Am I better off leaving split type inverter AC on 24/7? Or should I let it rest when able?
2024.05.15 03:11 SkoivanSchiem Am I better off leaving split type inverter AC on 24/7? Or should I let it rest when able?
I live in the Philippines, where the summer heat can reach as high as 38C.
Last week, we had a 2.5hp split-type inverter AC installed in our bedroom. When me and my wife are working from home, we're practically in the room for almost the whole day. So far we've been running the AC 24/7 at around 25-27C.
My question generally revolves around the following thought: Do split-type inverter ACs need to "rest" or be turned off? In my specific use case, will this increase the AC's longevity or save on electricity in the long run?
The reason I ask is because I've heard that the most work that an ACs compressor does is when starting up and adjusting to reach the set temperature, which I interpret as costing more energy and works the ACs components more than when the AC is just "coasting" or maintaining the set temperature.
As mentioned above, we use the AC 24/7. If the alternative would be to turn in on at 8pm in preparation for bedtime, turn it off at 8am while it's not too hot out, turn it on again around 12nn-4pm when it's the hottest time of the day, then repeat that daily --- would that be a better alternative or should we just continue using it 24/7? Just turn it off when we would be out of the house for a long time?

Emmon Flowers:
Born just a year prior to the Conquest, Emmon is the product of his father (also named Emmon), who was the sickly heir to Holyhall at the time, and Septa Ynys, who had arrived with Lord Willem (Emmon Graceford’s father)’s second wife, Rhea Merryweather, as an attendant. Septa Ynys gave birth to Emmon Flowers after his father’s death from disease. Emmon Sr. had been aware of his child’s coming, and was hoping to live long enough to meet the child he never believed he would have – though that wouldn’t be the case.
Septa Ynys was called back to do penance for the sin of Emmon Flowers, and Emmon himself was taken to be raised by septons so that he might also do penance for the sin of existing – by becoming a septon himself. Lord Willem, who outlived his son and was hoping to have more children by his second wife, was glad of the disposal of an inconvenient bastard – the resemblance of the infant to his father at that age was more hurtful than gratifying.
Emmon learned music and scholarship (religious and otherwise) with the septons, but was known for being a bit too inquisitive and curious for his own good, despite being otherwise pliant and eager to please. Brief talk was made of sending him to the Maesters, but the Faith believed that Emmon was what was owed to them – after all, he had been born of the Faith.
When he was sixteen, Emmon finally retaliated against another bullying novice – landing one punch on the other boy. Unfortunately, the other boy was slightly more martial, and Emmon came out the worse of the two in the fight. Something about this particular incident, however, convinced the septons that Emmon was more trouble than he was worth – perhaps it was the straw that broke the stallion’s back, amongst all the inconvenient questions Emmon would raise. Either way, Emmon was sent back to Holyhall.
Lord Willem was still alive at the time, but by then had only had a daughter, Jocelyn, by his second wife, the Lady Rhea. He took in Emmon purely to avoid the scandal that would have arisen by having the bastard of Holyhall out on the street, and gave him no other kindness but this.
Emmon spent his time playing music as the resident musician at Holyhall, which gave him at least some purpose, and assisted the Maester with the tending of ravens.
When Emmon was twenty, Lord Willem died suddenly – and the only child that remained was Jocelyn, who had always been kind to Emmon, but who had a talent for intrigue that frightened Emmon to an extent. He saw it coming that he would become part of her machinations, but had no real way of stopping it. At least he would be able to continue his music and studies. At least there would be that.
Timeline
1 BC – Emmon Flowers is born, Emmon Graceford dies. Septa Ynys is sent away to do penance, Emmon is given to septons.
15 AC – Emmon sent in disgrace back to Holyhall
20 AC – Death of Lord Willem Graceford. Ascension of Jocelyn Graceford, Lady of Holyhall
23 AC – Emmon sent to King’s Landing to serve as a singer and the eyes and ears of his aunt
Jocelyn Graceford
Jocelyn was born to the second wife of Willem Graceford and was the only child of this marriage to survive to adulthood – though that very nearly didn’t happen. Jocelyn was badly disfigured by a hunting dog when she was seven years old, and despite treatments by a maester, was ultimately disfigured. Thankfully, she had been able to keep her eyes and tongue. After this, her father abandoned his hopes of arranging a suitable betrothal for her.
Lord Willem had hoped to have a son and heir by his new wife to replace his deceased first heir, but unfortunately, only Jocelyn survived. Rhea Merryweather tried to give her husband a new son and heir, but her multiple pregnancies after Jocelyn only resulted in stillbirths or children who, to the despair of their parents, died in the cradle days after birth.
After his wife finally expired in childbed when Jocelyn was nineteen, Willem was quickly making plans to take a new wife, only to die suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving Jocelyn the Lady of Holyhall.
There are rumors Jocelyn poisoned her father, to prevent him from creating a new heir and sending her to the silent sisters. She denies these rumors.
Because of her disfigurement, Jocelyn tends to not leave Holyhall unless there is great cause for it, or if she cares for those she visits, such as family at Longtable. She wears a long dark veil over her face, to hide the bulk of the damage, and even at Holyhall, only her Maester has seen underneath the veil.
Jocelyn, despite her isolation and lack of marriage prospects, however, is interested in keeping informed, even from her seat in the Reach, and has utilized her nephew to this end.
1 AC – Conquest. Also, Jocelyn was born.
8 AC – The Hound Incident
20 AC – Death of Jocelyn’s mother, Rhea Merryweather. Later in the year, the death of Willem Graceford, Lord of Holyhall.
23 AC – Sent Emmon to King’s Landing.

2024.05.14 23:55 Hurts-Dont-It- Knock Sensors
I have tried every sensor under the sun gm ,ac delco, Delphi, ext. I read somewhere that the duralast knock sensors work and no shit they do. I waited to post about it I wanted to give them time and it's been about a year and no issues or codes have came back. I did use the gasket maker to put a horseshoe around the foward side of the holes left the bottom open and removed the rear foam on the intake manifold. Mine like most had water in the knock sensor holes so what I did was use a shop vac to get the water out pull the sensor and valley pan than use a combo of a heat gun and q tips till it was bone dry. I bought a engine brush kit which has like wire brushes that go into a impact and gave the holes a good brushing and hit it with the shop vac again and put the duralast sensors in. I used a gm or ac delco harness can't remember exactly.

2024.05.14 23:40 HugeLag Starter Motor Rattling Sound
A bit of a long post but I really appreciate if someone can read it all and offer some advice.
I have a Silverado 2011 1500 LT 5.3Ltr Z71 truck. My truck has been making 2 sounds. The first is when I change the gear into P, R,D,N,M I hear a sort or slapping sound/clunk? The second sound I hear is at 30-60mph it's a sound coming from the left side of the truck kind of a crunch.
So I took it too a mechanic who previously fixed my dad's mercedes really well, and we were happy he would be able to address the silverado concerns.
He advised on changing the following:-
Gear mounting Spark plug 45*8 urgent Belt+ pully Filter ac Cabin Air filters Gear oil urgent Gasket gear Filter gear Rear seal gear Break Pad front and rear Converter repair Axcel repair Transfer case oil X2 shudder fix lube Labor Charge
All Original AC Delco Parts for Chevy
Total USD: 2200
Initially I was happy that he would be addressing the severe transmission leaks I was having and bad seals. He did assure me that doing all the above would fix sounds 1 and sounds 2 as stated above. He also sent me the invoices of parts all original AC Delco, and videos as well as proof of him changing it all.
However,
After the mechanic put everything together I noticed a horrible rattling sound which lasts 1-3 seconds upon start up. This was when he told me job was done.
After some heavy digging on the internet I came to find that it's a starter motor issue. He also told me that it was a starter motor issue.
Judging by the fact that my transmission was dropped down and opened since they needed to repair the torque and all these seals etc... I'm conflicted whether they didn't install the flywheel correctly and it's misaligned with the starter. Or the starter motor just needs to be replaced.
I am really hoping the starter motor just needs to be replaced as I don't want to pay more labor charges to have the flywheel properly aligned or replaced all together as that would mean they need to drop the trans again and open it up. I have told the mechanic I won't be paying until they fix this issue Inwas quite upset.
The mechanic stated himself it's a starter motor issue. What do you guys think?
I feel like paying for all the work he did has probably saved the life of my transmission, but at the cost of a new sound arising. I live in a part of the world where English isn't the first language so there's a communication issue as well.

Hey Folks, Looking for advice. I'm about to jump into my first time being DM for a full campaign. We are playing Tyranny of dragons and I'm super excited. I've been DM for plenty of one shots and I've played in multiple campaigns so i know the rules pretty well and I'm relatively well versed as a player. Our forever Dm deserves a break and i stepped up to the plate looking forward to. However, immediately i need some help.
One of my players wants to be infected with Lycanthropy, specifically were-bear lycanthropy which would give them the following traits
Lycan Resistance. You gain immunity to bludgeoning, piecing and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks that aren't silvered
- Shapechanger. You can use your action to polymorph into a Large bear-humanoid hybrid or into a Large bear, or back into your true form. Your statistics, other than your size and AC, are the same in each form. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying isn't transformed. Your movement speed in Bear or Hybrid form is 40 ft., and you gain a 30 ft. climbing speed. You revert to your true form if you die.
- Keen Smell. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
- Moonlit Strength. You gain a Strength of 19, if your strength isn't already higher, and a ~+1~ bonus to AC while in bear or hybrid form (from natural armor). Attack and damage rolls for your natural weapons are based on Strength.
- Natural Weapons. You gain two natural weapons which can only be used in your Bear or Hybrid form; a Bite and Claw attack. Your bite attack deals ~2d10~ piercing damage, and on a hit if the target is humanoid must succeed a Constitution saving throw (DC= 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier) or gain werebear lycanthropy. Your claw attack deals ~2d8~ slashing damage.
- Multiattack. You can make two claw attack
This seems kind of busted to me, especially at level 1 on a full caster. I am however a yes and kind of guy (In this case more so of a No but)
I'm looking for suggestions on how i can 1. Keep the theme of the werebear alive and 2. Keep it balanced so the rest of the party doesn't feel completely outshined.
what I'm not looking for is suggestions that just say :Don't do this.
mostly what I'm looking for is suggestions for alternatives that are balanced mechaically or Rp wise so that when i tell the player i don't think this will work i have some other options to present.
cheers. and thanks for your help!

2024.05.14 22:37 __zagat__ Alternative Energy Providers
A few months ago, my town sent me a letter saying that we could get our energy through an alternative energy supplier, MC squared. It was opt-out. We had to send in a letter to opt-out. I didn't opt-out.
So now I am with MC Squared and this month, my energy bill is pretty high considering we haven't used the AC. Did some research and found out that MC Squared prices will always be the same as ComEd's.
So I call them and said I want to cancel. And the guy is like okay you will be put back on ComEd. Then I ask him: what is the point of this company? If their prices are the same as ComEd's, why am I (or anyone) with them instead of ComEd? He says that MC Squared gave my town $10,000 and the town agreed to put us all on MC Squared (unless we opted out). Which...didn't answer my question at all. I am trying to understand what function this company serves. Why they exist.
I mean it sounds like the town got a kickback for putting their residents on MCS, and they buy energy at a discount and sell it to residents, so there is no benefit to the resident for going with MCS.
Thanks!

Long story long: We have had a guy do some plumbing work in both our commercial and residential spaces, and HVAC work in our commercial space - originally from a referral by a friend. The guy has a business name appropriately HVAC/Mechanical, an LLC, and has done good work at reasonable prices, and communicated well historically. We had a heat wave in maybe February and the AC in the commercial space didn't cool. He was scheduled for a Spring maintenance anyway, so he checked it out. There was a considerable repair needed, and the incumbent system was approximately 20 years old. The repair was going to be close to $2k including labor, so we began to discuss replacement as an alternative. He gave me a price in the $9k range for 2.5ton heatpump. This is a 3-story building, so a chunk of that was a crane fee. I spoke with another property owner in the building and we negotiated to coordinate the same HVAC guy installing two new units and splitting the $2k crane fee. I specifically asked the HVAC guy if he could handle a job this big, and he assured me that he had done hundreds of these. He requested payment in full and said he could usually do the installation 2-3 days after payment. We both paid him 3/21, and he scheduled the installation the following week. You can tell where this is going - he's still not done - we're into the 80's weather-wise, and have had to refund rental fees to our tenant because no AC and this is a foid-prep space that needs temperature control. His communications have become poor to unresponsive. I know now, that I never should have paid him in-full in advance. I trusted him. Along the way he has had excuse after excuse: crane availability issues, injuries resulting in not being cleared to work, etc. Now - the equipment is all installed and working in the other guy's place but not ours. He says our unit has a bad defrost zone board. On a brand new Goodman unit. Sure.... Unfortunately, I have finally lost all confidence in his words. I now feel as though he has been lying to me all along, and I don't trust him anymore.
I have called another local HVAC company that does our residence and asked them to provide an assessment after this repair is completed and the system is working. They looked up the unit by serial number, and confirmed that they can provide warranty repair, but they say that the unit has a 5- year warranty and the original guy said 10-years. They also said there's no permit pulled on the job, and that it is required in this jurisdiction.
So - where do I go from here? Am I liable for a code violation as the property owner? What do the esteemed members of the HVAC community recommend I do?
I'm totally willing to lose his 1-year labor warranty, but is the equipment under a 5-year or a 10-year warranty?

2024.05.14 21:11 DesolateEden Can't seem to get AC to work. Is anyone able to figure out my issue?
Here is my setup: Enclosed room which draws in cool mars air via an active vent from the outside (turns off in the day) The room is kept cold at about -10c at all times. A cooling loop is built throughout the room using medium radiators, it runs through the AC unit (which doesn't seem to cool it) and then a volume pump and a pressure regulator is used via logic to pump the coolant into the gas generator room next door via 3 passive vents, once the pressure in the room reaches about 35, activate vent sucks any excess pressure back out of the gas gen room and back into the cooling loop to cool the air and feed it back into the room later. The very moment I turn the gas gen on, the temps rise to 50 in a matter of seconds (My gen fuel pipe pressure regulator is set to only send through 0.1 of the gas and even at that, the room gets too hot. The coolant in the loop is at -10 stable, it enters the AC unit at -10 and leaves at -10c, nothing changes. The waste pipe runs into the ceiling passive vent and dumps the waste into the atmosphere. Looking at the green screen on the AC unit, it says: Operational temperature efficiency 100% Temperature differential efficiency - 81% Pressure efficiency - 0% Edit: I connected the waste pipe to the left side of the loop, in the output side, and now all 3 of the conditions on the green screen show as 100%, but the cooling isn't really happening still. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? Thanks! Edit: I attached a diagram of my setup to get a better idea of it Last edit: A question... Could I connect the AC unit to the top part of the loop for output and the back for the input and run the waste pipe through the radiator loop and have it work that way? (Even if the main AC loop, that is, the input and output is interrupted in the gas gen room with a gap.) https://preview.redd.it/wqmy3rybdg0d1.jpg?width=1874&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e64b1546d9af00005232f2188eeeae27265c1f8c https://preview.redd.it/or59rhlexf0d1.png?width=2458&format=png&auto=webp&s=fecf6e51884589a21593ab158046adfb6aa8d581 https://preview.redd.it/rc9adbtfxf0d1.png?width=2477&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8cf35159624a0cc878c3afc63228c0139acbaf4 https://preview.redd.it/tvjqv52gxf0d1.png?width=2501&format=png&auto=webp&s=a3afa8d79496c2e3e9fae93f1818d533f2e969d0 submitted by DesolateEden to Stationeers [link] [comments]
2024.05.14 21:03 Afraid_Background321 Navigating Diabetes Management: Insights from Personal Experiences with Insulin Pumps and Skin Reactions
Managing diabetes goes beyond monitoring blood sugar levels; it encompasses handling the various tools we use, such as insulin pumps and different insulin formulations. Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges, especially with skin reactions to different insulin types and pump cannulas. I hope sharing my experiences will help others facing similar issues make informed decisions.
Understanding Skin Reactions Skin reactions in insulin therapy can stem from multiple sources and often develop progressively with more exposure:
- Adhesives: Adhesives are a common cause of skin reactions, characterized by redness, itchiness, and sometimes pain over the entire area where the adhesive was applied. Reactions can intensify and occur more rapidly with repeated exposure. These can be easily overcome by underpatches or completely removing the adhesive and replacing it with hypafix glued with hotglue.
- Cannula Material: Individual reactions to cannula materials vary. 'Plastic' cannulas (made from teflon) initially worked for me for about five years before they started causing reactions, prompting me to switch to steel cannulas. Cannula skin reactions are subtler than adhesive reactions, usually presenting as redness and bumps at the cannula site with intense itching.
- Insulin Formulations: Distinguishing an allergy to a cannula from an allergy to an insulin component can be difficult as both present similarly (itchiness and redness around the insertion site). In my experience, ingredients in insulin, particularly m-cresol, have triggered skin reactions. For example, both Humalog and Apidra contain higher levels of m-cresol and caused significant issues for me.
Differentiating Between Cannula and Insulin Reactions One way to differentiate between an insulin skin reaction and a cannula skin reaction is to switch from a teflon cannula to a steel cannula. Unfortunately, with devices like the Omnipod, you cannot use a steel cannula. Instead, have your healthcare professional fill the pod with saline instead of insulin and wear it for 2-3 days to see how your skin reacts. If there's no reaction to the saline, it's likely the insulin causing the issue.
Investigating Skin Reactions: My Personal Journey It's crucial to be vigilant when interpreting changes in symptoms, as improvement with a steel cannula may not necessarily indicate resolution of the issue. In my case, switching to steel cannulas initially appeared to resolve the problem. However, after about two years of use, I began experiencing local absorption site problems despite careful rotation of injection sites. To address this, I experimented with inserting the steel cannula more superficially by bending the Tandem trusteel needle at about a 45-degree angle. While this improved absorption, it also led to a recurrence of skin reactions. This led me to conclude that the teflon cannulas were not the primary cause of the reactions, but rather the insulin itself. Infusing the insulin more superficially, whether with a teflon or bent steel cannula, allowed me to observe the skin reactions more clearly, while deeper infusion masked them.
This hypothesis was confirmed when I conducted the saline test with Omnipod and experienced no skin reaction, indicating that the issue likely stemmed from the insulin rather than the cannula material.
The Role of M-Cresol Research indicates that m-cresol in insulin formulations can cause skin reactions. Insulins with higher concentrations of m-cresol, like Humalog and Apidra, are associated with more inflammation. Studies suggest that removing m-cresol can lessen these reactions.
Detailed M-Cresol Concentrations in Insulin Formulations:
- Fiasp and NovoRapid: 1.72 mg/ml
- Humalog: 3.15 mg/ml
- Apidra: Approximately 2.8 mg/ml
- Lyumjev: Same as Humalog, 3.15 mg/ml
- Biosimilars: Like Admelog and Trurapi, mirror the m-cresol content of their originals, providing no benefit for those with sensitivities.
My Personal Journey with Insulin Pumps - Initial Experience: I used a Tandem teflon cannula for about five years before developing skin reactions.
- Switch to Steel Cannulas: After switching to steel cannulas, I thought the problem was resolved. However, about two years later, I began developing problems with local absorption sites. This was exacerbated when I bent the Tandem trusteel needle to direct insulin more superficially, improving absorption but leading to renewed skin reactions. This prompted me to conclude that it might not have been the teflon causing the initial reactions but the insulin when infused more superficially.
- Saline Test with Omnipod: Conducting a saline test in the Omnipod confirmed no skin reaction, which reassured me that the teflon cannulas were not the issue.
- Experimenting with Insulin Types: I tried Humalog (Ademlog) insulin with an Omnipod, but after just 2 days, I immediately started experiencing local skin reactions, despite using FloNase before applying the pod.
- Switching Insulin Formulations: We then decided to switch to another insulin with less m-cresol, Fiasp. It worked wonderfully for about 2 weeks, but I then developed insulin resistance, a phenomenon described by many people after some time using Fiasp. Fiasp is the same insulin as NovoRapid, but it contains vitamin B3, which is used to facilitate faster absorption. Some people hypothesize that this vitamin may increase insulin resistance over the long term. Despite trying various strategies to mitigate this, such as combining Fiasp with other insulins or alternating between Fiasp and other insulins, I still experienced resistance and skin reactions.
- Transition to NovoRapid: I have now started using NovoRapid, which contains less m-cresol than Humalog, and everything seems to be going fine for now.
Skin reactions can be mentally taxing and complex. The best approach is to methodically test different cannulas (teflon/steel), different perfusions (insulin/saline), and different insulin types until you find the right combination. Research on removing m-cresol from insulin formulations has shown promising results in animal studies, offering hope for less inflammatory and equally effective insulin therapies in the future (
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsptsci.1c00047).
Also, if you keep having skin reactions even with insulin containing less m cresol, know that some physician were able to desentitize a children to this component so he could use insulin in insulin pumps

However, I was wondering if you guys knows if there is an option to manage the hardware monitor on the LCD outside Armory Crate. If I do have to install that ASUS AC tool well, I will install it just for the data temps but, if there is another tool I can use to avoid AC I would love to try it.

I'm new to skyrim and modding in general but I read on load order is important that the game runs properly but I have no idea what or how to exactly sort it properly. Could anybody give a general guideline to follow. Currently whenever i encounter any problems i either do: a) Skip the mod entirely after searching the mods and found it might be too complex to follow b) Reinstall Skyrim and hope for the best c) Enable and disable mods to find out which is working or not working
Here's my plugin modlist if it helps

2024.05.14 18:04 RepresentativeFull51 Has anyone been able to conquer this A/C system?
I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 and I am just wondering has anyone been able to completely fix/upgrade this A/C system to where it completely works consistently?
I and many others have replaced nearly the entire A/C system from pressure switches, evaporators, compressors, blower motor modules, the burnt blower motor connector, etc. And it still will give out.
Does anyone have any advice to fix it where it doesn't have issues any more? I heard the reason the blower motor connector burns out is cause chevy cheaped out and used plastic or something. Can I upgrade the wire to where it doesn't get as hot since the blower motor pulls so much.
The current problems I am having is my blower motor only works sometimes and if it does It works on setting 3-5 only but most of the time only on setting 3. I have replaced the blower motor connector, blower motor resistor (3 times lol), and the blower motor itself
Whenever the fan is working the AC sounds like its trying to compress air but the compressor clutch went out im pretty sure which is frustrating cause I fixed that only a little over a year ago with an Autozone AC system that came with all of the parts. Luckily Autozone gives lifetime warranty on some of their stuff but still. Is there parts that I can use that are more reliable that aren't also so expensive? Or is it better to just save up and get the AC Delco system based on reliability?
TL:DR - are there ways I can upgrade my A/C system so I don't have to keep fixing it?
TIA!

2024.05.14 17:56 DANJCOLEMAN1991 Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.1: Masafumi Gotoh (2024 version)
Introduction
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Zepp Tokyo for \"Quarter-Century Tour\" ^(\This article is an updated version of my "Sound Like" article from 2021. I have reposted this article due to difficulties editing the original version*, and have included additional information and recommendations based on the increased popularity of amp simulator pedals*)*
Hello fellow musicians and Ajikan fans!
I have been a fan of ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION for roughly 16 years and as a guitarist was greatly inspired by the band's alt rock sound.
After a few years of research I have written a series of "sound like" articles for ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. The purpose of these articles is to provide context on how the band create their signature sound, and to support beginning musicians or tribute acts who may wish to replicate it.
At the end of each article I have drafted a Budget Rig, which you could use for both at home and in a live environment. I have also provided some general amp settings to tweak and try, which are based on the band's live sound and be can used to help replicate their tones.
This is a 3-part series and if you enjoy this article I would recommend checking out the other articles:
Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.2: Kensuke Kita (2024 version) : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com) ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 3: Yamada : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com) Please note that the article focuses on the band's live sound, which will be different to the albums and can vary depending on the venue. Also (and is a cliché every musician and instrument will have small differences, so bear that in mind!)
To help you recognise the individual guitar tones, Gotch's guitar parts are normally panned to the left earphone and Kita's are panned to the right earphone on the band's albums. (On 2016's
Sol-Fa, Hometown and some of the
Planet Folks singles the panning was swapped, with Gotch instead in the right ear and Kita on the left)
Masafumi Gotoh
Gotch live at the 02 Islington, London, 2013 Let's start off with lead singer and rhythm guitarist
Masafumi Gotoh, or "
Gotch" for short. Gotch's was massively influenced by the 90's alternative rock, Power Pop and the Britpop scene, and has previously highlighted Oasis, Weezer and Number Girl as key inspirations.
As Ajikan's main songwriter, Gotch follows the principle of "less is more" - keeping the arrangements simple for listeners, but combining pop hooks & traditional Asian melodies with the band's punk rock and indie influences.
Gotch's playing style follows this principle, as he primarily uses chord shapes, bar chords or repeated phrases to anchor the band. (The simple approach also makes it easier for Gotch to sing while performing)
Occasionally, Gotch will use "octave chords" (more on octave chords below) or play riffs with open strings notes, to add further depth. A good example of this is the opening riffs to
Easter, where he plays an open D string while also playing the 3rd and 5th fret of the A string.
Octave Chords: Octave chords is famously used in punk rock and alt rock riffs, and is when you play the same note in two different octaves. Try play a bar chord on the 4th fret of the A string, and lifting your ring finger off the D string. You should get a "C# octave chord" and will recognise it from the intro of Haruka Kanata. Octave chords are used in many Ajikan songs and by many bands, so they are good to practice!
In more recent albums, Gotch has also experimented with moving chord shapes across the fretboard. For good examples, check out the opening of
Caterpillar or the bridge section of
Kouya Wo Aruke.
Gotch's guitar tends to be lower in the overall mix, with Kita acting as the band's lead guitarist and Gotch as the anchor for each song. However, Gotch tends to improvise with ambient sounds during live performances and occasionally will take on the lead role in songs like
Hold Me Tight.
GUITARS:
When it comes to guitars Gotch almost exclusively plays Gibson Les Paul Jr's with P-90 pickups, and has been his preferred guitar since 2004. The P-90 pickups have a bright midrange sound in comparison to the muddier humbucker sound, which makes them better suited for Gotch's focus on chords.
Gotch main guitar is the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special The Les Paul Jr is also lighter and have less sustain and power compared to a normal Les Paul, which leaves space for the other instruments to stand out in the mix.
Gotch's main guitar is a
1959 Gibson Les Paul Special, which he plays in E Standard tuning and uses for both recording and live performances. Gotch also uses a
1961 Gibson Les Paul Jr (with the pickguard missing) or a
2000 Gibson Les Paul DC (with a gloss yellow finish) for songs in Eb/D# tuning, such as
After Dark or
Soredewa, Mata Ashita.
Gotch's is also famous for using a
1975 Gibson Marauder during the band's early years. Gotch has mostly retired the guitar (due to the "lack of volume" for larger venues), but it regularly appears in MV's, band merchandise and occasionally during special events, such as the 10th anniversary shows in Yokohama.
Gotch's Gibson Marauder Gotch occasionally uses a few rarer guitars live, such as the
Gibson Custom Les Paul Junior John Lennon model (Gotch has number 54 of 300 such guitars made), and is normally played with a capo for songs such as
Maigo Inu To Ame No Beat.
Gotch has also used a
Gibson Hummingbird for acoustic numbers, and can be seen used in Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 for the band's performance of
Kaigan Doori. Gotch likes to use Tortex Flex .88mm & Tortex Flex Triangle .88mm guitar picks, which he swaps between depending on the song.
If you are looking to sound like Gotch,
the best place to start would be a Les Paul Jr guitar with P-90 pickups. AMPLIFIERS:
After originally touring with a Roland JC-22, Gotch has almost exclusively played Fender amplifiers since 2004. Gotch uses two amps when playing live, one for his "clean" sound and the other for his "heavy" sound.
The band's often implement a "quiet/loud" dynamic into their song writing, so Gotch will often switch between his amps during live performances, using a custom made footswitch on his pedalboard. (A good example of this is
Mustang or
Solanin)
For his clean tone, Gotch uses a
Fender 65' Twin Custom Twin 15. It can be heard on
Korogaru Iwa, Kimi ni Asa Ga Furu, Solanin and
Wonder Future. Occasionally, Gotch will combine the Twin Reverb with a boost pedal or overdrive pedal for more clarity, with Wonder Future a good examples of this.
(1) Fender '65 Twin Custom 15 (clean tone), (2) Fender Vibro-King Custom, (3) Fender Super-Sonic 60 Head (which uses the Vibro-King as a speaker), (4) Fender '63 Spring Reverb (which runs in between the pedal board and the Super-Sonic 60, and is toggled on or off by a switch) For his heavier tone, Gotch primarily uses a
Fender Vibro-King Custom for recording and appears in most of the band's MV's. The Vibro-King/Twin Reverb was Gotch's main setup during the 2000's and can be seen together on
Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6.
In 2009 Gotch started to use a
Fender Super-Sonic 60 Amp Head and still uses it now. Until 2022, Gotch would use Vibro-King as a "cabinet", acting as the speaker unit for the Super-Sonic. Gotch now uses a
Shinos & L Rocket Head for live shows, but has kept the Vibro-king for recording sessions and MVs.
Since 2022 Gotch has used Shinos & L Rocket amp & cabinet instead of the Fender Vibro-King Gotch "heavy" amps for songs such as
Re:Re:, Haruka Kanata and
Rewrite. It is important to note that Gotch prefers to use his amps to create his distorted tone, but will occasionally add an overdrive pedal for heavier tracks such as
Blood Circulator &
Easter.
Alongside the Twin Reverb and Super-Sonic, Gotch is known to use a
Fender 63' Spring Reverb Unit. This unit only runs into the Super-Sonic and is used for additional reverb to "thicken the sound". Gotch can control the 63' Reverb with a on/off switch on his pedal board.
Other notable amps that Gotch has used are the
Matchless C30 & Bad Cat 30R Head. Both have been used exclusively for recording, most notably on Wonder Future. Gotch is also known to use VOX AC15 amps for recording.
Gotch's '63 Spring Reverb Unit, along with a selection of Vortex Flex .88m picks In terms of mics, Gotch seems to use a Shure SM57 for his Fender Twin Reverb and a Shure SM58 on his Vibro-King or Shinos Rocket. When you are trying to emulate his sound with modelling or profiling amps, it is worth experimenting with mic positioning and different mics.
If you want to replicate Gotch's amp sound then you should look to replicate his Fender amps. However the Vibro-King is a key component and are unfortunately rare, notoriously loud and expensive. For that reason, I have put together some alternatives that should get you close.
PEDALS & EFFECTS:
During Ajikan's early years, Gotch combined a Roland JC-22 with a ProCo RAT to create the "quiet/loud" dynamic of the band's early records. After buying the Fender Vibro-King in 2004, Gotch no longer required the RAT, but kept a simplified pedalboard to achieve certain tones for live performances.
Gotch's 2004 pedalboard, which includes the ProCo RAT and Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer We will cover two different pedalboards that Gotch has used during the band's career. Regardless of which pedal board you look at,
Gotch's has always included an overdrive or boost pedal, a phase pedal and a delay pedal. The boost/overdrive is used to "lift" his clean sound during ballads (
Solanin, Wonder Future) or to thicken his sound for heavier tracks. (
Senseless, Dororo) Gotch will normally set the drive or gain low and the volume high.
The phaser is a more sparingly used pedal to add texture and colour, but can be heard on
Shinkokyū, Blue Train and
Rewrite. I will include more detail on Gotch's use of delay in the sections below.
Gotch's "Classic" Pedalboard Gotch \"classic\" pedalboard, used between 2006-2013, with Gotch's custom made footswitch on the bottom left to control the amps Gotch started to use this "classic" board during the Fanclub tour and continued to do so until the 10th Anniversary shows in 2013. This would be the easier and more affordable board to replicate for newcomers.
Gotch's setup started with a
BOSS TU-3 tuner, which he also used as a "mute" pedal in between songs. From there, his chain would run into the
Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer, the
BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser and the
BOSS DD-20 Giga Delay. During the Magic Disk tour, Gotch also added a
Custom Audio Tremolo.
The BOSS DD-20 *has been Gotch's main delay pedal for twenty years and is set to "warp". On the warp setting, Gotch can keep his foot on the pedal to create swells of delays. Gotch's standard setting is 173-179bpm (beats per minute on 1/4 notes and then he has 4 presets. These are 137bpm on 1/4 (for) Blackout, 154bpm on 1/4 (for) Kakato de Ai o Uchinarase, 177 on 1/2 (for) Solanin and the intro of Siren and 177bpm on 1/4 (for the 2nd half of) Siren)
Gotch also included two footswitches for his board; The first one was a handmade footswitch, which he used to swap between the Twin Reverb and the Vibro-King/Super-Sonic. The other footswitch was a BOSS FS-5L, which he used to control the '63 Spring Reverb Unit.
Gotch's "Modern" Pedalboard Gotch's \"modern\" pedal board.【Pedal List】(1) api/TranZformer GT (compressoequalizer) (2) BOSS/TU-3 (tuner) (3) Spaceman Effects/Atlas III (preamp) (4) BOSS/DD-6 (delay) (5) Spaceman Effects/Voyager I (tremolo) (6) EarthQuaker Devices/Avalanche Run (delay/reverb) (7) Mu-Tron/Mu-FX Phasor 2X (phaser) (8) Caroline Guitar Company/KILOBYTE (9) BOSS/DD-20 (delay) (10) Handmade/Line Selector (11) FAT/514.D (booster)(12) strymon/Zuma R300 (power supply) (13)BOSS/EV-30 (Expression Pedal) (14) BOSS/FS-5L (foot switch) During the recording of Wonder Future and his first solo album (
Can't Be Forever Young), Gotch began to experiment more with boutique pedals, and has resulted in a more complex board since 2014, allowing more ambient experiments on the band's records and during live performances.
Gotch has added a
API Tranzformer GT to the start of his chain, only using the E.Q. section and tweaking the settings for each venue.
Gotch's "Modern" board now includes a variety of delay and reverb pedals, such as the
Earthquaker Device Avalanche Run and the
Caroline Kilobyte Lo-Fi Delay. These are combined with his DD-20 to create the ambient sounds heard on
Empathy & the outro of
Demachiyanagi Parallel Universe.
The
BOSS DD-6 Digital Delay is set to the "reverse" mode and is used during the intro of
Re:Re: and the bridge of
Rewrite. Gotch has removed the Tube-Screamer from his board and has experimented with multiple alternative pedals, which includes the
Xotic Effects AC Plus and
JHS Superbolt.
He currently uses the
Atlas III Preamp Booster and the
FAT 514.D for his overdrive sounds. The 514.D only runs to the Super-Sonic to help "thicken" the distorted tone of the Super-Sonic.
Gotch has also replaced the Super Phaser with the
MU-FX Phasor 2x and is using a
Voyager I Spaceman for his tremolo. (UCLA & No Name are good references for the tremolo) Finally, Gotch has added an
BOSS EV-30 expression pedal, which he uses to control the delay of the Avalanche Run.
If you are looking to replicate Gotch's pedalboard,
the best place to start would be a phaser, delay and a boost/overdrive pedal, which would cover most of Ajikan's Discography.
Sound Like Gotch...On a Budget
Now that you are up to speed on what Gotch uses for his guitar rig, we can start to look at replicating his sound. The idea of this section is to offer affordable suggestions to replicate Gotch's tone that can be used for home use and for small live venues.
I would like to highlight that I am just writing as a fan and the equipment I recommend are purely my own recommendations. I do not have any sponsors (I wish I did sometimes) and if you find alternatives that work for you, go for it!
Gotch performing in 2022, during the Quarter Century shows in Yokohama To buy Gotch's current pedal board alone would cost roughly £2,500 and would be unrealistic for most readers to purchase, however there are options that can get us close to Gotch's tone without breaking the bank.
The key elements to this rig are: - A Gibson style guitar with P-90 pickups
- A Fender amp with decent distortion
- A Tube-Screamer style overdrive
- A flexible Delay pedal
Let's start with the guitar, which is both important for the P-90 tone. You should always feel comfortable when playing the guitar you pick, so I recommend trying out the guitar when possible before buying.
GUITARS As an affordable guitar, I would suggest looking at the
Epiphone Les Paul Jr. It is the entry level price for Gibson guitars (Epiphone would be the equivalent to "Squier" for Fender) and includes P-90 pickups as the standard setup. You can buy one for around £380 and should also be fairly easy to modify & similar to Gotch's sound.
Epiphone Les Paul Junior If you do have a higher budget to work with, I would recommend the
Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC. These were released in 2019 and you can normally find a 2nd hand version for roughly £650 - £800. (It is also the guitar I currently use!) Failing that, you can also look at the
Gibson Les Paul Special for around £800.
Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute DC AMPLIFIERS We are looking to replicate Gotch's Fender amps, so the affordable option to start with would be the
Fender Mustang GTX. The newer Mustang amps are an improvement on the original and have simulations of the Twin Reverb, the Vibro-King and the Super-Sonic.
The GTX 50 (which has a smaller speaker) is roughly £390 and the GTX 100 (which includes a footswitch) is about £510, but you should be able to find both versions for a reduced cost second hand.
Fender Mustang GTX 100 If you do have a higher budget or prefer to use a tube amp, I would recommend going for the
Fender Super-Sonic Combo or the
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for a solid distorted Fender tone.
Alternatively, you could consider the
Fender Blues Junior, Fender Tone Master Twin-Reverb or
Roland JC, and combine them with a ProCo RAT to replicate the tones from
Houkai Amplifier and
Kimi Tsunagi Five M.
PEDALS To keep the list of suggestions short and simple, we will use Gotch's "classic" board as a reference and will cover most of the band's discography.
For a budget rig, I would recommend the
Ibanez Tube-Screamer Mini, which is a miniature version of the standard Ibanez Tube-Screamer and sound great for the price. You could pair this up with a
Boss Phase Shifter and a
BOSS DD-6 Delay for around £309 brand new to get a very similar Gotch board. (You could buy them for as low as £110 combined on the 2nd hand market)
The Tube Screamer Mini is a cheap, effective overdrive pedal based on the classic TS808 For a more expensive pedalboard, the
JHS Superbolt V2 was used by Gotch extensively between 2015-2019 and was once described by Gotch as "the Ajikan sound" on his blog. You could also buy the
TS808 Tube Screamer that Gotch actually used for many years or the
JHS Bonsai 9 which emulates multiple tube screamers.
For modulation sounds (phase, tremolo) the
AmpliTube X-Vibe is one of many great multi-effect pedal on the market. If you have the money for it, you could buy a
BOSS DD-20 second hand or the
BOSS DD-200 to emulate Gotch's delay sound.
If you decided to go with the Mustang GTX, you would also have a selection of effects built into the amp.
THE TONE MASTER PRO? (and amp simulators) As a final recommendation, Fender have recently released the
Tone Master Pro (TMP), which is a multi effects and amp simulator.
It can be used as a device for home recording, but also as multi effects pedal in front of a standard amp or as your main amplifier when played through a IR cabinet. (I'll go into more detail in a bit!) The TMP are not cheap at £1400, so I would only advise buying one if you plan to use it as your main amp and effects board.
If you have the budget and was starting your rig from scratch I would consider checking it out, as it includes great simulations of the Twin Reverb and Vibro-King. They are also easy to transport & the Fender IR cabinets only weigh 12.5kg. (For comparison, my VOX AC15 weighs 30kg and is a nightmare to transport for shows)
The TMP is Fender's first amp simulator pedal and from what I understand the
Quad Cortex DSP, the
Line 6 Helix series and the
Headrush Pedalboard are more popular choices. However, for the purpose of "sounding like Gotch", I would start with the TMP for its Fender selection and simplicity
The Fender Tone Master Pro can be used to simulate multiple amps & as a pedalboard for live performances If you decide to buy a Amp Simulator Pedal, there are 3 common ways to use it for band practices & live settings. (Outside of just using headphones or running straight to front of house at a venue:
Option 1: Only use the effects on the Amp Simulator and run it into a standard amp. (Make sure to not use the cabinets settings within the pedal when doing this. You could still use the amp settings, however they may clash with the physical amps and do not always sound great
Option 2: Use the Amp Simulator as your main amp and combining with a standard guitar cabinet. In order to do this, you will need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run in between the amp simulator and the guitar cabinet. (Otherwise you will not have any volume or oomph when you play through the cabinet\*)*
Option 3: Buy a IR Cabinet. The difference between this and Option 2 is that you would not need to buy a separate power amp pedal to run into the speaker. The Fender FR-10/12 & Line 6 Powercab are good examples.
Recommended Amp Settings
The following amp settings are based on photos gathered from live performances or from photos of Gotch's social media. Every amp will slightly differ based on your guitar or playing style, so you may need to tweak with your settings to find the right blend.
My personal advice is to not put the gain too high and to start with getting the treble and bass settings where you feel comfortable, before tweaking the mids. The P-90s have a strong midrange attack, so bear that in mind as well.
Gotch's Vibro-King and Super-Sonic Fender '65 Twin Custom 15: (Plugged into Vibrato 1) Vol: 3, Treble: 3.5-4, Mid: 6.5, Bass: 3.5
Fender Super-Sonic 60 Head: Channel 1: Vol: 3.5, Treble: 4-4.5, Bass: 5
Channel 2: Vintage setting ON, Gain 1: 4, Gain 2: 0, Treble: 5-5.5, Bass: 4.5-5, Mid: 5.5, Vol: 5.5-6
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as cabinet): Plug into the speaker input at the back of the amp, with FAT switch on.
Fender Vibro-King Custom (as amplifier): (FAT ON) Vol: 3, Treble: 4.5, Bass: 4, Mid: 5.5 (Based on Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol.6 settings)
OR
(FAT ON) Vol: 4.5 Treble: 4 Bass: 5 Mid: 4.5
Shinos & L Rocket Head: Gain: 7, Treble: 8, Bass: 3, Reverb: 0, Master: 7
Conclusion
I hope this has been helpful for you guys, as it has been on my bucket list for some time! Please provide some feedback as it is always appreciated and if you would like more details about the effect settings let me know.

2024.05.14 16:45 continuatio Upgrade that FPRP!
Quick reminder to replace (upgrade) that firing pin retaining pin if you haven’t done so already! This is the pin removed from my SP-01 (broken pieces fell off on removal). All better now Longer version: In the last 6 mos I’ve picked up a P10C, SP-01 and P-01 and a Kadet kit. P10C - first pistol purchase to get my CCW license - staying stock (goes bang when and where needed) - sits in a Bradec IWB for EDC - sleeps in a Vaultek Lifepod at home or away when not carried SP-01 - 2016 model, bought used for a sweet deal before I even picked up the P10C - main use is range fun, and serves double duty for HD beside the P10C - wears a Holosun PID (other than getting dirty, this is nice to have on at the range for extra stability) - didn’t love the original ring trigger; now wears a black Armory Craft “flat” trigger, which has a nicer feel both because of the shape and texture - having bought used, it was nicely broken in already. I did want to lighten the DA/SA pull weight, so I added a CGW ultra lite kit last week, along with their stronger firing pin retaining pin(replacing the original pictured), trigger return spring and floating trigger pin. I’ll run like this for a while and see if I get the urge to go further with the rest of the CGW pro kit. - the barrel was losing its color, so I polished/brushed the chamber end just enormous gah to remove the remaining black coating. I didn’t want a bright polish on this one - came with Trudot night sights but I wanted a narrower and brighter front sight, so I swapped in a Dawson (red) fiber front to contrast the green rear (which I may black out) P-01 (75 D Compact roll mark) and Kadet kit - bought these two together, used - main P-01 use is, um, a bit of everything; it’ll see backup/alternate carry, HD and range use (both in 9mm config and as a Kadet host for additional cheap range reps) - also had the old style ring trigger, didn’t like it in here either so I swapped in a silver Armory Craft “flat” trigger - swapped in the CGW trigger return spring and floating trigger pin with the AC trigger change - no plans to change springs or other internals since this will see a variety of uses - chamber and muzzle ends of barrel polished a bit more than the SP-01 General notes about the work done: - I’m a handy DIY guy, so modifications weren’t really difficult. - the white disc is my quick DIY solution for pounding out pins, cut from a slab of HDPE cutting board - CGW tool kit covered almost everything I needed, supplemented with a small plastic and brass hammer, and a few other punches I had on hand - used some of the HDPE to soften the jaws of my bench vise when working on the slide pins - the original trigger pins took a bigger hammer to get moving, but along with the CGW starter punch they weren’t terrible. Laughing at myself since I started this post talking about replacing the FPRP but I didn’t do the P-01 (yet 😅) submitted by continuatio to CZFirearms [link] [comments]

2024.05.14 15:11 TheGoHistorian New book: Encyclopaedia of Classical Go Problems, Volume 1
ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF CLASSICAL GO PROBLEMS Volume 1: "Wangyou Qingle Ji" and "Xuanxuan Qijing" by John Fairbairn New book by John Fairbairn You want a book that makes learning life & death go problems fun, that helps you understand and remember all those wrinkles, that makes sense of all those knotty themes, that provides comprehensive solutions at pro level? In short, a book that can be considered definitive? Well, here it is. This is the first volume of a projected series of problems from the Chinese classics. Japan and Korea often rehashed these works - as did the Chinese themselves, of course - but their main sources were the Chinese editions that go back a millennium. This definitive volume goes back to the earliest two known collections, the Wangyou Qingle Ji (Carefree & Innocent Pastime Collection) and the truly seminal Xuanxuan Qiqing (Gateway to All Marvels). It thus covers over 500 problems, ranging from superhard to cute. Each one was named. Many are beautiful, difficult, highly practical - or all three - but all are memorable. The names enhance the interest, understanding and memorisation if the problems, while also usually offering a clue to the solutions. The name of every problem is explained here, often in some depth (so giving a unique insight into Chinese history and culture). The fullest possible solutions (over 1,400 solution diagrams) are given on the basis of several centuries of opinions by the most expert players of the time in China, Japan and Korea. Sometimes the professionals differ among themselves! Some problems have over twenty variation diagrams. All known variants of each problem are given. This sometimes means a different solution to each alternative! This, too, promotes deep understanding of the problems. In addition, all the various themes - around 70 - that occur in the problems (many newly identified here) are listed and explained in the solutions and in an overall thematic index. Not only are problems categorised, but the themes can be seen in order of frequency and thus importance. The combination of names, interesting allusions, and identifiable themes further ensures that reader can truly absorb both the shapes and the dynamic principles inherent in each problem. The large number of variants further allows the reader to understand and remember the wrinkles within each theme. The modern Chinese characters for each name are given and indexed, and a character-conversion appendix is also provided for those familiar with traditional characters via Japanese or Korean. There is also a very comprehensive general index (10 pages) to the text. The book is in a large and well illustrated "coffee-table" format of 500 pages, and employs colour. It is the sort of book that graces and justifies that expensive kaya board you invested in. WYQLJ = 37 problems, 90 solution diagrams XXQJ = 466 problems, 1,313 solution diagrams Total = 503 problems, 1,403 solution diagrams Available worldwide on demand from Amazon/Kindle Publishing from May 2024. [Note that, in some respects, this book is a paper representation of the e-book Gateway To All Marvels (GTAM), but has been significantly expanded as regards problems, and the Wangyou Qingle Ji section is new. It does, however, exclude the old texts and other GTAM material not relating to the problems. Volume 2, already approaching the proofreading stage, will present the problems of the Shichi Xianji and Xianji Wuku (both Wood and Leather volumes) in similar exhaustive format. Volume 3 is planned to be the Guanzi Pu.] Details of many other go books available on www.gogodonline.co.uk. submitted by TheGoHistorian to baduk [link] [comments]
