2024.03.22 16:34 314153 Suggestions for an Amiga Floppy Drive that does not read disks properly.

"All I see is the kickstart screen when I try to boot Workbench"
The floppy disk has a limited lifespan, the 5.25-inch floppies for the Tandy TRS-80 (Model 1 Level II, circa 1978) computer were said to not last longer than 1 year before becoming unusable. Prolonged storage in a moisture proof container in a cool location works to prevent damage to your disks from heat and moisture. Mold is an issue that arises with disks stored in warm and moist conditions, allowing the floppy disk platter to grow invisible to green/white particles. While degradation of the plastic platter from heat and age can’t be reversed, the disk might be cleaned of mold so that it works again, or not (3D printed devices exist for this).
Most Common Issue
Vintage floppy drives have issues where dust collects on the floppy drive heads, making its removal a constant issue. While a "Cleaner Disk” can do this with a bit of alcohol, actually opening your Amiga and removing the floppy drive, allows you to clean the heads by lifting the drive’s top cover off and with the use of a Q-tip swab dipped in alcohol. This is also an opportunity to blow out any other dust, to re-grease the worm-like spindle, and to oil the sliding rod at the base. Cleaning and lubricating a floppy drive may be all that is needed to bring it back to life.
Diagnosis
The quickest way to diagnose a problematic, but clean, drive is with a disk called "Amiga Test Kit" (ATK) that might be able to load from the original drive, or failing that, from a second working drive. An issue becomes loading that floppy into memory if you are stuck with OS 1.3, as it has no way to boot from an external drive without a "Boot Selector. The one recommended uses an actual switch, is less than €10, $10 or £10, and allows “live” switching. Those switches that “Soft Select,” require a reboot that wipes out the loaded Amiga Test Kit. The external floppy drive may be a mechanical one, or better yet, a Gotek.
The risky method – hint: not recommended -- for loading the Amiga Test Kit program, is to load it using a working drive, unplug the drive’s power cord, then unplug the data cable; next, plug the bad drive into the data cable, and then carefully the power cable. If the computer is still functioning -- (you haven’t shorted a power supply, capacitor, blown a fuse or a CIA) -- use the program to test your drive.
An Amiga user, dealing with 30-year-old devices, should consider having an external Gotek available. The Gotek can also replace the internal drive for other uses than drive diagnosis (such as loading multi-disk programs), by switching cables with DF0:.
Gotek Drives
These consist of a Gotek drive that has been modified with Kier Fraser's firmware, FlashFloppy, and an external floppy cable for this purpose. This external cable found was to be the Least Expensive through a series of searches. The Gotek’s main component, the AT32F415 Cortex-M4 MCU, is functional, but the AT32F435 is recommended by Kier for reasons on his FlashFloppy GitHub. Cheaply sourced from China (in the €20, £20,$20 range), a Gotek has many upsides, with the only downside being building yours inexpensively. They can be found for sale with an Organic text LED, rotary knob, and buzzer (if desired) on many sites for a wee bit more ~ 50% to 100% above the cost of parts.
Electronics
In addition, the vintage capacitors and resistors on these floppy drives may quit working and need to be replaced. The hint here is that the drive seems dead or partially dead, i.e., no clicks, no spinning, and/or no head movement. Glen at CRG has this Video showing his repair. Essentially, replace all the capacitors and check the resistors for their proper values, or barring that, look for black scorch marks at the soldered resistor ends.
Alignment
Disk drives go out of alignment with time and use. Most use an optical sensor (adjusted with a tiny screw “locked” in place with a drop of acrylic paint or epoxy); the drive will return to the optical sensor to facilitate its home position, track 0. Chris Edwards has repair videos for the problems – hint: the alignment can be solved using an Amiga Test Kit (ATK) disk (he prefers V1.18). If one uses the Amiga Test Kit disk alignment subprogram (that searches for 11 of 11 sectors read) while adjusting the sensor screw, one can re-align the drive (sometimes). The gold standard for alignment is an oscilloscope and an Alignment Disk, as this is how the drives were aligned at the factory.
Multiple sites have alignment information, for example, and several use XCopy for alignment, as it also shows the same information as the alignment segment of ATK. DuckDuckGo is your friend, and can lead you way beyond this page.
Drive Failure and Replacement
Thirty-year-old devices break, sad, but true. Replacement Amiga floppy disk drives, can be located on Amibay or auctions sites, but are also just as old and can be expensive. However, Sony only quit making the 3.5 in floppy in 2011, so there are likely PC floppy drives available that are less than 15 years old, perhaps some still new in the box. These can be modified in two ways to work with an Amiga: with the use of an adapter, or a DIY project -- Jan Beta has a video available. Many users follow the instructions on the Jope.fi website and use Samsung and Sony drives due to their availability, and 3D print files for the A500 and A1200 eject buttons, as the different cases (A500/A1200) need different sizes. Both types of floppy drives need 1 cm of the front-top cover trimmed away to fit inside the respective cases.
Also Useful
There are PC floppy drives adapted to read & write Amiga disks using a PC, these include the DrawBridge (an Arduino board based interface that is inexpensive and an easy build), and the GreaseWeazle board, that, for example, can be purchased from Sordan. You’ll need a floppy power & floppy drive cable and a working, standard PC 3.5-inch drive. This is a good way to make a floppy disk containing Amiga Test Kit from the Web.
* My Amiga drive clicks every second or so
In this case the drive may be fine, if not it is likely out of alignment. The Amiga drive checks to see if there is a disk in the drive by performing a quick check that results in a click. This means two things, the first is that the Amiga is functioning normally, and the drive “thinks” that it is; the second issue is that this noise is damn annoying and the use of Dosprefs will stop it -- and set an asterisk “*” as the default wildcard instead of “#?” in searches. Placed in the WBStartup folder, it may take a minute to kick in.
** An alternative to the Boot Selector switch, is to purchase or “burn” a Kickstart 2.04 or higher ROM, replace the 1.3, and boot from the external drive.

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

I've always been a big fan of what's coming out of the NoCopyrightSounds camp, not just for the sheer quality of the free music, but also for their eye for new talent. I can't speak for other genres of course, but just in DnB they've been responsible for pushing early tunes by Andromedik, V O E, More Plastic, Wiguez and Cream Blade, and that's just the ones that have been getting a lot of buzz in recent times! So, to celebrate that and their recent, very much appreciated focus on DnB a bit, let's take a look at two wonderful examples from this week, starting with a proper veteran of the royalty-free spheres of drum and bass.

1. Itro - Never Let You Down [NCS]

Recommended if you like: Andromedik, T & Sugah, Fitch
That's right, it's finally time to talk about Itro! One of the surprisingly many, in my eyes, (It)royally underrated artists that I have loved for ages already, but apparently never managed to talk about on here. Well, that changes today!
Born in Wijk Bij Duurstede, but nowadays based in the slightly easier to pronounce Amsterdam, it didn't take Dutchie Kelvin Rowaan very long to fall in love with all things music. During his early childhood, it was the electric guitar that brought him joy, but as soon as his brother showed him the sick beatz he created in Fruity Loops, little Kelvin jumped over to the electronic side. Through the power of YouTube tutorials, Kelvin got better and better, until the 16-year-old finally unleashed the first of many tunes as Itro in 2013. Right from the first release, the uplifting, pure happiness Nitro was fully engaged, and one hands-in-the-air EDM bop after the other fell out of him, some self-released, some distributed via Outertone. Especially his many early collaborations with Tobu seem to have hit the Zeitgeist just right, with Sunburst racking up 32 million (!!!) streams and Cloud 9 having cracked the 40 million mark (?!?!) by now.
Of course, one of the reasons for this gargantuan amount of streams was NoCopyrightSounds! As one of the very first artists to sign to the freshly founded label of the blossoming promotional channel, Itro got such a massive boost in visibility that me calling him underrated is kind of ridiculous, but since our scene for some reason doesn't care about NCS releases all too often, it arguably still applies! Anyway. What followed was one EDM House hit after the other, which, according to these weird compilations on Spotify, ranged from "Morning House" and "Study House" all the way up to "Turn It Up House", but also some glittery Future Bass and starting with Starbound even some proper DnB! Along with this delightful treasure (I)trove of releases, however, came another producer by the ominous name of totally not itro that started taking the SoundCloud scene by storm, combining the melodicality of Itro with stuff like Trap or "trying to be porter robinson" and "fucking wasps" type beats.
Unsolvable mysteries aside though, the next couple years saw Kelvin more and more break into our usual spheres here, thanks to his mates Polygon sending their remix of his tune Light and Blue to Justin Hawkes' feedback streams in 2016, who then promptly sent it to Liquicity, putting both Polygon and Itro on the map of the Dutch DnBehemoth. Around one and a half years later, Itro finally made his label debut there, on Galaxy Of Dreams 3, quickly followed by his collaborative Harmony EP with his good friends Andromedik and the aforementioned multifaceted boys. Fun fact: Since 2020 he's also part of the LiftOff agency alongside Carrier, Enthropix and said now-single-faced geometric shape!
While most of the DnB Itroutput from 2018 on found a safe home on Liquicity, the rest of his diverse genre explorations were mostly being released on his own, just as they had been since 2016 or so, with the exception of his two Ninety9Lives singles. Sure, he's always been a name closely associated with the N-to-the-C-to-the-S brand, but it actually took 8 whole years, in other words until 2023 (!), for Itro to make his triumphant return to the label that started it all for him, with the bouncy All For You! Luckily, the gap between releases wasn't quite as significant this time around, and just a couple months later we are so back, with Never Let You Down.
As many of you should know by now, I'm a total sucker for a catchy vocal hook, and Itro has never been one to, well, let me down in that regard, but with Nashville-based Drew Tyler he has truly struck gold in my opinion. Never Let You Down's upbeat trichotomic guitar-piano-drum intro, which only becomes more Indie Pop over time with the classic clap your hands together moment, is perfectly complemented by Drew's silky soft, satisfyingly multi-layered, simply fantastic performance, putting a big smile on my face before we even get to the drop. I can see why they gave each other 5 stars on SoundBetter. Speaking of the drop though: In true Itro fashion, it's equal parts uplifting, anthemic and heartwarming, thanks to the one-two-punch of an impossibly infectious, super fun synth lead melody and wonderfully warm bass. Fun fact: The first version of this drop goes back all the way to 2020, with at least 3 other versions of this same drop existing on his hard drive. Amazing things take time and all that.
It's great to see that Itro has taken Rick Astley's advice to heart, continuing his streak of not disappointing me in the slightest. Simply lovely!
Other Dancefloor goodness from this week: - Various Artists - Deadbeats & Brownies LP - Mason, Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) (1991 Remix) - Murdock - X-Ray LP - T & Sugah - Imma Give - Samstone, Aktive - My Favourite Game (feat. The Cardigans)

2. KEELA - SUN 💎 [NCS]

Recommended if you like: Not Fair, Howlan, The Outsiders
Now, for someone who celebrated their debut release on NCS this week: KEELA!
Back in September of last year, when I talked about Not Fair's absolutely wild debut, I briefly mentioned the most excellent community that's been building around Tom Finster's and barking continues' weekly WeAreHumans streams. Every Wednesday evening, one of them will go live on Twitch and either give feedback to the community's ever-improving demo submissions, do a little sample flip challenge or just take a bath and drink some Bierle for a bit. It's great fun! As already alluded to, the submissions have been reaching simply ridiculous levels over the past few months, with basically no further feedback even being needed anymore, and fortunately, that means some of these mindbendingly sick compositions are finally, actually coming out! Trust me, it won't be the last time I'm referring to the WAH gang on here these next few months.
Anyway! Among this honestly simply astonishing assortment of talents, Nico Heinsen somehow still manages to stand tall as one of the most consistently insane producers, which is why he is this week's Hidden Gem Of The Week™️! After having gotten his start into this Bass music mess by producing Dubstep type tunes as Fakefriend around the turn of the decade, the now 22-to-24-year-old (I don't know his exact birthday alright) started wanting to branch out from his roots a little bit. His first few demo submissions to the WeAreHumans streams date back as far as 2021, when he would still oscillate between Fakefriend demos and his newest project Kooma, but soon enough, the former was abandoned in favour of the latter. Well, until he rebranded again to KEELA a few years later. However, while the DnB was already part of his social handles and thus definitely a main focus, he was still stretching out his feelers (keelers) across the entire bass music spectrum all this time, working through a total of 69 (nice) ideas until he finally arrived at one that worked for him.
That 70th idea? Well, that one became SUN! Thanks to encouraging words from Bishu and Not Fair, a bunch of helpful advice from both the WAH crew and IMANU, and some first release experiences with his bootlegs of IMANU's Drowning and Tisoki, San Holo, RUNN - Go with Not Fair, the German talent managed to push it so far over the finish line that it got picked up by, who could have guessed it, NoCopyrightSounds! I mean, who could fault them! After all, SUN isn't just vibey as all hell, its powerful back-and-forth between straight-up weird synth bombs going off in your face one at a time and smaller, just-as-weird (but in a different way) (i have such a way with words) synths firing off in the most rapid of fashions is truly an auditory experience to behold. Seriously, those things are somehow distorted in such a way you didn't even know was possible, while still remaining clean as hell and melodically resonant?! As if that wasn't enough flexing for one release, he goes all out for the outro, leaving you in a total state of shock at the sheer production talent at display here.
An incredible cocktail of slick yet boundary-pushing production, with a dash of vibey vocals, all mixed down to perfection - also known as the TeKEELA SUNrise!
Other wild production from this week: - Refracta - Slave To Sound - Maysev, Matens - Wasn't meant to be - Vulture, Chiyu - Snowlight 💎 - Circumference - Alter EP - Rohaan - Boy in a Dream EP - Screamarts - Duality EP

2024.01.08 22:55 zzbb31 Thoughts + advice on my routine

Hi everyone! I tried another group but only got one response so hoping for some help here. This is going to be a long post because I'm trying to get some opinion on my routine and trying to add 2 new steps (I don't know where they should go).
A little about me (Feel free to skip this it might be a little lengthy ): I'm 23 yo girl and I have combination skin. Not really acne prone or sensitive, I just get some bumps/pimples around my chin during my time of the month. I have some hyper pigmentation but thats bc I'm south asian and I used to pick on my pimples so I dont really care about that. I don't have any skin concerns atm but I recently did move from a humid country to a cold and dry one so I mostly focus on hydration. But I have been noticing more laugh lines, lines on my forehead and underneath my eyes. (added comments at the end)
With that being said here's my routine:
  1. Elf oil cleansing balm
  2. Cerave SA cleanser
  3. COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
  4. CICAPLAST GEL B5
  5. First aid beauty ultra repair cream
^These are my non-negotiables
Sunscreen:
  1. Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum
  2. Shiseido clear sunscreen stick (for re-application)
Treatments
  1. Faded Serum (I used to use this a lot last year but now I only use it when I have new spot that has left a mark)
  2. Juice beauty green apple peel (2x a month)
  3. Caudalie Vinergetic C+ Instant Detox Mask (1x a week or more if I've been wearing heavy makeup regularly)
  4. Dr. Jart+ vital hydra solution mask (after the caudalie mask)
  5. Hydrogel eye mask ( this is just for fun so whenever i feel like it honestly)
Two things I want to add:
  1. Mediheal collagen ampoule pad - I think this should go after step no. 2 and before 3 but I feel maybe I should skip no. 3 or 4 because doing all 3 feels too much
  2. Gua sha - i dont like facial oils so I dont know what I could use as a "lubricant" from my routine bc everything is too fast drying for a 5 minute routine. if you have a good starter routine/tutorial drop it down below
Few comments:
  1. This is controversial but I dont cleanse and do my routine in the morning. I feel that it's too much for my skin and so unless I'm wearing makeup I wash with water and follow with sunscreen. If I am wearing makeup then I will just use cleanser and moisturizer before sunscreen
  2. No retinol for me. I had to use tretinoin prescribed from my doctor for a bit to spot treat a huge painful reoccurring pimple I had but then my doc said I could use it all over my face if i wanted but a) I have a few important things coming up and i'm so scared of purging so I'm not gonna do that and b) I really want to start with a beginner retinol more closer to 25.
If you made it this far, THANK YOU for reading this was tiring even to type 🫶🏽

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

After so many weeks of big, often album, reviews taking up all the space I have on here, I want to delve deep into multiple, maybe less obvious, choices this time around. Still only managed two, oh well. Let's jump right in!

1. ERWI - The Final Decay EP [Goost Music]

Recommended if you like: The Outsiders, Maysev, Rillium
We begin with Belarusian professional finger-drummer and creative producer for video production firm Forest Rock Alexander Sobol, in the music spheres also known as ERWI! From his homebase in Minsk, he has been putting out music all across the spectrum, from Hiphop-infused Trap to Future Bassy Dubstep, since at least 2019. First as mod:noise, but shortly after already rebranded to ERWI, he basically let his musical creativity run free, leading to some super interesting productions - but sadly, no drum and bass yet. Then, in early 2023, his very first DnB tune appeared on the horizon: The Final Decay! Released on Denver-based independent music label Goost Music, who describe themselves as ambassadors of Phonk, but as their signing of ERWI proves, are open for all sorts of electronic wildness, this lovely tune turned out to be the beginning of the road to his very first EP, chock-full of DnB goodness, with the same title as its first entry!
Said title track, The Final Decay, quickly shows us what visionary sonics the new-to-the-scene talent has in store for us: Wonky rhythms composed of futuristic, very much digital yet string-like synths, otherworldly bleeps and bloops and snappy drums, emerging from the chrysalis of the vocal-driven breakdown with all sorts of glitched-up versions of itself and a whole new set of fiery drum action. Continuing this theme of transformation is Metamorphosis, featuring some truly mood-setting guitar strumming by Jaysset. Soon after, this moody, apocalyptic setting of the intro is supercharged by very deliberately arranged, rather huge waves of distorted bass, short-burst weirdness and beautifully dissonant synths, resulting in a surprisingly heavy yet stunning composition. Our third stop, Collide, seems to be going for a more relaxed, yet nevertheless still very much "out there", vibe at a first glance, but as soon as we pass over the one minute mark, we suddenly switch into a way heavier parallel universe version of it, with huge, extra strange-sounding basses and relentlessly attacking heavy stabs, making it yet another great example of well-executed progression.
In a way going the structurually simpler, though not in any way less interesting, route is Feel This Way. Seemingly inspired by the likes of Hyperpop and Indie, this one is most certainly more catchy and bouncily uplifting than its predecessors, but just as uniquely produced. It's probably my favourite of the bunch! For the grand finale, however, we turn the energy levels up a couple thousand notches again, on Arces. Of course, the vocal chops that will stick in your head for a while afterwards, catchily responding to a proper all-encompassing, deeply satisfying, insurmountably big wall of synth, are the main attraction here, but the wonderful atmosphere, the sick drum switchup in the breakdown and all the other quite vibey elements of the tune are just as important to complete that send-off feeling in my eyes.
Out of seemingly nowhere, ERWI effortlessly swerves his way right into my favourite releases of 2023 list, with his sweet, catchy melodic arrangements, composed of all sorts of wonky, slightly off-centre rhythms and outside-the-box production elements. Wonderful!
Other techy/unique things from this week: - Various Artists - Zeitgeist Remixes (10 Year Anniversary) - The Caracal Project - I hope I don't break your knees. - Malcuth, Grey Code - Solitude Pt. 2 - Age Of Espion, YAANO - Disappear - Sign - Lullaby

2. Phrase - Borderline EP [DLT9]

Recommended if you like: Rift, Monrroe, Alix Perez
Next on my list of naughty releases: Conor Butler, also known as Phrase!
While I would be also be super happy to simply feature another "ordinary" new talent emerging out of New Zealand, this Wellington-based newcomer is actually a little different from the others I regularly talk about here: he's a liquid lad! He likes dabbling in deep stuff too, to be fair, but that didn't roll of the tongue that well. Inspired by the sounds coming out of Alix Perez's 1985 Music, Conor has been rolling in the deep (couldn't help myself) since 2018, with the first self-uploads having arrived in 2020. As is tradition for newcomers, he got his start by mostly twisting and turning his favourite songs into DnB, or more specifically Liquid and Deep DnB (with some 140 bits following later on!), with Billy Eilish, Drake and Jack Harlow being his most famous victims. Conor wasn't just keen on becoming a well(ington) sick producer though, he was also sharpening his DJing skills along the way, with guest mixes for Capital Doof and BURNA and an entry for George FM's Cellar Stage Wildcard mix competition.
2022 was when it all started coming together for him though. Not only did he land his debut release on Artsea's onesevenfour, the Southern Lights EP, his tunes were also part of the Wellington DnB and Radio Crimes compilations on Norman Foreman. Simultaneously, he also started experimenting in Tech House, with his Capital Gruuv duo! In a rather fortunate turn of events (this stuff really doesn't happen often enough), European labels started taking notice of his productions and just a year later, he secured a release with none other than Skankandbass! As if that wasn't already enough, he now follows that up with his 4-tracker Borderline on Italian Delta9 offshoot DLT9, joining the ranks of Resslek, Martial Taktics, Am:x and Geostatic.
So what have we got here then? Well, let's start off nice and easy, with EP opener Too High: heavily reverberated, marvellously atmospheric vibes, created by a well-crafted combination of a simply lovely vocal, pleasantly shuffle-rolling drums and warm basses roaring their head every now and then. Wonderful! We roll into its follow-up Because Of You with similarly vibey expectations, but soon enough, the heaviness creeps in. Heavy blasts of bass dissolving into barely controlled, goosebump-inducing assaults on the senses, on top of more steppy rhythms, while the vocals keep the vibes alive throughout. Just now, I was googling Kiwi slang phrases to throw in here so I don't just say "it's sick guys" all the time, but I feel like I would legit just make a right old cunt out of myself if I attempted to pull off any of these. Allow me to demonstrate: Such a skux tune this. See?
Anyway, after this mean as banger of a tune, we go back to the realms of big, vibey basses, with the title track Borderline. While the big focus is certainly on the gargantuan basses scratching your brain in all the right ways, I'd argue it's the precisely rhythmic flow of the drums and the gorgeous moody vocals that really make this tune the vibe that it is. Lastly, we've got one more stinker to look at: Dropper! With a bass reminiscent of a lovecraftian creature arising from the deepest depths of the sea and making itself known with its earthshattering cries, you don't need much more than maybe some catchy vocal phrases (I had to say it at least once) and some minimalistic techy drums and, as you can tell from this tune, you've got a banger on your hand.
What's the Phrase again? The Butler did it? Sounds about right!
Other liquid/deep things from this week: - DNMO, Cammie Robinson - Don't Let Me Go - IYRE - Where Words Fail - AEON:MODE, L8NCY - Touch - Fred again.., Baby Keem - leavemealone - OUTSHADES, Annastacia Boudwin - Ghost - Motiv - Sense Of Flow EP

2023.12.07 05:56 manluther Dershowitz-Finkelstein Affair (AKA The Dersh-Fink Beef) Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Academia.

Key: Norm/Finkel/Fink = Norman Finkelstein / Dersh = Dershowitz
What is my interest in this? I strive for full historicity. The idea of a Jewish lawyer and a Jewish political scientist fighting over the historiography of Is/Pa seemed like supreme cancer, and I'd much like to die sooner. I tried to make this as "fun" as possible, despite it all. I may have missed some things, I wanted to get this out ASAP because tiny is ending the arc (copium).
It is of NO debate that Dershowitz and Finkelstein are ideological opponents. I really don't have to prove this. Dershowitz is a public & staunch Zionist, Finkelstein is the exact opposite. You will see my conclusion towards the end, but know from the start that I do have a bias against Finkelstein, however I'm not a Dershowitz supporter either. (The whole, "trying to debate President Jimmy Carter after he correctly suggested Israeli occupied Palestinian territory was a blockade to peace" is legitimately unhinged) Sill, this whole thing only continues to solidify my belief that Finkel is a crusading pundit, not a historian, and certainly not a good faith actor. (Or at the very, very, very least, incredibly academically insensitive and vitriolic.) Writing this retrospectively, It feels this whole affair was a huge flashpoint in Finkelstein's life, one that made him the person he is now. His way of criticizing Zionism has remained similar, but has become increasingly dishonest since this beef.
For clarity, a lot of the original articles detailing this have been deleted (PEPE) or have broken links. So cut me some slack. Don't believe me? Check the wiki, look at the info in these wikipages, follow the footnotes. With the ones I checked, it seems all but a few are no longer accessible. I managed to find a few on the archive, however.
  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Finkelstein#Criticism_of_Alan_Dershowitz's_The_Case_for_Israel
  2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Dershowitz#Norman_Finkelstein
  3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dershowitz%E2%80%93Finkelstein_affair#
I did manage to find some more info through google searches. You can find everything I used at the end. Also, its real easy to tell these two dislike each other because over a decade later, and despite publications removing articles, they still have some of the correspondence on their websites.
Finkel's Thoughts out the Gate:
Dershowitz's book, The Case for Israel, published by Wiley, and released in 2003, was claimed by Finkelstein to be a, "Collection of fraud, falsification, plagiarism, and nonsense."
"If Dershowitz's book were made of cloth, I wouldn't even use it as a schmatta (...) his book is such garbage." - Jewish(?) insult from Finkelstein.
The Damning Issue:
(False) Plagiarism accusation/academic charge on Dershowitz levied by Finkelstein.
The conclusion: Finkelstein accused Dershowitz of stealing a journalist's disproven thesis, data, and sources.
In my honest opinion, this reads like Finkel soying out and trying to cancel Dersh's book before cancelling was mainstream. It's pretty easy to tell that what he saw in Dershowitz's book was the same boogeyman he previously dismantled in Time Immemorial. The worst part? He had received international recognition for his takedown of Peters' book, and the academic community was eager to see Finkel's next work.
Things like this in his past are quite damning: https://i.gyazo.com/b88a23a431145514661d63d8fec261c5.png
Now, I'm not saying that Fink might have gotten his later dishonest footnote summaries from a book he himself academically destroyed, but, you know the saying, monkey see monkey do. I also have a conspiracy theory that Norm dodged the debate because his public image couldn't handle having the same academic stains as Joan Peters. Hell, this dude even targeted Elie Wiesel, like, come the fuck on Norm...
Bonus Meme: Funnily enough, Finkel's allegations would stir up a slurry of even more accusations of plagiarism at Harvard Law School. These were mainly directed at professors completely detached from the affair; Charles Ogletree and him taking credit for his assistants work, as well as Laurence Tribe who was directly accused of plagiarism.
A Small Timeline:
  1. After Finkel's initial criticisms, Dersh wrote to The New Press & The University of Cali Press to try and prevent publication of, Beyond Chutzpah, claiming libel and stating it shouldn't be published.
  2. Finkel releases book anyway with the above criticisms (GIGACHAD).
  3. Dersh responds in a follow-up book, The Case for Peace, alleging a politically & ideologically motivated McCarthyism from Finkelstein, Chomsky, & Alex Cockburn, to vilify and discredit himself and several other pro-Israel/Zionist academics.
    • This is speculation, but it is pretty sus these three guys are all close friends and attacked Dershowitz at the same time. All three of these people have written poorly about Dershowitz and his book. I cannot find Chomsky speaking about the allegations of plagiarism, however.
    • I don't know who the other academics Dersh is referencing could be, he might just mean Jewish academics in general.
    • Finkel has an unhealthy obsession with calling Zionists Nazis, or alluding that Jewish academics are like (insert Nazi or modern day Neo-Nazi person here).
    • Cockburn allegedly received a grant of $10,000 from an "anti-Israel foundation" if you believe Dershowitz.
Bonus meme (Unhinged Dershowitz moment): https://postimg.cc/8jkThCjs
Who the Fuck is Alexander Cockburn?
Bonus Memes
  1. His quite famous journalist father popularized the phrase, "believe nothing until it is officially denied," and worked briefly for The Daily Worker covering the Spanish Civil War for Harry Pollitt, a task he was heavily criticized for by George Orwell. He did end up leaving the British Communist Party, however. Cockburn's father also wrote, "Beat the Devil."
  2. Olivia Wilde is his niece.
He wrote this article here where he hilariously compares Dershowitz to infamous French holocaust denier Faurisson, someone who Dersh had criticized in the past for being an ahistorical hack. Once again, a man falls prey to the Finkel mind virus, because most of his justification that Dersh committed this academic crime was from good ol' Finkflestein and his 20 counts of bad literary behavior.
Cockburn's first example...
"'In the sixteenth century,' the learned Dershowitz remarks on the seventeenth page of his book, 'according to British reports, ‘as many as 15,000 Jews’ lived in Safad, which was a ‘center of rabbinical learning.' Source cited by Dershowitz: Palestine Royal Commission Report, pp. 11-12. Turn now to page 178 of Peters’s book, published nineteen years earlier: 'Safed at that time, according to the British investigation by Lord Peel’s committee, ‘contained as many as 15,000 Jews in the 16th century,’ and was ‘a centre of Rabbinical learning.' Source cited by Peters: Palestine Royal Commission Report, pp. 11-12. Originality displayed by Dershowitz: downgrading “Rabbinical” to a lower-case r" (Cockburn, 2003).
Repeat this snarky analysis of Dershovitz's book for 3 more paragraphs, followed by some minor insults on Cockburn's part. Not suspicious at all, right?
These accusations would especially begin to sting the Dersh accusers when (former) Harvard president Derek Bok, who personally led the reviewing committee following a request from Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan and calls by Dershowitz (GIGACHAD) to investigate the book and accusations, where the committee determined that no plagiarism had occurred in the book. I think its safe to say that, unfortunately, Finkelstein & co.'s remarks had already done their damage in the media by this point.
Bok's public statement: https://postimg.cc/cKWWL4ys
Well, shit. Ain't looking good for Norman.
Norm V2
https://www.tiktok.com/@elevatedenergynetwork/video/7301004740459040033 Most honest and not deliberately cut TikTok propaganda vid.
Following a call-out from Dershowitz, who challenged anyone for $10,000 of his own money to be given directly to the PLO, confrontation was on the horizon. Dersh postulated that if someone could find a historical fact in his book that can be proven false, he would donate the money, and It seemed Finkelstein was up for the challenge, coming prepared with some actual academic criticism. Thank. Fucking. God.
BUT WAIT (TF) HE IS CLAIMING DERSHOWITZ'S SOURCING IS WRONG, AGAIN!
In 2003, on the show Democracy Now! Finkelstein was given a chance to explain publicly, and to Dershowitz himself, once again why The Case for Israel was the historically inaccurate book he claimed. He, of course, focused on the material errors of the book rather than the historiography. He started off by coping about Joan Peters plagiarism and wouldn't drop the issue until the focus was readjusted after a commercial break. He did, however, find one critical error in Dershowitz's writing.
THIS: https://i.gyazo.com/2aeeb3405e5da6c1f3411f4f017333a4.png
"I'm interested in the scholarship," yeah, we can tell dude.
Just kidding, in The Case for Israel Dershowitz attributed a factoid to Israeli historian Benny Morris, about events happening in 1948 related to the Haganah. On page 80 of his book, after quoting a passage by Morris in an effort to discredit an argument made by Chomsky, he writes, "Morris estimates that between two and three thousand Arabs fled their homes during this phase of the Arab-initiated fighting".
I did indeed find the error.
In Benny Morris' book, The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem 1st edition, page 128 off my libgen copy, the date specific Arab exodus encompassed 200,000-300,000 refugees. So I checked them all. My libgen copy of Morris' 1999 Righteous Victims, page 256 also stated clearly a number of 200,000 -300,000 Arabs who fled during the second stage of the exodus. In Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited, again, by Morris, page 602 provides insight to a more up-to-date number count.
"(the) British, in February 1949, thought that there were 810,000 (refugees), of whom 210,000 were in the Gaza strip, 320,000 in the West Bank, and 280,000 in Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan (East Bank)" McNeil response to question by Brigadier Rayner, 16 Feb. 1949, PRO FO 371–75419 E2297\1821\31.
So, the numbers are closer to 700,000 - 800,000 refugees in total throughout the exodus' stages.
Here is the vast majority of Dershowitz response, on the same show:
"Obviously, the phrase 2,000 to 3,000 Arabs refers either to a sub-phase or is a typographical error." - Dershowitz
(...)
"Let me focus on the 2,000 or 3,000. This is such an obvious point. What is the context I'm arguing. I'm arguing that lots and lots of Arabs in distinction to what Chomsky said were told to leave by their Arab commanders. Obviously it's in the interest of that argument to maximize the number who would leave. Only an idiot would deliberately minimize the number who'd leave."
(...)
"I'm talking about myself now. I would have been an idiot had I used 2,000 when actual number was 2 to 300. If you wanted to make an accusation you would say instead of saying 2 to 300. He said 4-500,000. Remember the argument, the argument I'm making is that lots of the Palestinian refugees left, left as the result of orders from their leaders during this period of time. So my incentive if we take Mr. Finkelstein would be to exaggerate the number. Now he accuses me of reducing the number by 100 fold. Obviously there are only two possible explanations."
After that we hop right back into soy virtue signaling of the accusations. https://i.gyazo.com/188ef8de949ec52b47dbb22f86b686c6.png
Then: https://i.gyazo.com/d432034ed94e71208b6c7b77bc846d52.png
They begin to talk about torture and international human rights groups. It ends shortly afterward. Dershowitz then ups the bet to $25,000 and reiterates that if anyone could disprove a historical fact in his book he would donate the money to the PLO. IIRC the offer still stands.
This whole number issue goes into another issue over whether Ben-Gurion had a "master plan" to expel the Arabs which there is evidence to support. However there is also evidence against this showing Ben-Gurion, "regarded the escape as a calculated withdrawal of non-combatant population upon the orders of Arab commanders and out of military considerations." This would be evidenced by the Protocol of Ben-Gurion's consultation with the Haganah's high command, 9 January 1948 and his speech of 6 April 1948 at the meeting of the Zionist Action Committee, summarized by History Professor Yoav Gelber. Unfortunately I can't get into all of that here.
The Chomsker
This is where the information went completely fucking dark. These are the only things I could find. In order they are, opinion pieces on Isreali civil-rights activist and Professor Israel Shahak, Dershowitzs' statement mentioning a debate on the above issues, Dershowitz justifying his persecution complex and the literary McCarthyism meme, and finally a debate between the two. I got to be honest, Dershowitz sounded very based in this video. I don't know if he has changed his opinion since then.
I found (of course a deleted article) evidence of Chomsky describing Dershowitz as, "a complete liar" and "on a crazed jihad, dedicating much of his life trying to destroy my reputation." This is a pretty unhinged comment, but depressingly normal for our cast of old cooks here.
Starting around a minute into the video debate, Dershowitz introduction went like this:
"(When we first met) (...) Chomsky advocated for a one-state solution like Yugoslavia or Lebanon" was a hilarious jab at a younger, less politically aware Chomsky. Man, Chomksy was fucking wild back in the day. You would not catch my ass denying the Cambodian genocide.
"The debate today occurs at real potential for peace Shamon Perez, Israel's elder stateman in the peace camp, today quit the labor party and announced his support for Ariel Sharon in the upcoming election. Quote, 'In my eyes it is not a problem of party but a problem of peace, how to create a strong coalition for peace. The elements are now in place for real peace.' As I wrote, In the Case for Peace, 'when the Palestinian leadership wants a Palestinian state more than it wants to see the destruction of Israel there will finally be a two-state solution.' The Untimely death Of Arafat makes the two-state solution a real possibility, I call Arafat's death untimely, because if it had occurred five years earlier, we might now be celebrating the anniversary of Palestinian statehood (Dershowitz, Alan. "Noam Chomsky debates Alan Dershowitz + Q&A (2005)." Youtube, uploaded by Manufacturing Intellect, Sep 9 2017, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dvMdSuLKCE.
He goes on to argue broadly that the world needs to move forward with compromise. Quoting Amos Oz in his comparison of a one-state solution to a Shakespearean play of a fantasy land where everyone ends up dead, in contrast to a Chekhovian play where the story ends with everyone bitter, angry, but alive; the two-state solution. Dershowitz denounces hateful rhetoric on both Israeli and Palestinian sides, and recognizes Chomsky's more recent (late for the time) admissions that a two-state solution is the, "best of the rotten ideas around," and that right of return is, "pandering to their people and misleading (Palestinians) into believing that there is yet another weapon, demographic weapon, that can destroy Israel." Announcing his support for the end of occupation of all Palestinian cities and population centers. Finally, he ends by denouncing terrorism and calling on anti-Zionists to stop denouncing Israel, not recognizing Israel, and for Zionists to quit pushing the idea of a Greater Israel and enforcing occupation.
Chomsky responds with his usual pessimism, which is directly written about by him in his book, Keine Chance für den Frieden. Roughly, "No Chance for Peace." Brings up Bantustan arguments and heavily criticizes the wall, occupation, and how Israel's current modus operandi is a practical blockade to any solution, which he backs up by U.S. data as well as other credible sources. Furthermore he criticizes Israel's investment into East Jerusalem and West Bank settlements, and the prime minister at the time approving expansion plans. Nothing seems overly wrong here, until he brings up the typical SoyPoint U.N. general assembly and security council orders of compliance, which aren't legally binding. Brings up the HORRIBLE 1971 peace meme by Sadat, which offered no negotiations with Israel, as a failure on Israel's part, and overall goes fucking unhinged in his dogshit historiography.
Isn't it funny how the online discourse has been set back 20 fucking years? Thanks Norm.
He then continues and pulls a classic Chomsker, spending twice as much introduction time as Dershowitz, and not actually addressing anything Dershowitz says. It then goes into Q&A. So the debate was fucking useless and imo a complete waste of time unless you really want to know what they both think, which I just summarized for you.
Chomsky is known for being a bit weaselly in the past, but I give him some slack because I've also changed my opinion on Israel/Palestine in light of historical and modern events. Surely he has changed his opinions, surely.
In the media-published letters, Chomsky attempts to counter Dershowitz argument against Israeli being "a racist society" and against his argument discrediting professor Shahak and his alleged disinformation. Honestly, I can't say Chomsky did all that well here, it seems Shahak was voted(?) out of his position and he's upset the new guys from the labor party condemned the Soviet Union. Chomsky also says that Arabs were not allowed into the Mapai Labor Party, but I can't find any evidence of that, rather the opposite. Bro is just a disinformation machine. https://postimg.cc/yWb6mZSx
I've found many things that make Chomsky look fucking unhinged. For example he allegedly defended Faurisson's claim of the Holocaust hoax and praised his historical work. What I have found though doesn't really make him look as dishonest as Finkelstein, and I think Dershowitz is a bit unhinged in his treatment with Chomsky.
Enter New Challenger, Menetrez (WHOMEGALUL)
Frank Menetrez is a California 4th district appeal judge, at the time a Los Angeles attorney. He write this article The Case Against Alan Dershowitz at the tail end of the beef in 2008 where he stans Finkelstein and says that he's right, accuses Harvard of "not investigating the identical errors issue" and overall acts like a butthurt taylor swift fan after someone tweets a mean comment about her. He e-mails a bunch of Harvard people and gets back, "please reference my statements from x years ago thank you bye" type of response. I honestly can't be fucked to analyze another lawyer bring up the same allegations from years ago. I rate Menetrez a 0/10 addition. He didn't even have insults in his conspiracy article like Cockburn did.
Here is the TLDR of the article: https://i.gyazo.com/0a7aed6da52dde03fd1f4898c6d930b5.png
Response from Dershowitz: https://www.counterpunch.org/2008/02/26/menetrez-s-false-allegations/
I cant be fucking bothered. I know it will be the same as his response to Finkelstein and Cockburn...
My conclusion:
So, what are the consequences? Well, in typical fashion Finkelstein, with his unseeming soyness and untamable inner chutzpah, lost him a lot of credibility at DePaul and broadly in the academic world. A few years after the beef the political science committee at DePaul investigated and concluded that Dershowitz conspiracy of literary McCarthyism was bullshit, and in 2007 multiple academic departments in Depaul voted to keep his tenure, albeit with heavily dissenting minority voters displeased with his conduct. However, the University's board of Promotion and Tenure voted 4-3 to deny him tenure later in the year. His right to appeal was affirmed, however many students and faculty members did some protesting and tried to remove the administration bla bla bla. He ended up resigning in Sept 2007. To this day it remains one of the most publicized issues surrounding academic freedom. The University denied that Dershowitz had anything to due with their decision, rather pointing towards Finkelstein's behavior and reputation as being harmful to the University and its own reputation.
These allegations are almost certainly made in bad faith. Each argument has very little substance and enough holes to sink Noah's Ark. This damn near 8 year shit slinging fest only seems to have served to push Dershowitz further into the crazy Zionist camp, while his detractors end up ashamed schemers known for being unacademic benders of truth. It only makes me think that Dershowitz was more correct in his book than Finkelstein would like.
Finkel is somewhere in pundit land. Lil bro has lost the plot since before the 2000's, and seems to be willing to participate in under-the-table academic quackery to push his worldview. This includes the aforementioned, "critical analysis" (read: allegations) of other academic's historiographies, as well as his own dishonest and half-truth retellings in his, "history books." Need I remind you...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-DTIR-evko -- Finkel on Hebdo Terror Attack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOMHB1JZxgc -- the footnote incident
And here, because I don't actually hate Finkelstein, here is his moment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD9HoiFewyc
Nevermind, these comments are actually unhinged wtf.
To me it's fairly obvious. Finkel hates Dersh and fucking loathed his book, and this hatred seems to stem from the popularity of an earlier book, From Time Immemorial. I couldn't find much information on why exactly he hates it so much. I could only find vague allusions that anti-Israel talking points in the late 80's & 90's were heavily criticized and fell out of favor because of this books popularity.
The murky morality of Finkelstein finding error-based-plagiarism in the book is far too blurry. It's fine to hate someone you are critically analyzing, but there are far too many moments where Finkel was obviously unhinged and sprite-driven for this to be true academic analysis in any way shape or form.
Join me next time when I actually read the books.

:Lake Titicaca and the Anunnaki:

The Tiahuanaco culture is very enigmatic: it has been called the oldest civilization in history (older than Sumer). It has also been compared to Atlantis. One hypothesis says that in this culture there are indications of the Anunnaki presence in Peru and Bolivia, due to archaeological finds of gold pieces under Lake Titicaca:
“We found important archaeological formative material, typical of the Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures, and also material from the 19th and 20th centuries. That is, we have 2,000 to 2,500 years of history here. These are the first pieces of gold we have found. Also, a rudder and an anchor that would be from a pre-Hispanic boat. ”According to the archaeologist Marcial Medina Huanca, these pieces belong to the Tiahuanaco people, based on their iconography. The hypothesis of the academics is that many of the artifacts were offerings of the inhabitants of Tiahuanaco that they had thrown into Lake Titicaca."
Many structures have been identified under the surface of Titicaca. In 1966, Ramón Avellaneda and his team of divers found a paved road and seven buildings. Likewise, the academic Hugo Boero Rojo announced in 1980 that he had discovered these structures, as well as temples and stairways. This also ties in to Legend of El Dorado, where tons of Gold was dumped into a lake. https://mysteriousthing.com/the-anunnaki-and-the-hidden-mysteries-of-lake-titicaca-ancient-contact-between-sumer-and-south-america

:Zulu Origin Story:

The Zulu Origin story is another one that has similarities and connections with the Anunnaki. It speaks of a time when 'visitors from the Stars' came to excavate Gold and other natural resources. According to the ZULU, these mines were worked by slaves created by the 'First People.'
Here's a link to learn more about the Zulu Tribe. https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/big-history-project/what-is-big-history/origin-stories/a/origin-story-zulu

:The Invasion of Iraq and the Epic of Gilgamesh Tablet:

In 2003, professor Jorg Fassbinder claimed to have discovered the grave of Gilgamesh, since it looks extraordinarily similar to the one depicted in the “Epic of Gilgamesh”. According to the epic, Gilgamesh is said to have been buried in a tomb under the Euphrates. http://occulted.org/2021/01/03/nimrod-gilgamesh-osiris/
However, it seems that the excavation had to be stopped due to the numerous conflicts of the nation. Nevertheless, a group of onlookers apparently managed to record the event and leak it in numerous places across the internet. Very shortly after, Americans got there and the Iraq War started. The Iraq War began in March, 2003. The Tomb of Gilgamesh was said to be found also in March of 2003. In Iraq. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/03/us-to-return-17000-looted-ancient-artefacts-to-iraq

:The Dogon Origin Story:

In Mali, West Africa, lives a tribe of people called the Dogon. The Dogon are believed to be of Egyptian decent and their astronomical lore goes back thousands of years to 3200 BC. According to their traditions, the star Sirius has a companion star which is invisible to the human eye. This companion star has a 50-year elliptical orbit around the visible Sirius and is extremely heavy. It also rotates on its axis. According to one of their legends, a race called the 'Nommos' visited the Earth from the star Sirius thousands of years ago. https://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends-africa/dogon-s-extraordinary-knowledge-cosmos-and-cult-nommo-0010059
Here's a link to the book titled 'The Sirius Mystery' by Robert Temple. Temple argues in his book that the legend must be true and aliens did indeed visit the Dogon. https://archive.org/details/TheSiriusMystery1

:Sirius and the Dog Star Connection:

"In Ancient Egypt, Sirius was regarded as the most important star in the sky. In fact, it was astronomically the foundation of the Egyptians’ entire religious system. It was revered as Sothis and was associated with Isis, the mother goddess of Egyptian mythology. Isis is the female aspect of the trinity formed by herself, Osiris and their son Horus. Ancient Egyptians held Sirius in such a high regard that most of their deities were associated, in some way or another, with the star. Anubis, the dog-headed god of death, had an obvious connection with the dog star and Toth-Hermes, the great teacher of humanity, was also esoterically connected with the star." https://vigilantcitizen.com/hidden-knowledge/connection-between-sirius-and-human-history/

:The Emerald Tablets of Thoth and their connection to the Anunnaki:

The Emerald Tablets of Thoth are said to reveal secrets of creating the Philosopher's Stone. 'Thoth' was an Atlantean King who ruled ancient Egypt for 16,000 years, supposedly. After the sinking of his land, he traveled to Egypt where he established his colony. The tablets state it is Thoth who built the Great Pyramid of Giza, not Cheops, as a repository for Atlantean knowledge and a place for initiating great souls such as Solomon and Jesus Christ into the Mysteries. It's all intricately connected in many ways.
Hermes, in his third incarnation, the Thrice Born, wrote 'The Emerald Tablets' which became the basis for the ancient Mysteries. The tablets were left in the care of pyramid priests. From here, they were taken to the Maya of South America. I'm not going to go into too much detail here, but if you haven't read the Tablets check them out. Here's a link to the PDF on Google Scholar: https://books.google.com/bookshl=en&lr=&id=MXQWqifpxvEC&oi=fnd&pg=PA301&dq=the+emerald+tablets+of+thoth&ots=THOr0LeKCp&sig=ysYtpbsS2WfKWTVSBlkigL_231w
Here's a link to an analysis on the connection between the Emerald Tablets and the Anunnaki: https://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sumer_anunnaki/esp_sumer_annunaki09.htm

:The Secret Race of Giants:

Over 1000 accounts of seven-foot and taller skeletons have reportedly been unearthed from ancient burial sites over a two-hundred-year period in North America alone. I don't think I have to go into too much detail here. You get the picture...... Here's a link to an article I found interesting, going into the connections between the Giants, the Anunnaki, and the Nephilim. They also have connections to The Anasazi, which is below. https://www.ancient-origins.net/unexplained-phenomena/anunnaki-revealed-finding-nephilim-myth-giants-among-men-part-ii-009140

Legend of El Dorado:

The 'Legend of El Dorado' is often associated with gold rituals, performed by the Muisca people at Lake Guatavita in Columbia. The legend says that the Muisca people dumped lots of gold at the lake. This sacred site continues to attract gold hunters. Researchers believe that the bottom of the lake has evidence of extraterrestrial life that came to Earth in search of gold.Check this link out: https://abcnews.go.com/ABC_Univision/Entertainment/aliens-love-gold-humans/story?id=19556948

:The Anasazi:

The term 'Anasazi' was primarily by the Navajos and translates into 'Ancient Ones.' The Paiute oral tradition holds that the Si-Te-Cah, or Anasazi, were a race of red-haired, cannibalistic giants who the Paiutes exterminated long ago. https://www.ancient-origins.net/ancient-places-americas/anakim-0014551

:The Urantia Book:

- This book is a channeling and was written sometime between the 1920'2 and the 1950's. 'The Urantia Book' goes pretty in depth about the early events of human prehistory and the dawn of human civilization, including the arrival on earth around 500,000 years ago of the original Planetary Prince, 'Prince Caligastia' and his staff of 100 assistants who were immortal spiritual beings of non-human origin. According to the book, some of those beings' DNA was spliced with human DNA. The Urantia Book also had an account of the 'Caligastia Rebellion' as a local planetary event. Here's a link to download this book as well. https://www.urantia.org/urantia-book/read-urantia-book-online

2023.08.24 19:30 abu_doubleu Life and Travel in Resolute and Grise Fiord, Nunavut - Land of polar days, polar nights, and polar bears

Life and Travel in Resolute and Grise Fiord, Nunavut - Land of polar days, polar nights, and polar bears
I decided to write this after seeing the great interest people have in the Canadian Arctic here. I live way down south near the American border, like 4/5 of all Canadians, but I've read extensively about life in the Canadian Arctic and hope to provide some insight into the harsh lives people have here. So, to begin...
Lots of people know about Alert, located on the northern edge of Ellesmere Island. But nobody really lives in Alert. While permanently inhabited, it's only researchers and military there.
Welcome to probably the harshest inhabited places on Earth. Yes, on Earth. Resolute, population 183, and Grise Fiord, population 144.
Resolute in...April.
Located at latitudes of 74.7 and 76.9 degrees north, respectively, the southern equivalents of these towns would be firmly within Antarctica. The only civilian settlements farther north are Qaanaaq in Greenland (which, while still cold, is much warmer), and a few towns in Svalbard (not nearly as cold). And unlike Oymyakon in Siberia, where winters can go down to -65 Celsius but the summers are warm, there is no growing season at all to make up for it.
Winter highs rarely exceed -25 degrees Celsius. In July, the average daytime temperature is +7 degrees in Resolute and +6 degrees in Grise Fiord. It rains about half the summer, by the way, and regular snowfall happens all year long. Wildlife is very hard to come by here.
So...why does anybody even live here?
Well...they didn't exactly choose it.
This is one of those injustices that the Canadian government committed at a time when Indigenous people were not viewed as equals.
The Inuit people have their limits too. They traditionally mostly lived in northern Québec, in towns like Inukjuak and Kuujjuaq. This region is called Nunavik. Summer temperatures reach above 15 degrees Celsius fairly commonly here, even up to 20 is normal. The sun still sets at nighttime. In the winter, daytime will usually go above -20 degrees Celsius, with a bit over 6 hours of sunlight. Harsh, but far better than northern Nunavut.

They were moved more than 2,000km north! That's like somebody from Florida being plopped down in a Minnesota winter and expected to learn everything immediately.
In the 1950s, with the Cold War ramping up, the Canadian government decided that they need to be much more proactive in asserting Arctic sovereignty. To do this, the military was dispatched to forcefully relocate Inuit from Nunavik to the newly-formed settlements of Resolute and Grise Fiord. The Inuit were told that they will be able to preserve their traditional style of life up north, but upon arrival, they realised that was a lie. (This also happened in Greenland. Upon request by the American government, Denmark was more than willing to forcefully relocate Greenland Inuit to present-day Qaanaaq, to allow the United States to build a military base where they used to live.)
Wildlife may not be as plentiful in Nunavik as it is in most parts of the world, but compared to Resolute and Grise Fiord? It's like the Amazon. The resettled Inuit struggled to maintain their traditional hunting habits at first. As mentioned, they were moved more than 2,000km from their homes. There was a lack of any greens to eat as well, something that was able to be found in Nunavik.
Also, the Canadian government relocated Inuit from both Nunavik and southern Nunavut. They thought that they would be able to help each other, but due to dialectal differences they found conversation difficult for a few years!
But not only were they unused to the patterns of the few wildlife and different flora up in the high Arctic, they struggled with the far colder temperatures and lack of sunlight for 4 months a year. This earned Resolute the name of "Qausuittuq" in Inuktitut, meaning "Place with no dawn", and Grise Fiord "Aujuittuq", or "Place that never thaws".
However, the Inuit have always been a very sturdy people. They did not give up, and learnt the ways that the animals in these new and unfamiliar environments migrated. They had to learn how to hunt in complete darkness during the polar nights. They had to learn how to get proper nutritional intake. In the end, they succeeded, and everybody survived the first few winters. But harsher winters in the 1970s caused malnutrition and miscarriages. Simply put...this is not a place for humans to inhabit.
For a long time, there was no radio or phone connection to the outside world. Eventually, the communities became a bit less isolated. In the past two decades, the Canadian government has acknowledged its wrongs. A fund was created for Inuit who wanted to leave Resolute and Grise Fiord and return to their ancestral communities they were taken from as young adults (you'll find out how expensive it is to get there, or leave, later). Life here is still harsh, but not like it was at first.
So, what is life like there today?
Hard. It's very hard.
If one of the 500 or so people in this entire Earth with connections to Resolute or Grise Fiord could comment here, it would be amazing, because all I have is having read a few books, Wikipedia articles, and some personal accounts I've read on Canadian news sites.
It's really expensive, for starters. In a place as isolated as Grise Fiord, food prices get insanely expensive. The only way to procure food made outside of Ellesmere Island is the local co-op, which has had management issues for a long time, with basic products like milk unavailable for months. I was unable to find how much groceries in Resolute and Grise Fiord cost, but even in Iqaluit, Nunavut's most connected city to the rest of Canada, a bag of frozen berries can easily cost over 25 CAD. One bottle of iced tea costs 17 CAD. A box of aluminium foil costs 60 CAD.
Inuit elders eating maktaaq.
This means that Inuit "country food" (traditional food) is therefore more common here than anywhere else in Nunavut. This includes dishes like maktaaq (raw whale blubber) and dried walrus meat.
Because of the isolation that the Resolute and Grise Fiord Inuit had until the 1990s, they maintained a lot of hunting practices and knowledge of arts and crafts that other Inuit had gradually forgotten. Some famous artists include Looty Pijamini from Grise Fiord and Simeonie Amagoalik from Resolute.
Today, some Inuit make their way up to these communities with the purpose of learning more about their ancestral practices. Lots of Inuit youth are especially interested in learning about hunting. Not only does it connect them to the land more, but it's really almost a necessity with the aforementioned expensive food prices. Children have a very unique time growing up in communities this small. Throat singing and hockey alike are common activities for children to practice here.
Children playing in an inflatible pool in Grise Fiord's short summer.
With all the many difficulties mentioned about life up here comes the dark truth that most families are very toxic. Both communities have heavy restrictions on alcohol. Alcoholism has destroyed many relationships. 4 months of darkness, extreme cold year-round, no trees for thousands of kilometres around a person, and a lack of regular income has created this problem. I don't know if it's getting better or worse.
It's not a very nice lifestyle, but people try to make do. Lots of children grow up in toxic families and try to exit that toxic cycle, some succeeding, and raising much happier children.
If I wanted to visit, what could I do?
First, save money for your flights. Like, really save money.
Here is a compilation of images on how to get to Resolute and Grise Fiord from Ottawa, the capital of Canada, in September (ignore that the times don't match up). Do take note that Iqaluit to Resolute is a longer flight than Ottawa to Iqaluit. Also, all flights to Resolute have to go to Iqaluit first, and all flights to Grise Fiord have to go to Resolute first.
Flying to Resolute? 2,030 CAD (1500 USD). Flying to Grise Fiord? 3,181 CAD (2350 USD)!
Oh...and that was one-way. Double that to get back.
BUT, once you're there. You have some of the world's most remote and unspoilt wilderness at your hands. Both Resolute and Grise Fiord have guides in the tourist industry who can help you. They'll be more than happy to, they don't speak to many people every year.
  1. Wildlife watching. Nowadays, the inhabitants know just where to go to find polar bears and muskox. In the surrounding cold, Arctic waters, belugas, walruses, and seals are common. Likewise...
  2. As previously mentioned, lots of Resolute money comes from American hunters looking to get Arctic wildlife trophies. While the laws on this are ever-changing, if that's your thing, then you can do so legally and responsibly here.
  3. Resolute also has Tupirvik Territorial Park. It contains an ancient seabed filled with fossils from the Devonian Period, and hikes to see the entire Cornwallis Island. The weather here means that ancient camps and fossils are preserved well, as are some Cold War-era plane crashes...
  4. Grise Fiord has some of the most famous Inuit arts and crafts. I mentioned some of this in the above section, but you can visit yourself and see how everything is made and learn the stories behind it!
  5. Much of Ellesmere Island is part of Quttinirpaaq National Park, and Grise Fiord is the only way to access it. On average, only around 20-30 people visit the park/https://tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com/fileb5/57/b557fe95-dc7a-4861-b5a4-60f22a1e9f10/google_trekker_at_tanquary_fiord2e16d0bafill-2000x1126.jpg) every year. The few that do are rewarded with some of the most raw and untouched nature on Earth. This is a geography sub, but this post is more focussed on human geography. There could be a whole other post made about the geological features of the Canadian Arctic. All I can do are show a few photos though, that's not really my expertise.
If you can afford it, it's a great place to be a geologist.
I'm sure there's even more things to do, but I myself don't know very well. The cost is so prohibitive.
Did anybody else live here before the Inuit?
Yes, actually. The Dorset culture has been recorded as having inhabited the region around present-day Resolute. At the time, the Earth was a fair bit warmer, so the climate was likely better back then. The Thule people (ancestors of the Inuit) later replaced the Dorset culture upon arrival from Siberia. They kept camps this far north until the Little Ice Age, which led to the current, more inhospitable conditions and the subsequent migration south. They also had numerous interactions with Vikings, seemingly peaceful. The Vikings also abandoned their colonies in Greenland due to the cooling Earth temperatures.
Fun Greenland fact - There's a piece of Internet knowledge passed around that I've never been able to figure out if it's true or not. It's claimed that the Inuit in some towns of Greenland became completely disconnected from the outside world during the Little Ice Age, and forgot how to build boats. Trapped by the ice sheet on all sides, they believed they were the only people in the world because of this.
Thank you for reading this. I hope that it interests many people, and that Nunavummiut or Canadian Arctic scholars can correct anything in the comments!
As a final fun fact which I couldn't figure out where else to put, Florin Fodor is a Romanian man who has attempted to illegally immigrate to Canada through Grise Fiord. After being deported from the country twice, he went to Greenland and purchased a boat. Eight days later, he arrived in Grise Fiord, hungry and almost out of fuel. For those wondering, he was indeed deported again.

2023.08.01 11:04 Nouble01 Would you like to discuss the power generation and heat generation rate of solar panels?

Thank you for taking a look.

Do you really think that switching to solar panels will benefit the planet? If all energy demand were to be decarbonized and covered by solar panels, I would like everyone to think about it after calculating and showing the effect on the environment.
First of all, sunlight can only be obtained during the daytime, but electricity is needed even outside the daytime, so a storage battery is required. In addition, regardless of what the target is, in general, it is cheaper to seek economies of scale, but since mega solar power plants cannot be built in urban areas, it is necessary to use a power transmission and distribution system.
Power generation efficiency of popular photovoltaic panels 19% https://www.solarreviews.com/blog/what-are-the-most-efficient-solar-panels
Power transmission and distribution efficiency 95% https://www.nrdc.org/bio/jennifer-chen/lost-transmission-worlds-biggest-machine-needs-update
Lithium-ion battery efficiency 70% to 90% Estimated provisional value 85% https://www.powermag.com/dont-neglect-round-trip-efficiency-and-cost-of-charging-when-considering-levelized-cost-of-storage/
Estimated average number of years 10 years, Aging rate of solar panel 0.5% https://ratedpower.com/blog/solar-panels-degradation/
The energy efficiency of the solar panel obtained from the above. (19%-0.5%×10)×95%×85% ≒11% Amount of solar energy required to obtain 1 kWh 11%: 1 kWh = 100%: χ χ=100%÷11%×1kWh χ≒8.846 kWh 1 kWh of this is used, so if you subtract it, it will be 7.846 kWh. As a result, if you try to cover it with solar panels, you will be warming the atmosphere about 8 times as much as you use.
Well, it's only natural that all human races will continue to achieve a certain standard of living. Let's calculate the amount of atmospheric emissions when the total population is 10 billion based on the per capita energy consumption in California. Estimated annual total energy use in California 2.152PBtu/year https://www.eia.gov/state/print.php?sid=CA
When converted to hourly 2.152 TUt/year ÷ 365.25 ÷ 24 ≒ 245.5 TUtb/h 1Wh≒3.4Btu/h https://tradukka.com/unit/powewatt/btu-th-hou1?hl=en
Therefore, 245.5 TUtb/h ÷ 3.4 ≒ about 72.2 TW/h California population: about 39.24 million https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=california+population+2021&newwindow=1&client=safari&hl=ja-jp&sxsrf=AB5stBgozKY4QySlTevqWdfc7H27NDeIlA%3A1690853556091&ei=tGDIZLiYBdnn1e8P2K-S6A8&oq=california+population&gs_lp=EhNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwIhVjYWxpZm9ybmlhIHBvcHVsYXRpb24qAggFMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgQQABgeMgQQABgeMgQQABgeMgQQABgeMgQQABgeSO-hAlCVjAJYlYw CcAV4AZABAJgBWaABWaoBATG4AQHIAQD4AQH4AQKoAg_CAgoQABhHGNYEGLADwgIHECMY6gIYJ-IDBBgAIEGIBgGQBgo&sclient=mobile- gws-wiz-serp
Therefore, about 72.2 TW/h ÷ 39.24 million people ≒ 1.8 kW/h people About 1.8 kW/h x 10 billion people = 18.4 TW/h
1W/h=860.4cal https://kenkou888.com/category21/cal_wh.html
Therefore, if all are replaced with solar panels 18.4TW/h×860cal≒15.8Pcal/h
The specific heat of the earth is 0.25cal/gK http://epms.es.tohoku.ac.jp/minphys/ohtani/lectures/%E5%9C%B0%E7%90%83%E6%83%91%E6%98%9F%E7%89%A9%E6%80%A7%E5%AD%A6%E3%80%80%E8%A6%81%E7%82%B9%E3%80%802011.pdf
The total mass of the Earth is 5.97 billion tg https://www.universetoday.com/78551/how-much-does-the-earth-weigh/
Therefore, about 1.8P5.97 billion tg÷0.25cal/gK≒0.01°c/h About 0.01°c x 365.25 x 24 hours ≒ 92.9°c per year If we continue to promote the bullshit that has been planted as it is and continue to switch the energy supply source to deoxygenation, we will derive the above results. If we continue to be deceived by the misleading that someone sowed in the name of protecting the earth, we will continue to heat and destroy the earth.
With so much domineering and ignorance from the human race now being exposed to the Earth, the Earth is still struggling to keep the average temperature from rising. The conversion of energy to solar panels continues to hurt the planet so much. Do you really think that hurting the earth to this extent will actually benefit the earth?

2023.06.27 21:01 New_Faithlessness308 Activities/Hobbies in Spokane

I should have titled this as, "Indoor Activities for a Geeky Workaholic, " as while Spokane has a plethora of outdoor related activities galore, they weren't the focus of my list here.
I have been working on a list of adult activities that I could potentially do after work in the evenings, but have been pretty surprised to what is available, and I'm not totally sure if I'm even seeing everything. My original list follows specific criteria that it must be something during the weekday evenings, and with the idea that it could be something I can get into weekly, albeit weekend hours are available for your own research. Intentionally excluded show venues (a la Knitting Factory) as I was focused on a weekly activity rather than a show. I caved.
Looking for any sort of contributions to at least keep this list growing. Please correct me where I'm wrong. Please use this if it's helpful.

"Reservation" such as the Escape Rooms, means they base their hours on active reservations and may not have staff available outside of those times.

Hello there, beautiful soul!
Hope this message finds you well.
This week saw the launch of Fund10 and a very special town hall #131 launch party where we were joined by Tim Harrison IOG’s VP of Community & Ecosystem, whom many of you may know from Cardano 360, and Tamara Haasen, the president of IOG who kicked off the start of Fund10 with an inspiring message.
The Catalyst team provided an overview of the changes with this funding iteration, focusing on the Fund10 Launch Guide, new updates to projectcatalyst.io, and introducing the all-new docs section where everyone can find essential guides, along with other significant changes to the operations of Project Catalyst.
The community's creativity is once more being called upon to answer the challenges raised in the previous funding rounds. The challenge teams gave the community a walkthrough of the different Fund10 Catalyst categories. You can learn more about each of the challenges under the active campaign section of the Catalyst collaboration platform. But for more context, the teams behind the challenges also explained what motivated them to pose the challenges in the first place during the Challenge team section of the Townhall.
What's the latest? Let's dive right in.
Danny

What's new in Fund10?

https://preview.redd.it/thm8tg041u7b1.png?width=998&format=png&auto=webp&s=314420bf54dbb6c4c9aaa7c718c8f4600817fc8a
In Fund10, Catalyst will be rolling out milestones-based funding for all projects following the successful pilot in the previous round, as well as the Catalyst continuous testNET, an open-source environment that the community can deploy, where a running fund can simultaneously test new iterations of Project Catalyst, further improving stability and reducing cooldown times between funds. Over the coming weeks, we will add more detailed information and guides about these features, so watch out for those here. In the meantime, you can read more about these features here.
In addition to these improvements, there are other important changes in Fund10. Firstly, the introduction of three new categories, Catalyst Open, Catalyst Fund Operations, and Catalyst systems improvements. These categories represent the most significant change for Project Catalyst and further enhance the community's ability to chart the course they wish Project Catalyst to take in the future. This means that Project Catalyst would move toward being entirely self-sufficient.
Here is a list of all the Fund10 changes and improvements that both support and enhance the features detailed above:
  • Updates to projectcatalyst.io, including an area for documentation.
  • The evolution of the Community Review stage before voting starts. Introducing new community reviewer levels & incentives.
  • New scripts for flagging community reviews to be moderated by Community Moderators.
  • Implementation of SOM & Proof of Achievement schema + guidance across all challenges.
  • Significant voting app registration process improvements.
  • The addition of a testNET desktop voting tool, a wallet connector, and representative voting.

Fund10 Timeline

A project Catalyst funding round consists of four phases: proposal submission, community review, community voting, and onboarding. We are in the proposal submission phase, where the community has until July 13th to submit a proposal to answer one of the many challenges found here.

How to participate?

So you want to participate in Fund10? But don’t know where to start? Check out the Launch Guide and read the in-depth guide.
There are many ways to get involved with Project Catalyst, and we’d love to see as many members of the Cardano community participate as possible. To get involved in Project Catalyst all you have to do to start is make an account on the collaboration platform.
Once you become a part of the Catalyst community, you can participate in discussions, suggest new challenges, share your opinions, and vote. You can also respond to challenges by building a team and launching a bid.

  • Continued investigation of tally tools and aligned on approach for developing tools to enable community verification of tally in F10.
  • Continued work to merge snapshots from both preprod and mainnet, and aligned on approach for the "check my voting power" UX.

It is great to see community creators offer deep dives into the Catalyst ecosystem. Education is a key element in creating a shared understanding and improving communication. This video has a couple outdated elements (as per recent announcements this week) but it’s an amazing effort and I wished to recognize it accordingly. Thank you for your great work. See the original tweet here or watch the video directly here.

Get in touch

And that's a wrap. Let's talk Catalyst & governance via twitter, or telegram, or reddit, or wherever is your home online and keep conversations engaging on these very important topics.
Enjoy your day ahead!
