2024.05.13 22:24 Sin-God Master Of All: A Really Neat Perk (& Also Other Generic Gamer Musings)

Today I'm discussing Master of All, which is a perk from Generic Gamer. If you've never seen this perk or heard of this jump... this perk is probably the best singular perk in the jump (though ALL of them are really good), but it's not the INTENDED reason to come here. I personally think an early jump could stand to benefit from fusing GGJ with a more mundane jump (which is what my latest story-jumper is doing though not by choice) and grabbing this perk, it's appeal is kind of amazing. Now let's see the ACTUAL perk!
Master of All: Specialists focus on depth at the expense of breadth; generalists focus on breadth at the expense of depth. But what if you could focus on a single ability and have it benefit all of them? When you train one skill, ability, or power, that training and development applies not just to it, but to all of the skills, abilities, and powers you possess.
This is, understandably, a capstone perk. It is immensely powerful, and is the best TRAINING perk I've ever seen. There are BETTER perks out there for mastering stuff, heck I'll even include the other capstone in this jump just so you can see a better perk for MASTERING something.
Hyperspecialization: There’s focusing in a few specific areas, and then there’s this. Select a single skill, ability, power, Perk, whatever, so long as it’s possible to improve. At base, two things happen. A: the chosen ability progresses as if you’re training with it all the time, even when you’re doing nothing; if you were to actively train with it, the rate of growth would be effectively doubled. B: the rate of growth and development for the chosen ability is multiplied by a hundred.
Now, keep in mind that that’s just at base — both of these boosts increase gradually but exponentially the longer you focus on a single ability. Give it a few days, and the rate of growth will be multiplied by two hundred; a month, and by a thousand. You can change what ability you’re focusing on at any time at the cost of resetting the accrued exponential boosts.
Hyperspecialization IS a better perk if you want to master singular skills (or if you need a boost in power or skill in some SPECIFIC area but don't have the time to actually sit down and hone that area), but if you want to TRAIN something, if you value working for your goals, and if you want to be a jack of all trades Master of All is the better perk. And of course you could always grab BOTH perks, you could even do so without a SINGLE drawback AND you could still get other perks WITHOUT stacking drawbacks due to the discount mechanics of this jump. But I strongly prefer Master of All, personally.
Master of All is a very creative way to reward engagement in a setting which is something I'm always a fan of. A smart jumper who is not constrained by something like the notion of a fickle benefactor who ACTUALLY punishes boring jumpers might get something like Hyperspecialization and want to turtle up, but with Master of All you need to do SOMETHING for it to benefit you. Now WHAT you do doesn't matter, so long as you do SOMETHING that serves as training.
A very fun build could be for someone to snag both Skills, which is a function of the gamer system in Generic Gamer and then grab MoA and go to something like Generic School Years and diligently study. That studying will definitely count for MoA, since studying will definitely become or involve a skill as defined by Skills. This means that while you're studying you're becoming better at gymnastics, or cooking, or painting, or... using The Force, or mana management, or whatever other skills you've gained at this point in your journey.
One small facet of Master of All that is very interesting is how it stacks with uncappers and the very neat knowledge that there is a free uncapper in Generic Gamer (it's a facet of the gamer system!). This means that Master of All will eventually give you stuff like functionally limitless stamina and potentially unlimited strength, once you get the right upgradeable stuff at least. A fun thing I like about this perk is how it affects stuff like workouts. Workouts not only make you more physically fit with this, they also strengthen your perks, strengthen facets of your physique, and can even improve your luck (assuming there is a perk for your luck, which there IS in this jump in two senses: there's The Devil's Own Luck, AND there's a gamer function called Attributes, which CAN give you a luck stat if you want, I recommend it partially to mix with this perk). The idea that going for a joydrive can strengthen your telekinesis, or actively make you smarter is very funny but also very true with this perk and the right mix of gamer things.
This perk on it's own is somewhat limited, but a smart strategist who wants their jumper to be able to stand alone has a lot of options they can use. Two of my favorites here are Jack of All Trades and Experience Booster. JoAT is a fun perk that makes it much easier for you to hone new perksyou acquire along your chain, and Experience Booster is just a POWERHOUSE of a perk that boosts how much experience you get from anything that gives you experience, whether you only get it from defeating enemies or you get it from doing minor stuff, and if you mix it with Master of All you get a powerful combination since it makes it so that your workouts buff your brain by twenty times as much as they would otherwise. The best way to cheese it has got to be to go all in on game-ifying your life and taking the skills function of the gamer system, which allows you to make a ton of stuff into a skill, which thus plugs it into the Master of All functionality. Here, look at the description of Skills so you can see what I mean.
Skills (-100/-200/-300 GP)
For 100 GP, any ability or skill you possess becomes a ‘Skill’, with a skill level, increasing in power and efficiency as it levels up, done by gaining enough experience, which is gathered by using the skill; Level 1 is maximum inefficiency, while Level 99 is the maximum efficiency you could normally get — you can go even beyond that, though, with no hard cap to how high a skill’s level can be. The higher a skill’s level, the more experience required to get it to the next level. Generally, the more powerful and useful a skill, the slower it is to level up.
Any powers, skills, or abilities you already possess are automatically converted into System Skills. You may gain new skills by performing relevant actions; for example, throwing a knife might earn you the skill ‘Knife Throwing’. Skills will not deteriorate with time or disuse.
For an additional 100 GP, once a skill has reached Level 99, it may ‘prestige’, granting you an at least vaguely similar but much more powerful skill at Level 1 without taking away this one or, occasionally, traits if you’ve purchased the option. Prestige skills may themselves prestige. Prestige skills are especially difficult to level up.
For an additional 100 GP, you may ‘combine’ certain skills into a new one — without actually losing the ingredient skills.
This is hands down the best way to cheese this. This is also just a VERY good function in general, but guaranteeing that your skills can improve AND uncapping how good the stuff you do and the stuff you make can be is INCREDIBLE. This also allows you to become holistically better at everything just by cooking, or reading, and thus rewards you for having hobbies. This perk is very nice because it frees you from the constraints of training and having to incorporate stuff that makes you a stronger jumper but is more time-consuming and is not what a native would do.
I'm gonna take a beat to talk about Hyperspecialization again because one thing that's worth mentioning is that it's a passive trainer perk. It's MORE than that, sure, and in fact if you get it you're getting something worth every bit of CP you pay for it, but at it's core it's an enormously powerful passive trainer. There are other passive trainers. There didn't USE to be, at least not a LOT of them, but they exist now (these types of perks exist in several Edrogrimshell jumps, usually they are named "Dabbler" but not all of them have that name) so this perk has lost of some what made it unique. A perk doesn't have to be unique to be valuable, but it helps. Master of All, on the other hand is part of a, as far as I've seen, rarer type of perk: a training synergizer (something which blends types of training and studying together), and it's also a COMPLETE training synergizer which I've never seen before or anywhere else (normally the training synergizers I've seen link SPECIFIC skills, such as a perk from Generic Wizard which syncs how strong you are with your skill as a wizard, or a perk from Generic Culinary Warrior that links your cooking and combat skills). What this means is that if you miss out on Hyperspecialization you can go to other jumps and snag an equivalent perk there. In fact, you can actually grab something that is a MINOR improvement over Hyperspecilization, because all of the passive trainers I've seen let you passively train more than one thing at a time. It IS true that Hyperspecilization beats out these other, baby perks in how quickly it trains what you assign, but that minor aspect of its winning out is somewhat lessened in importance when you remember that placing something new in the lone slot hyperspecialization gives you resets how fast it trains the thing in question. Master of All is both less easy to compare to other existing perks and doesn't have any internal conditions that weaken active usage of it like Hyperspecialization does.
Now that's not to put you off of Hyperspecialization, if I were in a real chain I'd want to grab BOTH Hyperspecialization and Master of All (and not just because MoA completely removes the weakness of Hyperspecialization, but that's certainly a part of it haha), these are INCREDIBLY powerful perks, but one is... one is more universally useful than the other. Master of All is just an absolute S-tier perk. I cannot imagine any build where MoA is applicable where it wouldn't be an absolute GOD-TIER of a purchase. The only possible combination I could think of that might invalidate MoA would be the Sage x Spirit Touched combination from the ATLA Redux jump, and that'd be most of your base CP in a jump that has MULTIPLE sections worth of stuff to try and grab.
To put this in perspective, with a perk like this and the right combination of gamer things you can go into a setting like Chronicle and hone your telekinesis by working on your photography skills. You can become a better chef by doing your math homework and rereading whatever chapter of MacBeth you're on in English. Once you've gained the right skills you can become better at soccer and other sports while you design a website. Become a better wizard by practicing juggling. This is an incredible QoL perk that frees you from a lot of the time-crunchiness that comes with only having a decade in a setting as opposed to a lifetime. Honestly that's kind of the biggest strength of the particular nature of the Generic Gamer Jump, it does a LOT to free up your time and really let you optimize your time in a setting.

Generic Gamer As A Time Optimizer

So depending on the setting, a decade is either a LOT of time or it's BARELY any time. In Avatar the Last Airbender, a decade can be a HUGE amount of time (the entire plot of the first show is about one calendar year according to one of the show's execs), but in Harry Potter a decade is only a bit more time than the plot takes, and truthfully is barely a blink of an eye. So perks that allow you to have a special relationship with time are always good.
One of the critical facets of Generic Gamer is how it allows you to optimize time. There's definitely some underlying logic here, since game characters have INCREDIBLE growth rates, and I love that about this jump. Generic Gamer, for the cost of 50 GP lets you lose the need to sleep, the need to eat, and the need to drink. That is an INCREDIBLE boost to the amount of functional time you have in a jump, if you started your chain off as a base human and entered this jump as a non-boosted human or as an only minorly-boosted human. Getting rid of three of the most essential bodily needs for the cost of 50 points in a thing where you start off with 1350 points makes it a steal (You get different points for perks and for gamer system customization in this jump).
A big part of how essential this is, is how much time it saves you by eliminating sleep but in all honesty removing your need to drink or eat is also critical. I don't know how many jumps could safely be taken as first jumps that completely eliminate the need for sleep, food, AND water, but this one can and that's pretty OP given the costs. Also, bv eliminating the need for stuff like food and water you make entire other jumps wholly more viable. Minecraft, for example, becomes WILDLY safer if you don't have to work about starvation, since hunger is directly linked to your ability to recover from wounds but in Generic Gamer you can completely subvert this system by spending 100 GP: purchase Gamer Body (eliminating the need for food) and also purchase the HP System (which gives you fiat-backed regen, so long as you don't take a hit for a beat, giving you a passive heal much like some FPS games).
Gamer's Body & HP System guarantee you survive any setting that isn't actively trying to kill you, and also frees you up to more safely do what you want like explore or just have a good time. If you don't have to pay for food or housing for sleep, you either don't need money or you need a LOT less of it. Stuff like this is also DRAMATICALLY powerful for vampires and other creatures that are normally driven by, or at least associated with, constant hunger. Also this just makes zombie jumps hilariously easy for you to solo since the number of risks you have to take (while solo) are SO MUCH lower. Funnily enough the right set of perks here even lower the risks you have to take when you work WITH other people, as Inventory lets you both raid places by yourself (since you can store an infinite amount of stuff on you by yourself) AND lowers how much supplies you need for your friends (since time doesn't pass for stuff in your inventory, preventing it from going bad!).
This jump is also filled with training boosters, with Jack of All Trades, Experience Booster, Hyperspecialization, and Master of All all qualifying as training boosters broadly, they all just qualify as different TYPES of training boosters. This is very interesting, since one of the big things a lot of adventure jumpers will need sooner or later are training boosts of their own. The best training boost here is Experience Booster which buffs training by 100 times, a STUNNING boost to one's training, and this stacks hilariously with every other training booster here.
I have a lot of thoughts on this jump and I think I'll keep writing them down from time to time. It's just so good.

2024.05.13 16:53 raisinfarm Failing my degree after 6 years (it's so over)

Quick Disclaimer: I'm well aware that I'm the one at fault here. I'm not looking for sympathy! I just have a lot to get off my chest and am too embarrassed to talk to friends and family about this. Thanks.
TLDR: I enrolled at University in 2018. Electrical and Electronic Engineering BEng (with an initial Foundation Year since I'm in the UK and hadn't done any STEM subjects at A Level). I've had to repeat every single year since. Now it's 2024, I'm still in second year despite being 6 years into what should've only been a 4 year course, and I'm going to fail again. I've exhausted all options when it comes to staying at Uni and will be forced to withdraw from the program when I fail my upcoming assignments this August.
Realistically I should've dropped out of Uni after my Foundation Year. Having not studied any technical subject (especially maths) for at least three years prior, I struggled with the course content from the get-go. Concepts that I'd never seen before were glossed over because they're 'fundamentals'. I spent almost all of my free time in the library/labs doing independent study trying to catch up to my peers. To be fair, I passed the year with a decent grade. But I destroyed my mental and physical health doing it. Completely burned myself out.
Then into first year. The jump between the Foundation Degree and actual Undergrad program really hit me hard. I tried to tell myself that it was fine because everyone was making the same leap, but I still felt way out of my depth. For the first couple weeks, I didn't understand a single thing in my lectures. I was struggling to retain the things I'd learned during Foundation (because I'd essentially crammed three years worth of teaching into one) and it made me really depressed. I skipped a couple lectures, then a couple more, and it spiralled quickly from there.
From that point, my mental health has *really* suffered. And I know what you're probably thinking -- another person playing the 'mental health card' -- and I don't blame you for thinking it, but trust that I'm not exaggerating here. I'm talking suicidal ideation, psychosis etc. especially during the COVID lockdown year. As well as all the ~ depression stuff ~ I was also diagnosed with ADHD which, yeah, I suppose makes sense. A shit cherry on top of a shit cake. Thankfully I've received extensive therapy and am doing well now but it's too late.
I've turned into the type of student that other students, and professors, hate. I despise myself for it. I didn't attend classes, I didn't study, I tried my hardest when it came to a group project because I didn't want to let the others down but I know my work was sub-par. Somehow I deluded myself into thinking I'll be able to catch up. As if someone with very limited understanding of engineering could just jump into the second year of a degree and pass. I didn't even look at the assignment brief until recently. I do still have passion for the subject but I have given up on it. Now, even if a fairy waved a magic wand and gave me the motivation I had during that very first year, I know I would not be able to do enough to pass in August because I'd be starting from the basics again.
I've wasted six years of my life, racked up over 100k in student debt and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt. For the rest of my life, I'll regret not working harder when I had the chance.

2024.05.13 15:35 baltimore-aureole Here it comes - “expert” disinfo that home ownership is a bad idea

Here it comes - “expert” disinfo that home ownership is a bad idea
https://preview.redd.it/ah82vmtc470d1.png?width=181&format=png&auto=webp&s=2668b5beed9904c37452609ebe93efdb0c43f1d0
Photo above - what is this Malibu beachfront mansion actually worth? And what did it sell for 2 years ago? The answer may surprise you . . .
America is obsessed with housing affordability. Me too - I'm a renter, and I don't get any return on my monthly rent checks. The government doesn't know how to solve this housing problem. Some people feel government IS the problem. Not Grant Cardone. He says that WE (people who want to buy homes) are the problem. He says “it's the worst investment you can make” (exact quote from his MSN link at bottom.)
Who is Grant Cardone? He's a motivational speaker, “sales coach”, and real estate investor. Did you catch that last part? He's a professional real estate investor. Telling us to stay away from real estate. Rent where we live, instead. Maybe even rent a place from him. As an investor, he has some available. And of course, Grant owns the places where HE personally lives. A $65 million Malibu mansion (Grant has listed it for sale; this is the current asking price). Mr. Cardone is possibly plotting an escape to Florida, like so many other California millionaires; he also owns a $28 million Miami mansion.
Let me repeat - Grant says that real estate is the worst investment we can make.
Okay, so he's an opportunist and a hypocrite. So what? Lots of people who are hawking advice on TV, or in their books, are hypocrites. And Grant has written at least 6 books on how to get rich. I'm not sure if any of them focus on getting rich by writing books, but that certainly seems to be a big part of his own strategy.
Where did Grant Cardone go to school? “Cardone University”. Stop laughing, this is really true. He founded some of online college, and awarded himself a Masters Degree in “sales”. I didn't know sales was an actual college major, but it must be. I wonder if Grant is going to give himself a PhD in sales, from his own university? It's what I would do, if I were him.
I won't do a deep dive on Grant's financial theories (in his link.) They are obviously demented. His theory is that if you bought a $576,000 house today, you'd need to sell if for $1.2 million in ten years just to break even. That's all in on the expenses – down payment, taxes, insurance, repairs . . . and WHAT??? Grant is also including the monthly mortgage payments in that 10-year cost of ownership? Does that mean those $400,000 in monthly mortgage checks over 10 years would have been money in the bank if you never bought the house? That you'd be living somewhere rent free - like your mom's basement? This is stupid-bad reasoning, Grant. Most people end up writing rent checks, rather than living for free.
In case you think I'm being too hard on Grant, let's go with his scenario. You need to sell that $576,000 house for $1.2 million in ten years. If you include REALLY REALLY old housing information, going back all the way to the 1960s, the average home inflation rate has been 4.5% annually since then. But that hasn't been the case recently. In 2023 the house inflation rate was 6.5%. In 2022 it was 7.2%. And so on. This ain't 1967, Grant.
What if you'd followed Grant's advice, and dumped all your home down payment money in the stock market ten years ago? You'd be up 129% (DJIA data. You'd have done even better in an S&P index fund – it's up around 150%). Suppose you HADNT bought that house, and had parked that 20% down payment ($115,000!!) in the stock market instead. Your 115k would now be worth . . . $280,000. But your home would have been worth $1.2 million – at least. And despite Grant's funny math, you would STILL have needed to pay $400,000 in rent over that period. Provided your rent never went up due to inflation. In that case your living costs could be even higher than the $400,000 he assumes.
Sorry Grant, I'm not buying what you're selling. Unless you're selling your own $65 million malibu mansion, and moving to a rental townhome. The mansion which you bought in 2022, for $40 million, and are now expecting a $25 million profit on, after less than 2 years.
Explain to me again why homes are a bad investment?
I'm just sayin' . . .
~'The worst investment people can make': Real estate guru Grant Cardone believes too many Americans are chasing the dream of homeownership. Here's what he says you should do instead (msn.com)~

2024.05.13 07:25 Willy_Fisher Count Magnus.

By what means the papers out of which I have made a connected story came into my hands is the last point which the reader will learn from these pages. But it is necessary to prefix to my extracts from them a statement of the form in which I possess them. They consist, then, partly of a series of collections for a book of travels, such a volume as was a common product of the forties and fifties. Horace Marryat's Journal of a Residence in Jutland and the Danish Isles is a fair specimen of the class to which I allude. These books usually treated of some unfamiliar district on the Continent. They were illustrated with woodcuts or steel plates. They gave details of hotel accommodation, and of means of communication, such as we now expect to find in any well-regulated guide-book, and they dealt largely in reported conversations with intelligent foreigners, racy innkeepers and garrulous peasants. In a word, they were chatty. Begun with the idea of furnishing material for such a book, my papers as they progressed assumed the character of a record of one single personal experience, and this record was continued up to the very eve, almost, of its termination. The writer was a Mr. Wraxall. For my knowledge of him I have to depend entirely on the evidence his writings afford, and from these I deduce that he was a man past middle age, possessed of some private means, and very much alone in the world. He had, it seems, no settled abode in England, but was a denizen of hotels and boarding-houses. It is probable that he entertained the idea of settling down at some future time which never came; and I think it also likely that the Pantechnicon fire in the early seventies must have destroyed a great deal that would have thrown light on his antecedents, for he refers once or twice to property of his that was warehoused at that establishment. It is further apparent that Mr. Wraxall had published a book, and that it treated of a holiday he had once taken in Brittany. More than this I cannot say about his work, because a diligent search in bibliographical works has convinced me that it must have appeared either anonymously or under a pseudonym. As to his character, it is not difficult to form some superficial opinion. He must have been an intelligent and cultivated man. It seems that he was near being a Fellow of his college at Oxford—Brasenose, as I judge from the Calendar. His besetting fault was pretty clearly that of over-inquisitiveness, possibly a good fault in a traveller, certainly a fault for which this traveller paid dearly enough in the end. On what proved to be his last expedition, he was plotting another book. Scandinavia, a region not widely known to Englishmen forty years ago, had struck him as an interesting field. He must have lighted on some old books of Swedish history or memoirs, and the idea had struck him that there was room for a book descriptive of travel in Sweden, interspersed with episodes from the history of some of the great Swedish families. He procured letters of introduction, therefore, to some persons of quality in Sweden, and set out thither in the early summer of 1863. Of his travels in the North there is no need to speak, nor of his residence of some weeks in Stockholm. I need only mention that some savant resident there put him on the track of an important collection of family papers belonging to the proprietors of an ancient manor-house in Vestergothland, and obtained for him permission to examine them. The manor-house, or herrgård, in question is to be called Råbäck (pronounced something like Roebeck), though that is not its name. It is one of the best buildings of its kind in all the country, and the picture of it in Dablenberg's Suecia antiqua et moderna, engraved in 1694, shows it very much as the tourist may see it to-day. It was built soon after 1600, and is, roughly speaking, very much like an English house of that period in respect of material—red-brick with stone facings—and style. The man who built it was a scion of the great house of De la Gardie, and his descendants possess it still. De la Gardie is the name by which I will designate them when mention of them becomes necessary. They received Mr. Wraxall with great kindness and courtesy, and pressed him to stay in the house as long as his researches lasted. But, preferring to be independent, and mistrusting his powers of conversing in Swedish, he settled himself at the village inn, which turned out quite sufficiently comfortable, at any rate during the summer months. This arrangement would entail a short walk daily to and from the manor-house of something under a mile. The house itself stood in a park, and was protected—we should say grown up—with large old timber. Near it you found the walled garden, and then entered a close wood fringing one of the small lakes with which the whole country is pitted. Then came the wall of the demesne, and you climbed a steep knoll—a knob of rock lightly covered with soil—and on the top of this stood the church, fenced in with tall dark trees. It was a curious building to English eyes. The nave and aisles were low, and filled with pews and galleries. In the western gallery stood the handsome old organ, gaily painted, and with silver pipes. The ceiling was flat, and had been adorned by a seventeenth-century artist with a strange and hideous "Last Judgment," full of lurid flames, falling cities, burning ships, crying souls, and brown and smiling demons. Handsome brass coronæ hung from the roof; the pulpit was like a doll's-house, covered with little painted wooden cherubs and saints; a stand with three hour-glasses was hinged to the preacher's desk. Such sights as these may be seen in many a church in Sweden now, but what distinguished this one was an addition to the original building. At the eastern end of the north aisle the builder of the manor-house had erected a mausoleum for himself and his family. It was a largish eight-sided building, lighted by a series of oval windows, and it had a domed roof, topped by a kind of pumpkin-shaped object rising into a spire, a form in which Swedish architects greatly delighted. The roof was of copper externally, and was painted black, while the walls, in common with those of the church, were staringly white. To this mausoleum there was no access from the church. It had a portal and steps of its own on the northern side. Past the churchyard the path to the village goes, and not more than three or four minutes bring you to the inn door. On the first day of his stay at Råbäck Mr. Wraxall found the church door open, and made those notes of the interior which I have epitomized. Into the mausoleum, however, he could not make his way. He could by looking through the keyhole just descry that there were fine marble effigies and sarcophagi of copper, and a wealth of armorial ornament, which made him very anxious to spend some time in investigation. The papers he had come to examine at the manor-house proved to be of just the kind he wanted for his book. There were family correspondence, journals, and account-books of the earliest owners of the estate, very carefully kept and clearly written, full of amusing and picturesque detail. The first De la Gardie appeared in them as a strong and capable man. Shortly after the building of the mansion there had been a period of distress in the district, and the peasants had risen and attacked several châteaux and done some damage. The owner of Råbäck took a leading part in suppressing the trouble, and there was reference to executions of ringleaders and severe punishments inflicted with no sparing hand. The portrait of this Magnus de la Gardie was one of the best in the house, and Mr. Wraxall studied it with no little interest after his day's work. He gives no detailed description of it, but I gather that the face impressed him rather by its power than by its beauty or goodness; in fact, he writes that Count Magnus was an almost phenomenally ugly man. On this day Mr. Wraxall took his supper with the family, and walked back in the late but still bright evening. "I must remember," he writes, "to ask the sexton if he can let me into the mausoleum at the church. He evidently has access to it himself, for I saw him to-night standing on the steps, and, as I thought, locking or unlocking the door." I find that early on the following day Mr. Wraxall had some conversation with his landlord. His setting it down at such length as he does surprised me at first; but I soon realized that the papers I was reading were, at least in their beginning, the materials for the book he was meditating, and that it was to have been one of those quasi-journalistic productions which admit of the introduction of an admixture of conversational matter. His object, he says, was to find out whether any traditions of Count Magnus de la Gardie lingered on in the scenes of that gentleman's activity, and whether the popular estimate of him were favourable or not. He found that the Count was decidedly not a favourite. If his tenants came late to their work on the days which they owed to him as Lord of the Manor, they were set on the wooden horse, or flogged and branded in the manor-house yard. One or two cases there were of men who had occupied lands which encroached on the lord's domain, and whose houses had been mysteriously burnt on a winter's night, with the whole family inside. But what seemed to dwell on the innkeeper's mind most—for he returned to the subject more than once—was that the Count had been on the Black Pilgrimage, and had brought something or someone back with him.
You will naturally inquire, as Mr. Wraxall did, what the Black Pilgrimage may have been. But your curiosity on the point must remain unsatisfied for the time being, just as his did. The landlord was evidently unwilling to give a full answer, or indeed any answer, on the point, and, being called out for a moment, trotted off with obvious alacrity, only putting his head in at the door a few minutes afterwards to say that he was called away to Skara, and should not be back till evening. So Mr. Wraxall had to go unsatisfied to his day's work at the manor-house. The papers on which he was just then engaged soon put his thoughts into another channel, for he had to occupy himself with glancing over the correspondence between Sophia Albertina in Stockholm and her married cousin Ulrica Leonora at Råbäck in the years 1705-1710. The letters were of exceptional interest from the light they threw upon the culture of that period in Sweden, as anyone can testify who has read the full edition of them in the publications of the Swedish Historical Manuscripts Commission. In the afternoon he had done with these, and after returning the boxes in which they were kept to their places on the shelf, he proceeded, very naturally, to take down some of the volumes nearest to them, in order to determine which of them had best be his principal subject of investigation next day. The shelf he had hit upon was occupied mostly by a collection of account-books in the writing of the first Count Magnus. But one among them was not an account-book, but a book of alchemical and other tracts in another sixteenth-century hand. Not being very familiar with alchemical literature, Mr. Wraxall spends much space which he might have spared in setting out the names and beginnings of the various treatises: The book of the Phœnix, book of the Thirty Words, book of the Toad, book of Miriam, Turba philosophorum, and so forth; and then he announces with a good deal of circumstance his delight at finding, on a leaf originally left blank near the middle of the book, some writing of Count Magnus himself headed "Liber nigræ peregrinationis." It is true that only a few lines were written, but there was quite enough to show that the landlord had that morning been referring to a belief at least as old as the time of Count Magnus, and probably shared by him. This is the English of what was written: "If any man desires to obtain a long life, if he would obtain a faithful messenger and see the blood of his enemies, it is necessary that he should first go into the city of Chorazin, and there salute the prince...." Here there was an erasure of one word, not very thoroughly done, so that Mr. Wraxall felt pretty sure that he was right in reading it as aëris ("of the air"). But there was no more of the text copied, only a line in Latin: "Quære reliqua hujus materiei inter secretiora" (See the rest of this matter among the more private things). It could not be denied that this threw a rather lurid light upon the tastes and beliefs of the Count; but to Mr. Wraxall, separated from him by nearly three centuries, the thought that he might have added to his general forcefulness alchemy, and to alchemy something like magic, only made him a more picturesque figure; and when, after a rather prolonged contemplation of his picture in the hall, Mr. Wraxall set out on his homeward way, his mind was full of the thought of Count Magnus. He had no eyes for his surroundings, no perception of the evening scents of the woods or the evening light on the lake; and when all of a sudden he pulled up short, he was astonished to find himself already at the gate of the churchyard, and within a few minutes of his dinner. His eyes fell on the mausoleum. "Ah," he said, "Count Magnus, there you are. I should dearly like to see you." "Like many solitary men," he writes, "I have a habit of talking to myself aloud; and, unlike some of the Greek and Latin particles, I do not expect an answer. Certainly, and perhaps fortunately in this case, there was neither voice nor any that regarded: only the woman who, I suppose, was cleaning up the church, dropped some metallic object on the floor, whose clang startled me. Count Magnus, I think, sleeps sound enough." That same evening the landlord of the inn, who had heard Mr. Wraxall say that he wished to see the clerk or deacon (as he would be called in Sweden) of the parish, introduced him to that official in the inn parlour. A visit to the De la Gardie tomb-house was soon arranged for the next day, and a little general conversation ensued. Mr. Wraxall, remembering that one function of Scandinavian deacons is to teach candidates for Confirmation, thought he would refresh his own memory on a Biblical point. "Can you tell me," he said, "anything about Chorazin?" The deacon seemed startled, but readily reminded him how that village had once been denounced. "To be sure," said Mr. Wraxall; "it is, I suppose, quite a ruin now?" "So I expect," replied the deacon. "I have heard some of our old priests say that Antichrist is to be born there; and there are tales——" "Ah! what tales are those?" Mr. Wraxall put in. "Tales, I was going to say, which I have forgotten," said the deacon; and soon after that he said good night. The landlord was now alone, and at Mr. Wraxall's mercy; and that inquirer was not inclined to spare him. "Herr Nielsen," he said, "I have found out something about the Black Pilgrimage. You may as well tell me what you know. What did the Count bring back with him?" Swedes are habitually slow, perhaps, in answering, or perhaps the landlord was an exception. I am not sure; but Mr. Wraxall notes that the landlord spent at least one minute in looking at him before he said anything at all. Then he came close up to his guest, and with a good deal of effort he spoke: "Mr. Wraxall, I can tell you this one little tale, and no more—not any more. You must not ask anything when I have done. In my grandfather's time—that is, ninety-two years ago—there were two men who said: 'The Count is dead; we do not care for him. We will go to-night and have a free hunt in his wood'—the long wood on the hill that you have seen behind Råbäck. Well, those that heard them say this, they said: 'No, do not go; we are sure you will meet with persons walking who should not be walking. They should be resting, not walking.' These men laughed. There were no forest-men to keep the wood, because no one wished to hunt there. The family were not here at the house. These men could do what they wished. "Very well, they go to the wood that night. My grandfather was sitting here in this room. It was the summer, and a light night. With the window open, he could see out to the wood, and hear. "So he sat there, and two or three men with him, and they listened. At first they hear nothing at all; then they hear someone—you know how far away it is—they hear someone scream, just as if the most inside part of his soul was twisted out of him. All of them in the room caught hold of each other, and they sat so for three-quarters of an hour. Then they hear someone else, only about three hundred ells off. They hear him laugh out loud: it was not one of those two men that laughed, and, indeed, they have all of them said that it was not any man at all. After that they hear a great door shut. "Then, when it was just light with the sun, they all went to the priest. They said to him: "'Father, put on your gown and your ruff, and come to bury these men, Anders Bjornsen and Hans Thorbjorn.' "You understand that they were sure these men were dead. So they went to the wood—my grandfather never forgot this. He said they were all like so many dead men themselves. The priest, too, he was in a white fear. He said when they came to him: "'I heard one cry in the night, and I heard one laugh afterwards. If I cannot forget that, I shall not be able to sleep again.' "So they went to the wood, and they found these men on the edge of the wood. Hans Thorbjorn was standing with his back against a tree, and all the time he was pushing with his hands—pushing something away from him which was not there. So he was not dead. And they led him away, and took him to the house at Nykjoping, and he died before the winter; but he went on pushing with his hands. Also Anders Bjornsen was there; but he was dead. And I tell you this about Anders Bjornsen, that he was once a beautiful man, but now his face was not there, because the flesh of it was sucked away off the bones. You understand that? My grandfather did not forget that. And they laid him on the bier which they brought, and they put a cloth over his head, and the priest walked before; and they began to sing the psalm for the dead as well as they could. So, as they were singing the end of the first verse, one fell down, who was carrying the head of the bier, and the others looked back, and they saw that the cloth had fallen off, and the eyes of Anders Bjornsen were looking up, because there was nothing to close over them. And this they could not bear. Therefore the priest laid the cloth upon him, and sent for a spade, and they buried him in that place." The next day Mr. Wraxall records that the deacon called for him soon after his breakfast, and took him to the church and mausoleum. He noticed that the key of the latter was hung on a nail just by the pulpit, and it occurred to him that, as the church door seemed to be left unlocked as a rule, it would not be difficult for him to pay a second and more private visit to the monuments if there proved to be more of interest among them than could be digested at first. The building, when he entered it, he found not unimposing. The monuments, mostly large erections of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, were dignified if luxuriant, and the epitaphs and heraldry were copious. The central space of the domed room was occupied by three copper sarcophagi, covered with finely-engraved ornament. Two of them had, as is commonly the case in Denmark and Sweden, a large metal crucifix on the lid. The third, that of Count Magnus, as it appeared, had, instead of that, a full-length effigy engraved upon it, and round the edge were several bands of similar ornament representing various scenes. One was a battle, with cannon belching out smoke, and walled towns, and troops of pikemen. Another showed an execution. In a third, among trees, was a man running at full speed, with flying hair and outstretched hands. After him followed a strange form; it would be hard to say whether the artist had intended it for a man, and was unable to give the requisite similitude, or whether it was intentionally made as monstrous as it looked. In view of the skill with which the rest of the drawing was done, Mr. Wraxall felt inclined to adopt the latter idea. The figure was unduly short, and was for the most part muffled in a hooded garment which swept the ground. The only part of the form which projected from that shelter was not shaped like any hand or arm. Mr. Wraxall compares it to the tentacle of a devil-fish, and continues: "On seeing this, I said to myself, 'This, then, which is evidently an allegorical representation of some kind—a fiend pursuing a hunted soul—may be the origin of the story of Count Magnus and his mysterious companion. Let us see how the huntsman is pictured: doubtless it will be a demon blowing his horn.'" But, as it turned out, there was no such sensational figure, only the semblance of a cloaked man on a hillock, who stood leaning on a stick, and watching the hunt with an interest which the engraver had tried to express in his attitude. Mr. Wraxall noted the finely-worked and massive steel padlocks—three in number—which secured the sarcophagus. One of them, he saw, was detached, and lay on the pavement. And then, unwilling to delay the deacon longer or to waste his own working-time, he made his way onward to the manor-house. It is curious," he notes, "how on retracing a familiar path one's thoughts engross one to the absolute exclusion of surrounding objects. To-night, for the second time, I had entirely failed to notice where I was going (I had planned a private visit to the tomb-house to copy the epitaphs), when I suddenly, as it were, awoke to consciousness, and found myself (as before) turning in at the churchyard gate, and, I believe, singing or chanting some such words as, 'Are you awake, Count Magnus? Are you asleep, Count Magnus?' and then something more which I have failed to recollect. It seemed to me that I must have been behaving in this nonsensical way for some time." He found the key of the mausoleum where he had expected to find it, and copied the greater part of what he wanted; in fact, he stayed until the light began to fail him. "I must have been wrong," he writes, "in saying that one of the padlocks of my Count's sarcophagus was unfastened; I see to-night that two are loose. I picked both up, and laid them carefully on the window-ledge, after trying unsuccessfully to close them. The remaining one is still firm, and, though I take it to be a spring lock, I cannot guess how it is opened. Had I succeeded in undoing it, I am almost afraid I should have taken the liberty of opening the sarcophagus. It is strange, the interest I feel in the personality of this, I fear, somewhat ferocious and grim old noble." The day following was, as it turned out, the last of Mr. Wraxall's stay at Råbäck. He received letters connected with certain investments which made it desirable that he should return to England; his work among the papers was practically done, and travelling was slow. He decided, therefore, to make his farewells, put some finishing touches to his notes, and be off. These finishing touches and farewells, as it turned out, took more time than he had expected. The hospitable family insisted on his staying to dine with them—they dined at three—and it was verging on half-past six before he was outside the iron gates of Råbäck. He dwelt on every step of his walk by the lake, determined to saturate himself, now that he trod it for the last time, in the sentiment of the place and hour. And when he reached the summit of the churchyard knoll, he lingered for many minutes, gazing at the limitless prospect of woods near and distant, all dark beneath a sky of liquid green. When at last he turned to go, the thought struck him that surely he must bid farewell to Count Magnus as well as the rest of the De la Gardies. The church was but twenty yards away, and he knew where the key of the mausoleum hung. It was not long before he was standing over the great copper coffin, and, as usual, talking to himself aloud. "You may have been a bit of a rascal in your time, Magnus," he was saying, "but for all that I should like to see you, or, rather——" "Just at that instant," he says, "I felt a blow on my foot. Hastily enough I drew it back, and something fell on the pavement with a clash. It was the third, the last of the three padlocks which had fastened the sarcophagus. I stooped to pick it up, and—Heaven is my witness that I am writing only the bare truth—before I had raised myself there was a sound of metal hinges creaking, and I distinctly saw the lid shifting upwards. I may have behaved like a coward, but I could not for my life stay for one moment. I was outside that dreadful building in less time than I can write—almost as quickly as I could have said—the words; and what frightens me yet more, I could not turn the key in the lock. As I sit here in my room noting these facts, I ask myself (it was not twenty minutes ago) whether that noise of creaking metal continued, and I cannot tell whether it did or not. I only know that there was something more than I have written that alarmed me, but whether it was sound or sight I am not able to remember. What is this that I have done?" Poor Mr. Wraxall! He set out on his journey to England on the next day, as he had planned, and he reached England in safety; and yet, as I gather from his changed hand and inconsequent jottings, a broken man. One of several small notebooks that have come to me with his papers gives, not a key to, but a kind of inkling of, his experiences. Much of his journey was made by canal-boat, and I find not less than six painful attempts to enumerate and describe his fellow-passengers. The entries are of this kind: "24. Pastor of village in Skåne. Usual black coat and soft black hat. "25. Commercial traveller from Stockholm going to Trollhättan. Black cloak, brown hat. "26. Man in long black cloak, broad-leafed hat, very old-fashioned." This entry is lined out, and a note added: "Perhaps identical with No. 13. Have not yet seen his face." On referring to No. 13, I find that he is a Roman priest in a cassock. The net result of the reckoning is always the same. Twenty-eight people appear in the enumeration, one being always a man in a long black cloak and broad hat, and the other a "short figure in dark cloak and hood." On the other hand, it is always noted that only twenty-six passengers appear at meals, and that the man in the cloak is perhaps absent, and the short figure is certainly absent. On reaching England, it appears that Mr. Wraxall landed at Harwich, and that he resolved at once to put himself out of the reach of some person or persons whom he never specifies, but whom he had evidently come to regard as his pursuers. Accordingly he took a vehicle—it was a closed fly—not trusting the railway, and drove across country to the village of Belchamp St. Paul. It was about nine o'clock on a moonlight August night when he neared the place. He was sitting forward, and looking out of the window at the fields and thickets—there was little else to be seen—racing past him. Suddenly he came to a cross-road. At the corner two figures were standing motionless; both were in dark cloaks; the taller one wore a hat, the shorter a hood. He had no time to see their faces, nor did they make any motion that he could discern. Yet the horse shied violently and broke into a gallop, and Mr. Wraxall sank back into his seat in something like desperation. He had seen them before. Arrived at Belchamp St. Paul, he was fortunate enough to find a decent furnished lodging, and for the next twenty-four hours he lived, comparatively speaking, in peace. His last notes were written on this day. They are too disjointed and ejaculatory to be given here in full, but the substance of them is clear enough. He is expecting a visit from his pursuers—how or when he knows not—and his constant cry is "What has he done?" and "Is there no hope?" Doctors, he knows, would call him mad, policemen would laugh at him. The parson is away. What can he do but lock his door and cry to God? People still remembered last year at Belchamp St. Paul how a strange gentleman came one evening in August years back; and how the next morning but one he was found dead, and there was an inquest; and the jury that viewed the body fainted, seven of 'em did, and none of 'em wouldn't speak to what they see, and the verdict was visitation of God; and how the people as kep' the 'ouse moved out that same week, and went away from that part. But they do not, I think, know that any glimmer of light has ever been thrown, or could be thrown, on the mystery. It so happened that last year the little house came into my hands as part of a legacy. It had stood empty since 1863, and there seemed no prospect of letting it; so I had it pulled down, and the papers of which I have given you an abstract were found in a forgotten cupboard under the window in the best bedroom.

2024.05.13 05:38 user101604371 if you're considering Science One...

Disclaimer: This post is merely to provide knowledge, and not to instruct you to do anything. Your choice whether to choose the Science One program at UBC or not is completely up to you. I hope this helps in making an informed decision.
I just thought I would contribute to the existing public knowledge of the Science One program already on Reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/UBC/comments/ec95t4/for_anyone_interested_in_science_one/ My post assumes you already did basic research on the program and aims to contribute more knowledge that isn’t publicly available yet (here is the Science One website: https://scienceone.ubc.ca)
I am an alumni in the 2023-2024 cohort, but just a disclaimer that a few things will change in the program in the years to come (see below):
Just a few small updates to the previous Reddit post:
Note about grades: While Science One is promoted as a program where the students care more about knowledge than grades, while this is very true in my personal experience, I still think that grades played a large impact on our mental health, confidence, and our overall enjoyability of the first year experience. The reason I am including grades here is to allow you to have reasonable expectations about your grades and know that if you want to go into a very competitive specialization in second year, Science One may not be the right program for you. Note that the grades published on UBC grades (https://ubcgrades.com) is not representative of the actual class average. There is a policy where if a student failed two or more subjects in Science One, the credit for Science One will be broken down into its individual course components and the student will not appear to have been in Science One (it doesn’t show Science One on their transcript, rather the rough course equivalents). This raises the apparent class average reported. In my year, 3 people were removed, which changed the class average from 75% to 77%.
Alright, with that out of the way, I will be filling in the gaps of public knowledge specifically with the workload of Science One. Below is a (hopefully) unbiased perspective on Science One. My personal opinion will be stated later in this post.

Summary
With that in mind, I want to provide some pros and cons of Science One:
Pros
Cons
Personal Opinion
While I did enjoy Science One at the start of the school year because of the pros mentioned above, over the school year, I started taking an interest in a competitive major, which put a lot of stress on myself to achieve high marks. It almost felt like no matter how hard I tried and how well I thought I knew the topic, my mark was going to be low anyways because the way the content is tested. I feel like I shot myself in the foot when it comes to getting into my major as the application process is completely based on grades.
While I don’t know if I would have done better in mainstream (I probably wouldn’t have had as many friends, and therefore my mental health would be worse, and possibly it means that I don’t have as much motivation), I definitely think that I could have done better in mainstream if I had the same motivation I do now as their way of testing and marking may be a lot more lenient. However, I am almost certainly sure that if my cohort were placed into mainstream classes in first year, we would have achieved much higher grades than we did in Science One. However, I don’t know if being in Science One could have an effect on my performance in the years to come. I do acknowledge that over the year, I was able to develop really good study habits to manage the workload and also learned to prioritize my health, which will be beneficial in the future.
However, I have also noticed that there are some “hell weeks”, where we absolutely feel like dropping out. In both terms, after term 1 and 2 conferences, where we were away at camp for the weekend (we didn’t have the weekend to do schoolwork), there was a week where there were many overlapping assessments, such as math midterms, chemistry quizzes, math assignments, and chemistry assignments, etc. These are the assessments that ended up having class averages which were below expectations, which I feel wasn’t our fault at all.
In fact, we were burnt out, but because of our wonderful Student Council, we were able to have some assignments pushed back to alleviate some of our workload and reduce burnout. Special thanks to our chemistry professors, as they were always open to planning the chemistry quizzes on days that weren’t as bad for us, and even asked us which day we wanted the quizzes. I can tell they really care about our wellbeing and our performance.
In addition, even though Science One is marketed as being prestigious, most of the people I talk to don’t even know what Science One is, and the few who do know it, know it for its intensive nature and harsh marking scheme. There is no special treatment for Science One graduates that I know of except for the occasional “wow how did you survive?”.
Generally, I don’t regret doing Science One, but if I had the chance to restart first year, I would have chosen to go the mainstream route. I feel I would have been a lot less stressed and have gotten much better grades. However, I did meet so many motivated and amazing people this year, and have generally enjoyed some aspects such as camp. Unfortunately, because of my desired major, I have seen Science One as something that may have limited my options in the future.
Do I think Science One is for you?
These are my personal opinions and please don’t take this section as the final decider for you. Be sure to do more research!
To succeed in Science One, talent can only go so far. At some point you will be challenged academically, and you will doubt yourself. But what follow is what really determines if you are a good fit for Science One. If you want to give up and do something easier, go to mainstream. If you want to persevere and to learn more, Science One may be the right choice for you. If just you want the prestige of Science One, don’t do Science One, it is not as well known as their website may make it seem. If you want to go into Computer Science, Science One may not be for you since it has little connection to Computer Science and really lowers your mark.
If you really are hard set on a competitive major which requires high marks, consider mainstream, since it is very rare and very very difficult to do well in Science One. If you really love to learn more difficult concepts, have a tight community to be by your side, to have good connections to your professors, to get some research experience, AND grades aren’t a huge concern for you, Science One is for you.
Again, take my opinion with a grain of salt. You are ultimately the right person who can make the right choice for yourself. You know yourself the best. I hope this helped and I wish you all the very best in your studies, whether you decide to go Science One or not. Feel free to DM me or reply below if you have any further questions :)

2024.05.13 04:20 BucketListLifer Need input on public CA online schools

My son is a rising 8th grader in a very highly rated public school district in Bay Area. He does nothing in school where the teachers don't give him any attention. He is hyper social and gets too distracted by other kids. At home, he does well with an online tutor in a 1x1 format. Currently, he is on the most accelerated track the school offers - accelerated Math and Science and Language honors. He plans to do double acceleration in math in high school and take STEM APs in sophomore/junior year. However, ALL his learning is done at home - even his classwork is done "late" under parental supervision at home. We keep his grades up with very diligent work at home through parents and tutors.
I am immuno-compromised and I fall sick very often with the bugs he brings home and I am wondering if this is worth it. If all his learning comes from his tutors and parents, can we do the schooling online? Can they provide the acceleration he needs in online public school? With online he can finish up his work quickly (parents can keep an eye on him at home) and frees up time music drama etc. His goal is do STEM in a UC - this is competitive for an Asian kid. Can he achieve his goals though an online public school?

The Good
  • 7/10 - Good: Episodes I like
  • 8/10 - Great: Episodes I really like
  • 9/10 - Amazing: Episodes I love
  • 10/10 - The Best: Episodes I adore
Episode Ranking (From best to worst):
  1. Krusty Towers - 8/10: Great story and premise, great characterisation, funniest episode of the season, the Faulty Towers reference is just a plus
  2. The Lost Mattress - 8/10: Probably the last time the Squidward, SpongeBob and Patrick dynamic was done this well
  3. Fear of a Krabby Patty - 8/10: With great laughs and a good premise this is peak season opener
  4. Krabs VS Plankton - 7/10: Courtroom shenanigans and a great solution to the problem, I like it
  5. Have You Seen This Snail? - 7/10: The most dramatic SpongeBob episode, and yet it somehow works
  6. Best Frenemies - 7/10: Mr Krabs and Plankton working together is a great concept and this episode executes it really well
  7. Wishing You Well - 7/10: Suprised by how much I like this one
  8. Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture - 7/10: The most underrated MM&BB episode
  9. Skill Crane - 7/10: We all can relate to Squid's struggle in this one
  10. Dunces & Dragons - 7/10: SpongeBob in medieval times could be more epic but it's far from mediocre
  11. The Pink Purloiner - 7/10: A good SpongeBob and Patrick-focused story, in fact, the only good one this season
  12. Mrs. Puff, You're Fired - 7/10: The General character is one of the funnier one-off characters this season
  13. Shell of a Man - 7/10: Didn't find it too funny but it was still a good watch
  14. Bummer Vacation - 6/10: Not in love with this one but at least it's decently funny enough to be enjoyable
  15. Squidtastic Voyage - 6/10: I liked this one but I hate how Patrick is the cause of most of the episode's conflict
  16. Ghost Host - 6/10: I like the creepy visuals and story, but I thought it could've been funnier
  17. Hocus Pocus - 6/10: From the reveal already being revealed to the Wizard of Oz reference, this episode is strange yet decent
  18. That's No Lady - 6/10: This one has definitely aged, but I still think the concept and story are decent enough
  19. SquidBob TentaclePants - 6/10: I like the Sci-fi motif, but this episode is just more weird than funny
  20. Patrick SmartPants - 6/10: Patrick becoming smart is a concept I like but I feel this episode needed more laughs (notice a pattern)
  21. Driven to Tears - 6/10: Patrick getting something over SpongeBob and Sponge being jealous is a decent concept, leading to a decent episode
  22. Once Bitten - 5/10: Patrick acts like a smart alec and the episode doesn't have much in terms of humour, except for maybe one or two moments
  23. Karate Island - 5/10: I like the twist that the island was an insurance scam, but I think it needed more karate scenes and less SpongeBob being a twit
  24. Selling Out - 5/10: If this episode was funnier and didn't have a stupid ending joke, I would've liked it more
  25. Enemy in Law - 5/10: Okay story but isn't funny enough to at least be memorable
  26. Chimps Ahoy - 5/10: I only really like the screaming nut and Pat's reflection, everything else just makes me want to watch 'Texas' again
  27. The Gift of Gum - 5/10: Basic premise but not an awful execution, though that gum ball is gross
  28. Born to be Wild - 5/10: Not even the one or two good jokes can save how underwhelming this plot is
  29. Funny Pants - 5/10: Most of this episode is fine, but why did they add a squeaky sound to SpongeBob's laugh?
  30. Whale of a Birthday - 5/10: Mr Krabs being a cheap parent is not a very funny concept for an episode, and the actual episode is proof of why
  31. The Thing - 5/10: This is the more tolerable of the two main Neighbour Trio episodes this season in my opinion
  32. New Leaf - 5/10: The twist is so blatantly obvious I question why they even bothered.
  33. Best Day Ever - 4/10: I like the song, but everything else is a bore
  34. Wigstruck - 4/10: The concept is classic SpongeBob but the execution leaves a lot to be desired
  35. All That Glitters - 3/10: Not very funny and not even a good story to boost it up a little
  36. Squid Wood - 3/10: Squidward getting upstaged by a puppet should be funny but I find this one more annoying than fun
  37. Rule of Dumb - 3/10: Patrick being a jerkish ruler is not a fun concept, nor does it lead to a good episode
  38. Good Neighbours - 2/10: How do we go from the peak of the Neighbour trio episodes from last season to the worst episode of the show so far?
Season Overall - 5/10: Season 4 still has elements of what made the previous seasons so good, but with few truly funny episodes and more episodes that miss the mark thank Seasons 1,2 and 3, I find it overall underwhelming.

2024.05.13 00:45 Okay_Result Koreans, did I get my facts straight about Korea? She's supposed to live in Busan.

Carol Frye
Fiction Workshop
Apr 19, 2024
My Escape
Yes this is a serious plot, anime fans. We are in a literary fiction class, it will be original
Chapter 1
Trigger Warning: Suicidal Ideation
Seoyeon wanted to faint, or get sick, or randomly fall into a coma. It was a familiar feeling. She sat at the blindingly bright cram school . This entire life felt like a prison in the darkening day. And in this moment of her life her cell was the rows and rows of desks that lie next to each other and pale beige walls. But she, like most prisoners, didn’t want to die. She couldn’t blame those who did.
She just wished that she lived in any other rich country. Sometimes, she daydreamed about swimming from the Busan harbor to the relaxing sunny beaches of California or Washington state. She still remembered going to In N’ Out, the fries, the burger, the “audacious” kids not studying at 8pm on a wednesday. Instead they were sitting down, talking, using their phones, while sitting on tables veiled by umbrellas, while the sun set. She was annoyed by how little international travel she did. Sometimes the In N’ Out felt more real than the cram school. But usually the cram school felt more real than the In N’ Out.
“Seoyeon. You have to be studying right now.” The teacher said in his usual sharp and slightly heavy voice.
Stupid fucking cram school.
Stupid fucking cram teacher. These words always played in her mind while here.
But she did her work, getting distracted or doodling every few minutes. And she anticipated, always anticipated the next class on the bullshit schedule she did every day, counting down the moments until she could leave. The sunset was a good marker that she was in the home stretch. Thursday were the worst kinds of days because they were the days where all of her cram schools were done. Her parents budgeted a little by buying more sessions in what she was bad at. She was good at english, and math, but she simply couldn’t understand biology or especially Korean. She liked rules, Math had rules, and so did English. The rules of english are irrational, and the language contains truckloads of irritating surprises in terms of pronunciation. And sometimes the rules weren’t even always consistent. No, it must have been her history of learning languages. She might’ve liked Korean, but all that was done was boring shitty depressing books. And it would be mediocre if it weren’t for the fact that she had no idea how to intercept the text. It all had to be cookie cutter. English was the last of this class marathon of walking for cram school to cram school over and over again.
That was what she was thinking in the middle of the cold night, walking to the bus home. Only the bright as hell city lights and consumerist billboard guided her. Nobody bothered to place street lights. The weather changed significantly from day to night. The jean jacket that was good enough with her t-shirt in the morning now made her cold. Slowly, the nights were coming early and the prison got darker. She was annoyed by this a s it reminder her of the time she had to fucking waste. She didn’t usually think about this sort of thing at all. Rather she chose to rebel by thinking about new metas in games, and new tv shows (That aren’t stupid K-dramas. She didn’t want to admit she liked those.). People said that she was strapped to her favorite MMOs but she saw it as freedom. A lovely beautiful simple world where she could do so, so much more than study. She could be an adventurer, a hero even. She heard of hikikomori in Japan, people who leech off of their parents and stay at home. She couldn’t allow herself to leech off her parents. She would not leech off her mom, Haeun and especially not her Dad, Doyun, who already couldn’t speak and had a hell of a bad time with his shitty job. And as much as she didn’t want to admit it, she felt like she had to work. Instead hoped that one day she could just get an apartment of her own and live alone being a hero forever. Forget this stupid work culture. Either way she has never had more than six hours of sleep. After all, as the stupid saying goes, you’ll only get into a college if you have less than four hours of sleep. Isn’t that what they want? Seoyeon hoped that her father knew deep down that this was her escape, or that Mom wanted her sufficiently sleep-deprived and this was the way to do that.
At home she she open the door to her living room/dining room which consisted of a dirty white hard couch and cyan pillows. The table was large and glass. Doyun peaked out from the side of the TV. It was the placer where another parent might have called Soyun, but he couldn’t speak or even yell if she tried. He signed “Hello, you better have done your cram school. We will now do homework”
Seoyun walked into the skinny kitchen which was a hallway reaching towards the left. Doyun sat at the far end. She sat on her chair at her desk next to Doyun. She had to do some normal distributions. God, what’s the point in that?
She had to be at least 2.5 standard deviations lower than most people in terms of time saying Korean per day. For one, she learned sign language before Korean, her dad was mute and could only model that language for him and Haeun played a minimal role in her development. His boss never learned sign language and his wife only learned a few signs. They instead preferred to speak to him through a method that he could understand but couldn’t respond in. But he was mute, and her Mom, Haeun, and therefore only played a minor role as a parent, couldn’t even be there to model speech. It was only with instruction from her (at 3!) that she learned to articulate the words in the language she already learned to read (also at 3, she was smarter than average). But out of habit, she always kept signing to her dad. But don’t get it wrong, she felt grateful for being capable of speech. How the heck else was she going to complain?
She didn’t want to be like her dad, who was, by necessity, quiet and small. Doyun, the polite factory worker. The perfect factory worker, who could never respond, only listen and obey. Doyun, who wanted to sign reassurances to his coworkers about how everything’s fine, and to not listen to the colored remarks of his boss, but none of them know KSL. She was certain that Doyun must’ve accepted that he had to go with the flow, and that was why he was the way he was. Even his wife didn’t bother to learn more than a few signs. She much preferred to speak in a method where he could only listen and not respond. She pitied her dad’s lack of vocal cords. And she was not planning on living the way her dad made her live, but she did not want dad to feel the pain of struggling against her currents.

After yet more assignments, a long night of playing SohanWorld with her (male) American friend Gorgen was due. She had to use VPNs to contact the server but that was a microscopic price for being able to play past midnight, and avoid the stupid server curfew.
Gorgen So I found some side hustles where u don’t have to leave home
Neenok Cool
Gorgen You’re so good at this game and overwatch. IDK why u don’t want to play competitively
Neenok I hate this place. I say that over and over.
Gorgen I know. But isn’t gaming fun? I thought u hated the educational system. lol
Neenok You don’t know how competitive gaming is. I am good but I hate spending 6-12 hours of my life in any pressure place.
Gorgen It is “place with pressure” lol. (Seoyeon was mildly annoyed by that) Anyway gonna answer questions randomly on the test or what? It’s coming up in 8 days.
Neenok My dad would know if I did, because I would get about a 25%. Some questions are not A, B, C, and D, you have to write them out. Yes it is coming out in 8 days.
Gorgen Just get 60% of the questions wrong or something.
Neenok can’t
Gorgen why
...
Gorgen why
Neenok I don’t want to put in the effort into answering the questions
Gorgen lol u really that lazy
Neenok I’m not I just can’t have them win. Can have them force me to do this.
Neenok Oh no! Oh no I’m on a server.
Seoyeon would’ve said oh god if her limited english allowed it. Language skills weren’t really valued her.s
Gorgen I’m one of the few english players and the only reason im here is that I bribe the compsci teacher with snacks LMAO. What time is it in korea
Neenok 1:30Am we are not even supposed to play games at this time
Gorgen literally 1984
Neenok You always say that
Neenok let me tell you something.
Neenok I want to prove them wrong so bad. I hate this place I hate the pressure and I want to prove that I don’t need it. That is why I am not doing e sports
Gorgen Damn
Neenok What do you mean?
Gorgen I can’t believe ur determined like that. TBH, if I were like that I would deny capitalism.
Neenok but the US is great. What is bad about the US?
Gorgen FFS we don’t have universal healthcare. My dad is getting sick and we are in a money crunch rn.
Gorgen Our government is corrupt lol. So much corporate bullshit in the government. Both parties are the corporate party.
Seoyeon You have no clue what corrupt means!
Seoyeon shut the computer off because she didn’t want his slander of what she felt was a distant, pure, milk and honey land. She knew she couldn’t come back there. It was all much less pressure. While trying to sleep, she remembered the level up system for spells 1, then 1+2=3, then 3+3=6. She thought that would try to succeed on those questions. Then for each number after those, she would try to fail. Otherwise, she would just make a rough guess.
She wrote down this great idea
Well, she thought, didn’t need his help to screw up the test anyway.
⭑◉⭑
The next day, Seoyeon’s Mom, Haeun came from her business trip in the Philippines. Seoyeon’s notebook was left open and moved into the living room. Seoyeon knew that Haeun wanted to talk with her. So she herself must've made a mistake. Seoyeon had drawn her ideal single room apartment where she made no contact with anyone on the right page, and on the left was a note on how to fail the CSAT. For Seoyeon it was her escape plan as a prisoner of this stupid society. A bundle of hope. But her Haeun wanted to play stool pigeon.
“You really decided to be this lazy.” She looked like she didn’t care. “Well, I want you to succeed” Haeun said this if she was told that this was the automatic thing you were supposed to say in response.
“Don’t tell dad about this-”
“You will not be a parasite” She interrupted “I will tell him because I’m tried of him being such a-
“I'll do the right thing! I'll do the right thing! Sometimes. I make things up.” She rushed to say.
“Why would you even dream about this thing? Why would you care show god damn much about burdening us”
“Burdening! I don’t want to live with you! I just don’t want to do anything!”
“I thought you said you would do the right thing. And why do you like making yourself so pathetic.”
“No I’m not. No I’m not.”
“Then why are you doing it?”
“I DON’T WANT TO BE A PARASITE! I JUST WANT TO REBEL AGAINST THE CULTURE OF THIS STUPID COUNTRY! I WANT TO PROVE THAT I DON’T WANT TO BE FORCED TO DO THIS SHIT.”
“You don’t understand where I came from. Let me explain something.” Seoyeon sat down.
“I didn’t want to marry your father but I had to. He was in love with me. I didn’t care for him but he was better than my other suitors. You were an accident. We weren’t planning on having any children but my parents were against abortioning you. I wish I could but I didn’t.” Haeun stood up, walked a bit closer and leaned in. “Sometimes… You have to go with the rules. If you love your parents that time will be know”
Seoyeon was floored. She always hoped, really hoped that Haeun secretly loved her and her Dad, that like other fictional parents, she was just busy. But she was never there, and she was never aware.
And all she could say after 2 minutes, faintly, was “fake.”
“You call me fake?” Haeun cornered Seoyeon as she was about to leave
“FAKE! All of this love was fake!”
Doyun ran into the room, and, after a bit of hesitation, peeled off her Haeun’from the wall.
“I read her notebook and noticed that she wanted to go be lazy and screw up her test”
Doyun looked angry and held her head within his hands, turning it towards him.
He grabbed her head gently but firmly from above and signed “Seoyeon, I need you to succeed. I know the future is scary but it is gonna be alright.”
“Yeah, as I said it's only a fantasy.” she said.
Haeun looked in the notebook and flipped some pages back. “You were taking it seriously!”
Doyun signs backed her up “Seoyeon, you will not do that.”
“You've always been too soft” Haeun said to Doyun “and, Seoyeon, you are a spoiled piece of shit. If I were like you I would've left all of you. But I am responsible. I will never ever allow you to fulfill any of your fantasies, not even if you decide not to be a parasite on this family. I expect you to listen to society.”
Seoyeon just ran. His dad tried to come after her. She sprinted and got onto a bus without him.
⭑◉⭑
She ran off the bus a few stops later. She felt crazy and wanted the decision to be reversable. God, her mom hated her. She knew now that she could never obey. She was tired, and walked into some random park of plaza will benches. People walked all around her. The park was at sunset. (She had more time on Friday because she didn’t go to math and english during this time.) She then looked at the annoying, evil sign outside the cram school. “If not now, then when?” Such a stupid ideogly. An ideogly invented by the cram schools invented by everyone fuck over every high schooler in korea. And Samsung loved it, her Dad was brainwashed by it, and her Mom only cared about her following it. Was cram school seriously time sensitive shit? From their perspective it was. It was necessary, essential for any life goals. Life goals like mine. The sunset started reminding her of the landmark she used time and time agains to mark the home stretch of this school after school. Escape: If not now, then when? If today wasn’t the day to be free how much longer will I have to wait? How will Mom trying to stop this dream, this escape? Will I be able to succeed at that point?
A person brushed past her and broke her out of her trance. She spent the rest of the day wandering around until it was midnight dark. There were no consumerist billboards or street lamps so she couldn’t see a thing. She got tired eventually and sat down on a bench. She took out her phone. She was in such a daze that she had forgotten her phone existed until now. She saw a sign with the same stupid message as when she started. I guess this slogan is popular …and effective. She felt so much calmer. Outside was a little bubble tea stand. Some teenagers and a lone hairy skinny fat adult sat outside of the bubble tea stand. The stand emitted bright white-yellow light that vaguely illuminated. She could she simple white house with a frames in different colors red, green and blue. She wished she lived there.
The stand reminded her of the bubble tea shop she went to with her weekend job money. Her crush Wook was often there. She would ask out wook, if she didn’t believe that she was a shitty girlfriend. She didn’t care about her looks and was under no delusion that she looked beautiful. Her hair was straight and tangled and while it wasn’t gray or anything it gave off the feeling of having aged like an old dusty school chair from lack of grooming. She had a skin tone resembling a lighter shade of the skin of almonds, and two clouds of freckles in formations around two sagging phone lines propped up between cheekbones and lips on each side. She never wanted to go outside, and had shitty hobbies that she thought no boy would be interested in. She didn’t have the emotional energy to even try to return affection and while she could articulate she knew it as the reason she was a bad girlfriend. So she ignored him.
She looked around for some way to escape but she didn’t know how. So impulsive, and at first solemnly, she got onto the bridge. The houses were still clearer now. Each one having gardens and quiet dark streets. She sees a factory and an industiial distort downstream coated in brown and gray. There no fucking way to ecapse. I’ll be fucked up I’m a orphan at this point I’m a orphan at this point. She looked down in the water.
You shouldn’t do this! This is stupid. You shouldn’t die!
It’s okay. It's just dark. You would even see the river just jump.
A great debate raged in her mind between common sence, because her will to live and general reluctance to die and her want to espcae, the voice inside her head saying: “There’s no other way, how else can we leave?” and “if not now, then when?”
She leaned on the bridge then stopped herself. And stared for a moment. She heard frantic footsteps.
It was her dad, and his face said it all. He knew what was going on.
What in the actual fuck has gotten into me?
He signed “I’m sorry”
She signed “Dad, Mom said that she doesn’t love you. She said that it was a mistake”
He signed “Is that why you did it?”
She yelled: “Don’t blame yourself! Please don’t blame yourself! I was just looking at the river… Don’t blame Mom either…”
Doyun chased Seoyeon.
See, you are a spoiled brat. You just fished for sympathy.
You bitch, now you should fall in there.
Just escape. He has so much on fucking mind. He has to go to sleep at 9:00 pm everyday and the only reason why he doesn’t sleep at 8 is because of you.
Everything you do is so contradictory. You want to be free so how about you just jump the fuck in.
The water splashed. Seoyeon had already gotten off the bridge but she didn't know how to swim very well. Doyun couldn't swim at all and just wade-ran at the edge of the river. Good. Just steadily swim towards the center of the river. At some point he'll stop trying to get me.
She wasn’t scared but her body was. She squeezed her eyes closed. She just tried to get through the river to go with the flow and try to swim slightly faster in case her Dad was crazy enough to follow her.
She came to check if everything was ok. She looked back seeing if Dad was around. She felt like she was about to die of hypothermia. She saw her Dad in a lifeboat. Right then she knew that she deserved nothing.
Contrary to her survival instinct, her eyes began to blur with tears.
She said, and signed “I love I just want to leave I want to escape” hoping that his eyes or ears would perceive it.
Someone pulled her from the waters. Or at least she assumed. She was in some kind of gray room but she couldn’t tell because her vision was so blurry. The woman looked off and inhuman, not really it an uncanny valley kind of way. Her voice sounded like an angelic version of a robot voice but not in a voice that seemed unnatural.
“I have a deal for you Seoyeon. I know how much you want to escape.”

2024.05.12 13:27 zenjaha My Winning Renegade Platinum Hardcore Nuzlocke Team + My complete thoughts on the run

My Winning Renegade Platinum Hardcore Nuzlocke Team + My complete thoughts on the run
Renegade Platinum is my first romhack Hardcore Nuzlocke. I ended up winning on attempt 3 with a fairly unusual team. I did have some popular team members like Gliscor but since I was playing with candies and no ev-training, my Gliscor's poor IVs kept him off the team. I used a calculator and this spreadsheet as well as a repel manip guide. I played with my modified dupes clause: only living pokemon are considered dupes. I turned off xp gain and leveled all of my pokemon to the level cap of the gym leader for that split. I also considered ALL gift encounters the encounter for that particular zone, so in for example Etterna city I had to choose between Togepi, Treecko, or Porygon. Additionally I only considered the FIRST pokemon I received so I was only eligible for Infernape, Venasaur, Sceptile, and Meganium. I used Torterra as my starter.
Under these rules I thought it was a particularly interesting run. In my first attempt I wiped to Barry right before Wake, in attempt 2 I wiped to Cyrus in the Distortion World, and attempt 3 cleared.
Undervalued Pokemon that I found very helpful in my attempts:
Starmie - People really sleep on this Pokemon, to date I've NEVER beaten a hardcore Nuzlocke without Starmie besides Pokemon Black where it's physically impossible to get one. 115 base speed and 100 sp. atk. with an INSANE TM move pool and access to recover and rapid spin make this pokemon INSANE. On top of all this 50% of the time it gets natural cure. It's one of the best ice beam users in any Pokemon game. Pick up the starfish in Canalave, it's free, and you can immediately use it to bait in and pop Riley's Salamence. Just make sure to grab the ice beam, you can get it after you beat wake. I recommend running Starmie with choice specs, psychic, surf, ice beam, and dazzling gleam but you can always swap the specs and/or swap moves around (thunderbolt is another excellent move). You can always get recover and rapid spin in Pastoria.
Meganium - Meganium is really powerful especially with its new fairy typing in this game, however Meganium really only powers up after you've made it past Fantina. Honestly I would've rather had the gator with its new dark typing because I've never once made it through Fantina risk-less. I nearly wiped to her in my winning attempt. However if your Umbreon can valiantly carry you through Fantina, Meganium is a monster. Give it energy ball, moonblast, toxic, and synthesis and the dino rips. Meganium is shockingly tanky with a dragon immunity. Meganium is what made Cynthia possible for me. However the 4x poison weakness and new steel weakness makes it hard to use until after Fantina, the hardest fight. Meganium stepped up to the plate as a stall monster as well as counter to Barry's Heracross and Breloom. Meganium also outsped a shocking number of Pokemon in my runs. It's not exceptionally fast, but it's also not slow either. You should get a Feraligatr if your ruleset allows you to unless you wanna risk wiping to Fantina, but if you wanna ball out Meganium will serve you well.
Rotom - In my runs, I banned rotom's forms. I already felt kinda cheesy using a mythical in the first place so only base form Rotom was used. Despite this, 3 immunities and an insane speed stat made Rotom a safe pickup especially if you can't taunt the Gengar encounter (the gengar tends to kill itself with curse). With a magnet Rotom reliably popped Barry's Staraptor and any other flying/water threat. Rotom is fast and easy to get in for free. That's really all I can ask for out of an encounter and despite being kinda weak on paper Rotom was just around a lot in my runs getting kills.
Ninjask - Setting aside Shedinja shenanigans (which I did employ conservatively), Ninjask goes hard against Gardenia which is already pretty helpful. But it also has speed boost, swords dance, and baton pass. You can do the math. If you can pp stall a pokemon Ninjask will set up for ANYONE. And there are plenty of stall targets in the gyms. I found this particularly abusive on the Maylene fight where Gengar + Shiftry stalled out her Gallade (you can bait out Gallade by killing Medicham with a gengar or other psychic weak pokemon) and I set up a brick breaking Infernape with +6/+6 to sweep her entire team. Very helpful because none of my all natural setup mons could safely complete the sweep.
Masquerain - Probably your best Lake Verity encounter. It gets intimidate, it wrecks Gardenia. It's also crazy buffed in this game with 100 base speed and 110 base sp. atk. I clearly have a thing for fast special attackers but why shouldn't I? They kill everything. Masquerain falls off in the late game especially if you have a Starmie, but when all of your best late game encounters are deadweight in the early game, getting a solid pokemon like Masquerain to carry your run on its shoulders until you can evolve your Psuedo-Legendaries is insanely useful.
Metang - This thing does insane work in the mid-game. You don't want a Metagross, you want a Metang. Metang came in HUGE in so many of the mid game fights. I also suspect a Metang + Pre-Paralyzed Porygon 2 can stall out Fantina's Gengar to enable you to set up. I never ended up using this strat, in attempt 2 I tried but I didn't pre-status my recover Porygon so both Metang and Porygon got burned. In attempt 3 I skipped both pokemon.
Pokemon I found underwhelming:
Metagross - Metagross is the worst psuedo-legendary in this run. On top of this, getting the gift Beldum blocks you out of the fossil encounter if you play with my ruleset. Metagross is way too slow and unlike Tyranitar, it doesn't get access to a setup move. I found that Steelix and Magnezone did everything I needed Metagross to do but better. I'd skip this one unless you want a Metang for the midgame.
Gliscor - Gliscor was the hero of my second attempt. But I feel like Gliscor sits right on the edge of being good. I didn't use Gliscor because it was broken, I used Gliscor because it was the only decent pokemon I had. I used my poison heal Gliscor in Attempt 3 a single digit number of times. It's just outclassed by so many other pokemon and having those pokemon is the sign of a healthy run that can go all the way. If you're relying on Gliscor it's (generally) only a matter of time until you wipe. I'd still say get one because you can repel manip to guarantee the encounter. It's on average your best encounter for route 206 but I can't blame you if you want to gamble to highroll a Magby or Stunky.
Flygon - Flygon is INSANELY buffed in this game, it's more buffed than, to my knowledge, any other pokemon in this romhack. It's a 600 BST psuedo-legendary with adjusted typing to bug-dragon. It also gets access to compound eyes, a fact that excited me because I was using wide lens on my Flygon in my Black 2 challenge mode hardcore nuzlocke. However, Flygon is just kinda, not good enough? Gaining a bug typing is actually an insane nerf. Dragon doesn't cover Bug's Flying and Rock weaknesses making Flygon surprisingly vulnerable and hard to set up. Additionally I found no major use for Vibrava (which is also buffed). Flygon really only came up as a u-turn killer against psychic and dark pokemon allowing me to pick my matchup. Flygon also had just the right profile for my Cyrus 8v6. It's not a bad pokemon but in Oreburgh tunnel you still definitely would rather get an Onix. Finally, compound eyes just never comes up, you'd rather have levitate. The moves that really made my Black 2 Flygon a wide lens user were Rock Slide and Dragon Tail. Dragon tail is a gen 5 move and rock slide is better utilized on other pokemon like your Garchomp since Garchomp isn't weak to flying.
Weavile - I had a weavile in attempt 2 and attempt 3. Weavile is perhaps the encounter I got with the most INSANE variance. In attempt 2 I had a modest weavile with pressure and well below average IVs. It was the worst pokemon in my box by a mile. I spent the entire run salty that I had a weavile instead of a pokemon that was useful. In attempt 3 I got a naughty weavile with technician and near perfect IVs. This weavile gets technician boosted revenges, faint attacks, ice shards and was generally a complete choice band MONSTER. I was reliably 1 shotting pokemon with neutral damage. I feel like unless you high roll, you end up with a medicore encounter and you'd much rather roll for something else. I skipped my 100% sneasel on route 212 (another repel manip) in attempt 3 and got a Weavile randomly before Candice while trying for a Frosslass. Despite my Weavile going HUGE, I still think you're best trying to dodge this encounter unless you wanna gamble.
Milotic - Milotic is a pretty good pokemon on paper, but in my attempt I found that, except in niche scenarios, Meganium was just better. Milotic has pretty bad physical bulk and I found that a lot of the Pokemon I wanted to wall were physical attackers that Meganium was better suited to sit on. It's probably still your best and most consistent Mt. Coronet encounter, but I'd be curious to see if skipping the Milotic could get you a high quality encounter consistently.
Togekiss - Encore is a great move but Togekiss is just a touch too slow a lot of the time especially without speed EVs. It also just had a lot of overlapping weaknesses with other members of my team. This is another Pokemon that I felt Meganium just outclassed in my runs. Togekiss did save me from dying to Fantina though, so that is worth something.
Torterra - Torterra has a great moment in the mid-game, but after beating Fantina, Torterra is a box warmer. On top of that, 50% of the time its gets overgrow making it nearly worthless. Torterra with shell armor has a decent matchup against Fantina's Mismagius, without it you're at the casino. The grass starter I had on my team most of the time was the dino, not the turtle,
Tips for annoying fights:
Aaron before Fantina: Set up stealth rocks. If you can kill the Scizor and Drapion the rocks will kneecap Aaron's other 3 pokemon.
Fantina: Get Umbreon or wipe. Kill the Drifblim in such a way that it only gets 1 turn, if you're faster 2 shot it, if you're slower 1 shot it. Make sure not to drop the Drifblim below 75% unless you're killing it, the Starf berry could give it a speed boost. Raichu is incredibly valuable here. Also would love to see someone try stalling out that Gengar.
Backlot Tag and Spear Pillar 12v12: Blow up a pokemon on turn 1, kill that damn Staravia/Staraptor so Barry will actually do something. For the Spear Pillar 12v12 pre-poison your boom pokemon and give it a zoom lens. One of the crobats has bright powder and double team. I dislike discharge strats because none of my Pokemon could reliably kill the crobats in 1 hit with spread discharge damage. If you let them live you probably need to sacrifice your held item for a persim berry and pre-burn making it even harder to get a discharge kill and preventing you from using a zoom lens. You can't let the hypnosis double team bright powder crobat to set up. Have an answer for the Espeon in Backlot Tag and Yanmega in the 12v12. Barry has a Heracross and (likely) a Breloom, you need to cover those pokemon because those are the Pokemon that Barry has that actually do something. In Backlot Tag I sacrificed my Golem, in 12v12 I sacrificed my Glalie. I recommend you do the same.
Cyrus 8v6: If you have a bulky enough Gyrados and know how to bait kills into the other slot you can set up Gyrados to pop the Palkia and Dialga with Earthquake. This is what I did in run 2 before wiping because I let the houndoom set up nasty plot. In run 3 I didn't have a bulky enough Gyarados. Without good enough sp. def. Gyarados dies in 1 hit to roar of time and the Dialga will target it 50% of the time instead of your bait. Instead I used choice scarf Poliwrath and focus sash Flygon to outspeed and kill the Dialga with CC and Earth Power. My Jolly Garchomp was slightly too slow. Palkia will (likely) always hit Flygon, because it sees a kill, breaking the focus sash. The AI will have (likely) picked their move before your Poliwrath defense dropped from Close Combat protecting it from dying. Flygon will have no item for the actual fight but will live. Switch out to Meganium and Milotic and sit on the Palkia. With Rotom and Magnezone you should have enough coverage for the 6v6 as Cyrus' actual team has 3 flying types. Teach Magnezone mirror coat in case you get magnet pull trapped and spam it until the opposing Magnezone kills itself. Be careful Cyrus' Magnezone has mirror coat itself. This strat was verified using a calculator so make sure you do the same.
Overall I really liked the romhack, it was fun and the fights were engaging. The big, unfun elements, were fights where I had imperfect control over the field. The barry tag battles and the random elite four teams are nearly impossible to plan 100% for. The best I could do was plan the first few turns and then ball out. I also feel like Mismagius was a bit overtuned especially for the third gym, 4 immunities and 2 uncommon weaknesses is ROUGH. It really felt like no amount of strategy was good enough to 100% safely overcome some of the fights. Additionally the best late game encounters are stacked early on in the run making your early game MUCH harder. In contrast, most of my encounters near the end of the run never came out of my box. I feel like the encounters could've been distributed better. Additionally, having an option for the distortion world obstacles besides pulling belly drum off of my Poliwrath and giving it strength so I wouldn't have to drop the moves I NEEDED would've been great. Additionally in a romhack of this difficulty, I would've liked to see the accuracy of critical moves like rock slide and rock tomb boosted. It's kinda frustrating constantly having to play around powerful moves I can't reliably use without gambling and/or sacrificing my item slot. It made getting rock coverage a MASSIVE struggle the entire run. Being able to sweep Byron easily was also kinda lame. I had a harder time with the ace trainers in that gym.
But despite all these complaints, some of the fights HIT. I really liked Gardenia, Maylene, Candice, and Volkner in particular. Gardenia has a lot of good coverage, I honestly would've liked to see the Cherrim replaced with something else because once you overcome the technician breloom and tangela it's baby mode. I honestly would've liked to see the Breloom's power distributed more into the Bellossom and Cherrim slots. Technician Bullet Seed Spore is hard to deal with that early. The Tangela is an interesting challenge because it knows ancient power and is fairly bulky so you can't reliably one-shot it. Maylene was a cool puzzle, I ended up beating Maylene a different way every attempt. It does feel like a bit of a box check because in attempt 2 I had to use wide lens bounce Gyrados to sweep the gym casino style. I don't mind that the Gallade is so easy to set up on because it's a big challenge baiting it out unless you have some specific pokemon. Candice was another interesting gym leader to plan because Frosslass is super buffed and the Glaceon has bright powder + snow cloak. I wish for this particular fight, Aura Sphere had better distribution. I got lucky that in attempt 2 I had a Lucario and in Attempt 3 I had a Gengar but these are challenging or rare encounters. The Weavile is also a big and interesting challenge. Volker was another really cool battle, it really punishes you for abusing ground typing and I ended up bringing in a fairly diverse team featuring two water types.
I had a good time and am probably gonna take on Blaze Black 2 next.

2024.05.11 22:21 shrekedyourlastshrak DAT Breakdown: 30 TS, 29 AA

DAT Breakdown: 30 TS, 29 AA
Hi everyone!
I have been looking forward to making a breakdown for a while now after reading so many while I was studying. I took my test this morning and was really shocked to see the results!! :)
Here’s pretty much everything I did for each subject and how I thought the test was. I’ll also post my practice test results as a comment.
Resources: DAT Booster, Youtube (Chad’s Prep and a random assortment of videos based on what I didn’t know), DAT Bootcamp’s 1 Free Full-Length test, Anki (only for a few weeks to fill in gaps- booster’s deck for bio, skipping most of Diversity of Life), 2007 & 2009 ADA tests (sciences and QR only), DAT Booster’s Bio Crash Courses I, II, IV, Khan Academy for SAT/high school math practice problems. (My #1 resource though would be Booster’s practice tests 1-15 taken under timed conditions)
Preface: I am not a STEM major and I have taken Gen Chem 1, Gen Chem 2, Orgo 1, an intro molecular biology course, an intro integrative biology course, Anatomy, and Physiology. I’ve always liked reading, but I last took a math class 4 years ago and I was never great at math D:
I studied for 4 months from Jan 17- May 10th while doing 13 credit hours and doing 8-14 hours of research, volunteering, and work each week. I studied for 2-4 hours a day in the first month, 3-6 hours a day in the second month, 4-6 hours a day in the third month (mostly around 5?), and 4-6 hours a day in the fourth month with 6-8 hours a day (mostly 7-8 hours) in the last two weeks before my test. I was overwhelmed at first and I didn’t have a strong background in any section except for Orgo 1 and Gen Chem 1, but I really started getting used to the material around month 2. I used Booster’s 10 week schedule for my content review phase (1st month) but I didn’t get everything done in the schedule every day. I ended up making my own schedule for the rest of my time studying after taking into account what people were saying on breakdowns and what Booster’s schedule had. I only took one day off to relax in the last month of studying, but I took maybe 3 days off in the first two months because I was cooked from other stuff - so not really to relax lol
Bio: I watched all the DAT Booster Videos while taking notes to make sure I was engaging with the video, read through Feralis’ expanded notes and took notes on them, went through like 20% of Booster’s questions in bio, used Anki for like an hour a day for 4ish weeks, read through the cheat sheets near the end of my studying, and constantly reviewed and kept tabs on what I didn’t know. I also attended 3 crash courses for bio near my test date. I didn’t think the crash courses added too much to my knowledge but they were a nice review. If you’re already solid in bio (scoring 22+ in bio maybe and feeling good?) you don’t really need them. I read like 6 cheat sheets a day 1.5 weeks before my test. I personally also like making review sheets of info I don’t know every when I study, and I found that worked very well for me to understand the most complicated topics. I made notecards but I never reviewed them. I was overwhelmed at first, but you really just have to grind through the info and keep reviewing what you don’t know so it sticks. It is extremely doable to do well in this section!! Please don’t feel discouraged if you’re not scoring well while you’re studying.
Gen Chem: Watched all DAT Booster’s videos, took notes, went through all the questions in the question bank 2x plus the marked questions once more before my test. Went through all of Chad’s videos super fast before my test. Supplemented studying with YouTube videos throughout studying. And I made a bomb review sheet for the stuff I didn’t know to keep reviewing. Memorize all of the equations in Booster’s sheet and also know the necessary units for each equation! In my opinion, what absolutely needs to be memorized for this section are the formulas, periodic trends, characteristics of solids/liquids/gases, various rules/laws (gas laws, rate laws, solubility, trends with acidity, etc.). If you have these down, you’d be pretty set from the beginning! :) I was really nervous for gen chem because I wasn’t solid in gen chem 2 material related to acids/bases and it felt like there was so much material and so many minor rules to follow, but it will come if you keep practicing and reviewing.
Orgo: I did well in my college Orgo 1 class and I just kind of like Orgo! But I didn’t take orgo 2, and I was going crazy at first because there were so many different/new reagents and reactions. Also I forgot a lot of orgo over winter break but it came back fast. I went through all of the question banks, marked questions 3x, watched YouTube and a few of Booster’s videos on unfamiliar reactions/reagents. Again, I continually made review sheets of stuff I was weak on. In my opinion, what needs to be memorized is acidity/basicity, C NMR, H NMR, IR ranges, basics of elimination and substitution, carbocation trends, lab tests and experiments (like extraction and TLC), and whatever reactions you don’t know. Keep tabs on new reactions and reagents that pop up when you study and you’ll start understanding trends/filling in your gaps.
PAT: I was worst at angle ranking and keyholes. I made sure to practice PAT almost every day and under timed conditions every other day. One thing I did while studying that I really liked was what I called 60 in 35. I would do 10 questions from each section in Booster’s question banks (and later generators for angles/pattern folding/cube counting) in 35 minutes. Timing was never an issue for me because of that I think. Also for cube counting, I didn’t love the T charts because I found that I would lose track of what cube I was staring at lol. I just went through a row/line of cubes and wrote down how many sides each had. I was consistently getting 15/15 for cube counting with that strat, so if you don’t like T charts, try that! I found that pattern folding and TFE got way easier with practice, and try to get 15/15 for cube counting and pattern folding every time.
RC: I liked reading as a kid which helps with speed a lot. I liked search and destroy and I did that with every question. I did all of booster’s practice banks and after the first month, I only “studied” RC with doing sections in full length tests. Something I realized later on is that every single question’s answer is either explicit or implied. If there’s a unique phrase in the question, it is almost guaranteed that those words will be in the passage word-for-word. They do try to trick you with numbers/statistics quite often, so approach them with caution!
QR: I am not very good at math, but I made sure to practice QR as often as the sciences. I also found a lot of free general math questions from Khan Academy. I would suggest memorizing the formula sheet early on so that you can apply formulas to different situations ASAP. I did all of the question banks a few times over I think. I also almost repeated all of the practice test sections and made sure to fully understand what I got wrong.
My #1 recommendation for every section is being honest with yourself about what you don’t know and to constantly keep tabs on that stuff. Be super disciplined and you’ll see it pay off. In whatever way, just make sure you’re constantly working to improve your knowledge so that everything is consistent on a high level! I did this mainly with my cheat sheet strategy, but that’s just what I did. You know yourself best and you should believe in yourself! As long as you see improvement or feel improvement, you’re doing something right!
Test Day: I think I got like 3 hours of sleep the night before and I wasn’t sleeping well all week. I was feeling pretty anxious about the DAT every day the week before the test, and especially on test day :( I was also super stressed during my exam and I was constantly worried that the software would bug out or my test would be invalidated somehow. Also it didn’t help that one of the workers told me I wouldn’t able to access my locker during the break and I was stressing about that until the break when I asked another worker and they said I could. I was like bruh really. So I was feeling really terrible during the test and I was worried, stressed, and hungry lol. So I would say be mentally prepared for test day to be stressful, but remember that it will probably be 100% fine and that stress eats into your success.
The test itself was similar and not similar to the practice tests I had taken. The most similar to booster was the PAT section and the orgo section. Both felt like taking another practice test. GC seemed slightly easier, and there were no super long questions. Bio was WAY easier than a booster practice test! I saw a BUNCH of repeat concepts and there were no questions that threw me off. It was evenly distributed in all sections. I would say that before the test, I felt solid in 90-95% of the high-yield content for each section, and the test really does mainly only test you on the high yield stuff the prep software talks about. I made like 3 educated guesses in bio, 2 in orgo, and maybe 1 in gen chem. I finished the sciences with 35-40 minutes left and I was able to check over every question. I found 2 mistakes I made in gen chem and I changed an answer in bio! I had a 22 paragraph passage in RC, but the questions they asked and each passage was similar to Booster. QR was a little bit different than Booster’s QR with a few harder problems, but it was generally super similar.
Sheesh that was a lot. I honestly did not expect to do this well at all. If you really put in the hard work to study for the DAT, it will definitely pay off. Start studying early, and keep at it!! I felt discouraged many days while studying and my progress wasn’t always linear, but it definitely paid off. You can do this!! Please PM me with any questions! Happy studying :)

2024.05.11 17:34 OkAdvertising3188 What I did to get into UW Math...

Tons of people on this sub have been wondering how to get in UW math, so I will share the advice/stats that got me there. Also for those who applied drop your grades and application status.
Backround:
Marks:
Physcis: 97 Advanced Functions: 98 Calculus: 98 Chemestry: 96 Comp sci: 99 English: 85 Bioloigy: 91 Religion: 97 (mandatory for my school; I would replace it w data management if I could)
Contests:
-Despite me fucking up the contest, the mistakes I made and the prep I did helped me a lot in regular math (Thinking questions)
Extra Curriculars:
-Feel free to join the math club/team, I had a lot of fun and it improved my skills for sure
AIF
-This is VERY important so give yourself plenty of time to think and write it. (I took 2 weeks)
-Basicly be genuine and honest, there's no standard metric for the AIF, and the markers want to see you're somewhat well rounded and passionate about going here.
Time commitment
-EC's stuff took around 1:30 per day
-I had no part time job and would not recommend one unless financially necessary
Thats all I got, I'll respond to any questions in the comments. Good luck hope it ends well for you.

2024.05.11 12:38 Just-Firefighter3197 Rescuing this alocasia

Rescuing this alocasia
Hello alocasia-friends and pros,
I‘ll be honest, we need ur help.
We rescued this (appears like) almost dead alocasia from another house. As you can see, it hangs off really badly. We have it here for like 1-2 weeks and sadly don’t see any improvements.
We tried giving it some humidity by putting a wet Plastic bag over it and putting it under a grow lamp, sadly also without any success.
I will get a new, bigger pot today, because we didn’t had one left, that could fit the enormous stem this guy has.
What is your advice on this guy, should we cut it off or wait a little more? The Stem darkens, like you can see in the picture above, and it really doesn’t feel really fresh either. Also the stem feels a little wet.
The leaf also gets a few yellowish spots.
My girlfriend could probably tell a little more about this, and it would also sound a little bit more professional. But I hope you still get my point here and got some advice for me.
Thanks a lot in advance! If there are any questions left, feel free to ask. I really wanna save this guy!!

2024.05.11 08:58 Content_Spare_4662 Boruto Episodes to watch (as a naruto fan)

If you're a Naruto fan that has tried to get into boruto in the past, but most episodes or arcs seem boring, then I've got you covered.
I consider these episodes to be the bare minimum you have to watch in order to enjoy Boruto, but feel free to disagree.
1-2 8-9 13-15 19-24 34 36-39 51-66 70 72-77 92 120-122 124-125 127-136 154 157-175 181 186-187 188-220 221-227 274-281 287-293
Here are the reasons for why I chose each episode:
Episodes 1 & 2: These two episodes introduce the main cast, and so I consider these necessary to watch.
Episode 8 & 9 These episode gives us a glimpse into the Otsutsuki, and Boruto's dojutsu. Boruto fights Hanabi, it has great animation, and it has character development.
Episodes 13-15 Boruto and Mitsuki save the hidden leaf village from Nue, a chakra beast.
Episodes 19-24 (Sarada Uchiha Arc) I'm not going to spoil this arc, because it's awesome. Most will agree
Episode 34 In this episode Boruto basically get's a reality check. It has character development, good animation, and is an overall solid episode. It's also a chill and low stakes episode to watch before the next 2 arcs begin
Episode 36-39 (Graduation exams arc) Kakashi holds the graduation exams where the students become ninja.
Episode 51-66 (Chunin exams arc) This is an awesome arc, but again, I won't spoil this one because it's too good.
Episode 70 Good character development for metal Lee, good fight scenes. You'll also love this episode if you like Might guy and Rock Lee.
Episodes 72-77 (Mitsuki's Disappearance Arc) I would not recommend watching this whole arc, but episodes 72-77 are very good, and I would highly recommend them.
Episode 92 This is a chill and low stakes episode to watch before the next 2 arcs begin, and also closes out the "Mitsuki's Disappearance arc". So it's worth including.
Episode 120-122, 124-125 If you're a fan of Shinki (Gaara's son) you'll probably like this arc. Good character development for Shinki and Boruto, high stakes fights with the Otsutsuki.
Episodes 127-136 (Time Slip Arc) Naruto fans will probably enjoy this arc the most. Sasuke and Boruto go back in time to stop an Otsutsuki member from stealing the nine tails from young Naruto Uzumaki
Episode 154 Himawari tries shinobi training for a day. It's good character development, and Himawari is likely going to be a main character in the upcoming "Two Blue Vortex" Arc. So I believe this is an important episode.
157-175 (Kara Actuation Arc) This Arc introduces many important characters, it has a lot of character development, it is important to the plot, and it has some well animated fights. (If you decide to skip it, watch episode 186)
Episode 181 In this episode Victor gets defeated by Kashin Koji. Kashin Koji will also be an important character in the upcoming fight against Boruto and his team.
Episode 186-187 These episodes greatly contribute to the overall plot of Boruto. During the fight, Sarada, Mitsuki, Boruto, and Konohamaru are all powerless against a single ninja tool that can absorb their jutsu. this clearly portrays Shinobi as relics of the past. (It's a good substitute if you didn't watch the Kara Actuation Arc.)
188-220 (Kawaki Arc) This Arc introduces Kawaki, a very important Character in Boruto. He has a Dojutsu similar to Boruto's Jougan. This Arc has a lot of character development between Boruto, Kawaki, and Naruto. It is overall a great Arc that I highly recommend.
221-227 (Chunin re-examination arc) Good fight scenes, it is an overall solid arc
Unwatched:
274-281 (Labyrinth Game Arc) 287-293 (Code's assault Arc)
I'm waiting for the dubbed version of Labyrinth Game Arc and Code's assault arc, but they are ranked highly on tier list videos, so I've decided to include both of them.

2024.05.11 05:58 SympathyHonest5340 My mother (rant + advice welcome)

I’m going to start from when I was born, 15 years ago December 31st 2008, I was a very healthy baby of course and I have an older sister (20F) and a older brother (23M) my younger brother aswell but he is later down the line, you’re probably wondering why it is that I am telling you my entire backstory, well this is important so you can have additional background context leading up to my initial story. Anyways since I was around the age of 3 my parents have in-forced this rule, you may or may not be familiar with this but it was spanking, if any of us (mainly me my older sister and brother) were to act up we get one of the four, one being the belt two being the hanger three being the bare hand and sometimes even the wooden spoon, so anyways I got way more spankings than all of my siblings. I brought up the subject to my mother recently and she told me that I got an equal amount as them but I am almost certain that I’ve gotten more than them combined. Because my oldest brother is or was my moms little angel and barely got spanked he definitely did but maybe once or twice his entire lifetime my sister however received quite a lot, this is a rough estimate here but I’m assuming like 10 - 15 spankings in her lifetime. The key difference however is they way they would discipline them vs. me, for my siblings it would be a simple spanking with the hand never really used objects like hangers or belts but sometimes they would if deemed necessary, however for me it was always deemed necessary, i have a lot of memories of mostly the hangers, and wooden spoons and the occasional belt depending on the day, granted i was a much more difficult child then my siblings I was very different than them, from a young age I would wander off and distance myself from my mother, she’d have to find me I had a very adventurous soul back then, the whole concept is that I disobeyed her orders quite often resulting in a spanking or is they would call it a “good ol’ fashion whoopin’” needless to say I hated it every second of it, and for some odd reason it resulted in me being more disobedient in the long run, I’m homeschooled for reference so I had to be surrounded by my parents all of the time, and it was very damaging, I wish so badly that they would enroll me in school, anyways my mother would sometimes make my siblings hold me down by my legs while my dad held my arm and my mom would hold my other arm while she used the free arm to spank me, sometimes I’d struggle so hard to get away that my pants would fall down which made it worse, sometimes I’d receive 15 or more spankings in one go, I think most problems with my mother stem from these events, it hurts me so bad I just want to forget all of the pain and the bruises I’d have to wake up with the next day not being able to sit properly because of the pain, I want to forget it so badly I envy those who didn’t have to experience this I wonder how I could’ve turned out if it weren’t for this, anyways over the past 3 years I have matured mentally the spankings did stop when I was 13 years old, where I received my last few by a yellow hanger, it broke because I was spanked so hard by it, but hey! At least it was my last one right? Even though the physical pain stopped the emotional torment started, I think it was worst from age 10 - 13 because I would sneak my mothers laptop into my room without her permission and sometimes I would get caught and the outcome was not pleasant by any means. One of our worst arguments was from when I was 13 in September I had my electronics confiscated for at least a month after the fact and the initial fight lasted around 3 or 4 days, god I don’t miss those, I’d get my door taken off countless times, at least 3 times, I would cut myself, you see when my mom stopped spanking me every argument with her I would associate pain I would cut myself have severe panic attacks, but it got to a certain point where I was just done, mentally, physically whatever you may call it I was done, either that or I matured, we still have arguments but much less frequently I haven’t cut myself since may of 2023 :) still going strong here, now I do need to take accountability for my actions, I was an awful child to deal with and I do give my mom credit for having to put up with a devil in a herd of angels (my siblings) so yeah, I did bad shit as well, but I just can’t seem to shake off the spankings, the pain the regret the bruises I just can’t I want to leave it in the past but i just can’t, my mom still emotionally manipulates me calls me lazy calls me a jerk I get snappy and then boom a full blown fight emerges my mom usually calls me lazy and that she is the maid for everyone else it pisses me off so bad. Though I have a 3.8 GPA I am not that smart I am in 7th grade English even though I should be in 9th or something and 6th grade math, 7th grade history Spanish and yeah fun stuff like that, anyways any suggestions for my mother and how can I distance myself from her? I’m tired of her it’s draining me I’m tired of my entire family ganging up on me constantly and making fun of me taking pictures of me without my consent etc. I hate them I do so much.

2024.05.11 04:06 nofucks2givethrwaway Group advertised themselves as being super open and friendly, ended up having ZERO communication skills

EDIT 1: Adding a TLDR and disclaimer about the writing as some people seem frustrated with the length and the level of editorializing I've done. I also saw it pointed out a spoiler about Dragon Heist and I have edited the post accordingly.
EDIT 2: After some thought, I'm actually going to delete the entire list of "miscellaneous red flags" as they aren't incredibly relevant to the story at hand and considering the length of the story I probably should have pared it down a little before posting.
TLDR: A member of this dnd group was extremely micromanagey and two-faced while the dungeon master could not bring themselves to communicate their issues with my character. They, as well as the server owner, came to the conclusion I was some sort of predator for having done what they refer to as 'rrp' with an 18 year old when I was 21. They deleted the server and blocked me.
DISCLAIMER FOR EVERYTHING BELOW: This horror story is extremely fresh for me as it just happened this week, so I won't lie- I do a lot of venting and editorializing in this post. If that's not something that you want to read, then this post is not for you. Mods, if that is not allowed, please feel free to delete this post or whatever. The catharsis of posting was enough for me.
This was my first time playing DND. The fallout just happened this week, so it's all pretty fresh still for me.
Here is the cast of people in this saga. There are two campaigns that will be mentioned so I’ve provided information on both, though the player characters are not as important as the players themselves- save for one of my own. (Names have been changed to protect the identities of all involved.)
Myself
I am your narrator.
Dragon Heist Campaign: I played a half-elf cleric
Call of the Deep Campaign: I created a water genasi bard.
Maddie
They are my friend and co-narrator.
Dragon Heist Campaign: they played a drow monk
Call of the Deep Campaign: they played an elf warlock
Jesse
They took an active part in this horror story.
Dragon Heist Campaign: They played a half-goliath dhampir hemomancy wizard
Call of the Deep Campaign: Jesse was the DM for this campaign.
Kane
They took a semi-active part in this horror story.
Dragon Heist Campaign: Kane was the DM for this campaign.
Call of the Deep Campaign: They played a hobgoblin rogue
Cassidy
They took a semi-active part in this horror story.
Dragon Heist Campaign: they played a tiefling bard
Call of the Deep Campaign: they played a “fiend-touched aasimar” warlock
Anita
They are not an active participant and will not come up very much.
Dragon Heist Campaign: They played a tiefling artificer
Call of the Deep Campaign: They did not participate in this campaign.
Mandy
They were kicked early in the Dragon Heist campaign due to compatibility issues.
Dragon Heist Campaign: They played a fire genasi Cleric of Helm
Call of the Deep Campaign: They did not participate in this campaign.
Penny
They are not an active participant and will not come up very much.
Dragon Heist Campaign: They played an aasimar paladin
Call of the Deep Campaign: they played a sea dragon?? I actually wasn't completely sure what their character’s race and class was.
I responded to a post Cassidy had made on lfg. They created a discord server and invited myself, Kane, Jesse, Mandy, and Anita. Kane was going to DM a module- dragon heist. Great. We go into character creation. This is my first time doing all of this, but I've listened to enough DND media to know (or rather, to think) that a lot of backstory is good. So, I took a pre-existing OC of mine and I created a backstory for her in faerun.
I wrote, altogether, 19 pages of backstory. I understand now that this was not good, though at the time I received a lot of very positive feedback from Kane as well as Jesse- who was a very close friend of Kane's and seemed to be helping them get things set up.
In my character's backstory, I gave her a plot hook with a missing wife. This wife character was not originally my character- they were my friend, Maddie's character. I got Maddie's permission to use her OC in my character's backstory, and didn't consider doing anything more. This wife character’s backstory was a part of that 19 pages of backstory, as was a lot of other stuff. This was a mistake for so many reasons and I cannot overstate my regret in having done this. I genuinely did not think anything of it, at the time. Again, I got good feedback from the DM and their friend. I got permission from my friend to use their character and didn’t think to put a disclaimer that this character wasn’t mine. This was so stupid of me, and it is relevant later down the line.
What will also be relevant later down the line is my age, and Maddie’s age. I am 25 and Maddie is 22. We met in a community discord server for a less known anime, at which point they had just turned 18 and I was 21. In this public discord server is where we began to ship our OCs together and rp them as a couple. Does that information not seem super relevant? Just keep it in the back of your mind.
Anyway, we get past character creation. I connect my half-elf cleric to Cassidy’s tiefling Bard and we intertwine their backstories. I am a rather shy person, and am a little excited to have made a friend. Everyone was incredibly nice and I was really excited for my first ever DND campaign.
Session 0 happens and we go over expectations. Everyone seems to be on the same page, we do some practice combat- it’s great. Session 1 happens, and Mandy has her cleric of helm murder a person in broad daylight. They also flirted with Jesse’ wizard and then seemingly the straw that broke the camel’s back was that they also provided the DM with only one paragraph of backstory after two weeks of being asked for character backstory, and were thus summarily kicked from the server and blocked by Kane, Jesse, and Cassidy.
Kane decides they want to redo session 1 and invite 2 new people, for a total of 6 players. I ask if my friend Maddie can join, because at this point I was feeling incredibly anxious and wanted somebody I knew in the group. They said that Maddie could join, and they brought in another person from the LFG reddit. This person did not last 24 hours in the server before Kane kicked and blocked them for not being “communicative enough.”
Thus, Penny was brought in. As far as I could tell, Penny was Kane’s friend. Jesse was pretty mean and condescending to them in my opinion but that’s none of my business, just my opinion.
Scheduling conflicts begin happening for the Dragon Heist Campaign. People in the server would communicate pretty regularly, and it was in these conversations that it came out that my Selunite’s missing wife was Maddie’s character. Nothing is said to me or Maddie about it; nothing to indicate that this was any cause for pause or discomfort in Kane, Cassidy, Jesse, Penny, or Anita.
During this time Jesse decides they want to run their own campaign- Call of the Deep. They prove themselves to be incredibly difficult to collaborate with. I don’t know how to describe character creation with them other than I felt like I was trying really hard to tell them what they wanted to hear about my character and it felt like I kept coming up short. For this Call of the Deep Campaign, I wanted to have a water genasi cleric of umberlee who was delusionally and utterly devoted to and in love with Umberlee. I made it incredibly clear that I did not expect Umberlee to return her affections. She was supposed to be a little whimsical; a little off her rocker. Jesse wants her to transform into an aberration of some kind- I agree, I think that sounds cool. They suggest she be a child of prophecy, and then when I tried to run with that they immediately backtrack and say that wouldn’t work, umberlee wouldn’t be a large part of this campaign, and my character couldn’t be a child of prophecy for any cults because there wasn’t any cults in the material that have to do with the water (This is verbatim, I don’t have access to our conversations anymore as I now have Jesse blocked. I can’t promise that this is 100% a faithful representation but I am doing my best to relay this as best I can from memory.)
At one point they try to convince me to make my character’s deity Valkur instead. I let them know that I didn’t really vibe with Valkur as her patron deity, and they get pissy about it and tell me to just “choose a God” or “They can choose a God for me.” I really don’t want my character to be connected with religion anymore, since it seemed to be an issue.
So I make my character a bard with commitment issues. They nitpick little details of her backstory- “why is she from cormyr? Don’t you know that’s landlocked?” (She grew up in Cormyr, left at around 19, and has lived near the water since.) “What is her connection to the water?” (Her whole thing is literally that she’s a free spirit who can’t be tamed, just like the ocean. She left home to be around the ocean.) “Do you really want her to be friends with XYZ character? They’re explicitly not connected to the plot” (They’re a player character, so they’re about as connected to the plot as I am. Yes, I want them to be friends.) After a lot of not-super-fun character creation with Jesse I have a character with a bland backstory, no plothooks of her own, and no personal goals or desire or anything beside “be adventurer, make money.” She was just going to turn into an aberration and eventually fuck off to the bottom of the ocean. (I was explicitly told by Jesse that was what was going to happen once I reached a certain level/stage of her transformation.) Yay.
We go through Jesse’ session 0, during which they yell at Penny and completely shut down ideas she proposed for her character. What they allow in their game is obviously their prerogative, but they literally raised their voice at this person in this session 0 voice call and was altogether rather rude about shutting down their suggestions. I quit their campaign the next day due to a scheduling conflict that came up on the day they wanted to play. They message Maddie to ensure that she would still play if I’m not there. She said she would.
We do session 1 for the Dragon Heist Campaign. It’s fun! Kane is a genuinely talented DM. They even put a story hook for my character’s wife! That was not something I had expected and it made me really happy. Jesse hogged a lot of RP moments and derailed the party from the task at hand (talking to an NPC so we could meet a crime lord of some kind) so they could question and interrogate an NPC that had already been questioned and interrogated, but it was good. I was so inspired and excited I wrote a diary entry from my character's point of view referencing characters in her backstory and her wife and her feelings on the things that just occurred. I share this with the group.
That brings us to this week. The following account is from Maddie herself, as I was not a part of the following conversation.
“What started as a normal conversation- discussing my character with Jesse in DMs for the Call of the Deep campaign, and the possibility of her death within the campaign. I’d mentioned, then, having a backup character that could fit with the module, adding offhand that she was a character I’d played before in another campaign. Jesse completely flipped their lid over this- saying in a LOT of words and paragraphs that they thought it was borderline disrespectful to recycle a character from one campaign to the next or to bring in a premade character with a pre-thought up backstory, that it completely takes out the DMs agency in character creation. I have every screenshot from the conversation if you’re feeling nosy, in which I politely stated that I’d never heard that perspective before and I was sorry for not knowing.
Jesse went on and on about how bringing in pre-existing characters is an awful thing to do to a DM since it *forces* the DM to change the setting to fit the character- leaving very little room for me to even reply. Then, they went on to bring up, in a nasty way, about the 19 pages of backstory that had been written for my friend’s character in the other campaign and how they’d absolutely hate it if a player did that to them as a DM, especially taking issue with the ‘missing wife’ plothook in the character’s backstory, saying that they’re so annoyed because it's going to derail the rest of the campaign and it doesn’t fit with the plot at all. I responded that if they have so much of an issue with it then bring it up to the DM, and I stated that I didn’t feel comfortable with them talking about my friend that way.
This, of course, caused Jesse to backpedal HARD, apologizing profusely to the point of very obviously trying to make me feel bad for setting that boundary, and even going to far as to message my friend and apologize even more profusely- even though I’d never given any indication that I had shared this private message with my friend. “I don’t want it to seem like I don’t like having either of you in my game or Kane’s”, they’d said, despite having never said anything nice about my friend or either of her characters. Anything.”
As Maddie mentioned, following their conversation with her, Jesse reached out to me regarding their conversation. I also have screenshots of what they said to me which I can provide upon request. I will provide direct quotes here:
“can i please preface what i'm about to tell you by saying i 100% support you playing [my character’s name].
[Maddie] and i got into a discussion? slash argument? earlier about using pre-existing characters in a setting that didn't fit and I brought [my character’s name] into it as an example of bringing a ton of backstory that forces the dm to write those characters in without thinking that might make her uncomfortable and seem kind of underhanded
I did not mean to imply I have any issue with your character or what you are planning to do, and that example was meant purely to explain to her what my viewpoint on the matter was, but I lost the plot on it and made her uncomfortable, but if you hear about it I want to have told you already that I really like [my character’s name] and I fully support her in her endeavours
I would be happy to explain my stance on it to give that discussion context also, since I have been half dreading writing this message/ messages since i did NOT know how to word it
Basically I (mostly accidentally) implied that [my character’s name] was a character that brought too much from an existing canon when I was meaning to use her as an example to compare against [Maddie’s character’s name](who adopted mannerisms and vibes tm but not a ton of backstory elements) and I was not fully clear on what the comparison was for or to what extent, so I'm sorry about that. I don't want to seem like i was talking about you behind your back and I certainly do not want you to think I have a problem with you playing her.
i was not trying to make it seem like [my character’s name] was an issue
i was trying to compare her to [Maddie’s character’s name] in order to explain where on that spectrum of Bring Personality to Bring Everything i preferred”
I was aware of the argument they had had prior to receiving these messages from Jesse. I wasn’t aware to what extent they had bashed my character, though I was aware my character had come up. This is pure conjecture on my part, but I speculate that was what Jesse was banking on and took advantage of my ignorance to the situation as a way to “get in front” of the coming implosion. They sent these messages to me Tuesday May 7th at 11pm and I did not see them until the following morning. I notice they are in vc with Kane- not something strange in and of itself as people were often on voice call with each other, except for the fact it was before 11am on a wednesday.
I would also directly post my response to them, but again, I have blocked this person on discord and deleted our dms. The screenshots I had taken were to assure Maddie that the matter looked to be at rest. That all said, I accepted their apology and assured them that “everyone puts their foot in their mouth sometimes” and that I do not hold anything they may or may not have said in relation to my character against them.
They assure me that they never meant to make me or Maddie unwelcome and that they love me and they love Maddie and consider us friends even though we’ve only known each other a short while; that they appreciated my response.
I go to work. I occasionally check my phone (as one does) and notice that they are still in vc with Kane. I still think it’s weird to be on voice call for hours during the morning and day hours during the weekdays but quite frankly I had other things to focus on and didn’t think much of it.
Then, a message is put in the “Call of Deep” category of the discord server. Jesse informed the group that “things had come up and they no longer felt comfortable dming this campaign”.
I see this message, and then several minutes later and I am no longer able to see that category. At first I thought it was deleted, but upon clicking on Jesse and Kane’s profiles in the discord server I could still see that they were in the ‘call of the deep’ voice call channel. I figure they wanted a private conversation and I left it to rest. Maddie was distressed because she thought it was all her fault that they canceled the campaign; that setting a boundary with them had elicited this response from Jesse. I reached out to them to poke around and see if that was the case and they assured me in no uncertain terms that it was not. “Hey, it’s not actually related to that! It’s something else I don’t feel super at liberty to talk about rn”
That “thing” they weren’t “super at liberty” to talk about right now, in hindsight, was me! I obviously didn’t know that at the time. I accepted that answer and went about my day.
Later in said day, I want to say around 3-4pm, I notice that the entire server is gone. I try to reach out to Cassidy (server owner): blocked. I try to contact Kane: wouldn’t you know it, I’m blocked! Lastly, already knowing what is about to happen, I try to contact my dear friend, Jesse. I’m so sure you can guess what happened: I found that I was blocked.
I am sure I do not need to state to you all how utterly blindsided I was by this. I did DM Cassidy on her reddit account in my panic, but ended up blocking her after sending the message. (It was something along the lines of “Hey what on earth happened?” Followed by “Jesus, I actually don’t care” before I blocked her account.) I went through and blocked them all back on discord and closed our DMs so I didn’t have to see it. I also blocked Anita and Penny for good measure. Maddie was just as confused as I was- to us at the moment, it seemed like Jesse had twisted our words or told Kane and Cassidy some made up story about the argument they’d had with Maddie and got us both kicked from the server as a result. It was an incredibly upsetting thing to have happened- and incredibly confusing, considering both our conversations with this person ended on a civil (if not positive) note.
It was only going to get more upsetting. Maddie eventually discovered that she was not blocked by Jesse and, of course, asked what had happened. Again, this was not a conversation I participated in (obviously) so I will leave it to Maddie to recount this conversation as well.
“Quote: “Kane did the math and decided they weren’t comfortable roleplaying your romance rp character [friend’s character’s wife], that you were doing, at minimum, RRP with right when you turned 18. The whole thing reeked of like, children being involved in rp stuff and then shoving that character onto Kane, we talked about it and decided that the lack of honesty was unfair to Kane and to the rest of the group and then Kane decided that the game wouldn’t continue. The server was deleted and they decided it was prudent not to give you a means to communicate.
“I didn’t block you because i have no beef and i wanted to give you the chance to reach out and get some explanation, but we were al kinda sketched by the fact that you had romance rp stuff going on between a fresh 18 year old and a 22 year old”
The conversation wrapped up civilly from there, with Jesse stating that ‘ghosting was the least mad i could get them’.”
I was not 22 years old when we started shipping our characters. I was 21. I was 4-5 months from turning 22, if that fucking matters. I don’t see why it should. I wouldn’t even call what we were doing at the time ‘rrp’ (which is such a dumb fucking phrase, by the way) as I feel that phrase implies that our rp interactions were specifically to fulfill some kind of romantic fulfillment. It wasn’t- it was a shared story arc in a public group rp on a community discord server.- that, by the way, was incredibly well-moderated for the safety of the members as there were actual minors in the server. Everything was family friendly, SFW- whatever you want to call it. Our characters had closer relationships with other characters in this group rp as well. It wasn’t not a specific ‘romance’ thing. Both Maddie and I have clear boundaries between ourselves and our characters and just wanted to collaborate to tell a story. (Something this group would have known if they had bothered to ask before assuming.)
As an side, however, Maddie was 18 fucking years old. She could gamble, enlist in the military, rent her own apartment, move across- or out of- the country, smoke, etc. She was a high school graduate and enrolled in college. She was not a child and she could have dated other 21, 22, 23 year olds at her campus. I agree that it would have been creepy for me to have formed a friendship with Maddie if I had been like, 35. At the age of 25 I wouldn’t reach out to form a friendship with an 18 year old girl over the internet. However, I was 21. Neither of us before this incident have ever given any thought to our ages.
This was also literally 4 years ago- she’s 22 years old now. The fact they took it upon themselves to “do the math” on our friendship is so incredibly invasive and such an overstep that the fact they saw me as “icky” or “sketchy” for having formed a friendship and done “rrp” with Maddie is actually laughable.
This is also shared with her explicit permission, but Maddie is a twice over victim of online grooming, as a much younger teenager by much older people. They feel both disgusted and disrespected by the trivialization of their actual lived experience by making the implication that there was any sort of predatory or grooming aspect to our friendship.
I personally am appalled that, after being as kind as I could to these people, that they would make such heinous evaluations of my character and put so many implications on my friendship with Maddie. Did they think we were in some way romantically involved? Did they think I sought Maddie out as a minor specifically to groom them for romantic and sexual roleplay scenarios, and then wanted to recreate that with Kane for my own romantic fulfillment? I’ve spent the past 48 hours feeling genuinely sick.
For my part, however, I am so sad to have made Kane uncomfortable and I realize why they would have been. It would have been incredibly easy for them to just TELL ME they were uncomfortable with or disliked certain aspects of my character’s backstory. I would have been more than happy to change things, omit the “wife” plothook- whatever. The fact they could not directly communicate their feelings is A) not my problem B) a skill issue on their part. I want to clarify the wife plothook was included to A) give my character a motivation relating to her backstory B) keep others from trying to form a romance with my character (as I did not want to do arcs involving romance during my first dnd campaign, despite what they evidently thought- I guess that this was a poor way of trying to achieve that goal, though.) C) just because I liked the fucking character. Having Maddie’s character in my character’s backstory was not a “deal breaker” for me at ALL. Not to mention all of this was so new to me. My only other dnd experience was a jokey new years eve oneshot when I was 19. I wanted to be a good player so badly and would have welcomed any feedback or criticism.
I don’t know if they’ll see this post. I went through and blocked at least two of these people on every social of theirs that I knew of, as I quite frankly do not ever want to encounter them again, but this is a throwaway, so who knows. If they do see this, however, I have this to say directly to them:
You specifically did not want to give me the chance to defend myself against the disgusting and baseless things you said about me, but that’s not a call you get to make. I couldn’t do so in a private conversation with any of you, so I’m going to air it all out here in a public forum instead. You’re apparently so concerned for Maddie and I’s friendship that you would go so far as to delete the campaign and tell her how ‘ick’ and ‘sketch’ it was that we starting shipping our characters at 18 and 21 (you said 22, I’d like to inform you that your math was off, bestie!) but you put my supposed ‘victim’ in a situation where they had to defend me, the supposed ‘predator’? If any of your accusations were actually true, that would be so incredibly sick. It’s already actually pretty messed up to have put Maddie in that situation multiple times even without the context of your accusations against me. I seriously hope you self-reflect and get the help that all three of you clearly need. Please take a break from your computer (You especially, Jesse!) and go touch some grass. Love you besties xo xo!!!
Anyway, I hope that the interpersonal dnd drama bullshit that has consumed the past week of my life has entertained you all. I did see on lfg that they’re recruiting for a new campaign, so I hope my experience isn't repeated by someone else. Again, the screenshots that Maddie and I have are available upon request. You all can think whatever you want about me. I know where I went wrong and I know I am not perfect nor am I blameless here; I genuinely feel terrible that I made Kane so uncomfortable with my character and her backstory. I just wish they had told me so I could have fixed it. In my opinion, this pales however to the way they immediately jumped to the worst conclusions about me as a person when I had been nothing but kind to them all. I will not be playing another ttrpg for a very long time. This is not an experience I care to repeat.

2024.05.10 22:23 alwayshungryandcold Tips and reflection from a graduate student who is done

Take it for what it's worth but here are some things I have learnt from 9 years of grad school and undergrad that I wish someone told me, of course take it in context and they are not 100% true at all times in all contexts
  1. the institution is actually apathetic toward most things. It controls your life to some degree and will do things you disagree with or make you do it, just accept it. You'll leave one day. The 'real world' is not always better anyway.
  2. Most of your instructors and TAs are also apathetic. Some are mean, some are nice. That is not the same as competent or helpful. If you can find a prof or TA or whatever who is actually invested in you or your success. Keep in touch with them. It's easy, just schedule a coffee chat every year or something. Most students forget about the prof when the class ends so the helpful profs are usually happy to keep in touch. Similar ideas apply to your classmates. Many are nice, some are annoying, a few you actually will benefit from spending time with after graduation. You will meet brillant classmates as well. Learn as much as you can from them.
2a) Many profs are made to be leaders when they don't have leadership skills or training. Many of them wish they weren't leaders. Remember that when they do something you disagree with.
3) Stop complaining about stress and lack of social life and do something about it. Hart House is a great place to meet new ppl outside your department you won't meet otherwise and to learn new skills in the meantime. Truly one of the things I will miss about UT.
4) Your employer probably does not care about your research or course grades unless you are extemely talented or extremely incompetent (and of course if you wanna work in academia). They care even less that you went to one of the best school in the world.
5) Make your own opportunities. The school will not hand them to you on a platter. Many of the opportunities I got came from outside university.
6) your employer probably wants skills, knowledge is much easier to learn once you're in
7) Many things you try will fail, just do better next time
8) Grades can be quite arbitrary. As a STEM person, I have got C's in courses I worked extremely hard in and As in course that I didn't study for before writing the exam. I wrote a paper where my TA said if she graded it, would have given me enough marks to bump me up a letter grade. Too bad someone else marked it.
9) enjoy the ridiculous moments. I had a friend in undergrad who corrected the prof multiple times in front of the class because the prof didn't know what he was talking about and tried to pretend he did. Still makes me smile. Many profs are not here for their knowledge or expertise but for something else.
10) Many who are here don't deserve to be here. Many who are not here deserve to be here.
11) Milk your student status for what it's worth. Coffee chats with professionals who would not talk to strangers otherwise. Student discounts? Free food? It only last for a few years.
12) Attending class is optional. Learning is not. You all know the classes where the instructor wastes your time. Don't complain you didn't learn. You're in university. Learn to teach yourself. It's a lifelong skill that will pay back dividends.
13) If you ever become a TA or a prof. Be the person you wish they were to you.
14) always ask if a job people want you to do is paid or compensated.
15) beware of exaggerations and people who contribute to them. Tends to happen in university in a covert manner. Also beware of ppl who like to simplify complex issues.
16) Don't reject opportunities, but also learn to say no. Both to others and to yourself. Your time becomes more valuable the older you get. At the same time, be more efficient with your time.
17) Always try your best. But sometimes that means giving up on something else. Somethings are not worth doing
18) There many different forms of knowledge. What you learn in university classes is only one type of knowledge.
19) Most of what you do here doesn't matter in the end. You will probably forget about it a year from now.
20) If you are not uncomfortable with something new you are probably not learning enough. Similarly, if you are one of the smartest persons in the room, you might benefit from leaving.
21) Help your fellow student, even if they won't/can't repay you, even if it leaves you at a disadvantage. Think back to people who did the same for you
22) Don't go home immediately when class ends. You'll miss the university experience for what it's worth. Much of your learning takes place outside the classroom.
23) Fair is not just, just is not fair. Don't let either stop you from doing the right thing.
24) If you have nothing to do, sleep or exercise. Those are rarely wastes of time.
25) Be open to criticism of yourself, both from others and yourself
26) be humble. I had a prof who made fun of arts students constantly since they have a reputation for being bad at math. Turns out the prof couldn't do 1st year stats to save their life. I have friends with BAs who published in CS and Science journals. I have friends with BAs that STEM profs ask for help from with software and technology. Think ML and GIS
27) if ppl want you to spend time with you, they will usually let you know
28) work sucks. Start it early anyway
29) it's easy to complain. Find a reason to smile and be thankful instead. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable

2024.05.10 21:36 Starquilled1205 [F4A] Spring Spirit Brightens Your Day [nature spirit] [spring] [mythical] [uplifting]

F4A Spring Spirit Brightens Your Day

This is the third of a little series about four seasonal spirits interacting with a special human who can see them and converse with them. As the children of Mother Earth herself, they decided to find a lonely human child to befriend. They chose the listener many years ago when they were only a small child. No one else can see the spirits but the listener.
Listener has come outside to find Spring, who has a lot of inspiring things (and puns) to say and happy things to show them.
free to monetize! to credit, just link to my YT channel! (found in my profile) Thanks! :D free to genderbend! Location/ambience: spring forest ambience, farm sounds, birds, baby farm animals, breeze Listener: stressed young worker, has known the spirit since childhood Voice: childlike, feminine, light, airy, innocent Theme: starting new, potential, spring things!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Begins with spring bird ambience, gentle breeze, and distant traffic hum
(brightly) Ah, finally! There’s my best bud! It’s so good to see you again! Yeah, yeah, I made it! Again!
You’re a little bit late… don’t tell me, are you getting too busy again? Cause if you are, I’ll have to find a way to fix that again, won't I? You really can't moss around with that! (chuckle)
But anyway! Come on, let’s go! I have so much to show you! I wanna walk to the farm - some of the sheep had their babies and there’s little chicks running around! Oh, AND there’s a calf! It’s so small and cute!
We have to walk the forest way because there’s something in the woods I want to show you as well. C’mon!
Look at all the dandelions… Good to see some still popping up all around!
This one is so big… oh and look at this one! The stem is SO LONG! I think it would be perfect for… hold on… hold still… there! There you go - one perfect flower on one perfect person!
Hehehe! You look really cute with a dandelion tucked into your ear, you should go out like that more often hehe. Oh, let me get another one! Then we can match!
There we go, how do I look?
(flustered) Awww,, hahaha, thank you.
Dandelions are one of my favourite spring flowers. I better not ever catch you calling them weeds! They are one of the first flowers for the bees when they come out of hibernating. Bumble bees and honey bees search for them as soon as they wake up. That’s why I get so upset when people mow them all down and spray their so-called “weed-killers.” Who are they to call these perfect little drops of sunshine weeds**?** (whispering) UnbeLEAFable.
I’m glad YOU’RE not a weed!
(laughs)
Oh! Over there! look at those daffodils and hyacinths! UWAAA I just love the colors mixed together… yellow, pink, and purple and green…
Eh?! ME?! They remind you of me? (flustered again) B… but that - well, you’re really sweet yourself, you know that?
Yes you are! Don’t “no you” me! Hehe
What are your favourite spring flowers?
Oh! Yeah those are top on my list too! Well you know I like them all though… (sigh)
This year the crocuses are standing out to me. They remind me of little stars in the grass when they first come up! Stars of all different colors! Coming up out of the ground like “Hey guys, Winter’s gunna leave soon! Spring is coming!”
Remember that house on the road to your school when you were little? How every spring, the ENTIRE YARD was just COVERED in purple and yellow crocuses? Mhhm! It was so magical!!
I love the cherry trees when they blossom all rosy and pink! Oh, and who can forget the forsythia bushes! Have you SEEN them this year? I’m so proud of them! I haven’t seen them this full and bright for several years! Winter really went easy on you guys this year, didn’t she… Unless…
(pause)
Hhm? Oh! Nothing! Ah, hear that?
How many birds can you hear right now? There’s so many! Can you identify a few of them? How about…. That one?
Right! Robins! American robins, to be specific. The European robins aren’t actually robins at all - they’re a type of flycatcher and American robins are actually in the thrush family. Have you ever seen a wood thrush? They’re robin sized, but instead of having an orange belly, they have little black speckles. Really cute little birds, but a lot harder to notice than the robins because they like to stay deep in the forests and away from lots of people.
How about…. THAT song? What bird is that?
Right on! Goldfinches! Yes, and bluebirds and cardinals too, well done! I’m glad you can still recognise the sound of the cardinals! They have a bunch of different calls, don’t they? Remember when I taught you how to whistle just like them? Can you still do it?
Ahahaha that’s ok! We’ve got plenty of time to practice again before Summer comes!
Hhmph! She better not rush me out of here like she did last year! I want my turn here with you and I don’t want it to end early.
Hey - can you smell that? We’re getting closer to the place I wanted to show you. We gotta cut through the woods though, come on!
Here we are… What do you think? This little pond clearing has been a quiet little nature secret for a long time, but since you live close to it now, I wanted to show it to you. You deserve to know it’s here.
There are so many flowers we could smell them all the way from the footpath.
Wanna know how they all got here? Well… some people planted them. A long, LONG time ago. This place used to be a farm. It wasn’t always a thick woodland like this, the trees have grown since then. That’s why there’s flowers everywhere. When it was still just a little farm, there were only a few of these daffodils… but daffodils reproduce wildly if you don’t stop them. It’s been hundreds of years since anyone has cared for this tiny piece of land… so this carpet of flowers has been able to grow and grow and grow. Truly one of mother’s masterpieces, wouldn’t you say? Someone decided to brighten their garden… and Mother Nature took over the art that person started way back then. If only they could see how beautiful it is today!
You can actually see where the foundation of the house was right over here, not far from the pond. It’s nothing more than a square of crumbled rock, but if you look at it, it’s obvious it used to be a building. I just had to show this place to you! It could be like our secret meeting place, as long as you don’t tell anyone else!
Wanna meet here everyday? Well, till it’s time for me to move on, anyway? You could use the time to relax! I see those tired bags under your eyes, silly! You’ve been doing too much grown up work again!
Oh… hard time sleeping?
Oh my gourd, that’s not enough sleep!
Looks like I will have to take action. Hhmm…. Let’s see… I know you always sleep better with your window open, but with Winter around it’s too cold for that.. But now it’s MY turn to bring you my blessings! Alright. I’ll be sure to make it warm for the next couple nights so you can catch those Z’s!
Oh… speaking of blessings… I have something else to show you back here! Gotta be nice a quiet though. Right this way… nice and slow…
There she is. A little fawn, all speckly in the sunlight. Don’t worry, her momma is right over there. You didn’t notice? HAha, that’s actually a really good thing. Momma dear, your camouflage skills are doing great! Come on over here, don’t worry. I am the spirit of Spring, and this is my friend! We won’t hurt you or your baby.
Your baby is so beautiful and cute! Could we come a little closer and say hello to her?
That’s so kind of you!
Hi little deer! Your momma picked a lovely place for you to rest and stay safe. You’re… you’re so cute!
Go on, go ahead and say hi, let her sniff you. Look at her cute little spots… just like little beams of sun resting on the forest floor.
Thank you, momma deer, for letting us say hi to you and your gorgeous baby! You guys go have a good day - there’s a patch of fresh grass down in the valley just past those pines over there. No humans will bother you there. Bye bye, “Iris” you a lovely day. Haha. I wonder if the deer think it's funny…
And that is my favourite part. I get to meet all the new baby animals! I wish I could take you with me wherever I go… and show you ALL the baby animals! Bunnies, fox kits, fishes, mice, owls, hawks… every new life is just so precious. Out in the wilder places there are cougar kittens, bear cubs, wolf pups, monkeys, koalas, badgers… tigers… little kangaroo joeys… and of course the whales!
You would absolutely LOVE the cougar kittens! They are so fluffy and sassy! And… if you ever get the chance to see a baby whale… they are just the dearest things!
I could talk about baby animals all day, but rather than just talk about them, let’s go and see some! The farm isn’t far from here. Come on, let's go!
Uwaaaa look at these azalea bushes!! I’m so excited they’ve started to bloom! Remember when you were little you used to pretend little fairies lived in the flowers? Haha! We used to spin around together in your yard and pretend they were flying all around us.
Oh did you hear that? We’re getting closer!
See? There’s the little lambs! Look at them go, romping around each other. They look so fluffy and soft! Have you ever touched a lamb before? They are so soft and curly! Oh! Those two see us! Here they come! Oopsie daisy, don’t slip in the mud, little guys!
Hello little lambs! You’re so friendly! Looks like you’ll get to pet them! They seem to really like you, that one is sticking his head through the fence!
Haha. you’re so cute.
Yeah, you. Ah! I mean! The lambs are cute! But you are too… (flustered)
Ahaha… anyway, let’s go up here! You can see the little chicks! Look at them all… They have quite the variety this year! The dark ones…. The ones that are almost black, kinda gray? They’re gunna grow up to be black and white like their momma! I think you guys call them Plymoth Rock chickens? Yeah, and the yellow ones are gunna be brown. The darker golden ones look like… I think the mom is called a Rhode Island Red. I really do have a special love for chickens.
Ohp! Look at all the chicks, rushing to their mommas… hiding under their wings… What in carnation? I wonder what - Oh.
A hawk… a red-shouldered hawk! The hens saw it before we did and called their chicks to them to protect them. Such good mothers they are…
Sounds like that hawk isn’t hunting right now though. It seems to be establishing its territory. I wonder where its nest is? It probably has its own babies to feed and protect.
Aha! Did you see that? Over there, under that stump. There! A chipmunk! Oh wait there’s two! I bet they’re a mom and a dad, or will be soon! They are most certainly making a nest. That one is carrying leaves inside! Good luck little chipmunks! They’re so cute.
(sigh) I could watch them all day.
What’s that? Ah, yeah it’s going to rain. We should probably start heading back before you get all wet - unless you want to get drenched? Haha! Might be fun to dance in the rain! However… it’s not summer yet, there’s still a chill left over from Winter… I wouldn’t want you catching a cold. Don’t worry, we can take our time!
So… what’s been keeping you up at night?
(pause, listening)
Mhhm, I see.
That would keep me up at night too! But… luckily for you, your favourite Season is back again, and she has some encourage-MINT for you! Hehe. First things first, you gotta take more deep breaths. Not inside - outside. When you notice you’re starting to get tense… and that situation you think about all night comes up, stop right there in your tracks and take a quick step outside. Or a long step. Whatever you need. Breathe in the air, and think about it. How it feels, how it smells. Is it wet air? Or dry air? What do you smell? See if you can pick out three different smells. Then look all around you, and find something red. Oh! Let’s try it right now. I’ll demonstrate.
(clears throat and takes a very deep breath)
The air is cool and damp… it smells like… fresh earth, hyacinths, and oak tree buds.
And now for the colors! Something red… there’s not many bright colors out here yet… Ah! There’s a cardinal right over there! See him? Over there in that bush. So handsome…
Ok, now we have to find something orange. Hhmm… Oh? Where… OH! Aha! Yep! Those tulips! Good eye! Alright, next color is yellow. Yep, we’re going through the rainbow.
There’s a lot of yellow out here right now. Which one thing are you going to pick?
Buttercups! Oh - well, actually those aren’t buttercups, and I’m a little bit surprised. This here is Eranthis. It’s also known as Winter Aconite, and usually it’s done blooming by now. I’m happy you picked this. I don’t know if you’ll remember… but the first time I met you… way back when you were such a little kid… it was on the side of a road, in a young forest at the end of Winter’s time.
You and your parents were on a trip, and got lost. They pulled over to look at a map, and you were let out to stretch your legs. You wandered right into the woods… and found the beds of blooming eranthis. I knew you were special… the sparkling in your eyes as you gazed all around you… I knew we’d be friends.
(quiet pause)
You know what color is next, right? Mhhm. Green.
Haha what’s taking you so long? There’s so many green things! You’re so picky!
You… you have such a good eye. Look at all that moss… you know moss makes the best beds… AND it’s nice to walk on! You’d know if you took off those clunky shoes. Cmon, off they go! There’s so much moss here, you won’t hurt your feet! Walking barefoot is good for your sole!
Hehehe… both soles. Your soul, and your sole**. You’re** foot sole. (giggle)
You should definitely go barefoot more.
Ahhh see? Nice and soft! Better than a rug.
Next color - blue! This one could be tricky. The rain clouds are covering up the sky, so you can’t pick that.
Wha- what? You do? What is it? What do you see? Speak now or forever hold your peas!
A blue bird! I didn’t even see him up there! (chuckles) well done, bud.
Yep, purple is next. I see some periwinkles over here under this tree. Periwinkle is a shade of purple! I think it counts.
So now that we went through all the colors… lets touch some stuff. That’s step #3. You have to find 3 different surfaces and touch them, thinking about how they feel under your fingers. I’m gunna feel this fence… careful though, don’t want to get splinters. Think about the texture in detail. Next I’m gunna feel the daffodil leaves here. Smooth and soft. You pick the third thing! Wha - m… my hand?! But… well, I guess that’s ok… here…
Well, how does it feel?
I - well… I guess my skin is… I’m the spirit of spring! I can’t have my skin all crusty and musty! Alright, well… um… thank you. I suppose you also have really nice hands. Eh?! No! I aint dandy-lion about it!
Anyway… So uh… s-since we smelled, looked around, and touched, it’s time to find three different sounds. I’ll go first again. I hear… the traffic in the distance, the wind blowing through the branches… and… now your turn.
My voice?! Why you… well… I mean you DO hear it… Alright alright I think we’ve finished the sensory grounding thing! And look at that, we’re almost back at your place -
Hhm?
I missed one?
Oh… taste… well, that’s not one you could do out here. I mean you COULD, but you’d have to find something to taste, and I know for a fact there isn’t anything out here you’d find pleasant to taste. So I skipped that one. But if you can, that’s the 5th thing to do when you’re stressed.
As for my other advice for you… look at me. It’s spring time! The world is coming alive all around you… follow its lead and branch out. Take that leaf of faith you’ve been shying away from. It’s time for new opportunities - go ahead and grow where you’re planted - you’ve got so “mush”room to climb higher and higher.
And don’t forget… I’m rooting for ya!
