Master Of All: A Really Neat Perk (& Also Other Generic Gamer Musings)

2024.05.13 22:24 Sin-God Master Of All: A Really Neat Perk (& Also Other Generic Gamer Musings)

Today I'm discussing Master of All, which is a perk from Generic Gamer. If you've never seen this perk or heard of this jump... this perk is probably the best singular perk in the jump (though ALL of them are really good), but it's not the INTENDED reason to come here. I personally think an early jump could stand to benefit from fusing GGJ with a more mundane jump (which is what my latest story-jumper is doing though not by choice) and grabbing this perk, it's appeal is kind of amazing. Now let's see the ACTUAL perk!
Master of All: Specialists focus on depth at the expense of breadth; generalists focus on breadth at the expense of depth. But what if you could focus on a single ability and have it benefit all of them? When you train one skill, ability, or power, that training and development applies not just to it, but to all of the skills, abilities, and powers you possess.
This is, understandably, a capstone perk. It is immensely powerful, and is the best TRAINING perk I've ever seen. There are BETTER perks out there for mastering stuff, heck I'll even include the other capstone in this jump just so you can see a better perk for MASTERING something.
Hyperspecialization: There’s focusing in a few specific areas, and then there’s this. Select a single skill, ability, power, Perk, whatever, so long as it’s possible to improve. At base, two things happen. A: the chosen ability progresses as if you’re training with it all the time, even when you’re doing nothing; if you were to actively train with it, the rate of growth would be effectively doubled. B: the rate of growth and development for the chosen ability is multiplied by a hundred.
Now, keep in mind that that’s just at base — both of these boosts increase gradually but exponentially the longer you focus on a single ability. Give it a few days, and the rate of growth will be multiplied by two hundred; a month, and by a thousand. You can change what ability you’re focusing on at any time at the cost of resetting the accrued exponential boosts.
Hyperspecialization IS a better perk if you want to master singular skills (or if you need a boost in power or skill in some SPECIFIC area but don't have the time to actually sit down and hone that area), but if you want to TRAIN something, if you value working for your goals, and if you want to be a jack of all trades Master of All is the better perk. And of course you could always grab BOTH perks, you could even do so without a SINGLE drawback AND you could still get other perks WITHOUT stacking drawbacks due to the discount mechanics of this jump. But I strongly prefer Master of All, personally.
Master of All is a very creative way to reward engagement in a setting which is something I'm always a fan of. A smart jumper who is not constrained by something like the notion of a fickle benefactor who ACTUALLY punishes boring jumpers might get something like Hyperspecialization and want to turtle up, but with Master of All you need to do SOMETHING for it to benefit you. Now WHAT you do doesn't matter, so long as you do SOMETHING that serves as training.
A very fun build could be for someone to snag both Skills, which is a function of the gamer system in Generic Gamer and then grab MoA and go to something like Generic School Years and diligently study. That studying will definitely count for MoA, since studying will definitely become or involve a skill as defined by Skills. This means that while you're studying you're becoming better at gymnastics, or cooking, or painting, or... using The Force, or mana management, or whatever other skills you've gained at this point in your journey.
One small facet of Master of All that is very interesting is how it stacks with uncappers and the very neat knowledge that there is a free uncapper in Generic Gamer (it's a facet of the gamer system!). This means that Master of All will eventually give you stuff like functionally limitless stamina and potentially unlimited strength, once you get the right upgradeable stuff at least. A fun thing I like about this perk is how it affects stuff like workouts. Workouts not only make you more physically fit with this, they also strengthen your perks, strengthen facets of your physique, and can even improve your luck (assuming there is a perk for your luck, which there IS in this jump in two senses: there's The Devil's Own Luck, AND there's a gamer function called Attributes, which CAN give you a luck stat if you want, I recommend it partially to mix with this perk). The idea that going for a joydrive can strengthen your telekinesis, or actively make you smarter is very funny but also very true with this perk and the right mix of gamer things.
This perk on it's own is somewhat limited, but a smart strategist who wants their jumper to be able to stand alone has a lot of options they can use. Two of my favorites here are Jack of All Trades and Experience Booster. JoAT is a fun perk that makes it much easier for you to hone new perksyou acquire along your chain, and Experience Booster is just a POWERHOUSE of a perk that boosts how much experience you get from anything that gives you experience, whether you only get it from defeating enemies or you get it from doing minor stuff, and if you mix it with Master of All you get a powerful combination since it makes it so that your workouts buff your brain by twenty times as much as they would otherwise. The best way to cheese it has got to be to go all in on game-ifying your life and taking the skills function of the gamer system, which allows you to make a ton of stuff into a skill, which thus plugs it into the Master of All functionality. Here, look at the description of Skills so you can see what I mean.
Skills (-100/-200/-300 GP)
For 100 GP, any ability or skill you possess becomes a ‘Skill’, with a skill level, increasing in power and efficiency as it levels up, done by gaining enough experience, which is gathered by using the skill; Level 1 is maximum inefficiency, while Level 99 is the maximum efficiency you could normally get — you can go even beyond that, though, with no hard cap to how high a skill’s level can be. The higher a skill’s level, the more experience required to get it to the next level. Generally, the more powerful and useful a skill, the slower it is to level up.
Any powers, skills, or abilities you already possess are automatically converted into System Skills. You may gain new skills by performing relevant actions; for example, throwing a knife might earn you the skill ‘Knife Throwing’. Skills will not deteriorate with time or disuse.
For an additional 100 GP, once a skill has reached Level 99, it may ‘prestige’, granting you an at least vaguely similar but much more powerful skill at Level 1 without taking away this one or, occasionally, traits if you’ve purchased the option. Prestige skills may themselves prestige. Prestige skills are especially difficult to level up.
For an additional 100 GP, you may ‘combine’ certain skills into a new one — without actually losing the ingredient skills.
This is hands down the best way to cheese this. This is also just a VERY good function in general, but guaranteeing that your skills can improve AND uncapping how good the stuff you do and the stuff you make can be is INCREDIBLE. This also allows you to become holistically better at everything just by cooking, or reading, and thus rewards you for having hobbies. This perk is very nice because it frees you from the constraints of training and having to incorporate stuff that makes you a stronger jumper but is more time-consuming and is not what a native would do.
I'm gonna take a beat to talk about Hyperspecialization again because one thing that's worth mentioning is that it's a passive trainer perk. It's MORE than that, sure, and in fact if you get it you're getting something worth every bit of CP you pay for it, but at it's core it's an enormously powerful passive trainer. There are other passive trainers. There didn't USE to be, at least not a LOT of them, but they exist now (these types of perks exist in several Edrogrimshell jumps, usually they are named "Dabbler" but not all of them have that name) so this perk has lost of some what made it unique. A perk doesn't have to be unique to be valuable, but it helps. Master of All, on the other hand is part of a, as far as I've seen, rarer type of perk: a training synergizer (something which blends types of training and studying together), and it's also a COMPLETE training synergizer which I've never seen before or anywhere else (normally the training synergizers I've seen link SPECIFIC skills, such as a perk from Generic Wizard which syncs how strong you are with your skill as a wizard, or a perk from Generic Culinary Warrior that links your cooking and combat skills). What this means is that if you miss out on Hyperspecialization you can go to other jumps and snag an equivalent perk there. In fact, you can actually grab something that is a MINOR improvement over Hyperspecilization, because all of the passive trainers I've seen let you passively train more than one thing at a time. It IS true that Hyperspecilization beats out these other, baby perks in how quickly it trains what you assign, but that minor aspect of its winning out is somewhat lessened in importance when you remember that placing something new in the lone slot hyperspecialization gives you resets how fast it trains the thing in question. Master of All is both less easy to compare to other existing perks and doesn't have any internal conditions that weaken active usage of it like Hyperspecialization does.
Now that's not to put you off of Hyperspecialization, if I were in a real chain I'd want to grab BOTH Hyperspecialization and Master of All (and not just because MoA completely removes the weakness of Hyperspecialization, but that's certainly a part of it haha), these are INCREDIBLY powerful perks, but one is... one is more universally useful than the other. Master of All is just an absolute S-tier perk. I cannot imagine any build where MoA is applicable where it wouldn't be an absolute GOD-TIER of a purchase. The only possible combination I could think of that might invalidate MoA would be the Sage x Spirit Touched combination from the ATLA Redux jump, and that'd be most of your base CP in a jump that has MULTIPLE sections worth of stuff to try and grab.
To put this in perspective, with a perk like this and the right combination of gamer things you can go into a setting like Chronicle and hone your telekinesis by working on your photography skills. You can become a better chef by doing your math homework and rereading whatever chapter of MacBeth you're on in English. Once you've gained the right skills you can become better at soccer and other sports while you design a website. Become a better wizard by practicing juggling. This is an incredible QoL perk that frees you from a lot of the time-crunchiness that comes with only having a decade in a setting as opposed to a lifetime. Honestly that's kind of the biggest strength of the particular nature of the Generic Gamer Jump, it does a LOT to free up your time and really let you optimize your time in a setting.

Generic Gamer As A Time Optimizer

So depending on the setting, a decade is either a LOT of time or it's BARELY any time. In Avatar the Last Airbender, a decade can be a HUGE amount of time (the entire plot of the first show is about one calendar year according to one of the show's execs), but in Harry Potter a decade is only a bit more time than the plot takes, and truthfully is barely a blink of an eye. So perks that allow you to have a special relationship with time are always good.
One of the critical facets of Generic Gamer is how it allows you to optimize time. There's definitely some underlying logic here, since game characters have INCREDIBLE growth rates, and I love that about this jump. Generic Gamer, for the cost of 50 GP lets you lose the need to sleep, the need to eat, and the need to drink. That is an INCREDIBLE boost to the amount of functional time you have in a jump, if you started your chain off as a base human and entered this jump as a non-boosted human or as an only minorly-boosted human. Getting rid of three of the most essential bodily needs for the cost of 50 points in a thing where you start off with 1350 points makes it a steal (You get different points for perks and for gamer system customization in this jump).
A big part of how essential this is, is how much time it saves you by eliminating sleep but in all honesty removing your need to drink or eat is also critical. I don't know how many jumps could safely be taken as first jumps that completely eliminate the need for sleep, food, AND water, but this one can and that's pretty OP given the costs. Also, bv eliminating the need for stuff like food and water you make entire other jumps wholly more viable. Minecraft, for example, becomes WILDLY safer if you don't have to work about starvation, since hunger is directly linked to your ability to recover from wounds but in Generic Gamer you can completely subvert this system by spending 100 GP: purchase Gamer Body (eliminating the need for food) and also purchase the HP System (which gives you fiat-backed regen, so long as you don't take a hit for a beat, giving you a passive heal much like some FPS games).
Gamer's Body & HP System guarantee you survive any setting that isn't actively trying to kill you, and also frees you up to more safely do what you want like explore or just have a good time. If you don't have to pay for food or housing for sleep, you either don't need money or you need a LOT less of it. Stuff like this is also DRAMATICALLY powerful for vampires and other creatures that are normally driven by, or at least associated with, constant hunger. Also this just makes zombie jumps hilariously easy for you to solo since the number of risks you have to take (while solo) are SO MUCH lower. Funnily enough the right set of perks here even lower the risks you have to take when you work WITH other people, as Inventory lets you both raid places by yourself (since you can store an infinite amount of stuff on you by yourself) AND lowers how much supplies you need for your friends (since time doesn't pass for stuff in your inventory, preventing it from going bad!).
This jump is also filled with training boosters, with Jack of All Trades, Experience Booster, Hyperspecialization, and Master of All all qualifying as training boosters broadly, they all just qualify as different TYPES of training boosters. This is very interesting, since one of the big things a lot of adventure jumpers will need sooner or later are training boosts of their own. The best training boost here is Experience Booster which buffs training by 100 times, a STUNNING boost to one's training, and this stacks hilariously with every other training booster here.
I have a lot of thoughts on this jump and I think I'll keep writing them down from time to time. It's just so good.

The HDD spins but does not read and freezes the file system until it is removed.
My situation A few weeks ago I was transferring data to this 2.5 inch disk that I had connected to my computer via usb as additional storage. Even though my computer was giving me warnings that my disk health was bad, I kept using this old disk for a while longer and learned my lesson. I have data on the disk that I want to recover, but the prices charged by local data recovery centers are too high for me to afford. I am aware of the risks and want to try my luck.
Observations When I connect the disk to my computer it starts spinning and makes no unusual noises but the file system on my computer freezes. I can see the name of the device in device manager, but not in disk manager, only when ejecting the disk two partitions on my disk appeared very briefly and went away.
Help! In my research I came across software tools like ddrescue, TestDisk, gparted, parted magic, HDDSuperClone. I am a software engineering student who can use Linux and has access to both Windows and Mac machines. Which of these software would be most useful for me and what should I focus on?
What are your views on this situation, I would appreciate your feedback. I will keep you informed about the process.
(I also bought the closest disk I could find for this recovery but the pcb revision numbers are different. The disk I want to recover is on the left in the photos.)

2024.05.13 22:02 loanstone Relative click sample paths on Windows

Hi everyone. I've been searching (maybe wrong keywords) for a solution to the following problem:
Got a song project for my band set up for live use - includes backing tracks, click and midi commands for outboard gear.
I work with linux or mac (whatever's faster to reach at any given time) to update the song at home and sync it through cloud.
Midi files and backing tracks are in the project's root folder and always work without problems on any system. Click sample on the other hand, is one level up in its own folder (just for convenience if we want to change the sound or whatever).
Structured like this:
Songs
--- Click
------ Sample.wav
--- Song1
------ Project.rpp
Our rehearsal room has a Windows laptop.
On unix, using a relative path for the click sample works without issues (../click/default.wav). This way obviously won't work on windows. However, neither does anything else. ..\click\default.wav doesn't do anything.
What I wanted to do was to prepare the song at home, use a unix relative path just to check that everything is lined up and then switch it to windows pathing (it's just a text field in the end and who cares if it won't work on my systems anymore).
One solution would be to have the click sample in the project folder but honestly, i don't want to do that for every song. Reuse is the best option here.
Have you ever come across such a problem?
Btw i also noticed that on windows source files (under ctrl+F2) for tracks are in absolute paths written like this: C:\\\Meda/track.wav. tried the final slash for the click as well to no avail.
So if you have an idea why it's being so naughty, please let me know. Thanks!

2024.05.13 21:38 Sawyr_ Custom Media Player

I'm looking to achieve something particularly specific. I'm not a coder, but I'm a designer and I'm willing to learn. Basically I'm trying to create a functional media player for use on desktops, particularly Windows but I'd like it to run on Mac as well if possible. I went down the rabbit hole of trying to reverse engineer and recreate the old WMP skins that were popular during the 2000's, as this is the style I'm more or less trying to recreate. I tried to make those work but I was running into alot of issues, hoping for an easier alternative route to that. What I'm looking to make doesn't have to function as a universal media player for all audio files, but I would like it to be at the very least a self contained playlist of tracks I have files for. The main thing is being able to make the skin for the player look however I want it to, while having the functions of play/pause/next track implemented. I also like the idea of it being able to be ran independently of any other software, if possible. For example, if I put it on a disk for somebody, it would be ideal if they can just run it and have it open right up as its own executable file. Not sure if that means I need to look into .exe files, but if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it!

Nt1 server error
I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but my Mac gives me an error message every time I turn it on that says “there was a problem connecting to server “nt1”
I have no idea what that is or how to stop it, I’ve disconnected from all previous servers, I tried allowing file sharing, still get the error. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance!!!

2024.05.13 21:24 BrilliantGamer Cannot re-install game

I'm trying to install league of legends on my gf's laptop after I uninstalled it because I needed some space for work stuff and it just isn't letting me. I've tried clearing out all related files thinking there might be a problem with the computer thinking the game is still there, nothing. I tried restarting, using different download sites, I keep getting nothing, and there's no time machine saves on the laptop so I can't revert back to when the game was installed properly. I am familiar with apple products, I don't know if I've been thorough enough or if it's something very simple I don't understand.
Tldr; I need help reinstalling league of legends on a MacBook

2024.05.13 21:21 BabaWheelchair Inaccessible trackpad on Mac. Should I risk buying iPad M4?

Hi,

I have a locomotor disability and I am a quadriplegic.

I'm a Big Apple fan and use an iPhone 14, Apple Watch and Apple TV.

I used to use a MacBook till 2020 but decided to change to a Surface Pro 7 that year because the new macbooks had too large a track pad - I tried a friend’s for a day and just couldn't use it. The problem with the large trackpad for me is that a rest both hands on the side of the track pad and then move them pressing keys from one finger in each. With the large trackpad, my hand kept touching the trackpad making me mistype.
I am looking at upgrading my laptop again and miss being in the Apple ecosystem. I am very tempted to buy an M3 Macbook Air. Is there any way I can disable part of the trackpad?
Alternately, on the trackpad on the iPad seems to be of a decent size but due to file management constraints I'm not a big fan of iPad OS. Would it be realistic to expect MacOS for iPad Pro M4 at WWDC?
Apple prides itself on accessibility. I have heard so many blind friends talk about how Apple has transformed delays. Please guide on this problem or who and how I can approach apple with it - it's a shame that I cannot be part of the ecosystem just because of my disability.

2024.05.13 21:18 scs_03 Condo Fannie Mae Issue

Hi all - I’ve recently run into an issue with the condo I live in. Wasn’t sure if anyone else has experienced this in the post-Florida-condo-collapse that led to these stricter rules. I’m going to copy and paste a portion of an email I sent to my lender to see if she knew anything (sorry for length but without context I feel like this issue doesn’t make sense):
We learned recently that we are on the ineligible for funding list for Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. It was very difficult to even learn why we are on this list as Fannie Mae will not tell us anything and they say we have to work with a lender. We kept hearing random pieces of information from people trying to sell their units, but a lot of it seemed to be just rumors (for example someone said that our roof was an issue but the roof was replaced several years ago and has a 30 year warranty so this can't be the case).
A fellow Council member was finally able to speak to her lender and she said that the main issue seems to be the way our Council President answered some questions about our balconies. We believe there has been a misunderstanding/misreading of our documentation and we would like to correct the record and have our building re-evaluated for funding but we do not know how to do this. Fannie Mae keeps telling us only a lender can submit these updated documents. Essentially, when our reserve study was done a few years ago it identified that some balconies needed repair. None of these were urgent, the study just recommended we replace them over time as funds permit. As a follow up to this, we had a balcony study done and we identified the most urgent, medium urgency, and least urgent balconies for repair, and we put together a tiered repair plan where a few would get done each year. We have stuck to this plan and we are currently on schedule for what was supposed to be completed by 2024. It will take a few years to finish them all, but this is all in line with the plans. None of the balconies were rated unsafe/unusable and at this time all residents are permitted to use their balconies. It is also worth noting that the balconies are not attached to the core structure of the building, so even if a balcony were to become unusable, it would not impact any other part of the building or present any structural dangers. When our Council President filled out the condo questionnaire recently, in the section where they ask about structural deficiencies , she checked yes - since it is noted in the reserve study and since we did a whole separate study on them and we include all of those documents as part of the resale file, she felt yes was the right answer because anyone who reads those documents can see the situation. In the follow up question that asks when the repairs will be completed, she wrote "as funds permit," which again is the recommendation that was made to us (but we do set money aside each year to do a few, it isn't as though we are just waiting for years where we have extra funds). Apparently this has set off the Fannie Mae system because they think that a) we have a true structural deficiency and b) that we are not currently repairing it because we don't have the money. This is not the case for either point, but we do not know the right way to rectify the situation or provide additional clarity and context to the documents and have our information re-reviewed.

2024.05.13 21:07 macboost84 Anyone using Mac Mini (M1/M2) as a server for mostly Apple household?

I have several Apple devices from a MacBook Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, three Apple TVs, iPads, etc… I’m also thinking of buying a Mac Studio if they ever update to M3 or M4.
My goal is to be able to use the Mac Mini for remote Time Machine backups, cache updates / apps, iCloud data caching, file & media sharing,
Two external hard drives will be attached. One dedicated for Time Machine and the other dedicated to file/media sharing. Caching will be done on the local drive and likely dedicate 128GB, maybe 256GB for it.
The Mac Mini specs will be 8c CPU/10c GPU with 16GB/512GB & 10Gbps NIC

I'm feeding a Modi 3+ via S/PDIF (TOSlink) from a Mac mini playing ALAC/FLAC files, some of which are 96000 Hz 16 or 24 bit. According to the specs, the DAC accepts "16/44.1 to 24/192 via USB, Coax, and Optical." But if I don't have my software downsample to 44.1 or 44 (bit depth doesn't seem to matter), nothing I play at 96 actually generates music, just pops and clicks and what sounds like bursts of digital static. Weird. Anyone else ever experienced this?

With Fallout 4's mods being fixed on console today finally, I felt like posting the absolute best Gun Mods i've found on console, I'm a bit of gun nut and have no love for poorly animated mods.
Here's the top shelf stuff!
S TIER
So what makes an S Tier by my standards?? These guns are animated masterfully, seriously good work went into these gun mods, they sound right, the animate right, they oomf right, amazing stuff.
As for why i listed "Revamp" versions, its because the Revamp mods of these gun mods, are posted by Lkilgore14, this guy is the GOAT of console gun mods, he compresses the files to take as little space as possible (Because we only have 2GB of space) while maintaining the visual quality of the models, while swapping out the SFX to arguably superior versions of the original.
A Tier
There are more guns i'd like to throw in here, but its been so long i can't remember them. But hope you enjoy the list.

2024.05.13 20:20 Internal-Agent4865 Do you think Apple will finally improve iPadOS at WWDC?

No this isn’t a post about how I need macOS on an iPad (although the option would be cool). This is more about basic functionality as a computing device.
My top four features that should have been available 10 years ago are:
1) better file manager to work with external ssds etc 2) allow two videos playing at once in split screen. I watch a lot of sports and twitch and I can’t believe apple hasn’t gotten their head out of their ass on this one yet 3) more supported peripherals especially when it comes to docking. Windows already destroys all apple operating systems in this. From monitors to mice and keyboard support. 4) can we please get an actual mouse cursor that behaves like an actual mouse or at least the option?

2024.05.13 20:05 jbiz143 Colima and docker instability: randomly freezing, requiring reset

I've been trying to troubleshoot an issue with Colima I've been seeing for weeks.
Colima will install and start fine, and I can start my ~20 containers without issue. However, mostly randomly, colima and docker will suddenly be completely unresponsive and containers will stop.
The only remedy is to restart the mac and run colima delete and start over.
I'm running colima on an Intel i9 with 32GB RAM.
I'm hoping someone has been able to resolve the instability issues with colima running docker on a Mac. The performance of docker on colima is so much better than Docker Desktop and I'd rather not have to go back to it!
Here's the default.yaml:

2024.05.13 20:00 Dr_Superfluid High end Windows vs high end Mac, personal workflow review

Hello friends!
So after recently completing my dream mobile and desktop setup I did run my workflow today on both to see the differences between the two platforms and their behaviors.
My setup is the following:
Desktop:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7950X (16 core, 32 threads, base clock 4.5 GHz, turbo boost 5.7 GHz)
GPU: NVIDIA 4090, 24GB VRAM
RAM: 64GB
Disk: 2TB Samsung 990 Pro
OS: Windows 11 Pro
Laptop:
MacBook Pro 16” M3 Max
CPU: 16 core (12 performance cores at 4.05 GHz, 4 performance cores at 2.75 GHz)
GPU: 40 core (whatever that means… ), 48GB VRAM (stock because apple limits the access to the shared memory of the GPU to 75% of the total, but there is an easy workaround to have full access if needed)
RAM: 64GB
Disk: 1TB
OS: MacOS (the latest version, don’t even remember the name)
I think that these two devices, while not the absolute best of their respective platforms, they are close enough to get an understanding of the peak performance capabilities in each situation. Of course one is a massive desktop and the other a relatively small laptop.
Workflow:
I work in mathematical modeling and AI. My codes are usually CPU based 70% of the time, with the amount of cores making a huge difference, and for the hardest of the project’s codes I do run them on GPU. My codes are not memory heavy, they comfortably fit in the 64GB of both machines. Also, because I am developing math oriented AI models I write the codes of my models myself, so it’s not the traditional ML with all the known packages that is offloaded to the GPU and it handles everything. Of course I utilize tons of packages, but I want to specify that it doesn’t work like an LLM where everything is preconfigured to run on the GPU, a lot of the maths I do are not to be done in GPU’s so that’s why I need good performance in both.
So to test out the differences, I picked 2 tasks that I run this week to test the multicore CPU performance and the GPU performance. (Disclaimer the GPU task also utilized the CPU quite a bit - but it is what it is, that’s what I had at hand). All 2 tasks are run in Python, version 3.10.something. The maths are done through libraries like pandas, numpy, scipy (BLAS LAPACK accelerated).
Task 1: Pure CPU performance. cpu_count() -> 16 on the Mac , 32 on the 7950X
Task number one is a mathematical one, kind of repetitive calculation running with all cores.
7950X: about 1420 seconds M3 Max: about 1070 seconds
This result surprised me a lot. I do not see a reason for the M3 Max to be that much faster than the 7950X. In theory it should be slower in every single aspect. It is not, and by quite a margin. Possible reasons: 1) Python is more optimized in MacOS 2) access to the memory in the unified chip is a lot faster. (Because I was a bit taken aback I also run this code in two additional machines, my old M1 Pro that I sold to a colleague so I borrowed to test out and run in 2300 seconds, and a company dell laptop that we have with a 13th gen i7, which I got bored of waiting after about 1.5 hours. So this trend seems to hold true also in the lower end windows vs Mac machines)
Task 2: GPU test with some CPU usage.
This is a mixed CPU + GPU code that accesses some big files. GPU is at 95+ % all the time, while CPU fluctuates from 40-90%. Using torch, with “Metal” on the Mac and “CUDA” on the PC.
4090 + 7950X: 8 minutes M3 Max: 25 minutes
This difference is very very substantial and showcases that apple has a lot of work to do in the GPU department. No matter how good the M3 Max GPU is it can’t hold a candle to the 4090. Maybe if the model didn’t fit in the 24GB of the 4090 then the M3 Max would have done better due to double the VRAM, but my model isn’t that big so the 4090 crushed it. Also to understand how heavy this task is, if I run it on the CPU of the M3 Max, it takes about 12 minutes for 1 iteration and it needs to do about 2500 iterations. Thank god for GPU’s.
Single core tasks. Also, in single core tasks in python the M3 Max is a lot faster than the Ryzen.
Conclusions. I was very very impressed with the CPU performance of the M3 Max. I have worked with many high end machines due to my work and to be honest it’s the fastest CPU for my work I have ever seen. It makes the 7950X which felt like an absolute beast compared to the 3900X and i9’s I had before, now feel quite meh… And lets not forget these are extended loads and the desktop is easily 10 times the volume of the laptop (probably more), with water cooling and I don’t even know how many times the wattage.
But… the 4090 is king. Nothing gets close to it. When it can stretch its legs it destroys everything. That said, a 4090 laptop would not have been as powerful (probably still faster than the M3 Max in GPU loads though), and it would be a loud brick with vastly inferior CPU performance ( I have no data on that, but if the M3 MAX beats the 7950X I am pretty sure it will beat all laptop CPU’s as well). I hope that either apple reaches this level one day, or we see GPUs like the 4090 in mobile form in laptops that are not built like anvils and sound like jet engines. So for a laptop of this form factor and battery life I am quite happy with the GPU performance of the M3 Max. But ooof I always know how much better the 4090 is 😂.
Now if only apple allowed us to use dedicated GPU’s with the M chips, and especially NVIDIA ones I would be one happy boy. The next day that happened I would buy another 4090 and an external enclose. But becoming the pilot of the Millennium Falcon seems more probable than that haha.
PS, I do also have a linux machine but it’s a lot slower and I don’t use it for these tasks so I didn’t include 😕.. i don’t have one of even comparable power to see if it would make a difference.
Final Disclaimer: all the results are for my codes and workflow. In different workflows the results might be very different. I can only judge for my case.
I hope that somebody finds this useful or interesting! Cheers

2024.05.13 19:43 lukedala Hardware Recommendation: Upgrading from 2012 Mac Mini

Hey everyone here. I have been a huge plex user for years and have been operating off of an old 2012 Mac Mini that i got second hand. I have really liked using the Mac ecosystem for a few things; like moving files around. I am looking to expand and dockerize everything; Plex, Arr-Suite, Portainer, etc. We are at the point now where my 2012 Mac does NOT run docker and I need to update.
I was looking into getting a refurbished M2 Mac Mini to replace it. I like the form factor of the Mac Mini and the software. That being said, I was debating if I ought to get 16gb of RAM and 500gb SSD. It seems like that would be the safest thing to do, but it costs about $1k here in the states. I have heard mixed reviews about smaller mac minis; that the 250gb ssd' that comes packaged in the smaller M2 Mac Mini are slower? Is 16gb overkill for dockerize?
I have also considered getting a BeeLink or something similar with similar specs, and just going the way of Linux. It wouldn't be a huge issue for me, but right now, with the rest of my house running off of Apple products, I think it would be the easiest transition for me to move that, especially if it's only a $100 difference between the Mac Mini I want and the BeeLink.
Wondering what the thoughts are from the docker community? If I am looking to upgrade hardware and I already like the Mac eco, should I simply pull the trigger on a Mac Mini when the price is right? or BeeLink? Or should I consider something else?

2024.05.13 19:40 mango10977 Why is it so hard to transfer file from MacBook to my android phone?

I edit a dashcam video on imovie ( 55mb) and want it on my android phone but it won't let me. The only way I could get it to work if I put the video file on a USB and then transfer the file from the USB to my android. Doing it this way, the video quality drop.
Any way I can transfe video file that won't change the video quality without having to download anything?
I have a m1 macbook. 8gb ram.

2024.05.13 19:38 Peskygriffs How Do I Easily Transer Music to New Computer?

I just got a mac and I have about 15k songs in apple music on itunes. i am trying to copy my entire library over, with album art and play count, but im having difficulty.
i know you can just go to the itunes media folder and copy and paste into the music folder on mac, but the problem is some of my music is not listed in my itunes folder.
is there a way to consolidate all the music files in my library and put them all in one folder that i can then transfer to new computer, all without ruining my current library or crediting duplicates?

2024.05.13 19:30 juliacakes Merging csv files and having the file name as a column?

Hi! I have fifty csvs files - each is named after a state and has keyword data. I'd like to a) combine all the files into one sheet in a workbook and b) create a new column of the csv file name. I'm using a mac, if that makes any difference. Any idea of how I would do this in terminal or using excel?
Thank you in advance!
