2024.05.16 02:51 WestsideTy Niche Review Dump

Hi Everyone! I’ve always loved good smelling stuff and for the last 15 years I’ve usually had one bottle of cologne, and would replace once it’s out. Only in the last few months have I really delved into this world and began filling out a modest collection. I’m definitely not an expert (so take my reviews with a big grain of salt) but I love smelling and writing so here ya go. (Fucking wall of text incoming lmao, I didn’t realize how lengthy this got)
I just got back from a three-hour mall trip to try and get my nose on as many niche fragrances as my senses would tolerate. I had already done a good bit of research so I had some picked out to try and others already crossed-off. Im a 30M for reference.
I also had the goal in mind to find a contender for a fall/winter scent that exudes class, sophistication and decadence. For that, I’ve already tried a few that I really enjoy, and kind of used these as a springboard to continue exploring:
Xerjoff Alexandria II- This is what I envision royalty wearing. Lavender and rosewood mix soooo nice in the open, and dries into a lovey rose/vanilla/essence of oud. The oud is really toned down here for those that dislike it. It’s kind of hard to pick out. Nuclear performance.
Initio Oud for Greatness- Another good starter oud, you could say (this was my introduction to oud). It lasts forever and the dry down is seriously heavenly. The wet, soily oud is at the forefront for 2-4 hours, but I’m absolutely in love with what’s left when it disappears. Lavender, saffron, nutmeg and musk mixes into the best dryer-sheet-like scent I’ve come across (what it reminds ME of at least).
Perfums de Marly Haltane- Quite similar in the opening to Oud for Greatness. Haltane is darker, though, where I get more leathesmoke. I think the oud in this is more subdued, or at least less moist smelling. It blends well and lasts a good while.
Initio Atomic Rose- Holy shit. Apparently rose gets my motor GOING. I tried a lot of rose-centric fragrances today, but this probably still takes the cake for its balance and strength, in addition to the scent itself being just gorgeous.
So with those in mind I was off to Neiman Marcus. I sampled a large amount more than what I’ve written, but stuck to the ones that were memorable; good or bad.
Frederic Malle - Portrait of a Lady- My favorite of the Frederic Malle. Sensual rose/clove/currant at the front, but it is kind of hard to pick out specific notes on this one. After looking, I can get the cinnamon in the background of the dry down, it blends perfectly with the sandalwood, rose and benzoin after drying down. - Carnal Flower- Some similarity to POAL, lots of tuberose and jasmine, which I personally like. A bright yet sensual floral, and you get some coconut and melon there, too. I typically dislike coconut but this is blended masterfully. - Lipstick Rose- Yeah, that’s what it smells like. Try this if you’ve seen people describe scents as lipstick-y or violet taking on that accord. Not my cup of tea, also leans more feminine to my nose than the other two. - Musc Ravageur- I really wanted to like this one. And for a split second I did! A clove-y vanilla sasparilla is what I first got, and it unfortunately turned into barnyard urine. I immediately remembered seeing some reviews stating this, and I couldn’t get my nose to move past it. I can tell there’s good stuff there, but not for me.
Amouage - Reflection- The only one I’d tried before, and remains one of my favs. Rosemary and pink pepper greet you with a deep, fresh spice. The vetiver and patchouli sit nicely at the bottom, and the combination of white florals mixes wonderfully. Another scent I could imagine on royalty, and seems pretty versatile, too. You could wear this year-round without feeling out of place. Insane staying power. - Lyric- Probably my favorite, but I need to smell again on another day. Compared to the other Amouage, I had to continually stick my nose in the coffe beans to pick up the scent from the test strip. When I did get it, it was a lovely light, fresh scent. Quite a departure from the other Amouage I’ve tried, but great. No surprise, the list of notes are some of my favorites: lime, bergamot, rose, orange blossom, saffron, nutmeg, musk, pine, vanilla, incense, sandalwood. Seriously, love each and all those individually and they come together beautifully. - Interlude- Another good one. Dark, mysterious. Definitely get the oregano/peppepatchouli/incense bomb off the top. Leather lurking behind. I typically don’t gravitate toward the leathery scents but this one’s good. - Enclave- This pretty much seals the deal for me that on me, mint just ain’t it. I liked Sedley at first, but the mint somehow gets too cloying to my nose after too long. I can tell I would get the same from the peppermint in the opening of Enclave. I almost liked this one, too. If you can even tolerate peppermint, you’ll enjoy this one.
Mind Games - Blockade- Wowww. First sniff love, here. Explosion of citrus, juicy fruit-y sex. I usually find myself staying away from citrus but this shit is next level. This will be a contender for my next upscale summer buy. - Double Attack- Another love at first sniff. It’s familiar, though. Chocolate/orange/cinnamon/vanilla. You’ll want to eat it right up. I already have this box checked in my collection, but may come back to it in the future. - Checkmate- Another lovely scent. Champagne, red currant, rose, magnolia, little patchouli. It all comes together really nicely, and it was difficult for me to pick out specific notes before looking. Not a love, but I was really impressed with the quality and scent profile of the Mind Games I tried.
Clive Christian - Town & Country- Wow. No seriously, like fucking wow. Smells like an Italian fruit cart strolling through an English manor’s sprawling garden road. I look at the notes and I don’t understand how you get this smell supposedly out of Clary Sage, Ambergris, and Sandalwood. Like, what? This is high quality shit. I get some pear or grapes there, too. Try this. - Crab Apple Blossom- Yum yum yum this is goooood. Smells like it sounds. Bergamot, apple blossom and rhubarb dance around playfully together. Can’t help but have a big stupid smile on your face when you smell this. The more it dried down, the more it might be my favorite over Town & Country. - Matsukita- Another great scent. In the same vein as the other two since they are part of the same “Crown Collection.” You get some smokiness, here. Bergamot with nutmeg and mate give depth and a little mystery. White florals, woody ambers and musk at the base. Just quality stuff here. All three of these in the Crown Collection were available in 10ml travel size gift pack for $300. Good idea to put on my wish list. That shit is kiiiinda expensive.
Xerjoff - Erba Pura- I did not expect to like this as much as I did! Favorite that I sampled. Perfect combination of citrus and fruitiness off the top, layered over a bed of sweet musk. Something here is very familiar to my nose but I couldn’t place it. This will be another top contender for a future upscale summer purchase. - Accento- Soothing scent. Fruity white floral (usually dumb reach for me), and the iris gives it some powder but not overpowering. Not as feminine-leaning as I would have expected. - Iommi- Delicious! Sweet smoky rum off the top, and it’s a little surprising how forward the patchouli and leather is in this. It’s bordering on being a little overpowering, but it tames a bit on the dry down. I’d need to see how this goes on my skin, for sure. - Torino 21- Another one that I liked way more than expected. I’m going back and seeing mint listed as a top note here…I didn’t get that! And thank God since mint usually is a non-starter. Kind of an aquatic green to my nose. Again, just a lovely scent. - Naxos- Yeah ok this is good shit. I was expecting a sweet bomb, but this is definitely more restrained than what a lot of reviewers will have you believe. I’m a sucker for lavender and bergamot. Throw in honey and jasmine atop a bed of tobacco, vanilla and tonka bean? Yes please. - Erba Gold- Pretty good. To my nose more feminine than Erba Pura, likely due to the extra fruits in the middle. That combination of citruses, pear and melon is reminiscent of particular ladies’ scents.
Louis Vuitton - L’Immensité- Ohhhh yeahh. Relaxation in a bottle. My favorite besides maybe Fleur du Desert. This, Imagination and Météore all kind of dance to the same song, so to speak. More than one of these would be redundant, in my opinion. The quality speaks through each of these fragrances, though- really nice stuff. - Imagination- The name fits, as a lot of the notes here are almost fleeting like a word on the tip of your tongue. It’s a great, calming scent but it didn’t blow me away. Like I said, L’Immensité was the best of these and I don’t see the need to diversify within this collection. - Météore- Compared to L’Immensité, there’s a little more sweetness here. This leans closer to a shower gel-like scent in my opinion. Still great. - Fleur du Désert- This one started out reallly good. Honey and cinnamon into rose and orange blossom is an intriguing, sensual combination. Unfortunately, smelling it on my arm after a couple hours, the jasmine and honey turn into something my mind recognizes as an old lady scent. The POAL on my hand, by comparison, keeps mixing with my skin in a great pheromonic way. - Ombre Nomad- Disappointed with this one. I’m realizing I don’t gravitate toward darker scents like heavy oud, leather, incense. I can tell it’s put together really well and uses quality materials, but this isn’t one that was made for me.
All in all, my main take-aways include: Xerjoff scents living up to the name. I was definitely impressed with their offerings, and would have expected it to lean closer to overrated. Same with Mind Games. Really enjoyed everything I sampled from them, even if it wasn’t my cup of tea, I was impressed with the quality. Also, I need to get back and sample the rest of the Clive Christian house. I was absolutely blown away with what I tried.
A little bonus: I tried TF Noir de Noir, Extreme Noir, and Cafe Rose. Extreme Noir is excellent. A regal mix of saffron, nutmeg and cardamom on top of rose and white florals. Ahhhh, again, similar to what I imagine a king or king to smell like.
Cafe Rose is probably the second best rose-centric scent to my nose besides Atomic Rose. I’ll need to put those side by side.
Anyway, feel free to ask away if you’d like. I was bored and inspired so killed some time writing this out :)

2024.05.16 02:34 nerdKween Shrimp and grits - 9 points

Shrimp and grits - 9 points
So I did some calculations for one of my favorite comfort dishes and found out it's a really filling 9 point meal. It will be about 4 points if you don't make it as decadent as I did (so make them with water and no cheese), but here's my recipe:
For the grits:
  • 1/4 cup dry old fashioned grits
  • 1 cup of unsweetened plain oatmilk
  • 1 oz goat cheese crumbles
  • garlic powder
  • jalapeño salt (note: Jalapeño Salt is a bit of a niche product, so if you can't find it, you can sub out the JS and the garlic powder with garlic salt and a touch of cayenne)
For the shrimp:
  • diced bell pepper
  • grape tomatoes, sliced
  • diced portabella mushrooms
  • shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • greens (spinach, kale, etc... I used mixed greens because it's what I had on hand)
  • nonstick cooking spray
  • jalapeño salt (see above note)
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • chili powder
Directions:
Prepare the grits as the package states, but replace the water with oat milk (so boil the oatmilk, stir in the grits, let simmer until thick). After adding the grits to the milk, add your seasonings and stir. Cook until thick. When done, turn off the heat, add the goat cheese and stir, then plate it.
Now take a nonstick pan and give it a quick spray with your cooking spray. Then add your mushrooms and bell peppers. If your shrimp is frozen, add it now.
If your shrimp isn't frozen, add it after the peppers and mushrooms have softened, and also add the tomatoes and the greens. Give it a stir, then add your seasonings. When the shrimp is fully cooked, add it on top of your grits.
Here's a picture of mine (I got hungry so I stirred it and started eating before I thought to snag a picture to share). Definitely a great way to spend points without tapping into your weeklies.

2024.05.16 02:26 frijolita_bonita Do the ratios for this recipe seem ok?

As taken from Paul Prudhommes book,
Lori Taylor’s Chocolate Chippers ¼ pound (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened ¾ cup, packed, light brown sugar 1 egg 2 tablespoons vanilla extract ¾ cup coarsely chopped dates 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking powder ½ cup grated coconut ½ cup granola ¾ cup coarsely chopped walnuts 1¾ cups semisweet chocolate chips
I question because when I went online to find reviews (and found none), the one on his website differs a bit. There were copies of this version above on a few recipe sites.

2024.05.16 01:35 TheShortOneThere AITA for being untrusting and strict with my Drug addict husband, or am I being harsh as he is trying to improve?

edit to fix an auto corect.
Useing alt account so husband wont see.For a bit he and I both where addicts. It started with ketamine then to crack. Even still continued to use while homeless as a way to cope. Got into a new apartment with the help of my mother in law. Over time I saw and felt I he was prioritizing getting drugs over groceries. He caused him to get paranoid and set up basic alarms near the door into our apartment. (Cans by the door) because he thought our downstairs neighbor was trying to get in. It greatly negatively effected our relationship. I no longer felt sexual feelings to him. As well as very nearly fully falling out of love with him.
I tried to voice this but felt blown off. I stopped using and now have a erotic modeling (with soft core porn) he knows about this and has ok'd it. Even though we haven't been physical for coming up on a year now. He's now trying to stop getting crack and lowering to occasionally using coke (and pot but thats whatever). He had tossed out his pipes. He had agreed that if he's going to do it he'll crush it up and add it to a cigarette to smoke outside. A few weeks after he tossed his pipes out. I enter his room to ask him something to see him with a pipe to his mouth. I got upset with him. He claims he still smokes it outside but he was trying to make sure the chore was completely set up. He did allow me to throw that out.
He did get a little pissy when I got back from my second shoot because I wasn't affectionate with him when getting back. So much so that early the two mornings after he wanted to use $20 of what I earned on some crack. I annoyedly gave him the 20. It was early I didn't feel like getting I to it. Though he knew I wasn't happy about it. Apon getting back he talked abit and said he'd cut out crack all together if it would help us rebuild our relationship. Even though he liked "getting fuckws up" with me.
He is concerned about losing me to the guy I do the modeling and soft core with. I do admit personality wise there is a connection. Physically he isn't quite my type. He's interested in me and If thinks can't be patched with my husband. There might be something there.
Today he went out to get pot came back to reveal he got me some coconut milk I really like from the one store. So I went to his room to thank him for the coconut milk. As I opened the door I see him quickly shove something in his pockets. At first he tried just tried to show me his lighter. I asked about the other pocket. He showed me his snooter which is a converted mini pipe. One: he orginaly said he was just getting pot, this made him admit he got $5 in pot and $5 in coke. I wanted to see his scooter to make sure it actually wasn't still a pipe. He got pissy about this but relented (it was just a snooter after all) but has been pissy that I'm not about to blindly trust an addict.

2024.05.16 01:11 thegeekdom Is my routine okay?

So, for most of my life (39yM) I showered every day or two (at night), very quickly (often about 5 minutes) and used the 2 in 1 (sometimes even 3 in 1) with a bar soap. I used spray deodorant and that's about it. Recently, I've begun to start looking into trying to smell nicer (not that I smelled bad before, but I didn't smell amazing) and feel cleaner.
My current routine is now morning showers. I am using dr. squatch shampoo (coconut castaway). I lather and scrub it in, and then leave it for a minute. I then wash it out completely and then apply the accompanying conditioner (also dr. squatch coconut castaway) and do the same, but this I leave in a little longer (maybe 3-5 minutes). While I let my conditioner sit, I begin washing my body. I'm currently using a body wash (old spice mamba king) that I'm applying onto a loofah so it lathers up well. I scrub pretty well and make sure to hit every spot (especially the hot spots of underarms and groin). By the time I've gotten everywhere lathered up, I begin to rinse out the conditioner and then going down I wash off the body wash. After the shower I don't apply deodorant right away. I dry off and after about 15 minutes have passed (right before I leave for work) I apply deodorant. I use an antiperspirant (old spice volcano, a white chalk deodorant), and I apply a ball deodorant (manscaped crop preserver). Then I brush my teeth (making sure to scrub my tongue) and walk out the door.
I do this every day except that I don't shampoo back to back. I typically shampoo every other day, but I do use conditioner every day. Is there anything I'm missing in my routine? I've heard arguments for showering in the morning (washing off sweat of the night before), but also for showering at night (going to bed clean). Do I really need to shower twice a day? Maybe just a nighttime rinse off then? I don't often use cologne either. Maybe for more special occasions like a date or wedding etc. I currently use acqua di gio giorgio armani. I've also heard I'm not supposed to apply deodorant (or antiperspirant) until you're completely dry, but that seems unreasonable as I have to leave for work. Do I need to keep a stick in my car then? Is white chalk deodorant that I'm using fine? I know they can stain shirts, but I find that antiperspirant only ever comes with white chalk sticks and I smell with just deodorant. I've also heard a lot about aluminum free recently. Is that more of a "explore if you have a problem with your smell" type thing? Basically, anything I'm missing or doing wrong, or advice is appreciated. Just trying to do better I guess, as I've found that this isn't really taught outside of just shower and you're fine.

2024.05.16 00:41 daveishere7 Let me know would any of these foods cause a histamine reaction?

I already deal with a bunch of other gut stuff like candida, possibly diverticulitis (gotta get that checked) and now what seems like a hiatal hernia. But although I've altered my diet overtime, I still deal with things like getting dandruff under my eyebrows and mustache.
The other day I broke out from applying unrefined coconut oil on my face. Even tho I'm okay with eating it and using it in my hair. The foods I eat nowadays tho are skinless chicken, ground chicken, ground turkey, green beans, cooked collard greens, cooked kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kidney, pinto & garbanzo beans, green peas, eggs, brown rice, brown rice cakes, sunflower butter (no sugar), olive oil, coconut oil, white pepper, nutritional yeast, salt. Also cheddar cheese and blueberries but I'm probably about to cut those out.

2024.05.16 00:39 isometrixk Walmart Exclusive 36" w/Air Fryers - First cook & initial thoughts

Walmart Exclusive 36

Yesterday I received my Walmart 36" Blackstone with 2 Air Fryers & 1 Warmer. Today, I seasoned it made air-fried buffalo wings and (frozen) sweet potato fries! Here are my thoughts.
Unboxing & Setup
Box is heavy. Unboxing was straight forward but you want it delivered where you plan to place it or where you can roll it to - it's a heavy box. The instructions were easy with some misprints but I was able to piece it together myself in 45 minutes. The hardest part was screwing in the lid - definitely get a person to hold it for you because it is an awkward step.
First Seasoning
After a lot of research I kept it simple - quick wipe with water & small dish soap, then wiped several times with damp cloths. Turned the heat to MAX and applied a thin coat of olive oil with tongs and paper towel. I made sure I wiped in different motions to get full, even, thin coverage. Waited for the smoke to slow down, then applied another thin coat of oil. I did this step 3 times. After the 3rd time, I turned off the burners and waited for it to cool down before wiping another thin layer of olive oil.
https://preview.redd.it/cmqvd8gs3o0d1.jpg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7afd4fd44457b3a99e1f07428a773bb05b5a09d
Quick Pros/Cons
Air Fryers worked great - surprised how well they evenly cook tops and bottoms without flipping. Griddle seemed to season pretty evenly. Warmer basket was pointless for my fries.
Purchase Background
So why this unit? The air fryers. I did not use the griddle yet, only the air fryers for the first time today. Wednesdays the wife and I go out for wings but the only restaurant nearby with good wings is inconsistent. I bought this particular air fryer because on most days we have 3 hungry boys with us (17, 13, 4). We are all particular about our wings - crispy yet saucey! I thought it would be convenient to have a single place where I can cook a variety of foods and textures with minimum pots.
But I wanted to make sure I could make wings - good wings. Crispy, juicy wings...and I did.
Wing Recipe
https://preview.redd.it/3h1yp1x04o0d1.jpg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2fa062ce07dc32b215aea25bee03e099d4dd877
Shout out to CookingWithDoug for his video that convinced me this unit will crispy wings. Specifically this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Aegs-jTomQ We also wanted to ensure we could replicate the restaurant's buffalo sauce we'd come to love....which turns out just Franks Red Hot and a little Ranch Dressing mixed lol. (I stumbled on this by accident and it's delicious - definitely the same taste as the local restaurant we like our wings from most)
After some research I combined what I think (at this time) is the best combination for this unit:
  1. I bought bagged, frozen wings. I patted them dry with paper towels and let them sit for 24 hours open in the fridge to dry out on paper towels.
  2. Take out the wings to get to room temp an hour before cooking them.
  3. At this time, I set the air-fryers to HIGH. Gently sprayed them with cooking oil, and split a frozen bag of sweet potato fries between them.
  4. After about 28 minutes, the fries were done. I moved them to the warming basket. This basket remained cool the entire time. I'm not sure if the griddle needs to be on to keep it warm, but the air fryer fires were doing nothing for this drawer.
  5. At this time, I gently seasoned the wings with salt/pepper. Then gently coated them with 50/50 baking powdecorn starch. I placed them in the air friers and gently sprayed them with olive oil.
  6. Placed the chicken back in the air fryers still on HIGH for 18-20 minutes.
  7. Took wings out and flipped them. Gently sprayed oil on any wing that looked dry.
  8. Placed the chicken back in for 5-8 minutes on HIGH until the skins looked evenly browned. (My wings were slightly overcooked as the insides were 200 deg but still delicious!)
  9. Tossed wings in Franks Red Hot mixed with a little Ranch Dressing.
Wings came out slightly overcooked (because they were smaller) but still DELICIOUS. I mean - crispy, hot, and saucey! Exactly what we wanted! I could hear the crunch as my wife took bites across the table. The fries kept in the warmer didn't even stay warm - they were a little cool while I cooked the wings and served them.

This is all I can think of for this write up but I'd be happy to answer questions I might have missed.

Found on HBO Max S29 E3, all vegan challenges in this one.
Vegans:
Plant-based:
Vegetarians
Both Mark and Bobby mention that they're investers in vegan businesses. We learn that Bobby's girlfriend is vegetarian which has influenced his cooking and also that Bobby trademarked "Crunchify"....
The étouffée looked so good, though I was a bit wary when they poured the entire can of coconut milk in :D
The final challenge of a vegan burger was interesting since it forced bobby to have to give structure to something vegan. He mentions there's a successful veggie burger on his restaurants menu so he'll adapt that and he even uses flax, so it's great to see Bobby actually has that stuff in his mind. I do find it weak that he leans on premade vegan cheese a lot where the challengers make their own stuff.
The challenger does a lot of interesting stuff with different flours that I'd love to have learned more about.

I liked my curls today. Also, wolfcut soon?
I have a hair cut appointment this weekend. Wanting to add more layers in. Considering a wolfcut…would it work?
My routine: Shampoo twice a week with Purezero Coconut Milk Moisturizing Shampoo (once a month with a dime sized amount of Differin Body Scrub with Salicylic Acid- used yesterday ✨) Followed up with Purezero Coconut Milk Conditioner (I let this sit in my hair for about five minutes before rinsing with cool water)
I style my hair while’s it’s damp with a few pumps of Purezero Coconut 10-in-1 Leave in Spray and a quarter sized amount SGX NYC Hair IQ.
In the shower I use a Denman D17 Curl Volumizer to actually detangle my hair. I just like the way I can handle it better than a bigger wide tooth comb. And to style, I use a Denman D3 7 Row Styling Brush. Then I let my hair air dry. To sleep, I pineapple it in a satin scrunchie then up into a satin lined beanie.
This morning I did my usual take where I gently shake out my curls with a really thin coat of oil in my palms using prayer hands. And that’s about it.

2024.05.15 23:25 shard_of_narsil Products? Recipes? Need moisture, fragrance free products.

My family is horribly allergic to fragrance. All the products that work for me they're allergic to. Divorce? jk.
Anyway, I need suggestions/recipes/help for my coarse, low porosity 3b/c curly hair. I've been getting split ends. I rarely heat style my hair. My hair likes heavy leave-in creams, like the Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Hair Mask & Leave-In Conditioner (pink jar), paired with the Tresemme Megacontrol gel (#5). I use coconut oil on the hair ends before washing my hair. I use a basic clarifying shampoo a few times a month (Paul Mitchell Shampoo 2), H&S dandruff shampoo on my scalp, and the Vanicream fragrance free conditioner (just started, I'm meh about it, but I think leave-in products make more of a difference for me). I probably have hard water but I think the clarifying shampoo should handle it somewhat (it's got EDTA and other chelating agents).
What fragrance-free leave-in products help you with styling, dry ends, prevent split ends? Thanks!

Cinnamon, elachi, clove (usually pestle and mortar tho dhanchutha, but pic kosam cheyyaledhu and ginger konchem water lo (around 25% water compared to 100% milk) rolling boil varaku maraganivvandi.
Now add respective sugar and let it boil again (we use coconut sugar, andhuke brown ga undhi).
Then add milk and bring it to boil again. Add enough tea powder.
While mixing once in a while, let the milk rise and fall a few times by adjusting the heat. After 2 or 3 times, strain it and enjoy.

2024.05.15 22:04 Whocanitbe_ Mango and coconut

Mango and coconut
Creami newbie here. Made a few protein ice creams, but thought I’d try something different and this one has been my favourite. I blended a can of coconut milk and some frozen mango. Simple and delicious!

2024.05.15 22:02 Aggravating-Drawer39 dense cake!

hello all,
i'm a bit of a novice when it comes to baking, but i like surprising people i love with cakes (though i have only done it a few times).
today'a attempt was a rose water olive oil cake, following this recipe:
dry ingredients: - 270 g flour - 150 g sugar - pinch of salt - 3 teaspoons baking powder
wet ingredients: - 195 ml soy milk - 90 ml olive oil - 1 tablespoon rose water
i mixed the wet and dry ingredients separately and let them sit for 10 minutes, then i combined the two by adding wet to dry. i baked the cake in the oven on 180°C for ~40 minutes.
all seemed well but when i tasted it, (after patting myself on the back for not overdoing the rose water) was hit with the fact that the cake was super dense.
based on the description, could anyone give a diagnosis?? id love to retry this to make it better for when i can actually give it to my loved one.
thank you for your help and enjoy the rest of your week!!

2024.05.15 21:57 goatercycles Flavor suggestions and what to avoid

Hey all just looking for some suggestions on flavors for the next bogo (whenever that is). I’m 2 for 2 right now, loved hype sauce and sage mode, hated miami nights and blue bomber slushie.
Miami nights was just too much coconut for me. Even watered down I wasn’t a fan. Blue bomber it was the creamy(?) taste it had. Might be good in milk.
I really like sour drinks so i’ve got my eye on pretty much all the sours right now.

2024.05.15 21:55 rashyandtrashy Anyone out there think coconut derivatives are their nemesis?

I have been trying to figure out what flares up my skin for years, or why some times didn’t have flares…and I think I might have issues with coconut oil or coconut oil derivatives in products. I recently changed to an olive oil soap from one with very few ingredients that included saponified coconut oil, and a rash I’ve had on my neck for eight months disappeared. I know true coconut oil allergies are extremely rare, but I wonder if this is an irritant for me that I’m just in CONSTANT contact with. Coconut derivatives are everywhere and have SO many names!
Please share your thoughts and experiences! :)

2024.05.15 21:07 ApprehensiveHead1444 Wylde Ivy 10 Sampler Review

Ranking system:
5 - full size bottle already in my cart 4 - really enjoy it 3 - wouldn't buy again but might use up 2 - Could try one more time before giving away 1 - scrubbed and giving away
Super fast shipping, beautifully packaged, and a free sample ( Lost Lenore).
Surf Girl - (Notes of pink grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, lychee, and cantaloupe with a touch of jungle greens and white tea leaves all on a bed of vanilla infused coconut milk and dusted with a light sugar musk.)
2 - A nice smell but 100% smells like whatever my grandma used to weause for soap. Very powder forward on me
Blackberry Lace - (Fresh and sweet, with just a touch of mystique. Vanilla and rum soaked blackberries with sweet pineapple chunks, delicate jasmine petals, dewy strawberry leaves, crisp apple peel, and wrapped in airy tendrils of white musk and soft amber.)
2 - Horribly saddened that for some reason it smells like mineral sunscreen on me.
The Moon Never Beams - (Notes of split vanilla beans, tonka infused cream, vanilla sugar musk, and just a whisper of vanilla orchids.)
2 - A pretty delicate powdery vanilla
Candied Orchid - (Sweet candied lemon peels nestled around sugared dipped vanilla orchids in a wash of fresh coconut milk and whipped vanilla cream topped with a kiss of spun sugar musk.)
2 - A sweet powdery floral
Violets & Cream - (Simple, beautiful, elegant and oh so delicious; candied violets and rich mounds of homemade marshmallow fluff and fresh sweet cream.)
2 - Four words: Choward's Violet Mint Candy
Kisses Like Candy - (Simple, sweet pink cotton candy kissed with a touch of pink magnolia, mandarin peel, soft amber, night blooming jasmine, pomegranate, heliotrope, and sugar musk.)
3 - Like you're taking a bubble bath while eating cotton candy. Really enjoy the dry down.
All the Ways - (Sweet and unassuming, a beautiful skin musk fragrance that is both comforting and alluring. Rice flowers, pink amber, fresh Asian plum, a touch of sweet coconut water, miniature violets, blackberry juice, and sheer vanilla musk.)
2 - Powdery soap.
☺️The Way You Blush - (Sweet and all innocence. Cotton candy, sweet vanilla infused sugar, crystalized bergamot, and candied violets)
5 - A LOVELY scent. It smells more sophisticated than what I had expected based off the description. I'm getting lots of tantalizing sweetness with a nice touch of bergamot to balance it out.
🎀Pink Petal Sugarcubes - (Notes of fresh cut peonies and tulips, wild honeysuckle branches, candied tangerine, glistening sugar cubes, raspberry syrup, and whipped vanilla.)
5 - It has what I'm coming to realize is Wylde Ivy's signature powdery scent. However, that's in the background for me. This description is not going to give it justice but: a watermelon jollyrancher with the coquette aesthetic. I said what I said and will not be elaborating.
🌹Lost Lenore - (Notes of dewy pink roses, faded parchment, ambergris, dried heather flowers, and white amber sugar)
5 - Never would have picked this one on my own but mannn do I love it! I realized that it was very close to something I'd worn in the past. It's Delina La Rosse by PDM! I wore them on opposite wrists and they smell like sisters (one preppy and one goth). To my nose they share the same rose heart note but Lost Lenore is more musky and dare I say complex.
In conclusion a lot of misses for me (3/10) but the ones I liked, I really enjoyed! There is something about certain notes pared with the powdery scents that are too nostalgic and bittersweet for me to get on board with. Unfortunately, I haven't pinned down exactly what notes it is lol. All in all I will be purchasing more from Wylde Ivy again. What I didn't like I know another person who enjoys powders will love.

2024.05.15 20:25 madmonster444 Chef kinda fucked up my dish. How do I approach this?

Chef kinda fucked up my dish. How do I approach this?
So I’ve been working at this place for a bit less than 3 years now. It’s my first kitchen job and I’m happy that he gave me the opportunity to create a couple of dishes that are going on the menu starting today. This one is a banana crème brûlée. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out, with the banana and vanilla flavours being nicely balanced.
It needed some sort of garnish though, and I didn’t really have many ideas. I said maybe a couple raspberries and a mint sprig. He kept working on it in the mornings when I’m not at work, and came up with a coconut tuille (which I think compliments it nicely), and macerated diced strawberries in strawberry coulis. The strawberries are distracting and don’t compliment the base of the dessert. They’re bold and bright, and you can’t really taste the more subtle banana and vanilla flavours past the strawberries.
So it’s kind of a kick to the balls that the recipe I came up with and developed to much acclaim from my fellow cooks has been modified into something I’m not happy with. Do I say something to chef? Ultimately it’s his and management’s decision how the dish goes out, but do I get some say in the matter being that I created it? I just need some perspective and for someone to tell me if I’m letting my ego get in the way, or if I have a right to be miffed about this.
