2024.05.14 03:57 Gull_On_Gull An unbelievable story

In my youth, a few decades ago, I met an only boy a few years older than me, in his early twenties named Tyler at a coffee shop. He drove a blue wrangler and was smoking cigarettes in the village with a friend at the only coffee shop in the early foggy morning. I think I may have bummed a cigarette on my way out the door with my americano and began to make conversation. Tyler had just drove from Seattle and boasted of his time back to get his friend home to Carmel Valley. We started talking about music, my favorite band was Modest Mouse. His was some one I’ve never heard of. He was very cool. Plump but cool. He’s seen modest mouse on the Lonesome Crouded West tour. Brock drank whiskey out of a plastic water bottle. Rebel. Then he told me another story.
Tyler had gotten busted for something illegal which I’ve forgotten now, but had gone before a judge and sentenced to a lot of community service. More than 100 hours. I don’t remember what it was but it wasn’t anything serious. More like what a normal adolescent who was unlucky enough to get caught was issued. At the time he lived just north of San Francisco and was given options to what his services would be. Tyler chose trail maintenance. Tyler worked for weeks. It was summer and was home with his parents waking up at dawn, grabbing breakfast and lunch at the local Safeway before heading to the hills to clear trails for 10 hours. Going home exhausted.
One morning Tyler saw an old man outside the grocery store, looking very tired. It was close to 5am. He approached the old man and offered to buy him a sandwich. The old man said he would very much like a sandwich. Returning with the food the old man asked what Tyler was doing that morning and Tyler explained that he was maintaining a broken trail that was high in the mountains close by. The old man seemed interested in this answer and offered to help for another sandwich and some beer to which Tyler obliged even though alcohol was a violation of parole. But Tyler was a rebel and wasn’t directly supervised once on the trail he was working, so he got another sandwich and a few tall cans and rode away with the old man to the hills.
Tyler told me the old man took direction well and ran off with a few tools and worked all day. He made sure the man had done what he asked throughout the day and was pleasantly surprised to see he was a good worker. They took lunch, drank their beers, worked for a few more hours and at the end of the day, the two hiked back to the blue Jeep Wrangler and headed back.
Tyler asked the old man direction to where this seeming homeless man wanted to be dropped off. Expecting a bridge or over pass. The old man didn’t give an address but immediate signals, left here, right here, straight here. The house style was passing slowly got bigger. Gates more decorative. The cars that passed were nicer.
“This guy must have a nice camping spot” Tyler told me. His suspicion never alerting.
The old man pulled up to a gate with a touch pad. Pretty fancy in 2000. The old man pressed the code. The gate opened.
A long driveway. A big house in trees. The mad shows Tyler into his house. Tyler is astonished. It beautiful. The old man leads Tyler into a library, there are gold records on the wall. He studies a few and the old man gets settled, fiddling with things. Bits and bops.
All the records say: Tom Waits
Tyler looks at the man. The man stairs back with a smile as he opens a floor to ceiling cabinet full of liquor bottles.
“I hope you like whiskey” he says with a smile.
Tyler expresses that before this day he had listened to Tom waits but hadn’t seen or noticed a picture or the man. His recollection of the night that fallowed was also hazy. Or he didn’t think my reaction was merit enough to continue the story. He slept on the couch in the study and woke up at dawn to go work trails.
I never saw Tyler again.
Are there more stories like this out there?

2024.05.14 00:51 Reptar_Mousse The tone-deafness of her saying the were looking for a "bougie" restaurant in Paris...

I can't decide if she is conveniently forgetting high school history class, or if she really doesn't know that "bougie" is a shortening of the word bourgeois, a word to describe the Bourgeoisie class of PARISIANS, the wealthy group of people between peasants and aristocrats... Also this other definition used in more modern times: "in Marxist theory, the powerful capitalist class that owns and is concerned with property, as contrasted with the wage-earning class, which must concern itself with survival: the interests of the bourgeoisie are opposed to revolution and invested in the status quo: According to Marx, the rise of the bourgeoisie split the whole of society into two enemy camps—the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Many postcolonial societies in the 21st century are hindered by greedy and repressive bourgeoisies."
Colleen, your whole trip is "bougie". Regular people couldn't drop everything on 2 days notice to buy tickets to a concert, first-class flights to and from a city 5,600 miles away, and a few nights stay in a fancy hotel. Including getting a passport in 1 day (what her friend said she had to do, lets assume Colleen's was still valid). Regular people right now are struggling to buy groceries each week. But hey, at least she accurately categorized herself instead of play acting poor for once.

2024.05.13 22:53 Familiar-Objective11 Unfinished first draft of my opening to my solo playthrough of Phandelver and Below. Nearly broke 2,000 words in my first evening!

Below is the opening to my solo playthrough of Phandelver and Below. I've never played the module, but I was introduced to D&D through one of it's many actual plays, and I've always wanted to play the story myself. I thought it would be fun to use my semi-familiarity with the story to run a solo game, allowing me to simultaneously practice my writing. The opening is meant to detail how the Wave Echo Cave was found by the Rockseeker brothers, and explain why my characters are willing to help old Gundren. Below you'll find my version of how the cave was rediscovered and get introduced to my first PC, a young gnome with dreams of becoming a wizard, Erkyfrune 'Kyfrune' Filkor. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it!

The Lost Mine of Phandelver
A Solo-Play RPG
Nundro Finds the Cave
Gundren Rockseeker finalized his order with Umphrey Baggort’s General Goods shortly before the midday bell. He had a few hours before he’d be meeting Sildar at The Widow’s Tankard to go over their planned route one last time. They were to leave for Phandalin in the morning. There he would reunite with his brothers, Nundro and Thardin, and return to Wave Echo Cave.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He still found it hard to believe they had found it. Five-hundred years it remained hidden, and all it had taken to locate it was Nundro’s constant clumsiness. He’d tripped, seemingly over nothing, and rolled down the side of a cliff, crashing to a stop amongst an outcropping of large boulders. Gundrin and Thardin had rushed down to him, only to find Nundro laughing like a madman, the dripping blood from his broken nose smearing across his mouth and beard, making him look like a cannibalistic court jester.
“Listen!” He’d shouted, blood spraying from his lips. “The waves! Do you hear them?!”
Gundren, sure Nundro had finally cracked his head one too many times, was hearing nothing more than the sloshing of his own addled brains, but Thardin lowered himself to the stoney ground and pushed his ears against the boulders.
“He’s right, Gundren,” Thardin said, ear still pressed against the large stone, “It’s as if the very Shining Sea were trapped underfoot.”
Nundro stood there, smiling, dripping blood into the dust and stone. “Wave Echo Cave,” He whispered, “It’s ours!”
They’d camped there amongst the boulders, using their picks and shovels to chip away the ground around one of the boulders enough to get their pry bars wedged solidly underneath. It took all three of them, hanging and hopping from the bar like the rumored monkeys of Chult, but they managed to shift it enough that gravity took hold and yanked the giant stone down the embankment, where it shattered amongst the less regal hills surrounding the eastern edges of Phandalin.
It took all of the next day to clear away enough of the stoney ground to reveal the small tunnel entrance that had been buried beneath rubble, rock, and passing time. The sounds of crashing waves seemed enormous in the silence surrounding them.
“We can’t simply walk into there with lanterns and a few day’s rations,” Thardin had said. “We’ll need to set up an excavation camp, which will require a trip back to Neverwinter.”
None of the brothers wanted to leave, but Gundren and Thardin agreed Nundro deserved to stay, being the true locator of the legendary site. They flipped a coin. Thardin won, and Gundrin left the next morning for Neverwinter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He’d gotten nearly everything prepared for his departure. There was just one final order of business to take care of, adventurers willing to see the wagon safely to Barthen’s Provisions. And, if they proved capable and loyal, perhaps they could be hired on to clear out the cave on the inevitable creatures that had occupied it during its many forgotten years.
He listened as the final ring of the city bells reverberated into silence, then turned north, heading towards Filkor’s Gadgets and Repairs. There he knew he would find at least one willing adventurer, assuming the boy’s father would let him leave the safety of the shop.
Kyfrune
Erkyfrune Filkor sipped his tea while his father adjusted the small spring in his latest iteration of a years-long obsession.
“I’m telling you Erky, I am this close to figuring it out.” His father, Erkaline, said. The it in question being a nail clipper capable of transforming itself to meet the varying needs of any fingernail, claw, or talon. “Once I finally figure it out, we can move out of this dump and into a properly respectable district. It’s not right for the descendants of Elisytris Filkor to be living in squalor. He was quintessential to the Forge of Spells, you know!”
Erkyfrune, Kyfrune to anyone besides his father, knew this very well. He’d heard the story more times than he could count. Who knew if there was any truth in it, but he loved his father, and feigned interest again, if just so he would be able to concentrate on the story and let his fingers work their talented tinker’s magic.
His father was just getting to the part where Great-Grandfather Elisytris single-handedly took on a trio of raiding bandits and their evil wizard overseer when the three bells above the storefront sounded, signaling a customer, one Kyfrune and Erkaline knew well. Gundren and his brothers had been coming to them for years, always in need of some intricate tool or another to assist in a prospecting project. Kyfrune had always felt a spark of envy for their adventurous life, delving into the ruins of the past for lost treasures and tomes. The latter interested him in particular, for even though his father disapproved, Kyfrune wanted nothing more than to learn the mysteries of Mystra and her magical weave that permeated the very fabrics of reality. Already he’d learned a few spells, and had even recently conjured his first familiar, a celestial wolf spider, he lovingly referred to as Walter.
“Couldn’t you have conjured something less…disgusting? A cat would have at least had fur.” His father had grumbled when Kyfrune had shown him his new magical pet.
“Walter has fur,” Kyfrune had argued.
“Nothing with eight legs should have fur,” his father had replied, shaking his head and returning to one of his seemingly infinite projects. “You should focus more on your craft. One day, you’ll be the Filkor that the sign out front is referring to.”
Kyfrune wasn’t a terrible tinker, but he’d never be capable of the wonders his father could produce. Besides, tinkering was Erkaline’s thing. He never said this, of course. Being a good son was just as important to Kyfrune as learning to bend the energies of the multiverse to his whim.
“Gundren! What can I do for you my friend?” Erkaline asked, removing the magnifying glasses he wore when working. “Need some more of those explosive crickets? How’d that first batch work for you?”
“Howdy Mr. Filkor, Kyfrune, everything going well I hope?” Gundren asked, removing the floppy hat he’d always worn since Kyfrune had known him.
“Can’t say I can complain, anything that’s wrong I just haven’t gotten round to fixin’ yet, and what can’t be fixed, can be made anew” His father laughed at this old joke, and Gundren, the kind patron he was, laughed along as well, even though he’d heard this one probably every time he’d come to the shop.
“Too true Mr. Filkor, your capable hands are powered by an even more capable mind. I, ah, am not actually here for any services you’d normally provide. I’m actually wanting to offer Kyfrune a small job,” Gundren turns to the younger gnome, “I’ve heard you’ve a decent grasp of the weave, any truth in those rumors?”
Kyfrune, bringing the cup of tea to his mouth for another sip, was caught off guard by the unexpected question, and spilled most of his remaining tea over his work shirt. Rather than answer Gundren, which his ever-present social awkwardness would have caused him to stammer meekly through, he waved his hands over his sodden shirt and muttered a simple incantation. The tea, lemon ginger with lots of honey, simply faded, leaving his shirt dry and spotless.
“That’s quite the trick, any bandits or goblins with brains in their skulls would run screaming from such deadly powers,” Gundren laughed, not unkindly. “Seriously Kyf, do you think you could provide protection for a wagon of supplies I’ve ordered? It’s not going far, just down the High Road a ways and east along the Triboar Trail, to a small settlement called Phandalin. It’d need to be brought to a gentleman named Barthen. He owns Barthen’s Provisions, and will pay you 10 gold once you’ve delivered the wagon. Normally I’d go with it myself, but I’ve got to meet Nundro and Thardin as soon as possible,” he leans closer and whispers, “We’ve found something. Something pretty big. If you do well with the wagon, maybe I could bring you in on the excavation of a legendary site, thought to be lost to time.”
“You can’t mean-” Erkaline began, but Gundren cut him off with a curt wave.
“Best not to speak of anything now. Ears and eyes are known to be anywhere, and I’m not wanting any competition. What do you say Mr. Filkor, can you spare young Kyfrune for a week or so, two out the most?”
Kyfrune looked to his father, who rubbed his large nose and pulled at his forked beard, largely white now, with only a few streaks of the once inky black that had been its original color. He wasn’t going to beg or plead. He loved his father, and would do as he bid, but oh sweet Mystra, please let him say yes.
“I suppose, if you can promise it’d be no more than a week or so, I could spare my apprentice,” his father began, then turned to Kyfrune, “But Erkyfrune, you listen and listen good. I never liked your messing with this magic nonsense, but I understood your youth. Consider this your pilgrimage into the world of adventure. Upon your return, I expect you to set aside these childish fancies and start putting the work in that is necessary for you to take over the shop. Agreed?”
Kyfrune’s heart somehow managed to soar and plummet at the same time, leaving him with a momentary feeling of unsteadiness. To finally be given approval to venture forth into the world, a world that wanted him to wield his magical abilities, only to have the approval tethered to a promise to walk away from his dream. His father’s serious eyes looked at him expectantly.
“Yes, Father. Your terms are agreeable, and I thank you for allowing me to experience an adventure before settling into my destined path.”
His father’s gaze faltered momentarily, but he quickly regained his composure, turning to Gundren, “Well Gundren, it would seem you have yourself a wizard. You’re not planning on sending my boy out on the road alone are you?”
“Of course not, sir. He’ll be accompanied by at least two more souls, although I’m not sure of who they are as of yet.”
Erkaline smiled, “I’m sure the great city of Neverwinter will provide you with a couple more adventurers for your quest.”
Gundren nodded, then placed his hat upon his head. “I’ll need Kyfrune at The Widow’s Tankard by ninth bell,” he looked to Kyfrune, “ I’ll have the contract ready and’ll buy you dinner. I’ll show you the route you’ll need to take, and, perhaps, I’ll fill you in on more of the details.” His eyes glinted with excitement. “Be well Mr. Finkor,” he said, then walked out the door. The three bells above the door sounded very loud in the quiet shop. Kyfrune turned to his father, who was putting the magnifying glasses back into position and settling himself at his workbench.
“I suppose I should pack my things,” he said.
“I suppose you should son,” Erkaline looked up from the nail clippers that he hoped would change his and his son’s lot in life, “Be careful, okay. Take in the world, experience your adventure, heck, shoot off some of those spells you know, but please, be careful.”
Kyfrune walked around the bench and hugged his father tightly, then walked upstairs to his small room to pack. He’d never felt more excited in his entire life.

I have not locked in many sites as I would like some feedback on "must see" in each location. I have some temples and shriens and other locations in my notes, but have not kocked in many speciifcs as I would appreciate thoughts on things "I can't miss" on each city stop. Appreciate any thoughts.
Also, really want to see Mount Fuji...so I booked for day trip. I may alter depending on weather...but is it feasible for a day and possibly last day?
Also, is Nara a good day trip from Osaka?

2024.05.13 20:06 GTAinreallife Full slanted walls, how do they work?

I was trying to make a fancy diagonal line in my camp, but god forbid if you try to do something fancier than a square box... the full slanted wall doesnt connect to anything and even it if shows up as blue, it cant be placed down...
Ive tried placing it on top of a arch (to make a full wall) and it says its floating. Other posts claim that no other walls or floors should be touching it, but even then it shows as floating.
Others claim it has to be connected to a roof or floor, but in both cases the error now turns into that it is intersecting with existing objects.
Can you even place these walls down at all?

2024.05.13 19:32 Epididymis23 US West Coast Roadtrip Final 18-day Itinerary

Hi All!
My wife and me will leave to the US from Europe for a West Coast Roadtrip and I have a 95% finalised itinerary but if there are any recommended activities that I am missing or if I packed too much in a day, please advise. Campgrounds and all of the activities which need reservations are already reserved. Specialty coffee places and food tips are very welcome, we are not picky at all but love to eat basically anything from Five Guys to gourmet restaurants.
Day 1 - Arrive at 17:30 in San Francisco airport and take our rental car, drive to Pacifica Taco Bell for dinner, shop in Walmart or any other chain for roadtrip groceries and sleep in the Inn at Moss Landing, heading down there on Highway 1
Day 2 - Whale watch with blue ocean whale watching at 9 a.m. Head down to Monterey after that for lunch, check out Carmel by the Sea and because of the road closure at Big Sur head down to our next accomodation in Cambria for the evening
Day 3 - Leave in the morning, check out Hearst Castle and elephant seal watch and San Simeone, coffee at Scout coffee in San Luis Obispo, fast food for lunch, check out Morro Bay and Montana de Oro or Pismo beach and drive to Los Angeles in the evening to the hotel.
Day 4 - Universal Studio in the morning, mainly Harry Potter world and after we are finished there, check out the sunset at Griffith Observatorium and walk to Vista or Los Feliz Cinema to watch a classic movie and if there is time go to a bar for cocktails in the proximity.
Day 5 - Check out Santa Monica Pier, go down to Sports Basement to pick up car camping rentals (inflatable bed, trekking poles, sleeping bag) and drive to Joshua Tree campground for a late afternoon, evening hike and sleep in the campground.
Day 6 - Wake up early and do another hike in the morning, after that drive to Las Vegas hotel. Check out the Strip and then put it all on red in the hotel casino? We have a room in a great hotel so this may be a more relaxing afternoon / day.
Day 7 - Leave LV in the morning and drive through or to Valley of Fire State Park for a little while and arrive in Zion National Park in the afternoon to do a very short hike (Watchman Trail).
Day 8 - Scout Lookout trip and The Narrows in Zion NP in the morning and use the shuttle back, either to the car or if we have time and energy to see the Emerald Pools. Leave late and arrive to our Page accomodation late in the evening
Day 9 - Head to the Horseshoe Bend very early to see the sunrise (it is really close from our airbnb). Booked Antalope Canyon tour for early afternoon. Drive to Grand Canyon Mather campground in the afternoon, if possible catch the sunset there and sleep in the campground.
Day 10 - Start in the morning, hike the South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge or Skeleton Point depending on the weather and our energy level. Long drive in the afternoon to Death Valley Furnace Creek campground and arrive there in the evening for sleep and stargazing.
Day 11 - This seems like a really exhausting day but will have a rest day after this. Wake up really early and drive to Sequoia National Park, have a shorter hike (Moro rock trail or eagle viewpoint) and maybe the General Sherman Tree. In the afternoon drive to a hotel in Oakhurst for the night.
Day 12 - Relax in the hotel, maybe check out Bass Lake in the vicinity? If we are not tired, which I think we will be then maybe hike in Yosemite that day, too.
Day 13 - Lower Pines campground reservation, all-day hike. Recommendation for hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 14 - Whole day Yosemite. Recommendation for all day hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 15 - Multiple options, do not know which would be the best or most viable option:
  1. Hike again in Yosemite all day and drive to San Francisco hotel late in the afternoon
  2. Maybe a short hike in Yosemite and drive to Lake Tahoe, Emerald bay for a short time and after that drive to San Francisco hotel for the night
  3. Maybe a short hike in Yosemite and drive to Big Sur as the road closures will be lifted by then, check out Pfeiffer Falls for a short time and drive back to San Francisco hotel
Day 16 - Relaxing days ahead, chill sightseeing in SF, Golden Gate Park and mission district maybe fishermans wharf. Go to a bar for cocktails.
Day 17 - Alcatraz day tour, more sightseeing in SF, recommendations are welcome. Dinner in State Bird Provisions for our last full day.
Day 18 - Last day, check out of the hotel, drink some coffee and grab some fast food, maybe a very light walk in SF and head to the airport to leave at 4:25 pm.
All of the recommendations are very welcome and thanks in advance!

2024.05.13 17:21 KayDubYo Newly acquired Shiba

We have recently acquired custody of my brother-in-law's Shiba puppy. He has a really busy schedule and it just doesn't work with having a puppy. I had recently had to put my dog of 10 years down due to cancer so we decided to take the puppy. The puppy has been really great so far. He is good with the kids and our other dog. Are there any tips and tricks that you guys can give us on training the puppy? He is about 4 months old and we are starting obedience classes next week, hopefully. We like to camp as a family so we want him to be comfortable outside also. We have never had a purebred puppy before and we don't know how that might effect training and such. ( We are more 'adopt the most mixed breed dog at a kennel' type of people). His name is Azuki, but since we brought him home 2 night ago he has been called Archie, fancy pants, bean, and hob goblin.

Hi there! I’ve posted once before about surprising my partner with a camping trip to GNP in July. The campsites are all booked and I plan to tell him about this surprise on his birthday soon. I’d like to give him a little gift basket with the itinerary.
What would you put in a gift basket to tell someone about a trip to GNP?
TIA! Also I’ve learned a lot from this sub so thank you :)

2024.05.13 16:43 Altruistic-Light5275 Settlement placement on the world map in Outpostia

Settlement placement on the world map in Outpostia
In the previous posts, we learned about how faction territories are procedurally generated and divided in Outpostia, and today's post is about settlements placement on the world map.
Generated settlements on the world map in Outpostia
Basically, the same problem that applies to territory division also applies to settlement placement: total randomness is not going to look pretty on the world map, but you also would like to avoid placing all of them manually, especially within a procedurally generated game. So I've chosen to place settlements within faction territories, which we calculated earlier: as each faction's territory was calculated based on clusters, each of them having a cluster center, we already could use cluster group center as the capital and cluster centers as region capitals. The problem is that in such a way, if you later want to change the number of clusters per faction, you would automatically change the number of region capitals, and anyway, what would you do about villages and towns?
Generated settlements with only capitals placed while there is only 1 region per faction
At this point, it's clear that we need to define some kind of settlement hierarchy, its population, and information about whether it is a capital or not. In my case, I've decided to stick to a quite simple hierarchy which at the same time allows players to feel some kind of progress as they acquire more colonists:
  1. Camp
  2. Outpost
  3. Hamlet
  4. Small village
  5. Village
  6. Big village
  7. Town
  8. Small city
  9. City
  10. Big city
  11. Metropolis
  12. Megalopolis
Regarding the population size, you could basically set any values you would like to see in your game because even city builders are struggling with simulating real numbers. Nevertheless, your game would also need to have larger settlements rather than only small dying villages. I've decided for the Camp to have a population of 0 people (rather temporary settlements) and for the biggest city to have a population of about 500 - a reasonable maximum which I plan for the basic configuration of Outpostia.
For the purpose of simplification, I've decided to procedurally generate only certain settlement sizes during world generation: Metropolis, City, Village, and Outpost, and with the laziest solution, the biggest of them all will be used as a template for capitals.
Generated settlements on the world map in Outpostia - maximal reasonable distance resulting in lesser amount of settlements
Now comes the tricky part: how do you place them? I've decided on the following solution: starting with the biggest generated hierarchy, for each faction, I'm taking all of its claimed territory and calculating how many settlements could theoretically fit into that area (with the exception of capitals having a constant value of 1) having the soft limit of X tiles between settlements defined for each type of settlement. Next, using the algorithms from the previous post, I'm going to calculate as many cluster centers as I need settlements of a given type (tiles amount / PI * Math.Pow(distance, 2)), but before placing them at the cluster centers, I also randomly shift them somewhere a bit. And before going to the process the next type of settlement (and calculate their clusters again), I also want to claim Y tiles around the settlement center as tiles used by the settlement, and most importantly: remove Z tiles around the placed settlement as a hard limit, to enforce later algorithms to ignore already used places. Obviously, you could steer those parameters of the distance between settlements, and there is also one easy thing I have not done yet, that you could do to allow player easier configuration of his favorite worlds: a modifier with slider for changing automatically calculated amount of settlements by some amount.
Generated settlements on the world map in Outpostia - minimal reasonable distance resulting in a larger amount of settlements
Obviously, during the placement, you would have to check if some random hiccups in calculations have not resulted in creating a new Venice, check if the position is really not used by some other settlements within Y tiles of the hard limit, push settlements when they try to illegally cross the borders, and things like that.
So, now you have generated settlements and placed them on the world map. In the next step, you would like to procedurally connect them by roads, isn't it? That would be the topic of the next post. Stay tuned.

3 month world trip -- packing help
I am about to leave for a three month trip that involves multiple countries, climates and activities and am trying to figure out my capsule wardrobe. Please let me know if I am missing anything or if I should remove any items! Here is the basic itinerary: leave for Crete this week, then fly to Albania for a couple of weeks (activities include the Theth-Valbona hike, beaches, visiting towns), then I will quickly be in Madrid for a concert and back to Crete for the rest of June. In July I am doing a three week group tour in southern Africa from Victoria Falls to Cape Town where I will be camping most nights and going on safaris. Then I will be in Indonesia for a couple of weeks where I will visit religious sites, go to beaches and go on some hikes. Lastly, I will be in Singapore for a few days in mid August.

2024.05.13 05:19 StellarLime911 Is a ram upgrade enough for my 2017 iMac to handle unreal engine better?

I screw around with a third person shooter template in unreal engine from time to time, and while my stock 2017 iMac handles it relatively well via boot camp (avg 20 FPS), I was wondering if just a RAM upgrade would be enough to boost performance a bit. I dont mind using low graphics, but tasks like opening google chrome can take 30 seconds, and I’d just like for the computer to run a bit faster. Thanks.

2024.05.13 05:11 GeminiPestdeath Environments: Breakdown and How to Make Your Own

As I've been GMing a Daggerheart campaign, I've had to throw together a few homebrew things in order to keep things fresh and engaging for my players as well as scale some things on the fly that weren't covered by the existing text. One of those bits are Environments, which I absolutely love (and so does this Reddit if a few topics are any indicator). So I'm making this topic to discuss how I go about making my own environments and what I've extrapolated from pre-existing ones in the Playtest material.

Breaking Down Pre-Existing Environments: Base Stats

To make an environment without rules or a template, we need to take a critical eye to what is being provided and see if we can't figure out general "guidelines" on how the developers make them. The most obvious stuff is that we need a Tier, Type, Difficulty, and Potential Adversaries to form a statblock.
The golden rule about environments is that an environment's effects need not be necessarily detrimental to the players. A variety of environments offer beneficial effects to PCs, though this is predominantly through environmental passives - more on that later.
Tier is simply what level your party is at. This information is covered in the playtest material more in depth as to what tier your players should be encountering, but a general rule is that the environment will match the same tier as your adversaries.
Type is broken down into four categories:
Difficulty is simply the "goal" or number that players' rolls typically have to meet in order for an environment's conditions to proc, but as stated in the playtest material, an individual adversary's difficulty may differ.
Potential Adversaries are exactly that! Your adversary choices should roughly be made to fit in the environment. While having your party encounter Pirates can be novel and fun, it wouldn't make much sense to have Pirates in a Desert environment without some decent story-telling and worldbuilding.
The stats of our environment are ultimately the mechanical side of things, but they help to express how dangerous that environment is. A peaceful city is a much different environment than a pirate haven much the same way that a cordial shop is much different than a royal court! Consider how our stats express how dangerous or challenging the environment is for our players, respective to their tier.
On the subject of the stats expressing the challenge of your environments, we need to ask ourselves some questions about how that environment is defined: If our Forest Meadow is Traversal (which as you'll remember tends to be more difficult/dangerous than Exploration), what is it that makes it a Traversal environment? Perhaps the grass here has a toxic pollen that hampers the PCs, causing them to mark Stress on failed Strength rolls when they breathe it in as their fortitude fails them! Or maybe the meadow has secret pitfalls at every turn that risk characters twisting an ankle if they aren't savvy enough to spot them through the foliage!
Difficulty is a bit more of a consideration. To start, remember to stick to our party's Tier and base it on that. This is actually covered in the Playtest document with a general baseline by tier, but we can have a range if we want something a little more or less significant. I recommend a range of -/+1 and no more than that. Your environment can be easier to overcome with not-so-hostile effects, or it can be particularly challenging and harsh on failure! I personally like to contrast my difficulty values with my damage values, with lower difficulties having higher damages and vice versa.
Damage is a tricky part. As mentioned, I like to scale difficulty and damage contrasting one another, but generally speaking, our environment should not do more damage than is necessary to impose a Major threshold's worth of damage. For this, I like to have higher difficulty/lower damage focus on the Minor threshold, and higher difficulty/lower damage focus on the Major threshold. A strange consideration in the playtest material is that the Tier 3 guidelines suggest a whopping 4d12 damage base which is fairly reliable for nailing the Major threshold, so my suggestions alter from the norm there to account for it as the highest possible damage output.
To simplify all of this, let's put it in a table:
Tier 0 Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
Playtest Suggested Difficulty 11 14 17 20
My Suggested Difficulty 10 - 12 13 - 15 16 - 18 19 - 21
Playtest Suggested Damage 1d6 2d8 2d12 4d12
My Suggested Damage 1d4+1, 1d6, 2d6+2 1d8, 2d8, 2d6+5 1d8+1, 2d12, 2d12+5 2d6, 4d8+7, 4d12
An Example: I've made an environment with a Difficulty of 13, which is slightly less than is suggested for a Tier 1 environment. To compensate for an easier difficulty to overcome, I've scaled the damage a little higher to potentially dip into Major Threshold territory. This signifies that my environment - while not as overtly challenging - is still quite dangerous if the character doesn't take it seriously!

Passives, Reactions, Actions, and Fear

Now we're getting into the true meat and fun part of crafting an environment. We need to consider what happens in our environment, but to do that we need to take a magnifying glass to what makes an Action... well, an Action! We'll look at a few examples provided by the developers and see how we can draw inspiration from those.

Passives

Passives are typically fairly mundane and non-hostile to our players. In fact, many Passives are actually quite beneficial to our players in certain conditions! Environmental passives can offer beneficial effects on trait rolls for players, such as having advantage on a trait roll or a beneficial modifier to those rolls. However, to gain these, players typically have to sacrifice something of value or put in some measure of work to get them. This can either be offering up gold (such as the Bustling Marketplace) or by doing some investigative work with a Presence roll (such as the Local Tavern).
Now, an important distinction for Passives is that it largely depends on the environment's type. Whereas Social environments tend to offer players beneficial effects, Traversal are quite the opposite! Traversal passives can sometimes include a Progress Countdown, requiring players to perform several trait rolls in order to overcome the environment's passive condition. A good example of this is The Climb passive of the Cliffside Ascent, which requires players achieve multiple successes to reach the top. Otherwise, they might not reach the apex or, worse, fall to their deaths!
When making passives, consider if the environment would play to player's favor or if there is some challenge to overcome.

Reactions

Reactions are a bit uncommon, but do have a place! Reactions generally are what happens if a PC engages in a certain activity. Maybe they've failed a roll and some negative consequence occurs as a result (such as the Gossip reaction of the Baronial Court). Maybe they've ventured off by themselves and become separated from the party (such as the Crowd Closes In reaction of the Bustling Marketplace).
Reactions typically only incur a Stress mark on failure for the offending player, but they can affect multiple players at once depending on the circumstances. Remembering our golden rule, however, these reactions may not necessarily be damaging to the players! A player might perform an action in an environment that denotes a beneficial result like turning a Fear roll into a Hope roll (such as the Relentless Hope reaction of the Hallowed Temple).
When considering Reactions, think about something a player is likely to do in that environment. A sacred garden with lots of lowers might prompt a player to smell the roses, but if those roses are living and don't want to be disturbed, they might be a bit more prickly than the player expects!
Reactions can come with a Fear cost, but most of what I'll talk about with that will be covered in the Actions section, so keep reading!

Actions: True Actions and 'Fearful' Actions

Actions, in a word, are diverse in their application, and are the bread and butter of your environments. They are generally how the GM influences the story directly in a way that ups the stakes. This is primarily through the use of GM Moves and Fear tokens and serve as a fantastic way for the GM to utilize these resources outside of combat. To clarify a few things, I've divided actions into two types: True Actions and Fearful Actions, to help denote which ones use which resources.
To start with True Actions, an important distinction for them is that they may be used even without an action tracker in play and regardless of action token costs. This means that a GM can utilize their resources even out of combat! Super handy for when you're capped on Fear and still want to twist the narrative a bit.
Actions in environments are generally how the GM influences a scene by imposing some adversarial encounter that may not necessarily result in a combat encounter. They can be used to summon potentially adversarial NPCs/adversaries to confront the players for a variety of things (such as the You Are Not Welcome Here action in the Abandoned Grove or We Met Again in the Baronial Court). This can be a social confrontation or even a direct, non-violent removal of the players' items (such as the Sticky Fingers action of the Bustling Marketplace).
True Actions are also ways to make things much more difficult for the players through the environment itself interfering with them, imposing trait rolls that come with status conditions on failure (such as the Grasping Vines of The Burning Heart of the Wood). We can also utilize them to keep our adversaries in play, healing their damage or removing their Stress (such as the Aura of Death of the Necromancer's Ossuary).
Yet, our golden rule still applies here, as we as GMs can utilize True Actions to coax the players into things that may benefit them, like finding a rare(r) item they might need/want (such as the Unexpected Find in the Bustling Marketplace).
Fearful Actions are much more insidious and do not benefit the players. These actions require spending Fear tokens and come with nearly guaranteed negative effects toward the players, manifesting primarily as direct summons of adversaries to oppose them or truly difficult circumstances that can include damaging effects. Fearful actions are how we as GMs take a hard narrative twist to directly challenge the players.
These actions are much more narrow in scope but can impose a Progress Countdown to resolve (such as the Framed! action of the Baronial Court) or worse yet, cause direct damage to the player if they fail a trait roll or are not aided in some way (such as the Fall action of the Cliffside Ascent). Moreover, Fearful Actions can even give Adversaries some beneficial effect on spawning, such as coming in unbeknownst to the players or using one of their actions without a cost right off the cuff!
When considering the creation of these actions, consider how the environment or adversaries could impose incredibly difficult circumstances on the players that need not necessarily come from the mechanical stats themselves. Having a Chaldworm pop up immediately with its Superheated buff already going is a huge way to ramp up the stakes in an encounter the players never even knew they were engaged in!

Special Note: Progress Countdowns

Its special because Progress Countdowns are the culmination of long-term effects that the players have to resolve, and should be used sparingly! These can either be attributed to an environment's Passive or Action, may have a Fear cost, or other various circumstances. Ultimately the big consideration here is that Progress Countdowns are a bit of a wildcard but are generally included to up the stakes for the players in a way that goes beyond just the one scene. They may be spending quite a bit of time tracking down that thief that stole their goods (such as the Sticky Fingers action of the Bustling Marketplace)!

Summary

So now that we have an idea of what considerations go into making environments, let's summarize so we can quickly make some environments using the information we've already gone over!
Tier: Base this on your party's level! Type: Refer to prior Type breakdown! Difficulty: Refer to prior table! Potential Adversaries: Specific to your environment and creativity!
Environment Features:
Above all remember the golden rule! Any and all environment effects can benefit the players somehow. Your environments need not necessarily be adversarial to your players; be kind to one another <3

2024.05.13 04:29 woahwolf34 Road tripping Hokkaido in May

Hi all, so I’ll be in Sapporo this week and I was thinking of doing a last minute road trip around Hokkaido. I really wanted to go on some hikes in the further parts of the island but it seems like it might be too cold or snowy for the trails? I’m trying to get a grasp on what I’d actually be able to do and which areas I should concentrate on. I really want to see Shiretoko, if it’s worth it. Also is camping a realistic option or should I focus on staying in towns? I would be doing a 7/8 day road trip and I have international drivers license so no worries there. I’m not really interested in flower fields or anything like that my primary interest is nature and hiking. And I’m sure there’s plenty of places that aren’t snow covered so just curious of what I should consider for my itinerary. Dates would be May 17-24 (Roughly). Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated!

2024.05.13 03:57 IAskSoMnyQuestions Dad sent me a text today saying he's proud of the man I've become...

I went to see my family this weekend to celebrate Mother's Day. It wasn't anything crazy.. we were chill and watched tv together (Fallout is great btw). We had a camp out and ate somewhere fancy.. I enjoyed spending time with them (even if my dad makes... questionable jokes sometimes).
I got back to my apartment today and got a text from my dad... He said that I made Mother's Day special for my mom and he's proud of the man I've become...
I feel happy that he said that... I'm 24 and I've already done so much... I've gone far and I live on my own and overall life feels confusing and scary for me right now. sometimes it feels like I'm not doing enough, or I feel like I'm a worthless piece of shit... But he's proud of me... My Grandfather was proud of me too before he passed...
I wish I didn't have imposter syndrome every damn day... But maybe I am doing something right and I don't realize it.
