2024.05.14 04:56 howhow326 Eve Stellar Blade is not sexy (and ranting about the Bayonetta allegations)

Before we start, allow me to lay all my cards onto the table: No, this is not me bashing Stellar Blade, just Eve's character (or lack there of). No, this is not going to be a "Culture War" fest or whatever, go find a Marvel movie to complain about. Yes, I am a Bayonetta stan. No, I did not play the game, but I've watched playthroughs and I'm not talking about gameplay anyway. Ok?
So Eve Stellar Blade is the new It girl that's been causing a stir with her "sexy" boobs and butt and it's all talk of the town and la de da. There's people saying she's a "fighting fuckdoll trope", there's men putting her on their anti woke pedstal and saying she's the chosen one that's going restore the world back to the good old days and kill the left like Sydney Sweetie's chest or whatever, and everything in between.
Well I, the local contrarian, have chosen the position to say she's barely sexy at all. Now, is she sexualized, are her developers pushing her into sex symbol status? Yes, that comes with the territory of her defult clothes being Ned Flanders Ski suit and her unlockable outfits including pin up girl cosplay. But is Eve Stellar Blade sexy? The answer is no and here's why:
1) We've seen this before
Oh boy, a woman in spandex so tight she almost looks like she's wearing nothing at all! There's only like 100 other female characters who do that!!
Eve Stellar Blade needs to fire her wardrobe manager because her design is boring AF, just the tried and true Si-Fi spandex that every other girl has worn before. Sad thing is, her unlockable outfits that give her a cute, baggy jacket make her one million times more appealing than the sexy outfit version of cardbord box that she's wearing.
2) She has zero personality
So the worst part of this whole culture war surrounding Eve Stellar Blade is I've been seeing people compare her to Bayonetta and like, first of all, keep the queen's name out your mouth. She's sleeping.
Second of all, forgive my tone but Bayonetta cannot be compared to any old raggedy trick. She is Bayonetta . Everything about her, from her clothes, to her hair, to her personality, to her name , it all demands you pay attention to her. Bayonetta is a stripper dominatrix witch with the personality to match. There has never been a leading lady in gaming like her before, and there most likely won't be another after her. No. Comparison. But even if there was a new girl that tried to take the queen's throne, it ain't Even Steven Blonde.
Quick question, type one quote, something iconic that came from Eve Stellar Blade's mouth. Cuz I can think of several from Bayonetta, byt I'll wait.
Back on track, Sexy is more than just your looks, it's how you carry yourself. You think the reason why all the girlies are thirsting after corpse man from Fallout is because they have a no nose fetish??? No!!! It's because that guy is charming and endlessly confident. Bayonetta is charming, endlessly confident, and the baddest bitch of every room she ever walked into.
What does Even Stellar Blade do, other than rely on her looks to secure anti wokers? I'll tell you what, nothing!! She has zero personality, zero charisma, zero prescence, her aesthetic is looking like an airbrushed Korean model in Spandex, and her greatest assets aretried and true gainaxing that's been in every game ever! Yall are comparing this girl to Bayonetta when Mother brought you disappearing clothes AND monstergirls? I'd ask you to raise your standards, but worshipping Even Steven requires you not have any anyway.

TL;DR

Eve Stellar Blade is a bitch and Bayonetta's son. She is also the J Lo of video game girls.

2024.05.14 03:34 IntentionalChaos214 We made my ex's live in girlfriend think he was a gay drag queen.

I am now older (43f) and wiser and far more subtle in my petty revenge ...but, at this time? I was younger (21) angry, petty, spurred on my an equally petty friend (22f then), and he deserved it.
I had a get together for Halloween with a few friends. It was the usual early 20s social situation with drinks, cards and tequila shots. (I know... I know.)
A guy I had previously had a fling with (truly nothing serious--he was just tall, cute as all hell and had adorable dimples but our personalities didn't mesh) was invited as a friend. No big deal.
Card game turned into Texas Hold Em and bizarre dares after you were out of poker chips. My "ex" was losing BADLY. What started as us daring him to strip somehow escalated to him running outside, nude and in 2 feet of snow, to the pond behind the apartment buildings to acquire a cup of water... and then escalated to him going, in VERY sloppy drag, to the grocery store to buy an eggplant, lube, and condoms.
Now... this is all ridiculous already. (Tequila is a bad decision, kids!) A truly memorable but insane night that can ONLY be survived or created in your early 20s.
My friend (who spurred me on) and him began flirting and things escalated a bit between them. There were photos of him in drag taken, and photos of him with my friend as well.
They made plans to see a movie a couple days later after a few calls...
He never showed up and then ghosted her.
Could we have blown it off and moved on?
Absolutely.
Did we?
Hell freaking no.
We did a bit of online stalking and found out he not only HAD A GIRLFRIEND but was LIVING with her! (Where do these people find the time for this... and how do you NOT ask questions when your man doesn't come home?!)
We hatched a plan.
We took the photos and printed them... of him in drag flirting with my friend, nude with the cup, and doing lap dances on guys in drag.
We sent them, 1 by 1 in an order telling a story... every other day... by mail... to his girlfriend.
Did we stop there?
HELL NO.
We signed him up for drag clothing catalogs and sex toys created especially for gay men. We sent him about $200 worth of the most bizarre "eggplant" items we could find including straws, a hat that sort of resembled a penis shaped Pope hat, etc.
After 2 weeks of those packages... that we made sure would be delivered when HE was gone and SHE was home (but addressed to him and, in quotes, his goofy name from that night) we did 1 more thing...
20 lbs of the most powder fine glitter we could find in a glitter bomb.
She dumped him within a month... and he's a cheater to this day in his relationships.
The lesson?
Don't cheat... and don't piss off 2 petty women at the same time.

The Mad Woman in The Attic: WAOLOM, mad woman, Jane Eyre and the Eras tour WAOLOM visuals
Taylor is now repeatedly drawing us back to lesbian and queer poetry and literature, which consistently has themes of madness, sickness, and suppression. I feel that she is telling us over and over that she is sick from closeting, and she can't take it anymore.
When I saw the WAOLOM visuals for Eras tour, I thought Taylor is meant to be in an attic. I've come across 'The Mad Woman in the Attic' by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar before, but I have never read it all the way through. I believe Taylor is directly referencing this book, and Jane Eyre, to inform us all that she resonates with this story as a queer woman, and that she is stuck in her own attic - her closeted life - and she wants to burn it all down (with Karma, imho).
The WAOLOM visuals

To me, this house either looks like the Lovers House or her childhood home - or it represents both, amalgamated. The reason I'm drawn to the Lovers House is because of the very obvious triangular imagery as we zoom in, showing her in the attic. She is also using a lot of mirrored images, something that's important when considering The Mad Woman in the Attic. However, it's also possible the Lovers house is drawn from her childhood home, which I have no doubt has been theorised before. Another alternative is through suppressed intergenerational trauma, Taylor is realising themes of her childhood home have been bleeding into her work.
The two houses for reference

The Mad Woman in the Attic
WAOLOM is directly related to mad woman, made very clear during the Eras tour (if it wasn’t already!) by the imagery.
Taylor is in the attic, the mad woman in the attic, which is also the title of a book by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar analysing Victorian literature through the lense of Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë), and it's worth noting Taylor repeatedly makes references to Jane Eyre throughout Folklore and within mad woman. In Jane Eyre, Bertha Mason is locked in an attic by her husband Mr Rochester, and in the mad woman in the attic, Gilbert and Gubar use this as a frame of analysis to explore madness and angelicness in the works of Victorian women authors from a feminist perspective. The book examines work from Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Christina Rossetti. What do all of these women have in common, beyond being literary authors? They’re all rumoured, or essentially confirmed (in the case of Christina Rossetti and Emily Dickinson) of being queer, particularly lesbian. It is a very key and formative piece of feminist literature.
The premise of the book is the authors explore how women writers were forced to make the women in their books one of two things: angel, or monster. They argue this is imposed by a “reductionist, patriachal view of women’s roles”; they have, from what I understand, received some critisism for not saying the quiet part out loud here: under cisheteronormative patriachy, women are defined in relation to, by and for men – - and so lesbians and lesbian identity is alienated, hidden, erased. The book does not make the obvious connection here - these writers were forced to closet themselves for their own protection in Victorian society. Gilbert and Gubar draw on what Virginia Woolf said for their argument: “[women writers] must "kill the aesthetic ideal through which they themselves have been 'killed' into art". Let’s not forget here, the connections between WAOLOM and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, posts on this sub with this theory here from u/throw_ra878, here from u/slejeunesse and here from u/AliceStanleyJr. Gilbert and Gubar do argue that men originally set up the dichotomy of female characters as either pure, virginal, angelic or rebelillious, mad, ‘hysterical’. A direct quote that jumped out from me from the Preface is “for just as women have been repeatedly defined by male authors, they seem in reaction to have found it necessary to act out male metaphors in their own texts, as if trying to understand their impliciations.” Indeed.
Crucially, the book describes “a female schizophrenia of authorship” or a “split”: as a representation of themselves, authors would write, process and act out their own suppressed nature and emotions through the process of ‘employed mirrors’; and thus create the image of the mad woman. A direct quote: "these madwomen emerge "over and over again from the mirrors women writers hold up both to their own natures and to their own visions of nature,"..."they appear from a silence in which neither [they] nor [their] author[s] can continue to acquiesce"". The book fails to really dig into this silence: the silence, and the common nature, is that of holding a queer or lesbian identity, and all of these women were forced to suppress it. This draws me to the lesbian memoir from Glennon Doyle, Untamed, in which she talks of how suppressing your true, queer self leads to sickness and ill-health, including mental health issues, and Taylor has links to this book too - she has credited it as being a "huge help" during 2020.
I will say, it is hard to miss what Gilbert and Gubar are getting at, especially is queer, or even only familiar with just two or three of these authors work (which we know Taylor is); it's natural to ascertain that what these women were hiding was their queerness, and this is specifically a consequence of cisheteronormative society. It is also a widely discussed critisism.
I can’t think why Taylor could be drawing from a text like this…
mad woman and Jane Eyre
A lot of Folklore is littered with references to Jane Eyre, that lots of people have noticed. A really good summary of all the references in Folklore can be found here from @/Karisma Takhar on medium. Here is what they wrote about man woman and references to Jane Eyre
"The Jaye Eyre references continue in ‘mad woman’, the track title a reference to who the literary world now refers to as the ‘Madwoman in the Attic’ thanks to Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar. On Jane and Mr Rochester’s wedding day, it is revealed the latter is married to Bertha Mason, whose mental health deteriorated rapidly after the wedding. Mr Rochester decides to lock his wife away in the attic of their home, leaving Grace Poole to care for her, though Grace’s drinking occasionally leads Bertha to escape and roam the hallways. She rips Jane’s wedding veil in half the night before the wedding, an incident Mr Rochester blames on one of maids. When Mr Rochester formally introduces his wife to Jane, she ‘scratched and growled like some strange animal’; Taylor makes similar statements in the song, likening the ‘mad woman’ to both a scorpian and a bear in its defence."
I think this makes it incredibly likely Taylor is not just drawing from Jane Eyre but she is aware of how her sub-conscious suppressed is spilling out into her work, and she is choosing to deliberately make this bigger and louder.
I think the strongest links to this theory are 1989 onwards, which I believe is partly linked to Karma the lost album, the album I do believe is going to 'burn it all down' in order for Taylor to rebuild as an artist who is out and proudly queer.
Here are some lyrics which link to this theme of the 'mad woman, with themes of madness, craziness, rebellion and hysteria - and a process of ‘splitting’ in Taylor’s work, where her suppressed desires come through in her lyrics, leading to consistent themes of madness:
· Treachourous (Red): "This slope is treacherous, this path is reckless, this slope is treacherous, and I, I, I like it"
· Say Don’t Go (1989): “the waiting is a sadness, fading into madness, oh no, oh no, it won't stop, i'm standin' on a tightrope alone, I hold my breath a little bit longer, halfway out the door, but it won't close
· I Did Something Bad (Reputation): "I never trust a narcissist, but they love me, so I play 'em like a violin, and I make it look oh so easy, 'Cause for every lie I tell them, they tell me three, this is how the world works" / "I can feel the flames on my skin, crimson red paint on my lips, if a man talks shit, then I owe him nothing, I don't regret it one bit, 'cause he had it comingThey say I did something bad, then why's it feel so good?" / "And I let them think they saved me" / "You gotta leave before you get left" / "They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one, they got their pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons, they're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one, so light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up), light me up, go ahead and light me up (light me up)"
· Look What You Made Me Do (Reputation): "But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time, honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time, I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined, I check it once, then I check it twice" / "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me, I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams"
· End Game (Reputation): "“I hit you like, "Bang", we tried to forget it, but we just couldn't, and I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em, reputation precedes me, they told you I'm crazy
· Getaway Car (Reputation): "It was the best of times, the worst of crimes, I struck a match and blew your mind, but I didn't mean it, and you didn't see it, The ties were black, the lies were white, In shades of gray in candlelight, I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason, "X" marks the spot where we fell apart, he poisoned the well, I was lyin' to myself, I knew it from the first Old Fashioned, we were cursed, we never had a shotgun shot in the dark" / "There were sirens in the beat of your heart, should've known I'd be the first to leave, think about the place where you first met me, in a getaway car, no, they never get far, no, nothin' good starts in a getaway car, It was the great escape, the prison break, the light of freedom on my face, but you weren't thinkin' and I was just drinkin', while he was runnin' after us, I was screamin', "Go, go, go!", but with three of us, honey, it's a sideshow, and a circus ain't a love story, and now we're both sorry", "We were jet-set, Bonnie and Clyde, until I switched to the other side, to the other side, it's no surprise I turned you in, 'Cause us traitors never win"
· The Man (Lover): “they paint me out to be bad, so it's okay that I'm mad, I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man (you know that), and I'm so sick of them coming at me again (coming at me again)” “I’m so sick” is repeated 8 times, which just so happens to be the number representing infinity.
· The Archer (Lover): "Combat, I'm ready for combat, I say I don't want that, but what if I do? 'Cause cruelty wins in the movies" / "I've been the archer, I've been the prey, who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?" / "And I cut off my nose just to spite my face, then I hate my reflection for years and yearsI wake in the night, I pace like a ghost, the room is on fire, invisible smoke, and all of my heroes die all alone"
· The Last American Dynasty (Folklore): “Holiday House sat quietly on that beach, free of women with madness, their men and bad habits, and then it was bought by me, who knows, if I never showed up, what could've been, there goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen, I had a marvelous time ruinin' everything
· Seven (Folklore): “I think your house is haunted, your dad is always mad and that must be why, and I think you should come live with, me and we can be pirates, then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet, and just like a folk song, our love will be passed on, please picture me, in the weeds, before I learned civility, I used to scream ferociously, any time I wanted
· mad woman obviously, just the whole thing!
· Champagne Problems (Evermore): ““This dorm was once a madhouse”, I made a joke, "Well, it's made for me"” // “"She would've made such a lovely bride, what a shame she's fucked in the head, " they said, but you'll find the real thing instead, she'll patch up your tapestry that I shred”
· Anti-Hero (Midnights): “Midnights become my afternoons, when my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room” / “I should not be left to my own devices, they come with prices and vices, I end up in crisis (tale as old as time)” / Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism, like some kind of congressman? (Tale as old as time), I wake up screaming from dreaming, one day I'll watch as you're leaving”
· WAOLOM ofcourse, just the whole thing.
Interestingly, Taylor's references to virtue, or themes of angelic, virginity, are pre-1989.
· Hey Stephen (Fearless): "'Cause I can't help it if you look like an angel, can't help it if I wanna kiss you in the rain, so come feel this magic I've been feeling since I met you, can't help it if there's no one else, mmm, I can't help myself"
· White Horse (Fearless): "Say you're sorry, that face of an angel, comes out just when you need it to, as I paced back and forth all this time, 'Cause I honestly believed in you, holdin' on, the days drag on, stupid girl, I should've known, I should've known, that I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale, I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet, lead her up the stairwell, this ain't Hollywood, this is a small town, I was a dreamer before you went and let me down, now it's too late for you and your white horse, to come around"
· The Lucky One (Red): "New to town with a made-up name, in the angel's city, chasing fortune and fame, and the camera flashes make it look like a dream" I think this whole song is really interesting to read when considering this idea of beasts versus angels, madness versus virtue, and the idea of her having been sold a lie.
In Summary
Taylor is using imagery of herself in an attic to imply she is aware her true self, her closeted and suppressed self, is coming through in her music, and she is saying she directly relates to Jane Eyre - she feels trapped by her closeted life, by the "1950s shit they want from me", she wants to be free, healthy, out. She is telling us all that these themes of madness are a direct result of all she is suppressing, a direct result of living in a cisheteronormative patriachy, and it is stifling her, ruining her life.
Taylor has got to a stage where she is now deliberately referencing queer media, authors and literature, knowing full well it will be looked into. These consistent themes are not accidental; she is saying through her art and her music that she is queer and she doesn't want to hide it anymore. I partially think a lot of the themes of death are about how she doesn't want to die in the closet and her work be analysed years later, to them be summarised as possibly gay later on. She wants to be known, now, as queer, as her true self, to cure her sickness of suppression.
She is also implying she is an unreliable narrator and there are certain parts of her music you can't trust at face value; that she is suppressing a huge part of herself and it is presenting in her lyrics, it is filled with queer closeted trauma and comphet as a manifestation of the suppression of her true identity, and she needs people to know.
I truly think she is ready to burn it all down, with Karma. In the words of Taylor, "all I think about is Karma".

2024.05.12 20:58 jnanibhad55 Ayo, I think I met Battler's evil twin... and then logic-battled him? (minor ch.5 spoilers)

So, like... I was talking about making a VN with some guys, and the one from Jersey was getting on my case about using the term "Magic system". He was saying stuff like "You really shouldn't bring magic into this story", "Sci-Fi and Fantasy don't mix", and even like tried to forbid me from calling the psychic-murder-women "witches" (even though one of them even dressed all in black and had a wand. (Sure, it was more of a hand-held tesla coil, but it was used like a wand.)
I had to explain to him that "a magic system is any set of rules by which a power or technology that doesn't exist IRL is defined and integrated into the world." and "An author doesn't have to use the term magic in the actual work, regardless of what they call it behind the scenes."
He also tried to tell me that the bad guys in the story would be too scientifically inclined to call the psychic-women-who-manipulate-infrasonic-frequencies-with-psionic-powers "witches"... and ignoring the fact that it's my plot, my rules... I deadass quoted the Decalogue at his ass. "It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and observations be heard."
Never before had I felt so much like an Umineko witch... and god, without love, it was fuckin tiring.
I'd asked him what VNs he's read... and it was just Steins;Gate, Chaos;Head, and Robotics;Notes. He somehow didn't pick up on the fact that one of these stories is basically ALL ABOUT WITCHES. Sure, they got an MK Ultra reskin. But like... DUDE. No hate to the Sci-Adv series, btw. I love S;G, Occultic;Nine, and the Chaos duology myself.
Also, you may be reading this, thinking I made it up. But I shit you not. This happened around march of 2023... and... like... some people might actually be this stupid.
Curious as to what other Umi fans would've done in this situation.

Arcane archivist Harper has always been plagued by dreams of grotesque creatures and bloody deaths. When she bumps into a ghostwalker in the Shambles and has a visceral experience of his execution, she knows it’s a foretelling. Yet fear of the Queen’s Guard stops her speaking out. When her vision indeed comes true, the unusual markings on the ghostwalker’s corpse, combined with his neatly excised vocal cords, send a ripple of terror through York.
The witch hunt is on. As the body count rises, Harper knows her magic is the only way to find the killer – if she can avoid being hanged as a witch. To protect both human and supernatural, Harper walks the thin line between their worlds. She and her demonhunter foster-sister form a multi-faith team with a forensic scientist, a spirit Harper accidentally summoned, and a techno-witch, to catch the killer before more people die.

‘The Hiding’ caught my attention while I was browsing through ‘BookSirens’ for a potential next read. First off, I must say, the cover is really amazing and stands out in quite some manner. That in itself was reason enough for my piqued interest. The description was very intriguing as well, and sounded something right down my alley. And so, I was more than eager to get my hands on the digital ARC on offer, which I eventually did without any hesitation. Hence, I would like to extend my deepest of thanks to the author, the publishers, and BookSirens for giving readers like me the opportunity to review this dark fantasy debut.
What is hidden from sense,
Will be hidden from mind,
Forgotten, unknowing,
Forever entwined.
York, famous for its ghosts, was the most haunted city in England… and was proud of it too. But that’s not the only thing it was famous for. ‘The Shambles’ was the last place anyone with sense would expect to find real magic. The twisting ginnels and alleyways branching from the street promised portals to dark adventures in other realms. Magic seemed to fizz like static in the air. Shoppers disappeared around corners, or possibly were whisked off to faraway queendoms. Each shop dazzled, selling everything from jewellery to paper, from antiques to modern art. And yet, it still gave the illusion that “fae” might be hiding in the gloaming mists… How’s that for setting-up a setting, eh?
Welcome to a world which is “infected” by “supes” (aka the ‘supernaturals’), and York, alongside England, is no exception. Humans, spirits, and the fae (the ‘Faerie’) roamed the streets here in what was like just another day. But the line separating them all was pretty thin, especially when darkness took over…
‘The Veil’ acted as the barrier between the human world and Faerie, kept strong all over England through generations. But that wasn’t the only defense mechanism protecting the people from the otherworldly. The ‘Queen’s Guard’ and the ‘Council of Faiths’ were two such institutions. The former’s official position was that no supernatural had survived something collectively referred to as ‘the Purge’, an event which ultimately had also led to the foundation of the latter. Together, by employing draconian enforcement measures throughout in the present times, they ensured that the “mortal realm” was kept separated from the ethereal one. Even now, hundreds of years later, humans patrolled the great wall surrounding York, always vigilant against incursion from those they called ‘supernatural.’ They came armed with fire and iron, dill and mint, silver crucifixes and blood red hamsa. The core materials changed little over the centuries, honed by each generation to destroy.
But the balance of everything in York was about to be shattered in the most chilling of ways…
“Never scream…”
A tangled medley of disembodied whispers, all saying the same two words, over and over.
“Never scream…”
Meet Harper Ashbury, a junior archivist and collector at the Saint Peter’s Cathedral in York. A specialist in the field of supernatural history, she helped to keep dangerous books out of the public eye, and researched ways to protect people from the supernatural. Working for the church under the guidance of the Archbishop of York himself was one thing, but Harper harbored a secret… one that was not at all welcome by anyone in York, both human or otherwise.
Apart from the horrific nightmares, the eerie visions, and the constant amnesia, Harper could “See” things… thanks to her “Sight”. Her past and her family were a complete blur to her, and she was desperate to find the answers to the seemingly dark and bleak events long gone by. Taking her in after an “accident”, the De Santos had become the family she never had. But they were not just any other ordinary family. The De Santos were demonhunters. The ones who fought against the supernaturals to protect the world from demons and the forces of evil. Curfews were for ordinary people. A De Santos was not scared of the dark. A De Santos was one with the dark.
Grace De Santos, Harper’s foster sister, was a vet by profession, and the only De Santos who wasn’t into demonhunting for the sole reason so that she could stay with Harper and make sure her archivist sister was safe. But the duo was about to be thrust into something far more dangerous than anything they had previously encountered, and their relations were about to be tested to the limits as York, the “night-safe” city, was not at all safe anymore…
The shocking and quite unusual death of a “ghostwalker” sends ripples across the city. Was it just a “death” in the first place, or was it a possible murder? Someone, or something, was carefully targeting people in the night and brutally killing them. With the police out of their depth having no cause of death and no suspects, and the Guard not willing to share anything with the Council, the Archbishop decides to take matters into his own hands. There was nothing a man as important as the archbishop could want with a junior archivist. There was only one reason he would summon her. To hunt something and kill it. And in his own words – “… In this matter, my faith in people is greater than my faith in science. You and Grace are uniquely placed to see the truth.”
The race against time begins as the bodies start to pile up in the most chilling of circumstances. With a helping hand from Dr. Saqib Siddique, a forensic supernaturalist, and a “not evil; just mischievous” spirit/demon, the sister duo embarks upon a path that is both dangerous and equally deadly if one is not careful enough. And one just can’t be careful enough in a place such as York… Can the group set aside their beliefs and differences to act as one and stop the killer in time?
All choice in the matter had been taken from her: use her abilities and risk death or bury them and remain forever lost. Magic was the only recourse left to find her home.
Most people might say they didn’t believe ghosts or supernaturals still walked the streets of England, but deep down, they were never sure.
Harper didn’t believe in ghosts, but she did believe in human evil.
To find the truth, she would need to face the darkness.

~The good:~
· To go alongside the amazing cover and the intriguing description, the whole setting of York, and the world around it in general, was superbly written and depicted throughout. It was as if I was a part of it myself! (real-life black & white pictures of York were present, which helped the cause!).
· The writing was just top notch by all means. It was vivid, highly atmospheric, and genuinely immersive all the way. The multi third-person POV was great, and a fun read.
· The story was excellent, engaging, and very exciting till the last page.
· The characters were very well written, and were memorable in more ways than one (a certain “individual” more so than the others!).
· The themes of religion and beliefs were pretty strong in general, and well depicted.
· The ending was great in my opinion, and sets up the next instalment pretty nicely.

~The “not so” good:~
In all honesty, I don’t have a single thing to complain about, believe it or not!

~Some quotes/dialogues and text to set your adrenaline rolling (as it did mine!):~
· ‘Never show fear, no matter how dark it is, no matter how strong your enemy. Never show fear.’

‘But feel fear. Feel fear. It’s God’s warning. It keeps you alive.’

· “Hurt them. Disable them. Live to fight another day. This is no honourable fight between gentlefolk. This is a fight for survival. Your survival and the survival of the innocents who depend on you. Fight dirty. Fight to win.”

· The ghostwalker removed his hat and bowed low. “Do not linger,” he cautioned his audience. “The night draws close and the mists rise. Death still walks the streets of York. Ghosts, witches, and demons watch from the shadows. No matter how many lies those in power tell, nowhere is truly night-safe. Be careful it is not your tale I tell on future nights. The bridge here is the fastest way back to your cars. Do not stray from the path, for where the ghosts do not walk, the Queen’s Guard surely will, and innocence is harder to prove than guilt.”

· Mist swirled around the car and danced in the fog lamps. The light scraped across black tarmac. Cat’s eyes gleamed, waiting to pounce, razor claws swiping at tires. The moon hovered behind naked silhouettes of trees and stars twinkled through their branches like an adornment of fairy lights. Frolicking stars, fallen from the sky, flickered around the trunk of an old oak, illuminating a skirt of long grasses. Then the tree was gone, consumed by the unending darkness. Harper clutched her shawl closer around her shoulders and settled back in her seat.

· No one comes out when it’s like this, she reminded herself, but it was a hollow comfort. No one human would be out. Everyone knew someone who had a friend whose cousin, or sibling, or child had been lost in the mist. Logic said they fell in the river and drowned, or met some unsavoury human, a quick knife between the ribs. Whispers said something inhuman lurked in the mists and stole souls away to another land. Then there were the people who came back changed, their eyes hollow, jerky movements like marionettes, a dark edge to their looks, hard and uncaring.

· The cemetery was pitch-black but for the wavering light of the guard’s torch. Even that thin beam of brightness didn’t reassure Harper, rather it created more darkness, throwing long shadows behind each blade of grass. Darkness piled upon darkness, pressing in, consuming, suffocating. Clouds overpowered the moonlight as the stars twinkled out, handful by handful.

~Final thoughts:~
A dark fantasy debut which is vivid, highly atmospheric, and sure to set your adrenaline rolling in excitement and intrigue alike. Simply put, ‘The Hiding’ by Alethea Lyons is right up there with one of my favorite reads of the year. York as a setting was so immersive and well depicted that you might end up feeling you’re a part of it yourself! The characters were great, the plot was superb, and the world was excellently put forth. Oh, and if you could not tell already, the writing was top notch by all means. An engaging read throughout with an ending so good that I can’t wait for the next installment! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you check it out!

2024.05.11 20:43 Playful-Climate3281 can someione pls look at this macbeth supernatural question response and see if its any good,

im currently on a grade 6 and dont think this essay is that great considering its my first time trying a new structure,.
In the extract, Shakespeare effectively presents the idea of the supernatural and implants uncanny thoughts into our heads. This is through the witches and their manipulative and unnerving act. W e see this emulsified through the second witch's words 'something wicked this way comes'. The use of juxtaposition in this quote tells us that even the witches had not expected Macbeth to become this evil and tyrannical through their foresite, 'wicked' suggests Macbeth is now at a stage considered on par with the witches in terms of evil. Furthermore, the use of chremamorphism: 'something' could be telling us that the witches do not recognise him due to his changed character. However, it could also suggest that the witches do not view him as a human any longer due to his immoral and unethical acts. Shakespeare additionally presents manipulation in the witches through their reply to Macbeth with 'A deed without a name' The noun 'deed' informs us that the witches are being secretive of their acts and not revealing their plans to Macbeth. Additionally 'deed' can have connotations of positive and negatives circumstances, which reinforces the idea of a manipulative act put on by the witches. Thus, proving Shakespeare presents the supernatural in the extract as primarily manipulative and unnerving. In the archetypal scottish play 'Macbeth', Shakespeare presents the idea of the supernatural as overall manipulative and evil. This is revealed through countless acts and scenarios in which the witches have played with truths and bended them to create false truths. This is emulsified through Banquo's words 'instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us honest trifles, to betray's'. The metaphor 'instruments of darkness' is used to refer to the witches and how they're able to metaphorically play with who they please, this iniquitous act is further reinforced by the noun 'darkness', which has connotations of evil and impurity. Moreover, the use of foreshadowing in 'to betray's' tells us that Banquo was aware of the supernatural and it's trickery, whilst Macbeth was ignorant and let his ambition take over his brain, acting as his hamartia. This idea is even further proven through Macbeth's own words whilst speaking to himself: 'heat oppressed brain'. This soliloquy is spoken by Macbeth to reveal the witches mental affect on him and how they've caused him immeasurable discomfort and pressure, as proven by the compound adjective 'heat oppressed', which means the witches are metaphorically melding his brain and choosing what he does through manipulation and control. Furthermore, the oxymoron 'oppressed brain' effectively adds a layer to this statement due to Macbeth lacking mental freedom and control. In conclusion, Shakespeare presents the supernatural as a manipulative and corrupted force. This would serve as a message and deterrent to the Jacobean audience in hopes of preventing any contact with spirits or witches.

2024.05.11 20:08 FallenDemonX Sareena & Askol, Advent of Calamity

Class: AP Transformation, Zoner, Slayer, Specialist

Role: Mid

Client Theme

----------------------------

Contest Relation:

Contrasting Parts, from u/MrMeem1: Sareena & Askol are a zoner mage and skirmisheassassin combo.
Written By a Different Style, from u/lydongwapo: Sareena has a unique use for her ult that operates more as a basic ability, but can cast a full ultimate by meeting some conditions. Both parts have a unique Ult that share their CD.
A Story Through Action: Sareena’s playstyle can be best described as “a witch summoning Satan”, by setting up the field and targeting enemies as sacrifice for her demonic spawn. They also operate as a necessary pair. Sareena is squishy and lacks damage but her abilities are required to operate Askol properly. As such, they are symbiotic just like in their lore.

Commentary:

Once again this was a revamp of an old idea. The concept was to make a spin on the whole “mother of the anti-christ” trope, as well as the inner demon trope. Its usually smth horrific, a supernatural crime against an innocent person, usually a young woman. But what if it didn’t need to be? What if not only were they both evil but the host was actually the worst of the two? Take the trope of being forced to give birth to a demon, twist it on its head and make it empowering, having the vessel be the one twisting the second party but not for good, like how we usually see these situations in media. That's what's at the core of Sareena’s story and design.
Gameplay wise, they are a symbiotic pair that uses combos, cash ins, setups and versatile resources to accomplish their goal. Been playing a lot of Master Duel as of late, so I wanted smth that resembled that type of game feel.

Appearance:

Sareena is a black haired tan woman with black markings across her whole body. Wears a white ornate gown over a black skirt. She is very visibly pregnant with an ominous red glow emanating from her belly.
Askol takes a shape similar to Aurelion Sol, but with a large round eyeless head and human toothless mouth that is always unhinged open. Has 2 pairs of sickle arms compsed of a flowing fire like substance, red and black. Its tail splits into 2 transluscent flaps resembling wings. Sareena's body is attached to Askol as well, with her arms embracing it from behind and her hair acting as a mane. Her skin is flayed and turned into fleshy membranes that act as wings.

Lore:

Sareena served dutifully under the Black Rose as one of many witches in charge of managing and weaponizing demons, the spirit realm and all matters of esoteric and ancient magics. But she was also special.
Centuries ago, the Black Rose encountered a most strange object in the spirit realm: some kind of spherical set of sigils surrounding a giant malformed entity, left alone in a ruin of Targonian origin. No mages could approach it without feeling an intense heat emanating from it, except for one. Erebas extended his hand and the sigils opened for him, letting him hold the now tiny egg like creature. As generations passed, Erebas’ descendants were the only ones capable of interacting directly with it. Further investigation on his family and the landscape surrounding the site showed that millenia ago a targonian sect crafted a demon that could kill a star dragon. Why such a weapon would be abandoned eluded the Black Rose, but it wasn’t relevant anymore. They had it now and they knew they couldn’t pass it up. Erebas’ bloodline was now purposely bred to be the most powerful and in touch with the creature, hopefully creating a suitable host for the demon. Sareena was the chosen subject. When she came of age, the entity was implanted into her womb.
Sareena was dutiful, but also ambitious, as any Black Rose witch worth her salt would be. As the being gestated, she slowly started connecting with it, analyzing it and learning about the spirit world through it. The entity was more awake than it let out and only she could see it. It had thoughts and agency. It had needs. Sareena started treating it more and more like her actual child, even naming it “Askol”, meaning “messiah” in Ochnun. Askol in turn gave her power. Sareena could feel unspeakable levels of magic emanating from it and flowing into her body. After a few months of testing the limits of their fused strength, black and red markings started to form on her skin. Her dreams were filled with visions of burning fields and blackened skies. One night, she decided to dig deeper into the dream.
She found herself in a completely dark space with a red orb in the center. She heard a strange voice from it. Askol’s voice. It told her to touch it and see what it sees the world for. She abided. Instantly images flooded her head: stars bleeding crimson, constellations made of black holes, planets cracked and reforged into rocky amalgamations held together by corpses of dragons, unspeakable monsters crawling on their surface. Sareena understood why the sect never released Askol: It was untamable, a wild beast bent on consuming and rebuilding all of creation. The truth of the method was also revealed: Askol was a parasite. The star dragon equivalent of a tapeworm. They knew they could never kill a dragon outright, so instead they made something smaller but deadly enough. Sareena reeled back, staring at the orb.
She smiled. She grabbed the orb and held it tight to her chest. Her baby, her little Messiah.
Her final weapon. Askol was a wild animal with the potential to sunder the universe, but ultimately still a cub in need of care and belonging. She knew she could use that to her favor. Askol now had something it would have never expected: A mother’s love.
As their hearts touched in the spirit realm, limitless power poured in the physical plane, destroying Sareena’s manor and all its residents. Askol emerged wrapped in the warped body of its mother and flew far into what used to be Camavor. There, it condensed back into her. Sareena was somewhat surprised to see herself in one piece as Askol cheered from her insides. She noticed that all pains from pregnancy were gone, she could only feel the wriggling demon and the seething power, though she was still visibly pregnant. She was transformed, warped into something greater than a mere human.
Askol may be just a worm to a deity, but for Runeterra and its heroes and villains, it might as well be their almighty God. And Sareena not only had exclusive rights to its power, she had its affection. Swain? An old fool. The Black Rose? Pathetic cowards Mordekaiser? A relic of the past. The Darkin? The other demons? Wannabe apocalypse bringers soon to be devoured by their true demonic messiah. Only the firmament could stand up to them.
Too bad that's exactly what they were made to destroy.

KIT:

Shared Passive: A Time and a Place
Innate: Baleful Union
Innate: Shared Power
All of Sareena’s abilities leave marks on the ground or on enemies. These marks are initially Dormant until triggered, becoming Manifested. In both states, the marks all last 6 + (0.3 per level) Seconds. Whenever a mark is triggered, Sareena casts an ability and when Askol emerges, the duration of both Dormant and Manifested marks is refreshed and Sareena gains a burst of 20% + (2% per level) Move Speed decaying over 2 Seconds, refreshing on acquisition. Additionally, Sareena gains a stack of Growing Power whenever a mark is Manifested, lasting until death.
For every 5 Stacks of Growing Power, she consumes them to earn a stack of Marks of The Beast. These stacks are consumed once Askol emerges, granting it 10 + (1 per level) AP until it dies.
Q: Brand Their Soul
Cost: 50/55/60/65/70 Mana
CD: 11/10/9/8/7 Seconds
Range: 700
Width: 100
Active: Sareena launches a projectile of dark mystic energy in a straight line, dealing 30/60/90/120/150 + (40% AP) magic damage to all enemies struck and applying a Dormant mark on all enemy champions hit. The mark is Manifested if they trigger a mark from W: Corrupt the World and E: Etch Horrid Truths, dealing the damage again, resetting the duration and silencing for 0.5 Seconds.
W: Corrupt the World
Cost: 70 Mana
CD: 10 Seconds
Range: 750
AoE: 400
Active: Create an evil sigil on the ground that arms after 0.7 Seconds. If an enemy champion, large monster or Sareena steps on it, it Manifests dealing 20/50/80/110/140 + (60% AP) magic damage and rooting all enemies in it for 1/1.3/1.6/1.9/2.2 Seconds. The same target cannot be rooted by another instance of this effect for 6 Seconds.

Passive: This ability holds up to 2/2/3/3/4 charges.
Active: Consume a charge to target a point, summoning a spatial rift that arms after 0.7 Seconds and lasts for 3 Seconds. When you summon another rift they send a connecting line of Ochnun text to the nearest two already existing rifts. The connected rifts and the lines become Dormant marks. When an enemy champion or large monster walks into these etchings, that particular line Manifests, dealing 15/35/55/75/95 + (20% AP) magic damage every half-second for as long as it lasts and slowing enemies in them by 30/35/40/45/50%, remaining for 0.7 Seconds after leaving the line.
You can have up to 4 rifts active at a time. New rifts over that cap despawn the oldest one.
R: Weave Into Eternity
Cost: 100 Mana
CD: 90 Seconds
Range: Self
Fear Range: 700
At least 4 Manifested marks must be active to cast this ability
Active: Sareena makes all Manifested marks Dormant again, gaining a shield for 40/60/80 + (10% AP) for each mark affected, lasting 3 Seconds. Then if less than 8 marks were affected, refresh this skill’s CD and Cost by 50/65/80%.
If 8 or more marks are affected, the skill goes on a full CD and you additionally gain Eternity, an effect that carries over to Askol. When Askol dies with this effect on, it will instead reconstruct Sareena while Fearing all enemies in range for 2/2.3/2.6 Seconds.
Askol Kit Passive: Blood and Starsfire
Whenever a mark is Manifested or made Dormant, refresh the CD of all basic abilities by 1 Second.

E: Inevitability
Cost: 80 Mana
CD: 15 Seconds
Range: 850
AoE: 500
Active: Target a Manifested mark to blink to it, making it Dormant and bursting with demonic starfire, dealing 50/90/130/170/210 + (50% AP) magic damage in an area.

2024.05.11 19:14 hoggersbridge Engines if Arachnea: A Science Fantasy Epic (Chapter 12: The Sword of the Ancients)

Eventually he managed to persuade the safety pod to let him out. It had stubbornly urged him to stay inside for his own protection while it sent out a distress signal.
“A recovery team is being sent to your coordinates,” it had told him, “You are advised to remain inside. Please keep your limbs within the pod at all times and await rescue. Thank you for your cooperation.”
“No one is coming,” he had replied in exasperation, “The people that built you have long since turned to stardust.”
“65 Syngman Bb is a class-C planet currently unsuitable for human life. Hazardous conditions are guaranteed.”
“You think I don’t know that?” he’d scolded it, “I was born on this miserable rock. I’m well aware of the dangers.”
Still, he had waited around for a bit to see if the machine would make good on its promise. In that time he’d tried to catch a nap inside the safety of the pod even though it reeked to high heaven. But after an hour the stuffiness and stink had driven him briefly insane and he’d demanded his release, stamping his foot like a petulant brat. He’d conjured up an irrational suspicion in his head that the reason the pod wasn’t letting him out was that it was physically incapable of obeying his commands, having perhaps taken too much damage in the crash. The last thing he wanted was to be entombed alive inside it.
Then the pod wall in front of him slid aside and Rene felt the hot blast of the tropical breeze as a new world sprang to life before his eyes. The Aeronautical Division had never flown this far north to his knowledge—all of this was virgin territory. The lithobraking bladders had deflated shortly after landing and lowered the pod gently to the ground.
Rene stepped out onto the rich black loam of the jungle. And a jungle it was, that and then some. The shortest trees were at least sixty feet tall, while the tallest gave him a crick in the neck when he tried see where their branches ended. Ropy strangler vines wound around the crooked trunks, weaving a loom so thick that he could barely make out the suns. In fact he wasn’t entirely sure it was daytime anymore. From the sparseness of the undergrowth it was clear that not much could grow under the total shadow of the canopy.
“Alright, trooper,” he said to himself, “What now?”
Oxygen narcosis would kill him in a matter of hours. He was beginning to regret opening the pod and letting out all the good air, though he doubted it would have lasted very long anyway with that great big crack in the glass. Besides, he couldn’t bear another hour stuck in that cesspit. He’d made quite a mess in there, and he rather hoped that the spirit in the pod wouldn’t take offense.
Which was quite ridiculous, really. He had bigger things to worry about than offending an incorporeal presence. He was going to rupture his lungs out here in a matter of hours. Either that, or starve to death, or sprout mold across his skin like Lethway, or perish of thirst, or get gobbled up by some exotic new lifeform yet to be named by science. Or worse, the Amits could come creeping up on him in the night while he lay delirious. All he would feel were claws digging into the soft flesh of his neck, and then…
“You’re being hysterical,” Deschane would’ve told him right about now, “Act like you’ve got a pair, trooper. Remember your training.”
What training? Three years in officer training school? His mother has been so proud when he’d been accepted into the elite Pathfinder Regiment. It had meant that his family received additional weekly rations. Even better, they had earned the right to add a five by four foot living extension to their living quarters, which was just large enough for him to crawl into at bedtime and save his parents the trouble of stuffing themselves and three fully grown children into a chamber that could barely hold two people. Yes, he’d had it somewhat soft as an officer, however lowly his position. For one thing, it had meant that he only had to complete the barest minimum of an infantryman’s training regimen. A regimen which included, incidentally, several courses on surviving in the wilderness. Skills like building a fire without flint and steel, constructing makeshift breathing apparatuses in case of gasmask failure, or even fashioning those crude but highly effective stone weapons like the Amits were so fond of using; these things had been given lesser priority than topics like strategy, logistics, small-unit tactics, cartography, navigation and basic firearms drills.
As such, Rene had only taken the first survivalist course, and his memory of that was spotty at best. Ah well. It was better than nothing.
“Rain or shine, we hold the line,” Lethway had been fond of quoting. It was the motto of the 3rd Pathfinder Regiment and its meaning was simple: a proper trooper made do with what he had, no matter the circumstances.
Cheering up a bit at the memory of his eternally ebullient friend, Rene began taking stock of his situation. Oxygen narcosis was his immediate enemy. He would start to get dizzy and slap-happy in a few minutes unless he did something about it.
An idea occurred to him. The ancestor-gods would’ve faced the same issues when it came to surviving on the surface world. He opened the survival kit and rummaged around for something that could help. Sure enough, the first tool he found was a rubber mask with a see-through visor. It seemed much flimsier than the standard-issue masks he was used to, with a long hose connecting its snout to a breathing apparatus mounted on a backpack. Rene wiped his face clean with his sleeves before putting it on. The visor fit his face like a glove, the straps and the lining of the mask remolding themselves to form an airtight fit. It came as no surprise that the air he inhaled through it was sweeter and more wholesome than any he had ever encountered. He took a moment to simply enjoy the luxury of breathing before moving on with his work.
Rene also found a spare set of clothing in the form of a white jumpsuit made of some supple fabric that was stronger than canvas and lighter than silk. But there was no way he was getting into that without washing himself clean. Rene hated feeling filthy. Like every right-thinking citizen of Mound Ulysses he was a severe germaphobe who knew that uncleanliness always preceded outbreaks of disease. Plagues had wiped out entire settlements in the past, the tight confines of the hive a natural breeding grounds for contagion. Yes, a good wash in a river or pond would do him wonders.
Speaking of which, he still had to secure a source of potable water. He licked his lips at the thought of a cup of water from the underground reservoirs of home. Ulysses was famous for its delicious water. Chock-full of minerals it was, enough to put hair on a growing boy’s unmentionables.
Searching for water would mean venturing into the unknown, and with night falling who knew what awaited him out there, or how far that river he’d seen truly was? Coming across some local wildlife was a certainty.
He still remembered those winged harpies he’d seen right before the Divine Engine had given him the old heave-ho. The beam-throwing weapon had caught scores of the creatures in its flames, but many more had flown clear and escaped. Even now they could be roosting in the branches above him, waiting to dive down and dismember him with the same ease with which they had butchered the Amits. Rene wasn’t taking any chances. He needed a weapon, and once more, the box provided.
It came in a sheathe of alabaster metal, a short broad blade with a cumbersome basket hilt. He wondered why a stubby blade needed such bulky hand protection when it was clearly unsuited to sword fencing. The pommel folded up to reveal a red button. Pressing it, Rene was startled when the blade began to vibrate in his hand like a living thing. He was so surprised that he dropping it by accident, snatching back his hand and letting it fall. It hit the ground hilt-first and spun, the cutting edge glancing against a huge granite boulder. The stone parted like butter beneath a hot knife, splitting apart into two equal halves. But the blade kept on going, skittering across the ground and striking the base of a tree. There was a terrible groan of stricken timber and the giant was felled, Rene judiciously stepping aside as it ripped through the blanket of vines to leave a gaping rent in the canopy above him.
Rene gingerly picked up the now inert sword and grasped it firmly in hand.
“Why, yes,” he muttered, feeling pleased, “Yes, I believe this will do.”

Questions about Citation, Attribution, and Ethics as a Data Witch
Hello friends! I've been thinking a lot about "correspondences" in witchery and how much easier it would be to figure out what ingredients to use for a spell (spell jars are one of my favorite witch things to make) if correspondences were put into a database and data-visualization tools like Power BI to "slice" on different attributes -- ie, you could filter for a specific magic power, deity, or even a pantheon you're wanting to work with.
I threw together a concept file that looks something like this:
Filtering for herbs with a \"Beauty\" power that are also associated with Water
Or, if you're more interested in deity associations, you could sort it like this instead:
Showing herbs that are associated with Egyptian gods, as well as all the powers associated with those herbs
I think this could be a really useful tool, but I don't want to get too far down the rabbit hole of "how do I set up a website for this" without sorting out the ethics of data-sourcing first, and that's where I'd love your help. This proof-of-concept data-set is a section from Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (I do own the book); I don't think it would be ethical to reproduce the majority of the data from the book on a website, and so I'm running into a couple dilemmas.
Firstly, are there good, open-source resources that I can use as the data-source for this? I don't mind spending some time cleaning up the data to get it into a usable state (I'm pretty decent at that). I'd like correspondences for herbs, rocks, and any other nature stuff (animals, feathers, shells, etc).
Secondly, when it comes to citing copyrighted works, what's a good rule of thumb for how much information is OK to share/quote from a source?
Thanks in advance, y'all!

2024.05.11 04:01 EliasAhmedinos Something followed my Aunt back from Bangladesh

This is my Aunt's story which happened to her when she was fifteen, back in the early 2000s.
My family are from London but we are ethnically Bengali. This story starts when my Aunt and her family all went for a trip back to our ancestral country of Bangladesh.
They visited her father's village, or I should say my grandfather's village. It was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by endless paddy fields. The village consisted of a few really old houses, dating back to the days of colonial Britain, all built around a big pond. There was a small mosque nearby and further away from the mosque, was a small forest. My Aunt and her siblings were told by the village elders not to venture into the forest, where there was an old banyan tree. According to them, that specific banyan tree was supposedly haunted.
One evening my Aunt and her siblings along with some of the village children went into the forest to play, despite being warned not to go over there. The village children assured that they played in the forest many times and nothing happened to them, as long as they didn't go near that tree. The children showed my Aunt and her siblings the infamous tree and they all agreed to stay away.
The tree looked very old and creepy with its trunk twisted and its branches protruding far and wide. Despite its appearance, my Aunt was not so gullible, as being one of the older children in her family. She found all this talk of haunted trees to be silly and just a tall tale told by the elders of the village to scare the children. However she agreed to stay away.
My Aunt wasn't playing as she felt that she was too old for such childish games and was only there to supervise the youngsters. The kids started playing 'It' then afterwards played 'Hide and Seek'. The village children started begging my Aunt to play with them and to be the seeker. After a while of persuading, she agreed and reluctantly started to count as the kids started to run and look for the best places to hide. Once she was done counting, she went on the hunt to look for them. She managed to find a few of the kids quick enough, mainly the younger ones, but a few were left yet to be found deeper in the forest.
My Aunt walked further in and shortly after she happened to stumble upon the banyan tree. She smirked and decided to caress the ancient bark of the tree, going against her promise. She saw that one of the tree's boughs hung low and thought it would be a nice spot to sit for a while and take in the scenery. After the short respite, she pressed on. When she found all the kids, they all decided to finish the game as it was dusk and the forest was growing dark. Everyone heard the call to prayer from the mosque nearby, so they all proceeded to walk out of the forest and back home.
That night, my Aunt awoke mid sleep due to the heat. In the village there were no street lights so everything was pitch black and all you could hear were the sounds of crickets and frogs from the pond. She tossed and turned as she tried to go back to sleep but started hearing a peculiar noise outside her open window. It was a metallic clinking sound. The sound grew persistant, clinking every second. She looked through the grate of the window and saw nothing but the night staring back at her. She decided to call out quietly hoping for a response, but nothing. Shortly after, the sound stopped so my Aunt brushed it off thinking nothing of it and went back to sleep.
After a few days, the family left my grandfather's village and were heading back to the city airport. Their trip had come to an end and it was time to return home, back to the UK. While they were saying farewell to everyone my Aunt saw a woman further behind from everyone else, staring at her. My Aunt never seen that woman before during their stay. She thought why no one had introduced her to the woman as the village was all family orientated. What was very strange was that the woman was dressed in a traditional red bridal saree with a garland around her neck, golden bangles on her wrists and a headpiece hanging down her forehead. My Aunt asked one of her sisters who that bride was but her sister couldn't give her an answer due to the commotion.
When they were at the airport and lining up to be boarded, my Aunt's eyes wondered around. Nothing but families all seated and waiting for their respective flights. She then caught a glimpse of a woman in a peculiar red saree. She realised it was that same woman from the village. The woman was further away from the waiting line, just standing in one place and looking at people walk past her. My Aunt found it odd that she was at the same airport as them despite being seen at the village earlier. Also what was strange was that the woman was in a bride's attire in the middle of a busy airport, which would be completely unheard of over there. She had no luggage with her or anyone accompanying her.
On board the plane, my Aunt was coming back from the bathroom and was suprised to see the woman again, sitting alone and staring out of the window. She asked my grandmother that she had seen the woman in the village and asked who she was. My grandmother was too tired to answer and dismissed her question. My Aunt concluded that the woman must have been from one of the nearby villages and was passing through their's as she was also heading towards the airport. She then tried to forget all about it.
Back home in London, after a good few days, my Aunt and her family all went to visit another one of my uncles' house. It was tradition to visit relatives when returning home, back from a visit to Bangladesh. When they all entered the living room and greeted everyone, my Aunt was absolutely shocked to see the same familiar woman in the red saree from the village and the plane. My Aunt was very puzzled but thought that the woman must have been related to the family. This was proof.
Everyone was talking and my grandfather was recounting their time in the old country. My Aunt was watching the woman and found it weird that she was just standing in the corner just listening to the conversation. My Aunt also realised that the woman never spoke a single word and couldn't recall anyone ever speaking to her since they entered the house. She wondered why the woman was still dressed up as a bride and found it very bizarre.
When it was time to eat, everyone was getting ready to sit down at the table. My Aunt was one of the last ones to get up but realised the woman was staring at her and smiling. She decided to say hello to the woman and ask her who she was in Bengali. The woman didn't respond, she just continued to smile at my Aunt. She thought the woman was just shy as that was quite normal behaviour for village women in Bangladesh. She felt abit awkward and started complimenting on the woman's attire and her payal anklets. "Who are you speaking to?" My uncle said across the room in Bengali. The room was silent and everyone was staring at my Aunt in confusion. My Aunt pointed at the woman, bewildered by my uncle's question. "What? There's no one there." My Aunt's sister responded. My Aunt thought everyone was playing a joke on her but shortly after realised they were all being serious. She started to freak out. She kept saying that there was a woman in the room but everyone kept insisting that there wasn't anyone there. Everyone started worrying as my Aunt was hyperventilating at the sight of the mysterious red figure smiling back at her. She eventually passed out.
A while later, my Aunt came around and found herself lying on the couch, resting her head on my grandmother's lap and her sisters all huddled beside her. My Aunt didn't see the woman anymore where she had been previously standing. My Aunt darted her eyes around the room to double check if the woman was still there. She wasn't.
On the opposite couch, there was an imam from the local mosque. He was a family friend and a respected community leader called over by my uncle. The imam asked my Aunt what happened and she explained that she saw the woman first in the village and kept seeing her until that very day and only she was able to see her, as confirmed by everyone else. After careful consideration, the imam said it sounded like some nefarious entity had followed her from the village and latched itself on to her.
My grandfather started to interrogate my Aunt about the forest and the old banyan tree and eventually she admitted to everyone that she sat on the bough of the tree. When my grandfather heard that, he got very angry and scolded her. He repeated that tree was haunted and questioned why she didn't listen to the village elders. My Aunt explained that she thought it was all a joke. When the imam asked why my grandfather had thought that the tree was haunted, my grandfather never gave an explanation and said that he would tell him afterwards in private.
The imam recited some prayers and blew on my Aunt. My Aunt couldn't remember most of that encounter as she blacked out again however, according to everyone present in the room, she started to freak out and started to act manic when she heard the prayers. She started growling and her eyes looked like they were about to burst from their sockets. She attempted to lunge at the imam, but everyone held her down. A while later, the imam left the house and eventually returned back and gave her special water to drink daily and oil to rub her body with after everytime she bathed. This was all part of a long exorcism process known as 'ruqya', in arabic.
That night, my Aunt was too afraid to sleep so my grandmother slept in the same bed next to her while one of her sisters slept on the top bunk. My Aunt awoke after a long slumber. Her eyes started slowly adjusting to the darkness but she was still in a sleepy haze. She realised she could hear a clinking sound to her right towards the window. She thought it was her sister causing a racket so she groggily told her to be quiet. When the noise didn't relent, my Aunt turned and looked towards the window. It wasn't her sister. To her absolute horror my Aunt saw a dark figure sitting on the windowsill. She quickly realised that the metallic sound were the sounds of bangles and anklets being played with. My Aunt's eyes fully adjusted to the dark and it became evident that the figure was indeed that of the woman. My Aunt screamed her lungs out and the whole house awoke.
The second visit from the imam explained to my Aunt that whatever she kept seeing would not go away on its own. She would continue to see it unless she completed her religious treatment which he reminded her, was a very long process. My Aunt's family was certain that it was a spiritual matter and not a psychological one. My Aunt never displayed any signs of mental illness in the past.
Days passed and my Aunt saw the woman everywhere, though she did get occasional respites from the woman. The woman would show up one day and might follow my Aunt wherever she went, but the next couple of days would not be seen at all.
She would see the woman at school standing by the whiteboard in her classroom, looking at the pupils like she was teaching the lesson. The woman would be seen when my Aunt was hanging out with her mates in the park after school, just watching them from the trees. When my Aunt would go shopping in the supermarket with her family, the woman was there waiting for her at the aisles and always followed them far behind as they shopped. Someday it would be in the same room as my Aunt, other days it would be seen through the window on the street. Some nights when my Aunt was laying in bed, she would hear the slow clinking sound of the woman's anklets going up the stairs. The sound would stop whenever it reached my Aunt's bedroom door, as if the figure was waiting to be let in. The woman once was encountered when the family were all sitting at the table to eat and my Aunt found her sitting under the table with her forehead resting on her knees. She screamed surprisingly but quickly disregarded the matter in order to not scare her family.
The ominous figure never spoke. It never harmed my Aunt directly or made any threatening acts towards her. The woman just smiled that eerie smile. My Aunt continued her religious treatment which in turn made her very weak and sapped her spirit. The imam would visit her often and she would have many more exorcism rituals carried out on her, all she could never recount.
My Aunt tried her best to get on with her life and started to get used to the figure always being around that she stopped feeling afraid of it. She even started to talk to it. She used to talk about random things and the woman just responded with silence. Although she got close to the figure at times, my Aunt never dared to touch it.
A couple of years passed and the mysterious woman would appear less frequently, like only a couple of times a month. Eventually she stopped appearing altogether and was gone for good. My Aunt completed her years long spiritual treatment. She felt a huge relief but at the same time in a very bizarre and twisted way, she felt sad and empty. That figure was in her life for so long that she grew so accustomed to it and saw it as normal. For her not seeing the woman anymore was a huge change in reality. This whole ordeal did take a huge mental toll on her throughout the couple of years and my Aunt was never truly the same after that.
One afternoon my grandfather decided to shed some light into the past as he felt like it was the right time for my Aunt to learn the truth. He showed her a very old black and white photograph dating back to the 50s. It was him and his parents and siblings all in a family portrait. My Aunt`s eyes widened and her jaw dropped as she saw an old familiar face in the centre of the photo. It was her. The woman in the bridal saree. Garland, bangles, everything. She was next to a man dressed as a groom.
My grandfather explained to her that long ago, he had a sister. That photo was from her wedding day. The story was that she was married to a man from the neighbouring village but she did not want to get married to him. My grandfather's sister was at first promised to another suitor since they were children. A good, kind man from another nearby village. She grew up with the idea that she would marry that man when she came of age. However the man she actually ended up marriying offered a larger dowry and so her father then changed his mind and instead accepted that man to take his daughter's hand despite the previous arrangement and his daughter's protest. In Bangladesh it's the father's word over his daughter`s wishes and she was doomed to spend her entire life with a man she did not desire. So in the night, after the marriage ceremony was completed, she was due to move in with the groom and his family and relocate to the other village. My grandfather's sister did not hesitate and ran off in a frenzy in the dark, never to be seen again on her wedding night. The next morning when she was found, it was deep in the forest, and hanging by her neck from a branch of the old banyan tree. My Aunt could not believe it while she heard the story as her eyes welled up with tears.
When the imam visited the house one day he clarified that, what my Aunt encountered was not my grandfather's sister. It was a jinn who took the form of her and followed my Aunt back home to London. For those who don't know, jinns are demons in the Islamic world. In Islam, there is no notion of ghosts being trapped in their last moments of life. There's only the jinn that imitate the deceased person and prey upon people.
The reason why the old banyan tree was perceived as haunted by the villagers was not only because of my grandaunt's tragic demise. A few other horrific events happened revolving that tree in the past. Once a passing traveler was caught stealing jewellery from the village and was chased by the villagers into the forest and was hacked to death with machetes. The thief's body was slumped down resting on the trunk of the banyan tree with his blood painting the bark red. Another story was that a witch was caught doing black magic deep in the forest where bloody menstrual rags and torn up pages of the qur'an with black markings and grids scribbled all over, were found hanging from the tree.
Whoever interacted with that tree always reported to experience some sort of supernatural activity one way or another. That day, when my Aunt first explained to everyone about the woman, my grandfather had a strong feeling that she was talking about his deceased sister.
I didn't remember this whole ordeal when it happened at the time because I was very young, but the story was told to me by various family members when I was older. It was only recently that my Aunt and I were talking at a family function and she retold her story to me herself in the utmost detail. Her story was always the focal point whenever the subject of the paranormal arose during family conversations.
A couple of people think my Aunt was just suffering from mental illness during that time, although this doesn't make any sense. My Aunt never knew of my grandfather's sister before that revelation. My grandfather never once mentioned or showed a picture of his sister to either my Aunt or her siblings while they were growing up, neither did my grandmother. It was a painful, touchy subject and it was never heard or mentioned. I believe my Aunt and this was very real to her and it greatly impacted her life growing up as it permanently left a mark on her. I'm just glad that she is back to normal and that the woman in the red saree was gone for good.
I have more scary stories which happened to other family members so if you would like to hear them, let me know.

Mercari Japan Experience
I am in north America and was looking at Mercari Japan to buy a few articles of clothing that are expensive in the United States but are a reasonable price in Japan. I was trying to find Montbell products in the states which are not outrageously expensive. You use a service called Buyee, here are the rates I was quoted. The Japan outdoor market has some pretty good items if you want to look over the pond. Let me know if you have any questions.

2024.05.11 00:07 Hannah--Bug My Wolf Name Bank

I have so many wolves and I will likely have so many more. This requires a lot of names! For my pups, I use only things that wolves would know about - nature stuff, personality traits, etc... Sometimes it is hard to come up with these, especially in the context of almost-only-Wyoming, lol. I've done a lot of research (but could still do more) to dig up new names. Some of them are pretty funky, so I figured I'd share my efforts! :)
PS, If you want to share names from your own personal collection, I'm all ears! :D

2024.05.10 19:53 _Mane007_ IB English A paper 2 (Macbeth and A Dolls House) notes and sample paper

INTRO
In the realm of literature, Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" and William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" stand as two compelling works that delve into the intricate tapestry of human nature, societal expectations, and the relentless pursuit of power. While Ibsen's exploration ia dolls house is a 3 act play rooted in the constraints of 19th-century domesticity, Shakespeare's tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of medieval Scotland written in the 17th century . Despite the differences in setting and genre, both works share thematic threads that unravel the complexities of ambition, deception, A Doll's House" and "Macbeth," examining the main characters' journeys, the consequences of their choices and how they struggle to find autonomy as well as the change in their moral complexity erspective, character development, and symbolic language to explore the themes of autonomy, illusion versus reality, and the consequences of choice
Struggle for Autonomy:
In "Macbeth," the struggle for autonomy is depicted primarily through Macbeth's ambition and desire for power. He becomes increasingly consumed by his quest for control, ultimately leading to his downfall. In contrast, "A Doll's House" focuses on Nora Helmer's struggle for autonomy within the constraints of her marriage and societal expectations. Her journey towards self-discovery and independence drives the narrative, culminating in her decision to leave her family in search of freedom.
In "A Doll's House," the struggle for autonomy is embodied by Nora Helmer. At the play's outset, Nora is confined by societal expectations and the restrictive gender roles of her time. The quote, "I believe that before all else, I am a reasonable human being, just as you are" (Act 3), encapsulates Nora's assertion of her humanity and her desire for autonomy. Her journey to secure a loan, albeit through deceptive means, and her eventual decision to leave her family at the play's conclusion signify a radical quest for self-determination. (Demanding equality and character development)
In "Macbeth," the struggle for autonomy is depicted through Macbeth's relentless ambition and quest for power reflects a tension between personal desires and external influences. However, as the play progresses, his ambition overrides moral considerations, leading to a loss of personal autonomy. The quote, "Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? (Forwshadowing and symbolism)
moral complexity
"Macbeth" delves into moral complexity through Macbeth's descent into darkness and his internal conflict between ambition and guilt. The play explores the consequences of moral corruption and the erosion of ethical boundaries. Similarly, "A Doll's House" examines moral complexity through Nora Helmer's actions and the societal expectations that shape her choices. Her decision to forge a loan and deceive her husband raises questions about morality and the sacrifices individuals make to maintain appearances.
In "A Doll's House," moral complexity is evident in Nora Helmer's journey. The quote, "You arranged everything according to your own taste, and so I got the same tastes as you, or else I pretended to" (Act 1), encapsulates Nora's moral compromise within the constraints of societal expectations. Ibsen portrays Nora's actions as driven by a desire for survival within the restrictive norms of her time. (Irony and Choice of Words:)
In "Macbeth," moral complexity is vividly portrayed through the protagonist's descent into darkness. The quote, "I am in blood stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, (Act 3, Scene 4), captures Macbeth's acknowledgment of the moral point of no return. Shakespeare's depiction of Macbeth's moral complexity reflects the interplay between ambition, guilt, and the consequences of one's choices (Forwshadowing and internal conflict)
Consequences of Choices:
In "A Doll's House," the consequences of choices are notably portrayed through Nora Helmer's transformative journey. Nora's decision to forge her father's name and take out a loan, as well as her subsequent actions to maintain the facade of a happy marriage, set the stage for the unraveling of her life. The quote, "I must stand quite alone if I am to understand myself and everything about me" (Act 3), encapsulates the pivotal moment when Nora realizes the consequences of her choices. (First person perspective and Character Development:)
In "Macbeth," the consequences of choices are vividly depicted through the titular character's ruthless ambition. Macbeth's choice to pursue power at any cost, fueled by the witches' prophecies and Lady Macbeth's encouragement, leads to a series of morally compromising actions. The quote, "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, (Act 5, Scene 5), reflects Macbeth's realization of the emptiness and transience of life. The consequences of his choices result in guilt (symbolism and Metaporical language)
Illusion vs. Reality:

Conclusion:
Using their characters and narratives to provoke thought and reflection on the human condition. In "Macbeth," the consequences of unchecked ambition and moral decay reverberate through the tragic journey of the titular character and the corrupting influence of power on society. Conversely, "A Doll's House" offers a poignant critique of gender roles and societal expectations, Synthesizing this information, we recognize the enduring relevance of these plays, as they continue to resonate with contemporary audiences grappling with issues of power, identity, and morality. Despite the temporal and spatial disparities between 17th-century Scotland and 19th-century Norway, the universal themes explored in both works transcend historical contexts, offering timeless insights into the complexities of the human experience.
