i get the opportunity - i've ended up liking it so much, actually, that i really wanted it to be the default system i use for D&D-style fantasy.
this is a bit of an issue as the dark souls elements (souls as both currency & XP, PCs getting multiple deaths, etc) are a pretty specific flavor, so it requires some tweaking. but i want to talk about why i like the system so much before talking about making it work more seamlessly for vanilla fantasy.
good stuff unchanged from Knave: knave 1e is popular enough here that i probably don't need to introduce it, but in case anyone is out of the loop, here you go
reasons i like Grave specifically:
seriously you should play grave. it's so good

my houserules

with 5e being my first ttrpg, that slightly more heroic-fantasy vibe influenced my design here a bit; my goal was to essentially replace 5e with grave as my go-to system for people new to RPGs. you can find the full PDF here!
i've run this version of grave for kids a few times and it's gone really well. ben milton & jason tocci (knave and grave designers respectively) deserve most of the credit here, since i'm just building on their work and creativity. huge thanks to both of them

2024.05.14 14:32 Superb-Film-594 Sending your child to kindergarten if they have an early June birthday

Last weekend my wife and I had a discussion regarding our son, "L" and whether or not he should be held back a year before starting kindergarten. For context, L is turning 4 on June 7th. He currently spends 3 days a week at a daycare facility and 2 days with an in-home babysitter. We are looking into enrolling him into a montessori school in the fall. My wife is a teacher and will be home with him and his older brother for the summer.
L was slow to start talking, and our babysitter (who has a background in early childhood speech therapy) discussed the possibility that he had apraxia. Our firstborn was talking at an early age, so we felt kind of lost at where L was supposed to be at in terms of speech development and thought processing. After meeting with a couple specialists, we started working with a professional speech pathologist over the last year. She was not traditional in the sense that she wanted to diagnose L's condition outright however she pointed to indicators of neurodivergence and apraxia that she observed with him. Over the last 6-8 months, L's speech and pattern development has made significant progress, with many milestones being met. His pathologist has pointed all of this out, and noted that he is "nearing or at" developmental benchmarks of other kids his age.
A couple months ago we took a tour of the montessori school my wife wanted to transition L into this coming fall. Afterwards she explained that she had envisioned sending L there part time again, and then going full time the following year, holding him back from kindergarten until he was 6. I wasn't opposed to the idea, but thought it was a little early to decide that yet. Recently, the subject was brought up again and we seem to not be on the same page. My wife has pretty much made up her mind that this is the course of action she wants to pursue. I on the other hand would prefer to send L to montessori full time next year, and make a decision towards the end of the school year about whether or not he's ready for kindergarten.
Does anyone have some insight on this? I've read several articles about holding kids back, but they all seem to focus on the late-summer birthdays, where they're right on the cusp of the age cut-off. I've also read about a study that seemed to show that any advantage to holding them back a year was all but negated by the end of 1st grade.
Just to be clear, I'm not interested in any opinions about which one of us is "right." I just want to know if anyone has gone through a similar experience, how it went, and what you may have done differently. TIA

2024.05.14 14:13 LMDM5 Knoxville Housing aka Lack Thereof-

On Feb. 9, 2022, I officially became "Homeless" on state record and applied for rent and housing assistance in Knoxville through KCDC/Section 8.
Per today's date:
Zeitraum = 825 days aka 27.123 months. This is exactly the length of time I've been surviving homeless.
It wasn't until THIS YEAR that my name "officially" has gone from being on their "PRE-waiting list": aka the long-ass waiting list you're on BEFORE graduating to the "OFFICIAL" waiting list.
*Btw, no one informed me of this being their process. I waited for many hopeful months while living out of my car, waiting to be called that I contacted them to get the news of only being on the PRE-waiting list- List. Good shit...
So, I decided to visit KCDC in-person last week to speak to them about my still pending status and ask if there were any actions I could take to help my chances of having a place to call home...
FYI: The Broadway location is ONLY for applying to any of their listed complexes. Unfortunately, ALL their waiting lists are also completely full.
*The Harriet Tubman location is for applying or relating to receiving vouchers for financial rental assistance.
FYI: you can ONLY APPLY for a voucher between their generous hours of 8AM-3PM only on the 2nd WED of each month, just fyi for any new applicants.
All I was told at each location was to "continue waiting" and that I would one day be contacted whenever my name came up.
The housing costs in Knoxville, especially have risen quickly dramatically even since when I very first began applying and they'll continue this trend.
**BTW, they're SHUTTING DOWN our Homeless Shelter on Broadway due to a LACK OF FUNDING (good timing), so yet another option we can all cross off our lists of any places to lie our heads down at night.
Pretty ironic that TN is the FREAKING VOLUNTEER STATE, considering... "GO VOLS", am I right??
See news link here: https://www.wate.com/news/knox-county-news/the-foyer-a-low-barrier-knoxville-homeless-shelter-set-to-close-as-officials-seek-new-operato
Oh yeah, HOMELESSNESS IN TN is also now a CLASS E FELONY!
*You are automatically disqualified from receiving public assistance such as Section 8 and SNAP benefits unless you've fully paid off ALL FEES (up to $3,000 for being homeless) and have fully completed your probation period! *KEEPING THINGS REALLY CLASSY, TN! 😜 (Also, you can't sleep in your vehicle at any rest stops, either. Also illegal. You can sit there in your car for only 3hrs max.)
"In Tennessee, felonies are classified from A to E, with Class A being the most serious and Class E being the least severe. A Class E felony in Tennessee is the lowest level of felony. It includes offenses such as theft of property valued at $1,000 to $2,500, certain driving offenses like third or subsequent DUI offenses, stalking, and forgery. The typical punishments for Class E felonies in Tennessee include: 1. One to six years of imprisonment (PRISON TIME, not jail), and/or 2. Fines up to $3,000. (Also, just pointing out that with any Class E felonies, being the "least" serious felony, if any fines for the offense are deemed as "unspecified" in their books, they then have the capability to charge an offender up to $50,000.)
However, these punishments can vary based on a variety of factors such as the exact nature of the crime, whether or not the defendant has a prior criminal record, and other relevant factors considered by the court." See specifics here: https://codes.findlaw.com/tn/title-40-criminal-procedure/tn-code-sect-40-35-111/
Covertly, they've named this abomination as the:
"Equal Access to Public Property Act of 2012.” Makes it sound so helpful and positive for us, doesn't it? Thanks, guys! LOL!
See below what all is covered, including: **If they happen to search and find any of your stored belongings (likely being at times literally their entire life's possessions, including if they find you've stored your food somewhere) the police will immediately confiscate it, and then you will have a total of 90 days to go to them and claim all your belongings or else they'll consider it as "abandoned property". You must detail exactly where on the property that they found your items, so that they then will slap you with a Class E Felony, charge you a "holding fee" for whatever amount of time they "stored" it for you, also stating that "the court shall include an order of restitution for any property damage or loss incurred as a result" of you or your belongings being present on the state property. But hey, at least you get your items back!
https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2021/title-39/chapter-14/part-4/section-39-14-414/#:~:text=It%20is%20an%20offense%20for,agency%20responsible%20for%20the%20land.
My Story: (if you've made it this far and give any shits about hearing it for the sake of context.)
Around 1 year-deep into the COVID-19 pandemic, I had been living in an expensive house centered in the North Knox Historic District, working FT at a job I'd spent the past few yrs diligently climbing their ladder, and splitting the house payment with my then, Fiancee of 5 1/2 yrs. He began dating a different girl, had moved her into our house, while stating that "If I didn't stop being depressed, he was going to kick me out". Unfortunately, the house had been put solely in his name when bought. You see, my grandmother had just passed from COVID-19, my childhood best friend had just passed away, and I had been informed suddenly that my 84yrs-old dementia-ridden Father was getting worse and also nearing his last days. Not long after, my older sister contacted me acting upset, stating that he now needed to be on continual watch for FT care, so I packed my things, left my fiancee and my then home and moved in to care for my late father. Eventually, I had to leave my job to fulfill my caretaking duties but I don't regret being there for my father but it grew to be very difficult times, as it was for many those yrs. Dad passed away Jan. 31, 2022. My mother immediately inherited the house at his death, per their messy divorce agreement many yrs before. She so graciously left no time after me literally watching him take his very last breath in the bedroom down the hall from my own for her to serve me immediate eviction papers, now forcing me to leave the home that I grew up with my father in, while being raised. This house, I had only 1 year previous, agreed to my mother and sister when they had requested this of me, quit my long-term, FT job, losing all my sources of income in order to live with and solitary care for my father. (Everyone else- meaning my mother and 3 sisters -were all "too busy" to help me out or give even short breaks. I'm informing you of this, so that anyone that ever says to themselves, "why don't they just go live with family", can comprehend how that's not an actual option for everyone, so when the systems are failing, ppl aren't always on the streets or living out of their cars bc of drug problems or laziness or whatever other common misconceptions I've heard from ppl that are limited in grasping these situations for others. That last month that he was still alive, they all "forbade" me from leaving the house at all nor having any visitors "for his health", despite my deep despair from watching his health ferociously decline, resulting in my very rapidly declining mental health and massive weight-loss and over-exhaustion. Upon receiving my eviction notice, I then immediately began applying for Section 8 assistance. I had no one left and nowhere to go. It's like this for a lot of people. Don't assume ppl always have any other options available, is my point of giving so much backstory. Not exactly trying to "victimize" myself here for pity. I'm strong, I've got this. Just trying to get some points across for when you judge another's situation that you don't know.
Ok, here's the last I'll say about all this. Just humor me and try to consider what I'm pointing out here.
Every single one of us local TN natives have seen through the years how various homeless individuals will bravely step into some of our favorite local diners, gas stations, retail stores, etc. Them, asking employees permissions for maybe utilizing a restroom, some cold water or a drink, often after them walking around most the day (shelter kicks everyone out once it's morning), often after being in our unforgiving weather or high temps. Sometimes, they're asking even for a small bite to eat or leftovers from the kitchen. SO MANY times throughout the years, we've all been standing by, as we witness some enraged employee or the manager angrily decline, followed with often loud threats of calling the cops on them, etc in an attempt to motivate them to not come back asking later, as now they see how many of their annoyed paying customers are actively shaking their heads and shaming their whole interaction with rotten looks of disgust.
I mean after all, our businesses ABSOLUTELY can't be taking any risks of "losing their dedicated customers, just BC some "lazy bums" keep showing up, "always asking for free handouts" and "scaring away our business".
Really, it's best to just not give them anything in the 1st place cus ya know, just like strays, they'll "just keep showing back up"...
Right?
Excluding sometimes a random kind individual's exception, for the most part this mindset I'm highlighting here has most often worked as an sorta unspoken "Golden Rule" when we're relating to how we'll decidedly "handle" our large and growing homeless population.
Now that our housing prices have fully skyrocketed, with increases markedly on the rise almost immediately after the COVID-19 Pandemic that left so many of us without income that was supporting our access to necessities. Many, many "middle-class" individuals who were previously working averaging their 5 days/week (ty past labor strikes enforcing our allowance of 2 days off) and living comfortably on their 40hrs/week paychecks are currently struggling to find availability and also afford even a 1br ran-down apartment in our "lower-class" neighborhoods. Most are now working multiple jobs trying to keep up, and childcare isn't offered for free, so it keeps everyone from having opportunities to not only spend time raising their children vs random strangers who are also overworked, but how can you save money when you're losing part of what you earn, just to be able to go to work and not be fully abandoning your children to fend for themselves if left home alone?
Often, homeless ppl can be seen all throughout our city, and guaranteed to be growing in mass numbers when inching closer toward that underpass leading up to the Historic Gay St./Downtown/UT campus/Cumberland Strip. *It's really fairly ironic I've thought, how so much of our income has always been made/spent here, however we're required each time, to first drive through the huge crowd of terribly unfortunate ppl left standing without their bare necessities, often left to sleep outside the packed shelter when it hits capacity, which is always a guarantee. They're not left outside strictly bc they're "on drugs", like a lot have been led to believe.
Lastly, but oh of such an amazing relevance-
**Here's some realism surrounding our cultures' universally pre-conceived (disconnected/egotistical and mis-informed), accepted stigma that states the following phrase:
"These ppl just won't get a job bc they're SO LAZY and just want to live off all us hard-working American's tax dollars...blah blah blah.." Employers won't hire if you don't have an address and the shelters fail to deliver anyone's incoming mail, nor do businesses want to hire a homeless person showing up without proper hygiene or attire or any kind of criminal record. Also, transportation is a bitch. KAT bus costs money, and is very limited on its area services. By walking such lengthy distances, not only can your safety be at risk (especially for Females or any shifts beginning or letting out after dark) but you're gonna be super sweaty and gross by the time you actually arrive to then work a full shift, if you can even somehow make it on time every day by walking for hours before and then after every single shift that you show for.
This isn't any kinda "new" issue for the poor, btw. Don't be such heartless fools, making someone else's situation about "you".
Life's realities can forcibly humble an individual, catching us off-guard for what we'll often end up facing. Always count your blessings and never assume you know anything about anyone else's struggles or how they got there. We're all just trying to survive in this place.
Thanks for reading and hopefully this info helps bring insight to whomever reads this. Good luck out there, I mean it. We got this. ❤️

2024.05.14 14:01 Good_Onion_6128 Just a third year struggling?

I'm in my third year of university and I'm aiming to at least finish my degree. The thing is, there's a postgrad that I want to get into but I doubt that my scores will be enough considering how competitive this field is. I just want to talk about this because I wondering if there's also anyone else whose in the same boat as me.
I struggled throughout my whole course of uni. The first year was okay, and then in my second year I failed a subject for the first time. The thing is, I love the idea of studying. I want to study, I had made plans throughout my day to study. I get excited about the new semester and how I will be atop of class. But I don't. It's because I literally cannot study. Everytime I tried studying, I'd fall asleep, no matter how good of a rest I get before hand. Last year it got so bad that I was behind 12 weeks in a lot of subjects and had to cram things. I can only bless my luck in how I managed to pass everything else, until I couldn't.
I'm probably suffering from a mental disorder that's not diagnosed. I only say this because this portion of my life in uni is suffering tremendously, and it's keeping me from being able to function normally. This year I'm not doing that great but I'm doing better, and it's only probably thanks to medicine I stock up on to help me focus. It's expensive though, and I use it sparingly because its not easy to get prescriptions for. I really want to get a H1 related to my degree for the first time, but then it seems so daunting, the score I need to get for my exams to make it possible. Over 90s, consistent 80s and such. And then I just feel overwhelmed and I want to give up again.
It's still really bad to the point where I can't attend lectures in person because I'm guaranteed to sleep. I considered maybe going to services provided by uni but then I keep pushing that back. Another factor I guess that adds to this is that I travel far to get to uni. 1.5 one way. And I go to uni maybe 3-4 times a week. I want to do better, but then I keep pushing things until its too late. I'm just barely making it, but Im desperate to get into the post grad. And yet at the same time I know that even if I don't make it, I can probably just work part time jobs for the rest of my life and still survive and maybe be happy, but it feels so daunting.
Just wanted to get this off my chest because I have never actually told anyone, even my friends or family how bad I'm struggling. Is there anyone else feeling the same? Or anyone who has some life advice? Though people are welcome to criticize me, please do so respectfully.

2024.05.14 13:54 ICantDecideDude Advice needed!

I'm in class 12th, PCM with CS stream without any additional subjects. My parents constantly advise me to take a drop year to prepare for JEE mains and advanced as I require 75+ percentage in boards, but I have a very important question. Since i'll be 17 next year after I graduate from high school, should I take the drop year and prepare for JEE by taking it as an advantage of age? or should I give it my best shot at the 2025 JEE itself while preparing for boards too?

2024.05.14 13:41 Wrlzo Can i walk out during a AP Exam?

The whole entire year i basically had a grandma force us to get online and learn code off a website. At first it wasn’t bad but I didn’t enjoy learning it strictly off a computer and started struggling because it gave me a hard time. Lets just say I had a horrible time during covid LOL. She basically makes us get on Codio which is basically like a study Island to learn code. She doesn’t know much so anytime we asked for help she told us to ask another student simply because “she doesn’t know”. She asked questions regarding on what our other AP teachers do and how they teach. She also asked us how to do certain assignments. She also graded very roughly, for example, she would see she doesn’t have anything to put in for grades before interims and tell us a week before to rush and complete a WHOLE UNIT. This is code we are talking about btw!!!! She would then just grade that entire unit for completion and the test at the bottom. I ended up having to rush a couple units barley learning anything due to this. Also during the 3rd Quarter I wanted to test if she cared about our work or even bothered to look. I completed the Codio assignments putting nothing in but made sure it said “100% complete” when i was done on each assignment. She ended up giving me a 50/50 and giving me 20/20 for the test. My class and I have made complaints to our AP coordinator and she listened to our cases but it was basically to late into the year to do something. She also forgot to teach us java and only taught us Python which isn’t on the AP Exam at all. I know Im not gonna pass and Im more frustrated I have to go and have my time wasted more. I took this class because i aspire to be a software engineer. I feel her as well as the school wasted my time, and they are continuing to do it. I also can’t miss the exam or they charge a 98$ fee ARGHHH, but if i sign my name and ect and walk out about 30 mins in would they still charge me?

2024.05.14 13:39 fangirl_scientist math pure 3 is fucking annoyring

okay so before I start my list of issues with Cambridge, let me brief yall. I'm in the last year of A levels, and anyone whose subjects are bio/chem/phys/math will know what a fuck up this years exam schedule was.
I had Phys P4 and Math 52 yesterday, Bio 52 today, and now 2 more exams tomorrow namely Chem 52 and Pure 3 for Math. I am so drained I have zero energy to prepare for math even though it's my weakest subject, I got less than 50% on my mocks and even tho ive studied my ass off for math i just cant seem to do it like even tho ik the concepts and have even practiced it i have next to 0 grip on it...there's not even 24 hours left on the paper amd i have no motivation or brain cells to give im spent
they shouldve given us at least one day between exams like wtf bro...also considering how shit my stats paper went i can safely say if I even get 25 on it that'll be a miracle....i got a B in AS tho so considering my current state whats the worst overall grade i can get? fml tbh i wanna die

2024.05.14 13:38 Wrlzo Can i walk out during a AP Exam?

2024.05.14 13:24 throwaway619079 (Non-US) Am I middle class?

I hope this post isn't too far-fetched for this sub, as I suppose most people here are American. That's actually why I wanted to ask here, since I associate the concept of the middle class strongly with the US.
I'm Polish and have lived in Poland my entire life. I make roughly $53k take-home pay a year. I own an ~1100 sq ft row home with a small garden and without a garage, which I bought with an ~88% LtV 30-year mortgage, with a fixed rate of 2% for the first 10 years (thanks to government subsidies for first-time buyers). My monthly payment is about $580 USD. I drive a 14-year-old paid-off Renault Megane.
I save quite a lot; in months without extra spending, I tend to save more than 50% of my salary (though that's been a bit harder recently since I bought the house last year). I don't take vacations often because I enjoy staying home, but when I do, I usually splurge on a nicer hotel.
I know some aspects of my life are hard to compare directly with an American family, since here we don't really worry about health insurance or student loans (my mortgage is my only loan for now). Still, I'm really curious to know how you guys see it.
Looking forward to your responses! :)

2024.05.14 13:23 TheyCallMeRadec My Media teacher cancelled mock examinations for certain students to focus on coursework. Is this normal?

Hey, all.
So, very weird situation I've got on my hands here. My Media teacher has decided to cancel mock examinations for certain students (me included) to allow us to focus on coursework. She's only allowing people above an A grade in the previous mock to continue with coursework with no other interruptions. I was a few marks off an A*. Only 4 of us actually did this well, me included.
I don't doubt her ability as a teacher, she's one of the main examiners for the A Level WJEC Eduqas Media spec (board our class are doing) and has 20 years of experience in teaching the subject. She knows the in-and-outs really well and I attest my proficiency in the subject to her entirely because she's that good at teaching content, but this isn’t normal, right?
She said in her own words to those who got the grades:
"Due to outstanding performance in your prior AS paper mock examinations, you will not be mandated to participate in the June mocks for the Media AS spec. Please use this spare time to focus on your coursework and pursue revision in your other studies. Your predicted grades in particular will be based on NEA planning as well as prior mock performance. Well done and thank you."

2024.05.14 13:16 sweethearts0723 What should I ask in this email?

I’m currently in a bachelors program that is in speech and communication. Within the program, there are audiology classes. This program made me decide to change my major to audiology. At the end of this year, I need to start applying to grad programs for audiology and one of my professors gave me the email of one of her former students that is currently in the exact grad program I want to apply for. What are some insightful questions that I can ask them? ETA: I’m 26f in the US btw

2024.05.14 13:11 Stock-Cookie6967 Everyone were shocked by my results 😎

I don't think I even opened my text-book for more than 3 times in a whole year.
Hindi: I completed watching KOTA Factory the night before Hindi exam, honestly, I prepared for only 3 hours for this exam (Padle Akshay IMP questions video).
Social: I seriously gave up on Social, I was having a headache learning that shitty crop list. I just played Minecraft for the whole prep holidays, I just saw Digraj Sir's morning session video, literally 2 hrs of prep.
Maths And Science: I saw Padle Akshay's video and started watching The Big Bang Theory ( 10/10 show btw).
English: bro idk anything abt the chapters in that, I just made my friend explain all the stories in a 50 minute call. I just saw the format of letter for 2 min before entering the exam hall. I just played on chess.com the whole 4 days (1200 elo btw)
I was engrossed in competitions and other things the whole year, I won national awards, from IIT Hyderabad, even CBSE itself. Everyone thought it's gonna effect my results as I did not attend much classes the whole year too, teachers were expecting me to get around 45-50%.
All my friends studied for hours and hours after school. Literally just study and nothing for a whole 2 years, while I was building my portfolio with awesome wins in huge contests.
TBH even u thought I will get 45%, but when I checked my result, I got 90%. I was more than happy. 9.4 CGPA was more than enough for me. I literally felt like I pissed on my friends hardwork, They all got around 91-93%. Not much more than me. I had an awesome year of chilling before starting a great war(JEE prep).
PS: I just felt like telling someone all this and seek some validation 🥲. Drop your prep stories too.

2024.05.14 13:04 Advanced-Chain4096 Provisionally passed at Q100

I passed today at Q100 in about 80 minutes. What a relieve to get my social live back :)!
My background is 15 years as helpdesk / system engineer. The last couple of years my interest grew for cybersecurity so I passed a couple of pentest certificates (OSCP as the main one). I work at an MSP and do a lot of security related implementations and improvements at customers.
I started studying around februari, at first with the OSG. That book was way to dry to read cover to cover so I orderded destination CISSP and read that cover to cover. That was a good starting point. Further resources:
- Exam cram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nyZhYnCNLA
- Boson practice exams. I think these were the closest to the actual exam I got
- Learnzapp practice exams. Because it is on mobile I would do these all the time but the questions don't really match up with the real exam
- 50 practice questions, great for the mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbVY0Cg8Ntw
I used the OSG to read on subjects that were not clear enough to me.

The exam was indeed a torture like all stories I have read in this sub. Maybe 30% of the questions I was sure about. Some had multiple 'best' answers in my opinion and some did not have the correct answer at all (for me) :). When the exam stopped at Q100 I really had no clue if I passed or failed.
Time for some well deserved rest now!

2024.05.14 13:02 Lalo430 Moving from UK (EU citizen) to Switzerland

Hi there!
As the title suggests I am considering moving to Switzerland in next 3-5 years from the UK although I am a EU citizen so I shouldn't have the same visa requirements as British national.
I currently work in Insurance as a pricing analyst and perhaps wouldn't mind remaining in insurance which I think is a strong industry in Switzerland.
My plan currently is to get more experience (another 3-4 years perhaps getting into a more senior position) and then start thinking about moving however I like having some plan in my head so can prepare beforehand.
The primary reasona I am considering the move is quality of life in Switzerland should be better than in the UK and I'd be closer to family if I moved to Switzerland (of course the salary is also attracting and potentially giving my future kids a better quality of life but of course that's too far in the future as I don't have kids and I am very young still).
My main worries are: - I don't have a Masters but only a BSc, this has been absolutely fine for the UK as masters are not really that useful here (a part from a few subjects) so I am wondering whether I would need a masters to even be considered. I am happy to pursue a masters if I was given a work+ study offer but not sure how common those are in Switzerland. - regarding the languages spkmen in Switzerland I speak Italian (spoken in Ticino but I'd be looking at the German side) and very little German from school classes. Would this be enough to get as a job and be fine communicating at work with colleagues? - My girlfriend is British so if I was to move with her I assume we would need to be married? - can you invest long term in Switzerland tax free (pension/investment account)? This is something I really appreciate about the UK but not sure Switzerland may have it, but again it's not a deal breaker just something nice to have.
Thank you in advance.

On This Day in Michael Jackson HIStory - May 14th
1975 - Michael had a private meeting with Berry Gordy to discuss the Jackson Five's future & after being denied creative freedom once again, the brothers started shopping for a new record deal. The Jackson Five had begun to ask to produce, write and record their own material in the previous year but all their requests for creative control had been denied.
1985 - Michael met Ronald & Nancy Reagan at White House for the launch of a campaign against driving under the influence of alcohol. In the spring of 1984, Michael's team received a call from the Secretary of Transportation, Elizabeth Dole, asking for Michael to give "BEAT IT" as background music for a television commercial and a 35 second radio spot on the dangers of driving a car under the influence of alcohol.
Even though the initiative was initially rejected by Michael, once he meditated a bit, he explained to his representative, John Branca
"You know what? If I can get some kind of prize from the White House then I will give them the song. How about?".
Intrigued, Branca asked: "Like what?"
Jackson listed: "I want to know the White House. I want to be on a stage with the president and receive an award from him. I want an event with children. And I also want to meet Nancy. All that. Why not? Can you get it? "
Branca was given the task of obtaining a positive response in the shortest time possible, which was not entirely difficult due to the fascination of the Reagans with show business. And so, the meeting was scheduled for the morning of 5/14/84
For such an important occasion, President Reagan dressed in a navy blue suit, a gray and navy blue striped tie & a white shirt. Nancy,on the other hand, chose a white suit, Adolfo brand, adorned with buttons and gold stripes. Nothing too spectacular to overshadow Michael's attire: an electric blue sequined jacket, adorned with sequined laces, a band of golden sequins, and epaulettes with golden sequins. He also wore his famous white sequined glove.

Two thousand people in total, including officials, admirers and security met in the central garden to see Michael.
Once everyone was up on stage, the Republican president pointed out that:
"Michael Jackson is proof of what a person can accomplish through a lifestyle free of alcohol or drug abuse. People young and old can respect that. And if Americans follow his example, then we can face up to the problem of drinking and driving, and we can, in Michael's words, beat it."
- a brief speech of just 5 and a half minutes. Then he handed a plaque to Michael, a gesture that he thanked before the microphone with an even more brief intervention, saying a mere 13 words:
"I'm very, very honored. Thank you very much, Mr. President and Mrs. Reagan."

During his tour of the halls of the presidential residence, he showed his fascination with a portrait of Andrew Jackson, dressed in a military suit very similar to the blue sequins he wore that day.
Until Michael's visit, only Elvis Presley, received this distinction, in 1970, when President Richard Nixon opened the doors of the Oval Office. Michael would return to the White House twice more during the terms of George W. Bush, Sr & Bill Clinton

1985 - Michael Jackson received a royalty check from Epic Records for $53 Million for sales from his Thriller album.

1996- Michael visits Chateau de Pierrefonds in Northern France, rumors were he wanted to purchase a French chateau.
The Château de Pierrefonds, classified as a historic monument and managed by the Center des monuments nationaux, was not for sale. Michael was aware of this so his visit was simply a pleasure visit.

The guides at the Château de Pierrefonds keep the memory of this arrival, completely unexpected, on 5/14/96. They speak with pleasure of this moment when the King of Pop arrived, surrounded by his bodyguards, to discover this castle worthy of fairy tales.
According to one of the guides, he arrived in a limousine which he parked in front of the village pharmacy. Michael, in fact, came in a station wagon type car which parked as close as possible to the entrance to the castle.
Wearing a red jacket and his mask, Michael arrived late in the morning when there were not too many people. However, it was school field trip time and a group of children were present. One of the guides explains that he then hid in a corner, near the stairs where the visit to the castle begins, so as not to be seen and disturbed
Michael paused for a long time in front of the model of the castle, located at the end of the guard room. Made in 1878 for the Universal Exhibition, this stone model built at 1/50 scale remains impressive (height: 145cm, width: 250 cm, length: 350 cm). Michael's bodyguards reportedly took a lot of photos and it is said that Michael asked for the plans of the model.
What is certain is that Michael had a model of the castle made for his Neverland ranch. It measured 269cm x 335cm x365 cm. A little larger than the model present at the castle. Michael's model sat in the middle of his living room, with, for a time, a framed photo of the castle on the wall.

The model was one of the objects that Julien's Auctions wanted to sell at auction in 2009, before Michael prevented this sale.

Although shy and discreet, Michael did not hesitate to pose for photos with the employees, who were quickly aware of his presence
Michael also leaves a strong memory of his visit with employees through his visit to the site's souvenir shop. He spent a large sum on history books, an amount which, according to the guide, “is not seen every day here” .
2004 - The Defense team, headed up by Thomas Mesereau, have decided to agree with the DA's Office of Santa Barbara to uphold the gag order in the case against Michael. Mesereau wrote that he and his client support the gag order and withdrew any objections to it made by Jackson's prior counsel.
In court documents filed , Attorney Theodore Boutrous, who represents the news organizations, criticized Santa Barbara County DA Thomas Sneddon's condemnation of the intense media coverage.
"Eliminating the gag order will ensure that more accurate information will be disseminated, and will reduce the amount of rumors, speculation and gossip about which the District Attorney complains," Boutrous wrote.
The news organizations have been annoyed by Sneddon's clampdown on information about the case. They have asked the California Supreme Court to overturn the gag order on the grounds that it violates the freedom of speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
Thomas Sneddon and Gerald Franklin, filed a motion earlier in the week, to the California Supreme Court to uphold the gag order in this case. He argued that the media was hoping to profit by pandering to a "gossip-hungry readership." He proceeded to write in his letter, "Despite the perhaps inevitable leaks, the public knows little more about the facts of this case than that Michael Jackson has been indicted on serious charges and that a jury will be asked to consider the evidence that may be presented to determine his guilt or innocence based on that evidence. And that's the way it should be."
Mr. Sneddon's letter was a response to the media's attorneys that wanted the gag order lifted which was imposed by the sitting judge in the case, Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville. The gag order prohibits participants involved in the case to discuss any particulars about the case to the media.
Sneddon argued in his letter that the news organizations have no standing to challenge the gag order because it applies only to case participants, not the media. He also said that such an order is required in a case that has drawn sensational worldwide attention.
"What is reported as fact becomes the nucleus of intense speculation, conjecture and discussion among commentators, particularly in the tabloid media and the audience they appeal to," Sneddon wrote. "Gossip -- and the 'news' tidbits that are gossip's grist -- translate into income."
2009 - In the last Family gathering Michael, Prince, Paris & Blanket attend Katherine & Joe's 60th wedding anniversary at the Indian Restaurant, Chakra in Beverly Hills with the whole family including all the grandchildren.
