Does anyone else sometimes finds themselves just googling and copy-pasting solutions from stackoverflow? Debugging errors without thinking too much but rather just pasting the error into search bar or AI assistant? Running commands without fully understanding what they do? Hopelessly reading page after page until you find someone with the same problem and a solution?
I know it's nothing new. There are many memes around it and anyone who ever coded or configured any new software know exactly what I am talking about.
However, now as a working professional with master degree in CS and multiple years of experience as a software engineer I came to conclusion that my job would be much more enjoyable if I was more confident in what I am doing. If I could be expert in the technology I work with. I ask myself why does it have to be this way.
I believe it's related to the job market and employers expectations. In other fields, people specialize much more. For example dentists learn how to treat teeth and they can work their whole life treating teeth without worrying they will be asked to perform a hearth surgery at any point.
Software engineering is different. You see jobs that requires knowledge of backend, frontend, database, cloud, linux and optionally ML. Not to mention each of these are huge areas on their own.
Why can't I just become expert in Java, learn its libraries, frameworks and build tools in details and be hired? And work with team of people who would handle other things? I guarantee the product would be much better and all people involved would be less stressed at work.
But no. IT companies, the most valuable companies in the world with insane profit margins can't afford to pay more people.
They can't afford to lose time either. Everything needs to be done fast. Suppose you encounter some new technology that you need to use in work and you are not familiar with. In other fields, they would slow down, provide you formal training for working with this technology and then you would know exactly how to use it properly.
In software engineering? Figure it out. Google around. You don't need to learn it in depth. No one has time for that. Just run this command from stack overflow with 3 upvotes. Just get it done.And this kind of workflow is accepted accross the whole organisation, from juniors to seniors to managers. It's accepted accross the industry.
And if you want to do it properly or learn more about it, you are free to do so in your own time. Oh no. Not only that you can, it's expected of you. On top of working overtime to meet deadlines, the industry expects you to work on hobby projects and grind leetcode. Also, get some certs, it will help your career.
Have I just chosen wrong career path? I am not completely against learning, I enjoyed it in school. But the more I am thinking I didn't enjoyed learning itself. I enjoyed knowing. I was happy when I learned something and then I applied it on the exam and got a good grade.
But in work, it seems like I am learning directly on the exam. It's stressful and I after I finally learn and apply, I am quickly off to the next problem.
When I was still a student, this approach seemed exciting and full of freedom. But now when I am supposed to give estimations for my work and guarantee certain level of quality I feel like I am on thin ice most of the time.
Not to mention I don't even know who I am anymore. I work with so many different technologies that labeling myself as Java developer (my original career goal) wouldn't be true. I also wouldn't perform too well on Java Developer interview since my focus had been split accross too many other areas in past years. Obviously I improved in all of them, yet, I mastered none.
I am not sure if this makes any sense. I guess my issue overall is that I have to handle many things and don't have time for them.
Does anyone else have this experience? Do you honestly enjoy it? Or would you like it if the industry slowed down a little and allowed people to work slowly but with more confidence? Does it all feel rushed to you, too? Or am I just a bad software engineer?

I've found myself in a bit of a career crisis and could use some advice.
Worth mentioning upfront: I am self taught (I took a few introductory classes on Java on my first companies dime). I have no college degree.
About 8 1/2 years ago I was able to transition from a pretty entry level "Data Analyst" type role into a job developing Talend jobs. I stayed in that initial role for about 5 years, before moving onto another ETL Developer role for about a year, and finally my current position.
In about the last year or so, I've begun to feel very trapped. I feel that I am in a weird half way state of trying to become more of an "Engineer"-- in my current shop a bulk of our "development" is either pulling data from MySQL databases or APIs, and running it through Java components where we write code to create reports, provide customers files for their own ingestion, or making API calls. But at the same time, I am acutely aware just how limiting relying on a GUI is and how small of a market there is for me in this world.
Like a hundred other users before me, I am trying to decide between a certification in either Azure (DP-203) or AWS (AWS Certified Data Engineer) to help differentiate myself in the job market and to try and help pivot out of my role. Do either of these certifications make sense for me? Would one in particular be better for someone who's hoping to write more code?
I hope this makes sense. Any advice would be well appreciated.

I am trying to make a standard PDF form wherein Page 1 is text entered into form fields and page 2 is a narrative format (think report style).
For page 1, I want to ask standard questions and have the form fields in those sections get linked to certain areas of the narrative on page 2.
For example, page 1 would have a field that says “what is the employees first name?” then there’s a form field to enter the first name to its right.
Then I’d like the value of the form field from page 1 to get copied into a certain area in page 2 in the same font and format as the surrounding text.
For example, “[value of field 1, page 1] joined the company in 2023.”
Is this something that could be done using JavaScript? Or any other Microsoft Office product?

Hey everyone. I graduated a little under a year ago and have been working full-time ever since. My team transitioned from Java to Kotlin about six months ago, and what an absolute joy it has been working in Kotlin.
We're doing a lot of new development, and I’ve found myself unsure about the proper way to structure an application. I understand that the right structure is the one used within the company to maintain consistency. While I want to stay consistent with the company, I also want to learn the "right" way and potentially bring new knowledge to the team.
Yesterday, I spent a few hours creating a simple API project that connects to and uses a database. The goal was to learn how to properly structure an application like this while referring to documentation, write-ups, and tutorials.
I wanted to learn the proper:
With some conflicting information and my lack of experience, it was difficult to make qualified decisions. I'm left with a project that I find hard to validate in terms of good structure and what could (and should) be improved.
Here are some questions I ran into during development that I couldn't find concrete answers to:
  1. Should routes be structured so that each subroute is located inside its own subfolder, or should they be kept in one file with all routes included?
  2. When using a data class for models, what's the best way to reuse classes? For example, if we have a superclass, Product, and I want a Book to inherit the properties from Product, what's the preferred way, especially when these need to be serializable too?
  3. SOLID principles, at any cost? I found that for smaller projects, SOLID seems to introduce more boilerplate code. How do you know if SOLID is overkill for an application?

I've been running a code that generates a login page for a desktop app. By logging in succesfully, the user would be sent to the main UI of the app ("Mainwin.py"). However, everytime I tried to log in, it gives me an error about 'pymysql' not being found, even though I already have it installed. The error is caused by a file named "actividad.py", which is used to show what user has been using the app lately:
