"Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds" transports readers to a 2063 Earth, a world on the brink, where the scarcity of fresh water has led to previously unseen geopolitical tensions. Amidst this backdrop, the nation-backed militant group DAGGR has emerged as a formidable force, leveraging advanced technology to assert control over Canada’s abundant water resources. At the heart of their arsenal is 'slugTech,' a technology pioneered by James Broadshaw, intended for ecological restoration but repurposed for militaristic dominance.
The story unfolds with the chilling invasion of Vancouver, marking a turning point as DAGGR makes its ambitions clear, culminating in the assassination of the Canadian Prime Minister. This act of aggression leaves the country reeling, exposing vulnerabilities and igniting a global reaction.
The UNE-EYE satellite is central to the international response, a significant narrative element representing the world's most advanced orbital tracking system. Once decommissioned in favour of privacy, the Dutch reactivated the satellite as a strategic move to monitor DAGGR's movements and coordinate a unified international effort against the aggressors. This revival of UNE-EYE symbolizes a crucial turning point, highlighting the global stakes and the interconnectedness of nations in the face of a common enemy.
As Canada grapples with its plight, the DAMU (Deserted American Military Units) rise in solidarity, breaching borders to fight alongside their Canadian counterparts. This act of defiance is mirrored by international forces, including the Netherlands and Ukraine, each bringing their unique strengths to the coalition, underscored by the strategic oversight provided by the UNE-EYE satellite.
Amidst the geopolitical chaos, a man who had all but given up, a boxer on the ropes, emerges from Vancouver's Gastown. Known as HEAT, this leader of the Grizzly Reds becomes a symbol of resistance and hope. HEAT's story, and that of the Grizzly Reds, is one of resilience, rallying not only Canadians but also global citizens to stand against DAGGR's tyranny.
" Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds" is a compelling narrative of survival, alliance, and resistance. It deftly weaves together elements of advanced technology, international politics, and the indomitable human spirit. The inclusion of the UNE-EYE satellite serves as a testament to the complexities of modern warfare and the critical role of global surveillance and coordination in maintaining security and freedom. But something else stirs amongst it. The UNE still shrouds its use, albeit assuring it is for record-keeping purposes- there is no way to be sure. Join HEAT and the Grizzly Reds as they navigate the challenges of Time, War, Science and liberating their fellow man in Vancouver. THE GRIZZLIES NEED YOU, in this action-packed, emotional saga, speaks to the resilience and camaraderie inherent in the human condition.
CHAPTER 1 - The Blood Spattered Maples
ILLUSTRATED VERSION -> HERE <-
The early morning sun cast a serene glow over Vancouver, its golden rays gently coaxing the city from its slumber. The harbour lay still, bathed in a tranquil blend of crimson and amber, defiantly calm as if aware of the day's latent potential for tumult. The awakening streets, pulsating with the vibrant beat of daily enterprise, transformed into bustling arteries of life.
Amidst this urban renaissance, Ryan stood by his apartment window, one eye still tinged a fading shade of deep lavender from last night's ordeals. He absorbed the duality of the world outside – a peaceful façade masking an undercurrent of chaos, much like his own existence. The apartment, a silent guardian of his life's chapters, was awash with tangible memories; some stood proudly like trophies, and others lingered like indelible scars.
"Eugh, need to sort out this money mess," Ryan muttered, his voice a gravelly mix of resolve and weariness. He gingerly touched the bruise beneath his eye, a stark reminder of the previous night's fight. He wasn't just a boxer but a living, breathing paradox. His undefeated record of 12-0 was more than a tally of victories; it was a map of a life spent dancing in and out of shadows. At 17, he was a beacon of hope for Canadian Olympic Futures. Now, at 33, he was a spotlight in his subconscious, illuminating the relentless passage of time and a road riddled with 'what ifs.' Eleven of those wins were echoes from a past steeped in the sweat and blood of the ring before life's currents swept him into the city's gritty underbelly. There, he became an enforcer, not out of choice but a necessity, bound by ties, not of blood but of unbreakable bonds forged in adversity. Stepping back into the ring at 33, Ryan wasn't chasing glory; he was hunting redemption, a chance to rewrite a narrative that had veered off course.
Today's boxing was far from what he once knew; it had transformed into a digital spectacle, a charade he refused to partake in. The sport now paraded fighters adorned with loud chains and face tattoos, pretending to live a life of crime they don't. Vile symbols of fame he doesn't wish for. Ryan had always skirted the fringes of the spotlight, respecting the sport but despising what it had become - a glorified masquerade that he believed led the youth astray. He stared out at the awakening city, contemplating his place in this ever-changing world, just as the first notes of a familiar yet unwelcome voice crackled from the vintage radio on his shelf.
"Ah, jimmy2piece," he scoffed, the name leaving a bitter taste. The vintage radio crackled on, announcing the dazzling exploits of the heavyweight boxing champion, an embodiment of everything Ryan detested about the sport's current state. Ryan's hand lingered over the old radio, a relic amidst the bountiful thrift and trinket that abundantly filled his apartment. The announcer's voice, overly flamboyant in its praise of 'jimmy2piece,' clashed with the morning's tranquillity, grating against Ryan's every nerve. With a flick brimming with contempt, he silenced the intrusive chatter. The ensuing silence was a stark reminder of his path's divergence from the once-noble art of boxing to a life mired in moral ambiguity.
"Enough of this nonsense," he muttered, the disdain in his voice mirroring the snarl on his lips as he spun the dial back to silence.
*Click*
Ryan was a man of contemplation; opening his balcony door, he let the morning breeze mingle with the memories that haunted him daily. These reflections were a tormenting ritual, no matter the joys and love surrounding him. His only respite was constant movement – hobbies, work, art – anything to fend off the sharp claws of the past that threatened to shred the remnants of his self-respect. He had lost ten years to choices and actions that replayed in his mind relentlessly every single day.
"This 'jimmy2shoes' or whatever...pal throws pillows, a poser pretending he's about that gang life; I can see it in his eyes, he's not a killer," he grumbled, gazing out at the awakening city. This day promised a respite from his underground fights – at least for a while. His recent backstreet brawls, a far cry from the glory of the boxing ring, were what paid the bills now. "At least I've bought myself three more months..."
Leaning on the railing of his miniature balcony, Ryan cradled a cup of steaming coffee, his gaze drifting over the streets below. At this moment, the chaos of his life seemed distant, replaced by a transient calm. Despite his bruised, rough presentation, a certain peace enveloped him, a rare stillness that belied the storm of his existence. His thoughts meandered through the serene hum of the city and the gentle brush of the ocean breeze. The skyscape, with clouds dancing to the ocean's rhythm, offered a brief escape from his turbulent past.
Memories of Robin, his mentor and friend, floated into his consciousness. Robin's untimely death in Dubai was a wound that never healed. The sacrifices he had made to keep Robin safe, only to be absent on the fateful trip that claimed his friend's life, weighed heavily on him. "Why did it have to be you, Robin?" he whispered to the horizon, the question, a haunting torment upon his daily routines.
Ryan was a thinker; as he slid over his ashtray from the stool, he sparked up A morning 'dart' (cigarette), as he called them. His past began to creep into his head, as it did every morning. With each inhalation of addiction-soothing nicotine, his blazing thoughts followed as his brain began to become fully active from his sleep. It was a raven on his shoulder tormenting him, pecking at him ever haunting his consciousness. No matter the love he may have found or the happiness, friends, or family surrounding him. The time to reflect was always grim and consistently unbearable. If he stood still, the Ravel's claws sunk more profoundly; the only reprieve was constant distractions. It's why he kept so busy, creative, and active. Ryan constantly kept moving with hobbies, work, or art. Pushing off the switchblade thoughts ready to cut into his subconscious and bleed out whatever self-respect he had left that day. He threw away ten years of his life, and he relives them every. Single. Day.
"Damn man, what's the point of it all?" Ryan's voice was barely a whisper, lost in the morning breeze. His gaze lingered on the horizon, eyes clouded with confusion and pain. "Robin's gone, and here I am, a ship adrift; up shits creek without a paddle. What good can I do? What purpose do I serve? My skillset? My knowledge? Ive wasted my life, nothing is applicable." The questions hung in the air, unanswered. Ryan's life had indeed been a storm of violence and turmoil, from the gritty days working alongside Robin, watching his back to his hard-fought victories in the boxing ring. He had dreamt of leaving the world of fights behind, yet fate seemed to have woven a different path for him, one that he couldn't escape...
The distant sound of boat horns broke his train of thought. These weren't the usual rhythmic calls that echoed along Vancouver's shores; they carried a sense of urgency, growing louder and more frantic by the second. Ryan leaned forward, squinting into the morning light. The sight that greeted him was anything but ordinary. Dark, ominous and foreboding shapes were cutting through the waters toward the Seawall – military-grade ships that seemed like phantoms against the sun's bright backdrop.
"What the...?" Ryan murmured, a wry smile touching his lips as he recalled a line from a 1930s radio show. "Ah yes, the 'Anti-Frackers' upping their game, bravo!" He often found solace in humour, a shield against the world's harsh realities. Ryan was an unbreakable anvil to the world, always struck to sharpen others' steel. But what about his iron resolve? He bore the burdens so others didn't have to, a silent guardian shouldering the world's weight in stoic silence. Yet beneath that armour of stoicism beat the heart of a man grappling with his vulnerabilities, a man with a core as soft as it was intense.
Just like that- The world as we knew it, changed forever.
The morning's peace shattered abruptly as sirens wailed into life, slicing through the air with a sense of impending doom. The tranquil dawn was now a backdrop to a nightmare unfolding in real time. Ryan's eyes, mirroring the turbulent hues of a stormy sea, narrowed in primal alertness. These were not friendly vessels coming to grace the city's harbour; they were harbingers of chaos, their arrival a silent scream in the gardens of Vancouver's tranquility. As the city around him carried on, blissfully unaware of the looming threat, Ryan's mind shifted into high gear, honed by years of confrontation, conflict and reading other peoples intentions. He understood the unspoken language of death, the subtle shift in the air that preluded catastrophe. The serene calm that had greeted the day now seemed like the deceptive stillness before a devastating storm.
PFFFFT~~
Ryan's coffee ejected out his mouth, a clean mist dispersed, dancing in the ocean winds.
His eyes widened in shock. "That... No, that's not right. That honeycomb structure on the bow – that's rumoured military tech, not something you'd find on a civilian vessel. That's definitely not one of our decommissioned ships; Canada has always had a modest military budget- It's not the U.S. either; they've moved on to those massive city carriers," he muttered, recalling the recent unveiling of the U.S.'s latest naval behemoth designed to be a self-sustaining war ecosystem.
"These are destroyers...carriers...and what in the world are those landing crafts?" His voice trailed off as a wave of realization washed over him. A heavy breath escaped his lips, his heartbeat thundering in unison with a growing sense of dread. This kind of military might, sleek and menacing, was straight out of the pages of a dystopian novel. Ryan's pulse quickened, adrenaline coursing through his veins, mingling with an unsettling fear. Vancouver, with its serene beauty and peaceful reputation, was the last place one would expect a military invasion. Yet, as he stood there, the city around him persevered in blissful ignorance. Laughter and the sounds of daily life echoed up to his balcony, starkly juxtaposed against the darkening horizon of his thoughts.
Something sinister was unfolding, and he felt an urgent need to act. "Ah, damn it!" he exclaimed, frustration boiling over as he hurled his mug to the ground, where it shattered into razer sharp ceramic shards—a glimpse of futures past.
The walls of Ryan's apartment, once a gallery of memories from a life half-lived, now felt like they were closing in on him. The space that had been his refuge, adorned with mementos of a tumultuous past, suddenly felt like a prison. He felt trapped, not by physical barriers, but by the weight of the unfolding crisis. Who could he call? Who would believe him about an impending military assault? Was there even time?
Each option seemed as hopeless as the next, leaving him feeling powerless. His fists, which had once brought him victory in the ring, now seemed futile in the face of this immense and unknown threat.
BOOM
A thunderous crash tore through the city's fabric, piercing the veil of laughter and routine. Giggles changed to Shrieks, the buzzing of cars in the city turned screeching of panicked tires. It was a boom resonating with such force that it seemed to shake the very resolve of the most robust steel, a sound that demands attention and captivates a person, a sound of death; it rattles you to the bone. This explosion marked a pivotal moment that would forever alter the course of Vancouver's history and, indeed, the world's.
The resounding echo of the first explosion heralded a declaration of war on all that was ordinary. In Ryan, the shockwave ignited a transformation. Despair morphed into an unyielding determination, a fire kindled deep within. His skin prickled, each hair standing on end as if his nerves were braille, spelling out the moment's urgency.
"Are they firing at us?" Ryan's voice was a mix of disbelief and rising panic. The thought seemed almost too surreal to entertain. He hesitated momentarily, grappling with the reality of the situation. The explosion's roar, so fierce it shook the foundations of his apartment, jolted him back to the present. Racing back to his balcony, what he saw confirmed his darkest fears.
The ships in the harbour were no longer silent, ominous spectators; they had unleashed their fury, sending plumes of smoke and debris skyward. Vancouver's skyline, once a proud testament to peace and progress, now served as a harrowing backdrop to an unfolding apocalypse. Below, the streets descended into chaos. People scattered in a frantic attempt to escape, their screams piercing the air, a chorus of dawning terror.
Ryan's heart pounded against his chest, each beat a call to action. He was no hero, never the 'good guy' in his story, but he did value life above all. Standing there, witnessing his city being torn apart, he knew he couldn't remain a passive observer. Indecision and shock gave way to resolve.
"MOTHA FU-" he cursed, his words lost in the burst of an explosion, spotted at the last second.
The world around him had erupted into a maelstrom of fire and fury.
An air burst shell detonated with ferocious intensity a mere 50 meters from Ryan's sanctuary. The explosion ripped through the building, an unforgiving hatred that jolted reality itself. The blast wave, a monstrous force of destruction, assaulted his apartment, shattering the windows with an ease that mocked Vancouver's fragility. Glass shards, transformed into lethal projectiles, hurtled through the air with a hunter's precision, each piece seeking its target. Instinctively, Ryan lunged for cover, his only protection a vintage oak promotional board, a relic of a bygone era. This wooden guardian, decorated with the iconic image of Stan Lee, stood as a stoic defender, a symbol of comic heroism now repurposed to shield flesh and blood from the brutal onslaught.
A low hum erupts from the depths of his being as the fireball swirled around him. "Breathe... I can't... don't fall asleep... don't...sleep..." he whispered, fighting the encroaching darkness. His cobalt eyes, glazing over open, fighting to the last light, flickered between consciousness and oblivion. The distant, muffled voices of mentors past echoed in his mind, a fading chorus in the theatre of his memories. Ryan looked to his left, cast one last lingering look at the Vancouver sky, a canvas of blue that seemed so distant now. As his vision began to narrow, a tunnel drawing him away from the light, Ryan felt the grip of darkness pulling him under heavy, yet weightless. Once so vivid and alive, the world around him was fading into shadows.
Amid shrapnel-induced unconsciousness, Ryan's mind catapulted him back to a pivotal moment from his youth – the Ontario Canadian Olympic Trials.
The stadium's noise swirled around him, but it was an entirely different world within the ring. There, it was just Ryan and his opponent, every move a testament to the sacrifices he and Robin(Ryan's longtime mentor both inside, and outside the ring) had made together.
Ryan's style in the ring was unique, a blend of calculated ferocity in speed and agility. He adopted the elusive, angular movements that Robin had honed while serving alongside the hardened Ukrainians on the frontlines of Kyiv. This style was compelling and unpredictable, frustrating his opponents with swift and efficient strikes. Ryan's ability to slip away from counters, almost serpentine in its execution, left them grasping at straws.
Point fighting for the Olympics was a system that worked well with Ryan's style but not necessarily with his mindset. Ryan was a fighter at heart, and sometimes, when pushed, the disciplined techniques would give way to a rawer form of combat. Robin, who always believed in Ryan's potential, saw this as his greatest fault and biggest asset to "push past." In his gruff but encouraging voice, Robin would often spew "The stink in that mind, You've got a head on you that'd make an onion cry," highlighting Ryan's occasionally impulsive nature, and inability to control his emotions when it mattered. This characteristic made Ryan fearless in the ring but also sloppy, open, and vulnerable. It often led him into trouble outside of the solace in prizefighting.
In these trials, Ryan's physical attributes – his slender frame, broad shoulders, wide back and a peculiarly long wingspan that gave him an imposing presence in his weight class – it made him stand out. His frame synchronized with his style, creating a truly unique spectacle of genetic gifts, hard work, and skill.
These memories blended nostalgia and pain as they flickered through Ryan's mind. They were reminders of a path once trodden, a journey shaped by the influence of a mentor and the determination of a fighter's spirit.
As the Olympic Trials set to begin, Robin looked to Ryan to instill confidence for his upcoming bouts, but Ryan was in his element. It was fight day, the fun day, the day to show off all of the hard work. Ryan had confidence, and his style in the ring displayed it in full. He moved with an angular rhythm that was both art and battle – slipping, landing a quick stiff counter cross, then gracefully stepping out of reach inches from returning fire. He made it look fun and easy, as if playing with his prey before fangs clench throat, delivering the killing bite. Looking closer, you can only see fire and determination in his bright eyes. He found purpose in the beautiful science of boxing. His strategy was that of a technical boxer, The Counterpuncher; 1. To bait his opponent into committing, then counter, fight long, fight smart. 2. Beat em' up, Frustrate em', then start slinging the heat in the uppercuts and lead hooks.
The bell rang and the fight was officially underway. Ryan controlled the ring with his long frame. Each exchange was rapid yet controlled, a dance of precise strikes and evasive maneuvers. The world's complexities faded in these moments, leaving only Ryan and the pure essence of the sport he loved. He felt invincible, a force of nature within the confines of the ring. To Ryan, the fight was more than a competition; it was a performance, an exhilarating escape from the mundane. It was true Purpose.
The intensity of the round reached a frustrating outburst by his opponent, who grabbed Ryan by the back of his head– 'SPLIT' called by the referee, his hand placed between them. A judge calls for a correction, catching the referee's attention only for a split second. In this second, Ryan's Opponent saw an opportunity. Lifting his head to move away, Ryan locks eyes with his Opponent, sporting a grin and delivering a sly headbutt as a parting gift. It's against the rules, but part of the game's harsh reality if gone unnoticed. Expelling energy and detesting it was a waste of fuel. It was a jolting reminder of "at all times"(protect yourself), a stark contrast to the discipline and respect Ryan upheld, starting his boxing journey in Thailand under "Muay Thai" rules, ideology of the worrior spirit and discipline. There was a sense of Honor in Lumpinee Stadium.
The outcome of these unsavoury tactics here is an advantage for the opponent. Ryan's inner pools erupt, his mind swirled with raging white waters, crashing and colliding against each other, two oceans with opposite currents meeting in his consciousness. His once technical thoughts, muscle memory mixed with fight iq burst with flames, erupting and incinerating all strategy in his path. His eyes widened, open like he'd found his primal genetic ancestry hidden deep within. The slaughter and the war of history. The bloodshed of 1000 lifetimes. He felt it all. Manic in thought. Ryan wanted to take his glove off and rip his cheeks open from the inside out--
BREAK - Ryan snaps back into it, erupting in stoic, silent, primal rage.

The fight escalated, Ryan's disciplined technique unravelled under the seething tide of his rage. The finesse and agility that once defined his footwork gave way to a heavier, more aggressive stance. His feet, usually light and swift under his commanding frame, now felt anchored to the floor, each step driven more by fury than finesse. This transformation in style played perilously into his opponent's advantage. Ryan, usually a master of stick-and-move tactics, found himself engaging in close-quarter brawls, trading his advantage for a risky gamble. His in-and-out maneuvers, once a blur of grace, turned into brutish, in-the-pocket exchanges. This was a terrain where his more muscular and compact opponent had the upper hand. A raw, primal contest of power replaced the tactical dance that Ryan excelled at. Ryan's precise strikes became wild swings, his movements predictable to his seasoned adversary. Seizing the moment, the opponent unleashed a devastating barrage of inside hooks with their compact frame. A vicious right hook, lands clean in the exchange, thrown with the grace of a milkbag, the power hooks brute force, cut through Ryan's defences. The blow landed with a bone-jarring impact, sending a shockwave through Ryan's frame. His world spun as he stumbled, his once dominant presence in the ring now faltering under the weight of his unchecked emotions.
The ground rushed up to meet him as he crashed onto the canvas, the taste of iron and the sting of defeat mingling in his mouth. The crowd's roar faded into a distant echo, a stark reminder of how quickly the tides of battle could turn. Robin's voice sliced through the ringing from the corner, resonating with a force that commanded attention.
"Get your shit together, JUMPIN JESUS RYAN! HEART OF GOLD AND HEAD OF STONE – GET UP, YOU LITTLE COWARD! YOU'RE LETTING IT WIN, AGAIN! STOP THIS ONION HEAD NONSENSE AND DANCE, BOX THIS FELLA – YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS, ACT LIKE IT, BELIEVE IN IT!"
His words were more than just a call to action; they were a lifeline thrown into the stormy seas of Ryan's mind. Each syllable was drenched in the raw, unfiltered wisdom that only a life spent in the cauldron of combat could forge. Robin's tone was a volatile cocktail of fury and concern, the urgency palpable in his voice. His palms crashed against the ring mat; each hit thunderous punctuation to his fiery sermon.
"You've got the talent, kid, but it's as good as ash if you keep burning it to the ground. I'M HERE FOR YOU, IM RIGHT HERE. SNAP OUT OF IT AND BOX THIS PLASTIC PATTY! MOVE GOD DAMNIT, GET UP!"
On the canvas, Ryan lay dazed, the echo of Robin's voice ringing in his ears. It was more than a mere pep talk; it was a wake-up call that struck a chord deep within him. Amidst the haze of the crowd murmurs and the pulsating pain that coursed through his body, clarity began to emerge. Lying there, Ryan grasped the essence of Robin's message –
"coward? letting it win? Playing my ego are ya Robin...hes right though. Im throwing this shit away."
This moment, sprawled on the canvas under the glaring lights and the crowd's gaze, became a crucible of transformation. The raw emotion and the hard-hitting truth in Robin's words ignited a spark in Ryan. It was time to rise, shake off the shadows of rage, and embrace a fighter's true spirit like he had learned in Thailand – not just with fists but with heart and mind in unison.
Staggered yet stirred by the dual impact of the physical hit and Robin's piercing words, A padded fist crushed into the rings canvas, followed by a kneee and the eruption of the crowd. Ryan was back, and he began to pull himself up from the canvas. His resolve, momentarily dimmed, now reignited with a fierce, clear, calculated intensity. Memories of the gruelling hours spent in the gym flooded back to him – the relentless sparring sessions, the time spent in Thailand, the sweat and toil, and the invaluable lessons etched into his being under Robin's stern tutelage.
With a renewed spirit, Ryan stepped back into the battle, his movements now embodying controlled power and a fluidity to his step. He recalled his time fighting beside the backdrop of the "Sarama" a traditional Thai music played when in combat. The times of learning to move, fight with the music, to flow, to be fluid, to be concise. Ryan finally put it all together in the heat of battle. He had merged his inherent ferocity with the disciplined technique that Robin relentlessly drilled into him, and the mindfull practises of the years he spent under Burklerk Pinsinchai in the jungles of Chiang Mai. His style was now fully displayed, raw and visceral yet refined by countless hours of practice in mind, body and spirit.
The final rounds bell clang to a start in a clinic of skill and sheer willpower. Ryan, driven by a blend of desperation and unwavering determination, unleashed a barrage of calculated and explosive strikes. Each punch and maneuver was a nod to the efficient, no-nonsense Ukrainian style that Robin had imparted to him. Ryan moved rhythmically across the mat, steps measured and precise, executing short, angular movements and deft outside counterpunches. He had returned to his element – the dance of combat, where he felt most alive, a symphony of movement where every step and punch was a testament to his life's journey and experiences as a human being first, and as a fighter second.
In this wake-up call, Ryan reinvigorated and reminded himself of his love for the sport, the exhilarating blend of art and athleticism. He was not just fighting to win; he was celebrating boxing, combat, honouring the path he had walked with Robin, and reclaiming what it meant to be a true fighter through Burklurk Pinsinchai's Teachings.
The round pressed on, and Ryan executed his maneuvers with a surgeon's precision. First;
-- The counterpuncher; a display in timing and accuracy, delivered with the full force of training and innate skill. --
  1. He deftly slipped his opponent's cross, a move as fluid as it was swift.
  2. He angled off, creating a space wide enough for his next move.
  3. With an almost predatory precision, Ryan unleashed a powerful right cross, targeting his opponent's cheek from the angle he had just created. But Ryan wasn't done yet.
  4. He slipped out again, evading any potential counter from his disoriented opponent. The rhythm, he danced in and out with his precise timing, perfected down to inches and angles.
  5. In a final, decisive movement of the exchange, Ryan slipped in. He timed his step with a long cross that came off-beat, catching his opponent utterly off-guard. The punch landed with a satisfying impact, culminating in a perfectly executed combination. As he watched his opponent stagger, Ryan couldn't help but think, 'cya sleepy boi,' a silent acknowledgment of his dominance in this singular exchange.
This sequence was a statement. Ryan was not only back in the fight but also commanding it.
ONE!…TWO!…THREE!…FOUR!…FIVE!…SIX!...SEVEN!..EIGHT!
Ryan's opponent stands, admirable, but futile, driven by sheer will but hampered by sluggish movements, the man rose to his feet, it was clear the fight was reaching its zenith.
The opponent, gathering his remaining strength for a final stand, launched a jab, a last-ditch effort relying more on brute force than finesse. But this was a fatal mistake in Ryan's world – playing right into what Ryan was best at. Counters.
Ryan read the move with the clarity of a seasoned fighter. As the jab came, he effortlessly slipped to the right, evading the punch with a short angular step that spoke of his ring intelligence. Instantly, he countered with the same sharp cross from his right hand, followed by a devastating hook that cut through the air with lethal intent in his left. Grasping at straws, reeling from the counter, Ryans opponent threw a desperate, looping last stand punch, Ryan dipped down and left, rolling the punch with an elegance that made it seem almost effortless. He was Hunting for the Kill Shot. Seizing the moment, Ryan unleashed a ferocious left uppercut, the force of the blow lifting his opponent's chin skyward. He followed up with a right overhand, but just before impact, he halted the punch. There was no need for it; his opponent was already collapsing, the "Lights were on, but no one was Home". The fight was effectively over, Ryan's last combination is the final note, a crescendo that echoed through the ring.
As his opponent hit the canvas, the crowd erupted. Ryan stood in the center of the ring, his chest heaving, every fibre of his being alight with the thrill of victory. This wasn't just a win; it was a performance, a display of skill, heart, and the indomitable spirit of a fighter who had walked through fire and flames to the otherside and emerge victorious.
The final bell Rings with not a single chair in the arena warm; a thunderous clap erupts from the crowd. It was more than just applause; it was an acknowledgment of a battle fiercely fought by both men. In that moment ringside, in a triumphant victory, Ryan and Robin shared a look that spoke volumes, a connection far beyond the usual bounds of mentor and protégé. Their bond, tempered in the crucible of hardship and struggle, was now sealed in the glory of this defining triumph.
Standing amidst the cheers and the adrenaline-fueled euphoria, Ryan found himself momentarily lost in the tide of memories. It was a poignant reminder of the journey that had brought him here, a path marked by triumphs and losses. Robin's teachings transcended the confines of boxing; they were life lessons imprinted deep onto him. Ryan began to slowly step out of the ring; the weight of these reflections settled upon him. The victory was sweet, but it carried the weight of all sacrificed to achieve it. Robin's presence was felt strongly, a guiding force that continued to shape his path, illuminating the way forward even in the most challenging times.

People seem to have mixed opinions about the names on Utah's official team name survey.
I've seen a lot of comments/suggestions about other team names, five of which I think are quite good, and genuinely better than the options in the survey. I present them to you below, in no particular order:

Utah Claws

Utah is famous for raptors, but "Raptors" obviously won't fly due to Toronto's NBA team of the same name and the branding issues that would cause. But "Claws" or "Claw" rhymes with the state name, and sets things up nicely to be dinosaur-themed anyway. Plus, White Claw sponsorship opportunities? Great way to compete with Seattle's favorite rum brand and shed the Utah teetotaler stereotype. The mascot can totally still be a Utahraptor, too - "Claws" gives the branding team a lot to work with, and they could even go in a mountain lion or bear-related direction with it, but I think those nerds in SLC would love a good dino-themed team. And if they get the brand just right, their players may well start demanding No-Movement Clawses.

Utah Buzz

Bees factor significantly into Utah's culture - both "Swarm" and "Hive" made the cut to get into the 20-name survey. But those names have issues - for example, "Utah Swarm" sounds like "Utah's Warm" (which we know is a lie). If Utah wanted to go with the double-Z tradition established by the Jazz, "Buzz" would fit like a glove. However, the name "Buzz" has some murky history, as a baseball team from Salt Lake apparently used the name and ended up renaming themselves after a legal settlement with Georgia Tech back in 2001. That said, "buzzing" is very much a good word in hockey and would allow the team to get creative with the bee theme and fan experience. You can keep "Swarm" around as the name for the fanbase, and call the arena the "Hive". A goal horn that somehow sounds like millions of buzzing bees would be both terrifying and awesome.

Utah Moguls

"Black Diamonds" made the cut for the 20-name list, but if the team wants to go the skiing route, "Moguls" would give the team at SEG many more options branding-wise. You can lean into the double entendre and brand the team with a Mr. Moneybags type character, or you can stick with the skiing theme, which notably focuses on bumps that are much more family-friendly than the ones brought to mind by the name "Powder" (which was also on the 20-name list - what were they thinking?!). Profit/prophet puns give the team a playful Mormon joke to beat to death, and the name just radiates Vancouver Millionaires energy overall (a good thing). But the best part? The mascot. Obviously, it would be a California Gull named Mo. Top hat, monocle, and bag of cash optional.

Utah Stags/Pronghorns

Sorry survey, there are no "Caribou" in Utah. However, there are other large ruminant creatures - elk, deer, pronghorns, etc. A fan on twitter mocked up some awesome Stags designs that would be easily adaptable to any such creature (preferably one that, you know, actually lives in the state). Nature/wildlife as a theme gives a lot of flexibility with the color scheme, and any creature with huge horns can be made to seem badass, noble, and respectable. The Milwaukee Bucks exist and have charted some of this branding territory, but sticking to a Utah-native animal could lead to a team brand you'd want to be stuck in a rut with.

Utah Rush

"Canyons" (from the survey) is a little too on-the-nose, no? At the end of the day, Utah's topography is iconic - the beautiful sandstone arches are on Utah's license plates for a reason, and that's not just because they captivate many a starry-eyed wook in Moab. The canyons and arches the state is famous for were created by a "Rush" - flowing water, fast and powerful. The word itself has lots of positive connotations in hockey - "joining the rush," "rush chances," "odd man rush" - and Utah is full of odd men so that checks out. It's never a bad idea to name your team after something fast, and "Rush" avoids being too on-the-nose while giving the branding team lots of room to maneuver. Yes, there's an indoor lacrosse team with the same name, but "Swarm" and "Mammoth" (also existing NLL team names) made it onto the survey - so why not "Rush"?

Rankings

Ranking (avg) Team Delta Overall Record Record This Week Comments
1 (2.33) Dallas Stars 1 51-21-9 2-1-0 rawrberry_ says The Stars locked up the Central Division and with their win over the Kraken this Saturday. I don't know what happened when the Stars were supposed to play the Jets this past week. The Stars got 50 wins on the season. The Stars now have two players with 30+ goals.
2 (2.43) Carolina Hurricanes 1 51-22-7 2-0-0 timmablimma says Jarvis-Aho-Guentzel what a line. Jarvis is gonna get so paid and that's okay. I hope we can somehow keep Guentzel because talk about a player who has fit like a glove or well tailored suit. Svechnikov doing the Michigan against Boston just amazing. I don't care who we play in the playoffs, it'd be great to win the President's Trophy, but there's really only one trophy this team should be going for. Also, I just want to say I feel awful for the Coyotes fans, after having shitty management and a fear of relocation before Dundon fully took control, it guts me. This Caniac wanted hockey to work in the desert, just not with their shitty owner. Getting an owner who isn't afraid to go against the grain is probably what's needed there. Sorry Coyotes bros and bro-ettes? I hope the youth hockey movement stays strong there because without it no Matthews, Knies and now Baby Doan.
3 (2.43) New York Rangers - 54-23-4 1-2-0 nodessb says This week was certainly more of a rough patch compared to their other recent games, but it happens. Playing against hungry teams that are trying to make the playoffs will do that unfortunately. I'm glad the boys got their "revenge" on the Islanders in the second game against them, although we still let them get their billionth loser point of the season. I'm hoping the team is able to beat the Sens in their final game of the season and clinch a President's Trophy win. But even more than that, I think it's important to go into the playoffs winning games, and a loss to a bottom team would not look good at all. Either way, let's hope they have 16 wins in them after next week. LGR!
4 (6.73) Boston Bruins 1 47-18-15 1-1-0 maxpowr9 says NHL schedulers are dumb. Only 2 games this week and then a b2b to end the season. A meh week. The PP has been dreadful for months but it was particularly bad this week. Marchand and Pasta have paired for 1 goal on the PP since the ASG. Clearly those no longer work well together on it. Pretty much no time to figure that out now; just hope for the best in the playoffs.
5 (6.83) Winnipeg Jets 4 50-24-6 3-0-0 rasera says Last one of the year, and what a way for us to end the season. Flying high in the sky and on our way to the mile high city. Good luck Colorado fans, the Jets look to be in top shape, and I hope the series is as good as my mind is hyping it up to be.
6 (7) Florida Panthers 0 51-24-6 3-0-0 copaceticvindication says Team is back to looking really good, just need swaggy and ekblad back and we are cooking, fuck it baby we're winning the whole goddamn cup and you'll all see!!! Or we lose in brutal fashion round who knows. Season MVPs are Bobby, Samson Reino, Barkov, Gustav Forsling, and all 6'6 of Anthony Stolarz. BRING ON THE PLAYOFFS WOOOOO
7 (7.67) Vancouver Canucks 0 49-22-9 2-0-1 steckums says West pick for the cup final
8 (7.77) Colorado Avalanche -4 49-25-7 1-1-1 hockeycross says The Avs did not have a week that brings confidence heading into the Playoffs. However, this team knows how to win and has looked at times unbeatable this season. The team will strategize individually for opponents something Bednar has shown he is good at. Defense will need to hold steady against Winnepeg and the Avs will need to convert on their chances vs an excellent goalie. This team is a contender and they will go out and show it.
9 (8.4) Edmonton Oilers -1 48-25-6 1-1-1 eatingasspatties says The Oilers are all but locked into the 2 spot in the Pacific now, but still need to see who they're going to play in the first round. McDavid is resting up, and the Oilers are just focused on getting healthy for the shitshow that will be round 1 vs Vegas or LA.
10 (10.1) Toronto Maple Leafs 0 46-24-10 2-1-1 No Leafs blurb, sorry.
11 (10.47) Nashville Predators 0 47-29-5 2-0-1 thefragrancevol says It looks like we're getting the Vancouver Canucks, which would be much better than getting the Dallas Stars. I'm honestly just glad we're here. This was supposed to be a rebuild year, and it turned into a playoff year. I'm happy
12 (10.8) Tampa Bay Lightning 0 44-28-8 1-1-1 mcrsft3brdev says It's almost playoff time! And with that, comes the last ranking of the regular season! Thank you to all who read my blurbs! The Bolts have really come into playoff form over the past few months, with Vasy returning to his seemingly-normal brick-wall-y self, Kucherov primed to eclipse 100 assist (he would be the first Bolt ever and would join a very select crowd of players that have done it EVER), our offense looks primed, and new additions Duclair and Dumba have been contributing positively, excited to see their playoff potential with a new team. Our 1st round playoff matchup is currently the Boston Bruins, and what a series that would be. While not the same team without Bergeron and Krecji, the Bruins should prove a challenging matchup and a series entertaining, if not a few rounds early. Good luck to our boys in the playoffs and GO BOLTS!!!!
13 (12.1) Vegas Golden Knights 0 44-28-8 2-2-0 anon_agentd05b says To the playoffs we go, two easy home games to end the season, I expect any players that need rest to take it this week and maybe some Silver knights getting some more ice time. Hertl is already shaping up to be a great addition to the team. Hanifin is playing incredible and the long term deal could end up being amazing down the stretch assuming cap keeps going up. Would love to see the team repeat and its completely possible with this roster, that said I'm excited for next season even if the playoff run doesn't go very well.
14 (13.6) Los Angeles Kings 0 43-26-11 2-1-0 No Kings blurb this week, sorry.
15 (15.5) New York Islanders 0 37-27-16 2-0-1 mephisto1822 says Two games left. Only two points to secure the Metro 3 spot. Let’s fucking go! Dobson went down and is “day to day”. Luckily Pelech is still ok after the dirty vicious hit that by Zibanejad. A few weeks ago the playoffs looked like a joke but here we are. Gotta love hockey. RIP Coyotes.
16 (17.27) Pittsburgh Penguins 1 37-31-12 1-1-1 steckums says please don't sneak in. longjumpingscene2327 says Need a lot of help. The Boston game was a huge setback. A loss to Nashville is the season.
17 (17.43) St. Louis Blues -1 43-33-5 2-1-0 No Blues blurb this week, sorry.
18 (17.97) Detroit Red Wings 0 39-32-9 1-1-1 americanadian98 says If not for the Leafs game, Detroit would be in a lot of trouble right now. Thankfully, they won that game, and now all they need is to beat the Habs and for one of Boston or Philly to beat the Caps, and they'll be sitting in the final playoff spot in the east.
19 (18.13) Washington Capitals 0 38-31-11 2-1-0 dagetawayman421 says The Caps are somehow back in control of their own destiny... I don't know this team ended up in this position with everything they've gone through this season (losing players to injuries, Ovechkin not scoring for half the year, selling at the deadline, our power play being turd for most of the season, all the last minute injuries now with Jensen and Sandin out) We're here, despite driving Lindgren into the ground with all the work we've put on him. I do think that this team will be better next year as Kuemper literally started the season with a baby and that wrecked everything else in the lineup. However, if we get the Rangers, this team will absolutely want to ruin Laviolette's life after the past three seasons he destroyed our roster.
20 (20.1) Minnesota Wild 0 38-32-10 1-2-0 No Wild blurb this week, sorry.
21 (20.17) Philadelphia Flyers 0 38-32-11 2-1-0 assassin2107 says In hindsight, if you told me that Flyers would go 2-1 this week, I'd consider that great results given that they were playing NYR, MTL and NJD. Unfortunately that loss was a 9-3 loss, and it wasn't to the team that they should have lost against. At least the Flyers showed signs of life the next games, delivering some strong results and showing that no, they really didn't quit on the coach.
22 (22.4) New Jersey Devils 0 38-38-5 1-2-0 No Devils blurb this week, sorry.
23 (22.73) Buffalo Sabres 0 38-37-6 1-1-1 dr3amweav3r says 13 years out of the playoffs get you dead last in the power rankings. One week left until another offseason of pain. Fans online are howling for the obliteration of the coaching staff, and when that doesn't happen the pitchforks will come out for Kevyn and Terry. Should Donny lose his job? Probably, but I don't see it happening. Honestly, I see nothing good happening; As I see it, either we fire no one, hire our AHL coach in Appert (bad move), or hire some monster like Q or Babs. That's how I feel about this org. Bad choices only. Let the torment continue. I said "see" an excessive amount here. Deal with it.
24 (24.63) Ottawa Senators 0 36-40-4 2-1-0 driftshade11 says We're playing out the string yet again and there's players who are doing their best to make this team's lottery situation more and more of a mess. I just want to get to this offseason already, especially now with Stützle and Crookshank injured.
25 (24.7) Arizona Coyotes 1 35-41-5 2-2-0 recockulous says This week's events have left our fanbase feeling deeply betrayed. Outside voices claiming this move was overdue need to recognize that a week ago we had a guarantee of at least 1 more year at Mullett and new renderings of an arena pending a land auction on June 27. Now we have nothing. The reality is stark: 1 playoff run in 26 seasons - only making the playoffs once since 2012 - is as responsible for the demise of this team as the lack of an NHL ice sheet. Ownership here has never committed to winning, and just like we see now in Buffalo, San Jose and Anaheim, fans go elsewhere when there is a losing product on the ice. With rare exceptions like Clayton Keller, who is the Yotes’ first point-per-game player in 25 years, we've consistently lacked star power that would fill an NHL arena. Except for ‘11-’12 when fans packed the building for Western Conference Finals, we have endured continual rebuilds, embarrassing purchases of dead contracts, and draft after draft of hope and promised glory. Meruelo's refusal to commit long-term to a lease in Glendale and the move to a college arena stung us too. Fans eager to support the Yotes paid higher ticket prices in Tempe to cheer on tank seasons - only to find out that the owner values building condos adjacent to an arena more than building that arena. Diehard fans now have empty wallets and heartbreaking flashes of how good this team could be soon. We invested in prospects like Cooley, Guenther, and Doan, only to watch them now depart. We waited our entire lives for a team with this much hope, and the NHL is just taking it away. My teenage son bought a Guenther jersey less than two weeks ago, counting his cash in the car on the drive to Mullett; he will never see Guenther play another home game here. Shane Doan's son joining the team - just days ago - now feels cruel. Bettman's hand in this will have fallout, even if after the owner he foisted on us is gone. Our loyalty was completely disregarded. The scars will be deep, and our resentment enduring. Coyotes fans were never given a fair shot.
26 (25.07) Calgary Flames -1 37-38-5 3-1-0 kellervo says At least we kind of sort of tanked properly for the last stretch of the season? It would've been too on-brand for us to go on a big winning stretch after being eliminated, but we weren't quite bad enough to move higher in the draft lottery.
27 (25.6) Seattle Kraken 0 33-34-13 1-3-0 No Kraken blurb this week, sorry.
28 (26.87) Montreal Canadiens 0 30-36-14 1-0-2 mdlt97 says Solid season, great progress from the core
29 (29.43) Columbus Blue Jackets 0 26-43-12 0-3-0 steckums says The season is finally over. I think I can honestly say this season was worse than last. I hope everyone comes back healthy next season and we aren't in the bottom 5 after 20 games and sit there the whole season again.
30 (29.97) Chicago Blackhawks 0 23-51-5 0-2-0 sandman730 says Ethan Del Mastro and Frank Nazar made their NHL debuts. Landon Slaggert and Nazar scored their first NHL goals. Murphy returned from a groin strain.
31 (30.03) Anaheim Ducks 0 26-50-5 1-2-0 sawchuck says Nice win against LA to begin last week, but there's only 1 more game left of hopefully the last rebuilding season. The future starts in the fall with a young core of Carlsson, Zegras, Terry, Mctavish, Gauthier, Mintyukov, Zellweger, and Dostal among others. Stay tuned for Cutter's debut on Thursday!1
32 (31.33) San Jose Sharks 0 19-52-9 1-1-1 atomic_penguin27 says So when's the draft lottery? Well seasons just about overt and Carolina you don't win the cup for Burns we are allowing Merulo to be your new owner

PWHL rankings will return for their last few weeks next week.

Rankings

Ranking Team (1st Place Votes) Record Last10 Comments Std Dev
1 (22) Ducks 35-8-5 9-1-0 Jonas Hiller extends his winning streak to 14-0-0, now the second longest stretch. Ducks are now challenging for the best home points streak in NHL history. Amazing glove save for Hiller against the Bruins. 4 goal second period to outlast Predators. Sweeping the season series with Phoenix. Beating Detroit is always a bright spot too. Another great week being a Ducks fan. 0.00
2 Blues 31-8-5 8-1-1 All glory to the Schwartz, for he is our one true god. Join us and let the power of the Schwartz flow through you, so that you too can be saved! 0.80
3 Blackhawks 30-8-10 5-1-4 All I'm going to say is that Crawford has played great in front of some skaters that haven't seemed to want to play hard. This next week is going to be VERY trying for the Hawks. We've got the Avalanche, Ducks, and Bruins all coming to Chicago. If the team that played this past week shows up, these won't be close games. 1.14
4 Penguins 33-12-2 7-2-1 Everyone calm down. We lost one game to Edmonton, its not the end of the world. In other news injury-pocalypse has claimed two more victims in Brian Gibbons and Joe Vitale. When will it end? WBS must be running out of forwards since they send them up here just to get injured. Hopefully this madness ends soon...knock on wood (Additional write-up by ari_raid.) 1.56
5 Sharks 28-12-6 6-4-0 Sharks have had a bumpy past week in which they could have gone 3-0. Unfortunately, they went 1-2-0 due to sloppy and unenthusiastic play in Nashville, which cost them the game. They also played another great game against the Bruins, but lost again (what a great SCF it would be...). The only real saving grace from this week was the dominant performance the Sharks had against the Wings, especially in the 2nd period. They need to pick it up against Sharks East this week and against the state of Florida. The loss of Cooter for 3 more weeks will hurt, but this team still has some great assets that can score. 0.97
6 Bruins 29-14-2 6-4-0 The Bruins went on a nice vacation in California, only playing one game. Wait, shit - THERE WAS 3 GAMES! Im not going to say anything about the Ducks or the Kings games, because nothing good happened in them. Tuukka was tired, and it showed. Getting Loui and Thornton back from injury and suspension helped us eke out a win in the only game they showed up for against the Sharks. Oh, and rookie Justin Florek scored his first goal! 1.01
7 Avalanche 28-12-5 5-2-3 The Avs take 7 of 8 points last week with only an OT Loss to the Islanders. O'Reilly returns from his hugging injury and nets some pretty goals against the Wild. And Mackinnon showed off his speed with a glorious Duchene-esque goal. This week starts with an exciting match up against the Blackhawks in Chicago on Tuesday. Go Avs Go! 1.50
8 Lightning ↑1 27-14-4 6-3-1 Don't have time to do the write up this time around so here's a picture I found on the internets...Picture 1.19
9 Kings ↓1 27-14-5 3-6-1 FUCK THE CANUCKS 3.35
10 Canadiens 26-15-5 5-3-2 Montreal started off the week with a 2-1 win against divisional opponents Florida, thanks to a solid 3rd period from Price. Two days later they go in to Philly to give the flyers their easy home win as per usual then finished off the week with possibly the most entertaining game they had all year with a 2-1 OT win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Also with 8 players going to the Olympics i'm super proud of the boys. Good week overall, minus the Alex Galchenyuk injury. 1.26
11 Canucks 24-13-9 4-3-3 After a tough shootout loss against the Pens, the Canucks stepped up to beat the Blues in their first win of 2014. Their next 5 games are against Pacific division teams so they will hope to gain some ground in their division. 3.18
12 Wild ↑2 25-18-5 5-5-0 The specter of Konopka's departure has lifted the Wild to a 5-1 record in the last 6. It seems the culture change is doing MN some good. Dany Heatley is looking to be a centerpiece of that shift. Earning himself an 'A' in Parise's absence and wearing it with effect as he bolsters the second line scoring alongside Zucker and Coyle. 2.96
13 Rangers ↑8 24-20-3 7-2-1 The Rangers are really starting to look good as of late. With the sexiest man alive in net and starting to put up some good numbers (and actually getting help from the boys in front). They are starting a long home-stand with very little travel these next few months we can expect them to keep on winning. Richards and Nash are both playing well and expect them to keep playing well. With less pressure on them because of great play from Kreider and the hobbit. 3.41
14 Flyers ↑2 23-19-4 7-3-0 The Flyers have been playing pretty decent hockey lately. They are scoring key goals at key times, are showing they can comeback and win a game from behind, and, when they want, can play something closely resembling 60 minutes of hockey every now and then. 1.91
15 Coyotes 21-14-9 3-4-3 The Coyotes are playing like shit. 3.36
16 Red Wings ↓3 20-16-10 5-4-1 I love Tatar. It's hard to handle all of the injuries. Fuck the Sharks and the Ducks. A different team is on the ice every night, one night they can score the next they can't, but they haven't been letting in as many goals lately be it Howie stealing a game or not. 6 home games in a row coming up and Wings fans livers may not be able to take the abuse, but maybe they will find their missing Joe Louis magic. 2.15
17 Capitals ↑2 22-16-7 3-3-4 ** 3.57
18 Senators 20-18-8 6-2-2 5-0-1 in their last 6, a point-streak unlike anything previously seen this season. Fewer penalties taken, less defensive lapses and turnovers, secondary scoring, and strong(er) goaltending from Anderson. And it only took half the season, but Maclean FINALLY found some lines he actually likes to keep together! 2.00
19 Blue Jackets ↑5 21-20-4 7-3-0 Everything has looked good this week. We're winning games in every way possible. Blowouts, close games, shootouts, come from behinds... Watch out Metropolitan Division, because here come the Blue Jackets! 3.45
20 Hurricanes ↓1 19-17-9 5-3-2 ** 2.14
21 Devils ↑1 19-18-10 4-3-3 Fuck fact: Jagr is younger than Shaq. 1.59
22 Islanders ↑5 18-22-7 8-2-0 The Isles have seen a recent turnaround in luck with a four game winning streak starting with the Stars, the Leafs, Avs, and Stars again to close out the week. John Tavares did not rest on his laurels after being selected to Team Canada, as he netted a hat trick the night before and became the first Islander in 24 years to collect 8 or more points in a two game span. Hopefully the team can keep the momentum going with young Kevin Poulin in net. 5.85
23 Maple Leafs ↓6 22-20-5 4-4-2 The Leafs were outscored 23-10 over the past five games against teams that were outside of the playoff window. They slipped to 12th place before getting their first win since the Winter Classic against the New Jersey Devils. The Leafs sit one point out of the wild card position, but with games against the Bruins, Sabres and Canadiens this week, we could see the Leafs fall back down if they don't figure out how to fix their problems on defense. 2.79
24 Stars ↓12 20-18-7 3-6-1 Pick an aspect of the game. The Stars are terrible at it right now. There are no positives on the current 6 game skid. What's worse? January is the month the Stars were supposed to cement a position in the playoffs with a home-heavy schedule against generally weaker competition. Instead, they're not even halfway through the month and they may have dug themselves a hole too deep. 4.47
25 Predators 19-21-7 3-4-3 Our season. 1.21
26 Panthers 17-21-7 4-4-2 The Panthers play well enough for the fans not to gouge their eyes out, but not well enough to gain place in the standing. It's a weird place to be. Good news though, the Panthers host the 2015 NHL Draft and Tallon will be allowed to spend to the cap. 0.92
27 Jets ↓4 19-23-5 3-7-0 Why, hello, Paul Maurice. Let's hope you can help us not suck anymore. That starts with ending Noel's love affairs with Mark Stuart and James Wright. #freeklingberg 2.42
28 Sabres ↑1 13-26-5 5-3-2 Buffalo better be careful. The Edmonton Oilers are trying to ruin their lottery dreams. 4.25
29 Flames ↓1 15-24-6 2-8-0 Can anyone lend us a goal? Anyone? Pretty bad stretch, but we just had our first shutout of the season, so that's nice. Look to see how the team's morale is after this shellacking of a year so far. Byron and Backlund are our bright lights currently #shinebrightlikeadiamond . I am getting marginally excited over a top 5 draft pick tell you what. 1.14
30 Oilers 15-28-5 4-4-2 The Oilers have been steadily improving. At times you can see glimpses of the team the Oilers could be, then the consistency problem pops up and the Oilers play like AHLers. Yakupov's talk with Coach Eakins seemingly has paid off. Since coming back from being sat he's played fairly sound hockey (besides the game against CHI). 1.15
I hope you liked that minor April fools joke, that was a ranking from this old rankings but here is your real rankings for this week:
Ranking (avg) Team Delta Overall Record Record This Week Comments
1 (2.93) Colorado Avalanche - 46-21-5 0-1-0 hockeycross says Not a great week losing 2 at home. The Avs still look good though and the losses have caused more line shuffling which is good to see chemistry develop between the new guys. Really hope Nichushkin has nothing serious and they are just being cautious. Great win vs the preds!
2 (3.04) New York Rangers 0 47-20-4 0-0-0 nodessb says This was a fun week for sure, with the boys going 3-0 against the Flyers, Avs, and Yotes. I know many other Rangers fans aren't necessarily partial to the stressful, high-scoring shootout type games that have been going on but I for one love the excitement. I'll admit, the defensive breakdowns here and there worry me for sure but this team is still finding ways to win and outscore their problems if need be. Let's hope they can stay hot down the stretch and go into the playoffs playing winning hockey. LGR!
3 (3.71) Carolina Hurricanes 0 45-21-7 0-1-0 timmablimma says NC STATE TO THE FINAL FOUR IN BOTH MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - OUR ARENA BUDDIES! Times are fun in the Raleigh! The game against Pittsburgh was classic former Canes goalie refuses to give up goals to former team. On Thursday, it looked like Reimer was about to do the same before the floodgates opened. Hurricanes are cooking with oil, gas and gravy going into the final weeks of the season. Guentzel-Aho-Jarvis are absolutely smoking right now. Kochetkov leads the league in Goals Against Average right now when accounting for goalies playing more than 24 games (NHL.com's cut off). Considering the first 3 months of the year, he's been on an absolute heater. Freddie since coming back from blood clots has been amazing. longjumpingscene2327 says With the Pens out, the Canes are my pick to win the Eastern Conference.
4 (4.29) Dallas Stars 0 45-19-9 1-0-0 longjumpingscene2327 says With the Pens out, the Stars are my pick to win the Western Conference. rawrberry_ says The Stars emerged victorious in all four road games on this last trip away from Dallas. The Stars are on also on a seven game win streak and were the first team in the Thnderdome to clinch a playoff spot. Everyone's favourite captain was named the NHLPA player of the week. The captain also recorded his 900th point of his career. There are seven different Stars players with at least 20 goals but no player on the Stars has 30 goals. By now I expect most of y'all to know who Wyatt Johnston is and if y'all don't y'all to watch some videos of him. Lots to be pleased with, the only down note is the upper body injury to Tanev.
5 (6.82) Vancouver Canucks 0 45-19-8 0-1-0 joetothejack says For the first time since 2015, the Canucks have clinched a playoff berth! They also have recovered from their PDO bender and they still look elite. Exciting times for Canucks fans!
6 (7.25) Florida Panthers 0 46-22-5 0-2-0 copaceticvindication says The team is still stuttering a bit but our missing guys are starting to come back and we are starting to look a bit like our old selves(besides some shoddy defense around the net). Luckily we have some tough games to close out the year including two leafs showdowns, the bruins, and a hot sens team trying to ruin its draft pick, hopefully this gets the team fully in the playoff mode and ready for what is most likely going to be a rematch with Toronto and balding boy wonder, Auston Matthews. Also get rolled red wings enjoy the offseason bozos
7 (7.61) Edmonton Oilers 1 43-23-4 1-0-0 eatingasspatties says A perfect week, dominating all 3 games they played, Hyman will get 60 goals, McDavid will get 100 assists, life is good in Oil Country
8 (7.93) Nashville Predators -1 42-25-4 0-0-0
9 (8.64) Boston Bruins 0 42-17-15 1-1-0 maxpowr9 says All I can do is 🤷‍♂️ at this point. The Bruins clinched a playoff spot and you might as well spin the roulette wheel for the Bruins' opponent. I just hope that everyone is 100% healthy for playoffs.
10 (10.82) Toronto Maple Leafs 1 41-22-9 1-1-0
11 (11.75) Winnipeg Jets -1 44-22-6 0-0-1 rasera says Lost 6 games in a row where we really would've won 4 of them on a normal day. In the end, that's still 11 points lost that could've meant the difference between LA or Vancouver as our first round. Not that it matters who we face at this point. Until they string some wins together again, Jets are the team everyone is salivating for in the first round.
12 (12) Tampa Bay Lightning 0 40-25-7 1-0-0 mcrsft3brdev says The Bolts are riding a 9 game point streak and seemingly heating up at precisely the right time. As is tradition. Big wins over Boston and VGK, with a strong game against the Isles have been the last three. The powerplay has been smoking hot at 29% and backed up by a very good top-5 penalty kill. Vasy is looking much more himself lately, and scoring has looked good and from varying sources. Upcoming games vs the Red Wings and Maple Laffs this week. We also play the hot Capitals and finish the season off vs the Laffs once again . Facing the Leafs twice in the last weeks of the season will be an excellent test for the team. GO BOLTS!!!
13 (13.21) Los Angeles Kings 0 38-22-11 1-0-0 raymondliang says This team is looking like a walking first round exit again. If they dont grab the lead, its pretty much game over. Non-existent bottom 6, no superstars to take over a game when needed, and no puck-moving defensemen to jump into the attack when trailing. Congratulations to whoever gets us in the first round, it'll be quick.
14 (13.39) Vegas Golden Knights 0 39-25-7 1-0-0 anon_agentd05b says That was a pretty great week, except for about 25 minutes vs Nashville but i'll take an OT loss being the worst news of the week after the last couple months. 7/8 points on the road against teams we're fighting for playoff position with. Marchessault becomes the second player in VGK history to have a 40 goal season. Vegas takes the third pacific seat from the kings this week. Can't complain at all. Next week should be good only two games. against Vancouver in the fortress and then the Coyotes in Mullet. Canucks have been a little sloppy lately so hopefully we can take the win there and Arizona should be a win unless Doan keeps his fairy tale story going. (no hate, i genuinely love that story-line right now)
15 (15.96) Washington Capitals 1 36-27-9 1-1-0 dagetawayman421 says In four games this week, the Caps earned... 5 points. Wins over Winnipeg and Detroit (OTW) followed by a shellacking against the Leafs and blowing the game to the Bruins in overtime to pad Ovi's goal total was not ideal. Somehow we've got the 3 seed in the Metro, but several trap games await us this week. at BUF, vs PIT, at CAR, vs OTT. Caps need to walk away with at least six points this week. I don't care how they do it, if they want to make the playoffs they need to get as many points as possible. Usually 96 points is the playoff line (unless you're coached by Claude Julien). The max points the Flyers and Red Wings can get is 96 points. Caps play both the Flyers and Red Wings in April, so if they want to get to the playoffs, they're gonna have to go thru both teams to get there in the coming weeks. Also, Ryan Leonard is tearing it up for Boston College. Can't wait til he eventually signs with the Caps!
16 (16.54) St. Louis Blues -1 38-30-4 0-0-1 beedrill13 says The best summary of the Blues this season was Saturday night - despite the loss to Vegas earlier in the week, we found ourselves in a position to get within 3 pts of the Kings for the wild card spot; all we had to do was beat the Sharks who were on a 9 game losing streak. We lost 4-0 at home to seal away any remaining playoff hope.
17 (17.79) Philadelphia Flyers 0 36-28-9 0-1-0 assassin2107 says My April Fools joke is saying that the Flyers deserve a playoff spot. Honestly, nobody in the east deserves the WC2 spot. I'm assuming Caps will take Metro 3rd spot, and Flyers, Wings and Isles are all doing terribly. Flyers probably make playoffs purely due to Detroit and NYI crashing and burning harder, which is extremely impressive.
18 (18.5) Minnesota Wild 1 34-28-9 0-0-0 paynetrain181999 says Hynes tried the goalie pull in OT strategy again, alas, lightning did not strike twice. Giving up two points to the team we're chasing means this season is effectively done. In other news, Faber is about to finish second in Calder voting (grumbling intensifies), and Fleury might be coming back for one more season. On to the next year, the final year of the Parise/Suter buyout penalties. After that, we cookin with gas.
19 (18.54) Detroit Red Wings -1 36-29-7 0-0-1 americanadian98 says Simply put, if the Wings don't have a good week this coming week the season will essentially be over. Lightning, Rangers, and Sabres is a tough enough schedule to have to play over that time though.
20 (21.25) New Jersey Devils 2 36-33-4 1-0-0
21 (21.32) Buffalo Sabres 2 34-34-5 0-1-0
22 (21.36) New York Islanders -2 31-26-15 1-0-0
23 (21.86) Calgary Flames -2 33-33-5 0-1-0 kellervo says 3rd worst team in the league over the last calendar month, worst team over the last two weeks, putting Calgary into the Celebrini sweepstakes. The effort is there, and statistically the team's been better than it's record, but it's clear we absolutely gutted our blueline, leaving Marky and Wolf both out to dry.
24 (23.82) Ottawa Senators 1 32-36-4 2-0-0 driftshade11 says Sigh, the usual bullshit of winning meaningless games is in full swing, likely caused by Joonas Korpisalo realizing he's lighting something close to 5 million dollars on fire if he does not his season around. I'm glad the vibes are improving, but I can also see that the dream of picking Artyom Levshunov in the draft is slipping away, and that makes me sad.
25 (24.32) Pittsburgh Penguins -1 31-30-10 1-0-0 longjumpingscene2327 says Outside the bottom ten currently, so no lottery pick; also less than 5% to make playoffs. Just stuck in the doldrums for the rest of the year, trying to tank out (hopefully).
26 (25.29) Arizona Coyotes 1 30-37-5 1-0-0 recockulous says This team isn't ready to hang with the Rangers, but the rebuild is starting to bear fruit. Inject GuentheCooley/Doan directly into my veins.
27 (25.64) Seattle Kraken -1 29-29-13 1-0-0
28 (26.82) Montreal Canadiens 0 28-32-12 2-0-0 mdlt97 says Strong week for the habs, they played some really hard close games and managed to win a couple of them against three playoff teams (rip tank) Slaf set the franchise record for points by a teenager in a season and set a new career high point streak. the goalies looked sharp and have since the TDL. A fun week of hockey.
29 (28.43) Chicago Blackhawks 2 21-47-5 1-1-0 sandman730 says The Hawks played spoiler this week, earning wins against Calgary and Philadelphia. They finished March 7-7-0, their best month this season.
30 (28.93) Anaheim Ducks 0 24-44-4 0-1-0
31 (29) Columbus Blue Jackets -2 23-37-12 0-1-0 steckums says The road trip from hell is finally over, and the Jackets get a fun win over Pittsburgh at home on Jeff Rimer night. You will be missed, Rimer!
32 (31.54) San Jose Sharks 0 16-47-8 0-1-0 atomic_penguin27 says Congrats St. Louis you are the only team to lose to us twice, your prize is another year of mediocrity, anyway only 9 more games of pain..
No PWHL rankings this week as they are on their IIHF international championship tournament right now.

2024.03.24 19:24 Infamous_Whole7515 [Territories - 24th - Post 3] The Alliance Creates a Documentary Around Infamous_Whole7515

A video of Infamous_Whole7515 is shown on the screen. The duration is quite long for a normal campaign post. The title reads "Credit for a Social Man," followed by "Produced by the Social Liberal Alliance."
"Hello folks," says Infamous_Whole7515, waving at the audience, "to boost my campaign, I've hired a narrator recommended by some political friends to speak about my political journey. His name is Mr. Thompson, and you will hear his nice voice soon. Now, I hope you will enjoy this mini political documentary and take some lessons from it."
The screen fades to black, followed by the voice of a man with a smooth tempo and a passionate voice. Video clips of the BC Social Credit Party, Vancouver, and election night in 1991 play in the background of his speech.
"When Infamous_Whole7515 was very young, he had a strong passion for the ideals of the BC Social Credit Party. He lived in the blossoming city of Vancouver, now known as a beacon of diversity and friendliness, and regularly tuned into the old television set. He watched many profound speeches given by people like Premier Bill Bennett and was greatly moved by their evocative statements regarding the state of BC society.
As a result, he grew to appreciate a wide berth of politics that his father referred to as good government. One of the legacies of the Social Credit government, which met its end in the 1991 election, was to instil in the young Infamous_Whole7515 a strong respect for non-traditional conservatism, a blend of progressive politics and economic liberalism.
When he was elected to the House of Commons, he felt like a fish out of water at times. He was embattled by the partisanship exhibited by some of his colleagues, feared that the Liberal government would sideline his party in favour of more left-wing alternatives, and he found the speakership to be quite tiring. However, his conviction to deliver for Canadians did not end there. He continued to debate regularly, supported the AGamerPwr ministry while he watched the Pirates and NDP act indifferent in the face of their own policies, and he worked tirelessly to maintain an air of decorum and respect in the House."
The screen changes to the House of Commons, projected by a green screen, where Infamous_Whole7515 stands alone in the speaker's podium.
"Like a steadfast rock, he stands and maintains order in the House with a crisp voice. He exudes a diligence that has become the envy of many political opponents, but the weight of anger from anonymous voices online are too much for him to handle. He resigns with an air of great sadness and retires from political life. For now, it seems as though the haters have won," narrates Mr. Thompson.
Then the scene changes to a compilation of disorderly conduct in the House, including floor crossings, confusion in the votes, and regular shouting.
"But then, he returns to political life, dismayed by the constant threat of a snap election that hangs over all of their heads like a sword. Renewing his push for a constructive House, Infamous_Whole7515 works night and day to get his message out to as many hard-working citizens as possible."
The footage changes to a snowy day in the Yukon, with Infamous_Whole7515 and Mr. Thompson, who is walking with him, braving the storm.
"In good weather or bad, Infamous_Whole7515 believes it is his duty to bear the cold weather if his future constituents will do the same. As such, there have been many instances where a resident opens his door and is stunned that anyone is visiting her in this hour," says Mr. Thompson.
The scene changes to a home, where a middle-aged woman opens the door and gasps.
"My goodness, what are you doing in this weather?"
"Good afternoon, ma'am," says Infamous_Whole7515, shaking her head with a snow-covered glove, "My name is Infamous_Whole7515, and I want to be your next MP."
As Mr. Thompson begins to narrate, literally beside Infamous_Whole7515, the camera follows them inside and matches the narration.
"Infamous_Whole7515 finds warm hospitality and is often invited to take refuge in the homes of people. He oozes conviction, with passion dripping off every word. Residents are drawn in by his charm and leave the conversations, firmly convinced that he is the representative they need in Ottawa. They are mesmerised by his ability to speak at length about all sorts of topics. On this particular visit, Infamous_Whole7515 broaches a topic that is truly near and dear to his heart."
Mr. Thompson allows Infamous_Whole7515 to speak now.
"My appreciation for heating is unmatched in the moments subsequent to my arduous expedition against the ruthless temperatures in a locale that you inhabit," says Infamous_Whole7515.
"I beg your pardon?" asks the woman.
"My apologies, I was too focused on this romance novel. What I meant to say is that I love having heating, especially after being in the snow. Even so, are you worried about your bills? I know you can't exactly help it, but I'm sure you prefer for there to be no carbon tax," says Infamous_Whole7515.
"Oh yes, while I am aware of the MP from the Prairies trying to cut it, I think I support your full repeal a bit more. I want to protect the environment. I eat sustainably and carpool when I can, which is hard in Nunavut. I just want to be able to afford gas prices. It's hard enough to travel as it is," laments the woman.
"That's right, and I completely sympathise with you. Infrastructure, better sources of energy, and affordability are all topics that I've touched on in my two campaigns here. I especially hope to build geothermal plants in the far north as a clean source of energy that still provides adequate heating."
"Indeed," begins Mr. Thompson, acting like a literal fly on the wall by sitting beside Infamous_Whole7515 with a neutral expression on his face, "Infamous_Whole7515 had worked hard in both terms to raise these concerns on the campaign trail. His eloquence has truly stunned countless Canadians, and he remains confident that he will attain a second term. Still, the fight is not over. After a nice conversation with a voter, he gives her information about voting day and leaves to door-knock some more. He leaves the house with a sense of pride, feeling as though he has truly accomplished a a worthy feat. Every voter leaves an imprint on his heart that he will carry with him all the way to the polling booths on election day."
The video soon transitions to a fishing spot, where Infamous_Whole7515 and Mr. Thompson speak with the locals. However, this time, Mr. Thompson takes up the front of the speech while Infamous_Whole7515 meets with guests in the background.
"Infamous_Whole7515 is eager to try his hand at understanding the intricacies of finding the best fishing spots and how to catch and release if he so wishes to. However, he does not make a habit of doing so, as he understands that it is not healthy for the wildlife. Shivering from the temperatures, Infamous_Whole7515 manages to warm himself up through the camaraderie he gets in the presence of his future constituents.
However, he has a greater goal in mind: sharing his vision for more affordable groceries and drawing the attention of many Canadians, eager to lend their ears to him for the duration of his speech. He speaks about the need to remove supply management, a controversial solution for farmers but one that he feels with all his heart is necessary to reduce grocery prices.
Soon after he speaks about groceries, he laments on the state of the wildlife in the Territories. It becomes clear that the fishing holes are more barren than many older Canadians are familiar with. It pains him to see the effects of climate change firsthand affecting people's food supply, and he is resolved to speak about it. Unafraid of alienating climate-sceptics, he takes in a deep breath, focuses on the deprivation before his eyes, and begins his speech," says Mr. Thompson.
"I believe in climate change, and all elected officials should do so. That is not a statement about free speech. It is about the truth. I would never punish you for being in denial, but extreme weather events will not consider your political affiliation when they strike. However, Canada cannot stand alone in the fight. We need to embark on a new mission to help the world transition from the dirtiest fuels, and that means fighting authoritarianism. It might sound counter-intuitive, but the emissions that come from a hard-right government far exceed the amounts caused by us pumping a bit of oil. We're talking a full parliamentary term. Not to mention, allowing Russia to continue its war of aggression sends a message that it is fine to still do business with it, and it is in no hurry to enact any policies on climate change when it depends on fossil fuel revenues. It's irresponsible for us to unilaterally disarm our oil and gas industry instead of using our natural resources to create trade partnerships and move countries towards a full democracy," says Infamous_Whole7515, showing no signs of exhaustion from his long-winded speeches.
Mr. Thompson soon takes over, "Having finished his speech, Infamous_Whole7515 feels a renewed sense of purpose from meeting so many different people throughout his journey. He senses that his participants cling onto every word he says. In days of ode, candidates for Members of Parliaments put in far less effort than him. Infamous_Whole7515 is a beacon of hope, shining the way to a future of economic prosperity and internationalism."
The documentary changes scenes again. Now the camera shows Infamous_Whole7515 driving down a highway in the Territories, with his narrator sitting in the back. Dutiful as ever, Mr. Thompson says,
"In order to reach the more distant communities, Infamous_Whole7515 is forced to drive a gas powered vehicle, as he has read reports about electric vehicles performing worse in the winter and does not want to be stranded on the highway. The decision fills him with a strong sense of regret. He fears that political spin doctors will one day bring out pictures of his private life to accuse him of not doing enough for climate change. However, he understands that it is a risk he has to take in public service. He will not allow himself to be halted by a few unconstructive members of the public.
Soon, disaster nearly strikes. If it wasn't for his fast reflexes and familiarity with the northern roads, he could have left with a burst tire or even a broken car."
Infamous_Whole7515's car suddenly stops right before a destroyed section of the highway.
"The culprit," begins Mr. Thompson, "is none other than climate change. Disruptions to permafrost is dangerous for residents. Infamous_Whole7515 knows that many of the structures in the Territories were not built to withstand the heat of climate change due to their age, and it is beginning to reveal itself. What will come next? Will roads become unusable? Will water flood the highways? He does not know, but the evidence in front of his eyes only strengthens his motivation to return to Ottawa and work on an infrastructure bill for Canadians."
Later, Infamous_Whole7515 is seen at an office desk with a pen in hand, pondering over a balance sheet.
"Now," says Mr. Thompson, "is one of the toughest parts about good governance. Responsible budgeting. While millions of ordinary Canadians engage in budgeting, the government's budgets will impact virtually everyone, at least indirectly. While some parties may treat it as a partisan exercise, Infamous_Whole7515 stares at the page with a solemn gaze, feeing the weight of his supporters, including people who cast their votes for Social Credit in both the past and present.
He has a few solutions regardless. He wants to institute a wealth tax for the very rich, a frequent fliers tax, increase corporate tax on the largest companies, and replace the carbon tax with a cap-and-trade system to shift the burden from consumers to industry. He will join the calls to remove all fossil fuel subsidies- those companies must show they can stand on their own and be incentivised to seek out global markets somehow.
That's the central theme for Infamous_Whole7515. Incentives. His background in economics has taught him all about the importance of motivation. If you give someone money and then ask for help, it is likely to be less effective in obtaining help than if you ask them first and pay them after.
If individuals are given a universal basic income regardless of their employment status, it will drive people out of the workforce. Canada already has channels to help those who can't work. Pensions, disability benefits, negative income tax, and unemployment insurance are some existing channels to that issue, and they should be augmented if necessary.
If you prop up companies with subsidies, they are likely to be less concerned with seeking riskier investments that could go wrong. But risk is a necessary part of our lives.
In any case, he also believes in cooperation. A minimum corporate tax decided by as many nations as possible will be sure to prevent people from taking their assets and fleeing on the drop of the dime. Provinces must also harmonise their taxes as closely as possible to prevent interprovincial competition. These policies are like the opposite of an anti-poaching law. While they do require diplomatic skill and compromise, Infamous_Whole7515 is sure that there will be enough hard-working MPs to assist him on his endeavor."
Finally, the last scene of the documentary features him in Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport, where nostalgic music plays in the background as he approaches the terminal.
"Finally, Infamous_Whole7515 arrives at the last part of his journey to Ottawa. On election day, he hopes to stand here once again and catch a flight to his new home in the capital of Canada. Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport is a true symbol of the importance of infrastructure to facilitate tourism, a highly profitable industry and the lifeblood of some more remote areas. It stands in sharp contrast to the sparsely populated rural parts of the Territories and the highways. Is urbanisation the route to prosperity, or does it create too many homogenous communities and leave rural areas behind? These are questions for another time. As he thinks about his campaign, Infamous_Whole7515 decides to end the documentary with a final speech," says Mr. Thompson.
"Mr. Thompson," begins Infamous_Whole7515, acknowledging the narrator for the first time, "I want to thank you for your kind words. I'd like to hire you as a speechwriter. If you are interested, please contact my constituency office."
"And that was the moment I had been waiting for. To finally put my narration to good use for a candidate who is truly a man of the people, but does not harness such a reputation to rile his voters up. I have been dreading the day where my services are replaced by a machine, but I firmly believe that genuine words spoken by a candidate cannot be replaced," says Mr. Thompson.
"Thank you Mr. Thompson, but you don't need to narrate all the way to the end. Anyway, I want to go to Ottawa and restore stability to the House. I've hit on this point several times already, but it is more relevant than ever. We need someone who will go there and advocate for a full repeal of the carbon tax instead of a candidate who changes his views based on his party affiliation. We need to stop making floor-crossings a political game and get rid of some automatic confidence votes.
I have been consistent in my words throughout my time in politics, even in the face of coalitions of chaos. I will continue to press my policies regardless of the criticism I receive. I hope you will vote for the Social Liberal Alliance on election day!" declares Infamous_Whole7515, smiling at the camera before the documentary ends.

2024.03.20 13:56 pohltergiest A comedy, part 3

A comedy, part 3
Today I woke, sore and cranky again. The beds suck, the pillows suck, and I guess the heater was on too high. I've been neglecting my stretches and I had ice cream for dessert last night. Bah. Architect of my own demise. I went for a quick soak in the onsen to loosen up my back and shoulders before we screw them back on tighter than before today.
Breakfast was ready for us when we got downstairs as we were asked to order the night before, it was a deliciously flaky croissant, ham, sausage, eggs and prunes. Also some amazing yoghurt I dare not eat more than a spoonful of. Bryce says we should find a pharmacy in the next town and see if we can find some of their second-rate lactose intolerance cure, enzymatic pills like the lactase we have back home are prohibited here. Frost tipped mountains beckoned to us from outside, so we went to get ready.
A half hour later we were ready to leave and was greeted by wind and flurries. The forecast predicted the flurries should end shortly, and besides what's a little spring flurries? The air was biting and cold as we passed by the tadewara wetlands, golden grasses shining in the weak overcast light of the morning. We wore our full compliment of cold weather gear, our biking base layer plus two full layers on top with the rain shell over all of that. A buff under the helmet keeps the ears from freezing, two layers of gloves and thick wool socks. Hi Vis stripes and blinking lights to be seen in inclement weather. Sunglasses to keep the flurries and wind from striking the eye. It's all we have. Even so, the building and cruel winds whipped us, buffeting our weary bodies so laden with gear. We feared our tires would not be able to handle the shear of the wind pushing us into the road. With every gust we instinctively flattened to the bike, carefully leaning to compensate for the wind. Our path meandered back and forth on the roads edge, needing a meter or more of space to navigate these wind blasted lands. The yamanami highway would not let us go easily, and the mountains there seemed displeased with our presence. A lovely suspension bridge was nearby that we considered visiting, but like the wetland we dared not stop, our generated body heat being the key to maintaining comfort below our gear's lower limits.
The road out of Tano and towards Yufuin winds through a highland, our elevation chart looked to be a sawtooth pattern before dropping sharply to Yufuin. Still 1000m above sea level we went up and down, zipping and unzipping jackets and sweaters to free or trap heat. I felt like on the uphill warm blood was filling my gloves and shoes, melting my digits over and over. Cheerless empty farm stands were our only greeters for the journey, quiet forests and the odd car were the only others in this cold and windy place. The sun peeked out on occasion, teasing us with warmer notions before disappearing behind dark grey snow clouds. My tire became low, alarming us as this was no time for a flat tire. Just needed a bit of air. My deraileur clicked unhappily as my gearing skipped from one to another, indicating maintenance was required. Perhaps we'll learn that maintenance should happen at a good time, not when we're in poor circumstances. We sped past the steel grey waters of Yamashita pond, only giving it the barest of ponderings with stiff necks.
Our fingers ached as we descended into Yufuin's valley, a long winding descent with much more traffic than before. Tour buses fought for position on the narrow two lane roads, full of half asleep passengers. One cut me off as they failed to overtake me before stopping oncoming traffic, the horn startling me as they moved on. Bryce is a stronger rider than me and often is ahead by 50m or so going up hills but we decided to keep a tighter formation after this. The snow came and went but the predicted end never came. Mostly it was a few flurries but occasionally it was snow coming down, gusts blowing us sideways. More conifers lined the roads, roofs of many trunks supporting no other life. We remarked that the patchy forestries here were ugly monocultures that mar the landscape worse than the clearcut harvesting. Even in terrible weather I always have room for an opinion.
Finally we found ourselves at the bottom of our second major descent of the day, Yufuin. We had made good time and it was barely past time for second breakfast so we decided to get a snack at a conbini and keep moving. Being at a somewhat lower altitude, we stripped a layer to prevent sweat buildup. I got a rice ball and some spicy fried chicken, Bryce got a white chocolate snickers and a lemon fried chicken. The chicken was extremely greasy but satisfying. We agreed the white chocolate snickers tasted strange, though not bad. Grateful for the break from the wind and the cold, we ate our snack sitting on a curb in the sun, warming our already tired bodies. On a better day, Yufuin would be a lovely rest stop, a onsen town tucked into the folds of the mountains. Today, a trap as we feared the weather could only get worse.
To leave Yufuin and reach Beppu, that glittering gem by the sea, one must seek the passage of Mounts Yufu and Tsurumi. Perhaps if we sought out their shrines our path would have been less arduous. The pass loops over the shoulder of Yufu, the entire side facing Yufuin having been burnt to the ground for pastureland. A quirk of the land caused the wind to be behind us for the climb, a great looping path with no cover as we ascended this bleak land of yellow and brown and black. Fragments of burnt grasses whipped in the air as the snow began to fall harder and the wind concentrated in the pass. The tailwind was no boon as the wind and snow slapped at the roadside, buffeting us in a new direction every time. Cries of fear escaped my mouth as we were blocked near the top, winds roaring past as clouds funneled through our pass. But we were near the top, and it was down to the sea on the other side. We were past the worst of it, the wind was at our back and we would be sheltered on the other side.
A rule of long distance riding to understand is that there will always be a headwind, no matter which direction you are going. It is best to simply bear it and remember a cross wind is more hazardous. As we crossed from Yufu's scorched sides to Tsurumi's steep descent, we found ourselves facing the strongest winds yet, filled with moisture from the ocean. Icy flurries now gave way to fat wet flakes spattering our faces. Through gritted teeth we could only smile on the absurdity of the occasion, a series of reasonable choices leading us into a thoroughly unreasonable situation. We passed by an amusement park, frozen over and filled with what we could only assume to be unhappy vacationers. We were very much looking forward to spending an afternoon on rollercoasters, but adverse conditions make better stories anyways.
As we found the edge of the mountain's highland and began the 800m decent into Beppu, we found ourselves in whiteout conditions, a spring snowstorm! Laughing at how terrible our luck kept sinking, we slowly made our way down the dozens of switchbacks, pausing to push aside snow building up on our glasses and checking to make sure each other's nerve hasn't yet broken. Bamboo groves groaned and swayed in the snowladen wind. I used to think it was something that it snowed sideways back home, but here it snows upwards and somehow that's even worse. The wind currents visible as vortexing eddies splashed on our heads as it curled around the road surface, pushing us this way and that. Traffic slowed to a crawl as bewildered drivers struggled with the snow and also trying to get around the lunatics biking in this mess. Our shoulders, elbows and hands aching from the strain of balancing in the wind for so long, we kept going, becoming soaked from the wet snow sticking to us.
Finally we broke below Tsurumi's grasp into the milder air as we found Beppu below. Plumes of steam like cherry trees erupting from the dozens of onsens that the city is renowned for. Safe at last. Making our way across the city to our onsen, we noted how today was the first day we truly felt weary by the end, nearly defeated by the combined efforts of the mountains. My nerves were totally shot as we arrived, muscles making mutiny as we checked into our lovely century old ryokan. This was our only booking we did in advance and the haste through terrible conditions has taught us that perhaps more stable transportation is required when making hard bookings that demand you travel on a certain day no matter the conditions. We will make more time in the future to wait out bad conditions if we come across them. I have no desire to go back into those mountains, they hate me and I wish to leave them be.
The ryokan is a series of villas with a central bath and dining hall. When we arrived they sat us in a waiting room and served us matcha (finely ground green tea) and a small pastry. The hot tea warmed our frozen knuckles as we exchanged pleasantries with a couple from Colorado who came under much less arduous transportation. After we were led to our room, across a red wooden bridge that spans the rider that the ryokan straddles, we found it to be an enormous traditional villa with an entryway, hallway, bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a tatami-floored room with a low table and a closet full of futons. The tatami room also hosted a sunroom with chairs and a tea station as well as a traditional tea room that we were told was kept as decoration as the tea ceremonies no longer were held at this place. I suppose you need to pay more for that. There is a lighted nook off the tatami room that may have been for a small shrine at once point, but now hosts a piece of art. The walls, ceilings and doors are in the traditional style, if not all traditional materials. This place seems to be what one would see in tourism brochures. It is quite comfortable and peaceful. The bath is a wooden tub that we are told is filled from the onsen spring itself. We will be sure to use that later. We were told that dinner would be at 6 and they would come find us and lead us to the dining hall.
We dressed in the provided simple kimonos, which amount to baggy pants, a wrap top with two tie-offs, and a colorful overcoat. Tabi socks with a gap sewn in for sandals compliment the outfit, along with wooden sandals that click click as you walk. Awkwardly in our case. Any onsen hotel we've stayed at has encouraged us to wear the provided clothes while we're there, and we were once again happy to oblige. There is something relaxing about changing into specific hotel clothes. We headed to our respective baths, no Japanese people seem to be staying here so we felt the need to cover tattoos unnecessary. The baths were modestly sized outdoor baths with wooden buildings encompassing them. The usual showers complimented the setup. Natural boulders made up the edges of the pool and climbed up the slope to the wooden walls around the complex. The waters were clear and odourless with only the barest hint of green or perhaps blue to them. If not for the tan colored deposits on the rocks and the black discolouration below the water level I might have assumed this water was simply heated municipal water. The bottom of the bath was decorated with gold colored tiles sprinkled as if confetti, this was to provide depth for the bather I think.
After, we sat in our sunroom, reading and writing as we do. Bryce found some snacks nearby as we never had a proper lunch, and found the necessary accoutrements to make us green tea from the loose tea provided. It produced a rich green brew, fragrant and flavorful. We do love the tea here. We took some time to do the primping and preening that we ignore for speed most days and were called for dinner.
We were sat and were promptly served our first courses, a salt grilled shellfish, fugu (pufferfish) skin in ponzu, and fried marinated fish, with an ume wine on ice. The fugu was a surprise, knowing how toxic the fish is and how few licenses exist in the country to serve this dish. A significant fraction of our reservation may have gone to serving this. It was delightful, though possibly our lack of knowledge made it hard to fully appreciate. Small pieces in a ponzu sauce made for a balance of sweet, salty, and sour. The shellfish I found divine, like a scallop just kissed with heat. The marinated fish was kind of like a chicken wing tip and I didn't like it as much. Next was a white fish soup with egg, light and fun as it was served on above a heating flame and once the soup began to boil we were instructed to pour in the whisked egg. A comforting dish. A plate of pufferfish sashimi came after, colourless transluscent slices served with lime, roe, pate, and green onions. Kind of like eating oysters in a way. Next, a few fatty beef cubes. We didn't catch the origin of them, but assume Wagyu or Kobe or similar. We were given a stone tablet above another heating flame and grilled our own. Fun, but I want a cook to make my steak correctly as I'm but an amateur. The beef was unbelievable, pillowy soft with a chew as light as marshmallows. With it we were served fried pufferfish, which reminded me of alligator, i.e. It looks like fish and tastes like chicken. It was lovely, but the dipping seasoning put it over the top. Msg? Yes please! It caused a curious sensation of the mouth which we later learned was in fact a very small dose of the toxin and proof of the quality of the fish. Next we recieved two rolls that were listed as soft roe sushi and were a flavour explosion. Easily the best dish, creamy, savoury, just the right size for a large mouthful of delight. For the next course, wouldn't you know it, the rest of the pufferfish. I think we got a whole one between the two of us. This was a hotpot with vegetables and the remainder of the fugu. This seems like a way to use up the spine and sets up the last hot dish, which is a risotto. This was a large pot of rather wet risotto with egg, I think intended to fill us up so we leave satisfied as the dishes were quite small. Served with it were pickled vegetables and a single strawberry, sliced down the middle. We were a little skeptical of a single strawberry for dessert, but sure enough, it was the best strawberry we had ever tasted.
Truthfully, the fugu is a status dish and we were enjoying the skill of the chef rather than the contents of the dish. Getting to experience the toxin was a surprise, but certainly this is not like the beef dish which stands on its flavor. Fugu is a relatively tasteless dish that entirely stands on the elite culinary shoulders of the chefs entrusted to serve it, no other reason. Knowing that, we might have requested something else as this makes the dish akin to shark fin soup, a bland dish of an endangered species eaten entirely for clout. If we didn't have a bottle of shochu over dinner I might not have enjoyed myself.
After dinner, we were delighted to see the ryokan lit up for the evening, red bridge lit with lanterns and the waterfall on the river illuminated. A dip in the onsen to relax, a bottle of sparkling sake, and planning for the next few days. Our next destination event is a rave in Fukuoka. The slow bass music of Vancouver has yet to taint these areas and they spin trance here so I am so down. We're throwing out our route in favour of an easy spin on the coast so we're looking forward to that. Apparently we can get tickets to the amusement park nearby from the front desk so we'll have to do that before we leave. Breakfast is at 830 and we're not to be late!

2024.03.17 22:13 123abcde321 Silverback gloves and skates

I work at a hotel in Vancouver, and after the Capitals game on Sunday we discovered a tote bag with gloves and skates. Just thought I would put it out there in case someone knows who might be missing this stuff.

The visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /hockey opinion.
It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it here

Process

How does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers.
The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /hockey!

1 (1.37) Florida Panthers - 44-17-4 3-1-0 copaceticvindication says Our only two losses in like the last 16 games are one goal losses with the goal coming in the final minute(both times people i was watching the game with said we are about to go into OT) so really we are basically on a 16 game winning streak if you think about it. Vladdy has already looked like a natural fit on the first line with Barkov and reino, and kyle okposo should be another good addition from our AHL team in buffalo, hopefully Erod and Ekblad aren't hurt too bad from that calgary gam, we're going to need them with how we basically play only playoffs teams until april.
2 (3.87) New York Rangers 0 41-18-4 1-1-0 nodessb says Honestly I can't hate on any of the deadline moves that Drury made, especially after the game against the Blues. I don't wanna speak too soon but it seems like we may have another Copp/Vatrano situation on our hands which is probably all this team needs: some complementary pieces to supplement the core. The new additions already seem to fit like a glove, so hopefully they can keep rolling through the playoffs. LGR!
3 (4.07) Vancouver Canucks 0 42-17-7 3-0-0 atomic_penguin27 says Good, have some concerns regarding PDO and goaltending without Thatcher Demko
4 (5.5) Dallas Stars 1 40-17-9 3-0-0 atomic_penguin27 says Dallas has won something like 5 straight but over bad teams and two of those were in a shootout and ot, they can't beat the tops teams
5 (6.23) Winnipeg Jets -1 40-18-5 1-2-0 rasera says A string of two weeks of "bad play" that still results in the Jets going 4-3 in that timeframe. Bowness was quoted as saying that this years flu is "the worst he's seen in his coaching career" so I am merely blaming that and moving forward. Credit to Dallas, Seattle, and Vancouver for bringing their A game to humble us. Better to be humbled now while sick then during a playoff run. Toffoli and Miller should inject some much needed health and a nice amount of depth. Excited for the next few weeks going forward!
6 (6.27) Colorado Avalanche 1 40-20-5 3-0-0 hockeycross says What a trade deadline week for the Avs. Mittelstadt is potentially a perfect fit at 2C, and some solid depth with Trenin and Duhaime. Walker also fills in Byrams spot on Defense. Walker gives the Avs 3 right shot D which is great. Annunen seems to have won the back up job. This Team is looking and feeling like a contender. LETS GO!!!
7 (6.5) Carolina Hurricanes -1 39-19-6 3-0-0 timmablimma says I really like our group, but I like it better today. Donnie Turtleneck has now gotten the #1 Offseason Defenseman and #1 in-season trade targets this year. We're cooking with Oil, Gas and Gravy. Since acquiring Guentzel we're 3-0 and averaging 5 goals per game. He hasn't played a minute yet. We be vibing. Also kudos to the Hurricanes Wives and Girlfriends for still throwing Bunting's fiancee a party after the trade. I loved Bunting in his time here, but you have to make this move if you can, especially when Nikishin and Nadeau weren't included.
8 (6.57) Boston Bruins 0 38-13-15 3-0-1 maxpowr9 says A much better week for the Bruins. Sweeping the Leafs in the regular season; our likely 1st round playoff, feels amazing. I feel this TDL was a bit of a dud, which was a bit expected. Sweeney should be happy the trade to LA was botched. That long embrace after the W over the Pens shows there's something special with those two; chemistry is more important than business sometimes.
9 (8.03) Edmonton Oilers 0 39-21-3 2-1-1 atomic_penguin27 says Edmonton is looking good, hopefully there goaltending and defense keep p playing this well
10 (8.6) Toronto Maple Leafs 0 37-19-8 2-2-0 lang14 says Trade deadline grade: B-. Good playoff moves. I'm glad we didn't trade the 1st round pick. It would take more than one of Tanev, Zadorov, Hanifin to make me feel comfortable going into the playoffs given what Florida, Vegas and Colorado have done. It feels especially bad given how good Matthews has been this year, but unless you get 2 of those big pieces on defense, and no offense to Lybushkin and Edmundson but they're not pushing this team over the line. Just gotta hope that the big four can do some damage in the playoffs.
11 (11) Nashville Predators 0 37-25-4 2-0-2 thefragrancevol says My takeaway from last night: THE POINT STREAK CONTINUES!
12 (12.47) Vegas Golden Knights 0 34-23-7 1-2-0 anon_agentd05b says Well the Knights sure love to make a splash. Mantha, Hanifin and ...Hertl... You are all Vegas Golden Knights. I liked Miromanov but Hanifin is a great addition especially if he signs here, Mantha is a fine addition not sure it really solves any of the problems but, definitely didn't make the team worse. Hertl is the interesting one. That contract even with 17% retained is going to be really rough towards the end, all the way out in 2030. He's been good in the playoffs can't deny that, the issue is, it'll have been 5 seasons this year since he's been in the playoffs (assuming the knights make it, not guaranteed by any means right now) and he won't have much time to adapt to the team before the playoffs start. Only time will tell I guess. Anyways, how did Vegas get TWO division rivals to trade them major stars, that's just nonsense, I slightly understand the Sharks but Calgary damn.
13 (14.03) Los Angeles Kings 0 32-20-11 1-1-1 atomic_penguin27 says LA please figure out if your good or not
14 (14.33) Tampa Bay Lightning 1 34-25-6 1-1-0 mcrsft3brdev says Welcome to Duclair and Dumba, both making immediate impacts, Dumba with a fight against Couturier and Duclair with a goal and an assist in a 7-0 rout of the Flyers. It's good to see them gel immediately, hopefully they can provide a bit of a spark. Vasy also gets the 30th shutout of his career. Tortorella got ejected, What a fun night 😂 Let's Go Bolts!!!!
15 (16.03) Detroit Red Wings -1 33-25-6 0-3-0 americanadian98 says Detroit is way too dependent on Larkin... 2-7 this season in the 9 games he has missed. They look lost out there without him.
16 (16.2) Philadelphia Flyers 0 33-24-8 1-1-1 assassin2107 says Flyers doing the Flyers thing of pulling off something really good (Winning against Florida in a very tight game) while also doing something very bad (Getting the crap beat out of them versus Tampa). Don't let the score fool you, the 0-7 game was not that close. I'm not saying I thought we would or should have won, but if you're trying to convince people you are definitely a playoff team, you can't let yourself lose like that.
17 (17.67) New York Islanders 0 29-20-14 3-0-0 ThatMikeGuy429 says I am starting to believe again, the cope turned to hope, and the hope might be turning into regality. Last night's win over the Ducks was the first game all year that I was not worried that this team was going to blow it and give up 5 goals in 5 minutes, but all that really says is that I am ready to get hurt again.
18 (19.43) Washington Capitals 3 30-23-9 2-0-0 dagetawayman421 says Looks like we ended up keeping Dowd, Chucky, and NAK. Then we decided to stomp on the Penguins (a team lacking any young talent) with our young talent, and almost made it thru the week without giving up a goal. The young guys are playing well: Connor McMIchael, Hendrix Lapierre, Aliaksei Protas, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Alex Alexeyev, and Rasmus Sandin. We've also got Oshie, Dowd, and Fehervary on IR, so eventually Lapierre and Miroshnichenko will make their way back to Hershey (for hopefully another Calder Cup run), but man, these young guys are gonna be fun to watch in the future. Looks like Oshie, Fehervary, and Dowd will be coming back to the lineup soon too! The Caps are 3 points behind the Red Wings with two games in hand and 2 head to head matchups while they're five points behind the Flyers and Lightning with three games in hand and a head to head matchup against each of them. There's a HUGE western conference roadtrip coming up: @WPG, @EDM, @SEA, and @VAN.
19 (19.5) Calgary Flames 0 31-28-5 1-3-0 kellervo says The team had a hot-headed loss against Seattle, a gutsy win against Tampa, and a disappointing loss against Florida. The team has to string together yet another long winning streak to have even a chance to make the playoffs, even with Vegas stumbling hard.
20 (19.57) St. Louis Blues -2 32-29-3 1-3-0 beedrill13 says Well we likely Are out of the playoff race and we didn’t even make any moves during the trade deadline. Ugh.
21 (20.4) Minnesota Wild 1 31-27-7 2-0-1 paynetrain181999 says John Hynes has balls of steel, what a move pulling the goalie in OT, risking losing the 1 point from an OT loss if Nashville scored, and it worked to perfection. Big brain strategies aside, 5/6 possible points this week is a good result, lets see if they can keep it up. Also, a new prospect by the name of Marat Khusnutdinov has arrived, we expect him to join the team this week.
22 (20.93) New Jersey Devils -2 31-29-4 1-2-0 silkeystev says My hunger strike and the bad man is gone. We even have new goalies. Yet I feel so empty.... The season is basically over and even though the last season with Vitek was rough, it's hard to imagine he wont rebound in some capacity? I don't know anymore, I just wish we weren't looking at the lottery again. Anyway, most important game is today, nothing will matter expect making the Rangers question why they lost to us.
23 (21.9) Seattle Kraken 0 28-24-11 2-1-0 Mukuu says Great win against the Jets followed by a great win again the Flames followed by forgetting to play hockey against the Jets. Kraken hockey baby! Kraken need multiple monumental collapses in addition to being one of the hottest teams in hockey in order to make the playoffs, its over Johnny, its over. The Kraken offense is just brutally inconsistent and without some reliability in that, we are not going to be rattling off wins. Daccord has a .919sv% wih a 2.46 GAA. Even before Daccord goaltending was good, defense has been great. Please Kraken, please score some damn goals.
24 (23.23) Buffalo Sabres 1 30-30-5 1-1-1 atomic_penguin27 says Sabres are giving their fans optimism for next season, don't fall for it Sabre fans.
25 (23.63) Pittsburgh Penguins -1 28-27-8 1-3-0 longjumpingscene2327 says Here’s to the tank so we can get a top 10 pick. Not even sure that this isn’t the plan based on the three games Since the deadline. 1 goal on 113 shots for <1% shooting. Woof.
26 (27.37) Montreal Canadiens 1 24-30-10 1-2-0 mdlt97 says The Habs top line continues to have good games against top teams and that's where the positives start to end.
27 (27.47) Arizona Coyotes -1 26-34-5 1-3-0 recockulous says Aside from an inexplicably perfect game against the free-falling Red Wings, the Coyotes are playing like hot trash. Much of their problem is on defense. Put plainly: the Coyotes six D-men who hit the ice Sunday for the Yotes' shameful 7-4 loss to the bottom-feeding Hawks draw a total annual salary of $6,650.000.00, or just about $3 million less than Seth Jones is paid. Jones had 6 points against the Coyotes this week. Sheesh.
28 (27.93) Ottawa Senators 0 25-33-4 0-2-1 driftshade11 says Holy shit, we're awful. 7 losses in a row, and I'm not sure things are gonna get any better any time soon. At this point, you gotta start wondering if the rebuild needs to be restarted, or if there's something worth salvaging here still.
29 (28.17) Anaheim Ducks 0 23-38-3 1-2-0 atomic_penguin27 says Hi duck fans, one day are rivalry will be glorious, love a Sharks fan
30 (28.43) Columbus Blue Jackets 0 22-32-10 2-2-0 steckums says It was a bit of a sleepy trade deadline for the Jackets. Moved an expiring contract (Roslavic) and someone we've had on the block for the better part of the last 2 seasons (Peeke). Our interim GM/President of Hockey Ops John Davidson said he wanted any big decisions to be left to the new GM. Until then, we've got some extra roster spots to get some young guys some reps. Sometimes that results in blowing out the reigning Cup champs, and sometimes it is your 14th straight loss at Pittsburgh.
31 (30.87) San Jose Sharks 0 16-40-7 1-1-1 atomic_penguin27 says New Sharks ranker here, unpopular opinion, trading Hertl as the right move. Bords has looked good and Eklund continues to impress. Chrona has potential some exciting glimpses for the future
32 (31.47) Chicago Blackhawks 0 17-43-5 2-2-0 sandman730 says The Hawks were the first team to been eliminated from playoff contention this season. They ended their 22-game road losing streak, earning their first road win since Nov 9. atomic_penguin27 says Chicago is looking good to have a good Shot at Celebrini

2024.02.21 18:57 basis4day [TOMT] Early 90’s Cartoon Show; team of good guys. Maybe super powers maybe not.

I have a vague recollection a cartoon series i saw in the early 90’s. I was in the US but near the Canadian border and could pick up one channel from I believe Vancouver. So it might not have been widely seen in the US but maybe in Canada.
It’s definitely a cartoon. It was a team of good guy characters. I want to say it was action slapstick. I don’t remember if any members had super powers or if they used tech.
The leader of that team was a white male with brown hair and a white shirt. iirc he wore a single red glove.
It had multiple episodes but I doubt it ran for more than a season.
I want to say there was a second male character who looked a lot like Simon Belmont from “Captain N”. I think he had some sort of flamethrower or flame powers. There was a female character on the team who kind of looked like Kim Possible.
Its not “Defenders of Dinotron City”
I’ll know immediately if it’s the right show if I see a picture of the guy with the red glove.
Thx.

2024.01.29 19:53 GMBarryTrotz Ranking Every Potential Preds Trade

Here is every trade possibility I can imagine with a ranking of how likely I think it is to happen. For this purpose, Forsberg, O'Reilly, Josi and all our ELCs are untouchable. Basically everyone else is listed.
5/5 -
Tyson Barrie - He wants out, we want him out. The only issue is his salary. If Trotz retains half his cap, he's only at $2.25m and an expiring UFA. A good deadline pickup for a team like Pittsburgh that needs some juice on the power play. I wouldn't expect more than a 3rd or 4th for him, but with retention it could climb higher.
4/5 - Fabbro or Carrier - While I think Fabbro has been fantastic for us this year, rumor is that Trotz doesn't see his play style as a long term fit under Bruno. Carrier also is a great trade for any team looking for a puck-moving 2D who can also play support for your top line defender. Tampa and Vancouver are both looking for D support. I'd expect a prospect and a 2nd in return.
3/5 - Saros - Obviously the easiest trade we could make. The question is if Trotz wants to pull the trigger. New Jersey and LA are desperate for good goaltending and Saros is starting to heat up. NJ in particular would be a great fit, as they play a similar style to Bruno, and he could slot in much quicker. Both have amazing prospect pools and lots of picks. We're talking Byfield and at least a first. (This is a good time to say that Askarov doesn't matter for this trade - we'd likely get a goalie back in return.)
Sissons - Great pick up for a team that needs a versatile 3rd line center with plenty of grit. At only 2 years left at $2.8m, this is a Nick Bonino level trade that could help take a team to the promised land.
Trenin - He's having a down year but he's got grit and he drops gloves. Good addition for a team that is looking for Jam.
2/5 Lankinin - I think Preds fans would rather trade him, but I just don't see any team who wants to rent a backup goalie for a few months. He's not quality enough to be a Cup winning goalie and all he would do is win you 6-7 more games between the deadline and April. He's not the difference between the playoffs and a cup, which is what teams are hoping for.
McCarron / Sherwood / Smith / Jankowski / Gurionov - See above. We've got grinders in spades. The question is who would want one.
McDonagh - Any team would want McDonagh on their back line. But McDonagh has a full NTC and likely doesn't want to move. But maybe if a contender like Vancouver wants him? Who knows - maybe he feels another cup calling.
Novak - A Tanner Jeannot esque trade could be in the cards for the versatile 26 year old. However, he's really shown that he can be a difference maker and I think Trotz keeps him as part of the "rebuild."
1/5 Schenn - Had to include him on the list but his salary plus term mean he's a rock on this team.
Wildcards Askarov - some say Trotz would rather move him than Saros. If so, expect an equal level prospect back in return. Or perhaps someone like Zegras who fits our timeline better. Tomasino - If Trotz wants to give up on prospects this quick, a Glass/Nolan type trade could be in the cards.

2024.01.05 05:27 sasksasquatch I really think the NHL is heading towards another Bertuzzi-Moore type incident. What is the cause and is there a way to prevent it?

Retaliation. Retribution. Revenge. Old Time Hockey. You hurt my guy now I am going to hurt your guy. "Policing the game". "Game Management". All of these have been mentioned recently when it comes to stuff happening in the game of hockey and is complete bull shit. Stuff is coming to a head and something bad I feel is going to happen soon.
CONTEXT
The Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident needs to be told in-depth here so those not familiar with what happened and only know of one part of it can get the full story.
February 16, 2004, Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche
In a close game between the Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche, Steve Moore delivered a targeted, predatory hit to the head of Canucks captain Markus Naslund who was in a vulnerable position where you can watch Moore adjust to make sure he catches him in the head. There was no penalty on the play (referee thought both players were going for the puck from his angle, a replay shows otherwise) as it was a quickly developing play however Canucks head coach Marc Crawford was furious at the lack of call after the game. Brian Burke called Moore a borderline NHLer attacking a star in the game. This only became more pronounced when there was no suspension or any type of punishment given to Steve Moore for what was a dirty hit. Brad May says there is going to be a bounty on Steve Moore's head. The Vancouver Canucks won this game 1-0 but all the talk afterwards was the hit.
March 3, 2004, Vanocuver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche
In a game which had all the NHL brass in attendance, this game is hard fought but not dirty, lots of penalties called, a fight between Brookbank and Worrell (Brookbank won the fight handily), but nothing out of hand. The game had a Joe Sakic hat-trick and Alex Tanguay had 5 points but the Avalanche were unable to hold the lead as the game ends in a 5-5 tie. Steve Moore had fourth line duty as he only played over seven minutes in this game and outside of his shift amount and TOI, he has zeroes across his stat line.
March 8, 2004, Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks SHIT HITS THE FAN HARD
I'm just going to say this before I get into the details of this game, the officiating in this game was fucking terrible.
Just over 6 minutes into this game Peter Worrell and Brad May fight as well as Steve Moore and Matt Cooke squaring off. With 6 minutes left to go in the first, it is 1-0 Avalanche and the wheels fall off for the Canucks in net. Four goals in one minute forty seconds makes it 5-0 Avalanche and Dan Cloutier was pulled after the fourth goal. Worrell and May had their second fight of the evening and things are really getting heated going into first intermission.
According to The Hockey Guy video on this topic I am talking about, there was a phone call made to the referees during the first intermission of this game saying, look out, Vancouver may go looking for a pound of flesh, this might have resulted in some of the calls against Vancouver.
The second period starts and the game is heated, Brad May scores twice and celebrates a little too hard and gets a 10 minute misconduct, the referees ignore the shit the Avalanche are doing while penalizing the Canucks for softer stuff, Colorado was getting called for stuff, but they were still getting away with some egregious penalties. Colorado makes it 6-2 on a 5-on-3 powerplay and that how we go into the second intermission.
Early in the third period Colorado scores a SH goal off the stick of Kariya, 7-2 Avalanche. A powerplay goal on a soft call makes it 8-2. A play heads up ice and Bertuzzi sees himself behind Steve Moore and decides to get his piece of flesh. One punch from behind later, Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore are dogpiled by everyone and Steve Moore gets injured bad. Bertuzzi ejected for attempt to injure, Brad May and Curt Sauer ejected for fighting in the play. Colorado scores again on one of the longest powerplays I can remember after a very obvious missed tripping call against the Avalanche. That's not even the end of it from this game. with just over two to go, Peter Worrell spears Brookbank twice, Brookbank wants him to drop the gloves but Worrell knows that Brookbank will have him for lunch, both get misconducts and are ejected from the game. While on the way out, Peter Worrell tries to get tough with some fans shouting stuff at him and tries to attack the fans, and the fans are getting aggressive towards Worrell who jabs at them with his stick.
THE AFTERMATH
Steve Moore is injured and is wheelchair bound for a while
Todd Bertuzzi is suspended for the rest of the season going into the lockout and the IIHF says that since he is still suspended by the NHL, he cannot come over to Europe to play and earn a paycheck while the NHL is having its lockout.
Steve Moore slaps a civil lawsuit in every direction of the Canucks. Bertuzzi, Marc Crawford, Brian Burke, I know all of them are at least mentioned by name. The only one of these I remember ever actually going to court is Bertuzzi, the financial amount that Moore wanted was ludicrous given where he was in the lineup, what his probable NHL income would be for his skill level were two very different things.
Brad May more recently, (in 2020) has said some stuff, saying Moore was committing insurance fraud and that he had/has exaggerated his injuries.
Trevor Linden is interviewed a few weeks after this incident and says, it was a situation that developed and the NHL allowed to happen.
Todd Bertuzzi suspension is basically the rest of the 2003-2004 season, and since he is not able to earn a paycheck from playing overseas in a European league, he basically cannot earn money from hockey for what would have been the 2004-2005 season, had there been one. When he is re-instated by Bettman, he brings up that he wasn't allowed to play in other leagues so he couldn't earn money from hockey so he is eligible to start the 2005-2006 season.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO THE GAME NOW
Steve Moore's hit on Markus Naslund was dirty and it wasn't punished by the referee who had a bad angle, nor the NHL, who gave Moore nothing as way of a fine or suspension for the play. I believed this part played into the Vancouver Canucks going for their pound of flesh, getting revenge, retribution, retaliation, whatever you want to call it, a lack of discipline handed out by the NHL and the Canucks decided that the not enough justice had been handed out, Steve Moore's career ended in an instance.
You take a look around the league now and what do you see, players making predatory plays and not facing the proper repercussions for their actions.
WHAT CAN THE NHL DO TO AVOID THIS SITUATION
There is some very basic stuff the NHL can do to avoid it, and they all feel like simple fixes to me.
Kill the retribution by calling the dirty plays properly. Nick Cousins has had two dirty hits in the last month and finished both games, no suspensions or fines, it is bull shit. Gudbranson even went after him for the dirty hit and is now suspended, the Gudbranson stuff should have never happened because Cousins should have had 5 and a game misconduct for his hit from behind.
Stop with, the player who got hit should know he was coming. I'm going to apply this to something else, I'm driving recklessly behind another car but he sees me in his rearview mirror, I slam into him and hurt him, I claim I shouldn't have to pay more into my insurance because he saw me coming and had the opportunity to avoid the accident, hence he is at fault as much as I am. Any judge is going to look at you and is going to think, "Is this fucking idiot serious?". You hit from behind, you saw his numbers and decided to hit the person anyways, you are at fault, you should be penalized heavily for what you did as it was reckless and dangerous and should be punished accordingly.
If player's want retaliation after a clean hit they should face harsh punishments as well. Every time it seems like there is a clean hit the automatic response is, he has to fight for hitting the guy cleanly and doing his job. The NHL has been better about calling the instigator in these situations but it feel like there should be more punishment for this situation. I'm also getting tired of seeing this, I understand wanting to standup for your guy but it just feels like a player getting penalized for doing his job well and within the rules.
Crack down on sneaky shit. If a player is going to act like a rat on the ice, don't tolerate the shit. Marchand wants to try and goad someone on the other team into a penalty with his hand in the face, call the hand in the face roughing, he bitches about it, give him a 10 minute misconduct. We shouldn't be seeing stuff where Brandon Prust spears Marchand in the family jewels and he says it is the best $5000 dollars he has ever spent, don't allow the rat event to happen in the first place, you don't get the retribution like that.
Stop with the no previous record bull shit. This is how Evgeni Malkin avoided suspension for so long, he is a very dirty player and got away with it until it became too much. A history of being dirty in different ways doesn't mean he hasn't had a history of something, all of the previous plays had something in common, they were all dirty plays.
CONCLUSION
The NHL on its current trajectory is heading towards this event, the NHL made Bertuzzi the scapegoat last time, he isn't going to be making the play next time it is going to be someone else, the only consistencies right now that exist are Gary Bettman, Department of Player Safety not doing their job properly, and referees who aren't doing their job well.
