Yet, I admit that my analyses about these two have excluded Yuji, which has left a void within my arguments about Jujutsu Kaisen’s power system. I hope for this post to fill that void, for my own sake and others’. By examining Gege’s power system in the framework of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, I will explore the roles that Sukuna, Maki, and Yuji all play within Jujutsu Kaisen along the magical spectrum of sorcery versus the body. Yuki and Kenjaku argue about what should happen to cursed energy, and both of their conclusions include the soul. Why am I referring to Aristotle, and what does he have to do with anime? Not much! Yet, Aristotle’s Metaphysics provides a wonderful framework to understand Gege’s power system as it’s represented by Sukuna, Maki, Yuji, Kenjaku, and Yuki. All of these characters relate to one another in some way, and they all demonstrate or argue the overarching conflict within JJK: sorcery versus the body. Yuki desires a world free from cursed energy, and Kenjaku wants to see cursed energy in its wildest and most dominant form via the merger. Maki acts as Yuki’s prime research subject, and has been since her childhood. Sukuna similarly acts as Kenjaku’s champion, who he entrusted the merger to after his defeat. I argue that Yuji was created by Gege (and by extension, Kenjaku) to possess qualities of both extremes that Sukuna and Maki represent. To explain my argument, I will use Humphrey’s description of Aristotle’s natural philosophy: Aristotle claims that the matter of perceptible things has no separate existence but is always already informed by a contrary (Gen et Corr.329a25–27). The matter that traditional natural philosophy calls the “elements”—fire, water, air, and earth—already has the form of the basic contraries, hot and cold, and moist and dry, so that, for example, fire is matter with a hot and dry form (Gen et Corr.330a25–b4). Thus, even in the most basic cases, matter is always actually informed, even though the form is potentially subject to change. For example, throwing water on a fire cools and moistens it, and bringing about a new quality in the underlying material. Though, as Sukuna himself argues, the limits of jujutsu will truly be revealed by the battle, the duty, that Maki presents to him: sorcery versus the body. She effectively repels Sukuna’s power that he’s devoted his entire being to. Toji broke fate for the first time in known history and allowed Kenjaku to begin his ludicrous plan to merge all of Japan with Tengen. What will Maki break in order to end a fated cycle? How will she defy jujutsu sorcery just as Toji once did? Tengen refers to Toji breaking the cycle of six eyes users stopping Kenjaku's plan. By killing the star plasma vessel, and therefore withholding Tengen from merging with their perfect host, Toji allowed Kenjaku's plan to take shape. Ultimately, the dichotomy represented by Sukuna and Maki, the contradictory relationship between sorcery and the body, both materializes and symbolizes the nature of Gege’s power system itself; therefore, as the character who possesses qualities of both monsters, Yuji acts as Gege’s aim or essence of balance within the system. The narrator specifies the power of Sukuna’s physique as an important element, meaning both his body’s strength and its structure.* Sukuna barely budged against Rika and Yuji’s combined attacks. No matter how much the both of them punched, kicked, or even threw him, Sukuna kept his composure by maintaining Hollow Wicker Basket, and overwhelming them both with his own strength. Though, again, Sukuna represents the strongest model of jujutsu, and therefore what a sorcerer’s strength amounts to. At the other end of the Aristotelian spectrum of Gege’s power system, Maki overpowered Sukuna in a battle of strength when she threw him twice: once in Megkuna’s body, and again as Heian Sukuna. Taking Maki and Mai as a reference, one can assume Sukuna absorbed the physical and magical traits within his twin. Thus, he has two arms, and an extra mouth and set of eyes. Sukuna and Jin* may have shared Shrine as their cursed technique, which would provide another reason for Yuji obtaining it in his awakening. When Sukuna witnessed Yuji's strength after he switched to Megumi's body, Sukuna immediately realized that Yuji shared the essence of his twin. Therefore, one can assume Jin would have possessed some form of superhuman strength like Yuji does; this again references Maki and Mai, though I do not think it would have been the same Heavenly Restriction. Sukuna literally placing Yuji's own strength below Maki's, which centers Yuji between the two of the total extremes. Edit: Furthermore, Sukuna calling Yuji half-assed here references the fact that Yuji possesses the lineage from Sukuna's other half. Jin, if he were to have been a trained sorcerer, would only be capable of half of Sukuna's power. By merging Sukuna's finger alongside his twin's blood, Kenjaku has been revealed to have completed 2/3rds of Yaga's soul technique. Since birth, Yuji has been tied to Sukuna and remains the only person who can host him without immediately losing control. Even if circumstances may not demand it from him, Yuji would likely jump to the opportunity to sacrifice himself for Megumi and everyone else. I believe that, in the end, Sukuna’s enchain vow acts as a metaphorical chain linking him to Yuji. Kenjaku’s statement about Sukuna and Yuji being intertwined (the chain of curses) supports my reading of the enchain vow. The word chain produces an idea of the two of them being linked to one another. Because the enchain vow started the series of events within Shinjuku, the two of them linked by it will have to end it as well. Maki, as the antithesis of sorcery, has the power to break the link between Yuji and Sukuna. I argue that her importance within the story’s end will be to help Yuji escape Sukuna’s clutches once and for all, breaking the fate that Kenjaku has set for his creations. While Toji inadvertently aided Kenjaku in his plans, Maki will purposely stop them. The soul striking duo will take on Sukuna and finally end him. Sukuna and Yuji sharing the same body resembles Maki and Mai’s relationship: one with lots of cursed energy and power, and the other with very little. Though, Sukuna has both cursed energy and strength. The narrator specifies the power of Sukuna’s physique as an important element, meaning both his body’s strength and its structure.* Sukuna barely budged against Rika and Yuji’s combined attacks. No matter how much the both of them punched, kicked, or even threw him, Sukuna kept his composure by maintaining Hollow Wicker Basket, and overwhelming them both with his own strength. Though, again, Sukuna represents the strongest model of jujutsu, and therefore what a sorcerer’s strength amounts to. At the other end of the Aristotelian spectrum of Gege’s power system, Maki overpowered Sukuna in a battle of strength when she threw him twice: once in Megkuna’s body, and again as Heian Sukuna. Yuji possesses incredible strength, but has yet to overpower Sukuna and therefore Maki. He rests somewhere between the both of them.

I wager that Yuji’s story will end with him being connected to Sukuna. He will likely attempt to sacrifice himself to stop Sukuna, as he planned to do for Megumi anyway. Kenjaku declared that as long as Yuji and Sukuna exist, bad things will keep happening. Since birth, Yuji has been tied to Sukuna and remains the only person who can host him without immediately losing control. Even if circumstances may not demand it from him, Yuji would likely jump to the opportunity to sacrifice himself for Megumi and everyone else.
I believe that, in the end, Sukuna’s enchain vow acts as a metaphorical chain linking him to Yuji. Kenjaku’s statement about Sukuna and Yuji being intertwined (the chain of curses) supports my reading of the enchain vow. The word chain produces an idea of the two of them being linked to one another. Because the enchain vow started the series of events within Shinjuku, the two of them linked by it will have to end it as well.
Maki, as the antithesis of sorcery, has the power to break the link between Yuji and Sukuna. I argue that her importance within the story’s end will be to help Yuji escape Sukuna’s clutches once and for all, breaking the fate that Kenjaku has set for his creations. While Toji inadvertently aided Kenjaku in his plans, Maki will purposely stop them. The soul striking duo will take on Sukuna and finally end him.
While applying Aristotle’s Metaphysics to the power system within Jujutsu Kaisen, I have argued that Gege’s purposely using Sukuna, Yuji, and Maki to show a spectrum of strength. Gege uses Sukuna and Maki as the two extremes of the system’s rules, jujutsu and that which rejects it; they represent a dichotomy present throughout the story: sorcery versus the body. Yuji instead rests between the both of them and acts as Gege’s aim, or σκοπός, and exists as a literal representation of the dichotomy that Sukuna and Maki present within the power system. I argue that Maki and Yuji will work together as a soul striking duo to end Sukuna.

 | Something that's been on my mind recently is why has Gojo been confirmed dead but Yuta's potentially alive when they both got KO'd to basically the same attack? In chapter 251 Yuta is cut in half by Sukuna, breaks his domain on purpose for Maki to land the optimal sneak attack, and then goes from Rika to Ui Ui to Jujutsu High's healing squad. The only noticeable difference I could think of is that Yuta was hit by an amped dismantle and not a World Slash, as a WS requires chants, handsigns, and a direction but the dismantle that bisected Yuta only had chants and a direction. However, I don't know if that distinction really matters when both characters functionally end up in the same state lol. What's even weirder is that while Yuta's status is ambiguous, Gojo and Higuruma are confirmed dead but have also been teleported by Ui Ui. This is getting off topic but even as a Handsomekuna stan I always found people saying it was impossible for Gojo to return being close minded when the writing's kind of on the wall for it if Gege really chooses. Gojo got teleported to the healing station, he still has his head (the one thing specified over and over being necessary to kill a RCT user), and Sukuna's already underestimated Shoko's RCT in the arc where a constant theme has been Sukuna undermining modern sorcerers only for them to surprise him (ie Higuruma, Kashimo, Maki, Yuta, and even Yuji). There's even the fact that Sukuna most likely doesn't know about Gramps and Utahime who are present to boost Shoko in her revival of Gojo, Higuruma, or Yuta. Throw in a binding vow with a sacrifice for one of the six eyes and Gege could really bring back Gojo if he wants to and it wouldn't sound crazy imo. But again that's off topic. Anyhow, why is Gojo stated dead and not Yuta if they both got cut in half? |

We start the chapter with Gojo pissed, pleading Geto to tell him that this is just a figment of his imagination or a dream because he's told his students (Megumi in particular) that "when you die, you die alone."

His first concern isn't that he's dead, but that he may have unintentionally lied to Megumi about how grim dying as a sorcerer is. You put your life on the line and what awaits you is nothing but cold isolation in the end. But, this isn't true. And we will see later in the chapter that this indeed is the afterlife and not Gojo's mind playing tricks on him. After Geto's "who cares bro" he retorts that he didn’t get the chance to tell "him" (Megumi) about his father, Toji, who he may see in the afterlife.
Something people may miss here, because it’s glossed over incredibly fast with a single line, is Gojo's faith and certainty. “Oh well, I already asked Shoko to handle that.” This implies that Gojo knows that everyone, including Megumi, will survive. He had the same faith in everyone when he was locked away in the Prison Realm. He doesn’t need to reaffirm that everything will be okay. To Gojo, his faith in his comrades' capabilities is just a fact to him.
And we know that, even if Gojo doesn't come back (he will), his allies have taken a lot away from this fight. 5 minute man Yuta has seen how to use Reverse Curse Technique to restore a burnt-out Curse Technique. Mama Maki learns about barriers and barrierless Domains as someone who is an anomaly to them. Mr. Left, Right Goodnight Yuji has seen how to infuse Cursed Techniques into his fist and further delay Cursed Energy before impact with Red and Blue. Phonk Master Hakari has learned a lot about Domain conditions, from external/internal durability and size to selective targeting.
People will counter that Gojo has also left Sukuna with several things such as restoring burnt-out Curse Techniques and Judgement Cut, but I will visit this later.

People take the panels of Gojo admitting Sukuna was stronger to be uncharacteristic of him. They mock Gojo for glazing Sukuna, but Gojo has paid his respects to him several times before. He has no issue acknowledging someone's strength.

This is very important. Gojo had fun, but he was not satisfied. He regrets not being able to make Sukuna go all out. He regrets that he couldn't tell Megumi about his father. And, he regrets that Geto was not there to pat him on the back. Overall, Gojo is unsatisfied. Keep this in mind.
Now, what is considered possibly the worst part of the chapter, Nanami’s assessment of Gojo’s character.

Namami once asked Geto "why not leave it all up to Gojo?" It turns out, this question was always rhetorical. He (and the others) knew he couldn't leave it all to Gojo because to him (and the others) Gojo was in it purely to satisfy himself. Now this assessment isn’t entirely wrong. Gojo loves to fight. Just about every time his eyeglasses or blindfold comes off he starts tweaking. He can lose himself in battle and this is evident even in his most recent fight against Sukuna. It's so apparent that even the peanut gallery point this out.

However, this assessment isn’t entirely right either. Gojo’s facial expression is that of shock and disbelief. He's surprised that people view him this way. While it may be true to some degree, as Geto points out, it’s only one aspect of Gojo as a person. Gojo does care about people. He even admits that he is surrounded by people he loves in this very chapter. However, people don't see that. They don't understand Gojo as a person.

And throughout the story we see this with several different characters. It's usually brushed off as a joke, but Nanami believes Gojo to be as superficial as Mahito, Ichiji believes Gojo thinks he's worthless, and Utahime believes he's always purposefully being disrespectful.

Most people do not perceive you the way you perceive yourself, especially if they aren't very familiar with you. This is even harder for someone like Gojo because of how fundamentally different he is from the average Jujutsu sorcerer and even more so from a regular person. This isn't Gege retconning Gojo's character, it's just further proof that no one understands Gojo.
It's ironic that Gojo wields the Infinity, a technique that forever separates you from your opponent. Because that strength has always been a big part for what defines his character.

Gojo then asks Nanami how it was for him. This next part confirms a few things. One of these is that this is definitely the afterlife and not Gojo's addled mind playing tricks on him.

Nanami tells Gojo that Haibara is who assisted him in his final moments. This is something Gojo could not possibly know because Haibara came to Nanami as a ghost and Nanami is promptly killed after imparting his last words to Yuji.
The other is that Gojo is not referring to himself when he teases the Principal, questioning the statement that no Jujutsu Sorcerer dies without regrets.

I've seen people take this to mean Gojo is passing on without regrets, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Gojo has expressed plenty of regrets throughout this chapter. When Gojo teases the principal, he is referring to Nanami who chose to go South without hesitation and died without regret. The way the dialogue flows should make this obvious.

Gojo prays that this all isn't a dream. This isn't because he is choosing to pass on, but because this disproves all of the preconceived notions about life as a Jujutsu Sorcerer. That it is possible to live and die without regrets. That at the end of all the suffering you won't be alone. Living as a Jujutsu Sorcerer isn't complete and total suffering. This calls back to what Yuji's grandfather said long ago

The rest of the chapter is Sukuna explaining how he cut down Gojo, an explanation that I believe makes sense but for some reason others don't (but I won't discuss that right now, this post is already insane in length as it is). Sukuna gives Gojo his highest praise because, while he didn't force him to use the other cards in his deck, he did force him to rely on the Ten Shadows and use a technique that was not only nigh impossible to discern but to execute as well. Yes, he's gotten stronger, but Sukuna is still weakened - he no longer has Mahoraga, his Domain Expansion, and most of the Ten Shadows.
I've seen many slander Gege because of this chapter, losing faith in their work and outright claiming to drop the manga/anime. Gege did not assassinate Gojo's character. The story is not over. It's becoming increasingly clear that Gege is setting Gojo up for a comeback. While he may lie to you all and joke that he hates Gojo, it's obvious that he doesn't. Satoru Gojo is one of if not the most complex and fleshed out characters in Jujutsu Kaisen and he wouldn't take him out the box just to toss him in the grave and desecrate it in one chapter.

We start the chapter with Gojo pissed, pleading Geto to tell him that this is just a figment of his imagination or a dream because he's told his students (Megumi in particular) that "when you die, you die alone."

His first concern isn't that he's dead, but that he may have unintentionally lied to Megumi about how grim dying as a sorcerer is. You put your life on the line and what awaits you is nothing but cold isolation in the end. But, this isn't true. And we will see later in the chapter that this indeed is the afterlife and not Gojo's mind playing tricks on him. After Geto's "who cares bro" he retorts that he didn’t get the chance to tell "him" (Megumi) about his father, Toji, who he may see in the afterlife.
Something people may miss here, because it’s glossed over incredibly fast with a single line, is Gojo's faith and certainty. “Oh well, I already asked Shoko to handle that.” This implies that Gojo knows that everyone, including Megumi, will survive. He had the same faith in everyone when he was locked away in the Prison Realm. He doesn’t need to reaffirm that everything will be okay. To Gojo, his faith in his comrades' capabilities is just a fact to him.
And we know that, even if Gojo doesn't come back (he will), his allies have taken a lot away from this fight. 5 minute man Yuta has seen how to use Reverse Curse Technique to restore a burnt-out Curse Technique. Mama Maki learns about barriers and barrierless Domains as someone who is an anomaly to them. Mr. Left, Right Goodnight Yuji has seen how to infuse Cursed Techniques into his fist and further delay Cursed Energy before impact with Red and Blue. Phonk Master Hakari has learned a lot about Domain conditions, from external/internal durability and size to selective targeting.
People will counter that Gojo has also left Sukuna with several things such as restoring burnt-out Curse Techniques and Judgement Cut, but I will visit this later.
Geto then asks Gojo about Sukuna and Gojo responds that he was strong. Now, many people take these next few panels out of context. Gojo says that he's unsure that he'd win even if Sukuna didn't have the Ten Shadows.

And this is true. Hold on, put the pitchforks down. Gojo doesn't say he'd lose, only that he's unsure. Sukuna came into the fight with a game-plan. He would kill Gojo in their initial Domain Clash and if that didn't work then he'd use Mahoraga to strip away Gojo's scales and then kill him. There were a few road bumps in this game-plan, but in the long run he executed said game-plan.
Sukuna takes risky options so that he can use Mahoraga.

For those who don't know: Rika was adopted by Yoosung's uncles, which made them cousins. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I didn't take many screenshots because I don't want to see Rika's face in my gallery lol.
Her mother practically called her a demon, who would call priests to exorcise her, put the blame on Rika if her father's image was "tarnished" because of their daughter in addition to throwing it in her face that she should have adopted another child, saying it over and over again and comparing her to another possible child who was almost adopted by them. Anyway, things too heavy for a child to listen to.
Looking back on her past, you can understand her obsession with religion, cleanliness and abandonment, but that doesn't justify ANYTHING she's done in the present. Girl, look at me, your fiance protected you until the last second, not wanting your image to be tarnished for your cousin and friends! He tried to do everything to help you and Saeyoung and Saeran are the ILLEGITIMATE children of a POLITICIAN!! the SECOND highest political authority in a COUNTRY and both of them did not become bad persons. (Well, Saeran even became someone bad but because of Rika lol)
Rika practically has a very common background in religious cult leaders, probably mixed with some mental illness? I saw some theories of her having schizophrenia, to me it makes sense considering that there are several categories of schizophrenia.
