2024.05.14 03:16 tangerinine Tortured Poets - Willow Bowery

Hey all,
First post - so please bare with me.
This tiktok showed up on my fyp a few minutes ago and I am very intrigued by it.
It shows a poetry book called "Tortured Poets" by an author called Willow Bowery. Many of the poems names are Taylor's songs. Also, the book cover matches TTPD aesthetic and, of course, the author's name looks like right out of TCU.
I checked on Amazon and the book has been published on February 22, 2024. - which is 2.22!!! Again, pointing at all the twos!
I think that Willow and not William makes for a good undercover, since people wouldn't normally google these two words together. Also, Willow may be a second pseudonym?
Did we know about this?? What do we think? I am freaking out.
Edit: typos

Edit 2: The book description: "this is not an album not a department just you and me being forced to write an anthology that was bound to fail"

2024.05.14 02:18 rollotar300 James and Lily rebuilding Potter's potions business

Several times I have seen posts speculating possible jobs that James and Lily could have had if they had lived, but curiously among all the options that fans have presented, this has not been one that I have ever seen and I find it quite interesting because at least I find something plausible they could try to do.
According to the story that JK published about the Potter family, they have been potionists for a long time and their wealth is mostly based on that business and that continued for almost a millennium until James's father decided to sell the company (I guess not having children at such an advanced age he decided there was no point in maintaining a business that had no heirs anyway and by the time James was born it was too late to undo the sale)
Taking this into account and knowing that Lily was praised for her skill with potions, it seems very possible to me that they could have rebuilt the family business if they wanted to, they had the capital necessary for the initial investment, the knowledge, the reputation that it gives you to have 900 uninterrupted years in business
and while some people have a strange obsession with continuing to downplay Lily's academic achievements just because she was once friends with Snape, that has never made any sense to me, not only because we have no indication that things were actually that way but because it makes me very reductionist to think that way.
We have the case for example of Dumbledore and Grindelwald who were best friends and BOTH were exceptional with magic, in fact it was that shared brilliance that made them be friends in the first place and above all moving into the real worldm the truth is I met a couple of friends who later ended up getting married who in high school were the best at math both individually and as a couple and again it was that common hobby that made them get closer in the first place so thanks to that experience personally, I have never really understood why the desire to think that if 2 friends are good at the same subject, one must necessarily have been a parasite on the other.

2024.05.14 02:06 OSHASHA2 ⚠️ Beware your Biases: a lesson on Intergroup Contact Theory and why you’ve never been visited by Aliens (maybe)

If disguised under a preposterous or “absurd” appearance, [a UFO’s] effects would be undetected for a long time. I believe this could be a key to the confrontation with UFOs. ~Jacques Vallee
In 1954 the sociologist Gordon Allport published a book called The Nature of Prejudice. In it, he and some colleagues elucidated a link between increasing Intergroup Contact and reducing Racial Prejudice. At the time this was breakthrough research; repeated contact between members of the “in” and “out” group reduces stigma toward the “out” group.
In 1954 this could be easily illustrated by the attitudes of the public-at-large toward racial minorities over the preceding 100 years – shifting attitudes toward slaves and their descendants, as well as the previous 10 years – attitudes toward Japanese-Americans over the course of WWII.
As it turns out one of the most effective ways at reducing prejudice is “equal status contact between majority and minority groups in the pursuit of common goals.”
For slaves, their descendants, Japanese-Americans, and countless others across history, this contact has been stained with blood and tears. But contact it was nonetheless, and our stigma toward these “out” groups declined overtime as they became part of the “in” group. They became ‘American’ and their “out” group identities and goals have become, and are becoming, less stigmatized.
Today, I believe we are watching this dissolution of stigma play out en masse on the world stage. The funny thing is that this time, all of humanity is part of a microcosmic “out” group and the aliens in their UFOs are part of the macrocosmic “in” group trying to get us to adopt their goals. What then, is so unsettling about humanity that they take such a slow-going route of stigma dissolution? Why don’t they just introduce themselves as equal status individuals?
—————————∞—————————
Attitude Rebound and Stigma
A few days ago I made the same post in both UFOs and Aliens. The post contained what I thought to be a reasonable, logical hypothesis that could easily explain away all paranormal phenomena… Yes, all paranormal phenomena. The post got about as much attention in each subreddit, however the reactions to its content was drastically different on each subreddit.
I will admit that I was being a little overzealous in my efforts to “raise the consciousness of humanity” and was proselytizing to some folks in the comments. My B 🙇🏻. What I found very very interesting, however, was how commenters on UFOs were much more critical and reductive than commenters on Aliens, who seemed more open to my zany hypothesis and its possibilities.
Now, I am not a physicist. I can barely remember the unit circle. I got a D in calculus at university. That is why/when I decided to get a liberal education rather than a scientific one. Having said that, I am very passionate about science and the scientific method. I am a nurse by trade, and for twelve hours a day, three days a week, according to my profession, I conduct three to five “n of 1” studies and report the results of these studies to a medical doctor. My job is to experiment on human beings and document outcomes.
What I observed when I made those posts was that one community was receptive and the other was hostile. I joined both UFOs and Aliens so that I could keep up to date on the latest disclosure news. I have noticed in my time browsing these subreddits that UFOs tends to request hard, ‘scientific’ data from posters, whereas Aliens seems to have more interest in the subjective experience of posters. Of course there is a lot of overlap given the content of these subreddits.
This is all just to say that the same message may be received differently, and it’s content interpreted differently, even by the same/overlapping populations, due to the stigma of individuals. So I think it prudent that we introspect and hold an awareness of our own stigmas and biases, understanding they may be seated deep in our unconscious mind. We should reconsider the things we find absurd, for in the absurdity there may be a powerful lesson.
—————————∞—————————
Thank you to those who upvoted/downvoted and commented. Thank you for participating in this community. Thank you for being unwitting participants in this accidental study, and I will leave you with this quote from Gordon Allport:
It is here that we encounter the central theme of existentialism: to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If there is a purpose in life at all, there must be a purpose in suffering and in dying. But no man can tell another what this purpose is. Each must find out for himself, and must accept the responsibility that his answer prescribes.

2024.05.14 01:39 jesserobbins A historic product launch! Will Sonos triumph... or be historic like: New Coke, Jawbone, Rdio, Digg (*sigh*)

I have begun to view this through the lens of getting to watch a company (and individual leaders) I really respect make what may turn out to be a truly historic business mistake or triumph. I'm excited to be part of it! It is irritating that Sonos has done this in my home, with products I actually love. The upshot is, I am pretty confident this will turn into something others will have the opportunity to learn from. (Maybe even they can learn from it, if you they fast enough.)
What makes this a unique (and likely historically significant) mistake is that Sonos, who has extraordinary customer trust and goodwill, used that to do something that directly harms existing, installed, previously functioning customers, in their homes, with no action taken or required by the user to be affected. This is a luxury consumer appliance, not ad-driven business or something. Super sticky customer base. Impact is clearly widespread, although the most loyal customers with lots of equipment are likely disproportionately affected.
It's painful to see the years where Sonos has earned a much stronger market position also a somehow much weaker stock position relative to large companies that might have more of a "mistake budget". It's transparent to most people that they have a lot riding on upcoming releases. I have a lot of sympathy for Patrick and any CEO trying to hit numbers in hardware and beat the street's expectations. It's HARD. (it's in the name FFS.)
However, everything that has happened as part of this rollout has been an example of what not to do. Regardless of motivation or intention by Sonos, you have what are clearly a lot of customers who are feeling completely disempowered, disrupted, violated, and gaslit. You are quadrupling-down on this. From the outside, it looks completely insanity. (And, in the future, when we watch the documentary I doubt it will be portrayed as a moment of "courage". 🤣)
To that end, I was reminded of a few other are some other examples of historically bad product introductions that share common themes to this one. (note, I'm omitting ones that where people actually died like Boeing or the Ford Pinto):
New Coke (1985) - One of the most (in)famous examples is Coca-Cola’s introduction of "New Coke" which Coke itself calls "The Most Memorable Marketing Blunder in History. The company changed its original formula in an attempt to compete with Pepsi. The backlash from consumers was swift and fierce. Despite the negative response, Coke was initially reluctant to acknowledge their mistake. However, the continued public outcry forced the company to revert to the original formula, rebranded as "Coca-Cola Classic," just 79 days later.
Jawbone: The one that I fear is most relevant here is Jawbone - Jawbone, once known for its Bluetooth earpieces and fitness trackers. Their UP bands had high failure rates and syncing problems. These issues, combined with poor customer service responses to complaints and returns, led to customer dissatisfaction and alienation. Jawbone failed to and eventually went out of business in 2017.
Rdio: Rdio was a music streaming service that launched in 2010 but failed to compete effectively with Spotify and later Apple Music. Rdio made several platform updates that, rather than improving user experience, often removed liked features or made the interface less intuitive. This alienated users led to Rdio filing for bankruptcy in 2015. Its assets were eventually acquired by Pandora.
Digg: Digg was once a very popular social news website which predated Reddit. In 2010, Digg released a major update to its platform, referred to as "Digg v4," which drastically changed the site's user interface and core functionality. The update was intended to modernize the platform but ended up alienating its core user base who felt that the changes prioritized publisher content over user-curated content. The backlash was swift resulted to many people simply migrating to a little startup Reddit. The traffic decline was so significant that Digg never recovered and was sold in a fire-sale.
At this point, I'm at hoping that there is an internal document that was widely circulated and agreed to that says "We expect that, due to the current condition of the new release, there will be considerable backlash from our most valuable customers. We acknowledge that this release may irrevocably violate their trust, and we are willing to sacrifice every single one of those relationships and our existing goodwill if necessary to get this release out." If so, I hope that they are proven right!
Also, full disclosure, I bought a single share of Sonos stock last week to track how it goes.

The Great Wall and Wall Street: Become a Better Trader by Understanding the Perils of 🇨🇳 Chinese Companies on 🇺🇸 U.S. Exchanges
⚠️ Attention all traders and holders of Chinese stocks: You should read this if you don’t know what a VIE is. Sure, most of you will be repelled by the great wall of text here (so many words!), but you might want to keep this post nearby.
Hello. You are aware that Wall Street’s bustling bazaar hosts a veritable Forbidden City of Chinese companies draped in ticker tape rather than silk. Today, I will provide background and data on all allowed Chinese companies listed on three of the largest U.S. stock exchanges: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and NYSE American.
I should note that a bustling troupe of 26 national securities exchanges are registered with the SEC in the United States. Most are owned by the Nasdaq, NYSE, or the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).
Nonetheless, based on data from the World Federation of Exchanges as of August 2023, the NYSE and Nasdaq were the top two exchanges behemoths of the global financial stage, accounting for 42.4% of the total $110.2 trillion in valuation traded across 80 major global exchanges.
🖼️ I had a photo of Wall Street to add here, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
2022 vs. 2023
According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, as of January 8, 2024, there were 265 Chinese companies listed on the three U.S. exchanges, with a total market capitalization of $848 billion. That valuation is down from a year prior—January 9, 2023—when a slightly lower 252 Chinese companies were tracked, but they represented a total market capitalization of $1.03 trillion.
Since January 2023, 24 Chinese companies have entered the spotlight of the three U.S. exchanges, raising $656 million in combined initial public offerings (IPOs). On the other hand, eleven Chinese companies have folded their tents and delisted.
China Securities Regulatory Commission
The American stock exchanges witnessed a springtime bloom of Chinese IPOs in the first quarter of 2023. However, this listing activity came to an abrupt halt as the clock struck March 31, 2023.
Why? The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) implemented a revised approval process for companies going public overseas.
I won’t get into the details, but China has rules to cap foreign investment and ownership in sectors deemed strategic, such as technology. In the past, those regulations have driven several Chinese firms to the legal gymnastics of a Variable Interest Entity (VIE) structure—a clever contrivance that allowed them to leapfrog domestic constraints.
However, under the revised review mechanism, every company, regardless of its corporate ownership structure, must now bow before the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to register its intent to list overseas.
🖼️ I had a photo of the CSRC building to add here, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
The gatekeeper
Therefore, although the CSRC touted this regulation as a necessary measure for enforcing regulatory compliance and preventing fraud (which is true), it also helps regulators act as gatekeepers poised to block any proposed listing they deem poses a risk to their national security or jeopardizes China's national interests.
This process is wide-ranging. For instance, it includes an evaluation of the company’s safeguards against disclosing what the Chinese Communist Party considers potential state secrets. But we’re not talking about top-secret black-ops projects meant to be hidden from international oversight committees. No… any company that collects personal information on more than one million users requires stern data security review mechanisms for its cross-border data flows.
For perspective, TikTok has over 150 million users in the U.S. alone and is not subject to the same scrutiny from the Western nations.
Currently, the CSRC approval process is reportedly taking upward of six months.
Audit inspections and investigations in China
You’re probably unaware of the HFCAA, so let’s start there.
The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act of 2020 (HFCAA) is a law that requires companies publicly listed on stock exchanges in the U.S. to disclose to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) information on foreign jurisdictions that prevent the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from conducting inspections.
That law laid down a stern ultimatum: If Chinese authorities kept obstructing the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from inspecting audit firms in China or Hong Kong for three consecutive years, the companies audited by these entities would face a ban from the bustling arenas of the U.S. exchanges.
Basically, either China allowed the PCAOB to inspect the audit firms, or the companies had to change to another auditing firm within three years.
Then, as 2022 waned to its final days (literally, on December 29), President Joe Biden signed a Consolidated Appropriations Act, which contained a provision that will tighten the noose, shortening future timelines from three consecutive years to only two.
Once they looked under the rock
Finally allowed to conduct full investigations of audit firms in mainland China and Hong Kong after over a decade of obstruction, the PCAOB announced the findings of its first round of inspections in May 2023, identifying deficiencies in seven of eight audits conducted by the auditing firms KPMG Huazhen and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Hong Kong. Audits of Chinese Companies Are Highly Deficient, U.S. Regulator Says
On November 30, 2023, the PCAOB announced fines against three audit firms in China, totaling $7.9 million for misconduct. For perspective, that number included the second and third-largest fines ever doled out by the PCAOB.
Why were the fines so bad?
Those sneaky Chinese accountants
Imagine a gaggle of accountants in the far reaches of PwC China and Hong Kong applying for a U.S. auditing curriculum. But alas, these foreign accountants find the U.S. auditing training tests a trifle tedious, so someone came up with the answers and decided to pass them around like a secret note in a schoolroom.
From 2018 to 2020, over 1,000 of these busy bees completed their U.S. auditing online exams by copying the answers from two unauthorized apps with a fervor that would make a gossip columnist blush.
When confronted with the evidence, PwC China and PwC Hong Kong response: 🤷‍♂️
And let me remind you, this happened late last year. Both firms are expected to provide reasonable assurance that their personnel will act with integrity in connection with internal training and to report their compliance to the PCAOB within 150 days—April 2024.
🖼️ I was planning on using an AI-generated image of Chinese accountants cheating, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
State-owned enterprises
According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, this graph represents the total market capitalization of Chinese companies listed in the three U.S. exchanges.
Market Capitalization of Listed Chinese Companies
The number of listed companies has stayed at around 260. However, all Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have delisted themselves from U.S. exchanges, most of them soon after the PCAOB announced it had secured complete access to Chinese auditors’ records.
Variable Interest Entities (VIEs)
Most traders—and that means you—are unaware that 166 Chinese companies currently listed on the three major U.S. exchanges use a VIE structure.
As of January 8, 2024, these companies have a market capitalization of $772 billion. For perspective, that represents 91% of the total market capitalization of all the Chinese firms listed on the three major U.S. exchanges.
What the hell is a VIE?
It is a complex corporate structure that grants shareholders contractual claims to control via an offshore shell company without transferring actual ownership in the company.
A Variable Interest Entity (VIE) is a bit like a riverboat casino’s cleverest trick, allowing a company to sell its chips on a foreign table without ever letting the players hold the cards directly.
A VIE is a structure used primarily by companies that wish to partake in the financial streams of another country (the U.S. exchanges) without breaking local laws (Chinese laws) that prevent full ownership.
Remember, Chinese companies structured themselves as VIEs to circumvent China’s restrictions—not U.S. restrictions—on foreign ownership in industries the CCP deems sensitive.
Therefore, when you hold stock in one of these Chinese companies, you’re not officially holding any actual ownership in the company. Because if you did, then that company could be breaking Chinese restrictive caps on foreign investment and ownership.
That’s why they set up a façade, or a legal entity, that controls the business on paper, but the true power and profits are funneled back to the company pulling the strings.
Granted, it’s not as shaky as asking a random stranger to hold your shares, but it is crafty, and you should be aware of the risks.
Wait. What are the risks?
You need to understand that there’s a shadow of potential risk looming. Potential. Now, don't mistake me for the town crier of doom; I'm not proclaiming that the sky is falling on these shares. Nor am I declaring that disaster is certain for Chinese stocks.
What I am pointing out, however, is the presence of a risk—a subtle beast that might just catch you off guard if you remain unaware.
And let’s face it: Most of you are completely oblivious to these issues.
There are two sides here: 🇺🇸 & 🇨🇳
🇺🇸
Since July 2021, the SEC has imposed additional disclosure requirements for Chinese companies using a VIE to sell shares in the U.S. These requirements include greater transparency about the relationship between the VIE and its Chinese operating companies.
In summary, the SEC aims to push VIEs toward the company behind them to offer more clarity on U.S. investor ownership in the Chinese operating company.
🇨🇳
On the other side, Chinese companies that list overseas using a VIE were not required to register their listings with the CSRC, as the VIE is not considered a Chinese company under China’s law. This is the reason VIEs were used in the first place.
However, as I mentioned earlier, after March 31, 2023, the CSRC established requirements for all new Chinese companies to register and receive permission before going public overseas—even those planning to use VIE structures. That’s why there was a boom of Chinese IPOs before that deadline.
Granted, on September 14, 2023, a Chinese auto insurance platform became the first company that received the elusive blessing of the CSRC to list, and it did so using a VIE arrangement, breaking the long, dry spell that had plagued Chinese IPOs when she listed on the Nasdaq four days later.
However, even though VIEs received some sort of recognition from the CSRC, the VIE corporate structures still hold dubious legal status under China’s laws. Remember, VIEs purpose is to avoid being considered a Chinese company under China’s laws.
So… do you see the potential risk here?
Umm… No, I don’t get it.
Think about it. Either country could potentially increase regulations for VIEs, but if the SEC forces them to be more transparent, the VIE would not be able to circumvent China’s restrictions. That’s one risk.
Also, at some point, China’s CSRC might question whether it’s appropriate to recognize a corporate structure that was created to circumvent its laws.
Which leads me to this: What’s keeping the CCP from deciding to start reigning in those VIEs?
The answer is simple: They’re not in a hurry to do so because if misfortune should befall, it’ll be the foreign investors who’ll see their assets deflated like a punctured balloon.
🖼️ I would've added a nice image or two by now, to balance all the text and make this more appealing, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
If a VIE-listed company goes private at a lower valuation, businesses fail, or there’s a valuation discrepancy, the enforceability of a VIE’s contractual arrangements is unproven in Chinese courts. With VIE-listed companies, foreign investors’ recourse in the Chinese legal system is as elusive as a catfish’s whisper.
Yeah, but that’s unlikely…
Sure. Of course, I’m not saying every Chinese stock will have these issues. But it can happen. And it has happened.
The unlucky case of Luckin Coffee
Due to the lack of compliance with international audit inspections, Chinese corporate financial statements’ reliability for valuation and investment is not assured.
Such is the case of Luckin Coffee. In a bold bid to capture Wall Street’s hearts and wallets, Luckin Coffee showed up dressed in finery, flaunting alluring figures of revenue, operations, and bustling customer traffic.
At her grand debut, the stock sashayed onto the Nasdaq at $17, swirling up a storm of interested buyers to the tune of $561 million in capital.
For a fleeting moment, Luckin shimmered like a star over the financial firmament, boasting a market capitalization that soared to a heady $12 billion, with shares peaking just over $50.
Ah, but as the adage goes, ‘Truth will out.’ And out it came—the revelation of those embroidered numbers caused the company's stock to plummet like a stone tossed from a bridge, leaving a wake of investor losses and culminating in a disgraceful delisting from Nasdaq 13 months after her debut. Luckin Coffee Drops Nasdaq Appeal; Shares to Be Delisted
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of a cup of Luckin Coffee jumping from a bridge, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
Well… but that won’t happen to me…
Uh-huh. On April 2, 2020, after announcing that employees—including its chief operating officer—falsified 2.2 billion yuan (about $310 million) in sales throughout 2019, Luckin's shares nosedived -80%.
This is from one of you unluckin bastards: I've lost 240k on Luckin Coffee, all my life savings. Now I'm broke af.
I’m sure many of you might reckon yourselves immune to a similar debacle since you think you’re smart enough to use stops to escape any runaway losses. It's time to wake up and smell the Luckin coffee. Chinese news catalysts often strike like lightning at night, and the stops you set under the sun cannot shield you from storms that explode in the moonlight. Dumbass.
Chinese regulators can be mercurial
Even though the PCAOB is currently able to perform its oversight responsibilities, concerns remain around the possibility that Chinese regulators might backtrack, potentially clamping down once again on the PCAOB's ability to access audit firms and personnel across mainland China and Hong Kong.
If that happens, the PCAOB can quickly declare a negative determination. HOWEVER, this action would only start the countdown under the HFCAA, giving U.S.-listed Chinese companies a window of TWO years to secure services from an auditor in a compliant jurisdiction or face a trading ban. That’s it.
Of course, within that time, Chinese regulators could agree once again to allow access to the PCAOB, thus resetting the two-year countdown without significant consequences.
What lurks in the shadows
Although the risk of PCAOB non-compliance looms over these financial engagements, it is the ghost of potentially misconstrued—or, let's say, creatively presented—earnings reports coming to light that should scare you most. Or, on the flip side, present the biggest opportunity.
I believe it is possible that there are several ghosts out there—ghastly financial figures dressed up a tad too finely—lingering in the shadows, unchecked and unchallenged. If they’re found and unveiled under the harsh spotlight of scrutiny, the fallout would be immediate and severe, leaving investors scrambling.
And if that happens, it’s not about diamond-holding through the plunge since the company might opt (or be forced) to delist from the U.S. exchanges.
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of an attractive young Chinese ghost woman, implying both the allure of Chinese stocks, but also the risk of getting closer. However, I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
You need to understand a crucial concept. Many traders believe that if a company messes up, plunges, and gets delisted, it means the company is basically over—dead. But that’s not the case here. A delisting does not equal death.
I mean, Luckin Coffee is still out there, alive and kicking.
16,218 stores and counting, covering 240+ cities across China.
You would think that a company like that would not be able to cheat on its balance sheet. Yeah, just like you would think PwC China would notice 1,000 accountants cheated their way through the U.S. auditing curriculum.
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of a Chinese accountant dabbing like a boss for getting his cheated accounting diploma, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
So… is it too far-fetched to believe more ghosts might come to light, now that the PCAOB can supervise the numbers?
I mentioned a flip side since you could specialize in tracking everything the PCAOB does. If you can get a whiff about increased auditing on a certain company, you might decide to play a short position in anticipation of a potential ghost coming to light. Be warned, though, that it’s not as if they tweet out which companies they’re auditing.
If I were to do it, I would research and join whatever digital saloon young Chinese ledger-keepers convene in. Perhaps I’d stumble upon a post by SumYungGuy or another pleading for advice on how to parley with the PCAOB Laowai making a fuss over his figures. The poor lad's in a pickle, you see, since he cheated the exam and doesn’t know squat.
Methodology
For the purposes of this table, a company is considered Chinese if:
  1. It has been identified as being from the PRC (the People's Republic of China) by the relevant stock exchange;
  2. It lists a PRC address as its principal executive office in filings with the SEC; or
  3. It has a majority of operations in the PRC, including a company structured offshore but whose value is ultimately tied through a relationship in the PRC.
⚠️ Some Chinese companies that use offshore corporate entities hide or do not identify their primary Chinese corporate domicile in their listing information. This complicates tracing, making it difficult to guarantee that this list captures all Chinese companies registered offshore.
I should also point out that this list does not include companies domiciled exclusively in Hong Kong or Macau.
⚠️ Remember, this list only considers Chinese companies listed on three of the largest U.S. stock exchanges: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and NYSE American.
Oh, and btw, this isn’t a list I came up with. This info was compiled by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. It’s their methodology and list.
Since the majority is a VIE, I’ve marked the ones that are not registered as a VIE with an asterisk (*). This is determined using the most recent annual report filed with the SEC. A company is judged to have a VIE if:
  1. It explicitly describes using a VIE to conduct all or part of its business operations in China, or
  2. It describes a subsidiary in which it has no direct equity interest but relies on contractual arrangements to exercise control and receive economic benefits from its operations in China.
⚠️ For companies that have been listed for less than a year, information contained in the company’s most recently updated investment prospectus, as filed with the SEC, is used instead.
Chinese companies listed on U.S. exchanges
Companies are arranged by the size of their current market capitalization. All companies utilize a VIE corporate structure, except those marked with an asterisk (*).

These are only 51 of the 261 Chinese companies currently listed on the major U.S. exchanges to comply with rule three. I kept the market cap minimum at $750M to allow for some wiggle room.
I mentioned earlier that the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission had 265 tickers, but that was on January 8, 2024. Since then, three companies have been acquired, and the other one has voluntarily delisted.
As you can confirm, the vast majority is structured as a VIE.
I was going to include charts to illustrate how several Chinese stocks—aside from the ones with the biggest market caps—tend to display sudden rallies, followed by after-hours reversals. It is important to recognize them, whether you want to capitalize on them, or avoid them entirely. But I can't add any more attachments, so...
Besides, it's unlikely that many of you have even read this far without images.
Have a good day.

2024.05.13 22:24 stillhungrybaby Best blogging platform for my kind of writing

Hello all,
I'm looking for the best blogging/self-publishing platform where I can publish my stuff and hopefully get paid. I write short stories (usually around 10000 words), essays (on topics like mental health, food, music, politics), poems, and really just very random little pieces about whatever interests me (a lot of it has to do with the everyday agony of life). I'm hoping to find a site where all my stuff fits in, to avoid having to subscribe to multiple platforms. Please let me know if there's one you think would work for me.
Thanks for your help!

2024.05.13 22:01 Rich-Painting-1323 front porch forum - concerns / censorship

I want to hear others' takes on a situation I had involving Front Porch Forum over the weekend.
As all of us are aware, many school budgets took a couple voting rounds to ultimately pass. While I know a few districts are still figuring things out, my school district's budget finally passed, by a comfortable margin, after voting last week.
In reading an FPF update email for my community on Friday, a fellow townsperson posted a very sarcastically toned statement that pretty much sounded like something we may see over here. Summary: those of us who voted "Yes" on the budget are personally responsible for forcing more Vermonters out of their long time homes, and have made it harder for us all to live here.
Well, no shit. We don't like that costs are going up either.
And given the individuals rude tone, I made a submission calling them out for this, and then presenting points as to why it was time the budget passed.
Saturday afternoon - I get an email from FPF Admin. My post was flagged and held for moderation, and specifically I was directed to edit my post in such a way that removed the call out for the other person being rude/sarcastic.
I replied back within seconds, telling the FPF mod team "Morgan," that I would not make any changes, and if they were going to allow a sarcastically toned post slandering other voters, we are allowed to call them out on this and respond in kind.
And it wasn't like I said that the other person was r******d, or even she was an idiot or wrong. I simply said "It was unacceptably rude, and similar to what may be seen on Reddit." Sorry, it's true.
"Morgan" replied back about an hour later, with all sorts of condescending bullshit..."that it's not OK to launch a directed attack at any one poster or person," "we stand by both our decision to not publish your response, and publish the other persons post. It was a judgment call, which not everyone will agree with, but we're going to leave the conversation here and move on.." Which I took as blatant censorship.
I replied to Morgan later that evening basically saying that FPF has shown its true colors, and that it was a bullshit decision, and then deleted my account. Also, fuck you for your condescending tone.
If someone is going to accuse me of driving other Vermonters out of their homes, but know that they have safe harbor to do so while anyone criticizing that position is considered out of line, Front Porch Forum can fuck itself, and I will be content remaining out of touch on neighborhood affairs, I guess.

2024.05.13 21:31 Question_Informal 31 [M4F] #Online/USA - a daydream

Hello stranger, i know it is hard to find someone compatible, especially online, but i wish luck to all of you reading this post. And if i am really lucky, maybe i will find what i’m looking for aswell.
My intentions are clear: i want to find You. I want to find the right person for the right cause which is starting a family together. The question is: is that You?
I think three important factors you looking for are: 1. Mutual attraction 2. Similar goals/shared interests 3. He is not a complete dumbass
I will start with mutual attraction. I’m willing to exchange pics in private just so we know that this can work and you like my appearance. I don’t want to add my pic to this post cause i care about my privacy. I will be honest by saying it is an important objective, a physical attraction. To make things easier i can say a few things about my looks: 5”11 (180 cm), 187 lbs (85 kg +/-), blue eyes, black hair, broad shoulders, deep voice.
Second most important thing for you is who i am and what i like.
I’m a man of strong moral fiber. I value honesty, loyalty and kindness. I treat people right and i’m willing to help whenever i have a chance, i also care for my family which is super important to me. I see myself as a conservative person. I hold traditional values and i got much respect for religion and history. Individual freedom and free speech is all i’m about, also i’m a pacifist, i will defend my family and close ones with all i have, but at the same time i’m not looking for troubles and not getting into fights, that was never my thing, i like to resolve problems with words, not fists.
Shared interest paragraph is ready to go. I like to read a lot, i also write some stuff, im getting ready to publish my book one day (all i need is more inspiration from You, be my Muse). Music is my thing, i’m going to a lot of concerts and festivals, road trips, watching youtube channels about history, science, cosmos and some other topics, i’m watching a lot of tv series and movies, like to spend time outside by walking or hiking, i like outdoors but i’m also a huge fan of spending time in bed and doing nothing sometimes.
My goal is to find a fine woman to start a family with. I always wanted to have a child, i think 2 or 3 is just the right number. I even have some names for kids, we can discuss it. I know how it is to grow up without a father figure that’s why i always wanted to give that to my children, a big and happy home where dad and mom loves each other a lot and sending this vibe to their children. I also want to show to my kids all the books and music albums i love so much and i want to be for them always to raise them well! So if you are up for that - awesome!
I want a woman who is ambitious, i want her to support me cause i will do the very same thing. I want you to watch a soccer game with me willingly and i want you to invite me to your world, show me what you love and i want to be in it for you, even if it means watching a silly show in tv. Whatever makes you feel good, i want to be a part of it. Support, support, support and don’t kill the other person’s vibe, i’m up for it.
I want a woman that is willing to talk about our feelings and everything, cause a real talk is the most important thing to build a strong foundation. Let’s talk and don’t hide our feelings.
Life is worth living and it is way better to spend it all with the person you love, i want to find that person here. Maybe that is You? Let’s find out.
Also, the last thing - i’m not a complete dumbass, sometimes i’m just a silly boy!
I wish you all the best, cheers!
Also i want to include one of my fav quotes recently:
'Cause when you talk about these things, something ignites in you, and I can see it on your face.
And I don't see that on a lot of people. And, you know, whatever that feeling is, when you feel it, I feel that too.
And it's not just here. It's... It's afterwards. What I'm trying to say is i really like the way that I feel when I make you feel the way that you do.”

2024.05.13 21:03 Hippophlebotomist “Lost Child” or Vanguard? Linking Fatyanovo Population with Middle Volga Abashevo Culture using Ancient DNA Sequencing Data (Engovatova et al 2024)

Abstract
High-throughput sequencing of ancient DNA from Fatyanovo and Abashevo cultures (7 and 3 men, respectively) has led to new hypotheses about their origin and contacts. According to published archaeological evidence, i. e., due to striking similarities between the grave goods discovered in the Middle Volga Abashevo burial complexes and those found in the bellshaped beaker culture, it is believed that the Fatyanovo people may have descended from the Corded Ware Culture. The present study demonstrates, for the first time, the remarkable similarity between the Fatyanovo people, as represented by the Volosovo-Danilovsky and Nikultsino burial grounds in the Yaroslavl region, and three distinct cultural groups: a) the Corded Culture People, primarily from Bohemia and Germany, b) the Bell-Beaker cultures, found in the same region as well as in France and the Netherlands, and c) the bearers of the Unetice culture. Furthermore, the Abashevite from the Pepkino mound (burial id 18) is genetically similar to several Fatyanovo individuals from the Volosovo-Danilovsky and Nikultsino burial grounds. Finally, the new set of AMS-radiocarbon dates has helped to narrow down the chronological gap between the Fatyanovo and Abashevo people’s expansion towards the Upper and Middle Volga regions, thereby indicating a direct contact between these two groups. Therefore, we can hypothesize that the highly mobile and dispersed lifestyle intrinsic to cattle-breeders may have led to the reclamation of vast territories in the east while still maintaining close ties with their ancestral lands. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that the Fatyanovo and Abashevo people likely originate from the same genetic background and are integral parts of the Corded Culture world, rather than “lost children” as previously assumed.

2024.05.13 20:40 McRaeWritescom Discipline. Fortitude. Logic. Y'all got this.

I don't trust this.
Maybe that's because since February of 2021 I've seen every fucking PsyOp trick in the book on the stock I like! All aided by heaping mounds of white collar crime, including the regular fraud, counterfeiting of securities, abusing market maker positions, plus the whole gamut from DTCC's blatant international stock fraud to market manipulation by CNBC a la the Citadel logos plastered across monitors and the set. All sanctioned by the US Government, as inaction from SEC, DOJ, FBI, and other various US government agencies makes them all complicit in all the crime of course, as I KNOW they can't play ignorant about the hundreds of tips and comments individual retail investors have submitted!
Part of me wants to assume this is yet another fake run to shake out paper hands. DFV be damned! I respect the guy, but I've been watching for years from the catwalk, and you regular investors made all this happen, not him!
But.
This saga has helped me with some of my monk shit. Discipline. Fortitude. Logic! I''m pretty Zen, in that I largely won't consider selling until we hit the floor website ticker number. Some of the No Cell No Sell people can flay me for that, but I have Supervillain Plans to get rolling to save the species. You know?
It's been a lovely little foil for my own personal goals, and everyone from Jarumba (sp?) relentlessly asking the DTCC questions to Marijuana Mills for running years, they've all inspired me!
So perhaps I can make a bet to fuel the hype even more somehow?
I won't stick a banana in my ass or eat a whole jar of Mayo, but I'm soon enough gonna beat Shakespeare and become The Second Most Prolific Poet of Human History. (Nobody gives a fuck about a Dead Art Form! Hah!) So if I can beat Shakespeare before we hit the floor website number, or if I can't... What should I bet to help build hype towards a real MOASS rather than what I see as another fake paper hand shake run?
Just thinking out loud here, after chilling in the shadows for a while. Any fun bet suggestions?
(Yes I have written poems about MOASS and GME. No I won't link them because I don't wanna get banned for fucking shilling myself!)
Hope everybody is smiling out there today!

2024.05.13 20:30 Wild_Cellist9861 Gamers Break Away [GBA]

My fellow gamers, for too long has our community suffered the indignation of an intolerable culture that has denigrated, besmirched, exploited, and has outright demonized our culture of unique individuals with a genuine love of a hobby that they see as profitable and progressive. They have taken beloved IP’s (Intellectual Properties) and twisted them into their own personal ideological crusade of undermining and humiliating the core aspects of characters they deemed as “Toxic” or “White Supremacy”. Through the guise and protection of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity) & ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) they have used our influence in the entertainment industry to push their narratives and agendas that have stigmatized our culture with numerous anti-consumer practices that they call “being progressive”. But the truth of the matter is they were never really looking to be a part of our community, they simply wanted to use our community as a tool of activism and propaganda in the entertainment industry as it was extremely profitable, and they wanted inclusion in that division. Ever since GamerGate & Female Frequency, we have had to endure the incursion of forced ideologies, xenophobic behaviors and inferior overpriced products that have never been in our best interest and have been flat out disgraceful towards foreign media.
Before Gaming had become a major source of entertainment, we were often categorized as anti-social or societies rejects where because we found more enjoyment in playing fictional characters and not spending as much time out and about, we never fully assimilated in society (which is a good thing if you ask me). From 1998 to 2007, at the height of innovation, creativity and production, Gaming had reached a golden age in which it had revolutionized society. Hollywood Execs who had ruined the movie industry turned their attention to video games as a source of income since video games had outperformed movies in terms of profit. No one was concerned about gaming, much less diversity or inclusivity until it became profitable. This makes people like SBI look extremely disingenuous as they were not interested in gamers as a community with its own culture. They simply wanted to use it as another weapon in identity politics.
Microtransactions; the hidden enemy to gamer progress and inducer to mental laziness of our community. Microtransactions have been around for a long time; however, it has never been more potent and apparent than in recent years. It has aided in the dismantling and segregation of players on the ideology of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and has created another sub-culture of gamers who have no real drive to be better outside of how much money they put into the game. This has degraded our culture as well as we have become “fat” off transactional gaming but at the same time we have been “starved” of purposeful gaming where our achievements were our sustenance. I am not saying that microtransactions are bad, but when they are exploitative and predatorial like they have been and don’t give gamers room to grow, we become lethargic and unwilling to improve ourselves as gamers. Oversaturated microtransactional games are one of the many reasons why we have become complacent and unwilling to fight against the exploitative tactics used by big brand game companies such EA, Ubisoft, ActivisionBlizzard, NaughtyDog and so many other western business model companies. Western style games were not like this in the past, they had much more depth and actual effort put into them with the gamer in mind. This has not been the case for over a decade and our connection to western developers has been whittled down to just being transactional. That is one of the reasons why you see so many remasters and remakes in today’s gamer community. They have lost their willingness to improve as developers of games and simply accept corporate/share holder rules.
Game journalists also do not have any real integrity or purpose outside of being funded for their involvement in promoting IPG (Identity Political Games) in a positive light to the public whether it’s positively received or not. They are not interested in what we have to say, they all support the same agenda and that is why they are a dying breed. Within the next couple of years, they will be out of the job and more than likely they will not be able to stay in the industry giving how they have responded to past articles that have clearly been scripted on the premise of diversity and racism. Not only that, but most of them are also extremely hostile to the community as they stereotype and defame the individuals that are a part of the community they are supposed to serve. We have been mentally liberated from their lies and coercive tactics as we tend to laugh at their obvious attempt at virtue signaling while hiding their misdoings so that they can play the victim.
My gamer brothers & sisters, I would not suggest the following action that we must take now without good cause. I have weighed our options and the best option for us now is this…...CULTURAL SECESSION. Naturally this is a form of segregation where they would more than likely claim they are being segregated by the dominant culture of the gaming community but that is incorrect. For years now we have been the ones who are often marginalized and ostracized for the smaller portion of our community. And when we aren’t, we’re exploited for more funds so that these companies can stay in business only to subject us to low quality products that coincide with the “WOKE Agenda” that are often huge expenses to these big brands i.e. AAA/AAAA games that will eventually flop for its obvious forced diversity and bug infested product which will undoubtedly piss off the consumer to the point of wanting a refund. Losing copious amounts of capital and stock in the process, not to mention their reputation is permanently marred.
We must separate on every cultural level in terms of entertainment and ideology. We must reject everything from the west that promotes toxic western beliefs, practices, and exclusion from other cultures (i.e. Southeastern Countries such as Japan and Korea). Japan & Korea have been the targets of unjust discrimination from Western Developers, Western Journalists, Western Localizers (The Wokelizers) and Western Society Prejudice regarding their sense of aesthetics as Westerners hate the aesthetic sense of these countries. The reason why they resort to such base tactics isn’t just because it weaponizes the ideal female form but it’s also because they have deep-seated insecurities about their own looks so when they see attractive female characters, they use terms such as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized” to establish the moral high ground. But the truth is, they want to feel superior to that which is ideal, so they insult and dehumanize this figure that portrays natural female beauty because they see it as an insult to their own social superiority in what they believe is a hierarchy of them being at the top of all other women. Because of this and so many contributing factors, their movies flop harder than the Fat Chocobo landing on a group of enemies and their games seismically fail just as much if not more. We must sever our connection to Western Developers, Publishers, and ALL Western-Centric Entertainment for they seek to mentally enslave us to their Xenophobic ideology.
Let’s define Western Culture and its traits. Western Culture/Society is composed of more than several different ideologies that work in unison with one another to facilitate dominance over multiple aspects of society. Business, Social, Political, Technological, and sometimes even Global Affairs are affected by these ideologies that portray a specific mindset of Western beliefs. What are those ideologies you ask?

These traits are so nefarious and unconscionable that I have a hard time believing that anyone could harbor them. However, given the social, political, and economic climate that we are in, those in power who use their influence on controlling society most definitely possess these insidious traits. Everything that they do is all about control and since video games are the biggest market in the world, they want control over it and the communities built around it to accrue more wealth and to use that wealth to subjugate other cultures. Mainstream media is a tool as well as mainstream organizations and sites to help accomplish this goal.
The government recently announced its intentions towards what they believe is “GamerGate 2.0” and now even the ADL has made an official appearance, referring to gamers as “extremist’s”. We know EXACTLY what they are doing, and they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore because they don’t think we are aware of their motives. This is just a pretext for them to exert even more control and we know why, it’s because they want the influence we as a community have to must serve them. So here is what we do my fellow gamers-
“In light of recent events and years of mainstream stigma, we the members of the Global Gaming Community [GGC] must officially renounce ALL TIES to the corporate western video game market. We have been financially exploited through predatorial monetization schemes, pelted with numerous articles of disdain and intentional misrepresentation from game journalists, news outlets regarding us as dangerous individuals and, even subjected to inferior products not only riddled with bugs but also products meant to push political agendas. For the preservation of our community and its unique culture, apart from a few select game development studios we officially sever all connections to western owned video game companies & their mainstream affiliates. From this point onward, we will no longer support western corporate developers, journalists and publishers that do not coincide with the goals of our community.”
Naturally this is completely optional. If you are okay with the state of the gaming community as it is, feel free to ignore this. But if you wish for real change and a break away from oversaturated monetization in the games you play and the push for radical ideological reform, then you are in the right place. Lets sever these rotted miasmic ties once and for all so that our community can be preserved and made better for future gamers. If you agree with this, share it with whoever you think might be interested. The more gamers who get involved, the easier it will be for us to finally break free from mainstream game companies and their associates.

Kilpack Launches Dystopian Military Sci-Fi Trilogy with Battle Calm
W.D. Kilpack III, a native of West Jordan, Uta., had his sixth novel, Battle Calm, published on Amazon.com. This is the first book in a trilogy called the Battle Calm Cycle, set in a dystopian future. It is Kilpack's first hardcover release, but is also available in eBook and on Kindle Unlimited.
https://preview.redd.it/uypg3kt5f80d1.jpg?width=807&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6106b31b716bafc8414bf53a110d47d85e30e61c
Battle Calm centers around Badger, a Keeper, who is the greatest soldier alive. He knows to never celebrate victories, no matter how hard-won, because the enemy never stops. When Badger succeeded his father, Red Skin, as Keeper Base Leader, he was well prepared, raised to handle anything the enemy threw at him. He was the best killer, and the most respected tactician. He knew Red Skin’s Laws like he wrote them himself. Most importantly, he was always calm, no matter how frenzied the combat. These were only some of the reasons why he still had all his original parts. His two closest friends are Trinity, who would die for him, and Korry, who would follow him without question. They are all Keepers. They fight, they kill, they live to kill another day, even when it means bugging out to another Base ... and another. That is life when life is war. They know nothing else. But even war cannot last forever, regardless of the infallible truth of Red Skin’s Law #35: “Under conditions of peace, men attack themselves; thus, there never has been, and there never will be a time without war. It is the greatest, most perfect thing men can do.”
Kilpack said, "I wrote the very earliest drafts of these books when I was 14. Don't worry, they've been revised many, many times since then. I'm very happy with the state they're in now. The military aspect is much more authentic in a lot of ways, despite being a fictional branch of the military. Research and Q&A with some veterans went into restructuring that aspect of the story both through direct feedback and pointing me to the right places to dig and find out for myself."
Kilpack is an award-winning and critically acclaimed internationally published writer, with works appearing in print, online, radio and television, starting with his first publication credit at the age of nine, when he wrote an award-winning poem. He has since won 23 book awards, including The International Firebird Book Award, The BookFest Award, International Impact Book Award, both Editor's Choice and Top Pick from BooksShelf and Honorable Mention from L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest for his novella, Pale Face, which was recently optioned for development for a Hollywood movie. He has been editor and/or publisher of 19 news and literary publications, both online and in print, with circulations as high as 770,000.
He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Westminster University. As an undergrad, he double-majored in communication and philosophy, while completing the Honors Program. As a graduate student, he earned a master of professional communication with a writing emphasis. He was also a high-performing athlete, qualifying for international competition in Greco-Roman wrestling.
For 25 years, he was a communication professor and a nationally recognized wrestling coach. He is an accomplished cook and has cooked nearly every type of food on a grill. He is happily married to his high-school sweetheart and is father to five children, as well as helping to raise five step-children. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he continues to live, consult and educate. For more information www.Kilpack.net
Praise for Pale Face
Pale Face is "pretty darned good. I like it. I love how [Hector] sees the aliens and the white men in the same light. A nice, brutal, ironic twist ... this is good stuff." — Dave Wolverton, international best-selling author
Praise for Crown Prince: Book One of New Blood
"Author W.D. Kilpack III presents an atmospheric and immersive journey into a richly crafted fantasy world, balancing a strong character-led adventure with a wider web of plots, setting up a highly complex and enjoyable fantasy saga to follow. There’s a clear flair for character, dialogue, and attitude from the start, with Natharr's intense presence affecting all who encounter him and making for some really dynamic clashes. The weightiness of his responsibilities and the depth of the world-building immediately gripped my attention and, as the story unfolded, the way the characters’ attitudes and actions were shaped by the realism of the worldbuilding was totally compelling. This book delivers on every promise of pulse-pounding adventure — thanks to the swift pacing of the plot, coupled with dark storytelling, strong descriptive skills, and captivating character development that balances emotion with duty well. Overall, I would certainly recommend Crown Prince as an incredible opener to an exciting new fantasy series, and I’m all the more eager to continue exploring this fantastical realm." — USA Today best-selling author K.C. Finn
Praise for Order of Light: Book Two of New Blood
"W. D. Kilpack III's Crown Prince captivated me. His vivid descriptions plunged me into a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and emotions. I devoured the first book in the New Blood Saga, desperate to see where the tale would lead. So, it was with bated breath that I cracked open Order of Light, the series' second instalment. Kilpack doesn't disappoint. The themes that resonated in Crown Prince deepen and twist in Order of Light. He has a way of making words just flow vividly on the page. On page 106 of my Australian paperback version, a revelation about Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, floored me! His journey of self-discovery weaves flawlessly with the Crown Prince's own remarkable growth. New fantastical creatures emerge from Kilpack's boundless imagination. The Quiet One and Bu, meticulously detailed in all their wonder, are testament to his storytelling prowess. But fear not, I won't spoil the magic! Suffice it to say, fans of epic fantasy, your search is over. Kilpack is your new literary lord. From exhilarating battle sequences to poignant moments of reflection, Order of Light is a masterpiece. If I could, I’d give it a six! Both it and Crown Prince deserve a place on your bookshelf. Trust me, you won't regret immersing yourself in Kilpack's world." — Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia)
Praise for Demon Seed: Book Three of New Blood
"Demon Seed is the thrilling and fast-paced third book in the New Blood Saga ... Kilpack does not disappoint! Demon Seed is a shocking and brilliant tale that will reintroduce readers to characters we have come to love/be invested in. In this third book, the stakes are as high as ever and the story the reader is taken on will enthrall, captivate and excite its readers ... Kilpack from the beginning hooks his readers and keeps them enchanted to the very end. I have to recommend Demon Seed to readers that love epic fantasy! Demon Seed is one that is full of shocks, thrills, and twists and turns galore that will keep you on edge from beginning to end. [It] is an incredibly suspenseful novel and this is thanks to the wonderful author, whose work I love ... [Demon Seed] did not let me down, this saga has not lost its momentum or uniqueness. Kilpack is an exceptional author [who] knows how to flawlessly transport his readers into the story ... the descriptions are phenomenal ... Demon Seed is a magnificent and entertaining book that will easily entertain its readers for many hours! That is why I of course have to award this incredible book five stars!" — RedHeadedBookLover.com
Praise for Rilari: Book Four of New Blood
"Embark on a captivating journey with W.D. Kilpack III's Rilari: Book Four of New Blood, a tale that expertly weaves tension, mystery, and awe-inspiring heroism. Kilpack's world-building skillfully combines politics, magic, and ancient lore, creating a rich tapestry for readers to explore. The characters, especially Natharr and the Knights of Ril, are well-developed, and the dynamic between Nathan and his summoned companion adds depth and heart to the story. Kilpack successfully incorporates profound themes of resilience and unity into the gripping plot, leaving readers emotionally connected. Riliari is a triumph, offering an enthralling adventure filled with courage and the enduring spirit of humanity." — BooksShelf.com

2024.05.13 18:47 QuipAndSage Do I confront this micromanagement in a part-time contract job?

TL;DR: I have a contract job pitched as "flexible" and was told I was even overqualified when I was hired. I turn in good work and meet deadlines, but a new managing editor is increasingly micromanaging me. I think it's to better accommodate her own workload and schedule. It makes me want to quit. Should I confront them and is there a good way to ask them to back off a bit?
I am a contract writeeditor for a local community magazine. It amounts to a part-time gig, especially with what it pays, and was advertised as such. I've worked at a daily newspaper and other publications similar to this one before; I have done this exact kind of work before and the publisher (my boss) even characterized me as "overqualified" when they hired me. It is a good fit for me since I am also the primary parent in my house and need flexible, part-time work. I can only work during childcare hours, which they knew when they gave me the job. Of course, things always come up like kids being sick or spring break, etc. and because of that I've come close to deadlines, but I've always met the deadlines and I would say I turn in pretty good copy.
I have been doing this work for about 10 months and around the beginning of the year, another person who has done this same job for a couple of years at another publication was made managing editor, which involves checking my work. I now turn in my work on my individual deadline, which is the day before the hard deadline, so the managing editor can check it. Lately, every month I get an email from the managing editor that is copied to my publisher and lists all the work the managing editor had to do, such as "I cleaned up multiple spelling and grammar errors" and "remember to do this according to style," and "don't forget to do this minor detail." It's sometimes not even consistent with the feedback I got the previous month. I have done document comparisons to find their edits in my work and it's no more than a few grammar or spelling edits, not major rewriting. This is so contrary to the more collaborative way I have always worked with editors who have the perspective that errors are caught in the editing process, and that that is the whole purpose. Recently, this managing editor and our publisher put together guidelines about style and schedule expectations, and I'm now getting a midmonth check-in. I feel like I am trying to meet a bar that gets raised each month. I am being micromanaged when I'm actually doing a pretty satisfactory job. It makes me feel like they do not respect my skills and previous experience, and I'm being treated more like an intern than an adult with 10 years of applicable experience.
I suspect they want more control over when they get the work from me to better accommodate their own schedule. This is contradictory to the premise that this is a flexible gig in which I am in control of my publication.
When I get these emails, I feel angry, frustrated, and get low self esteem. I question if this really is a good fit. But then I address the major issues, such as questions about the information in my writing or requests to change something, basically ignore the critiques on spelling, grammar and style, and just resolve to do better next time. My responding email is a sentence or two saying "I have made the necessary changes and I have taken note of your critiques for next time." Maybe they have noticed my short, somewhat cool response to these long emails? Do they sense my growing animosity? They haven't said so, but I have noticed a bit more of a "compliment sandwich" with the critiques. Still, I have growing animosity over it all. Should I say something about how I'm feeling and if so, how do I do it tactfully?

2024.05.13 18:24 Independent-Coat-625 Creative Spin On A Autobiography

Hello!
Like most of you here, I really enjoy creative writing. While I was growing up I struggled a lot with emotional regulation and having intense feelings. To help myself cope I would write poems and short stories about the things I was experiencing. Setting them in different time zones, changing people's names, etc. Yet the story still remained true to how I was feeling. After going through some challenging life experiences and pushing through it all, I had been encouraged to write a book about myself. In no way do I think I'm of utmost importance to have a autobiography about myself. Recently however, I've been thinking of writing again but don't know what to write about. So I've come back to the suggestion of writing a book about my life so far. I've kept a journal for as long as I could remember and plan to use them as references.
As for the autobiography, I don't want it to be a standard one. I want it to have a creative spin to it. The same way that people put their feelings into their poems, I want to do the same about my life. Ideally, I'd keep the timeline the same, but I would want to be more indirect and maybe even write it through vignettes. I'm not too sure where to start and would love any suggestions. As much as I'd like it to be factual, I also want it to be up for interpretation and really just use it as a way to come to terms with all that I've experienced and reflect on how much I've grown.
I don't have any intentions on publishing, but this is something I'd like to have and share with those close to me. Any feedback is welcomed, thanks!

2024.05.13 16:47 protoalman Super Earth Command in Trouble - Helldivers 2 and the road ahead

So a friend and I had some interesting discussions about Helldivers 2, Arrowhead, the Sony Debacle, and a few issues that have risen over the past weeks and I wanted to hear your thoughts on some points we came across.
As I understand, the issues right now are the following:
(1.) Players from non-PSN regions are still not able to access the game
(2.) New warbond does not pass the bar
(3.) Nerfs and balancing issues of previously hard-earned weapons
(4.) Some really annoying bugs (the insects but also the game-bugs ;-) still abound
As for (1.) - this is a total shit show and it lacks any logic as of why. I mean, yes, of course, corpo logic is there, and likely things are going on behind the scenes and despite the transparency of AH, a lot is going on also behind closed doors. But it is safe to say that either (a) those regions will continue to be locked out of the game, or (b) somewhere along the line, some workaround will be found.
Irrespective of the scenario, however, the game will continue to suffer from a significantly smaller player-base than pre-May 6th. This will negatively impact on the attractiveness of the game which has its massive plus in the previously marvelous community that was truly international, large, cooperative. The SONY/PSN debacle has introduced a divide that was uncalled for and totally avoidable. Now, we have a part of the community that is somewhat disillusioned, sobering up, either locked out of the game, or really sour about the whole proceedings; and there is a potential other part of the community that simply does not care for anything else but new warbonds etc.
This leads me over to (2.) and (3.) (and basically 4.) - the latest warbond is but a shadow of what people expected AH to deliver. Snow themed warbond that does not give you any advantage on an snow/ice-themed planet. Seems like a no-brainer and a missed opportunity. But adding to that, and with the nerfing/rebalancing of the game, you cannot but get the impression that something seems off. Not (or insufficiently) play-testing updates that affect the literal gameplay of the game, rendering hard-earned weapons useless in comparison.
This problem of dissatisfaction also affects (4.) - there are still major bugs abound that time and again cause for some irritation. Falling through the deck of your command ship into the nothingness toward your planet of destination; bots shooting through rocks; enemies spawning literally in front of your out of thin air; despite your in-game friends accepting your friend-request, the request remains on "pending" for ever. Adding to that some balancing issues (3.) such as that the patrol to player ratio is rather just a constant number that remains at the level of a full 4 squad, or that bug planets being disproportionately harder; or gunships detecting you 500 billion miles away create the impression that the game is currently in a bit chaotic state.
This means, adding to the reduced player-base due to SONY/PSN, and the discontent among players still able to play, another layer of dissatisfaction is added by "verschlimbessern" (German neologism for trying to improve things but actually worsening them) of the game's weapon mechanics. Half of the reason for me (and I think it is safe to assume for other people as well) was the amazing community that formed around the game itself. This game without its community would be but a mere shadow.
But for me, these issues are not unresolvable. In fact, they might be easier fixed than one would assume (armchair general here, I know, but hear me out): hire more people.
The unfinished-looking warbond and re-/un-balancing of the weapon and game mechanics, and bugs that direly require patches, appear to be issues relating to insufficient capacities on the developer ends.
AH's developer team is not huge, and I do believe they are putting all their sweat, blood, and tears into this project, but there are limits to what individuals can achieve. As was with the PSN debacle and the at times snappy replies by community managers that were also obviously just stressed out and overworked, I believe the pressure felt within AH is gigantic and the capacities within are becoming scarcer by the day.
Just imagine creating the successor of a game that all of a sudden blows out of proportions in terms of popularity and hype. Millions of players all of a sudden mobilize, voice demands, and you are trying to be all things to all players. Adding to that comes a major dispute with your publisher, as well as tensions with and between players. And then you are pressured or feel pressured to release new material asap to calm down some unhappy players without having the time or capacities to really think your updates through.
With the gigantic popularity of this game, and its potential for long-term player traffic and engagement, it is hard to imagine that after SONY and Steam got their cuts, the developers are left with nothing. Not knowing the gaming industry, I naively assume that yes, publishers and distributors take massive cuts of the profit. But it is hard to imagine that AH lacks the financial capacities to hire more developers - especially in a job market as it is now, with massive lay-offs in other studios.
Maybe my conclusion is a bit too naive and trivial, and there is likely more to it, but what do you think?

2024.05.13 15:55 notwokebutbaroque New Social Security blog for claimants

Hey everyone. Retired 30+ year attorney for SSA here. For years I have followed Charles Hall's social security blog. He is an attorney who exclusively represents claimants, and he has been publishing his blog for many years. It has provided loads of useful information about the goings on at SSA, claims, issues, legislation, etc. When I was working I checked it out daily for the latest news that I could mostly not get anywhere else.
He just announced that he has begun a separate blog aimed specifically at those who have filed/will file claims for disability, etc. Here's the link: https://frustratedbysocialsecurity.blogspot.com/
If his new blog is only half as good as the one he's been writing for many years, then I would highly recommend that you check it out for useful info. FYI...he's a left-leaning individual, and some of the opinion posts reflect this. OTOH, I'm a conservative, but that has not stopped me from using his blog for years. It has repeatedly proven to be a veritable fount of info not found anywhere else. So no, I'm not being paid to shill for him. His stuff is really that good.

2024.05.13 15:02 Necessary_Wing1142 Unlocking the Mysteries of Grief: Understanding its Profound Impact on the Body

Have you ever woken up in the morning only to realize that getting dressed felt like a Herculean task? Or perhaps you've experienced a lingering ache in your chest that doesn't seem to dissipate no matter what you do. These physical manifestations might not be due to the flu or a pulled muscle. Instead, they could be the subtle whispers of grief, a complex emotion that doesn't just affect your mind and heart but can also take a toll on your body.
Value Proposition: In this article, we embark on a journey to unravel the intricate connection between grief and its physical effects on the body. From the pounding headaches to the exhaustion that seems to seep into your bones, we'll explore the science behind these symptoms and provide you with valuable insights to navigate them. By understanding how grief impacts your body, you'll be better equipped to cope with its challenges and find solace amidst the storm.
Engagement Questions: Have you ever experienced physical symptoms that you later realized were linked to your grief? How do you usually cope with these symptoms when they arise?
Body:
The Science Behind Grief's Grip on the Body
Grief is more than just an emotional response to loss; it's a physiological phenomenon that can wreak havoc on your body. When you experience grief, your brain undergoes a series of complex changes, triggering a cascade of hormones and neurotransmitters that can affect various systems within your body.
One of the most notable effects of grief is its impact on the immune system. Research has shown that individuals grieving the loss of a loved one often experience a weakened immune response, making them more susceptible to illnesses such as colds and flu. Additionally, chronic grief can lead to inflammation in the body, which has been linked to a host of health problems, including cardiovascular disease and autoimmune disorders. Grief is a profound human experience that extends far beyond emotion. It's a journey that touches every aspect of our being, including our physical health. When we lose someone dear to us, whether through death, separation, or other forms of loss, our bodies respond in ways that often go unnoticed but can have significant implications for our well-being.
At the heart of grief's impact on the body lies a complex interplay of biological processes orchestrated by the brain. When we experience loss, our brain perceives it as threatening our well-being, triggering a stress response that sets off a cascade of physiological changes. This stress response activates the sympathetic nervous system, releasing stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.
Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to stress hormones can harm the immune system. Research published in Psychosomatic Medicine found that individuals experiencing chronic grief had lower immune cells, such as natural killer cells, which play a crucial role in defending the body against infections and tumors. This weakened immune response leaves grieving individuals more vulnerable to illnesses such as colds, flu, and other infections.
Moreover, grief-induced stress can also contribute to inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection. Still, when it becomes chronic, it can lead to a host of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. A study published in Biological Psychiatry demonstrated that individuals experiencing prolonged grief showed increased inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein, in their bloodstream.
But the impact of grief on the body doesn't stop there. The stress of grieving can also manifest in physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and gastrointestinal disturbances. These symptoms are often overlooked or attributed to other causes, but they can be a direct result of the body's physiological response to grief.
Understanding the science behind grief's grip on the body is crucial for developing strategies to cope with its physical effects. While grief is an inevitable part of the human experience, there are steps we can take to support our bodies through the healing process.
Prioritizing self-care is essential for managing the physical toll of grief. This includes getting adequate rest, eating nourishing foods, and exercising regularly. Studies have shown that exercise can help reduce stress hormones and promote the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.
Seeking support from friends, family, or a therapist can also provide a crucial lifeline during grief. Talking about your feelings and experiences can help alleviate stress and promote emotional healing, positively affecting your physical health.
Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, into your daily routine can also help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Research published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindfulness meditation can reduce inflammation in the body, highlighting its potential benefits for managing grief-related inflammation.
Ultimately, navigating the physical effects of grief requires a holistic approach that addresses both the emotional and physiological dimensions of the experience. By understanding the science behind grief's grip on the body and implementing strategies to support our physical health, we can honor our journey of healing with compassion and resilience.
Navigating the Physical Terrain of Grief
So, how can you navigate through the physical terrain of grief? While there's no one-size-fits-all solution, there are several strategies you can employ to help alleviate the physical symptoms associated with grief.
Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care by engaging in activities that nourish your body and soul. Whether taking a warm bath, going for a leisurely walk in nature, or indulging in a favorite hobby, find solace amidst the chaos. Prioritize Sleep: Grief can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia or restless nights. Prioritize sleep by creating a relaxing bedtime routine and a conducive sleep environment. Limit screen time before bed and try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation to promote restful sleep.
Stay Active: Exercise is beneficial for your physical health and can also serve as a powerful tool for managing grief. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's yoga, dancing, or jogging. Exercise releases endorphins, which can help elevate your mood and alleviate stress. Seek Support: During grief, don’t avoid leaning on your support network. Contact friends, family members, or a therapist who can listen and offer guidance. Sharing your feelings and experiences with others can provide comfort and validation. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help you stay grounded and present amid grief. Take moments throughout the day to pause and check in with yourself. Notice any physical sensations you may be experiencing and allow yourself to acknowledge and process them without judgment.
Wrap-Up: Grief is a multifaceted journey that encompasses both emotional and physical dimensions. By understanding the profound impact grief can have on your body, you can take proactive steps to care for yourself and navigate through its challenges with grace and resilience. Remember to prioritize self-care, seek support when needed, and honor your body's needs as you heal. Grief is not a linear path but a multifaceted journey, weaving through the intricate tapestry of our emotions and physical being. It's a terrain marked by peaks of profound sorrow and valleys of quiet reflection, each step leaving an imprint on our minds, bodies, and spirits. Understanding the profound impact grief can have on your body is essential for embarking on a journey of healing and restoration. When grief takes hold, it doesn't discriminate—it permeates every cell, triggering a cascade of physiological responses that can leave you feeling depleted and overwhelmed. From the heavyweight that settles in your chest to the restless nights haunted by memories of what once was, grief manifests in myriad ways, reminding us of our shared humanity.
However, amidst the turmoil, there is solace in knowing that you hold the power to navigate through the storm with grace and resilience. By prioritizing self-care, you can tend to your body's needs and nurture your spirit back to wholeness. Take time to listen to your body's cues, honoring its need for rest, nourishment, and gentle movement. Whether indulging in a soothing bath, savoring a nourishing meal, or a leisurely stroll in nature, find solace that replenishes your soul and energy stores.
Seeking support is another crucial aspect of healing from grief. Lean on your support network—friends, family, or a therapist—who can provide a listening ear and a compassionate heart. Sharing your feelings and experiences with others alleviates the burden of grief and fosters a sense of connection and belonging that is essential for healing. Remember, you are not alone in your journey; there is strength in vulnerability and community.
As you traverse the terrain of grief, honor your body's needs with compassion and kindness. Allow yourself to grieve in your own time and in your own way, trusting that healing is a gradual process that unfolds at its own pace. Be gentle with yourself, and extend the same grace to others on their own healing journey. Together, we can navigate through the storm of grief, emerging on the other side with hearts full of love and resilience.
Call to Action: As you embark on your healing journey, remember you're not alone. Take a moment to reflect on the strategies discussed in this article and identify one small step you can take today to prioritize your physical well-being amidst grief. Whether scheduling a massage, reaching out to a friend for support, or taking a few deep breaths, honor yourself and your journey with compassion and kindness.
Prayer
Gracious and Merciful God,
In this moment of solemn reflection, we lift our hearts to you, seeking your divine presence to comfort and heal those who are grieving in mind, body, and spirit. We come before you with hearts heavy with sorrow, knowing you are the source of all consolation and strength.
Lord, we pray for those who are mourning the loss of loved ones, feeling the ache of absence deep within their souls. Wrap them in your loving embrace, O God, and soothe their wounded hearts with the balm of your unfailing love. Grant them the courage to face each new day with hope, knowing that you are with them, guiding them through the darkness into the light.
We lift up to you those who are experiencing the physical toll of grief, their bodies weary from the weight of sorrow. Heal their wounds, O Lord, and restore their strength and vitality. Pour your healing grace upon them, touching every ache and pain with your gentle touch. Grant them the resilience to endure, knowing you are the Great Physician who heals all our afflictions.
Lord, we also pray for the wounded spirits of those grieving, their souls burdened with grief and despair. Bring them peace, O God, that surpasses all understanding, filling their hearts with your eternal love and grace. Lift the veil of darkness from their eyes so they may see your presence's light shining brightly within them.
In your infinite compassion, O God, hear our prayer and grant healing to all grieving in mind, body, and spirit. May your comforting presence surround them like a warm embrace, offering solace in their time of need. May they find strength and courage in knowing that you are always with them, guiding them through the valley of the shadow of death into the glorious light of your eternal kingdom.
We ask all this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who conquered death and rose again, that we may have eternal life. Amen.

2024.05.13 14:19 scsresearch SCS built-in bias - revision I

The text below is about built-in bias within SCS research reviews. I will
append new information after the predecessor's conclusion, essentially a
running summary of built-in bias.
The industry is the SCS manufacturers.
There are two forms of bias within SCS studies. The built-in bias is due
to industry-funded studies, industry-contracted researchers, researchers with
stock in the industry, etc. The study design can have bias, too, e.g.,
open-label trials, because there is no blinding.
The following is part of a Cochrane Summary of their published SCS review.

"
...
Many studies declared relationships with SCS industry, and it is known that
such studies report favourable efficacy results.4 This fact might partly explain
the absence of replication studies and dominance of trials testing novel
stimulation parameters. Considering that efficacy has yet to be established,
prioritising novelty over confirmatory studies could be viewed as an attempt
to skate ahead of the evidential ice as it cracks behind us.

The following is the Cochrane review of SCS.

The Cochrane review of 15 studies has 11 with some form of industry
funding: (11/15) 73.3% built-in bias.

The systematic review of lower back pain with or without leg pain has 17 studies
and 15 with some form of industry funding: (15/17) 88% built-in bias.
The following is a Cochrane review for lower back pain.

Only three studies were independent of the industry; six were industry-funded,
four with financial ties to the industry, likely industry-contracted
researchers, and three independent; builtin-bias is 10/13 = 76.9%.
The following publication reviews most SCS publications over eight+ years

Like the Health Evidence Checklist, the Quality Assessment Tool for
Quantitative Studies does not assess bias potentially caused by funding or
sponsorship from industries with an interest in the manufacture and sale of
SCS equipment. Of the 30 primary studies, all but two declared some form of
funding or sponsorship of individual authors or the study itself.

While spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat multiple chronic pain indications
has been rapidly gaining popularity over the last decade, evidence of clinical
and public health effectiveness is limited due to small sample sizes or bias
related to authors that receive income from SCS manufacturers.

You will observe from the above information that the industry has overwhelming
control of SCS research.
How does a PM MD determine the magnitude of the bias within industry-sponsored
studies? The determination is essential for the SCS patient for their SCS
decision because its accuracy reflects the quality of the data shared by
the PM MD.
Your government regulator(s) of medical device implants is(are) basing their
approvals of SCS devices on studies with built-in bias.
My first principle is following the SCS research to decide; I do similar for
other medical decisions. The biased state of SCS research makes the decision
process challenging/impossible.
Feel free to share any revision of the built-in bias. I share all my posts
with my PCP's office; they are free to disseminate.
The conclusion of revision one.
