2024.05.16 23:42 KateGdy Company trying to force me to attend after hours trainings

To give a bit more context:
I’m contracted to work 40h a week. Every week the same hours and days.
From few weeks company is sending me invitations for training which are in my days off. When I declined them, they keep asking me why, what are my plans for those days etc.
I don’t feel like coming up with excuses every single time, as it’s my free personal time.
Obviously it would be paid as overtime. So it’s not the issue. I just feel harassed and stuck in this situation.
Could you tell me, how I stand legally, is there any law I could quote to them. And to stop them from asking me about my personal life.

2024.05.16 23:33 throwAway4Loss Accusations Made Are Completely False

Hello,
A friend of mine was recently accused of a sex crime. We come to find out the story that the accuser told the police was entirely fabricated. The accuser links pieces of their story to evidence that does exist however, it was not used in the nature which it is claimed to be. Also, the police completely misquote things that were said in a call and not the sense that it has to do with context but fully quotes them completely wrong.
The case has moved past the grand jury and is now in the hands of the prosecutor which at first denied a warrant twice. Which then afterwards a formal statement was taken and used to indict the person.
The accused is terrified as it is just something that they, could not , nor would ever do and cannot believe such allegations have been made against them. The story is so far from the truth and slanderous that if it goes to court it could be life ruining.
It is horrible and the accused has been distraught over it the entire time. They fear the ambiguity that comes with court.
As a lawyer, how does one overcome false statements and prove one story from the other? I have little faith in the justice system already for even letting it get this far when the accused has not even given a statement.

2024.05.16 23:24 Kiwifur_ 2012 Honda civic (rocking)

Guys I need some help I’ve gone to a mechanic and sunk $800 into my car already trying to get this issue resolved. I have a 2012 Honda civic with 250k miles on it (majority highway miles) anyway, when I come to a complete stop my car starts to rocks back and fourth. I’ve had him in the shop twice now for this issue, first time being my motor mounts, second being my trans mount and some kind of damaged intake pipe (I believe don’t quote me cause I don’t quite remember what it was called exactly <-) . Point is that at first it would ride smooth for a couple of days and I’ve noticed improvement in other aspects of the car but not this damn rocking. If anyone out here has advice on the matter please let me know as I want to get a little more life out this car before I buy another if possible. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.16 23:22 Thedunker334 Am i the jerk for being mad at my classmates?

I am a 15 year old male and my classmates are complete idiots.
my life has been going downhill for some years now. first my grade became worse, then I had to move with my family to another town and with that lost my 4 best friends.
at my old school my classmates called me names because of my tick (I have Tourette Syndrom).
then I finally made some friends, a boy and a girl in my class who like fantasy stuff like me.
at first things we’re normal, I just ignored my rude classmates and han out with my friends at school. then in 9th grade right after summer vacation my class and one of our parallel classes made a class trip to a hotel (which to be honest looked more like an institute for mentally Ill people).
so just before summer vacations a girl transferred to our class.
the girl had some traumatic experiences and only attended two classes a day.
well my friends became friends with the new girl and so did I.
we’ll returned out she was really weird And did some really weird stuff too.
well at the trip I distanced from my friends which who after the trip I never reallay talked to.
but without me they seem happier anyways. My two friends knew each other since first grade while I transferred just a year ago.
we’ll skip ahead two years from that. my class wasn’t ripping on me anymore and I just did school stuff instead of hanging out with friends at school.
well today I went to the food shop and bought a cup of cacao. when I walked down some stairs I slipped and my cacao fell out of my hands. the cup shattered and the cacao was everywhere On the ground. hen I stood up, I noticed that I had cacao on my fingers and since the cacao just shattered seconds ago and I have a strong stomach, so I simply licked the small drop of cacao of my fingers.
that was a mistake because a classmate saw this and in 15 minutes we’re able to spread the rumor i just liked spilled cacao of the floor. i knew arguing won’t help in any way since the boy who saw this was the most popular boy in our class.
when i sat down, the teacher left the room, after which one of my classmates stood up and threw my water bottle in my face. im not the guy who punches people since I don’t wanna live with the consequences so I just did nothing, after which I just put my water bottle back into my school back. then I realised I took the water bottle of the same classmate that spread the rumor. the classmate then said quote „oh no (my name) touched my water bottle I may get aids if I touch that“
that obviously doesn’t make any sense since I don’t have aids and that not how aids gets transferred but my class screamed in disgust anyways.
after class another classmade told me he „doesn’t tolerate me on this world anymore“
so after school I seriously thought about ending it all, to teach my classmates a lesson. i decided not to, i have a younger sister and I can live with the fought that my sister would be traumatised.
i am actually pretty strong but as I said I don’t go around beating up people.
so now I’m thinking, am I the jerk for wanting to end it because of some stupid bullying or are my classmates the jerks?

2024.05.16 23:12 fanofhistory2029 The Platonic Ideal Life Path

I've recently been reflecting on my efforts at being more productive and started writing some longer form content to help structure my thoughts.
I wrote up the below in the past few days and wanted to share. Perhaps some of you have also found yourself hindered by an ongoing search for the ideal life path vs. just enjoy the journey.
Hope you find this helpful!
Despite your inflated sense of yourself, you are not, amongst all other humans, impervious to being brainwashed. This is a hardwired feature of your mind and a circuit that is operating at all times, if you allow it to do so. You aren’t being brainwashed in the cartoonish mode of being made to act like a chicken or empty your wallet. However, you are being brainwashed nonetheless.
Replace the word “brainwashed” with “influenced” and you may start to see my point. If you read me, you are not a fan of the influencers for stupid people (a la Andrew Tate) but perhaps you have more refined taste (Huberman, Attia, Ferriss, Jocko, Peterson, Newport). If there are any such personalities you are a fan of, I assure you that in your efforts to live a more productive, successful, disciplined life… you have been brainwashed.
I want to focus on how quickly the messages that you hear from these sources transition into “shoulds” that run in the background of your daily self-talk. These sources are an unending stream of great ideas for how you should wake up, how you should work, how you should eat, how you should exercise, how you should have sex, how you should meditate, how you should partake in leisure and so on. Notice that they don’t always come in the form of a statement that says “you should do x.” They may come in the form of “my typical daily routine looks like y”. Either way, your mind is primed and ready to sponge it all up.
If you were but a simple peasant farming in Ye Olde England six hundred years ago, your life was governed by a very rigid set of “shoulds”. There was the Bible, there were social norms, the rules of the king, and so. However, these were still a relatively manageable list of rules that one could live by, and it was not unreasonable to assume that you could mostly stay on the Righteous Path. Fast forward to the algo-influencer age and all bets are off. Open up any platform and within minutes, you’ll be bombarded with more “shoulds” than you can possibly keep in mind at once. This observation comes with no value judgment on the quality of what we are being told, I am only commenting on the volume.
You are wrong if you tell me that you are effective at curating the good stuff that will improve your life from the algo-influencer-Youtube-podcast-x regime. I know you think you are because, as we noted, you are a fan of the high class, refined content. The good stuff. The science backed stuff. Here’s the thing, once a source of information finds some sort of “resonance” with your subconscious, you are going to suck it all right up. All the great stuff you hear will immediately seep into your subconscious and become a constant quiet voice in the back of your mind berating you with a litany of “shoulds.”
Alas, you object - it’s all good stuff. Huberman has me locked onto managing my dopamine levels, Attia has me optimizing my diet, Dr. Zoidberg has me keeping limber, and Cal Newport is showing me how to live a deep life. I want to point out three problems with what is going on here.
Problem #1 - Your mind is not actually asking what end purpose is being served by adopting the idea that you “should” be doing a given thing.
Let’s cue Jocko Willink on this one. I am someone who, for many years, felt it was important to wake up at 4:30am because of… discipline. Why? Well, I must get up early to be up before the enemy and for freedom. I note that discipline is the ultimate meta-”should”. Discipline means getting yourself to do all the “shoulds” on your list. Can anyone tell me what outcome I’m missing out on by not partaking in a daily cold plunge, heat plunge, ice bath, or looking at the sun within 15 minutes of waking up?
Problem #2 - Even if you have a desired end goal, your mind is not doing a rigorous job of assessing whether or not a given “should” will get you there.
Most of us would like more control of our daily schedule in order to have more freedom and flexibility. The grindset types on Youtube, or on X have a common solution for us. I am not likely taking a huge leap in that one “should” you have picked up is something to do with entrepreneurship. Ok, have you really considered whether starting your own business will give you more freedom? Maybe it will… I just suspect you picked up this idea without really looking at the pros and cons.
Problem #3 - Even if you’ve been bequeathed a fantastic, grade A, “should” from someone… you’ve got more than you can handle already.
If a “should” that you heard on Youtube or read in a book resonates for some reason, your mind will take it up and start beaming you subconscious messages to do that thing. Your mind will also happily send you 10 of these at once. Are they contradictory? Who cares? I “should” wake up at 4:30, and I should sleep at least 8 hours with no alarm clock. I should also consider being a night owl creative type, and stay up late to grind if life demands it. Some “shoulds” probably aren’t even really defined to any precision. I should be more driven, more mindful, more dynamic. I genuinely feel all those impulses and can’t even begin to tell you what it would like to actually do them. Mr. Brain has no problem with cognitive dissonance, and will dutifully tell me to live up to all of these.
Let’s now talk about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (as an aside, yes I also feel a “should” to be more religious, spiritual, and penitent). Well, really I want to talk about The Promised Land. I know you… you are the hard driving, disciplined type. You like to punish yourself for not living up to your expectations. Alas, you are on the verge of getting there. If you could just get a few days in a row where you nail all your “shoulds,” it will all fall into place. One perfect day will lead to the next and the next. Then, I’ll have made it. I’ll be in the land of enlightenment (and oh so productive). Fellow pilgrim, I’m right there with you on the Righteous Path.
Wait a second, something feels off. Did I say above that our mind will happily adopt any set of “shoulds” no matter how contradictory or ill-defined they may be? And, did I also say that I’m striving to get to The Promised Land by doing “All the Shoulds”? If The Righteous Path is the road that leads to The Promised Land, I’ve got some bad news for you. You are permanently off The Righteous Path. This, my friend, is why you constantly feel like you are not living up to your expectations. They are impossible - you never had a chance. It’s ok though - Jesus died for your sins and there is still a path to salvation.
Oh, but, I’m not ready for salvation, I want to rock on. Here’s what we’d all prefer to do when faced with that sensation of being off the Path. It’s time to hunker down, and go to war, and GRIND. Don’t tell me I can’t do it all. When fate whispers, “You cannot Withstand The Storm,” the Warrior Whispers, “I am the Storm.” I’m feeling chills (no really, it’s a great quote). That’s how we roll. We man up and get that shit done. Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but if that worked you wouldn’t still be in the market for motivational content. You are still lost… no Youtube video is going to get out of the bottomless deep of the “should.”
Back to Jesus (gasp - you didn’t warn me this would be a borderline sacrilegious article). It’s okay, Jesus is fair game in the algo-world. This is that obnoxious pause point in a self help book where there’s a worksheet page and you are asked to write stuff down. Take 10 minutes and make yourself a list of all the “shoulds” that you are feeling at this point about your life. I’ll help you get going with some prompts: businesses to start, podcasts to create, books to read, daily rituals to adopt, food to eat/not eat, workout routine to start, races to run, people to call, projects to do. You get the idea.
More work for you. Now imagine your perfect day. I mean a day that checks all the boxes. I despise rap, but seek inspiration in imagining the productivity version of the Ice Cube hit, “It was a Good Day.” How would you spend your time? Think about it hour by hour, minute by minute. When do you wake up? What do you do after waking up? How much time do you spend working? What sort of work? What else do you do? Map it all out. Imagine this as a day where you fully control your schedule.
Are you still with me? Probably not. This is too many words for the internet and I’m asking too much of your lazy ass. You should be less lazy. See what I did there? Ok, next step. Map your perfect day onto reality. Take any of the days from the past week where you had real life commitments such as work meetings, errands, childcare and ask yourself how you would map this perfect day onto that reality. Where would the three hours of Cal Newport Deep Work fit? How would you wake up at 4:30am after being up late because your kid was sick or your friend from out of town was visiting?
My point is, of course, obvious. However, don’t underestimate what I am saying. I am not saying that you can’t always have your perfect day. I am saying you can never have the perfect day. You are imposing unrealistic expectations upon reality. This conflict has always existed and you had two choices: 1) Dig deeper and muscle through because you are failing as a person to be sufficiently disciplined, or 2) Accept that your “shoulds” were always impossible to fully satisfy, and try something different.
Here’s the last thing I want you to do for now. Go back to your “should” list from the first step and take a critical eye. I give you permission to cross out as many as you’d like. If you are unsure before you cross it out, ask yourself: Where did this idea come from? Does it help me lead a happier life? Do I even agree with the premise? When in doubt, cross it out and feel the freedom.
I’ll leave you with one last message - you are probably doing just fine. Are there improvements you can make in your life? Sure, we all can. However, you aren’t failing, you aren’t straying from The Righteous Path, and there is no Promised Land. There’s just the lower case p path, and that is alright.

2024.05.16 23:06 Walk1000Miles HH Available Resources

🛠 UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚒️

The information detailed in this narrative is undergoing review and in the process of being updated.
Our philosophy within the SSDI_SSI Subreddit is to share our experiences to try to assist others. It does not necessarily mean that any shared experience will be a duplicate of your current experiences or outcomes.
Sometimes?
Just knowing that someone else has made it through similar difficult processes may make a huge difference to the stress you are currently (or soon will be) experiencing.
While I was going through some really rough times? I kept notes regarding some of the issues I was having, the numerous helpful resources I came across, and the search techniques I utilized.
Some of the resources I came across had nothing to do with a specific issue that I was experiencing.
However? If I thought the resources could be:
■ helpful to others? ■ relevant?
■ informative? ■ significant?
I kept track just in case the resources could be of assistance to others.
I gathered all of the notes / links I had collected and created this narrative through the years.
These resources are relative to people who live in the USA.
Although other countries may have such programs, they would (most likely) not share the same links.
You could utilize similar techniques (not the exact same links found here) to search for helpful resources in your community, perhaps.
In the USA? If you have a SmartPhone or a computer? You can actually call / locate sites that offer assistance and / or let your fingers do the walking!

This is a living document and will be changed as needed.

In your browser, type your zip code, the word "free" (if needed), and the particular assistance that you need.
12345 affordable housing 12345 eye glasses / lens
12345 electricity assistance 12345 therapy
12345 housing 12345 transportation
12345 dental care 12345 paratransit services
You get the idea!
You can use different terminology during your search.
I have found that each city / state is different throughout the USA.
You never know what your community has already established for people who need help.
You will find that some communities offer more assistance than others.
If you don't have a SmartPhone or a computer?
Go to the library. There are all kinds of resources there - most of which are free.
While there? Pick up some books!!

Always keep looking for solutions.

Reach out to others.
We are a community on Reddit - created to help each other.
Don't give up!
No matter what!
I've compiled a list of helpful information / sites that I add to periodically. Some may help you now / some may not (but could nevertheless provide assistance in the future).
It's always good to know about these resources in case you ever need them.
Programs / headings are in alphabetical order:

Children

There are organizations specifically geared towards the needs of children. A few are detailed below.
National Diaper Network.

US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrtion Services - Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) - WIC Eligibility Requirements.

Disability Eligibility Requirements

If you or a loved one are 💯% disabled? You should consider applying for SSA disability benefits.
All SSA disability programs have the same criteria in regards to eligibility. If unable to work because of a medical / psychological condition, you are eligible for SSA disability benefits.

■ Unable to work.
■ Have a disability that will last for at least a year or end in your death.
We pay disability benefits to people who can't work because they have a medical condition that's expected to last at least one year or result in death. Federal law requires this very strict definition of disability. While some programs give money to people with partial disability or short-term disability, we do not.
If you have not already done so? Sign up for mySocialSecurity, with the ability to provide secure online access to your current earnings record and history. Information regarding your retirement, disability, and any survivor benefits that you and your family may be eligible for will also be accessible. Also? We decided we needed to move when we noticed that the community we lived in did not provide the support we needed to have a better life.
We wanted to move to a location that offered exposure to better healthcare, health insurance, housing and paratransit services.
So?
Make a list of items that are important to you and your family. Rank them in order of importance.
Remember? Each community is different and offers different services.
Each jurisdiction has a Chamber of Commerce page or other similar resource that lists issues you might be interested in.
I searched the internet, made lists, and came up with the following resources (presented in alphabetical order) that were important to our family. You and your family might have other criteria.

(1) Helping Hands

Helping Hands Action Group monitors the benefits landscape for updates and changes to policies and programs. Depending on the jurisdiction? They offer transportation and other services. You should check 12345 Helping Hands in your area.
Check out the Helping Hands Action Group - click here.

(2) Medicaid Expansion

The Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Medicaid expansion expanded Medicaid coverage to nearly all adults with incomes up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level ($20,783 for an individual in 2024) and provided states with an enhanced federal matching rate (FMAP) for their expansion populations.
To date, 41 states (including DC) have adopted the Medicaid expansion and 10 states have not adopted the expansion. Current status for each state is based on KFF tracking and analysis of state expansion activity.
Check out the Status of State Medicaid Expansion Decisions: Interactive Map - click here.

(3) Paratransit / Transportation

Another thing you should consider adding to the list? Check to see what type of transportation services are offered.
You never have to worry about parking, blizzards, running out of fuel or parking meter money, taffic or anything else that would be a hindrance.
If your community has bus routes? You might have paratransit services available to you.
The fair is reasonable (much better than ubers, taxis or something else).
You do not need to be in a wheelchair for paratransit services.
The driver will walk you to and from the door of the building (your home and the appointment and vice versa).
You can use the services for anything you want to, such as vists to:
beauty parlors parks
community events physical therapy
library visits school events
medical appts shopping excursions
movies veterinarian appts
museums volunteer work
Anything you can think of - it is such a blessing.
I have lived in areas that had paratransit and areas that did not offer paratransit. It makes a huge difference in your sense of independence to be able to attend appointments and go places you need to. Without the interference of worrying about reliable transportation.

(4) Social Security Taxes

Moving to a state where they do not charge social security taxes dramatically increased our overall income. If you are interested in moving to states that do not require taxes on SSA benefits?
Check out 39 states that do not tax Social Security benefits - click here. Consider moving. It saved us a lot of money every single month.

2024.05.16 22:45 Ambitious_Phrase8237 PC "clean up"/"tune ups"

I'm an in home PC DA and a lot of times I get clients that want their PCs "tuned up" or "cleaned up". I put that in quotes because most of the time their computers seem totally fine. They're not running slow, there's hardly any programs installed or running and barely any files even. I'll usually just run a webroot scan on MRI and clear temp files but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do. If their PC is running slow I'll try to see if there's a ton of programs running that's causing it or if it's only got 4gb of ram on Windows 10/11. Usually it ends up just being age or poor specs. I'm pretty good with computers since I've messed with them my whole life but I've never had any proper education on the subject. My initial training for PC DA was also practically non-existent.
TL-DR: I'm not sure what to do for "tune ups"/"clean ups" or if I'm doing enough.

2024.05.16 22:39 ApartDescription8673 What do you think happened before and during the 2489 spaceship accident? I want to write a short story about it.

This is about the accident in 2489 of which Ulala was the sole survivor. I want it to end with Jaguar's quotes from the original game, "I found the last survivor from the spaceship accident! You'll be safe now." I have a hunch that Chief Blank was behind it, but for the life of me I can't think of any ideas for how the plot should go, especially leading up to and during the accident itself. If you could help in any way, I'd appreciate it!

2024.05.16 22:39 corruptable 63M SD seeking SB in Las Vegas, NV

I knew I was getting more mature when mailings from AARP started asking if I still feel okay
I kid, but my life insurance company has stopped sending Christmas cards.
I don't feel old, but I keep hearing my favorite songs playing in elevators.
Oh, you didn't come here for the monologue?
I'm 63, permanently separated, and operate my business from Las Vegas. I am relaxed, friendly, and occasionally entertaining. I am ambitious and hard working. I have a highly questionable sense of humor. I know this, because whether it is actually humor is frequently questioned.
I am looking for a mutually beneficial friendship that is authentic and enjoyable for both of us. I am seeking a smart, organized and ambitious woman for an arrangement grounded in affection. In case it isn't obvious, what I seek is something with a bit more gravitas than an occasional "let's get together and party." My idea of an ideal arrangement is one that looks a lot like a caring relationship, with communication, dates, and a lot of laughs, if you can tolerate my sense of humor.
I will take you seriously as a woman, and I will ask you do the same for me, hopefully as a man. Goals.
I am in Las Vegas, and it would be helpful to this endeavor if you are too, or travel here regularly. I heard they have gambling and sports activities here, so it is not a terrible place to visit.
If you're wondering what I like to do, I made this handy list: cook together, go to Red Rock Canyon for a drive and hike, watch a movie, hit up a casino, go shooting, go to a Raiders game, listen to some music, look at some art, or go on a photo shoot out and about somewhere.
Am I handsome? Well, when I was born, the doctor held me up by my feet and slapped my parents.
I went to a shrink once, I said, "Doc, I feel like I'm ugly. What should I do?" He made me lie on the couch face down.
But I clean up well.
And let me leave you with this quote: "The main problem with the Internet is that things are not always exactly as they appear." -Abraham Lincoln

2024.05.16 22:24 Zirnreklis Asimov and Kepler

I hope it is okay to ask this in this forum.
So, in Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somnium_(novel)) ) on Kepler's Somnium it says that " Isaac Asimov have referred to it as one of the earliest works of science fiction" with the source cited as "Isaac Asimov presents the best science fiction of 19th century." I checked the work and, yes in introductions Asimov speaks of Somnium, but he doesn't say that he would consider it the first science fiction work. If anything, in later pages he is agreeable to the fact that Shelleys Frankenstein is THE first true science fiction work.
What I need to understand is - did he ever called Keplers Somnium as the first science fiction work (vs the first TRUE science fiction work) , and if yes, then where?
Here I will give the part from "Isaac Asimov presents the best science fiction of 19th century." that is puzzling:
the German astronomer, Johann Kepler, wrote a tale called Somnium, published (posthumously) in 1634, about fifteen centuries after True History. Here, too, we have a protagonist who finds himself on the moon (carried there by spirits, this time). Again we have a world populated by strange and monstrous forms of life. The crucial difference here, though, is that Kepler gave the moon a two-week-long day and a two-week-long night, which is an astronomical fact. It was the first intrusion of authentic observation into what would otherwise be a sheer work of fantasy. That, too, is not enough. The advance and retreat of sunlight on the moon is something that is not human. It required neither science nor technology to be understood; merely sensibly directed eyesight. True science fiction deals with human science, with the continuing advance of knowledge, with the continuing ability of human beings to make themselves better understand the universe and even to alter some parts of it for their own comfort and security by the ingenuity of their ideas. And if that is so, then science fiction becomes quite a modem phenomenon and cannot claim the respectability of age. [end quote] (bolding mine)
But also on SF wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction#cite_ref-33 there is another source where he talks? about this topic: Asimov, Isaac (1977). The Beginning and the End. New York: Doubleday. ISBN 978-0-385-13088-2. That I cannot find anywhere - pdf that is not a physical book.

2024.05.16 22:01 makeuploverrr78 Let me introduce you to Harrison Butker, the man, myth and misogynist…

On today’s episode of Catholic Shenanigans I introduce you to Harrison Butkiss (whoops did I say that?) when he’s not slipping and falling on the football field he’s giving half ass commencement speeches at various colleges. His most recent one has resulted in a massive scandal. Before we delve into this sordid tale let me introduce you to some of his hobbies. Crushing his wife’s career and having children… Btw his wife is an extremely accomplished woman who holds a degree in computer science and Spanish.
Let’s go back to the speech in it he hits the trifecta of Catholic talking points, he manages to be anti LGBTQ, rail against IVF and tells women their lives don’t begin until they have babies. (Hold on I thought life began at conception…it’s not to late for an abortion for me!!)
The part that irritates me the most is when he says “embrace your roles as homemakers” directing this comment at women. It’s so inappropriate to say at a college graduation. What’s worse is his mother holds a masters degree and works in oncology at Emory University. He’s crapping on all accomplished women an boiling all of us down to our reproductive abilities and domestic use.
If we look at his instagram we can see he has virtually no pictures of his family or wife and the entire page is made up of pictures of him in carefully manicured suits with bible verses in the caption. Unlike most NFL stars who take time to appreciate their partners Butkiss does not even acknowledge the existence of Isabelle his most accomplished wife.
The only time he speaks about his wife is when he’s praising her for embracing her role as a baby machine and human laundry mat. In the next breath he attempts to be cleaver and works in a Taylor Swift quote while referring to yet another accomplished woman as “my teammates girlfriend” and smirks while doing it. Nothing illustrates the distain that he holds for women like this quote. Almost as if to say Taylor would be no one without Travis and she is defined by her relationship.
It’s good that this kind of rhetoric is making it to the mainstream. I want everyone to see what theses so called “traditional Catholics” are about..rewinding time to a day when women couldn’t buy houses, hold property or open a line of credit….

2024.05.16 21:30 MarvelsGrantMan136 Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ - Review Thread

Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megapolis’ - Review Thread
Reviews:
Variety (50):
To call this garish, idea-bloated monstrosity a mere “fable” is to grossly undersell the project’s expansive insights into art, life and legacy.
Hollywood Reporter (60):
It’s windy and overstuffed, frequently baffling and way too talky, quoting Hamlet and The Tempest, Marcus Aurelius and Petrarch, ruminating on time, consciousness and power to a degree that becomes ponderous. But it’s also often amusing, playful, visually dazzling and illuminated by a touching hope for humanity.
Deadline:
Megalopolis represents a rare kind of event movie that reinvents the possibilities of cinema to the extent that, halfway through, there’s a very audacious gimmick that tears down the fourth wall in ways younger filmmakers can only dream of. Coppola breaks many of the cardinal rules of filmmaking in the film’s 138 minutes but it upholds the most important one: it is never, ever boring, and it will inspire just as many artists as the audiences it will alienate.
IndieWire (B+):
With “Megalopolis,” he crams 85 years worth of artistic reverence and romantic love into a clunky, garish, and transcendently sincere manifesto about the role of an artist at the end of an empire. It doesn’t just speak to Coppola’s philosophy, it embodies it to its bones. To quote one of the sharper non-sequiturs from a script that’s swimming in them: “When we leap into the unknown, we prove that we are free.”
The Guardian (2/5):
Francis Ford Coppola’s question – can the US empire last forever? – may be valid but flashes of humour cannot rescue this conspiracy thriller from awful acting and dull effects
LA Times:
In a larger sense, Coppola has moved from the cynicism of his greatest films like “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now” — so much power doing so much corrupting — and into something that could fairly be called utopian. I’m not sure if that’s what I want from him as an artist, but I thrill to his unbowed aspiration. He’s not going out with something tame and manicured, but an overstuffed, vigorous, seething story about the roots of fascism that only an uncharitable viewer would call a catastrophe. Rather, it feels like a city. It may be the most radical film he’s ever done. He dedicates it to his late wife, who would have smiled at the evidence of her husband still doing his thing 45 years later.
Rolling Stone (80):
Say what you will about this grand gesture at filtering Edward Gibbon’s history lessons through a lens darkly, it is exactly the movie that Coppola set out to make — uncompromising, uniquely intellectual, unabashedly romantic (upper-case and lower-case R), broadly satirical yet remarkably sincere about wanting not just brave new worlds but better ones.
Vanity Fair:
Megalopolis is too confused a film to make a truly odious or dangerous point. (Though the ending of the Vesta plotline is somewhat alarming.) This is the junkiest of junk-drawer movies, a slapped together hash of Coppola’s many disparate inspirations.
The Telegraph (80):
Aubrey Plaza is fantastic in this full-body sensory bath movie which follows a struggle for power among the elites of New Rome.
Screen Daily (40):
But the amount of stray ideas and themes that are introduced, then abandoned — such as the fact that Cesar has the ability to stop time — leave Megalopolis feeling like an unwieldy mess. Cesar and Cicero’s showdown over New Rome is handled in terribly disjointed ways, and the attempts by supporting characters to grasp power add to the picture’s cluttered construction. In recent years, few auteurs have dreamed as boldly as Coppola has with this film, but some visions, as Megalopolis’ characters discover, are doomed to failure.
The Wrap:
After four decades in the making, “Megalopolis” plays as a frustrating and paradoxical affair. The film is expertly assembled and sleepily directed all at once; it wows with its imagination and erudition all while leaving you little more than bemused.
Collider (4/10):
Much like the city being built in the film, it’s all more interesting in theory than it ever is in actuality. Now that we will all have the chance to take it in for ourselves, the greatest revelation is that there just isn’t that much there to see.
Written and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola:
An accident destroys a decaying metropolis called New Rome. Cesar Catilina, an idealist architect with the power to control time, aims to rebuild it as a sustainable utopia, while his opposition, corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero, remains committed to a regressive status quo. Torn between them is Franklyn's socialite daughter, Julia, who, tired of the influence she inherited, searches for her life's meaning.

2024.05.16 21:18 Reasonable_Brick_734 Can I get out of my car debt or am I stuck?

BIGGEST REGRET OF MY LIFE: In July 2021 I decided it was a good idea to finance a "like-new" vehicle from the dealership. It's a 2021 model with roughly 18,000 KM, $317 bi-weekly for 7 years at 6.99%, which takes the selling price of $34,389 to a nice $58,298 total with all the additional fees. I really did think it was a good idea at the time and I could afford the payments including insurance and other expenses. For whatever reason I was set on getting this car, and didn't really think about possible financial and life changes after strapping myself down with the car.
While I can still afford the payments for now, I'll be starting college full time and will no longer be making the money I am now. I'm closing in on 2 years with this vehicle and I still owe around $36,600 and the best quote I've gotten for selling value (which is dropping faster than my balance) is $22,675 with AutoTrader. Luckily I live with my parents, but I'm super stressed about starting school and jumping from a full time consistent pay job to part-time work wherever it may be.
I should also mention that i do have a little over $4k available if needed. Any advice on what to do? Do I have to deal with this until i owe significantly less or can I do something now?

2024.05.16 21:15 Hot_Boss577 Nietzsche quote of eternal recurrence

Hi, does someone know a good quote from Nietzsche that cover his idea of eternal recurrence? I want to open an essay that talks about how there is certain repetition in life with one of his quotes.

2024.05.16 20:54 BeautifulBees333 How can I strongly but firmly set a boundary with a work friend?

I (25f - have Bpd and I struggle with boundaries and kind communication as well as black/white thinking) have a work friend (31f) we have worked together on the same team for a few years now and right off the bat we were drawn to each other and chatted and hung out because we had interests in common.
Over the course of the last few years, this friend has tried creating a new persona for themselves. I am all for reinventing yourself or finding more confidence or trying out different interests - and I try to be as supportive as possible when my friends are growing or changing. However, this persona put on by this friend is only ever presented to me. Often referred to her as her “villain era” etc., constantly sending me quotes and images of memes about her being this sort of aggressive, femme fatale Maneater, etc. Which I would be fully in support of, if it didn’t seem so contradictory to how she presents herself to me face-to-face, or to the rest of the world.
She also constantly refer to herself as a girls girl, but will gossip about other women behind their backs, has no other female friends and will backhandedly rubs things that bother me in my face on a regular basis, but in such minor ways, it’s hard to call her out for them. I have a disability and there’s certain things I can’t do and I’ve been asked to not be sent certain content when she is doing those things, she can post whatever she wants, but I don’t want it sent to me directly. And she will continuously do so despite me resetting that boundary over and over again.
For some context here: she comes from a relatively conservative family (as in strict parents) and is a little bit overweight and has always been very self-conscious about those things. SHe has never been in a relationship or anything like that. It’s a little difficult for us to understand each other in certain ways because I am the total opposite and I’m not in the dating world. I married the first person I ever dated and still am married. I try to be fully supportive of her dating life and her experiences while she rags on marriage and shits on it all the time. Whenever she tells me stories about her dating life or life is exaggerated to the 10th°. About how she sleeping with peoples husbands or the all these men are chasing her or she’s so promiscuous and so evil that she just could never fathom settling down, or she went to the prestigious university that I know she did not actually attend etc. etc. all of these stories either seem fictitious or extremely embellished because I know for a fact her life is not actually like this on a regular basis because we live next-door to each other.
And this is become every single day - day and day out and I am always trying to be kind and supportive so I’m always just like “oh that’s great or cool” but I have only so much emotional bandwith left for some thing that I know isn’t true and she was asked directly about a certain experience - she will not keep her story the same when we are around other people. She only presents this sort of person to me and it feels a very emotionally draining and I don’t know how to approach it. Especially because some of the things like backhanded comments about marriage or embellished date stories seem so minor It feels frustrating to try to call them out because they are always brushed off.
Another thing she does is continually tries to push a persona on me that I do not feel is my truth. We have a lot of things in common, which is initially why we became friends, but she does not like anyone being similar to her, and if I like anything that similar to her, she will try to “win” very passive aggressively - she likes XY or Z better than I do, or sending me tons of content, saying that this is how she views me or this reminded her of me when it is the opposite of what my personality and interests are like and even my husband said “it seems like she doesn’t want you to be like her at all and she’s trying to turn you into who she wants you to be”
I struggle a little bit with social cues and approaching things directly or too much of a people pleaser away. Should I even address this with her? I cannot end this friendship because I really need this job and we have to work in the same place and she is very very very sensitive to rejection. But she contacts me on almost every platform every single day, and any slight change in my tone is perceived as rejection by her.
TLDR: I have a friend who is also a coworker that is pretty insecure and is creating false narratives about her own life to get validation through me because I will only be kind and things are so minor that I feel struggle calling her out for them. Not to mention it could severely fuck up my work life. But the passive aggression and lack of genuineness at all is emotionally draining me.

2024.05.16 20:53 VVVEEE42 I miss you DaDa

Your absense has gone through me Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color. W. S. Merwin
Here is a quote that explains my deep sorrow, while simultaneously reminding me of the melancholic beauty of losing a parent. I hold pieces of him and I will continue to share him with the people I encounter throughout my life, whether that be through telling his story or just sharing a smile with a stranger.
I have just graduated college. I went through 3 years of losing him while in school, yet didn’t even come to terms with it until a month before he was going to pass. Good fortune to all of those who understand the pain. Quite often I feel alone, especially while I silently cried on graduation day…the day that was supposed to be one of the best days of my life. May us all continue to spread the joy and love of our parents in our own lives, even the parents that hurt us were once joyous children once.
