**Marxism** is a growing/changing economic/sociopolitical worldview and method of socioeconomic inquiry based upon a materialist interpretation of historical development, a dialectical view of social change, and an analysis of class-relations within society and their application in the analysis and critique of the development of capitalism. Marxism encompasses an economic theory, a sociological theory, a philosophical method and a *revolutionary* view of social change.

2024.05.16 03:15 KGB_Officer_Ripamon Eli5 network speeds/bandwidth

Hey all, Just want some education on network speeds on devices and switches. I will say that I undertstand the basics of an example is if my router is 10gbs and my modem and all devices are 1gbs then I can only gets speeds of 1gbs to my devices and the internet.
So my question is LAN bandwidth and I’ll try and keep this simple. Let’s say I have 5 computers with 1gb Ethernet ports at my business and all connected to a 1gbs switch and all of my employees are transferring a massive file to each other or into the internet, is the speeds across all 5computers through this 5 port 1gb switch basically 1000 ÷ 5 = 200mbs speeds??
Now if I I get a 5 port 5gb switch and my employees are transferring files to each other over lan does that mean speeds are 5000 ÷ 5 = 1000mbs speeds.
I understand my internet speeds are limited to what my router, modem and device ports are at, but I’m asking about data transfer between LAN network.
Also does this theory apply to wifi6 compatible devices so if I have to transfer my file to another computer over my Wifi6 next work. Does that allow me to get the 9.6gb speeds between devices? Like are really fast apple airdrop

2024.05.16 02:45 hermit-throwaway My (M29) parents' divorce ruined me and everyone is worse off for it

I feel like when it comes to discussions about divorces involving children, 99% of the time people say it was better the divorce happened than if two people that didn't love each other stayed together for the sake of the kids. I want to share my story, because that was not my experience as the kid of divorced parents.
Almost two decades ago when I was 10 years old, my parents told my sister and I they were getting a divorce. They said they didn't get along anymore and we wouldn't all be living together anymore, but they would still be our mom and dad and we would live with each of them. I bawled my eyes out uncontrollably that night, completely shattered. In reality, my dad had spiraled down a 9-year-long addiction to opioid pills that meant he was high 24/7, lost his job, and was doing reckless things like drinking and driving, even with me in the car. Not to mention the impact it had on everyday life, vacations, finances etc. It drove my mom to her breaking point where she wanted a divorce, but first helped him get sober with staging an intervention and then getting him into rehab and NA.
Gradually my dad moved out to an apartment nearby, our house was sold and my mom bought a smaller one a town over, my sister and I would go back and forth between staying with each parent each week, and they both started dating. About a year after the divorce, my dad started seeing a woman of a far trashier, immature nature compared to my mom. He moved her in after a month, and long story short, my dad was heavily dedicated to her and changing from her influence, becoming a juvenile 40-something man unrecognizable to me. All while he had two young adolescent kids to raise who just had their world's shattered. My sister and I felt like afterthoughts, and I blame my dad for that as well as my now-stepmom for fully seeing the situation she was walking into, the impact it had on my sister and I, and still diving head-first into it. She quit her job as a nurse pretty early on to be a stay-at-home wife, even though my dad was making just OK money.
As for my mom, she lost her job shortly after the divorce due to insubordination, and then never held a job of the same seniority/salary/importance ever again. She spent the remainder of my childhood staying at home raising my sister and I, who eventually moved in with her full time to get away from being around my stepmom until we went to college. She had a few smaller jobs she'd last a few months at, but that's essentially been her career ever since but with a steady decline. She was a vice president of a Fortune 500 company, and now she's on the phone in a call center making a little more than minimum wage.
She dated a little too, but never got as serious with anyone as my dad did. Part of it may have been that she just couldn't catch the kind of guy she was looking for, but part of it may have been seeing the impact one stepparent was having on my sister and I. I'm sorry she's still alone and may be alone the rest of her life. But I'm also glad we had her full attention and care when we were growing up, because I was thinking about ending my life every day of those years, and the addition of another new strange adult living with me and having nowhere for me to escape to probably would have put me over the edge. I did attempt in college several times, but had a moment of reckoning and decided to see life through.
Part of the reason for her overall decline too has been her descent into alcoholism, starting a couple of years before the divorce but the scope of it not fully visible at the time. From when I was 12 onwards, she's gone through cycles of sobering up, working AA, gradually checking out of AA, functionally relapsing, descending into disfunction/rock bottom and repeat every 18 months or so. Her latest period as a full-blown alcoholic was her worst, and she was more of a mess than my dad ever was. He's relapsed twice over the years, but to his credit, they were relatively brief periods of relapse and he's seriously worked the 12-step program to maintain sobriety otherwise. He now owns a home near where I grew up.
In summary: I absolutely recognize what my mom went through for 9 years with my dad's drug addiction and I can imagine the stress it put her through, the impact it had in shaping those years of her life, and how out of love she must have felt after so many incidents with my dad being high. That said, I've always felt a massive hole in my chest every day of these last 19 years, and hindsight has only further made me feel like the divorce was a mistake. I can't put myself in my mom's shoes, but I wish she had given my dad a last chance once he was sober. He's a better man sober. I can't help dreaming of "What if's" even when it only hurts to imagine. If my parents stayed together, maybe we would have still had our big, beautiful house; maybe my mom's alcoholism wouldn't have been so out of hand with my dad to support her own sobriety; maybe my mom wouldn't be living in a sober house 200 miles away right now with barely a dollar to her name; maybe my dad would have a repaired relationship with his kids instead of barely seeing one and never hearing from the other; maybe I would actually want to have a family of my own instead of worrying there's a chance I really ruin my kids in some way too; maybe I would be able to hold down a relationship of my own without getting anxiety about the future if I had an example of a united family to look up to or even parents that could give me useful relationship advice; maybe my chronic depression wouldn't have started so early or at all so that I'd never eat myself to morbid obesity. Or maybe not.
Look, yeah, we can never know one way or the other for sure. But if they knew then where their lives, my life, and my sister's life would end up, I think they would have found a way to make it work.
I don't think I'll ever fully be ok with everything that happened or how it's shaped me. I wish I could be, and I wish I could move past all of it, but this was all some destructive shit.
TL;DR - I'm sharing this as a counter to the popular idea that divorce is always better, especially for the kids when there's kids involved. My unbeknownst-alcoholic mom divorced my long term opioid pill-addicted dad when I was 10, my mom helped my dad sober up during the divorce. My dad quickly started seeing a trashy woman that he moved in with him and invested most of his time, love, and attention into, and he eventually bought a house for them. My mom lost her job, essentially never held another serious full-time job again, descended deep into alcoholism with a dozen relapses and sobering-ups over the years, is flat broke and never found another partner. It's almost two decades later and I'm a 29-year-old man, and the effects of the divorce left a lasting trauma on me that a life of therapy hasn't and won't fix. It's also influenced my aversion to ever having a family of my own, my struggles to have a serious long-term relationship with someone, and overall plays a roll in my chronic depression.

2024.05.16 02:44 berrmal64 Active, older dog - post leg surgery care suggestions

Tldr - 12 yr old, active dog had leg surgery requiring bed rest for 14 days, and she's very bored. How to help her cope? We've got ice, treats, and trying to think of games that don't involve her standing.
Full story: My dog is 12 years 2 months old, 83 lbs, boxer mix, short hair. She's always been high energy and active. As recently as last week we were walking 30-45 minutes at least once a day and she has no problem with stamina.
For several months she's had a lipoma growing in a rear leg. The vet and I have been watching it, and it has been causing her to limp and bunny hop up steps so we decided it should be removed. Her blood work was all very good. She has no other health problems.
Surgery was 2 days ago. The incision is on the trailing edge of the haunch/thigh. We cleaned her crate and moved it to the first floor of our house (it's normally on a second floor, she's crate trained and sleeps there of her own volition sometimes but she usually prefers the living room couch). It's in a cozy spot she likes.
The vet's recovery instructions are: Do not encourage play for 14 days. Slow leash walks only to toilet for 14 days. Then stretch walks by 5 minutes every 3 days till walks are 20 minutes long. Then resume normal activity.
Part of why this is so restrictive is the vet didn't put drains in - they had planned to beforehand but didn't feel comfortable during the procedure because of where the arteries were relative to the incision. The restrictive rest is in hope of reducing irritation and swelling there and needing to bring her back to the office to drain fluid.
At discharge the nurse suggested she be mostly in her crate for the first 14 days. We were given gabapentin and carprofen.
This worked for the first 36 hours, but even on the gabapentin she is obviously bored and wants out of the crate. We are going to the back yard briefly a few times a day (on leash, no play, just to toilet), I'm sitting beside her in the crate with door open, petting and giving treats for simple commands like laying her head down and shaking, I'm feeding her food and water, but with work and kids my time to spend with her is limited. We are keeping a bowl of ice in the crate too, she seems to like this. Also, peanut butter kongs.
2 big questions:
What else could we try as far as activity/entertainment? Her normal happy place/outlet is a long walk. We have a couple food puzzles, and I plan to try them however she's never been much of a fan of them before.
How can we judge her recovery, as far as when she should be allowed more freedom? For example, after 4 days can she sit with us on the couch instead of in her crate? What about laying down outside? Etc?
Cheers

2024.05.16 02:37 fiddlelake Making Mistakes...How common are they?

How common are small mistakes? I have been a new for 3 years but only 4 months into an acute care setting.
For example, I have personally discovered 3 med errors by other nurses. 2 have been when I checked the bag that was infusing and both were wrong doses. One was a IV antibiotic that was hung and never spiked. All different nurses. All very experienced.
There have been a couple times where I have not unclamped the secondary. Both of these were realized shortly after. I also forgot to change the TPN bag within the 24-hour window. Done a couple other things not up to "policy".
However, I made my first true med error last week, have a PRN pain med at the 5-hour mark. It was supposed to be Q6hrs. My first incident report on myself.
Another time I walked in on my patient at shift change who was tied, yes TIED, to a chair with 2 gaitbelts. This patient was nonverbal and had limited mobility. The night nurse said she did this so the patient wouldn't fall out of the chair. The manager also saw. I'm not sure if anything came of it.
On day when I was feeling bad about my mistakes, my manager told me she forgot to lock a bed when she was transferring a patient and they hit the floor and broke bones and had other injuries. She said everyone makes them.
I haven't received discipline for my mistakes. I talk to my manager a if I feel like I couldve done something differently or could improve, which is a lot. I feel like a new nurse all over again switching to acute care. I feel like one day I'm gonna walk in and get fired. I compare myself to my co-workers, I didn't drop a patient or tie someone to a chair so I think I'll be okay. Those nurses still work there.

  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has filed two lawsuits against Amazon, accusing the company of engaging in deceptive business practices and sustaining a monopoly by restricting lower prices off their platform.
  • The lawsuits argue that Amazon's practices, such as using "dark patterns" to complicate canceling Amazon Prime subscriptions, violate Arizona’s Consumer Fraud Act.
  • Additionally, the company is accused of maintaining its monopoly by making agreements that prevent third-party sellers from offering lower prices outside of Amazon, in violation of Arizona’s Uniform State Antitrust Act.
  • Amazon’s Buy Box algorithm is under scrutiny for allegedly favoring products that generate higher fees for Amazon, potentially misleading consumers about getting the best price.
  • These actions mirror federal complaints by the FTC and others, highlighting a broader concern about Amazon's market influence and consumer tactics.
In a highlighting example of the allegations, the Arizona Attorney General's lawsuit emphasizes that Amazon's Buy Box algorithm may bias towards offers that enrich Amazon itself, rather than ensuring customers receive the best deal available. This critique suggests a significant and possibly systematic inclination within Amazon’s design to prioritize its own profits over consumer savings.
Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle said the company was “surprised and disappointed by these cases” and defended Prime’s sign-up and cancellation processes as “clear and simple by design.”
Despite the legal challenges and allegations of anti-competitive behavior, Amazon maintains that its practices are consumer-friendly and accuses the Arizona AG of a "fundamental misunderstanding and mischaracterization of how Amazon’s businesses work." This claim puts a spotlight on the complexity of digital marketplaces and the challenge of balancing business innovation with consumer protection.

2024.05.16 02:28 Felix_Todd Should I familiarize myself with Web Dev technologies (js, html, css, react, vue...) If I DO NOT intend to become a Web Developer?

I am early in my programming journey and want to start building projects.
For example, I want to start playing around with some maths concepts, essentially coding a graph theory solvevisualizer and also maybe playing around with some other concepts.
The thing is, I only learned basic java in school, and the only UI library I am familiar with is JavaFX.
Sure, I could probably do what I want in JavaFX, but I wonder what is the value of this, since JavaFX is very rarely used in industry.
So I had the idea of making my graph theory visualizer on a website, as creating a website that could be used by students to help with their math problem would showcase that I am able to create a product that has real world utility.
So I set myself on this path of learning javascript, CSS, HTML and React and now that I am a third trough a React book, I ask myself the following question:
Am I putting too much energy on learning something that is not really close to my interests?
Throughout my studies, I found that I am mostly interested by maths and physics. I now find myself spending all my time learning a technology that is not close to any of the potential career paths that interest me (graphics programming, machine learning, physics simulations) just because I want to make my dumb maths project have a more practical aspect.
Am I wasting my time? Or is basic Web Dev a must for any kind of programmer?

2024.05.16 01:57 First_Ebb8532 Max rate through a power port

Hiiiiiiiiii nurses
I’m an infusion nurse and am wondering what everyone was taught as far as max rate through lines- whether it be a PIV, port, PICC, etc.
I was taught no more than 999 through ANY line, when adding up all the channels on the pump
I often walk around work and see more than 999 through. Example: a bag of chemo running at 676ml/hr but patient also needs a liter so that goes at 999ml/hr = 1675ml/hr pushing through the line.
input please considering that I work in an outpatient infusion center and not an ICU/ED (my patients are stable, for the most part) —- We have a patient who gets an infusion through a central line and their doctor “wrote an order” to say that we can concurrently run 2 liters of fluid together so they finish in 90 minutes. Wondering if you would feel comfortable with that with the knowledge and practice experience that you have?
Being groomed to never infuse >999 I personally don’t know how comfortable I feel with that.
Also any literature regarding max rates through lines whether from manufacturers website or anywhere else would be lovely!!

2024.05.16 01:56 echief Buggy is the one piece

Remember that when Oda started writing One Piece he had no idea how long the manga might last. It could be a short lived “unfinished story,” but it also could be a manga that lasted only 2-3 years where the creator is given notice they only have so much more time to wrap everything up. This never became an issue because one piece became so popular that Oda realized he could any details he wanted and complicate the overall story.
He may not have even had beyond a rough idea for things like the void century, ponoglyphs, Imu is revealed ridiculously late into the series. This is true of many manga/anime, but the the vast majority do not last longer than a couple years. The massive shonen successes are able to.
There are two examples I can think of. The first is Naruto, where kaguya is literally not revealed until the very, very end. Things like Itachis history, obitos first appearance, and Tobi’s identity could have been revealed much earlier if hype for Naruto dropped off.
Another example is full metal alchemist, where the entire series essentially ending up looping to the exact things that were presented in the first few chapters. Oda has very clearly known what the one piece is since the very beginning.
In my opinion there are two key factors to determining the one piece. The first is obviously the laughter. The second is that they were “20 years too early.” Most theories can only account for one of these, but not the other.
Many people will probably laugh at my theory and find it ridiculous, but that’s is part of the point. My theory is that the one piece is something like: a giant statue that looks almost exactly like Buggy. This plays into the theories that the one piece is a giant amusement park, or a party to throw for the whole world, or at least a party for the fish men.
A clown is the “character” of this amusement park. Like Mickey Mouse for Disneyland. This was so funny because Shanks and Buggy were the two members that were not able to actually see Laugh Tale. The crew member that was the most important was ironically the weakest and got left behind. Joyboy himself was a clown, or maybe his close friend was and they created this theme park together. Joyboy is Walt Disney. Buggy is Mickey Mouse. Or maybe even the reverse. Or maybe there’s a statue of the both of them. The giant straw hat taken from this theme park by Imu was worn by the statue(s)
The owner of the amusement park will be able to achieve unknown riches, if they desire. They can charge admission if they want to but neither will. Luffy and Buggy’s awakened fruits will both be required to truly access this amusement park, and probably to destroy reverse mountain as well, both giving all citizens of the world access to this park and creating the all blue. Within this park are the secrets of the void century and the will of D. The D is just a symbol of laughter, like this :D
Who are two of the first villains introduced? Buggy and Arlong. These are pretty clearly two characters that are planned from the very beginning. This plays into my amusement park/giant party theory being hinted at since the very beginning. The fishmen might be the first people to access the park, and all others will join the party over time.
Shanks eventually became aware that both Luffy and Buggy’s awakened fruits are required to achieve this, which is why he searched for Luffy’s fruit. He found it and thought he and Buggy would be the required pair, but it was actually Buggy and Luffy. The fact that these two “enemies” have to work together is ironic, even more funny. Shanks realized that Luffy is the new Joyboy of prophecy and sacrifices his arm and gives Luffy the hat
So this is kind of a combination of several theories like the amusement park/giant party. They were too early because Buggy had not awakened his devil fruit, and was unlikely to for a long time.
The series could end by all of these characters drinking sake together in the park, similar to what others suggesting the one piece is sake. Perhaps from a giant bottle held by the statue(s) or located somewhere towering in the park, like the castle at Disneyland. The one piece is buggy in “one piece,” being the clown of the amusement park instead of separating himself into separate parts. The final poneglyph says something like “have fun!” Or “laugh together!”

2024.05.16 01:53 Beautiful_Shine_2237 Iwtl struggling to understand and apply theories/concepts

Currently I’m a final year law student and I have always had a hard time understanding how to apply theories/concepts well. I noticed this issues during my A-level sociology class, I would score highly on essay that examined broad topics, such as education or the family. However, if I were to write solely a theoretical debate on functionalism vs Marxism on x I would score lowly. This has impacted me severely during law school, as articles are often written in an inaccessible manner, which I can work around, but coupled with also trying to understand the different theoretical perspectives it’s been a disaster. For example, I had an essay that required me to delve into theoretical debates on legal pluralism and legal centralism and I understand it, but taking it further to applying it is super hard. Whilst at the same time another essay within the same module on the a commission failing as a model for justice, I’m in my element and thriving. I’m able to build the essay whilst, reading first time round. Whereas for essay that require me to read theories, it has taken me a huge deal of time to be able to comfortably put pen to paper. For the latter the information, is a lot easier and quicker to understand. It makes me question if I could be a good lawyer.
Is there any way for me to get better at this or will I always be plagued by this. I would say I had general learning issue, but thriving with other essay I believe it’s specific to essay with theoretical concerns. I also struggled with property law and contract law. However, I was comfortable undertaking public law and tort.

2024.05.16 01:47 CosmicFaust11 Can someone explain what are the main different forms and types of epistemological scientism? (What are the differences between Rosenberg’s and Ladyman’s scientism?)

Hi everyone. I have recently become interested in the epistemological theory of scientism (or epistemological naturalism)? This position is the position and view that science and the scientific method are either the best or only way to render truth about the world or reality. Historically, this term has been used as a pejorative; however, some philosophers today seem to be adopting the position of scientism and using the term as a badge of honour. Two popular philosophers who have done this today include Alex Rosenberg and James Ladyman (along with Ross and Spurrett in ‘Everything Must Go’).
However, it appears that both of these philosophers conceive of their scientism as different from one another. For example, Rosenberg appears to dismiss metaphysics out-of-hand, while Ladyman appears to criticise current analytic metaphysics, but does not outright dismiss its value.
I was therefore wondering what are the main similarities and differences between Rosenberg’s form of scientism and Ladyman’s variation of scientism? Thanks 🙏.
BONUS: I believe Mario Bunge was a defender of scientism too. Therefore, if you want, I would not mind a discussion of his conception of scientism.

2024.05.16 01:45 rudexvirus [OT] Poetry Corner: Gravity

Welcome to Poetry Corner

Welcome to May!
We have entered the May flowers portion of spring. There certainly is a lot of pollen, but also a lot of rain where I am—Maryland is bouncing between hot and frigid, and I would say it needs to make up its mind, but…. We all know it won't.
However, I have made up my mind about this month's theme! And Im excited to get to it.
I had a suggestion a few weeks ago to include some sources for crit – I don’t have them ready now, but I will get some stuff together for you guys soon, I swear. I am always open to suggestions <3
Let’s face it: poetry is a strange land for many of us. What makes a poem? Does it have to rhyme? Follow a structure and meter? Does it have to be based in emotion? All these are great questions. Poetry comes in all forms and styles, rhyming and non-rhyming, metered and freeform. Some poems even tell a fictional story, like prose does! Some poems don't use any line breaks at all, and Prose-Poems can be tricky yet effective. I'll give you a nudge here to look into them and maybe try them out. Who knows, maybe a constraint is coming our way.
Each month, I provide you with a simple theme and an additional constraint to inspire you. You have 60 - 350 words to write a poem based on that theme. Poetry is often shorter than prose, so word choice is important. Less words mean each word does more. Be sure to read the entire post before submitting!

This Month’s Challenge

Theme: Gravity IP MP Bonus Constraints:
  • Lean into horror, either thematically or narratively.
Gravity, honestly, should be easy. The hardest part might be picking one direction over another.
The gravity of the earth? The gravity of your emotions? The pull of the deep ocean or the urge to explore the stars?
Its really up to you!
Need some help with some horror-themed poems? I got you! An elegy is a poem of serious reflection, and in English literature usually a lament for the dead.
I am encouraging the poets this week to stretch that definition of dead as well, especially since we did just do death last month! Examples:

2024.05.16 01:43 Gibbon-It-All-I-Got Tips for coming up with a magic system concept

A lot of people myself included can find it challenging to come up with ideas on what to base a magic system off of or what its core concept should be. However, in my own experience, Ive found that a core tenant of writing in general can remedy this issue. More specifically I'm talking about writing what you know. Though, in this case, I'd like to reframe it as writing what you like or what speaks to you. It could be a hobby or a niche interest of yours but regardless its a really good jumping-off point for making a system that's truly unique and your own. Another way to further personalize it is to dive even deeper and base the magic system around an aspect of that hobby or interest that draws you to it. For example in the magic system in Rebecca Kuang's "Babel", Kuang focuses the magic system around language but even more specifically translation and what can be lost between languages. So even if you come up with a magic system with a similar overall concept to another author you can still make it wholly unique by focusing it on another aspect of that same idea.
A massive bonus of this method is that it also makes coming up with the mechanics of the system really easy since you can base them on your preexisting knowledge of the hobby or topic you chose. For a hypothetical example say your interest is the theory aspect of music. You could have spells be melodies and aspects of them like their chords, time signature, or key, can influence their effects and properties. Building on that a limitation of this could be that the duration of this spell is based on the length of the melody so to use a force field spell you'd need to play a long looping melody for an extended period. I hope that this method can prove useful to other people struggling to come up with a concept for a magic system.

2024.05.16 01:43 Anonymous530s Weekly check ups vs declining weekly follow ups

Need a little feedback/advice, maybe half a rant. Got the good news a few days ago that my transfer was successful! This was my first transfer. This is my first pregnancy (that I know of). I've had my first two blood draws and there has been good fed back on my numbers (HCG etc). I've been scheduled for my first scan. In scheduling me, the nurse said "we just need to rule out an ectopic pregnancy so you have to come in as soon as possible." (I had IVF, maybe I'm misinformed but I'm not sure how I'd have an ectopic pregnance after the embryo was placed in my uterus.) While speaking to the nurse she metioned that moving forward I'd be scheduled for weekly follow ups until 11 weeks.
I know, from friends and family that they usually did anywhere from 4-6 week appointments during the first trimester through the OBGYN. I'm assuming that the reason that I'm being asked to come in more frequently was because it's a fertility clinic. My questions is, has anyone appearing to be in good health, with a health pregnancy declined to go that often?
A little background. I've struggled with professionalism and communication of the fertility facility. I only met my actual doctor 1x via virutal visit, just found out that my provider actually left the clinic though she continues to be listed on my forms. Some of the nurses I've come in contact with are QUITE nice. Other providers, have consistently put their foot in their mouths, attempted to gossip about other patients, have continuously confused me with another patient (who I later met). I've been sent the wrong medications.
To give a few examples:
Upon meeting with a specific person, they attempted, I guess to make small talk. I'm choosing to have children as a single parent. I've continuously been asked "how does you husband feel," "do you want to ask your husband before making this choice," and even told "I've seen your charts, the fertility issue isn't with you it's with your husband, you'll easily get pregnant." I stopped correcting them after I corrected this same person and they replied "so you are doing this alone? you know that babies take a lot of work, you sure you can do that? I hope you have supports it's not easy."
Then this morning, when going for my 2nd blood draw a provider came out asked how I was doing and commented loudly in front of other patients how sick I was during transfer. The provider went on to congradulate me on my pregnancy. I confirmed "yes," I was excited (we were in the waiting room). She then says, (seemingly distracted by unknown nurses coming through the room) " do you even want to be pregnant." The individual didn't feel I was excited enough by the news of the pregnancy. It absolutely took me by surprise. I stated my hesitation as I haven't managed to be pregnant before but I have an extensive family history on my maternal side of it being very difficult to get pregnant and stay pregnant. I stated most of my female cousins have had multiple miscarriages with a number of them only able to conceive after use of IVF. They waved me off and said "your numbers are really good, you'll be fine, how are you feeling." I mentioned I had been feeling on and off nausea for the last week. The provider mumble "it's still too early." They then excused themselves and drifted away to speak to someone else.
So, has anyone "graduated" themselves to an obgyn before the recommended 11 weeks? Or if you stayed with the fertility clinic have you declined their weekly follow up requests and gone less frequently?

2024.05.16 01:33 ConstructionNo7590 I think I'm starting a 'chuunbiyou' phase. Should I be worried?

If you don't know, chuunbiyou is just a Japanese idiom that translates directly to '8th grade illness'. It is a symptom that people in adolescence tend to go through. Basically, you have grandiose illusions and believe you are destined for glory or some god, or anything like that. It's worthy to note that people (including myself) in this phase tend to impersonate anime characters or fiction. It's a way of thinking that is that typical teenage ambition. I'm pretty sure I've started this phase of my life, since I checked all the boxes here. Since the background knowledge is out of the way, I'll get into how it is with me. I will provide as much information as possible so you can have a better idea of who I am and what this is.
I've always had a very overactive imagination. It's pretty annoying. For example, I'll be watching some show and my brain will constantly be trying to make another story based off of that. It often likes to combine two stories into one and have characters or plot elements play into my own version of the two. It sometimes even combines 3 stories, but that is quite rare. The main thing with my overactive imagination and '8th grade illness' is that my brain tends to make up some huge story and get itself immersed as much as it can with it. I will sometimes pace for up to an hour, just thinking. As you can imagine, it's fairly annoying to live with. I know I do this as an escape from reality since I don't see much that comes from the way things currently are for me. School is not very interesting and I don't feel happy settling down with one career. Basically, my brain wants to live in stories and wants to make reality more like those stories for an unknown reason to me. I've got two big theories about this, the first being that I want to make reality more interesting, and the second being that I want to become a character because I'm not happy with myself. If you have any other ideas as to why I may be doing this, please tell me in the comments.
The main character my brain tries to impersonate is L Lawliet from Death Note. I sit oddly like him and train my knees to be able to do that, I bite my nails, I've begun trying to think logically and be more intelligent to some success, I have a similar posture, I try to crawl like him in the two books, I am now trying to be nocturnal, I've started speaking in a monotone, I've become focused almost entirely on results, and I've overall had less interest in other people and being social. There are mountains of things to it, but those are the biggest things. I've had some benefit from doing this, otherwise I wouldn't continue doing it. As I've already stated, I now am just smarter and more focused on academics. I exercise more specifically to get good knees. There are upsides to this that I am very attracted to.
Obviously, I should stop being off the Earth in my imagination. I have made some efforts towards that with not much success. If you have any ideas for combatting that, do tell me what they are. But then, should I be worried about my impersonation of characters? I have a feeling I should, but at the same time, I want to keep it for its upsides. Summer is coming up, so I'll be bored out of my mind. My normal self wouldn't really suffice for that. I don't know what to do. Anything helps, and thanks for your time.

2024.05.16 01:29 Spiritual_Anybody554 I think I know what Drew is up to...

Here's a background of Drew Cane in case no one else knows but Drew and Jason were identical twins born to Alan Quartermaine and his mistress Susan Moore. Susan fled Port Charles for New York City to stay with her cousin, Heather Webber. Heather had Nurse Betsy Frank to care for Susan and found that she was carrying twins. Later after Susan died, Alan took one of the babies (Jason) home to the Quartermaines where he was raised. Drew, on the other hand, was raised by Betsy Frank along with Franco (Heather's son) as brothers. So my theory is that after all these years Jason was raised in a lavish lifestyle while Drew had to endure years of challenging events which leads me to believe that Drew is jealous of Jason and is plotting his revenge on the Quartermaines, through using Michael, Willow, Nina and Carly. What do y'all think?

2024.05.16 00:57 wtfmolls Companion death discussion…

Something I feel nowhone really talks about after the companions die is how sad it really is. I feel like alot of the time people forget that the companions have lives outside of the doctor. Take Amy and Rory for example they had pretty much just gotten married when they died Rory had just committed to being a full time nurse and Amy just agreed to being a bridesmaid. They had lives, friends and family that are just forgotten about. Brian (Rory’s dad) just gave the doctor the approval to have them travelling with him if he kept them safe. Unfortunately this was at the end of the episode right before their death. Since we only ever really see them with the doctor I think we tend to forgot that they also had lives and people that are going to grieve them and if you think about it it could only ever be the doctor that has to inform everyone that they are dead and he couldn’t protect them and that the presence of Amy and Rory will be missed deeply in their lives outside of the doctor!
Clara and bill also. Clara was a teacher at a school and she clearly cared for her students (like Courtney) and she also had family that would miss her but this is often forgotten about as we rarely see it. They all had people that would GRIEVE them but we the audience are never present for the aftermath of their deaths in any other form than the doctors.
(P.S I wanted to mention bill but I’m currently rewatching and can’t remember anything about her era really :( )
Also extra question what companion death hit you the hardest out of all of them?
EDIT:nevermind just found out bill is actually alive (not watched her season in a while incase you couldn’t tell)

2024.05.16 00:46 TMarace Curious about how prehospital emergency medicine is handled in your country/area? Spain 🇪🇸 example given.

Hello everyone,
Here's an family physician from Spain who has been working in pre-hospital emergency medicine for almost a decade now. I’m curious about how emergency care is organized in your area. Let me explain:
I love reading the cases, anecdotes, and stories on this subreddit, but often I don't understand the structure you work under, as there are categories that don't exist in my area or at least don't perform the same functions: paramedics, EMTs, NREMT... Recently, someone shared an article stating that in 48 states of the USA, it wasn't mandatory to have a physician in the emergency room, which is unthinkable here (mainly because of legal repercussions).
So, let me explain how things work in my area, in the pre-hospital setting.
Keep in mind that emergency care is centralized, as in Spain the healthcare system is public, the percentage of users with private healthcare is very low, and they usually don't offer emergency services (let alone ambulances).
Pre-hospital emergency care is divided into Puntos Fijos, which are primary care centers equipped with very few resources: a short treatment room (nebulization, oxygen therapy...), a critical care room with everything needed in case of cardiac arrest (defibrillator, respirator, medication), a nursing consultation room (dressings, injectables...), and medical consultations (some centers have ultrasound). In these centers, users come on their own with any type of urgent demand (according to their criteria, of course) and are attended by the doctor, and the nurse if needed.
Then there are the mobile teams: ambulances.
Calls come in through the 061 phone line, and in the coordination room, they are assigned a priority and a resource. In the room, there is always a physician (who is the final responsible of the assignment) and depending on its size, a greater or lesser number of case managers (telephonists).
There are three different types of ambulances: * Advanced Life Support Ambulances: dispatched for priorities 1, 2, and sometimes 3, where the patient may require medical intervention. The team is formed by: * Emergency Medical Technicians whose job is driving, mobilizing and immobilizing the patient, performing cardiac massage during CPR... * Nurses: vein cannulation, administration of treatments, performing diagnostic tests, techniques such as catheterization, aspiration, gastric lavage... * Physicians: final responsibility for decisions and medications to be used, airway management, interventional techniques (central vein catheterization, thoracentesis...) * Advanced Care Teams: comprised of an EMT and a nurse. They assist (suppose) non-critical conditions, may dispense medication upon telephonic medical order. * Conventional Ambulances: staffed by an EMT, used for stable patient transport, supporting ALS ambulances if needed. They cannot administer medication or treatments.
This is a rough vision of how it is organized, there are several different units with different equipment and ambulances, some other ambulances that cover the urgent or emergent transport between hospitals…
How does all of this work in your country/area? For example, here it's unthinkable for an EMT or a nurse to decide on treatment without a physician's decision, and the paramedic role doesn't exist.
I would love to hear your opinions and experiences. How is emergency medical care organized in your country or local area? Are there particular aspects that you consider unique or interesting compared to other places? Feel free to share your ideas!

2024.05.16 00:39 Few_Possibility_2915 The issue with DC fans and haters

Ok so today we have quite the topic, today I'll be going over why DC fans and haters are the absolute worst scaling fandom online (if you are name dropped don't take it personally, this is just to outline the issues airh the fandom)
First we will talk about DC haters
DC Haters strawman, appeal to people and don't read
Ok so this is the first big issue but there are hundreds of discussions I've had with DC haters where they genuinely don't argue in good faith one discussion I had was about the overvoid where a person legit took what I said to mean "I swear, you'll do anything to downplay Lucifer and the Presence because you want Monitor-Mind to be supreme." Which the day before I said the opposite and said who I actually think the supreme beings are
Another issue is DC fans appealing to almost any source they can the same guy once used the DC wiki as a source of information in a debate as if a fucking wiki is a valid source for powerscaling over the COMIC'S
The last issue for DC haters is they don't read 😭 you have people like profectus who explicitly don't read DC comics (or if he does he has major confirmation bias since he admitted to purposefully looking for reasons to downgrade it) and have to rely on strawman arguments or even using appeals just because they Never read (the same person doubled so far down they ADMITTED they don't see appealing to authority as a fallacy)
Now onto DC fans
DC fans wank DC and shit on anything not DC if it doesn't scale as high
DC fans are basically db fans but slightly worse because DC fans somehow care even less about what's valid and will argue anything even if they don't believe it, a good example is DC fans arguing "regular humans in DC are outerversal" which blatantly isn't true under any means by any standard, so much so actual DC fans laugh at it and the haters or DC, then you have heralds at outer now, under some AMPS this notion is true (parallax and spectre Hal, anti crisis wonder woman etc) but definitely not the base form
DC fans hate everything else
Ok now this is an issue slightly unrelated to scaling but it's a genuine critique, DC fans hate everything not dc, a good example was a person I know hating everything besides fucking superman and saying superman beats everyone at complete random (which is annoying and a showing of how little they care about accuracy or how close they are to it) since superman can't even beat everyone in DC let alone the all of fiction
All in all the majority of the DC scaling fandom (lovers and haters) are trash and need to get their shit together (don't get me wrong not every DC fan is bad just a majority of the ones who scale)

2024.05.16 00:36 stace_m8 In defense of an Eddie coming out realisation (yes, he's really that clueless)

So, in recent weeks I'm sure we've all seen the speculation and theories regarding whether Eddie could be gay, in the closet etc. And while most of those theories tend to be fueled by Buddie shippers (which lowkey me too 👀), many outside of that group don't seem to see where the character analysis is coming from, but I have another perspective to add. I've just done another full rewatch and noticed a very common trend with Eddie over the show, how easily led he is by others. Many times Eddie will have some decision to make, feelings to decipher, and almost always he is shown to be very uncertain or confused, but after speaking with someone who either tells him what to do or how to feel he suddenly and immediately jumps on board with that decision.
For example, in s4 when he starts dating Ana, despite showing a slight interest he never made the effort to reach out, but as soon as the 118 and Bobby push him to call her, he does so then starts dating her. However, when Carla returns she asks him "are you following your heart or Christopher's" to which Eddie has an immediate 180 flip and starts feeling turned away from Ana. He did the same with dating Marisol at the end of s6, he never mentioned her at all then immediately calls her for a date when prompted to do so.
Obviously, this can be chalked up to bad writing, or just how he's written, to be very easily led, but that still has an impact on his overall character, so from a viewer's perspective I don't think it's a wild leap to jump from 'Eddie just goes along with what people tell him to do' to 'there are deeper social/cultural reasons for that'. Either way, let me know what you think but it's just an interesting thing I noticed about the way his character is often written, never makes big decisions until told what to do (usually in a big heart to heart speech where someone talks at him about his feelings) and he has a tendency to do a 180 flip the second someone says anything to the contrary
