2024.05.15 01:00 livia2lima Day 8 - The infamous "grep" and other text processors

INTRO

Your server is now running two services: the sshd (Secure Shell Daemon) service that you use to login; and the Apache2 web server. Both of these services are generating logs as you and others access your server - and these are text files which we can analyse using some simple tools.
Plain text files are a key part of "the Unix way" and there are many small "tools" to allow you to easily edit, sort, search and otherwise manipulate them. Today we’ll use grep, cat, more, less, cut, awk and tail to slice and dice your logs.
The grep command is famous for being extremely powerful and handy, but also because its "nerdy" name is typical of Unix/Linux conventions.

YOUR TASKS TODAY

The output of any command can be "redirected" to a file with the ">" operator. The command: ls -ltr > listing.txt wouldn't list the directory contents to your screen, but instead redirect into the file "listing.txt" (creating that file if it didn't exist, or overwriting the contents if it did).

WHERE'S MY /VALOG/AUTH.LOG?

If you didn't find the file /valog/auth.log you're probably using a minimal version of Ubuntu (it can be your own local VM or a version in one of the VPS). That minimal image is, well... minimal. It only has the systemd journal available and it didn't come with the old syslog system by default.
But don't worry! To get that back, sudo apt install rsyslog and the file will be created. Just give it a few minutes to populate before working on the lesson.
It also be missing a few of the other programs we use in the challenge, but you can always install them.

POSTING YOUR PROGRESS

Re-run the command to list all the IP's that have unsuccessfully tried to login to your server as root - but this time, use the the ">" operator to redirect it to the file: ~/attackers.txt. You might like to share and compare with others doing the course how heavily you're "under attack"!

2024.05.15 00:55 lincolngoldfinch1 How Immigration Laws Differ At The National And State Levels

How Immigration Laws Differ At The National And State Levels
There are many different immigration laws in the United States. The federal government enforces U.S. immigration laws at the national level. However, states have some authority to create rules for certain state activities related to immigration.
For example, states can pass laws related to employment, education, licensing, and state benefits for immigrants. This article will give you a general overview of U.S. immigration laws and discuss how they differ from state to state. This article focuses explicitly on Texas state immigration laws and provides examples of how they vary from other states.

Overview Of The U.S. Immigration System

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is the main body of immigration law in the United States. The INA is a large and complex set of rules that governs everything from who can enter the United States to how immigrants can become citizens.
The INA has many different sections, each with its purpose. Some areas of the INA deal with temporary immigration, such as tourist or student visas. Other sections deal with permanent immigration, such as employment-based or family-based green cards. There are also sections of the INA that deal with naturalization, the process by which immigrants can become U.S. citizens.
The U.S. immigration system is primarily federal, meaning that the US Congress has the power to pass immigration laws, and the President can enforce those laws. However, states also have some authority to regulate immigration within their borders.
For example, states can pass laws related to employment, education, licensing, and state benefits for immigrants. States cannot pass laws that conflict with federal immigration law or that would make it more difficult for immigrants to comply with federal immigration law.

Texas State Immigration Laws

Texas has several state immigration laws that are different from other states. Here are five immigration policies only implemented in the State of Texas.
The E-Verify System
First, Texas requires all employers to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm the immigration status of their employees. The E-Verify system is an online database that allows employers to enter their employees' information to ensure they are authorized to work in the United States.
The Sanctuary Cities Ban
Second, Texas has a ban on so-called "sanctuary cities." A sanctuary city is a city that has policies in place to protect undocumented immigrants from being deported. For example, some sanctuary cities have laws that prevent police from asking people about their immigration status.
Driver’s License For Undocumented Immigrants
Third, Texas does not allow undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. In most states, undocumented immigrants can get driver's licenses if they meet all the other requirements for obtaining a license (such as passing a driving test).
These are examples of how Texas immigration laws differ from others. For more information about immigration laws in Texas or any other state, you should contact an immigration lawyer.

The Lincoln-Goldfinch Law Firm

Texas is not the only state with specific immigration laws. There are many other states with different immigration policies. Some states have more lenient laws toward undocumented immigrants, while others have more strict regulations.
It is essential to know the immigration laws of the state you live in so that you can comply with them. If you have any questions about immigration laws, you should consult an immigration lawyer. An immigration lawyer can help you understand immigration laws and how they apply to your situation.
If you need help understanding the immigration laws of Texas or any other state, contact The Lincoln-Goldfinch Law Firm today. They are a boutique immigration law firm located in Central Texas that handles many different types of immigration cases. 2024.05.15 00:51 DeatonationgGrenade Side/main character additions for my book Anastasius!

Hello everyone! I’m running something for my book that I’m sure you’ll enjoy! I’m writing a book titled Anastasius which is Greek for Renewal. But I was thinking of a fun way to raise money for the book and a fun way to interact with potential readers! So I was thinking, if I give the characters who will be in my book, perhaps there could be a fundraiser for this! It will be $10 USD per character and there is no limit to how many characters you’d like! I’ll post the sheet for each character and you can pick and choose which tribe you’d like create your own character! If you have anymore questions I’ll be happy to answer! I take payments through PayPal as it’s the only thing I understand how to use!
Creatures of Renewal:
As written by Wyvern Scholars
Amphiptere:
Amphipteres generally were said to have light-colored feathers like a sunrise, a serpentine body, bat-like wings with feathers covering most of the forearm and often greenish in coloration, and a long tail much like a wyvern's tail. Others are described as covered in feathers with a spiked tail, bird-like wings, and a beak-like snout.
These small dragons are known to go after smaller prey like rodents and birds, as their habitatsavanna's heat, leavingrests. However, large colonies have been known to live in constructed settlements. Still, any knowledge of a leader has yet to be discovered. It has been rumored that the Amphiptere changes leaders when either the current one dies or willingly gives up the position of tribal leader.
Habitat: Forests, Jungles, or the forested remnants of human cities.
Arctic Dragon:
These giant, wooly dragons stand five feet taller than the most significant polar bears; their powerful muscles and jet-black skin under their blueish-white fur dominate most northern regions. Human settlements are where they prowl, waiting for humans hidden in these desolate territories for the perfect time to strike. These areas are far too cold for most dragons. Still, the Arctic dragon has adapted to survive in these brutal conditions. However, females only move southwards when their young are ready to be born. Once the younglings are old enough to walk short distances independently, the mother and cub begin trekking back toward the tundra.
Diet: These dragons hunt down various arctic prey, ranging from the smallest Arctic hares to the giant whales. Anything these dragons can get their talons on is food to them. Although young Arctic dragons do not have the speed or endurance their parents have, they rely on their parents to bring them back something they can eat.
Coatyl: The most noticeable feature of Coatyls is the feathered wings. These wings comprise a humerus connected to a radius and an ulna connected to metacarpals. The wings of a Coatyl allow it to fly, which is the primary method of locomotion. In unbonded Coatyls, the scapulars and front feathers are dark green, the covert feathers are light yellow or tan, and the primary and secondary flight feathers are red. Coatyls have pressurized sacs in the back of the mouth of a highly volatile and slightly acidic chemical known as coatalic acid. When threatened, muscles surrounding these sacs contract, pushing the coatalic acid out of small holes in the mouth and spraying it. When it comes into contact with air, coatalic acid undergoes a chemical reaction that causes it to ignite and become highly adhesive, sticking to whatever it lands on.
Diet: Coatyls primarily prey on small rodents like mice or rats. Coatyls cannot bite or tear their food to pieces, so they instead swallow their prey whole. They can do this as the upper and lower jaws of a Coatyl are not rigidly attached and have multiple joints, allowing them to open their mouths wide enough to swallow prey whole. While digesting food, Coatyls will typically avoid trying to fly and will instead travel along the ground.
Habitat: These dragons are usually found in the same territories as the Amphiptere. However, these Coatyls have been seen further south in the rainforests due to being more of a tropical species. Their size makes them easy prey for larger animals if they are not careful.
Dragon:
The Western European kind, with four legs, two wings, and (usually) fiery breath. Depending on how the work classifies things, these may be the only ones called "dragons." Otherwise, they're typically called authentic, Western, or European dragons. The Western dragon tends to be massive and heavy, with sharp claws and bat-like wings. They are usually with reptile features but may also have fur or feathers. Sometimes dark colored but always shiny. Some have forked tongues, others crests, fringes, or some other adornment. It always has the ability to spew forth blazing fire and fumes. In the West, dragons live in caves or mountain dwellers and predators. Cave dweller dragons stay in the coldness of the dark most of the time. The caves, filled with fire and water, are easily guarded and located close to towns, where food is convenient. Mountain predators live in cave-riddled mountains that provide an invincible tower and protection.
Diet: Western dragons tend to be considered carnivores. They like meat, flesh, and blood as their primary food source and are too fussy about the source. Sheep, cows, oxen, lions, elephants, or even humans, anything of a reasonable size and with warm blood and flesh to feast on, are their primary food sources. However, dragons haven’t shown a preference for the age or gender of humans. One interesting thing to note is that although they eat the flesh, they have a particular taste for blood. Sometimes, when in need of a quick burst of energy, they will only drink the blood of their prey and leave the flesh. This is seen as barbaric by most other species of dragons. Still, with western dragons being the second largest species, we tend not to mess with them and their dietary habits.
Drake: The drake is a dragon with four limbs, much like a lizard, although usually far more significant in size than the average lizard. A potent example of a drake in the natural world is the Komodo Dragon, a large species of minotaur lizard in Indonesia. These creatures have low-slung bodies, like crocodiles and alligators, with bellies across the ground. However, due to their natural habitat and human greed, wild drakes have been increasingly difficult to get notes from and other scholars to talk with. Drakes who are found are highly hostile and not open much to talking, but with enough food and gold, these dragons could easily talk your ear off.
Diet: These family-oriented dragons hunt together in packs; their size and numbers are easily strong enough to take down small herds of water buffalo, wildebeests, elk, and moose.
Feydragons: These dragons are about the size of a cat, each having an iridescent coat of scales that reflected all colors of the rainbow, predominantly reflecting one particular color, which changed with age. They had a long, prehensile tail and platinum-colored, butterfly-like wings. Like true dragons, faerie dragons grew stronger with age but matured much more quickly and lived shorter lives. Because their predominant scale hue ran the colors of the rainbow over their lifetime, their color directly indicated their age and power. The scales of a young hatchling were almost always red, and those of a fully mature dragon (over 50 years old) were violet. Most dragons leave these small ones alone because it is not worth expending calories to catch these little critters. But these small dragons are known across the globe for their beautiful woven tapestries and the symphonies they create with their wings.
Diet: Their diet mainly consists of small bugs caught in the air, from trees and bushes, and off the ground. They also fed on fruits, berries, nectar, and butterflies, which they ate to get the color and look of their wings.
Sea Orc: A Sea Orc has no arms or legs. It sports fins on the top portion and every few meters across its body, including one long fin that runs from the bottom of its head to its tail. A Sea Orc has little in the way of bones; it slithers through the waters like a snake. This assists the Sea Orc in attacking its prey. Sea Orc eggs cannot be fertilized in deep water, and smaller Sea Orcs cannot survive the pressure. Adult Sea Orcs have to head to shallower waters to mate. It is believed that the Sea Orc typically goes to warmer climates for mating.
Female Sea Orcs lay their eggs at the shoreline, close enough to the surface to be safe from the environmental killers but far enough from the water line that the parents can still protect their offspring. The eggs will grow for several months and will be born after size months.
Diet: These massive beasts eat mostly fish and aquatic life, anything they can catch; on rare occasions, they will eat a dragon, but that only happens when a rowdy juvenile dragon decides to go after a Sea Orcs calf.
Wyvern: The Wyvern is about the same size as the Arctic dragon, though in weight, they are closer to their brother, the Drake. The Wyvern is a two-legged dragon with two wings. They are believed to be faster than the more enormous Dragon. Their head is large and round, and they have a more petite mouth than most dragons. The body is thick but with a soft underbelly. The tail of the Wyvern is the most deadly. It is long serpentlike with a large mass at the end. They can also have a load of spikes within the ball or a significant spike at the top. The Wyvern uses this ball as its primary weapon, capable of smashing through most creatures, including other dragon's scales.
For its size, the Wyvern holds a large amount of weight. Most of this weight is within its thick scales. Anyone who has fought a Wyvern will inform you that getting through their body is next to impossible. The scales overlap several times, and underneath them is a thin net of tissue that absorbs impact and is resistant to being cut.
Diet: Moose, Elk, and Caribou are everyday staples of a wyvern diet, although anything that moves fits the wyvern needs as they have to eat at least 400 pounds of food every three days.
Humans: Not much is left from humans after they destroyed themselves; greed took out most of them, and the explosions hurt the rest. Humans have flocked to their caves deep in the ground. Most dragons leave humans alone, but humans have tried to take back their world a few times, but us dragons have quickly stamped out those little uprisings. Although some dragons keep humans as pets, their crafty little grabbers are relatively good at crafting the little things they need. Some dragons keep them for wealth status, and others just eat them for a rare treat.
Prey animals: Not much needs to be said here; anything a dragon can catch and eat is a prey animal.

2024.05.15 00:46 RhubarbOnly6571 I'm loving the FF7 remake and rebirth despite the revised story feeling forced, bloated and cheesy

I want to point out a very real perspective in all of this. experienced artists and creative people, like the ones that created FF7, are not that attached to their creations as the fans are. that is why they are willing to change many things in the story, designs and settings.
The og FF7 was amazing but that was in part because the presentation left a lot to the imagination of the player, the player's mind filled in many gaps in the story and design. the whole game feels like you are playing with toys in a diorama which is great and lovely and works in favor of the game and story but the moment you translate that setting into a realistic one, like in the remake, many moments will end up feeling goofy.
Some vocal fans might not realize or remember how many goofy moments happened in the original game, Heidegger for example slaps soldiers when Rufus disrespects him at Junon. and who would have thought that the creators's version of Biggs, Jesse and Wedge in the remake were so corny right? but those characters were also kind of goofy in the og game but the new versions are quite unremarkable.
Also the story in FF7 advent children was very over the top so I don't get the fans that hate those bombastic moments in the remake, FF in general became very over the top when doing High fidelity projects.
On a side note, design wise, the character designs are gorgeous and they did an outstanding job in modernizing those designs, they did wonders with the clothing, fabrics and the materials while maintaining the og silhouette of the characters very much intact which I thought was masterfully done.
The problem that I see with the disparity and mixed opinions from the fans is that the reimagining of a media product like ff7 is difficult to satisfy for both the creators of the game and the fans alike, the creators have their own vision and want to fulfill their creative ambitions while the fans want "the same thing but better" and they are going to be disapointed when they are playing a reimagining, a re-make of the game.
Having said this I also agree with the hating vocal fans, I would have prefered a straightforward HD version of the OG game but my optimistic self thinks it will happen after the whole reimagining is done.
But I don't think the remake is a selfish/self-serving project solely for the makers of the game, for starters this is a businees for them and I genuinly believe this platinum treatment of the FF7 brand was done for the fans that had made the brand so succesful. I think they are trying to fullfil creative ambitions that makes the team excited to create a modern product that satisfies them and the fans alike, while getting new ones on board.
I came to play the remake with the idea that I'm getting a different experience from the original game, and that mentality has helped me appreciate the game for what it is. The remake is quite fun and I'm having a blast, the system is totally different from the og game but the gameplay of the remake is dynamic and exciting. And the overworld in rebirth is so well done, it definitely required so much work from the developers of the game to design the landscape of a very blank overworld that existed in the og game. In the og game the overworld is just a simplification of the map, for a realistic look in the new games it is a NECESITY to fill ALL that empty space with plenty of detail.
While the gameplay in the remake is super satisfying, tight and exciting, it is not the same for the characters and the story in general, there is a lot of dialogue that feel so unecesary and out of place. The developers are moving mountains in making all that inmense cast of characters interact with each other, like seriously they went above and beyond with trying to come up with ways to make all of these characters interact with each other, that is no easy task. but some of those interactions felt not genuine at all, many reactions and responses are cringe, lame or not human, there were moments I was like, no person speak like this.
Gameplay wise they are even trying their best to make you control different characters throughout the game so you don't stick with the same ones for the whole game, they are constantly switching up the combination so you try out different ones.
A lot of thought and care are being put in the remakes and that should be acknowledged by the fans that were disappointed, but they did dropped the ball with the dialogues and some story changes, straight up trash.
There are valid things to hate and to be disappointed by but I'm just here to point out the things that impressed me and delighted me.
not really a tldr: there is a lot to love and a lot to hate (and cringe) in the remakes, but despite all of this I'm loving these games so much. I'm having a blast playing them. hope they make a straightorward HD version of the og game in the future.

2024.05.15 00:43 zpfgot The Union Organizational Committee and An Open Letter Regarding Unionization to TDC/TPR

Union Organizing Update
Over the past few weeks, several of us from this subreddit have joined together to form an organizing committee for unionization. We have organizers from across the United States, including organizers from Washington, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and more. They are among some of the most frequent posters and helpers that you’re familiar with already, like ( u/mamabroccoli and u/Inevitable_Laugh4569 ). We have already been in contact with a couple unions for guidance, including a union with an office within a couple miles of the TDC main office in New York City. While our numbers are sufficient and I think we’re making great progress thus far, if you are still interested in having an active role, we’d love to have you. The more people helping, the better! If you would prefer a more passive role by simply giving your support, that’s always appreciated too!
We have been discussing our plans for near future of our potential tutor union. Most of the work from here will be contacting people and spreading the word about unionizing the tutor base. We will be providing more information over the next couple/few weeks. Later in the week, there will be a post about the benefits of unionization. Next week, we will post about the demands we’re going to state at the beginning of any negotiations. We have ideas for further informational posts. This is truly a group effort. I think you will like what we’re offering and will be glad to vote to unionize in the future.
The following letter is an open letter to tutor.com / The Princeton Review. You may notice that it is written a bit differently than the writings I usually produce. The reason for the tonal shift is because of writing help. I wrote the initial draft, which was edited by our committee to have a nicer flow, be less antagonistic, and add further pro-union arguments. We are committed to work together, and this is just the start of what we can do when we work together!
Also, if you haven’t yet signed the video petition, please do so. https://www.change.org/p/oppose-tutor-com-mandating-video-sessions-for-tutors?recruiter=300829309&recruited_by_id=b62a6030-fe40-11e4-95d0-ef524b399632&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard_share_modal&utm_medium=copylink
Open letter to tutor.com / The Princeton Review regarding attempts to unionize
Since we're starting the process of putting together a union proposal, we're publicly requesting tutor.com and/or The Princeton Review to voluntarily recognize that we're attempting to organize, and provide the resources necessary to hold a vote. From discussions amongst the committee, we know the main office is aware of this subreddit, and we'd imagine that someone is paying particular attention to our recent discussions about unionizing.
We understand if there's resistance from TDC to seeing their workers unionize, as that's a normal reaction in the business world. However, we urge you to instead be proactive and helpful as we attempt to organize.
We believe a tutor union can work in tutor.com's favor, to a great extent, for a variety of reasons:
* It would be a very good look publicly if you were to openly support the effort to unionize. We're in the education industry, a famously unionized industry, filled with people who will be more sympathetic to companies with unionized workforces. Being the one tutoring company that can truthfully say "We supported our tutors' right to unionize from day 1" could be a major selling point when seeking contracts in this industry.
* From what we've seen from your social media posts, tutor.com does seem to project a degree of progressivism. As an example, you've made posts taking pride in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at tutor.com, and you always try to highlight tutors who receive awards and recognition. You could significantly further this image by taking a union-friendly stance here. You've had executives post about how the tutors are loved - here's your chance to prove it.
* A tutor union would work to infinitely better the company itself. Tutors would feel better compensated and better heard, and as a result feel better and more enthusiastic about the company and their work overall. The better conditions would set tutor.com up as the de facto best online tutoring company to work for, and attract more and better talent to the company. It would be reasonable to set stricter quality standards and, in time, tutor.com would gain a reputation for being *the* premium tutoring service - the tutoring service that has tutors who rise above and beyond those at other services. Retention rates would skyrocket, institutional knowledge would accumulate - we'd become a company of true professionals.
* Were tutor.com to support the unionization process, it would start the relationship between the union and company off with mutual respect, a willingness to cooperate and compromise, and general friendliness and good will. This would ultimately serve us all better than a relationship borne out of malice, a refusal to acknowledge our existence, or open antagonism.
* tutor.com has faced some recent backlash from some right-wing government people regarding where we've ended up through corporate acquisitions, to the point where some are beginning to attack the military contract. One contract has already been lost for this reason. Being seen as a pro-worker company that broke industry norms and went out of their way to support their worker's right to organize, even if the effort ultimately fails, could easily work to gain the company some new allies on the left, shielding it from pointless attacks about its ownership.
We want to be clear that we're not asking for you to come out and endorse a "Yes" vote on unionization - though of course we'd be delighted if you did. What we're asking is for you to provide the resources necessary to hold an informed vote. Let us send out an email to all current US-based tutors with information regarding our efforts, and help us hold a vote to unionize at some point in the future. Offer your support or your neutrality, but please don't openly oppose or ignore our efforts. You've mentioned that "9 out of 10 tutors rate themselves Satisfied or Very Satisfied with Tutor.com" before - let's put that to the test. It may be that we hold a vote, and fail - and then, so long as you maintained neutrality and enabled us to make our case to the other tutors, we'll at least have our mutual good will, and you'll still be the pro-worker company that enabled, rather than hindered, an unsuccessful attempt to organize.
So, tutor.com / The Princeton Review, the ball is in your court now. Our attempt to organize will continue with or without your help, but we believe the best path forward is clearly the one where we work together on this. Doing nothing at all here is the easy choice, but it's also the cowardly choice. Support us, and we'll work together to better this company for its tutors and its students.

2024.05.15 00:41 DarkDirigibleTitan Can I show the drunk an in play Townsfolk?

Two people in my play group both have a copy of the game, and I want to try and abuse the fact that I have access to duplicate tokens for all the Trouble Brewing characters. The group is quite experienced, so I’m sure they can handle whatever I throw at them. So can I, for example, put two undertakers in the bag with the intention of making one of them the drunk? I don’t immediately see any mechanical reason why I can’t do this, since there won’t actually two undertakers in play; there will be one undertaker and the drunk. Nonetheless, this feels borderline illegal, so I’d like some more opinions on this matter.

2024.05.15 00:39 skisice They really have dumbed down this character since release

And the whole game too but Hanzo is a good example of it
He started with scatter arrow and they removed that for spam Hanzo
But he still had 1 shot and now they removed that and now he can only spam
Yet they let moira have auto aim and let kiriko win every 1v1 against any dps. These developers are just retarded or they have a hate boner for skill based characters and just want the casuals to win.

2024.05.15 00:39 JanFromEarth How we can resolve the immigration crisis on the southern border.

Resolving immigration issues at the southern border is complex and requires a multifaceted approach. Here are some key strategies:
  1. Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Implementing comprehensive immigration reform that addresses various aspects of the immigration system, including border security, pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, temporary worker programs, and improvements to legal immigration processes.
  2. Border Security: Investing in technology, personnel, and infrastructure to enhance border security. This includes increasing the number of border patrol agents, deploying advanced surveillance technology, and fortifying physical barriers where necessary.
  3. Address Root Causes: Addressing the root causes of migration from Central American countries, such as poverty, violence, and lack of economic opportunity. This involves diplomatic efforts, foreign aid, and partnerships with regional governments and organizations to improve conditions in sending countries.
  4. Streamlining Asylum Process: Streamlining and strengthening the asylum process to efficiently and fairly adjudicate asylum claims while also deterring fraudulent claims. This may involve increasing resources for asylum officers and immigration judges to reduce backlogs and processing times.
  5. Humanitarian Assistance: Providing humanitarian assistance to migrants, including medical care, food, shelter, and legal support, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and families.
  6. Cooperation with Mexico and Central American Countries: Strengthening cooperation with Mexico and Central American countries to manage migration flows and combat human trafficking and smuggling networks.
  7. Pathways to Legal Status: Creating pathways to legal status for undocumented immigrants already living in the United States, including those who have been contributing to their communities for years.
  8. Workforce Development: Implementing workforce development programs to address labor needs in sectors that rely heavily on immigrant labor, such as agriculture and hospitality, while also protecting the rights of both immigrant and native-born workers.
  9. Enhanced Border Management: Investing in modernizing and enhancing border management systems to facilitate legal trade and travel while maintaining security.
  10. Public Education and Outreach: Conducting public education and outreach campaigns to dispel myths about immigration, promote understanding of immigration laws and policies, and foster empathy and support for migrants.
Ultimately, resolving immigration issues at the southern border requires a balanced approach that prioritizes security, humanitarian concerns, and the rule of law while also recognizing the economic and social benefits of immigration to the United States.
The first thing is to vote out anyone who will not actually address the issue. There are too many politicians who embrace the border issues because they help in reelection. If a politician is not part of the solution, they should be removed.

2024.05.15 00:38 BenocxX Communication between loosely coupled scenes

Communication between loosely coupled scenes
Hello!
I've read the "best practices" section of the Godot Manual. This article got me rethinking how I'm building my scenes: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/best_practices/scene_organization.html#how-to-build-relationships-effectively
TL;DR of the article linked above:
In the guide linked above, they strongly recommend that:
  • Scenes should avoid having dependencies
  • Scenes should keep everything they need within themselves
  • Scenes operate best when they operate alone
  • Favor loose coupling
The main goal is to make reusable scenes that can easily be added to any parent scene without having to adjust them. A parent scene should act as a "controller" (for those comming for an MVC background) and handle how sub-scenes communicate and act.
I want to know how you guys do, since I'm pretty new to Godot. I have a somewhat strong background in webdev (frontend and backend, most of it in C# and TypeScript). I've used Unity for a few weeks and recently switched to Godot. I feel confortable with common design pattern and coding principals/fundamentals.
I'd like to know how you guys build games with reusability in mind. Either composition, inheritence or a mix of both, feel free to share how you do things! It would be preferable if you could explain why you think that doing "x" or "y" is the best way to do it.
I'll start by explaining how I plan on building my scenes with a simple Player scene example, you could use the same example to explain how you do it:
Player (CharacterBody2D) CollisionShape2D Sprite2D InputModule (Node) MovementModule (Node)
In that example, the Player scene should listen for InputModule and tell MovementModule to move when corresponding inputs are registered by the InputModule. Both scene work by themselves, they have no idea about where they are, who's their parent and who are their siblings.
InputModule reads input: -> IsMovementKeyPressed(): bool -> GetMovementDirection(): Vector2D
MovementModule gives velocities: -> Move(Vector2D velocity, Vector2D direction): Vector2D
The player scripts is the one responsible to handle the logic to "combine" the two modules. Here's the code (in C#):
Inside Player.cs script, attached to Player node (parent of InputModule and MovementModule)
This code is reusable because we could easily use the MovementModule to make an enemy AI move, we would simply replace the InputModule with an other module that returns a direction based on the AI behaviour.
Combined with a strong StateMachine, the Player script will be able to order everything accordingly and make each scene work without knowing their context. An enemy script would order everything it's own way and so on, thus making each node a reusable piece of logic that does not impact nor is impacted by the context around it.
Examples of other modules I will had in the near future:
  • HealthModule
  • TargetDectionModule
  • HitBoxModule
  • BuffModule
Modules can also encapsulate more than just logic. For example, the HealthModule would display a health bar filled with the current amount of health. The module would expose fields to control how it behaves (like every built-in nodes do), so a parent could decide if the health bar is shown or hidden, we could also manually configure it in the editor via the inspector.
Thanks everyone for reading this post, I'm looking forward to reading how you're building your games!

2024.05.15 00:38 rosedeveuo Need to know how to proceed after Favorable Decision.

So just a little background into my Social Security Disability journey.
*Put in social security application March 2022 *Denied within like 2-3 months *Appealed and submitted for reconsideration in or around July/August *Anticipated losing my case, so I hired a lawyer (This is where it gets good) *About 4-5 months later reconsideration was denied, Lawyer didn't help much at this point as lawyers can't do much during this period. *KEY FACT(That hurt my case in the end) The lawyer did not disclose to me that if I applied for both programs SSI/SSDI that if the SSA approved me for both programs I would lose any standing backpay or retroactive pay due to "Windfall Offset" *Skip forward> *Lawyer appealed my reconsideration denial and did not explain thoroughly all of the procedures/possible outcomes or any future issues that could arise *Waited about 6 months for a hearing for a judge *Hearing was scheduled Feb 2024. *All doctors notes/ exams/ testimonials/ diagnoses all submitted to the judge (over 100 pages.) *Hearing was held, judge said she would let us know in 30-60 days and to expect mail. *1 month & Two weeks later a decision was made *Called lawyer because portal was on Step 4, and I was told that the lawyer should see the decision *Judge found me fully favorable since March 2022 *Took awhile to get an official award lette payment letter and backpay letter (but no more than 1 month) *Was told I was eligible for backpay up to $22,000 And that the lawyer was getting his cut first *Called back a few weeks later to check on my backpay and when it would deposit. *Was advised I was NOT receiving any of my backpay because of "Windfall offset" since I was eligible for both programs. The backpay cancelled itself out. So only my lawyer got paid.
Now, first things first. Yes I am very pleased and grateful that I was found fully favorable and that the time line was not atrocious as others has been. However, I feel that my lawyer totally neglected to tell me the fact that I possibly wouldn't get backpay if we applied for both programs. He should have known this, and should have informed me before we even went to the hearing stage.
So, moving forward the only way to fix this issue (and free my backpay )is to have the lawyer withdraw my SSI application. I spoke to his assistant and she forwarded my message to him but he doesn't seem like he's motivated to fix his mistake. So I'm hoping that he fixes it before time runs out for me. I have less than 30 days to correct this.
Anyone with past experiences or have any information about how to proceed in this matter, please share your opinions.
Was the lawyer wrong for not telling me this information beforehand ? And How do I go about fixing it without ruffling his feathers?
Thanks in advance to everyone, and good luck out there! Keep fighting and keep your chins up.

2024.05.15 00:37 businessnewstv How to Choose the Best Locations for Your Vending Machines in 2024

Importance of choosing the right locations for vending machines

Choosing the right locations for vending machines is of paramount importance in ensuring the success of your vending business. The location plays a crucial role in determining the visibility and accessibility of your machines, as well as the potential customer base. A well-chosen location can attract a steady flow of customers, increase sales, and maximize profits. On the other hand, a poorly chosen location can result in low foot traffic, limited customer reach, and ultimately, a decline in revenue. Therefore, it is essential to carefully evaluate various factors such as foot traffic, target audience, competition, and proximity to complementary businesses when selecting the best locations for your vending machines. By doing so, you can position your vending machines strategically and optimize your chances of achieving long-term success in the vending industry.

Factors to consider when selecting vending machine locations

When selecting vending machine locations, there are several factors to consider. One important factor is the responsiveness of the website design. A responsive website design ensures that the vending machine is easily accessible and user-friendly for customers. This is crucial in attracting and retaining customers, as a poorly designed website can lead to frustration and deter potential buyers. By investing in a responsive website design, vending machine owners can enhance the overall customer experience and increase the likelihood of successful transactions.

Benefits of strategic placement of vending machines

Strategic placement of vending machines offers numerous benefits for businesses. Firstly, it increases visibility and accessibility, allowing potential customers to easily find and access the products. This can lead to higher sales and revenue. Secondly, strategic placement can target specific customer demographics, such as office buildings or schools, increasing the likelihood of attracting the right target audience. Additionally, vending machines placed in strategic locations can provide convenience to customers, allowing them to satisfy their cravings or purchase essential items without having to travel far. Lastly, strategic placement can also help businesses build brand awareness and loyalty, as customers associate the convenience and accessibility of the vending machines with the brand itself. Overall, the strategic placement of vending machines can greatly enhance a business's profitability and customer satisfaction.

Researching Potential Locations

Identifying high-traffic areas

Identifying high-traffic areas is crucial when choosing the best locations for your vending machines. These areas are characterized by a constant flow of people, ensuring a steady stream of potential customers for your business. One key factor to consider when identifying high-traffic areas is the proximity to healthcare facilities. With the healthcare staffing business launch in a few weeks, it is essential to target locations near hospitals, clinics, and medical centers. This strategic placement will allow healthcare professionals and patients to conveniently access your vending machines, providing them with quick and convenient refreshments during their busy schedules. By catering to the needs of healthcare professionals and patients, your vending machines can become a valuable resource in these high-traffic areas.

Analyzing target demographics

Analyzing target demographics is a crucial step in choosing the best locations for your vending machines. By understanding the characteristics and preferences of your potential customers, you can strategically place your machines in areas where they are most likely to generate high sales. This analysis involves gathering data on factors such as age, gender, income level, and lifestyle choices. By considering these demographic factors, you can tailor your product offerings and marketing strategies to effectively meet the needs and desires of your target audience. Additionally, analyzing target demographics allows you to identify untapped market segments and explore new opportunities for expansion. Overall, a thorough analysis of target demographics is essential for making informed decisions and maximizing the profitability of your vending machine business.

Assessing competition in the area

Assessing competition in the area is a crucial step in determining the best locations for your vending machines. By thoroughly researching and analyzing the existing vending machine landscape, you can gain valuable insights into the market saturation, customer preferences, and potential opportunities. This assessment allows you to identify areas with high demand and low competition, ensuring that your vending machines have a higher chance of success. Additionally, understanding the competition helps you tailor your product offerings and marketing strategies to stand out and attract customers. By taking the time to assess the competition in the area, you can make informed decisions that will maximize the profitability and long-term viability of your vending machine business.

Negotiating with Property Owners

Approaching property owners or managers

When approaching property owners or managers to secure locations for your vending machines, it is important to maintain a professional and respectful demeanor. Start by researching the property and its target audience to ensure that it aligns with your vending machine offerings. Once you have identified a potential location, reach out to the property owner or manager through a formal letter or email. Clearly state the purpose of your communication and explain the benefits of having a vending machine on their property. Highlight how your vending machines can provide convenience and a wide range of products to their customers or employees. Additionally, emphasize any unique features or services your vending machines offer, such as accepting contactless payments or providing healthy snack options. By presenting a well-thought-out proposal and demonstrating the value your vending machines can bring, you increase your chances of securing a favorable location for your business.

Negotiating lease terms and conditions

Negotiating lease terms and conditions is a crucial step for entrepreneurs looking to establish their vending machine business. The success of your venture greatly depends on the location of your machines, as it directly impacts the foot traffic and potential customers. By carefully negotiating lease terms, you can secure prime locations that are likely to experience high footfall and attract a diverse range of customers. Additionally, negotiating lease terms allows you to adapt to changes in the market and make adjustments to your vending machine locations as needed. As an entrepreneur, it is essential to stay agile and be open to change in order to maximize the profitability of your vending machine business.

Understanding legal requirements and permits

Understanding legal requirements and permits is crucial when it comes to setting up vending machines. Before you start placing your machines in various locations, it is important to research and comply with the legal regulations in your area. This includes obtaining the necessary permits and licenses to operate vending machines. Failure to do so can result in fines or even the closure of your business. Additionally, understanding the legal requirements ensures that you are operating within the boundaries of the law and maintaining a professional image. By following the proper procedures, you can avoid potential legal issues and create a successful vending machine business.

Evaluating Foot Traffic

Measuring foot traffic patterns

Measuring foot traffic patterns is a crucial step in determining the best locations for your vending machines. By analyzing the flow of people in specific areas, you can identify high-traffic zones and strategically place your machines for maximum visibility and accessibility. This data-driven approach ensures that your corporation service company can reach a larger customer base and generate higher profits. Understanding foot traffic patterns also allows you to make informed decisions when it comes to expanding your vending machine business, as you can target areas with the highest potential for success. By investing time and resources into measuring foot traffic patterns, you can optimize the placement of your vending machines and increase the chances of attracting customers to your corporation service company.

Determining peak hours and days

Determining peak hours and days is crucial for the success of your vending machine business. By analyzing customer traffic and sales data, you can identify the specific times and days when your target audience is most likely to visit your vending machines. This information allows you to strategically plan your operations, ensuring that your machines are fully stocked and ready to meet the demand during peak hours. Additionally, understanding peak hours and days can help you optimize your marketing efforts. For example, if you have a vending machine that sells sarees, you can use this data to schedule advertising campaigns during the times when potential customers are more likely to be in the area. By doing so, you can effectively reach your target audience and increase the visibility of your saree business. With the right timing and strategic advertising, you can maximize the profitability of your vending machines and attract more customers to your business.

Considering seasonal variations

Considering seasonal variations is crucial when choosing the best locations for your vending machines. By analyzing the fluctuations in consumer demand throughout the year, you can strategically place your machines in areas that are likely to experience high foot traffic during specific seasons. This approach can greatly contribute to improving business profitability. By capitalizing on seasonal trends and offering products that align with the needs and preferences of customers during different times of the year, you can maximize sales and revenue. Furthermore, understanding seasonal variations allows you to make informed decisions regarding inventory management, ensuring that your machines are always stocked with popular items during peak seasons. By carefully considering the impact of seasonal variations, you can position your vending machines for success and enhance your overall business performance.

Assessing Potential Profitability

Estimating sales potential

Estimating sales potential is a crucial step in determining the success of your vending machine business. By analyzing various factors such as foot traffic, demographics, and competition, you can make informed decisions about the best locations for your machines. One important consideration is the presence of vector icons, which can greatly enhance the visibility and appeal of your vending machines. Vector icons are highly versatile and can be easily customized to match your brand and attract customers. With their clean lines and scalable nature, vector icons make your machines stand out in any location. Incorporating vector icons into your vending machine design not only adds a touch of professionalism but also helps in creating a visually appealing and user-friendly experience for your customers. By strategically placing your vending machines in areas with vector icons, you can maximize your sales potential and increase customer engagement.

Calculating operating costs

Calculating operating costs is a crucial step in determining the profitability of your vending machine business. By accurately estimating the expenses associated with running your machines, you can make informed decisions about pricing, location selection, and overall business strategy. To calculate operating costs, you need to consider factors such as machine maintenance, inventory replenishment, electricity usage, and any additional expenses like insurance or licensing fees. By carefully analyzing these costs, you can ensure that your vending machines are positioned in the most profitable locations, maximizing your revenue potential.

Analyzing return on investment

Analyzing return on investment is a crucial step in determining the success of your vending machine business. It involves evaluating the profitability of different locations and making informed decisions based on the potential return on investment. One important factor to consider is the bank account for taquería. By analyzing the financial performance of your vending machines in different taquerías, you can identify the most profitable locations and allocate your resources accordingly. This analysis allows you to optimize your business strategy and maximize your profits. With a formal tone, it is essential to approach this process with diligence and attention to detail, ensuring that your vending machines are placed in the best locations to generate a significant return on investment.

Conclusion

Importance of thorough research and analysis

Thorough research and analysis are of paramount importance when it comes to choosing the best locations for your vending machines. This crucial step ensures that you make informed decisions based on data and insights rather than mere intuition. By conducting thorough research, you can identify the target market, understand consumer behavior, and evaluate the potential profitability of each location. Additionally, analysis allows you to assess the competition, consider the proximity to your suppliers, and factor in any local regulations or restrictions. By taking the time to gather and analyze relevant information, you can significantly increase the chances of success for your vending machine business.

Maximizing profitability through strategic location selection

Maximizing profitability through strategic location selection is crucial for the success of any vending machine business. By carefully considering the target market and tailoring the service to their needs, vending machine owners can ensure that their machines are placed in high-traffic areas where they will attract the most customers. Additionally, offering a variety of convenient payment methods, such as cash, credit cards, and mobile payments, can further enhance profitability by accommodating the preferences of different customers. By combining a strategic location selection with a diverse range of payment options, vending machine businesses can optimize their revenue potential and maximize their profitability.

Continuous monitoring and adaptation for optimal results

Continuous monitoring and adaptation for optimal results is crucial when it comes to choosing the best locations for your vending machines. One important aspect of this process is the rate sheet for construction services. This rate sheet provides detailed information about the costs and services associated with constructing vending machine locations. By referring to the rate sheet, vending machine operators can make informed decisions about the most cost-effective locations to set up their machines. Additionally, continuous monitoring allows operators to track the performance of each location and make necessary adaptations to maximize profitability. 2024.05.15 00:29 Matty_1843 Bad Pokemon Game Idea

What if they made Pokemon action platformers based on the movies?
At this point, there's lots of Pokemon movies and special episodes that all have potential for like, a God of War style action platformer. Most of the gameplay loop would be playing as Ash, or one of his companions, and going through a semi-open level doing puzzles and interacting with NPCs and Pokemon. Whenever a Pokemon battle occurs, it'd be in a boss battle in a similar style to Pokken Tournament, with real time combat and not a huge emphasis on game logic. For the most part the plot of each story would play out the same, but could be altered slightly by the outcome of combat encounters or choices made by the player, either sticking to the original storyline or going in a different direction. It'd get especially interesting for things like the Sinnoh movies, which are one big arc with a lot of room for different variations in the story.
An on the spot example of what I mean: Let's say, Kyurem movie, the one with Keldeo. The game opens with you, playing as Keldeo, heading to Kyurem's lair, and on the way you're given a montage of quotes from the other Swords of Justice that show Keldeo starting to second guess his decision just a little bit, but not enough to make him change his mind. You arrive and there's a "you're supposed to lose" fight against Kyurem that also acts as the combat tutorial, or you control Kyurem and easily win against Keldeo. Then the opening credits play out pretty much the same, maybe a QTE with Scraggy jumping on the train. In the city, the next action scene has you swap control between Ash/his Pokemon and Keldeo as needed with flying around the city and sliding across the ice with Boldore and the whole train tunnel scene happens, with you controlling each character as the flashback explaining their escape happens. You make your way back to Kyurem's lair for the final battle with the same flashbacks as in the movie, and you repeat the Kyurem fight as the final boss. It ends with you, controlling Kyurem, stopping the lair from collapsing on everyone and walking off. Roll credits.
Feel free to explain how bad this whole idea is below, it just kind of came to me and I had to get it out before I lost it forever.

2024.05.15 00:29 HelpfulJello5361 CMV: Disparity in any system is not automatically evidence of discriminatory practices

This seems to be a common sentiment for a lot of people and I think it's a projection of their ideology, which is one not of equality, but equity.
For the purposes of this post I use the definition of equity as meaning "Equal outcomes for all identity groups". But that is not realistic or rational.
Equity is not natural and for companies/corporations for example, you can't expect the demography of the company to match the demography of the surrounding area, and for larger corporations it's especially unreasonable to expect the corporation as a whole to match the demography of the entire country. I'm talking about America, and in a place like America each state has different demography depending on the state and even the county.
But even so, you can't expect the demography of even a county to match every company in that county. People have different interests and capabilities for any number of reasons and that's normal and okay.
I don't think ironworkers are mostly men because they dedicate energy to discriminating against women. Same with construction workers. Or oil rig workers.
I don't think Kindergarten teachers are mostly women because they dedicate energy to discriminating against men. Same with nurses. Or secretaries.
I think this is just a natural reflection of the biological differences between males and females and our natural tendencies, aptitudes, and personality traits.
This could apply to ethnic groups as well, for any number of reasons. Sometimes those reasons seem arbitrary, and that's okay. But I think usually it's cultural.
In 2006, Joe Biden, remarked that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent". I guess what he meant is that most people who own gas stations and convenience stores are Indian/Pakistani/etc. I seem to recall he made a similar statement during a political debate.
People bristle at comments like these, saying they're racial stereotypes. But they're true? The statistics back that up.
I hope the anti-AI crowd will forgive me, but I had this funny dialogue with ChatGPT just now. In asking about Biden's remarks, it says:
This remark was widely criticized as being insensitive and perpetuating stereotypes about Indian-Americans. While the comment was specifically about Indian-Americans, it does touch upon a broader stereotype that certain immigrant groups are heavily represented in the ownership of convenience stores and gas stations.
But then I asked it, "Which demographic group is dominant when it comes to ownership of convenience stores and gas stations?"
And the answer included:
"...one prominent group is Indian-Americans, particularly those of Gujarati descent. This demographic has a substantial presence in the convenience store and gas station industry.
Other demographic groups, including Arab-Americans, Korean-Americans, and Pakistani-Americans, also have a significant presence in the ownership of convenience stores and gas stations."
So...reality is insensitive? This stereotype is bad? But the stereotypes are literally true according to the data.
Does this mean that the gas station ownership industry is discriminating against white men? I don't see any reason to think so. Why is it a bad thing that certain ethnic groups dominate the ownership of various businesses? Asian-Americans owning laundromats is another one that comes to mind.
My thought is, who cares? Why is this a bad thing? I just see it as another interesting quirk of living in a multicultural society. There are certain things attributed to various ethnic groups for various reasons and that's just part of the delightful tapestry of a diverse society.
The way I see it, it's okay that we have lopsided representation of various groups in various different fields. There are many different kinds of companies/hobbies/whatever, and they have many different kinds of work cultures, required aptitudes and personality types for the employees, and this results in sometimes unequal representation. And that's okay.
I could expand on the title of this CMV to relate to many other, more "serious" topics, but that would make this post much longer and much more complicated.
Anyway, a lot of people seem to disagree with the idea that disparity is not automatically evidence of discrimination. Why is that? Change my view.

2024.05.15 00:26 FriendlyNeighborOrca What arcs will the current main characters have from books 6-10?

So, for a very long time I use to believe that the current main characters would become side characters in the back half of the books since that's what everyone kept saying.
Only to read some of Brandon's interviews basically saying the complete opposite. For example some quotes of his:
"The characters who survive the first five will still be main characters as well, but it's gonna turn more what happened with the Heralds and things like that"
Or
"The second arc will still have some of the current main characters main characters still. And it will be very connected to this story--but they will have separate arcs."
So, we know that whoever survives from Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Venli, and Szeth will still be a main pov character in the next 5 books but with the difference that they will have different arcs which are going to be more involved on the heralds.
I honestly believe that Brandon has kind of told us what Kaladin's arc will be which is basically the same thing he will be doing to Ishar and that is help the heralds overcome their madness or at least make them less mad. I know many here have a boner with the Kaladin dying theory but I believe he is not dying at least not until book 9 or 10.
Now, for Kaladin is easy to see what he could be doing but for the others. I'm not so sure. I guess, for Venli it could he about restoring the singers and making a pact with the humans to fight against Odium together.
I'm not smart enough to theorize about Dalinar, Szeth or Shallan. Obviously, some of them could die especially Dalinar or Szeth which to me are the ones more likely to die.

2024.05.15 00:25 133eee55 intimacy and adulthood

Hi everyone, this post contains mentions of SA so sorry if its triggering for someone. Also, I should mention that I've never went to a psychologist so these are just my subjective observations. Sorry for my bad English.
Since as long as I remember I've always felt suicidal. Not in a sense that I have an active plan, but it was more or less an idealization of the death idea itself. When I was little, maybe 4-5 yo, I clearly remember praying for god 'to take me' not in a sense that I wanted to go to heaven but simply I wanted not to exist cause I couldn't really comprehend the idea of permanent death. I remember also that I tried to choke myself multiple times, which obviously did not work out lol. I've lived in a dysfunctional family in a sense that my mom was/is very neurotic and my dad cheated on her when I was little. However, they never divorced for 'our good' but instead just constantly argued. I think because of this, I felt 'unloved' (objectively, my parents did/do love me very much). I felt like I take up too much space and been extremely self-conscious about myself. As a child, and now, I'm extremely sensitive person with basically zero self confidence. However, people, including my parents, always told me that I'm very emotionally mature and 'have an old soul'. I definitely do have anxiety, I'm not officially diagnosed but I think it's pretty self-explanatory (but I understand that I shouldn't self diagnose). For example, I was always scared of everything when I was younger (and now too), I even struggle to go to buy groceries or run errands alone. I'm scared of socializing but I have some good friends. But I've always felt like every single move of mine is watched and judged even though I know it's just in my head. I'm scared to go and talk about it with someone. My closest friends of 9-10 years don't even know nothing about my family except their age or names cause I'm ashamed of explaining things. Here I just present general info, sorry if this is already taking too long to read.
Moving on, I vividly remember drawing really inappropriate pictures imitating various sexual acts/forms when I was around 5, I guess. I knew those drawings were a bad thing cause I felt ashamed of showing them to someone and I always hid them or destroyed them after drawing. I mostly grew up with my lovely grandma and I don't have any bad memories with regards to my dad, cousins or any other family members. However, now, in my early adulthood I am extremely struggling with building romantic relationships cause I feel very weird about intimacy. I don't see myself as attractive or lovable (even though 'objectively' looking I'm conventionally attractive, I guess). Recently I saw a video about meanings of children drawings and this memory I told you about my childhood 'secret drawings' struck me. It felt like I finally found an answer I was searching for so long. The thing is, I don't remember 'actually' something happening to me. I just know that during that age I shouldn't be able to think of such scenes. Is there any possibility that I've experienced SA? Cause I can't show any proof of that but at the same time I feel like something really bad happened in my childhood. And this is why I'm the way I'm now. Is this worth talking to a psychologist? How should I approach this topic cause I can't just go to the first session and say all of this.
Thank you for reading. If someone would be willing to share their own similar stories, I would find that very comforting too.

2024.05.15 00:23 mariam0_0 Translated books by non-English speaking European authors?

I love books from European countries (usually not the uk) which are maybe kinda cliche and predictable but the romance is just chefs kiss. They aren't usually very well known but I get obsessed with them because there's just something about the characters or romance that hits different.
Examples of these are the Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Geir, the Tearsmith by Erin Doom and Save Me by Mona Kasten (Maxton Hall series) idk if the english translation for this last one has been released yet but i read it in italian bc it has been translated.
All of these were best sellers in italy, (saw them on displays and bokk shops etc, not sure about how they did in sales or statistically). Another one I found in 2013/2014 at a library in italy was The Summer I Turned Pretty which I loved but was ofc translated into Italian from English.
For some reason I'm not a big fan of other super popular romances, I only like Emily Henry and a few others but not the best sellers such as Colleen Hoover, Zodiac Academy, Ali Hazelwood etc
Thank you :)

2024.05.15 00:22 SuikoRyos I think DW8 made me biased against Liu Bei.

Quick background summary: always wanted to get into Dynasty Warriors, the only PS I owned was the first one, my first Warriors game was SW3 on the Wii, and my first DW was the PC port of DW8XLCE (or I think that was the order of the letters).
As a total newbie to the Dynasty Warriors franchise (and therefore to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms lore) I played DW8 completely blind. I didn't know who were any of the characters. So I run the game, select Story Mode and the game presents me five options: Wei, Wu, Shu, Jin and Other. Reminder that I came from SW3, which had a character-centric Story Mode. By that time I also didn't know jack shit from the Sengoku era, but at least I could choose which stories to play based on the character's models --I either started with Nobunaga because he looked cool or with Kai because she was a sexy lady dressed in red.
Back to DW. Since I wasn't sure which kingdom to start playing the game, I just played them in the order the game presented them to me. Which now, in hindsight, made me realize that, maybe unwillingly, the game leaned me towards being anti-Liu Bei. My reasoning:
By the time I reached the point I had to play as the Shu characters, the damage was already done. Playing Chibi as Wei? The tragic defeat of a great general bested by circumstances. Playing Chibi as Wu? The heroic underdogs fighting teeth and nails against a bigger enemy. Playing Chibi as Shu? Let's use every underhanded trick under our sleeves to get out of this one.
Meanwhile in SW: as said before, I played as Nobunaga first, but I didn't feel any animosity when playing as Nagamasa or Mitsuhide later. I love Nene's character, but seeing her depressed after losing all her loved ones during Hanzo's story didn't make me hate Hanzo himself. I'm pro Mitsunari, so while I can joke about Ieyasu being an opportunistic like Liu Bei, I still can see some nuance to his character. There was no "common enemy" so to speak between all the stories.
And that seems to be one disadvantage with faction-based narratives. If there's 3 main factions, by the time you finish the stories of two of them, it's very likely you will be inclined to see the last one as the "common enemy". Of course, I'm just talking off my ass right know. So I ask to any who was patient enough to read so far:
Did you happen to have a similar experience? For example, if you played Shu's and Wu's stories first, did that make you feel like Wei was the bad guy of the whole game?

2024.05.15 00:21 Lambi79 Why do the unofficial Joel mods look better than Naughty Dog’s official No Return implementation?

Playing as any other character that Abby or Ellie looks crap in Part II No Return. For example Joel, has a very large indent on his torso where Abby’s backpack (side note: why don’t characters have their own backpacks in this mode?) conflicts with his character model, the jacket clips regularly through his right leg because Abby has the weird idle crouch animation and Joel’s thumb may be broken because it just seems to break itself when Joel is reloading his revolver (which also btw, has the trigger for some reason pulled all the way back so much so that it’s non existent and characters pull an imaginary revolver in gameplay).
Also, very big thing, Joel is now way shorter due to limitations of Abby’s character size in game and her move set.
Then, we have the Joel mods running on Jailbroken PS4’s which, while the camera work could improve, make it look like you’re actually playing as Joel. I’ll link some videos below so you can see what I mean:
https://youtu.be/mfpufeS3ndU?si=D6UWSwYxiwI16z1C - Winter Joel (No Backpack unfortunately)
https://youtu.be/mfpufeS3ndU?si=D6UWSwYxiwI16z1C - Jackson Joel, skip to 1:44, shortest clip but best showcase (Joel’s backpack)
https://youtu.be/iEjTxiIZ0IE?si=e1a1t7If73SwjDFl - Patrol Joel (Joel’s Backpack, but not a skin in No Return)
https://youtu.be/W8YF7vGSJ38?si=9jrMHrlIr_4EE6bO - “Fake” Jackson Joel with Abby’s movements (Abby’s backpack)
Naughty Dog, please just put some more time into it. Or at least release it on PC so modders can fix this crap.

2024.05.15 00:15 Ur_Anemone Ending gender-based violence means building beyond prisons

Ending gender-based violence means building beyond prisons
Organizations like Desis Rising Up and Moving help South Asian communities reimagine safety outside of police, courts, and prisons
…For immigrant women across the U.S., the control exerted by their male partners only serves as the foundation for other forms of abuse—and domestic violence is an epidemic with deadly consequences. Every minute, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that for women under the age of 44, homicide is one of the leading causes of death, and nearly half of all victims are killed by men who are current or former intimate partners. Sixty-five percent of immigrant survivors have experienced some form of immigration-related abuse, according to the National Organization for Women.
Despite the dangers women face in abusive relationships with men, women are still criminalized when they defend themselves—and the consequences can be especially dire for immigrant women who potentially face family separation, detention, and deportation…
Immigrant women and children in mixed-status families can be particularly vulnerable to domestic violence. Abuse rates among immigrant women are as high as 49.8%, almost three times the national average. While domestic violence is largely underreported, immigrant survivors are even less likely to report abuse due to fears of detention and deportation…
In recent years, organizers have turned to collective defense campaigns to garner public support for criminalized survivors…These campaigns advocate for their safety and freedom through petitions, rallies, fundraisers, and other events. According to a recent report by Survived & Punished, a group that leads campaigns for survivors, these strategies create “a powerful locus of mass support, connection, and political momentum for survivors who are isolated through incarceration and media distortions.”
These campaigns have changed many survivors’ lives. An overwhelming number of criminalized survivors are Black women. For example, Marissa Alexander was convicted in 2012 of aggravated assault charges after firing a warning shot when her estranged, abusive husband attacked her. The National Free Marissa Now campaign exerted media and political pressure, eventually helping her legal team appeal her conviction. Alexander was freed in 2017. Campaigns like Alexander’s raised national awareness around the issues facing criminalized survivors and paved the way for other survivors…
The experiences of criminalized survivors capture the limitations of the carceral system’s efficacy in addressing gender-based violence and, more broadly, the role of the state in finding solutions.
Among the groups working to combat gender-based violence, some use an organizing approach focused on fighting for the freedom of criminalized survivors or combating the roots of violence in their communities. Others offer direct services to survivors, connecting them to shelters, lawyers, and government assistance...
Direct service organizations are often limited in their scope because they receive government funding, according to Amrita Doshi, the executive director of the anti-domestic violence advocacy group South Asian SOAR. Specifically, the funding comes from legislation like the Violence Against Women Act, “which defines gender-based violence as a crime and directly invests in carceral solutions as the primary solution for gender-based violence,” Doshi said.
This presents a “Catch-22” for many organizations, according to Doshi, because while they can expand with government funding, they also cannot explore alternative solutions outside of the carceral state.
Even with funding from the state and other donors, service providers across the country are struggling to meet the needs of survivors. For example, according to a national study from the National Network to End Domestic Violence, over the course of just one day in September 2023, 7,143 survivors had unmet requests for assistance from a domestic violence organization to help them find shelter, leaving them unable to find a shelter, hotel, motel, transitional housing, or any other safe option to escape abuse.
To Nourn, it’s clear that the solution lies in grassroots organizing separate from the state and service-based organizations. The Asian Prisoner Support Committee often organizes mutual aid for survivors to ease their financial burden so they can attain basic necessities while also having the financial ability to heal and grow…
In Nourn’s work with criminalized survivors and their loved ones, she prioritizes the needs of survivors as opposed to the interests of the state that focus on prosecution. “It’s collectively working as a community that we are able to support each other to address harm and safety, and that’s what organizers do as opposed to domestic violence, gender-based, state-funded organizations,” Nourn said…
Approaches outside of the carceral system have proven successful across various communities. Take for example the work of Lavender Phoenix. As a way to address anti-LGBTQIA+ and gender-based violence, the organization works to move resources away from policing and funnel them into housing and community-based solutions.
“Last year, we started a free peer counseling program led by and for queer and trans API, and that team trained more than 35 peer counselors and provided that free mental health support to more than 20 folks,” Wang explained. The group also trains individuals on how to address interpersonal violence and establish safety networks so people have alternative contacts in moments of crisis instead of calling the police. Lavender Phoenix also launched a campaign calling to redirect the police budget in San Francisco because, as Wang said, increased policing is a “temporary and false solution.”
LGBTQIA+ people are more likely than their cisgender and heterosexual peers to experience intimate partner violence at some point in their lives. LGBTQIA+ communities also face tremendous barriers to seeking help, according to the Williams Institute. For example, legal definitions of domestic violence often exclude LGBTQIA+ people, and there are few assistance resources for these communities…
Organizations across the country are charting their own paths for addressing violence in their communities. For example, in Minneapolis, Man Forward is “transforming masculinity” by creating ways to hold men accountable for harmful behavior outside of the criminal legal system. The organization receives referrals for participants from workplaces, organizations, and community members and offers one-on-one coaching and healing circles…

2024.05.15 00:15 Awkward_Excitement97 Question about Letter of Financial Support for 462 Visa Application

Hey everyone, I'm in the process of helping my girlfriend from Argentina with her application for the 462 visa, and I've heard mixed opinions about signing a letter of financial support. As an Australian citizen and her partner (or even just a friend), I'm wondering if providing this support could potentially cause issues with immigration, as I've heard it might be seen as a reason for her not to leave the country. Can anyone share their experience or advice on this matter? Thanks in advance!
