Memorialising old saves
Note: I'm crossposting this from my Tumblr blog. I've edited it a little to redact some personal information that I'm not sure about posting on Reddit.
This is an image-heavy post! It's also super long, sorry.

I've been going through some nintendogs and nintendogs+cats games - some are mine from years ago, some are recently-acquired. But all of them come with some little pieces of history that I don't want to see disappear forever when I return people's dogs/change owner names etc, so I thought I'd memorialise them here. Eventually I'm going to return all the other people's dogs, change the owner names, etc, but without resetting the game entirely... So I wanted to make sure they're remembered. Even if it's just by me and a handful of people on here.
First: from 2016-2017, this is my oldest nintendogs game. My actual oldest one was acquired in about... 2007, maybe? Maybe later than that, I was pretty late getting it compared to other people. But that cartridge is lost to time. That, or maybe it's the same one after a reset and I just don't recognise anyone in the friends list due to memory issues... But I'm really not sure.
https://preview.redd.it/uvqg5ilm1o0d1.jpg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc3c77924f23af9b39afcda639ee01c08d17873d

I must have been playing it sometime in 2017; the owner name and the name of the corgi match my name at the time (hence why it's scribbled out, I don't go by it anymore) and the GSD is named after a friend I had at the time. The rest, aside from Lucky who I think might have been one of the old owner's dogs, are all named after Star Trek characters. 2017 was my Star Trek phase so it makes sense.

Oh right, this. The friends list tells me that whoever had it before was playing in 2011-2012, which really makes me curious... I'm not sure if I bought this game from someone else, or if my friend gave it to me and those were their old friends or something. I don't recognise the usernames at all, I can't think of anyone we knew in 2011-2012 that matches those... So who knows. The answers are lost to time, but I'm glad I can sort of. Memorialise them all here.

Next up: I think this is nintendogs+cats... Golden retriever edition? I can't recall right now. I only got it a few days ago, and it looks like the owner was playing in 2011. They seem to have spent the most time with lexy, the others didn't have many tricks unlocked. It's interesting that there's no info about the owner - I wonder if that's because it's the +cats version, so it's tied to a mii, which I of course don't have? But it still has the old mii's appearance... Maybe they really just didn't ever put a message or present up, who knows. I guess I can test that when more of my +cats versions arrive, or if anyone else has insight, feel free to share it.
I really like lexy, I wish I could keep her... Unfortunately in all but one of these games (not including the first one, our own), the dogs all have lowercase names or names with symbols in them, and I just can't stomach that sadly. They have to have proper case names or it feels 'wrong' to me. I haven't returned these dogs yet, but I think I'll spend some extra time with lexy when I do. This person also only had these three dogs, there was no one in the dog hotel.

Here's Dalmatian and friends. This one is my personal favourite (this specific game, not dalmatian+friends in general)! This person clearly put a lot of time and love into the game; james was almost at the top position for flying disc competitions and had high ranks in all the others too! I also just love jane 66's profile, it has so much personality. I think reading this one is when I knew I wanted to take pictures of them all rather than let them be completely lost to time.
I also love that they had two identical beagles! I would never think to adopt two of the same dog but it's sweet that they liked them enough to have two. I can't be sure, but I feel like rex might have been their first dog since he's a dalmatian and the others sort of overtook him later - or maybe he was bought last, for the sake of having the 'title dog', and left in the hotel... Who knows! I really like this one. I kind of don't want to return the dogs at all, but like I said: the symbols in the names grate on me too much to keep them, sadly.

Finally, dachshund and friends. This one is interesting; it looks like the last owner might only have been playing the game for a day or so. They taught rowan the first three tricks (you can only teach three a day), didn't enter any competitions, and only have 26 points as you can see. I kind of wonder what happened - did they have the game for a long time and do a reset just before they gave it away? Who knows.
Their username and message are so charming to me, there's so much personality there. It's also really interesting to me that they didn't pick a profile picture, and that they called themselves 'root' in their message but didn't use that for their owner name! Kind of like saying 'I'm samuel, but you can call me sammy', haha. It's nice.

That's all the ones I have for now. I have a couple more that should be delivered in a few days. I also have (or, well, don't have) two other games that are lost to me: nintendogs+cats toy poodle edition, and nintendogs+cats golden retriever edition. I'd like to talk about those too, though I don't have pictures of any of them.
Golden retriever was my first +cats game, I bought it in 2017 which must have been when I first got a 3ds. I had a great dane puppy called schultz, and a little black and white kitten whose name I don't remember. I'm sure I had others, but I don't remember them either. I know screenshots of them did exist somewhere, but I think the old blog and discords I posted them to are long gone unfortunately. I last played it in 2022, which is when I also ordered +cats: toy poodle and +cats: french bulldog (I still have french bulldog).
I was going through some really heavy irl stuff at the time and using nintendogs to cope I guess! In french bulldog, I have a french bulldog called Egghead and an unnamed pit bull terrier - I must have bought that dog and then stopped playing within seconds lol. I don't remember any of my toy poodle version dogs/cats. I'm not sure what happened to the other cartridges; I know I was playing them all at a friend's house a lot, so whether I left them there or I accidentally threw them out while cleaning, or they're still hidden away somewhere, who knows. It's unlikely I'll find them again though. I think my friend is likely to have thrown them out thinking they were someone else's, and if they were here I'm sure I'd have found them while I was packing all of my stuff for a move recently.

Oh, right. Finally: a little shoutout to the very, very first nintendogs I ever had in like 2007 or whatever. It was nintendogs: chihuahua and friends, and I adopted a little black chihuahua called chichi (after the petz game) and a brown and white spaniel called faith (I think after my friend's oc, or a tv show character we liked). I know I had other dogs but I don't remember them at all. I probably had trouble bonding with them, like I often do if I have more than two pets.
If you read all of this, thanks and congratulations! If you have stories of your own to share, like old dogs and owners from secondhand cartridges you've gotten, I'd love to hear them.

2024.05.15 06:05 nopehujkinmkh New dog. In love. Stubborn as heck.

New dog. In love. Stubborn as heck.
Hello, I have just adopted a wonderful dog. She had a very rough start. They found her covered in fleas ticks and dirt in the middle of Texas and she was heavily pregnant. She was brought to Connecticut and had five puppies. Only four of them survived. The four survivors were adopted out. She was then spayed and put up on Petfinder where I found her and brought her home. She may have some hormones that are still regulating but She is a literal dream. She is the cutest little thing. 17 lb Boston terrier Chihuahua mix. I've only had her a week but she is already so attached to me and she's been wonderful and she's slowly been socializing with other people and dogs. She is just a goofy clown that brings so much joy to my life. I understand that both of those breeds can be stubborn, but I feel like she's doing a full-on protest. Every morning I wake up and I drive her to the dog park because it's fenced in and I let her get her energy out in the morning and then I take her again at lunch time with a little picnic for myself and then I take her again at night. The problem is when I don't have time to drive her or when it's too late or when you know life just gets in the way like my car broke down like it did today. I have to take her out for a full hour, hour and a half. Sometimes two and a half hours and she will either do a poop or a pee but not both. And then we come inside either overnight or right away. She will do the one in the house. Now when we go to the dog park she does both and comes home and doesn't have an accident. I'm wondering if this is just her adjustment time which is fine. I I don't discipline too much with the accidents because I go more with positive reinforcement where I give her a lot of praise and treats when she does go outside. I try not to raise my voice today but days like today when it just is piled on....it's hard to be patient.I want to be clear. Nothing in this world is going to make me get rid of her. If I have to freaking pad train her I will. I don't want to. I think she might be cold outside. She is a short-haired dog and the night time is sometimes cold. I got her a longer leash that she can run around more. I play fetch with her. I take her on longer walks. Today we were outside from 9:00 at night to 11:30 and the moment she came in she came in and immediately peed on the bed. The only other issue we've had is she occasionally resource guards me. But she's usually quick to drop that when I correct her. I feel terrible because I had to put her in the kennel while I remade the bed and cleaned up the pee and she's looking at me like I broke.jer heart. .
I was really nervous about getting a dog. I waited 15 years to get a dog. for contexts I had a wonderful little dog. He was 27 lb. He was the mix of all mixes. His mom was a Chihuahua pug and his dad was a cocker spaniel poodle. He was a very odd looking boy but very cute and he was very well behaved. Now my mom's friend had puppies and my mom wanted one and my dad told her we're only going to have one dog. I love my mom. My mom is not a great person. She basically made me get rid of panda because he was an "ugly dog" and she wanted a puppy. She never got one. By the way, my dad really liked Panda and when we got rid of him he was kind of pissed and told her that they weren't getting another puppy ever . I would have said no but I was only 19 at the time and I didn't have money to move out of my own. I was still in college. Panda went to my boyfriend at the time's mom who was retired so she was home all the time with him and they had a wonderful relationship. But unfortunately, his mom lived alone and fell down some stairs and died. He then went to My ex-boyfriend who will let me visit him and pet him and see him all the time until my ex-boyfriend and I got in a fight when his roommate wanted to get a couple of Cane Corso puppies and I told him that wasn't a great idea for a 8-year-old 27 lb dog who's only lived alone. Then things got weird Tommy gotten sick and I offered to take care of Panda and he yelled at me and told me I was never going to get Panda back because he gave Panda to his new girlfriend's parents. But would not provide any pictures or updates or anything? And I understand that I was forced to give Panda away but it's not something I wanted. Unfortunately. Tom was a heavy drinker And had a lot of trauma In a short amount of time his mom died then his dad died that his best friend died. He ended up drinking himself to death. I tried to find out where Panda went but everyone was really secretive about it. i think something bad might have happened with Panda and the Cane Corsos because Tom was the type of person to not want to admit someone's right when he's wrong and I feel like the only reason he wouldn't have told me about what happened to Panda is because then it would prove that I was right even though I don't really care that I'm right.
I promised myself that I would wait until I felt like I was in a place where there was no way I could lose my dog or anyone could make me lose my dog. I gave Panda away 15 years ago. I'm in my thirties now and I am a very confident with dogs. All my friends have me watch their dogs. I know a lot about training but I've never adopted a dog and I understand the 333 rule but I just want to make sure I'm doing an okay job even though she seems to be in protest. Am I taking her to the dog park too often even though it makes her happy? She really is the best thing. She is such a love. Also, thank you for your advice.

2024.05.14 16:52 Ancient-Stop-6190 My Girl was Attacked (Again)(She’s Okay)

My Girl was Attacked (Again)(She’s Okay)
I’ve had dogs all my life but have never had any incidents until I got a pitbull. My baby (named Baby) has a target on her back! This is the second time in my complex where she has gotten bit. First time was by a poodle/ terrier mix, this time it was a Rottweilelab.
I have a pitty / husky / shepherd mix who was with me as well this morning; but for some reason she’s never targeted; only Baby is. My mom believes it’s because her muscles and HBIC energy looks the most threatening to other dogs.
I was taking her and my other dog Bella out to go potty this morning, across the street from my building (Bella has a preferred potty spot).
I noticed that my downstairs neighbors patio door was open with her young toddler standing in the doorway watching us. My heart sunk as I realized that 1. His mom probably didn’t realize the door was open 2. Their RottweileLab mix probably was about to realize it was open
My dogs had never interacted with this dog previously; but they are territorial and he was as well (had barked through the door at them.)
Seconds later he charged out and immediately went for Baby’s neck, grabbing her. Thankfully she held her own; immediately fought back, and he wasn’t able to get his teeth sunk into her. Her sister Bella jumped in as well trying to get him off of her. I know that when a dog fight is going on you’re supposed to essentially choke the aggressor; but with 3 dogs going at it I couldn’t get my arm around his neck especially with Baby now going after him. All rationale went out the window and I started screaming HELP HELP HELP at the top of my lungs until the neighbor came running out and grabbed her dog and held him by the neck as he tried to still charge Baby and Bella.
I took my girls inside; thankfully; not a single puncture wound or scratch on them. I was proud because they held her own, but also did not injure the other dog. Based on lack of injury, I would like to think the other dog wasn’t necessarily looking to hurt Baby, but rather assert his dominance and defend his territory.
Regardless, the entire incident was incredibly scary and could’ve been significantly worse. However, the owner was gracious and came to apologize, see if my dogs were hurt and offer to pay for vet care if they were. In turn, I was gracious and told her that I have a toddler as well who was notorious for opening doors and that at the end of the day, dogs are dogs and it wasn’t her fault.
All this to say, I never realized how scary it is to own a dog that other people and animals perceive as being dangerous. Baby is the sweetest girl; but other people and animals don’t seem to perceive her that way

2024.05.13 20:45 ILackACleverPun Time per dog

Time per dog
I recently graduated academy and am feeling pretty confident with my time. I've been clipping dogs for a year now and hand stripping for a year and a half. It takes me around 1 hour 45 minutes per dog. I only take small dogs or the occasional medium sized dog due to space constraints in our salon. So that's about 3 dogs a day, a half an hour for lunch, and half an hour to clean up at the end of the day. The grooms include washing and drying.
But I recently was talking with a friend and she mentioned that was a very small amount to do in a day. I'm sure I'll get faster but is an hour or even less normal? Some dogs I can do quickly, I had two border terriers for hand stripping today and did both in only a bit more than 2 hours. But others can take me almost 3 hours, like a poodle in a lamb cut with scissored legs.
Photo my most favorite recent groom for the algorithm. (He took me 1.75hrs)

2024.05.13 16:23 Necessary-Arachnid-4 Match me a breed

I am really interested in sighthounds if any match these requirements.
Size and Weight Preference: Between 15lbs and 80lbs at full size
Coat Preference: I would really like a wash and wear kind of coat, but I am okay with grooming if I have the right mentor. What matters to me most is that they either don’t shed or don’t shed much. A don’t mind a little hair but I don’t want everything I own to be coated in it. I am not allergic to pets at all so it’s a cleaning issue. If I can keep the shedding down with brushing then I am all good.
Temperament: Affectionate; Active, but okay with being a couch potato for most of the day.
Climate where I live: I would say it gets hot in the summer and below freezing, but not by much (in the teens) in the winter. Hardly ever snows.
Energy Level: I want a dog that can be active, but isn’t going to absolutely lose their mind if I don’t take them out and exercise them for 2 hours a day. I want to say high energy is okay, but I’m not quite sure if my standard poodle and doodle are just exceptions to the rule. They’re suppose to be high energy breeds and I can keep them happy with playing ball for an hour or so a day from the couch. I want to do sports like dock diving, fast cat and maybe fetch and disc, but I can’t say that it will be every single day.
Drive level: I want a dog that has a decent amount of drive for ball and prey, but not so much that they can’t be around kids. We have kids who are 9 and 7 and plan to have more in the next 2-3 years.
What do you plan to do with your dog?: He or she will first and foremost be a pet. I want a dog to do conformation with.
Velcro or independent: I prefer a dog that is somewhere in between, but I really want a dog that is okay with sitting with me on the couch while I work and is affectionate and cuddly. They cannot be a one owner dog because I do have kids and a fiancée.
Intelligence level and ease of training: Moderate to High intelligence. I don’t mind if they are a little stubborn.
Social Level With People: It doesn’t matter as long as they are not prone to aggression or reactivity
What will their home/daily life be like?: I work from home so the dogs are my constant companions. They’re very rarely left alone and when they are they are crated. They don’t spend a ton of time outside unsupervised. We do have a fenced in backyard. We are already in the process of upgrading to a 6 foot privacy fence. We own our house and we live in a neighborhood. We stay in a lot of the time. We are very introverted people, so we don’t have guests come over often and we don’t go places very often either. We like to play indoors with the dogs and in the backyard when it is nice out. We have also started taking our current dogs to Fun Runs and Dock Diving practice. We plan to get all of the dogs CGC trained so we can try out barn hunt and agility as well, so we do plan to do things like that.
Tolerance for: Dog aggression (DA), Same-Sex aggression (SSA), Human aggression (HA) (Some breeds are more prone to these traits than others. : No tolerance for any of this
Your experience with breeds, likes/dislikes with breeds you know, deal-breakers
I am absolutely obsessed with my poodle. She is my everything. If I thought that I could learn to upkeep that show coat I would 100% get another poodle, but I don’t think I could do it. The one thing I don’t like about her that I would change is that she isn’t very affectionate. She is more like a cat that comes up to get some attention when she wants it, but for the most part she is okay with just being nearby. My Airedale has been an absolute nightmare and as my first terrier I was very unprepared. We have been working with her and things are getting better but for a while she was play biting the kids and digging holes in the yard and eating anything and everything and chewing up carpet. Woo. She was a handful. I don’t necessarily want to go through that again.
I am very interested in sighthounds as a whole, but I don’t have enough experience with them (as I don’t know anyone who has any) to know if they are likely to be affectionate.

2024.05.13 11:02 SmackinGoobers "Bans work with dangerous dog breeds" - Swedish opinion/news article about banning pitbulls

https://www.svd.se/a/Jbo6Mm/forbud-mot-farliga-hundar-fungerar-skriver-sirkku-sarenbo
Article by Sirkku Sarenbo, Senior Lecturer in environmental science, Linnaeus University
Nordic countries that have bans on certain dog breeds have far fewer deaths than those that do not. Whose interest should weigh the most in society? That is the question asked by Sirkku Sarenbo, docent in environmental science.
In recent years, severe dog attacks on children, adults, dogs and horses have initiated discussion about different solutions to this social problem. According to interest organizations and private actors with a vested interest in dogs of the fighting dog type, breed bans are completely ineffective and no solution. They refer to, among other things, Danish studies where the researchers could not show that the breed ban had the desired effect on the number or extent of bite injuries on dogs and humans.
Already after two years, however, the number of bite injury treatments at Copenhagen's animal hospital had decreased, and at the end of June 2015, injury statistics from Odense Hospital showed that the number of dog-related injuries to humans had dropped by 15 percent.
The biggest difference is in the number of dog-related deaths. Nordic countries that have racial prohibitions have far fewer deaths than those that do not. The dogs that figure in fatal attacks on humans and other dogs are often distinctive working dogs selected for special tasks, and are rarely suitable for companionship alone. Although modern breeding is said to have reduced the dogs' desire and ability to perform their duties such as fighting, guarding or herding, case law testifies otherwise.
Legislative measures introduced so far, which were aimed at counteracting the problem with fighting dogs, have not had the desired effect, but have had the opposite effect. Dogs of fighting dog breeds have taken their place among the ten most common breeds in at least 54 municipalities, and dogs with a history of bites are mediated both under state auspices and via private interest organizations. New varieties have been developed and the statistics on the Swedish Agricultural Agency's dog register show that a remarkably large proportion of the dogs registered as fighting dog breeds had to change homes at least once after the new registration. This can also be seen in the animals that are relocated via the dog shelters, and in advertisements on Blocket.
The Swedish Kennel Club believes that a ban on American Staffordshire terriers (amstaff) would not work because the dogs are often mixed breeds. But a ban would surely strangle the basis for mixed breed breeding - because without so-called purebred dogs, we can't produce so-called mixed breeds either?
About 70 district court judgments from 2023 to the time of writing this year deal with prosecutions for causing bodily harm where one or more dogs caused the harm. In these cases, a diverse group of dog owners appear; some with criminal connections and/or substance abuse problems, but also completely ordinary people who invested time and resources to give a dog "a second chance", but who were surprised in a situation where the dog suddenly took its own initiative, attacked and seriously injured a outsider or his dog.
Should the businesses that rehome or import dogs for rehoming be exempted from liability when the rehomed dog bites? When dogs with bite histories are repeatedly rehomed to families with children? And who is actually the "responsible" and experienced owner who is so often asked for? Every dog owner needs a knowledgeable circle around him who can help with the dog - and every "responsible" owner can still make a mistake. Should we have dogs that attack and bite others as soon as they happen to get loose?
The dog organizations have been clear that the amstaff and american bully are worth preserving, but who is standing up for all the others whose dogs have been injured and bitten to death by them? How many poodles, dachshunds and labradors is an amstaff and an american bully worth? How does it feel to sit with your companion dog's body in your arms when the American bully has torn its head off? And the authorities think this was just an accident?
There are tools for assessing a dog's dangerousness and the prognosis of new attacks. Rehabilitation of a dog that has caused a severe bite injury is basically hopeless, and the probability that it will bite again is high.
More difficult to measure is the fear and feeling of insecurity that keeping dangerous dogs causes to those around them. Whose interest should weigh more heavily? The individual's interest in owning a dangerous dog - or that of those around them who have to adapt their lives to the dangerous dog in fear of being attacked?

2024.05.11 16:51 Appropriate-Class644 adopting or buying from a reputable breeder/ rescue in nyc/ nj/ ct?

hi all, my partner (27m) and i (23f) are looking to adopt or possibly buy a small young/adult (no puppies!!) low shedding dog from a reputable breeder / rescue this summer. i’m having trouble deciding which route to take as i was very firm on adopt don’t shop when we initially started talking about getting a dog, but i do have mild allergies to dogs and many shelters/ rescues unfortunately cannot guarantee a dog being hypoallergenic or low shedding. my partner has never had a dog before and i grew up with dogs so we decided to foster first. upon deciding we will foster first, i did a very long deep dive on shelters and rescues in nyc and realized not all of them do the great work we think they do. we also wanted to foster first because im sure rescue get lots of applications for the small young/ adult dogs.
we’ve currently been fostering with a rescue based in brooklyn. it hasn’t been the best experience with them (no fault of the dog we’re fostering at all!!) which has been disappointing as i was hoping to adopt through them since they had so many small adult dogs coming in each transport but now im not sure if id like to go that route. my fear is medical information being withheld from me / a proper vet check not being completed by the rescue when i do adopt. i also don’t know if ethical breeding does exist anywhere in the nyc/nj/ ct area?
i’m interested in mini schnauzers, mini poodles, malteses, havanese, cairn terrier, really any small low shedding dog.
sorry for the long post!! just looking to get a small dog and i want to do it in a way that’s right for both our future dog and for my partner and i

2024.05.10 04:33 Impossible-Path8920 Anticipatory Grief is Killing Me - Unsure What to Do

Species: Canine Age: 12-14 yrs (estimated)
Sex/Neuter status: FS
Breed: Chihuahua/Poodle/Terrier Mix
Body weight: 10lbs / 4.54kg Duration: 8 days
General location: PNW, USA
Diagnosis: Fibrosarcoma, high grade
Quick Description: I am in agony over a decision on whether or not to let my sweet girl go with dignity this weekend or whether to pursue treatment for more time. Ultimately, I want to make the best decision for her well-being and comfort over my feelings, but I’m struggling with the thought of letting her go. Cost is not an issue.
More Info:
My sweet, perfect girl stopped eating last week and I immediately took her to the vet, where they discovered a massive splenic tumor and liver nodules. It was almost overnight - she was showing clear signs of great discomfort and struggled to do basic things for a few days until we could get results from the tumor samples.
I opted for surgery to save my dog at a very reputable clinic to remove my dog's presumed (based on tests and images) benign splenic mass and liver nodules. Despite initial optimism, the operation revealed a bomb of malignant high grade fibrosarcoma cancer throughout her abdomen, necessitating the removal of her spleen, half her pancreas, and a tumor intertwined with her internal organs (abdominal wall, stomach, pancreas, liver etc). They got the biggest tumor out, but the excision was incomplete as they had to leave the rest in there.
Faced with her age and fragile state, I am conflicted about pursuing chemotherapy, as recommended by her surgeon and another vet, given the advanced stage of her “slow-growing” fibrosarcoma and its presence in her liver. Three days post-op, she requires constant care (which I’m happy to provide), struggles to drink water but can eat high-value foods. Hospice nurses assure that her current poor quality of life is mostly due to surgical recovery and will improve for awhile.
I grapple with the decision between prolonging her life potentially with chemotherapy after I promised her no more vets or providing comfort in her final days at home, prioritizing her dignity and well-being over the uncertain promise of more time.
She almost died on the table and I feel like I got a second chance to help her pass with dignity instead of her last memory being scared and alone at the vet. I don’t want to give up on her, but I also don’t want to rob her of a peaceful passing.
When in the time to let go? Is it best to go out on the high note of a good day or wait until she’s visibly suffering again? For anyone who perused treatment with cancer in their dogs before - what was your experience?
Also, apologies if I sound cold - I am emotionally stripped after lots of tears, fear, and many nights with little sleep this week. I can’t imagine my life without her and it’s ripping me up. I have a lot of emotional support around me, but no one will give me a straight answer and I’m drowning.

2024.05.09 22:53 Impossible-Path8920 Fibrosarcoma in Senior Dog - worth oncology consult?

Species: Canine Age: 12-14 yrs (estimated)
Sex/Neuter status: FS
Breed: Chihuahua/Poodle/Terrier Mix
Body weight: 10lbs / 4.54kg Duration: 8 days
General location: PNW, USA
Diagnosis: Fibrosarcoma, high grade
Quick Description: I am in agony over a decision on whether or not to let my sweet girl go with dignity or whether to pursue treatment for more time. Ultimately, I want to make the best decision for her well-being and comfort over my feelings. Cost is not an issue.
Long Description: My pup had a large splenic mass and on x-rays and ultrasound appeared to also have some liver nodules. Based on the FSA and other factors two different vets felt optimistic that these could be benign and surgery could be curative. I ended up canceling her euthanasia appointment and instead get surgery done to save her life at a highly reputable facility with a blood bank and an experienced surgeon. Unfortunately, when they opened her up, they found a bomb inside of her. She nearly died on the table, and the surgeon was able to remove her spleen, half her pancreas, detach the tumor where it was wrapping from her stomach, abdomen and intestines.
I nearly lost my girl and left her with a last memory of me walking away from her in a place she felt scared and alone. Thats gutting. I feel like I have a second chance to let her heal with some dignity and pass in her own home feeling loved. I’m experiencing a lot of pressure from her surgeon and another vet to consider chemotherapy as apparently my city has a lot of great veterinary oncologists.
I don’t want to lose time with her and I’m already full of grief and regret. Had I known what was inside of her? I would’ve never put her through the surgery. However, I’m afraid of continuing to put her through more for an outcome that is ultimately pretty bleak and I’m also afraid of not giving her an opportunity for more time when her surgeon tells me this is a slow growing cancer. I’m torn.
She’s 3 days post op and exhausted and needs 24/7 care (which I’m happy to provide). She struggles to drink water (drinks copious amounts very awkwardly and takes a lot of time to quench thirst) but she will eat high value food like chicken. Hospice nurses tell me this is normal post op and the poor quality of life at the moment will improve.
Although the spleen was removed there is still cancer metastasized elsewhere including her liver. With a “slow growing” fibrosarcoma that is this advanced, how quickly might this tank her again? If I say goodbye to her sooner am I robbing her of significant months of quality life? Again cost is not an an issue, I just want to do right by her.
History: Progressive loss of appetite over past week and PU/PD. CBC/Chem unremarkable. AUS - Splenic mass, liver nodules. Surgical explore - gross omental metastasis. Palpable vascular invasion along splenic vein. Sub-total omentectomy. Attempted to remove entire palpable tumor in splenic vein.
Gross Description: Spleen - Received is the entire spleen which measures approximately 13 cm in length. Arising towards one pole is a 7 x 6 x 4 cm firm mass. On cut section, the mass is cream-tan and fibrous in appearance. Representative sections are taken.
Microscopic Description: Spleen - The mass is composed of a densely cellular, unencapsulated, and poorly demarcated population of neoplastic spindle cells. The cells are arranged in large interweaving streams and bundles. They have indistinct cell borders and large amounts of eosinophilic cytoplasm. Nuclei are oval to elongate with finely stippled chromatin and some cells have a small pinpoint basophilic nucleolus. Anisocytosis and anisokaryosis are moderate. Mitotic activity is moderate to high (15 mitoses per 10 HPF). In one area the cells spread through the capsule of the spleen and into the attached omentum, consistent with the appearance described at surgery.

The Elephant, Clydesdale, and Ribbon Yorkie all had tags, but only the Yorkie worked. I named her Kevin :) I found a Husky too, but I already have one, so I left them their for the next Webkinz enthusiast.

2024.05.08 06:05 thisismybackupyall What to choose!?

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
As an adult, I “inherited” my MIL’s rescue when MIL passed away. He was a maltipoo?mix & had several health issues. He took meds twice a day & had to wear a diaper when we were out because he took diuretics. Not much experience training a dog.
2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?
I don’t have a preference other than I would like a smaller dog that sheds very little.
3) Describe your ideal dog. A small, low shedding, playful, gentle dog. I would prefer if it didn’t bark too too much
4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
Toy poodle (had one as a teen & he was very intelligent & sweet, little to no shedding), Shih tzu (had one as a young child & I remember her being a perfect princess. She was my first dog & amazing with children), Cavapoo (this is more of low shedding, they’re cute & I have read that they’re good with kids), Miniature Goldendoodle (good with kids, hopefully 😬 best of two popular breeds?), random lil wire-haired terrier mutt from the pound (honestly, this is because they’re cute)
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
They don’t need to do tricks or anything. I’d like them to be house trained & maybe learn “sit”
6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
Nahh. They’d just be a family pet.
Care Commitments
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
Many hours. I work from home. I have twin 5 year old girls.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
An hour or two. A dog park (if it’s okay with my dog & they’re not too young), walking on the sidewalks in our neighborhood. I could not handle a dog that needed a bunch of exercise daily.
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
I would comb and/or brush them daily, if necessary. I would clean ears, clip nails, etc. I might have to leave the hair trimming to the experts. I would pay a professional every 4-6 weeks to do a full head-to-toe groom.
Personal Preferences
10) What size dog are you looking for?
A smaller dog, preferably under 20lbs.
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
Very little shedding, barking when there’s a noise or someone new but not incessantly. Please, not much slobber
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
This is not very important at all. I have a fenced-in yard.
Dog Personality and Behavior
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
I don’t want a dog up my butt every second of the day, but I do want to snuggle
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
1 being its own thing & 10 being eager to please: I’m at a 6.5
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
I would prefer a friendly pup.
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
It depends on the level of aggression. I would prefer not to deal with it.
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
I would like to avoid aggression toward my children. I don’t mean children that will pull its tail or intimidate or harm it in some way. Just kids that want to play with it.
Lifestyle
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
I work from home. Besides a visit to the grocery store or possibly enough time to catch a movie, he/she would not be alone.
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
My children want a “puppy that will stay a puppy.” They want a small dog.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
No other pets as of now. We were thinking of getting a kitten around the same time
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
Yes
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
We rent but will likely have bought a house by the time our pup would be with us. I believe there is a breed restriction (no pit bulls or German shepherds, for sure) and I think 50lbs+ weight restriction.
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
Texas does not restrict dog breeds
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
Up to 98 degrees F (average) in August & average low of 36 degrees F in January. That August temp seems mighty low though
Additional Information and Questions
25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.
I know I said I have 5 year old twin girls. They listen pretty well and THEY LOVE DOGS. They have been around my SIL’s mini aussiedoodle & they are very gentle with her. They’ve earned her trust & she is very skeptical
26) Feel free to ask any questions below.
Best small dog breed for families, in your opinionl

2024.05.06 15:10 Extension_Art3158 My dogs will not stop itching (fleas+allergies)

I have 2 dogs. A bichon poodle (5yo) and a yorkie terrier (9yo). 3 years ago I moved to Los Angeles to an area with a lot of stray cats making the area flea infested. Since then, it has been a constant battle fighting the fleas as every single time i walk my dogs to go potty at least 2 fleas jump on each of them every time. My resolution for this has been flea checks after every walk and dawn dish soap baths 1 to 2 times a week. Which i know is not good for my dogs skin however it is the only non medicated thing ive found to work. I cannot afford a vet visit and veterinary medicine for both dogs, and i am afraid to try over the counter flea meds because of the side effects ive read about and it’s high prices.
My yorkie has always had pretty intense skin and itching issues his itching is extreme due to what I think are allergies however we were never able to confirm this with a vet. But with the combination of regular dawn baths and the fleas, his itching is extreme. He now constantly scratches, chews until he bleeds, rips out his hair, and is covered in hot spots/rashes. My bichon is also having these itching problems but i not as extreme as i think it is a reaction only from the fleas
Because it is multiple things causing the itching for one of my dogs, can someone please provide me a game plan on what i can do to remedy the fleas and allergies. Or is this really something that needs a vet visit.

2024.05.05 07:06 Bright-Willow Can this wait until Monday?

Images
11month F spayed terriechi/poodle mix. 16lbs.
Yesterday she had acute onset of symptoms with a squinty eye and some discharge. It seemed to be better a couple hours later but this morning it was much worse. The liquid / pus coming out of her eye is profuse. All the fur around it feels like it’s covered in dry glue.
I got in the virtual line for the emergency vet at 9am. At 4pm they told me they had too many critical cases and weren’t taking new patients anymore. I drove 30 minutes to the only other 24hr vet in my state. I’ve been here nearly 7 hours. I’ve watched a dozen cases deemed more critical than hers get treatment before me.
I’m 14 hours into trying to get her into a vet. What I read online says it’s an emergency. This experience is telling me it’s not. Can I wait until Monday?
Sorry if I’m grump. I’m tired and frustrated. I understand her life is not immediately on the line, but I’m concerned about the viability of her eye. Should I wait it out?

2024.05.03 21:58 Ryryroo Help for potential bladder stones?

Species- dog
Age- 4
Sex- male (neutered)
Breed- rat terrier, mini poodle
Body weight- less than 20 lbs
History- no health history other than routine shots and neuter
Clinical signs-blood coming from urethra, no peeing, lethargic
Duration- 1 day
Location- Utah
My mom took her dog to the vet today due to blood coming from the urethra and no peeing since yesterday. He’s also very lethargic and not wanting to jump or walk around much. They said it is likely bladder stones but quoted her $1,100 for x-ray diagnosis and urine analysis which she unfortunately cannot afford. We know that this is life threatening and would like to do what we can to help him. I am wondering if there is anything we can do to help the stones dissolve naturally? They sent him home with some pain medication and antibiotics. Thanks for any help.

2024.05.03 17:26 Celebithil Male dog holding pee until he physically can't

So, like the title says, my male dog, Max, has been holding his pee until he physically can't anymore. For a little background, he was rescued at 5 months old from a person who kept him crated 16 hours a day. He is now 10 years old and he has always held it for what feels like far too long and will often pee a little but not fully empty his bladder. He has always had accidents in the house occasionally, and ninja pees when he is stressed or anxious (he's an anxious little guy, the vet behaviorist said it's likely due to his experiences as a puppy and can't be cured, just managed).
Lately I noticed him having more accidents inside overnight and not fully emptying his bladder outside. Physical health problems have been ruled out. I decided to get belly bands for him and take them off when he goes outside and treat and praise profusely when he goes on our walks. He peed only once in 24 hours and it was not even close to a full emptying. I was convinced that he wouldn't pee in the belly band, because he's so fastidious. I woke up at 3 am and he had to pee so badly that he physically couldn't wait to get outside and fully released in the belly band. That's fine, that's what it's for and I'm not upset about it, I am just concerned that he seems to be holding it until he physically cannot anymore and then releasing either in a band or somewhere in the house. My best chance of getting him to go outside successfully is if his sister (Millie, 8 year old poodle/chihuahua that he adores) pees first and then sometimes he will pee over where she went, it's not foolproof, but it does help sometimes.
I have had a lot of physical health problems lately, including some mobility issues, so our walks are much shorter now and I stay close to home (walking him and his sister on the sidewalk around my house several times rather than a few blocks), so I think that this has something to do with his stress and anxiety with routine changes and my health (he's a perceptive and sweet little man). However, I don't know what I can do to help him. Does anyone have any advice or ideas on what I can do to help my little guy? He feels so bad when he pees inside even though he doesn't get yelled at or in trouble for it, and I just feel awful that he holds it until his bladder literally fails. That has to be miserable and I know it isn't healthy. I just don't know what to do. I don't know if breed matters, but he is a poodle/rat terrier mix.
TL;DR: My 10 year old poodle/rat terrier mix has been holding his bladder until it physically fails and physical health problems have been ruled out.

2024.05.02 09:32 Appropriate-Egg7764 My First Cairn

Hey Everyone,
I think I’m getting my first cairn terrier this weekend. I went to see her today and she’s just beautiful so I’ve arranged to take her for a day on Saturday to make sure she gets along with my parents cavoodle and if all goes well she is coming home with me.
I’ve had 3 dogs in my life, a shitzu poodle, a labradoodle, and a cavoodle. My grandparents owned a west highland terrier so I am semi familiar with them.
What advice would you give me to raise a happy and healthy pup? Are there any differences in raising Cairns vs oodles?

2024.04.30 19:27 Fantastic_Future_144 I need help training my dog to hopefully maybe one day be a service dog or at the very least an emotional support animal

For context my dog Daisy is a 19 pound rescue "Sheepadoodle🙄" (old English sheep dog, poodle, and litte bit Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier) that fell into my life when pet sitting for a week turned into adopting a dog. I got her from my dad's friend when she was 6 or so months. She's now a year and a half old and unspayed (getting spayed in a couple weeks)
I was hoping Daisy could do tasks to assist me with my shellfish allergy, depression, ADHD, OCD, autism, and anxiety. I've wanted a service dog for the longest time but never knew where to start and right now I can't take on another dog. I've tried to train Daisy with basic obedience which she's good with. But between her background and currently living with other dogs with severe behavioral issues that are out of my control as they're not my dogs I feel like I'm failing. I don't know what to do now. When I first got her I really thought I would be able to train her perfectly on my own and I'm embarrassed to admit that I've failed. She gets anxious and when she doesn't want to go somewhere she turns into jello. But at the same time she's the most loving and enthusiastic dog I've ever met. I still have some hope that some day I will achieve my goal for her but I really don't know where to start and desperately need help training her. I also realize that she very well may not get there and if that's the case I will do the responsible thing not have her be a service dog but I figure it's worth a shot.

2024.04.29 03:39 HoosierDaddyIam Which of these dog breeds would be ideal for a retired older person in their 60s and 70s.

The person isn't very active but is willing to walk the dog up to an hour a day. Likes to stay at home and relax. Ideally the dog breed isn't one with lots of health issues. Ideally the breed isn't prone to aggression, is generally friendly to humans and other animals and doesn't require too much money to take care of. This is all hypothetical for now since I'm only 18 but just wanted to be able to reference this post in the future in case my parents wanted a dog when they're getting older in age and I could be of help and have research to look back at.

2024.04.28 23:28 One_Drummer_5992 17yr old poodle has bad teeth

I have a 17 year old poodle x cairn terrier mix (about 15lbs). She has bad cataracts - not entirely blind but starting to bump into things. She is mostly deaf. Physically she seems healthy for her age - we go up and down a set of stairs every day to go outside, she generally has no problem going up the stairs. She is slower than before and doesn't jump up on the bed or couch anymore. Of course some of that might be due to her blindness. She naps a lot and is happy to meet new people - meeting new people has always been one of her favorite things.
Years ago she had her teeth cleaned and the extracted a couple of teeth but she hasn't had much veterinary care since.
In the last year or two, she started eating her kibble more slowly, taking most of the day to eat it and often leaving it all over the house. I started adding water to her kibble and she gobbles it up now!
I'm sure her teeth are in pretty bad shape (she has never let me look in her mouth, even when she was young). I don't want her to suffer but at the same time it's hard for me to imagine that she has many more years left.
I'm sure she will need some of her teeth extracted. How do you decide if it's worth it for such a senior dog?
