2024.05.11 20:25 ANormalCrum A theory about the dream sequences

So Flynn’s dream sequences may seem weird and unnecessary at first. I assure you though, no matter how funny or fever dream-y they may seem, this theory might be convincing.
Dream 1: This dream takes place after Flynn puts us to sleep before waking up in Josh’s room with Banbaleena. Symbolism here takes place, with Flynn symbolizing us (the parent), and Banban symbolizing Flynn. Flynn probably doesn’t know how to drive a car (which symbolizes the parent not knowing what the kindergarten is and where to go), as we can also see that Flynn is driving in circles. This is Flynn telling us that we do NOT know what we’re doing. His warnings take form as Banban’s warnings. Flynn just ignoring Banban is probably the same as us ignoring Flynn’s offer. The scene ends in the car crashing, which may mean that Flynn is warning us that if we go too far, we’ll meet our fate.
Dream 2: This one is the dream with the campfire and the famous Choo-Choo-Charles cameo (💀). As surprising as it may seem, this one isn’t as funny as you may think. This time, no one is symbolizing anyone else. The axis of our concern in this dream is Flynn’s speech (the one where he says we’re doomed, etc). Flynn is coping about the fact that he couldn’t achieve his goal with ridding his consciousness, which makes me feel sympathy for him, not gonna lie. I mean, Givanium creatures feel constant pain (as confirmed in past notes, case reports and such), so of course he wouldn’t want to experience the mental and physical pain of being conscious as something not even meant to be alive; a mess of clay, flesh, and fake blood.
Dream 3: This is the bus stop dream. Back we go to symbolism. Stinger represents the parent yet again. But before we get into that, Flynn also camouflages this phrase into the dream, making it seem like he’s talking to Banban but he’s actually talking to you. Said phrase being “if it weren’t for your infuriating actions, we wouldn’t be in this current predicament”. The journey of going to the beach (or in your case, finding your child) has turned into a catastrophe that you cannot solve. Now, in this dream sequence, you slowly start losing member after member. Flynn is telling you that you are hurting people by going through your path, and that if you don’t stop, everyone will be a goner. I like this part because you lose friends one by one, just helplessly watching, as Captain gets kidnapped and Nabnab gets injured.
Dream 4: This is the plane dream. Flynn is also yet again symbolizing the parent. Banban asking Flynn how they’d get down from the air to the beach, with Flynn abruptly shouting “I DO NOT KNOW!”, is Flynn telling you that you are just delving deeper with no real plan, you’re just going forward for your desire of finding your child. Now here’s the interesting part: Banban turns hellish in this dream, which is symbolizing Flynn taking forceful action by sending Hellish Banban after you. When Banban turned hellish, Flynn suddenly started acting like the whole thing’s his fault, and that he’d done nothing wrong. This may be the reason Flynn is constantly reminding you that you’re faulty of some troubles down in the kindergarten.
If you’ve read through all of this, I just want to say thank you for sharing your time with me. I never thought I’d write an entire essay about the lore of Banban out of all games, yet here we are. Hope you enjoyed the theory :-)

2024.05.04 20:24 The_A_Man__ Dutch Microstate Of Netherlands.

Here's how to fix the Netherlands:
Extreme bdsm, as in, face-slapping, punching, anything that causes traumatic-brain-injury, concussions, (which can be detected in MRI tests for court trials), and any other permanent bodily injury.
That would make it the only place in the world where women be safe and free. The only place where:
To further limit domestic violence in households (not brothels), some optional things that can be implemented (which I highly advice) are:
+++
Your current law code is lame and hypocritical; as per the current laws on racism, to highlight IQ differences between races, to emphasize empathy/psychopathy prevalence differences between racial groups, is racist! And yet, the very notion of a-law-against-racism rests on the belief that races do exist, that there's skin-coloskull-shape/genetic differences between so called "races" they aim to protect; how could the state accept that there be such differences but illegalize for such differences to be discussed and admitted? Utterly ridiculous!
Your current judicial framework is a joke. A client could beat the hell out of a prostitute (just short of killing her) and he has more-or-less legal impunity! A wife-beater gets a mere month is prison! What sense does that make? To believe that, somehow, in a closed cell, locked in for a few months, playing GTA, banging pussies (sex-therapy with prostitutes, for sex offenders; as dumb as it sounds; wouldn't be surprised if UN says the right to sex is every human's basic fundamental human right lol), free food in the prison, somehow makes a psychopath a sunflower, is beyond my comprehension. One would have to be utterly braindead to believe so. Another hypothesis: the dutch politicians and justices are NOT braindead, they're just a little too psychopathic themselves, and being so, concerned for themselves and their own future wife-beating sons. Facts.
Your king is too empathetic and naive, very like the many white people all over the globe who believe in humanity, who believe that every human is deep down a fluffy furry, and to prove so to the world (or themselves), who venture into dangerous territory in the Africas or Arabian towns, only to be lynched by the mobs (many such cases in the news)...
The dutch people who want diversity can go live in Africa or the UAE; in the name of diversity, to advocate that others be put in danger for one's own naivety, is not just foolish, but downright wrong.
The dutch people who have big hearts, who wish to help the desperate immigrants, go do so with your own money. To advocate that others' money be stolen to be donated to one group, is no philanthropy. Theft in the name of charity is just that: THEFT.
+++
To fix the Netherlands in the long run:
  • do away with the laws on racism; keep only the laws against physical harm; words are words; one should only be prosecuted for actions, not threat by words, not threat to act, only action itself. At best, you could exile those deemed threatening (in the short run), but not imprison.
  • do away with the laws against discrimination in the private sector; an entrepreneur who doesn't hire an equally talented woman/newcomeimmigrant/black for a job, would lose his revenue to the one who does; in the free market, wrong biases just aren't solvent, just aren't efficient and profitable. Such feminist equal-pay laws do more harm to women then good; no one wants to hire women anymore, especially for technical roles... Only misogynists pass such laws. Facts.
END WELFARE SOCIALISM:
  • no free healthcare for nobody,
  • no free housing for nobody,
  • no state-funded pension for nobody,
  • no child-care subsidies for nobody,
  • etc.
+++
PRIVATIZE THE STATE:
  • with defence (international and internal) as the only service of the state of Netherlands, privatize such an entity; privatize the Dutch Defence Agency.
  • every citizen gets one (or ten, or thousand; whatever denomination) equal shares of the private entity Dutch Defence Agency.
  • inhabitants of the netherlands be required to pay a head-tax, a fixed tax/payment per person, for the services of international defence (radars, nukes, anti-nukes, iron dome, etc).
  • people be free to sell their shares in the open market. And no, it doesn't make you susceptible to foreign interference/meddling in dutch statehood, on the contrary: state-privatization flips-the-table overnight, making all one's enemies into one's extended friends. Not only is the amount of money needed to become the majority shareholder quite high, but, upon putting so much money in, (an amount of money only sensible people get to have), any sensible actor is incentivized to not mess up and keep peace in one's stock, not hijack one's earnings, and just reap the dividents. Very like the Bitcoin/Monero POW incentives for major-miner.
  • no trade tarrifs. Trump thinks an equal trade-tax for countries which charge a trade-tax with the US, is based. It's not, but it's better than most's beliefs, so okay. But, if one is to be serious, then no, Austrian Economists would never support such a scheme, for the simplest of reasons: selfishness. If Trump (and any country) is to be selfish enough, they should realize that zero-trade-tarrifs for all countries is the thing that makes one prosper, regardless of how much they be taxing us. Mises has said it a million times: war begins when trade ends. So no trade tarrifs whatsoever. Physical/existential security be the only service and concern of a state. Leave it to the dutch people (and private source-auditing firms) to not buy goods from products sourced from child-labouRussians/whatever. The scandenavian madness of One-Family, with the president as the country's daddy, is ludicrous! People are grown ups; they can make their own decisions.
  • replace the ill notion of democracy with shareholder democracy.
  • the CEO/president, in power only as long as they stay popular with the state's shareholders.
+++
PRIVATIZE THE TOWNS:
  • every town becomes a gated-community (with or without actual physical gates).
  • every home-owner of such a town gets an equal number of shares in that community-stock (Citystate of Amsterdam, for example).
  • dressing code (public nudity allowance), pollution/negative-externality laws (some with very strict noice-pollution laws, some lenient and affordable ones), traffic rules (bicycle exceptions, lanes, etc), architecture code and rules, all be the liberties of the city-state to decide upon.
  • the only punishment a city-state be able to give people be: monetary fine, deducted from the prepaid lock-in fund, or, when it gets empty, eviction/exile from the city-state, free to move in to some cheaper lenient one in the Netherlands or elsewhere.
  • no city-state could "imprison" people. A city-state which forbids abortion, cages pregnant women, preventing them from access to healthcare, would be thus unconstitutional.
  • every city-state-resident be required to pay a policing-tax/fee; more protected towns have higher fees. Towns with more immigrants, requiring a well-funded police, for a bigger police force, to keep the people safe, would thus be more expensive, more inefficient, and it would thus only be a matter of time that the low-risk-tolerance Dutch populace segregate and buy up the city-stocks and even buy up the properties of the selling-immigrants-in-need-of-money-to-pay-their-state-tax-or-get-exiled, and vote to exile the immigrant population from their towns. All entrepreneurial. Mises knew it all in advance; he knew that the supreme notion of private-property was complete and enough, that it needed no exceptions for such immigration problems. Leftist liberals who are blindly pro-immigration shouldn't call themselves liberals; they're merely leftists, and they're wrong. In the liberal framework of private property, immigration is NEVER a problem that even needs addressing! Hail Von Mises. Ultimately, it all boils down to the entrepreneurial utilitarian benefits of lower policing costs and at a much higher safety-level that come from barring violent races from one's towns, benifits that ultimately pale the compromises in cheap-labour (that the immigrants provide) or the slightly higher shipping costs of buying such products of cheap-labour from a thousand miles afar. The idiots in the dutch parliament and the businessmen who pretend like without all this cheap labour their economy would collapse and they'd be in losses, are misguiding. Shipping costs are already low enough; the inefficiencies of slavery over willful employment and low shipping costs is what defunded slavery; you would be better off buying goods from Africa than having Africans in your own country making those goods at your doorstep. Instead, free trade cross-borders should be encouraged and cherished.
As for oppression and foreign wars, if you can't help a people defend their lives and territory by military and financial aid (funded from private charities), don't pretend to help by taking in refugees either, most of whom are, by the very definition of how things work, often the worst of the stock; the average good empathetic african/muslim/indian doesn't want to loot away someone's prosperous country. The good ones never even cry for help to begin with, and most of them are within your borders already: the native Dutch too afraid to express their fear of immigrants; heed to their cries and help them first instead.
+++
REFURNISH DOMESTIC SPACES:
  • cameras in every registered home; totally very economical, heck, a billionaire could fund it all out of his own pocket. Mass survillience isn't a concern because it's not impossible to design a black-box encryption protocol with multi-signature encryptions which can only be decoded if all the parties (you, your wife, and the state) provide their keys to decode the video feed. Zero-knowledge-sharing sorcerry whereby keys don't get disclosed to any party either.
  • the right to discriminate. It's the home-owner's right to dictate who gets to visit inside and who doesn't, whether he/she discriminates on the basis of skin colour or hair colour. In fact, the right to discriminate is as important as the right to free speech, and mutually dependent on each other. One has every right to discriminate who one marries based purely on their race! One has every right to befriend people based on their race. And so does an employer when hiring. To say otherwise and pass anti-discrimination laws is no less discriminatory; just discriminatory in a certain cunning state-sponsered way, for a select few's advantage. An argument can be made that, given how many white women only date big black guys, such anti-discrimination laws would hurt them so-called minorities as much, if not more.
  • corporal punishment of children (or women/men) be illegal.
  • no-caging law. One cannot cage someone in one's house without their consent. So, husband denying wife her freedom to abort be first degree violence, no different from switching the button on an electric chair, or pulling the trigger of a gun.
  • gun laws up to the private property's owner. No home owner would wany guests to carry guns inside, prolly. As for city-state's rules on gun-ownership inside households, that's a purely entrepreneurial matter:
fines for owning a gun, disincentivizing gun ownership, has built-in unenforcability; criminal always carries a gun (which can even be 3d printed at home these days), but overall, fewer guns in the public, so fewer rage fights becoming lethal, less money needed to manage the populace for the police, so lower tax/fee,
vs
legal to own a gun in wild spaces, illegal in private spaces (like malls, homes, schools) as per private wish, with metal checks; more guns, higher tax to manage, but ability to defend oneself from criminals carrying guns.
The latter is better imo. Those who think the former is better, can opt in and live in such city-states. What there cannot be is: a sentence for just owning a gun. Only monetary fine or eviction from the city-state; a sentence would be unconstitutional as per the theory of actions-ultimate-judgement, not words, not threats, not gun ownership, not genes, not mental disorders, only actions. There's no better simulation substitute than the real world; all else predictions are merely probabilistic, and when people get imprisoned for mere threats, such predictions are doomed to become ultimately baseless and divorced from reality.
+++
REFORM YOUR CONSTITUTION:
  • Make Ludwig Von Mises your constitution's founding-grandpa. Base the code to rule by, on his magnum opus Human Action.
  • Besides the theoretical basings, short readable constitution that's basically a consent-form that every citizen consents to; consent to be rescued when drowning, consent to be operated on by doctor when unconscious, consent to be arrested for suspicion and inquiry (?), consent to be punched when resisting arrest (which no one would sign to, so no punching people EVER, especially in the name of law enforcement).
The idea is, it's a matter of selecting between explicit consent (consent denied unless explicitly granted) vs implicit consent (consent granted unless explicitly revoked); the former allows for illegalizing sex with drunk/unconscious people, and even the slaughter of animals (which, though probably an unpopular take even in the Netherlands, is ultimately the right thing to do, but boy oh boy do people hate vegans, and you'd get more support for illegalizing domestic violence (from women and half the men) than you would for illegalizing slaughter, but hey, when was the popular thing ever the right thing to do lol). Even for abortion, explicit-consent-theory (consent-denied-unless-granted) supports abortion in a legal constitutional sense in that the fetus' right-to-exist is denied by default, so the host mother be free to deny its existence and act upon it by aborting.
Much like, the theoretical basing of the judiciary on illegalizing suicide/euthanasia illegalizes extreme bdsm (brain damage) too, and, extrepreneurially speaking, saves many a woman from abuse; legalized lovemaking-in-exchange-for-money but illegalized-extreme-bdsm won't move the abuse underground either, or so my judgement says, for, the poor unfortunate untalented women would have plenty of monetary opportunity in the white sex market, and no such woman would want to go to the underground black market to make money off of her own possible murder; what use is such money if one's dead or braindead; upon a concussion, one's never the same again, one stops enjoying the things one once enjoyed, so the money earned thusly would be a waste too. Then again, I'm guessing you aren't interested in the theoretical philosophical and risk-assessment ideas behind this all, so won't bother with that.
+++
REFORM THE JUDICIARY:
  • base the law code away from the fraudulent brain-dead notion of justice; 'cause, there really is no such thing as justice, as putting someone in their victim's shoes, tit for tat; a psycho could never know how it feels to have his tits cut off, for he doesn't have any to begin with! Even within the same gender, people are different, their ages are different. The earth is always moving through space, never in the same place twice; we're moving through time. It's just impossible to simulate being in another's shoes here on Earth (ignoring the NDE life-reviews in the afterlife lol); it's physically impossible.
  • base the law code away from the fraudulent notion of punishment. Being in a prison, getting free food, is no punishment. Some loners might even enjoy it. Heck, Israeli women released from prison choose to commit petty crimes (like breaking the window of the police vehicle) just to get back in the prison. Prison is often far safer a place, and many feel comfy down there. Heck, even the Singaporean judicial caning is some people's most craved fantasy. Heck, extreme masochists would, rather than finding a psycho, paying them to chop their hands off, then making sure the other person doesn't get prosecuted, find it more effortless, cheaper, more realistic, to rob a bank then get their hands chopped off by the Sharia law enforcers! So really, there's no such thing as a just punishment, cause there's no such thing as a punishment to begin with!
  • base the law code on the two pillars of PREVENTION and COMPENSATION;
  • life sentence for violent people (be it, slapping/punching/stabbing/murdering), to PREVENT it from happening again, to PREVENT the society from such actors;
  • compensation for the victim, proportional to the harm caused, funded by the victimizer's money and forced labour in the prison. Come up with an entrepreneurial figure, 50%, ish, portion of the inmate's income (remote working from the prison), which goes to the victim for compensation. Too high that portion and the inmate might lose the drive to work/be-productive. Psychopathy atrophies over generations when its evolutionarily advantageous opportunities cease to be. Rightful compensation tilts the trade-offs in good people's favour.
  • Proportional compensation. When a man slaps a woman, the damage is a hundread times worse than when a woman slaps a man, and ten times worse than when the same gender slaps the same gender. Not only are men's hands bigger and arms more muscular, but also women's skulls are thinner and more susceptible to concussing. So such laws are not sexist; they're just. This notion called equality has been a menace for women, second only to neo-feminism that advocates fiddling with the free market.
  • Inside prison, with their own earned money, inmates be free to buy TV, stereo, air-conditioning, king-size bed, whatever.
  • ONLY for violent crimes does one be sent to prison, and once sent, to never return.
  • for financial crimes, one be made an economic slave; losing one's 50% income to the victims of one's fraud/whatever. Economic slaves, which, most europeans paying 50% in taxes (and getting back close to nothing in return, thanks to states, by nature, being so inefficient with money), kinda already are, lol.
+++
REFORM THE CAPITAL MARKET:
  • Do away with Limited-Liability. The idiots who call themselves climate activists who think capitalism is the enemy, are just that: idiots. The Koala escaping from wildfire gets comfort in the air-conditioned room that every household today can afford; none of this would be there if it weren't for capitalism. People get to feed and care for millions of stray animals; none of this would be possible without capitalism. Morality, especially charity, is a luxury commodity; something socialists don't get to enjoy. But the fact is, these so called climate activists don't care about animals, don't care about trees, all they care about is this molecule called Carbon Dioxide, because they're stupid, or wose, tesla-fanatics.
  • Replace Limited-Liability with Full-Liability. If Nestle poisons a village or sells lead-laiden food products, or commits a murder, the ones responsible for the violent actions first-hand be convicted of first-degree physical harm, and the shareholders be convicted of third-degree harm, and be made to compensate the victims, whether that requires seizing all their assets (and those of the company) or making them economic slaves for the rest of their lives. Fact is, it is the duty and moral obligation of a shareholder to watch for the actions of the company; negligence, inaction, their primary sin. Buying is supporting; Bill Gates is a moron for being an investor in Monsanto.
There be basically, degrees of freedom:
  • freest citizens
  • economic slaves (losing half their income to victim-compensation),
  • prison inmates (who have compensated fully, now buying luxury goods and mansions in the prison island),
  • prison slaves (losing half their income to victim-compensation),
  • tied prison slaves (who have anger issues, so be somewhat elbow-restrained to prevent them from being violent toward other inmates),
  • solitary-confinement prison slaves (zero reason to do so, yet, Japan does it all the time). Prisoners should be free to socialize, bond together, share a cell together, and these things don't increase the risks of prison-escape either.
Ultimately, life's purpose is to just live, make experiences, form memories, and learn some lessons. Death penalty is just wrong; so is solitary confinement when so many mechanisms exist to prevent violence among inmates via boxing-gloves-handcuffs, teeth-covers, and elbow and knee restrains.
+++
REFORM THE POLICE:
  • No impunity for cops. Cops be help liable for their actions, liable to the law. In fact, more liable.
  • Learn from Prince Machiavelli lol; embrace some Game Theory. Legalize and grant moral impunity to cops who shoot down fellow cops abusing people wrongfully.
Those who think police reforms will never work are stupid; one lone man could make his men commit the organized genocide of 6 million, against the empathetic impulses of the men themselves, and they're saying, well-behaved police is impossible to have? What nonsense! Truth is, the powers that be are utterly inept or themselves psychopathic and fap to the videos of police officers punching women in the face for cursing them. Because the matter of fact is, one needs neither the right kind of people, nor the majority power, to commit acts of good or evil; just a good grip on whatever little power one has. Such a shame that literally no ruler alive knows how to rule.
  • Cops be free to arrest fellow cops for misconduct.
  • Cops (and others) be free to report such psychopathic cops.
  • Samaritan protection laws. It be legal for strangers to beat a wife-beater beating his wife in public, or even, to shoot at a cop abusing someone when making arrest. Maybe even rewarding, in that, when imprisoned and compensated, the victim is free to pass on some share of her compensations to her savious who risked their well-being to save her.
In fact, no sociologist worth his salt would deny that women were safer and more protected from psychopaths and better off ten thousand years ago than in today's anonomyous mega societies; something even Ted Bundy alluded to. Sex as payments in ancient times lol, and David Friedman even hypothesizes that that's how and why women evolved concealed ovulation lol.
  • for crimes like traffic law violation, no arresting and car-chases; the said person be sent a notice to appear in a court all by themself instead.
  • city-state's domestic-law-enforcing cops be split into two teams:
  • benign cops should not carry guns, instead, be wearing funny-looking non-intimidating bulletproof body suit and helmet and be carrying mancatchers, handcuffs, legcuffs; autistic people or psychopathic people never be hired, only those with very sharp social skills, and be trained to read social cues, to be funny, to crack jokes, make people laugh, break fights peacefully, or, as a last resort, arrest, but with dignity, never insulting the arrested, never judging, and be carrying those arrested on a bed instead of making them walk with their hands cuffed, which could be dangerous for drunk drivers, old people with arm pain, etc.
  • gun-violence-control cops carry guns, but should only be deployed for gun-violence, wherein they might have to shoot (tranquilizers or bullets) to neutralize a gun-weilding madman.
Giving people unrestricted licence to kill is dangerous. No cops are better than bad cops. Just like no laws are better than bad laws whereby the average woman acting in self-defence gets sentenced to 20 years for killing her man, while a (drunk) man killing his wife gets 2 years. And that's a fact; women get five times longer sentences for homocide than men, in the US. And the average sentence for proven domestic violence cases is: a few weeks behind bars, with the possibility of parole and bail. Talk about feminism running rampant.
Some entrepreneurial suggessions:
  • half the cops' income be locked in a conditional account, sorta a pension fund, which they lose entirely if they commit a crime on duty. Afterall, cops are petty puppet people too, who can be controlled by money just as neatly as any other.
  • of the remaining half, half be conditional on the basis of being useful. Lazy cops who do nothing don't get that, and his employer be loosing more (from his allowance package; the more savings, the more his/her bonus) by design too, by hiring more useless cops without as much of a need in a neighbourhood. For making false arrests, arresting innocent people without reason, the cop be fined and the fine be handed to the person arrested wrongfully.
  • like in Georgia, for misconduct (groping women, etc) or for taking bribes, the whole batch and the batch-leader (employer; sergent; whatever) be fired. Thus, sergents have every incentive to check for psychopathy (MRI tests, whatever), past history, beforehand, when hiring a cop.
+++
EDUCATE CHILDREN:
  • corporal punishment be illegal,
  • children who can pass language/literature test be full acting citizens, free to buy shares and vote in shareholder meetings,
  • exploiting the power of the default to fiddle in the free-market of dating, for women's advantage. Why? Entrepreneurial: good laws that make women feel safe attract a surplus of rich happy attractive women who attract rich nice men (which need less police to manage), which means more population, lower expenses, higher dividents for the shareholders of the state!
  • by default, for impregnating someone, whether they go through labour pain or lesser abortion pain, the guy be liable for a payment of 100k to her. [Vasectomies incentivized over pills, traumatic IUDs, fallopian-tying, all of which are unhealthy.]. Regarding science, though paternity tests and gene-sequencings are a blessing, IVF is a curse, and a woman could use a guy's skin dust for gametogenesis via stem-cell technology and impregnate herself with such artificial cum and the jury wouldn't know... Big gray zone.
  • the mother gets the custody of the baby, always. Up to her to give up the custody to him or someone else if she feels so.
  • artificial wombs be fully legal. It's utter pure hypocracy to advocate against external human-fetus-growth in labs past 7 days, in a world where slaughtering full grown animals, hunting them for fun, killing even SUPERIOR animals like Orcas, their entire families, baiting their mothers with their baby-whale tied in a fishing-net, is all legal. Artificial wombs are already fully viable, there's no scientific hurdle preventing them from being deployed, only legal. Regardless, for logistical reasons, I can bet many countries would be more than happy to adopt such technology in a decade. Only a matter of time.
  • though every child deserves a female mother for none can love one like a woman does, it's something for culture to enforce and normalize, and for self-conscience to make gay couples consider a nanny/3rd-partner, not legal interventions.
  • baby becomes an acting individual upon 3 years old, or whenever he can speak/read/write fluently and pass language tests, and has to read and sign the constitution or face eviction lol. Prodigies thus at an advantage in the money game 'cus they can start investing early on, unlike the current one which renders races which sexually mature before or at the legal age of 18 at an advantage over those who mature much later. Lol nevermind.
  • up until the baby becomes an actor, animal-protection laws (or more specifically, pet-protection) laws should apply on the baby: no violence, no murder, unless in self-defence (i.e., almost never), no medical negligence, no abandoning the baby. For medical negligence or abandoning the baby, no sentencing, only blacklisting the said caretaker from future reproductive baby-care, so not allowed in kindergartens, schools, baby-spaces, and genetically blacklisted.
  • criminals in prison should get genetically blacklisted. Eugenics is not a bad idea; it's the state that should stay out of it, except for the clensing of criminal genes. A criminal's entire descending-tree shuld get blacklisted; said violent criminal's children either get sterilized or promise to not procreate or get evicted. Gene banks be legal; culture should normalize borrowing the genes of (jewish/dutch) geniuses and raising their babies via IVF.
The selfish man doesn't have sex; he clones.
Why mix your genes with someone so different, of the opposite sex, despite being better than oneself. The fact that people have sex and choose good pretty intelligent partners unrelated to themselves, when compounded, is the same as adopting pure Jewish babies. Even Jews are distant cousins to all anyway. Heck, adopt orcas. Either black or white; clones or orcas; ignoring clone mutations (7 mutations per generation, I think), the latter, survival of the group over oneself, is a better strategy and thus more selfish a strategy, whereas the former is doomed to fail, at least for humans, and is only seen in ants which can afford a thousand kids and an epic one-in-a-thousand style selection pressures. Even if that's how superior alien societies operate, even in the latter case, most (worker ants) be raising the royal princes/princesses anyway; raising the babies of mathematical geniuses is not that different. Gene banking (positive eugenics) would speed evolution exponenetially!
  • child-care payments. By default, the guy be liable to maternal-care payments to the mother.
  • state-ensured child-care and pregnancy-payments to the mother. Even if the guy defaults/can't-pay, the state pays the mother and the state extorts the due from the guy in private/court. Mother always gets paid. Guy thus has no grudges against the mother, only the state. Such an arrangement reduces the chances of domestic or hate/revenge violence against the mother.
  • prenups can be used to sway away from this defaults and arrange for custom scenarios.
  • full liability for the baby/pet's actions. If your pet/baby hurts someone seriously, you be liable for full monetary compensation and economic slavery; you also lose your pet/baby-keeping licence.
  • no impunity for acting children (post 3 years of age who have passed the tests) for commiting crimes. Schools should only accept acting-children, not babies. If your child punches another child on the head in school, he gets tried as an adult acting actor. Incentivizes parents to inculcate values of conviction to non-violence in their kids, if they wish to send them to schools and public places. If your babies are violent, postpone the language-comprehension test and constitution-signing and keep them at home; don't put other's kids at risk. American schools are a hellscape. Not only is segregation in schools outlawed, kids have legal impunity, so of course, (black) psycho bullies roam free and abound.
  • full head-tax per baby. From day 1.
+++
DO AWAY WITH SOCIAL SECURITY:
  • Instead, private insurance companies can replace most of the services of social-security.
  • An insurance package of 100k, insurance against homeless, whereby, once deposited, the company invests it in long term assets, compounds it with every passing day, and should one become bankrupt, one should be able to use such a Social-Security-Number to buy rent of up to 20$/day, food up to 10$/meal, three meals a day, for as long as one lives. Or pooled insurance based on average bankrupcy risk statistics, for much lower premium.
  • Likewise, health insurance, bough from private insurance companies.
  • For babies, an insurance package of orphan-insurance, so, should the parents die in a car crash or whatever, the insurance company pays its head-tax, pays for its orphanage fee, its schooling and medical expenses, etc.
  • No, none, zero, nil whatsoever, restrictions/laws/rules on insurance companies. Hans Herman Hoppe is right on how messy and ridiculous the laws have made the insurance market into. Of course, if an insurance company defaults on its promises, it, like with all Full Liability Companies, should get scavenged along with its shareholders. But other than that, no forcing inclusion of fringe groups in insurance pools over such insurance companies.
+++
TRANS-CONTINENTAL COLONY
  • bribe some local leader and arrange for a colony in Africa whereupon to dump those unable to pay the taxes (the poor immigrants, for the most part; the dutch poor can be saved by private charities funding their head-tax) and those barred from dutch city-states (non-dutch).
  • in the long run, deport them to whichever country they be willing to go, whichever be willing to accept them.
+++
That's it. And just like that, you'd have fixed the Netherlands, and, the world being a mere copycat mirror-complex of stupid politicians (except Wilders) unable to think for themselves, only learning from other's experiences, very like the trickling down of monarchies after the French Revolution like a domino falls, just like that, you'd possibly have fixed the whole world! If the world sees from the Dutch exemplary example of privatization of statehood and follows suit, that would singlehandedly save humanity from poverty (socialism), war (tradelessness), and immorality (dictatorships like in Iran where morality police kills girls who don't wear proper dresses). The Dutch were the example of free-trade and privatization once before, they can do it again too.
Geert Wilders is the only hope.
Milei, being so totally anti-abortion, is an utter disgrace in the name of an Austrian Liberal; should have been aborted before he was even born.
Mises was, is, and forever will be, PRO-CHOICE.
That's right, I just said it. And any liberals who are pro-life are fake liberals who pretend to be liberals but are at the core, braindead or worse, psychopaths.
Nicholas Sarwark doesn't talk about abortion (to stay nice to both groups, when actually, that just makes him an idiot who'd get votes from neither unless he takes a stance; classic demogogue),
Ron Paul is very very against abortion too, his whole lineage sucks,
Justin Amash outright opposes it,
it's so funny, cause, Mises, Ludwig Von Mises, the guy he so likes to quote, himself was very pro-choice, and said the process of becoming sentient, becoming a consenting individual of the society, is "gradual", doesn't happen overnight, that a fetus is not the same as an adult, and above all, was a UTILITARIAN who believed in family-planning at the family-level as per the family's economic potential and incentives and time-preference, who vouched against state-sponsered eugenics and child-subsidies as population control measures, who believed in women being more of an acting being, was the champion of economic freedom for women, who in his own personal life recognized the entrepreneurial value bargain in prefering these talented undervalued women, who was the biggest feminist and women's liberator in the history of manking (equal contestent with Morgentaler, another Jew)! Amash's (and others') preaching Mises wholly, saying that their views are practically indistinguishable from Mises's, then opposing abortion, is like killing people "in the name of God the creator"; it's pure blasphemy, heck, worse than that, for Mises is above God, and these false preachers shall be judged harshly by Mises' immortal spirit. *inhales lol.
Not all races are equal. Sexual and survival stretegies dictate the differences. The muslims have been murdering the intelligent (dissident/scientific) and beautiful (emo boys/girls) among themselves for more than a millenia; no wonder they've gotten so retarded. The Chinese are apathetic people, bred to obey, war, and kill, without remorse; free-thinking pricipled dissidents all but extinct among them. Evolutionary psychologists who think that war is good for the genes are idiots; sure, war is good for genes, but peace is better. Heck, EVERYTHING is good for the genes. The genes are set on a track to evolve forwards, and they'd only do so, and abominations like Islam are mere incidental dips in a more or less upward-rising curve. The least-warring greeks were the most feminist, the highest longevity-people, the most nicest, until war struck Europe too.
The Dutch are one of the best races in the world, second only to the Jews who have significantly higher IQ, higher empathy, the lowest domestic violence and physical violence rates, and the cleanest past history (never practiced witchhunts, and despite brutal punishments legal in Judiasm, never practiced them; it's like, despite judiasm, the Jews never gave in to barbarianism; such noble genes; never committed genocides), way better than the forever stained dutch history of the witchhunts which took the lives of some 300 innocent women... Still, the Dutch are better than the rest, by a huge margin. Not to mention the Dutch are the most good-looking tall handsome honest people in the whole world. Unpopular opinion but, me thinks Geert Wilders is the most handsome man ever; boy would I pay to suck his cock lol. Even an imaginary anime character better looking than Wilders is too wild an idea to be plausible lol. Lol I literaly saw him in my dream yesterday on the second day of discovering him and binge-watching his videos, lol.
The Dutch people need saving. You're already very few in numbers; intermarriage is the Dutch's biggest existential threat; extinction by dissolution. A Dutch State is the only possible saviour; people mostly only fall in love with someone within a mile from them; a state wherein most (if not all) are Dutch, would thus preserve the dutch genes.
A free-market championing privatization-proposing Geert Wilders wouldn't need to resort to Islam to achieve the end result all Dutch people desire: a safe and prosperous Netherlands for the Dutch.
Thanks.

2024.05.04 10:49 thespidersthread The possibility of me being autistic is haunting me now that its been mentioned by a few people in my life.

Im so sorry for the long post but this has been eating into me for a while now and I really don't know where else to address this.
I also just want to mention that I do not want to self diagnose myself or assume anything and if these are all unrelated to autism or this post offends you in any way, please forgive me.
Hi, around 8 months ago when i first started university, I made a really close friend, the only one person i could really be myself around here (like a safe person) [i moved for university]. We immediately clicked and were ourselves around each other and about 2 weeks- a month into the friendship she asked me if I was autistic. I said no and asked why she thought so. She told me that she noticed i do a lot of stuff that seem off to her in that sense like :
  1. Being able to listen to the same song on repeat for hours or days on end
  2. Having always had to script my conversations (like introduction when i moved to a new school, phonecall to order food), and learn certain phrases or general responses to other phrases. If i make new friends who use different phrases I'm unfamiliar with i will see how other people or they respond to those types of phrases and then learn them and use them myself. Sometimes if someone texts me a phrase I've never heard of ill go through all my other chats or groupchats in general to see what people would have or have responded to similar or the same phrase and then use those and if i cant find it ill go onto google and if that doesn't work either ill just ask my friends and family. I was also always labelled the shy kid and evennow especially in group situations i tend to just sit out of conversations completely and not talk or contribute at all unless I'm directly asked a question or something because its just easier that way (i do feel inhumanly awkward in group situations) however unfortunately this also lead to this girl pointing it out once in a group which caught me off guard and only made me shutdown further
  3. Having to sit symmetrically opposite her anywhere because if were not directly opposite each other (if i feel like the midpoints of our bodies arent in line - i call it a longitudinal plane - it feels like the world is wrong and uneven). This is especially excruciating when i need to start work on my computer or sit somewhere because i always have to take a while to adjust myself into a plane that is symmetrical and feels right
  4. Having sensory issues with clothes growing up and even now - certain textures like sequence, or it really depends cuz sometimes even cotton feels wrong on my skin depending on the clothing item and then i just wont wear it because now i feel like tearing my skin off. This also applies to if my clothes don't sit right on me - it could be a shirt I've worn a thousand times but sometimes it just feels a little bit tighter some places or just off and then i have to adjust and make it right or just change the shirt or clothing item all together. This also applies to food - i absolutely cannot stand mushy textures or even changes in textures for certain food like oats to a point where i will only buy one brand and eat it repeatedly cuz i know i like that texture and it feels safe and good. I also realised I've been eating the same 2 meals for over a year now and its pretty embarrassing.
  5. Once we were in a mall and they started playing forest noises and my friend found it calming but i was severely disturbed and told her that its because i can hear like 80 different mini noises in this one big sound (i can hear the smallest and farthest noises immediately and sometimes it bothers me because i can hear the clock ticking and now I'm distracted because the ticking is so loud and never ending and it makes me wish i could stop time all together)
  6. I have to walk up and down in my room (in a set linear path that i set for myself) in the morning before i leave for uni and before i got to bed (cant go to bed without at least an hour of this) and also in between tasks. I could finally get up to use the washroom in between my work (i like to wait till my bladder physically hurts for some reason or till i feel like I've earned it idky) and when i come back i cant sit back to work without walking for at least 20 mins. I literally wake up 2 hours before i really need to for uni just to be able to walk and i thought this was normal because its calming. She also noticed I do this thing with my fingers where I like to trace my nails with my thumb all the time but I thought that was normal? Sometimes if I know I'm going to be doing something super nerve-wracking I like to keep my nails long and press them into my palm really hard because the pain kinda calms me down.
  7. She thinks its weird that before i eat something i will segregate and eat my food from "least satisfactory bite" to "most satisfactory bite" or when I'm eating something with slices or diff pieces like a pizza i have to eat from smallest to biggest slice or the world feels wrong. Sometimes if I'm eating a frozen pizza or sm i will purposely cut the slices a bit unevenly so its easier for me to tell smalest to biggest. I always eat my sandwiches crust first (fully) the inside and stick icecream that have those chocolate layers in the same way - always full outer layer and then inner layer or its wrong.
  8. Once we wanted to divide notes for one of our tests and she told me to start from the 9th topic onwards and that made me feel like the whole number order is now disrupted and that not how things are supposed to be so i did her part of the notes too so ic ould start from no 1.
  9. I had horrible separation issues from my mother as a child to a point where it was hard for my mom to get me to school or even social gathering because i would hate any sort of party or group gathering as a child to a point where id cry and itd end with my mom and i sitting out of it together. - this is actually the reason that when i was a kid my aunt in one of her raging sessions accused me of being the reason her child is autistic. Her child is diagnosed with autism and is non-verbal.
  10. I have been picked on by classmates and even teachers literally since playschool (or pre-kg as they'd call it where i was from) -> which my friend said is apparently a sign? I was never taught how to read by my mom but i could read by the age of 3 and i just learnt by picking up phrases from the kids shows id watch and apply them to my books. Also my mom would read to me everyday so i just picked it up through that too.
  11. All my friendships since kindergarten were me having this one safe person that i follow around everwhere kinda like a mother duck? This also resulted in me not being able to end my friendship with my best friend in highschool because i was so comfortable with her (even her bad treatment towards me) and i was scared id never be close enough with someone else or no one else would accept me like she did (luckily i recently discovered that's not true)
  12. I always have too much anxiety before trying new things that i need someone there to be with me and help me along (even basic life tasks like withdrawing money for the first time or going to the doctor by myself - sometimes this results in me putting really important errands off for months on end even though i feel horrible about it but it feels paralyzing when I think of actually going to get that job done). However, I've suffered with anxiety in general whether that is to leave the house (since i was a child - way before covid too), especially in crowds.
  13. Back in school when I would write in notebooks (thankgod I use an iPad now) if there was something I thought was even a little off (like the curve of my g or the dot on my i - god forbid a spelling mistake) I would rip the whole page off and rewrite it as many times as I'd have to for it to be perfect.
  14. Skin picking - especially face and back to a point where sometimes my entire face gets red and inflamed and i might've even popped a pimple or 2 and could be bleeding but would still continue.
Now the thing is i keep denying it even now but for as long as i can remember since i was a child and since my aunt accused me my mother would say she was proud of me for outgrowing my weird autistic like behaviours as a child like how she taught me to make eye contact and actually say hello to people so i don't look mean.
And the weird thing is a week ago I was having a normal conversation with one of my friends flatmates who was actually diagnosed with autism when he was a kid, and he straight up asked me at the end of it - "you're a little bit autistic arent you?" and i was like huh??? no I'm not and i asked him why he thought so and he said he could just feel it. At this point my other friend is convinced I'm autistic even though i don't think so but i don't know. I want to ask my therapist about this but i don't want to look like a poser or like I'm just begging to be diagnosed with something you know? I just want to know why the only girl who has ever really seen or heard of my behaviours is convinced I'm neurodivergent ( i have never revealed these habits of mine or explicitly behaved this way in front of others and tend to hide it for some subconscious reason). Please some advice would be highly appreciated and I'm really sorry for ranting :)

2024.05.04 01:09 The_A_Man__ Dutch Microstate Of Netherlands.

  • no free healthcare for nobody,
  • no free housing for nobody,
  • no state-funded pension for nobody,
  • no child-care subsidies for nobody,
  • etc.
  • base the law code on the two pillars of PREVENTION and COMPENSATION;
  • life sentence for violent people (be it, slapping/punching/stabbing/murdering), to PREVENT it from happening again, to PREVENT the society from such actors;
REGARDING CHILDREN:
From day 1.
Thanks.

2024.04.19 08:05 Maryjane42069 Educational PC game 90s /2000s

Every play the rugrats movie or those Tonka game as a kid? It's like that where the whole game was just a sequence of mini games. You'd start with the red themed coal collection by solving I think math problems. The only other one I remember was a purple themed band game, I believe the drummer was the icon or featured in menu selection. However that was for upper grade, never got to play it, no clue how it worked.
Unfortunately I don't remember much more than that, I believe one game had a yellow theme but that doesn't help much.
Played in kindergarten around turn of millennium and that was the last I saw of it. Deff a standalone game I don't think it was flash or Java or whatever web based standard it was back then deff don't think I used a browser to play.
100 percent ran on windows I do remember that.

2024.04.15 11:47 Long_Glass573 My boss won't let me come to work if the lab manager doesn't come

I'm a bio-med engineering and biology BsC student in my final year, and I started working part-time for this lab that researches some kind of cancer as a research assistant. The position was published as a student position, 2 days a week, 6-8 hours every day, and hourly pay of ~11$. I have no previous experience, and this pay is common for entry-level student positions in this field.
We agreed that when I start working, we will sign a contract for 3 months as an "adjustment period," meaning to see if I'm fitting for the job. In this time I will learn the basics of what they want me to do, such as cell culture handling (splitting, seeding, medium change), extraction of protein for WB, and RNA extraction for sequencing.
3 months have passed during which I was following the lab manager in everything she did. She explained everything and at some point let me do things on my own as she watched me doing so. At this point, after over 3 months, I feel like I've learned the basics.
The problem is, my boss (the lab owner) won't let me come work when the lab manager doesn't come. The manager is a mom of little kids, and it happened twice that one of them was sick. Therefore, she couldn't come. This is a good point to add that we also agreed on specific days where I would come because of my degrees classes' schedule (in terms of availability). I was completely transparent about it from the beginning, and anyway the position was set for 2 days a week. Anyway, on those days she couldn't come, she only let me know when I was already on the way there (for me it's at least 1.5 hours in each direction using public transportation, as I'm a student and can't afford to drive there). Though she said I can do this and that in the lab because I learned those things and if there's a problem I can call her to ask. So far so good.
I text my boss about the situation and that I'm already on the way. He tells me to go home because he won't be there to supervise me. I went home and wasted 3 hours for traveling for no reason.
The second time it happened I figured he was already annoyed with me. But what can I do? It takes so long to get there that I have to leave early to be on time. I decided to text the lab manager every time before I even begin to get ready for work and therefore I come an hour later every time. If she doesn't come one day, I also can't come, and I also can't come on another day instead because I have classes on other days! That way I lose hours and eventually get payed less.
It was especially annoying this week since I live in Israel and we've has the missile attack from Iran, due to which they canceled schools and kindergarten for the week so of course the lab manager didn't know if she could come or not. I already missed 2 days of work because of this. There is no more emergency but the school system was a mess and only tomorrow probably I would probably be able to come to work.
In general, I'm annoyed that I don't have my own responsibilities (except from ordering lab equipment for the lab like once a week and it takes 10 mins), the boss gives me tasks like "organize the drawers" "make a list of the equipment in the lab", like why am I even here? Although one day I did extract proteins on my own and prepared them for WB but usually I don't do my own work.
Another "surprise" with this work is that I'm limited to 40 hours a month. This contradicts the terms that were published for this position (6-8 hours a day, 2 days a week, is a minimum of 48 hours a month). Also, my payment is delayed by a month every time. I got January's salary on March, and February's salary on April. (Here we get payed every month for the previous month's work, until the 10th of the current month) so they owe me 1 salary.
It's really rough right now especially for a student with no experience to find a job. I aimed for an engineering student position job but others have experience and probably interview better than me so I landed on this one.

These 12 Movies will Leave Netflix in April
March has come to an end, and April will bring a new batch of movies to Netflix, and there will also be some movies that will leave Netflix for various reasons, so here's a roundup of some of the classic movies that will be leaving in April, and if there's something you like, you can watch it before it leaves, or you can use Kigo Netflix Video Downloader to download the movies that are leaving to your computer, so you can watch them whenever you want.

‘The Nice Guys’ (April 8)
Ryan Gosling is having a bit of a moment — he may not have won the Oscar for best-supporting actor, but he won the Oscars telecast for his performance of “I’m Just Ken” — and those who prefer the intense actor in his loosey-goosey comic mode would be wise to check out this 2016 comedy-mystery. Gosling stars as a bumbling private detective who teams up with a bone-breaker-for-hire (an uproariously gregarious Russell Crowe) to solve a convoluted missing person case. The co-writer and director is Shane Black, who helped popularize the buddy-action comedy with his “Lethal Weapon” screenplay, and subsequently perfected it here and in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Keep an eye out for the up-and-comers Angourie Rice (“Mean Girls”) and Margaret Qualley (“Drive Away Dolls”) in supporting roles.
‘Rush’ (April 15)
Ron Howard spent a fair amount of his youth appearing in vroom-vroom car movies like “American Graffiti,” “Eat My Dust” and “Grand Theft Auto” — the latter marking his feature directorial debut — so it’s not surprising that he was drawn to this thrilling dramatization of the mid-70s glory days of Formula One racing. He tells the story of a rivalry between two of the sport’s stars: James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl), a study in contrasts, the matinee idol and the ugly duckling, the party boy and the teetotaler. The nuanced screenplay by Peter Morgan (who penned Howard’s earlier “Frost/Nixon,” and would go on to create “The Crown”) mines the complexities of their relationship, while the thrilling race sequences effectively place us in the driver’s seat through the hairiest moments of trading paint.
‘Synchronic’ (April 15)
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead make brainy sci-fi pictures, small-scale indie movies like “The Endless” and “Something in the Dirt” that traffic in ideas over special effects. This 2019 effort was the closest they’ve come to a play for the cinematic mainstream, casting Marvel mainstay Anthony Mackie and “Fifty Shades” star Jamie Dornan in the leading roles. But their signature style and thematic occupations remain thankfully intact in this tale of two New Orleans paramedics who discover the mind-bending effects of a new designer drug. The central conceit is ingenious, but the filmmakers don’t just rely on its cleverness; there are genuine, human stakes, and the payoff is refreshingly poignant.

‘The Hateful Eight’ (April 24)
Quentin Tarantino followed “Django Unchained” by again riffing on the venerable Western genre, this time by crossing it with the Agatha Christie-style “locked room” mystery. He populates his story, of a poisoning in a tucked-away haberdashery during a deadly blizzard in the post-Civil War West, with faces familiar from his previous films, including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen; they’re joined by an Oscar-nominated Jennifer Jason Leigh, in a particularly foul-mouthed and ill-tempered mood. Tempers flare, blood is shed and vulgarities fly in typical Tarantino fashion, but in its unflinching portraiture of the racial hostilities of a splintered country, the work is by no means exclusive to its period setting. (Also leaving on April 24: the Netflix-exclusive “The Hateful Eight Extended Version,” which adds footage and breaks the film up into four one-hour episodes.)
‘Malignant’ (April 26)
James Wan started out directing bone-crunching horror pictures like “Saw,” “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” before going mainstream with “Furious 7,” “Aquaman” and its sequel. Between those two superhero flicks, he directed this gloriously unhinged, go-for-broke horror thriller, in which a young woman (Annabelle Wallis) is haunted by visions of grisly murders — visions that prove to be true, and suggest some sort of a psychic link to the brutal killer. If that sounds slightly peculiar, boy, just you wait. The screenplay by “M3GAN” writer Akela Cooper (with story assists from Wan and Ingrid Bisu) is an admirably unrestrained trip into the genre’s wilder corners, full of inventive kills, bananas story turns and cuckoo supporting characters, all rendered in a baroque, hurdy-gurdy visual style.
‘13 Going on 30’ (April 30)
Just in time for its 20th anniversary on April 23, this likably goofy and endlessly charming romantic comedy is, essentially, a gender-swapped remake of the beloved “Big,” this time with Jennifer Garner as a 13-year-old whose birthday wish to be “30 and flirty and thriving” unexpectedly comes true. Garner is warm and endearing, a loose-limbed wonder at capturing the awkward gawkiness of a teen trapped in an ill-fitting body, while recent Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo finds just the right mixture of confusion and sweetness as her childhood friend who’s become quite the babe.

‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ (April 30)
Fannie Flagg’s best-selling book “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” got the big-screen treatment in 1991, via director Jon Avnet (“Up Close and Personal”). It tells two stories: Kathy Bates is a housewife who finds escape from her unsatisfying life in the stories a nursing home resident (Jessica Tandy) tells her about her hometown; Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson are among the residents whose yarns she spins. Some of the edges of Flagg’s book have been sanded down to make this cozy sweater of an adaptation, which is regrettable — but as it stands, it’s a lovely film, capably crafted and poignantly played.
‘Twins’ / ‘Kindergarten Cop’ (April 30)
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have put on a stone-faced persona for his breakthrough role in “The Terminator,” but there was always a sly sense of humor to his performances in even his most serious action movies. So it wasn’t a huge stretch when he teamed with “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman to make his first starring comedy, 1988’s “Twins,” alongside Danny DeVito — a broad and sometimes obvious high-concept giggle-fest that is carried considerably by the charisma and chemistry of its leads. It was such a big hit that Schwarzenegger and Reitman re-teamed two years later for “Kindergarten Cop,” which found the star pointedly sending up his own tough-guy image as a bruiser of a big-city cop who goes undercover in a suburban grade school.
‘Mamma Mia!’ / ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ (April 30)
The long-running Broadway jukebox musical, featuring the zippy music of the ’70s pop group Abba, was something of a punchline for New Yorkers, a go-to example of how far the Great White Way had gone in its relentless pursuit of tourist dollars. But the 2008 film adaptation (directed, as the stage production was, by Phyllida Lloyd) is altogether irresistible, offering up the peculiar but undeniable pleasure of heavyweight thespians like Meryl Streep, Stellan Skarsgard and Amanda Seyfried indulging in their inner theater kid. It was such a hit that most of the major players returned a decade later for “Here We Go Again” — and while it doesn’t quite match the frothy pleasures of the original, it does add Cher, and that’s not nothing.
‘Whiplash’ (April 30)
The “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle’s breakthrough feature was this 2014 hybrid of sports movie and musical melodrama, in which a young jazz drummer (Miles Teller) at a Juilliard-inspired music school comes under the tutelage — or, perhaps, the thumb — of a tough-as-nails professor and conductor (J.K. Simmons). It’s a complicated tale, working within an established milieu while simultaneously interrogating it, and grappling with the implications of time-told tales of the sacrifices one must make in pursuit of excellence. Teller is an ideal anchor for such a story, projecting a mixture of both arrogance and uncertainty, and Simmons deservedly won an Oscar for his nightmare-fuel performance as the merciless mentor.

2024.03.24 13:59 ranc1 Unwritten struggles of social anxiety

Not found in CBT and DSM nor self-help books are plethora of hidden social anxiety symptoms. This happens due to Survivorship bias - where only loud and social people are spokesmen for all people suffering from social anxiety, while in the same time - truly socially anxious are silent, muted and censored and secluded due to social anxiety itself. Similar to elephant in the room that nobody can see even though they are big and observable. Or similar to dysfunctional family dynamics where dysfunctional parents (CBT and DSM) are censoring the scapegoat and in the same time allows only the golden child to speak their version of the story.
What I discovered in all CBT self-help books about social anxiety - that social anxiety is described from the place of shyness and high-school problems - which are solved by exposure and talking to a cashier in a supermarket. It is only in one (1) self-help book that I actually read real life problem where a person is stuck in toxic job. The advice was to stand up for oneself (to tell the toxic job well fire me if you don't like my job) and if that does not help that it's best to quit that job. The book doesn't explain what happens if we live in corrupt poor country where all jobs are toxic or there is no other job available for 2, 3 years or more. None of self-help books talked about trauma from the past - and none of the books or resources about social anxiety talked about being stuck and trapped in toxic ambient with toxic people, aka real life. I was convinced that the reason for this ignorance of reality was due to simplicity - so that publisher do not reject the book - because real life problems would make these books extremely fat. Even my reddit forum here - I copy paste all the topic in Word document, and there are 700+ pages by now. So I was convinced that CBT and self help are refusing to talk about real life problems due to Occam Razor - to keep it short and simple. Well - nope. The reason why CBT and DSM are not describing oppression, poverty is because the industry was created by narcissists and entitled people who were born in privilege - so they have no idea what the real life is. All their problems related to mental health are easily solved by money. If they are stuck with toxic family - they simply relocate because they have money to do so. If they are stuck with toxic job and mobbing - they simply quit that job - and poof, the panic and mental health problem is gone from their lives permanently. So CBT and DSM are money business - it is for clients with money. Anyone else who was not lucky to be born with silver spoon in their mouth - will be doomed to be labeled as permanently sick, rejected (ableism part) and pushed into drug program in order to be lobotomized - so that it is not burden to watch or listen, like in any fascist state.
In mid-1990s social phobia was renamed into social anxiety because it is not phobia. Phobias are cured with a mere exposure. With exposure - our panic / stimulation overload symptoms will fade to manageable extent and our worries will go away, once we learn that danger is not present all the time. In social anxiety - when we are stuck with toxic people and inside toxic ambient - this desensitization will simply not work - not because of us - but because of mentally ill aggressive people who are behaving in irrational manner and are dangerous to people around them.
Whereas wealthy people can easily solve this problem of being in contact with toxic people with their money - the rest of us are doomed to be stuck with intrusive people. And then social anxiety will not go away with exposure - so CBT's response to this is that we become drug addicts. I believe psychology is more than drug pushing program. Psychology needs to tell us what to do in such impossible situations like being stuck in corrupt state, in toxic mobbing job, and what to do when we are stuck in toxic ambient of any kind. CBT cannot answer this - because it is ignoring the symptoms in the first place. CBT and DSM are censoring parts related to Complex Trauma due to financial reasons - so that targets of abuse do not flood government financial resources. WHO's ICD-11 fully recognizes CPTSD, while corrupt medical American DSM system blocks information about Complex PTSD. It is much more profitable to drug people and make endless source of profit for pharma mafia by misdiagnosing the masses and turning them into self consuming Self, a zombie controlled by the Elite.
In mid-1990 medical industry investigated social phobia to see how to update DSM with new information. The problem was that socially anxious will never expose themselves to scrutiny and tests - and even DSM says so in their description of social anxiety. Then the only people who turned for social anxiety screening were shy people and narcissists/impulsive borderlines who had enough courage to come to the test and speak their views - which mostly are social mask and fiction. This way - DSM performed Researcher Bias and Survivorship bias - where the true real information about social anxiety was never examined at all - but only skewed spectrum information about social anxiety - found in predatory personalities and confused people who are convinced that they have social anxiety.
This is why psychology is not science - it cannot be. There is no way to measure or investigate the subject - because people are unreliable narrators and there are no tools or machines to measure emotions and feelings and beliefs and sensations - which can change at any second - depending on toxic or healthy ambient settings. Also - this explains why CBT and DSM are not open for feedback - and this is the smoking gun that it is not science. Science is always open for new discoveries and new proofs and criticism and evaluation - which CBT and DSM ironically are not - whereas CBT tries to cure us from the fear of criticism - CBT is immersed in stubborn, rigid thinking, like any person with personality disorder would be.
After all - fear of criticism - it signifies that there is criticism. Normal people do not use criticism. They do not use extreme criticism. Normal healthy sane friendly people try to find solutions, they express their opinion and side of story through a feedback. They do not put other people down. They do not use pathological lying or gaslighting or scapegoating, blame, shame or guilt tripping to censor the other person into silence and obedience. Normal healthy sane people try to find solutions and resolutions. They do not use coercive control in form of criticism to destroy the other person. So the very fact that there is a trauma from criticism is smoking gun, a proof - that social anxiety is not hallucination but real response to real danger. Normal people do not go around destroying other person's identity and core being just for being in disagreement. It is only anti-social, predatory, dangerous people with serious mental status that are doing this. So social anxiety as fear of criticism is reaction to toxic people who are unable to be social, who are unable to discuss, who are rigid and therefore people with personality disorder - that are the true and only cause of social anxiety. We won't feel nor experience social anxiety in healthy settings, in healthy ambient and around normal healthy sane friendly people whom we can trust to share and plan and interact with - without fear of them hurting us just for having a different opinion. Toxic people are hurt and harmed by a different opinion because it shakes their already shaken ego, and because truth is exposing their mask, and because honest opinion is exposing their hidden agenda and scam and hoax and urge to exploit someone. In toxic society - it is normal to be angry and to create hysteria - it will be seen as masculine and macho and strong and confidence, due to Dunning Krueger effect. And in such toxic ambient - abnormal unhealthy anti-social predatory types of people will succeed - whereas normal healthy and sane people will end up with diagnosis of social anxiety and further stigmatized by medical industry build by narcissists. CBT and DSM cannot see all this - because the data for social anxiety is tinted with wrong symptoms that narcissists and shy people provided with. This way CBT and DSM are like delusional paranoid patient that is unable to handle or see reality - and lives in a wrong fantasy confabulated version of reality. And in such setting - any new and contradictory information which reality provides (such as symptoms not found in DSM) are scrutinized and labeled with hyper-cognition and weaponized psychology, as something to reject and not investigate - just because the truth does not apply nor conform to DSM's confabulation.
First let's see how DSM is depicting social anxiety symptoms:
DSM-5 a) Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others. Examples include social interactions (e.g., having a conversation, meeting unfamiliar people), being observed (e.g., eating or drinking), and performing in front of others (e.g., giving a speech). - so there is no mention of expressing our OWN scrutiny to others. This is not mentioned at all here. We are instructed to develop coward personality - someone who is afraid of naughty people, so that we develop victimhood mentality. When we experience stimuli overload, we will behave in accordance to DSM - and believe that we are afraid of receiving scrutiny - and we won't allow ourselves to fight back and tell the facts and truth - because we are brainwashed with DSM to be afraid of being criticized, being in passive stance.
b) The social situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety. - there is no mention what social situations? Family? Kindergarten visit? Visit to botanical garden? Living in slum part of city? Toxic job? Mobbing? Family abuse situations? Scapegoating? Social situations is wide term. Another thing - this list is apparently mistyped on official website (as observed on March 23, 2024): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK519712/table/ch3.t12/
The B is marked as C and C is marked by B. As I understand this is because what was previously thought of less worthy and ranked as C, is in new edition to be taught more important and now it is moved up the ladder to the second place. This means that DSM is changing the importance of symptoms - and this means that DSM is false already. DSM is not science - it is simply disorganized list of statistics - and it is bad idea that we form our personality around it and use it as a reference point for social anxiety.
c) The fear or anxiety is out of proportion to the actual threat posed by the social situation and to the sociocultural context. - There is no mention what happens when sociocultural context in collective denial of emotions where discussing feelings is banned - so there is no context at all.
d) The social situations are avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety. - there is no mention that it is normal and healthy to avoid toxic places, toxic people. Who would not avoid slum part of the city? Drug addicts who steal money from us? Abusers who are violent?
e) The fear, anxiety, or avoidance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. - This is how Martha Mitchel Effect was born. Whistleblower was labeled as impaired - and not the corrupt system where she lived.
f) The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is persistent, typically lasting for 6 months or more.
g) The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or another medical condition.
h) The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is not better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder, such as panic disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, or autism spectrum disorder. - Oh really. How come there is no investigation how High-Functioning Autism is the same as social anxiety? CBT only sees black and white - it sees Autism as one entity, and not as a spectrum. This is Aristotelian logic, it is cognitive distortion and logical fallacy of spitting and seeing anything in life as black or white.
i) If another medical condition (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, obesity, disfigurement from burns or injury) is present, the fear, anxiety, or avoidance is clearly unrelated or is excessive.
x) Specify if: Performance only: if the fear is restricted to speaking or performing in public.
Let's investigate which symptoms of social anxiety are deliberately banned & censored by DSM and CBT, self-help books and social anxiety "coaches". And why.
Emotional shopping. I start the symptoms list with this unwritten symptom of social anxiety because it is related to the history of psycho-analysis, where medical industry was in the service of corporations and marketing - and made huge wealth on selling data about psychology to the corporations. More here: BBC The Century of the Self
When we struggle with toxic people - they will trigger our wounds - and we will attempt to unsuccessfully heal ourselves through money - and spending money on covering up the wounds. This way psychology is weaponized against us. Instead of CBT and DSM explaining us the trauma and wound - CBT will instruct us to consume and to expose and to talk to cashier while we spend our money on corporations. This is how CBT handles psychology issues that we may struggle with - as money profit and consumerism. Instead of warning us that we will be prone to make ourselves poor by wasting our resources on spending money on things we do not need - CBT is encouraging us to spend all our money through "talking to cashiers" advice.
From my own experience - during most of 19 years of working in toxic place, all my paycheck ended up in shopping centres. I do live in corrupt country that is poor and where majority of paycheck must be spend on food - and literally all the money I earned - I spend it on things I do not need or food that made me struggle with unnecessary calories. Even though I did read many self-help books during that period - none of them mention emotional shopping at all. Instead - books and CBT inclined to spend more and more money on products such as books and courses.
Daily activities such as crossing the street. When I needed to cross a street I would feel shame of looking right or left - because when I grew up I was in toxic ambient where being secure and safe was mocked and laughed and labeled as sissy and feminine. Over and over again. Shame culture countries are filled with intrusive people and their intrusive remarks that force the target to conform and be silent and obedient, frozen with shame, guilt and blame. CBT does not mention this culture context at all - shame culture countries, mentally ill people who are intrusive. Young American lady noticed this in 2019:
Young American explained why she left Croatia:
"In Croatia people constantly express intrusive opinion about matters which are none of their business. The most irritating things were rude people." "Often I heard Croats intruding why am I eating something, or commenting about what I wore. There is no such thing in America, we allow people to be what they want to be."
https://poslovni.hlifestyle/amerikanka-napusta-hrvatsku-neucinkovitost-i-birokracija-te-ljudi-koji-nemaju-motiva-za-napredovanjem-u-poslu-358422
Even the internet link does not mention intrusive people in its headline - this intrusive shame culture is masked and ignored as if it is too normal that it is not matter of focus or it does not create any damage in social interactions and trust among people. The headline states that she left Croatia due to inefficiency and bureaucracy and that people are not motivated in their jobs.
This can be dangerous - because of trauma of being ashamed - can make socially anxious person ignore the safety. CBT does not mention this problem/symptom/struggle at all. Instead - CBT is forcing us to make exposure - where with social anxiety trauma we might end up seriously hurt since we carry toxic people messages and operant conditioning lodged inside us.
Weird trivia - I started to write down my dreams - and one of my repetitive dream sequence is being in the street and walking across the crossroad.
Faced with unresolvable situation, Self is destroyed. When faced with some difficult situation, with difficult people, self construct is destroyed. And it needs to be rebuild over again - without me being aware that it is destroyed and without me being aware that I am spending my resources in rebuilding my world from scratch over and over again. I discovered that this is happening only after the discovery of Complex Trauma information - which CBT and DSM are censoring from finding it out. Self - construct of Self - is what we love, what we don't like, it is about expressing oneself, knowing what we need, what we want, what feels good, our preferences - these are all set to automatic default setting usually of making oneself small and not attracting any attention to oneself, not having any plans - because of not knowing what I like and not trying to make big deal about anything is equal to being avoidant and passive, and of course feeling ashamed, guilty and blamed for existing. Anyone gone through narcissistic abuse will identify these easily and know what I am talking about. Toxic people first destroy our construct of Self - because this way we are easy to control and manipulate and we take everything as our fault without making any protest or investigation about what is happening. CBT is not mentioning this - because DSM and CBT are tools of mass control and mass conformity, groupthink and herd mentality - where we are not allowed to have our own ideas, our own conclusions, our own feedback and our own opinion about anything in life. The process of finding over and over again what makes us happy and secure and what we like - is not only exhausting - but with time - we drop awareness about what we like. With frequent exposure to toxic people and toxic ambient - we won't be able to construct anything about Self and instead we will develop codependency and trauma bonding and Victimhood mentality (TIV), learned helplessness.
Not allowed to have anger. With social anxiety we're not aware that the reason why we don't feel anger is not because we are empaths or good people - but because this was conditioned in us while growing up. We experienced punishment when we would express our disagreement over and over again. Now as adults - we react with the same operant conditioning as in childhood - when someone is critical - we experience this as automatic withdrawal into non-anger, non-angry state, where we do not say anything. To a third party - this behavior will appear as people pleasing and fawning and as Negative Politeness - but in reality it is after-effect of ACoA and ACE. ACE is quickly tested online - and CBT does not mention this at all. We can quickly test the trauma in childhood, without login required: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/03/02/387007941/take-the-ace-quiz-and-learn-what-it-does-and-doesnt-mean
Without anger, without inner sense of advocacy - we won't be able to defend ourselves against toxic people. We won't have energy needed to take steps in minimizing contact with toxic people. And staying around toxic people is not healthy. CBT does not mention this - because anger can teach us of disobedience, whereas CBT's goal is to brainwash people into conformity, groupthink, herd mentality and mass obedience.
Detailed severe fawning. With punishment and exposure to toxic people and their manipulation, control and pathological lying - we learned to make ourselves small in order no to be in the center of attention. This attempt to make ourselves small goes so far - that we will rumble our words. Instead of clear vowels there will be half sounds, like a scared dog growling. To a third party this will appear as a lack of social skills. No amount of social skills can remove this conditioning through discipline. We were hypnotized into not drawing attention to ourselves. Instead of discipline and learning pronunciations and social skills - what will help is the opposite - to draw attention to ourselves even by being weird and by being unclear.
Now just imagine how confusing is for someone experiencing social anxiety - without noticing this pet peeve. And if someone notices it - it is hidden and masked and a lot of mental energy is devoted in feeling embarrassed about it and then trying to cover it up - by being silent and not talking and not drawing attention to oneself due to grammar Nazis or pronunciation police - meaning more of criticism and negative evaluation from others. We try to fawn and not to draw attention and then negative politeness draws exactly those effects we try to avoid - other people's attention and their scrutiny.
Fawning. CBT does not mention this crucial social anxiety trait at all. I only learned about this phrase after I discovered Complex Trauma and it was mind blowing since the next term I learned was trauma bonding and external locus of control which finally confirmed the urge to make other people calm and happy and emotionally regulated that I have no word. I was convinced that I was a nice person, that this is empathy. However there is a difference - with fawning there is a fear of punishment. And fawning is trauma response - it is conditioned in childhood through series of operant conditioning, positive and negative reinforcements. Fawning can be obvious pushover behavior, then it can be mild to severe like Negative politeness and then it can be severe one - to such extent like skewing words in order not to make other people angry. People pleasing is not sickness, it is not something that we can correct by logic through a course of learning assertiveness as CBT tells us. Fawning is based on deep toxic shame and deep destruction and inability to construct the Self - what is our authentic side inside us from which we know what we like and more importantly - what we dislike. I watched a video by Autistic person who explained that when in shopping centre he covers his nose when he pass through fragrances ambient where the scent is too strong - and he said that he is non apologetic about this, he is not concerned how other interpret his covering his nose. This is the difference between Autism and Social anxiety/High-functioning Autism. Someone with social anxiety will adapt to mask social appearance so much that we will avoid receiving any negative or positive reaction from others that we won't behave in different way than the given norm. So social anxiety/High-functioning autism is not functional in the term of not having symptoms. It is functional and masked in such extent where we waste mental, physical, financial, energetic resources not to appear different than the groupthink herd mentality. High functioning means we shoot ourselves in the foot, we self sabotage ourselves in order to cover up our natural instinct manners of behavior that we feel is natural to us. Similar to feminine gay trying to cover up and mask any sign of being gay and trying to appear macho or manly enough not to cause suspicion of others to avoid their scrutiny. CBT deliberately does not mention fawning because CBT is based on conformity - so that we do not rebel, that we do not become someone who rocks the boat - even at the expense of not living our life, not being authentic and not being true to ourselves. This is why CBT is ableist therapy and it is creating mental illness. Removing fawning means removing feeling threat from the people - and this includes toxic people too. That we feel safe in unsafe world - and that is the problem - how to feel safe in toxic ambient without fawning to it and without being punished by toxic people when we stop fawning - and how to remove ourselves from toxic people and toxic ambient without being afraid of people in the process, that we do not over-generalize all people as toxic. Fawning is overlapping with agreeableness - and we need agreeableness as tools to create contact with other people, in job, romantic, family matters, this is how we form connections with other people. Removing threat from people means being fine with their abuse. That we are not afraid of their punishment and that we do not avoid the punishment: verbal abuse, physical abuse, gossip, their rejection, invalidation, shaming and blaming. We attempt to do these through fawning - we think if we stay silent, they will not attack us. Or alternatively, as some self-help authors from twitter claim - that we put boundaries and that we attack others - that somehow this will keep toxic people at bay. Problem with this approach is that we are still being dependent on other people to feel safe. Our locus of control is in other people and even though we might become aggressive and "strong" and "courageous" and scream at other people - we are still codependent on others to feel secure and happy. The solution is that feeling of safety and happiness comes from internal locus of control, from strong belief in our persona, in our instincts, in our common sense - which may or may not include either being silent (for the purpose of avoiding unnecessary drama) or being loud (for the purpose of setting our boundaries). The important detail is that these actions and defenses come from ourselves and not from reactions / as reactions to other people's behavior. In extreme cases - with oppression and poverty, when we are children or when third party depends on us - we need to fawn in order to survive. If we live in Russia or North Korea, it would not be wise to be authentic and to express our true opinion about matters - because we might end up in gulag. This applies to dysfunctional families and any kind of toxic dysfunctional ambient of tyranny and hatred and violence. That is why I dislike self-help twitter coaches who propagate rigid thinking - that we resolve being nice by being rude. In real life - we would already be and become rude long time ago and we would set boundaries - it is the fact that we live on toxic planet where psychopaths and dangerous people walk around free, they are in positions of power - and we do not have much options left but to fawn in order to survive - since criminals and criminally insane are protected by the system.

2024.03.14 03:51 Error404Sanitygone The Dream Theory (GoB)

Any fan of the games probably knows about Stinger Flynn's dreams. In most of our interactions with him so far, he sends us into these weird lucid dreams where we interact with him and a few other mascots - mainly himself, Banban, Nabnab, Fiddles, and Opila. However, one day, a question involving this came to my mind. During these dream sequences...
Who are we, the player, playing as?
Let's set out some rules. It can't be anyone that was physically introduced in Chapter 4 or beyond, they have to be a relatively medium- or human-sized character, and they can't be anyone previously mentioned, nor the player, since that wouldn't make sense.
Looking at that, there's only one character that fits these. (Possibly two, considering Syringeon, but we don't know too much about him.)
And it's Slow Seline.
Yep. The player character during the dreams is Slow Seline.
And on that note, I also think the dreams are trying to represent Stinger Flynn's attempted escapes.
Evidence:
- The dreams mainly seem to consist of scenes from the outside world. Flynn is the only character with any idea what it's like outside the kindergarten; he may be using the things he knows about the world to help the player better understand what they went through, but due to his limited knowledge, many of the locations are just isolated areas, with not too much going on - he mostly just focuses on the direct area. This is also why after the car wreck, they went from a vast desert to a forest.
- Seline mentions being in pain during Chapter 2. A lot of the endings are physically painful (car wrecks, explosions, getting hit by a bus, etc.).
- Banban actively discusses giving up and going home. It's possible something similar happened during the escapedes.
- Nabnab and Fiddles are quite different in these sequences - Nabnab seems to be a lot calmer and friendlier, and Fiddles is small. Something may have happened during the bus sequence, where they got run over and abducted, respectively.
What do you think?

2024.03.10 07:10 mazia3000 What's wrong with me?

Please help me understand what's wrong with me
Childhood: -highly criticized -yelled at for even small mistakes -name calling was common -was still loved and cared for, had a relatively normal childhood but because I was highly sensitive, the yelling, criticizing and namecalling stuff really affected me and my self esteem -emotionally immature parent
As a result I developed trust issues (anxious attachment), unhelpful stress coping mechanisms, and anxiety (social anxiety, maybe even generalized anxiety but im not sure)
Kindergarten- grade 2:
-whenever instructions were given, I'd usually have to ask a friend afterwards because I couldn't follow along or wasn't paying that much attention
-whenever story time would happen and we'd read a book, id struggle to follow along the plot and thus would find it difficult to answer the teachers questions afterwards. Sometimes I'd have to force myself to try to 'lazer focus'
-poor vocabulary
-whenever I'd go to the library to grab a book, I'd end up having to pretend to read or force myself to read it because I would just find it boring but the thing is I actually wanted to read like everyone else. I just couldn't get myself to be genuinely interested in that
-cry easily, very sensitive
-very moved by music and dance, and enjoyed sensory stuff like playing with the sandbox, clay, arts/crafts
Middle school-University (now):
-still extremely sensitive and cry easily
-always worried people are angry with me, and when they are upset with me I'm in fight or flight and have a life crisis cycle of what's wrong with me, why does everyone have an issue with me
-laziness (not feeling like using my mental effort to read textbooks, storybooks, pay attention to what was being taught in class because I usually didn't care enough)
-lots of procrastination. Sometimes in middleschool the day before an exam, I would 'Lazer focus ' where id force myself to memorize as much as possible in as little time as possible eg 4-8 pm I'd make a goal to have everything memorized even if it wasn't realistic just so that I would be somewhat ahead and wouldn't fall behind and spend so much time wasted by the end of the day.
-stressing myself out and doing things last minute eg studying for exams. I felt like I acquired this stress from my mother because she would be very chaotic and yell and criticize me a lot for not being able to memorize the textbook pages fast enough for the upcoming exam. -80% of the time I'm just memorizing text / lecture slides that I deep down don't care about that much, just to pass and get good grades (which were highly emphasized by my family)
-low self esteem
I now as a 21 year old adult feel:
-incompetent
-emotionally immature: refuse to talk to my brother most times because I dont feel like it, refuse to hug him back because it feels too overwhelming, always overwhelmed by his voice volume, don't feel like discussing arguments for more than a few mins, I raise my voice if he raises his, take things personally, get defensive way too easily, too critical of myself and others, passive aggressiveness sometimes, low patience, irritable, lying (habit from childhood to get myself out of trouble/ to people please) etc.... I'm not like this to this extent with others / in public. In public I'm like this sweet kind person. It's mostly my direct family members which makes me feel terrible. I have improved on these behaviors a lot which is good, but I still have more to work on
-im a "feeler". I'm sensitive, like piano, babies, looking at old nostalgic photos etc. Because of this "feeler" thing, I tend to only alllow myself to get into friendships where I have to first "feel" their heart and love and genuineness. I can't ever be In a friendship if I feel judged (probably related to the social anxiety). Family members who are more judgmental and stuff i just shut down and feel a bit negative feelings sometimes towards them whenever I hear they are misinterpreting my intentions and stuff.
-I feel like I can't formulate proper concise, effective communication. Nor accurate communication. I just say things I don't mean all the time, say things just to speak so that it doesnt get awkward, dont think things through, etc
-very few friendships because very few people I feel 'safe' with that I can trust actually care about me
-barely take care of myself (hygiene, exercise, setting up the appointments I need to like dentist, getting groceries, etc)
-things I care learning about like religion, news, stories of prophets, etc I never seem to get to. I try to plan schedules, etc and it just never ends up happening. I don't understand why it's so difficult for me to acquire knowledge and why that is so dreadful. If someone tells me the info In the form of a story during a conversation, that's fine and im super engaged because I love family time. If it's me who has to read through a book/ text, it's dreadful. Even if its videos it's still kinda "meh". But I DO want to learn so bad it's just I don't feel curious / interested enough to do so! Why am I like this? Has my brain not developed enough ever since I was like a child, and so even now as a adult I still don't feel like doing anything or learning about important things? Everything about news, donations, science, tech, religion everything that adults typically learn about I WANT TO LEARN but I just have to BRUTE force myself through it and plan it and set up so many schedules and drag myself to do it, and I end up never doing it at the end of the day. Leads to me having even lower self esteem
-mental laziness. Anything that requires effort my brain is like nope. Argument with my brother? -> plz go away I don't want to talk about it because it's too much mental effort to think through the sequences of events and go into detail with you and im overwhelmed and don't feel like thinking. Essay question that I have to think through the answer? -> my thought process during the exam is UGH i wish i get this exam over with this is so much brain power. Reading reddit posts ?-> skim through barely focusing on the details. Someone talks to me? -> I miss out on some of the details and then it makes it seem like I didnt care when I repeat back to them what I thought they said and it was wrong. Reading a textbook for school/uni? -> never, ever happened. Way too overwhelming and too much mental effort and takes up way too much time and id just re-read sentences like OCD and it would be a waste of time so I'd stick to lecture slides. I just never feel like using my brain.
-easily fall into a victim mindset which is probably immature (why is this happening to me, why can't I do anything right, why is life so hard, why cant others be more sensitive towards me and more patient, why do specific family members keep misinterpreting my intentions, etc). Things as simple as cleaning the house make me feel like i just ran a marathon and need a break. Anything difficult stuff eg cleaning, working out, having a job, when things become too much on my plate I start fantacizing / thinking about how I would crave for others to tell me they understand what im going through, they feel the same, some encouragement, positivity. Maybe I just dont contact my friends enough and crave that connection. Or for example I sometimes randomly have thoughts of myself in a hospital and think about family members visiting me and feeling bad for me which is something I might like but it makes me cringe that I'm like that because of the attention seeking mindset especially when im an adult. I crave for support and encouragement, a loving and sensitive environment, people who understand me. But unfortunately the world doesn't really work that way and most people don't have the extreme level of sensitivity and issues I do, so that's probably why I tend to fall more into this victim mindset and struggle to relate to family members/ talk to anyone
-when I learn stuff, it doesn't fully stick to my brain and i cant verbalize what I just watched /learned nearly as well as others. It's because I was "feeling" the movie and enjoying it in my heart, or I just didnt feel like paying attention rather than fully "mentally" focusing on it and on the details like most people. Like ask me what the movie was about, id be able to explain it but my explanation isnt that good. Id just say in sequence what happened and i forget the details. Its also hard for me to keep that sequence of events in my head: like I forget if it was A->B->M -> D, or D->A-> M-> B. I remember like one sentence/ two sentences of the main jist of each point I want to make. I understand it's because I need to do spaced relationship which I never do but I dont want to do spaced repetition for fun learning. Why can't I just enjoy watching a bunch of YouTube videos about debates, etc and then be able to verbalize It to someone else without forgetting most of the info/barely being able to put it into words? It's so embarrassing because it makes it seem like I have no clue what I'm talking about and like I barely even care enough about x topic I'm talking about to know the details. I'm starting to believe maybe that's true. Maybe I don't care enough about the details which is kinda true, like when I'm watching videos / reading a book and stuff I'm not focusing or using too much mental attention or effort. So I miss a lot of things
-if I were to read an entire book, I'd be able to summarize it but ONLY like using a few sentences. Difficult for me to recall details/ elborate
-struggle to keep up with friendships because each time I go into a depressive / overhelmed state where I either have a lot going on and I just sometimes forget to contact them, or feel like I'm failing at life and things aren't going well so I tend to isolate and not want to contact anyone because its too humiliating to keep telling them my same problems each time/ to act like everything's fine when it's not. most times im telling them the same things over and over again of procrastintion, feeling eh , unsure about what I want to do with my life etc.... it gets old and its emabrassing so I'd rather not deal with that or talk about it. So I tend to go months without contacting some friends and then once I'm feeling better about myself and life then I call. Makes me feel very selfish
-dont feel like an adult, don't communicate or act like one
-poor communication skills (say things I don't mean, or say things in a harsh way I don't mean but I'm just not mature enough to phrase it better, etc)
-really bad anxiety making it very difficult for me to make decisions for what I want to do with myself and my life. Eg marriage -> yes I want to get married and have kids but I can't because im going to mess it up with my anxious attachment, terrible communication skills, immaturity , extreme people pleasing, debilitating social anxiety, unknowleagble mind, etc. Or eg what I want to do as a job ,because everything is an instant "no". Coming up with reasons why every job i come across doesnt fit me because a. It's too anxiety provoking because I'd be working with the public , b. I'm not good enough for it, I'm I'm immature too shy poor communication skills etc, c. Most of the things just sound uninteresting to me. Like sure in a perfect world being a KG teacher would be interesting to me because I love kids and I can be fun and stuff but in a world where it's a job and there's responsibility and teachers and socialization and parents and deadlines and timeliness its so so so overwhelming and doesn't seem like a good fit for my personality .
-can barely handle adult responsibilities eg showering, brushing teeth, meal prep, clean house, taxes, etc -emotionally immature (I am. I avoid responsibility, i react defensively to my family members when im accused of things, I say things I dont mean, I do and say things without throoughly thinking them through or thinking through the consequences, don't feel like doing anything, don't have a job, don't know what I want in a job)
-shaky self identity / wants out of life [mainly due to my shortcomings.(eg I know I want to get married, have children, have a job, etc but im incompetent so I dont want to ruin my life and others lives, and im also too anxious. So then i write off marriage and children )
-feel dumb because I lack so much knowledge due to the years I spent (till current) just glazing over text abd memorizing it without caring about it that much. I lack a LOT of general common knowledge
-easily stressed, easily overwhelmed
-I go from very confident in myself whenever I decide to have a "life changing" season and life is going well (very rare) where I start being more disciplined but this is very temporary. And then I go back to wondering why I can't be normal and low self esteem. When "significant" problems happen eg family member is upset with me/ marriage proposal/ future career options, I tend to have life crisis moments of wait what do I even want out of life? why can't I do anything right? Who am I ? Why am i like this? Is it even possible for me to become a mature adult and think like one? Why does everything always seem to be happening to me?
Could you please help me understand what happened to me? Am I actually just completely disinterested in education? I know that isn't true because I love watching youtube videos on relationships, marriage, organization, etc but sometimes I feel like the only knowledge I actually care about learning is that which will benefit me in a practical or help me reach potential goals I have. Even religious duties like prayer: I realy struggle to do them but then when I remember how it directly and practically benefits me and my life then im able to do it. Makes me feel selfish , immature. Not very smart or interesting or curious or responsible as a person
According to reading a lot of reddit posts, maybe I have ADHD? I'm not sure but yes I do remember throughout school just struggling to comprehend the verbal input from teachers sometimes, being very shy and calm but sometimes hyperactive with my friends, doing things I shouldnt do or saying things I shouldn't say, etc. I do struggle with forgetfulness and attention sometimes. Low self esteem, social anxiety, living in my head a lot but not always having that many thoughts. Unless i force myself through a routine (requires so much effort its insane), even if I take away all my distractions like my phone/youtube, then I can just stare at a ceiling for a good portion of the day while in my bed and be fine with that. I wouldnt have the urge to just get up and do stuff. I dread being an adult and worry for my future. Right now everything is paid for me and im privelged as living in my parents house , education paid for, food paid for, etc. But if im struggling THIS much to function then it worries me. I don't have racing thoughts or anything like that, if anything my thoughts are like a fog/cloud and I usually feel dumb and like I have nothing important to contribute to a conversation. I feel SO much younger than my age , I feel maybe 14 but I'm 21.
It's just when I compare and see WOAH. Most people my age are way ahead take care of themselves, beautify themselves, beauty regimens, get dressed up, are responsible, better intellectually, knowledge wise, maturity wise, can be an adult, etc and im on a whole other side of the spectrum, that's where I started realizing there's an issue here
But I also feel that maybe I just acquired the characteristics of my mother through modelling? Lots of these characteristics she also has (emotional immaturity, laziness, attention issues, communication issues, etc)

The “Russia Will Pay” Project: Registering War Damages

https://preview.redd.it/d3qd1c8nl0nc1.png?width=1335&format=png&auto=webp&s=affb007aa0fd493a0b84629bd4a4f44cd0150255
Maksym Nefyodov is the director of innovative solutions at the Kyiv School of Economics and a member of the Kyiv City Council. In addition, he is engaged in projects aimed at registering the war-caused losses and planning the country’s reconstruction. “Russia Will Pay” is one of the projects where Maksym is the co-founder and co-head. As part of the project, they analyze the impact of Russia’s military aggression on Ukraine. The project is financially supported by the Americans, British, and the EU. About a hundred people work on the technical core, and about 30 analysts work on processing the data.
As of autumn, 2023, the “Russia Will Pay” project has calculated $150 billion in direct damage. Most of the destroyed sites are housing, including apartment buildings, private houses, and dormitories. The damage caused to them reaches $56 billion. Infrastructure, i.e. roads, ports, airports, etc., accounts for about $37 billion. The third category are assets of enterprises (both public and private), with damages totaling $11.5 billion. Next is agriculture (greenhouses, warehouses, stolen grain, destroyed equipment) — $8.7 billion in losses. And the final category are educational institutions, which is about $10 billion.
Besides the direct damage, such as destroyed buildings, roads, pipelines, etc., indirect damage is also being registered. This includes the expenses of the Ukrainian budget for evacuating and accommodating people, broken contracts, interrupted logistics chains, etc.
— Of course, this is more of an abstract and vague figure since it is challenging to calculate indirect losses and lost profit, and it is always much easier to dispute than direct, i.e. physical losses.
The “Russia Will Pay” project assesses the war-caused damage throughout Ukraine, except for the territories that were occupied before the start of the full-scale invasion since there is not enough information about the current situation there.
— I believe everyone has heard the stories about Ukrainian factories being completely looted and about seized property from both state-owned companies and private businesses. However, this is still out of the scope of assessing the destruction caused by hostilities.
The project team uses satellite images to learn about the territories occupied since February 2022. Maksym notes that what was seized but not damaged is not included in the calculations of losses as it will return to Ukraine after the deoccupation.
Maksym Nefyodov, director of innovative solutions at the Kyiv School of Economics and a member of the Kyiv City Council.
Settlements planning reconstruction projects and seeking international partners’ support can apply to the “Russia Will Pay” project and leave an application on their website. However, as Maksym points out, one must be aware that their team’s capability is not limitless, and processing requests may not be as fast as one would like because there is a lot of destruction.
The information collected within this project will be helpful, in particular, as an evidence base in future legal proceedings against Russia.
— You can’t just say that your house was destroyed. You have to prove that it once existed. You have to prove that it was destroyed precisely as a result of hostilities. You have to show some logical sequence. You have to indicate and provide independent proof of the losses claimed.
Initially, the project team collected information from people whose homes were damaged as a result of Russian aggression, but later on, this approach had to be changed:
— Unfortunately, we quickly encountered that the array of such information and the scale of the damage began to increase in geometric progression. The nature of these destructions also rapidly became more complex. It was no longer about a single missile hitting a residential building but about carpet bombing and the destruction of infrastructure.
Accordingly, the data sources were diversified. In particular, they began to work with drone and satellite images — analysing what a house looked like before the destruction and what it looks like after. Maksym notes that using drone and satellite images reduces the time of obtaining data. It is also safer to take such pictures since many of the researched settlements are still under fire.
Fact-checking was a crucial stage. Maksym emphasises that their project works independently of the Ukrainian government. Consequently, they can verify and, if necessary, supplement state records. The data collected by “Russia Will Pay” are also used by Western analysts, as well as funds that support Ukraine as the information provided is a direct confirmation that the Russian Federation is shelling civilian objects. In this way, it helps to counteract Russian propaganda.
— We became the primary data source for many international media and organisations. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the United Nations quote our reports.
The loss assessment methodology was something we had to pay great attention to. It had to be developed based on foreign experience but taking the Ukrainian economy and infrastructure distinctive features into account. Each sector of the city’s functioning and each direction requires its own methodology.
For example, it is challenging to calculate the losses of private entrepreneurs since their reporting differs from the reporting of large factories whose assets can be viewed publicly. Also, when assessing damages, there is the risk of double counting when evaluating the losses of the owner of the premises and the business that rented the premises. Each sector (housing, infrastructure, enterprise assets, etc.) has its own features. Still, Maksym notes that they are trying to figure out the reasonable limit of damages detailing because it is impossible to cover all the nuances.
— It is impossible to evaluate the state of renovations in each particular apartment. The time and effort invested in that should probably be directed to something more useful for helping the country during such times. However, we are looking where the limit can lie in many sectors.
https://preview.redd.it/iqyhungvl0nc1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=54f9c85a87ad22a718c258840c6651df361d1e5c
Maksym says that what makes the “Russia Will Pay” project so valuable is, in particular, the fact that it helps Ukraine to attract international resources for reconstruction and receive weapons from partners. Sometimes, the team works with specific requests. Local authorities or foundations seeking to learn the scale of destruction in certain settlements submit their requests to the team.
— For many villages and towns, our orthoimagery is sometimes the first aerial photography in their history.
For example, the assessment of the damage caused in Mykolaiv was launched because Denmark requested this information after deciding to help with the reconstruction. The collected data were compared with those in the city government (these are the reports of utility companies and the State Emergency Service). In particular, the addresses, the number of floors in the buildings, etc., were checked. All this information has been compiled into an online analysis module that the city and its partners in restoration can use.
— The damages of Mykolaiv’s infrastructure were estimated at approximately €850 million at that time (at the end of last year).
In Mykolaiv, damages from housing destruction amount to €386 million, educational institutions — €45 million. Damage to the water supply system is estimated at €41 million. This is the result of not only shelling but also damage to the pipes because Mykolaiv residents had to use salt water since they didn’t have access to fresh water. The damage to the heating system accounts for €14 million. The damages of enterprises reached €300 million.
Maksym believes that by shelling educational institutions, the Russians are trying to affect the locals’ decision on whether to return after evacuation. After all, even if their house endured, the settlement was cleared of mines, and there is water and electricity, whether there is a school or not remains a key aspect. For parents of children of preschool and elementary school age, this is also an economic factor: if their children cannot go to kindergarten or school, they cannot work full-time.
In the de-occupied territories, Maksym believes, Ukraine must restore critical facilities that will affect whether people will return or not. He means, among other points, the Irpin Bridge or access to drinking water in the settlements affected by the destruction of the Kakhovska HPP dam by the Russians.

— It is wrong to say that we should wait for victory. Meanwhile, these regions will be depopulated. And accordingly, some of these people will not return, will not work, will not pay taxes, and will not volunteer or support the army.

Maksym says that the “Russia Will Pay” project and Dream, a digital restoration ecosystem for accountable management, are developing a toolkit to assess reconstruction progress. For instance, 200 children studied at a school that was designed for 500 pupils even before the full-scale invasion. Then, many of those 200 children were evacuated. And if there is now a plan to build a school for 1000 children, then the question of expediency arises. They also plan to monitor the construction priority so that, for example, education institutions or hospitals, and not stadiums, are rebuilt first. It is also extremely important for society that new projects are inclusive.

2024.03.04 08:21 No_Tap3244 Question about education stages

This is a stupid question. I come from another part of the world where we used to have 2 stages of early education: Pre-daycare > Daycare > school > high school > uni/college
But I understand that in Canada and in North America is much more fragmented. I am not entirely clear if this is the correct sequence and if I am missing anything:
Daycare>kindergarten>preschool>school>junior high>senior high >university/college
Is this correct? And what age groups do these fall in?

2024.03.02 23:01 mablej There is a REASON that students are stuck at a 2nd/3rd grade level

I teach 3rd grade. This is the 1st year that we do not teach phonics. Our focus now is on comprehension. Curriculums do not address phonics. State tests do not assess decoding abilities. There is no "foundational skills" component of ELA. Testing requires students to read a passage and answer comprehension questions.
At this point, if they do not know the basic phonetic rules of English, from here on out, they will only be able to pick up additional words that they will learn as sight words. I can get some to a 3rd grade level, but I do review 1st-2nd grade phonics. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to practice these rules as much as is needed for most students. Some students pick them up, some do not.
I need to be teaching morphology to help them acquire additional vocabulary, or figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. Not vowel teams. Not initial blends. Not basic digraphs.
I do not need students to come to 3rd grade with anything other than the ability to read decodable words, a handful of irregular sight words, and the ability to write a complete sentence. I can handle it from there. I will get those kids to a 4th grade level.
My state has a "read by 3rd" law, which still leaves much room for discretion on the part of teachers, admin, and parents. In my opinion, holding them back and having them retake 3rd grade would do absolutely no good for the students who are reading at a 1st grade level. It would just be another year of frustration, unable to access 3rd grade level material. They need to go back to 1st grade, not retake 3rd. Their reading level might increase to a 2nd or 3rd grade level as they acquire additional sight words (every word for them is a sight word), but they are basically stuck there. After 2nd grade, retention makes absolutely no sense. An 8th grade student who is reading at a 3rd grade level would not benefit from doing 8th grade again. It would make more sense to retain an 8th grade student reading at a 6th or 7th grade level. So they get passed on.
By 3rd grade, students think they can read if they can struggle through a few books, with many miscues, and take away a little meaning. As texts become more complex, they are lost. It becomes identified as a comprehension problem, when, in reality, it is a reading problem. They cannot read grade-level texts and understand them because they are struggling to read. Their whole brains are focused on trying to understand what it is written, and skipping half the words. 3rd grade Common Core standards barely include anything about being able to read. Most of them can be interpreted as comprehension questions in the context of a read-aloud and subsequent discussion.
So yes, 3rd grade looks like a crucial juncture because that is the level that many students seem to be stuck at. 3rd grade is the point where ELA becomes "reading to learn" versus "learning to read." But the problem is what happens before 3rd grade.
Orton-Gillingham teaches phonics from K-2. Kindergarten is simply learning a letter a week, open syllables, and sh, ch, th, wh. That is all they need. 1st and 2nd moves on from there. You can look at the scope and sequence online. It is very slow and very thorough in cementing the ability to decode permanently. Common Core has all of this extra when the focus should be LEARNING HOW TO READ. We can catch kids up on comprehension, but it is almost impossible to catch kids up on foundational skills. After 2nd, phonics is considered intervention, for which many schools do not have appropriate resources. I truly believe that OG, with the addition of fun read-alouds and discussions to build a love of stories and learning new information, increasing vocabulary, helping with phonemic awareness, etc., would literally solve the literacy crisis. Using OG for my tier 2 students in intervention (who came in not knowing letter sounds) has made these students stronger POTENTIAL readers than those who came in as "good enough" readers. My "okay" readers will probably be perpetually stuck at their current level, and are resistant to going back to the basics.
I do not know what to do with my nonreaders, even in 3rd. I cannot imagine what it is like for those of you teaching middle school or high school. For example, we are doing cause & effect. I can read aloud a passage, the questions, and the answer choices. If the child cannot go back to the text, they cannot list the causes of insomnia (recent example). I can reread the passage, but the task basically requires reading, rereading, and thinking. They cannot remember the entire passage, and therefore cannot look back and find supporting details. They can find the cause and effect in a single sentence, read aloud ("It rained, so the fair was cancelled"), but this is not helpful for reading beyond a 2nd grade level.
So here they, are stuck. They need to start from scratch and reconceptualize what it means to be able to read. They need to practice phonics rules with words that they think they know how to read, but they are not reading the words. They just know them. They cannot engage in higher level comprehension activities that require engaging with a longer text that they are able to read independently.
And I really feel for all of you who teach upper grades.

Review

Welcome to my seventeenth album write-up! Been a while, eh? I apologize in advance for the wall of text that is about to follow. Scroll down for a TL;DR on the LP.

Background

I know, I know, you probably thought It's All Over since I Disappeared from this whole full-length thing for a while, Crucify Me, for all I care! However, when I heard that Karl Thomas, better known to the electronic music public as ShockOne, was putting out another long player, I felt The Calling to return in my bones. It's On, baby!
With a discography spanning back almost to the Age of Enlightenment, you'd think the musical Light coming out of the producer that calls Perth his Home would be Dying after so many Cycles around The Sun, but you couldn't be more wrong with that assumptions, so, uhm, Don't Think that! Don't You Know he has been creating sonic experiences that not only make you think about multiple Universes, Chaos Theory, Polygons and the Dark Machines controlling and Collecting all our Hardwired Thoughts, but can also simultaneously set both your lungs and your Heart On Fire with Cyclones of Big Bouncy, Harmonizing Lazerbeams not just getting your Body Movin' but also making you Lose Control Til the break of Dawn, all this time? With some of his tunes, you're even left Thinkin About just how Good This Dubstep Is, even if you're a Chronic True Believer of the drums and the basses. I've Said Woah quite a few times while checking out his full, in my opinion still too Underloved musical catalogue!
Before we take a look at the surely Higher Rush inducing new body work, however, I will of course give you a proper Run-down of the events leading up to all of this. So don't get Further Away From Me, even if you're not yet Ready To Go, it's time to Follow Me down the rabbit hole of the not so Simple Man they call ShockOne!

Karly Beginnings (1982 - 2005)

With his mum, the bass player, and the musical triple threat of guitarist, sound engineer and PA company owner that is his dad responsible for his upbringing, it really isn't that hard to see why Karl Thomas got into this whole music thing. First off, the Thomasses made sure that his kindergarten after-hour curriculum included plenty of Pink Floyd listening lessons, and when that well dried up, they brought in the likes of The Police, Midnight Oil, T-bone Burnett and Alan Parsons. Second off, he became a roadie, helping out his dad at all sorts of PA jobs, basically as soon as he could walk. Third off, Karl was gifted a drum kit of his own at the ripe old age of four. This musical Thomasterplan only started to stumble when young Karl traded his drum sticks for the life of balling at age 10 and became obsessed with becoming a professional basketball player. While he did actually pursue that until he played at a state level, he luckily (for us) soon found his way back to drumming. Only one thing remained constant: his parents' full unambigious support.
As his tastes developed, he started to enjoy the grungier, rockier music the 90s had brought to the table, but everything changed when his cousin brought over The Prodigy's Experience on tape that one fateful day. In no time, he went from agreeing to listen to it because "there’s a cat meowing in this song" to having a whole musical epiphany. With legendary Australian radio station triple j pushing him even further down that treacherous path, this snowballed into a whole-on obsession for all things electronic, turning his life upside down. So, like, right side up? Having grown up in the small Western Australian town of Esperance, Karl might have been rather far away from the big arenas or any significant scenes at first, but as fate would have it, he and his family would eventually relocate to the cultural hub that is Perth! While the metropolis has apparently a bit of an isolationist reputation and is said to lag behind other big cities of the world when it comes to emerging musical scenes, it still proved to be the perthect place for Karl to discover another, even more energetic genre: Drum and Bass!
However, even though he had already picked up on the fast percussions and the wobbly basses at Skate demos he attended, he needed to hear the carnage in a different setting to become fully hooked. In the mood for some good ol' Trance or House or whatever, the then 16-to-17-year-old and his friends went out to one of their usual warehouse raves, but this time was different. Instead, they were about to witness the sonic recreation of the end of the world, orchestrated by the likes of El Hornet, Greg Packer and, once fully converted to the faster tempos, even Bad Company, Ed Rush & Optical and Konflict. Especially certified classics Messiah and The Nine pulled him in and there was basically no turning back from that point on anymore.
While both the drums and the basses had his full attention as a listener, his own musical prowess still focused more on the former rather than the latter. Throughout a rather hard time in high-school, he carried on drumming his heart out, both in private and at school. Sure, his rebellious spirit lead to him failing a couple of music classes and specialist programs, but it arguably allowed him to pursue even greater things afterwards. Most notably: Drumming for Xygen, the nu-metal band him and his friends Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Jay Burns founded in the early 2000s. You might have already picked up on a couple big names there (yes, that Jay Burns!), but back then, they were just four dudes rehearsing at Karl's dad’s factory unit and playing to a whopping 20 people in Perth pubs. However, as you might have guessed, even with hits like Survival Of The Fakest and Lycaeum, the band didn't last all too long, since Rob and Gareth left the group to try their hands at electronic music production. Hah, as if that would ever work out!

ShockTwo (2005 - 2010)

Well, what do you do when half your band quits to work on electronic music instead? Grab the other half and follow them into the fray! During their time together as bandmates, Gareth introduced Karl to the wonderful world of trackers, with Fast Tracker 2 being the first weapon of choice, and Rob shared his accumulated wealth of knowledge about sequencing and general electronic music production stuff with him, so it wasn't completely out of left field, to be fair. While both the knowledge and the hardware, an old IBM 486, were there, ready to go one might even say, Karl and Jay still hadn't quite managed to find a sick producer name. One day, during a brainstorming session with the Xygang around 2005, they brought up the name Shook Ones, as a reference to the Mobb Deep classic. Rob, not having heard them quite right, agreed that the name Shock One would be great for them, and the rest is history!
A history I intend to continue combing through, of course. With a sick, brand spanking new name now secured, the two of them started dropping all sorts of scientific tunes, the first two of which, Dropping Science and Silverscreen, were quickly signed to Friction's Shogun Audio. It gives me immense joy that, out of all the labels, ShockOne's debut came out on an imprint so phonetically similar to the name. Kismet aside, this first release opened the doors to more and more opportunities, with double single after double single dropping on Shogun, Incite, RAM Records offshoot Frequency Recordings, and, in 2007, even Futurebound's Viper Recordings. For that last one, Karl actually put the emphasis on single in double single and the one in ShockOne, as Jay had now also jaywalked away from the project by that point. More like Bye-per Recordings, am I right?! Anyway.
By this point, the local scene was already well aware of the talent, winning one Perth Music Dance Award after the other, and his list of successes only grew from there! An entry on the 2008 Headroom compilation EP, followed by Follow You, and the first of many infamous releases: The Sun, featuring the most perthunctious of them all, Phetsta. All throughout this, Karl was still not quite happy with the quality of the tunes he had been producing (he considered it "Purple monkey dishwasher", to directly quote him), but this self-doubt was absolutely squashed when he and his sister, Reija Thomas, probably better known as Reija Lee, came up with Polygon. Despite only being the second piece of dance music Reija had ever sung on, the siblings' first (official) collaboration got absolutely rinsed on triple j's airwaves, a proper full-circle moment for Karl, and was even called the "biggest drum and bass track around" by none other than Annie Mac! However, 2009 had even more in store for him than just the massive success of Polygon. First off, the self-titled EP it was part of also gave us the return of Phetsta on the break-fueled True Believer with young up-and-comer Metrik and Karl's first Dubstep exploration with Adachigahara's Theme, which stayed at number 1 on the Dubstep chart for over a month, and secondly, ShockOne's name also appeared a whopping four times on the now legendary Acts Of Mad Men compilation!

Shock Numero Uno Versus The World (2010 - 2016)

After such a highly successful 2009, ShockOne's 2010 was mostly shaped by remixes, both as a remixer for Netsky, BCee, Chicane and Cutline, and a remixee on his Re-Fix EP, with remixes from himself, Phetsta and Dirtyphonics, the last of which got featured Andy C's Nightlife 5 and reached numero uno on the BBC 1Xtra charts. You know what usually follows a load of remixes like that - album news! 2011 we got the confirmation that the debut wasn't long away anymore, with the first single Crucify Me, another venture with the Phetstmeister, dropping in the summer to drum up some hype. And drum it did! With himself on the nostalgic vocals and a Dubstep mix on the flipside, it reached #1 on Beatport's DnB chart, #1 on Drum&Bass Arena and #1 on both the DnB and Dubstep charts on Trackitdown, a historical first! Spurred on by this success, Karl followed that up with Dubstep weapon Relapse, with Tantrum Desire providing the DnB flipside this time around.
And then... Not a whole lot for a while. Well, musically at least. 2012 saw him admitting to his obsession with his girlfriend-at-the-time (but don't tell her), proclaiming his love for Hudson Mohawke's now infamous sex anthem Cbat (more like CockOne am I right), playing shows all over the European continent (the security guards in Russia had actual AK47s), and, oh yeah, small ting, he moved to London! In Australia, he later explained, you can get by relatively easily and just spend your free time in the sun avoiding snakes or something. In Hackney, on the other hand, Silky K, as they now called him, had to properly fight for his survival by becoming the very best version of himself and hustling harder than ever before.
He improved his game so much, in fact, that he realised that the early, yet to be released album material from 2011 wasn't up to his newly raised standards, so the debut LP got delayed a bunch again. Aside from remixes for Ayah Marar and Tommy Trash, Mister K had one more original musical ace up his sleeve to unveil that year though: Chaos Theory! With Machete Trailer guy Corey Burton on the documentary style vocals, the Dubstep-y epic soared to #1 on the iTunes Dance Chart, #2 on Beatport (behind Skrillex and Nero, to be fair) and #1 on Track It Down, and earned itself an Ace Of Clubs seal of approval from Crissy Criss.
After three whole years of work, like 50 scrapped songs, and more nervous breakdowns than you might expect, his debut album Universus was finally released in 2013! Released on Viper & One Love Recordings, the long player took listeners on a journey through DnB, Drumstep, Dubstep, 110BPM stuff, 130BPM 4x4 stuff and, according to various interviews, sea shanties, tibetan monk throat singing, monk step, some bro-wonk and, to finish it all off, some emo-twerk. This sort of variety, all wrapped up in an expansive sci-fi concept, with the likes of Metrik, The Notorioius P.H.E.T. and his sister joining in on the fun, showed that the LP had been well worth the wait and the scene ate it up! Not only did Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 and triple j show a lot of love, it also snagged the pole position on both the Australian iTunes chart and the Australian ARIA charts, next to Michael Bublé and Bruno Mars. Plus, the massively successful Australian Universus tour, particularly the Perth album launch show, which Karl gushed over in practically every interview!
The stress of the process left its marks though. Sure, he still had a couple Metrik collaborations on UKF and Hospital and remixes for TC and R3hab come out, and I think he moved back to Perth during this time (I can't verify that though), but that was basically it for the next couple of years.

Just a small ShockOne in the Dark Machine (2016 - 2019)

Until his triumphant return in 2016! Continuing on from his previous multi-genre explorations, he laid waste to the whole Dubstep scene, from solo slammers to collaborative bangers with the likes of Virtual Riot, HWLS, and, of course, Phetrick Star, from an original EP on Warner to remixes for Barely Alive on Disciple (that one was DnB, to be fair) and Dillon Francis and NGHTMRE on Mad Decent. Then, in 2017, the arguably even more triumphanterest of returns: The Thomas siblings collaborated again, on A Dark Machine! Fun fact about this anthem: Even though Reija had broken her arm the day before, she and her slinged-up broken extremity still managed to make it to the studio thanks to the wonders of very strong painkillers, and against all odds really, the takes they recorded that day ended up being so good, they became the ones you hear on the final version today. To celebrate the debut Monstercat single reaching the top 10 of the actual Australian singles charts (!), Karl went on the Dark Machine national headline tour with Reija, HWLS and Godlands7 shortly after.
Following that frankly huge ordeal, he's continued on with a steady stream of successes here and there, sometimes collaborating with Brookes Brothers and Cyantific on their respective Viper albums, sometimes remixing DJ Snake, and fellow Aussies What So Not and Ekko & Sidetrack, sometimes winning Best Electronic Producer and all sorts of other awards at the West Australian Music (WAM) Awards and the National Live Music Awards, and sometimes even becoming a father. Between all of that, however, he sneakily built up a catalogue of tunes with suspiciously similar looking artworks and before you knew it, he unleashed his second album, A Dark Machine, in 2019, via Monstercat-slash-Warner, onto the world.
Inspired by classic 80's film soundtracks from legendary producers like Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis and with a posse including Cecil, Cruz Patterson, The Bloody Beetroots and Ekko and Sidetrack bringing their own creative takes to the table, Karl once again took the listener on a journey into an expansive conceptual world. A "conversation between the subconscious and the self", an exploration of how past experiences shape our way of thinking and, consequently, how we act in everyday life, an acknowledgement that the subconscious is an integral part of us we have to come to terms with - and also a banging, multi-genre album that peaked at #26 on the ARIA album charts, beating out such suckers as that Elton John dude.

Karl Thomaschine Records (2020 - 2024)

Another successful album launch out of the way, plus the smashing tour right after, he finally decided to go back and pursue a decade-old dream of his: A ShockOne live show™️! Luckily performed before the end of the world as we knew it, this debut show at Origin Fields not only saw him dust off the old drums for the first time in 10 whole years, but also strum the guitar and even sing for the very first time in front of people, ever. With that many firsts out of the way on New Year's already, you'd think that's enough to last a whole year, but he also wanted to tackle something more community-oriented: A label! You see, over the years he had gotten to know a plethora of talented people all over not just Australia, but also New Zealand and even Japan, that simply... weren't a thing on the usual European labels. The likes of Lee Mvtthews, who were already huge in Kiwiland, or newer names like YUSSI all already had the chops to create some incredibly sick tunes, they just needed a platform. A platform like Dark Machine Records, founded in mid-2020 in collaboration with Central Station Records.
The plan wasn't "just" putting out sick music though, Karl's ambitions were, and still are, way higher. Under the DMR umbrella, he and his team would both organise the rather huge A Dark Machine Warehouse events all over Australia and even New Zealand and regularly throw unregularly huge raves in Perth, slowly but surely building up a proper bass music community all across Oceania. They did also champion a lot of super talented artists and their straight-up insane music on the way there though. You might think when you kick off a label with a tune as ginormous as Lee Mvtthews's Turning Back, you'd have trouble keeping that level of quality going. Not Dark Machine Records though! Just on our weekly DnB releases threads, I've already talked about simply spectacular DMR releases from Pirapus, sammythesinner and HAZEY, but other genres were also very well represented by the likes of Tek Genesis, Pulp Friction and TWERL, among so many others.
Relatively unbothered by the lockdowns, which apparently barely changed Karl's day-to-day studio life anyway, he continued to work on getting his own sick music out there. Collabs with Metrik and Koven, a charity single to raise funds for the Australian bushfires with fellow Perthians SLUMBERJACK, TWERL, Loston and HWLS, remixes for Delta Heavy, Alison Wonderland, Blanke, Odd Mob and Kanine, all rightfully earned him even more wins at the WAM awards, or wammies, as I like to call them, but that wasn't the only thing that was going on during this tumultous time. Single after single, some in collaboration with UKF, some even sharing similar-looking artworks, started to appear over the years - that son of a bench was building up to another album all this time! While not too much of a surprise considering all that, I still immediately jumped on the hype train when album number three, Organism Algorithm, was announced 4 weeks ago. I mean, did you see Karl's new sleek haircut in that video?!
Yep, that means we have finally caught up with the present times and we can finally talk about the actual album! I've got one more thing though: Fun facts! Here you go: - Karl's shoe size is 11 U.S. (that's 43-44 in EU sizes) - His least favourite Simpsons character: Milhouse - The Simpsons character he most identifies with: also Milhouse - He once fell out of the DJ booth, into the crowd, onto his face at a gig - His interests include entomology, ghost hunting, Big Foot appreciation, spelling, parallel parking, leisure walking, support groups and having a dislocatable thumb. All true, totally not sarcastic answers, directly from Karl!

Track Breakdown

Congrats, you've made it to the Track Breakdown!

1. Alone

We open with an absolute BANG, with the intro track to most ShockOne sets these past few years: Alone! As if floating through the vast nothingness of space, we only hear brief glimpses of synths gently swiping our futuristic vessel of choice every now and then, the vocals faintly echoing in the distance. Suddenly, a gargantuan machine announces itself with almost earthquakian basses, towering above us and promising us in best Nero fashion that we'll never be alone. Since that does sound quite enticing and I mean what could even go wrong with that, we keep approaching it, until, of course, all hell breaks loose. Basses thrashing about all around us, heavy-hitting Dancefloor drumwork, singular cowbell hits, just absolutely phat! Especially that buildup in the second half is simply goosebump-inducing, preparing us nicely for what's to come.

2. Open Your Mind

Keeping the banger train rolling, Karl channels his inner Kuato and asks us to consider Opening Our Mind. Soon, the hypnotising mantra is expanded upon by another vocal polyrhythmically interjecting that we should please go to the floor. Before your head can explode from too much expansion, the circle is broken and the reason for the second vocal's insistence is revealed: An enormously satisfying siren lead chugging along like a freight train on a truly grimey bassline. I'm honestly addicted. Even the meditative vocal sample in the breakdown can't get my subconsciousness to let go of this banger in my head. Dudududuuuuuuu, du!

3. Ready To Go (feat. Bright Sparks)

Speaking of obsession, next up we've got the personification of an addictive substance taunting us into consumption, on Ready To Go. The intro might make you think we're getting some more of that sweet, sweet monk step we've heard so much about earlier, but instead Karl treats us to a true earworm of a Dancefloor tune. It's so catchy and drills so far into your brain that it's almost as if the lyrics are actually coming from the track itself, mocking you as press play for the 24th time in a row, because you just can't quit it. It's not just the lyrics themselves though, the uniquely captivating performance from English duo Bright Sparks is just as much a reason for my endless spiral of replays.

4. Organism Algorithm

Next up, we move a little more sluggishly than before, on Organism Algorithm. What the title track lacks in speed, however, it makes more than up for in menacing power. While the break-heavy rhythms and the vocal chopping on its own put your mind in a state of nostalgic euphoria with its buckets of oldschool rave flair, the supercharged basses yank you right out of your bubble back into the bleak future. A contrast that can especially be felt in the two buildups. In the first half, things might start off a little unnerving and distorted, but we lose ourselves in the exhilarating melodies. In the second half, we are treated to one miserable cynical thought after the other, only stopping when the synths are turned all the way up, even more distorted than before.

5. Higher Rush (feat. Freaks & Geeks)

Some soothing guitar strumming leads us to the first entry of a streak of straight-up anthemic vocal-driven bangers: Higher Rush! With Doctor P's and Phil-from-Roksonix's collaborative DnB project Freaks & Geeks on the production with Karl and London-based vocalist JANEVA on the vocal performance that's as incredible as it is uncredited, we explore the off-the-chains pleasure, that sweet, sweet rush that nothing else can give us, and the powerful yearning for more once you are deep in it, on exactly the kind of instantly catchy, sing-along whomp anthem type beat you'd expect from such a combination of artists. Tune.

6. Thinkin About (feat. Lee Mvtthews)

Since it worked so wonderfully the first time, Karl decided to get JANEVA back on the uncredited vocal duty one more time, on Thinkin About. Apparently originally recorded for a different tune, Karl and his collaborators, none other than Kiwi legends Lee Mvtthews, decided to rework the original emotional struggle with unrequited love into the perfect "blend of rave and radio", to the point that the process felt more like a remix than an original. As such, the lovely vocals are of course still the main star in this one, but thanks to the wild break-heavy, distorted whomp laden, choppy sounds of the drop the whole thing becomes a proper summer festival anthem.

7. Heart On Fire (feat. Pauline Herr)

After the wild whirlwind world of unrequited love, we now continue on with requited love, on Heart On Fire. Los Angeles based production, DJing and singing triple threat Pauline Herr pulls of such a delightfully heartwarming vocal performance, filled to the brim with pure, unbridled love for the subject at hand, that your heart really might just catch on fire from too much loveliness. While having your heart be on fire does sound like something a doctor should look at, I choose to interpret it in the more metaphorical, magical kind. My personal highlight has got to be the cute little vocalisations towards the end of the chorus and the vocoder action in the breakdown. Elevating this even further, Karl wraps this wonderfulness in a blanket of absolutely gorgeous synths exploding into all sorts of colours in the night sky. A bit of a mixed metaphor maybe. You know what isn't mixed though? My opinion about this lovely piece of music!

8. Hey Boy Hey Girl

Yep, you've read that right! We've reached the rave-y part of the album, and Karl unkalmly kicks it off with a rebuild of The Chemical Brothers seminal banger Hey Boy Hey Girl! Sometimes ID'd as an actual ShockOne Remix on 1001tracklists, you might have already heard the 4x4 slammer in one of Karl's recent sets. Aside from everything being obviously sped up to DnB tempo, slight rhythmic changes in the relentlessly pounding, acid-laden four-to-the-floor sections and the titular vocal sample from Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three's The Roof Is On Fire having been revoiced, with the here we go being replaced by let's go, a lot of the details of the original have actually been quite faithfully reconstructed. But with a little ShockOne magic spread on top of it, to give it that extra oomph, you know?

9. Follow Me

Now for the one you all probably already know: Follow Me! Not only did the 2020 single win Karl another trophy at the Australian Independent Record Awards, it also quickly became his biggest-ever tune, with it having almost crossed the 8.5 million mark on Spotify alone. I'll admit that I also had immediately fallen in love with it back then, and to be honest, the love never really went away. Hearing this "message from the all-seeing, all-knowing god of algorithms" being blasted at the socially distanced 2020 Rampage event in Cologne was almost a religious experience and hearing it played out at Let It Roll last year was no different. There's nothing more fun than singing along to the computerized voice spouting off the iconic lyrics, before being blasted to bits by the absolute mad call-and-response between the menacing, bassface-causing bass and that ratatatat rhythm. And it just mixes with everything! Legendary tune really.

10. Say Woah

From one computerized woah-inducing slapper to the other, we now follow things up with Say Woah! On its face the lyrics are straight-forward Dancefloor stuff, but the constant repetition, the two different, menacing computer-generated voices and probably also the hard-hitting bass make you feel as if we're witnessing AI programs discuss how to distract people, so they can safely execute their plans to overtake humanity. Just let them hear the bass and soon enough they'll get down on the floor! Extinction worries aside, the structurally minimal yet weightily (surely that's a word) maximal 4x4 beat underneath this heated debate between our future overlords really does make you say woah. Maybe there's no deeper meaning and Karl just wanted an excuse to get Brenton Cruff aka The Hakk Guy for a music video and this kind of thick, bassy 4x4 beat was the way to go, who knows! Either way, a relentless tune really.

11. Hardwired (feat. Reija Lee)

Before we close this book again, we need to get one more thing out of the way: An anthem with Reija Lee! It might almost feel obligatory at this point, but to be honest, as long as they are this amazing they can do a whole album of tunes together and I wouldn't get sick of it. On their newest collaboration, Hardwired, which apparently also had some touch-ups from Metrik if the credits are to be trusted, the siblings once again combined a uniquely futuristic yet emotionally resonant, simply stunning vocal performance about one's inability to defend against that antagonistic inner voice, with the powers of synths that are as strikingly gorgeous as they have ever been and goosebump-inducing accents that are simply delightfully placed, to create one hell of a nostalgic experience, with that sweet sweet modern touch. Something from the Thomasses, for the (Tho)masses.

12. It's All Over

Don't worry, It's All Over now. Even though this Dubstep weapon of (Tho)mass destruction released a whopping 4 years ago on Monstercat, its many switchups, each more ridiculous than the one that came before, and the general sense of flow you get from all these transitions help it feel as fresh as new. You honestly cannot tell where this apocalyptic experience is taking you next, I mean, after a rather hype delayed drop he even does a bit of Double-Time Psytrance in the second half! As long as it's got ShockOne on the soundtrack, even the end of the world is still a great time. Maybe not for the whole family though.

Conclusion

ShockOne did it again! For those that want some substantial storytelling in their albums, Organism Algorithm can be a cinematic deep dive into the hedonistic side of cyberpunk in the face of certain doom. Be it due to all-powerful artificial intelligence or climate disaster, some sort of disaster is definitely going on in the dark machine extended universe, and we're all horrible at coping with it, latching onto addictive tendencies, championing ignorance and just trying to live our best life despite it all. What other choice do we really have? It's what our organism algorithm dictates!
Well, and for those who just want some sick tunes, you're definitely getting your fill too! To the Shock of no One. Even though it is technically Karl's least diverse album, genre-wise that is, the sheer variety of sounds present throughout all these DnBangers more than makes up for it. With picturesque bangers like Alone, dreamy sing-along anthems like Heart On Fire or Hardwired, rave-y weapons like Open Your Mind, or 4x4 carnage like Hey Boy Hey Girl or Say Woah, basically every corner of the Dancefloor spectrum is covered, and then some. ShockOne has always stood for world class storytelling and top-notch production that just hits you in your very core, but this album is on a whole 'nother level in that regard in my opinion. I am a little biased as a full-on DnB guy though, I will admit that.
TL;DR: Bleak yet beautiful, pessimistic yet cheeky, rave-y yet heartfelt - a true landmark in the world of Dancefloor, and honestly Drum and Bass as a whole. Perthect.

2024.02.22 20:31 johnrushx If only someone told me this before my first startup

If only someone told me this before my first startup:

1. Validate idea first.

I wasted a decade building stuff nobody needed. Incubators and VCs served to me as a validation, but I was so wrong.

2. Kill my EGO.

It’s not about me, but the user. I must want what the user wants, not what I want. My taste isn't important. The user has expectations, and I must fulfill them.

3. Don’t chaise investors.

Chase users, and then investors will be chasing me. I've never had more incoming interest from VC than now when I'm the least interested in them.

4. Never hire managers.

Only hire doers until PMF. So many people know how to manage people and so few can actually get sh*t done barehand.

5. Landing page is the least important thing in a startup.

Pick a simple template, edit texts with a no-code website builder in less than an hour and that's it! At the early stage, I win traffic outside of my website, people are already interested, so don't make them search for the signup button among the texts! Focus on conversion optimization only when the traffic is consistent. Keep it to one page. Nobody gonna browse this website.

6. Hire only fullstack devs.

There is nothing less productive in this world than a team of developers for an early-stage product. One full stack dev building the whole product. That’s it.

7. Chase global market from day 1.

If the product and marketing are good, it will work on the global market too, if it’s bad, it won’t work on the local market too. So better go global from day 1, so that if it works, the upside is 100x bigger. I launched all startups for the Norwegian market, hoping we will scale to international at some point. I wish I launched to international from day 1 as I do now. The size of the market is 10000x bigger. I can validate and grow products in days, not in years as it used to be.

8. Do SEO from day 2.

As early as I can. I ignored this for 14 years. It’s my biggest regret. It takes just 5 minutes to get it done on my landing page. I go to Google Keyword Planner, enter a few keywords around my product, sort them by traffic, filter out high competition kws, pick the top 10, and place them natively on my home page and meta tags. Add one blog article every week. Either manually or by paying for an AI blogging tool.

9. Sell features, before building them.

Ask existing users if they want this feature. I run DMs with 10-20 users every day, where I chat about all my ideas and features I wanna add. I clearly see what resonates with me most and only go build those. If I don't have followers, try HN, Reddit, or just search on X for posts and ask it in the replies. People are helpful, they will reply if the question is easy to understand.

10. Hire only people I would wanna hug.

My cofounder, an old Danish man said this to me in 2015. And it was a big shift. I realized that if I don’t wanna hug the person, it means I dislike them on a chemical/animal level. Even if I can’t say why, but that’s the fact. Sooner or later, we would have a conflict and eventually break up. It takes up to 10 years to build a startup, make sure I do it with people I have this connection with.

11. Invest all money into my startups and friends.

Not crypt0, not stockmarket, not properties. I did some math, if I kept investing all my money into all my friends’ startups, that would be about 70 investments. 3 of them turned into unicorns eventually. Even 1 would have made the bank. Since 2022, I have invested all my money into my products, friends, and network. If I don't have friends who do startups, invest it in myself.

12. Post on Twitter daily.

I started posting here in March last year. It’s my primary source of new connections and growth. I could have started it earlier, I don't know why I didn't.

13. Don’t work/partner with corporates.

Corporations always seem like an amazing opportunity. They’re big and rich, they promise huge stuff, millions of users, etc. But every single time none of this happens. Because I talk to a regular employees there. They waste my time, destroy focus, shift priorities, and eventually bring in no users/money.

14. Don’t get ever distracted by hype

e.g. crypt0. I lost 1.5 years of my life this way. I met the worst people along the way. Fricks, scammers, thieves. Some of my close friends turned into thieves along the way, just because it was so common in that space. I wish this didn’t happen to me. I wish I was stronger and stayed on my mission.

15. Don’t build consumer apps.

Only b2b. Consumer apps are so hard, like a lottery. It’s just 0.00001% who make it big. The rest don’t. Even if I got many users, then there is a monetization challenge. I’ve spent 4 years in consumer apps and regret it.

16. Don’t hold on bad project for too long, max 1 year.

Some projects just don’t work. In most cases, it’s either the idea that’s so wrong that I can’t even pivot it or it’s a team that is good one by one but can’t make it as a team. Don’t drag this out for years.

17. Tech conferences are a waste of time.

They cost money, take energy, and time and I never really meet anyone there. Most people there are the “good” employees of corporations who were sent there as a perk for being loyal to the corporation. Very few fellow makers.

18. Scrum is a Scam.

For small teams and bootstrapped teams. If I had a team that had to be nagged every morning with questions as if they were children in kindergarten, then things would eventually fail. The only good stuff I managed to do happened with people who were grownups and could manage their stuff on their own. We would just do everything over chat as a sync on goals and plans.

19. Outsource nothing at all until PMF.

In a startup, almost everything needs to be done in a slightly different way, more creative, and more integrated into the vision. When outsourcing, the external members get no love and no case for the product. It’s just yet another assignment in their boring job. Instead of coming up with great ideas for my project they will be just focusing on ramping up their skills to get a promotion or a better job offer.

20. Bootstrap.

I spent way too much time raising money. I raised more than 10 times, preseed, seeded, and series A. But each time it was a 3-9 month project, meetings every week, and lots of destruction. I could afford to bootstrap, but I still went the VC-funded way, I don’t know why. To be honest, I didn’t know bootstrapping was a thing I could do or anyone does.

21. It may take a decade.

When I was 20, I was convinced it takes a few years to build and succeed with a startup. So I kept pushing my plans forward, to do it once I exited. Family, kids. I wish I married earlier. I wish I had kids earlier.

22. No Free Tier.

I'd launch a tool with a free tier, and it'd get sign-ups, but very few would convert. I'd treat free sign-ups as KPIs and run on it for years. I'd brag about signups and visitors. I'd even raise VC money with these stats. But eventually, I would fail to reach PMF. Because my main feedback would come from free users and the product turned into a perfect free product. Once I switched to "paid only" until I validated the product, things went really well. Free and paid users often need different products. Don't fall into this trap as I did.

23. Being To Cheap.

I always started by checking all competitors and setting the lowest price. I thought this would be one of the key advantages of my product. But no, I was wrong. The audience on $5 and $50 are totally different. $5: pain in the *ss, never happy, never recommend me to a friend, leave in 4 months. $50: polite, give genuine feedback, happy, share with friends, become my big fan if I solve their request.

24. I will fail.

When I started my first startup. I thought if I did everything right, it would work out. But it turned out that almost every startup fails. I wish I knew that and I tried to fail faster, to get to the second iteration, then to the third, and keep going on, until I either find out nothing works or make it work.

25. Use boilerplates.

I wasted years of dev time and millions of VC money to pay for basic things. To build yet another sidebar, yet another dashboard, and payment integration... I had too much pride, I couldn't see myself taking someone else code as a basis for my product. I wanted it to be 100% mine, original, from scratch. Because my product seems special to me.

26. Spend more time with Family & Friends.

I missed the weddings of all my best friends and family. I was so busy. I thought if I didn't do it on time, the world would end. Looking back today, it was so wrong. I meet my friends and can't share those memories with them, which makes me very sad. I realized now, that spending 10% of my time with family and friends would practically make no negative impact on my startups.

27. Build Products For Audiences I Love.

I never thought of this. I'd often build products either for corporates, consumers, or for developers. It turns out I have no love for all 3. But I deeply love indie founders. Because they are risk-takers and partly kids in their hearts. Once I switched the focus to indie makers on my products, my level of joy increased by 100x for me.

28. Ignore Badges and Awards

I was chasing those awards just like everyone else. Going to ceremonies, signing up for events and stuff. I've won tons of awards, but none of those were eventually useful to my business. I better focused on my business and users.

29. Write Every Single Day.

When I was a kid, I loved writing stories. In school, they would give an assignment, and I'd often write a long story for it, however, the teacher would put an F on it. The reason was simple, I had an issue with the direction of the letters and the sequence of letters in the words. I still have it, it's just the Grammarly app helping me to correct these issues. So the teacher would fail my stories because almost every sentence had a spelling mistake that I couldn't even see. It made me think I'm made at writing. So I stopped, for 15 years. But I kept telling stories all these years. Recently I realized that in any group, the setup ends up turning into me telling stories to everyone. So I tried it all again, here on X 10 months ago. I love it, the process, the feedback from people. I write every day. I wish I had done it all these years.
The End.
\ this is an updated version of my post on the same topic from 2 months ago. I've edited some of the points and added 9 new ones.*
** This is not advice, it's my self-reflection that might help you avoid same mistakes if you think those were mistakes

What is the Children Learning Reading Program?

The Children Learning Reading program is a phonics-based approach to reading instruction. Its core principle is that children learn to read most effectively by first understanding how sounds (phonemes) connect to letters and letter combinations, allowing them to decode words. The program is designed primarily for children ages two to seven, offering a structured path to building literacy skills.
The materials include:
  • Two comprehensive manuals: These provide parents with detailed strategies and step-by-step lesson plans.
  • Lesson stories: Engaging short stories that help children practice their decoding and comprehension skills.
  • Audio files: Pronunciation guides to ensure correct letter sounds are learned.

How Does Children Learning Reading Teach?

Let's take a closer look at the program's methodology and how it fosters reading success in children:
1. Phonemic Awareness Before children can learn to read, they need to understand that words are composed of individual sounds. The program starts by developing phonemic awareness through fun activities, teaching children to identify and manipulate sounds within words.
2. Synthetic Phonics Children Learning Reading adopts a synthetic phonics approach, where children learn to associate letters and letter combinations with their corresponding sounds. They then practice blending these sounds to form words.
3. Step-by-Step Progression The program follows a carefully structured sequence, starting with basic letter sounds and gradually progressing to more complex phonics patterns. This systematic approach ensures that children build a solid foundation and experience continuous success.
4. Engaging Activities Learning is integrated with engaging activities and the provided short stories. This helps keep children motivated and aids in the application of new reading skills.

Benefits of the Children Learning Reading Program

The Children Learning Reading program boasts several potential benefits for young readers. Here's a breakdown of the most promising ones:
1. Proven Success Perhaps the most compelling aspect of this program is its track record. The methods used are based on sound research in reading instruction, and numerous testimonials from parents attest to its effectiveness. Many report seeing significant improvements in their children's reading fluency and comprehension after using the program.
2. Boosts Confidence Because the Children Learning Reading program breaks down reading into smaller, achievable steps, children often experience small successes along the way. This consistent positive reinforcement helps to build a child's confidence in their reading ability, leading to increased enjoyment and a lifelong love of reading.
3. Early Reading Advantages Children who learn to read at a young age often gain an early advantage in their overall academic performance. Strong early reading skills are linked to better vocabulary, improved comprehension across subjects, and higher chances of school success.

Q: What is the best program to help kids read?
A: Unfortunately, there's no single "best" reading program for every child. Different children learn in different ways, and the most suitable program depends on individual needs and learning styles. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a reading program:
  • Methods: Does it focus on phonics, whole-word memorization (sight words), or a balanced approach?
  • Structure: Is it easy to follow and use consistently at home?

Q: What is the best online reading program for kids?
A: Several excellent online reading programs are available, each with unique strengths. Here are a few popular and well-regarded options:
  • ABCmouse: Offers age-appropriate interactive games and activities for young learners across various subjects including reading.
  • Reading Eggs: Makes learning to read fun with games and rewards, focusing on phonics and sight words.
  • Teach Your Monster to Read: A free, engaging game that helps children develop early reading skills.
Research different programs and consider your child's age, interests, and any specific areas of reading they might need support with.
Q: What is the best reading scheme?
A: The "best" reading scheme depends partly on what aspects of reading instruction you wish to prioritize. Here's a breakdown of popular approaches:
  • Phonics-based schemes: These focus on teaching children the relationships between letters and sounds, helping them decode words (ex: Children Learning Reading)
  • Whole language schemes: Emphasize learning words by sight and using context clues to understand meaning.
  • Balanced literacy schemes: Combine elements of both phonics and whole language approaches.
Many experts advocate for explicit phonics instruction, especially in the early stages of reading development. This provides children with the tools to confidently approach unfamiliar words, a crucial skill for independent reading.

Conclusion

The Children Learning Reading program offers a structured and research-backed approach to developing essential early literacy skills. Its emphasis on phonemic awareness and phonics gives children the necessary tools to decode words and become fluent readers. The numerous success stories from parents, along with testimonials, point to the program's potential to significantly enhance a child's reading journey.
While the program won't be a magical solution for every single child, I believe it's a worthwhile investment for many parents, particularly those who:
  • Desire a clear and systematic approach to teaching reading at home.
  • Have a child struggling with traditional reading methods.
  • Seek to give their child a head start with early reading skills.
The ultimate measure of success is if the program ignites a love of reading within your child. Equipping children with the confidence and skills to explore the world of books can significantly influence their overall development and open doors to a lifetime of learning.

2024.02.21 09:40 MojoPin94 My "review' of Angel Dust and King For A Day, a sequel to a post on here a little while ago. This is not meant to be a serious review, and more of a conversational talk about each song, what I do and don't like about them, and which album I think is better. Grammatical issues are present.

Angel Dust.
Land of Sunshine
Kicking off Angel Dust is Land Of Sunshine. The medium tempo makes the song slightly boring, but i cant imagine it any other speed. The circus organ and laughing reminds me A LOT of Mr. Bungles debut album, but more mainstream. Land of Sunshine is like a taste test of Mr. Bungle to me rather than a test of FNM, which is a shame. As for being the opener of the album, it’s a perfect start, perfectly weird enough to be worthy of angel dust but also straightforward enough to be accepted by new listeners, myself included. The lyrical content is impressive, taken mainly from fortune cookies, and the section where guitar drops out and Patton and Gould are holding it down with vocals and that FUNKY bassline is my favourite part of the song, tied with the almost operatic ending. But, that being said, I do not think it is Faith No More at their best, or even their second best. On repeat playthroughs, I often skip this one, because I think Caffeine would have been an even better opener than this.
6/10
Caffeine
Caffeine is a fucking banger. The ¾ time signature gives some much welcomed variation to the album, and it almost feels like a metal waltz. The keys are probably the most atmospheric on the album, and the amount of reverb on the guitars gives the track a cold and clinical feeling to it, as Molly Sanborn said in her blind listen on YouTube. Mikes vocals are pretty good in the verse, but they take another layer of amazing from 1:54 onwards. This bridge melody and keyboard interconnection is one of my favourite musical moments on this album. That bass riff (you know the one im talking about) gets me hyped every time and makes me bop my head like no tomorrow. “I'M WARNING YOU!!” section. The only thing I wish was better was the synth levels, they're just too quiet. That's why i think the Sheffield gig performance is better than the studio version (on imposter syndrome, for all Spotify listeners out there). Excellent ending, the reverb gives me chills.
10/10
Midlife Crisis
This is the lead single off angel dust, and its potentially one of the first things people had heard of Patton’s writing style and contributions, if they weren't paying attention to Mr. Bungle. But, I'm gonna say it right here right now; the scream mix is the superior version. It does away with the pointless “its a midlife crisis” section after the chorus, and the mixing gives the track a bit more weight to it. But. The song is still the same. And the song is amazing. The choice to have the repeated e note played on the bass was genius, reminds me of proper hip hop, which is fitting because this is the most hip hop infused song on the album. The chorus has had me singing in my car more times than i can remember, and the car thief breakdown is genius. (YEAH!) The middle eastern tinge of the synth on the bridge is a really nice addition. The fade out I'm not a massive fan of, I think they could have done something really cool with that car thief sample in this section, but I'm biased, as fade outs and key changes can fuck themselves in music. If the scream mix was the original recording, 8/10 track. Unfortunately,
7.5/10
RV
RV is a strange song. I often skip it, and need to be in a specific mood to listen to it. But whenever i do end up hearing it, its an excellent redneck anthem and a song for all the slackjaws out there. The lyrics are genuinely funny, and this song sounds like a long musical skit, if that makes sense. People saying Jim Martin was a boring guitarist obviously haven't listened or tried to learn this one, some really fucking cool chord choices, and the choice of simplicity really benefits with the dull and dreary vibe of this song. The bridge (throw a belt over the shower curtain rod) is so enlightening, contrasting with the grim, almost suicidal lyrics. Love the abrupt ending to this one, doesn't overstay its welcome. Good song.
6.5/10
Smaller and Smaller
A massive highlight on this album for me. I love this one from the very beginning to the very end. The piano and strings add an incredibly atmospheric vibe to this song. A trend I'm noticing with this album is the string and guitars reverb, making each song sound like they're almost performed live. The chorus is probably my 3rd favourite moment on this album, i remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away by the sheer power of Patton's voice, like a million slaves all chanting in unison (BITE!!) The bass/drum/synth/aboriginal chanting is extraordinarily groovy, and it semi reminds me of the shuffle song, or Virus for all you super fans. The solo is great, I believe Metal Sucks said something about an old man falling and trying to walk, which i never understood, but it still stands as a pretty good solo, a nice addition to the small martin solo catalogue. This songs ending could last forever, Roddy doing a perfect job in adding tension to the track and a massive suspense buildup. I wish they played this live once. Why are you so stupid, Faith No More?
9/10
Everythings Ruined
The 3rd single off this record, and I don't think they picked a better set of singles to accompany it. Whenever i have to describe this song to someone, the words that always come up without fault are these: Uplifiting, and melancholic. Its interesting what one instrument and a creative mind can add to a song, completely changing its vibe. Shout out to you Roddy. The verse of Patton singing out of key also adds a lot of tension, and is another case of Pattons strange writing style that just seems to work. The guitar riff before the pre chorus never fails to have me looking like Jim in the music video, bopping my head and grinning like a loon. An explosion of sound is the chorus, where every element comes together, accompanied by some deceptively high notes sung by Patton. Guitar panning r to L. The lyrics in this song are honestly kind of sad, an autobiographical account of Patton's view on himself in terms of an industry since becoming a pretty large player in the music scene. They’re deceptively cheery melody is absolutely perfect for this song, and this is my favourite martin solo by a long shot. Again, MetalSucks compared it to being the musical equivalent to 2 women talking to you and a gay guy gives you a compliment. I don't get that from the ending, but its unresolving/resolving piano ascension is ingenious. I love this song.
10/10
Malpractice
I always skip this one. This is my least favourite off the album, which is strange considering its a Patton piece. None of the verse riffs are really impressive to me, apart from the riff beginning at 37 seconds, and the odd time signatures feel like they were written to be odd, rather than naturally fitting in with the song. The chorus bells reminds me of a thunderstorm in a grey, dilapidated castle, and this is another highlight of the track, but then back to the old eh riff of the verse. Again, pre chorus riff is groovy and in the pocket, the chorus still being great, and then begins my favourite section of the song. When i first heard this track, i was stoned laying on my bed, the entire album playing from my speaker. The lullaby section was so pleasing to my ear that when the drum sample came crashing in, i jumped and actually got scared for one second. But then, it's back to a really cool section of descending strings, and I'm sorry to say it, an average ending to a song with really boring bits coupled with musical genius. I really wish I liked this track, but its just the curse of Yoko being included in a song I suppose, even if it is just a sample.
4/10
Kindergarten
I feel a strange connection to this song, and I remember the first time I heard it, watching my then girlfriends' netball game. I got so lost during it that when the quarter ended she came up to me and asked me to pay attention to the game, but what I was hearing was infinitely more interesting to me than netball (Sorry). The bassline is funky, and I've always wondered what riff martins' contribution to this song was. I assume the harmonic section, which is just ‘cool’ sounding, you know? The only Billy bass solo in FNM discography, its short, sweet, and perfectly melodic. The entire last minute of this song is just excellence. The short guitar additions to the riff are so nicely placed and restrained, and that harmonied lead is epic to say the least. Massively underappreciated track.
8/10
Be Aggressive
The perfect song NOT to play to someone if you're trying to get them into FNM. Trust me, let them find this one themselves. Not to say it isn't a banger, it's the only faith no more song me and my band covered while we were still in school on the last day, compete with everyone playing in gender swapped clothes and me stripping down to just my underpants and a small dress covering my midriff. Bras were thrown into the crowd, and everyone was involved in the classic cheerleader chant. But, people did ask me exactly what i was singing about afterwards, which led to some awkward conversations and some not very convinced ex schoolmates. The organ at the start sets up the song to be something completely different to the funk jam it actually is, with Jim's guitar being mixed perfectly to allow the bass to shine in this song. The chant is as i said classic, and the feeling of a bunch of teens singing BE AGGRESSIVE with no idea they were referring to dick sucking was the funnest way to end my school time. The layering of the organs in the buildup to the intro section again is phenomenal and never fails to get me moving. The guitar solo flub is almost better than the actual note, giving an urgent and ‘live’ feel to the track. Harmonies in the outro are excellent. This song reminds me of the 60’s in its instrumentation. And that leads us to my personal favourite song on this album, and probably my favourite FNM song in general.
8/10 for the memories, 7/10 for the song
A Small Victory
This song is bliss. The eastern influence on the string section is refreshing to hear, and i always love the harmonies with the guitar. And then that chorus. You know what, I've said enough about this track. Just go and listen to the song, enjoy the percussiveness of Patton's rapping, and the absolute headbanging perfection of the instrumental section after the chorus. This song fills me with pure joy. Also, the remix by R-evolution is pretty cool.
10/10, better than Caffeine and Everything’s Ruined.
Crack Hitler
The last song to click with me on this album, and probably the one i revisit the least on this project. It's just too repetitive for me. But the vibe is awesome. I wish i knew more about the eponymous ‘Crack Hitler’, i reckon id enjoy the song more. That intro though, is amazing. The highlight of this track, for me at least, is the confusing bassline, nearly impossible to differentiate from the guitar track, and again, Roddy's synth work. This album has the best Roddy features on it by far for me, which is a shame because his work on this album continued onto KFAD would've made that album click a lot easier for me. The march section is also a highlight, but other than that, its just a perfectly serviceable disco song.
6/10
Jizzlobber
I don't have much unique to say about Jizzlobber, cause this song is just the definition of heavy as fuck. The bass is hypnotising, the guitars with a touch of chorus on it adds perfect dynamics, the strings are dissonant as fuck and remind me of a horror film, and the vocals sound like Patton swallowed a cheese grater, until it gets to the whirlwind guitar section, where the song takes a strangely Alice in Chains feel. I think this song is nearly as good as the other 10s on this album, but sadly, it falls just short. Even though the organ outro is fucking haunting.
9/10
Midnight Cowboy (Theme From)
Pro Tip: if you begin this album, skip RV, go to the gym and get a decent workout in, you should be done by around the time this song starts playing. It is probably the most proud moment someone of my age (18) can feel, walking back out to the car, cool from the sweat and the uplifting and soaring verses blasting through your headphones. The part beginning at 2:16 is sonic bliss for me, and as soon as it begins to get old, it retreats to the acoustic guitars and the calming nature of the melodica. This is a perfectly gorgeous ending to a nearly perfect ugly, beautiful, heavy, and soothing ride of an album...
8/10
Easy
...which is why I despise the inclusion of easy on this album. I understand why the company decided to add it, but why the fuck would you lazily tack it on to the end, with no flow into it or even a sensical tracklist inclusion, like in between kindergarten and be aggressive, or malpractice and kindergarten, or just replacing malpractice in general? This song annoys me so much, and i simultaneously love it to pieces. Memories of drunken singing at parties to this song leave a special place in my heart for this song, and hell, its the commodores, of course it's going to be a good song. Also, The Commodores original is better. Sorry.
7/10. Should’ve stayed as a single.
Das Schutzenfest
I unironically love this song and know every word to it in German. I don’t know why they would write something like, and I don't give a shit.
7/10
As The Worm Turns
This song is the punkiest, hip hoppiest, and coolest track in this era of FNM. I know it was a chuck original, from the We Care A Lot days, but it has aged incredibly. I believe this is one of the best vocal performances by Patton in general, but this song sounds like proto-Limp Bizkit or something. Which isn't too bad, it’s just been sullied by the LB slander. If you want to hear a cool LB song in the similar vein of this song, check out ‘Counterfeit’ from 3$BY. Anyway, Fred Durst shill over, this song is great. The percussive nature of the guitar in the outro is my favourite part.
9/10
The World Is Yours
Why this song wasn’t included on the album is a question that won’t ever be answered in a way other than sequencing issues. Which is blatantly wrong, it would have fit completely fine in between the funny and boppy ‘Be Aggressive’ and the positive and poppy ‘A Small Victory’. This song oozes of the word unnerving. The effect on Patton's voice in the verses, and the interworking bassline and guitar is like a maze of sound. The only thing I wish was done better on this song is Patton's vocal melody leaving the second chorus, it's just not a satisfying, or complete note choice in my opinion. The bridge, including the famous R. Budd Dwyer suicide sample is my favorite part of the song, Patton spitting venom and clipping the mic when he says, and I quote, “Fucking”. If every song could have the same vibe and eeriness as this song does from 3:05 – 4:22, I would be a very happy bloke indeed, as that indescribable feeling that section gives me is my favourite musical sound and ‘vibe’. Any recommendations like this song would be greatly appreciated.
8/10
BONUS: Virus (The Shuffle Song)
This song is the crown jewel of any FNM fanatics collection, so rare and mysterious only about 2 and a half minutes existing on the whole internet, apart from some lucky cassette owners. Starting off with an orchestra tuning, and an electronic sampled percussion beat, this song sounds a lot more positive than most of what preceded it, with the same feeling as A Small Victory present, from the harmonised guitars and keys, with Billy's bouncing bassline groove underneath. Patton's vocals come in with an interesting harmony, and then my favourite section of the song comes in, with Patton doing his angel dust era ‘rap’. If you look through the angel dust sessions VHS, you can see them working on the backing track for a bass solo, and a return to the intro with ocean waves crashing and seagulls flying overhead. If only they would finally release it, or someone finished it themselves. I don’t think its fair to give this song a score, yet...
Overall Thoughts
This album would have been the biggest breath of fresh air for rock fans of the early 90’s. A band heavier than a lot of the rest, with a synth section which helped take a lot of the edge off and expand the sound of the band while creating their own signature tone... this album is a masterpiece. A lot of the time I've wondered what made Faith No More so satisfying to my ears, and I believe it's the combination of the heavy, classic metal guitars and occasional bass, combined with Roddy's often poppy and hooky keys. It adds a whole new aspect of music, that makes me wonder why every single band doesn't have a prominent keys section. This album differs from KFAD in that it seems to tread much more varied areas within each song, take ‘Be Aggressives’ creepy organ and funk metal chant combo, or ‘Smaller and Smaller’s’ Middle Eastern metal meets funk ambience. This is a nearly perfect album, and its missteps don't change the fact that it is one of the best ever released.
OVERALL SCORE: 8.5/10
King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime.
Get Out
From the opening chord this album sounds different from the last. A lot more empty space is present in this album, with the guitars being opened up to make up the majority of the soundscape. There are no keys on this opener, which is a massive departure from the “FNM” sound, but simultaneously refreshing to the usual fan. First thoughts on this track is that its an extremely straightforward song, short and fast paced, and written entirely by Patton. Its a fun intro, but nothing super amazing or anything to write home about. The complete lack of keys may come as an unpleasant surprise to FNM listeners coming from angel dust, which is why i think absolute zero should have stayed as KFAD’s opening track.
6/10
Ricochet
The focus on guitars on this album is a really nice change from the relatively audible guitar from Angel Dust, while still retaining the ‘massive’ FNM sound. Stripped back instrumentation with same impact, the first instance of keys is on this record, a pretty nice accompaniment to treys massive guitar tone, which unfortunately makes the keys and guitars trade places in the soundscape from angel dust, meaning that the the keys are more of a texture to the guitars, rather than the opposite from the previous album. These lyrics are pretty vague, but it’s genuinely known this song is written after the suicide of Kurt Cobain, and probably related to that topic via its demo's title (Nirvana). This is the first single off KFAD, and I think it does an excellent job at introducing the new sound to old fans, showing a more punchy and raw faith no more then has been seen before.

Evidence
This groovy and sultry jazz track which deals with the topic of infidelity is a major highlight of this record. Released as the 3rd single, this song over in Australia especially became a massive hit, and remains as one of faith no mores trademark songs, and how can it not be? This is a track with very prominent key work from Bottum, one of the few on the whole album, and treys often meandering guitar is a perfect addition to this song, reminding me a lot of RV from angel dust. The bass on this track is some of Goulds best work, and this songs vibe reminds me a lot of edge of the world from “The Real Thing”. Patton distantly vocalising evidence over the return to the intro is a demonstration of Patton's ambient vocal quality and improvement since angel dust, demonstrated through Patton's more restrained vocal techniques on this record. He seems to take a more professional and smooth vocal quality on this record, a departure from the wild experimentation of angel dust and the bombastic soaring vocals from The Real Thing.

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies
I think this is a perfectly serviceable straightforward rock song. A lot of my friends and people across the internet always highlight this one, but personally i think its perfectly alright. However, its got some extremely iconic lyrics in it, especially the quieter verses, and the chorus is a nice, heavy return to the intro chord progression. Treys enjoyment of harmonics are on display in the pre-chorus, and seen all over the album when you pay attention. I honestly don’t have much to add about this track, just that I wish I “got it”.

Star A.D.
Now this track is great. The rumbling and thick bassline from Gould could fit right in a big band jazz group, which is exactly what FNM are replicating on this track, from the horns to the big exaggerated drumming, a returning trey Spruance perfectly complimenting this track with strange chords and interesting solos, and the few and far between inputs from Roddy on the organs are a really nice touch. I think this song and the next track are the highlights of Patton's vocals on this album, with his bombastic delivery of the chorus just taking the grandiosity of this song to new heights. This song sounds like a completely different band, and Its one of my favourites on this record as a result. The only issue, again, being the lack of keys, but I think the inclusion of a horn section makes up for it.
9/10
Cuckoo for Caca
The heaviest song on the record, Patton screams and raps over a non-stop assault from the drums, about consumerism and death and shit. This is one of those songs you show your mate to tell them about mikes singing ability, with those screams being absolutely blood curdling. The Primus influence is clear in the bridge and bass break, with the synth section being one of my favourite moments on this album, and really nailing the point that Roddy is missing from this album home. The descending organs at the beginning of each verse reminds me a lot of bungle, but maybe that's just a connection from hearing too much killer clown music.
8/10
Caralho Voador
A track I have warmed up to a lot since listening to this record, this bossa nova groove is the first time mike Patton decided to sing in a different language, something he would continue through the rest of his career. The keyboard solo is dreamy, and reminds me of something Steely Dan would release. Percussion on this track changes a lot from the usual drumkit setup, but my initial gripe with this song remains, and that's that I don't think the chorus is particularly interesting and to me at least, it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the song. Even with some really cool basslines from Gould, the highlights of this track is the keys and the quieter verses. If it were up to me, this one would've stayed on the cutting room floor.
5/10
Ugly in the Morning
This track is interesting. The bass and drums seem to become one big force, and the guitars are washed out and open, giving a large auditorium feeling to the track. Patton's reverb drenched vocals add to this feeling, making it sound like he's singing in a church or something. Treys harmonics are back on this track, making up the entire verse chord progression (apart from the end). This track is atmospheric, and gives off an unsettling, unsatisfying feeling to the ear, which is beneficial to Patton's self deprecating lyrics, leading me to believe he's telling the story of someone suffering from multiple personality disorder. His almost bark like delivery of the title is painful to listen to, and the minute long outro is the highlight of this track, as Patton ramps up in intensity as the instruments begin to lose pace and end in a flurry of indistinguishable noise. Love this track.
7/10
Digging the Grave
Like the gentle art, this song first struck me as a standard rock song, but as I listened to the album more and more I grew to love this track. Patton's voice takes it away with this one, soaring gracefully over the heavy instrumentation during those choruses. The drum break and subsequent instrumental section is a massive highlight of this song, and the chuggy section after is great. The violent screaming in the outro of the song is visceral and in your face, as if Patton is staring you down. Great song.
7.5/10
Take this Bottle
This song is extremely tender. A country ballad, it tells the story of a man with an alcohol addiction, with one of the most emotionally open lyrics Patton has ever sung. The swells contributed by Spruance's saturated but warm guitar tone send waves of emotion through any listener with a sore heart. Speaking of the lyrics, Patton's delivery is crystal clear throughout this entire track, easily hitting those high notes without a hint of strain. Roddy's piano add a sombre western theme, like when a cowboy would ride off into a sunset. I also love his note choices in the section from 3:17 onwards, its extremely satisfying to my ear. The lower harmonies in the return to verse is extremely soft and comforting, and the fade out on this slightly cornier track is completely deserved.
8/10
King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime
I have been waiting to talk about this song. I love this one so much its not funny, this IS the Roddy Track on this album. Mikes low vocals are fun, and billy's groovy bass is perfectly aligned with treys country-ish acoustic jangle of an e and F #. And then a taste of the ‘chorus’ kicks in. And then it hits you that this track has the capacity to – at some point – take off. And as you realise this, its over. Back to the intro with a slightly different vocal melody from Patton. And then the hurricane picks you up. Listen from 2:15 onwards, and come back. I’ll wait. Bordin really shines in this section, keeping that absolute killer beat down. The use of a wah is really impressive here, as treys kept it pretty straight with the effects through this album. And then its over again. The storm has passed, and you’re left with the longest, most haunting outro FNM ever did. The song was about a man doing drugs at a party and then subsequently overdosing and dying, with a silly look in his eyes. Chilling. Best song on the record.
10/10
What a Day
Is it just me or does this song sound like an outtake from DOOM (1993)? This song is great, Gould's bass really kicks it out of the park on this track. Treys tone is shown its use in chugging too, and those chorus notes, are absolutely heavenly. Roddy is sadly just buried in the mix, you can barely even tell he's there until the very outro. This is a short, but extremely fun track. Reminds me of kickstand by Soundgarden in that respect. Also the scream outro is great. Damn this ones great.
9/10
The Last to Know
This song took me a very long time to understand. The last for me to click, the last to know is a great song. Its grandiose nature sort of made me turn off it a bit, but honestly after I stuck with it long enough to listen to Patton's vocals in the choruses, I really ended up liking this one a lot. This track features quite a bit of Roddy, which is appreciated a lot, even though he's buried in the verses. “can't you see, that there's only one me, and that me is me?” is one of the best lyrics ever written in my humble opinion, which is followed by what sounds like a slowed down Primus riff. Someone tell me if I'm wrong, but is treys solo just improv? Because that's kinda what it sounds like, and therefore it's a whole lot of not much, and nothing really to write home about. Damn.
6/10
Just a Man
This song is excellent, and my introduction to KFAD with that video of him climbing the camera pole. This song sounds like strange jazz combined with classic Chinese music, and its great! It works perfectly. And then it begins to sound like an Elvis classic, which is only exemplified later with the women's choir joining in. I like to think of this song as FNM’s Hey Jude, they have a very similar feeling to me when I listen to each. The Icarus interlude is great, and excellent in building suspense, and then it unleashes to an almost gospel choir church outro. This section reminds me of Hey Jude the most out of all. This is a perfect album closer; I love this song.
10/10
Absolute Zero
Why this was cut from the album I have no clue. A tune written entirely by Patton alone, this song was originally going to be KFAD’s opening track, which I previously mentioned. I think this would have been a million times better and kicks Get Outs ass out of the park. The intro sounds like a soap opera theme, and then the guitars chug in. The inverted power chords Trey uses in the bridges are great, and soon after that the chorus arrives. Patton's vocals on this track are absolutely mesmerising, with excellent use of delay and reverb. The ending march is excellent, I truly love this B-side.
9/10
I Started a Joke
This song is like the less successful sequel to Easy. With what sounds like a drum machine replacing Mike Bordin, the verses feel slightly electronic, and Patton's soaring vocal over the chorus is heavenly. I don’t really have much to say about this one, except that martin short was in the music video.
7.5/10
I Won't Forget You
This song should have replaced ‘the gentle art.’ It's a hundred times better, with a funk feel in the intro due to the bass, and almost chili pepper chord choices. The dissonant bass slams are excellent, and Treys changing chords in the verses are amazing. The chorus is metal as shit, and the wandering bassline to screaming spurts of distorted guitar are just pure serotonin. Also, did you know this song has a key change? At 2:02, the song moves up a semitone. How cool is that? And then treys delay effect on the guitar is just ingenious. The outro is the only average part of the song, I just wish they broke out again into a final chorus like thing. Should’ve been on the album.
10/10
Hippie Jam Song
This song I believe was recorded during the Angel Dust sessions, or sometime in 1992-1993, with Jim Martin on guitars. Patton’s more nasal and high pitch vocals remind me of the angel dust era, or even the perfect crime era. This song is just a vibe. Mike is saying a whole lot of nothing, and the guitars are kind of repetitive, but it's perfect for the vibe. It reminds me a bit of summer and smoking weed on the beach. The organs are a great addition, and when martin gets to solo, it's a great listen, again showing that martin could write some really earwormy guitar solos. Also, Billy is going nuts on the bass all through this song, damn what a hidden gem.
8/10
Overall Thoughts
This album is very different to Angel Dust, but I think it works in the bands favour. You may have noticed that overall, I don’t have as much to say about KFAD as I did Angel Dust, but that’s kind of how this album works. Preferring to trade angel Dusts monumental scale for shorter and in your face genre-contained songs, this album sounds like a fever dream condensed into a genre flipping jukebox. Down to earth instrumentation really helps this album, though the short sections we get that are reminiscent of Dust are few and far between. The albums' central theme is more introspective and personal than Patton's other work which fit the songs more grounded tone. Songs like ‘Get Out’ and ‘Ugly in the Morning’ lyrically containing a lot of self-deprecation, and ‘Take This Bottle’ alongside ‘I Won't Forget You’ hold a lot of romantic weight to them, even if the romance is left in the past. For a fan of Faith No More coming fresh off Angel Dust, this album may have put them off, including myself, as it took me the longest time to truly understand this record, compared to FNM’s discography. With B-Sides included, this album is almost enough to put up a fair fight against Angel Dust. Excluded, KFAD falls short of the massive expectations put up after Angel Dust, by quite a long way. It’s not that the songs are bad, or even average; they’re just completely different in feeling and sound almost like a different band. And while I praise that, I prefer the sound of Angel Dust by a country mile.
OVERALL SCORE: 7/10

2024.02.05 02:45 -particularpenguin- Leveled readers?

Daughter is in kinder in a relatively affluent district. Her teacher does phonics in bursts (has a sound wall they recite daily), and does some blending / decoding, but also does small groups with leveled readers (and that's what she sends home.) and some 3 cuing. (I mean, how could you not guess when you're asking a kindergartener to sound out "potato" when they're still working on CVC.)
I've read all about the push to science of reading and It really resonates. We've been doing decodable books in an explicit sequence at home and it's been wonderful.
Would you push on the admin at all? The report cards have reading levels and I know they use Lucy calkins for a curriculum (though I think our teacher ignores it).
Will I get labeled as that annoying parent and shunned? I reached out to the principal and now I'm worried our teacher is avoiding me...

It became not just difficult but downright impossible to maintain the ambassadorial walk. The Utahraptor was fast. They galloped out of Ty's view.
He removed the robes and tied them to his waist. It was hot, he was sweaty, and the higher oxygen concentration made him lightheaded as well as panting and coughing helplessly. In fact, he felt like a large boulder was on his chest, weighing him down, and he felt like drowning in increments, when the alveoli in his lungs filled with water, slowly making his lungs unable to take in air normally.
Ty was sure the assumed large birds' ancestor was doing this on purpose! But while the raptor did know nothing of him, an arboreal mammal that never existed at the same time on Earth, he knew some facts and some conjectures about the dinosaurs.
They had no idea humans used to be persistence predators and did easily learn to track. Ty was going to run him down. His determination was steadfast.
He used to be a Child Ground Scout and later Youth Space Scout. Tracking had always been his "thing", his bravura.
Ty took a scarf - formerly a part of the official ambassador assemblage - and tied it around his head to keep sweat out of his eyes. He needed his eyes to find the small changes in the environment caused by an irritated, predatory dinosaur stomping through the lush vegetation.
The large raptor relied on speed alone, not caring if he left telltale signs literally everywhere. It was very easy to track him. At one point, he crossed the path with some even larger dinosaurs. They moved slower though and munched on vegetation high in the canopy. It was no challenge for Ty to see what path to follow.
Then Ty heard the Utahraptor talking to someone. He listened and donned the ambassadorial robes and used the water bottle on him to drink some and splash rest on his face and wrists to cool down.
He heard the Utahraptor saying: "I am sorry, your Illustriousness. The ambassador wondered off somewhere. I looked back and only saw the tree-eaters. I think we need to round them all up and destroy them. And the next time our space gets violated, we just shoot them down."
A voice sure of their power answered: "Yuyu, I know how much you hate strangers, and for a good reason, too. But are you sure the ambassador got lost on their own? You didn't gallop too fast to follow?"
"I would never.."started the wily reptile, but their liege lord cut them off: "Remember who you are talking with!"
"I might have kept a pace leisurely to me but perhaps not as relaxed to one of their lesser form and smaller brain capacity," amended "Yuyu" more cannily.
That's the moment Ty chose to leisurely, using the ambassadorial walk to appear before the ruler. He didn't walk right up to them but stayed back, kneeled, and bowed his head almost to the ground.
Yuyu's eyes almost bulged out of their sockets , so surprised they were. To him, it was like Ty would have appeared from thin air. He radioed to the smaller raptors to confirm the shuttle of the strangers was still there.
"You found your way here just fine, did you?"asked the ruler.
" Easily, Your Illustriousness," Ty answered, still kneeling, "the large raptor... Yuyu?... kindly left a path easily followed even with my shorter legs and smaller brain size."
"Raptor, you said," was the ruler's reply.
"Oh, I am so sorry, Your Highness. We have excavated many fossils of your people and studied them. So many people, children included, are fascinated about you and the era you lived on our shared planet. We call the planet Earth." explained Ty.
"We called it "Rry-u-uit", 'Safe place with family'," educated the ruler.
"Ro-u-it," tried Ty and then apologized butchering such a good name. Then he asked The Question, the one occupying at least half of his thinking capacity ever since he saw the first living dinosaur: "I'm sorry for being blunt, but I just have to know. Why and how did you end up here?"
"It is a little longer story. Too long to listen to on your knees, I dare say. Why don't we go inside where the air is cooler and we can enjoy some savory snacks and refreshing drinks!" offered the esteemed reptile.
"I'd be delighted, Your Highness," was the human ambassador's actually delighted reply.
The ruler, Yuzu, four guards, and Ty walked inside the stone masoned building with very thick walls. The stone was vaguely yellow and blocked sunlight, and it's heeting perfectly.
When Ty's eyes got accustomed to the dimness, he became to see that the masoned stone was actually an expertly and artistically carved relief. The reliefs depicted different kinds of dinosaurs and vegetation. The style was unlike anything he had seen before, which made sense due to the tens of millions of years apart.
He looked up and saw glass-like windows high up. Well, glass is basically rigid liquid, so it doesn't have to be made out of sand.
Sea sponges and some other animals have skeletons of glass-like silica. At the time before the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, there might have had larger animals like that, or in greater mass like algae.
Or just obsidian or glass beads - impact spherules - from asteroid or meteorite impacts, lightning and volcanic eruptions created.
When the impact is extremely energetic, it can actually send hot material to impact on the Moon. The Moon has other materials besides silicates that can end up into the impact spherules.
To see space and go into space, glass in the form of lenses would be almost compulsory.
Ty's head started to hurt with so many new ideas and understanding how - well, alien - the dinosaurs were. And their society and technology had advanced in space and on this new planet for sixty-six million years. Humanity had existed barely 300 000 years. To these ancients, they must seem like unruly children.
Considering that mammals - in the end of their ancestors living on Earth - were true vermins scurrying climbing, digging, swimming, and gliding underfoot. A nuisance. A growing nuisance, since mammals had started to diversify, keeping the space of flowering plants emerging.
That led Ty wondering what the dinosaurs brought with them to space. He shook his head to clear it a bit. He turned to look at the reliefs. The story was depicted there.
The reliefs were arranged to an order. Ty, at first, didn't know how to read. But then he realized they were arranged in a series of small Fibonacci spirals that use the golden ratio (φ "phi").
"You recognize the spiral of life?"asked the dinosaur ruler with an interested voice for the first time.
"Yes. We call it the golden spiral or Fibonacci spiral after the mathematician. They are both found in nature and are very similar."answered Ty. "May I?"
The overlord gestured to the sequence of reliefs. Ty started from the innermost relief and continued outward.
"Happy living on Earth - I mean Rro-u-it. Booming society, buildings, and technology. Then...volcanoes erupt, one after another, poisonous gasses and material spew in the air, preventing sunlight from reaching the surface. The discovery that worse volcano eruptions are eminent and finding a huge asteroid coming straight towards Rro-u-it. " Ty narrated his understanding of what was on the wall.
He continued: "A lot of scientific research in a hurry. Then, building space rockets to take you from the he gravity to space docks. There you put people's belongings to storage and them into... Cryopods? You take seeds and cuttings and roots with you, as well as meat printers and hydroponics. I'm not sure, but there are cabins, a limited amount. Oh, are they so that people are awake taking turns?
"Yes. We didn't want the populace we managed to save, age differently. And they had to reproduce. Also, science couldn't be forgotten or research stopped."
Ty listened to the explanation like a kindergartener a fairytale. " So you didn't have a way to travel faster than light?"he asked.
"Not when we started. The indefatigable research yielded several improvements and upgrades along the way. We stopped to mine asteroids and planets for raw materials, primary commodity we used temporary manufacturing plants to create everything we needed from fuel to completely new ships. Still, generations were born and died on our ramble amongst the plasma orbs of space."the leader said with melancholy.
"Plasma orbs. I like that."commented Ty, "This is a phenomenal origin story. Such perseverance and fortitude. You are amazing!"
"Shall we?"was the response. Ty was a bit lost until he noticed that seating and a table with beverages and hors d'oeuvres were laid behind them. There was a comfortable seating for the large and aged ruler, and a much smaller version for him, presumably. It had a support beam edging it. It was in all likelihood meant for a child dinosaur. The thought made him blush in the back of his neck, but he sat down after the monarch had done so.

2024.01.23 19:56 Big-Ticket9592 Dream sequence Theory

This is for Banban Kindergarten- i literally just thought of this while sleeping. The dream sequence that are shown by captain Flynn that shown to us the parent looking for our children. I believe that viewpoint of our kid that we are looking for.
Parents or adults usually have are kinder tone to children and the way banban (the doctor) great us in the dream as how adult speak to a child waking up.
Also captain Flynn mentioned about how it was too late for kid before showing us the dream where at the end we get killed by a bus. As matpat mentioned could to do with authority so therefore the kid could be dead or taken by scientist.
