This Mindset Shift Was Key To Finally Building Muscle And Strength
Women's Health
Growing up in Puerto Rico, I was an active child and fell in love with volleyball. When I was 10, my mother and I picked up and moved to New York. While adjusting to my new home and my mom's long work hours, I had to take care of myself more. As a result, I started gaining weight.
By age 21, I was dealing with lower back pain from a car accident and became pregnant with my daughter. I weighed 250 pounds, which caused sciatica pain and made carrying my pregnancy harder. At one point, it was even difficult to walk. My self-image took a hit, I was depressed, and I felt like I lost myself.

My daughter inspired me to make major changes in my health and start a fitness routine.

After I gave birth to my daughter, I hit a turning point.
In 2018, I decided to sign up for XSport, a local gym facility, and started using YouTube to teach myself different workouts. I also worked with a personal trainer for a month to learn the basics of equipment and exercises in the gym and get a meal plan started. My mom was always big on working out, so we would go together as well.
I started seeing results, but at that point, I was only focused on losing weight, not strength or building muscle. I did cardio-heavy workouts seven days a week. It was mostly the treadmill and elliptical.

When I saw the number on the scale continue to drop, it sparked my curiosity for the machines and weights.

Luckily, my boyfriend at the time was a bodybuilder and taught me a lot. He gave me the tools I needed to build muscle and challenge myself on my own.
Transitioning out of cardio-focused workouts and light weights and into a new routine was challenging. It was exciting to know that I was taking the right steps to see the results I wanted.
Learning so many new things at once and then putting it into action was also intimidating. I felt overwhelmed. Between early morning gym sessions, measuring my meals, creating enough time to stretch, and hitting my water goals, it was a lot.
I knew I had a foundation of fitness, but I needed to put the pieces together in a way that worked for me and for my goals. Things didn't start to click for me until waking up at 4 a.m. for cardio became second nature.

Now, I approach my training like a bodybuilder and often do two workouts a day.

I currently train at a bodybuilding gym (Xtreme Fitness) six days a week and do cardio about seven days a week. Generally, I do my cardio in the morning and go back to the gym in the evening to strength train. I used to have push and pull days, but now I have four leg days and one upper-body day once a week. On my rest days, I'm usually working, so it’s more of an active recovery day.
Some of my go-to exercises include Bulgarian split squats, goblet squats, leg curls, and leg extensions. I try to stay away from squatting because of my sciatica. For upper body, I’ll do side and front lateral raises, lat pulldowns, and seated cable rows.
I usually do four sets of 15 to 20 reps for every exercise. Each week, I’ll try to up the weights and test myself, and if I feel like I can’t hit my usual goal, then I’ll max out at 12 reps instead.
I’m preparing to compete in my first bodybuilding competition later this year in the women’s wellness division, which focuses on bigger legs and glutes and a leaner upper body. I’m also in the process of becoming a certified personal trainer.
Bodybuilding is less about numbers and PR’s, but a few years ago I was able to leg press 675 pounds for 12 reps. We call that “ego lifting,” because it’s not necessary. While I still lift heavy from time to time, I’d rather avoid injuring myself. For example, for leg extensions, I’ll stick to around 135 pounds for 20 reps. And for an RDL, I won’t go heavier than 115 pounds.

I learned what worked and what didn't trying different diets until I found a sustainable plan and started measuring out my meals.

Before I started hitting the gym, I tried Herbalife and lost 25 pounds. Eventually, it got expensive, so I had to stop. I ended up gaining the weight back. Once I started training, I tried the keto diet for about five months and lost 50 pounds. With that, I hit 170 pounds.
I didn't realize it at the time, but I was actually doing dirty keto, which I found out thanks to my ex-boyfriend. With his help, we restructured my meals, and I got off keto. Not long after making the switch, I had better energy levels, improved focus, and noticeable progress in the gym.
Now, my new bodybuilding coach has me eat 1,400 calories a day. (Reminder: That's what works for me, but you should always work with an expert before making big calorie or diet changes.) For breakfast, I have two whole eggs with lean brown beef and some pineapple. For lunch, I’ll have grilled chicken with any green vegetable.
My pre-workout is 30 grams of cashews, and my post-workout is 30 grams of cream of rice with one scoop of protein and water mixed together. For dinner, I usually eat salmon and sweet potato. I measure all my meals beforehand and drink a gallon of water a day.

I had to reframe my mindset around changes in my weight to enable muscle gain.

One of the biggest blocks I had to overcome was accepting that building muscle also came with gaining weight. People explained the science to me, but I still wasn't processing it. I was so focused on losing weight for so long that I found myself frustrated about working hard at the gym and not seeing more weight coming off.
At the same time, I started to finally see my muscles coming through. That's when I began to understand weight in a new way. It was challenging to think of gaining weight as my new goal. I even had to give myself pep talks to help myself lean into what was needed in order to see progress. Once I let the fear go, everything started falling into place.

Learning the importance of discipline made a huge difference in and out of the gym.

Of all my goals, I’m most proud of my ability to stay disciplined. There are still days I wake up and don’t want to train or eat the same foods. But I feel like I’ve mastered the discipline that was needed to get me to where I’m at. I learned that motivation comes and goes—it’s not consistent. But it’s about showing up for yourself. Discipline has had a positive affect on my work life and at-home life as a mom. I can apply it to everything.
I want women to know how important mindset is. You really have to think about what you're getting into before an attempt at your goal is even made. You have to be willing to dedicate the time and remind yourself that this for you and nobody else. Get comfortable being uncomfortable, and in the end, it will always be worth it.

EssayMarket.net
EssayMarket.net operates a bit differently from your standard essay writing service. It functions as a marketplace, where you can browse through profiles of numerous writers, compare their qualifications, and read reviews left by other students. This transparency allows you to pick a writer who best matches your specific needs and budget.
The control you have over the selection process is a massive advantage. You're not just assigned a writer; you get to choose who you work with based on their expertise in your topic and their track record with previous clients. This can significantly boost your confidence in the quality of the essay you’ll receive.

Their pricing is transparent, and they offer various discounts throughout the year, making their services more accessible to students who are tight on funds.
When choosing an essay writing service, consider what aspects are most important to you: cost, control, quality, or perhaps the availability of customer support. No matter which service you choose, remember to use these tools as aids to enhance your learning and help manage your workload.

2024.05.14 08:36 BillFireCrotchWalton OP gets really mad about a Muslim character in a TV show being gay "for absolutely no reason."

The show in question is Ramy, a comedy/drama on Hulu. For some context, the show is mostly about a Muslim family, and the character in question is Uncle Naseem, an outwardly hyper-masculine, racist, misogynist man who is clearly overcompensating for something.

Full Comments

Original post for posterity:
Like what was the point?? He was funny as hell, and I wish we could get deeper into his character, but why make him gay??? I wonder if the season where he made the uncle gay was the season the show got a Golden Globe.
Update: it’s been so fun going back and forth with you queens, please keep going, I love how butt hurt you guys are 😭 but then again I’m sure everything’s numb down there by now 😂
Update #2: I see I hurt some feelings here, let me just say, I hope you have nightmares about what I said, I hope the PreP in your stomach makes you throw up tonight, I hope you cry yourselves to sleep. Thank you for being so entertaining during my workday. Byeee queers 🥹
.
Why does it bother you if he is gay? And what do you mean by “absolutely no reason”? The fact that he was gay is exactly what made us get a deeper perspective on the character, which is what you say you wanted. He otherwise was just portrayed as a backward, racist, misogynist. So it was important to show another side to him, not just that he’s the “old crazy uncle.” It shows why he is the way he is, the frustration he has felt his entire life, of being gay and having to hide it, and probably being hyper masculine to compensate . Also, I could be wrong, so feel free to clarify, but if you think Uncle Naseem was “funny as hell” because you actually agree with the comments he was making, I have news for you. The show creators definitely do not want us to agree with Uncle Naseem’s viewpoints. We are supposed to be laughing AT him for the things he is saying, not with him. If you find yourself agreeing with Uncle Naseem’s viewpoints and it bothers you that he’s gay, this show might not be for you .
Because its forced nowadays. If it wasn’t mandated by Hollwood, id have more respect for the writers.
Nah, it’s not forced. It made perfect sense. It’s like when you hear about anti-gay pastors and politicians getting caught on Grindr or with prostitutes. There’s no gay mafia telling Ramy what to do, but that’d be funny though lol
It really is forced, but you can pretend to ignore it.
How is it forced? Everyone disagrees with you. To us, it made perfect sense. I think you don’t like it because you’re a conservative who doesn’t like gay acts depicted
Lmfaoo so since everyone disagrees I should just agree with you all? Those echo chambers really smoothed out your brain.
Then articulate a non-smooth brained reason why you think you can’t have gay characters on TV or why this show in particular shouldn’t have one of the cast members be gay Nah there was no point. But thanks for the essay. why did you even ask the question if you didn’t want a real answer? Lmfaoooooo just cause you agree doesn’t make it a “real answer”. well the only answers you agree with are ones that reinforce the opinion you already hold. if you just wanted people to agree with you then why did you ask a question in the first place? That’s not what I said at all but go off sis
[...]
Actually gays are dying out. Everyone is trams these days.. lesbians are unicorns now
.
I couldn’t disagree more with you. It makes him a more interesting character and puts a new spin on all his past statements and interactions. It makes Naseem more sympathetic because his homophobia is overcompensation and denial. Like they didn’t have to make him a diamond dealer either, but it also makes his antisemitism more interesting being that he has to work with Jews all the time.
Yeah, but he didn’t need to be gay
He didn’t need to be, it just was better for his character. Often times the most homophobic guy is gay. Why does it offend you so much? Do you think being gay is bad?
LMFAOOO such a high school response “oh he doesn’t like gays so he must be gay”. That talking point tracks with your other smooth brained buddies in here
Can you answer the question? Is being gay bad because it’s haram?
.
People just be gay.
Duh
Are you 13?
Ouch that one really hurt 😞
lol ok kid
thanks man🙂‍↕️
.
Dude….this is so mistaken. This isn’t just a DEI move or some shit. You have this really racist and emotionally wrecked uncle in denial and unable to accept his “flaws”. He knows he is for example attracted to men but he cannot accept that that is okay. He finds himself in the sauna getting sucked off because he couldn’t do it anywhere else. And the moment he thinks his niece finds out he goes crazy about it. Curb your homophobia/queerphobia. A show isn’t “infected” by the LGBTQ movement or part of the gay agenda just because it features gay characters. I’m sorry you’re too afraid to live in a world where media isn’t strictly heteronormative.
Oh save the “phobia” garbage lol, they didn’t need to make him gay period
So why did they have to make him straight?
They don’t, but making him gay shouldn’t be his whole storyline, they barely dove into his character and they just make him gay for what?? It just feels lazy.
We’re explaining to you why the reveal that he is secretly gay is essential to his character development yet you completely ignore it and assert that “they didn’t need to make him gay”. It only appears lazy because you do not understand the logic behind it. They constantly show he’s a lonely bitter old man but we just assume it’s cuz he can’t court any women cuz he’s racist. It’s a massive reveal to us that the real reason he can’t court women is because he’s not attracted to them, and he comes from a place where homosexuality is essentially a weakness and so he cannot accept that he’s weak. We see that he was dating a guy for some time but ends up punching him in the face, because for Uncle Naseem the thing he loves is also the thing he hates most about himself. He loves his family but he also hates them. He loves Ramy but he also hates him. He loves men but he also hates being attracted to them. This is what causes the dissonance in his life, because he can’t accept his flaws. The fact that such a hard ass bought a cake for his boyfriend shows how inside he’s still soft and vulnerable like everybody else. You’re gonna keep asking the question. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE HIM GAY? The truth is that Ramy Youssef didn’t have to tell us Uncle Naseem is gay, but if we didn’t know then we would know even less about Uncle Naseem.
Yeah you’re on crack or poppers if you think I’m reading all this LMFAOOO! I’ll respond with just a simple, No you’re wrong. Thank you😇
[...]
I would disagree. Him being secretly gay explains a lot about Naseem’s character flaws, especially concerning his overtly homophobic behavior. He’s very clearly compensating in multiple areas. He’s trying to put on this persona that doesn’t match who he actually is. I think him being gay is actually pretty crucial to the character and story line. I like that you don’t have any issues with the other characters? Others are not perfect either, yet you only seem to care about this.
Nah
You don’t even have any counter arguments, what’s the point of your post other than showing how incoherent you can be.
Awhhh I’m sorry I’m not engaging with you like you desperately want 🥺. Tell me how your day was buddy
You’re the one who posted this and can’t even hold your own lmao, you must not be that bright
You feel better? I’ve responded 2 times now okay🥺 hope you can sleep now
The butt hurt guy (ironically) who creates a post like this not having any self awareness to realize they are more like Naseem than their brain cells can handle, I almost feel bad
Ouch!!! You hit me with such an original response!!! It’s not like this take wasn’t said a million times 😭. And awhhh you feel bad for me??? Thanks man. I’m arguing with queers from around the globe, it does get tiring. Thanks bestie 🫶🏽
My bad, I had to repeat it because I thought you had some reading comprehension issues. You mentioned on another comment that you didn’t read it because 2 paragraphs was too long for your dumbass.
Nah it’s just, you queers all say the same things in your responses. Why waste my time ya know?
I’m sure Allah is very happy with you right now
.
Sounds like a bit of casual homophobia, eh?
My homophobia is anything but casual
Then no answer will make sense to you. People be gay, and so is his uncle. Get over it cause everybody else loved the twist.
Lmfaoooo exactly it’s called an OPINION, you don’t have to agree bud. Btw I bet when you typed up That last sentence you crossed your arms like you did something LMAOOOOOOOOO
Bro did you see your post? You asked the question and here's the answer, you're a homophobe. Funny part is that YOU answered it hahaha
LMFAOOO you did it again!! Pressed 😭
The thought of you seething about gay folk enough to come complain here is hilarious to me lol🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
Oh no not the rainbows!!!! Please!!! I just ate! Your “pride” gives me bubble guts!
.
care to explain why you have such a problem with the uncle being gay?
Because
because what?
Because yuck
yeah I saw that you admitted to being a homophobe already. you’re a trash person with trash beliefs and a shit moral system. not much we can do about that.
LMFAOOO pat yourself on the back please, or get whoever back doors you to do it.
.
I think you just don’t like that he’s gay. Get over it.
Omg I really needed to hear that, thx sis! 😂
Cool, did you get over it? And not your sis, thx! 😁
Just trying to relate to you queers, I assume your a they/that. How do you guys say sis? ?”This”?

Hey fellow Redditors and students,
Navigating the maze of essay writing services can be quite daunting, especially when you’re juggling deadlines and trying to maintain your GPA. Today, I'm here to share my personal experiences with two popular services that have been lifesavers during my academic journey.

2024.05.14 07:42 iz0ble from a family of nine and no one is normal

i’m endlessly jealous of my peers who are lucky enough to have minimal familial problems. i can’t even imagine what that life must be like. i am the second youngest of seven kids at seventeen years old. practically every member of my family is exhausting in their own way. of my brothers, one has a history of addiction that has traumatized me and my siblings from a young age and continues to strain the family. another brother is nearly thirty and living at home. he has fallen into the incel right wing lifestyle and has the most insane bigoted opinions (straight up nazi shit) that he constantly shoves in my face. the third brother has gone no contact with the family due to this hellhole and i honestly can’t say i blame him. of my sisters, the eldest has gone into christian fundamentalism and has convinced my mom to force me into church. my younger sister has extreme behavioural issues and seriously screams on a daily basis, has broken my mom’s nose, and throws knives at people. on top of all that, my father is a narcissistic abusive asshole who is extremely neglectful. beyond family stuff, i have never had an ounce of stability my entire life. throughout my k-12 education i’ve attended six schools and moved three times. even now i’m in a weird spot where i don’t have a place to truly call home. this is all an EXTREME simplification and i could honestly write an essay about each point individually. i just wish this wasn’t my life

2024.05.14 07:14 ScholarGrade Juniors - NOW is the time to start brainstorming essays

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:
I have a free introspection worksheet with over 100 questions like this designed to help you find ideas worth exploring in your essays. You can find it on the A2C Discord or download it directly here.

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:
  1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
  2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
  3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

2024.05.14 07:11 einstein_ios Remembering BIRTH MOVIES DEATH

Been seeing some posts about the history of Geek film critic sites. And while that whole history is littered with awfulness and mean-spiritedness, I wanna show some love to a site that opened my eyes to all cinema can be, beyond Mainstream / arthouse fair.
Birth Movies Death persisted beyond the Faraci outing with the talented contributors below being the real forces behind that site’s success:
Phil Noble Jr. Evan Saathoff Film.Crit.Hulk Meredith Borders Todd Gilchrist Jacob Knight Scott Wampler Britt Hayes Brian Collins Priscilla Page
And a host other writers I’ve followed and loved.
I know the site is known for Faraci and the negative press that followed him, but much of what I loved about that site was ppl caping for exploitation cinema, putting me on to little genre flix I’d never considered, and of course, introducing me to some of my favorite film writers to this day.
Thanks to that site I learned who Lukas Moodyson was beyond being the WE ARE THE BEST! Guy.
For as robust a film culture and convos are online now, it’s extremely rare to find something so dedicated to driving ppl to little known / somewhat disregarded stuff. (I feel similarly about the decline of HIP HOP BLOGS too and how they’ve gone away to leave mainstream sites to be the arbiters of what is at its best as a subculture)
I’ve seen critics who I love bemoan the way the field has been flooded with glorified cheerleaders who wouldn’t dare say something inflammatory from fear of losing their access—
But I see a lot less public sadness over losing places like BMD. Which currated and pushed ppl towards work they thought valuable.
Sites like LETTERBOXD have basically replaced places like BMD. Some of the best writing on obscure indie cinema can be found there, but if you’re not already looking it’s easy to miss. I miss places like this that drive me towards the obscure artifacts that impacted the big Mainstream products we love.
A place where I can find a rich essay on the brilliance of ALIEN: COVENANT and its many influences but also a recommendation of an obscure 80s thriller or an in depth interview with the WACHOWSKIS, and so on…
I’d have never known Riz Ahmed had a film career prior to NIGHTCRAWLER if not for this Site (FOUR LIONS ftw!)
Stuff like that is missed. Fortunately many of these folx have Letterboxd accounts and still post about the kind of stuff that Are that site so special. Many also have podcasts as well (shoutout Scott Wamplers great KING CAST podcast).
At least these things have a way of sticking around in some form.

2024.05.14 06:24 dissemblers TOS update - Claude’s going to be even more restrictive

TOS news: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/aup (edit to point out: "The updates will be effective on June 6, 2024.")
(Edit: also should point out that this isn’t necessarily model refusals; it’s worse! They say they’re going to add automatic detection of violations - which presumably means bans, even if the model allowed the prompt. And given the abysmal customer service for the auto-ban issue, good luck ever getting unbanned with a reasoned argument. And, oh yeah, creating a new account afterwards is also against the TOS.)
Some stuff that’s very open to interpretation or just outright dumb.
Like you can’t say anything that can be construed as shaming. Want to write some facts about the well-documented health risks of obesity? You’d be violating the “body shaming” rule.
You can’t create anything that could be considered “emotionally harmful.” Overly broad and completely subjective.
Same with its prohibitions on misinformation. You can say things that are true and still be in violation for being “misleading.” And the chances of the arbiter of what’s “misleading” being neutral and unbiased? Zero.
Then there’s this gem: you can’t “Promote or advocate for a particular political candidate, party, issue or position.” Want to write a persuasive essay about an issue that can be construed as political? (Which can be just about any issue under the sun.) Better not use Claude.
Also, no depictions of sex. At all. Doesn’t matter the literary value, if it’s graphic or not, etc. Totally prohibited.

2024.05.14 04:44 NicoletteClem Angry patient found my email

I had a patient on my unit a month ago where I work as a charge nurse. High anxiety, borderline delusional, asking for clinically inappropriate interventions. She seems to have an obsession with hating me as we had some interaction (appropriate and professional) when I was charging while she was on the unit. Things like me telling her she couldn’t walk off the unit with her tele/IV pole to go o the ER to have a doctor look at her stubbed toe, which she was requesting an orthopedic surgeon for. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. She of course left a 3 page essay in her Press Ganey survey about how awful our unit is and I am and messaged the president of our hospital on his personal Facebook about it.
A month later and she isn’t letting it go. Now she somehow found my personal email and sent me a long email about how I’m a terrible nurse. Has anyone had an experience like this? What should I be expecting from my leadership about this? And how the heck would she have gotten my personal email?

2024.05.14 04:07 hearmymotoredheart A thoughtful review of the original Edinburgh show to add to the current discourse

https://exeuntmagazine.com/reviews/edinburgh-fringe-review-baby-reindeer-richard-gadd/
Excerpt: "So Baby Reindeer is genuinely exposing – personally revealing about events that some part of Gadd wants to keep – has until now kept – private. But here’s the thing that is doubly interesting: it’s not just the embarrassment of being stalked and Gadd’s feelings of humiliation, his lack of control. Or even the violation entailed in being stalked, the intrusion into Gadd’s private life by ‘Martha’ – although Gadd explores all of these. It’s also that he chooses to tell a version of events that looks sharply away from Kennard’s ‘best possible light’, and instead headlong into a light so exposing that it can be hard to look at.
Don’t get me wrong, there is no doubt in the narrative that Gadd is a victim, nothing to excuse – or to ‘even the odds’ with – ‘Martha’. But there are actions, thoughts, moments that are nonetheless hideously unflattering: his own obsession with ‘Martha’; his own complicity in their initial relationship; his own willingness to pull on all the wrong emotional levers, despite recognising Martha’s mental instability from the beginning; his own manipulation of her fantasies; his own – recurring – aggressive behaviour towards her. Gadd depicts an autobiographical ‘I’ who is often irresponsible, sometimes actively cruel.
Gadd’s exposure is obscene, a word of contested but pertinent etymology for what Gadd is doing. Some linguists claim ‘obscene’ comes from Ancient Greek theatre, meaning ‘out-of-scene’ or ‘off-stage’: some things are too taboo, too troubling to show. Ironically, though, it is their ‘off-stage’-ness that perpetuates this taboo; once on-stage, they lose their potency, no longer, the argument goes, technically ‘obscene’. Lawrence Scott, for example, makes such a case in his recent book Picnic Comma Lightning, using it to help map the changing norms of conduct and acceptability in, among other things, the Trump presidency. But the obscene nature of Baby Reindeer would seem to disagree with Scott’s claim. In exposing his own worst behaviour, Gadd does not neutralise it. Not a bit. The opposite is true: it felt to me off-the-scale acidic, all the more obscene where we could see it."

2024.05.14 03:26 DiplexTerror80 My Essay About the 4th Dimension

I was bored. So what do I do? I write an essay about the 4th dimension.
[Another Dimension]()
One of the questions asked most by mathematicians is that of a higher dimension, along with phi’s common appearance in nature and the parallel postulate. What does a higher dimension mean? Let me start with an easier perspective. To a first-dimensional being, a second dimension is made up of an infinite number of first-dimensional objects. In short, a second dimension adds a direction – width. [When we go from the second dimension to the third dimension, we add another dimension – height.]()
Judging from the earlier dimensions, a fourth dimension simply means a fourth direction. You may also have heard the length, width, and height of an object called dimensions. Now, you know why. This fourth dimension cannot be processed by our three-dimensional minds, just like a second dimensional being cannot process a three-dimensional world, as it only sees in one dimension.
[This brings us to my next point – We only actually see in two dimensions.]() In the book Flatland, the main character, A Square, is brought into the third dimension and looks at Flatland from above, seeing everything from inside prison cells to the Flatlanders’ insides. Using this logic, four-dimensional beings will see a complete three-dimensional world and will look at the third dimension just like us looking at the second dimension; they will be able to see everything.
It is also worthwhile to note that an intersection between two-dimensional objects would not be intersected in the third dimension, as with that of the Klein bottle. The Klein bottle is intersected in its three-dimensional interpretation but is a four-dimensional object not intersected onto itself.
I believe that looking at the fifth dimension will not look any different than the fourth dimension, based on what happens if a one-dimensional being sees the third dimension. Speaking of which, you may also be asking, “Isn’t the [fourth dimension]() time?” Well, there are spatial dimensions and temporal dimensions. Temporal dimensions are remarkably interesting in their own way, and they deserve their own separate article.
I also realized that since every dimension has a dimensional plane, and that by definition, a dimensional plane is infinite, a zero-dimensional plane is not possible. However, there also must be a plane for a zero-dimensional dot to exist on. I have done some research on this zero-dimensional geometry, and it is quite interesting. It is also called a nil-dimensional space. There are even theories that the universe is a zero-dimensional matrix full of zero-dimensional energy.
After some more research, I found that in the zeroth dimension, every position can be described as a point. I found this to be like the hyperbolic plane, which is an infinite plane in a finite space. It does this because it gets smaller and curves as it gets closer to its edge. You may hear a hyperbolic plane described as a saddle, but it is more like saddles stacked upon each other. I highly recommend that you check this out on your own, along with the rest of non-Euclidean geometry.
I would also like to mention the connection between different dimensions and string theory. In string theory, there are multiple universes, each with a different amount of dark energy and a different number of dimensions. Some of these universes will self-destruct because of the dark energy, but it is interesting to think that there might be higher-dimensional universes that could hypothetically exist somewhere out there.
We cannot understand higher dimensions, but we also cannot even understand the simplest of dimensions, zero dimensions. This just shows how much farther humanity can still go. We are still yet to discover many of the secrets our universe holds.

2024.05.14 03:25 shaneka69 SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS NUMEROLOGY DECODE

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS NUMEROLOGY DECODE

Since we all know exactly who and what Spongebob is, I am going to do a Numerology decode.
When it comes to Numerology, there are many different things you can look into. I am going to look into the letters, patterns, and Numerology personality numbers.
SPONGEBOB has a personality #6. 6 is the number of compassion, work ethic, criticism, cleanliness, and productivity. In the funny show, we see that Spongebob is a workaholic. He has a 5 destiny number which shapes who you are overall. 5 is connected to youthfulness which explains the silliness of the Spongebob character. He is always laughing and doing things funny. The 5 energy indicates this. 5 also points to people, places, and things that are unique. He has an 8 soul urge which explains his undying ambition and creativity.
We can see that SPONGEBOB has 2 O's which has the numeric energy of 15 and numeric value of 6. 15 is the creative use of energy for productivity. Again, 6 is the number of routine, work ethic and productivity goes with this. This energy is not only his personality number, but also it is within his name. It's really in him.
SPONGEBOB HAS DOUBLE NUMERIC VALUES IN HIS NAME WHICH ARE, 7,6,5, AND 2. This explains why he is able to show his emotions and have moments of sensitivity(2). Very compassionate(2) but also childish and silly(5) and able to come up with plans that work(7). Since these #s has double influence, we must considered what they equal. 7 twice equals 14/5 which shows how he is responsible and can make work fun even though it is a duty(6). 6 twice equals 12/3 which shows his social skills, life, and creativity. Another youthful energy as well. 5 twice equals 10/1 which points to his bravery and capability to take action. 2 twice equals 4 which is home, family, responsibility, and structure on the home front and he would make everyone feel comfortable for the most part.

2024.05.14 03:06 terdaltaccount Why the ALF actually HELPS the technological system.

Many people on the previous post regarding the ALF espoused approval for it, which is understandable. Who wouldn’t detest the deplorable cruelty inflicted on animals by the system? However what people don’t realize is that what the ALF does is actually help the system. Sure, they may end up ending animal testing, somehow, but would it be a big win? No. Human freedom, human dignity, human nature, and wild nature would still be under attack. Furthermore, their efforts would actually HELP the industrial-technological system.
This is for a few reasons. The first reason is that industrial meat production is far less efficient than agricultural food production. So if everyone somehow became a vegan, the human population could increase and become much higher than it is now, thus worsening our effects on the planet’s natural systems. The second reason is that the activists take pressure off of the system for encouraging change to a more plant based diet. The radicals support radical change, people become mad at the activists instead of the system, so the system can trail safely behind in changes. This is the system’s neatest trick. For more information and elaboration, you can read it on my profile. Ted K wrote an essay with that title. The third reason is the most unfortunate, and it’s that the ALF uses up valuable revolutionary people and fever, but does solve the ultimate problem. Potential revolutionaries go to groups like the ALF wanting to fight the system and fight for a noble cause, but when their work is said and done the system still remains. The ultimate issue people, is not animal cruelty, sweatshops, genocide, war, discrimination, or anything like that, it’s the technology problem.

2024.05.14 02:15 Existing-Eye7948 What would you do?Plagiarized final exam

First year teaching high school, so I’d love some input:
My students started final exams this week. I thought I would be nice and give them a simple reflection essay as their final, since I’m “just an elective class” and I know they’re swamped studying for their other classes. All they had to do was tell me 3 things they learned in my course, and how they would apply those concepts moving forward in life.
The VERY FIRST exam I graded was from a senior, who copied an entire article she found on google onto her paper… keep in mind all chromebooks have been collected by the district, so it wasn’t even a copy and paste, she hand wrote every single sentence, word for word… couldn’t even put in the effort to add her own sentence or switch out higher level words for terms we used in class! Also, at some point she obviously got distracted because she wrote the same sentence 3 times in a row… clearly didn’t proof read before turning in either.
I’m both annoyed at the absolutely laziness, and insulted that she thinks I’m so stupid I wouldn’t notice. My first instinct is to give her a 0 and essentially tell her “Sorry, enjoy summer school and walking the stage late” especially since she has shown this level of laziness the entire semester.
My principal says it’s up to me if I give her a 0 as her exam grade or if I let her retake it. So, seasoned teachers… what would you do?

https://planckstorytime.wordpress.com/ Hello! This is an essay analyzing the themes of FF7 Rebirth through a psychoanalytic lens, while also critiquing the execution of the game's writing. Moreover, it's a personal reflection on my journey with the game, and the complicated feelings that got tangled up with that. Please give it a read if you have the chance.

Hoo boy.
It’s been a long four years since Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) released, and I don’t think I have ever before devoted so much emotional energy to deciphering how I truly feel about a piece of media. Initially, I enjoyed my return to a reimagined world of lovable characters, but unfavorable writing choices and a mind-boggling finale left me feeling torn. Despite striving to maintain an optimistic outlook at the end of my previous essay, my perspective on the game only darkened as the years wore on. Developer interviews constantly oscillated back and forth as to whether they would remain faithful to the original FF7 (1997), or, as the ending of Remake indicated, strike out on a brand new “unknown journey.” That’s not to mention the downright radioactive discourse among fans, combined with the litany of harassing messages I received for the most tepid criticisms.
Eventually, I grew to despise Remake. The positive emotions and ecstatic love I had for parts of the game sunk beneath my waves of ire toward its creative divergences – as well as what they represented to me. And I fed that hate. I hated its ponderous navel-gazing about the nature of adaptations. I hated its self-congratulatory insinuation that asinine story decisions like the “Baby’s-First-Metacommentary” Whispers and the resurrection of multiple deceased characters somehow constituted “bold” storytelling. I hated the uncritical portion of certain audiences that fell for this illusion of transgressive storytelling, all the while embracing a game that went out of its way to barrage the player with fanservice and puerile pandering. I hated the frequent argumentation that “it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel” was somehow seen as a mitigating factor, when it actually further aggravated my problems with it. I hated Remake’s emphasis on novelty, its subversion without meaning, its arrogant alienation of new audiences that wanted to experience a classic story, and its implicitly cynical view on thousands of years of storytelling tradition for the sake of “surprise.” To quote director Naoki Hamaguchi:
“When you try to remake a game and make it an entertaining game, having the exact storyline as the original would lack the excitement and surprise. I was looking for an essence to add to the story, and Zack was chosen to be this essence because in the original, there wasn’t much story about Zack, but in Crisis Core, he had a huge character development.”
But that lonely ember of hope persisted; after all, I had loved Remake at one point. I hated that stubborn attachment most of all. By the time Rebirth was fully unveiled, I wanted only one thing from it: to repulse me to my core, to be something so egregiously offensive to my sensibilities that I could never associate the project with anything positive again. “Perhaps if things get stupid enough,” I thought, “others will also see the emperor’s nakedness.” Pain and despair morphed into objects of desire for me. They were my keys to escaping these contradictory feelings of love and hate.
As you can see, I am quite well-adjusted and able to engage with art in a healthy way.

2024.05.14 00:05 Wise-Version-4415 Cycle Recap - PI oriented KJD - HLS ‘27!

Hi everyone! I’m posting a somewhat belated cycle recap after a long spring semester. :)
Thank you so much to everyone who has given me support and advice! I wanted to post a cycle recap to offer help to other applicants and flag a few details about my cycle that I thought might be useful to know.
Linking my LSD here: https://www.lsd.law/users/creep/scoopfan24
Stats: 3.97, 177. KJD, nURM.
Some notes: - I am extremely PI oriented, so I was looking for PI placement + clinic + other practice availability in my specific field (HLS’s SPOs were very appealing to me) and did a lot of LRAP research. - I withdrew from schools as soon as I knew I wouldn’t attend: withdrew from NU, UVA, Mich in Jan after my HLS and SLS acceptances and withdrew from Columbia after receiving a hold in March. Similarly, I didn’t apply for merit aid at GULC because I knew I wouldn’t attend by the time the form came out and I didn’t want to take money from committed applicants. - I was a finalist for RTK at NYU, but ultimately didn’t make the cut. I withdrew before receiving a regular merit offer so I don’t know what they would have given me. - I retook a 174 because it was an underperformance based on my PTs and as a KJD applicant I wanted to be above medians/75ths. So, for those on here saying retaking a 174 is a death knell to an applicant, it’s not. Though I will say it could definitely have hurt me at Mich/NU/UVA. - As people who have seen my past flairs will know, I’m “wasian.” Please don’t believe dogwhistles and fearmongering on here about wasians/Asians/white people getting discriminated against. Anyone can be a well rounded applicant with an interesting story who can contribute to a community and be very successful in law school admissions—and we should all celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow applicants.
I’m going to submit my materials to the new Google Folder project; hopefully others can find them helpful later on! I have been writing for years and think it’s one of the most important skills you can have when applying. I am available in Reddit DMs if anyone wants any essay-writing advice, LSAT advice, edits, etc. I love to help! Please feel free to reach out and ask any questions about my application and decision processes.

2024.05.13 23:40 ViewAshamed2689 Stop saying Taylor has BPD

i’m editing this to add a DISCLAIMER because nobody is understanding what i’m saying — i am not defending Taylor. talk shit about her as much as you want, but don’t flippantly throw complex diagnoses around based on stereotypes. it will never reach Taylor, it only damages real life people who suffer from mental illness
this page is really entertaining but can we stop w the armchair diagnosing taylor with bpd and saying she has ~cluster B traits~ in all of her music? comments like this are just damaging to the people who actually have mental health issues, ESPECIALLY bpd which is one of the most stigmatized mental illnesses ever
sure taylor adopts traits of the people she spends the most time with, but everyone does that to some degree. i get that the whole Kennedy situation was strange but i also think a lot of that was branding + creating an aesthetic for her transition to pop music (red was released literally the same month they broke up which i don’t think was a coincidence lol). having identity issues is not exclusive to bpd and it makes sense for her considering the lifestyle she was raised in. especially when her “eras” are so defined by her aesthetic at the time.
i know her lyrics are autobiographical but please remember these songs aren’t about one person or one situation every single time. obviously a lot of her music probably pulls inspiration from several different sources in her life and they’re all put together in one song to tell a story that the masses can relate to. someone said that they think all of the suicide, mental health themes in ttpd could be her being Matty’s chameleon, and having a new aesthetic of struggle. i could definitely see that. i think it is more strategic than it is personal.
i’m not trying to be a taylor swift warrior defender but the diagnosing her with mental illnesses is not what this page is for and it’s also massively Weird. and detrimental to real life people struggling with mental illness. can u just talk shit about other things instead please
