2023.08.11 16:38 J-Bradley1 "Let's Talk About 'FIGHT CLUB'" – Article from 'Maxim Magazine'

LET'S TALK ABOUT 'FIGHT CLUB'
Fifteen years ago, Director David Fincher, author Chuck Palahniuk, and actors Brad Pitt and Edward Norton teamed up to make one of the most revolutionary and uncompromising films in history. It was a box office disaster...and one of the most influential movies Hollywood ever produced. This is the Behind-The-Scenes story. (And yes, we know we're breaking Rule One and Two.)
(By Bilge Ebiri)
For most of 1999, Movie fans salivated over the prospect of David Fincher directing a film version of Chuck Palahniuk's cult novel 'FIGHT CLUB', with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt starring as two guys who start an anarchistic, underground network where mean beat each other to a pulp, then hug it out. But when the thing came out, it tanked. Dark but often laugh-out-loud funny, it featured a finale in which the hero shoots himself in the head, then watches his city collapse around him. What the Hell?
That confusion didn't last long. In reality, there was no first rule of 'FIGHT CLUB', so everyone talked about it, and it was recognized as one of the most iconic movies of the decade. It may, in fact, be the film for which Fincher, Pitt, and Norton will be best remembered. Why does it still feel vital, 15 years after its release? Here are 12 reasons.
BRINGING MACHO BACK
After suffering serious defeats in the 1960s and '70s (hello, James Taylor!), macho made a comeback in the Reagan era but went limp again during the prosperous Clinton years. The Narrator (Norton) exemplifies the sensitive male of the 1990s: an IKEA-shopping, neutered office drone. Tyler Durden (Pitt) is the male id made real, a Paleolithic monster who creates an outlet for the repressed aggression of cubicle workers.
TYLER DURDEN...
Sure, he's a psychotic fascist—but, hey, no one's perfect. Tyler's antimaterialistic tirades—"The things you own end up owning you" and "Fuck Martha Stewart. Martha's polishing the brass on the Titanic"—help establish the middle-class angst and frustration that prove to be fertile ground for the growth of the fight club. And Tyler is a Bohemian icon: His outfits look like the coolest, grimiest thrift store in the world exploded in his closet. All this makes him an enviable paragon of I-don't-give-a-Damn attitude: "I am free in all the ways that you are not," he proclaims. Once the Narrator realizes that he is Tyler, 'FIGHT CLUB' becomes a reimagining of Dostoevsky's 'THE DOUBLE', in which a government clerk goes mad and begins to imagine a doppelgänger who is charming and confident—all the things he's not.
...AND THAT BODY
After the muscle-bound 1980s and '90s, when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were idolized for their cartoonlike, pumped-up physiques, Brad Pitt's lean, cut frame signaled a change from He-Man to P90X. Pitt's chiseled but wiry look has since become the cinema ideal. Hollywood's personal trainers routinely cite Tyler Durden's physique as an inspiration. And losing body mass index to look like Pitt is easier to achieve than the arduous weight lifting required to be a hulking hunk.
A PHILOSOPHY THAT TURNS ON ITSELF
It's easy to see the appeal of Tyler's philosophy: He advocates a world in which you don't have to listen to other people or their rules. But the film goes on to condemn that philosophy, showing how anything with this sort of libertarian lure can gradually become oppressive. Although Tyler turns out to be imaginary, his ideas take on a life of their own as his followers go from seeking their freedom to parroting everything he says; they even don black shirts, à la Mussolini's Fascists, and can't seem to grasp the value of human life. The film's slogan could easily be: "If you believe it, we're against it."
A STYLE THAT TURNS ON ITSELF
'FIGHT CLUB's shiny stylization was deemed hypocritical by many critics: "The film is a hard sell about a no-sell," said 'NEW YORK Magazine's Peter Rainer; it's a "thrill ride masquerading as philosophy," declared Roger Ebert. They missed the point. The film is very much about the slick, viral appeal of its ideas. It's filled with little meta touches: wall-to-wall product placement that seems to mock the film's antimaterialist message, and a speedy, music-video style that runs counter to the condemnation of commercialism. (Prior to 'FIGHT CLUB' Fincher was an accomplished video director.) It's as though the director is admitting that, for all Tyler's hatred of capitalism, the movie is a packaged product served up by a Hollywood studio—one owned by Rupert Murdoch.
THE GIRL
Screenwriter Jim Uhls has reportedly described 'FIGHT CLUB' as a romantic comedy, which may explain why Marla Singer (played by Helena Bonham Carter) is the film's beating heart. Though she initially seems as disaffected as the Narrator—they meet as they're faking their way into a cancer support group—she eventually becomes one of the film's few tenuous connections of real life. Marla is the only main character who expresses bewilderment at Norton's schizophrenic behavior. And what a coup to cast the profoundly intelligent Bonham Carter—then known primarily for genteel, Merchant Ivory period pieces like 'A ROOM WITH A VIEW' and 'HOWARDS END'—as a suicidal, disaffected Goth. All of her Sex scenes are with Pitt, not Norton. She wants attention and caring from the good boy, who doesn't give it to her; and she keeps returning for wild, violent, evocatively surreal Sex with the bad boy. She's literally getting off on the Narrator's illness.
OFFICE CULTURE
Norton's antiseptic corporate job—he's a recall coordinator for a car company—fuels his need to find something brutal and real; 1999 was a pivotal year for movies about the quiet desperation of a modern desk job. 'FIGHT CLUB', alongside 'OFFICE SPACE' and 'THE MATRIX', showed the corporate world as a malady that had to be cured, preferably through violent means.
"BOB, BOB HAD BITCH TITS."
In contrast to Pitt's rippling abs, there's in indelible image of our mousy Narrator pressed up against the fearsomely large, disturbingly sweaty bosom of a crying Bob (Meat Loaf) at a support group for men with testicular cancer. This is how 'FIGHT CLUB' makes its points so nauseatingly vivid, displaying a world where masculinity has been pushed to the margins. In reality, the contrast between the two actors wasn't so stark. The hefty Meat Loaf had actually -lost- a ton of weight and had to wear a fat suit. One with Boobs.
REAL-LIFE RESONNANCES
Forget the influence of Fincher's compositional flair; the movie inspired the creation of real-life fight clubs, via Craigslist and social media. The East Bay Rats biker club staged one in Oakland. A "gentlemen's fight club" involving Silicon Valley techies throttling each other popped up in Menlo Park, California. A Texas teen suffered a brain hemorrhage from a fight club, leading to arrests. Last year, 'VICE' reported on a Russian club, "the Ronin Family," which transforms "educated urbanites into real men by physically and psychologically torturing them."
THE SOUND DESIGN
'FIGHT CLUB' earned just one Oscar nomination; for Ren Klyce and Richard Hymn's sound design.Their work peaks in the fight scenes, in which the aural pyrotechnics create an extra layer of meaning and texture. When Tyler and the Narrator initially come to blows, their punches are mushy and pathetic. As the film proceeds, the sound of the fighting attains a sickening grandeur. To get the desired effects, Klyce and his team experimented with smashing carcasses with walnuts in them, as well as smacking giant pieces of meat with pigs' feet. Typically, the movie tells you that it's playing tricks with the audio: "After fighting, everything else in your life had the volume turned down," the Narrator says, as his boss strains to make himself heard above the drone of the soundtrack. For all the film's visual wonders, it was also revolutionary in exploring the psychology of sound, an approach Fincher would pursue in films ranging from 'THE SOCIAL NETWORK' to 'GONE GIRL'.
THE MUSIC
Fincher was adamant that the music be composed by someone who'd never scored a film before, and he found that in the Dust Brothers, the L.A. duo who produced seminal albums by the Beastie Boys and Beck, and whose techno-infused soundtrack heightens the gleefully grim, dystopic atmosphere. The most notable music cue comes in the finale, as the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" erupts right as the landmarks of corporate America are blown to bits.
THAT EXPLOSIVE ENDING
The ending of 'FIGHT CLUB', which depicted the violent destruction of corporateculture, was controversial at the time. It took on an added resonance two years later, after 9/11 made the image of collapsing office buildings a very real, very tragic, not-at-all-cool thing. Tyler attributes the club's disaffectedness to the lack of a modern crisis: "We have no Great War, no Great Depression," he laments. "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pised off." Within a few years, the country -was- at war and on the cusp of another Depression. Yet those events haven't provided any relief. We live in a world in which we're more alienated from consequence than the one Tyler lived in.

I came across a stock I would like to share called BODY (known as Beach Body). They just completed a 3 way merger between Beach body,Forest Road and MYX fitness about 2 weeks ago.
A little info on this stock. The 3 way merger included Forest Road, MYX fitness which is a cycle bike company and Beach Body that is a connected fitness company who has over 20 years of growth under their belt. Beach body acquired Openfit in December of 2020 (Started by Lebron James and Arnold Schwarzenegger). This acquisition gave Lebron and Arnold a stake in the new BODY company. They are both going to be making their own content in the future for this company. Beach Body company is known for its exercises Insanity and P90X which helped countless people lose weight and change their lives for the better(Sean T is also a super trainer and he has been massive in fitness for as long as i can remember).
The (Forest Road Acquisitions) is phenomenal. Here is a list of a few of the people involved in the deal. You will probably recognize Shaq and MLK the 3rd are apart of this company which I think is huge. IMO anything Shaq joins always seems to make waves. (The ring company and Papa Johns Pizza just to name a few).
The Forest Road Acquisition Corp. team includes three former Disney senior executives — Tom Staggs, director and Chairperson of the Strategic Advisory Committee, Kevin Mayer, strategic advisor, and Salil Mehta, Chief Financial Officer — and is strengthened by the strategic connectivity and deal-making expertise of directors, officers, and strategic advisors like Shaquille O'Neal, Peter Schlessel, Keith Horn, Mark Burg, Sheila Stamps, Teresa Miles Walsh, and Martin Luther King III.
On top of this All-Star cast of people is the short interest. Yesterday I saw that it was over 40%! Today the stock hit its 52 week low due to the shorting that has been happening. This is the current Short interest (around %38.09).
The BODY company is now flush with cash around $420,000,000 coming from the closing of the merger. They are planning to do an advertising campaign in the coming weeks for around $75,000,000. I am not sure of the specifics but if they include Lebron, Arnold, Shaq or the Cycle bikes that should really send this stock in the right direction. Here is some info on the combined company.
As you can see this company is already profitable. The CEO called it the bargained price Peleton. This is the most cash they have had on their balance sheets and they were up to $880,000,000 without this added capital. The brand awareness should sky rocket after they start broadcasting the new commercials.
The biggest catalyst for the stock besides the short interest is the addiction of BODI live interactive. (Beta testing in August and rollout in September) Most likely they are trying to drive this thing down to get in cheap for this huge event) They are using the technology seen in the NBA and WWE to stream users live into a class setting and have them on a TV where the instructor can interact with them and help them with their form and encourage them. This should be a big deal as it bring interaction that has never been seen besides what the cycling classes are doing.

This is revolutionary for online fitness. It will bring the gym straight into your home and is a very exciting Segway into the future of fitness. I know most people who have tried to get in shape have bought gym memberships that they barely use at some point in their life and they spend money every month on nothing. Beach Body has 2.6 million paid subscribers at this time. It should continue to grow.
Needless to say the companies that have been invested in lately for short squeezes haven't been profitable or sustainable. This one seems to fit the bill of Short Squeeze candidate and a good investment for the future! When I first came across Peleton it was at $17.50. The 52 week high within a year of this low was a high of $171.09. They don't nearly have the library of workouts that BODY has. They don't have the star power of the people I mentioned above. Their exposure started with a controversial commercial that got people talking about the company. This went almost 10x without a short squeeze and any real spokesperson for the stock. Needless to say it seems that BODY could moon! (Peleton commercial below)

I apologize for the long DD but this company is so low right now I feel I have to share everything that I have learned about them. This isn't financial advice just someone trying to be on the cutting edge of a new public company I think has some great promise!
There is a ton of room to grow in all segments of this business. I believe the cycle bike is the best Peleton alternative and it is much cheaper compared to the Peleton bike. Peleton recently had issues with their treadmill sucking kids, pets and other objects underneath them. This leaves some people that would rather find a nice alternative. The swiveling screen on the bike connects to other fitness classes and you can use that screen to get other workouts in as well as cycling classes.

2021.01.08 12:16 Tonymac81 9WCF - Week 1 Day 4 - DCT-T Shoulders

I'm sure everyone is on the edge of their seats awaiting today's penultimate review.
So here we are "Shoulders" - you all know what's coming. Firstly my criticism of the virtual cast over the past few days was appeased today. 4 days in and she mentions a few of the 9 by name, that they are working out at home, at different times of the day, some have home schooling for kids and in her words "from a place of love" you should have zero excuses getting a workout done. Yey, eventually they get mentioned, no close up of them actually working out and really this should have been done every single day so far.
So back to the workout. I actually got a very decent workout this morning burning about 450cals in those 32mins. Yet it was a decent workout because of DUMBBELLS not the piddly control track. Yes only one move done with the control track! The usual 12 min AMRAP, each move done for 12 reps - dumbbells swings, dumbbell curtseys, dumbbell half moons, bicep curls with the control track at lowest point & marching ball crunch (ball at your lower back crunch while alternating leg lifts). After 1 round I swapped out my blue resistance bands to dumbbells and curled. The fear of that damn track breaking and getting pinged in the face was just too much plus I wasn't getting much of a pump.
Complex was simply a bent over fly supersetted with an upright row, 10 reps each, 3 rounds. AC mentioned next week she adds a move but reduces the round - go figure.
Tabata is just over the tops with the step. The usual complaint here heart rate is only starting to rise before I stop.
So I did get a decent workout, a decent leg workout, not a decent shoulder workout. Next week they add a narrow grip shoulder press in the complex. Now here's the thing those 3 moves all, for me, use different weights, especially for 2 rounds of 10 reps. So I'm still not going to get a good shoulder workout or pause and change out which defeats the point of these complexes. (P90X2 and X3 have better complexes)
As I said I swapped out the control track for DBs in the biceps curl. The control track is completely redundant for me in this workout and it was a decent leg workout. My shoulders weren't burnt out and my legs weren't burnt out either just worked out well.
I keep coming back to the question - who is this for? As someone mentioned the other day it is pitched at the "New Year New Me" crew - the advertising on a US New Year show and another one that I just can't recall atm. Yeah this is a beginner level workout or at least someone looking to up from a beginner to intermediate. An intermediate exerciser is going to find it a bit lacking and someone advanced, like me, just won't find the challenge. Really week 3 would be a starting point for an advanced user but as it then regresses in week 4 there is zero point spending your time or dinero on this for VIP access. By the time this is available to all there will be cheaper versions of the control track or simply use 3 door attachments.
Tracker sheets are useless here, they have them available and really if you intend to do more than 1 round yeah "useful" but otherwise a waste of paper.
Last day tomorrow, I'm not wasting my time and effort on this anymore. I get up at 5am to workout, I like to work hard if I'm getting up that damn early. I've also noticed I'm not as tired at night, I usually am asleep at 10ish each night. Not here this week it has been midnight or later. Someone will enjoy it, some are enjoying it from scanning SM make no mistake of that. I really can't see this being a long time win for people they will progress out of it in 9 weeks. I see people doing multiple rounds of P90x/x2/x3, Body Beast, H&C, IM30, Asylum series, 6WoTW etc and progressing, making gains and getting challenged. I just don't see it here with this program. Yeah the newbie gains and losses will hit it but that's where it begins and ends.
Also please note one of the transformation images is "Cupcake" from Autumn's previous programs. His transformation literally looks like the difference between flexing and just letting it go.

2020.12.30 04:15 IJackSparrowCOC Exercise for Obese people: Way to burn fat

How to lose weight quickly but effectively? That is the top concern of overweight people. Trying to lose weight for them seems like an extremely difficult challenge. To effectively burn fat, you need to understand your body and have a specific plan. In this article, VIC will help you do just that.
https://preview.redd.it/qfx7egk8r8861.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=6631d5af78b6223b205b364105a3c6017d1aa208
Around the world, the number of people who are overweight has surpassed skinny people. At the present time, the number of people overweight globally accounts for nearly 30%, about 2.1 billion people. Obese people have a lot of health problems, and it seems like losing weight is extremely difficult.
If you are overweight and are trying to both fast and exercise but still cannot lose weight, then you are probably belong to endomorph type.
Person who belongs to endomorph type features:

https://preview.redd.it/rnlqq65ur8861.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=210b168e39cfa59ee0c668256e64b49e79d4eb86
Most people will be a hybrid of endomorph and mesomorph, or ectomorph and mesomorph, so just following the Endo or Ecto diet and exercise method will be effective.

Why are Endomorph obese people hard to lose weight?

Endomorphs have a slow nutrient metabolism, their bodies easily convert excess calories into fat, especially with foods high in carbs and insulin.
Furthermore, when the stored fat is high, it releases estrogen and decreases testosterone levels, which hinder muscle growth.
Trying to exercise seems to be quite arduous for Endo people. While bulking muscle requires a lot of food, but if you eat a lot, the body converts nutrients into more fat than lean. Similar to cutting muscle, the amount of fat you lose is less than the amount of lean.

How to burn fat and lose weight for Endomorph obese people?

First, must shape your weight loss goals must be fat loss and muscle gain.
If you only lose fat without gaining muscle, your body will not be toned. If you only gain muscle without losing fat, you will never lose weight. An oversized body with a thick amount of fat and muscle will lose all aesthetics.
Therefore, the best way to lose weight is to combine lean muscle bulking and fat cutting.
Combining the right diet and practicing a scientific way will help you achieve the results you want.
Nutrition will not be mentioned in this article, please refer to another VIC article.
Here, VIC will show you a smart and scientific workout regimen exclusively for Endomorph fat people, helping to build lean muscle and burn fat.
Endomorph's exercises are quite similar to those of the Ecto or meso, just that they have to alternate cardio exercises into their training schedule to promote fat burning process.
Schedule exercise to burn fat and gain muscle for Endomorph people
Endo people should combine cardio and weight lifting to boost metabolism and burn more calories.
Cardio is extremely difficult for endomorphs because it uses almost all body movement. If you are new to high intensity training, start slowly, avoiding overtraining in the first session, leading to rapid frustration and also at risk of injury.
The bulking or cutting process also follows the same principle for all types of people.
During the bulking muscle, a rule that applies to all types of people is to push yourself to the limit of your body.
What is pushing the body to the limit?
The answer is: as your body gets used to the current weight, you should add more weights to continue to stimulate your muscles so your body can continue to adapt to that new weight. If you keep the same weight without gradually lifting it, you will not build more muscle, only increase endurance, or even increase the body fat.
Adding weights will reduce the number of reps you train, but your body will reach the limit. Use the heaviest weight for each set.

Exercise schedule to gain muscle and lose fat #1

This workout schedule combines compound exercises for bulking muscle, and alternates on 2 days of cardio to burn more fat. This workout schedule is very suitable for those who do not have too much fat and want to both lose fat and build lean muscle.
All you need to do is register with a gym or buy yourself a set of tools to work out at home (dumbbells or kettlebells are the good choice for you to practice at home).
The training schedule is as follows:
Day 1: Chest and triceps
Flat barbell bench press
  1. Incline Dumbbell Bench Press
  1. Dumbbell flys
  1. Cable crossover
  1. Pushup
  1. Dips
  1. Lying tricep extension
Day 2: back and biceps
  1. Pull-ups
  2. Deadlift
  3. Barbell Bent Over Rows
  4. Lat pulldown
  5. Seated cable row
  6. EZ Bar Biceps Curls (wide/close grips)
  7. Dumbbell hammber curls
Day 3: Cardio
  1. Running
  2. Swimming
  3. Step Mill
Day 4: Shouldethigh/belly muscle
  1. Standing shoulder military press
  2. Dumbbell lateral raises
  3. Calf raises on leg press
  4. Leg raise
  5. Planks
Day 5: Leg mucle
  1. Leg extensions
  2. Hamstring curls
  3. Single leg presses
  4. Glute bridges
Day 6: cardio
  1. Skipping
  2. Cycling
  3. Elliptical
Day 7: off

Exercise schedule to gain muscle and lose fat #2

Exercise # 2 is a very scientific strategy. The strategy of this workout schedule is to cut off excess fat at the beginning, then start building lean muscle. It sounds simple, but cutting fat is always the most frustrating stage, requiring you to have a high will (something most people don't have).
The steps are as follows:
First, think that you need to burn fat with whole body exercises. Start with low-impact exercises.
Remember that "low impact" is different from "low-intensity." A low impact exercise means a low hit the floor when performing a certain movement. And low intensity exercise means that the difficulty of the exercise is low, heart rate and breathing is not strong.
Of course, high-impact exercise will help you burn calories faster, but can be more frustrating quickly. So you can choose a low-impact but still high-intensity exercise for the same calorie-burning effect.
Low impact Exercises:
  1. Cycling
  2. Mountain biking
  3. Race walking
  4. Swimming
  5. Elip machine (running machine/cycling machine)
  6. Ski machine
  7. Stair climber
  8. Rowing
Once you get used to with low impact exercise, progress to high impact movements.
  1. Running
  2. Skipping
  3. Plyometrics
  4. Crossfit exercises
  5. P90X
These exercises are very tiring, make the heart beat and breathe faster, but the efficiency level of calorie burning is very high, further improving your heart health.
Choose the exercises that are right for you and do it regularly 4-5 days / week, depending on your condition and strength. Remember to take a variety of exercises so you don't get bored. If the results are not what you expected, increase the number of sessions.
Please note that yoga, tai chi, and pilates exercises are not cardio exercises. The fat-burning effects of these exercises are not as good as high or low impact exercises.
Keep track of your weight once a week or once a month. You do not need to watch too much because it will affect psychology.
After a period of cardio training to burn fat and lose a certain weight (2-3 months), your body is now getting used to the intensity of the exercise, the next thing to do is bulking lean muscle.
Since you've already consumed a lot of body fat, you need to quickly switch to combining bulking exercises and cut back on cardio schedule.
At this point, a training schedule similar to the # 1 is very reasonable. The principle of bulking remains the same, choosing a heavy weight so that the maximum number of reps to reach the limit of your body.
Combine it with 2 days of cardio to ensure the fat burning is still going on because your body has not yet gotten rid of the endomorph that stores more fat than the average person.

Conclusion

Losing weight is never easy, if you don't have the determination and specific goals, the success rate is very low.
The depression caused by exercise fatigue or the cravings of diet during exercise has knocked out the will of many people. Are you one of them?
Think that you absolutely can do it, because many people have done it before you and now they have completely transformed and have a desirable body. Read and learn about those people to get motivated to practice.

2020.09.05 16:26 3dubya This is it and we are....

DONE!!!
Finished P90x classic (with some modifications, will discuss later) in 90 days!
I'm a 37 year old male, I lost 33.2 pounds (232.2 to 199.0). Diet consisted of 16:8 intermittent fasting, targeting 1800 calories per day, just focused on calories.
My modifications to the program were :
1) Replaced Kenpo X with X3 MMX and X3 Yoga (back to back)
2) Pull up/chin up routines followed this formula (where possible): max rep unassisted, then using assist band to meet 10 reps, then 3 to 5 eccentric. For example pull ups: 6 unassisted - 4 assisted - 3 eccentric.
3) Modified some shoulder moves. Specifically upright rows, pour flyes, throw the bomb.
Thoughts and observations :
1) Oh my Tony Horton do I feel good now, stronger and more energetic... However...
2) Some days I felt like my body was moving through molasses. Just tired, and slow moving. These days I just had to push through and not lose motivation. Always though, once I started working out, about 15 minutes in I felt great and killed the workout!
3) I love yoga! An hour and a half is a long time, but if you clear your mind and stay in the now, it is awesome!
4) Speaking of yoga, I HATE yoga belly 7, worst part of the entire program lol
5) The stronger you get, the workouts do not get easier. You just get better at them
6) Favorite workout is chest and back, I just love that routine.
7) Favorite cast member is Daniel Haas, that dude just gets it
8) Favorite Tony "joke' is in plyo after a round of jump gaps the dialog is along the lines of "we are having some fun man! Squat jacks, fun's over!"
9) I had some friends do a couple of workouts with me a couple months into the program, and it felt great kicking their ass!!! I know it's not a competition, but whatever!
10) The warmup on core synergistic bugs me because it is out of order compared to the other resistance warm-ups.
11) Keep track of everything! I used a spiral notebook. I tracked reps, weights, times, calories burned, unassisted pull ups, assisted pull ups, eccentric pull ups, approximately how much of an isometric move I could do, everything! Write it all down and try to do better every time!
12) However, with writing everything down, I sometimes thought past me was an over achieving jerk, when I had to try to beat those volumes.
13) My transformation was not fat to ripped like you see on the ads, but it was only 3 Months. You have to keep realistic goals in mind. I'm happy with my progress and I will achieve more. I will not compare my progress to the typical before and afters you see.
14) Enjoy the ride! I love p90x and Tony Horton! I'm glad he brought this to us!
My plan is to immediately start X2. I don't think I'm completely ready for it, but I'm going to do my best and do phase 1 until I feel ready to move on. This time for diet, I'm going away from the fasting and focusing on macro nutrient targets. I hope to see some great results with this.
I think my long term plan is to do the following : X2 - X3 - X2 - X1 - X2 - X3 repeat repeat repeat.
If you read this, I appreciate it! I love seeing content on this subreddit! Keep pushing play, but more importantly keep pushing yourself!

2020.08.04 22:59 nitran27 Just finished OG insanity and MAX 30

On March 20th of this year my friend and I decided to do OG insanity together via zoom since my gym closed with no foreseeable reopening date. I wanted to avoid gaining weight due to working from home. I had no experience with insanity prior to this as i was only into weight lifting, lastly I only did a couple of cycles of p90x back in college. My only knowledge of insanity was those infomercials from back in the day.
My first day with insanity I thought it was a great workout and throughout the whole process we were consistent with our workouts via zoom every morning at 615 AM. Upon finishing OG insanity around mid May we decided to switch to MAX 30 and we concluded Max 30 with our last Friday night round 2 last Friday. upon conclusion of max 30 they recommend you go back and redo a month one workout one to gauge your progress. I did do this last Saturday but I must admit I was a bit disappointed in my performance as I was hoping it would be a bit easier.
Throughout OG and Max 30, I never took photos or tracked my results in OG insanity and I never did the max out time nor did I put too much emphasis on the fit test. I simply showed up every morning as I made it a part of my routine. For me the workouts were just to give me a sense of normalcy and feeling of productivity in an otherwise crazy time. My weight has remained the same, I didn’t diet very much, but I do feel much better and importantly I didn’t gain any weight during quarantine. I do feel I have more definition on my upper body although I have no proof since there are no photos.
Upon finishing max 30 last week my friend and I decided our next goal would be to go back to month 2 of OG insanity followed by month 2 of max 30 next month. Earlier when I was talking about my disappointment in my performance upon finishing max 30, going back to OG insanity month 2 workouts after graduating MAX 30 was when I finally was able to see my progress and felt great. I always hated how many push-ups were in MAX 30 month 2 and could never get through the whole video and that was one of my few criticisms of Max 30 was too many pushups.
But upon going back to OG insanity this morning I was surprised that all those pushups from MAX 30 have made level 3 drills, power pushups and balance push ups and all shoulder pushups so much easier that I was able to get through all of OG Max interval plyo without a break, whereas initially I had to stop mid drill to catch a breath. I felt much lighter on my feet and those burpees are so much more doable than before. I also enjoy the pace of OG insanity more as the ten minute warm up followed by the stretching allows me to have better performance during the main part of the workout as my body has had a chance to warm up since I do it first thing in the morning.
Additionally, I enjoy seeing the cast of people in OG insanity more than Max 30. My thoughts on going back to OG this morning were it’s nice to look up at the screen and see Tania working hard or Akiel hardly working. My friend and I smile over that while we’re still pushing for our best. Our favorite part is when Jeff decides to show off but almost kicks Ariel in the face by trying to be cool with a break dancing move afterwards (who does that???). The cast in Max 30 while great, I feel don’t have the character that comes with the original. I can’t explain it who knows maybe it’s that low budget high school gym that they’re in but it felt nice to go back to the familiarity of OG month 2.
So if you had the same mindset as me when it came to those push-ups in max 30 and felt it was too much. Know that they do work and the results will show up in the most unexpected way if you keep pushing play. Its just hard to appreciate them as you’re going through it when your chest and shoulders are on fire and you want to just go into child’s pose.
Lastly probably the most rewarding part of all this is allowing me to reconnect of my friend of over ten years. We went to college together but now he lives 8 hours away from me with 2 kids so we barely had time to remain in touch. Luckily during COVID we used insanity as a way of staying healthy, and now even though my gym has reopened I have opted to keep doing insanity with him via zoom.

Am I missing any Sagi Kalev workouts & any people/programs similar to Body Beast?
Hi - I posted this initially in the reddit Body Beast group but only got 1 response - I think this group is much bigger.
I had gotten into weightlifting in the gym, but now that the gyms are closed due to COVID, I have started returning to Beachbody, particularly Sagi. I have summarized EVERY Sagi workout I can find:
a) Body Beast "Classic"1 Beast Basics, 4 Build, 5 Bulk, 4 Beast, 1 Rockabye, 1 Lucky Seven, 2 Tempo b) Eight Hammer workouts (7 reg, 2 deluxe) and 1 video together with Autumn called Masters Cardio c) Five Week of Hard Labor Workouts d) 2 Body Beast "Refreshed/Reboot" workouts - a "redo" where they added women cast membersd) Two Beast Up! videos (Chest & Shoulder &Tris, Legs) on BOD (under Body Beast) e) Six Equipment Room Workouts (in Sagi BOD Exclusives)
I tend to do b) - e) 90% of the time - I get more motivated when Talia or the blonde woman is there!
SMy questions:
  1. Have I overlooked anything -- are there any other Beachbody workouts where Sagi appears?
  2. Does Sagi offer any additional free or paid workouts elsewhere, e.g. Youtube, bodybuilding.com
  3. What other Beachbody workouts do you supplement with ? I like P90x3, P90x muscle workouts.I will be trying LIIFT4. I am only recently getting back to Beachbody after about 4 years and I am not yet used to Joel. It seems I work harder and push more when Sagi is YELLING at me, e.g. saying YOU WANT RESULTS? THEN YOU GOT TO WORK! GET A BOWL SO YOU CAN PUKE!
  4. Is there any other Sagi-like person or bodybuilding workouts at Dailyburn, Centr, or Peleton?

a) Body Beast "Classic"1 Beast Basics, 4 Build, 5 Bulk, 4 Beast, 1 Rockabye, 1 Lucky 7, 2 "Deluxe" Tempo workoutsb) Eight Hammer workouts (7 reg, 2 deluxe) and 1 video together with Autumn called Masters Cardioc) Five Week of Hard Labor Workouts2 Body Beast "Refreshed/Reboot" workouts were they recreated the set and added women cast members (Total Body, and Abs - available on Hammer & Chisel DVDs and also in BOD under Sagi Exclusives)d) Two Beast Up! videos (Chest & Shoulder &Tris, Legs) on BOD (under Body Beast)e) Six Equipment Room Workouts (in Sagi BOD Exclusives)
I find myself workout out to all of the above *EXCEPT* for Body Beast classic because I am more inspired to complete the workout with Talia or the other women, plus Body Beast "classic" just seems really old / 70'sish.
So my questions are:
  1. Have I overlooked anything -- are there any other Beachbody workouts where Sagi appears?

2017.12.11 19:08 tectactoe Lifting seriously for ~7 years, been doing Beyond 531 for the last 2 years. Need to make some changes in my life, becoming physically and MENTALLY exhausted.

RETROACTIVE EDIT [171212]: First of all, I want to say thank you to anybody and everybody that responded with legitimate advice, even if it was just "take a break!" Sometimes it's hard to convince your own mind that you need to do something until you hear experiences from others who have been-there/done-that and came out on top.
Secondly, I had no idea this would get so big, I honestly was afraid it would get deleted by the mods but I'm glad it has spurred some discussion - something I wasn't expecting when I decided to post my personal rant. Even reading over the comments yesterday, I've learned quite a bit. It just goes to show you, even after seven years, there's still so much more to learn. I will do my best to get through the comments and reply to everyone that's posed a question, but it might take me some time!
Third, I have taken the last ~2 weeks off and I already feel mentally better. Not ready to go jumping back into heavy squats/deads at 5am just yet, but I'm learning to become more "mentally okay" with the idea that I have absolutely no reason to NEED to lift that much, other than personal pride. A lot of people suggested putting my acquired strength to use - I've decided after the new year, I'm going to look into boxing classes/lessons. There are a few places near me that offer them once or twice a week, ranging anywhere from 30-90 minute sessions, so I think I'll be able to fit it into my schedule, even with the new baby. I've always wanted to learn how to box, honestly don't know why I hadn't looked into this sooner. Not only that, but it will help my cardiovascular health/endurance, which kind of sucks right now to be honest.
Lastly, to the few who commented that this was some kind of humblebrag, or conversely that I was full of shit and haven't been lifting that long, or can't lift the weight I've said -- well, I'm sorry you feel that way. But I don't see how it's "bragging" to basically admit that the thing you use to love is making you hate waking up in the morning or even dread going to bed the night before. To those of you who think I'm lying about my numbers? That's not what I'm here for. But if you look at my post history you can see about one year ago, I posted a video of my first ever 500 lb dead lift (Dec 20th of last year) and it's still on Youtube. It's safe to assume that I've added some weight to that lift since then, no? Even still, I stand nothing to gain from lying about my numbers, and I feel sorry for you if that's what you think this is about. To everyone else who replied: THANK YOU.
So maybe this isn't the best topic of discussion, because the answer could always be, "stop being a bitch, you're just afraid of hard work.
But I can tell you that's not the case. Within the last (almost) seven years, I've been consistently hitting the gym, starting with P90x, moving to Starting Strength, ICF, 5/3/1, and finally Beyond 5/3/1, which I'm currently doing. I have never taken more than a week off at a time over those seven years, and only when absolutely necessary (broken finger, vacation, traveling for work), probably about one week off every 6 months over the last seven years.
With my current situation (wife, house, new baby) I need to workout before work, I have no time at lunch and I have more important matters to attend to at home after work. This constitutes me getting up every day at 5:00 so I can be at the gym by 5:30 when they open.
The problem is, I'm getting burned out. Severely. Not even so much physically (my body feels fine, for the most part) but mentally. Getting up at 5:00 to go squat 400 lbs is becoming dreadful, honestly. Even to the point where I start feeling bad about it the night before. I have pushed myself to be consistent and work through the mental blocks, but it's getting to the point where it's casting a shadow of doom over my whole life. It's like my life revolves around the gym and I HATE that.
Of course I love being strong and in shape, but not at the expense of my mental health. And the thing is, I don't compete in body building, or power lifting, so this is literally just a leisurely activity for me, and nothing more. I do it to look and feel good -- and bodily-wise, I do -- but mentally, I hate it.
My workouts take way too long ( I think ). Most days are close to 1 hr 45 mins, with leg day taking closer to 2 hrs and back day taking 2.5 hours. One problem could be the Wendler sets. For example, on dead lift day, I'll do the following:
3 warm up sets
2 prescribed work sets, increasing in weight
1 "as many as possible" set (increased weight)
3 "joker sets" (increased weight)
3 "light" sets, (decreased weight, maybe like 3x10)
And then I'll go on and end up doing 6 more exercises for back day. Like T Bar Row, Yates Rowes, Lat Bar Pull Downs, Single Arm Dumbbell Rows, Overhead Lat Raises, Pull Ups. So this takes me like 2.5 hours to do and I just can't do it anymore.
You can call it wimping out if you want. Hell, maybe it is. But I just want to go back to the times where going to the gym was fun. I don't enjoy my routine anymore. It's grueling and it's unnecessary for this point in my life. I want something that I can do 4x week in under an hour.
BUT, I also don't want to completely lose my physique or strength. I mean, I know I can't expect to work less (or less hard) and stay the same size/strength, but I don't want to sacrifice it all, either. If that were the case, I'd just diet and do cardio for an hour each day.
Another thing is eating that's killing me, and buying food is too damn expensive, especially with a baby now. I eat ~4000 calories per day on lift days (4x/week) and 3500 on off days. It's too much. I can't eat that damn much anymore, but that was the only wait for me to slowly gain weight. Even eating like that, I have kind of leveled off around 208 lbs body weight.
SO, what's the point of all this?
I'm looking for advice. I mean, I looked through the list of routines, but I need advice from someone who's maybe been in a similar situation as me, as to which one would be the best. Looking for something I can do in an hour or less, 4x/week (maybe even 3x/week?) but still maintain good physique and strength, and ideally I'd like to eat around 3k calories per day. I think that's manageable within how much I can afford and how much I can physically eat without making myself sick. If I lose a little strength or size, so be it, but I don't want to FEAR the gym anymore. I'm tired of being so mentally... tired.
tl;dr I've worked my ass off for 7 years with nonstop high intensity. It's been rewarding as hell, but it's becoming mentally exhausting. Spending too much time eating and too much money on food to maintain size/strength (3.5-4k calories per day), spending too much time in the gym (1.5-2.5 hrs per session), and due to some life changes (my age, my new baby, my mental health), it's time for me to ramp down the intensity and just maintain with something I can complete without HATING my time in the gym. Any suggestions?
Thank you anyone who read this far!

2017.06.13 16:54 blazecoolman Is it normal to need much longer breaks when moving to Month 2?

I'm doing a P90X/Insanity hybrid and after doing Moth 1 workouts for about a month and half, I thought I was strong enough to graduate to Month 2. Boy, was I wrong. I did Max Interval Circuit today and it knocked the wind out of me. I managed to do 70% of what the cast was doing, but I needed much longer breaks, in the final circuit. I knew it'd be hard but my experience was very different. More than the physical exhaustion, I was getting worn out mentally. Is this expected?
P.S. Between Max Interval Cardio and Max Interval Plyo, which one would you recommend (my primary goal is fat burning)?

Footnotes: 1 - Gregory Schulz, Divine Comedy: Reflections: "Kenny Baldwin has begun to show his hand as a spectacularly innovative writer with heretofore untouched ideas, like 1-800-ABRACADABRA and Happiest Man in The World." Kenny, as far as I know, only appeared on camera in one Studio C episode: Teddy's Story Joint (behind Stacey). 2 - While the Divine Comedy Lobster Bisque video predates the Studio C version by a few months (Jan 2013 vs. May 2013), it is not clear whether the character was developed first in DC or whether the DC version was merely to get the kinks out before filming in Studio C. See also Team C: Scott Sterling scores big for Studio C, UtahValley360.com:
James has a “nervous tick of doing voices backstage.
“Jason liked this particular voice I was doing, and when I said the word ‘bisque,’ he thought it was really funny.”
So James fleshed out the “Lobster Bisque” character and a potential setting, loosely patterned after the “Cheese Shop” scene from Monty Python.
Assuming the Divine Comedy version was actually performed in fall 2012, Jason would still have been in DC at the time (see Divine Comedy Alumni). So the evidence is inconclusive.

I know there are several more sketches that were first done in Divine Comedy that I can't find any video for.
  • Channel Surfing appears briefly at 0:57 in the Fall 2008 Blooper Reel (edit 1/2017: it was finally uploaded and I added it to the table)
  • Chatterboxes is mentioned by Gregory Schulz
  • The original Shoulder Angel (though it might not have been done precisely the same way in DC) (edit 12/2016: it was not)
  • Spencer the extremely young roommate is mentioned in Phantom of the Awkward
And DC's Collateral was done in season 6 episode 16 (around the 12:00 mark), but apparently it was never released on YouTube for some reason.
Any more that I forgot? Left out? Got wrong? Please post in the comments!
Edit 3/2017: Added Love Fairy Training which I hadn't seen before.
Edit 3/2017 (2): Added DC channel's version of How Are You Feeling Today? which had been de-listed from YouTube for some time.
Edit 5/2017: Same for Dana's Dead and Trip to the ER.
Edit 5/2017 (2): Mention of Collateral.
Edit 10/2017: Added Tired Tenor/Sleep-Deprived Job Interview.
Edit 11/2017: Added Monster Under the Bed and Cowboy Math/Scary Ghost Stories That Don't Add Up. There's at least one more (Trying To Impress) that has been aired on Studio C but hasn't come out on YouTube yet.

2016.07.31 07:11 franticshouting You made the best gin and tonics.

Tonight, I'm letting myself remember you.
I remember how you looked.
Six feet tall, exactly.
Thick head of dark, dark hair.
Dark eyes.
Thin lips with a sideways smile.
Small hands, for a man.
Strong arms.
You were so self-conscious of your body. You refused to be convinced that I found you perfect as you are. You said you had love-handles, but I couldn't see them.
I saw an incredibly unique blending of strength and softness.
Your knees, thighs, shoulders, arms, chest...
You worked full-time in a warehouse, shipping plastic. Tons. Driving a forklift. Carrying pallets on your shoulders.
You'd come home with dirty hands.
Small, soft, yet calloused dirty hands.
Your eyes broke me. Your smile broke me.
You had this laugh—it was goofy as fuck. I'll give you that. You laughed that way specifically when you thought something was outrageously hilarious. High-pitched, with your eyes mostly closed and your fists pulled up against your chest. Such a goofy laugh, but I loved it. I loved seeing you happy.
You were always on the lookout for something funny.
As discerning as you were, it wasn't hard to make you laugh that way.
And the sex. Yeah, let's talk about the sex for a minute.
You were stronger than you realized. In addition to all that heavy lifting you did at your job, you started most days with some pushups by your front door. Just to get them out of the way. Just to say you did them.
You did that P90X stuff sometimes too, when you though you were getting fat. Use to show me some of the wild yoga moves they made you do. It tickled you.
But you were strong. Strong enough to hold yourself above me for long periods of time.
That's what you did. You got on top of me first.
You liked to dominate. And you would.
You'd take me for a while, show me who you were, show me who I was...that I was your pet, and you were my master, and you'd hover above me with those biceps flexed, elbows digging into the bed.
Then you'd stop. Slow down.
Touch my face.
Kiss me softly with your thin, gentle lips.
"I'm going to marry you," you told me, with a crooked smile and a twinkle in your eye.
The sex was intense—everywhere.
But that was only a fraction of what I'll remember you for.
I'll remember my first gin and tonic. You made it for me. It didn't taste like alcohol it all—it tasted crisp, tart, and reminded me of Topo Chico, a drink I used to have often when I lived on the border of Texas/Mexico. It reminded me of my home, as did you.
We'd have them while listening to your extensive record collection.
You replayed me music that made me come alive when I was a teenager. Music that no one else around here had ever heard of, and if they had, they hadn't cared about it.
But you and I—we remembered. Those bands tore us up in our youth and they tore us up as we approached 30, then 31, then 32...
Bright Eyes. Saves the Day. The Get Up Kids. Cursive. Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. Rilo Kiley. The Appleseed Cast. The Format. Okervil River.
Okervil River.
You put on Black Sheep Boy and we laid down in your bed with no intention of doing anything.
We stared at each other while it played. In awe of what we had found.
Hours later the record was clicking away in the silence of your room while we lay entwined in one another. You'd stroke my face and smile and somewhere inside me I was in awe that you...you were looking at me that way. You.
What we had came from somewhere inexplicable. It made me think about believing in god again. Or the fates. Or something. Anything.
What we had made me believe in magic.
Then came the monkey wrenches.
Monkey wrench. Monkey wrench. Monkey wrench.
That's what happens when people like you and I fall in love as hard as we did.
When somewhere deep inside either of us, we didn't believe we deserved that love.
We knew, somewhere nestled in our subconscious, that the people we love only ever leave us.
The people we love lie. They hide. They run.
So we treated each other as such.
We each fulfilled our own horrendous prophecy.
Still, 3 years we tried to make it work.
You told me I was beautiful on October 3, 2013.
I'll remember October 3 for as long as I can.
That started nearly 3 years of passionate love, uproarious laughs, conversations that carried on for hours and hours, long drives, hundreds of records, thousands of kisses...
3 years of screaming, throwing, stalking, hiding, crying, panicking...
I had to go.
Yesterday, you moved away.
I've been with another man now for 3 months.
2 months ago, you realized I was serious when I said that I was done with you.
That's how long it took you to pack up and leave town.
I still mourn you.
Every day, I mourn you.
I wonder if I made the right decision.
I have no idea how to know that for sure.
But I remember your lips. Your arms. Your hands.
I remember your smile, your laugh.
I remember calling you the "love of my life," something I've never called anyone...something I can't call my current love for as much as I am also enthralled and in awe of him.
You are the end all be all.
I've been in therapy for years and so much of the content of my sessions has to do with you...what you meant. Why you lived. Why we lived.
But I want you to know this:
We cannot speak.
But I love you.
I love you. I love you.
My love for you is music. My love for you is the sun draping itself over the trees in the early mornings. My love for you is Dylan and Spoon and Wilco and Why and Elvis Costello. My love for you is gin and tonic. My love for you is the fall air, the clean scent of it. My love for you is moonlight. My love for you is all the words I have left.
And I am sorry.
I am sorry.
I am sorry.
Bloom in Bloomington.
I hope one day, you do a Google search for the phrase Story Ellis and find this post.
Put quotes around it. "Story Ellis."
Know that I have loved you madly.
Know that I only want you to be happy. And I knew you couldn't be happy with me.
Know that I still dream.
Know that you are beautiful, and worthy.
You are.
You are, my love. Love of my life.
I know you'll have nothing to do with me.
I know Maine is unlikely.
But know that I'll never marry anyone in Maine but you.

2016.07.25 01:18 Zevbra Dear Blizzard, Thank you for making Torbjorn

It's no secret that Overwatch has a very diverse cast of characters, but Torbjorn in particular really shocked me. I'm a dwarf myself, and although I am not quite as fat as Torby (just picked up p90x) I really appreciate the attention Torbjorn was given as a front line support for his team.
It's really stupid, I know, but the fact that I actually play the team carry, pushing payloads, having my team walk up to me and ask for protection b4 charging into the fray, and dying. It's just really good design. You really did make Torb mechanically a creepy uncle for his whole team. So again, thanks. You did a really great job with him.
