2024.05.16 12:49 BelfastBodyBuilder Michelle O'Neill 'making a pig's ear of this', say DUP WhatsApps

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-69017289
More than 60 pages of WhatsApp messages between Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) ministers have been published by the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.
The messages give an insight into the thoughts of some of the party's most senior figures as the pandemic spread.
The WhatsApp group chat covers the period between January and November 2020.
No internal messages between Sinn Féin politicians have been published by the inquiry.
Michelle O'Neill, whose WhatsApp messages from this period were wiped from the devices issued to her as deputy first minister, has told the inquiry that she accepts that these messages should not have been deleted.
"I accept that I should have kept my additional exchanges, in particular with Arlene [Foster], and anything else that was relevant," she said.
But DUP politicians' messages have been published and they are often candid. They include jibes at ministers from other parties in Stormont's executive.
On 17 January, six days after the executive was restored following a three-year-hiatus, a person whose name has been redacted by the inquiry wrote: "SF [Sinn Féin] doesn't seem to have matured at all!"
Emma Little-Pengelly, who was then a DUP special adviser and is now deputy first minister, replied with apparent sarcasm.
"Well, why not - let English taxpayers subsidise our free prescriptions, lower rates, no water charges, lower tuition fees and free prescriptions.. but hey, how dare you guys starve us of funding #Perfidious Albion," she wrote.
'Catholic church hasn't the best track record' Lord Weir, who was education minister at the time, commented on 13 March about the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland writing to him to call for schools to be closed.
The DUP minister said of the Archbishop of Armagh, Eamon Martin: "Wasn't aware of his qualifications in virology."
A person whose name has been redacted replied: "Write back and tell him we don't live in the South [Republic of Ireland] and that his institution hasn't the best track record of looking out for the welfare of kids."
On 14 March, there was criticism of Sinn Féin deputy leader Michelle O'Neill, who was deputy first minister at that time, after she broke ranks with the executive to call for school closures.
Edwin Poots, the DUP agriculture minister at the time, acknowledged that schools would have to close at some point, but said the "response needs to be measured and reassuring".
On 17 March, as the pandemic became more acute, Mrs Little-Pengelly proposed a "four-nations press conference" with the prime minister.

"All devolved regions with PM on televised conference to reassure people," she wrote.
Mrs Little-Pengelly said the public "need to see leaders speaking", adding that "any confusion compounds panic".
Naomi Long 'hard to listen to' Some messages point towards tensions between executive ministers during meetings to discuss the pandemic.
There were several jibes at Justice Minister Naomi Long, leader of the Alliance Party.
On 7 May, Lord Weir said Mrs Long was "hard to listen to", and on 23 July he wrote: "Naomi talking about wind instruments - oh the irony!"
On 9 November, Lord Weir said Ms O'Neill was "making a pig's ear of this" to which Mr Poots replied: "Comes naturally."
'Sour bake' On 6 August, Lord Weir appeared to refer to an exchange between Mr Poots and Nichola Mallon, at the time the Social Democratic and Labour Party's minister in the executive.
A person then wrote: "Edwin you managed to take her from zero to skywards v v quickly!!"
Mr Poots replied: "It's a speciality of mine. Enjoying the sour bake on her face now."
In another message on 15 June which appears to reference Sinn Féin Junior Minister Declan Kearney, Lord Weir wrote: "Where would we be without Declan's philosophical musings."
A person whose name is redacted replied: "At a shorter meeting."

2024.05.15 21:44 PurePraxisHF More than 1,000 high-level DUP messages show party top brass mocking the Catholic Church, laughing at rivals and deputy First Minister’s care for the vulnerable

https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus/more-than-1000-high-level-dup-messages-show-party-top-brass-mocking-the-catholic-church-laughing-at-rivalsand-deputy-first-ministers-care-for-the-vulnerable/a1175830802.html
Remarkable insight into DUP Executive team during the Executive after Edwin Poots handed over massive WhatsApp group – unlike Michelle O’Neill who deliberately wiped her messages after being given legal advice not to do so
More than 1,000 internal text messages between the DUP's most senior figures have been published by the Covid Inquiry, providing an unprecedented insight into what the party really thought and how it operated during the pandemic. The WhatsApp messages, some of which are acutely embarrassing for senior party figures, are being made public after they were given to the inquiry by former DUP minister Edwin Poots, now the Assembly Speaker, and have been published tonight.
That is in stark contrast to Sinn Féin, whose Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill admitted to the inquiry yesterday that she deliberately deleted everything from all her devices despite being warned by the Head of the Civil Service not to do so and despite being given written legal advice which specifically said text messages and WhatsApps should not be deleted.
So far, the inquiry hasn't published a single internal Sinn Féin message.
The DUP messages are from a WhatsApp group containing its Executive ministers, special advisers, and other senior party figures.
They show the party lampooning the Catholic Church, a message from Emma Little Pengelly that the public were looking for a "strong man", but also Mrs Little Pengelly's personal concern for some of the most deprived members of society, reminding colleagues that she came from a poor background.
The inquiry has made multiple redactions to the 63 pages of messages, some of which are hard to follow for that reason.
One of the individuals whose name has been blacked out appears to be Economy Minister Diane Dodds, who talks about going to vote in the European Parliament, and another is First Minister Arlene Foster, who confirmed that in oral testimony today.
However, there is no way to know how many other individuals were involved but have their names redacted.
The messages begin when Stormont returned at the start of 2020 following three years without devolved government.
Someone whose name has been blacked out by the inquiry said on 17 January 2020: "SF doesn't seem to have matured at all!!"
Emma Little Pengelly - then a special adviser but now deputy First Minister - replied sarcastically: "Well, why not - let English taxpayers subsidise our free prescriptions, lower rates, no water charges, lower tuition fees and free prescriptions...but hey, how dare you guys starve us of funding? #Perfidious Albion".
Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots responded: "And a £100m pa on welfare mitigation". Education Minister Peter Weir said: "Are any of [us] really surprised?"
The first reference to covid is on 23 January when an individual whose name has been blacked out said: "I hear there's a suspected case of this virus in RVH."
In apparent reference to Sinn Féin calling Michelle O'Neill 'joint head of government', someone said "this must be a new title bestowed on Michelle"; another person said: "they are at this all the time".
Another person whose name is hidden said: Certainly they cannot have that on official communications".
Mr Weir, whose messages are often laden with humour, said: "Perhaps I should start calling myself George Clooney, it's just as accurate".
The Education Minister said on 13 March: "I see on PA, Archbishop Eamon Martin is writing to me urging me to close all the schools. Wasn't aware of his qualifications in virology."
Someone whose name has been blacked out said: "Write back and tell him we don't live in the South and that his institution hasn't the best track record of looking out for the welfare of kids."
The following day, in an apparent reference to Sinn Féin, someone denounced "panicking people" and "totally irresponsible" behaviour.
On 14 March, in a reference to civil servants, someone said that "some of the officials don't inspire me".
The next day, Mr Weir said that solicitor Kevin Winters had launched a judicial review of the decision not to close schools. An unidentified person responded: "Read SF for KW". Mr Weir replied: "Indeed."
The messages show that DUP ministers genuinely believed they would be hurting people - and even endangering lives - by taking radical measures to shut down society.
But in their evidence to the inquiry several DUP ministers, including Arlene Foster and Edwin Poots, now accept that they should have locked down sooner.
On 14 March, Mr Weir said that "above all other considerations will be our protection of human life, which the best opportunity to do so is following the professional advice. If in the long run we can spare one extra family from the tragic loss of a loved one then we will have done the right thing rather than the politics of panic of others."
In another message, he said: "There is crazy stuff going about which if acted upon would simply cost lives."
On 15 March, Emma Little Pengelly lamented how teachers seemed to think they wouldn't be going to work once schools closed.
Mr Weir replied: "We could do with a few unnamed ministers not coming to work."
Two days later, Mr Poots said he was "under pressure with CAFRE", the agricultural college. Referring to Sinn Féin, he said: "The public are looking to us for leadership and we can't afford to be scrapping with them. That doesn't mean giving them want they want but need agreement."
Ms Little Pengelly's influence as Mrs Foster's key spad is evident. On 17 March, she set out how lockdown was likely days away and they needed to propose multiple measures including a single website for all pandemic information and "a stateswomanlike address to NI by FM and DFM".
She said: "We also need to be aware that in behaviour science terms we are now dealing with emergency, war time like circumstance - ergo people want to see what is termed in political science as 'strong man' political leaders - (now strong women..) - this is very well established. Strong and serious, calm and professional."
She urged ministers to be "empathetic and understanding" to the pressures faced by those struggling financially, reminding them that "those on working tax credit get free school meals (FSM}, many on that benefit DO work but may find themselves on reduced hours or redundant...and many of those on FSMs are our voters (I am saying this as a child who was a FSM child for many years)."
There is a gap of about a month in the messages. On 22 April, Mr Weir said: "Hargey has [another few words have been blacked out by the inquiry as 'irrelevant and sensitive']! She's had a tough paper round clearly."

2024.05.12 12:08 anewfriend4u Opinions on which episode to watch first?

Most fans agree watching the Doc Martin movies are a bad idea because the series is so different.
And some series give a better viewing experience if you don't watch the pilot, or very first episodes. Think about the very first Alice on the Honeymooners.
So interested in opinions when advising friends/family which Doc Martin episode would be the best for someone just getting familiar with the series to watch first?
Season 1 episode 1 is pretty good, but just throwing it out there if another episode might be better, even if it's out of order. I feel Mrs. Tishell is such an important character, and only makes an appearance in the third episode.
Btw and FYI, only found this series when it was playing in the fifth season on PBS. No idea how it might've turned out some other way had I tuned in on a different season.

Today’s Find
Bought West Side Story and Will the Circle be Unbroken from a flea market. I then drove to the record store (only one in town). The nice ladies at the record store were in the process of hooking up their amplifier and stuff so I helped them with that. Looked through their collection and found the Stealers Wheel album I’ve been searching for the past couple years. They gave it to me! So glad to finally have that one!!

2024.05.05 19:33 Random-Occurrence365 The Tiger in the Smoke

An old Hogwarts Professor post listed JKR’s literary influences and favorite authors. An interview is cited in which she mentions the big four of British crime fiction, but pays special attention to Margery Allingham and her Albert Campion novel The Tiger in the Smoke. As we wait for more information about THM, I decided to read it for clues as to what she considers a good crime novel. If you think you might read the book, stop now, because I reveal the entire plot.
The book is really not a who-done-it, because the police and Campion know who the culprit is early in the book. It’s the suspense of when or if they will catch up with the bad guy, and the chance more people will be hurt before they do, that creates the book’s feeling of urgency. It is also not much of a Campion book. He is connected to the action because of family ties, but it is set five years after World War II and he’s a bit less reckless than his younger self. He takes part, but doesn’t do much investigating on his own.
The tone of the book is one of dark menace, much of which comes from a heavy London fog, i.e. smoke. It darkens and obscures what should be a familiar landscape for the characters and so there is a built-in tension or uneasiness even before the villain of the book uses it to escape and disappear.
The villain, Jack Havoc, is a man who has gone by many names. The level of evil in him is such that people who have dealt with crime and the worst of humanity, such as Assistant Commissioner Oates, think he is its embodiment. Canon Avril represents goodness. He’s Albert Campion’s uncle. He is viewed as somewhat naïve in his human interactions, almost saintly, but he is actually quite aware of the worst of human nature and determined to do right. The Canon knows he risks his life to be in Jack’s presence, but he maneuvers events so that he meets Jack in his church. Despite his own fear, he feels it is his duty or calling to try stopping Havoc’s slide towards hell. What Havoc calls the Science of Luck, which is watching for opportunity and acting without compassion or softness, the Canon calls the Pursuit of Death. The Canon says Havoc’s way is Facilis descensus Averno which means the descent to hell is easy or it is easy to take the downward path (dictionary.com). The Canon doesn’t succeed in steering Jack from his evil path, but their conversation does shake him up enough that his knife misses its mark when he strikes to kill.
The action of the book is based on a search for treasure. Jack breaks out of prison by killing a doctor and then kills some more. During WWII he had been on a raid with Martin Elginbrodde, the husband of the Canon’s daughter, Meg. The raid was to what had been Martin’s childhood home on the French coast. Martin was chosen for the raid because he knew the way up the cliff of the seaside home. Havoc was chosen because he had no hesitation in killing. While there, Martin decided to check on whether the hiding place of the family treasure had been disturbed and then talked a bit too much to Havoc when their escape was delayed due to too much moonlight. He told Havoc he was leaving a letter to Meg’s future husband with information about the treasure, because he knew he might die during the war, which he did. But Havoc couldn’t act on what he knew because he ended the war in prison, and although Havoc knew where to look at the house, he didn’t know where the house was located, having arrived there by submarine. He’s forced to act when he learns Meg is ready to remarry. He needs the letter.
The book makes use of a classic mystery trope, in fact it uses two variations. From prison, Havoc tried to get Meg to believe Martin was still alive so she would call off or delay her wedding to Geoffrey Levitt. Was Martin dead or alive? And then there is the story involving the Canon’s wife who had been blackmailed to misidentify a body as Johnny Cash, the 16-year-old son of Lucy Cash. Mrs. Cash depends on a cloak of respectability to run her shady business, so when Johnny was sent to prison, she decided Johnny needed to disappear. Of course, he resurfaces as Jack Havoc. The Canon suspects Havoc’s real identity, because his wife had confessed what she’d done on her deathbed, but he’s not certain until they meet in the church. The Canon remembers him as being “of Evil”, even as a babe. He doesn’t believe Havoc is redeemable, but chooses to meet him anyway.
Havoc learns the location of the house, from the Canon no less. It’s at a place called Sainte-Odile-sur-Mer. He and a thuggish group (who had kidnapped Geoffrey at one point) escape London, steal a smack (boat), and sail off to find the treasure, which they think is one of silver and gold. Meg, Geoffrey and Albert and Amanda Campion have just arrived to retrieve it themselves. They’ve run into delays getting there, one being that it becomes an island at high tide. They leave Meg at the house while they go get what they need to free the treasure from its hiding place and, of course, this is when Havoc arrives, physically exhausted from his climb up the cliff and days on the run.
I think there is a second showdown between good and evil when the treasure is revealed. Jack and Meg work together. She doesn’t realize who he is. I found it symbolic that Jack breaks his knife in the process of freeing it from its hiding place. The treasure is a Virgin and child made of ivory (it has a real-life twin) which brings forth tears in Meg, but leaves Jack unmoved and disappointed the treasure isn’t the gold and silver of his dreams. He doesn’t believe in goodness or softness. He wants to destroy it, thinking there must be more to it. But he leaves to make his escape before doing so and his luck holds until he reaches the edge of the cliff which looks over a pool 200 feet below. This is where his life ends, in his very own Averno, the entrance to the underworld.
That’s the end of my book report. The Canon makes a couple of statements that I like, one which Strike might want to remember when thinking about Rokeby. He said to DCI Charlie Luke, “Beware of anger. It is the most difficult to remove of all the hindrances. But it is the alcohol of the body, you know, and the devil of it is that it deadens the perceptions.”
And elsewhere he thought “If only anyone could tell anybody else anything. If only one could know by being told.” People need to find out things, sort through feelings, for themselves. Ilsa keeps trying to tell things to Robin and Strike, but they just won’t listen or believe.
Like a Strike mystery, it took a couple of readings to really appreciate how the plot and the people fit together. And though I don't think JKR is going to write her version of this book, in light of her emojis and headers, I like that it includes an island (at times), boat, treasure, escaped prisoner, and misidentification.

Fictional Mice Iceberg (Miceberg?)
*Yes, Vladek Speigelman was an actual person. I’m referring to his interpretation as a mouse in Maus. I was debating whether or not to add him. But since the book he’s in is relatively well-known, I felt like going for it. I sincerely hope that this entry isn’t interpreted as trivializing or denying the holocaust.

Chapter 6 : Finale revelation
In the prison, Carl Solomon and Sam Bradley question one of the guards
-yes, on the day of Jacob Brown's murder, I saw a blonde woman wearing a black scarf hiding the bottom of her face from her chin to her nose, a black dress and sunglasses entered the prison before until I discovered Jacob Brown's body much later.
The guard walks away from them.
-but this description is the same as that of the mysterious blonde woman who entered movie theater number 4 and then left. So the same blonde woman would have gone to two places where two murders occurred, it's even more suspicious, so here is my hypothesis, this blonde woman would in fact be Audrey Martin, she would have killed Rebecca Martin, but then after the sergeant Martinez failed in attempted murder of Jacob Brown, she decided to kill him herself says Sam Bradley
-if your hypothesis is based on the fact that Audrey Martin is this mysterious blonde woman, I can tell you that you are wrong, and now I am sure that I have correctly deduced the killer of Rebecca Blake and Jacob Brown, we have to put together the suspects so that I can finally reveal the identity of the culprit.
Later, in the Martins' mansion, in a bedroom, the remaining suspects from the case, David Martin, Edward Blake, Janet Bailey, Francesca Bailey, Jack and Andrea Martin who are still handcuffed in orange prison jumpsuits are all sitting on chairs while Inspector Carl Solomon and Sam Bradley stand in front of them.
-during this investigation, the number of suspects increased little by little, but I tell you that I finally managed to deduce the identity of the assassin thanks to the assembly of all the clues and I will reveal it but for now patience, first of all, let's talk about this mysterious supposedly blonde woman in a black scarf wearing sunglasses and a black dress who we now know went in and out of movie theater number 4 and we have now learned that she also entered the prison on the same day that Jacob Brown's body was later discovered in one of the cells of that prison, even though she was our biggest suspect, I still had doubts about whether she was involved in the murders or if she was completely innocent but I still managed to deduce quite early who this blonde woman must be thanks to a whole collection of clues, but I will confirm something, this that my teammate agent Bradley's suspicion is false, I am absolutely sure that Audrey Martin is absolutely not this mysterious supposedly blonde woman, Mrs. Martin, didn't you tell me that you can no longer find your black scarf during the night of Rebecca's murder and you finally found him the next day in the bathroom just a few minutes after you let Janet Bailey into the mansion because she wanted to see your son David aka Carl Solomon
-yes said Andrey Martin
-wouldn't you have noticed that your black scarf would have disappeared a second time said Carl Solomon
-yes, this happened a second time, I couldn't find my black scarf a second time and I found it again later in the bathroom but this second time happened in the same day says Audrey Martin.
-and on what day did this second time happen said Carl Solomon
-my black scarf disappeared again and I found it again a few hours later... the day the body of Jacob Brown was discovered in his cell says Audrey Martin.
-exactly, the black scarf that this mysterious supposedly blonde woman had, it was yours that she had stolen from your house twice in order to use it to hide the lower part of her face, so that her chin, her mouth and her nose is hidden by the black scarf because she absolutely did not want to be recognized at each of the two places where the murder of Rebecca Blake and later that of Jacob Brown took place, ... it This is why she disguised herself with a black scarf, sunglasses, a black dress and a blonde wig reveals Carl Solomon.
-so what you mean is that it wasn't a real blonde woman who walked into the room number 4 of the movie theater and the prison, she was wearing a blonde wig said Sam Bradley
-exactly, it was very ingenious but eventually I unmasked her and now I'm going to reveal the identity of the culprit, let's start with the clues first, you should have wondered who knew that Rebecca Blake would go to the cinema to see scream 5, she was someone whose clues led me to deduce that she was the mysterious blonde woman who entered the room number 4 of the cinema and later the prison, she was someone who took advantage of murder of Rebecca Blake, someone who said something she shouldn't have known from what she made me believe, someone who took a .357 magnum revolver the day Jacob Brown was shot with this type of revolver, all the evidence led me to deduce the identity of the culprit, it is you, the killer of Rebecca Blake and Jacob Brown, Janet Bailey, you are the culprit said Carl Solomon
-it's false said Janet Bailey defending herself.
-yes, it's you and I deduced that you were the supposedly blonde woman quite early on. Clue number 1: the black scarf returning to the Martins' mansion, a few minutes after Audrey Martin let you in, she finds the black scarf that she suddenly couldn't find anymore, it was in fact you who got it had put it in the bathroom discreetly after she let you in.
Clue number 2: When I saw you talking with Jacob Brown in the classroom, I noticed that you were wearing a black dress and the supposedly blonde woman entering and exiting the movie theater was wearing a black dress
Clue number 3: when you went to talk to me outside in front of the police station, you and David were wearing sunglasses, the mysterious blonde woman was wearing them
Clue number 4: your mother Francesca Bailey revealed to me that you bought lots of wigs, a red wig, a brown wig but she told me that you also bought a blonde wig, this blonde wig served you well to complete your disguise that you wore in movie theater number 4 and later in the prison
And now here are the clues that led me to deduce that you were indeed the killer too.
Clues that you killed Rebecca Blake:
Clue number 1: you knew well before her death that Rebecca would go to the cinema to see scream 5, so you knew that by going to the cinema and asking for a ticket to scream 5, you would be told which theater to watch it in and that in this theater you could kill Rebecca, a fairly easy murder to commit when you know where the victim would go and what film she was going to see.
Clue Number 2: The four clues I revealed that led me to deduce that you were the supposedly blonde woman who entered and exited movie theater number 4 where Rebecca Blake was killed.
Clue number 3: David Martin revealed to me that you were now engaged, that you were in love with him even when Rebecca Blake was still alive and was David's fiancé and that you still loved him, you even told David that it seemed suspicious to say now but now that Rebecca was dead, you had her all to yourself, the murder of Rebecca Blake therefore took advantage of you, the fact that you had become David's new fiancé just after his former girlfriend Rebecca Blake being dead is very suspicious, it must have been that, your motive, you killed Rebecca Blake because as David's girlfriend, she was the obstacle that prevented you from becoming David's new girlfriend.
Clues that you killed Jacob Brown:
Clue number 1: When you came home and I told you that Jacob Brown had been shot in his cell, you said you didn't know, you didn't know at all, but if it did was actually the first time you learned this information, you would not have told David that Jacob Brown had been shot with a .357 magnum revolver because I never told you that Jacob Brown had been shot with a .357 magnum revolver. 357 magnum, how could you have known if this was really the first time you learned this information, this clue led me to suspect you even more
Clue number 2: David revealed to me that on the day of Jacob Brown's murder, it was you who took your mother Francesca Bailey's .357 magnum revolver that she had hidden under her bed and I don't believe it. justification you told David to explain this.
Clue number 3: the discovery that the mysterious blonde woman having gone to the cinema also entered the prison, on the day of the murder of Jacob Brown in one of the cells of this prison, I had deduced earlier that you were the famous blonde woman so I knew it must be you too.
But it's not these clues that will lead me to arrest you, it's the evidence that we have to find, says Carl Solomon
-what, what evidence asks Janet Bailey.
-I asked that Officer Bradley go into the prison and examine the floor for little hairs said Carl Solomon
-even if you wore a blonde wig in the prison, I managed to take one of your hairs which had fallen on the ground and I had the DNA of this hair analyzed, it was indeed yours said Sam Bradley
-and I went to your house to take your blonde wig and I compared it with the video of the blonde woman in the prison that was filmed by the surveillance cameras, I noticed that your blonde wig and the This woman's blonde hair was actually identical, says Carl Solomon
-it turns out that this mysterious blonde woman who has hair identical to your blonde wig was filmed by surveillance cameras shooting Jacob Brown, you better confess everything says Sam Bradley
Later at the police station in the interrogation room Janet Bailey sits on a chair behind a silver table while Inspector Carl Solomon stands in front of her.
-so Miss Bailey, now that we are both alone, do you feel capable of confessing everything said Carl Solomon
-yes..... first of all I'm going to tell you about how I was able to bring David Martin to my house in order to make him drink ghb which I had put in a glass of water which he 'as drunk that was what he had put to sleep, I just didn't want him to go to this meeting at the cinema so that I could go in his place, I went to put on my disguise made up of the black scarf that I stole my sunglasses, my black dress and my blonde wig from Mrs. Martin, when I entered room number 4, I still waited for the film to end and once the other spectators were left the room and I was alone with Rebecca Blake I took the opportunity and I took a knife out of my purse and I stabbed her with it.... to become the new girlfriend of David Martin known as Janet Bailey.
-why did you kill Jacob Brown asks Carl Solomon
-he spoke to me in a very cryptic way in the classroom but I understood what he wanted me to understand, he let me know that having also been in room number 4, he had realized that it was me the blonde woman but when I saw that you had also entered the classroom, to try to avoid suspicion from you towards me, I said: "yes I would tell this girl to confess everything to the competents authority"I knew that if I was going to keep the fact that I was the blonde woman a secret, I had to kill Jacob Brown said Janet Bailey.
Later, in an area of the police station, the Commissioner Maxwell Andersen advances towards Carl Solomon
-inspector, I was told what happened with this Sergeant Martinez, what a shame to the police, this sergeant is, it's the type of man who gives the police a bad reputation, I'm sorry that he I tried to kill you said Commissioner Andersen.
-luckily, me and agent Bradley, we are doing well said Carl Solomon who walks away from Commissioner Andersen

Chapter 6 : Sergeant Martinez
At the morgue, Carl Solomon speaks with the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Jacob Brown's corpse.
-so what types of bullets were fired into Jacob Brown's body Asks Carl Solomon
-after doing the autopsy, I was able to examine the bullets that were inside the corpse of Jacob Brown. And I am now sure that these were three bullets fired which came from a 357 magnum caliber revolver, said the medical examiner.
Later still at the police station in another location, Inspector Carl Solomon walks towards one of his police colleagues, Sergeant Martinez
-Sergeant Martinez, I order you to ask your police colleagues to search the mansion of the Martin family and the Bailey family to possibly find 357 magnum caliber revolvers, the bullets having been fired at Jacob Brown were fired from this type of revolver known as Carl Solomon
-Okay, inspector said Sergeant Martinez.
A few hours later, at the Martins' mansion, Jack Martin had entered the mansion, he noticed while looking at what was happening in his room, that a bunch of police officers were searching it, a police officer came forward. towards Jack Martin holding a revolver he had found.
-yes, this revolver belongs to me and the room you have just searched is mine and also that of my wife said Jack Martin
-Inspector Solomon ordered the search of your mansion as well as another house, and it was with a reason that he did that, you surely know what happened to Jacob Brown, he was shot with a 357 magnum caliber revolver said the police officer.
-yes,...I heard about his death said Jack Martin
Later in the Baileys' house, Janet Bailey entered her house and then saw a bunch of police officers in her house as well as Inspector Carl Solomon who walked towards her holding a .357 magnum revolver which had been found by one of the police
-What's going on asks Janet Bailey.
-you hadn't heard about what happened to Jacob Brown, he was murdered when he was in his cell, he was shot three times, asks Carl Solomon
-no, I didn't know, I wasn't aware at all, said Janet Bailey.
-well we searched your house and one of my colleagues found this revolver in your house said Carl Solomon
-this revolver does not belong to me, it belongs to my mother, ask her, she will confirm it to you says Janet Bailey.
-that's what I was about to ask him, said Carl Solomon.
David Martin runs through the house until he is in front of Janet.
-police officers also went to search our mansion says David Martin
Francesca Bailey walks towards Inspector Carl Solomon who shows her the revolver.
-Mrs Bailey, your daughter Janet told me that this revolver actually belongs to you, whether it is true or not said Carl Solomon.
-yes, it was me who bought it to ensure our safety in case burglars broke into the house during the night, I put it in the house under my bed in my bedroom said Francesca Bailey
-could anyone have taken this revolver other than you, says Carl Solomon
-yes, I suppose but you would have had to look carefully said Francesca Bailey.
-we actually found this revolver under the bed in your room at least I suppose it was your room but someone other than you could have perfectly taken this revolver from under the bed and then put it back under the bed later. ..after using it to kill Jacob Brown with it, but that's just a hypothesis says Carl Solomon
Later, during the night, Sergeant Martinez had a discussion on the phone outside with Jack Martin who had picked up his phone from the mansion:
-It will be done, I promise you, you had better pay me even more money than usual after I have done it because I have a feeling that it is not going to be easy, said Sergeant Martinez who hangs up and begins to take a 357 magnum caliber revolver out of his pocket with his hand.
-my old 357 magnum caliber revolver...you will still be useful said Sergeant Martinez
The next day at the station, Inspector Carl Solomon is in his office talking with Officer Sam Bradley.
-so Francesca Bailey and Jack Martin both have .357 magnum revolvers, do you think it could be one of them, our killer, Carl asks Sam Bradley.
-maybe, but I'm not sure at the moment said Carl Solomon
Meanwhile, in another part of the police station, Sergeant Martinez speaks with one of his colleagues, Agent Wilson
-Agent Wilson, did you know where Inspector Solomon is right now said Sergeant Martinez.
-he is with his teammate, agent Bradley inside his office said agent Wilson
Meanwhile in Inspector Carl Solomon's office, he is still talking with Sam Bradley.
-so, you still won't tell me who you deduced to be the blonde woman who entered and left this movie theater said Sam Bradley
-for the moment, no, I'm not sure of his guilt... or his innocence says Carl Solomon
But meanwhile Sergeant Martinez is in front of Inspector Solomon's office door, holding his 357 magnum caliber revolver with his hand, pointing the revolver towards the window of the office door, he fires a bullet with his revolver, breaking the office window but the bullet which penetrated the window began to lodge itself in Sam Bradley's arm and did not hit Carl Solomon, contrary to what Sergeant Martinez wanted.
Martinez began to quickly run away from the office door, Carl Solomon and Sam Bradley could not see that it was he who had fired the shot.
-my god Sam, someone just shot you, I'm calling the hospital said Carl Solomon
-no, I will, I have my phone on me, try to go looking for the person who shot me said Sam Bradley
Carl starts running out of the office to pursue the individual who shot, later, in another area of the police station, Carl Solomon runs towards Sergeant Martinez and Agent Wilson.
-did you see someone else running in the police station, by chance said Carl Solomon
-No, why said Agent Wilson
-someone has just attempted murder in the police station, I was in my office with Sam Bradley when suddenly a mysterious individual shot Sam Bradley and fled said Carl Solomon
-I didn't see anyone else running said Sergeant Martinez
later, during the night, in the Baileys' house, in Janet Bailey's room, the latter, sitting on her bed just like David Martin is, begins to speak to him:
-I have to tell you a secret, said Janet Bailey.
-what kind of confidence says David Martin
-I never told you, but during the time that Rebecca was still alive and still with you... I was in love with you and I always am, said Janet Bailey.
-I think it's mutual, I realized recently that I have romantic feelings for you says David Martin.
That's when David and Janet start kissing on the lips.
They stop kissing after a few minutes
-It seems suspicious to say but now that she is dead, I have you alone said Janet Bailey.
The next day at the police station, Inspector Carl Solomon questions Agent Wilson:
-interesting detail, did he ever tell you about the type of revolver he had on him said Carl Solomon.
-no why... do you suspect Sergeant Martinez, why would he do that says Agent Wilson
-I'm not sure it's him at the moment and if it's him that's what I'd like to find out says Carl Solomon
later Sam Bradley, having a cast on his arm, enters Carl Solomon's office
-hello, Carl said Sam Bradley
-I was so worried about you my friend said Carl Solomon who is also inside his own office.
-do you have any answers on who shot me said Sam Bradley
-not yet but I have suspicions that I will soon be sure of says Carl Solomon
Suddenly, Agent Bransen enters the office too.
-you asked to see me, inspector said agent Bransen
-yes, that's why I sent one of your colleagues to tell you to go to my office, so I was told that you and Sergeant Martinez are very close, very good friends didn't it say Carl Solomon
-yes, we said it, Agent Bransen
-did he reveal in a conversation what the caliber of his revolver was said Carl Solomon
-yes...he told me that a long time ago but I think I remember it, Sergeant Martinez told me that he had a 357 magnum caliber revolver said agent Bransen
Agent Bransen leaves the office.
-explain to me a little more said Sam Bradley
-clue number 1: Agent Wilson told me that before you were shot in my office, Sergeant Martinez asked him where I was and he told him that I was with you in my office , so he could know where to go to shoot one of us
Clue number 2: the fact that he was one of the people present at the police station the same day you were shot by this mysterious shooter in the police station
Clue number 3: the revolver that the shooter used to shoot you was a 357 magnum revolver and I just learned that Sergeant Martinez had this type of revolver. Putting together all these clues leads me to deduce that the person who shot you in the police station must have been Sergeant Martinez, I have to find him and make him confess says Carl Solomon
-but Jacob Brown was also shot with a 357 magnum revolver, do you believe that it was also Sergeant Martinez who killed him, asks Sam Bradley
-That, I'm not sure, but I'm sure it was him who shot you says Carl, who starts running out of his office
Later in another part of the station, Carl Solomon speaks to Agent Wilson.
-agent Wilson, this is very important, do you know where Sergeant Martinez would have gone said Carl Solomon
Later, during the evening, Sergeant Martinez finally arrived at his meeting in front of the house at 15 Joe Jensen Street where Jack Martin was waiting for him, he walked towards him.
-you have failed once again, two failed murder attempts on two different people, two said Jack Martin.
-I'm sorry, Mr. Martin, I wanted to shoot Carl Solomon like you asked me to do but the bullet from my revolver hurt Sergeant Bradley instead, said Sergeant Martinez.
-As you usually do well at your job, I'm giving you another chance to redeem yourself and succeed in killing Inspector Solomon this time, said Jack Martin.
Suddenly, Carl Solomon and Sam Bradley who were both hiding behind the house at 15 Joe Jensen Street come out of their hiding place holding revolvers in their hands and appear in front of Jack Martin and Sergeant Martinez.
-surprise, we heard everything and Agent Bradley recorded the entire conversation with an application on his cell phone, this is the evidence I needed, you are both under arrest, and your conspiracy against me is finished said Carl Solomon
Sergeant Martinez runs away from them to escape but Sam Bradley runs up to him and jumps on him and manages to handcuff him.
Carl Solomon handcuffs Jack Martin meanwhile.
Later, at the police station, during the night, in the interrogation room, Carl Solomon is standing in front of Sergeant Martinez who is sitting on a chair behind a silver table.
-so, Martinez, I would like you to answer very frankly, did you also kill Rebecca Blake and Jacob Brown question Carl Solomon.
-no I didn't kill them, Mr. Martin had also ordered me to shoot Jacob Brown, I tried but I didn't succeed and someone else shot him in my place later , I even suspect Mr. Martin or his wife of having done it themselves, says Sergeant Martinez.
-what else did you do under the orders of Jack Martin said Carl Solomon
-he and his wife ordered me to kill a bunch of people for them, from the CEOs of competing companies to the one where Mr. Martin was the CEO, a detective hired by one of the families of my victims to discover the truth, I didn't even count how many victims I murdered in total and after these murders Mr. or Mrs. Martin always paid me said Sergeant Martinez
Later at the Martins' mansion, Audrey Martin is handcuffed by Officer Sam Bradley.
-you are under arrest for having ordered several murders said Sam Bradley.
Meanwhile, in the Baileys' house, in Janet Baileys' room, she is lying on the bed as is David Martin who is lying on the bed next to her.
-It still surprises me that we are now engaged, I never thought it would happen says David Martin.
-me, it was always one of my biggest hopes that you would become my boyfriend and that's it, you have become one said Janet Bailey
-I have to tell you something, I spoke to your mother and she told me that she actually noticed that the gun was no longer under her bed, the place where she had hidden it for a few hours before one of your teachers, Jacob Brown was found dead in his cell, then after the body was discovered, you entered your house and a few minutes later, the revolver mysteriously returned under the your mother's bed, who also told me that you knew where her revolver had been hidden because she told you, said David Martin.
-What are you doing there, are you suspecting me and then how do you know exactly what time Mr. Brown's body was discovered said Janet Bailey.
-no, not at all, and I inquired to find out, but what I want is for you to be honest with me, trust me, if you took the gun, it will be our secret, don't worry don't worry, says David Martin
-okay don't tell anyone about this, but yes, it was me who took my mother's .357 magnum revolver that she had hidden under the bed the same day Jacob Brown was killed and I I then put it back under my mother's bed a few hours later...but I only took it for my safety because I wanted to go buy some clothes in a store and I knew the route I was going to take to go to this store would lead me to walk in a district of the city well known for its attacks on innocent people by thugs, I wanted to protect myself, that's all, but above all don't tell anyone about it, not even the police, that could draw suspicion on me says Janet Bailey.
-that's okay, Janet, it will be our secret said David Martin.
But for a good while still lying on the bed, David Martin couldn't stop thinking about what Janet had just revealed to him, he was secretly very struck by the possible implications of this revelation.
later, still at night, outside, David Martin finished explaining to Carl Solomon, near the Baileys' house, what his new girlfriend Janet Bailey had revealed to him.
-...and here's what she told me, but I don't think she's capable of it.. at least, I hope she's not the killer says David Martin.
-I did the right thing by making you my informant, David, and from what you tell me, you and Janet became engaged several days after the death of your former girlfriend Rebecca said Carl Solomon
-yes and Janet clearly confirmed to me that she was in love with me since I always had Rebecca as a girlfriend, even before her death, she even told me that it seems suspicious to say now but now that Rebecca was dead, she had me all to herself said David Martin
-interesting, and my poor David, I'm sorry to tell you but your parents have both been arrested, they are currently in prison says Carl Solomon
-what, they are accused of what said David Martin
-for ordering murders says Carl Solomon

2024.05.03 05:05 Far-Adagio4032 Jane Austen is the Queen of Love Triangles

This is not something I think I've ever seen anyone talk about, but Jane Austen loved love triangles, and her books are crazy fully of them. Mansfield Park has so many love triangles I actually sat down and diagrammed them out one time. I've always wanted to write a fic where Henry falls for Fanny during the play, then there could be ALL THE LOVE TRIANGLES active at the same time.
And it's not just MP. Just look at Emma. We have 3 marriageable young women, Emma, Jane and Harriet, and 3 marriageable men, Elton, Frank and Knightley. It's like Austen accepted a dare to see how many love triangles or perceived love triangles she could create between these six characters. I think Jane and Elton are the only two who are never potentially matched together. (And then there's Robert Martin and Mrs. Elton tossed in for good measure too.)
Pride and Prejudice (again, real or perceived):
Elizabeth - Caroline - Darcy
Elizabeth - Anne - Darcy
Elizabeth - Wickham - Darcy
Jane - Bingley - Georgiana
You could make an argument for Elizabeth - Col Fitzwilliam - Darcy, and even for Charlotte - Mr. Collins - Elizabeth (though that's more of a triangle of awkwardness), or Charlotte - Mr. Collins - Mary.
The entire plot of Sense and Sensibility revolves around the two main love triangles of Elinor - Edward - Lucy; and Marianne - Willoughby - Brandon. Throw in how many people think Elinor and Brandon are an item (including Edward at one point) and Lucy making off with Edward's brother, and it's a party.
Persuasion has 4 love triangles I can think of, more if you count Henrietta's momentary interest in Wentworth, and even Northanger Abbey has two. I don't even want to think of how many love triangles there are in Lady Susan.
I know most people insist that they hate love triangles, but I have to admit that I've always really enjoyed them, provided they're not stupidly done. I love the fact that Austen's books play around so much with the idea of matches, and what makes a good match. Her heroines aren't just given a single option, they typically have multiple suitors or potential suitors to consider, and a lot of the conflict of the story revolves around them (and their men) figuring out what really matters in a mate, and how to tell the good ones from the bad ones.

2024.05.02 17:25 boopboopadoopity The Ultimate Reference/Context Guide to Bye Bye Birdie (Part 1)

So I'm in Bye Bye Birdie for the first time. There are SO many references that I feel like I had to do research to figure out. I can't believe how much I miss of the references and context. The only place I found these compiled was this text-based personal website last dated 16 years ago, and even then it's only a few (though really key ones!) and some of them don't show up in my 2024 copy - I wonder if they were pared down. Regardless, figured I'd make a context and reference list based on the copy I have!
I can't fit it all in one post, I exceed the text limit, so we'll start with Act 1 with general context stuff and the second post will be Act 2 only :)

Context

How Dated Was the Musical When Released?
Bye Bye Birdie is famously a direct reference to Elvis Presley getting drafted in 1957 and the stir it caused. But note the musical was written and published in 1958, and went on Broadway in 1960. It's like if a musical went on Broadway this year (2024) about a blonde-haired pop star named Tay-lee Quick (instead of Taylor Swift) who performed a world tour, but didn't initially book any dates in Canada, causing a massive outcry, leading to several Canadian officials and the president "Justice Troodoo" to beg her to stop there and... something else silly happens involving her, then she gets punched by a jealous girlfriend, and silliness ensues.
That is how on-the-nose this musical really is. There are many references to what would have been VERY modern events in this musical. For that reason, I'll try to give some equivalences of how the references in the musical would sound if it was written today.
Elvis' Perception in America
This extensive Wikipedia article does a great job of saying in many words that Elvis was insanely influential and deeply controversial. 1956 was a major year of stardom for Elvis -
Phone Calls
Phones are obviously a huge part of this musical! Wanted to combine all the phone references here.
Kim's Phone Number: Kim's number is, according to Rosie in Act 1, Scene 1, "Capitol 7 - 8820". In the 50s, the previous system which used 6-digit phone numbers started to be replaced by one that used an "exchange prefix" and 5 digits after. (Source) (Source) At the time, phone numbers that didn't connect to anyone were given out for shows like I Love Lucy, so that may be what happened here as well, though I don't know.
One Phone Line to Share: Kim's mother asks her to get off the phone early in the play so she can take a phone call. For a long time before cell phones, each home had a "home number" and you couldn't use it at the same time. This is why Kim's mother is asking her to finish up her call so she can call someone and eventually get a phone call as well.
Picking Kim's Number: Rosie uses a rolodex she randomly flips through to pick Kim - which would have been very standard in the 1950s.
The Operator Trying to Get Through: Calls were pushed through using real people, usually women, plugging lines into a "switchboard" to connect them manually. So when Kim's mom says the operator has been trying to get through for nearly three quarters of an hour, she's been trying to not get a busy signal when manually connecting the lines for 45 minutes! That's dedication!
Mr. MacAfee Frustrated with Long Distance Calls: Cost of international calls at this time was per-minute - so calls to New York, Chicago, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Hong Kong would have cost a pretty penny - over $100 for the first 3 minutes in a similar estimation! It sounds like Conrad and Albert didn't really offer to cover this cost, so you can see why Mr. MacAfee is so cross.
Getting Pinned/Going Steady
"Going steady" referred to, in short, being exclusive with someone. "As Time reported in 1957, "Boys and girls who go steady dance together exclusively (cutting in is frowned upon), sip their sodas, absorb their double features and spin their platters in each other's company or not at all. Steady-going girls indicate their unavailability in various ways, [like] the old-fashioned fraternity pins." (Source) It's mentioned in other sources that this could also be school pins, or rings. Something to show your commitment. One of the heads of my production described it like a "promise ring". It's definitely a firmer promise and commitment then just going out with someone, but not quite an engagement.
However, why, if this is such a sweet gesture of romantic love and commitment, would everyone be freaking out about it, and Kim's parents potentially not reacting well to "getting pinned" or "going steady"? (Kim has a line where she exclaims to her mother that she thinks her dad took the announcement "awfully well"). Truth be told, going steady in high school was actually highly discouraged by adults and especially church at the time. This article/Reddit thread sheds some light. I'll copy the first comment here by u/Gfrisse1. "It was felt that going steady would encourage the relationship to develop into one of physical intimacy, something parents wished to avoid. On the other hand, dating a wider, more diverse number of individuals would give them the experience of being exposed to a greater number of character and personality types, thereby helping to hone their mate-selection skills for later on. In the meantime, the short-term relationships were not expected to get much beyond the first- or second-date stage of intimacy. (One-night-stands, or casual hook-ups were not as common-place as they are today.)"
Cigarettes/Age
There are many references to smoking, cigarettes, and how old you should be in this play. It's complicated, but just know that in the 1950s, EVERYONE smoked. Everywhere. In the early 1950s, though, the first studies were coming out with the link to lung cancer, and tobacco companies used every trick in the book to try to squash that. It's genuinely fascinating (and terrifying) how much money and strategy was poured into this misinformation campaign. Read about it here. Anyway, what this means is in the late 1950s, it's not like most were giving up smoking, but because tobacco companies had started more explicitly advertising to minors, several states were in debate about the smoking age. It varied from 21 to 16, but just know that Kim was not considered old enough to be doing it. (Source.)) However, MANY minors did. Think of it like underaged drinking today as the best analogy. There's some specific cigarette references that will pop up in specific scenes, but just know that's the standard.
Patriotism
Fresh(ish) off of the victory of World War II, which was filled with MASSIVE pushes for increased American patriotism (to the degree that Disney even got in on it!), love for the USA was very culturally acceptable and a way to show you were a good person! It was easy to rally around (especially if you ignored the growing civil rights movement of Black people trying to achieve equality, which many white people at the time were very happy to do until they could no longer ignore it - obviously, not touched on in this musical, but significant. Several racist references have been either removed or are requested to be removed by current versions.) But that's why we hear so many classic American anthems in this play!

References by Order of Appearance (Act 1)

Almaelou Music Corporation
This is the end of Almaelou Music Corporation!
Almaelou may very well be a parody of Aldon Music, which would fit due to its major success being in the late 50s, and it's influence in music written for teen girls at the time.
Arpege
Rosie: A five-dollar raise in 1954 and a bottle of Arpege last Christmas.
Arpege is a perfume that was released in 1927 and remained the best-selling perfume of well-loved fashion line Levine for decades. (Source) Albert is quoting a commercial tagline tied to the perfume that was very well-known at the time. It continued to be used in commercials for many years. (Commercial example). It was possible to see 1/2 oz bottles at the time (Source), but Albert gave her a laughably small amount at 1/16 of an ounce. You can still buy this perfume today!
A five-dollar raise in 1954. Secretaries in metropolitan areas could earn around $75 a week. (Source) A five-dollar raise bringing that to $80 a week would, ironically, be about a 1/16 increase in earnings. Also, Rosie is pointing out in an earlier line she has put in 90 hour weeks and hasn't gotten a raise in four years.
Modern example:
Rosie: My last raise was four years ago and you got me that jewelry from Kay Jewelers once
Albert: "Every Kiss Begins with Kay", Rosie. Rosie: Not when that "Kay" is a .25 karat discontinued friendship ring!
Music Business Bum Vs. English Teacher
This is related to the prestige of being an English teacher who is helping people learn a scholarly subject vs. the "seedy" music industry.
Ugga Bugga Boo
"When you wrote Conrad's last hit 'Ugga Bugga Boo' then I knew this was it/You were thru with English forever."
Ugga Bugga Boo is a real song released 1947. It's a comedy song, written by voice acting legend and radio host Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and many others) for his comedy radio show. I do wonder if Elvis had a song in this vein, as the Jetsons did a similar parody with an Elvis expy a few years later, but I couldn't find one.
Geoffrey ChauceWilliam Morris
"It was goodbye, Geoffrey ChauceHello, William Morris"
Geoffrey Chaucer is considered one of the greatest English writers, specifically poets, of all time. Born in the 1400s.
As for William Morris, this could be two references, possibly combining.
William Morris Agency was an incredibly famous music talent agency that would have likely been known by some audience members in the 1950s. They've represented tons of major talent. This is what I believe is the most likely reference given the song context.
However William Morris was a man also considered a legendary poet during his life, born in the 1830s. However, he also made wallpapers and textiles. After his passing, he became infinitely more famous in the public eye for his wallpaper designs than he did for his poetry. This is could be a dig at that Alfred could be great in the English world, but like Morris, his legacy will be for something "silly" instead. (Important to note that his works, both art and poetry, had great impact - and this may just be a coincidence reference, I don't know)
Bliss! Kiss! That rhymes! I wonder if anyone's ever used it before?
Many people had and have, this is a joke of him being unaware of current trends. Dean Martin had a #1 song in 1955 with this very rhyme for instance that audiences may have remembered at the time.
Dentifrice
Albert: Oh one last kiss; it gives so much bliss... what is your dentifrice! No, that's too clinical...
Basically, toothpaste. Which is, kind of, related to kissing? It could actually be a paste or powder for cleaning the teeth, though in the 50s it wouldn't have been the default way to refer to what you used it seems from my research, like in this commercial. May be a way to show off that Albert really does have an excellent English teacher level vocabulary!
A modern example may be "do you use fluoride? No, that's too clinical..."
"What's the story? Morning glory?"
This is most likely a reference to the song "What's Your Story, Morning Glory?" by jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald released in 1958, another topical reference. It's very possible Helen, the teen who says this line, would be aware of the song because Ella Fitzgerald in 1956 had released her "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book" album, her attempt to pull in a non-jazz audience. (Source on Ella's Discography)
"What's the tale, nightingale" is most likely an original line to match the "Morning glory" one, same with the hummingbird line.
"Go to a fancy night club and stay out after ten!"
A nightclub was different from what we think of today. Think tables and chairs, late night musical performances (not the NSFW kind), and in some of the most famous like the Copacabana night club, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. And drinking, of course! Source on Nightclub Definition
18 in World War II
Mr. MacAfee: I am not an old man! I was 18 in World War II.
This is one that may get a bit better with time. WWII ended in 1945, but the play is in 1958 at the earliest. It's better to demonstrate with a modern example written for 2024. "I am not an old man! I was 18 when Facebook first launched." Not quite the same impact as WWII, but the timeline is similar. Essentially this is not a flex and just shows he definitely is old to a teenager.
No Smoking 'Till You're 14
Albert: Remember the Conrad Birdie Creed dear. No smoking till you're fourteen.
As mentioned in my blurb above, 14 was too young to smoke. A modern version may say "No drinking 'till you're 16" or something. Similar to the line "and stay out of the bar!" later on.
"Go down to Track 12"
Albert: Why don't you girls go down to Track 12 and I'll talk to her.
This is one of the many train tracks that must have run through this station. This station is located in New York, so it would make sense for there to be at least 12.
Wear your rubbers
"Keep your money in your inside pocket. Wear your rubbers. And eat a hot lunch..."
While "rubber" as slang for a condom definitely did exist in the 1950s, I believe it's far more likely Mae is referring to overshoes due to the context, though to be fair, I can't find a source to this being "official slang" besides casual mention in posts like these. Something tells me Mae is not randomly mentioning condoms lol.
A Plain G.I.
Albert: Proud to be a plain G.I.!
Mentioning this because it's faded away from current use and surged in usage most recently at WWII, this is just referring to being a soldier. (Source) Hence, G.I. Joe, if you're old enough to remember that.
Appealing for the Draft
Albert: And that's why he volunteered for...
Men were drafted to join the US armed forces until 1973. (Source)
Jerries
Albert: "Say Mr. Peterson," he cried eagerly, "Do you suppose I can get assigned to the front-line trenches? That way I'll be sure to get one of those dirty jerries..."
"Jerries" is slang for German soldiers and was most popular during WWII. The joke here is that WWII is over at this point - the enemies Conrad would be facing at this time would be the Vietnamese, not the Germans. When Rosie tries to correct him, he just says "whoever's dirty this time!".
2024 equivalent: "Conrad said 'Is there any way I could be placed on Seal Team 6? That way I'll be sure to get that Osama Bin Laden for sure!'" "Albert!" "...Or whoever the terrorist is this time!"
Rosie + Albert's "Origin Stories" for Conrad
Just a few references from Rosie's and Albert's stories in "Healthy Normal American Boy" that may be interesting.
Old Virginie - This may be known as a historical fact for people in Virginia, but Carry Me Back to Old Virginny was popular enough in the state of Virginia that it was the state song starting in 1940. In 1940, the version that became the state song had "Virginia" instead of "Virginny", but people watching the musical would definitely be familiar with the original version as this play was only 20 years later.
Indo-China - An eastern territory that got independence from France claim in 1954, and comprised Cambodia, Laos, and parts of Vietnam. Audiences would have been very aware of what Indochina was - according to Wikipedia, "The events of [Indochina getting independence in 1954 through the Geneva Convention and the political tensions of that between S/N Vietnam and other countries] marked the beginnings of serious United States involvement in Vietnam and the ensuing Vietnam War." (Source) Remember, that's the current war during the events of the play!
Dirty Hong Kong moon - We had a complicated relationship with Hong Kong in the 1950s-60s. Read more here. Though I'm not sure if this is meant to be a mis-insult like when Albert said "dirty Jerries".
A wire to New York
Another Reporter: I'll make sure we've got a wire to New York.
This is almost certainly setting up a telegraph communication to New York, which was still happening (though declining in popularity) by 1960. (Source)
I mean I really feel that girl
Conrad: When I sing about a tree/I really feel that tree!/When I sing about a girl,/I really feel that girl,/I mean I really feel sincere!
This isn't necessarily specific to the 50s or 60s but I think this joke gets missed because it seems so tame today. A huge part of Elvis' appeal was his explicit sex appeal at the time (in the form of - gasp! - hip thrusts!) so he's slipping in accidentally a reference to "feeling up" a girl%20for%20sexual%20pleasure) here. Yeah, that slang started in the 1930s!
Mr. MacAfee's Speech
Just know that this is a lot of great historical references, nothing specific to 1950 - 60.
Ed Sullivan
Ed Sullivan was the nationwide sensation that lead The Ed Sullivan Show, a TV program considered one of the most iconic of all time in US television history. You have to understand just how influential and huge the Ed Sullivan Show was at this time. It's genuinely difficult to think of an equivalent in 2024 - today, people get entertainment from tons of sources on the internet, TV, etc. but in 1960 there were THREE television channels. That was it. THREE. To be fair, there were many, many more radio stations that could deliver information and entertainment, but by 1960 it was a TV nation - as the Library of Congress says, "In 1950 only 9 percent of American households had a television set, but by 1960 the figure had reached 90 percent." The Ed Sullivan Show was well watched and well loved by all of the United States. (And Albert saying that they would appear on Sunday at 8:05 was right, as that's when it aired in real life!)
One reason Ed Sullivan is specifically picked is the absolute bombshell of a privilege to be a normal family on this show beamed in practically every household in the United States. But another is Elvis' relationship with the show. When Elvis finally appeared on the show in 1956, it set a record of the most-viewed TV program ever in the US. In fact, it still holds the record TODAY of having the highest share of TV viewers in all of television history in the US. No other TV program has ever had a higher percentage of people tune in vs. other stations. (I mean, that's helped by the fact that there were only 3 choices, but still!) So yeah - this was a cultural phenomenon that was easy to reference in this show!
Margo out of Shangri-La
Mrs. Peterson: She looks like Margo when they took her out of Shangri-La.
Going to take this one right from that personal website I referenced above!
In the 1937 [movie] "Lost Horizon)" [...] a group of travelers are stuck in a utopia called Shangri-La, somewhere in the Himalayas. One of the residents of Shangri-La is Maria, played by Margo), a Mexican dancer and actress. When the travelers finally escape, Maria insists on going with them. But outside the realm of Shangri-La, her youthful beauty can no longer be maintained and she reverts to her true age, causing her to die and her appearance to transform to the hideously withered, wrinkled features of someone who has lived way beyond a normal life span.
You can watch the movie free with ads here, if you're curious! Also, according to the synopsis, Maria never actually escapes Shangri-La. She just dies and "reverts to her true age". AKA looks very very very decrepit. I'm guessing this is more of an easy thing to misremember and better shorthand, though. See the face at 2 hr 3 minutes in abouts!
Suwannee River
Gloria: Mae, can you hum Suwannee River?
While this is a nice convenient copyright-free tune, it would definitely have been publicly known at the time. It had been sung at least partially by Bing Crosby, on the Honeymooners, etc. in recent years before the musical premiered. Unsure if this is what they were going for, but the original lyrics are racist - no wonder it was Mae's "favorite selection".
Ruby Keeler
(Stage direction) Gloria tap dances as Mrs. Peterson hums gaily. Sort of Ruby Keeler-ish steps with a lot of feet-slapping.
Ruby was a well known actress and dancer in the 1920s-30s (and then later after a break). Here's some footage of her dancing! Interestingly, in her early career she was cast in a musical called Bye, Bye, Bonnie. In a newspaper article review, it seems the plot wasn't very similar to Bye Bye Birdie, though it did involve someone going to jail. (Source)
The Touch System
Mrs. Peterson: I'll find you a typewriter (Exits) Albert: [TO GLORIA] Do you use the touch system? Gloria: Whenever possible.
Albert is just referring to the touch system of typing - basically, not looking at the keyboard while you type. Still relevant today, though not with typewriters, which were standard until the 1980s, so that fits here. Of course, Gloria is of course referring to, uh, something a bit more sensual. (Read: She wants to touch him and not like a friend.)
Kodak Ad
Sullivan: So remember: your surest way to the best in color slides is to insist on the new Kodak! And now, the young man you've all been waiting to see.
Just like media today, the Ed Sullivan Show certainly included ads. This included ad deals where Ed himself would promote a product, kind of like YouTubers do with "This video is sponsored by...". And, as you can guess, one of those products was Kodak cameras and camera related products. Kodak was still a huge brand at the time (there were not cell phone cameras as competition, so it was way more likely your home owned a camera or two), Kodak absolutely was sponsoring the Ed Sullivan show and had been for a few years (Source). Here's an example from the time period. What you may miss about this ad in the musical is that it's not actually advertising a camera! Cameras at the time required physical film be loaded into them, and wouldn't you know it, Kodak released a new high-speed color film in 1959! (I think this may be a coincidence, as Kodak had been selling color film for quite a bit before this) Yet another reference that's right on the nose of the current times (of the time)!
Wear it in good health
Albert: Who let that kid in here? Rosie: I did Albert. Albert: Rosie! Rosie: It's a sort of farewell present to you and Miss Rasputin. Wear it in good health.
Not invented in the 50s by any means, but this phrase really isn't used as much today I think. There's not really a deeper meaning here besides sarcasm that I can find - it's just wishing someone well. Obviously, the sarcasm is dripping here lol.
Dinah Shore
STAGE DIRECTION: ...as Mr. MacAfee throws a tremendous Dinah Shore kiss to the audience.
Dinah Shore was an actress and entertainer that had been popular for years at that point. Super interesting career if you want to give it a read. This is referencing her famous "Dinah Shore kiss" that she would give at the end of her show broadcasts and was a huge part of her brand. Here's an example!
Stay tuned for Part 2! :)
