2024.05.14 08:32 sharpeguy I cleared the underworld w 32 Fear, here's how

Preamble

This is going to be a bit of a lengthy post so bear with me. I am going to get into boons, arcana cards, vows, and weapon/equipment choice in this post and how I eventually was able to clear the underworld at 32 fear. All of this is in context of the build I am going for and the weapon I am using. Different vows, cards, etc. may be better for different weapons and playstyles. This is not a definitive guide and I have only beaten it once so far and by sticking to one weapon during my attempts. I enjoy writing about stuff like this and hope that this can possibly help y'all.
I finished the surface on my 23rd run and then the underworld on the next for reference. I just now cleared the underworld at 32 fear on my 143rd run. Of those between were me completing testaments, trying out weapons/aspects, and chaos trials. I attempted 32 fear a total of 36 times before I finally got it. Total in game time according to steam is 74 hours lol (I had a four day weekend and my gf is out of town so this is pretty much all I did).
Proof of run

Weapon/Aspect: Momus Staff

Firstly you want to get enough resources to unlock and fully upgrade the aspect, I think 10 total nightmare? Giving your special +30 power. I wouldn't bother 32 fear until you can get it all the way up.
For a few runs while I was using the skull with Melinoe/Persephone aspect, as I was trying to complete the 20 fear testament simultaneously. Stopped since I decided I wasn't really comfortable with the skull and switched to Melinoe's staff. Did that for a while and then saw this video and decided to give the Momus staff a shot, where i then won in 7 runs after switching. It also probably helped that I changed around some vows around this time, more on that later.
Watch the video for a breakdown but essentially you want Poseidon special + legendary boon, and ideally the double moonshot hammer that gives your special 2 more projectiles that seek. He switches his binds for left and right click but I did not, up to you.
Took a minute to get used to but essentially I just spammed speciall the entire time in fights, kiting enemies when necessary. I used my cast defensively to root enemies and create space mostly until I got a 3 specific boons, more later. Did not really use omegas at all, as I turned off the magick regen card and turned on the vow that removes your magick at the start of each encounter. If I did gain some magick, I would only use it for the omega special to regain some health when it was safe in fights (5 healing if you are near it when it explodes).

Arcana Cards

This is what I used but some may find other ones more to their liking. I will explain my choices below. Be sure to upgrade these to their max potential. The descriptions that I give are referencing their maxed out bonus. I almost exclusively used my charon cards (obol points) to order 8 moon dust in the camp to upgrade faster. Also having 30 grasp is required so be sure to get that maxed out too. Just playing the game should get you there. Gathering bones and completing minor prophecies are helpful in getting more moondust and nightmare faster to upgrade your cards and aspects. I have starred the one's that I think are almost absolutely necessary.
Arcana card choices
I. The Sorceress: Not using omega moves with this build for the most part, mainly chosen to just fill out the top row to awaken the divinity card.
II. The Wayward Son: +2 health (with 50% healing reduction from a vow) is definitely helpful, some much needed passive healing.
* III. The Huntress: +50% attack and special damage when you have less than 100 magick is probably a must have. Especially in my vows set up where I pretty much never have any magick.
IV. Death: Also to just fill out the row for divinity, not really using omega moves.
* V. The Messenger: +10% dodge chance is a lifesaver.
VII. The Titan: More health (and magick) is helpful for the early game before you get any centaur hearts.
* X. The Lovers: 0 damage from bosses for 3 hits is absolutely nuts, this was a whole keepsake in the last game. Attacks that miss you from dodge or daze from Apollo don't count towards a hit as well.
XI. The Swift Runner: Just generally helpful for kiting and running around, especially with increased enemy movement from a vow.
* XII. Eternity: 3 death defiances are absolutely essential probably in any playthrough unless you are a god at not getting hit ever.
* XVIII. Origination: Enemies with 2 curses take +50% damage is fantastic and helps to absolutely shred through them
* XXII. The Champions: 3 chances to reroll boon choices among other things is pretty much a must for run consistency. I would mainly use it on my first Poseidon boon to get the special. Would also use again to try and get slip or blast damage one or legendary from him, also on Hestia to get her cast or the one that allows you to aim the cast (both possible prerequisites for their duo boon, more later).
XXIII. The Artificer: I slept on this one big time at first until I saw someone using it in a 32 heat run on youtube. Change a minor reward into a major one 3 times is fantastic and really helps in the early game. I would use all 3 in the first region for a chance to get a pom, heart, gold, boon, or hammer. I would almost put this one as a must but you do you.
XXIV. Divinity: 20% extra chance to get an epic boon. Activated by the full top row, its just nice to have to possibly get some more benefits out of boons.
Alternatives: Like I mentioned before I only activate I and IV mainly to activate divinity. You could lose them and go for IX Night (automatic charging for your hex) or XVI The Fates (+3 rolls to change location rewards). I feel like hexes are not all that impactiful personally (except for a couple). Also changing location rewards is a toss up, meh. You could also lose XI extra sprint speed to to open up 5 grasp and go for XV Stength (take and deal more damage at low hp), XVII The Boatman (get more gold at the start of the run), or XIX Excellence (higher % for rare boons offered), which all have valid arguments. In hindsight I think giving up those 3 for Stregnth or Excellence might be worth it, might try in future runs.

Oath of the Unseen Vows

Throughout my runs I experimented a lot with the various choices and found that the ones I chose are best for how I play. It is really up to you, this is just how I did it. I mostly messed around with damage taken, enemy spawns, and health, the rest pretty much stayed constant. I originally was using the 9 minute time limit per region for a majority of my runs until I switched aspects (and the 7 minute several times). I eventually decided that I was playing too aggresively to beat the clock and would lose most of, if not all my death defiances by Tartarus/Chronos, or earlier. I did still have decent amount of time to beat Chronos if I got there with the time limit, just the health and death defiance loss was too much. Here is what I went with and explanations for each, I starred the ones I think should be kept on and are relatively easy to deal with.
Vows Used
Vow of Blood (+3): Just don't get hit duh. No but seriously +60% damage to you hurts, a lot. I really wish I did not have to use this, but the alternatives I think are worse. As you play more you'll get better and learn attack patterns and how to kite effectively.
Vow of Dominance (+3): Enemies now have +30% health which is rough, but with no time limit, just take your time in killing enemies off safely.
Vow of Rebuke (+2): Enemies have 2 barriers before they can take damage, not too bad. Makes clearing enemies a bit harder, but with the poseidon boon, you apply two instances of damage with each hit. So only one special shot with the boon will clear the barrier, also the wave the shoots out of them helps to clear barriers of the other enemies.
Vow of Fury (+3): Enemies are 20% faster (and their projectiles too?! I'm pretty sure this is the case, I haven't played without it in a while so I'm not exactly sure). This one took some getting used to, not much I can say except just keep trying. Another +3 makes them 40% faster which I do not recommend. The screaming shades, wolves and their heads, thorny spinny guys in Oceanus, rats, and Chronos are all insane with 40% extra speed.
Vow of Suffering (+2): +100% for the first hit you take in each encounter. Same as Vow of Blood, its rough, wish I could go without it as well.
Vow of Commotion (+3): 60% more foes in encounters (does not affect the boss summons). Had this one a tier or two lower, or not at all, when I was experimenting with the time limit. The AOE from Poseidon definely helps here, just take your time to clear out enemies. It can get pretty bad in tartarus with the bags and skulls everywhere though so just be careful.
Vow of Haunting (+2): Enemies have 50% of spawning a revenant when killed which if left alone long enough will respawn them. These are annoying as hell but not terrible once you get used to it. On death a flaming green skull thing launches out of them and travels a bit of a distance, just run ovecollect them and they are negated, don't need to damage or whatever. Can sometimes be hard to spot if behind a wall or obstacle. Overall not that bad, its not the end of the world if you let them respawn. Definitely though go for the ones that would respawn an enemy that are hard/annoying to deal with ASAP e.g. rat spawning satyrs, wolves, any projectile shooting enemy. Sometimes I feel like rats almost always spawn a revenant which is annoying. I honestly think they should also rework this so that if an enemy respawns it can't have another revenant spawn.
* Vow of Wandering (+3): 25% chance for enemies to be from the next region. Really not that bad at all, just have to deal with some more annoying enemies with larger health pools.
Vow of Scars (+2): Healing is only 50% effective is not that bad. You only get +2 healing passively from the card now and a lot less from fountains and such, goes hand in hand with blood and suffering, you'll get better at not getting hit.
* Vow of Destitution (+2): Charon's shop (and wells) are 80% more expensive. You'll miss out some boons, healing, poms, hearts, etc. but its not awful, you will still gain a good amount of gold to usually buy a boon or something at the end of each region except Oceanus I found. Also with Poseidon in your god pool, he has some boons that can help with getting more gold like minor find doubling up, increased value of minor finds, and sunken treasure.
* Vow of Panic (+1): No more magick at the start of each encounter. In this build you don't really need it anyways so this is a freebie point of fear pretty much. Also if you decide to have the card that regens magick on it pretty much negates it after a little while.
** Vow of Forsaking (+2): This one might actually be beneficial. The two boon options you don't pick will not longer show up in your run. This is why I have the boon rerolls on, so I can guarantee to get Poseidon special on my first boon. Otherwise this helps to increase your chances of getting legendary or duo boons (if you have the prerequisites) since the boon choice pool is lowered after each pick. It is unfortunate though if both prereqs for poseidons legendary are in the given choices and you are out of rolls though.
* Vow of Arrogance (+4): Prime 10 magick for each level of rarity above common that you pick. Again, not using magick hardly in this build so doesn't really matter. Also in lower fear runs I have used this, it does not really matter all that much even when you are using omega moves.
Unused:

Boons/Hammers/Keepsakes/Familiar

Poseidon: Equip his keepsake at start, reroll for wave flourish (special) if needed and rarify. Afterwards look for slippery slope then crashing wave ideally. This primes you to get his legendary which gives +150% damage from splash effects to bosses. Other great ones are double up which is nuts that it can possibly double your hearts, gold, and poms you pick up. Ocean's bounty is nice to increase gold. Water fitness is pretty good if you can get 4 water elements to give you +100 health. Flood control is also nice for damage reduction.
Hestia: Equip her keepsake after Erebus if you did not already get her in your god pool (you get up to 4 gods like in Hades I). Ideally you want her both cast and glowing coal, which lets you aim your cast. Either of which in combination with slippery slope gets you access to Poseidon/Hestia duo boon scalding vapor whcih does insane damage over time. I'm not sure if you should prioritize glowing coal over her cast honestly, both have their upsides alone, but you do want both hopefully. With glowing coal so you can aim your cast since you will be fighting from a distance mostly (not always but in how I played this build I did for the most part), which can activate the steam cloud on foes with slip. Hestia cast is less safe and you need to be closer to enemies to get the steam cloud to activate, but it does more damage, continously applying steam on the enemy. Other boons like soot sprint are nice, almost like Athena's dash in the first game. Slow cooker infusion is alright but you may not get many fire elements to increase your base damage power. Flammable coating is great and helps to melt through armored enemies. Burnt offering is pretty nice to increase you health (and magick) pool if you happen to get offered to sacrifice a useless boon.
Other helpful god boons: Pretty much anything that can help apply another curse to enemies. Demeter and Aphrodite are probably the best since theirs are easy to apply without much effort like frigid sprint, gale force, glamour gain, and passion dash. The other gods require secondary boons to get a curse or your attack/special needs to give the curse, you won't really ever be using your attack and your special is reserved for Poseidon.
Hammers: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like I remember in Hades I if you chose a specific hammer you would be locked out of other hammer choices that affect the benefitting move. If the same applies to this game avoid picking a hammer that affects your special for your first hammer if it is not double moonshot, and hope for it on your second hammer. The DPS from Momus staff is still great with spamming special without it (I won my run without it). You could also go ahead and pick up rapid moonfire or shimmering moonshot on your first one because they are pretty powerful too, and I also may be wrong about the hammer exclusion thing.
Keepsakes: So of course Poseidon first, always. Hestia second if you don't get her in your god pool Erebus. Up to you and what you like for Oceanus, maybe choose Demeter or Aphrodite. If I got Hestia I would generally use any one of the following:
Once in the mourning fields I would typically go with the Lion Fang, or possibly one of the above maybe. Lastly in Tartarus I would either use Knuckle Bones (if I felt comfortable with my health and death defiances), Luckier Tooth, or Evil Eye (if Chronos killed me last).
Sidenote: Is Echo bugged? Or is my game just messed up? I was never given the chance to give her a gift so I've never gotten her keepsake :(
Familiar Toula: Sorry Frinos, but Toula is just superior. She gives you an extra death defiance which when upgraded fully gives you 40 health on death. Also upgrading her attack lets her attack more times before she takes a little catnap (cute). She does 99 damage with each strike which is not insignificant. You don't need to go out of your way to sprint over her whenever she is resting to activate her, if she happens to be where you are running it is just some nice extra little bit of DPS. She has actually killed a few bosses for me in my runs lol.

The Winning Run

So all of this information is from finally beating 32 fear. I followed this strategy in my head for the most part. I ended up not getting double moonshot, but did get rapid moonfire. Poseidon offered me both prereqs for his legendary in the same choice without any rerolls left unfortunately, chose slip of course. I did get the duo boon and both of Hestia's cast boons which was nuts. Also I got rare crop right after I got Poseidon's special so it became heroic by the end. I also got offered to sacrifice rare crop after it became heroic by hestia to get more health, and I was then offered it again at epic rarity which increased 3 other of my boons which happened to hit Hestia's cast boons. I did not get any other way to apply another curse other than slip unfortunately as well. Started Tartarus with 2 or 3 death defiances + luckier tooth and beat Chronos on my last life. Overall though, not a perfect run but it still worked. Would have been even more nuts if I got the right hammer, legendary, and another curse effect

TL;DR

Momus Staff good. More special projectiles hammer + Poseidon special + legendary + Poseidon/Hestia duo = nuts DPS. Arcana cards important, vows are tough.

In the vaping world, vape devices' performance and safety hinge significantly on one crucial component: the battery. Vape shop owners, as custodians of vaping style safety and efficiency, need an in-depth understanding of why vape batteries overheat. This knowledge is pivotal for maintaining the integrity of the products and ensuring customer safety. Let's delve into vape batteries' intricacies, potential overheating issues, and how to prevent them.

Understanding Vape Batteries

Vape batteries are more than just power sources for your device; they are the heart that keeps the vapor flowing. Typically, these batteries are lithium-ion, known for their high energy density and efficiency. However, with great power comes great responsibility—managing these batteries requires careful attention to detail to prevent overheating.

Common Causes of Overheating

Why exactly do vape batteries get too hot? Several factors can trigger this:
  • Improper Charging Practices: Using the wrong charger or charging cable can cause excessive electrical current flow, leading to overheating.
  • Continuous Usage: Constantly running the device can overwork the battery, increasing its temperature.
  • Contact with Metal Objects: If a battery comes into contact with coins, keys, or other metals in a pocket, it can short-circuit and heat up.

The Role of Battery Specifications

Understanding the specifications of vape batteries can be a game-changer. Knowing the voltage, current, capacity, and cut-off mechanisms helps select the correct battery for the suitable device, minimizing risks associated with mismatches that lead to overheating.

Impact of Device Design

The design of the vape device plays a critical role in heat management. Devices with poor ventilation or compact designs might restrict heat dissipation, causing the battery to retain more heat.

2024.05.11 21:36 Mogglez234 Jenna2021 vs DHGate: A review.

Jenna2021 vs DHGate: A review.
So I usually go to DHGate for my replica jerseys, but I recently decided to give Jenna2021’s independent website a try, as she used to be THE seller for jerseys on DHGate & based on some reviews I found online, the quality she used to have has only improved since she broke off there to open her own shop.
I received my first jersey today &, in my opinion, it is nearly flawless. I did have a few concerns based on some QC pictures she had sent me, via email, but that was early on in the order process so I decided to proceed (she will refund/credit if you are not satisfied) in the hopes that the pictures were just off & I can safely say that whatever she initially emailed me was either a.) not mine or b.) not truly representative of the final product. To be more specific, I had some concerns regarding number thickness & size but, while it is still not perfect, the problems I noticed are not even remotely close to being as egregious as I felt after those QC pictures were sent. The fit (XL) is absolutely immaculate. The colors, jersey template (Vapor F.U.S.E Elite), stitching quality, as well as sleeve length are fantastic &, for $36 (now $22), I could not be happier with what I received.
Overall, this was the best experience I have ever had purchasing a replica and, even better, the white legacy variants I now have on the way (#5 Garrett Wilson & #1 Sauce Gardner) will probably be even better in their quality since I presume that any very minor flaws I noticed with this particular order are likely related to the green and black variants of the Jets new uniforms just being released. The white versions have been around for around a year now & from what I’ve seen on her site & reviews, her replicas of these variants are nearly 1:1 in their quality. If I had to put numbers to everything, this would be my scoring:
Ease of ordering: 7/10. I’ll be honest, I don’t really love her “Order on the site & pay, via PayPal’ ‘Friends/Family’ option, after I email you” process. I can easily see this turning off first time buyers who, unlike me, don’t have any experience ordering from her & don’t want to take the chance. That being said, her communication (expanded upon below) put my concerns to rest.
Communication: 10/10. Jenna will accommodate just about any request & has never taken more than 30 minutes to answer me.
Delivery length: 8/10. It’s a tad slower to go through her than DHGate, but not enough for me to really complain. This was technically a “custom” jersey at the time of purchase, as there were no player specific options on her site (I ordered this the same week the Jets revealed the uniforms), which adds on a week to shipping. To give a more specific timeline, I placed my order on April 17th & today is the 11th of May, so it took just a little bit under a month to arrive. My 2nd order is player specific listings, not custom, so I’m hoping those two arrive quicker.
Fit: 10/10. I have received authentic jerseys as gifts & this replica is identical to that fit. I am an XL in authentics & there are no differences to the real thing. There’s a significant difference when comparing this to my DHGate jerseys.
Stitching: 9/10. There are some loose threads that need to be trimmed but, overall, she nailed it.
Overall process: 9/10. Don’t really love the ordering process. Absolutely love the price & quality.
Jersey quality: 9.5/10. Very minor flaws (the numbers are not 100% accurate in their thickness) that I expect to get resolved a few months from now when the real things have been out for a longer period of time but, other than that, I’m thrilled with my purchase & can’t wait to see the other order. I usually know better when it comes to purchasing new jersey designs, but I wanted to see for myself what it was going to look like when you purchase early batches of those, so I’m not going to ding her shop too hard for the little things that I could have avoided by being more patient. Jenna is probably going to be my “go-to” once again.

In my continuing adventures of finding quotes in every Bookworm volume for a new web forum, I'm finally over the hump and have started Volume 2... AKA the volume where it gets good.
On a side note, I read this on the new Clara BW, while it's a marginal improvement over the Clara 2e, there's a weird bug which prevented me from highlighting lines near the sides and top. This also impact the Clara Color, which is fun. Oh well.
---- Review ----
While Volume 2 is leagues better than Volume 1, it still took me a couple of days to get through it. Better than the multiple weeks that Vol 1 takes me, but not as gripping as future Volumes. I am looking forward to re-reading the swap day.
What's good about this volume is that Myne becomes likeable, as her attention moves away from Books to making paper... to make books. Look she's getting there, and she's evolving into a budding Chaos Gremlin. This is also the start of the Merchant chapters, and the beginning of the battles of whit. Which is just sooooo good.
The bad, is that the pacing is still about as slow and expositiony as the first volume. It's necessary for first time readers, and I remember lapping it up after watching the anime. But during re-reads it's easy to skim read, and potentially missing something I missed the first time.
But man that cliffhanger is a doozy, I do wonder what will happen next. /s

I’m new to ink sublimation, but mainly make signs. My shop is tasking me with picking out what to purchase to start sublimating.
If you had a large budget, what would you invest in?
Ventilation is also in question. Unfortunately we don’t have windows that open, what would you suggest? We’re looking at ventless duct hoods, but is it true that some inks don’t emit harmful vapors?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve done a lot of research online, but hearing from experienced users would be so much more helpful.

Francis & Monroe Safeway
What’s the deal with the cameras on top? Is it for license plates? I was parked right next to the road. Or is it just for parking lot security?

2024.05.07 23:04 KingTangerineUno Nike Vapor Elite Jerseys @ NFL Shop - No Detroit Lions?

Hi - I'm trying to buy a Nike Vapor Elite/Vapor F.U.S.E. Elite jersey (the ones with the short sleeves w/ elastic at the end), but it doesn't look like there's any jerseys for the Lions at NFL Shop.
https://www.nflshop.com/?query=Nike%20Vapor%20F.U.S.E.%20Elite%20Jersey&_ref=p-HP:m-SEARCH
This isn't a first time thing - I checked last year and probably the year before and still there's no Vapor Elite jerseys for the Lions.
Does anyone know where I can find a Vapor Elite jersey for the Lions? Looking to get one of the new design jerseys (preferably black) for ARSB.

2024.05.06 22:05 Direct_Bridge9709 Something in the woods

Something in the woods
Something I don’t know what it is, but something is in the woods, something primal and old, something tired, something pure evil, Something very fucking big, something that predates all of this that nothing we made or can make will ever be able to stop. Do you know that feeling that you’re being watched? This thing is so big that it doesn’t give you that feeling. It has eyes everywhere, so many that you can’t tell whether you are looking at it or the woods, maybe it is the woods, and we’ve always lived with it, something older than the big bang or whatever came before it. Something older than our concept of God or God itself. When it moves the forest moves with it, it is the forest. One of those things that came long before humans or plants, names, rocks or sound. It can remain shapeless, which means it can remain deathless and it is not restricted to our space nor the blue rock that is the earth, something that attempting to rationalize or size up would reduce the hardest men to tears and screams of pure insanity and terror. It comes from a place in this hostile universe that is savage, hungry, and primal to its core, a place our god ran from when he created this. It’s always watched us, but we are not and never will be big enough for it to care. Few men have seen it and fewer men have understood it. None survive. To see it is to meet fate, something so terrible and large and beautiful and bizarre shatters the mind and soul. Something so big that death can’t escape it. Death simply takes us to a different place, and whatever piece he takes with him takes us to a place where IT IS. Maybe it isn’t evil, just primal. Older than concepts and our small insignificant differences that we so desperately attempt to use to get ahead. It doesn’t matter, nothing matters and only one thing is certain. There is something in the woods.
I wake up again in the cold sweat that I’ve become used to. It’s that same dream that always comes after she disappeared. I never used to dream. Kelsey said it’s because I had no imagination. What I wouldn’t give for her to say that to me just one more time, but that’s why I’m here isn’t it? The dream gets longer, more vivid the further I follow her. It must mean I’m getting close. I pull over at the motel where he said it would happen and stare into the woods across the street. I feel a strange pulling sensation the longer I stare, and I have to force myself to look away. I’m in the right place, I know it.
“Chuck. You’ve been here all day and all night for over a week. You need sleep.” Bob says as he sits up straight at his desk.
“I’ll sleep when I catch this fuck.” I say as I down yet another cup of coffee.
“Chief has been talking about putting us both on sabbatical after this case. He said he might not wait and just let Morris and Rogers take over.” He says, standing to meet me at the board.
“Those two dumbasses couldn’t find water in the ocean. We almost got…... get me 10th precinct on the line and call in the SWAT team, I know who it is.” I say putting my coat on and heading down to my car.
The triple murder case was closed. Turns out the owner of a local butcher shop had the idea that selling high end restaurants human meat would be a grand money-making scheme. What was left of his victims were found in a storage locker 5 miles from the shop. 3 officers retired after the case was closed. Bob and I were given a month-long sabbatical for our troubles. I decided that the joint savings account could take the hit and Kelsey and I should commence our delayed honeymoon in the Bahamas.
I opened the door of my apartment and expected to be greeted by Kelsey, the brochure in my hand ready to drop the happiest bombshell in the last 6 months. Instead, I was greeted by silence. At first, I thought rational husband thoughts, after all it was 10 AM on a Tuesday, and she was a full-time accountant. And then I see the little piece of paper that would alter the course of my life forever.
DON’T FOLLOW. I LOVE YOU. – Kelsey
I would spend the next few days in a drunken stupor, going through the divorcee grief process, waiting to be served from a different state or a post card with a new man on it, but nothing came. A week went by, and nothing came. I called, I texted, I emailed to no avail. I tried to reach her parents, her siblings, all to no avail. I would spend hours staring at the note trying to find something, anything that would lead me to her, and as if my pathetic state was so moving that it caught the attention of something beyond our realm, I was thrown a cosmic bone. A glint of light would expose the symbol drawn in invisible ink. This is where having an old flame in the FBI comes in handy and soon after calling in a few favors, I received the phone call.
“Yknow, it’s not every day that you get something from a secret organization, I’m still amazed that you even found it.” Syd muses.
“I’m a detective that’s kind of my thing.” I say, taking another drag of my cigarette as I stare out into the skyline.
“Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news chucky, but these guys are good, I’ve found jack shit on the internet about it aside from a few scattered remnants here and there.”
“Do you have a general location? I get the feeling that this isn’t a symbol you find just anywhere.”
“A few scattered carvings on trees, a few tattoos. Give me two seconds…. Alright, I’ve narrowed it down. North Carolina ringing any bells?”
I almost drop my cigarette.
“She went home.” I say, feeling like an idiot for not thinking of it sooner.
“Look, I know what you’re thinking, but let’s try and think rational here, I don’t know if it’s a good idea that you just go stomping around her neck of the woods. People leave each other all the time…”
“SHE WOULDN’T LEAVE ME.” I almost scream into the phone.
Almost a minute of silence passes.
“I’ll give you a call if I find anything more. Don’t do anything stupid.” She hangs up before I can say another word.
As I walk to board the plane, I get a strange feeling that I’m being watched. I look around to see who’s making the hair on the back of my neck raise until I see him. He’s tall and wears a black jacket and jeans. A long beard covers his face, and his eyes are almost white with cataracts, but somehow, I know that he still sees me. He continues walking towards me and I feel my hand drift into my pocket and feel the cold metal of the pocketknife. I wait until he stands next to me and as he’s walking, I hear him say one word.
“Usurper.”
The word has burned itself into my mind and stays with me until I drift into sleep on the flight.
That’s when I had the first dream.
I stand in the clearing looking at the tree line of the woods. I can see the trees begin to move ever so slightly until it makes some sort of face. It blinks.
I wake with a start as the flight attendant nudges me back into consciousness.
“Sir, the plane has landed.” She says with a smile that is a little too wide. I notice that we are the only ones still on the plane and I begin to feel the hair on my arms rise. She turns to walk off and then turns around to look at me one last time.
“For her sake Usurper, don’t interfere.” She says and she steps into the terminal.
I drive to her hometown of Troy, trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Usurper? Interfere? What the fuck is going on here? The thoughts plague my mind until I reach her parents’ house. I see the smoke from miles away. At first, I think it’s just a garbage fire until I turn down the dirt road that leads to the house and can almost taste the acrid vapor. I continue down the winding path and stop at the smoldering remains of the foundation. There is not a single inch of the house that hasn’t been turned to ash or charred wood. No fire trucks. No cops. No ambulances. What the fuck is going on here.
I decide I need to try and get some face to face with the locals and so I head to the bar closest to her former home.
I enter the bar and pull up a chair. The Bartender walks up and slaps his hands on the counter.
“What can I get you?” he says cheerily. The bar is empty except for the two of us and I can tell he’s appreciative of the company.
“Whisky Sour.” I say, which warrants a strange look from him.
“You new around here?” He says with an analytical tone.
“How could you tell?” I say as I count the cash in my wallet.
“It ain’t every day I got folks asking for fancy drinks like that.”
“You got Jack?”
“Yeah.”
“You got Coke?”
“Yep.”
“What’s the next thing do you think I’m gonna ask?” I say, finger gunning him and trying my best to force a disarming smile.
“Single or Double?” He says returning a middle finger.
“Double.”
“Gotcha, want to keep the tab open?”
“Sure.”
He slides me the drink and then pulls up his own stool from behind the bar.
“So, what brings you to town?” he says, eyeballing me like I’m a new exhibit at the zoo.
“Looking for someone. Think you could help?”
“Town ain’t all that big Yankee. You a cop?” He says with a grin.
“How’d you know I was a cop?” I say, surprised at his analysis.
“Accent, Walk, Talk, you’re probably also carrying despite the fact that says no firearms on the premises. Plus, the fact that you’re looking for someone. So, what are you? Marshall? DEA? FBI?” he says, counting on his fingers as he picks me apart.
“So that makes me federal off the bat? Not just a new deputy?” I say, returning with my own sarcasm.
“I run a dive bar in bumfuck nowhere; I know every single cop in this county. Plus, nobody moves here by choice.” Swirling his finger in the air with a laugh.
I laugh with him as I realize that there isn’t a point in trying to hide it, and if anyone knew what was going on around here it was probably him.
“So, what are you doing here?” He says leaning in.
“I’m looking for someone.” I say leaning in and sliding a 100$ bill across the counter.
“Who?” he says, eyeing the bill.
“My wife.”
He throws his head back and laughs.
“Ah yes, one for details. Does this wife of yours have a name? Also keep the money, I ain’t a man who needs to be bribed for his help.” He says sliding the money back to me.
“Kelsey Smith.”
Almost as if on queue, the doors of the bar fly open, and 3 men walk in. They walk almost in lock step and carry easy smiles that deeply unsettle me. The same smile that the flight attendant had.
The bartender stiffens at the sight of them and becomes noticeably uncomfortable.
“Terry.” The leader says warmly, stepping forward to the bar.
“We’re about to close.” Terry says as he begins shutting the lights and jukebox off.
“We can help!” and with a wave of his hand, he disperses the other two to stand at the opposing sides of the bar, blocking our exits.
While the goons look passively on, the smiles still on their faces, the leader pulls up a seat right next to mine.
“My name is Jeremy.” he says, extending his hand in a polite but almost forceful manner.
“Pleasure” I say, sipping from my drink and leaving him hanging. He puts his hand on the counter and the smile on his face grows, almost as if he were baring his teeth.
“You’re new in town. What’s your name.” He says, angling his entire body towards me.
“Charles.”
“Well Charles. Allow me to cut to the chase, have you had the dreams yet?”
This sends a shiver up my spine, and I feel sweat break out across my forehead.
“I’ll take that as a yes. Now, I understand that you are stepping into an environment that you would consider…. Foreign” he says motioning his hands across the bar.
“But when two people call you the same name before you even get to a destination, one must ask himself. Is this the place I should be going?” He sounds like my old elementary school principal, the prick always knew how to talk down to me, keeping perfectly calm but managing to make my blood boil.
“I’m just looking for my wife. I will leave when I find out what happened to her.” I say, staring into my drink.
“There is something at work here that many people have put a lot of effort into, Kelsey included, and we will not have the usurper come and disrupt our efforts.” At the mention of her name I turn to look at him. His face is off. His eyes are wild and almost manic, and his lips are quivering ever so slightly.
“What do you want.” I growl and feel my hand drift to my waist.
“Leave. Never return. I’m sure you know the spiel.” He says. His tone has changed as well. If he wasn’t threatening me then he is now.
“And if I don’t?” I say, sparing a glance at Terry. His hands are under the bar now, most likely reaching for a piece he has underneath the counter.
“We will spare no detail.” Jeremy says, as the veins in his neck begin to bulge.
“Alright, you’ve sold me. I’ll leave.” I say as I stand, put the hundred back on the counter and stand from my seat.
“I’m so happy we decided to be reasonable.” Jeremy says, his face returning to its normal shape.
Without a further word, I get in my car and begin speeding down the road. It’s past 9PM and I’d bet my retirement on the fact that they’re going to follow me, and they sure as hell aren’t going to let me leave this town alive.
I drive for about 10 minutes down the dark and winding roads, long enough for me to realize that I haven’t seen anyone else on the road, which is strange in its own right. My thoughts are interrupted as a pair of headlights appear in my rear-view window and gunshots start ringing off into the night. One nails my taillight, another peppers my trunk. I speed up as my side mirror disappears with another crack. I pull out my own pistol and fire blindly through the rear windshield. One of the headlights on the truck goes out and a second later the truck veers off the side of the road, its course being intercepted by a tree. I look at my pistol in shock. And feel myself chuckle as I pull off to the side of the road. “Still got it.” I say to myself.
I reload and step out of my car and go to inspect the wreckage of my failed assassins. I’m not shocked to find that it’s Jeremy and his 2 goons from the bar. One of them was sent through the front window and face first into the tree, his body resembling something of a meat accordion. The other is slumped in the front seat, a noticeable indention in his skull after he hit the steering wheel and a penny sized hole in his forehead. I look around the truck to see the back door open and a trail of blood leading into the forest. I see Jeremy sitting against a tree. His breathing is labored, his legs are mangled, and he clutches his shoulder as he tries to plug the new hole, I gave him a few minutes earlier. I keep my gun on him as I approach.
“What happened man? I thought we were gonna be reasonable.” I say as I continue walking towards him.
He looks up at me. His smile is long gone, and only rage stains his face.
“Cmon then, get it over with.” He spits at me.
“I’m in no rush Jeremy, I need to ask you some questions.”
“I’m not telling you shit, Usurper.” In response to his name calling, I kick one of his legs which causes him to yelp like a beaten dog.
“Let’s start with that. What’s this Usurper thing about?” I say, dragging a log for me to sit on.
“You are the arch enemy. You will destroy everything my people have built. You and yours will be the ones to usher the destruction of all.” Despite his truly terrible condition, I’m impressed at his vigor and energy.
“I’ve started having dreams Jeremy. Something tells me you know why.”
He laughs at this, a harsh wheezing that sounds like the irony is worse than his pain.
“You moron. You’re apart of this, all of it.” he says, as he leans his head back on to the tree and stares into the sky.
“I’m a part of what. You keep saying these things that don’t make any sense. The only reason I’m here is for Kelsey, you know who she is, you know where she is. Tell me, and I’ll call an ambulance.” I say as I snap my fingers to make sure this smug bastard is staying awake.
“All will be revealed in due time.” He says it, reciting it like a mantra.
“Alright then, I tried the nice way.” I say smacking his hand away and sticking my thumb into the bullet hole in his shoulder.
He winces.
“Where.”
I dig. He moans.
“The Fuck.”
I dig deeper. He cries out.
“Is she.”
I push to the bone.
“STOP STOP. I’ll TALK.” He howls.
I pull my thumb out and rub it on his shirt.
“Sunset. Roadway inn. Cross the street and walk until you hear the songs.” He says as he coughs and tries to compose himself.
“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” I say.
“May it tear you limb from limb usurper.” He says, and then pulling a knife from his waist belt and draws it across his throat.
I stand in shock as he slumps over and gurgles out his last few breaths.
As I stand in the motel room, I do a last-minute check. I take my old hunting rifle and make sure the scope is still working. I tap all of my equipment and jump up and down to make sure nothing rattles. A gnawing feeling in the back of my mind tells me that I came unprepared, but it’s too late to back out. I find my resolve and step outside. I’m in the right place. I stand in the spot where I stand in the dream. It’s almost as if I can see the forest stare back at me, and without further thought I walk across the street and make my way into the trees. I don’t walk far when I can start hearing the songs. A bizarre chant carried on the wind, in a language that I’ve never heard. I can then see the firelights in the distance as the songs grow louder. I see a hill and climb it, and then crawl until I reach the top. What I see draws the breath from my body.
A massive pit. A black hole in the middle of the forest. Standing around it is a ring of torches and behind it stand over 100 people. They’re naked and are covered head to toe in bizarre tattoos, with the same joyous smiles that Jeremy and his men had plastered across their faces. At the front of the pit stands an altar and that’s when I see her. Standing at the edge of the pit is the love of my life, naked, tattooed and smiling. Beside her stands a man, who raises his hands and silences the song.
“It seems that everyone has finally arrived.” He calls out. Which ignites a cheer throughout the crowd. Shit. Theres no way he knows I’m here.
“YOU’RE TIME HAS COME. RISE. CLAIM THE STARS.” The man screams and falls to his knees.
I then see movement in the pit, and giant tendrils rise and begin to plant themselves on the sides of the hole. The man rises and stands behind Kelsey, who he then begins to push towards the hole. She resists and begins to push back. I decide that I’ve seen enough and line the scope of the rifle with the center of his chest. Breathe out. And squeeze the trigger. I feel the push as the shot vibrates throughout my body and a hole appears in the man’s chest. Silence falls and then screams ring out. “USURPER”
Before I understand what’s happening, they’re on top of me and dragging me towards the pit. They beat me with their fists and clubs, tearing my clothes off and painting the tattoos on my body. I try to fight but they hold me down and drag me to the altar. I am brought to my knees before the altar and look at Kelsey. She is joined by an old woman who raises her hand to bring the crowd to silence.
“THE FALSE VESSAL HAS BEEN DISPOSED. THE USURPER HAS COME TO LEAD US TO THE STARS.”
I’m brought to my feet and led to the edge of the pit. I feel a hand grab mine. I look to see Kelsey holding on to me. She pulls me into an embrace, pulls away, and leans into my ear.
“Trust me.” She says, and then shoves me into the abyss.
I’m falling. I fall for what seems like hours and seconds. I finally land. I begin to sink, and I realize I haven’t landed on the ground but something warm. Something alive. I then feel the tendrils wrap around me and pull me in. I sink and as I sink, I begin to see. A billion-year plot, eons of deliberation, plans, executions, all of history, every hour, every minute, every second all converging to center on this very moment. The big bang, the creation of all life, and everything before it. I begin to feel an urge, the urge to claim, the urge to conquer, the urge to take. I rise. I continue to rise until I rise out of the pit and into the sky to go and claim the stars.

2024.05.06 01:15 yinor62332 How many questions to the seller is too many? (NC)

We've been house shopping in NC for a month now. But the whole non-refundable "Due Diligence" thing here is really giving me pause to put in any offers given the number of things that you can find in inspections. We've seen some great (on the surface) houses that are openly flips, and I have so many questions: Why is there no crawl space vapor barrier? What happened to the insulation in attic that's half bagged up? Why is the yard full of trash? Why was the pool removed but the pool liner is still half buried in said yard? What's with the attic vent that's just unplugged?
I get it... no house will be perfect. On the surface these are fixable problems in a few weekends of cleanup labor. It's what I can't see that worries me. Is it unreasonable to pose them to the seller though (through my agent) and judge the answers? Or are we just expected to go with what we see and don't ask any questions.

2024.05.05 22:24 phuck-player Bauer League Sticks and CCM Team Sticks for 2024

It seems like there's a decent amount of people that works in this industry here so I'd like ask a few questions regarding Bauer and CCM league/team stick for 2024 as I'm currently in the market for new sticks. Hopefully others can benefit from this post as well.
  1. Is CCM going to stop making intermediate sticks with the P90TM curve for the 2024+ line?
  2. Bauer is releasing the Nexus Tracer shortly. Is there going to be a refresh for the league version of the Nexus stick? The 2024 catalog at the moment just says "pending update"
    1. If so, any major changes compared to the previous generation?
  3. Is there a comprehensive list of Bauer league sticks available? I understand Bauer only refreshes one line per year. However, the catalog regardless of year only lists one model which appears to Nexus
    • I know they have Vapor and Nexus league versions. Would be nice to know the permutations and options available but I suspect it's more or less the same from year to year (eg, same flex and curve options)
  4. Some retailers lists Bauer sticks with S21 and S22 in the description. What does it mean? Yeaseason?
  5. Will Bauer make their P90TM curves available at a different price point (other than the Hyperlight 2 stick) - doesn't look like it according to the retail catalog
  6. Any idea when we can expect to see 2024 BaueCCM league/team sticks available at our local hockey stores?
Thanks!
Update:
I thought the Jetspeed Team isn't meant for retail but a variation of it seems to be available on CCM's own store [3]
This model is listed as: HSFTM6-IN which appear to indicate it's a FT6 and it's available in P90TM, but with a 55" shaft. However, CCM 2024 team catalog lists the Jetspeed FT+ Team as HSFTPL6 and states it's using a 57" shaft but not available in P90TM. This retailer lists the HSFTPL6-INT-55 [1] model but appear to be mostly out of stock and doesn't indicate if P90TM is available.
It looks like upon further Googling, 2024 Jetspeed Team will be based on the FT6 model which is what's listed in the CCM 2023 Teams catalog [2] and the P90TM curve isn't available for intermediate 55/65 flex. I guess a refresh Jetspeed Teams based on the FT7 may be available next year.
I guess the only question left is, what's the difference between retail Jetspeed teams vs Jetspeed FT+ "team" teams? What does M and P denote?
  • HSFTM6 - available on CCM's online store, retail team
  • HSFTPL6 - listed in the team catalog, both 2023 and 2024; available at retailer [1], called Jetspeed FT+ Team
  • P == Pro?
  • M ??
  • L ??
  • P90TM is not available with the intermediate 55/65 flex.. that sucks..
Update - 2024-05-06:
It looks like there is a retail Jetspeed Team and Jetspeed FT+ Team "team catalog" variant.
  • HSFTM6 - listed in CCM's 2024 retail catalog as a hybrid kickpoint - intermediate is 55" with P90TM option
  • HSFTPL6 - listed in CCM's 2024 team catalog as a hybrid kickpoint - intermediate is 57" but the matrix says it's not available in P90TM. See for CCM team catalog for matrix

4 ton Mr.Cool Universal install on an A/C upgrade to heat pump

I thought I would share a write up on a 4 ton Mr.Cool Universal install on an A/C upgrade to heat pump done using traditional methods, not their pre-charged line set.
This is only my 3rd install. I have my 608 license but not a plumbing or electrical license so some of this could lack the accuracy their experience could provide.
I ordered through Ingram's and had a great experience. It shipped out next day on an afternoon order and took 5 days to go across the country with great communication along the way. The delivery truck had a pallet jack and they placed it right where I needed it.
The old system was maintained every year by an HVAC company with no complaints from the owner (my parents) and no service calls during its 10 year life.
The key learnings:
The service valves are on the opposite side of most A/C units. I knew this going in and bought extra line set to extend the existing.
You may need to add flex line and a junction box so you can splice in more t-stat wire to lengthen the thermostat wire as it also needs to go to the right side just like the line sets. The power disconnect was installed on the right for the prior system so I had extra #6 wire to work with.
I put the unit on a pad as they live in a desert climate and it rarely drops below freezing. The Schroeder valves are on the bottom of the service valve. I had to dig a hole in the ground to give working room for the valve core removal tool to pull both for the vacuum.
The pads Ingram's sells are fine but I’d rather pay more for a heavy duty pad that is a bit taller. If I had another day, I would have poured a concrete pad and placed anchor bolts. If you do, keep in mind the front right foot is in front of the service panel so it can’t stick up much without getting in the way.
The service valves are 6mm and 8mm. A regular service wrench won’t work, but I needed it to uninstall the A/C.
Get a 1/2” and 1” 90 degree bend for the electrical knock outs for power and thermostat so they head straight back to the wall.
The old line set was somehow not perfectly round. I had to use a swaging tool to widen the narrower spots. This wouldn’t have been an issue with brazing as it can handle gaps and wasted a lot of time.
Since we were reusing the old coil I went through a ton of nitrogen. I had the smallest tank you can rent from a welding supply store and actually used almost the entire bottle. This was to blow out old oil in the system to facilitate a deep vacuum.
I pulled and broke the vacuum 3 times with nitrogen. Pretty satisfying to see it pull down to 220 microns.
You need an inspection mirror to check your work when the system is that low to the ground.
There is some conflicting data on line set driers. Gree says not to use them so I didn’t.
I needed to add 6oz of refrigerant for this system. Double check the valve connection on the can you buy. Mine wasn’t machined properly and the valve core depressor on the gauge lines couldn’t push it down. I am surprised they were even able to get the Schroeder valve in to fill the can.
Since it is dual fuel, we used an Ecobee lite thermostat. What a great option. It makes “heat” your HP and you get another system called “Aux” for the furnace.
I’d give a shout out to AC Service Tech on YouTube. I learned most of what I know from him and can’t believe there are such good videos available.
This is pretty long, so skim for the details that matter to you.
Pumping down the old system:
Trane makes it pretty easy. I run the furnace fan to create a heat load. I close both service valves to make sure they move. Then fully re-open both. I put a gauge with no lines (Amazon) on the service port to reduce refrigerant loss. Press the contactor in (this is dangerous so use your thermostat phone app to run the A/c then pull the service disconnect). It was very easy on this 2013 XR 16 system. Let the machine run for 15 seconds. (Some videos show starting with the high side closed and the machine struggles to start. No point in that). Then close the high side all the way. I watched the gauge go down until it said zero. Closed the quarter turn service valve and released the electrical contactor.
We cut the lines and disconnected the wires. The old unit was 380lbs but moved easily on a regular hand truck with 2 people. The driveway had a ramp on it that made loading it in a truck easy. Watch a video on loading a refrigerator in a pickup and it isn’t as hard as you think.
I was able to trade the old unit to a master electrician who wanted to learn what I was doing in exchange for his help. It was awesome and I got to ask him electrical questions as we went.
Forming the line set:
I started working on the line set extensions. The old vapor line was 7/8. I knew this ahead of time (calipers, outside diameter 0.93”) was able to find a fitting that converted 7/8 to 3/4 which Gree allows. (They also allow a 5/8 vapor line set.) I would suggest getting extra fittings and some 90 degrees even if you don’t think you need them.
The stub of line set I was connecting to came out of the wall at a downward angle to point it where it typically goes for an A/C unit. This is where I wish I had a 90 degree fitting. There was enough room to make a sweeping 90 degree bend in the line set. The bender I had sucked (Amazon). I practiced with it on some scrap line set. It would kink if you went to a full 90, so I spread the needed bends across the length of the line. I also had a spring bender and fully suggest that as a second option, especially if you need to bend in 2 planes. Working with 3/4 line is pretty tough. 7/8 seems like it would be so much worse. The 1 1/8 some units are suggesting now seems like your install time would be 3x.
The 3/8 line I had a nice bender for and it was simple to work with.
After you make all your bends, now you have to flare the pipe with the pipe opening to the ground. I would suggest flaring before putting in the final bend so examining it is easy. I had to examine mine with the inspection mirror and cell phone camera which I didn’t like. I generally plan to flare up to 3 times per line set because I like them perfect. I also have a battery operated flare device (Amazon)so I spend zero minutes being annoyed at having to redo one. I also replace my pipe cutter for every job because they are cheap and a sharp wheel makes nicer cuts. Each cut gets de-burred thoroughly to avoid disturbances in how refrigeration flows as well as line set clean out when they system is replaced.
2 of us slid the unit on the pad. The house was built around 2000 and based on my parents prior landscaping experience with the property, they said the whole yard was professionally graded and mostly rock free. I used 18” long, 3/8” diameter threaded rod with a washer and nut on it to “stake” it into the ground. I pre drilled 1/2” holes through the pad. This wasn’t my favorite way to do this but I didn’t see any other options I liked better besides an extra day and concrete.
I have a giant torque wrench(Amazon BlackMax). A 10 inch adjustable isn’t big enough to fit their flare nuts. It is a good size to use to support the service valve. I pre load my settings the day before so there is nothing to look up or screw up. Memory 1 is the liquid line. M2 for vapor. I did the 3/4” line first. I inspect the brass receiving side to ensure it is clean and the flare for imperfections. I generally start with the low side of the torque range in the manual.
Nitrogen/Vacuum testing:
You need 2 valve core tools. More importantly you need 2 5/16”. A/C use 1/4” typically. I like the Appion Max (Amazon) which are colored pink for the 5/16” size and they feel high quality vs the cheap ones on Amazon. They are $80 each and worth it. Putting the valve core back in is the most stressful part to me and is 100% a “feel” thing. You want to feel the valve click into the core remover when pulling it out and definitely need to feel it catch the threads and fully seat all the way to avoid a leak. I had a valve fall off once with the refrigerant released and had to re seat it blindly floating around in the tool. I have no interest in repeating that. I suggest practicing removing the valve and putting it back a few times when you first remove it (refrigerant still safely in the unit) to get the feel of it.
The indoor coil was 10 years old but looked brand new. It was impressive how perfect it looked. This is why we decided to reuse it. Trane designates a heat pump coil with the letter H 4 digits from the end of model number. A TXV needs a check valve for heat mode to work. The literature on this was a mess. I found one brochure that said the TXV didn’t have an internal check valve. I made a post prior where someone else responded expressing this same concern. I crossed my fingers and hoped Trane wasn’t that annoying to call something a heat pump coil and not come with a heat pump TXV.
Nitrogen side tangent:
People say you don’t need it. Here is my impression of what it is doing. “Nitrogen” is actually dry nitrogen. It absorbs moisture out of the air. For it to dry out the inside of your system, it can only do this if you fill it, let it absorb, flush it through with more nitrogen, let that sit. The oil in a heat pump absorbs water and this degrades its longevity. There are videos online that show this. I'd like to have a system last as long as possible. The second thing it lets you do is pressure test for leaks to the manufacturer specification. Its hard to do that with a vacuum. How to get nitrogen.
  1. Go setup an account at a welding supply shop while your unit is in transit. Assume they have bankers hours unless otherwise posted.
  2. They will set up an account for anyone. You need the account because you are taking a tank they own and just like the library wants a book back, they want their tank back.
  3. You can buy a NITROGEN regulator from Amazon for $50. Don’t buy it for a different gas or it won’t fit the tank. CGA-580 is a typical tank standard.
  4. It’s $45 to get a tank. So for ~$100, you can do your install correctly. Obviously this doesn’t apply for Mr. Cool no vac lines.
Rant over.
Reusing the coil created some challenges that offset the ease of not replacing. I blew 100 psi through the unit for a while to try and move the oil from the low spots in the coil. It blows it to the side of the coil tubes more than out. Anywhere there is air or nitrogen between a pool of oil makes pulling a vacuum difficult. I also pressure checked the system at 300 psi. In hindsight the liquid line will have 325psi in it at 85 degrees so I would go to 400 in the future. I couldn’t find literature from Trane that said how high I could go ojn their coil. They say to check at 150psi, but the system will be higher than that when it is off. For example If they would have said 500, I would have done the max Gree says. A vacuum isn’t a leak check no matter what you find on the internet. A vacuum with standard gauges isn’t a vacuum. You need a micron gauge (Amazon $180) and a 1/4” valve to protect it from refrigerant. I used a 3rd core removal tool because i couldn't find a 1/4 valve that didn't look really cheap.
I did my leak checks during the nitrogen test. I go really slow and don't just wipe the blue liquid on, but hold the applicator with a lot of extra fluid on it to the joint so it is fully submerged as I go around the line. It makes it easier to see small leaks. Again time consuming, but worth it.
After a 1 hour stable nitrogen leak check, I slowly removed all but 5 psi of nitrogen. Then pulled a vacuum. The first one didn’t go deep as the oil had settled. So I blew more through and quickly pulled a vacuum before it could pool. I did this 2 more times and pulled a 220 micron vacuum. I open and close the valve core tool valves to ensure no air is trapped in the valve mechanism. On the mini split installs I have done from scratch the only rose 20 microns after an hour. This one rose 70. I accepted for the following reasons:
  1. It was gradual. Field piece has a nice video that shows a logarithmic rise (more at the beginning, much slower at the end) is fine if it stays in range.
  2. The expected reason it doesn’t fully stop rising is the equipment/hoses/fittings can’t maintain a permanent vacuum that deep.
  3. AC service tech showed it’s ok on a new system and seemed unconcerned.
Clearly this was time consuming, but I had baked in extra time to do this.
Refrigerant release:
I disconnected the hoses from the valve core tools. Now was the time to let the refrigerant out. The instructions say to start with the high side. I cracked it open, then the low side. Then opened each a little more.
I put the valve core back in the tool. Once that is screwed on, I burp the lower half of the tool as there is air below the valve.
Now you have to fight the 320 psi to push the valve in and begin threading it. I hold the flat plate with one finger on one hand and turn the plate with the other hand to thread the Schroeder valve.
I was about to add 6oz to the low side of the system when I discover the refrigerant bottle top wasn’t manufactured right and had extra metal hanging into where the Schroeder valve was. I tried to see if I could remove it and couldn’t. It was blocking the opening enough my hoses wouldn’t be able to depress the valve so I had to abandon this idea and will fix it when I have a new bottle.
Leak Check:
At this point I screwed a 1/4” cap with a hole drilled in it on the core removal tool to leak check the Schroeder valve. Again I had to use the inspection mirror because the valve was so low to the ground. I checked the service valves were fully open and placed the caps back on wrench tight. I checked each joint again with the blue leak detector.
Somewhere in the vacuum wait time, I hooked up the thermostat wire. I’m going to leave the details out as some of the wire colors were in use so I used other wire colors. One issue we had was the wire going from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit must have originally been too short so someone spliced in a short extension and then hid the splice. So the A/C wires were connected, but none of the others were. I will probably examine this more in the future during the planning phase. Home Depot sells really nice 10-wire thermostat wire by the foot so if you need extra, it is easy to get.
Electrical Hookup:
The disconnect was still removed from the box near the outdoor unit. The existing power wiring was stranded #6 wire on a 50 Amp breaker. I changed the breaker to a 40 Amp. Mr.Cool wants lugs to connect it vs crushing the stranded wire in the L1/L2/G screw. You can get these on Amazon or from Home Depot.
We secured the flex conduit where it left the wall and where it attached to the unit. They don’t provide pre marked holes for this so we drilled with a 3/32 and put a sheet metal screw in to hold the anchor. We did this for both power and thermostat.
There are 2 small clips inside the outdoor unit on the right wall to secure power and 24v wire separately, a nice touch. Setting the dip switches:
I set the dip switches for a 4 ton unit in energy efficient mode with standard defrost. I initially figured defrost mode was performed by running the fan using the indoor return air to heat the coil. Per the manual, dual fuel fires up the furnace to do it faster.
Startup:
At this point we were ready to start things up. Put the disconnect back in and set the A/C temp low. The control board powered up, various parts inside made soft whirring noises, the the little display said “00” and after about 30 seconds the fans kicked on. I sent my mom inside to see if cold air was coming out and got the thumbs up. We tested heat and it didn't work. We found the wire splice, fixed it an it worked. I also tested auxiliary and it worked. It was quite the relief the TXV worked in heat mode.
Background:
I flew in to do this install so coordinating everything took a bit more work. I did have the benefit my dad has a lot of tools so I didn’t have bring larger heavier items. We shipped stuff in a week before I arrived to confirm everything made it with time to spare. I also bought extra line set for the extension and that paid off in figuring out how good the bender was etc. I probably won’t buy the 1.8 lb R410 tank again (black made my Penn Chem) and rather get the pink 2lb tank that had the green valve and 90 degree 1/4” port.
I’m still amazed at the flexibility of these outdoor units. I like that they can be pumped down for service/retirement and they put service valves on their indoor coil. Thermostat flexibility let us buy a $99 thermostat vs the $700 Japanese brands that don’t have built in WiFi (so they can charge extra for a WiFi module).
The unit is outside the master bath which is just off the master bedroom. They could hear their old A/C. This one they can’t.
I have some angst about the service side of things not living there. I wrote a ton of notes on the inside of the electrical cover that seem pertinent. The fact you can only check charge by weighing it out makes me really hope there are no leaks during its useful life. It seems like recovering it to weigh it would be very expensive and not even accurate as residual r410 stays in the system. It could lead to it being over filled when they weigh the charge back in. If it were to cool less at some point and a leak could be found and repaired, I wonder if you could add slowly with the unit running until the cooling was back to what it was before. What keeps it from getting over charged though if an inexperienced tech just starts adding. How would you ever figure that out without weighing the charge back out.
I hope this helps someone else in the future! Curious to hear from others if there are steps that could have been done betteeasier.

Milled Doug Fir: Second thoughts on my interior finishing plan
Hello, I'll try not to be long winded but I'd love suggestions on my finishing plan. Here's broad strokes:
  • I had several Doug Fir logs milled as we were developing land in the PNW. I plan to use this for interior siding of a large (36x48) workshop/garage.
  • Since this is for workshop/garage and not our (eventual) house, I was aiming for a rustic/cabin vibe.
  • I used a black vapor barrier after insulating the walls, and was planning to just install the planks vertically and not deal with routing and grooves or shiplap. I am cool with rustic vibe with some gaps showing. The black will help hide the gaps.
  • The guy I worked with to mill the wood suggested finishing with a mixture Danish Oil along with an oil based poly. I've since learned this is called the "Sam Maloof" method in several circles. I was not planning on plane-ing the wood, and just finishing it "as is".
OK -- So I did a few test pieces with that method. My big "second guessing" is just the sheer volume of off-gasing in my test board during the curing process. And I have ~2k square feet of this stuff to hang. I imagine the interior will be nasty for many weeks (if not months) after doing all this. And since this is a side project I wasn't planning on doing it "all at once".
Now I feel like I'm back to drawing board; here are the things I've considered:
  1. Just hanging it with no finish
  2. Use water based poly. I like this for the no fumes, but I suspect this will take multiple coats so more labor.
  3. Plane wood, hang naked, finish later. $ for planer, and then more labor before handing. I figure planed (vs. rough) would open up the ability to finish after it's hung later.
  4. Rubio monocoat. Went to rocklers and this was suggested. I know this is max $ plus would probably need to be planed as well. So more $ and labor.
  5. original plan. One coat of danish oil mixed w oil based poly. I think the workshop will just be unusable for the many months I'm finishing and hanging.
It's the logistics and the desire to have the shop usable while the siding is going up that has me confused.
I'm adding pictures to help as well. Thank you for any alternate ideas or suggestions.

An Alchemist's Intro (New Character). AMA. [Intro/Lorepost]

Gyldan, the Gold Alchemist of Greed and Generosity
The art of alchemy of using the matter of the world and turning it into more pure or more utilizable states. There are many ways of doing this: Distilling into Water, Vaporizing into Air, igniting it with Fire, or having the impurities bond with other Earth elements. Many different alchemists have their specialties from potions, poisons, powders, tinctures, elixirs, foods, or in my case, Metals.
I was luckily enough in life to have a talent over gold, but also silver, brass, and platinum. Pretty nice for a pretty lady, hmm?~ It flows like liquid for me, shaped and molded with just a wave of the hand. This orb? Oh, it's just Brass but I wanted it to be pure gold, but Hoode repeatedly told me not to do so to "draw shady looks." That's no fun but I understand his point, hmm~
Well, my luck had to compensated in somewhere else, and that was my humble beginnings~ Daughter of a blacksmith, ain't that a title. Life was alright, but not the most comfortable. I spent most of my days helping around the shop carrying ores, fetching tools, polishing gleaming items *drools*, ahem. Sorry, I have a bit of a thing for the splendor of fine metals and minerals, hmm~
Through my talents, I gave back to the love ones and community that raised me, before spreading my good fortune with everyone who deserves or need it. So call me Glydan, the Golden Alchemist of Greed and Generosity. I come interested in what the wizarding world has to offer, so Ask Me Anything dearies~
/uw
Hello, I made another character for the Wizardposting and Orbhub so I wouldn't have to use my Persona (Hoode) all the time. I had the idea of a rich wine aunt for everyone who can still kick ass. Although note that I am a dude RPing a girl, just to let you guys know ahead of the time.
