Jacket description
“Once, the edges of the map read “Here be Dragons”.
With the discovery of the American continent, Europeans of all kinds flooded across the Atlantic with the hope of forging their destinies in the New World. In 1764, the Barron-Abercrombie Speculation Company issued a decree for men and women to settle the Pennsylvanian frontier, and many brave souls answered the call. They came in their multitudes, traversing mountains, crossing rivers, and passing through dense, twisted woods of oak, elm, maple, eastern hemlock, and poplar that unfolded over untold miles of stark wilderness.
They did not know what waited for them out there. They should have kept the dragons on the map.”

I spent a couple years picking over it, but had the opportunity to spend a lot more time on it in the last few months. Now the first draft is done. with the first 60% somewhat polished and gets rougher towards the end. I am doing a pass through so I can punch up some of the plot thread conclusions.

2024.04.05 22:29 Opposite_Swing880 Here's an idea for a Spec Evolution project. Earlier Siberian Traps Eruption

Instead of the Siberian Traps erupting at the end of the Permian period they would erupt at the end of the Carboniferous period. This causes Amniotes to be hit a lot more severely which completely wipes out synapsids and diminishes diapsids greatly. However the mass extinction is less severe because of the healthier state of the planet.
This means no mammals and much less reptiles during the Mesozoic.
Amphibians and pan-amniotes would become the dominant groups. Other pan-tetrapods such as Rhizodonts also survive and fill many niches. Diapsids fill minor niches that synapids would in this timeline.

Discussing the Brief Origin of Triapsida and Protoargoland

Introduction

Paleontology has gained significant impact on speculative evolution and speculative biology. From arthropods like Dinocariids and Trilobites, to Amphibians like Temnospondyls and Lepospondyls, science and imagination has it all. In reptiles, the entry of its notoriety are all contained to be Diapsids, amniotes with two holes behind the eye. Many were mainly Pseudosuchia(croc-like archosaurs) and Avemetatarsalians(bird-like archosaurs) and Squamata. Albeit of course, tectonic plates factor the existing number of fossils discovered, but there's more to the story in our blue planet's history than meets the surface eventually.

This brief discussion talks about the birth of Triapsids, and a protocontinent that shifted alongside their legacy.

Origin

Triapsida is a clade of sauropsids within Amniota that differs from diapsids being that it had three temporal fenestrae (holes) behind the eye socket. The use of the fenestra was once clouded in debates and arguments until recently it was found to effect almost entirely on eating motion. With an additional hole, it allows the ancient creature to efficiently press their jaws longer, increase bite pressure, reduce weakening of bones, and increasing the flexibility of which eating motion is specialized. It is was challenged whether they are joined within Archosauriformes or as its own, but recent consensus stated it is separated from the Archosauriformes, and no common ancestor as of date split by the end of the Permian period.

Basal diapsids, like petrolacosaurus and holotype ASCD 32220, are areaoscelidians (Credit: Pterosaur Heresies)
Triapsida were likely came from a basal diapsid clade Araeoscelidia 260 million years ago from Carboniferous strata (302mya) until the later Kungurian epoch(275mya). Paleontologists discovered a holotype specimen [ASCD 32220] within the Barradeen Formation, just 50 kilometers off west region of Quebec in East Canada. It is currently recovered as a fragmented skull, but the holes were evident to have three holes in a triangular fashion. They noted to be an araeoscelidian based on the basal features between all descended sauropsids after it. Being that the skull of the holotype ASCD 32220 was one of the members of the clade, this possibly concludes Araeoscledia's last known date of their existence extended 15 million years aftermath, making it a 'Lazarus taxon'(silent geologic gap between the lower limit of a specie's last existence to the upper limit where it later reappeared) .
This was a start of the discovery of a tetrapod having the first three temporals ever known. But the data was never proposed it as a triapsid because of the "Lack of extensive modification to the two larger fanestrae and little change of the skull denies the ability to have a full-formed condition regardless of its position thereof" as one member described. Still, it has a triapsid-like formality to describe it, applying as one but not a clade of its own. Of course the holotype was found by a small team of local researchers. Found to have one specimen of its existence restricts any outside researcher attempting to collect additional data, putting a hold to the three-hole study.
The beginnings of studying Triapsida started out as a functionally different animal that may have originated by a basal animal of its own. With science, the doubt would seem eminent, but studies like this are providing more details into how landmass effects evolution, preferably the formations of Paleozoic timelines.

Protoargoland's Formation

Geologic data around the world found much to be characterized these boundaries between cratons, to plates, to stratas. When it coms to paleontology, the importance of theories implement how they form during the time they existed. Plenty of studies depicted ancient supercontinents like Pangaea, after countless fossils of biologic composition expressed in sedimentary rocks. One study discovered an unlikely hypothetical continent that is now sunken under the ocean today. Argoland was thought to be a continent, and though it was a landmass, it appeared to be broken up as a giant archipelago. The size of Japan, this archipelagic region is confined within Oceania, between Australia and southeastern tips of Asia. The landmass surrounding it was found to have impressions of mountains and rifts. It even provided "lost" plates as well. The plates that seemed to form Argoland was in fact a parent Gondwana made prior.

Gondwana's Formation 120 mya, with Argoland locating between Australia (bottom right) and Indonesia (mid to upper right) Credit: Wikipedia
Gondwana, or Gondwanaland, was a large continent that forms of today's Americas, Africa, Australia, Arabia, Antarctica, Balkans and India. The ancient continent gave rise to a new continent after that exposed Argoland's remaining landmass. It would seem as if Argoland was not a continent in the first place, but later studies produced that claim to the test. The accretion at the edge of the boundary, characterized by abruptly broken plates, suggested it was formed during event of active volcanic activities. Later however, one institute from Max Planck believed that was not the only, nor primary, involvement in how it was formed.
The study of tectonics proposed to rewrite about Argoland’s prehistory. Using futuristic technology for finding geographic landmasses, radiocarbon dating and advanced knowledge of plate formation, international universities call each other out to scramble around Indonesia and Australia to help support its origin from a different proposal; the "Ghost Plate Problem. It was coined as a way to simply define unknown ancient landmasses that were never hypothesized or never concluded. Southwest from the Mariana Trench, between the convergent plate (made by abrasion of both Pacific Plate and the Philippine Plate), there's a downwards facing plate that moves below the current plate. They pinpointed 3 locations away from any active biomes to excavate with drones to provide GPS. About 30 pieces of plate was sent by automated submarines, and contains radiocarbon dating of 240-280 million years ago. The "Ghost Plate Problem" grew prominent then and there they found 2,346 fragments of bones lying within the boundary.
Not for long, the same team of Canadian scientists later went along with the international project to compare the piece of slab with the holotype they were carrying. Excitingly, they seek bountiful options to study any bones and plates within an uknown boundary. This joint study puts the debate at an end; a once merged landmass that was overlapped between Africa, Asia, Americas and Austroantarctica, broken up as fragments and migrated beyond the mainland where the continent decreased in size, left by intense surge of volcanic activity eventually split into Oceania during Late Permian, and form then as a lateralized area. Estimated size comparison of the continent was likely that between today's Greenland or China, about 7,600,000 km³, which might suspect Gondwana being the parent to Protoargoland. Also, this puts the modern day position of Protoargoland’s formation the most likely birthplace of triapsids during the Triassic period (first being the relative size of the continent was large enough to support large families, spreads within temperate and tropical regions at the time, and discovered to be less violent volcanic activities despite the breakup of Pangaea nearly 250,000,000 years ago).
The scientists were amazed to find fossils buried under the ocean's crust. They performed testing phase around Protoargoland and witnessed that there are many more species of reptiles like it. With the foundational support for evolution, and the reconsideration to the discovery back in Canada, they witnessed an astounding array of ancient organisms, from arthropods, to therapsids, and to even temnospondyls. What's more fascinating is none of the fossils were found to be an archosaur at all, representing Protoargoland's geographic isolation to the outside world, further point the clade's position to be true. The goal next is to use as many intel of the treasure trove discovery surrounding Protoargoland's environment as possible with utmost verification to paleontologists around the globe.

What If The United States Never United?
Map 1: By 1799 Map 2: By 1810
In this timeline, we look at if the 13 colonies never united, even under the Articles of Confederation, and still manage to win the war for independence, presumably after signing an agreement to instead co operate as a single fighting force militarily until the war's end. After the Treaty of Paris, the European Powers and UK recognize the independence of all 13 colonies, and the British grant each land up to the Mississippi river, which is easily partitioned south of the Ohio River(although S. Carolina soon after cedes most of its share to Georgia like otl, mostly out of practicality and also out of goodwill), however the land acquired north of the Ohio causes a degree of uncertainty, but it's ultimately decided that the 13 colonies and their successor states will govern, protect, and settle the Northwest Territory in cooperation with one another until the population of the territory mets a certain population goal and distribution(the exact specifics are to be decided at a later date), and in turn all colonies that have a land claim on the Northwest Territory renounce their claims in favor of a single neutral and fully independent country being formed out of it once it becomes able to sustain itself. Other unsettled land disputes are settled and the 13 colonies make a proclamation that if the British, or any other foreign power, were to encroach on one of the 13 states, or any successor states of them, that all others would be obligated to come to their aid and defend them. This part of the Treaty also extends to a scenario where any one of the 13 were having a conflict with the Native Americans that they couldn't handle themselves, that the other states would come to their aid(the Southern states attempted to add slave revolts to this clause, but was rejected by the North, so later the Southern states made a similar agreement on their own regarding potential slave revolts). The European Powers and the British understood and respected this clause, as it was strictly defensive, so the Treaty would be signed.
Right off the bat the former colonies were already drifting apart, dispite pre existing land claims and disputes being settled, new ones, or old ones in different forms, began to emerge, while on paper all signatories of the Treaty of Paris recognized New York's full ownership of Vermont, there was still some pan-New England sentiment that wanted to see Vermont become independent, and Pennsylvania had ambitions on other parts of upstate New York, as well as some of the smaller atlantic states in hopes of getting more direct access to the ocean, while Virginia wanted to secure Maryland and Delaware in it's sphere, and New York had dreams of dominating the northern colonies, wanting to take most of Northern Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Georgia was beginning to "unknowingly" let American settlers cross the border into Spanish Florida.
By 1799:
The New England States realized their tenuous position, being sandwiched between New York and British Canada, a collection of small now fully independent countries, they realized pretty quickly if they wanted to maintain independence they had to band together, so soon after the Treaty Of Paris, the 4 nations of New England(Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire), met in Boston to form a Confederation. It was realized quickly who would be the dominant member state, Massachusetts, and there were calls for measures to be put in place to make sure all member states had equal representation, while Massachusetts representatives claimed it was unfair to underrepresent them, so a sort of compromise had to be made, and it was found in partitioning Massachusetts into 4 member states, Maine, Plymouth, and West Massachusetts, were split off and the rest just kept the name Massachusetts. This gave former Massachusetts theoretically equal representation while also not allowing one single member state to dominant the union. Afterwards once they finished the details their constitution was signed by all four and The Confederation of New England was born. The government of New England knew it still had to deal with its geopolitical predicament, so decided to appease the British by selling the disputed land in northern Maine, as well as some of the non disputed land in Maine as well to create a more defendable border, and then used much of the money to begin funding independence movements in Vermont to destabilize New York.
The Republic of New York had finalized it's constitution with the idea of making the Republic as centralized as possible, more or less intending the upstate to more of a colony to extract resources from than an equal part of the nation. They effectively wanted to focus on New York City as they wanted it to be the trade capital of the world, or at least the Atlantic. Over the rest of the 1780s, settlers in upstate New York, especially in Vermont, grew increasingly hostile to centralization efforts, especially when "The Post Act" is passed in 1786, stipulating that permanent settlements had to be in established government trade posts, with the intent of making it easier for the government to control the settler population. This caused outrage when soldiers stationed up north began forcibly moving settlers off their homesteads and into the trading posts, no matter how long they had been on their homestead, in 1789 it boiled over into open rebellion within Vermont, which began to occur all across Upstate New York by 1790, being supported covertly by Pennsylvania and New England, the insurgency became too deeply entrenched for the NYC govt' to break, and alongside Native American raids against the NY govt, the Republic began to abandon its interest in Pennsylvania and New England, just wanting to hold on to the Upstate.
The Republic of New Jersey just wanted to stay neutral and independent for the most part, although often found itself in the crossfire in New York and Pennsylvania's cold war. Mostly interested in trade and agriculture.
Pennsylvania had the most territorial acquisition goals, wanting first to reaquire Delaware, then willing to conquer Maryland when Delaware refused to have its crippling debts paid off by Pennsylvania in turn for being annexed into Pennsylvania rather choosing to take a similar offer from Maryland, although Maryland promised autonomy for Delaware which was the deciding factor for them. Pennsylvania's government was outraged and threatened war on Maryland-Delaware, promising to eradicate slavery in the two Southern states. This sent shockwaves in the South, who all, especially Virginia, rallied to the side of Maryland-Delaware against Pennsylvania, who had no allies themselves that were willing to fight alongside them, and knew if war broke out New York may even try to invade them(although the Vermont war wouldn't make them much of a threat), so ultimately Pennsylvania backed down and soon after Maryland-Delaware and Virginia met to form a Confederation of their own, which infuriated Pennsylvanians but there was nothing they could do at that point.
Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, in the wake of the Delaware crisis, knew they had to stick together lest Pennsylvania were to try something again, The Commonwealth Of Virginia's constitution was used as the basis, although many changes were made to accommodate Delaware and Maryland, and to break down Virginia to make more of a balanced federal system, a Senate and House Of Representatives were established, with the states that made up this new country being Delaware, which was given Virginia and Maryland's share of the Delmarva peninsula, Kentucky(more or less otl borders), Westslyvania, made up of the Appalachian portion of the remaining part of Maryland and Virginia, then the remainder of Maryland and the remainder of Virginia as well. This new country, The Commonwealth Of The Chesapeake, later just shortened to Chesapeake Commonwealth or just "Chesapeake", although erroneously referred to as just "Virginia" by many outside of the country, would be the most similar to OTL's United States politically.
North Carolina mostly kept to itself, although Appalachian and post-Appalachian separatism became a hotter and hotter issue, and not wanting to have a situation like New York, North Carolina decided to grant the area of OTL's Tennessee autonomy within The Republic of North Carolina akin to the modern devolution style of autonomy of Scotland within the United Kingdom.
South Carolina also mostly kept to itself, although being fiercely independent from any notion of joining with North Carolina or Georgia, mostly focusing on the slave trade.
Georgia would find itself the most international infamy for its unresolved land disputes with Spanish Florida, allowing waves of American, although mostly Georgian and South Carolinan in origin, settlers to settle throughout West Florida, disputed area or not, as well as northern East Florida, although attempts are made to push further south the Peninsula they typically don't end well. Spain tries to repell the Settlers once they realize the scale of them but most of them are armed so usually nothing happens as the Spanish Garrisons don't usually care enough to get into a shootout, and there's nothing the Spanish government is willing to do without risking a war with all the American nations.
The Northwest Territory is surveyed extensively to deem how many settlers they can realistically expect in a portion of territory, and the territory is divided into multiple districts that are intended to each meet a standard population requirement that once they all theoretically did the Territory would be made an independent country. The Governors of the territory are all representing the former colonies so they are typically not given any say in affairs outside the Territory. A section of disputed territory and some non disputed territory in OTL's northern Minnesota is deemed to not be worth controlling and is suggested that selling the land back to the British would give the rest of the Territory a more defendable border and some extra revenue, so the purchase goes through, and while some suggest more far northern territory be sold such proposals are quickly shut down. The issue of Slavery comes up in the Territory but it is decided to hold it to a vote among the citizens once the Territory can be made a sovereign country.
By 1810:
The Republic of New York had mostly fallen out of control of Upstate New York by the turn of the century, and in 1802 a peace treaty, mediated by Thomas Jefferson, established the borders of the newly independent Republic of Vermont-Hudsonia, and a demarcation zone north of the border where no permanent settlements coming from the remainder of New York could be established, any New York settlers would have to build somewhere north of the line, as to prevent New York City from developing an orbit of influence across the border in the future. Initially New England hoped to annex Vermont into the confederation as another member state but it was ultimately refused in favor of keeping Vermont and the rest of former Upstate New York(known now as "Hudsonia"), neutral between Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. The remaining Republic of New York became inward focused.
With the Napoleonic wars in Europe, the continent was left destabilized, and the Spanish Empire collapsed, allowing for Georgia to seize the entirety of Florida, although making the Peninsula a territory opposed to immediately adding it to the Republic.
The Louisiana Territory had effectly been abandoned by Napoleon, who couldn't find any buyer who could realistically defend the territory from the British, so locals in New Orleans declared themselves the Republic of Mississippi, although soon after The Republic of Georgia invaded and took the southern portion of the territory, the stuff they could realistically defend and control and that they were in any way interested in, while most of the residents in the newly annexed territory accepted their new reality, some more passionate souls moved up north and declared a Republic of Mississippi in exile, although the British were now drawing a line of the territory that they realistically had any interest in settling and controlling now that the mouth of the river was under Georgian control, and pretty much any legitimacy the exiled Republic had was squashed by local native American raids, settlers from other American states, Native American exiled from the other side of the river, escaping slaves, European immigrants who wanted to establish new settlements for their respective groups outside the mostly WASP controlled former British colonies, namely the Polish and Jewish. Bandits and outlaws also crossed the river into the remaining part of the former Louisiana Territory, now called the "Missouri Country", or due to its lawless and hardshipful nature, it was often called the "Misery Country". None of the former British Colonies, the British themselves, Mexicans, nor the Northwest Territory had any intention of conquering and pacifying the land, preferring to just let it sort itself out.
Eventually the Northwest Territory reaches it's population requirements around the 1820s-1840s and is granted full independence as the Republic of (something other than Northwest Territory).
What do you think would happen next? Feel free to make your own maps and posts about this scenario, or what you think would happen in a timeline where the United States never united? If you have any questions I'll try and answer them!

2024.01.10 13:41 Foxwarrior3 Godzilla: the Monster King timeline. Part 1 (Q&A included)

Note: this timeline will combine Godzilla and various non-Godzilla things into one universe. Q&A includes elaboration on lore and behind-the-scenes trivia.

445 million years ago: The Late Ordovician mass extinction happens due to a gamma-ray burst, eliminating 49–60% of marine genera and nearly 85% of marine species. The radiation causes mutations, some creatures mutate to absorb radiation and thrive in the increased radiation.
320-65 millions years ago: The prehistoric "Age of Kaiju", which begins around the Carboniferous period sees certain lifeforms begin to grow gigantic sizes. In the Carboniferous, Kumonga, Kamacuras, Megaguirus & their Meganulon swarms become the first Kaiju to roam the earth. Baragon also appears in the Permian. The Permian extinction causes their decline, and around 200 million years ago, Rodans appear and become the dominant aerial predators. Varanopodes, as well as Gorosauruses, Gojirans and Anguiruses evolve. Titanosauruses, Mandas and Ebirahs appear just before the extinction of the dinosaurs.
65 million years ago: Cretaceous Ghidorah attempts to scorch the Earth clean of life, as he has done to other planets in the past. Before it can finish off the rest of the planet's life, the planet's mana produces two protectors in the form of Mothra and Battra. The two insectoid demi-gods are defeated in their larval stage but after growing into their imago forms they manage to drive the young Ghidorah off-world. Most Kaiju retreat undeground to the Hollow Earth or the ocean's depths.
12,000 years ago: The Elias, a race of physically diminutive humans that possess powerful mental abilities and advanced technology rule most of the planet along with regular humans, while also worshiping Kaiju. They use their knowledge to further advance their civilization but when they try to alter Earth’s climate and environment to better suit them, as well as controlling and creating Kaiju, they incur the wrath of Battra. Mothra attempts to stop her twin and the battle between them destroys the Elias. The only survivors, Moll and Lora, are taken in by Mothra. She brings them to her home on Infant Island where they become her priestesses, the Shobijin. A select few humans join them and form a peaceful village isolated from the rest of the world. Mothra provides them with a special water that greatly prolongs life.
Though unknowingly, other remnants of this advanced civilization would escape to the Hollow Earth. The known Kaiju creations of the Elias include Leviathan, Dagahra, Raiga, Pulgasari and Yongarry.
Aprox. 100 BC: The Leviathan, a massive sea snake created by the Elias, is awakened and goes on a rampage across the world's oceans. Dagon, a member of the Gojiran species, fends the monster off multiple times, but eventually gets mortally wounded in a battle at Crete, despite having the help of the mammalian kaiju Behemoth and Mothra. The king of the Mermaids, Orion, and his Kraken queen lover, who's name was lost to history, manage to find a way to seal the monster away with the use of the Trident of Oceanus, which was made from the monster's scales. They petrify the Leviathan with a ritual, but at the cost of their lives.
1030 AD: The alien monster Megalon crash lands in medieval Japan and attacks Okinawa. One of the Emperor’s royal guards, whose name has since been lost to time, performs a secret ritual that transfers his soul into a giant stone statue that comes to life as King Caesar. The knowledge of this ritual and how it was acquired have also been lost. Caesar defeats Megalon, who retreats to hibernate underground. King Caesar places himself into a deep slumber as well, waiting to be awakened by the sacred prayer that calls him to aid Japan again.
Approx. 1500 AD: The legend of Gojira begins on Odo Island. The natives form a tradition of sending out virgin sacrifices to appease the wrathful sea serpent, though this practice is abandoned by the 20th Century.
1953: The lesser known Rhedosaurus makes it's attack on New York city after being awakened by nuclear testing in the Arctic, and ultimately gets killed. Although historians generally agree that the ‘Age of Monsters’ began in 1954 with Godzilla, the Rhedosaurus is still recognized as the first recorded kaiju to appear outside of myth and legend. Following its death, the kaiju's body is taken to the American Museum of Natural History for study. Public access to the remains is strictly forbidden.
1954: An investigation by the Japanese into a series of shipping disasters across the South Pacific discovers the existence of a gigantic dinosaur-type creature known among the natives of Odo Island as Gojira, which is Americanised into ‘Godzilla'. The monster is lured to the Bikini Atoll by the US and Japanese armies where an atomic bomb is detonated under the guise of a test in an attempt to kill it quickly and quietly. The creature not only survives but becomes larger and more powerful. Godzilla backtracks the military to Tokyo and destroys most of the city in retaliation, turning the capital into a sea of fire. The JSDF’s weapons prove totally ineffective against him and only an attack by US and Japanese fighter planes manages to annoy him into retreating. Another attempt is made to kill the creature, this time using Dr. Daisuke Serizawa's experimental Oxygen Destroyer compound. Serizawa destroys all his research and sacrifices himself to activate the weapon so that it can never fall into the wrong hands. Godzilla is believed to have been killed. The Age of Monsters begins.
1955: Anguirus awakens from hibernation in the wilderness of Japan. A second Godzilla, sensing the other kaiju, emerges from the depths of the Pacific to investigate. The two meet in Osaka and fight one another in the first recorded kaiju-on-kaiju battle. Anguirus is forced into retreat while Godzilla is later frozen in an avalanche of ice in Kamiko Island.
1956: A mining village in northern Kyushu accidentally awakens a Meganulon hive. The giant insects kill and devour many of the miners. They then pupate into Meganula and absorb the radiation of underground uranium deposits to feed to their queen, who mutates into Megaguirus. Megaguirus emerges and destroys a good portion of the village. However, the commotion awakens Rodan, the last of a species of giant pterosaur that was the natural predator of the Meganula. Rodan destroys the hive and engages Megaguirus in an aerial dogfight which leads them to Fukuoka. The city is almost completely leveled by the two kaiju before the JSDF drives them off. Megaguirus retreats to an unknown hideout while Rodan head into the Japanese Alps, where the JSDF chooses to leave the solitary kaiju undisturbed.
1958: The kaiju Varan awakens in the outback of Australia. The creature goes on a rampage all the way to Sydney. Varan is eventually defeated using a new chemical weapon that forces the reptile to retreat into the sea.
1960: Infant Island and the Shobijin are discovered by a team investigating the effects of nearby nuclear tests on the surrounding islands. The tiny twin priestesses are kidnapped by businessman Clark Nelson and taken back to Japan to be capitalized on as a sideshow attraction. The Shobijin pray to Mothra for help and the kaiju hatches from her egg, attacking Tokyo in her larval form to rescue the girls. The JSDF injures Mothra, who cocoons herself on Tokyo Tower. The public demands the release of the Shobijin but Nelson tries to take the girls back to America with him. Fortunately, they are rescued by Professor Shinichi Chujo and Nelson is killed in a shootout with police. The JSDF tries to kill the pupating Mothra with their new Atomic Heat Ray Cannon but it only accelerates her maturation. Mothra emerges in her imago form and heads for Haneda Airport, lured with a symbol painted by Chujo on the runway tarmac. The girls and Mothra are reunited and return to Infant Island.
1961: London is attacked by the Gorgon creature Orka, who's seeking to find their kidnapped offspring Gorgo. The creatures then go back to the sea after reuniting.
1962: The walrus-kaiju Maguma is discovered in Antarctica.
1963: An island expedition leads to the discovery of the Matango creature. A long-dead body of an Anguirus, with Matango growing on it is also discovered. The island is then quarantined to prevent the spread of the Matango with any infected being cremated on site.
1964: The giant space jellyfish-monster Dogora attacks France, but is eventually killed when chemical plants mass-produced chemicals containing active ingredients from wasp venom and sprayed them into the air, along with assistance from Mothra.
1965: The burrowing kaiju Baragon awakens in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. The creature attacks several villages, devouring everything from animals to people. The GDF engages the kaiju before he can make it to Moscow. They use a new experimental weapon known as the Maser Cannon to drive it back underground. Following this successful test, Maser weapon technology is put into mass production.
1967: The monsters Gorosaurus, Kamacuras, and Kumonga are awakened by the conflict of the Vietnam War. Kamacuras and Kumonga attack and consume soldiers on both sides along with local villagers. Gorosaurus attempts to stop them, though this is deemed to be a territorial dispute rather than any attempt to protect the humans. Gorosaurus cannot fight both foes at once, but Anguirus eventually arrives on the scene and, to the surprise of onlookers, the two join forces to defeat the arthropods. Gorosaurus disappears into the wilds of Malaysia afterward, while Anguirus goes to the Himalayas.
1970: The Helios 7, an unmanned space probe, is launched on a mission to Mars, but an unexpected malfunction causes it to head wildly off-course and crash in the Pacific Ocean near Selgio Island. The disturbance awakens a giant cephalopod kaiju, known in local legend as Gezora. The monster’s subsequent rampage gains the attention of two more kaiju, Ganimes, and Kamoebas. They eventually meet and a three-way brawl ensues. It ends when a GDF team and the NASA team, sent there to retrieve the probe, and the natives, managed to use the weapons they had on hand to cause a small volcanic eruption on the island's north. The lava flow badly seared Gezora and drove the other two Kaiju back until their combined weight caused the unstable cliff edge to collapse, plunging all three of them into the sea. None of them resurfaced and they were presumed dead.
1971: King Ghidorah arives on Earth and begins causing havoc all across Japan. This gains the attention of Mothra and causes Anguirus and Rodan to awaken, while Godzilla escapes his icy tomb. Godzilla and Rodan meet and begin to duel. Mothra, with help from Anguirus, convinces them to join her in the battle against their true enemy and all four Earth kaiju attack King Ghidorah. Mothra is killed in the battle, however, her twin, newly-hatched larva join in and help drive Ghidorah off-world.
1973: Godzilla attacks Tokai, Japan to feed on the reactor of the nuclear power plant. Shortly after, Godzilla is attacked by the recently awakened sea monster Ebirah. The battle attracts the attention of Megaguirus, who tries to feed on the energy of both kaiju. After a long, lengthy struggle, Godzilla forces both of his opponents to retreat.
1974: Godzilla goes on a rampage throughout Japan, only to be intercepted by another Godzilla. It is then discovered that the first Godzilla is actually a robot in disguise named MechaGodzilla. MechaGodzilla’s advanced weaponry overwhelms Godzilla, but the robot’s main controls are damaged by a blast from Godzilla’s Atomic Breath, forcing both to retreat. The GDF discover that MechaGodzilla is actually the creation of an extraterrestrial invasion force called the Cryog, a race of shape-shifters whose home planet had been destroyed by King Ghidorah, leaving their civilization wandering the empty tracks of space in search of a habitable world. MechaGodzilla is eventually defeated by the combined efforts of Godzilla and King Caesar while a GDF battalion destroys most of the Cryog’s small strike force. MechaGodzilla's remains are recovered by the GDF for study and the attack is covered up as a terrorist plot to prevent widespread panic. The remaining Cryog escape into space but vow to return.
1975: The aquatic monster Titanosaurus is discovered off the southern coast of Taiwan. However, the monster appears friendly towards humans, only attacking a naval submarine in an act of self-defense. After much debate, the kaiju is allowed to remain in its natural habitat but is kept under constant surveillance by the GDF.
1980: Growing environmental destruction causes Battra to awaken and go on a rampage across Japan. Mothra arrives to calm her brother down, but Godzilla also appears after sensing Battra in "his" territory. Godzilla and Battra fight while Mothra attempts to pacify them both. With assistance from the GDF, Mothra is eventually able to break up the fight. Battra heads for the Bering Sea while Godzilla returns to the Pacific and Mothra to Infant Island.
1985: Pulgasari appears in North Korea. It attacks Pyongyang, before it's defeated by another monster called Yongarry. The destruction caused by them, causes North Korea to collapse. South Korea uses this opportunity to unify the two nations. Yongarry would dissapear after tunneling underground.
1986: The massive release of radiation from the Chernobyl disaster triggers the first recorded mass awakening of the Kaiju, who all immediately begin migrating towards the north Ukrainian SSR. This includes Methuselah and Amhuluk from Munich, Germany and the Manpupuner Rock Formations, Russia. The GDF find themselves overwhelmed trying to evacuate those caught in the Kaijus' path while also trying to steer them away from population centers. Trying to find out what could be driving all the Kaiju into such a frenzy, the GDF quickly deduces that there has been a severe nuclear accident at Chernobyl, despite the Soviet's attempts to cover up the true extent of the damage.
Although Soviet authorities try to keep the local population calm and under control, a panic ensues once the Kaiju start arriving. Rodan is first and attempts to gorge himself on the burning nuclear fuel, but his efforts are hampered by Mothra, who fears her fellow Kaiju may make things worse in their attempts to feed. The two flying beasts get into a fight and are soon joined by Baragon and Anguirus. Varan, Kamacuras and the Gorgons also arrive, each Kaiju squabbling with the others for their share of the radiation pouring out of the reactor. Tunneling under the site, Anguirus and Baragon drink up all the contaminated water in the tanks beneath the exploded reactor, unintentionally preventing an even worse explosion. The GDF and the Soviet military form a massive ring of soldiers and vehicles around the site, but against so many Kaiju there is little they can do. With no way to get to the plant itself, no work can be done to contain the spread of radiation and it is feared that the situation will only worsen. However, Godzilla finally arrives and asserts his status as the Alpha, forcing the other Kaiju to wait their turn while he has his fill of the radiation, although Amhuluk briefly resists. A melted lump of fuel which should have remained radioactive for centuries is drained dry in a matter of weeks as each Kaiju takes their turn basking in the ruins of the plant. Mothra flies over the surrounding area absorbing the fallout and cleansing the plant and animal life. Methuselah goes back to hibernation, while Amhuluk wanders Siberia.
1987: A second dead Kamoebas washes up in Guam. DNA analysis confirms it to be a different subspecies. It appeared to have died from its wounds after a battle: there were lacerations on the right forelimb and face, and its shell was penetrated and was melting. Godzilla was initially suspected to be the cause, but the lacerations looked like they belonged to a giant cephalopod-like creature, that was neither Gezora or the Giant Octopus, since it must have had a powerful beam weapon to melt the shell.
1989: Godzilla arrives near Mt. St. Helens, seemingly attracted by the bio-acoustic signal in the area. This causes Biollante to appear out of fear and fight Godzilla. Both survive, Biollante turns into spores and settles on an uninhabitated island in the Pacific, as Godzilla retreats to the ocean.
1990: After many years of setbacks and roadblocks, the GDF make a series of scientific breakthroughs with the help of Dr. Emmy Kano that allow them to begin reverse-engineering the alien technology in MechaGodzilla's remains. Armed with this new knowledge, the GDF are able to finish the construction of their first large-scale mecha unit, MOGUERA, which is followed the same year by their own MechaGodzilla (nicknamed MG UN). The two mechas soundly prove their worth in their first deployment, with MOGUERA defeating Manda in London and MechaGodzilla driving Baragon out of Paris.
1991: The GDF’s work on designs for various types of flying battleship meant to combine aerial agility with durability and firepower culminate in the Super X and the Garuda. The Super X is critically damaged in a battle above New Zealand against Varan but manages to drive the giant gliding lizard away. Garuda successfully protects the Peruvian capital of Lima from Kamacuras, but the fight lays bare the ship’s limitations. A young technician named Kazuma Aoki suggests a modification for the Garuda that will allow it to combine with MechaGodzilla to increase the machine’s maneuverability and firepower. This combination, dubbed Super MechaGodzilla, manages to go toe-to-toe with Godzilla himself in a famous battle outside Kyoto. Due to the unexpected intervention of Rodan, the fight ends in a stalemate.
1992: The Super X 2 is completed but takes critical damage in a fight with Godzilla off the Japanese coast, though its reflective Fire Mirror and Cadmium Missiles cause enough injury to Godzilla that he retreats rather than face Super MechaGodzilla. The GDF starts work on the Super X 3, which will be equipped with experimental freezing weapons meant to immobilize kaiju. It also draws up plans for a new class of flying battleship meant to operate in all possible environments, including aerial, aquatic and subterranean: the Gotengo.
1994: A colony of Precambrian crustaceans who were mutated by the original Oxygen Destroyer over the course of 40 years create Destoroyah. It attacks Tokyo, but is confronted by Mothra and MG UN, who hold it off. Godzilla then arrives and helps defeat the monstrous kaiju, supposedly killing it. Godzilla returns to the seas, in order to recover from the effects of Destoroyah's Micro-Oxygen's Beam.
1996: A deep-sea survey team stumbles upon the sleeping Godzilla. Rather than disturb or attack him, the GDF uses the opportunity to make a full X-ray analysis of Godzilla’s skeletal structure. The data collected is put to use in the construction of another, more advanced MechaGodzilla that will imitate the organic movements of the real Godzilla for a more flexible fighting form. To distinguish it from MG UN, the new mecha is nicknamed ‘Kiryu’. Dr. Naoko Akagi helps to design Kiryu’s most crucial piece of software: a DNA-based computer that will handle sub-conscious motor control functions for the pilot.
1997: Professional American MMA fighter Douglas Gordon puts aside the celebrity life to sign up with the GDF.
1998: A new kaiju appears in New York City. At first, thought to be Godzilla due to its close resemblance and ambient radioactivity, the creature is quickly found to be an entirely different creature. Given the name Zilla as a homage, the creature is discovered to be capable of asexual reproduction and that it is using the city as a nesting site. Both the adult and his offspring are killed by the GDF's American Branch. However one egg survives, and a new Zilla hatches. The GDF captures the newborn and discovers that it is fortunately infertile. It's raised by Monarch scientist Nick Tatopoulos and his team, naming it Zilla Junior.
1999: A temple is discovered in the Philippines by a GDF-funded archeological team. A mysterious mural is found inside depicting every known kaiju on Earth, as well as unknown ones. The painting is estimated to be thousands, possibly tens of thousands of years old, but its origins are a complete mystery. Scientists are stumped as to how so many kaiju who were not known to exist until modern times could be depicted in a single artwork. The mural is excavated and taken back to the GDF's main branch in Japan for further analysis and study.
2000-2010's: Technology reaches the pinnacle of advancement, and humanity is now years ahead of where they would have been if not for the Cryog invasion.

2023.10.01 23:46 BruhCulture TranslatedVerse overview (write down what an average inhabitant in your world thinks of my world)

You can skip this section if you don't like or care about physics
For the primary structures, the universe has huge flat sheets that stack on top of each other and the closer they get to the edge the less flat and the more spikey they become until they become long tendrils that protrude at the edge of the universe to give it its unique shape. This structure is more adapted to the changing physics that the universe has and is based on. This also makes the universe harder to corrupt and better at corrupting others. The sheets serve as a defense because corruption is slowed by flat layers. The tendrils serve as offence allowing the universe to corrupt better with its will at a distance.
My world has very small galaxy-like (as in irregular galaxies, NO SPIRALS or ELLIPTICALS) secondary structures and the reason why they are so small is because of the differing physics in the different parts of the world. Each secondary structure can almost be described as its own little universe. These differing physics are born from paradoxes which are random changes that happen a billion times per second in this universe, they might fix or break physics but most would change physics. The universe can also slow down or speed up the rate of paradoxes on its own. To speed up the rate of paradoxes yourself you can add foreign objects.
Then there are the tertiary structures, they vary from our star systems, and black hole systems to totally weird and alien ones that we wouldn't be able to comprehend and some may have different geometries than what is Euclidean.
The universe is old it is about 10^85 years old. It is also very much filled with life forms.
Life is extremely common in this universe. So common in fact that the atoms and molecules are actually living creatures. This means that there is something going on below the atomic scale that is making all of this life. The physics below the atomic scale also gets really weird and it can be only described as a Lovecraftian take on Conway's game of life. Physicists don't really know what is going on down at that scale all they know is that it is pure chaos with special interactions that come and go.
The outcomes are indeterminate and due to the law of large numbers, the universe is hard to change in the long run.
Chemistry can range from normal chemistry like the one we are familiar with to absolutely strange and alien chemistries with different forces or cooperation of forces. They are still living beings and elements like being around their own kind so they form elementals which vary in size from 1 micrometer to 1000 kilometers averaging at around (5 to 20 centimeters). Elementals larger than 20 meters can collapse under their own gravity to become spheres.
Hydrogen elementals are the most common and they behave mischievously but with good intentions. The alkali metal elementals are easily provoked except for Lithium. The lower down you go in the periodic table the more easily provoked they become. The alkaline earth metals are also easily provoked but they are more nice to the people on average. The boron group elementals are the most varied ranging from the usually passive boron to more easily provoked and aggressive lower elements. The carbon group elementals would be rather friendly and cooperative. The pnictogens are mischievous and the Chalcogens are very chaotic. The halogens are aggressive and the noble gases are passive.
Obviously, there is still DNA, proteins, and amino acids and they are definitely living things. Despite some chemicals living harmoniously others are super aggressive and will want to blow others up. There are many different types of bonds, some are glue bonds others are electron bonds. Glue bonds are stronger but more limited, electron bonds are weaker and more flexible. Most of the aggressive chemicals are that way due to natural selection at the chemical level.
To be fair Chemistry is just drunk physics so you may skip that.
Then there is the biology.
Evolution is random but it responds to a large part of the world's environment. It responds to both locally and globally and it responds back in the form of waves. The earth is always changing and as the earth changes, there would be a preferred path, known as the major path.
The direction of evolution is often unpredictable and can change quickly.
When evolution changes its direction it also creates a shadow evolutionary path that is non-dominant and only takes place locally.
My species have their own version of DNA that can cooperate with their wills and they have individual wills but those are very weak ones. They are in conflict and cooperation with the person's will and their components are also sentient. This is a part of the beauty and horror of the world. DNA is stored in the cells but also the source of it is in the Acid. The Acid is the soul of the person that contains their base DNA. The Acid is hyperbolic. The engine is what determines how fast the will is created. DNA has knowledge in it that allows it to cooperate and conflict with the body. That knowledge is changing randomly based on the environment and it is responding back in waves. Since the knowledge in your DNA is always changing this process is natural and since it seems so baked in the physics of the universe then nothing can stop it.
The Environment
The environment is defined as a combination of global structures and local structures on earth. Each local structure is a geological and climatological variant of the global structure. Some may have floating islands and glowing forests, and still others may have lava oceans and acidic rain. Each local environment will still affect each other so expect to see some weird weather patterns. The earth has an average temperature of 2172 degrees Fahrenheit (1188 degrees Celsius). The land is filled with lava and strange twisted trees as well as giant root-like fungi that conquer the land. There are earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and fires happening many times per year. The ground is quite vulnerable to earthquakes and even though volcanoes are relatively rare, if they erupt then it would spread ash across the earth. Hurricanes are intense and are common, fires are extremely common and are aggressive towards all living things even to each other. There is liquid water on earth but it is all underground. Most of it is just water vapor and ice. The earth’s climate changes very erratically and every 50 - 200 million years the earth’s crust becomes unstable, new volcanoes are born, and the resources that would be there are gone and replaced by a basalt flood. Nations sink and new mountains are formed. Ash would cool the planet down and strange thunderstorms would happen. Every creature would experience a huge amount of dread and they would begin to go mad and blame everyone else for the apocalypse causing a mega war.
The moon of the earth is weird and there are pillars that grow up from the moon as well as weird shifting cliffs. The earth’s moon seems to be very geologically active. The moon is pretty cold at around -14 degrees Fahrenheit. There are ice storms happening on the moon. There are also crystalline root-like structures that act as the plants of the moon. There are these small bud-like bushes that are around 5ft tall but nothing more than that. Since the moon is smaller than the earth it would have fewer biomes than the earth. Planets larger than the Earth would likely have more biomes than the Earth. Jupiter’s biomes range from deep and cold to absolutely chaotic and everything in between.
Mars is another planet that also has civilizations as does Venus, the moons of the gas giants, and the gas giants themselves. There are even some groups of people living in Eris and Pluto. Each of these planets has weird and unique activities associated with them. Some are quite typical but others are completely strange and alien. The reason why Mercury isn’t inhabited is because it is too close to the sun so all life there would be corrupted by the sun. Being corrupted by the sun would kill that life by making it split up into its constituents.
On Earth, there are many different species. Different periods of living beings are categorized into ‘floors’. These creatures were similar because they all shared a lot of traits that were essential to identify the ‘floor’ of a species. Earth has many different humanoids, which are all named after geological periods. The Cambrians are the oldest that are still around on earth. They also live the longest, ranging from 80 to 1400 years without life extension, they can also live for 2000 years if they use their best life extension techniques. They are around 3m tall and have a population of 1,530,000 on Earth, 428,000,000 on Mars, 350,000,000 on Venus, 5,500,000 of them in the asteroid belt, 12,500,000,000 on Jupiter, 4,100,000,000 of them on the other gas giants, 750,000,000 of them in the Kuiper Belt, and 10,000,000,000* of them live in other star systems or in interstellar space. Cambrians are also semi-aquatic. Cambrians can connect with one another to the level of complete fusion. Their society is not unlike a hive at the smallest level. Their economic system can be described as communism but that would be a stretch.
The Ordovicians are what could actually be described as communists. They are also known to fight particularly dirty during war. They are around 3.5m tall. They live for 200 to 1000 years without life extension. They have a population of around 100,000 on Earth, there are 780,000,000 on Mars, and there are 1,100,000,000 on Venus. 1,200,000 of them in the asteroid belt. 5,000,000,000 of them on the gas giants. 500,000,000 of them live in The Kuiper belt. 20,000,000,000* of them live in other star systems or in interstellar space. They don't have gulags but they do have cult-like groups that are basically dogs of their government. They are not theocratic, they are just like cults. Their cults are quite intellectual in nature rather than being a madness fest. They have the ability to take the talent of others.
The Silurians have some pretty crazy cults. The Silurians believed in weird things that they wanted to be true because of their manifest destiny. One of those things is an immortal ruler. Another thing is for them to actually find God. Silurians are around 2.3m tall. The Silurians live from 100 to 800 years without life extension even though on their record they have rulers living for hundreds of thousands of years. The Silurians have a population of 2,730,000,000 on Earth, 430,000,000 on Venus, 100,000 on Mars, and 25,000,000 on Uranus. They have 8,000,000,000 in other star systems or in interstellar space. The Silurians keep their knowledge secret. Even their royal families do that. Silurians are hard workers even though they don't want to work so hard to manifest their destinies. Their society is filled with cutthroat politics and secret plans. One such of these plans created heaven and hell.
The Carboniferous or the Mississippians/Pennsylvanians or the Republicans. They are the tallest race, at around 5m tall. They were also the longest-lived race living anywhere from 1000 to 7000 years without life extension. The Stannyzones (trillionnares) live for over 10000 years. They have a population of 340,000,000 on earth. 780,000,000 on the moon and about 50,000,000,000 of them in other star systems or in interstellar space. Their society is quite ethereal but also mechanical. They used their robots and professional workers who were able to make the highest quality stuff. Unfortunately, their society is very elitist and they won't give jobs to anyone who they believe isn't as good as they are. They often undermine those who aren't as intelligent or as long-lived as they are. They have the power to easily revive the dead.
The Triassic are clever but are struggling. They are stereotyped as rappers but some of them just write poetry to understand themselves and nature. They are around 2.8m tall and they have a population of 1,300,000 on earth. 800,000 on Mars, 3,500,000 on Venus, and 3,000,000 on the Asteroid belt. 4,000,000,000 on the gas giants. 1,000,000,000 on the Kuiper belt (they mostly live on Pluto, Charon and Eris). 18,000,000,000 live in other star systems or in interstellar space. They live from 250 to 1200 years old. They want the greatest rap song of all time back. They have a confederacy rather than a federal system.
The Jurassic is not very smart nor long-lived. They don’t really have a society because they most likely just steal other people’s technology. Some of them flash gang signs but others just stay underground and build hollows under people’s buildings. The latter Jurassic also makes paintings from blood. They have a population of 128,000,000 on earth. They haven't heard of space tech and they have no plans to go to space.
The Cretaceous are closer to having a society than the Jurassic but most of the time they just have temporary communities known as unions. They are more intelligent than the Jurassic. They have a population of 54,000,000 on earth. They did steal some space tech once and they did harrassed a Carboniferous on the moon with it but none of them actually went to space.
The Humans used to have their own kingdom. However, they were captured by the Silurians during the Eocene war. Humans freed themselves 30,000 years ago thus beginning New Human History. Humans have a population of 540,000,000 on earth. They are starting to explore space but they see that they have to share space with the other races making interplanetary colonization difficult.
The philosophical aspects of the world include the laws of naturality which encompass the entire universe and are theorized to be something larger than the universe. The laws of naturality are like a Ray, they have a point in which you completely break that law but not a single endpoint where you become a paragon of that law. Take for example the artistic laws, breaking them results in a crime called ‘Frottery’. Frottery doesn’t merely mean that you made something bad, it means that you made something with zero artistic value; an abomination (the closest thing to Frottery I can think of in the real world is the original Sonichu comics by Chris Chan). Breaking the scientific laws results in a crime called ‘Animism’. Animism means that you theorize something so stupid and wrong that even flat-earthers would see what you did wrong. Breaking political and economic laws would get you ‘Gomorrah’ and ‘Sodomy’ respectively. Gomorrah is when North Korea and South Korea combine in the worst way imaginable and Sodomy is when the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer is taken to its logical conclusion. The universe holds its lifeforms to high standards by subdividing crimes against naturality into three types, complete crimes, major crimes, and petty crimes. Complete Frottery means making something of zero value, Major Frottery means making something of extremely low value, and petty Frottery means making something of very low or low value but you believe it is worth more than that. The universe defines low value as something that is inauthentic and parasitic. For example, the universe does not consider the Silurians’ jungles to be of low value, they consider people who waste food in the name of art petty frotteurs.
Here are some statistics. There are 43 wars started every year on average for all of Earth’s history. Without outliers, it would be 18 wars started per year. Each year has about 126 wars happening on average. The death rates in war average about 300. In situations of kilo wars the average rate of wars starting increases to 65 per year for all kilo wars. For mega wars, the average rate of wars starting is 750 Per year. The average death rates in war do not change while they happen in kilo wars and mega wars. The bloodiest war was the Seco War and it killed over 3,000 people and over 5,000 living things. The war happened at ground zero of the basalt floods in the 3rd mega war. The crime rates are variable because it can be hard to constitute what is and what isn’t a crime. The average crime rate on earth in all of its history is 10,388 per 100,000 persons though take this rating with a grain of salt because of the high variance and also because there was no peace in Hadean or Archean times. There is a legal difference between people and persons. People are those who belong to a room that expresses the perfect traits to build civilizations and can be in any shape and form. Persons are just those who have a high enough intellectual understanding to learn, grow, and innovate. In the Phanerozoic era, the average crime rate on earth was 1438 per 100,000 persons though that is too to be taken with a grain of salt. The average life expectancy of all time on earth is 874 years. The literacy rate of all time is 99% (because 1% of the population has a mutation that gives them no potential to read). The extreme poverty rate for all time on earth is 10.38%.
The reason for the low death rates is that everyone has the ability to regenerate and shapeshift into a different form allowing them to survive most wars. People can still die in wars if can’t adapt in time or crazy numbers of people show up with a lot of weapons. Some people died because they couldn’t shoot moving targets because they were trying to figure out how to use their skin to see. They used their skin to see because some crazy guy kept shooting them in the eye and if he heals back his eye the crazy guy just shoots it again.
Things that are legal in real life that are illegal in Translated verse earth: environment destruction, killing animals for no reason, making things with no artistic value, pseudoscience
Things that are legal in Translated verse Earth that are illegal in real life: war crimes, picking fights, property damage, leaking out dangerous chemicals (unless they are radioactive)
The technology level is also something to consider. While the local species are an interstellar union, some of the more backwater planets do not have as many people as the important ones. While the average tech level of the local species is inter-stellar this does not mean that all of them will have that tech level. Some planets will be at a Renaissance level of technology (which is my world's equivalent of the Stone Ages). They also have FTL but it uses time travel as its basis. They often crash land on other planets due to the chaotic nature of magic.
The average person in my world is way smarter than the average person on earth and all geniuses on earth because they are able to understand all different types of laws of physics and they are able to control magic which is inherently cancerous and chaotic. Once they can control their magic they become immortal until they die from whatever. Conventional Bullets can't do shit against the average person in my world. Unless you are able to fire a big nuclear bomb at them it would do nothing and even then it would only affect the vulnerable which is most people (because of the radiation, not the force).
Also, they are used to eating food that fights back, so they are tough but they are intellectually passionate and advanced so that's a plus.

2023.09.27 22:06 Single-Bottle4522 Thomas The American Engine Update:

Thomas The American Engine Update:
Alright so I have decided to update / redesign some of the engines designs for this AU that I see fitting better for the characters:
• Gordon is now a New York Central ‘Pacific’ since I want to keep the whole Spencer ‘rivalry’ dynamic equally afloat since Spencer is also a New York Central locomotive in this AU timeline.
• For Henry’s pre-rebuilt, I can possibly see him as a hybrid design between the USRA ‘Light Pacific’ and a New York Central ‘Atlantic’ or ‘Pacific’.
Then for his post rebuild could likely be a Pennsylvanian Railroad Class K4 or a Pennsylvanian Class G5
• Diesel 10 is now a Baldwin DR-6 since its front-end design reminds me of the Class 42 Warships and the GFR ‘V200’ engines anyways.
• I’d say my biggest mistake of all was not having Spamcan, in this universe, apart of the CSX railroad considering his livery of course.
That was an absolute missed opportunity that I should’ve had made beforehand.
• Bear is now a Union Pacific U50 since it reminds me of his slope-cab design which is what I’d say is perfect for what I am looking for as the perfect American Bear in this AU.

Amphibia is Earth from a different timeline where the Carboniferous Period (also called The Age of Amphibians) never ended and continued to evolve until the present day
Hence the reason why Amphibia’s bugs and mushrooms are massive

2023.07.30 16:25 Erik1801 I have come, to enquire about the evolution of flight

I have come, to enquire about the evolution of flight
I am confused, a bit at least.
My current project takes place on the exoplanet Hela. I am trying to stick with "proven" or at least plausible evolutionary timelines. I want to avoid having creatures which are way to evolved for the time period.
The ecology of Hela is modeled after the late Carboniferous and early Permian. So roughly 300-350 million years after life emerged. While doing research, I then encountered a slight issue. From what i can tell, duo to various factors, we really do not have a good picture of what airborne creatures during this time looked like. All we really seem to know is they existed and there were like big flies. But god forbid any details are dropped. This is naturally a problem. For me, because i cant take heavy inspiration from long extinct animals nobody knows and call it original. Tell us Mr. Erik, where did you get this design for the Northern Ashel from ?
a True mystery we may never find the answer to.
As always, whenever i have a good idea people tell me its illegal. Happens to me in all situations, its really annoying. Who could have thought there are truly, so many laws ? But its ok, because if you never look back and never stop running they will never catch you.
Anyways. In an afford to fill the air, literally, I have converged on four types of Airborne creature types. And i would like to know if these seem plausible for the given timeframe, and if i have just missed something in my research. I would also take some enquire about if yall also think designing flying creatures is suspiciously difficult. Maybe god just did not intend for the airways to be populated. . .
Insects Here called "Hexapods". Insects of all shapes and sizes would be the predominant avian lifeforms. Anything from fly sized stuff to the giant Wasp like thing that impales you and drives the plot forwards. At least from what I have read, Insects or really anything that kind of looks like them evolves pretty quickly duo to their fast reproduction and enormous numbers.
Membranous Gliders A much smaller subset of creatures would use glide mechanics to drift around. This appears to be a fairly simple adaptation and happened on Earth fairly soon ish ? These could obviously not be super large and would still rely on a mostly ground base living style.
Amphibious Flyers Essentially flying fish, but some took it way to far. This set could include some larger members and maybe even broadly "bird" like stuff ? Think of the perfectly named Flish from "The Future Is Wild". Because Sealife is so much older there could be enough time for this to develop. Especially if the air is filled with small insects. In my conception, these would be the creatures were creativity can really flow because there are just more options. Though Insects should be interesting as well. Flying spiders, the horror
Big Balloons While it is a bit of a trope to have giant ass flying life forms in your SpecEvo project, i can see the appeal. And at least evolutionarily i think there is a time and a place for large colonies of cells which form balloons and use some sort of active / passive hunting system. For instance, imagine a low flying squid like mf that drops tentacles and yoinks small insects from the ground. At least to me, the time Helas ecology is at seems to be one of the last moments when this approach could be practical. The air has a bunch of small insects, which are small. So there are no big predators just yet which can eat the Hot air balloons. So in this setup this might be a dying type ?
Really, thats all i got. What do yall think ?

2023.07.05 01:42 DuckDuckWaffle99 When will the Pennsylvanian go fully back to train?

Hi, I have been following the Pennsylvanian and have a need to travel from PHL to Pittsburgh. Right now, the train terminates in Harrisburg then it’s another 6 + hours on a bus to Pittsburgh. Is there any kind of timeline or outlook for fully rail-based travel on this route?

2023.05.21 15:49 1fishmob I want to expand my isekai world a bit more with this post, focusing on a lot of details I left out in the original. Do you guys think this sounds like an interesting world build?

I’m going to expand on my world building project more with this post and give more context.
The idea for this story is my take on the isekai genre, mainly because I think it’s one of those overdone genres that’s extremely repetitive and I think it can truly do a lot more than just the common fish out of water scenarios they concoct most often (from what I’ve seen). So with a few months of thinking, I came up with a story that I think is a very unique one and is very original by isekai standard.
The world this takes place in starts on the planet, Thea. The gods who made Thea eventually abandoned their creation, seeing humanity’s first sin as their failure. But, a creator god from a foreign realm took pity on Thea, and brought back hope and prosperity, adopting them into his own creation and blessing them, offering them a guiding light. The old gods did not like this one bit, and went to war with the creator god, resulting in the creator God winning but Thea being split into two separate planets and being placed in two different (in sync) timelines. The resulting worlds, being Faye and Terra.
Faye is a fantasy world, one whose technology (while similar to Earth's) had developed with the influence of magic, spells and renewable energy, where a lot of iconic fantasy races have generally learned to live alongside each other; human, orc, elf, goblin, troll, dragon, fairy, mermaid, as well as a few original races; beastkin (humans with animal ears/tails), lizardmen, dolls (their analogue to A.I. but with actual souls) and draconics (human/beastking-dragon hybrids). They’ve united mostly with the purposes of fighting the demons, monsters and devils that plague their world. Its geography is defined by four distinct continents; Mu, Lemuria, Greater Andria and Faunos, with five large islands; Agartha, Atlantis, Lesser Andria, El Dorado and Buyan.
Mu and El Dorado have hot, tropical climates that house most of Faye’s savannas and jungles, as well as a lot of tropical creatures; from the typical Afro-Eurasian animals we think of, to nandi bears, cherufe, tarrasque and popobawa to name a few. But since Mu and Lemuria once shared a connecting land bridge, they both share some wildlife with each other.
Lemuria and Atlantis have mild, temperate climates with a lot of temperate deserts & shrubland, oak & pine forest, and mountainous regions. It’s home to American-European wildlife, but also home to dragons, unicorn, pegasus, kelpie, lung, and nappa rebobs for example.
Greater Andria and Lesser Andria are hot, dry lands isolated from the rest of Faye and are pretty much just vast, open desert for the majority of the continent’s interior, with billabongs and wetlands strung throughout. Australian/New Guinea and desert wildlife are found here, but so are death worms, cockatrice, skinwalkers, thunderbirds, wyverns and bunyip are just a few examples of what can be found here.
Faunos and Buyan are on opposite sides of the world but exist in the polar regions, with harsh weather and climatic conditions that mean only the hardiest of peoples and creatures can survive. Zelandia sits in the arctic regions, and is home to many iconic arctic animals, but also hides wendigos, yetis, hibagons, ice dragons, griffin, hugag within its confines. Buyan, on the other hand, has no wildlife outside of seals and penguins.
Terra is a world where the gods, not even the creator one, had a lot of influence in its development, resulting in primordial evolutions to drive the evolution of various creatures across Terra, resulting in the birth of the “archaeopsid”; sauropods, theropods, ceratopsians, synapsids, giant insects, primitive mammals, placoderms and a plethora of other primeval creatures drove the mythological monsters that remaining from Thea into extinction, and influenced Terra developments into a pseudo sci-fi world which, looks a lot like our world, but with more sci-fi elements like A.I.s, armored cars, far more powerful fire arms etc., with large electric barrier to keep untamed/domesticated archaeopsids out of their cities. All of which are powered by nuclear energy or plasma energy. The only people on terra are humans, with the occasional robotic assistant. The world of Terra has up to EIGHT continents with smaller island strung through out; North Beringia, South Beringia, Gondwana, Balkanatolia, Zealandia, Laurentia, Pellucidar, and Pangea. All scattered across two major oceans; the Tethys and Neo-tethys.
North Beringia and Pellucidar are smack dab in the middle of the equator, resulting in the souther, central and northern parts of the continents having vastly different biomes all in one landmass; vast open deserts and savannas, temperate woodland & grassland and expansive tundras. North American and European holocene animals are found on each continent respectively, but it is also home to a plethora of ice age and cretaceous animals.
South Beringia and Pangea are in the tropical hemispheres; South Beringia being composed mostly of thick tropical rainforest, long river systems, jagged mountain regions and rainshadow deserts. Pangea is mostly grassland, with jungles strung throughout. South Beringia is composed of South American animals from the holocene-miocene, jurassic and triassic wildlife, while Pangea is composed mostly of African animals from the holocene, cretaceous and early tertiary animals.
Gondwana is an island continent and Zealandia is a large island down south of it. Due to its isolation, more ancient forms of archaeopsids still reside here, though the arrival of ancient peoples did bring the first dinosaurs to Gondwana. Gondwana is mostly desert with damp forests along the sides and upper point, and is inhabited by animals from the permian, devonian and carboniferous periods as well as ice age Australia, with coelophysis now taking up the role of some extinct gorgonopsians. Zealandia is a mostly wet, temperate climate with cold snows in the south, and consists mostly of ice age Tasmanian animals, carboniferous, devonian and pliocene animals.
Balkanatolia is a continent attached to Pellucidar and formerly Pangea. It is a continent very similar to both; filled with thick jungles and tropical grasslands, where ancient traditions still rule. Afro-Eurasian animals from the holocene thrive here, as well as animals from the miocene, late tertiary, cretaceous and jurassic.
Laurentia is the southernmost continent, isolated from the rest and is one big ice desert. Much like Buyan, it is only home to penguins, seals and other antarctic adapted animals.
The basic gist is that Terra and Faye are slowly coming back together via portals to the other, kind of like the anomalies in Primeval. Allowing creatures from both world to restart the ecological war that formed Terra, introduces magic and technology from both worlds that have a huge effect in how each world develops from here on out, and opens a lot of questions and conflict and play with a unique combination of genres and creatures you don't really see interact all too often. How would prehistoric and mythological creatures interact? What if wizards and sorcerers started imbuing magic into guns as a superior alternative to wands? Indefinitely renewable magical energies competing with nuclear and solar power? What if the portals and people coming through could be a conflict in of itself?
In any case, I should probably talk about the story now: the story if currently titled “The Girl from mTwo Worlds”, and it follows Winnipeg Atamgat, or Winnie for short; a girl adopted into a family on Terra who lives a happy, rural life on her family’s organic farm along with her younger sister, two parents, her imaginary friend, Snoots the snake, and her emotional support animal; an inostrancevia named Winston, who helps her out when her frequent panic attacks set it. Life is good, until a group of young warriors find themselves trapped on Terra, claiming that she is their friend. After some time and with the connection between Terra and Faye is established, it is determined she is indeed the reincarnation of one of their most revered princesses, and due to diplomatic reasons, is forced to go live on Faye for a while and return to a lifestyle she has ideas about. But the longer she spends with these warriors and on Faye, memories of her past life start to resurface, revealing how she got to Terra and why the panic attacks even happen, all tying back to her mysterious imaginary friend. As such, it becomes a story about home vs heritage, found family vs blood family, and processing trauma and ultimately moving on from it, all leading to the biggest hurdle Winnie will have to face; should she stay on Terra or stay on Faye?
That is my world and concept expanded further. If anyone can think of better names for this project, I’d like to know.

2023.05.13 06:39 moth337 Why is the Cambrian one period containing two epochs when the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian are so different?

I have been reading about the Carboniferous for a paleoart project and I learned that the Cambrian is split in half with a major extinction. I also noticed that the way the GSA geologic time scale 5.0 lists the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian in a different way to other Epochs. I would love to get some insight on how this works.
Edit: I'm probably wrong about a lot of this 😅 I'm really hoping someone can point out my mistakes.
