Summary
Dewandaru Tree (1982)
Marni attributes her success to Gusti (god). She knows she is accused of having a tuyul
tuyul an undead infant in Indonesian and Malay folklore. [...] is typically invoked as a helper by shamans (dukun, pawang, or bomoh) by means of black magic. A common use for the toyol includes using it for financial gain, where the creature robs people of their riches, making it similar to the Babi ngepet, a boar demon in Indonesian mythology, [...] the toyol is popularly known to bring good luck to its host, but mishap to those who are unfortunate to encounter them.
She has been "requested" to donate 250,000 rupiah to the campaign. Her sugarcane harvest fetches 13,200,000 (which, for the curious, I worked out to be worth around US$20,000 today). She dreams of employing women and paying them the same as their husbands
Purwadadi Sugar Factory hosts a 3 day party at the start of milling season. The Sugarcane Couple (first stalks to be milled for the season) Parade is lead by the cucuk lampah (walking leader most common at weddings) to the sound of gamelan. During which politicians campaign for number 2, the yellow, party in the upcoming elections.
Marni and Teja visit Koh Cayadi at Gede market for help purchasing a pick-up truck, but soldiers tell them to leave. Three days earlier on Chinese New Year his dying mother had requested he go to temple - which is forbidden - and pray for her. He suspects Jalan Dukuh informed on him. The soldiers, as always, demand money.
Marni hired Bejo to drive the pick-up for anyone who wished to rent it, which was a lot during the rice harvest. Marni was expected to let the ward chief use the pick-up for free during the political campaign. Word reached Marni that the pick-up had been in an accident. 22 people had been injured when the truck drove into Bengaean Madiun (river), and Bejo had died. From the cemetery Marni went to the police station where she was shaken down by a police officer even though she was not in the car at the time of the accident. Marni balked at the injustice, but Teja, again, smoothed it over. It would cost 1 million rupiah for Bejo's fatality and the 22 injured. At Bejo's house, his mother, Yu Tini is angry and accuses Marni of being responsible for Bejo's death. She thinks Marni made a ritual offering of her son, a pesugihan.
Rahayu graduates and Marni is proud. She goes to Yogyakart State University. Teja is out in the evenings more and, though people come to watch her, TV Marni feels lonely.
(1983)
More people come regularly for money. Security posts are built with it. 11 years previously Tikno was jailed as PKI when he refused to give up his ancestral land. His wife, Yu Nah, and son, Mali, became poorer and poorer as no one would give suspected PKI family members a job. Marni sends food on the sly. Mali is found dead in the river. He was thought to have committed suicide. The villagers are relieved there will be less theft now he is gone. Another man is killed at the market and when Rahayu returns from the city for the holiday she reports the same is happening there too. Marni and Teja visit holy man Kyai Noto to get a protection prayer for Rahayu, but she refuses it as a sin.
Manggis River Fart (1984)
Rahayu is studying agriculture, and reluctantly living off Marni's money. She is more interested in Clubs and Koran recitals than class. She references the Tanjung Priok massacre
On 10 September 1984, Sergeant Hermanu, [...] told the caretaker, Amir Biki, to remove brochures and banners critical of the government. Biki refused, so Hermanu removed them himself; [...] In response, local residents, [...] burned his motorcycle and attacked Hermanu... [Two days after] Biki led a protest to the North Jakarta Military District Command office [...] with estimates ranging between 1,500 and several thousand. [...] Military personnel from the 6th Air Defence Artillery Battalion opened fire on the protestors.
Rahayu is attracted to, law lecturer, Amri Hasan. A handsome, Arabic featured, but married, sermon preacher in her Koran recital group.
Magelang (Jan 1985)
Rahayu is visiting Magelang with the Koran recital group to train locals as Koran recital teachers when Borobudur temple is bombed. Whilst watching the sunset with Amri soldiers turn up to search Mr. Amin's house, where they are staying. For failing to report their visit they had to go to the military base. 50,000 rupiah later they are released, but instead of leaving they observe 6 men being admonished for playing cards in public. The men are dunked in the Manggis river, assaulted, and made to do push ups by the soldiers. Amri objects. The soldiers give him and Iman get a beating. Once they are released they head to the hospital nearby along with the 6 wet card players.
Rahayu, Amri and co. decide they must do something. The police is not an option so they approach Taufik, a reporter at the local paper. The 6 card playing pedicab drivers have not been back to work, but they manage to locate one, Mehong, in his small village far outside the city. He is reluctant and becomes upset before finally relenting. Mehong had farted in front of the soldiers and that had made them angry enough to beat the 6 men.
The story ran in 2 papers, but nothing was done. Mehong's wife turned up at the university with news that Mehong had been kidnapped. They go to the police this time, and Taufik to the military base in Magelang. He returns with news that Mehong was found dead outside the market covered in knife wounds.
Twenty people gather in demonstration outside the Magelang military base calling for the dissmissal of the soldiers that assaulted Mehong and his friends. Things escalate and a fight breaks out between the demonstrators and soldiers.
Amri is fired. Rahayu, Iman and Arini are expelled from the University. Taufik was also fired. The reason? Causing unrest.
Setelon Flower
Singget (Jan 1986)
Rahayu is home to get Marni and Teja's blessing to become Amri's second wife. Neither of them are happy with their daughter's decision. Rahayu and Amri leave 2 days after getting married, and Marni and Teja don't talk about her anymore. Marni's wealth continues to grow. She expands her very lucrative sugar cane fields.
A year later there is still no contact between mother and daughter. More security posts are built, and soldiers demand more in security/compensation/[insert excuse here] money. 1987 and a new election is coming. Times were changing. Traditions were set aside. Even eating cassova was replaced with rice.
Koh Cayadi turns up asking to stay over. His family are in Malang. When he surfaces the next day he reveals he is a fugitive. He has been donating money for dragon dance rehersals at the temple. The troop was recently arrested for performing without paying. Three weeks after Koh Cayadi's arrival Teja died in a car accident. Rahayu didn't come home for thr funeral. For 7 days Marni's house was full. Then it was empty and only Koh Cayadi kept Mari company. One day men arrive looking for Koh Cayadi. Marni denies it and he manages to hide. Marni suspects Tonah.
Koh Cayadi and Marni discuss what their religious practices has cost them. Their luck finally runs out when soldier search the house they discover Koh Cayadi, and both he and Marki are take in for questioning. Commander Sumadi (the soldier who started shaking Marni down weekly) says for the right sum he will get her home. Koh Cayadi is accused of going against the state and possibly being PKI. Therefore, one hectare of her sugarcane fields is the price.
Tonah confesses to telling about Koh Cayadi. She thinks that Marni is going bankrupt due to the rumours, and quits after 10 years service. She is scared she will become a pesugihan offering. Marni is now alone.

2022.09.20 18:34 ChmodPlusEx Alcohol and mental health

Are there any other alcoholics around?
So i have been an alcoholic for a long time, i go thru atleast 5 cans (tall ones) a day.
I dont know if that is alot or normal.
Which has taken a big toll on my mental health. I am a high functioning alcoholic, meaning I don’t get drunk, I don’t like to get drunk, I get the buzz from beers go back home and sleep. Wake up fresh the next day and carry on.
Not all my drinking experience had been bad, its actually had been rather uneventful or good.
I have shared my previous experience drinking alone on a thread some time back..
https://www.reddit.com/askSingapore/comments/x4t079/comment/imx81ns/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
My first drink was when I was in secondary 3. My secondary school was at sembawang, the school was surrounded by open fields, as far as the eye can see and on the other side of the field was a forested area, and if you walked thru it, you’d reach sembawang beach.
The place is no longer there if you’re wondering, its all flats now.
And one day after school, I believe it was some sports day or something as school ended at 10am, my school seniors asked me to join them to drink, so I said ok, we all each “choot” 5 dollars each, went to a mama shop in sembawang, bought a bottle of Red label and a few packets of ang oon (Idk how to spell it)
Yes, you read that right, in uniform. So anyways we made our away to sembawang park, I drank 2 cups, and I was GONE!, I didn’t know how I ended up home.
I also had tried weird and disgusting liquors in secondary school, like black cat and bengkilo (idk how to spell the last one, its was Chinese rice wine, smelled like rose water, we would mix it with red bull and drink it), I think black cat is banned, as I don’t see anymore.
And after secondary school, when I became legal to drink, the best and go to drink was dewars and coke or green tea under some block with a couple of friends and their girlfriends. where at times while drinking at random times in the middle of the night there’d be “BAM, BOOM, BAM’ sounds while I’d be drinking with my friends, and when I turned around to see the source of the sound, I’d see someone on the floor covered with blood and I’d go and help the person up. Or I’d see some random group charging at us, where’d I usually say to the charging group, “ I am not involved, I am not with them”, initially I scared shit, but eventually I found that telling them “ I am not involved” they’d usually leave me alone and I’d go my way. And eventually I found the group of friends not good to hang out with because of the above reasons, and moved away
I recall once, it was my ex secondary mate’s birthday celebration, so they booked some bbq pit around our area ordered food and drinks, my ex school mates parents and relatives were there too. After cutting the cake and eating, we decided to play some games, like those charades kinda game. This bbq pit we were in, was those old fashioned bbq pit where’d be surrounded by coconut trees, I don’t think these exist anymore.
Anyways, while playing, me and a friend decided to go for a smoke, so we walked towards these trees to smoke as we didn’t want to smoke infront of my friends parents.
While smoking, I saw 3 heavily tattooed Indian dudes walking towards us, and they each had an object in their hand, 2 of them had a parang, and they were swinging it at the coconut trees. I initially thought they were cutting down the branch for wedding, as in indian weddings, they would hang threaded coconut tree leaves infront of their houses. But it was not that case, all 3 approached me and my friend. While pointing the parang at us, they asked me if I was this person, I said no I am not, and they asked where I was from, I just said I am not part of any group. And I think my friend’s dad saw this commotion, and my friends’ dad decided to bring 3 plates filled with cake, satay and stingrays came right between us, and said “hi guys, want some food, please join us”
I started drinking fully while i was in NS. And then after ORD-ing, i recall me and my fellow sqd mate would who lived a few blocks away, would wake up at 8AM apply for jobs till 1pm.
Meet at a close by mama shop buy a 6 pack each, drink till 4 pm. Headed home, showered, prayed at dinner, came back down, bought another 6 pack each and drank till 10.
Guess it we were drinking cuz we were just bored.
Anws, when I landed my first job,I kinda stopped drinking, but then as I grew older, I encountered some PSTD, got diagnosed with a string of mental issues. I found it extremely hard to seek treatment for mental health, its either expensive or the psychologist/psychiatrist were a bunch of money seeking morons. And I turned to alcohol. And I tried every weird stunts to reduce my alcohol, I thought maybe more expensive stuff would help, so I’d buy some 400 dollar bottle and cigars, go to some park and drink and smoke, didn’t help as I’d end up drinking the whole bottle in 2 days. I tried wine, I tried port.
Like for an example, I went to a private psychologist (who I shall not name but I wont recommend to anyone) some time back who charged big bucks.
The first session as with all psychologists if you didn’t know, would take longer and it will be more expensive then the a normal session, the first session with this doctor took 2 hours and I paid close to 600+
In the session, the doctor asked all the question blah blah blah and discussed my symptoms.
For some context, during this time, I was mountain biking weekly, and jogging daily, but I was also drinking daily. Which I specifically told the doctor, and made the doctor aware that I have been around the block meaning, I have visited other psychologist but their theapy didn’t help
Anws, towards the end of the session, usually the doctor would give you tips on how to deal with your symptoms. i.e relaxation techniques for MDD.
But this moron of a doctor told me to get more into nature, like one week once, and I was what you mean get into nature, she said go for a walk at one of the nature parks, as greenery and nature will help you calm down. And I was like I mountain bike, I get mud and grass in my underwear every week, how nature do you want me to get, unless I go back to tekong and re do field camp. I didn’t see what more nature I can get.
And then after the session, she told the reception to book me for 2 hours for the next session when the usual is 1 hour and when I asked why, I was told “ oh you can afford it what”
As for a psychiatrist, I went to one of the top private hospitals in Singapore for a psychiatrist.
When I entered the doctor’s office, the office was filled with chakras and those spiritual painting which was already a red flag, anyways, after spending less than 5 mins telling the doctor of what I am facing, this dude told me this “ ya ya, I can see it thru you when you entered my office”
I had my fair share experience with bomohs, but the last place I’d expect to see one was at a top private hospital in Singapore. Anws the meds he gave made me really really bad, it made me sooo much more worst, felt like puking all the time, started hallucinating, maybe he was a bomoh after all, well it went on for a year.
And then I decided to give IMH a shot. I am way much better now thanks to the staff and doctors there, and didn’t make hole in my wallet.
I have tried to quit alcohol a few times, but I’d go back to square one. Today is my 2nd day in my idk how many’th attempt to quit.
In all honesty, I don’t wanan totally quit alcohol. For an example, I like to have a couple of beers after my weekly mountain biking ride. Which is around 35KM.
The muddier and dirtier I am, the more shoik was it to have some beers sitting on some random floor, after my ride, I’d buy some beers, go behind some multi story carpark and drink a few beers. No matter what time, like if I returned by 10am, I’d still drink. And usually when people see me all muddy, bike caked with mud and me drinking, they’d usually smile or laugh. I don’t think I’d have that same reception without the mud. Funny.
I like to have a few cold beers after work, not everyday, but when I fell like it. Like maybe, Fridays, sit alone, scroll reddit, watch some random videos on youtube.
I recall recently, I was drinking at some park around 11pm and behind me sat some lady using her phone, a couple of minutes later a group showed up with a bag of drinks, I initially thought it was beers.
But no, it was canned drinks and packet drinks, and they all just sat there drinking and talking.
And I wondered, how do people to that.
And then I recalled, when I was in NS or before NS(after legal age, before the 1030PM law) me and my friends would sit under the block at the middle of the night, and drink monster, yes monster energy. And if I wasn’t with my friends, I be at home, drinking monster, or a big tumblr of black coffee making trance music as I wanted to be the next Armin Van Burren on a run down 6GB ram laptop with a broken keyboard ( I had to use on screen keyboard) and some shitty creative tech speaker and a torrented copy of FL studio and ableton on a half broken table with a plastic chair, while I tried my best to stay awake and make music
And now it’s the total opposite. I have huge 3 monitor setup, with top notch Mackie studio monitors, enough money to buy FL studios full suite. And a korg midi keyboard and a set of pionner CDJ sitting in my cupboard with clothes pilled on it. A big teak wood table with secret lab XL chair. And have no interest in making or listening to music. I sometimes wanna, I’d go to FL studio’s website, with my card out, thinking to buy, but then my shitty mental health comes killing that urge.
To think of it, I don’t have interest in anything. I started watching Modern family recently and got bored after 3rd season, now even though I am still watching it, I am just using it as background noise.

And do you realize alcohol is everywhere in Singapore. When you enter 7/11, the first few things you'd notice is a stack of carton of anchor beer. Yet the perception of alcohol is Singapore is not great.
It is not like in the west, where having a couple of beers after work a day is normal. When i tell my friends that i drink a few cans of beer everyday, to them its normal, it not considered alcoholic.
And the price of beers in singapore is expensive, The definition of an alcoholic is subjective though.
The funny thing about alcohol is, i am certain someone is gonan think i am talking out of my rear when i say this. But alcohol is actually helpful for you especially if you have mental health issues, i am talking about a few beers a day, i think that is honestly fine. As alcohol calms you down. But in the long run, it becomes a depressant. Like if you have ADHD, beers really calms you down.
But anchor strong/anchor,tiger or any cheap beers tend to give you hair loss.
I am not advocating people drinking.
I honestly wont be alive if i didnt get too tipsy to do anything.
But I just wanna have a couple of beers right now. But I wont!
Are there any other alchohlics around?

2019.04.09 09:22 KensukeTanabe Addressing the arguments that a Superman game can't works.

I don't know if this is the right sub for this but please lend me your ears. I'm an up and coming game dev who dreams of creating a Video Game based on the greatest superhero ever "Aquaman", if you disagree then what is wrong with you? Many have not seen My posts but I am working very hard to get my degree in order to someday pursue this goal, but I am great-full that Aquaman has had a resurgence in popularity for this endevour to at least be possible. Now with Acclaim success of Spider-Man PS4 and the previous success of the Batman: Arkham series, not to mention the popularity of the MCU, with the Avengers soon to get there space in AAA gaming (If the game ever comes out), Superheroes are becoming big in gaming now, and I wanted to use this as an opportunity to address a character that was in much debate with rumors and speculations in 2018, 'Superman'. Despite being Iconic, Superman has always been a controversial character in Geek Culture (especially the internet) where you have the One side that loves everything about him and what he stands for, and the other side that hates him and everything he represents or the middle minority but it is all matter of opinions at the end of the day and I would like to give mine if that is okay. This is a sort of counter argument to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ25qaJ7tJA,, and please be free too give your opinions. I like to thank u/ChadBenjamin for providing me with his words.
Issue #1 - "Flying is really difficult to pull off in a video game."
Now I've never made a video game in my life, and I am sure that this would be a pain in the ass to pull off. But it is far from impossible. There are Superman games on the PS2 and Xbox 360 that managed to give us high speed flight, plus despite how underwhelming it was, Anthem had some really fun flying mechanics that showed that it can work in this modern day of gaming, so think of what can be done with the technology that we have in the future. I definitely think that a detected studio can do it.
Issue #2 - "Superman is too powerful for a video game. Who is going to be able to fight him?"
His villains should obviously be able to fight him. Superman has a large and varied rogues gallery. He can have boss fights against:
• Lex Luthor
• Brainiac
• Darkseid
• Doomsday
• Imperiex
• General Zod
• Cyborg Superman
• Eradicator
• Manchester Black
• Bizarro
• Mongul
• Metallo
• Parasite
• Toyman
• Prankster
• Silver Banshee
• Livewire
• Maxima
• H.I.V.E. Queen
• Atomic Skull
• Kryptonite Man
• Titano
• Ultra-Humanite
• Gog
• Conduit
• Wraith
• H'El
• Ulysses
• Blanque
• Rogol Zaar
There are enough villains here to give us 4 games, and not all of them need to be featured in the main story. Some of them can be used in side missions, like they did with the Batman games. Not only that but, the interesting thing about comic book characters is you can change them a bit in order to fit your narrative. If you don't want an overpowered Superman, just don't make him overpowered. It's that simple. You don't need kryptonite or red sun or all that explaination, just make an under powered superman if you want.
Issue #3 - "You can't just have boss fights for the entire game, you need some fodder enemies for Superman to fight and puzzles to solve"
Thankfully, we don't need to resort to regular thugs armed with guns that fire Kryptonite bullets. Because Superman does fight a lot of fodder enemies in the comics such as Intergang, Brainiac drones, Parademons, Team Luthor, Toyman's giant robots, Warworld's gladiators, Underworlders, demons from Hell, creatures from the Phantom Zone & various alien races that try to invade Earth. As for puzzle, you can utilize his powers (Particularly his super strength) for interesting puzzle solving but the puzzles in question is up to the designer.
Issue #4 - "Superman has so many powers, how are we going to be able to use all of them?"
Batman had Detective Mode, Superman can have X-Ray Vision. Batman had a gadget wheel that contained different gadgets like Batarangs, the Batclaw, Explosive Gel & the Cryptographic Sequencer. Superman can have a powers wheel that contains Super Hearing, Super Olfaction, Telescopic Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Heat Vision, Super Breath & Freeze Breath.
Issue #5 - "Superman has less variety than Batman and Spider-Man."
Batman and Spider-Man can be used for stealth missions, Superman can be used for outer space missions. Batman can do detective work, Spider-Man can do Science work, Superman can do investigative journalism. Batman can wreck shit with the Batmobile, Superman can wreck shit with his body.
You were able to play as Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman & Red Hood in the Batman games. You can play as Mary Jane and Miles Morales in Spider-Man. You should be able to play as Supergirl, Superboy, Steel & Krypto in Superman games.
Scarecrow was used to make trippy & spooky missions in Batman. So was Scorpion in Spider-Man. Mr. Mxyzptlk can be used to make trippy & fun missions in Superman. There is just as much variety in Superman, it's just different. Superman can even do things that Batman can't, like deal with natural disasters.
Issue #6 - "Batman has a dark & gothic tone, while Superman is bland."
Superman, like all other heroes, does have a tone. It's supposed to be warm & inspiring but more than that. While Batman can either be a Campy action hero or a Dark Gothic creature of the Night , or Spider-Man can be a Urban Street action hero or a Multi-Dimensional Adventurer, Superman can often be Old-timely golden age hero or Retro-Futuristic protector of the Universe. There are some short stories like "Help", "Glasses" & "Dear Superman..." that capture the essence of the character.
Issue #7 - "It's easy to tell a good story with Batman and Spider-Man, but Superman is too hard to write for."
While this argument does have credit to it, due to his iconic status making it hard for writers to take the character to a different setting, without backlash, You just need a good writer. Paul Dini was brought on to write Batman: Arkham Asylum & Batman: Arkham City. Dini is known for writing Batman: The Animated Series, but he also wrote Superman: The Animated Series. And if he is not available, then maybe they can get someone else who knows how to write good Superman stories or at least a writer that sees why people like the character an his mythos. Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Dan Jurgens & Peter J. Tomasi are all good choices.
And the main reason I made this is to say that, we shouldn't be quick to say something will fail or some ideas don't work just because we have a small, basic understanding of those ideas and this goes for Game devs and writers as well. Anything is possible if you put passion and have a love and understanding of what you want to make. While the AAA gaming space isn't really a place for passion products since games are made only to get a return investments, the projects that are made with passion do end up getting successful and if not passion at least an understanding and admiration of what your working on, which is why I am perusing the Aquaman project and I hope gets to fruition some day.

2019.03.23 00:00 Patsboy101 I feel I have to say this about the Superman Titles by Brian Michael Bendis

I’m done just hating it because it gets tiring to be disappointed every month, but I have to say this to you guys.
The more I thought about it, the more I saw the reason why I don’t particularly like how Bendis is handling Superman because he’s writing it like a post-Infinite Crisis story you’d see before Final Crisis. It really feels Bendis just wanted to write Lois and Clark, married and without Jon during that era of comic storytelling. Just hear it out, “Lois goes with Jor-El on a space adventure to get the story of a lifetime”. It would work better if Jon wasn’t involved in the equation.
The feel of the comic is way different than what was established in the Rebirth Super titles by Tomasi and Jurgens. I guess the sudden change shocked me and I naturally was very irritated as a reaction to a change of environment basically. Interesting how anger can come out like this. First when the actual change in status quo came, I was initially very angry because it felt like a total middle finger to everything I loved about Superman prior to Bendis. But as anger builds up, being disappointed month after month after month; it keeps building and building that it gets so exhausting to maintain that state of irritation, that you realize you need to get that irritant off your mind and read and talk books you actually enjoy.
I can’t keep reading and causing myself to waste emotional energy on these comics that can be used elsewhere for things I actually enjoy. I’m done with it like I was done with Titans after their terrible breakup that was forced by the Justice League. I have better things to do like read all three books out currently of Peter David’s Young Justice (Book One is making me laugh my ass off), or to finish Jamie Delano’s Hellblazer and to see the start of Garth Ennis’ Hellblazer (starting to read Vol. 4: The Family Man with stories by Grant Morrison who’s crazy writing I love and Neil Gaiman who I’ve heard is amazing at writing magic). This is the problem with giving a very divisive writer like Bendis the two titles of Superman. If don’t like his style on Superman, you won’t find haven in Action Comics. Maybe one day I’ll come back to read the Superman titles, but that day is not today.
Jeez, this is like some weird obituary for my feelings for the Superman comics currently. It’s easy to forget that comics are cyclical when you are so busy being angry in the moment. If I don’t like how Bendis made Jon seventeen or how out-of-character Lois is being written, then maybe there’ll be a future writer that will make Jon ten again and writes a great Lois.
Even if I don’t grab to Bendis’ style of writing or how he’s handling of the Superman mythos, the guy still knows comics. I was listening to him talk at the Julius Schwartz Lecture at MIT. It’s funny how he talks about his evolution as a writer. From how he sees Ultimate Pete as how he was when he seriously started writing comings having the classical nervousness of Parker when it comes to stepping into comics to Miles when he started raising his family to finally Superman. Bendis actually mentions that he started act more responsibly and started to help people more often because he’s writing Big Blue and that’s how Supes would act. Although I’ve hated what he’s done to Supes, I’m glad Superman has a big influence on Bendis. But to hear him say if you don’t like his direction for a book, then why are you reading it. Although he was speaking about comic character fandom and comparing them to Yankees fans how they cheer you on when you soar and they boo you when you’re doing terribly, that prior line in particular struck a certain cord in me. Why was I wasting energy on a book that I didn’t enjoy? Sure, I wanted to stay informed on what Bendis is doing to the Superman mythos, but is it really worth it if each month, I feel I want to tear my hair out in absolute rage over what Bendis is doing to Superman.
This is why I find it really weird that many comic book channels buy the Bendis Superman books just to rip the issues into shreds. If you don’t like the book, stop buying it and use that cash to buy something you do enjoy. This is the best way to send a message to DC. DC is a company first and foremost, and sales are what ultimately dictate their direction as a company. Even if Bendis signed an iron-clad contract to DC for writing Superman, sales will still determine if he’s kept on the books or not.
Pardon me for this getting out of hand. I find that even the simplest of emotions can convey so much more about other subjects than just the singular topic you first started to talk about when you write things out with your true emotions showing in the writing. Hate and happiness, the usual suspects. Perhaps this how comic writers actually write out stories. They invest themselves so emotionally into the writing that you see the inherent quality even if means a few kinks could be worked out.
I remember one YouTube video by Bryan Edward Hill, and he talks about the fear many novice writers have. Fear I found can really dominate your other emotions. A fear of being ridiculed because you didn’t blow the doors off their hinges. But Hill mentions that fear you have writing out the pages can be written into a character. Pouring your emotions into a character is one of the things storytelling does. There’s that inherent primal emotion that needs to be present to get invested in the story.
I enjoyed the smaller stories with Tomasi writing because of the family dynamic that was present. I want to know who the character is outside the big threats that the hero must battle to keep the world safe. Tomasi was really highlighting the fatherly nature that Superman has by developing the family man aspect of him. The emotions family can evoke I found are really powerful. I don’t feel as attached to Superman saving the world if the family isn’t there. It’s more than Superman’s job to save the world if his family is present and in the danger of being on the line. It gives Clark that more reason to be invested in saving the world if his family is involved. I’m thinking of a Superman thought bubble along the lines of “For my family, for the world, for everyone!”. It adds a lot of emotional vulnerability to a man which bullets bounce off his skin. Why should I care for the big stakes when there are constant big stakes? Big stakes aren’t big stakes when there are no intermissions between them, they become just the regular stakes. Superman’s family gets ripped away and how do they reunite. That sounds like a good idea on paper. But why should I care when that’s the first thing that happens in the run? It comes off as a kind of screw you to what came previously.
Regarding the villain, Rogol Zaar, I find it interesting that Bendis is so proud of his creation, yet he hasn’t given an explanation on why Zaar hates Kryptonians, especially Superman so much. Apparently, you have to read Supergirl for that. I’m not hating on Supergirl or Marc Andryeko and I can’t speak on its quality because I haven’t been reading the book, but I’m really not personally interested in reading Kara. I’m all for cloak and dagger sort of stuff, but you need to reveal at least bits of the truth at some point. Bendis had a 6-issue Man of Steel mini-series and his Superman run to flesh out Rogol Zaar, but he has failed to do so yet.
To make a good villain, you need to show their motivation and how it clashes with the hero’s motivation. A great example is Hunter Zolomon as Wally’s Reverse Flash. Zolomon thinks he’s making Wally a better hero by making him suffer tragedy. It is beyond fucked up to think this way. We had time to see who Zolomon was prior to his transformation to being Zoom. Wally and Zolomon were good friends and they worked together to stop villains, but after Grodd broke Hunter’s back, they grew apart because Hunter wanted Wally to time-travel to prevent Hunter from being paralyzed. Wally refused because of the possibility of damaging the space-time continuum and doing so could result in a Flashpoint scenario. This made Zolomon bitter, and he became so desperate to change the course of his fate, that he attempted to use the Cosmic Treadmill which was only meant for speedsters to use so they could travel through the time stream. Hunter attempted using it, but it blew up in his face and give him time manipulation powers, and he saw to make Flash a better hero by making him suffer the ultimate tragedy, namely causing Linda Park to have a miscarriage. This later reversed at the end of Geoff Johns Flash run and that’s how Jai West and Iris West II came into the picture, but the initial devastation in how it originally played out before that made Wally so depressed that he got the Spectre who was Hal Jordan at the time to erase the memory that Wally West and the Flash were the same person from everyone’s mind including Wally himself until his memories were triggered and he remembered being the Flash. But the shock Linda had remembering Wally again was too great that she left Wally for a time to get herself back together. This all occurred because of Hunter’s actions and it caused the West couple great harm. The greater the villain, the greater the hero.
It was very detailed exploration of who Zolomon is and what he wants to do to Wally, but Zaar hasn’t gotten that yet. I got sick of only hearing Zaar say “Boy, I hate them Kryptonians, so I destroyed their planet”. We naturally want to know why he hates Kryptonians so badly, but we haven’t gotten it, and I’ve grown tired waiting for the explanation for Zaar’s hatred for Kryptonians.
I’m trying not to go into the “I hate Bendis” line of thought because it doesn’t add anything to the conversation. It’s just saying the same rhetoric over and over again gets tiring and I don't want to be tired all the time. It's funny how cathartic it was for me to write this out. I bid a good day to you all

2019.03.09 01:58 KensukeTanabe Addressing the arguments that a Superman game can't works.

Issue #1 - "Flying is really difficult to pull off in a video game."
Now I've never made a video game in my life, and I am sure that this would be a pain in the ass to pull off. But it is far from impossible. There are Superman games on the PS2 and Xbox 360 that managed to give us high speed flight, plus despite how underwhelming it was, Anthem had some really fun flying mechanics that showed it can work in this modern day of gaming, so think of what can be done with the technology that we have now.
Superman does have a tone. It's supposed to be warm & inspiring.
And if he is not available, then maybe they can get someone else who knows how to write good Superman stories or at least a writer that sees why people like the character an mythos. Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Dan Jurgens & Peter J. Tomasi are all good choices.

2018.11.20 06:02 CateArmy69 Unsure if I should post this here

Hi there, I'm a medical student in a university currently in Final year. As long as I remember, this feeling of negativity or depression have been looming around me since I'm high school. Since I'm socially awkward during that time, I don't have a lot of friends, so I often felt like I'm worthless and shouldn't exist. Feeling of suicide had became a secondary nature for me during that time. But I don't have any plans, it just that the feeling is there deep inside my heart, telling me to die. Sometimes I cry alone in a dark room, I'll get very sensitive and irritable when my friend joke around with me even though normally I'll just play along with it. But ultimately it doesn't stop me to score in SPM and subsequently receiving scholarship to study medic.

Fast forward to end of 1st Year Medic School, my mother died of Cancer after struggling with it for 6 year. During the last days of her life, I watched her withering away, skin tethering to her skeleton lifeless body, sometimes she will have bubbles coming out of her mouth. She'll also have diet restriction (since my family went to see bomoh as last resort and she's allowed only to eat certain food). I felt so helpless and so scared. Her cancer has progressed to stage 4 lung cancer that metastasize to her brain, causing her to forget me and my family. It was the worst phase of my life. Finally she died peacefully in her sleep, during the night after she called me but I was busy doing laundry so I didn't answer, worst mistake of my life. She died on Friday morning, and straight away after that the next week Monday I continued school like nothing happened. There's no grieving, I acted like everything was alright so that everyone would not be worry.

But this event fucked me up so bad, I would have bad days that happened more than it should where I would cry suddenly for no reason. I'll get irritable so angry I would punch a wall. I'll be cynical towards the world, hating the world for giving me illness (I have sinusitis and tonsilitis). I stopped praying. I would have this feeling of thought block like I'm on autopilot in life and be so tired even after a good night sleep (I'm aware it might be sleep apnea too). Suicidal thoughts keep occurring, but I'm scared of killing myself because its a sin. I just wanna watch youtube videos all day and lie in bed. I have feeling of guilt towards my mother and refused to visit her grave until now.

Luckily, I have an insight since I already been through psychiatry posting and aware of symptoms of depression. My grades is okay and I never failed any paper since I like medicine so its not like studying medicine is causing me a lot of stress. But until now I have trouble getting all these negative feeling out of my head and I'm afraid one day I'll really kill myself.

Lately I'm confided to my best friend and he suggest me getting help. But I'm so afraid that seeing a doctor will ruin my chance of being a doctor one day, destroying all my hard work in the past 5 years. I have heard of a case where a houseman was relieved from his duty because he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his work and it made me afraid to get help. Is it necessary to reveal my medical history to the hospital I'm doing housemanship in the future?

Sorry for the long post, I really needed to get this out. I have a storage of voice recordings of my mom and me call history before she died 4 years ago and listened to it recently. I remember how motherly her voice is and how we use to joke around. I remembered now how she used to told me that she'll pray for my success as a doctor and how she wanted me to take care of my brother and sister. I fought with her a lot but she's my best friend, someone I'll confide with when I'm sad. I know she wouldn't want to see me in a distraught state like this.

Can someone tell me what to do? Thank you very much. Also I not financially independent so I prefer seeking a cheaper options

TLDR; My mother died and left me feeling distraught and depressed for the past 4 years. Scared to seek advice because afraid that it will affect my job prospect in the future. Need help how to progress after this

2018.08.17 20:15 shawnwork 8 year old kids ‘main rogol’ : disturbing, you be the judge if we need to reinforce sex education. From fb post. Malay language

...
Abang: "Dia tarik abang pergi tandas belakang. Tandas perempuan kat belakang. Dia ajak abang pergi main rogol-rogol."
Mama: "Main rogol-rogol? Rogol yang macam mana?"
Abang: "Dia tarik abang! Dia kata jom la wey. Dia kata nak pergi kencing. Tapi abang kata abang nak basuh muka je. Dia kata jom la jom la."
Mama: "Pastu?"
Abang: "Pastu abang marah la dia. Abang kata, nak bagitau mak, abang kata macam tu."
Mama: "Siapa lagi yang buat macam tu? Dia ada buat kat siapa lagi?"
Abang: "Dia buat kat abang je la.Tapi ada kawan abang nama A, dia ajak orang lain main rogol-rogol.
Ada budak lelaki ni dia suruh baring. Darjah dua juga. Dia rogol kawan abang. Dua-dua ni satu kelas dengan abang."
Mama: "Esok mama jumpa cikgu awak."
Abang: "Tak payah!!! Abang dah bagitau cikgu, cikgu diam je! Tak pukul pun dia.
Abang dah bagitau Cikgu E,... macam-macam cikgulah! Ustaz M, dah bagitau Cikgu N Sains, lepas tu bagitau Cikgu F. Cikgu F lempang dia kuat2 haritu!
Mama tolong pergi sekolah jumpa budak tu."
Mama: "Esok mama pergi jumpa budak tu."
........................
Nah tuan puan.
Umur 8 tahun dah mula cuba lakukan hubungan kelamin melalui apa yang mereka lihat melalui internet. Manalah mereka tahu itu salah kalau kita sendiri malu nak mengajar.
....
Beginilah.
Tengok kanan tengok kiri tengok kanan lagi. Tetapi apabila ianya melibatkan maruah, masa depan dan keselamatan mereka, ancaman jenayah seksual tu dipandang ringan sahaja.
"Nanti dah besar diorg tahu sendiri."
Mudahnya menjaga anak. Macam campak benih pokok. Pandai-pandailah nak hidup.
.....

2017.04.06 13:38 OookOok We need a malay word for statutory rape

That debate video went round and round and round, the discussion here went round and round and round because the malay word used in place of rape is 'rogol'. Rogol is exclusively violent rape. Statutory rape is just 'hubungan seksual'/sexual relationship without any difference between normal, two adults having sexual relationship or an adult and a minor.
I'm just realising that Shahbudin is basically going ??? of course rogol (violent rape) should be punished and sidestepping the statutory rape part because -
Is it not registering for him that there is a statutory rape part? Because what is it in malay? It's not rogol. It's just, there's no term for it. How do you punish something that isn't even defined?
Or does he understand, but due to the ambiguities the malay language have around the situation, he and his like-minded politicians are going to continually use that ambiguity to continually push for an escape route for statutory rape?
edit: I've been going over the transcripts, and it's been made very clear that he does not consider consensual sex between an adult and a minor a crime, and would happily approve such marriages if there is any chances of a statutory rape charge. But one of his defense is there is no 'rogol'. It's consensual and so is not a crime in his opinion.
Thoughts?
Already in use:

2016.11.21 04:35 jwrx Kenapa benci orang cina? - FB post by Mujahidin Zulkiffli

Saw the video of Ampangan Malay Uncle shouting at the two Chinese guys holding Bersih placards. (Video links in my comment below) His hatred wasn't for Bersih as he didn't have issues with the Malays there wearing Bersih shirts. His issue was purely racial. Hatred for Chinese. He shouted Cina Babi so many times. He told them, Cina not allowed in Ampangan. Ampangan Melayu punya. Called them DAP. Eh, Ampangan UMNO won by 89 votes only lah.. been few years the 89 people would have regretted voting UMNO already. Inilah contoh Melayu alpa or lepa.
Dapat duit suka hati, lepas tu bila time nak bayar, banyak alasan. Salahkan Cina pulak sebab bunga interest tinggi. Masa kau nak berhutang kau tak fikir pasal bunga. Masa nak bayar kau bukak cerita bunga tinggi, kau salahkan Cina jugak. Masa kau terdesak kau cari dia. Lepas tu kau salahkan dia sebab menyebabkan kau miskin bayar interest. Yang kau berhutang apa pasal?
Bila kau nak pakai duit, kau jual kau pajak tanah kat Cina. Lepas tu bila kau dah tak ada tanah, kau maki Cina sebab dia ambil tanah kau. Eh yang kau pajak apa pasal? Sebab tak ada duit? Sebab kesempitan? Oh masa kau kesempitan kau cari Cina, pajak tanah. Bila dia lelong emas kau sebab kau tak bayar, kau maki dia cutthroat Cina Babi. Eh sekarang kau pajak di Ar-Rahnu bila dia lelong kenapa kau tak maki dia Ar-Rahnu Babi?
Masa kau miskin, kau beli barang runcit kat kedai Cina masuk buku Tiga Lima. Kau beli secara hutang. Cina tu percaya kat kau, dia bagi kau hutang. Lepas tu Cina tu jugak yang kau panggil Cina babi. Kau tu Melayu Babi yang sebenarnya.
Some Malays talk about ketirisan projek Bumiputera. Melayu dapat kontrak tapi sub-con kepada Cina. Lepas tu cakap Cina dapat kontrak Melayu. Eh, dah kau yang bagi pada Cina, kau nak bising pasal apa? Kalau Cina tak buat nanti projek kau tergendalai, kau kena saman. Tak bersyukur dia tolong kau dapat duit 'atas angin' kau maki dia, tuduh dia curi projek pulak? Apasal kau tak sub-con kat company Melayu? Ya sebab company Melayu banyak yang hampeh.. tahu nak makan duit atas angin saja, kerja tak nak buat. Outsource katanya. Cina turun Bersih kau ugut nak pancung. Eh yang kau ikut perangai zaman Jepun pancung Cina kenapa? Dulu Jepun tu jugak yang rogol nenek-nenek kau. Jepun tu jugak yang perhambakan datuk moyang kau. Lepas tu bila Cina lawan Jepun kau panggil dia komunis. Padahal dia lawan musuh kau.
Kau maki British penjajah bukan main lagi, tapi bila Cina lawan British untuk bebaskan penjajahan kau sokong British pulak?? Benci betul dengan Cina kenapa? Takut dia rampas Tanah Melayu? Sultan Melaka dulu bila takut kena serang dengan Siam, dia pergi kahwin dengan Puteri Hang Li Po. Bukan Puteri betul pun tapi sebab Siam takut dengan China, Melaka selamat. Pandai betul Sultan tu. Eh eh.. Hang Li Po tu Cina Babi kan?
Sekarang PM kau pun dah pandai.. ikut contoh Sultan Melaka. PM bila dah terdesak, orang Cina jugak yang dia pergi mintak tolong. Dapat berbillion-billion... hutang. Bila nak duit kau cari Cina. Tapi kau maki dia Cina Babi. Suruh dia balik Tongsan.
Melayu macam ni lah yang memalukan bangsa. Ini nama dia Melayu bangang. Tak kenang budi tu satu hal, yang kau benci orang yang tolong kau waktu kau susah kenapa? Dasar tak kenang dek untung. Kacang lupakan kulit.
