2024.05.16 18:04 kluckie13 Noob w/ Questions and Needing Build Help and Recommendations
I started out planning on just building a NAS to run Jellyfin or Plex but as I kept looking into things and remembering some things I realized what I wanted was more akin to a homelab setup. I figured this would be the best place to come for help.
Things I want to accomplish (eventually) with my homelab/network setup:
- Media Storage/Streaming server (Jellyfin or Plex)
- Network Level Ad Blocking (Pi-hole or AdGuard)
- Network Level Firewall (pfSense or OPNsense)
- Local "Cloud" backup (Nextcloud or similar)
- Remote "Workstation" (offload some workloads from my laptop)
- Other common things I'm forgetting to mention or will learn about (DHCP, DNS, VPN, downloads, etc)
Will be located in an armoire (no rack mounting) in my bedroom so noise and heat are major considerations. The armoire's doors will be left cracked open to allow for airflow while keeping pets out (might cut holes in back and/or attach case fans if it gets too hot. I generally run hot so I have fan running almost year round to give example of acceptable noise threshold.
Another note, there would only be a max number 3 +/- 1 users at a time and plan on storing media at high quality (4K, high bit rate, etc) with lossless compression, preferring FOSS codecs like FLAC and AV1.
While my ISP sucks and has a local monopoly and provides sub gig speeds over copper coax, the network gear I already have and will include already has 2.5 Gb RJ45 ports so that's the minnimum connection speed I want to maintain.
- Modem: 1*coax in 1*2.5 Gbps RJ45 out
- erro Pro 6E RouteAccess Point: 1*2.5 Gbps RJ45 1*1 Gbps RJ45
- Brother Wi-fi Printer: Wifi and USB connectivity only (want to figure out how to network it via the USB if possible and turn off the wi-fi connection)
Things I need to get:
- UPS
- Looking at CyberPower Mini Tower UPS systems but I don't know how to size it and what features I require. Live in Minnesota, USA with Xcel Energy so power is generaly pretty stable with the ocassional black/brown out that lasts no more than a minute or two to just annoy the microwave/oven clocks and my PS5. A storm will occasionally knock out power for a longer period of time in which case I'd like the homelab to power down before the UPS runs out of power. Just need the homelab, switch, modem, and routeaccess point to run on battery for those occasional short power outages. Would also like to have the coax surge protection also.
- Switch Netgate 4200?2
- Birds, 1 Stone? This is essentially a 2.5 gig (managed?) switch that is also a hardware firewall, right?
- I read that its better to run the firewall on dedicated hardware instead of in a VM (not clear on why) and since if I'm correct that this is essentially a managed switch it's more or less in line price wise with 2.5 gig managed switches and if I'm wrong unmanaged 2.5 gig switches are $100+ and building a dedicated pc for the firewall would cost about as much.
- OS Unraid Lifetime License
- Started out planning on using Fedora Server because I run Fedora on my Framework 16 and have become quite comfortable with it and Fedora is officially supported by Pi-hole. Also considered TrueNAS because I'm a fan of the FOSS philosophy but Unraid looks very polished and can implement what I want to do fairly easily.
- How well has Unraid been at honoring the perpetual licenses? Any drawbacks with deciding on going with Unraid?
- Case Silverstone CS382
- Like that it has plenty of room for expansion with robust I/O offerings including a slim ODD slot and a 5.25" bay allowing for easy media ingest and creation.
- An all metal case shouldn't be signifintly louder than any other case (save for something like a be quiet! case), correct?
- CPU AMD Ryzen 7 8700G
- Going to wait until after any Computex announcements before settling on a CPU
- Is 8 cores, 16 threads adequate for my use case
- iGPU is capable of AV1 encoding and decoding
- AMD has significantly lower TDPs than Intel
- This only supports PCIE 4.0 while others support 5.0. I read that correctly, right?
- Motherboard Gigabyte B650M Aorus Elite AX
- Going to wait until after any Computex announcements before settling on a motherboard
- Cooling
- CPU Cooler be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5
- Vastly overkill means easier and quieter cooling while ensuring greater build compatibility in the future
- Case Fans
- Add and/or upgrade to be quiet! and/or Noctua case fans
- Memory DDR5
- Should I look for DDR5 ECC memory?
- How much should I get?
- Storage
- USB Boot Drive
- Since Unraid runs entirely in RAM, does the USB speed have a major effect on performance? If not I'll probably get an adapter to run it off an internal USB 2.0 header to avoid an accidental removal.
- NVMe Cache
- How much should I get?
- Should the cache be mirrored, stripped, or pooled?
- The motherboard I'm looking at has 2 M.2 slots; one is PCIe 5.0 x4/2 and the other is PCIe 4.0 x4/2. How does mixing and matching PCIe speeds and number of lanes effect caching?
- HDDs Seagate IronWolf Pro
- Drives will be 12 TB or larger for helium drive design
- Starting with a 3 drive array with 1 drive as parity. How easy/safe/fast is Unraid when it comes to adding drives to an existing array or increasing parity?
- After how many drives should I add a 2nd parity drive?
- HDDs will be primarily reserved for read only data (i.e. media library)
- SATA SSD Team Group Vulcan Z SATA SSD 2 TB
- 2 drives, will be primarily used for frequently updated data (i.e "cloud" services and data back-ups)
- Would these be included in the HDDs' parity array?
- Add-in Cards
- GPU Gigabyte Radeon RX 7600 XT Gaming OC 16G
- Going to wait until after any Computex announcements before settling on a GPU and/or future upgrade if I go with a CPU with integrated graphics
- 2x the VRAM of my laptop's GPU
- AV1 and will be able to utilize AMD's Smart Technologies like SmartAccess Video with an AMD iGPU
- Would performance take a major hit since it would only be running on a PCIe 4.0 x8 connection?
- SATA add-in card
- PSU be quiet! Dark Power 13 850W
- Should be large enough
- 80+ Titanium rated and Cybernetics Titanium and A++ efficiency and sound ratings so it will run cool and quiet
- Accessories and Miscellaneous
Answers and feed back are very much appreciated.
I know this build will end up being expensive so I plan on buying the components piecemeal over time with the core components (CPU, motherboard, GPU) being the last components to acquire since they are the parts that see the most frequent generational improvements.
Thanks again for looking through my massive post and taking the time to respond.

Buenas tardes

2024.05.16 16:45 Stormblaster98 Remote connections works only on one device
I’m having a “cannot connect to SERVER securely” error where on remote wifi networks I can’t access my server, however on data it works fine. Now randomly my ipad was able to connect to the server but only on the website app.plex.tv, it still won’t connect using the app on my ipad. Any idea what’s going on?
My settings: Secure connections is set to “preferred”, remote access shows all greens and fully accessible remotely, port is manually forwarded on router, relay off.
My setup: running pms in a docker container on my ubuntu server. My router port forwarded 32400 to my server IP. My router is in a dmz from the ISP modem in order to avoid double NAT, ports show as open on port checker.

2024.05.16 16:31 333a333k333 Please help, wifi networks not showing
Good afternoon,
I hope you are doing well.
I have had many problems for the last couple of months as the Wifi icon keeps disappearing, and once it disappears I cannot use the internet until I restart the laptop. Once I restart, sometimes works for only a minute, and other times works for several hours.
These are the different things that I tried so far:
- Network&internet - Advanced network settings - Network reset - Run
- Get Help to troubleshoot and fix common connection problems. Right-click the network icon on the right side of the taskbar and select Diagnose network problems or open Get Help for Network & Internet
- Update Drivers - downloaded from Windows as well as from my manufacturer.
- Use old drivers
- Up to date on Windows updates
- Device Manager - update drivers/scan for hardware updates. Also, the WIFI device appears hidden when it stops working and gives two different errors depending on the time: Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer. OR This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful.
- Troubleshooter - Wifi is not connected, and it does not connect when using the troubleshooter
- Powerflush
- Restart your modem and wireless router.
- It does not let me use the "System Restore" option.
- I have also tried all the steps that appear in this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-wi-fi-connection-issues-in-windows-9424a1f7-6a3b-65a6-4d78-7f07eee84d2c
Please note that the issue happens with different wifi networks, and the main wifi network works without any issues on my other three devices. I have also noticed that this always happens especially when I suspend my laptop and open it again after being unplugged from the electricity. But it also happens many other times while working and while using the laptop always connected to the electricity.
I use W11 and my laptop is an asus tuf gaming f15 fx506he_fx506he.
Please help, I work remotely and this is killing me.
Many thanks!

2024.05.16 03:00 szencat does this NAS hardware only do storage or can i install an OS into it? (Buffalo Terastation TS RX2)
| for reference: my "home server" experience right now it's just an old asus laptop with ubuntu 1TB HHD + 512GB ssd, I used it as a trial run and to get a feel, was able to setup VPN so my friend can access the drive and connect to a small minecraft server. I can easily learn the software, but when it come to hardware it's a little bit confusing. Right now I'm ready to upgrade to a better system (while still in a budget) my main use is just small game server for my friends (minecraft, valheim, cs source, etc) and file storage (sharing files and also private data) at first I'm Planning to get a 2014 Mac Mini and four 4TB USB/Thunderbolt external drive, but this posting just came up, and it can have 4 Hard drive in it, does this thing have it's own OS? or do i need to have a separate hardware for the OS that connects to this thing? google have different answer, some site says NAS doesn't have an OS. some says NAS does came with their own OS. or I'm better off with Mac mini + External drive setup i originally planned? the thing submitted by szencat to HomeServer [link] [comments] |

Estoy recien mudado y tengo distancia y paredes entre my PC y modem.

2024.05.15 17:48 asgeorge Deploying Wix from GitHub to Azure Static Web App
I followed the Wix directions to store my web site (developed in Wix) in GitHub. I then created a Static Web App in Azure and connected my repo to Azure. Azure creates an Action in GitHub to deploy the website whenever a change is committed. But I'm getting the following error:
"Error: Could not find either 'build' or 'build:azure' node under 'scripts' in package.json. Could not find value for custom run build command using the environment variable key 'RUN_BUILD_COMMAND'.Could not find tools for building monorepos, no 'lerna.json' or 'lage.config.js' files found."

2024.05.15 17:12 HarlekinHippopotamus Gør det selv - Netværk hjælp
Hej brevkasse,

2024.05.15 14:42 10et Converting RPM to DEB using Alien. Showing error
Hi, I am trying to install Ansys Lumerical on my linux mint. I am following the instructions on Ansys website
link.
This is the error I am getting "Unpacking of 'Lumerical-2024R1-3-afe718e21a.el7.x86_64.rpm' failed at /usshare/perl5/Alien/Package/Rpm.pm line 168."
Upon googling, I found that many people have had faced this issue. Some managed to bypass it. But their installation file was for some other software. Not applicable in my case. Many tried to find the root cause, by checking the path mentioned in the error, but everything seemed fine. Here is my line 168:- $this->do("rpm2cpio '".$this->filename."' (cd $workdir; $decomp cpio --extract --make-directories --no-absolute-filenames --preserve-modification-time) 2>&1") rpm2cpio and cpio are installed in my pc Are there any alternative way to RPM to DEB conversion? My file size is 1.1 GB. Found one website but it supports only upto 200MB.

2024.05.15 09:13 Stormblaster98 Can’t connect securely over remote wifi but can on mobile data
So I’m having an issue where I’m not able to remotely connect to my pms over multiple different wifi networks. The error I get is that my connection isn’t secure. However it works fine on my mobile data so I’m not sure what the problem is.
My settings: Secure connections is set to “preferred”, remote access shows all greens and fully accessible remotely, port is manually forwarded on router
My setup: running pms in a docker container on my ubuntu server. My router port forwarded 32400 to my server IP. My router is in a dmz from the ISP modem in order to avoid double NAT, ports show as open on port checker.

2024.05.15 08:28 pbrain9999 NUC9VXQNX Pro PCIe 3.0 x4 issues
Hello all. I just started my home server experience for the first time on a NUC9VXQNX Pro. All my previous servers have been on full size machines and have never had issues with PCIe slots since they’ve all had plenty x8 or x16 slots. However, this NUC only has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots, which is a x16 and x4. In the x16 slot I’ve got an LSI 9300 running with no issues. For the x4 slot, I’ve been trying to install a dual port SFP+ nic since I do have a 10Gb network running with other equipment. Since this x4 slot has an open back and all these dual SFP+ ports come in an x8 form, I’ve read multiple posts that state it should work based on the required bandwidth.
For the life of me, I cannot get any of the nics to be recognized and I’ve tried 4 different nics at this point. First 2 cards were PCIe 3.0 x8. My 2 recent cards are PCIe 2.0 x8. Besides maybe a defective x4 slot, am I missing something else here?
Reposted from
nuc since there was no traction there. I appreciate any assistance!

2024.05.14 18:06 No_Beat_1658 Does nRF9160 DK connect to an LTE network automatically?
Hi!
I recently came across a video from Nordic Semiconductors in which the guy powers on the nRF and it connects using a cellular modem automatically. Here is the video:
Cellular made easy with nRF9160 DK (youtube.com) Is it true? I don't need to perform any configuration on nRF 9160 DK? If it's not, I'd appreciate is someone could point me toward a blog or guide. Thanks

2024.05.14 05:52 jangwao LTE modem for failover in Europe
Hello, I've got UDM-SE and we have fairly traffic and few times in non prime time I've noticed that single mode gpon optic modem from ISP just went black few times and had to been power rotated.
I'm looking to get an LTE backup modem or mobile router, but it seems out of stock for a longer period.
Can you suggest a shop where they still have in stock in Europe? I couldn't find any and US has different frequencies.
Any idea whenever will be in stock or what alternative do you recommend to take which is compatible?
Optional, I have Ubiquity gateway with SFP so I can think of taking single mode module but not sure if ISP would co-op on that?
Thanks for any hint.
Edit:
Found this D-Link but worried about power supply, best would be obvious PoE

2024.05.14 01:00 livia2lima Day 7 - The server and its services
INTRO
Today you'll install a common server application - the Apache2 web server - also known as
httpd - the "Hyper Text Transport Protocol Daemon"!
If you’re a website professional then you might do things slightly differently, but our focus with this is not on Apache itself, or the website content, but to get a better understanding of:
- application installation
- configuration files
- services
- logs
YOUR TASKS TODAY
- Install and run apache, transforming your server into a web server
INSTRUCTIONS
- Refresh your list of available packages (apps) by: sudo apt update - this takes a moment or two, but ensures that you'll be getting the latest versions.
- Install Apache from the repository with a simple: sudo apt install apache2
- Confirm that it’s running by browsing to http://[external IP of your server] - where you should see a confirmation page.
- Apache is installed as a "service" - a program that starts automatically when the server starts and keeps running whether anyone is logged in or not. Try stopping it with the command: sudo systemctl stop apache2 - check that the webpage goes dead - then re-start it with sudo systemctl start apache2 - and check its status with: systemctl status apache2.
- As with the vast majority of Linux software, configuration is controlled by files under the /etc directory - check the configuration files under /etc/apache2 especially /etc/apache2/apache2.conf - you can use less to simply view them, or the vim editor to view and edit as you wish.
- In /etc/apache2/apache2.conf there's the line with the text: "IncludeOptional conf-enabled/*.conf". This tells Apache that the *.conf files in the subdirectory conf-enabled should be merged in with those from /etc/apache2/apache2.conf at load. This approach of lots of small specific config files is common.
- If you're familiar with configuring web servers, then go crazy, setup some virtual hosts, or add in some mods etc.
- The location of the default webpage is defined by the DocumentRoot parameter in the file /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.conf.
- Use less or vim to view the code of the default page - normally at /vawww/html/index.html. This uses fairly complex modern web design - so you might like to browse to http://165.227.92.20/sample where you'll see a much simpler page. Use View Source in your browser to see the code of this, copy it, and then, in your ssh session sudo vim /vawww/html/index.html to first delete the existing content, then paste in this simple example - and then edit to your own taste. View the result with your workstation browser by again going to http://[external IP of your server]
- As with most Linux services, Apache keeps its logs under the /valog directory - look at the logs in /valog/apache2 - in the access.log file you should be able to see your session from when you browsed to the test page. Notice that there's an overwhelming amount of detail - this is typical, but in a later lesson you'll learn how to filter out just what you want. Notice the error.log file too - hopefully this one will be empty!
Note for AWS/Azure/GCP users
Don't forget to add port 80 to your instance security group to allow inbound traffic to your server.
POSTING YOUR PROGRESS
Practice your text-editing skills, and allow your "classmates" to judge your progress by editing /vawww/html/index.html with vim and posting the URL to access it to the forum. (It doesn’t have to be pretty!)
SECURITY
- As the sysadmin of this server, responsible for its security, you need to be very aware that you've now increased the "attack surface" of your server. In addition to ssh on port 22, you are now also exposing the apache2 code on port 80. Over time the logs may reveal access from a wide range of visiting search engines, and attackers - and that’s perfectly normal.
- If you run the commands: sudo apt update, then sudo apt upgrade, and accept the suggested upgrades, then you'll have all the latest security updates, and be secure enough for a test environment - but you should re-run this regularly.
