2024.06.06 00:06 Finklemeire Overwatch University Episode 8: Hosted By Aid NineK & Rush Translation

Overwatch University Ep 8:
Aid: Just letting everyone know that unfortunately due to timing and planning issues Coach Moon will have to guest star for next week's episode for his winners interview. Anyway we plan to start with going over each team
Topic 1: Is NRG Shock a Collegiate Team?
Aid: This was my first time ever seeing them and honestly I was quite dissapointed
Rush: You were disappointed?
Aid: Yeah it was my first time seeing any of these guys besides Rakattack so I had my hopes up and was very dissapointed. Like don't NRG need NineK to come back at this point.
NineK: Albert is already doing that. He was Mayhems GM. Someone like me can't be there anymore
Rush: This is a pro team? I thought this was a collegiate team.
NineK and Aid: We aren't that sure either.
Rush: When they first came out weren't they called Students?
NineK: There name was just Students of the Game and they did a little performance of them graduating to NRG.
Rush: So they're basically college team then
NineK: I knew Cal Rakattack and I knew of PGE but I didn't know what he played. He's very popular.
Aid: Explain more
NineK: Like the Super and XQC route of popular streamer? So a lot of people really seem to like him
Aid: Looking at his face he looks like he would just be a kid who studies well
NineK: Yeah he's very popular. He's really funny but he seems fucking crazy.
Aid: I watched them and thought oh geez this is NAs 3rd seed level? Like we knew the top 2 were Toronto and M80 with well known names and then you hear the Shock I thought they would be better so I anticipated a lot better than we got. Like Oh this is enough for 3rd?
Rush: You aren't thinking of this to its logical end. You're like "Oh this guy is in the 3rd seed team?" You should be thinking "How awful is NA for this to be the 3rd seed?" You're not thinking properly
Aid: Wow I must have been too positive a person then.
Rush: I think you were too kind
NineK: To be fair a lot of the good guys are in their collegiate programs
Aid: Oh are those going well?
NineK: Yeah they get scholarships and stuff to play for collegiate so they think it's the future so in a way this OWCS stuff seems to be for the younger guys who just want to try being pros so all the guys with experience probably want to try other things instead of trying super hard.
Aid: Well I guess we have to just think of this team as potential for the future they don't have stage experience after all
NineK: I do hope the collegiate system works out. These kids need to experience the real world to some degree and become functional humans. Pro players kinda you know...
NineK: To be fair these Western teams have more to worry about unlike us cause they have Face it League going on after all. But I can't help what would have happened if DAF was there though (the specific DAF that went game 5 versus FTG)
Topic 2: Twisted Minds Thank you for Showing Up on Stage
Aid: There were probably a lot of people excited to see them after all the hype and OWWC win. They had so many issues though so all I could think watching them was being thankful.
NineK: Thankful?
Aid: Like they had to have come knowing they would get destroyed given all the issues they faced like what do you do in their situation? You have no shot but can't just not appear so I was thankful.
Rush: They didn't even practice right?
NineK: I don't think so.
Rush: They're more invested in Face It League games with their current roster anyway.
NineK: I heard their manager played?
Aid: Okay? I kept thinking why is he only playing Torbjorn? But I was told he was the manager and understood why.
NineK: I heard he was at least Top 500.
Rush: Absolutely not. Just watching him a bit there's no way he was top 500.
NineK: Couldn't that just be the level of EU?
Rush: No even accounting for that there's no way. We'll he is bad so he had to pick Torbjorn right? But even then he was bad. Like if he was top 500 he would have actually dealt damage
Aid: I watched them versus Toronto and it was a mess the team was just off rolling like Someone Echo and Sugarfree Doomfist
NineK: Yeah they fucked around and got punished for it later on right?
Aid: they got punishment is Wow
NineK: Was that too much? Either way they shouldn't have stressed regardless. It was a hopeless situation and worrying about it was only gonna provide more stress
Rush: Now that 2 EU teams are guaranteed they're basically a lock foe the world cup though
NineK: I guess NA has to be worried now after this tournament
Topic 3: M80 Whoever is Retiring was the Problem
Aid: Time for one of the two NA teams
NineK: Meta was a big factor for Asia. A lot of people think Asia is just dive one tricks bit we are good at Brawl and Mauga brawl was good
Rush: But the one thing the West is good at is brawl
NineK: There's only a few of those guys left
Rush: Level of play has gone down NineK: Honestly it feels like they've gotten a lot worse
Aid: I felt like Hawk was the problem watching
NineK: I heard a lot about their problems during the event
Aid: How it seemed to me is Hawk can't play Winston right. So teams with off tanks just default lose on a bunch of the dive maps right. But Mauga didn't work for him Sigma didn't work for him and Dva didn't work either
NineK: Did you see Gators tweet? Basically paraphrased talking about how frustrating it is that you're forced to play players who want to retire/leave. I heard things weren't too smooth so people wanted to leave or retire from the team and because the points are attached to players the players couldn't leave and made it hard to practice. They were just forced to do this. Though it did seem right at the end they tried their best. This system was supposed to protect players but the bad side of it got revealed
Rush: I don't get it. It's a special spot and event it's that players fault then. Like if you have to play only until this event ends do your best and leave cleanly afterwards. Just quitting cause you're leaving like this isn't how the real world works. I think it's the player leavings work ethic at fault. Like if you don't wanna do something and it only harms you that's one thing. But you're just making it worse for everyone around you
Aid: Yeah if you have that hanging over your heads it has to be tough
NineK: Once Again I don't have all the details but they definitely had issues outside the game
Topic 4: Defiant Stage Fright?
Aid: Time for NA seed 1. I was very excited for Vega and was curious to see how well Sugarfree would do given his reputation
NineK: I mean he played last year and was good
Aid: They got destroyed by Crazy Raccoons right? But that was expected and I thought they played okay there. But when they played Ence i felt they played way worse. It made me think that maybe they were just this bad and maybe had a game of a lifetime against CR. Like Ence isn't that good either right? They're just carried by Kai Kevster. What did you think Rush?
Rush: Yeah I did. I always said I thought Toronto wasn't that good. Like I never thought they would compete with top korean teams. They're always just so-so
Aid: But then they lost to Europe
Rush: That did Shock me
NineK: Maybe they were just tired out from getting whooped in winners side.
Aid: CR boomed them?
NineK: From what I know they did okay in scrims. I heard they never used the IEMs and couldn't get used to it or something. Like they were caught off guard with the new system and then got whooped and started second guessing themselves. It seems like Vega either underperformed on stage or gets anxiety.
Rush: Did they not use IEMs in scrims? Didn't the other teams all know this?
NineK: I guess they didn't have friends to tell them?
Rush: But weren't people posting about the earphones? Couldn't they have logically concluded this would happen then?
NineK: Guess Casores messed up then
Aid: At least against CR I felt like they moved properly as a team but against Ence they just kept falling over.
Rush: Maybe the team was just used to punching down for so long.
Aid: I looked at their expressions after the game versus Ence and they were completely just out of it.
NineK: I saw a bunch of them after the game and they were really mentally hurt by it
Rush: Like this was possible for M80 but this roster definitely would get more boomed by the loss. Cause they thought for realy that they were the best
NineK: They even have 3 past winners
Rush: But you have to know the jinx of winning and then flopping a bit your next year
NineK: True. People need to get brought back to Earth after winning. I wanted to tell them you think you're the only super team to fail there are way worse examples out there but I didn't want to sound like a grumpy boomer about it.
Rush: Either way this is basically mid-season
NineK: But isn't it cause they're HERE that they're so boomed like even flopping they expected better than this probably.
Aid: If they did well in scrims no wonder they're sad
NineK: Not performing on stage can't be a consistent issue for them though that'd be bad. That's one of the disadvantage of the West compared to Asia right? Asia has had LANs so far. Honestly I feel if you win online it doesn't count.
Aid: If it was online Genesis would be the best.
Rush: Decay at home is unbeatable
Aid: Decay at home would destroy all of these teams.
Rush: Alright next NA team
Aid: There isn't anymore NA teams
Rush: Already? But there's 3 teams
Aid: You forgot about NRG
NineK: We're 30 minutes in to the podcast and done with NA what a tragedy
Topic 5: Ence, Korea is Better at Overwatch. West have better Livers.
Aid: I fell for Ence after this tournament
Rush: I always liked Ence
NineK: That much?
Aid: Their DPS leave me awestruck but their tanks and supports make me genuinely angry it's so hot and cold I'm getting dizzy
NineK: They're push and pull is really good with your emotions
Aid: Like you watch them and randomly keep feeling "Holy shit that's how you fucking do it!" Then they got you for life. Like watching them on one hand you think no wonder people rate Kai Kevster so well, but on the other hand you think Kai and kevster are this good how on Earth are they losing.
Rush: In EU they're the fun team to watch. Just watching DPS carry is fun afterall
NineK: Ghost was...
Rush: That players still very young you have to give him time. This team if you had Masaa of 2 to 3 years ago they would win way more. His mechanics aren't up to snuff anymore
NineK: I saw him die in the Falcons game and thought to myself " a pro actually thought to play like this?" Like you stand still and you provide value why are you
Aid: This meta was tough for main supports though. The thing that pissed me off is the supports I think never swapped off BapLucio the entire time. They played that comp on Gibraltr like they were on AnaBrig and their team kept dying getting no heals
NineK: It's cause that's what they're good at if they listened to you and tried Brig Ana they would've gone back to Europe early
Aid: The only thing I remember is they lost with that shit comp and Kevsters on cam was just laughing his evil laugh like "Sure who cares that map loss was a given anyways"
NineK: Feels to me like Europe has the most one tricks
Aid: More than US?
NineK: They're all just do things my way players
Rush: Europe is hilarious didn't they ona brodcast (Uncoachable) say Asia never switches characters so Korea had to be below their level while all their guys just play one hero and never swap?
NineK: They're saying that cause they're jealous of the better region.
Aid: Didn't someone say Korea swaps way too often and spread themselves thin
Rush: No this is before that they said Koreans never counter and always just run one comp.
Aid: They're probably happy they did their one thing and beat Toronto
Rush: Yeah the Europeans just wanna beat America
Aid: Yeah they probably came expecting to lose to Korea
Rush: Nah they probably did
NineK: I think they didn't cause I was drinking with some of these guys at like 2AM
Rush: Westerners love that though they'll be drinking the night before a competition and then be fine like they're built different.
NineK: They have better livers.
Aid: They're pre-qualified for EWC now so they got everything they needed.
NineK: There are no main supports
Rush: Korea doesn't have any either
Topic 6: SSG lost because of Christfer-Rush (I know they're rivals now this is banter lol)
Aid: They're the best from Europe but I'm not sure if they really showed the power of Europe or anything. All I felt watching them was Landons power. Also Seicoe was a lot better than I thought he would be. I didn't really rate him when I saw him in the league.
Rush: Landon is so good. Like I've been praising him for so long and everyone just cheers for Hadi
NineK: Hadi is very popular
Rush: He does give a performance to his play
NineK: Astro is still good at his teamplay
Aid: The best thing about Landon is a I saw him get attacked by DPS and his play was like "cmon try to fight me" and he would duel the dps while still healing.
NineK: But he got so beat down on by Raccoons.
Aid: That was different though. That team is usually just Raccoons but against SSG they were acting like actual Crazy Raccoons. Like the anger in their play
NineK: It felt like Landons monitor might as well have been off with how often he was dead like every ten seconds it felt like he died
Aid: (Chat asks about his roster) Landon has a worlds best Bap and an average Kiriko
Rush: He doesn't need it given his teams style.
Aid: Backbone is their Symmetra guy right? But it felt bad cause now you see Cass and Pharah just destroying Symmetra so you knew he wouldn't come out anymore like this was not his meta
NineK: The team feels more threatening with Backbone in but then you would have to replace Seicoe who is really good
Aid: If Backbone could only get a good Tracer the team would be so much better
NineK: Do Korean fans know this? Seicoe is in the army right now. I think there was some situation where if they had gotten to the Finals then he mightve been fucked cause he needed to catch a flight back.
Aid: I had no idea
Rush: Isn't he just becoming a soldier? Like leaving now for it?
NineK: Not sure. I just heard about it with like Avrls group bringing up he was so good while being a soldier
Rush: I've had a soldier in my teams before
NineK: The one dissapointment for me was their map selection. I didn't get it
Aid: Like they didn't pick maps to their strengths properly?
Rush: Then Christfer was the one at fault
NineK: I guess he was. Like I don't get why they chose Havana I don't think they did well on that map in scrims either
Aid: Maybe they literally only picked it for the Rein?
NineK: I felt they weren't used to the map pick system and that threw them for a loop or something. Also I noticed Hadi had a LOT of fans
Aid: I get it though. I'll sometimes watch their games and have a "fuck yeah let's go Hadi" moment too
NineK: But when you watch them it never does feel like it's one guy doing all the work they all work together well
Topic 7: Falcons
Aid: They were losing a bit in the middle swapped strategies and won right? I thought Wow these guys prepared hard and can really do this. Because at the end of the first game it definitely didn't feel like CR had found a solution yet. My first thought when CR lost was that all the staff probably didn't care at all about the SSG game and were just figuring out how to break the Mauga Genji Venture comp. They did play genuinely very well and I could feel how hard they worked this time.
Rush: I feel like CR just wanted to give Falcons some hope. Honestly watching the winners side I thought CR should win easily but they dropped the ball. Also chatters Raccoons absolutely were not hiding strats for the grand finals that's utterly ridiculous. They just got caught off guard and Falcons played well so the game went weird
Aid: Their initial thing was trying to melt Lip and had to swap to melting Junbin when the supports kept hard pocketing Lip. I thought if this went like OWCS Korea and Junbin took too long to adjust Falcons could've won
NineK: I felt Crazy Raccoons prepared very well. It didn't feel like Falcons lost cause their level of play was worse but just little things here and there got in the way. But CR pulling out Hog and stuff was interesting.
Rush: The Hog stuff they got from us
NineK: Yeah I know lol. From what I know Falcons has seen all of those picks before but probably didn't expect it to pop out when it did and caught them off guard. Though the only criticism of their play I can bring is their ability to hold the point in OverTime. They don't hold it as well
Aid: True end of Map 1 CR should NOT have won
NineK: Yeah that stickiness on point Falcons is worse. Like the little decisions that contribute on the outside of our minds to winning CR is better. I don't think they were mechanically outplayed outside of against the Hog that map. The last control point they threw away though.
Aid: Yeah letting it get to the point where CR could clutch was the issue
NineK: I actually remember in some interview Lip said his teams strength was to juggle the point very well. Like Wow these guys think about everything. Like when they were Shanghai I have a clip of them just perfectly lined up to touch in OT perfectly. Obviously it isn't Falcons don't care about that stuff, but in a battle of two super teams with amazing mechanics it can only be the little things that swing it one way or the other
Aid: Little things definitely can do it
NineK: I would love to see Over Time clutch statistics
Aid: I felt Stalker was very impressive on the Venture. Nobody knew how this hero was played and he did so well.
NineK: I don't get why they couldn't play on the live patch though
Rush: Aren't they separate servers so if the live blows up you can separately have this? I asked you day 1 if it would be on 0 ping right? I guess I predicted something might go wrong
NineK: I just never know what their standards are for what decisions they make or who makes them
Topic 8: Crazy Raccoons
Aid: Watching this game you learned why they're the best.
Rush: Please put Max in they don't use him enough you're gonna win anyways
NineK: It's not like they didn't even play him
Aid: Impactful things for me was Heessang. Heessang was just so good at the game. Tracer, Echo, Venture, Pharah, or Genji he literally didn't lose in any DPS mirror. It was such a strength for them. Like he just always wins the trade and flexes so well to let Lip play his comfort picks. Junbin got MVp but my pick was definitely Hessang
Rush: I keep thinking he should've been this good last year. I thought he was a guaranteed Rookie of the Year. Literally since I first saw him I thought he would be Rookie of the Year
NineK: We had a lot of issues.
Aid: Shock 2023 didn't exist guy
NineK: Don't ask anyone related none of us will want to talk about it. But I felt they showed us a lot of heroes, Lip and Shu are just always good but I really enjoyed Junbin recently. I didn't notice the main supports though
Aid: This meta in particular is really tough for main supports
NineK: Just so much to look at if you're a main support and process
Chat: What is Masaa looking at?
NineK: His deaths in the kill feed
Aid: They lost in the winners side but won in the end right? Chorong played off in my opinion there. His Timings felt slightly off and then better in grand finals.
NineK: Honestly it almost feels like main support can only be as good as the team.
Rush: I'm coaching again and I've noticed there's so much for Lucio to worry about right now. Like you're half a millisecond late and your team blows up
Aid: I mentioned it cause he's usually so flawless.
Rush: That's just the meta. In Orisa meta you just sit around.
NineK: Yeah the Mauga E key is weird. It feels like no one ever knows when it's on so it's so hard to account for. Like when hitscan is meta they just deal consistent damage but now with double flexdps it's even harder to do risk assessment
NineK: This meta was fun as a viewer
Aid: The DPS battles of this meta were very fun
Topic 9: Korea > EU > NA. Uncoachable>PlatChat?
NineK: It shouldn't be sk clear but it's so clear
Aid: I was so ready to see the NA and EU rivalry explode here
NineK: Come to think of it there are Koreans on all the NA teams and none on the European teams
Aid: And yet they still lost with Koreans
NineK: You sound racist lol
Aid: I mean they have former OWL GOATs and are losing
Rush: Honestly isn't it crazy to think how bad North America is even with Korea supplementing their talent. Isn't NA terrible then?
Aid: No if that were the case the Koreans would have been carrying their rosters as hard as Kai and Kevster did theirs.
Rush: Didn't they all have a member or two that played very well
Aid: What did you think of the meta read differences? It felt like NA didn't practice enough or something.
Rush: Didn't you say you thought NA > EU
Aid: I did feel that way at the time
Rush: I told you they only looked strong cause they were punching down on terrible competition
Aid: Maybe Europe gets better on LAN?
Rush: That's why those guys said they were better than us right? (Uncoachable) They play the game with better strats than us or something
NineK: No let's just say they heard our criticisms of NA and EU and they listened to us unlike NA so they improved to win.
Aid: Ahh they listened to Overwatch University to win. Of course you need to watch us.
Rush: You know what? I think Plat Chat doesn't read about us right? But Uncoachable definitely seems to and that's why EU beat NA. That's the difference.
Aid: True we are 3 people just speaking truths
Rush: Put Respect on Commander X
Aid: Korea EU union
Rush: NA needs to watch us too.
Aid: NA teams need to watch us more
NineK: (watching VOD of Ence vs Toronto) wow Kai Kevster really are good
Aid: Merit switched to Sojourn here off Cassidy probably cause he was annoyed things weren't working out.
Rush: Well the enemy has Sig he needs to swap to Sojourn
NineK: Why don't they just play monkey I to Ences comp?
Aid: That's what I mean by them not being prepared
NineK: I'm curious. I heard Sugarfree and Vega got roasted. Why?
Aid: I didn't understand Sugarfree but Vega made a lot of mistakes
NineK: Isn't it just cause the other 3 won Overwatch League last season so people are only attacking the other 2? Like we're those 2 particularly worse enough to be worth this roasting?
Aid: No it just looked like the team was a mess. They lost all their ult fights.
Rush: Main supports always look bad on the losing teams.
(They just watch Defiant lose every ult fight and get confused for a bit)
Aid: Kai Kevster were better than Merit Sugarfree too
NineK: (keeps watching the VOD) How on Earth did they lose this fight now? Did Rupal just not heal properly or something.
NineK: The way I see it the Western players just suck at using Suzu. (Keeps watching the VOD) I don't get it they should've won there
Aid: Ahh so Vega wasn't at fault it was Rupal
NineK: I actually think he might be the one at fault at least right here in the VOD
Rush: (smiling) If you insult Rupal he's gonna go off and get angry on the Internet again
NineK: I remember he got so mad at you
Rush: It's not like I even roasted him directly
NineK: We drank so much during that I can't remember
Rush: I said some stuff about Sugarfree and he got so mad
NineK: Coach what are you gonna do if Sugarfree retires cause of us?
Rush: Uncoachable was right about the situation though they said they didn't get why Rupal was getting so angry over banter
NineK: But their target selection and everything seems so off the micro is completely off
Aid: Toronto didn't prepare Mauga right?
Rush: You can definitely tell they're boomed cause usually when their opponents pull out Sigma comps they go Rein to counter
NineK: I asked a bit about why they didn't play Rein into the Sigma. Someone usually wins tank fights off counterpixking so I was confused
Rush: Why didn't he do that then. He got smacked up by Mauga and wanted to try it
Aid: Feels like they just in the moment just tried to copy what they thought was good
NineK: Looking at the VOD I think Someone just can't play Mauga. But the thing was everyone had a different meta read because nothing seemed extremely overtly broken. That's probably why the Western teams thought Korea was beatable. It genuinely probably seemed doable in scrims.
Aid: Then it's that. Europe was confident they were right about their meta read while NA folded and thought "maybe we were wrong?"
NineK: Haha it could be
Aid: Europe was like "what are you on about? What we say is meta is correct" and ran it down with their Sigma Ramatrra comps while NA was like "Oh maybe Korea was right about this?"
Rush: Europe was a bit smarter than NA. They knew they couldn't beat the Korean comps bit were like "wait we can still beat these guys in NA with our comps" looks even against M80 they're using the Ram comps we know aren't meta. Cause they're smart enough to realize even if they have the wrong meta read it's still enough to beat NA. NA was like "Oh wow those Mauga comps seem good let's try to figure out how to play it"
NineK and Aid: So they tried copying and failed
Rush: Honestly if you aren't going to win anyway because of the wrong meta read playing like EU did will likely get you further
NineK: That makes sense. You placed higher, you got the right to shit talk, you made more money, and you got more slots for EWC.
NineK: I talked to Christfer and he made me laugh so much. I was with Junkbuck and Crusty after Falcons beat SSG right. He said they found out how to beat the Mauga comp in theory but had no idea how to beat the dive. I was like "Then you can't win" haha there's no point
Aid: True
NineK: (Still laughing) In the end the funniest thing was Falcons lost to that dive too
Topic 10: SSG vs Crazy Raccoons
Aid: So EU slayed America and had to fight Korea.
NineK: I still genuinely don't understand the Havana pick even now. Cause you can even pick whether you attack or defend first wouldn't you wanna defend first?
Rush: Some teams like to attack first
NineK: But when you're in a predicament and losing wouldn't you want to start on defense?
Rush: They wanted to roll them to destroy CRs mentals
NineK: But it seemed like the only mentals that got destroyed on Havana was theirs.
Rush: Maybe this was their "ahh we figured out how to beat the Mauga comp" attempt?
NineK: I kinda wanted to ask after they lost but I didn't. Like maybe if they got to stage a team fight properly at all it might have worked?
Rush: I'll say as someone whose tried the Rein can't beat Mauga comps the Rein can't leave spawn.
NineK: The thing is Mauga has just replaced Junker Queen in brawl comps like this cause his skills are too good in a competitive team work setting
Chat: Mentioning Funnyastro roasted for performance
NineK: But the thing is there is nothing the Lucio can do in this meta. Like main support is always hard in OW2 but now it's way harder
Aid: Like you wanna avoid the Mauga stomp? You go on the walls. You go on the walls? The Cassidy 2 taps you.
Rush: Okay but if a Mauga stomps you that's your fault.
Aid: It's really tough for main supports even Masaa never mind he died to Stalk3r by wall riding in front of him
NineK: It's so easy to Ajax right now for them too
Aid: So this tournament showed EU was really behind Korea why do you think that is?
NineK: Tempo?
Rush: Practice partners? People said "CR could only practice against Once Again so they should be bad" but maybe Europe couldn't practice against us is why they they were worse
Aid: I think map selection helped as well
NineK: True they don't have this system in FaceIt League
Aid: Yeah if they were a bit better with those picks wouldn't they have been a bit better
NineK: I wish there were more map and mode diversity choices allowed. Like when CR loses they'll pick Suravasa and when Falcons lose they'll pick Junk City
Rush: Yeah but won't western teams just pick all the direct flat maps
NineK: I just wish like if there's a team good at payload maps they wouldn't only get 1 payload map every 5 games
Rush: I wish they would fix Flashpoint though. The point goes away so quickly you have to play Lucio
NineK: I did feel really bad for the main supports these days. It's probably really fun for DPS. But they felt bad for tanks and finally buffed them.
Topic 11: SSG vs Ence (Aids Choice)
Aid: I saw the Ence vs SSG game as something I wanted to really highlight here. Ence lost but I thought "Yeah these guys were OWL players for sure" Ence brought defensive Mei against the SSG Rein comp
NineK: How did they lose Midtown though
Rush: It was losable since they had a Tracer there
NineK: If Backbone was in 3-0?
Aid and Rush: Absolutely
Rush: There's nothing for Tracer to do here
Aid: Kevster was Mei here and really good. Like what can't this man do?
Rush: What can't he do? Win.
NineK: He's won before
Rush: Wait you're right he has won a few times actually wait he's won quite a bit
Aid: I just felt like at least in this map Ence played so well
NineK: Kevster comms have gotten really good
Aid: I was watching and felt when Kai and Kevster are going they're really good
Topic 12: SSG vs Falcons (NineKs Choice)
NineK: I loved the strategies Falcons used in Circuit Royale. They knew the Rein would probably come out so they used Pharah with the Lifeweaver
NineK: Go to the clip where Hadi shattered the team near point b. The crowd was genuinely so loud during that moment. I got chills from the moment and realized how popular Hadi was. It was also after this game that the crowd really started getting involved and cheering for players whenever they did a sick play. Like when other teams did well the crowd would cheer so hard for them the venue started to shake. The stage was so well made too.
Aid: This map pick also confused me
NineK: I didn't think it was too bad. Isn't this just the Rush classic of playing with a Lucio to get as many fights as possible
Rush: Yeah but the Rein comp is all these guys always do anyways. I did this cause you take 3 fights and defend on the 3rd with ults. But you can't defend against the Mauga with this comp.
Aid: That's why Hadi swapped immediately
NineK: Maybe they just thought Hanbin would run out on the Sigma
Rush: If it was the first day of the event that would make sense to not know they would run out the Mauga
NineK: It was day 2. Landon is really good but Hadi had that star quality right now. I think that's very important.
Aid: Man the Genji was so clean I love watching Genji never boring.
NineK: Genji is fun
Rush: If Genji does this stuff a lot (lots of blade kills) he gets nerfed real soon after
NineK: Seriously Genji pops up on a stream and next week you see "We found Genji too strong so we nerfed him"
Aid: Genji is hard to solo queue with you definitely need a team around him.
NineK: Genjis pointless without a real team. Cassidy I personally like but find way too OP
Rush: It's just his HP it's too high why is it him at 275
Aid: I did some content with Venture recently and
NineK: What rank?
Aid: Diamond
NineK: Hahaha
Aid: You disrespecting diamonds? My viewers were wondering just how far I'd climb. I'm basically doing and Unranked to Diamond. Please be aware chat I'm not a smurf that's just the level I'm at.
Topic 12: Falcons vs CR Gibraltr
Aid: I was going mad seeing this map
NineK: Absolutely a failure from the coaches
Aid: So they managed to defend okay on Defense right? And the entire round felt like 2 teams just hard out mechanicing each other and I thought they would do the same thing on offense. Then suddenly they ran out the Mauga comp.
Rush: They did really well and then got goofy
Aid: I felt the same
Rush: I just didn't understand what they were trying to do. Was it yo come to point we will fight you head on or yo you stay there we will go catch you
Aid: I feel like it was the former
NineK: If that's the case they needed a Cassidy
Aid: Also NineK you mentioned CR were very good at juggling the point right? In Gibraltr it was the Winston touching point and then when he jumped out the Tracer did it next they did that so well they melted the time away.
NineK: I feel like that shouldn't be possible given the comp they were playing into so I guess the DPS just missed the timing to contest properly
Rush: So Falcons Tracer messed up then
NineK: The Tracer and Venture both messed up.
Rush: Did the Tracer get pressured out by Lip?
NineK: I think they just played poorly but either way this is the fault of the coaches
Aid: This map hurt my heart
Rush: They missed their opportunity by letting the dive get to their ults
NineK: What was the next map?
Rush: I think they won the next one.
Aid: I just thought since they defended so well that they would keep that Tempo and keep it going on offense
NineK: It just feels so extra bad cause they worked so long to get that one Mauga ult and lost anyways I don't think it's wrong they tried this comp out. Just that they stayed on it too long.
Aid: My chat kept asking why they never swapped
NineK: But the thing is once they failed to get through and the enemy got their ults it was over. It was a coaching failure. The Oasis game too. The dogfight at the end.
Aid: Oh that one was crazy too
Rush: I didn't see it
Aid: It started here I'll play the clip. The ult cycle definitely favored Falcons.
Rush: Neither team had much
Aid: But Falcons had window blade and wakiki coming up.
Rush: CR died late too. The Tracers gonna have to touch the point.
(Watches clip further)
Rush: This was Fielders mistake
Aid: He should've saved Smurf so he could use his wakiki
Rush: No he wasted his window just now they just all went right. Then it was over when the kiriko ult came out
NineK: Wow they really got no window value
Rush: They all just ran to the right
NineK: Honestly just watching it at the event and seeing it again now this was a Falcons error. Like yes they got no value off the window but they were also very indecisive in how to deal with the enemy Venture pulling out. I said this earlier too and yeah they threw Gibraltr but it started here. Those little moments where they absolutely should win they lost.
Aid: We plan to stop here today. Next time we will have Coach Moon over to interview
NineK: We are actually kind of backed up with guests.
Aid: Yeah we just keep asking people and then randomly delaying them.
Topic 14: Random Short Q&A
Chat: Is it hard to get player guests?
Aid: No it's very doable
(Donation about NineK)
Aid: Thank you for the donation and compliments to NineK
NineK: The hardest part about interviewing the players you should know
Aid: They can't talk properly
NineK: It won't be that different from the 3 of us talking.
Aid: If it's a fun guy who can banter with us there wouldn't be any issues
NineK: Also players low key have a bit of awkwardness being with coaches. Like being a student under a teacher at school. Yes chat Smurf is one of our pushed back guests
Aid: We have a Spark question. Do you have a sponsor?
Rush: I already answered.
NineK: What do we think of the Proper retirement thoughts? That's just normal for players who lose in those situations. It's very hard and I do feel bad for pros in that situation. Coaches staff and players need to cheer him up.
Chat: Meta read failures?
NineK: I mean who would this apply to? They all just did whatever they wanted
Rush: Let's just say it was NA
Aid: They were last place so it wasn't NAs meta
NineK: Rather than a meta read failure. They liked the other kids lunch and tried to steal it but failed
Rush: They took the lunch and then got indigestion
Chat: Was the coach gap very big?
Aid: It was unavoidable to say it didn't have an effect
NineK: It probably did take too long for them to get used to it in the West. Either way the map pool for push and flash point are too small. The first map being random was weird
Aid: Yeah I was watching thinking top seed got to choose but didn't get that feeling at all watching
NineK: Funny and Masaas ability?
Aid: They're aggressive Lucio but in this meta you get nothing for being aggressive
NineK: Vega is aggressive too. Lucio is useful for his AOE heals

2024.06.05 12:34 Substantial_Radio488 I Called Out ImJustZander's Lies about Dream Team and here's the aftermath and behind the scenes from it, aka a lot of content creators are really weird.

Hi, I'm JoJo Mancini. A few months ago, I called out ImJustZander for spreading horrible lies about the Dream Team in a YouTube video you can watch here.
(the links should be bold)
In that video, I discussed how Zander has made three videos about Dream that are obviously fabricated to make Dream look bad, as well as other content creators.
  1. In this one he claims "Dream confirmed a really disturbing audio in a fit of rage."
  2. In this one he says Dream performed sexual acts towards a Technoblade cosplayer.
  3. In this video he summarizes all the stuff he’s said.
In my video, I go through each claim Zander has made about Dream and debunk it, even including clips from Dream's "the truth" video so Dream can speak for himself. The video is chopped into sections, so if you watch it, you can skip to each person I defend.
Anyways, this is the aftermath of everything that has come out since then that I have been sitting on because I wanted to be the bigger person. But since Zander wants to say I’m insane, I’m just going to speak up about every stupid thing ive seen since then
After the video was uploaded, I sent the video to Zander in DMs and told him to watch it fully before he says anything since I had said I would take legal action if he tried to slander me in any way. link to our dms
He makes a paragraph for each point of my video, and my (better) paragraphs correlate to his.
Here are some things I’ve noticed from those chats:
-He says he has a team and a crisis counselor
Crisis counselor
(copy and pasted from my reddit, I want to debunk this right off the bat)
It's becoming increasingly clear to me that this team of researchers doesn't actually exist. In a text he sent me following the video, he mentioned having a crisis counselor on his team to assist the victims. When I requested the email of this crisis counselor to have a discussion, he responded with, "You can’t just demand to talk to my staff; respectfully, anything you need to say, just speak to me. They don’t want to deal with any of the social media stuff." In one part of his message, he states that I must communicate with him, yet a couple of paragraphs later, he concludes with, "This will be my last message because I still feel like you’ll be a little bit combative, and I have so much stuff to do." So, am I supposed to talk to him or not?
Furthermore, he claims that this "crisis counselor" doesn't want to handle social media matters, but they supposedly specialize in assisting victims from social media. Moreover, a crisis counselor typically operates on a hotline, and it's unlikely that he has a 24/7 hotline with just one person. It's also unusual for a crisis counselor to be integrated into a social media team.
Zander doesn't personally know any of the victims in his narrative, yet he supposedly reaches out to them. However, if someone famous were in a dramatic situation and a random person approached them offering to connect them with a crisis counselor, who would agree to that? Anyone with a social media presence (or any level of common sense) would likely be trained to understand that venting to strangers, especially ones who might disseminate what's said, is unwise.
Hypothetically speaking, if this is indeed what's happening, then all the behind-the-scenes evidence we don't see isn't real (obviously).
NatCat
In a now-deleted tweet, (that can be seen in my video at 11:27) he talks about how he always reaches out to victims before he makes his videos, and in dms said he had reached out to NatCat before his videos came out. He says that NatCat never said she was lying or stretching the truth. Obviously, NatCat wouldn’t say she’s lying.
Important note: NatCat and Zander follow each other on Twitter and probably have since the first time Zander reached out. They even have a few replies to each other long after the Dream truth video came out.
After Dream’s video came out, he said he was going to make a response to dreams video. He never does because Dream did an amazing job in his video. but then a month later claims theres other behind the scene stuff that hasn't come out yet
NatCat has multiple tweets saying "leave Dream alone" and "he didn’t groom anyone", also claiming to have spoken to Dream in DMs. I think NatCat is just a confused, sad person. I think she was told stuff that she thought would be helpful if she spoke up about to help victims but just got told shitty information by shitty people. Out of everyone in this post, this is one of two I genuinely feel bad for. Please dont send her hate from this.
in a now deleted tweet I have saved NatCat says "Hey guys, somebody directly involved here! Leave Dream alone dude. Amanda lied and was served legal papers. Anastasia edited screenshots. And Jamie wasn't groomed." (anyone who wants these screenshots can dm me on twitter at jo_jo_mancini)
tweet of natcat saying she was lied too
NatCat later claims, about three months after the Dream truth video with the Sophie Texas situation where Dream says if you have a problem with me then message me, she said in a now-deleted tweet, “Oh, you mean the person I’ve been trying to message for two months? IN TER EST ING.” leaving a month difference where she wasn't trying to reach out to dream after the truth video dropped
NatCat claims she wasn’t groomed and she’s not a victim of Dream’s; she was just lied to. So what the hell is Zander talking about? What is NatCat trying to reach out to Dream with? My bets are on them plotting something against Dream again, and when whatever they made up went public, there would be “proof” of NatCat trying to reach out beforehand. Making the timeline Dream posting his video, one month of them coming up with a perfect lie, two months of plotting evidence, and maybe a future tiktok from zander 🤷‍♀️
But what are the odds that zander would get other content creators who hate dream to tell him their stories so he can make slanderous videos? haha thats crazy talk...
Sophie Texas
If you’re not caught up on the drama, Sophie claims the Dream Team are horrible people behind the scenes. And the “behind the scenes” was her not getting a response in an Among Us game… four years ago… okay.
In one of Zander’s more recent TikToks, he claims not all MCYT are bad, but the ones he’s spoken to are the good ones. And then he name-drops Aimsey TV, MaxGG, and Sophie Texas. name dropping tiktok
There is just no chance Sophie has anything actually bad on Dream except for accidentally being ignored in an Among Us lobby. So what are you talking to Zander about? Are you trying to make your stupid story into a stupid TikTok? Make Dream look bad by spreading lies? I bet. Because it doesn’t matter if Zander is lying or not to brain-dead TikTokers; if someone has enough followers, they must always be telling the truth. Zander always talks about how he helps these creators behind the scenes, and yet this is the list of all the creators he’s supposedly talked to. And before you say, well, there could be others! No, there are not. And no amount of alluding to there being some can actually make these hero delusions come true.
Aimsey TV
So in the TikTok mentioned above, he name-drops Aimsey and says they’ve spoken a little bit, so whatever they talked about, Zander must have liked it since he says Aimsey is a "good MCYT".
And yet, the videos Aimsey could have complimented on are GeorgeNotFound “raping” Caiti, Zander taking clips of Caiti’s VODs (which is against her boundaries) [and I’ll come back to this], Caiti’s and Shubble’s stories being used as a clout grab, and lies about Dream that have already been disproven.
Alright, pick one. Which one do you think she complimented? And the fact Zander lies and exaggerates in each video, and Aimsey still complimented it? What are you, as a content creator, praising this? Especially when there are other content creators out there who are reporting this stuff in support of Caiti without lying or exaggerating? Why not compliment them?
Caitibuggz
Aimsey and Caiti are probably close; Caiti has probably told Aimsey how much she doesn’t like these TikTokers doing this since she told us on stream she doesn’t like it. Caiti Buggz doesn't even like ImJustZander too.
"Even the fact that reporters are messaging me, asking for my take on it all or my comment on it, is insane. Actually, choke! Are you joking? It’s insane!" This is a direct quote from Caiti Buggz, said at 24:19 in this video . The proof that Zander is the reporter she's talking about can be seen at 11:27 in my video. There is a screen recording of his now-deleted tweet, where he says, "Also, my process has always been to see if we can reach out to the victims. Most of the time, we're able to. I have a crisis counselor on standby for if a victim does feel triggered and needs to talk to someone. We weren't able to get in contact with Caiti, so we just went forward with all of our notes from her streams and George's stream."
So if Aimsey isn’t endorsing Zander’s Caiti video, is she talking about the Dream videos? Fork found in kitchen
Before the GNF and Caiti situation even happened, Dream was invited to a party at the same TwitchCon Anaheim. He declined the invite with the infamous "the ops are there." Aimsey also happened to be at this event. The Dream Team knew that the Brighton Bastards didn't like them even before the Caiti-GNF situation. This could be about the accusations that Dream had on him at the time, but Aimsey could have just talked to Dream about it.
A lot of content creators knew Dream was innocent even before his video came out because they actually talked to him. Here's a direct quote from Dream's Reddit:
"Many creators that expressed to me behind the scenes that 'even if the allegations are true' they wouldn't care because they're not a big deal, are some of the same people that were later praised for 'no longer associating with me' due to these allegations. Many creators never asked me any questions at all, even sent private messages of support, and then chose to ask me questions the same day I had drama with another creator they were better friends with. Many creators pretended not to be associated with me publicly, making jokes of the potential abuse, while privately being positive to me. Other creators dropped me as soon as I was no longer working on projects they were heavily invested in. But were perfectly fine 'playing dumb' when it benefited them for their next big stream. Many creators that knew about this specific situation for a long time and hated me long before it, continued to make slights, without me ever having any idea why they were doing it. They publicly attacked me far more than ever saying anything negative towards George. Even though I had no idea of anything remotely about this situation being a thing, and they thought that he was a horrible assaulter. It's incredibly obvious to me that this is because they already hated me, and not because they care about any potential victim, even if they are close friends."
And yeah, Dream’s busy, but I fully believe Dream would have been able to talk things through if he was ever even given a chance.
Also, side note: Zander was saying I was weird and obsessive about Dream even though we don't know each other, but honestly, count your blessings. If I knew Dream, you'd literally be cooked.
Even Prezoh, a close friend of Caiti’s, has Zander blocked, which I'm not entirely sure is from him being annoying or the Caiti situation, 50/50 chance bro is BLOCKED
He says he’s spoken to MaxGG, but the only MaxGG video on his page is the one where Max is screaming for seven minutes. So Max was probably thanking him for that. But that's still odd; he's a reporter breaking your best friend’s boundaries and making GNF out to be a rapist, and you're still praising him? Why?
I think Caiti has been convinced by her friends that the Dream Team are bad people (which is something George himself has said), and she's the only one who genuinely feels hurt by George, while the others are doing everything they can to take down the Dream Team. That's why the other content creators are praising Zander for spreading false info, while Caiti is the one who says she hates that people are getting their info from TikTok or clips or reporters and not from her directly. She says that a lot throughout this VOD.
final thoughts Caitibugzz VOD [March 24, 2024]
Im genuinely interest on what anyone else has to say about this so please leave your thoughts below

2024.05.30 01:36 NickryBot A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO LEARNING STANDARDS

Hi all - jazz bassist here and long-time lurker of jazz
It seems that just about every day there is a post here along the lines of "What standards should I be learning?". As much as I love the enthusiasm, there is only so many times you can answer this question before getting entirely bored of it. So, I thought I'd put together a somewhat comprehensive answer to this question. If you find this helpful please upvote or comment so that more newcomers can see this and not have to ask the same question for the 7 billion-th time.
First, some quick notes:
  1. Different places may have different standards. I am from Cape Town, South Africa, which has a large and exciting jazz scene. When some bassists from America visited I asked them what standards they played most where they're from, and while we mentioned some similar ones, there were ones we never played and some I've never heard of. Honestly the best thing you can do is go to a local jam and make a list of what they play there.
  2. LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. The best thing you can do to learn standards is just to listen to as much jazz as you possibly can. You don't need to dedicate your life to jazz - I certainly listen to all sorts of music - but if you decide you want to learn standards you will do a great service to yourself to immerse yourself deeply into jazz music for a few weeks. Listen to albums by the greats, find playlists on your streaming service, get recommendations from friends (or this list). When someone suggests a song, don't just listen to that song. Find the album it's from and listen to that album. Even if you don't learn the changes, you will learn names and internalise melodies.
  3. Download iReal Pro or buy a Real Book. I can wax lyrical about the caveats of these two resources, but ultimately they are two of the most useful things any jazz musician can ever use. Download iReal and immediately install the Jazz 1300 (I think it's still called that) pack. In that pack is almost every standard which will be called at a jam or standards gig. Same goes for the Real Book. Even if you don't use it to learn the melodies and you rather use your ear or another resource, these are great compilations. The pros in your community likely learnt all their standards from a Real Book.
With that out of the way, here is my little list. If your favourite standard is included please leave it in the comments but please don't attack me for not including it. I had to whittle down so much here.
KEY: B = Beginner, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced
TRAD STANDARDS:
BEBOP STANDARDS:
HARD BOP/MODAL JAZZ/POST-BOP STANDARDS:
LATIN/BOSSA-NOVA STANDARDS:
FUNK/FUSION/POP-JAZZ STANDARDS:
As said above, please offer your suggestions/edits in the comments! No need to start fights though please, I am as fallible as anyone else and am more than willing to hear other opinions and make edits where needed.
I really hope this helps some of you!

You know that unsettling feeling you sometimes get when you're home alone? That sudden shiver that races up your spine, making your skin crawl even when you know you're the only one there? It's the kind of feeling that makes you hesitate to cross that dark hallway in your house, your mind playing tricks on you, warning of unseen dangers lurking in the shadows of the place you call home.
I never knew my parents. My grandmother was the only constant presence in my life, a tough woman hardened by years of hard work and the harsh climate of Krasnoyarsk. She, like many women of her time, toiled in one of the area's numerous metallurgical factories. Though she wasn't always around, she cared for me as best she could, even if her love often came with a stern demeanor. With two mouths to feed, she often had to leave me in the care of our neighbors for long stretches of time, often returning only to sleep at home.
Our neighborhood was composed mostly of factory workers and their families, who lived in small huts that offered little relief from the cold. Our own house was no exception. Tucked away on the edge of the community, it was a modest shack of barely 50 square meters. Inside, the walls were painted a weathered yellow, while the floor was covered with wooden planks. Curiously, the exterior was camouflaged by logs, attempting to conceal the concrete beneath. The house wasn't that much by itself, but the patches of trees that surrounded the house left a clear area where the house sat, making it feel like it didn't belong to the city.
My grandmother had a peculiar taste in decorating. The outside of our house was adorned with a variety of ornaments and bird sculptures, painted in bright colors. When she decided on a particular decoration, she refused to change it, no matter what. Inside, the walls were adorned with framed photos of unfamiliar faces, intercalated with portraits of unfamiliar people. My grandmother had a habit of collecting these photos and scattering them around the house in a seemingly random fashion. She also had a habit of rearranging furniture every few weeks, which left me perplexed and curious as to her motivations.
Whenever I asked her about her frequent rearrangements, her expression would turn somber, silencing any further questions. It was an unspoken rule in our household: certain questions were best left unanswered.
Sometimes my grandmother had no choice but to leave me home alone, mainly because Anna, the neighbor who usually took care of me, couldn't, either for medical or personal reasons. On those days, she would come home from work earlier than usual and seem more exhausted than ever. However, there was a subtle sense of relief in her eyes when I was there, as if she feared something was going to happen to me during those brief hours of solitude. But the worst days were those when my grandmother was not able to get home before sunset; those days were the ones I dreaded the most.
During the day, the small forest surrounding our house was my playground, sometimes even losing track of time until the sun began to set. But when it got dark, the trees would transform into menacing shadows that would cast themselves over the house.
Sometimes, when I closed the curtains, an unsettling feeling would come over me: I felt I was being watched by invisible eyes. On rare occasions, I would summon the courage to peek outside and see two piercing white orbs fixed to the house. Hastily, I would close the window and crawl into bed, burying myself under the covers and shivering with fear. Struggeling to stay awake, terrified at the thought of the murmurs returning, pearcing through the walls while the presence lurked on the other side of my window, in the distance.
Most nights, exhaustion would get the better of me, and I would fall asleep. Whenever I woke up, usually in the morning, the sound of wood scraping against the floor would signal that my grandmother was moving the furniture around.
Shuted in my room until she was done, listening to the eerie symphony of the wood slowly and leisurely creeping against each other while I waited for her approval to leave the room.
During those days when I was confined to my room until my grandmother finished rearranging the furniture, she always seemed to be in a hurry, almost frantic, to get us out of the house. She would quickly hand me over to our neighbor, Anna, and leave me in her care until the next day, appearing extremely tired.
Normal days were spent playing with two of the neighbor kids, Pavel and Varina.
Pavel was one of the few kids I played with when I was little. He never let the stories that were told about our house and my grandmother be a problem for us to become friends. We met playing one day like any other day on the back of the river that crosses the back of our neighborhood. We started a competition to see who was able to roll a stone over the water the most times. We spent hours running up and down, looking at all the possible stones to find the perfect ones that would lead us to victory against each other. I lost the competition that day, but I got the best friendship I could have wished for.
We met Varinka two years later. Her parents moved to our neighborhood from another nearby city because they got an offer in one of the factories. The one that started talking to her was Pavel, being the sociable child that he was. Both of them became close friends almost immediately. Soon after, I followed Pavel's steps and befriended her.
On the days that I spent with Anna, the three of us used to go on our own little adventures that were restricted to meal and snack times, and you must believe that we squeezed out as much time as possible. Our usual routine used to be to build hideouts, climb trees, and play hide and seek in the small forest that wrapped my house.
Pavel, Varinka, and I had multiple spots with small hideouts that barely resisted a day or two because of the poor choice of materials that we built them with, but still, there were two that held the most: the tree house and the cave.
The Tree House was the closest one to my house; it consisted of a dead tree that was hollow inside. It was quite small, and the only things that we kept inside the tree house were some rocks that we used as chairs and a big piece of wood that we used as a table. The area that surrounded the tree house was quite dense with poor sunlight because of the multiple trees that grew there. Because of the many days we spent there playing, a path was created because of our footsteps, making a small path to the west part of my house. While the tree house was a five-minute walk through the forest, the cave was further inside the forest. As the name foreshadowed, the cave was a hole besides a small hill. The cave wasn't much bigger than the tree, but the fact that it was a cave made our minds think that it was for some reason cooler than the tree house. There was the place that we used to hang out the most whenever we got the chance to go to the forest. The cave was decorated inside as much as a child could. We took some chairs that Pavel found in the dumpster while Varinka brought some flowers from her garden, and meanwhile, I brought a small bird feeder that my grandmother recently changed for a newer one.
Those were the happiest memories that I could remember—those times when we could play freely without anything that could worry us—but sadly, those days weren't meant to last forever.
One day that Anna left me to go to the forest. As usual, Pavel, Varinka, and I met at the river as always, walking while following the water flow towards the forest. We chatted about some nonsens that Pavel used to bring out, laughing, and we walked in the forest, following the small path that we used to go in and out of the forest from the side of the river.
As we moved deeper into the forest, an uneasy feeling came over us, overshadowing our carefree chatter. The familiar sights and sounds of the forest seemed different that day, as if the trees themselves were whispering warnings we couldn't decipher.
Pavel, Varinka, and I followed the beaten path, our footsteps echoing in the silent forest. But as we approached the clearing where our hideout awaited us, an eerie silence descended, suffocating the once vibrant atmosphere. The air grew heavy with anticipation. An unspoken tension hung over us like a shroud.
Arriving at the Tree House, we found it shrouded in darkness and its hollow trunk in eerie silence. The rocks that had served as our seats lay scattered on the forest floor, as if they had been abandoned. Even the dense treetops seemed to retain their usual warmth, casting long shadows that stretched out like accusing fingers.
With a nervous glance between us, we continued on, our steps faltering as we approached the cave. But as we drew closer, we realized that the entrance was blocked by fallen debris, as if it had been sealed shut by some unseen force.
A chill ran down my spine as I exchanged glances with Pavel and Varinka. What had once been our sanctuary now looked as if an earthquake would have knocked down the entrance.
As the first tendrils of fear coiled in our hearts, a distant sound echoed—a sound that sent a shiver down my spine.
It was a faint whimper, barely louder than the sound of leaves against the wind, but loud enough to startle us all.
Varinka, frightened, stood motionless, with a desperate look that didn't focused at nothing in particular, trying to see where such a chilling sound could come from. When I saw Pavel, he was standing before Varinka, holding a stone that he must have picked up from the pile he was standing on whileI was looking at the entrance to the cave, and then... Something started to flow through the rocks.
It was a strange liquid that had a carmesi tone that seemed to glow in the shadows—a liquid that appeared to have no visible limits and seemed to come out of nowhere.
I didn't notice how much time I spent looking at the red liquid flowing through the rocks when I noticed something; whatever thing was wimpering, it wasn't outside with us. It was inside the cave.
I didn't know what to do. Varinka was already running back to her house while Pavel was frozen in the same position as he was, looking at the entrance of the cave, but his face didn't seem scared or shocked anymore; instead, his face seemed like he was hypnotized. He took a step towards the cave.
When I realized what I was going to do, I rushed at him, gripping him by the shoulder and shaking him, trying to shake him out of his trance. After a few seconds, Pavel looked around in confusion as the faint whimpers continued to sound behind the rubble, increasingly agonizing but whimpering with the same intensity.
When Pavel finally looked at me, the first thing he said was, “Where is Varinka?”, “She's gone already,” I replied frantically, trying to get him to start moving. Hearing me,he dropped the stone, which splashed some of the strange crimson liquid on our shoes, and ran towards the forest path, While I followed closely behind him, the whimper of the thing could still be heard behind us.
After not much time, we arrived at the river where Varinka was sobbing, catching her breath, i turned to see how Pavel was doing, i saw him with an absorbed look, watching closely the trees, almost as if something was talking to him.
That night was one of the worst that I have experienced. When my grandmother came home that night, she noticed that something was wrong at the moment that she saw me.
"What happened?" she asked with an expression that I had never seen before in her face; it seemed to be a mix of seriousness and worry.
I told her about how we had found our hideouts destroyed, the whimper, and the strange substance. Without wating any longer, she almost jumped and started to search frantically in some drawers, taking out some kind of cross that I had never seen before. It seemed similar to the catoloc corss, but in the lower part it was split in half, making it seem like two wooden legs. On all of the surface, different carvings were made; some of them seemed Russian, some of them were Nordic, some of them were Latin, and a bunch of them I can't even recognize today.
She left the cross in the middle of the house and then rushed towards the kitchen, grabbing all the meat that we had on the house and throwing it out. I looked at her with a mix of perplexity and worry, as I didn't understand what she was doing.
She took me to the bathroom and started to bathe me, scrubbing my whole body almost as if she were trying to clean out a stain from a new piece of cloth. When she was done, I noticed that my skin was red because of the rubbing.
When she was done with me, she took the same ritual with the rest of the house, opening every window, the door, and the cabinets and scrubbing them. I didn't understand what was going on; the house was almost completely dark; only the light from the lamps that we had and the full moon could be seen in the sky; the air was cold; and I was still wet from the bath.
She finished with the house and started to do the same to herself, scrubbing her skin until it became red. The sound of her breathing and the scrubbing was the only thing that could be heard; the forest was in absolute silence.
She finished, and looked at me.
"Now, let's pray," she said with a calm voice, almost too calm, as if her previous panic was never there.
We kneeled beside the strange cross and began to pray; the windows and door were still open at this point. Something could be heard outside.
As the first words started to come out of our mouths, the whimper appeared softly, as if trying to not make us notice his presence. Word after word, it grew persistent.
The moon, covered by a thin layer of clouds, enveloped our home with eerie shadows. Our prayers grew in intensity, trying to match the whimper as if we were trying to cover it with our own voice. Then, suddenly, nothing. I didn't feel cold or warmth; I didn't feel my hand brushing against my grandmother's hand; the numbness in my knees from kneeling; the cold of the night against my skin; just the whimpering, weak, almost pleasant and sweet, like a mother's call or like the sun against your skin on a spring evening. I wanted to answer him, to go to him, to let myself go.
A pull.
When I came to my senses, I was on the porch. As I looked around frantically, I saw my grandmother pulling me, with a terror I could never have imagined to have seen on her face. Then I looked to where her gaze was fixed. Slowly, as I gazed through those bird ornamentations that I had become so used to seeing, I looked towards the trees. Orbs—dozens, no, hundreds of them looking at us.
I rushed inside in an instant catching my grandmother by surprise, stuttering she kept praying, leaving the door still open, once again, we knelt, over the next few hours it tried to pull me back to him countless times, I was about to give in again on a couple of occasions but the horror on my grandmother's face anchored me to the ground in front of the cross, at one point in time the night began to fade, leaving behind its shadows and with it those observant orbs, waiting for a mistake to jump towards us, changing it’s place with a tenuous golden light, which with its arrival marked the end of the nightmare of that night, with the whimpering becoming weaker and weaker my eyes closed with exhaustion, letting me drift off into a peaceful sleep.
Knocks woke me up a few hours later; it seemed frantic. I was in bed in my pajamas, disoriented by the events of the previous night. I stood up suddenly, my heart pounding against my chest at the sudden knocking on the front door. I got up to see who was banging on the front door.
“Yakov!” Someone screamed on the other side of the door with an anguished voice. “Yakov, please open the door.”
I ran towards the door, opening it as I recognized the voice on the other side; it was the voice of Anna.
“What-what happened, Anna?” In a scared tone, I was able to ask her.
It was an unusual situation; Anna didn’t like to get to close to my house, so seeing her here on the porch was something that I didn’t expect at all.
“Pavel…” She was able to tell, under a sigh, “Pavel is lost.”
My world started to shatter as Anna was able to say those words. She continued talking, asking me questions frantically, but my mind wasn’t there.
“Do you know where he is? Did he by any chance go to your house the last night?” Ana said.
"Whimpers,” I thought out loud. Anna tried to speak, “Wha-.”
Before she could even finish what she was saying, I started to run, barefoot. I ran faster than I even imagined that I could; the adrenalin pumping in my veins kept the pain away from my feet. I ran. I really ran. As fast as I could, I really tried.
When I arrived at the cave, it was too late; the carmesi substance was only touching the stones, almost as if avoiding the ground. Once I looked up, I saw an entrance; for some reason, a hole could be seen in the middle of the debris.
“Pavel!” I cried out, my voice trembling with fear and desperation, but there was no response. I tried to move the fallen debris that was blocking the entrance with trembling hands, but it was too heavy and firmly wedged in place.
Tears began to fall as I realized the horrifying truth: Pavel was trapped inside the cave, cut off from the outside world by a rubble wall. Panic gripped my chest, squeezing the air from my lungs as I struggled to make sense of the situation.
My mind raced with a thousand thoughts and fears, each one more terrifying than the last. What if Pavel was hurt? What if he was alone and scared? What if... he wasn’t alone?
With trembling limbs, I tried to force my way into the cave, clawing at the rocks with desperate urgency. But no matter how hard I tried, the debris refused to budge, despite my desperate efforts.
Time seemed to stretch into eternity as I stood there, helpless and alone, with the sound of my own heartbeat echoing in my ears. The forest around me was silent, as if it were waiting for the unthinkable.
And then, from deep within the cave, I heard it: a faint whimper, barely audible above my own heartbeat. It was Pavel's voice, weak and muffled, but unmistakably him.
“Pavel, oh god, i-i’m here!” I called out to him, my voice breaking with terror, but there was no answer.
I realized with a sinking feeling in my stomach that Pavel was out of reach, trapped in a prison of stone and darkness with whatever called him to enter the cave. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I collapsed on the ground, overcome by grief and despair. The weight of the situation pressed down on me like a physical force, crushing me under its unbearable weight. In that moment, I felt completely alone, like a small, insignificant speck in the vastness of the universe. And as I gazed up at the sky, my vision blurred with tears. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone would ever find Pavel or if anyone would ever know what had happened to him.
But deep down, I knew the truth: Pavel was lost, swallowed up by the darkness of the cave, trapped with the thing that whimpered, and there was nothing I could do to save him. And as I sat there, alone in the forest, I saw the last stones being pulled by the strange carmesi liquid, loking them in their final place, and with them silencing Pavel to the outside world.
