In the vast theatre of my wearied mind, Where sadness plays its unkind grind, A weary spectator, I've watched the show, Endless reels of gloom on flow.
But within the depths, a quiet plea, A whisper rising fervently from me, Cries out for the curtain's final fall, On this tragic play that shadows all.
I am ready now, more than ever before, To walk out from this chilling lore. The acts have been long, the scenes too stark, My soul yearns for a place to disembark.
The audience of my thoughts agrees, Tired of the echoes of desperate pleas. We crave the light, the script's rewrite, Where joy, not sorrow, fills the night.
Enough of tears that salt my days, Enough of wandering in this haze. I seek the dawn with open arms, Ready to embrace its healing balms.
The final scene I wish to see, Is one where I am truly free. Free from the chains of relentless pain, Ready to feel the sun, not just the rain.
I'm set to claim a brighter part, In the ongoing drama of my heart. To turn the page, to start anew, To find a tale that's bright and true.
Let this readiness not falter or fade, But grow stronger with each step made. For I am done with the shadows' dance, Ready for light, for a new expanse.
So, come now, end, I welcome thee, Set this captive spirit free. For I am ready to reclaim, A life where joy, not sadness, reigns.

2024.05.15 16:29 Locutus747 Thoughts on Hairspray touring?

I’ve got a new teenage theatre fan in the house and while I like good music and performances I really don’t know a lot about a lot of shows. We’ve only seen phantom, MJ, lion king, and Hamilton and enjoyed them all. I saw Hairspray was coming through and was wondering how that would be going in blind?

In the past five years, Simon S. Belleau’s art practice has consistently explored questions of language, interpretation, translation, and the transposition between text and image. Using a visual vocabulary that borrows codes from theatre and cinema, he strives to interest viewers in what might be on the other side of the decor, in the text concealed behind the image, in the words shaping what we see. All that usually happens behind the scenes - historical events and writings, film stills, props, and movie scripts are used, dissected, and reconstructed. In a world disrupted by the impact of artificial intelligence, in which we see an increasing delocalization of the source of image and voice, Simon S. Belleau encourages viewers to consider what value should be given to what is said if the voice no longer comes solely through the belly’s breath.

2024.05.15 08:42 hellogoodvibes Help me find this script from high school theatre class?

I remember doing this one act play(?) script in my high school theatre class. It wasn’t performed we just worked on it for a bit for fun. It had many characters, and they didn’t have names they were just called by their personality. There was a character named Slut, another named Invalid. I can’t remember the rest but there were at least 10 characters. The characters go around introducing themselves and telling a bit about who they are. Other character names could be Country Girl, Widow, Comedian…? The script had various options for the Slut characters name like Tramp.
Does anyone know of this random one act play?

2024.05.15 03:00 sushiii38 Advice for an aspiring actress

This was back in high school but it hasnt been long since i graduated so its still a pretty recent wound, i love acting, so naturally i tried out for the drama club and their plays and musicals, every single time, the biggest roles almost always went to this girl, and i realized what was going on,turns out she has some relations and they spoke to the director for her.
At auditions, she read the script like it was a history report, boring, no emotion, i got up, and i even gave the character a british accent because it felt right. What i wasn't expecting, is that i also had someone related to someone close to the director, and they saw i was trying out and getting backstage crew even though the director seemed to love the way i acted and portrayed different emotions.
They came up and talked to me about it, they told me they could talk the director into giving me the role, i politely declined because i wanted to be in the spot light because of my talent and not because of who i knew, in the end she got the role and acted with the SAME mannerisms and accent i had at auditions.
So there i was in the audience seeing someone else try to mimic the essence i gave to a character on stage, anyways time passed and when we graduated we had a little awards ceremony for the people who participated in choir and theatre and the arts, she got a scholarship, what did i get?
Oh I got my teacher forgetting to mention my name on stage, as well as forgetting my certificate, and when she did give me a certificate in private it was a wrong outdated one and she had to reprint a generic one for me, couldnt even bother printing my name, or the date she just scribbled it in sharpie.
She gave me a little card with your typical "You are so great there are just so many students and i hope you won't take it to heart" basically a "oops i forgot." im feeling stuck in life and dont know what to do for college.
How can i be an actress like this!? I thought if i was honest and worked hard, good things would come. I just don't know what to do anymore. Any advice???

2024.05.15 00:30 Temporary-Driver-772 Devil's Bargain Counter

Reflecting on 2021, truly marked the zenith of my young career. The pandemic was coming to an end, I was fresh from the hallowed halls of a prestigious but unheralded college, thrust into the corporate labyrinth where, as a mere sidekick to the big shots, I contributed to a deal of record-breaking magnitude. My modest corporate minion life was exaggerated into legend by my professors during an alumni reunion, leading to a rather embarrassing episode where I was paraded around as the poster child of their education career’s success. My parents, not ones to shy away from a bit of pomp, lauded my achievements to anyone within earshot.
But as 2022 unfurled its chaos with the epidemic, my professional life spiralled downwards as swiftly as it had risen. I was laid off, and replaced by a nepotistic hire—my boss's new mistress's nephew. During my dismal final days, my colleagues, once comrades became corporate sharks, whispers of them scheming to claim my last efforts as their own filled the empty office spaces.
Compelled by financial duress to abandon my central city dwelling, I relocated to the outskirts with two college mates, Jaz and Kath, who had similarly found themselves victims of the economic downturn. We settled into apartment 606, a unit with dubious charm, suspiciously affordable on the 13th floor of a dreary building, its corridor haunted by a flickering sensor light that was only designed to function on rare occasions. Yet, the apartment itself was surprisingly very well furnished, almost like something that jumped out from a design mag, out beating sample rooms in Ikea, boasting a spacious balcony, a living room ready for an impromptu soirée, a dining table that’s good enough to hold a banquet(became our co-working space) and a kitchen isle that became our sanctuary and curse.
When we first settled into our new abode, we discovered a trove of fine kitchen utensils, perfect for whipping up sophisticated cuisine and crafting cocktails worthy of a swanky soirée. Tucked away in the fridge, among the remnants of the previous tenants' life, was a quaint note: “The three of us really enjoyed our stay here, especially our meals and nights spent by the kitchen island. We hope you find as much joy in it as we did. Use it well.” With a casual flick of my wrist, I dismissed the note into the garbage can, oblivious to the depth of its seemingly innocuous message. Little did I know, that piece of paper was more a passing of the torch than a simple goodbye.
Our initial days in apartment 606 brimmed with camaraderie and impromptu celebrations: movie nights sprawled on the living room sofas, barbeque dinners under the stars on our balcony, and co-working sessions at the dining table, peppered with resume tweaks and contemplative conversations over cocktails. We even scored a second-hand karaoke machine, allowing me to channel my inner diva—a throwback to my musical theatre days in college and my stint as the voice of corporate presentations and negotiations at my previous job, where I was known for my resonant yet finely tuned voice.
Yet, as the months wore on and the job market remained unyielding, our early merriment slowly surrendered to a creeping anxiety. The kitchen island, once the heart of our home where laughter and shared meals flowed freely, gradually morphed into the epicenter of our collective unease, bearing silent witness to the quiet desperation settling over us.
One evening, in the suspiciously affordable yet stylish apartment, I sank into the sofa, my spirits dampened by my favorite team's disheartening loss. The mood was grim, mirroring my fears of my beloved player's potential retirement at season's end. Later, as we congregated around the kitchen island for dinner, I transformed into an impromptu sports commentator, passionately preaching about the game’s disappointing details that led to failure and my favorite player’s fine qualities. Meanwhile, Jaz updated us on a friend's melodramatic breakup, with guesses that something ugly must have happened behind the scenes. Kath, ever the culinary enthusiast, not only served up her delicious pasta but also dished out the latest celebrity gossip, each tidbit as spicy as her sauce.
The next day, during a late breakfast at the same kitchen island—our unwitting oracle—we were hit by a triple whammy of reality checks. The news of my favorite player's retirement broke, echoing my gloomy predictions from the night before. Jaz chimed in with an update that our friend had uncovered a cheating scandal worthy of its own reality TV special. And Kath, never one to be left out of the drama: her favorite celebrity was now the star of a scandal.
By the third morning, as we sipped our coffee, the newspaper slapped me with another bizarre twist. I was going through the devastating economics and politics sections, then I saw the sports section——featured an irate coach, hell-bent on convincing my favorite player to dismiss retirement plans and keep his jersey on a little longer. Meanwhile, Jaz had good news for a change: it turned out our friend's love story might have a second act after all, as misunderstandings were being cleared up. Amidst these revelations, Kath, who had been grumbling about the nearby supermarket’s inability to stock anything remotely gourmet, and hadn’t had a taste of her favorite Blue Mountain coffee since the beginning of that year, triumphantly found a can of Blue Mountain coffee, and it was on sale and therefore affordable—proof that miracles happen, and sometimes they even go on discount.
As I sat there, absorbing the serendipity of our discussions manifesting into real-world events, I couldn't help but marvel at the mysterious knack of our kitchen island. Was it merely a coincidence, or had this stylish piece of decor become the unlikely conductor of our lives symphony? One thing was certain: life in apartment 606 was never dull, and our kitchen island seemed to be more than just a place to eat—it was a place where, apparently, you could stir the pot of fate.
I decided to conduct a whimsical experiment with our now seemingly magical kitchen island. Clearing my throat theatrically, I declared, "I should be interviewed for a director position." To my sheer astonishment, the next day a headhunter rang me up, claiming I was the ideal candidate for a directorial role at a prestigious corporation in my field. Despite the other candidates possessing decades more experience which defeated me with no effort, and my own lingering self-doubt from months of unemployment, I sailed to the final interview round with the company's executives.
Upon returning to our apartment, I found Kath flaunting a chic dress from a designer brand brand she’d snagged on clearance—a little luxury courtesy of our wish-granting island. Inspired, I approached the island and cheekily requested, "Get us jobs. Something fun." Lo and behold, the following day was spent lounging and binge-watching Netflix, only to be interrupted by a call from a former bigwig at my old job. He was venturing into a more illustrious company and wanted me onboard. The informal chat that followed was a breeze, and just like that, I was back in the game with a fancier title and a fatter paycheck.
The subsequent week was a flurry of celebrations. Jaz secured a senior-level position, and Kath landed her dream job at an influencer management agency. Feeling triumphant, we decided to indulge in a night of fine dining—our first in months. That Friday evening when I went from office to restaurant, on a whim, stopped at a convenience store to grab snacks and cigarettes for our post-dinner revelry. Outside, I encountered a homeless person. After offering him a sandwich (which he traded for a cigarette instead), he took a drag, peered into my eyes, and ominously muttered, “Look, young lady, this isn’t my business, but be wary of what you wish for; everything comes with a price. Good luck and god bless you.”
His words barely registered until later that evening when a mishap occurred that seemed to underline his warning. As we enjoyed syphon coffee post-dinner, a barista accidentally tripped over Kath’s flowing dress. The resulting spill left her with first-degree burns, abruptly ending our night as we rushed to the emergency room. Though it was "just" a first-degree burn, the pain was significant enough to require several days off for Kath’s recovery. Amid the drama, I couldn't help but wonder about the cryptic caution from the man outside the store—had our fortunate streak come with a hidden cost?
We chalked up the coffee calamity to bad luck. The next month flowed smoothly: Kath's fingers healed, she returned to work, and I quickly found my groove at the new job. With all of us gainfully employed, our communal meals at the kitchen island became rare. My mornings were a whirlwind of grabbing breakfast and coffee on the go, followed by an hour's commute to a job that had me scarfing down instant noodles by nightfall, just in time for a quick shower.
As the busy season kicked in, my workload ballooned—not just from the seasonal uptick, but because I was hell-bent on proving my mettle. I quickly outshone most of my peers, and my employer, recognizing a budding overachiever, piled on major tasks, which I eagerly accepted. What started as the occasional hour of overtime soon devoured my weekends. Unpaid overtime, as the fine print in my contract gleefully noted, became my new norm. Driven by a mix of ambition and expectation, I had become the go-to young hotshot, the erstwhile record-breaker now expected to continually outdo myself.
Mentally, I was too swamped to entertain thoughts of anything beyond work, which, in a twisted way, felt like a break. Physically, however, the strain began to show. A bout of flu caught on a business trip escalated into a fever. Sick as I was, deadlines waited for no one, and I soldiered on medicated and miserable. By the time I made it home, my voice had abandoned me. Unable to utter a word the next morning, I resorted to emailing my manager about my sorry state.
That week, robbed of my voice, I mused that it was perhaps a well-deserved hiatus for my overworked vocal cords—a silent retreat if you will. But when my voice did return, it was as a raspy whisper, a shadow of its former crisp and melodious timbre. My doctor offered a grim prognosis: slight improvement might come, but the golden tones were gone for good—scarred by the relentless grind. Ah, the price of ambition—a scratchy throat as a permanent reminder of my corporate conquests.
It seemed I had unwittingly exchanged the clarity of my voice for the tumult of career success. In the midst of our domestic enchantment with the possibly mystical kitchen island, Kath unearthed the contact of a reputed psychic, hailed as the finest in the land. However, the consultation fee was nothing short of princely, and with Jaz vehemently dismissing anything that couldn't be explained by cold, hard science, she promptly opted out of splitting the bill. Kath and I, unwilling to drain our wallets on what could be mere phantasmagoria, reluctantly let the opportunity pass.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t help but notice a curious change in Jaz’s routine. She had ceased dining at the kitchen island, avoiding it as if it were cursed—or perhaps, in her view, simply out of style. The Saturday morning brought a particularly harsh twist: a murder of crows took to spiralling above our balcony, their cries as sharp as the plot of a Poe novel. We found ourselves drawn to the infamous kitchen island, lined up like the cast of a macabre play, silently praying for the birds to disperse. Kath, ever trying to restore some semblance of normalcy, offered up cups of Blue Mountain coffee. She absentmindedly inquired if I wanted cream or sugar in mine—a blunder that made me realize just how long it had been since our last coffee klatch at this very spot. My inner monologue couldn't resist a dark wish for the crows to scatter, perhaps too dark, for they began to dive bomb our balcony in a feathery kamikaze. The spectacle was enough to knock Jaz off her feet—literally—as her mug met its end on the floor. Kath, meanwhile, made a hasty retreat to worship the porcelain god, and I sat frozen, my brain offline, pondering the twisted power of our kitchen island's apparent wish-granting.
After the unnerving spectacle of crows turning our balcony into a scene straight out of a Hitchcock film, our first rational step—post-collective fainting, of course—was to summon cleaners to manage the feathery carnage. Then, still rattled but increasingly curious, we visited a psychic, who, contrary to the crystal-ball-gazer image, operated out of a posh boutique in a high-end mall and dressed more like she was headed to a fashion show than a séance. We laid bare our saga of the seemingly cursed kitchen island, complete with photographic evidence of where domestic bliss meets eerie phenomena.
The psychic introduced a term that chilled the air around us: “limbo,” the threshold between our world and the otherworldly, and she dubbed our kitchen island the "Devil’s Bargain Counter." According to her, our wishes came with a heavy and unpredictable price, because we have accidentally started trades with beings from the netherworld. Her advice was disarmingly simple: cease all trades on the island. To address the repercussions of past wishes, she advised us the first line of defence, which was an eclectic mix of offerings laid out on our cursed countertop: raw meat(rooster works the best), a cocktail of spices(coca and cinnamon preferably), liberal splashes of spirits(whiskey and rum ideally), and an eerie bouquet of black flowers(luckily I found some black roses at a flower shop of the mall). In a grander gesture of appeasement, Kath relinquished her shiny new diamond bracelet, Jaz her absurdly expensive headphones, and I parted with cash—— a hefty slice of my bonus in hopes of placating whatever capricious spirits we'd angered.
Our return to normalcy was brief but sweet, prompting us to plan a getaway, eager to forget about our nefarious kitchen island. Yet, the respite was merely a tease. Jaz, in a stroke of spectacular misfortune, narrowly dodged disaster twice in one day—first nearly becoming subway track fodder on her way back after work, and then almost getting knocked out by a rogue plant at our apartment building’s doorstep. Clearly, our previous offerings were mere appetizers to whatever forces we'd stirred. The psychic, summoned once again to our now-dubious sanctuary, decreed that the spirits had developed rather expensive tastes, unsatisfied by our initial gestures.
In a desperate bid for closure, we had the psychic over for a nighttime ritual, timed perfectly with Earth's closest approach to the netherworld, according to her. Our living room turned into a ritual chamber, with windows blacked out for days, to keep the otherworldly dealings strictly nocturnal. That night, we arranged ourselves around the island, now less a kitchen fixture and more an altar of last resort.
The psychic, amidst a chorus of Latin incantations, directed us through a chilling séance that included a mirror that reflected nothing but darkness and a burning black candle, the three of us sat in a row, joined hands, eyes closed. When the black candle was flickering at its last, the first eerie scratches heard prompted our eyes to open prematurely, we saw a command appear on the island, written by invisible hand and pen, in blood-red script, urging us to find the next "succeeder" before our lease on otherworldly disturbances could be terminated.
With bated breath, we agreed, and as if by magic, our signatures materialized on the countertop, then faded as the candle sputtered out. We tore off the black cardboard taped on the windows at dawn, the sunrise revealed a final message etched into the surface: "Debt cleared." As the daylight grew, the ominous inscription dissolved into nothingness, signalling the end of our spectral saga.
The ordeal, now officially behind us, left us enjoying a semblance of normalcy: life in 606 returned to its mundane rhythm, with dinners and movie nights back on our social calendar. Though not without its scars—literal and figurative.
It’s been two years since then, Jaz, in the throes of romantic bliss, is now gearing up for a new chapter waiting to be written alongside her soon-to-be spouse; Kath, her career finally taking a lucrative turn, was poised to upgrade her living situation, she secured a lease on a lavish serviced apartment in the city center—a place that matched her newfound financial swagger.
I’m not without my own leaps forward. With a modest boost from my parents, I took the plunge into homeownership, snagging a property within the city’s vibrant confines. The process was a whirlwind of paperwork and decorating decisions, culminating in a space I could truly call my own.
As we are packing up now, my last act is to type out our story, at the infamous island, and of course, I left a note in the fridge for the next tenants:
"Welcome to 606. We had a wonderful time here, especially at the kitchen island, filled with joy and unforgettable moments. We hope you find as much happiness as we did. Use the isle well. Warm wishes, the previous tenants."

Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers: A Recap of Ice Hockey's Theatre of the Absurd

On a night that could only be described as a puck-filled pandemonium, the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers clashed in a game that was less a display of athletic prowess and more a comedic ballet on ice. The date was May 12, 2024, and fans in attendance were treated to a spectacle that would have made the Bard himself chuckle from the great rink in the sky.

Act I: The Odds of Misfortune

Before the puck even dropped, the bookmakers had spoken, and their prophecy was clear: the Florida Panthers, with odds at a commanding 1.49, were the darlings of the betting world (DraftKings, 2024; FanDuel, 2024). The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, were the underdogs, the scrappy fighters with odds set at a less-than-favorable 2.7 (DraftKings, 2024; FanDuel, 2024). Little did the oddsmakers know, they were setting the stage for an evening of slapstick surprises.

Act II: The Slapstick Spectacle

As the game commenced, it became apparent that the Bruins and Panthers had decided to throw the script out the window. Passes went awry, skates tangled, and the puck seemed to have a mind of its own, bouncing with the unpredictability of a caffeinated squirrel. The players, in their quest for hockey glory, appeared more like actors in a silent film, providing the audience with a series of pratfalls and gags that would make Charlie Chaplin proud.

The Keystone Cops on Skates

The first period was a masterclass in physical comedy. Defensemen tripped over blue lines, forwards mistook the referee's skates for the puck, and goalies—those stoic sentinels of the net—flailed like windmills in a hurricane. It was as if both teams had conspired to redefine the term "power play" to mean "the power to play the fool."

The Jesters of the Jersey

As the game wore on, the players seemed to embrace their roles as jesters in jerseys. One particularly memorable moment involved a Panther attempting a slapshot, only to have his stick shatter upon impact, sending the rubber disk skittering harmlessly to the corner while the splintered shaft helicoptered into the stands. The crowd roared with laughter, and the bewildered player could only offer a sheepish grin.

Act III: The Numbers Narrate Nonsense

In a game where the stats sheet read more like a comedy script, the numbers told a tale of two teams who seemed to forget the objective of hockey. Shots on goal were more miss than hit, and the penalty minutes stacked up as if the players were competing for a record in the most creative ways to earn a trip to the sin bin.

The Statistician's Lament

For the number-crunchers and stat aficionados, this game was a nightmare wrapped in a riddle. Attempting to analyze the performance metrics was akin to deciphering the meaning of a Dadaist poem. Yet, amidst the chaos, there were glimmers of actual hockey being played—brief, fleeting moments where muscle memory overcame the madness, and the puck found its way to the back of the net.

Act IV: The Final Curtain

As the final buzzer sounded, the score was almost an afterthought. The real victory was in the entertainment provided, the laughs shared, and the collective realization that sometimes, sports can be a delightful diversion from the seriousness of life.
The Panthers may have been the victors on paper, but the true winners were those who witnessed this absurd ballet of sticks and skates. It was a game that would be talked about for years to come, not for the skill displayed, but for the sheer joyous lunacy of it all.

Epilogue: The Moral of the Story

In the grand scheme of things, this game between the Bruins and Panthers will be remembered not for its impact on the standings or the record books, but for its contribution to the rich tapestry of hockey hilarity. It was a reminder that even in the competitive cauldron of professional sports, there is room for laughter, for the unexpected, and for the sheer, unadulterated fun of the game.
So let us raise our sticks to the Bruins and Panthers, not for their prowess on the ice, but for their unwitting performance in the theatre of the absurd. May the memories of this game endure, a testament to the unpredictable joy of hockey and the enduring power of a good chuckle.

2024.05.12 20:03 Efficient-Forever341 In memory of... (Do You remember who died on May 13, 2014 in Chicago Fire?)

In memory of Leslie Shay
10 years ago, on May 13, 2014, Leslie Shay (played by Lauren German), the fan-favorite character of the NBC studio's series Chicago Fire, died in the finale of the second season. True, viewers only learned about this when the third season started. The death of the character was followed by an uproar from the audience, the popularity of the series (which had been on the rise until then) and the number of viewers decreased, because many people stopped watching the series due to Shay's death, including the author of this post (I reached the end of the third season). Due to the anniversary, I started researching on the Internet to better understand why Shay's character was destined for this fate, and using quite a few references and also abundant with spoilers, I will share with everyone what I came up with in this post. I will also write my own opinion.
(I apologize for any grammatical errors, I did not write the post in English and I created the English version with the help of Google Translate)
Shay's character probably doesn't need to be introduced to anyone, but if you do, this link nicely summarizes why everyone loved her so much.
https://screenrant.com/chicago-fire-leslie-shay-lauren-german-best-traits-facts-trivia/
When I started researching the topic, I read that despite the fact that Chicago Fire is already in its 13th season, Shay remains one of the most loved and most missed characters to this day. However, later, when I wrote the post, I could not find the source again, if anyone can send a link to this topic, please do so.
It is clear that if the series loses such a popular character, it will have an impact and will shake the viewers. Well, it turns out, more than anything in the show's 13 seasons. I found a lot of sources to prove this:
1)
People's Choice Awards, USA, 2015 / Favorite TV Character We Miss Most
In the above category, Shay made it to the top 5, which no one else did later.

Most shocking TV deaths of all time

Shay is also included in the top 100 list above, as well as two other characters from the entire One Chicago franchise, Elias Koteas as Alvin Olinsky and Yuri Sardarov as Otis. Thus, Shay was on a list with the likes of Teri Bauer (24), Lance Sweets (Bones), Bobby Ewing (Dallas) or Ned Stark (GoT)

And this is what ChatGPT answered when it was asked which of the characters in Chicago Fire had the most heartbreaking death (short quote from the answer):
"The most heartbreaking character death was definitely Leslie Shay. Oh, it was gut-wrenching! Shay, played by the incredibly talented Lauren German, was such a beloved and integral member of Firehouse 51....."

If I use the Google Search service, the answer to this search will also be Shay:
Question: "chicago fire most heartbreaking death"
Answer: "Leslie Shay died in a fire"
Searching the internet, it became clear to me that it wasn't just Shay's death that shocked viewers, but also the fact that the show's creators made the decision to get rid of Shay's character. This decision raised many questions and problems, which I will go through below. There are a lot of posts and articles on the internet about why Lauren German left the series, but in fact they were all based on a single, otherwise amazingly short interview that was made with Matt Olmstead. I found this at this link:
https://tvline.com/interviews/lauren-german-leaving-chicago-fire-shay-killed-off-549958/
If anyone has seen or read other interviews or other information, please share them.
I read a lot of comments under the link above, and I would like to thank everyone for expressing their opinions there. I read a lot of things in the comments that I didn't even think of at first, but it's good that they brought them to my attention, because I completely agreed with them.
  1. The creators of the series killed off the third female character in 2 seasons, who was also one of the main characters.
  2. Killing a character directly just for the sake of dramatic effect is already quite a boring solution
  3. Olmstead praised Lauren German's talent a lot in the interview, but then why didn't the producers try to keep the actress?
  4. Olmstead stated that there will be no flashbacks involving Shay. But in the first episode there were 4 (from Severide, Dawson and Boden)
  5. The LGBT community also received a slap in the face, as an openly lesbian character was killed off. This is also a solution that has been seen many times and is boring.
  6. Shay and Severide's relationship was one of the prominent aspects of the series, which made it worth watching, in fact, according to many, it was such a novel and well-constructed thread that the creators of the series were praised for this. After Shay's death, without the dynamism of their relationship, the series became boring.
  7. Opinions also suggested that perhaps the goal was to attract the right target audience with Shay's lesbian character, but they no longer wanted to retain this group of viewers, so it was a harsh decision made from a business point of view by the creators
  8. Olmstead defended the decision by saying that they could bring more and more storylines into the series, while without Shay's character, the exact opposite was true.
  9. He also claimed that all the characters were assessed on equal footing when the decision was made. In comparison, they immediately replaced Shay with a new character who looked like her, was not a lesbian like Shay, and was 10 years younger. Because Lauren German was born in 1978, Kara Killmer in 1988. The message of this change was extremely bad in the eyes of the viewers
  10. There was a commenter who suggested that the change was made so that the new character could be romantically involved with one of the male characters, and this actually happened during the third season when Brett and Cruz got together
  11. If the purpose of Shay's death was to show how unpredictable life is, they should have paid much more attention to the details. The first part of the third season is full of mistakes and unrealistic solutions
  12. It is strange that the interview only mentions in a few sentences what Lauren said to the fact that the creators of the series essentially fired her. In connection with this, it occurred to me that something else could have been behind the decision, which was never made public, but of course this is just a hunch.
  13. As far as I know, Lauren German was the only main character in the history of Chicago Fire who did not leave the series by her own decision
There were many other strange things about Shay's death that could be found by searching the internet. I will also go through these in order.
A)
Let's return briefly to the fact that the popularity of the series decreased during the third season. This can be checked here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_(franchise))
Based on this, it can be definitely stated that whoever made this decision, for whatever reason, caused damage to the series.
The data:
First season, ranking 51, number of viewers 7.78M
Second season, ranking 31, number of viewers 9.70M
Third season, ranking 47, number of viewers 9.65M
The first season brought good numbers, and it can be seen from the data that its popularity increased for the next season. However, the ranking of the series dropped almost to the initial level by the third season, and although the number of viewers did not decrease so significantly, the reason for this is probably that, in addition to the viewers who left, there were still those who only joined at that time. Another interesting fact is that the third season is the only one where Dick Wolf is mentioned as showrunner. It is possible that during the third season he wanted to be more involved in the development of the story, and it was his decision to pull something unexpected in the series, so Shay's death is due to him. Here is a show-like interview with the whole team, in which I found it strange that Dick Wolf was given the central place on the stage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2tCrma7t5o&t=2s
It was as if they suggested that he was the most important person. It can be imagined that he always had the final say in making decisions. As a counter-example, I saw an interview with the actors of The Avengers, where one of the directors was present, and the Russo brother remained nicely in the background, since everyone was interested in the actors, Iron Man, and Thor, etc. However, this was not the case in this interview. Obviously, I'm not a behavioral researcher, so I can't draw important conclusions from a single interview.
Of course, it is also easy to imagine that the writing team made an independent decision, but did not count on how much the omission of Shay's character would turn fans away from the series. Thus, Dick Wolf was the savior when he was forced to intervene personally in shaping the story to mitigate the damage. Of course, it is also possible that these events and what I wrote about the video above have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
B)
It's also strange how many storylines with negative outcomes were connected to Shay's character during the first 2 seasons. She was seriously injured several times (the ambulance accident in the first season, the hospital bombing in the second season), and she went through several crises in her personal life. Her first love, Clarice, left her, and months later she broke Shay's heart a second time. Devon tricked and robbed her. When Severide and Shay wanted a baby, she failed to conceive. A patient of her, Daryl, whom she sympathized with, committed suicide in front of her eyes, and Shay also fell into depression after that, while her paramedic partner and friend, Dawson, did not care about Shay's mental breakdown at all. During the two seasons, she was almost hit by a car, almost shot, stabbed with a syringe, which could have been contagious, and there must have been other cases that I left out of the list. Then came the third season, where basically the firefighters who were inside a huge explosion were not hurt at all, while Shay, who was on the ground floor of the building, died in this explosion. On the part of the writers, this amount of negativism was perhaps already excessive and quite unrealistic (like the case of Doctor Romano in ER, who was hit by the helicopter). It's like the creators didn't really like the character, or didn't want to do anything with her other than build viewers' empathy / sympathy for Shay so they could switch it to a dramatic twist when the time was right. But that's the opposite of good storytelling in my view. My opinion is that the reason for Shay's popularity is not to be found in the "grateful" storylines written for her, because we will find it only and exclusively in the fantastic performance of Lauren German
C)
It's very strange that Leslie Shay was a main character in the first 2 seasons, but if you look at the Instagram page of the series (more specifically, the entire One Chicago franchise), you can see that Shay's character received very little attention.
https://www.instagram.com/nbconechicago/
At the time of writing this post, there were 3588 posts on the site. I took the trouble to check if my hunch was right and scrolled through to the posts about the first 3 seasons.
Number of pictures where Shay is clearly visible among many people in a group picture: 15
Number of photos where Shay is with 1-2 other people: 27
Number of photos featuring only Shay: 6
Yes, I didn't write a bad number, among 3588 pictures a total of 6 individual photos were given to one of the main characters of the first 2 seasons of the series, perhaps the most popular character of the series to date. Although Lauren German is a famously reclusive actress, she even has more selfies on her Instagram than that
D)
It's also very strange that in the third season they introduced a storyline that says Shay's death was caused by arson. Unfortunately, the execution of all this was extremely clumsy and illogical for me. It was already revealed during the first 2 seasons that Shay's parents are divorced, they live in two separate cities, and that she has no sisters. You could tell this from the fact that when Severide and Shay talked about who would take care of their baby if something happened to both of them, Dawson's name immediately came up. It's illogical that Shay wouldn't have said her sister. In fact, the whole thread felt more like a readjusting to placate fans who would channel their frustration and anger over Shay's death onto the arsonist in the story - instead of the show's writers.
E)
It occurred to me that maybe Lauren's relationship with her colleagues was not good, and for the sake of peace, the creators got rid of the character. This suggestion is probably the furthest from reality, I have a lot of hits that prove that Lauren maintained a very good relationship with her co-stars even later. Here are some examples of this

In real life, Kinney is grieving the loss of his costar, too.
"I miss her like crazy," he said about Lauren German. "She was a great scene partner. Great actor. Someone to work with and someone to confide in. It was an honest relationship. We hung out off the stages, too. I didn’t take that too easy.”
F)
It's also interesting that I've been able to find almost nothing online about what Lauren thought about what happened to Leslie Shay's character. What we do know from Matt Olmstead's interview is that she joked that she wasn’t going to miss the Chicago winters (she’s a California girl). Other than that, this is the only reaction from Lauren that can still be found, it's completely professional and polite, and perhaps it's no coincidence that she thanked the fans the most for their support
https://cartermatt.com/133627/chicago-fire-season-3-lauren-german-speaks-shay-premiere-shocke
"Hello beautiful people! I want to say thank you to NBC, Dick Wolf and the entire team for letting me be a part of such an amazing experience. I have to say I've never been around a more gifted, special, heartfelt, funny and loving cast and crew as with the CF gang. The show gave me so many priceless gifts. I'm forever grateful. I mostly want to thank the fans for their support and love on this journey. You all are so beautiful. It was a great honor to portray Shay. I love her: her spirit, her flaws, her honesty. And most of all she brought me the most genuine & meaningful interactions with you all, the fans, & my heart swells with gratitude. Thank you, thank you! So much love to you all.”
F) UPDATE
I just found this article, which for some reason didn't come up amongst the search results for the past few weeks.
https://chicago.suntimes.com/2016/1/22/18408021/chicago-fire-alum-lauren-german-having-devilishly-good-time-on-lucifer
In this article, Lauren told a sweet story that I believe happened during the filming of the pilot episode of Lucifer:
Given her time on “Chicago Fire,” guest starring on “Chicago P.D.” and now on “Lucifer,” has German changed the way she reads about or watches crime stories in the news?
“I think so, but mainly I think my experiences have made me have even more respect for first responders than I did before I went to Chicago. Sure, I always respected them and paid attention when I’d see a fire truck going by or hear about the cops getting the bad guy.
“But after the training we went through with the firemen and paramedics in Chicago — plus now having worked with homicide detectives to prepare for ‘Lucifer’ — I can’t tell you how much I respect these guys and women.”
German found herself the butt of a few jokes during the filming of a huge scene in Los Angeles near the Dolby Theatre — the site of the annual Oscars show.
“There were helicopters flying overhead, there was all this commotion, but we also had real firemen there. It wasn’t too long after I left ‘Chicago Fire,’ so they were yelling at me, ‘You went to the dark side!’ They were really kidding me about going from playing a paramedic to playing detective.
“Of course the cops on the scene were yelling just the opposite — telling me, ‘No! You’ve come to the bright side!’ I loved that, because that’s the fun friendly competition between the firemen and police officers. It’s kind of like Army vs. Navy.
“But of course, at the end of the day, everyone’s on the same team. These people are my heroes.”
In addition, she also talked about her previous work here, based on which it can be stated that the rumors that she wanted to quit are completely unfounded (I considered this suggestion so unfounded that I didn't even include it in my post). She also confirmed what was also discussed in point E).
German did admit she misses “the whole Chicago crew I worked with — and the wonderful fans in Chicago too. Everyone in your town is so great.”
The actress said she considers co-star Monica Raymund “my best girlfriend” and also keeps up with fellow “Chicago Fire” castmates Taylor Kinney and Jesse Spencer “quite a bit.”
“In fact just the other day, Monica asked me that after I wrap [the initial 13 episodes of] ‘Lucifer’ to come over [to Chicago] for a few days and hang out with those guys. So I may do that around the end of February.”
If so, it’s likely German and her “Chicago Fire” pals will make a beeline to the Palm restaurant on East Wacker Drive.
“Taylor and Jesse and I lived in the same building [on the New East Side], and we’d go to the Palm like three times a week. It was so cozy there. We even had our own regular little booth!”
End of update
In regards to the oddities above, I can even imagine that Lauren's agent or agents had a hard time agreeing on a possible contract extension, and because of this, the creators preferred to get rid of the character of Shay. If that was the case, we will never know. However, if the decision-making really took place in the way and according to the criteria as stated in the Matt Olmstead interview, then it can be seen in retrospect that this was an extremely bad decision by the studio and that the writing team made a huge mistake
I am slowly coming to the end of my research, but before that I would like to discuss the mistakes that the writers made in the first part of the third season - perhaps these mistakes could indicate that they were very hasty during the implementation, or that they did not think through at all how to put together such an episode well. When an average viewer saw this episode for the first time, the shock was guaranteed by it (believe me, it HITS HARD), in this way the creators achieved their goal, but it was enough later to think about what happened, and the shock was already replaced by completely legitimate indignation of the viewing public.
Regarding the mistakes, for the sake of fairness, I also have to say that I consider 4 things to be extremely outstanding from the first 2 seasons of the series:
1)
The visual implementation of the series was amazingly fantastic, as if you were watching a 45-minute movie, and it still stands today. I don't know if this changed after the third season, but I assume not, since the series is still active today
2)
Atli Örvarsson's music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ABsDFMJr2E&list=PLXT2pBWM8DxfN4znwe3esSqg4LtBzlQz8
3)
The actors Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Barnett, David Eigenberg, Eamonn Walker, Joe Minoso, Yuriy Sardarov, Christian Stolte were all fantastic in their roles
4)
The writers did something really brilliant when they built Severide and Shay's relationship. The way these two people moved mountains just out of love as a friend to help the other was simply wonderful. The relationship between the two of them was central to the show, which is why it was so painful and infuriating at the same time that the writers didn't think it was important enough to keep it going after 2 seasons. So I didn't consider the series important enough to continue watching after the third season either, or to start anything else from the One Chicago group.
Mistakes in S03 E01:
Devon's character:
  • In the last 2 episodes of the second season, it was revealed that Devon might not be as a bad person as we thought. The writers hinted at the possibility that maybe Shay could finally find her happiness with her. Whether Devon had really changed, whether she was telling the truth, was never revealed after Shay's death.
Shay's death:
  • Why didn't the paramedics wear helmets when they entered a potentially dangerous building? In other episodes, the characters paid attention to this, but here they generously forgot about it
  • During the first flashback, we saw that they started to treat an injured person. When the explosion occurred and Shay was lying on the ground, the injured person was disappeared.
  • The firefighter (played by Preston James Hillier) who ran into the building before the explosion also disappeared
  • In the flashback, we saw that Dawson was thrown backwards by the shock wave of the explosion before the ceiling collapsed. Shay, on the other hand, sat still, unaffected by the shock wave
  • The firefighting team was in the middle of the explosion, the only injury in comparison was a broken leg. Andy Darden died instantly in the Pilot episode, according to the script, when a house fire started in a similar way.
  • Shay's CPR was interrupted to take her to the ambulance. At the same time, the one who could have taken care of her was Dawson, who was next to her, and Shay herself, maybe even Mills, who had a broken leg. So why was it important to take Shay to the ambulance, if not because it gave the scene a dramatic, albeit illogical, ending?
  • Several people (e.g. Cruz, Otis) in the episode did not behave like those who recently lost a friend, and this could not be the fault of the actors, but rather of the script. The situation was similarly strange in the Pilot episode after Darden's death
  • Shay said that she has a good relationship with her parents, so it's very strange that they didn't apply for Shay's things, but Casey and Severide collected them a month and a half after Shay's death. Not to mention the later invented sister
  • When Severide looked at a photo of Shay before playing the video, it can be seen that the creators did not bother to take a real photo, but instead used a screenshot from the first season.
  • It's quite unlikely that Dawson would pick up a diary a month and a half later that still had Shay's signature on it, and the signatures were completely different
Again, in the interest of fairness, Severide's flashbacks, Severide and Shay's video were flawless. Just like the gesture of putting Shay's name on the ambulance door in the middle of the season was a great idea from the writers
Final thoughts:
This is how far I've come in my research. Unfortunately, I didn't find any reassuring answers, only strange things. If there was something else in the background why Shay's character had to die, it will probably never be revealed. If the whole truth was told in the Matt Olmstead interview, then in my opinion the creators of Chicago Fire made the biggest mistake of their lives by firing Lauren and letting the Shayveride friendship vanish. Plus, Leslie Shay's character didn't deserve such fate. Anyway, the first 2 seasons were a fantastic experience for me.
Although Lauren couldn't have known it at the time, she was doing very well, because after being unemployed, she auditioned for the role of Chloe Decker in the series Lucifer. Here she joined the team that involved Tom Ellis, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Scarlett Estevez, and later Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Tom Welling, Inbar Lavi, Rebecca De Mornay, Dennis Haysbert and Brianna Hildebrand. The rest, as they say, is history. Lucifer was the biggest series of 2021 by racking a whopping 18.3 billion minutes of streaming across the year making the series the most-streamed show not just on Netflix, but among the entire crop of streaming originals. Lucifer was voted the best fantasy series of 2021 also, and Lauren German became very, very worldwide-famous.
https://netflixlife.com/2022/01/26/lucifer-best-netflix-show-2021/
After Lucifer ended, Lauren retired from acting, making her last appearance in November 2023 at an event in Chicago, the Heaven and Hell Convention. Here, of course, she was hilarious again, or to put it stylistically, funny as hell, and she simply proved why she was the actress who played Leslie Shay back then

1004/--Lee Harvey Oswald Is A Member of the Black Eye Club= 223--proof the Kennedy Assassination was Fake
JOHN F KENNEDY IS SHOT FROM TEXAS SCHOOL BOOK DEPOSITORY= 666
In this post I discuss various inconsistencies in the Oswald /Kennedy Fake assassination
First clue-- Oswald was photographed with a Black Left eye immediately he was arrested outside the movie theatre
Right away they sent a signal for those in the Know --that this was a BS script
BLACK EYED CLUB SIGNAL= 322
One of the reporters already at the arrest scene-- made a point of asking Oswald about his Black eye
Is that really the first question you ask the man suspected of shooting the president

The Black Eyed Club is an internet conspiracy theory which claims celebs with black eye are initiates of the Globalist cabal
Its always the Left Eye
Of course this conspiracy theory was written by the Spooks themselves to play the public
These photos are most likely photoshopped
What they symbolize is the One Eye-- All seeing eye-- Freemasons
Its a signalling stunt like everything else

One theory is that they get a black eye when injecting adrenochrome
Adrenochrome is another obvious Globalist lie--misdirection--& to scare the public

when they use numerology--then you know the Spooks are behind it

what a coincidence-- Jack Ruby who shot Oswald-- also had a hidden 9/11 in his mug shot

.
Oswald claimed he had lunch in the Domino Room of the Book Depository
This is code for Marine Corps--when they introduce unusual names into the narrative you know its part of a script

JFK's ASSASSIN LEE HARVEY OSWALD= 322
BLACK EYED CLUB SIGNAL= 322
LEE HARVEY OSWALD IS A MEMBER OF THE BLACK EYED CLUB= 223
.
Ask yourselves why Oswald was provided with a change of clothes---he was only in custody for 2 days
He was arrested wearing a white T shirt & jacket
But when he was shot-- he was wearing a white shirt & dark jumper
A dark jumper hides the flack of blood-- no bullet--- no blood

In the photo below--Oswald is placed on a guernsey before being taken to Parkland Hospital where JFK 'died'
Where's the blood---we see no blood stains on his white shirt--yet he was shot in the gut--no sign of blood anywhere---no blood on his hands

Of course Oswald shot the police officer at 1:15 pm

why the unusual name Book Depository-- to make the numerology work of course--
TEXAS BOOK DEPOSITORY= 255

ABRAHAM LINCOLN= 255
.
Abraham Lincoln was shot by an ACTOR in a theater--his assassin was run to ground in a warehouse
JFK was shot in Lincoln limousine from a warehouse-- his assassin run to ground in a theatre
Both fake assassinations-- parallel scripts
Whats the point od staging a fake assassination--same reason they demolished the Twin Towers
The US was about to enter into various Asian wars-- Vietnam Cambodia Laos etc-- so they staged this stunt to prove to other world leaders they were in total control of the Govt, Police, Military, Media & Public Perception

And they changed the second half of the script to make it about Gaza/ Israel.
In germany protests against Israel often use the phrase
"KINDERMÖRDER ISRAEL" - child killers Israel
The actors incorporated a scene where the chickens on the farm run across the stage calling the pigs child killers for selling their eggs. They started yelling KINDERMÖRDER over and over again and everyone in the theatre sort of realised it was a jab at Israel using that phrase repeatedly. Even if they left out the Israel part of the slogan.
Kudos to them for standing up because that sort of thing is so heavily taboo here

2024.05.12 00:00 Southie31 Year of the 🐉 Dragon, 1985

Year of the 🐉 Dragon, 1985
Screenplay co written by Oliver Stone and starring Mickey Rourke. The Godfather producers, under pressure from Joe Colombo’s Italian American anti Discrimination League , removed the word “ mafia” from the script. 1985s Year of the Dragon 🐉 actually had a disclaimer in the opening credits 👀. I don’t remember being aware of the disclaimer when it was released in theatres but after witnessing Hollywoods portrayals of Boston ( particularly SouthBoston ) a few years later, I completely understand 😂😂😂

2024.05.11 17:13 throwaway9999276263 I don't know what to do anymore

I'm 20 and directing a play, I feel like an imposter here. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, and every time I try to communicate my ideas I can't because my ADHD is so fucking bad.
I have so much responsibility and so little time to figure it out, and we've already spent like 80% of our budget on the rights / scripts alone. I have no idea what to do. I just want to quit, I want to quit and hide.
I should've had a plan, I should've had a fucking set sketched out already, and I should've had blocking notes or notes in general but I just don't. Every time rehearsal ends I have forgotten anything that I would've said as notes because I didn't write it down, or I forgot to write to down and got distracted by another idea.
I feel a lot of pressure too since this is a show very different from the types of shows this theatre usually does.
God I don't know what to do, I just feel so out of place and disorganized. I want to quit.

2024.05.11 06:01 Infamous-Interest52 I can’t like the show since they changed Ricky’s disability.

Hi! I am a disabled actor and playwright. I have cerebral palsy and use leg braces.
Disabled representation in theatre is incredibly important to me, having faced a ton of ableism in productions and also being a writer. So when i found RTC, i was incredibly happy and excited.
Obviously Ricky was not perfect, there’s something to be said about the removal of his mobility aids throughout the entire show, painting mobility aids as a bad thing. (Mobility aids aren’t restrictive, they are tools!) I understand curing his disability in the context of the show and him being dead, but the curing of disabled people is a tired, redundant and often dangerous trope. If not played with incredibly careful direction, it can quickly lean into eugenics territory. Even without meaning to.
That being said, I still adored Ricky. I love him. I love his character and how authentically himself he is. I was incredibly proud to be so simliar to him, and finally felt represented in media that was really gaining popularity. My experience with Ricky is living proof that representation matters.
This was quickly taken away with the ableism from one production, and his disability being written out of the script. I was heartbroken. This was unsurprising due to the amount of ableism in the arts community, but nothing short of horrific. It was such a deep form of erasure. And i was even more sad at how most fans of the show didn’t even say anything, didn’t stick up for the disabled community, and idolized the show despite this issue. It’s another example in a long string of disabled people being ignored, being treated like we’re subhuman. Disabled activism and representation is so neglected because we’re still viewed as abnormal. Being disabled is a part of human diversity, and Ricky was important to that. I was so excited for young disabled kids in theatre to have a character that I never got. And that was taken away without an additional thought towards the disability community. Once again, we were used as a plot vessel for Ricky’s character and got taken away when it got “difficult” - as soon as you actually have to start caring about disabled lives, start thinking of theatre accessibility, that’s when it gets too difficult.
I love RTC, i really do. I think it’s one of the best original musicals in the past 15 years. Its plot is innovative and creative, its score is gorgeous. The ensemble is just brilliant. I think it’s a great show.
But i will never like it the same again. I will never feel the same passion i did for it when Ricky was disabled. And i think this is something that deserves to be voiced in the community. RTC is brilliant, but this is a deep stain on the show as a whole.

ABIGAIL THORN’S THE PRINCE IS COMING TO AMERICA ON MAY 31ST AND JUNE 1ST
Hello everyone! I’m the director of the first United States production of The Prince. This play has been a wild ride so far and I’m so excited to bring it to fruition. Feel free in the comments to ask me any questions! The production opens on May 31st and June 1st at the Barking Legs Theatre in Chattanooga, TN. I feel the location of the play is very important. Not only because it is where I grew up, but in the context of The Prince it’s a testament to the artistic drive of the queer community of the region. The American South is often depicted as a place of hopelessness when it comes to LGBT rights and representation. Some of this hopelessness is founded on a lot of truth. The legislation in Tennessee and surrounding states are among some of the most draconic in the country. However, we are still here and we’ve got a story that shows the world a slice of our experiences. Now representation is not liberation, but with projects like this and Obvious Dad’s 2023 Production of Sagittarius Ponderosa show the true spirit of the queer community in Chattanooga. Despite the hardships, we prevail, and we’re not going anywhere.
If you are in the Chattanooga area around opening night, consider coming to support the show. It’s an amazing script and deserves the love of as many eyes as we can get into the venue.

2024.05.10 23:04 Mooncalf22 Series 9 Episode 1 - Boo To A Goose - Review (mild spoilers)

After eight seasons of impeccable television, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are doing their final celebratory lap with this, their ninth and (appropriately enough) final season of Inside No.9. Kicking off with one of the strongest ensemble pieces of the series, my immediate impression is that we are back in safe hands.
It’s a situation all London residents will be familiar with, a homeless man asking for money on the last train home. It brings out the best and worst in society, and helpfully for a 30 minute programme, a person’s reaction often tells you all you need to know about them. Some are dismissive, some do the pantomime of patting their pockets, some actually give money, while some are visibly irritated at the mere question.
The premise is so neat and so apt for Inside No.9 that you wonder why we haven’t had this episode before. Nine strangers are stuck on a train inbetween stations, when one passenger has her purse stolen in a brief blackout. The rest of the episode follows the search for the culprit, as well as revealing each character’s outlooks and prejudices in a politically charged debate.
There’s an episode of The Twilight Zone called Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up? about a group of bus passengers who get stranded in a diner, only when the driver counts heads, he finds there’s one passenger too many. Oh and one of them is an alien. It’s one of the great episodes of the series, and the reason it works so well is the ensemble. Boo To A Goose holds it’s cards very close to it’s chest for most of its runtime, but this is the feeling that it drew out of me, a compelling mystery where at least one character is not who they appear to be. In fact more than one, as the episode masterfully pulls back layers of characterisation to reveal the hidden traits of it;s characters, from the bitter drag queen (Steve Pemberton) to the withdrawn paranoiac (Joel Fry) each character is expertly portrayed. Matthew Kelly’s deranged old man is even reminiscent of the character played by Jack Elam in the Twilight Zone episode.
The entire cast is superb as you might expect by now. Siobhan Finneran is a stand-out as the exasperated wife of the meek Gerald (Shearsmith), himself a former firebrand union man who has withdrawn into a quiet life of amdram theatre outings, much to her frustration. Finneran gives a lovely portrayal of someone determined to do the right thing, breaking free of the enforced conformity of her quiet life, whatever polite society may dictate. Philippa Dunne is also great as the mild-mannered, empathetic nurse – effectively playing a variation of her character from Motherland.
Steve Pemberton gives one of his most intricate performances as an unapologetically callous character, someone who has taken all the wrong lessons from the adversity he has faced in the past. He drops hilariously lewd puns left right and centre, and has an unfeeling attitude to those less fortunate than him, but the script takes a pretty considered approach to the character. Pemberton might play the comedy broadly, but he never loses sight of the character. His final diatribe might be repellent, but the characterisation is so specific that he never feels like a caricature.
The same cannot be said for Mark Bonnar as the unhinged physics teacher, determined to root out the thief in the carriage, immediately focusing on the "undesirables" among them. He's a very broadly sketched public avenger, who is simultaneously looks down on those who don't conform and views them as a potential threat. He is a terrifying creation, taking it upon himself to mete out justice, and over-awing the other passengers to the point where they can't stand up to him. Well, aside from Susan Wokoma's self-righteous character, who for the most part is the only one with the backbone to speak up, and the moral conscience of the episode. Wokoma is instantly likeable, and her final exchange with Pemberton is genuinely crushing.
It’s not a perfect episode – there are a couple of moments where it veers into 12 Angry Men territory, with some lines of dialogue feeling a little forced and overly dramatic. As is the case with other episodes that take a bit of explaining, the ending is a little rushed, with the resolution raising more questions than it answers. But everything has to be heightened in a show like this when you are working within a 30 minute story.
As ever there are moments that pay off on repeat viewings. Without spoiling too much, Shearsmith’s docile, passive character, and Finneran’s frustration with him is the aspect that stands out the most in hindsight, along with the use of familiar announcements from the train driver, rendered incredibly sinister on a rewatch. Kelly’s unhinged recitation of I’ve Got A Little List from The Mikado is also incredibly ominous, and in retrospect entirely appropriate. The sense of paranoia is helped immeasurably through the synthy score from Christian Henson and the set design, which is full of subtle little touches, such as the perfectly judged Tube posters with authentic sounding catchphrases like “Don’t mind us, we’re just watching” - the wording is just right, superficially innocuous but casually authoritarian
What I loved about this episode is the way it refuses to take a side until very near the end. Of course we empathize with Charlie Cooper‘s diffident homeless man, who is all-too aware of how society views him, but when Bonnar shouts down Wokoma’s character with “This lady is a NURSE! It wasn’t so long ago we were applauding her!” it’s difficult to not see his point about the perceived decline in moral values. Similarly, the dim view taken by the episode of those who meekly let things happen to them is refreshing, and brought to mind a very specific lyric from Into The Woods: “You’re not good, you’re not bad, you’re just nice.” The ending leaves you in little doubt about which side you should be on, but also implies that it’s too late now. That the time to do the right thing has long since passed.
The perfect way to kick off this final run of episodes, Boo To A Goose is an alternately playful and chilling commentary on authoritarianism with a sinister sting in the tail. It has everything you could want from an episode of Inside No.9; Beautifully observed performances, witty wordplay, a chilling twist, even an apparent nod to The League Of Gentlemen (“She had her breast pinched”). Let’s hope the rest of this season is up to this standard!

2024.05.10 19:04 ZeroBadIdeas I have loved Psych for years, how did I only just learn about the podcast?!

It's delightful! Timothy Omundson(sp?) and Maggie Lawson? Forget about it, sign me up :)
I'm not even a huge podcast guy, but I do have downtime while doing Lyft or Uber, so I throw it on the Bluetooth and I am loving it. And the series just popped up on Netflix - so auspicious.
The funny thing is, I was looking for Fake Doctors, Real Friends (the Scrubs podcast, which it turns out is also so excellent), and somehow came across this one as well. It's gonna take forever to rewatch Psych now, because I'll have to listen to the podcast for an episode, then watch it, and I might watch it prior to listening so I can follow along with their conversation. And if I'm driving and listening, I'll have to go back and catch up on watching. Worth it, I think. What a show.
And to think, James was about to leave the west coast and go back to New York to get back into theatre just as his agent gently nudged him towards the Psych script in the nick of time.
