My Honest Review of Dark Souls 3

2024.05.06 09:26 Cambronian717 My Honest Review of Dark Souls 3

Before I get started, I want to say that I recognize that this is a good game. I’m about to rag on it for a while but most of it is personal. Don’t take most of this as an objective review. I can recognize that the game is good even if it isn’t for me. Also, don’t feel obligated or anything to comment. I am mainly doing this to record my own thoughts and maybe get some feedback from the community.
This game is hard. Not just in game difficulty. I mean that it is hard to do justice in words. My first souls experience was Elden Ring and it has since become one of my favorite games of all time. Sekiro was my second and has gotten even higher on my list (I will try to avoid comparing DS3 to Sekiro as it is so different though). When Armored Core 6 came out, I fell in love with it as well. Needless to say, the last couple years I have fallen into a Fromsoftware craze. This inevitably led to me playing Dark Souls 3.
I decided to start with 3 as 1 just looked and felt too slow for me right now and 2 honestly out of what others have said about it. 3 seemed the closest to the games I have really enjoyed, so I thought I would go for it next. Now for context, I am not a huge Souls like fan. I just don’t vibe with the gameplay typically. Elden Ring being the chief exception. But, I assumed that this game could be another exception as everywhere you look you see praise for it.
This game, unfortunately, has not lived up to that reputation in my eyes. It had its high points and certainly its lows, but regardless, I never fell in love like I did with the others. There was no point where this game clicked like in Elden Ring and instead was a near constant king in the balls with no reward.
Let’s start with so good things though. The level design is top notch. I adore the mazes for the most part. The areas are gorgeous. The bleeding sun in the latter half, all of Lothric Castle, the entirety of Boreal Valley, Dragon Peak, all fantastic areas both visually and in their layouts. I can only think of a couple areas that were a pain to get through, but they were few and far between.
Another pro for the game is the enemy design. Note, I am not talking about bosses here. The general enemies, for the most part felt good to fight. There were a few exceptions like the bird ninjas in the Painted World, but overall very enjoyable. My personal favorite is the eclipse knights in ringed city. Awesome area by the way. But yeah, overall, the normal enemies and variety were very good.
Now to get into the parts that are a bit mixed. This is where I think a lot of people may disagree with me. The bossfights. For this first part, I simply want to give a brief rundown of the bosses I fought. There will be a couple I expand on for reasons you will see, but most will be brief.
Iudex Gundyr: fun opener, nothing too special, but nothing wrong either. 1 attempt.
Vordt: again, nothing really of note. A fine boss for the early game. 3 attempts.
Cursed Greatwood: not sure why this guy was here honestly. Bit of a waste but nothing egregious I suppose. 1 attempt.
Crystal Sage: I actually liked this fight. It is a bit gimmicky, but I thought it was an interesting puzzle. 4 attempts.
It should be noted that from here on out, I am using the Irithyll Straight Sword. Yes, I really mean until the end. I’m sure a lot of you read that and are thinking “he’s going to deal 0 damage to the late game bosses”. You are not entirely wrong, but I will address my view on that later.
Deacons: cool concept, but crowd bosses are always a bit rough. Again, not too offensive in any way, but not amazing. 2 attempts
Abyss Watchers: I thought it was a fine fight. Phase 1 was creative with the watchers all fighting each other and phase 2 was alright, but I never thought it was a great fight. Not bad, just ok. 9 attempts
Old Demon King: I thought this was pretty cool. The use of fire in the fight along with the melee from the boss felt pretty good. 5 attempts.
Wolnir: similar to Deacons. It’s an interesting concept that was executed well, but I don’t think it really works. Cool ideas, just not great for this game I thought. 1 attempt
Pontiff: this is where I started to really lose any love I had for this game. I am not a fan of duo fights in these games. I believe that a good bossfight should be two strong individuals dueling to see who truly is the best. Pontiff was close to being a great fight, but I am sure you know where I am going. His clone attack is horrendous to me. The way they cover each other constantly, the way I could never find an opening, I just never understood this fight. In other tough fights like Radagon, Malenia, or Isshin, there was a moment where I felt like I truly knew what to do, and just had to execute. At no point did I feel that with Pontiff. In the 10 hours it took for me to beat him, I never felt like I understood the fight. It did not feel good to overcome him, it just felt hollow, like I got lucky.
Aldrich: I beat him very quickly and honestly didn’t have time to make a review. 1 attempt.
Yhorm: an absolute disappointment. I am not opposed to gimmick fights, but once I used the storm ruler, it was just too strong. This guy is a living legend apparently and he fell in four hits. I’ve been told that fighting him without the sword is much more fun, but I killed him so quick that I didn’t even have the chance to think about it. 4 attempts
Dancer: I don’t get the love for this boss. Many of her attacks felt like they came out of nowhere and were completely undodgable at times. Some of her combos like her spin move just went on for way too long to me. She felt mediocre at best and unfair at worst. 23 attempts.
Dragonslayer Armor: fun. Not too complex, a decent fight. 4 attempts.
Lothric twins: again, pretty good. A rare good “duo” in my book. Not too much to say, it is a pretty straightforward fight, but not bad. 26 attempts.
Oceiras: This is where I'll put this out there, I have zero idea what is happening in this game story wise. I know Fromsoft likes to make things ambiguous and hard to find, but man was it bad in this game. In Elden Ring, on a blind run, I was able to at least figure out some basic things like my goal, my reasoning, some of the lore, stuff like that. I wanted to bring this up here because I feel like Oceiras has a lot going on that is just entirely left unknown. I'll expand more on that later, but as a boss, he again was mediocre. 3 attempts.
Champion Gundyr: This boss was very close to being good in my view. I like faster pace bossfights which he definitely is. He is constantly aggro and leaves very little breathing room. I enjoyed that, but the fight itself never really clicked. I made it through though. 14 attempts.
Nameless King: up to this point, this was easily the best boss in the game for me. The first phase was creative but not insufferable. The second phase was where he shined though.I can see where the seeds for some of my favorite Elden Ring bosses were planted because King acts pretty similarly to what I have enjoyed previously. Overall, very good fight. 7 attempts.
Soul of Cinder: I loved the music and the fight was alright to pair. Atmosphere was good, overall just a nice fight. Nowhere near something like Radagon or Allmind to me, but still an enjoyable final fight.
I have decided to put the DLC bosses here because they are some of the most polarizing bosses I have ever fought. Everything was fought before Soul of Cinder and after the lothric princes.
Ashes of Ariandel: Up to this point, I cannot say I had really been having fun in this game. I had my high moments sure, but nothing stuck. I was mainly indifferent if not frustrated. I know I have listed some good aspects of the game, but something about this game just did not work. This DLC broke me.
To start, I am not even going to be bothered with that gravetender boss. I tried for about an hour and then realized that this fight is probably the most horrendous thing I have ever done, so I left, and I feel no shame about it. The village at the bottom of the hill is almost my least favorite area in the entire series, beaten only by Irithyll Dungeon. The enemy designs in this are some of the worst in the game. The opening lever to the final boss is hidden on a random pillar in a random room with zero noticeable markings.
Now, that we've made it through all of that. It is time to go over probably the most frustrating thing I have ever done. Sister Friede.
I have never been as frustrated or as demotivated by a video game as I was in the 8 hours it took me to beat Sister Friede. I despise almost everything about her so I have decided to break down her fight to go over everything that is wrong with it. Spoiler alert, it is mostly because of the horrendous phase 2.
Phase 1: This phase is WAY too slow. Even when playing as aggressive as possible, she just kept dodging and stalling. Remember, I also am using what I know now to be a pretty underpowered weapon, so my damage is not great. That however, never bothered me. I will go more in depth on that in the Ringed City section, but just know that this first phase took what felt like a really long time. Eventually I was able to learn the attacks, but the fight never sped up. It is not my style, but at least it felt fair.
Phase 2: I fucking hate this phase. at least 75% of my time on this fight was spent banging my head against phase 2. I despise it. Having Ariandel constantly just slamming his bowl on the ground while Friede just spams ice from the far corner is so horrendous. Then, just when you think there is going to be an opening, now Ariandel spews fire all over forcing you to go around, just in time for Friede to start spamming again of course. The way they cover each other CONSTANTLY. The fact that the ice can frostbite you without even actually having a hitbox yet. Ariandel just dropping lava all over the ground once you finally get a chance to hit him. I cannot stand it. It is insufferable and when I beat it I popped off so hard my neighbors texted saying good job. Oh how I wish I had been recording myself in that moment because my face sunk so fast it would put the titanic to shame.
Phase 3: Funnily enough, this is probably the best phase of the whole fight. It is finally a dance, like a good fight should be. Unfortunately for me, I don't think I saw this phase more than 8 times. Yes, in 8 hours, I only made it past phase 2 maybe 8 times before I finally beat it.
In short, I hate Friede. Phase 2 as it stands should be cut entirely. Phase 1 should be tweaked, and Phase 3 should be left as is. If this fight were just phases 1 and 3, it would be an infinitely better experience. Even then, I don't think I would have enjoyed this fight that much, but it would have never gotten to the genuine anger that I felt at points. Is that immature? maybe. All I know is that at this point in my experience, I was playing mainly out of spite. I was not having fun, I just needed to finish this for my own sake. I do not think I will ever be doing this fight again.
Time for Ringed City DLC. Let me just start by saying, this DLC is SO much better than the previous. The visuals are better, the enemies are better, the bosses are better (we'll get to that), if I could get rid of Ashes and just have Ringed City, I would. That being said, it did start off rough.
Demon Prince was an annoying fight. Not Friede levels of annoying, but definitely not my favorite fight. As I mentioned earlier, I really do not like Duo fights. I ended up summoning Gael to help me simply because at this point, I could not be bothered to respect this boss. The second problem for me was the healthpool. That however was mainly my fault. Again, I have learned that my weapon was not the best, especially against a boss that does not take frost damage. However, damage is not my main worry in a fight, something which will become apparent at Gael.
Ringed City as an area was really cool. No real problems there.
Halflight: Basically just Fia's Champions before it was cool. I did not struggle. Fine experience.
Now it is time for the moment we've all been waiting for. Thankfully, we finally made it to a fight that delivered.
Slave Knight Gael is very likely my favorite bossfight of all time. The only souls boss that even comes close for me is Radagon. Everything about Gael is awesome. It is everything I want and everything I had been asking for this whole game. A true 1v1 Showdown between two strong characters fight to see who is better. There are no bullshit moves, it is a completely fair fight. It is tough, it is unrelenting, but it is fair. Everything is clean. This also where I will make my case that damage is not what matters in these games. I was dealing 170 damage per hit with my basic R1 attacks. By every metric, that is a horrible damage output. Just like on Demon Prince, I was basically tickling the boss. Despite this, I was having fun. Real, genuine fun. And it wasn't just fun to beat him. The very essence of the fight was fun. It was fun to learn, fun to execute, hell it was fun to die. I even intentionally died when he was on low health just so I could do it one more time. Something like that would have been absurd to me on any other boss. This is the only time in the entirety of DS3 that I can say I had genuine fun. The only time where the game truly felt good to play. It did not matter that none of the story made sense. All the pain of Friede and Pontiff and Demons was gone. It was just him and me fighting at the end of the world. It was glorious. It made me sad when I was finished, not just because I know I cant't do it again, but because I now know that the whole game had this potential. It all could have been glorious, and yet here I am with nothing left. Just me, my 94 levels and the Irithyll Straight Sword that could.
As for the story, I have no clue what anything was supposed to mean. I simply killed because they tried to kill me first. I don't know what the Dark Soul is, why any of this matters, or even what my end goal was. The Fire Keeper's words in the ending as the world is fading away makes it seem like we are supposed to feel hope as what I assume is the world ending. The credits music sounds hopeful as if there will be a fresh start, but I don't even know what I am supposed to be hoping for. Maybe that is the point, who knows.
At the end of the day, I am glad Gael was at the end. At the very least, the journey has a capstone of gold. I do not think I will ever play this game again and I am confident that I will never play the other 2 souls games. Overall, this game just wasn't fun, and as much as I love Gael, I do not have the strength or the will to go through that hell again just to fight one fun boss. I wish I liked this game more, but it just never worked for me. I am glad that I finished if only because it is done. I wish I felt more fulfilled, more accomplished, but I don't. Nothing like I did with the other Fromsoft juggernauts of late. I'm glad so many have gotten so much enjoyment out of this game. I am just unfortunately not one. I am fine with that, but I wish I had been able to have more fun in this journey.

2024.05.05 19:52 Dashing2026 Women's soft power in society.

Whenever we hear the word patriarchy, it either wants to make the impression that how very few women are presidents, how very few women are CEOs, or how very few women are there in men dominated spaces or talking about violence against women etc. While all these above points make sense and are truthful, they ignore the larger picture of gender dynamics.
While having few women at top level management or in political fields can be concerning, still we can't ignore the fact that women do posses soft/cultural power to enforce gender norms(for their own benefit), and to influence the society and manipulate government policies.
Gender Norms: Gender norms have been changed a lot in 60-70 years but the change has happened visibly in women's gender norms. The world still looks at men as a provider and protector. The men still get shamed for not being a breadwinner and for not protecting women. Men still get shamed for not behaving in masculine manner and get shamed as toxic masculine if they dare to criticize women. Men are still considered as monsters, rapists and a threat in society. Men are still the majority of suicides, prison inmates, school dropouts, homeless, murder victims, and so on; If men are having power and privileges then why they're not working on these norms and many others? Are these norms beneficial to them?
The society: The society is patriarchal and misogynist but yet most of the time we will witness that society is harsher and shaming men as oppressors. If the power is in men's hands then why are they shaming themselves only? Why are they harsher with themselves only? Why are they dying to protect other people if they are oppressors? Why are they attempting suicides more if they are having power? Why are they behind education, their issues not getting recognised and facing legal challenges if they are the ruler?
The government: The government/political field is a male dominated field, the US has never seen a single woman president because it's a world created by men to benefit men yet we have never seen the government making policies to benefit men. The government provides many freebies to women, laws are extremely biased against men in some countries, men are facing challenges to build shelters for them, men are getting punished harshly for doing the same crime and also during crisis time they're not getting protected. How is it helping men?
Even if men make up 60% of senators and 90% of CEOs, they represent fewer than 20% of people who have power at home, and only 16% of people who have custody over their children. Women on average get their way socially, legally, at home, in the marriage and dating world, and in many other areas of life.
That represents a metric of power that is much more relevant to the vast majority of people. It is a form of power over your own life, and over the lives of other people who you know personally. For example, many relationships are controlled by women. Women also display much higher levels of social aggression and are more likely to get their way in gender mixed friends groups.
The fact that men often hold formal positions of power in society may even be because other people push them there for their own benefit. After all, it is more preferable to be the wife of a CEO than to be a CEO yourself. The vast majority of wealthy women do not work, do not cook, do not clean, and often times don't even raise their own children. They have chefs, maids, and babysitters who handle all of that. Many have vacation homes financed by their husbands where they go to sip margaritas all day long by the beach.
Meanwhile the average CEO works 80 hours a week under stressful conditions and ultimately does not have any power when he comes home: his wife can leave him, take his money, his children, and continue her privileged lifestyle without him. She can force him to continue working for her benefit regardless of any plans he might have to retire, and she can often dictate the terms and conditions that he gets to see his children under.
This is a rather bleak outlook despite being a "powerful CEO", which should make you wonder how much power a regular working man has.

2024.05.03 19:31 Lehrasap Tall buildings in Mecca Prophecy [A detailed Refutation of Deceptions and Dishonesty of Islamic apologists] .... A must-read issue.

Summary:

There are two sets of prophecies related to tall buildings in Islamic traditions:

The first set of Ahadith about Tall Buildings, along with accompanying prophecies

These are the two Ahadith that Islamists cite as evidence for the prophecy about tall buildings.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7121:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Hour will not be established (1) till two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same religious doctrine, (2) till about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), (3) till the religious knowledge is taken away (by the death of Religious scholars) (4) earthquakes will increase in number (5) time will pass quickly, (6) afflictions will appear, (7) Al-Harj, (i.e., killing) will increase, (8) till wealth will be in abundance ---- so abundant that a wealthy person will worry lest nobody should accept his Zakat, and whenever he will present it to someone, that person (to whom it will be offered) will say, 'I am not in need of it, (9) till the people compete with one another in constructing high buildings, (10) till a man when passing by a grave of someone will say, 'Would that I were in his place (11) and till the sun rises from the West.
Sunan Ibn Majah 63:
... he (the Prophet) said (about the signs of the last hour): 'When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress' (Waki' said: This means when non-Arabs (slave women) will give birth to Arabs") 'and when you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.'
Response:
The first issue with this so-called "prophecy" is that Muslims had already constructed impressive buildings during the Umayyad period (known for its distinctive architecture), long before the Hadith collections were compiled. This raises the question: can it truly be considered a prophecy?
Another problem is that this prophecy appears within a series of other predictions, many of which are demonstrably false. For the prophecy about tall buildings to hold, the other prophecies in the same series would also need to be true. Here's what the Hadith claims should occur but never did:
(1) Two large groups will fight each other, leading to a significant number of casualties on both sides, despite sharing the same religious doctrine.\ Comment: This is vague and likely refers to events that had already occurred before Ahadith were compiled. Therefore, it's not a prophecy.
(2) Around thirty false prophets (Dajjals) will emerge, each claiming to be Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).\ Comment: This scenario had already happened before Ahadith were compiled, indicating it's not a prophecy.
(3) Religious knowledge will diminish as religious scholars pass away.\ Comment: This is identified as a false prophecy, as there is no indication of a significant reduction in religious scholars leading to a loss of knowledge.
(4) The frequency of earthquakes will increase.\ Comment: Scientists assert that the observed increase in earthquakes is due to improved detection technology rather than an actual increase in frequency, suggesting this prophecy is incorrect.
(5) Time will seem to pass quickly.\ Comment: This observation is vague and subjective, with no clear metric to measure "quickly."
(6) Afflictions will become more frequent.\ Comment: This had already been observed during the initial wars among Muslims before Ahadith were compiled, suggesting it is not a new prophecy.
(7) Incidents of violence and killing (Al-Harj) will become more common.\ Comment: This observation is vague and challenging to evaluate, given many folds increase in population and societal dynamics.
(8) Wealth will become so abundant that wealthy people will struggle to find recipients for their Zakat, with potential beneficiaries refusing it because they don't need it.\ Comment: This seems to be a false prophecy, as there is no widespread evidence of excessive wealth leading to difficulty in distributing Zakat. In fact, people (especially Muslim countries) have become extremely poor and millions of Muslims are in need of Zakat today.
(9) People will compete with each other to construct tall buildings.\ Comment: This trend had already begun during Umayyad Caliphate, before this Hadith was written. Please read about Umayyad Architecture here. Moreover, none of the previous stated prophecies in this Hadith have been fulfilled.
(10) A man passing by a grave will wish he were in the deceased's place.\ Comment: This is speculative; it's not clear if or when this will happen on a large scale.
(11) The sun will rise from the West.\ Comment: This has not occurred, so it's not clear if or when it will happen, or if it absolutely doesn't happen.
(12) "When a slave woman gives birth to her mistress." (Waki' explained this as non-Arabs giving birth to Arab offspring.)\ Comment: It already happened long before the compilation of Ahadith when during the era of Umar Ibn Khattab, Arabs dominated non-Arabs and took their women as slaves, and it resulted in their Arabic speaking off-spring from those non-Arab slaves women. Secondly, the slavery has already been abolished in the whole world by the Western world. So, this Hadith is proven FALSE, as no more slave women are giving birth to their mistresses.
(13) When barefoot, naked, and destitute shepherds compete to construct tall buildings.\ Comment: The whole Arab were barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds before the capture of Persia and Africa. As soon as Islamic Caliphate and Arabs became richer and richer, they started making castles and high buildings. Please read about the Umayyad Architecture here. This happened before the compilation of Ahadith.
Also, consider that the Nabateans, known for Petra and other stunning structures, constructed buildings in the region centuries before Muhammad, some reaching heights comparable to the Colosseum in Rome. They also developed canals, tunnels, and intricate underground water systems well before that time. In the south, the Sabaeans constructed the city of Shibam with its iconic skyscrapers, the Maarib Dam, and the Ghundam Palace tower. Even the Quran mentions the people of 'Ad and Thamud, who built towering castles and structures, yet were punished for their arrogance, despite their impressive architecture (Quran 89: 6-9).

The 2nd Set of Ahadith: Tall buildings surpassing the tops of the mountains... OR ... buildings on mountain tops?

Islamists present the following tradition (source):
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) is reported to have said: “……When you see tunnels/canals being dug in Makkah Mukarramah and the buildings (of Makkah Mukarramah) higher than the peak of the mountains then know that Qiyamah is close.”
(Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 14306)
Response:
This Hadith has been misrepresented. A closer examination of similar traditions reveals that they actually refer to "buildings on top of mountains", not "tall buildings higher than the peak of mountains". This clarification becomes evident when we consider all the relevant Ahadith on this topic, which collectively provide ample clarity that the correct interpretation is indeed "buildings or houses on top of mountains".
Muṣṣanaf Ibn Abi Shayba [Vol. 5, no. 14289]
Ghunder narrated to us from Shu'ba from Ya'la ibn 'Ata' from his father, who said: "I was holding the reins of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr's mount, and he said, 'What will you do when you tear down this House (the Kaaba), leaving not one stone upon another?' They asked, 'While we are still Muslims?' He replied, 'Yes, while you are still Muslims.' I asked, 'Then what happens?' He replied, 'Then it will be rebuilt better than it ever was. When you see Mecca with its valleys dug through (canals or tunnels), and construction (buildings) rising above the tops of the mountains, know that the matter (a significant event or the Day of Judgment) is looming over you.'"
And other traditions are as under:
Kitāb al-Fitan [p. 22] Nu’aym ibn Ḥammād
Jarir ibn Abdul Hamid narrated to us from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Mujahid, from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them), that he saw a building on Mount Abu Qubays and said, "O Mujahid, when you see the houses of Mecca appear on its mountains and water flows in its streets, then take caution."
TafsirAbdar-Razzāq [Vol. 3, no. 2810]
نا عبد الرزاق عن معمر عن يزيد بن أبي زياد عن مجاهد عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال إذا رأيت البناء ارتفع إلى أبي قبيس وجرى الماء في الوادي فخذ حذرك
Abdul Razzak narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Mujahid, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, who said: "When you see construction reaching Mount Abu Qubays and water flowing in the valley, then take caution."
Akhbār Makkah, by al-Fākihi [Vol. 1, no. 699, Vol. 3, no. 1725 and 1728]

And my grandfather narrated to me from Muslim ibn Khalid from Ibn Khuthaym from Yusuf ibn Mahak, who said, "I was sitting with 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As in a corner of the Grand Mosque when he looked at a house overlooking Mount Abu Qubays and asked, 'Do you live in that house?' From Ya'la ibn 'Ata', from his father, who said: 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "What will you do when you tear down this House (the Kaaba), leaving not one stone upon another?" They asked, "While we are still Muslims?" He replied, "Yes, while you are still Muslims." They asked, "Then what happens?" He replied, "Then it will be rebuilt better than it ever was. And when you see Mecca with its valleys dug through and construction rising above the tops of the mountains, know that the matter (a significant event or the Day of Judgment) is looming over you."
Note 1:
The Umayyad governor Hajjaj bin Yusuf fired a catapult from the top of Mount Abu Qubais onto the Ka’bah during the siege of Makkah in 691 CE. Thus, Ka'bah had already been destroyed before the compilation of this Hadith.
Note 2:
Dykes and canals had also already been made in Mecca by earlier caliphs of Islam, before the compilation of Ahadith.
https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Mecca:
"Mecca was never the capital of any of the Islamic states. Muslim rulers did contribute to its upkeep, such as during the reigns of 'Umar (r. 634–644 CE) and 'Uthman ibn Affan (r. 644–656 CE) when concerns of flooding caused the caliphs to bring in Christian engineers to build barrages in the low-lying quarters and construct dykes and embankments to protect the area around the Kaaba." - "Makka – The pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods", Encyclopaedia of Islam
Mecca already had dykes, canals and tunnels ordered by Umar himself.
Later the canal of Zubaidah was also built to save Mecca from flooding:
https://www.islamiclandmarks.com/makkah-hajj-places/the-canal-of-zubaidah
In the year 809 CE (193 AH), Zubaidah (the wealthy wife of the 5th Abbasid Caliph) went on her fifth Hajj. That year there had been a drought in Makkah and she witnessed the devastating effect on the local population and the pilgrims.
Saddened by the situation she immediately called for a solution. Engineers and experts from different regions were employed to resolve the crisis. They proposed the building of a canal from the spring of Hunain which was 95km to the east. However, it wasn’t possible to build a canal on the surface because of the rocky and barren land. Instead, engineers chose to build an aqueduct which channeled water through a tunnel and provided it at different intervals where required.

Really UNFORTUNATE that Islamists have DECEIVED millions of innocent people using this prophecy:

Islamists often resort to dishonesty, and they have a vast propaganda machine to spread their lies and deceptions.
The combination of these two evils has allowed Islamists to mislead and convert innocent people to Islam through this prophecy.
Millions of Muslims harbor doubts about Islam, but Islamists have effectively used this prophecy to reinforce their faith.
The only fortunate aspect is that lies and propaganda can't last forever. Eventually, a time comes when the truth exposes falsehoods.

2024.04.30 19:18 Jealous_Pirate4178 why does right wing undermine south indias growth by always citing coast and freight equalization?

developed states = have coasts, but having coasts /= development. there are nearly 40 countries with coasts, that have been classified as lower income coutnries by world bank.
bangalore, hyderabad contributes some of the highest incomes yet theyre landlocked. plus south indias major revenue generator is the services sector, mainly IT exports which requires internet ports, not seaports.
if anything gujrat benefited the most from the coast and freight equalization, as there isnt much high skilled white collar talent moving there, but mostly low skilled workers. so gujrat wouldnt amount to much without freight equalization and modi preference.
moreover whats with comparing skill and talent of service jobs that are learnt and performed from hardwork, and comapring it to literal minerals that you just got lucky for by a geological luck which you didnt work hard for? states like karnataka are already rich and has the highest deposits in essential minerals like iron, gold, manganese, coal, bauxite.
Freight equalization policy ended in 1993 just when Bangalore was picking up pace and Hyderabad in 1991.
Speaking of Karnataka:
Coal - Karnataka uses 80 lakh tons or 8 million tonnes of coal per year. The average price of coal per tonne in the Indian market is 10000 and the international market is 15000. For the sake of comparision, the amount for the coal procured by Karnataka = 80 crores approx. The amount for the coal procured outside = 120 crores approx. Thats the difference of 40 crores.
Iron-ore (essential in the production of steel) - For the sake of comparision. Karnataka imports 4 lakh tonnes or 40 million tonnes of iron ores from East India or Odisha which is a major producer of iron ore. Amount for the iron-ore procured by Karnataka in India (per tonne) - 5000. Amount for the iron-ore procured by Karnataka outside India (per tonne) - 10000. Thats the difference of 20 crores.
Manganese-ore (component used to produce steel) - For the sake of comparision, the amount for the iron-ore procured by Karnataka in India (per tonne) - 10000 minimum. Amount for the manganese-ore procured by Karnataka in the international market (per tonne) - 10000
Bauxite - For the sake of comparision, the amount for the Bauxite procured by Karnataka in India (per tonne) - 15000 - 32000. The amount for the Bauxite procured by Karnataka in the international market (per tonne) - 15000–45000.
the values have been approximated to some degree for easier reading, but overall the idea is the same.
India uses 12 million tonnes of bauxite every year or 1.2 cr metric tonnes of bauxite. The total price in the international market would be 54 crores and and in the Indian market it would come around 38 crores. If we divide that by states in terms of population then Karnataka has approx 6% of Indias total population so that would be 22.8L rupees (comparing the highest price points)
These are the major minerals found in India along with some other minerals and it is not expontially lesser than in the international market. East India is getting its fair share of money from south India (considering that the other states more or less consume the same amount and that they have to pay the same amount to get those minerals)
The states that benefited the MOST are GUJRAT and MAHARASHTRA.
you can clearly see south isnt lacking majory in terms of minerals. but notice maharashtra and gujrat.
Odisha, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh have good amount of natural resources in the country. So what should have been the ideal location of the industries based on these resources? Obviously the locations where these resources are available .Mind you these locations are closer to sea with availability of sea ports like Paradeep ,Haldia and Kolkata.
However GOI India formulated a policy that any company can set up industry anywhere in the country and the cost of logistics will be subsidised by the central government. What it did was the industries set up plants where ever they got access to better skilled workers, safer places with low crime rates, better infrastructure and good literacy rates.
**firstly you need to understand what the freight equalisation policy means. it was a policy to subsidise the logistics of miners from mining states to industrial states. The minerals itself was sold at the same rate, so the mining states did not exactly loose any revenue.
some people argue that this policy disincentivised private companies from setting up plants in the mining states of Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh etc and the industries moved to coastal areas which are in South or West.
but that argument has no merits since Odisha and West Bengal too are coastal states with Kolkata being the most important port after Chennai in the Bay of Bengal. But not many Industries set up there. Kolkata had a lot of industries but was destroyed by communist rule. The Maoist Naxalite violence too scared away any industry from the region. Tata Steel did set up shop in Jharkhand. The eastern states lost opportunity to develop industries because of their own lawlessness and an absolute lack of talent and governance.
Also the policy of Freight equalisation existed before 1993. There were not much private enterprises set up in the South yet. Most were government or PSU set ups. South India was well developed, educated and industrialised well before Indian independence and continued to grow organically.
cheap labour from north is a new phenomenon caused by modern day socialist policies and otherwise labour was pretty much available locally.
Gist of the write up is irrespective of Freight equalisation policy or cheaper labour from north, South India would be exactly where it is.**
Indeed, such policies and resources did contribute but only to play part in the wholesome vision of people living in southern side.
**In the bigger quest for social and economic development, it was the vision of leaders, ethics and culture of society coupled with right attitude of government and it’s policies that manifested into overall growth of southern part.**
In 1905, the city of Bengaluru was electrified and even had electric streetlights decades before the northern towns did. More than half of homes in UP and Bihar are without electricity [as of May 2018], while Kerala has 100% electricity to every home.
You can take any metric - be it crime rates, women participation, literacy, school drop out rates, the southern states have been beating the northern ones for a long time. you dont get the mentioned metrics but just transferring the minerals from north.
The difference between the development of southern and northern states are so huge that it cannot be attributed to a single policy.
Madras Presidencies was one of the better run British provinces while the Princely states of Travancore and Mysore were way ahead of any of the northern kingdoms. Mysore had some of the world's highest real wages and living standards in the late 18th century, higher than Britain'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_Kingdom_of_Mysore all thanks to better governance and able leadership.
UP/BihaBengal had fallen behind in economy long before the Indian government established the freight equalization policy in the 1950s. The population growth of the northern states have been substantially higher than the southern states. The governance and bureaucracy of the northern states have been substantially poorer than the southern states.
There was a time when South Indians were short-changed for jobs in the Central Government as most of them did not know Hindi. I am talking about the middle and lower level jobs. This was the case in the sixties and seventies. South Indians were ridiculed for everything … from their accent while speaking Hindi ( Madrasi or Maddu or Mallu were common epithets used) to their dusky looks (epithets like kallu was the way to talk about them) to their woman wearing flowers on their hair, which made them prostitutes.
While the South was forced to follow a three-language formula in schools and Central Government work places, North Indians would follow a one-language formula … only Hindi. North Indian leaders like Mulayam Singh discouraged teaching of English in Government schools though they had no shame in getting their children admitted in top English medium schools. The result is that Akhilesh Yadav cornered all the privileges while our milkman, Golu Yadav's son remained illiterate.
This being the case, South Indians did something very innovative. They focussed on English education. They were not averse to mobility and went to all corners of the world, where ever there was an opportunities. Their English skills and focus on studying technical subjects found many of them going to the USA and Europe. They latched on to the emerging IT wave and quietly helped American companies set up back-offices in India. Bangalore was the city where the IT revolution started. In the nineties, it spread to Hyderabad courtesy the visionary Chandra Babu Naidu. The Central Governrment did not understand this business nor did any of the North Indian politicians. The consequence of this was that this industry grew leaps and bounds without interference from the Central Government and the cow belt politicians. Thousands of youngsters started making a beeline to the US from the Southern states. The South Indian state Governments also provided better and more progressive administration including spread of technical education while the social engineering brigades of the North led their states to anarchy and regression. I must also mention the effort of Malayalis, who were the first to set an example in getting educated and leaving to the Gulf in search of employment. The result was that the Southern states left the cow belt far behind.
So, no. You are absolutely off the mark in equating this policy of freight equalization with the better development of south Ibdian states. At best, this socialist policy wrecked the railway finances. Other than that it had no impact. Also the cheap labour from the cow belt and the East did not come to the South untill the beginning of this century. It was only the determination and single-minded focus on education, mobility and population control that made the Southen states years ahead of the North. The North and East Indian politicians wrecked havoc in the name of social engineering with the Lallus, Mullas, Behenjis, Commies and Didis taking the states to disaster.
Another retarded reason that RW nutjobs use are, and i quote " we protected south from invasions ".
The strength of the Kingdom also includes the wealth that average people possess and the land mass they consistently maintained.
After the fall of Mauryan and Gupta empire, no kingdom in the northern parts of India has ever maintained their borders effectively. They either expand rapidly or shrink gradually. It's because, as some people have earlier mentioned, due to major invasions from external invaders and also inside the borders. In North India, there were plenty of small kingdoms that arose when the Mauryan and Gupta empire disintegrated. This led to continuous war between kingdoms and unfortunately only a few kings that too for a short time emerged successfully. **North indian kingdoms had to literally sell their daughters to form alliances to protect themselves, how the FUCK would they protect south?**
On the other hand in South India, right from the 3rd Sangam age ( i.e. from 3 century B.C to 3-century C.E) or even before to medieval times the land mass was majorly ruled only by three kingdoms namely Chera, Chola, and Pandyans. In medieval time, three more kingdoms became prominent dynasties in the land namely Pallavas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar empire. The period for the latter two dynasties (Hoysalas and Vijayanagar)were after 1100 C.E., and hence less importance was given to them.
According to wikipedia there are 12 kings who have never lost the battles in their life(I’m talking about ancient India..and major wars which involved hundreds of thousands of soldiers). The list as per wikipedia contains:
  1. Ajatashatru
  2. Chandragupta Maurya
  3. Karikala Chola
  4. Cheran Senguttuvan
  5. great Nayanmar saint Kochengannan of Chola dynasty
  6. Chola king Rajasuyam Vaetta Perunarkilli (575 BC), who successfully completed military Rajasuyam sacrifice
  7. Pandyan Nedunchezhian of the Sangam age
  8. Samudragupta
  9. great Pallava Nayanmar saint Rajasimha
  10. Rajaraja Chola I
  11. his great warrior son Rajendra Chola.
  12. Narasimhavarman I
As you see, out of 12 kings, 8 belongs to South India.
What i’m trying to say is there are great kings in south too. They even excelled when comparing to their counterpart in some cases. I’m not arguing that Tamil Kings are the best, but they also had some mightiest kings of India, I just want you people to recognise it.
Unlike the North India which was ruled by warring factions who were in wars with each other, the Deccan and South India were ruled by at most three dynasties at a time. And it will be literally hard for the invaders who were new to the territories to challenge a well-established empire. Babur literally called krishnadevaraya as the most powerful king at that time, wouldnt be dumb enough to attack vijayanagara empire.
south may not have been attack by muslim inavders but it did get invaded by europeans, who are more detrimental as the suck the economy of wherever they colonise and are more dangerous than muslim invaders. South not only defeated the Dutch, French and Portugese, but restricted them to pondicherry, goa and kicked most of them out.
**Also lets not forget one of the most amazing yet sad moment from indian history. While north was struggling with one mughal empire, vijayanagar empire went to war against 4-5 sultanates at the same time with a massive number disadvantage and nearly beat all of them until, one of their own members betrayed them.**
Vijayanagara empire was the last powerful kingdom from karnataka and also of south india. Vijayanagara empire defeated islamic deccan armies for 3 centuries and delayed islamic expansion to south. Smaller Tamil and telugu kingdoms became the vassal states of vijayanagara empire. if not for them, souths demographics would be waaay different.
During their period Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola ruled nearly 40% of the current Indian territory and also the only Indian King who had territories outside of Indian mainland. No native rulers of India after the Maurya and Gupta achieved that feat.
One interesting fact about Rajendra Chola’s expedition to northern kingdoms is that while expanding territories up to Pala Kingdoms, Mahmud of Gazhni was raiding the northwestern parts of India. Had they both met on the battlefield then the entire history of India would’ve changed.
In addition to that so historians claim that the great king Bindusara of Mauryan never really tried to conquer the Tamil Kingdoms which were then mostly ruled by Ilamcetcenni of Cholas who was equally famous for maintaining a large battalion of Chariot forces, one that can overpower Bindusara’s.
And coming to the wealth of the South Indian kingdoms
  1. Right from the earlier Sangam age, the Tamil Kingdoms were trading with Romans and even with Japanese.
  2. Ports like Mussiri, Kaveripoompatinam, Korkai, Mausilipatanam were more famous in Rome than in many North Indian kingdoms.
  3. A Prince from South India, who is expected to be Pallava, became a Buddhist monk, spread Buddhism in China and also established the famous Shaolin Temple.
  4. Tamil literature is one of the longest surviving language in the world and main official language of all South Indian Kingdoms. (Though Sanskrit was used during initial days of Pallavas, the later rulers patronized Tamil more than Sanskrit.
But it has to be told none these north Indian dynasty kings could ever be able cross to really cross Vindhyas or banks of Narmada because of presence formidable dynasty kings in South. Among the above only two (Vikramarka & Gupta Empire) could have a chance and still they couldn't do it because of formidable southern dynasty kings. Remember there were no Muslim kings who could stop them or trouble them.
Raja Vikramarka of Ujjain could ever cross Narmada because of the presence of strong Andhra Satavahana kings of Asmaka-Mahajanapada in Pratishtanapura or Paithan.
Even the Gupta Empire kings couldn't expand their kingdom beyond Vindhyas because of the presence formidable Vakataka dynasty (of Vatsagulma or Washim of present MH). Vakataka's were direct descendants of Andhra Satavahana's in Central India.
Apart from above, the only king who actually tried to expand his Kingdom southward was Harshavardhana of Thanesar (of Sthanesvar of Haryana). And Harshavardhana met with a huge defeat at the hands of Chalukya King Pulakeshi II (of Vatapi or Badami of present KA). This gave an excellent opportunity for Chalukya kings to cross Narmada-Vindhyas to establish a huge Chalukya Confederacy of kingdom in Malwa and Gujarat regions.
However, an interesting aspect to be told about two Kalinga based dynasties (Mahameghvahana and Gajapathi dynasty kings) Kharavela (2nd century BCE - a contemporary of Satakarni I) and Kapilendra Deva-Pushottam Deva-Pratap Rudra Deva - 15–16 century AD) - these kings made conquests down south along the east coast to conquest up to Vengi and beyond up to Udayagiri forts for brief periods.
Finally, all I was saying is that South Indian Kingdoms were DEFINITELY not lesser when compared to North Indian Kingdoms. Their culture and language far reached more than the North Indian kingdoms. People in India never really cared about the History of South India and all they wanted was to learn about Mauryas, Guptas, Rajputs and praise their courage.
There is so much more points I could write but i rest my views here. it been a long post.

2024.04.30 00:29 WalkingBoots23 Take $4 pay cut or stay put?

I work in healthcare, at bedside, and I strongly dislike where I work because of the workload. We are understaffed more often than not and management is a bit of a mess.
I applied for a job at a different hospital just to see what's out there. The area is beautiful, there's multiple avenues of advancement, the workload is the 'norm' for my profession, they offer 80% tuition reimbursement and are partnered with a school I would like to complete a 2nd master's program with. My only hesitation is that the pay is $4 less. I currently make 43.50 w/diffs and was offered 39.50 w/diffs. The hospital is about the same distance from my house (1hr commute) as my current hospital. They also offer a 10k sign on bonus with a 1yr commitment paid out in 30 days, lump sum. The recruiter did say they do raises if I start before August (think it's 1%) and cost of living analysis increases. They also give a base pay bump and reimbursement for additional certifications.
Edit: I currently have a master's degree in my profession, but they don't have a metric system to account for that yet and are basing the offer off years of experience (1yr for me). My current job pays me based on my master's degree with no experience at the time I started.
I threw the numbers into my budget worksheet and it's looking like a $400 decrease/month in my disposable income.
Thinking of my career only, this is a great place to advance in the long-term. But idk how to feel about taking a gamble on pay increases to get me closer to my current salary. The recruiter said she may be able to squeeze an extra $1 or $2/hr, and that would make me more comfortable, but no guarantees.
I don't have a lot of bills where a $7500 salary decrease would hurt me too much, but I am scared given the economy. But I'm also scared of staying at a place that I hate for the sake of money.
Advice? I have until Monday (next week) to decide.
Current Hospital: 43.5/hr, heavy workloads, messy management, friends
Perspective Hospital: 39.5/hr, 10k sign on bonus for 1yr, advancement opportunities, normal workloads

2024.04.29 02:14 gamecompass_ Registeel: PvP deepdive.

Registeel: PvP deepdive.
TL;DR: Registeel has always been a staple in the PvP meta, something that will (most likely) always be true. There are 3 main things that keep it in check at the moment:
  • The rise of Gligar
  • The matchup against Lickitung is highly dependent on IVs
  • The fact that Registeel is a premium pokemon.
Note: I'm basing most of this analysis on the results of the app I'm developing: gamecompass.gg. Keep in mind that I literally released the first draft of the app today, so I apologize if it looks a bit simple and lacks some functionality. I'll keep updating it.
If I need something for the analysis that I haven't implemented in my app (yet!) I'll use some other source for the info and provide proper citations. Mainly gamepress.gg and pvpoke.com
Kinda late to the party with this one. I want to post this earlier in the week but I got stuck at work, and I found a bug in the app, so I had to re-run the simulations.

First things first: is it actually good?

To keep things simple: yes, Registeel is good; in fact, it is very good. For the current season it has Rank #26 for the Great league and Rank #14 for the Ultra league. It can't realistically participate on the Master league.
Note: Last week I posted something similat to TheSilphRoad. I found a typo in the table that my app uses for the simulations. I fixed the typo an re-ran the simulations; that's why there's a slight difference in the rankings in both posts.
Great League rank in gamecompass.gg
https://preview.redd.it/1tx8w7lrcaxc1.png?width=572&format=png&auto=webp&s=3220ba0a045ec888ce1c8c383431c6109972124f
Why? Two main reasons: bulk and resistances. Registeel is one of the bulkiest pokemons in the meta. And its Steel typing means that it has a whopping 11 resistances:
Registeel also has access to Lock On, the fast attack with the highest energy generation in the game. Which it absolutely needs, as its charge attacks are quite expensive. I don't have a fancy chart to show here, I plan to add a "Speed" chart to the app in the future.

IV analysis

I think this will probably be the most polarizing part of the post. So, let's tackle it step by step.
Stat product comparison by catching method.
This is the most common way to compare IVs, used by apps like stadium.gg and Poke Genie. It is a simple multiplication of the stats of the pokemon (attack * defense * stamina). Because of the mathematical formula used to calculate the CP of a pokemon, this means lowering the attack IV as much as possible, while increasing the defense and stamina IVs.
We also have to keep in mind that different ways to obtain pokemons will provide a different minimum floor for the IVs:
  • Raids: 10 IV minimum
  • Best friends trade: 5 IV minimum (800 stardust cost)
  • Good friends trade: 1 IV minimum (20,000 stardust cost)
This means that the best IV combination can only be obtained when traiding with a new friend, which can quickly become expensive for both players.
But, what is the actual difference in the stat product? I added a table that shows this to my app:
Percentual difference between different IV combinations on the Great League
Percentual difference between different IV combinations on the Ultra League
For the pictures above, I set the IV combination to the Rank 1 good friend combination of each league. As you can see, there is only around a 3% difference in the stat product if you use a Rank 1 IV combination directly from a raid instead of trying to maximize the stat product by trading with a friend.
What can we conclude from this? Basically almost nothing. Comparing the stat product is meant as an easy and quick way to rank IV combinations, but it tells us little of the actual performance of the different IVs. That's why I added some other tables.
Comparing IVs for Charge Move Priority (CMP) events.
A CMP event occurs when both players throw their charge attack at the same time. Good players can force a CMP event, which in turn forces the opponent to either take the damage (and threaten a KO) or use a shield. Winning a CMP event can be the difference between victory and defeat.
We can increase the likelihood of winning a CMP event by increasing the IV attack of our pokemon. Here are the pokemons Registeel can compete with for a CMP event in the Great League:
Comparing the attack stat difference between Registeel 2/13/14 in the Great League
Comparing the attack stat difference between Registeel 11/15/15 in the Great League
Of course, Jumpluff and Probopass aren't really important in this case, as Registeel can easily defeat them. Diggersby on the other hand can actually be a risk to Registeel, as it has access to Fire Punch and Scorching Sands, both moves deal super-effective damage to Registeel. But as Diggersby isn't that common on the open Great League, it really isn't worth it to try to increase Registeel's attack only for this matchup.
For the Ultra League, the list is event less important. With a maximum CP of 2417, Mandibuzz isn't that common on the open Ultra League, so we really shouldn't worry about this.
Important note: The comparisons are made against the Rank 1 IV combination of the opponent's pokemon. If the opponent uses an IV combination different that the rank 1, the CMP event might not be flipped. I plan to extend the functionality of this section in the future.
Comparing IVs by the damage done by Lock on
Increasing the attack IV of our pokemon can increase the attack done by our fast attacks and charge attacks. But in the case of Registeel, this isn't really possible.
Lock on is the move with the highest energy generation in the game, but to balance this, it has some of the lowest damage. In fact, the only reason it deals damage at all in some cases is because the damage formula has a minimum output of 1.
So it doesn't make any sense to try to maximize the damage done by Lock on.
Comparing IVs by the damage taken from fast attacks
This is the most problematic part of the analysis, mainly because of the implications.
First is important to understand the metric the table shows: HP%/s. This is the percentage of your total HP (or stamina) the opponent pokemon will do each second. This means that if an opponent does 1 HP%/s to your pokemon with their fast attack, it will take exactly 100 second for your pokemon to faint from fast attacks only.
I'm using HP% to differentiate some nuances. Let's imagine Pokemon A with 100 HP, and Pokemon B with 70 HP. And imagine we have a fast attack that does 5 points of damage every second to both pokemons. If we simply show this as 5 damage per second, it would seem that both pokemons take the same damage. But if we show it as a percentage of their max HP, Pokemon A takes 5 HP%/s, while pokemon B takes 7.14 HP%/s. We can see that Pokemon B will faint faster.
I'm normalizing the damage to 1 second to make it easier to compare fast moves with different duration. E.g. Lick with 1 turn vs Incinerate with 5 turns.
The table makes a comparison between the damage received by the rank 1 IV of Registeel vs whichever IV combination you enter in the app. In this case I set it up to the Rank 1 IV combination that can be obtained directly from raids: 11/15/15
Comparing damage received by a Registeel 11/15/15 in the Great League
Again, the middle column shows the HP%/s received by Registeel with 2/13/14, and the final column shows the HP%/s received by the IVs I set in the app, in this case 11/15/15.
Forretress (Shadow) isn't that common in the open Great League, but Lickitung is. This match is rather important, as Lickitung is one of the most common safe switches in the game.
This doesn't really happen in the Ultra League, so at least we don't have to worry about it.
Important note: The comparisons are made using opponents with Rank 1 IVs, so a Lickitung with 8/14/15. Actual performance will vary depending on the IVs used by the enemy. I have some preeliminary plans to improve the app to handle different IVs for the enemies.

Deeper dive: Registeel vs Lickitung.

This is a new section that I added to the post, that isn't included in the previous one. I made all the charts manually; but I'm working to add this charts to the app, so you can check IV combinations of any pokemon.
To fully understand what happens in this matchup, we first need to understand how the game calculates damage. It does it with this formula:
Damage formula, taken from gamepress.gg
Where:
  • Power is the base damage done by the attack. In this case, Lick has 3 base damage.
  • Attack is the attack stat of the attacker, in this case Lickitung
  • Defense is the defense stat of the defender, in this case Registeel
  • Multipliers include STAB and supereffectivenes, but in this case it only includes
Of course, the attack and defense of the pokemons depend completely on their IV's, and there are houndreds of possible IV combinations. As most players try to maximize the stat product, let's use that metric for our calculations. If we take a look to the top 250 IV combinations for Lickitung by stat product, we can find two IV combinations we can focus on:
  • 8/14/15: This is the IV combination with the highest stat product. Most players will attempt to have similar IVs. It has an attack of 97.47
  • 14/13/13: This is the IV combination with the highest attack, that still is within the top 250 IV combinations by stat product. It has an attack of 100.38. It is unlikely that players will go for this IV combination, but we can use it for our calculations.
Now that we have all the necessary information, we can substitute the data in the formula. Let's do it first for the Lickitung with the highest stat product, X is Registeel's defense:
Damage formula for 8/14/15 Lickitung
With some basic maths, we can simplify this expression:
https://preview.redd.it/0jvcy486oaxc1.png?width=133&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a1108f7ade0dfd1e25b3db7aabfef868d6d3be0
This means that Registeel needs at least 190.068 defense to reach the necessary bulkpoint to reduce Lick's damage from 2 to 1.
Now, let's look at the same formula, but this time using an attack weighted Lickitun (14/13/13):
Damage formula for 14/13/13 Lickitung
Which simplified is:
https://preview.redd.it/mzzt6a0j2bxc1.png?width=155&format=png&auto=webp&s=964e89010620fede3614fee3ec6297dce335c083
This means that Registeel needs at least 195.742 defense to reach the bulkpoint.
With these values stablished, we can now look at how Registeel's defense varies depending on different catching methos:
Registeel from raids
A registeel obtained directly from raids has a minimum IV floor of 10. In the chart, the horizontal line is the IV rank by stat product, the vertical line is the Defense stat of that IV combination. The Red line is the necessary defense to reach the bulkpoint vs Lickitun (8/14/15); the Yellow line is the necessary defense to reach the bulkpoint against an attack weighted Lickitun (14/13/13).
You can interpert this as the rulers that are sometimes used for roller coasters: "You need to be this tall to ride". In this case is "You need to have this much defense to reach the bulkpoint".
Defense stat of the top 25 IV combination from raids for Registeel.
As you can clearly see, there isn't a single IV combination that reaches the necessary bulkpoint.
Registeel from Best Friends trade
When traiding with a best friend, the minimum IV floor is 5, which allows you to reach a higher stat product:
https://preview.redd.it/bcryswbe4bxc1.png?width=991&format=png&auto=webp&s=eee5063a8cffd539d4ab8b029b45f92d41ac833d
In this case, there are several IV combinations that reach the necessary defense stat to fight against a Rank 1 Lickitung, but there is still a big gap against an attack weighted Lickitung
Registeel from good friends.
When traiding with a new friend, the minimum IV floor is 1. This is the only way to obtain IV combinations with the highest stat product.
https://preview.redd.it/b8alfbg55bxc1.png?width=991&format=png&auto=webp&s=9741c95fd32920e8bd9d6aed5c12b567c447c8e8
Most of the IV combination reach the necessary bulkpoint to reduce Lick's damage. But only from Lickitungs with low attack.
But this graph shows something worrisome. Look at the rank 12 Registeel (1/3/15). While its stat product is relatively high, is defense is actually low. If we check the performance using PvPoke's simulator, we can see that some shielding scenarios are flipped:
Source: PvPoke simulator
This specific match shows one of the problems of simply using Stat product to compare IV combinations. It gives the same weight to all 3 stats. This is always the ideal case, as some pokemons want more defense (like Registeel). While some pokemons actually want more attack (Like Shadow Dragonite). Still, stat product comparizon continues to be the easiest way to check IV combinations.
I want to add several tools to the app that will allow you to do analysis like this one, but I'm still working on it.
Summary
  • This means that a Registeel obtained directly from raids cannot reach the necessary defensive breakpoint to reduce the damage taken form Lickitung's Lick.
  • This means that while a Registeel with 2/13/14 can easily defeat Lickitung, a Registeel with 11/15/15 will actually loose. I haven't uploaded my battling algorithm to my app, so these are simulations on pvpoke.
  • This means that if you use a Registeel obtained from raids, you can't safe switch into a Lickitung.

Are there any drawbacks?

Yes, while Registeel is a powerful pokemon in PvP, it has some problems: its lack of fast attack pressure and its current place in the meta.
Lack of fast attack pressure
Lock on provides some of the best energy generation in the game, but it does basically no damage. This means that Registeel depends completely on its charge attacks and will struggle to finish of opponents with low HP.
This even happen in last year's World's Grand Finals, in a battle between itsAXN and xXRubixMasterXx. xXRubixMasterXx ended up with a full health Registeel, but itsAXN had 3 pokemons with low HP. Registeel couldn't knock out any one of them.
Current place in the meta
Let's look at the top 12 pokemons by usage in the last 3 official tournaments:
https://preview.redd.it/ndjd3odleavc1.png?width=1931&format=png&auto=webp&s=3428200fcf2bb4dd93901c7825915e4a809a0525
https://preview.redd.it/1ebqbdvleavc1.png?width=1925&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9b2e40f6f404067d176d97a23c731e322678529
https://preview.redd.it/9ogvi1fmeavc1.png?width=1915&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e04fc840311c27053081775ab7d5c3394237b5f
I plan to add a section for this on the app, in the mean time you can see the tournaments in the official youtube channel.
Just like Medicham a while ago, Gligar has become the most popular pokemon. Its typing means that it will resist Registeel's charge attacks, and in return it has access to Dig to deal super effective damage. The rise of Gligar means that players are using Skarmory instead of Registeel. Skarmory will be able to do some neutral damage, while resisting all attacks from Gligar.
Of course, this could change in the next season, when a new patch might (emphasis on might) lower Gligar's usage.

Conclusions

  • Registeel is a powerful pokemon that will certainly improve your PvP teams, both for the Great League and the Ultra League.
  • It is a premium pokemon, so please be aware of how much you spend while trying to obtain it and/or improve its IVs.
  • The main reason to use a Registeel obtained by trading vs using one obtained from Raids is to improve the Lickitung matchup.
  • The popularity of Gligar means that it might be safer to use Skarmory as your steel pokemon, but it is still very valid to use Registeel in your team.
  • There isn't any major problem when using a raid Registeel in the Ultra League, so you shouldn't obsess over it.
  • Remember, first focus on obtaining a good enough Registeel, and then you can try to perfect it. This is specially true if your resources are limited. Once again be careful of how much money you spend.
Last note: Like I said, I just released the first version of my app gamecompass.gg. It is a passion project I'm developing on my free time. Let me know if you find any errobugs or if you have any suggestions to improve it. I can't promise a specific schedule, but I'll do my best.
My first priority for the moment is to add similar charts to the ones I posted here, so you can check for bulkpoint/breakpoints in specific matches.

2024.04.28 06:44 gregoryaldridge Returning Comparable Sites to Front Page Summary Sheet

I have a database of Car Wash Sites (circa 1,500 individual sites). For each site I have detailed demographic data for them (e.g Population within 5km, median income, etc etc).
I am creating a worksheet that will act as a summary. You will select a site from the drop down and an easy to read summary will populate.
I am looking for this summary page to bring up 5-10 comparable sites. I want to define 5 or so metrics to search the catchment database and return comparable sites (e.g sites that have a similar sized population, with a similar median income, and a few more).
I am not sure how to do this automatically.
Manually I'd apply filters for the key metrics, and drill down to comparable sites that way. I have no VBA skills, but am a willing learner.
How would you go about solving such a problem?
Thanks in advance to this amazing community

2024.04.27 21:58 Afoolfortheeons This is the shit I think about

So I'm schizoaffective and autistic. I'm also [Redacted], but, y'know, my handler doesn't let me share that publicly. As a result, I got an interesting brain. Makes me think differently than the average meatbag of mostly water with basic reasoning skills. When I was a kid, my parents and I played a lotta board games, and me being me always found ways to fuck with the rules to skate by on a win that no one expected. Like, you know Monopoly? You should never go for hotels, because you can cause a housing shortage by keeping all those green houses in play, and then you can dominate the board with some skillful negotiation.
These sorta boundary-pushing tactics were certainly enhanced and developed by playing a metric butt-ton of video games. I just, y'know, could see the effects of all my choices as they proliferated across a complex system with a multitude of rule-sets and ways to create inputs. And as a result, and when combined with my other, unspecified training, my mind is finely tuned with an ability to judge and determine the exact nature of the system we're in that is colloquially called civilization.
What do I mean by this? Well, let's look at the second amendment in America. Supposed to ensure protection against tyranny, right? Yea, no, the way technology and mind control has advanced over these last few centuries guarantees that a snowball has a better chance freezing Hell over than the American population has of overthrowing our government. But, y'know what that amendment does do? Guarentees there's a rifle behind every blade of grass, which, according to various foreign sources, and when combined with other factors like America's geography, make America fucking unassailable from external invasion.
This is the shit I think of. Let's take another example, perhaps one that's a little less hot in our cultural firestorm: the crusades. A buncha battles to secure the holy land from the likes of foreign heretics, right? Well, y'know, that little strip of land on the east coast of the Mediterranean is one of the most strategic locations for controlling trade between the west and east, but that is a fart in the wind to what was really going on.
Charles Darwin is typically credited with coming up with the idea of evolution. But, y'know, every fucking goat farmer six thousand years ago was well aware of animal husbandry. The concept of inherited traits was virtually a no brainer, and was used to great effect to domesticate evolve both plant and animal life to forms that better serve humanity. So, like, when do you think the first galaxy brain leader came up with idea of breeding better humans?
So, Jesus said love your neighbor and enemies, right? Even if religion is a completely engineered institution to program the population's behavior (and it is, and that's a good thing), it's probably a good idea to select the traits of peacefulness and ability to collectively love others. As a result of this epiphany, the leaders of the “dark ages” called for all those people who wanted to kill for God, and got them to kill each other. This had the benefit of causing an evolutionary shift in the genes of the masses, as the men who were the best fighters were artificially selected and got to breed with the surplus of women after each crusade, but, y'know, it also created a vacuum for the most kind and gentle men to get mad pussy while those dumbasses were off to commit genocide. As a result, both the Christians and Muslims intentionally created a force in the system that was their civilizations that pushed that masses to become more fit for the needs of what we can call the modern world.
Also, population control, because, y'know, we were an exponentially growing population on a finite amount of land that could only produce so much food. History was written by utilitarians.
But, hey, what's a little psychopathic manipulation when we're dealing with the literal apocalypse from the possibility of a foreign power growing stronger than your nation and just massacring all of your people? A lotta people tend to think of engineering society to make a utopia where everybody eats steak and gets to fuck. That would be a nice goal if God wasn't completely indifferent to the suffering and extinction of any and all lifeforms He ever created. That's where, y'know, the reality of “the elites are intentionally engineering society to be the most functional in terms of survivability in this competitive, dog-eat-dog world of ours” comes to shine.
I would absolutely love to live in a world where there's a four-day work week and there's a viable universal basic income and everybody gets ice cream for dinner, but when any system we can create for business and governance is inherently dominated and exploited by ruthless sociopaths, it's better that we allow our sociopathic leaders to facilitate a system that kicks every other systems’ asses to the curb.
Would I change anything about America? Oh you bet your burger I'd flip shit on its head if I ever became president, but as it stands, the American culture exists to keep everybody working as hard as they can, so our corporate overlords will have more power to make moves against foreign powers. You know why feudalism fucking worked? Because it allowed the wealth to be pooled in a small group per state, and that allowed those people to make big moves on the geopolitical stage. Ain't no “fair” system allowing anybody make, say, a purchase of foreign land for a sizable percent of your nation's GDP.
As such, a nation where wealth is fairly distributed would be crippled by the executive abilities of a nation of poor people that has a few extremely rich rulers. In the former, who's giving up their livable wage to pay for arming a military? In the latter, the rich create a livable wage that compelled the masses to go fuck up the other “fairer” nation. It's just basic strategy!
I dunno. I was just brainwashed by the CIA to create propaganda on Reddit. What the fuck do I know? I just see why anarcho-capitalism would thrive if it were allowed to manifest in a functional form. It's just a system that compels maximum utility and evolution.

2024.04.27 10:51 noflowerofherkindred Where can I order professional tailoring tools?

Hi! I'm apprenticing as a dressmaker for a rather helther skelter company and I'm missing a lot of the knowledge and tools that would help me along the way. No, I can't apprentice anywhere else, before anyone asks. :') I've managed to find a lot of nifty books and resources and made a lot of wonderful connections, so I dare say I have the former under reasonable control.
As for tools, I can't seem to find proper quality tools. I don't want anything plastic. I'll gladly spend a fair bit of money as long as it's for quality that lasts.
Here are some tools that I'm missing:
I work mainly with thick wools and some silks, linen and cotton.
Thanks for any help!!

The Hittites when they notice that Wilusa is embroiled in a decade-long war of heroes and gods caused by someone having an affair:
Wilusa was a Bronze Age city in Anatolia. One of its rulers was a man named Alaksandu, who signed a treaty with Great King Muwatalli II around 1280 BC. The treaty ensured that Wilusa would provide the Hittites with intelligence on their enemies and troops for their military campaigns. One of the Wilusan gods who was to guarantee this treaty was Apaliunas, the ‘Stormgod of the Army’.
Sometime later, however, a warlord named Piyamaradu began causing trouble for the Hittites near Wilusa. Piyamaradu also led an unsuccessful rebellion in Lukka, then fled to territory controlled by Ahhiyawa.
Many archaeologists and historians believe that Wilusa is Troy, based on geographical information and the similarity between the names ‘Wilusa’ and ‘Wilios’, which, based on metrical evidence from the Iliad and the Odyssey, may have been the original Greek name for Ilios (Troy).
There are other interesting similarities between names mentioned in Hittite texts and the mythology of the Trojan War:
  • Alaksandu = Alexander (another name for Paris)?
  • Apaliunas = Apollo?
  • Piyamaradu = Priam?
  • Lukka = Lycia? (this one seems extremely probable)
  • Ahhiyawa = Achaea?

2024.04.25 23:02 Doc_Boons my experience with today's matchmaking "adjustment"

I read the announcement about the "adjustment" today at work and was excited to get home and see what changes had been made. I had read some pessimistic comments saying it was the same or worse, but am myself inclined toward optimism in most things. I had high hopes for a decent session.
I picked out one of my Mighty Ruler characters, that being the range where--because of my higher ranked characters--I've seen the most bullshit since the first adjustment.
I practiced some combos while I waited...
...and waited...
...and waited...
...and after approximately five minutes, I finally got a match.
The other player denied the match.
I'm in America 1 and I logged in around 4:30 p.m. EST--a perfectly reasonable, busy time to play. The only reason it could have difficulty finding me a match at a very well-populated rank is that it must have been trying again to match me according to a more specific metric than rank.
I know most people simply want the prowess-based change rolled back, but I have seen some people defending it. It's worth repeating that rank is already an appropriate matchmaking algorithm. Yes, higher ranked players play alts in lower ranks, but either a) they belong at that rank because they're not fluent with the alt character, or b) they move out of the rank quickly and are no longer a problem. I have played through enough of the ranks with enough characters to have seen first hand that, in the old system, approximately five out of six matches were rank-appropriate. Anyone getting thrown off by a higher-ranked player was desperate for points anyway. They notice and complain about those occasional mismatched encounters the same way in which they complain about losing-streak penalties, yet never about win-streak bonuses. Rank, on its own, was a fine matchmaker. Sure, the alts could probably be auto-promoted nearer to the main--I'm cool with that--but even if they weren't, there simply aren't enough high rank players to throw off the mid-rank players, who exist in far greater numbers.

2024.04.22 15:47 HappyCoomer Another issue with Prowess-Based matchmaking

People skill level varies daily, sometimes we have a good day, sometimes a bad. In all competitive games, if you lose, you demote, play against worse players, cause you're worse at that moment.
In Tekken, you barely lose any Prowess on demotion. You can have a good day and lucky winstreaks, and go from mighty rulers to Fujin, which is not your "real rank". But your prowess suddenly goes from ~130k to ~170k. Then you play the next day, you obviously lose and go back to Mighty Ruler, when suddenly, you're still playing against people with ~170k prowess.
Peak rank is not your skill, and I can't recall a single game that uses this for a matchmaking. I don't think Prowess is a bad metric, but it needs to be changed a lot, like losing prowess on demotion (but rank already does that, so what's the point of prowess).

2024.04.22 04:28 Cptsparkie23 I like the idea behind the new matchmaking system, but Tekken Prowess might just not be it. It's good in theory, but the implementation is terrible.

Will have to preface this by saying I'm just a hard stuck Battle Ruler, who's probably just really average at the game, with a Tekken Prowess dancing around 150-160k. The ranked system before the change felt off a lot of the time cause it felt all over the place, and one of the biggest causes of that for me was the variation between opponents. One day I'm having a decent day going even against people who are in the same rank average, then the next I'm being consecutively steamrolled by Tenryus with mains in the high blues.
I feel like the idea behind mitigating variation in ranked matches so that people are actually playing people closer in skill level, and trying to place people where they really should be is a good intention behind the change, but Tekken Prowess just feels so arbitrary that it doesn't work. It's a number with no immediately discernible bearing hidden behind vague metrics.
I feel like just overhauling the auto-promotion system would help a lot more than having a rank discrepancy between a player's main and sub character to the point that it becomes harder to match up since they're not in the same group as the people who are truly in that rank. Auto-promos should bring people to either a color tier behind after getting to the second rank of their current tier, or the rank just before that tier. As an example, getting to Raijin should either promote all your characters to Tenryu or Mighty Ruler, and should stop at Tekken Emperor, where players auto-promote to either Battle Ruler or Fujin. This is only a perspective of someone hard stuck in purple, but after trying it out a few times, it feels like getting any character to purple shouldn't take time for me. Sure it's all anecdotal since we all approach the game differently, but learning the important aspects of a character for an hour or two, while utilizing things I've learned from playing my main definitely make it easier to get out of lower ranks. I started out with a Destroyer Dragunov and Lili, picked up a few of their key moves and within a few hours, got my Dragunov to Tenryu (wanted to push for ruler, but it got so boring cause I just wanted to see how far I can take not learning anything except for his few best moves), and Lili to Mighty Ruler. I didn't even know combos for Dragunov, and only knowing bnbs for Lili. My observation? Yellows are free, Orange ranks are easy and Reds aren't that hard to deal with. Even hit the point where I either just keep going on win streaks, or I drop a game every once in a while to take advantage of rank bonuses.
I've seen people talk about the same things since Tekken 7, but some players are very against it cause it becomes harder to pick up new characters, but here's the thing:
  1. Did you just cheese your way into higher ranks, and took advantage of broken moves and knowledge checks? Too bad, maybe actually learn Tekken. It's not that your characters should be in a lower rank, it's just that your main's is inflated.
  2. You feel like you have to start from the bottom learning a new character? Again, maybe actually try learning Tekken? Fundamentals cross over. While there are other technical aspects that you have to pick up with different characters, the general idea behind the game should remain the same, although playstyles could be significantly different. Thing is though, after facing so many high blue to Tekken King mains who are trying out other characters in purple ranks, I've been destroyed by so many of them with just a few moves, bnb combos, and just knowing how to deal with Bryan.
  3. You're "trying out" a new character...in ranked? That's purely your fault. While it's not a bad thing to try out new characters in any mode of your choosing, you subjecting yourself to "learning" a new character in ranked mode and getting frustrated cause you can't do anything is all on you. There's quick match, player match, the lounge, and practice mode to learn...stomping people in ranks significantly lower than yours is just you taking advantage of their lack of knowledge than you actually learning anything.

2024.04.20 14:24 Redallofit2 Is it necessary to buy a half scale ruler?

Hi,
For pattern making, is it necessary to buy a half scale ruler for pattern making? Or can I just double my regular rulers?
I'm tossing up whether to get one as I'm unable to find one physically in store and online purchases + delivery seems a bit much.

2024.04.16 12:39 Plastic_Finish1968 The Long Walk Home: chapter 3 (Ivan Fought a Bear Once.)

You might be surprised to learn that I didn't come here alone. Didn't I mention that before? I had a crew, or rather, I was ON a crew. You see, the asteroid/portal was spotted on a telescope a long time before I traveled to it. Its manufactured straight lines and surface drawings were a dead giveaway to intelligent construction. I didn't know if aliens existed or not, but if anything would prove it, it would be this thing. So we all hopped into a spaceship and flew out.
Yeah, It really wasn't as simple as that. It actually nearly caused a bunch of world wars. Everyone scrambled to be the first country to make it to the solid portal-thing, though no one knew it was a prtal at the time. There was a lot of political maneuvering between nations, and I had to make it onto a short list. Then, some people on that list would be put on another list. Then, a few other countries would do the same, and then we would all meet up, and hope we had compatible personalities. If not, oh well, too bad. You're stuck together. Ambassadors of our countries, cultures, and species. Yep, including 45-year-old, out-of-shape, me. I only made it on that short list because I quote "worked well with others."
I was a real team player, which means I can hold the flashlight at just the right angle so the real qualified personnel can get the job done. As far as I was concerned, every ship should come with a spitting cobra. Your job is to feed the cobra once a week, and the cobra's job is to inject you with deadly cytotoxin if you ever touch any of the expensive instruments. Yeah, your guess is as good as mine how i made it.
It wasn't all bad. The Russian representative was a really good storyteller. He Always managed to work in that time he wrestled a bear and lived into every conversation, so that was fun. Theu had to make an extra big space suit for him. His name was rook, but i called him Ivana. Oh, and the British guy had all those funny words he used instead of real English. James was the canadian. It was nice having someone this side of the lake to talk to. They were entertaining. The real thorn in my side were the Chinese astronauts. Yeah, "astronauts" Plural. They demanded they be allowed two, and all they did was give us dirty looks and talk to each other in Mandarin.
One time, one of them got comfortable and actually spoke to me.
"Good workout?" I asked.
He floated over to me and looked down. Always looking down this one, never any eye contact. "No, Why do you ask?"
"Well, I just figured because you're all sweaty. I could see that from across the hall."
Everyone had to spend a minimum of 1 hour per day to keep our bodies from succumbing to atrophy. Zero G did that to a man.
"Space is a terrible place to try to bulk up," I reminded him. I figured a joke couldn't hurt. They do have a sense of humor in China, right? I mean, You should see how we slept. Strapped to the wall like we had the "I love me" jackets on. The one that made you hug yourself in a padded room when you went a little crazy. That's funny. It's funny and vary claustrophobic, but you get used to it.
He gave me a soft laugh in response.
"There it is!" I applauded. "I knew you guys knew how to laugh."
I noticed his hand shaking a little as he reached up to pull himself a little closer.
"Must have been a better workout than you thought." I observed.
"No, I was just at the message console."
"Oh neat. Anything from America I should know about?"
"No. No messages from America. Only China."
"Bummer. Your country must like you more than mine likes me."
He didn't respond, then I made another astute observation. "You don't talk much, do you?"
"Your country and mine do not get along."
"Well, that's true, but that doesn't mean we can't."
He actually looked up at me and made eye contact. That was a first.
"I mean, they REALLY don't get along."
"Jyong, what's wrong?"
He forced a smile, then his counterpart appeared. The smile quickly faded. Me-yan scolded him in their own language. I obviously didn't understand, but that brought our conversation to a swift end. Me-yan gave me the typical glare before leaving with his partner.
Yeah, That was weird.
The Brit and I waited a long time for our messages from Earth, but it never came. The Russian got his, and so did the Canadian. The strange thing was, they all seemed to distance themselves from us afterward. We were a week away from the portal, and more than half the crew suddenly felt like they wanted nothing more than to be rid of us. It was awkward.
It felt like going on a road trip when mommy and daddy were fighting, and if you speak up, you know your input would be slapped down and you would be scolded for budding in. A day or three after that, a strange thing happened. The Canadian, James, approached me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I just wanted to let you know that if you or Eddy need anything, you just let me know."
"Those are strange first words to say to someone after 3 days of the silent treatment."
James swallowed hard.
"Why dont you tell me what's going on with you guys?"
Before he could answer, Rook spoke into the intercom. I got pretty good at understanding his thick Russian accent by now. "Guys, come look. We can finally see the artifact from here."
This was enough of a distraction to pause our conversation, but it felt manufactured. It was all so perfectly timed. We floated up to the flight deck, and there it was, he wasn't lying. A little speck in the distance, illuminated against the backdrop of infinity.
A few days later, and we were there. We all sent a signal to our respective countries, talking about our progress, telling our families we love them, and asking for updates on the state of things. When we recieved messages from earth, we checked, but yet again, the inbox for me and Eddy were still empty.
"What are we, talking to a wall?" I asked.
Eddy shook his head in disapproval. "I know she didn't approve of me going to space, but I thought my mom would at least wish me a happy birthday."
"Oh, it's your birthday? I would've got you something but-" I gestured to our surroundings.
"Nah, I've grown out of that stage, haven't I. It's been a while though, and no word for us. And for some reason, our Canadian friend only speaks French when he's sending messages. I should have learned French."
"Yeah, I wish I did better in Spanish class back in high school."
He smiled up at me. "I'm glad you're here. You bring some lightheartedness to an otherwise lonely time."
"Eh, but you're not alone." I pointed to the Russian. "You got Ivan the cosmonaut who was sent here only because he fought a bear that one time." I pointed over to the Canadian "The maple syrup salesman, here to find a new clientele to sell to." I pointed to the two Chinese men. "And finally, your dynamic duo. One is here to remind us that China is better than our countries, and that one is here to take over when the other one needs a bathroom break or a nap."
"Don't forget yourself."
"Right. Moral support. That's basically all I can do around here. My wrists get slapped with a ruler every time I try to help out."
Rook looked over at me, obviously overhearing what I said and added. "You'll get your chance to help out. We're on our approach. I need you."
My job was to watch the screen and read off numbers. "40 degrees port, 5 inches up, only, I had to use the metric system. down a metric pubic hair, clockwise tilt, back up and try again." That kind of stuff.
We were trying to fly into the opening, but every time we got closer, the hole shrank or changed size. It was the opposite of the optical effect when the baseball gets bigger just before it hits you. It seemed that whoever the builders are, they intend us to walk from one end of the universe to the other, not fly.
"I don't think we're going to make it, guys. The hole keeps changing size."
We stopped the ship, and the hole opened again.
"Can we dock with it at least?" Eddy asked.
"Sean? Spot me?" Rook asked.
"Yes, sir," I said with a salute.
This time, I had to do very little spotting. Rook was either a really good pilot after all, or the opening helped us by moving around as needed.
"One small step for man?" I asked while putting on my helmet. "Who's first?"
Me-yan shoved his way to the front and gave me his typical "screw you" face. Behind him was James, then Rook, then Jyong.
"Ladies first," I teased Eddy, then I followed.
The ground was not what we expected. It made sticky sounds as we walked. And we could hear, meaning there was atmosphere here, though what it was made of, we couldnt tell. James knelt down and scraped the floor with a toothpick, then put it in a test tube. He did this every few hundred feet, taking care to mark each location on the outside.
"You ever gonna run out of those things?" I asked.
"Not for a while," he replied.
"What do you think you can learn from that one you can't learn from the last 26?"
"I don't know. But I cant cut corners here," he said. He then continuing walking without so much as a "let's go" or "we had better catch up." He just got up and joined Rook and the two Chinese.
The chinese have taken to being leaders in this place, pointing and giving orders, making a whole show of it.
Eddy walked up to me with a curious look on his face. "Something smells fishy."
"How can you smell anything with these fishbowls—oh, you mean because we have fishbo—"
"No. Just listen," he interrupted, looking over at the others, who stood a fair few steps away. Me-yan looked back at us, then kept walking. "I overheard the Canadian talking to Rook. It was weird. He asked Rook 'Aren't you worried you could be next?'"
"Yeah, and what did he say?" I asked.
"he didn't say anything. He looked James in the eyes and said he would be next before Rook would."
"Next? Next for what?"
"That's what I'm going to find out. But if I need help, will you be there?"
"Help with what?"
"Im getting answeres, one way or annother.
I was shocked. "Eddy. Are you suggesting violence? I thought the British were only good at passive aggression, not the real stuff."
He told me that he was capable of more violence than I knew.
"Wait, I immediately sense an issue or three. One, we were outnumbered. Two, Rook fought a bear that one time. And three, we kinda need everyone to get home. Well, I am expendable unless holding the multimeter was an indispensable skill."
Eddy ignored my advice and called out, "Hey, James! Come back here and take a look at this."
"Oh, we're doing this now?" I whispered. "Why now?"
James jogged over. "What is it?"
Eddie pointed at the ground, and while James was inspecting it, stepped behind him. He grabbed James from behind and held the pointy end of a screwdriver to an important looking hose on his suit. "Alright, you're going to tell me what's going on. Why have you four been acting so strange? Why haven't Sean and I gotten any messages from Earth?"
"Eddy, you don't want to do this," James said.
I told him James was right, and that this wasn't the way to get answers. I don't know, I had never been in a hostage situation before.
"We don't know what the atmosphere will do to him," I reminded. "He could die here."
"Just tell me what is happening!" Eddy shouted. "It's my birthday, damn it!"
"Well, technically that ended a few hours ago," I rather helpfully added.
"Eddy," James said carefully, "let me go."
Me-yan apperently had a 6th sense, or james was broadcasting this conversation. He came running around a corner, the others in tow, and stopped about twenty feet away.
"Tell me, or i cut."
James swallowed and put on his best sympathetic voice. "Eddy, Great Britain doesn't exist anymore." He then looked to me. "Neither does America."

2024.04.14 14:59 Diligent_Eye1248 How to Enable Macros in an Embedded Excel Worksheet?

Hi, I'm having a very frustrating time currently trying to get macros enabled on an Excel worksheet that is embedded in a PowerPoint. Every time I get the error "Macros in this document have been disabled... blah blah"
Any other time to fix this I would just add a trusted location, etc. But in this case, because it's an embedded worksheet, I can't seem to FIND a location. I really cannot find a file path for it.
This Powerpoint is basically a template that needs to be opened everyday and not be saved, the embedded Excel sheet will be used everyday.
The most frustrating part by far is that this was working previously, and then the computer updated/some time passed and it is NOT working anymore
The "computer" is a Fusion5 tablet that is running Windows 11. It is domained but like I said it was working previously..
Things I have tried:
Saving a metric shit ton of trusted locations including the entire C:/ drive, Onedrive, etc. Moving the Powerpoint to a trusted location that is NOT OneDrive Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of Microsoft Office 2019 Apps, then disabling updates Open an excel sheet first, and then open the embedded worksheet <-- this WORKS but then when I go to "present" the Powerpoint, the open embedded excel sheet disappears........
Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be a Windows update that caused this vs office? I truly don't believe it's an issue with our Group Policy/IT security as it works on other devices strangely enough. I haven't been able to recreate the problem on a different device yet.

'Chick' Ball measures up. —Henry Shea

Item taken for granted is Ball family business

By HENRY SHEA
There is little historical information available to show just when the first wooden ruler came into existence but according to legend the first use of what we term "a foot" came during the reign of Charlemagne, Emperor of the Franks, 768-814 A.D.
That relatively enlightened monarch promulgated measures to establish a standard unit of length. Since his kingdom extended over what we now know as Germany, France, middle Europe and the fringe of Italy, his edicts had widespread force.
It is supposed that the actual unit chosen as a foot was the actual length of the Emperor's foot, unadorned by battle dress. This proves only that Charlemagne was a very large man. Why the foot was divided into 12 divisions or inches probably stems, say historians, from the idea behind the Gregorian calendar which divided the year into 12 periods.
Whatever the truth of this thought, the fact remains that the ruler is indispensable to industry, education and the home. It is a device which survived the change from hand production of standardized mass production which began in England about 1850 and eventually found its most notable success in the United States.
At the heart of that change were designers and draftsmen and for each separate industry some form of ruler or scale had to be created to maintain accuracy of design and production. To put the importance of the ruler in perspective, try to imagine the result if overnight every ruler now used in every drafting and architectural office disappeared. One result, besides the chaos that would ensue, would be the doubling and tripling of work schedules at Woodrow Engineering, Ellison Bay.
Woodrow Engineering is a family concern owned by the Charles Balls of Ephraim. It is the only remaining manufacturer of advertising rulers of a professional type. This means that the scales found on the ruler, whether used in home or marine design, printing, or an art studio will be as accurate as the equivalent ruler purchased from a manufacturer or supplier of drafting equipment.
And it is the reason that every step of manufacture must be controlled, from the original blank cut from a six foot billet of birch or maple to the final careful de-burring or removal of any annoying wood splinters. Twenty-four steps make up the process from raw wood to finished product and the result is a smoothly finished and attractive ruler available in a variety of sizes and styles. Sold through a network of advertising specialty distributors, most become gifts from banks, construction companies and other manufacturers to selected personnel in engineering, design and purchasing departments.
Rulers aren't just rulers. The Woodrow catalog classifies them as architectural, engineering, graphic arts, office, metric and write-in plus the director's ruler. The write-in type has special interest since it provides a blank scale on which the user may set up his own system, it is adaptable to bookkeeping, use on maps and charts where the scales may vary from one locality to another. The director's ruler is a prestige item of deep toned cherry wood with polished brass scales.
Architectural rulers are the largest volume product and come in a choice of white, aluminum and stainless steel scales. An increasing number of orders are for rulers which have a metric scale. A part of this demand comes from the growing interchange of design ideas between America and foreign manufacturers in which specifications are expressed in the metric system. Typical might be the blueprints of a new yacht design from a Swedish designer to be built by a Sturgeon Bay yard.
The sparkplug of Woodrow Engineering is obviously Charles Ball who, with his wife Ardeth as bookkeeper, son Michael and one employee not of the family, make up the work force. Charles, better known around Ephraim as "Chick," moved the business to Ellison Bay in August, 1972, after 11 years of operation at several locations in Chicago. The company itself was founded in 1946 and the Balls are the first to make it into an enterprise which has made a unique position for itself and has been profitable in its field. "Chick" Ball has been trained as both aeronautical and mechanical engineer but it is his practical and enthusiastic application of the training that enables the company to produce at moderate cost. Most of the equipotent in use is of his design, adapted from standard wood working machinery.
Efficiency, in operation, even of a small plant, requires that equipment be put to as many uses as possible. So, rulers are not the only product. The majority of foot measuring devices used by shoe stores are also a Woodrow product, the Ritz Shoe Stick. These are assembled swiftly at Ellison Bay and combine quality finish and medium cost to buyers. An adaptation of this device is a recent new product termed a "Body Caliper". It was found that patients recovering from serious body burns had the healing areas severely irritated by the wearing of normal clothing. To alleviate this, clothing supports are designed to keep the fabric from rubbing. The "Body Caliper" solved the problem of deciding on the correctly sized and shaped support.
Much of the raw material going into rulers and other devices must be shipped to Ellison Bay, hardwoods from Ohio, pre-printed or etched scales from East coast sources. But wherever possible local services are used such as reproduction proofs from the Door Reminder. Sources of good quality birch or maple within the county are being investigated and a sideline of planter boxes and decorative garden accessories from local white cedar has been developed.
One of the satisfactions for the Balls is the occupation of a factory building which has long been associated with the storage of apples, so much so that at times the odor of long gone Cortlands seeps from the walls to override even the tang of fresh shavings and the sharp bite of the clear enamels used to impart the soft glow on Woodrow professional rulers — for advertisers only.
