August 2004
There's a pretty dreamlike vibe to it. Upon returning from Day 1 and Day 2, I noticed an unexpected abundance of emo people. Practically everyone wears a live strong bracelet. there has been a significant drop in the number of Eminem-themed clothing items and locker posters. I still see lip smackers. People are still in Sam Goody shopping for CDs at the mall. I get a Nintendo Gamecube and could not be more happier.
September 2004
On MTV, all you hear every morning is Green Day and Ciara. There's this weird challenge where you have to snort smart candies. I'm not sure why this was a thing. I sneak into Resident Evil Apocalypse and leave early because it's a school night and it's 12:30. Many students in class have an irrational obsession with Ryan Cabrera. It's really cold outside. It seems like hoodies are in style right now on everyone. A student fights my science teacher and knocks him out with a bat. He goes flying out the door like Super Mario Bros 3. We all have to do these therapy circles to discuss what we saw and "process" it. DSL is blowing up and hardly anyone I know is using dial up anymore. Tons of MCR clone looking people walking the hallway rn.
October 2004
Big scandal at school results in the dismissal of my principle. He gets punched in the face by a pupil in front of the school assembly. The Ashlee Simpson fiasco from Saturday Night Live is constantly played. Everyone is talking exclusively about it. I sneak in to watch the Taxi movie. "TAXI" is the worst movie I've ever seen, guys. In this, Jimmy Fallon was atrocious. People beg me to add them on MySpace at random. All of a sudden, Myspace becomes extremely popular. I utilize my computer class to learn the proper way to apply HTML code. I almost get kicked out for sneaking into Shark Tale. "Talking about the CAR WASHHHHHH" Those ushers at the cinema were so clueless.
Tons of house parties start popping up in bulletins on Myspace and I start discovering what the Grey goose is very quickly. Blue camera flip phones are all the rage right now. Students taking pictures of teachers is a thing. GTA San Andreas and Halo 2 both come out. People are obsessed talking about it @ lunch every single day. Someone broke into Blockbuster video and attempted to steal a bunch of them. Tons of people in study hall talking about Dragon Ball again due to GT Shadow dragon saga kicking up. I start dating this guy that works at the strip mall and looks like Vin Diesel. They won't stop playing Maroon 5 "Will be loved" on the radio. MAKE IT STOP GUYS. Halloween party at this mansion. A bunch of streakers show up and get the whole party shut down when the neighbors are caught snooping. Bunch of people get arrested as well. My school starts adding Wifi to the building.
November 2004
We do a mock election in class. Almost everyone votes for Kerry. That Mosh song from Eminem is everyone's ring tone. Bush wins and pisses everyone off. Nintendo DS comes out. Initially I hate it. I go with my friend to Best Buy at the mall to pick one up. T-Mobile sidekick phones start blowing up. I break up with Vin Diesel guy and start dating this guy Dak from a town over. Tons of Nightmare before Christmas stuff being sold at Hot Topic now. That stupid Nelly/Tim McGraw song won't get off my TV guys...Over and over and over and over and over again. Smackdown vs Raw comes out for PS2 and we are going crazy playing it. Carson Daly is back hosting MTV TRL for the time being. I get a black Dell PC at Circuit City and it is so fast guys! Literally winged hair cuts are everywhere right now.
December 2004
Myspace is banned from the school computers. We start using proxy sites but they find out about those as well lol. Tanning salons start popping off hard. Literally 5 new tanning salons appear in my town. Everyone looking orange as hell. People in class won't shut up about Laguna Beach and One Tree Hill. I give up and end up watching it. NYE party was so insane. It was basically hosted on top of a roof top. I remember everything was Ice related. Like the stairs and floor looked like ice.
January 2005
Dak accuses me of cheating during a heated argument we have on AOL Aim, even though I was actually asleep at home. Apparently, I was set up by a jealous friend of mine who couldn't stand to watch him with someone else. My cousin invites me to WWE Raw. I end up screaming at Batista and I ask Randy Orton for his number at ringside.
February 2005
Huge Super bowl party fiasco. Rival foot ball team from a town over crashes the party. They kick down the door and start beating the crap out everyone. Police come an arrest half the people. 80s week at school. Everyone dressing like it's 1985!
March 2005
50 Cent's new album comes out and has people skipping school. I never want to hear candy shop ever again. Dudes in the hallway with Drop it like it's hot as their ring tone. I get a PSP and I am blown away. Literally PS2 graphics on a handheld. DESKTOP quality browser as well...WHAT? Yeah I kind of stop using my laptop for a bit because of this lol.
April 2005
I play a prank on everyone that I am moving and that this week will be my last day of school. Literally everyone believes it. I never hear the end of it...people were PISSED. They had all signed my backpack and everything lol.

Hype for Star Wars Episode III is at a fever pitch. People dressing up like Darth vader to class...idiots...lol. We Belong Together by Mariah Carey is literally played on the school speaker every single morning....make it stop guys! The school secretary was a huge Mariah fan if you couldn't tell. Stupid people putting their away message on aim to "this ish is bananas". I start using MSN messenger heavily right now. You can SEND PICTURES AND DO VIDEO WHAT?

Tons of Batman shirts coming out of the woodwork due to Batman Begins. A kid from class falls through the roof of the school and glass shatters everywhere in my health class. On some Mission Impossible ish. He ends up getting suspended for 3 days and we all laugh about it. We do a school prank where we glue all the textbooks to the floor. My friend Camille starts singing at the dance and embarrassed herself by throwing up all over her rented dress.

P/E is only one indicator and it has to compare with its peers in the same industry, but I bought Apple in COVID start basically at a price lower than half of current price. Based on Apple's current market cap, if it drops to my purchase price that would mean the US stock market total index drop around the same like 40% that would be a very low possibility. A very important thing is not buy stock purely on PE, PE is only one factor. I have actually 20 factors myself summarized for many years, one of which is cash flow which is another important factor to consider, if you see FB and Paypal drop that is because the expected cash flow is lower due to their business is not stronger than pervious, whereas APPLE still makes tons of money and cash flow is very strong. Of course, I'm not suggesting buy now but in my post, you would find I've actually put my suggestion when to buy the dip which would be after the hiking of rate.

If you adjust for metaverse losses over past year, they're trading below 13 PE. At that valuation I'm taking a look. Even if their ads growth stalls/ falls and their margins deteriorate in the future, they're still printing money for now. Go look at the chart/ read articles about appl in 2016. Any big tech in 01, any company in 08. Im not saying FB is appl by any means. But investors get impatient and pessimistic when yesterday's growth darlings have to pivot and evolve. Is FB (meta) really too big to fail? I’m sure I’m moderately older than a lot of Redditors, but I’m in my mid 30s. I haven’t had a FB since I left junior college. If I were you I would put more in ETFs then in 2 years or so once you've accumulated experience buying stocks, researching stocks and going through volatility, then allocate a more significant % to individual stocks. story of my life when I try to day trade. you have to be faster on the trigger taking profits. Buy the put with the plan "I think FB fall past Y to X. I sell at X, but if it doesn't fall past Y I sell. Once I'm at x% profit I sell when it falls to .5x% My stop loss is 30% or whatever" It really helped me to build discipline by actually writing the list of rules down on paper when I did the trade then following them no matter what. You don't keep runners if you don't have enough contracts to sell a bunch first. The hardest part is selling when things look like they're going your way, but you will in the long run do better following the rules with tons of 40-50% gains than chasing that 4000% gain.

Hmm. Tough question. My advice is pick your growth stocks you believe in FIRST. Mine are FB and MSFT. Invest in these regularly and watch their ebbs and flow. For me MSFT has been gradually rising and FB is more volatile, so when FB spikes I sell a portion like 20% of it or so because people hate FB—-so you can expect a drop later. I then invest all that extra cash I’ve made into dividend stocks or exploratory stocks (aka DIS, JNJ, JOBY) So yeah. My strategy now is…I had planned on adding slowly more to MSFT this year but then FB dropped so much so I feel kind of stuck to it again bc historically it has generated me the most cash. So I’m planning to go hard on FB and will sell at the next large jump to invest elsewhere and pick up some stable MSFT and more JNJ/DIS. Not sure if that’s all correct but it has worked for me thus far.

Even if u look at their currently massively discounted market cap of 550 billion, they make a NET income of 40 billion a year and growing (albeit slower than previously projected which is part of the freak out). They are investing 25% of the profit (~10 billion) into the metaverse. That’s something I am comfortable with given that they are going to achieve a monopoly on an opportunity that eats into MANY sectors. Even if the metaverse fails on 90% of these sectors, the gain on the other 10% will be astronomical. For example, gaming. Imagine they take even 10% of TAM for this. The gaming market is almost generating 200 billion a year at the moment with ~10% CAGR. That will be ~315 billion in 2027 and that 10% TAM, which I believe is a conservative estimate, is worth 30 billion for FB. Seems reasonable to me. Not to mention the billions of users for Facebook, instagram, and what’s app that generate continuous revenue. Don’t be fooled by the sheep saying that it is the next My Space or worried about Tik Tok.. Meta is too versatile and sticky of a business to have this current valuation justified.

Of the three here, INTC is the least certain imo. Simply because it requires Pat’s goals to be met without fail to start realizing a 10% growth rate by 2025 - Pat’s words. BABA and FB on the other hand will grow here and now and are beaten down for irrational reasons. I disagree with FB for a number of reasons. I don’t believe in the metaverse. I’m gen z too…not some boomer who hates technology. I don’t think the metaverse will take off. If you haven't used VR it's worth a look. I was skeptical but truthfully it's pretty compelling. It's very immersive and kind of addictive. A time will come where people watch concerts in VR, you can already watch NBA highlights and I think some games. Any live event can be in VR in theory. Classes. Can't afford to go Europe? There will be VR tours. Having a centralized platform (metaverse) to tie all these things together seems pretty obvious to me. Calling it web 3.0 or whatver is pretty accurate imo. Now you can ask if FB can execute and make it happen and will the ROI be there. I disagree with FB for a number of reasons. I don’t believe in the metaverse. I’m gen z too…not some boomer who hates technology. I don’t think the metaverse will take off. Not only do I not find it fun/stimulating, but using a VR headset makes me motion sick. Other people I’ve spoken with seem to agree. They’ve tarnished their name with poor business practices and their primary moneymaker, Facebook, is losing engagement every day.

If you haven't used VR it's worth a look. I was skeptical but truthfully it's pretty compelling. It's very immersive and kind of addictive. A time will come where people watch concerts in VR, you can already watch NBA highlights and I think some games. Any live event can be in VR in theory. Classes. Can't afford to go Europe? There will be VR tours. Having a centralized platform (metaverse) to tie all these things together seems pretty obvious to me. Calling it web 3.0 or whatver is pretty accurate imo. Now you can ask if FB can execute and make it happen and will the ROI be there. But people have literally been asking this about FB since day 1 when social media was in its infancy and later when FB pivoted late to mobile. Yet here we are 3 billion users later. I disagree with OP. I genuinely think FB is a value trap and the CCP has frequently shown that they think nothing of fintech/tech retail. So BABA’s risk is not priced in yet. true you never know. Can only look at the indicators. And bottom does not just mean the lowest price it's ever hit - it's the price at which momentum upward begins. Often you see the price blow past the bottom and come back to it. Not saying the price can't hit 70 here - saying this looks like where the bottom settles. As for NFLX, PYPL, SQ, those were wildly overvalued with bad growth/cost stories for the future. I don't see that as apples to apples. We're talking about a P/E of 8 here and actual cash flow. FB and BABA have their own separate troubles with Apple and China, respectively. The market is screaming it wants value companies but I'm not going to chase up commodity prices only to see them drop just as fast, so what's a safe Value stock right now? I think it is CROX. This is exactly right. Liquidity dries up everywhere when borrowing becomes more expensive. Investors and companies are more careful (as they should be) so risky investments get hit the hardest. Institutions go liquid when the fed puts the squeeze which everyone is looking for right now. It will rebound months from now after corrections to the stock market. Tesla, FB, etc have all been overpriced for a while especially as regulations start normalizing in favor of user privacy worldwide/a lot of these stocks have been pumped through the continuous new users jumping on board. I remember opening my wii for Christmas back in 2008 and having better graphics than horizon world. Not a bear or a bull, but as a gamer I’m not very interested. I can get advertisements on pc/ console AND play with friends on games that are infinitely cooler than these. Quest 2 is OKAY but already available on any platform I believe it’s called hotshot or something. I may be missing the point of this meta verse thing, but until they come out with a product that isn’t a five pound helmet with the processing power of a wii, I’ll stick to my pc and Xbox. PYPL is extremely undervalued. It's pretty much the definition of the kind of stock the market hates right now. Fintech, growth tech, retail favourite, COVID play and just released disappointing earnings. The problem with PYPL is that extreme negative sentiment like this doesn't change over night. Stocks this hated can trade far far below fair value in the same way stocks that are loved (like PYPL a couple of years back) can trade far in excess of fair value. The same thing is happening with FB right now. It's obviously undervalued, but that doesn't mean it's going higher anytime soon. It's not a bad buy here though. Sentiment will change eventually and PYPL will likely see a nice pop when that happens, but that could be years of trading at a discount to fair value. PYPL isn't the best company in the world but it's a good company, operating in a growing sector of the economy which is likely to sustain double digit growth rates for years to come. It's been around for decades at this point and it's not going anywhere soon which makes it a relatively safe investment long-term with attractive upside should sentiment change, but short-term who knows what's going to happen. It could still fall another 20-30% if the market continues to pullback. Just be careful in this market. People thought FB was a bargain before it collapsed another 25-30%. Pick their entry points carefully and don't put all your money in at once.

I'm not bullish on the metaverse, but I'm hesitant to count it out. Facebook wasn't the first social media platform, but they were the "last mover" for 15 years. They took what myspace and others did and improved on it. I think metaverse could work, based on the failings of Second Life and others like it. If it was the first time anybody tried it, I think it would fail spectacularly. The fact they've seen many game worlds pop up and make money and innovate in different ways, and VR headsets are even going into their 2nd and 3rd generation of designs, metaverse could catch on. I think, if they do it right, it could become a great platform for VR programs, but so much could go wrong. I have never held FB and don't plan on buying, I'm just not quite as skeptical about the metaverse, or convinced it will fail.

So anyways, I have no idea how these repentance meetings work, but I read something where they "investigate." I don't know what that means, but if they "investigate" Jodi's confession, would that in anyway get back to Travis' bishop? Something that constantly comes up in FIRE forums on Reddit/FB etc is people asking for advice on their current or proposed portfolio. Sometimes this will be a fairly standard mix of 50% Aussie shares and 50% Intl shares or somewhere around that at least, and other times it’s 50% US stocks, 30% tech stocks, 20% cryptocurrencies.
So why is it that there are so many of the second type of portfolios being asked about at the moment? And what sort of asset allocation should you have?

It’s different this time!
Pretty much everyone has heard the saying that past performance is not an indicator of future performance. And yet it seems to be human nature that a lot of us ignore that and just assume that because something has had tremendous performance in the past, that will happen in the future as well.
I’m old enough that I was working in finance during the tech boom and bust around the turn of the century. And in the leadup to that we saw pretty much exactly the same behaviour as we are seeing again now with lots of money going into hot companies and the tech sector as a whole.
Valuations were irrelevant, every tech company was going to be next big thing, every non-tech company was talking about how it was going to pivot to become more of a tech company. And then oops, the Nasdaq went from 5,000 down to just over 1,000 at the lows. Australia didn’t experience this nearly as badly as the US, mostly because there wasn’t (and still isn’t) much of a tech sector here, but it still hit a lot of people’s portfolios hard.
Looking at the current market favourite FANMAG stocks (Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and Google, they’re all at pretty much all time high prices for their stock prices. I think that they all have much better businesses than what we were seeing back in the early 2000s, but hey I’m also well and truly old enough to remember MySpace being bigger than Facebook.
Speaking of the early 2000s two of the giants from that era, Yahoo and AOL, just got sold to a private equity fund for roughly 1% of their peak values. Please note I am not saying that this will happen to any of the FANMAG stocks or any other tech stocks, just that there are plenty of former market darlings that are worth a lot less than they used to be and there are no guarantees this won’t happen to any of the current set.
American Exceptionalism
A large part of the reason so many people want to invest in the US is that it has a much larger exposure to tech stocks than most of the rest of the world, with almost all of the major software stocks being based and/or listed in the US.
It’s had much better performance on a comparative basis since the GFC thanks to that higher tech exposure and lower cyclical exposure as shown in the chart below from JP Morgan AM.
The below chart shows the period of US outperformance compared to the rest of the world over time, and you can see that it’s done massively better for the last 12 years or so.

So between tech companies having a fantastic 10 years and the US having a much larger exposure to tech than most other major markets, people look at those two potential investments and decide that given they’ve had great past performance which is likely to go on into the future.
It’s possible of course that this will be the case, I have no idea what will happen to stocks, countries, sectors or anything else in the future. I’ve been wrong about plenty of investment ideas in the past, amongst these residential property and crypto, and it’s entirely likely I will be wrong multiple times again at various times.
But there is also the possibility that investors will decide that there are limits to how much tech companies can grow their earnings, that new companies may displace them, that other sectors and regions may start seeing more growth etc. It’s generally a pretty good idea to not have all your eggs in one basket.
You are not your portfolio
When your portfolio is made up almost exclusively of one type of asset, and in particular one specific asset, there is the risk that your identity gets caught up in that.
I make no secret of the fact that I prefer shares to the other major asset classes, but I acknowledge that there are tradeoffs to it and I don’t kid myself that shares don’t have downsides. I also have exposure via the various ETFs that I own to probably at least 1,500 or so different companies so I don’t really care about any one company in particular.
I do own two individual stocks which between them make up about 3-4% of the overall portfolio (I’m including the amounts owned in ETFs/super here), but as much as I would obviously like to see them do well it doesn’t really move the needle one way or another for me.
However if you have most of your money tied up in one asset class or even moreso if it’s just one asset, well that might be a different story according to this article.
But if you have a very large percentage of your net worth invested in one particular asset class or individual asset, well it’s going to dominate your portfolio and also potentially your life. According to this survey “About 25% of those who’ve invested 10% or less of their net worth into crypto say that they’ve seen a negative impact on their personal relationships, according to the survey, which was done with 1,033 Americans and balanced by age and gender. That number rises to 73% for those who’ve invested 10%-25% of their net worth, 94% for those who’ve invested 50%-75% of net worth -- and 100% for those who’ve invested 75% or more of their net worth.”
Well yeah, I can see that if you have a big chunk of your net worth in one asset that has fallen 20% or more 3 times in 2021 alone, it might affect your mood and thus your relationship! Particularly given that the gain in your net worth almost all came in the last 6 months, and it’s by no means certain that those gains will remain.
So what overall asset allocation should you have?
There is no one size fits all answer to this. I know that some people at least on Reddit or the various Australian FIRE FB groups will push for an all equities portfolio which is why I’ve previously written about not having all your money in equities, and in particular Australian equities.
It’s easy to think that you’re going to be cool calm and collected if the stockmarket drops 50% and your investments get cut in half. And if you’re early into your FIRE journey and have $50k invested which is half your annual salary or so, there’s actually a reasonable chance you will be. But when you get to having much larger amounts invested which are multiples of your salary and very large dollar amounts, it’s a lot harder to stay cool.
During the Coronavirus crash last year our portfolio dropped by a six figure amount which was multiples of my annual salary. Let me tell you, that is not a fun experience! Given the stock market experiences 20% drops every 5 to 7 years, I would expect that there will be at least a couple more of these before we reach FIRE, and then a bunch thereafter given we will hopefully be around for quite some time. It’d be nice to think that we’ll get used to them, but I suspect that it’ll still be at least somewhat stressful each and every time.
Realistically it’s likely that at some point in our lives the value of our portfolio will go down by a million dollars or more. That won’t be fun, although I guess maybe it’ll be something to talk about at barbecues? I’ve written before about what a bear market feels like, and how you think you’ll feel and how you actually feel can be two very different things.
When you look at how you want to invest, you want to be bearing those future falls in mind and how you will react to the,. Typically that means having at least some of your money in safe investments like cash or term deposits or bonds so that you know that at part of your portfolio is going to hold steady when everything else is crashing.
Personally I think anywhere between 10% to 30% of your portfolio should be in defensive assets, with this likely increasing in dollar terms as you get closer to retirement but probably lower in percentage terms of the overall portfolio.
Not co-incidentally this is what has historically worked out as being optimal for a successful retirement as per my own work and that of Dan at Ordinary Dollar, and has a lot less volatility than an all equities portfolio.

Hi Reddit, I know you don't always like my advice but I'm here with my hat in my hand.
My grade 11&12 girlfriend died several months ago (not even sure precisely) and her asshole conservative McDonald's eating pickup driving idgaf about anyone but myself husband never let me know. We were dating at the end of school and never really broke up. I went to another city to University and we always kept in contact.
He knocked her up the first time they had sex. They got married just before the baby and since had two more. Their third kid died early and it was me she turned to because he was a man-child and no help. That was nearly 20 years ago so it was a lot of phone calls (not emails or FaceBook messages) and her husband clearly hated me for it. Maybe he thought she was cheating on him with me.
Anyway, not to go on forever but we exchanged birthday cards, pictures of our kids and were Tribe(lol wat), MySpace & FaceBook freinds. He knew we were freinds and he would know how to get a hold of me for sure. I'm not a hard guy to find IRL. If I hadn't quit FaceBook 6 or 7 years ago I probably would have found out that way which I'm sure would suck too but at least I would have known.
Maybe I'm being selfish but I want to contact him and find out what happened. I want to know if the kids are messed up over it. Am I crazy to try and find them on FaceBook (I can't), should I just show up at theihis house?

The Jay Electronica Enigma solved
This theory took me awhile to compile after reading all the wrong ones online (though this is just my theory) i thought it be perfect to reveal this since today is the last day of the Jay Electronica tour in his own city of New Orleans. This will be very in depth and some stuff might be familiar but some shit is just really an in depth analysis from my perspective. So the purpose of this theory is not to talk about Act 2 though i will talk about it but it's more of what the enigmatic figure of Jay Electronica is.Basically i am going to answer what the fuck is a Jay Electronica spoiler alert hes a God/prophet.
So first Act I, the mythical album released on myspace. The problem was no one ever made the connection between the album itself and the movie. This theory relies on my own interpretation of the movie and its not just about the deletion of memories but the movie was interpreted as consciousness for Jay Electronica. If you watch the movie the connection of consciousness is very clear. Spoiler Alerts for the movie ahead so watch it first. So let's talk about what the movie represents well it's about consciousness and death. The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is basically just another way of saying ignorance is bliss. As in people who ignore the problems and the real consciousness of the world have eternal sunshine or happiness because they have no clue what is happening. In the movie itself i got the idea about it being about consciousness when Joel goes into the dream and they start deleting memories and he becomes self-aware that his memories are being deleted. And just as someone who realises they are gonna die and try to savour every moment that was good that is what Joel was doing when he started to realize how stupid it was to delete all his memories. He's fighting against the inevitable, the deletion of his memories or what can be interpreted as death. But when he accepts what is happening things start to go more smoothly and right at the end before he wakes clementine whispers a message into his ear, which she says montauk. But i think this can also be like being born with the message of god whatever it might be to you. That's why when he woke up he had the feeling to go to montauk. Now this where the theory goes more into depth. In the movie there was 2 scenes where Joel literally became woke mid sleep. He saw the world around him and was awake which shows his consciousness broke through the barrier. And inside his memories he started to control them and got off the ‘map’ .What was happening and was literally living another life as if the ending was death and that was what he was avoiding. The second moment where he was tearing up was crazy because it was similar to what people say is a near death experience where u start dreaming and go into the deep realms of your consciousness but instead he woke up into the reality where those nerds were erasing his memories. Now i also believe that because Joel was controlling his consciousness he put into effect him getting back together with clementine. First he's hearing his surroundings and knows patrick is being a fuck but because he goes off the map the main doctor had to come and shit hit the fan with him coming and Mary. This was all because while Joel was in a sleep state his actions in his own mind affected the reality he was escaping from. So Joel was another woke level. Also what was crazy is he created new universes like the one where in a weird way he became sexually fixated on clementine as a little kid when she shows her crotch so he not only was in his own consciousness but was creating new realities in his mind. It was a DMT trip on another level.
Now how does Electronica fit in this whole story, well let's take the intro
Just blaze has a recording talking about Jay and so does Erykah the exact same way Joel and Clementine get their recordings at the end talking about each other. Just blaze's recording focuses more on the musical aspect of Jay while Erykah talks about the love sorta like the clementine to Jays, Joel. Also Joel means god or Jehovah is god while clementine means mercy so this works in relation with all the shit that Jay spits. Clementine is almost the mercy of life relieving the burden of death. So The first part of the album where he first starts rapping is his claim for the throne in hip-hop and just Jay electronica being Jay electronica on a track, killing all the bars. The sample also coincides in the movie when Joel is happy and theirs love. If you notice the samples are not in chronological order in the movie so this choice to use different moods was very conscious. So Jay is just showing love he's introducing himself to the hip-hop world and this is sort of the reply to Just blazes tape recording. Then in he broke the rules i believe he's referring to him being one of the greats as just blaze mentions in the intro. He didnt take the regular path but instead is coming at this in such a different way that no one has ever seen before and didn't sign over all rights and privileges (i.e signing his soul) and broke the rules to be the greatest. Then the song itself the sample comes from the scene Joel is gathering all the items of Clementine to forget her. This mirrors Erykah and Jay and goes in depth with references from the movie in the verse itself. This track addresses the recording of Erykah in the intro. Then Voodoo man is literally the announcement of the prophet. He talks about having dreams with the christ and then is told to convey messages with the mic as his way of preaching. The intro sample with the refugee kids is almost like the unveiling of ignorance and why a prophet is needed. Because society is asleep terrible shit is happening to kids in other parts of the world but Jay the prophet is here to bring consciousness and guidance to the (85%). This sample in the movie is also when Joel purposely tries to become ignorant to avoid the feeling of sadness when he first reads the card saying clementine had Joel erased from her memory. Then in the last track FYI the sample comes from the scene where Joel frees his consciousness and strats existing in different parts of the map. He revisits many of his memories growing up now with clementine there which to me was the life he had envisioned and his conscious effort to live in a universe where he had control came to pass. And in the song itself Jay literally starts giving eye opening facts to “wake” the listener and is speaking “for your information”.
Now the album was artistically beautiful and had many layers to it and was just deep asf. But what do we know about Jay well he's a conscious rapper his views on god and religion are that it don't matter we are all our own gods and conscious beings and a religion is just a label. He alludes to having done DMT and for the sake of this theory i believe he has done DMT. Anyone who is aware what DMT is or what it can do would understand that by proxy of doing DMT Jay is on a level beyond us where his consciousness exists in a reality we can't even comprehend. Jay is a conscious rapper at the end of the day trying to “kill lucifer”. Jay is a champion of consciousness and being a poor righteous teacher and the whole idea of the prestige fits into this because. Jay is waiting for the people to become conscious enough to understand wtf is going on. First of all like 6 songs have been released from Act 2. We have more minutes of music from act 2 then we do of act 1. How can people say he hasn't released his album. Jay has released from the album tracklist:

Now the whole prestige thing the way that fits into this is obvious asf. We want to be fooled we want to think their is a grand enigma but like Borden in the movie who just had a twin the solution is simple. The clues were there we just didn't look at them. Same with Act 2, we never properly looked at Jay and the music that was slowly coming out and what he was doing and missed out on all this shit he was sharing. No one was looking for the music he was sharing everyone sat on Exhibit C and that was it no one looked into his Act I or his mixtapes and features and other works. Or even his secret youtube channel. We see you Mr. Flowers. The trick he's doing is bringing his career back but what is there to bring. He just needs to release 9 songs and we have the complete album but that's not what its about. We as a hip hop community and just a human species need to uplift our consciousness to be able to digest the music he wants to bestow. We just weren't ready all these years for the prophet to come and spit. At the end of the day a magic trick or illusion is a competition to be better than the other magicians or “MC”. Using Bordens voice at the end to say are you watching closely shows that he chose the simpler version of the story. In the movie hugh Jackman doesn't take the ordinary and make it extraordinary the way borden does instead he takes something extraordinary (the cloning machine) and made it seem ordinary like a simple magic trick. You can almost look at it as if Borden was a 5%er and Hugh Jackman was a 10%er and the audience is the 85%. The thing is people need to be ready for the trick but the jig is up because on the real the world has now reached a high state of consciousness and is ready for Jay to come back in full force and fury. Act 2 was Jay waiting for us to be ready for the prestige which is him just doing what Just Blaze said on the intro in Act 1 “just make music”. The prestige is when things kind of go full circle and hes bringing his rapping back and coming with real music in mass. He has mountains of records and even has gems all over youtube. In Act III last will and testament it will just be mountains of music coming out. Jay didnt want to be a preconceived idea this whole time reacting off knee jerk reactions the way the industry is. He wanted people to appreciate and ultimately deserve the music. That was the way some of Act 2 was being released just from people or fans deserving music from asking Jay. Jay is tryna remove the bias and land the message right where he wants it. On the forefront of a demographic that ignored him. Jay is using the prestige to value his product or music more than just the name. In act 2 things are supposed to get worse and worse for Jay, the story we are in the try/fail cycle was happening right now but not any more.
If you reading this Jay it's been more than a decade since Act I, through the internet and so much other crazy shit the consciousness of the world has been uplifted and it's time to come out of the shadow and complete your act.
On a side note this post was written because of actions by Jay Electronica himself. Whilst performing in toronto Jay gave his number to my rapper friend Noyz and when i heard about this i was excited cause this seemed like a chance to greatness. But instead i dived so deep into Jay ELectronica lore and ripped through all the interviews and youtube videos and music i could find. It got me to this point because truthfully i understand where Jay is coming from. He needs the vibe to be right for his music to come out. The man has talked to DMT aliens hes been on another level for a while but i think regardless 2018 is the year of Jay ELectronica so with that thank you for reading.
And if not i was grateful that for the last month or so i have been able to nerd out to some great hip hop and had mountains of content to sift through.

With all this hype in the last weeks around SoundCloud, and me hitting the free upload limit I figured I should get a look on the current alternatives.
These are my first impressions just by using the service as a visitor. I made no accounts. I'll include a link to a random profile for you to have a quick look at each for yourself. Big Tl;Dr at the end; small ones for each site.
I started off with this article and went from there. If I skip a service, I didn't bothered to look at the site based on the description in the article (excluding BandCamp and YouTube, I assume everybody knows about them).
Enough, lets start:
Orfium
Orfium is slick. Design wise the most appealing yet a bitter after taste of design hipster stuff something. But the first thing you see on the homepage is the direct marketing of the platform to you as artist. And that's the point with Orfium: it is quite upfront that its main concern is to make money for you, with them, for them. And they seem quite good at it judging the FAQ. Even if you already sold your soul, Orfium is sure to get a custom deal with the devil for you. And youtube monetization. I might fear, that the upfront 'we make money' marketing scares listeners. But they counter weight it with a custom landing page which caters to the needs of listeners. Here they say they offer high personalisation and search functionality. I didn't test it though.

You want to be underground? Take young.cloud! It even says

on the homepage. It's minimal. It's minimal SoundCloud. But it has something which looks like a Ban List which bans Artists with record labels. Navigation wise you can click on a picture or on a hashtag or you find the searchbar. Right next to it you can 'explore'. A Profile is similar to SoundCloud. Tracks, playlists, header, a empty 'about' with a twitter link. Feels like home. It seems quite active, cause the dude i linked has ~1398 Followers since May15. What is a bit special you can filter tracks on a profile by Month/Year just like on a Blog.
But what about FAQs? What about 'About' young.cloud? It took me quite some time to find 'Terms of use' and the like. You can find them only on profile pages. The ToS are splendid. Also the Privacy Policy. It even has a documented API! Yet the contact site made me stumple in my awe.
Young.Cloud has this underground vibe going cause it's shady at best. Searching for the little information the contact site gave I found this platform is a php template which you can license for 29$. But it seems solid based on the reviews. So if you want the underground feel why not invest 29 Bucks and build your own SoundCloud with blackjack and hookers!?

On the start we see equal consideration for Artist and Fan: quick buttons to join in either role. But first let's 'explore all features': quickly we realize that, like Orfium, reverbnation is foremost targeted at the content creator. Nothing behind the 'explore all features' link caters to listeners. No features for them. A profile is more like a sedcard. Pictures, videos and songs. Even a list with your upcoming shows. It seems modern and a good landing page. Looking at the pricing we see a feature list. The offers are really nice, like the option for a electric press kit. Now the pictures of the great twitter testimonials on the homepage made sense. In the free tier you get something like a nice Facebook integration, a 'gig finder' and even newsletters! I wonder who reads newsletters nowadays ... The sweet stuff is hidden behind a +10$/mo paywall. Another minus is the small upload size with the free tier (8mb/file) but it especially hurts that the other payed tiers only allow for 100MB/file.
Tl;Dr: Reminds me a bit of the old Myspace. If you want to spend money it might be the site you want direct labels to.

The dumpster. The place where artists dump their abominations which are not good enough for BandCamp and their main site. Profiles look like light towers guiding your way to the artists main page. You can share stuff without a profile which is nice. Oh they also have a competition thing.

It was embarrassing and degrading. I now know how others feel.. when we look down on them for "dress code"
THEN, after it gets long? Vanity becomes an issue.
when all of the men your age are balding.. with short hair, and you bring in a lions mane, it can be a powerful feeling. but... it's vanity.
So, I fasted one time, right before I turned 42... starting after Thanksgiving, I did 33 days, not eating till the sun went down... 1 day, for each of Jesus yrs. Then 7 days with nothing but herbal tea, milk, and honey.
for a total of 40 days.. then took off 3 to recover, cut off all my hair, and burned it on the barbecue pit.
Note that only 1 year in 7, gives you this much time between Thanksgiving and Christs "birth day."

I am the trunk of tree in this dream and my branches stretch forth into the future.
This dream, is not comforting, not nice, but cold, hard, and natural. It is uncaring... and just.
A cold wind blows through my leaves.
I see this one branch, my son, and his splits into his children and their children and on into the future. I see my daughters branch; her children, and their children, and her children's children's children.
A great tree stretches before me.
I am awestruck with the weight of the responsibility that weighs down on me.
I have a responsibility to the future.

The vision changes, there is a flicker.. and my perception of time alters.
I see my friend Sammy next to me. his tree stretches into the future like a great oak. I see his children playing with my children, his grandchildren playing with mine, and his great grandchildren are my great grandchildren.
His branches intertwined with mine.
And a flicker, static.
Sammy, made a choice.
The tree that was, the oak stretching into the future became translucent as if beginning to fade and thin into lines, fuses.
I was overcome with an immense feeling of sadness. (just a dream right?)
His branches began to thin, and became insubstantial, though the trunk remained strong.
a spark, ignition at the base of time, at the now... a flame like a spark that consumed first the base of the tree, and like the spark on the fuse of a bomb, rushed up the branches of that tree, and consumed all.
it left nothing but the vague shape and outline of a tree composed of ash... that began to blow away with the winds of time. Like in a looney tunes cartoon.

Where my tree begins, sammys ends.
on the branches of this bigger tree, of more generations, there is now a nubbie.
a little stick of a branch and I am suddenly filled with sadness.

but all is not sadness... for behold, like a forest after the forest fire, my tree became bigger and more fuller.
As if it had more room to grow in the future that now, will BE.

My fear was the the entire tree would be consumed along with myself and my descendants.
The fire, that horrible thing that I witnessed were the deaths of thousands of young men who died before they could live, before they could reproduce.

"Shoot." I said, blinking out of the Mirror conference I was replaying. Our projects up north were proceeding apace, and Chief Minister Wang was handling the territory well. He might be the North's first premier if he played his cards right.
"We got nothing. No clandestine drug problem, no sex scandal, no anti-social habits. As far as we can tell, he didn't even smoke weed at uni."
"Bullshit." I said. "The man was involved in the Bengheli Affair. You mean to tell me we've got nothing on a man whose mates were taking money from the italian mafia and snorting coke off the tits of human trafficked sex slaves." Matt shrugged.
"ICAC dug it up pretty good Ned. Griffiths didn't take any bribes, and while the bastard certainly knew what was happening, we can't prove it. Worse, that shit went public a decade ago Ned. It'll help if we bring up fresh dirt, but until then it's just old news."
"Surely there's something from his university days, a facebook or myspace status, blog post, anything." I said.
"There's a few crass teenaged comments and quotes in there, but nothing story worthy and nothing inconsistent with his current position on record." I deflated.
"Mark, Close the door and move the meeting with Ian Mcallen back by a quarter of an hour." I said. "Sarah, stop hanging back next to Howard's ghastly cricket bats, come up to the desk."
Sarah was 3 years out of university, came up outside partisan lines. It was part of the reason why I had her in my office, the woman had only ever worked for me. Matt had been in parliament longer than most MPs, and made the best chief of staff I could hope for.
"Alright then people plan B." I said with a sigh.
"I suppose entrapment is out of the question." Matt ventured.
"Too many moving parts, and too many unknowns." I said. "Griffith's been playing the game for the past 22 years. If we can't find him doing something unscrupulous in that period of time, the chances of us baiting him into doing it are slim to none, and the chance of something getting back to the press if we try is too high." I sighed.
"What about a Leak then." Sarah said. I paused.
"How?"
"We've got plenty of damaging material on hand to leak. That Department of Border Protection's Green Paper on revitalising off shore detention due to the expected influx if the Hong Kong situation blows up, surely there's something in the Cabinet minutes."
"Leaks are political fire, Sarah." Matt replied, his voice low. "Between cabinet solidarity and diffusion of responsibility we'd be just as likely to cop the blame if anything came out. And the last thing we need in the current climate is government weakness, not with the polls so close."
"We're talking about removing a minister and defanging a substantial faction within the party, Matt. There's no way to do that without breaking some eggs. Cabinet minutes are out of the question, those things are locked up tight and there's no way we could leak it securely or plausibly, and the Green Paper would be seen to be reflective of the entire government. What else have you got Sarah." She grasped for a moment.
"The National Security Committee minutes."
"Same Problem as the Cabinet-" I began.
"Not the closed minutes, the individual policy reports, the hearings, preliminary findings and internal memos. King is on the Committee too, and he's Griffith's creature, we get two birds with one stone."
"What do you think Matt." I said into the resulting silence.

Background
I'm not even sure where to start. I've known my best friend, let's call him Jay, and my gf Ingrid for a long time. I met them as a kid, which is kind of a story in itself.
My dad had me really late so I'm almost 18 years younger than my older brother (different mom; my dad is on his 3rd marriage now and my mom was his second wife- she didn't have visitation because she was crazy, and then she fell off the map once the divorce was finalized). My brother (Rich) was my friend's/gf's dad's (Will) staff sergeant. Somehow they became really good friends, and they've been friends ever since. I met their whole family when my brother invited them to our cottage one year and they didn't want to leave their kids so he suggested I come along too (my dad and his wife were in an adjacent cottage so really I stayed with them but most of the time I was playing with Jay and Ingrid).
I guess a lot of stuff lined up to make sure Jay/Ingrid and I stayed in contact. Will and our family are from the same area in the pacific NW (that's how Rich and Will became good friends in the first place) so it was easy to organize trips and do shit together. I guess some people might find it weird cause my brother was basically organizing play dates and shit for me but in a sense he was kind of more like a dad anyway- not through any fault of his own; mostly just my dad was really old and didn't have a lot of energy because he'd already raised one child into adulthood. His current wife is younger and a nice lady but I've never really felt like she was my mom and she didn't take too much interest in parenting me. So a lot of the time when he(Rich) was not on-base he'd be doing shit with me. I owe him a lot because if I were him I would have probably just fucked off so I wouldn't have to deal with a small child.
Middle/Highschool
Anyway, as we grew up we kept in touch on MySpace and w/e and then eventually they (as in Will and his wife Lynn) actually bought a small condo nearby because my highschool was good. I was pretty happy because, truth be told, I was a little shit and they were my only real friends- because they were only around me enough to see the fun side of me, but they still knew me long enough not to stop being friends with me and for me to have their loyalty in some way lol. I had some serious behavioral issues at this point- stuff like getting angry way too easily and lying compulsively about tiny stupid shit. Anyway I think going to highschool with them as like somewhat fully formed people was really good for me cause they called me on a lot of my bullshit - but also people liked them and people started liking me more by proxy so it helped me make more friends even though I wasn't in their year. A lot of the anger and shitty lying eventually stopped though I still sometimes catch myself doing that/feeling that way.
By this point I was pretty much their family. My parents were happy to pass me off to them for anything that took too much energy. I even went on vacation to Germany with them once - which was fucking amazing by the way. Lynn was also somewhat of a mother figure to me (I use this term somewhat loosely I guess). A lot of the time I would just go over to their place for dinner and she'd make us food and snacks for when we'd play games/study etc. She used to care about my grades more than my own stepmom, and gave me advice on how to apply to universities to make myself look like a more 'attractive' candidate. Will was also really nice to me, just a really good dude all around. There was absolutely no reason for them to treat me this way other than the fact that they were friends with Rich.
At some point I started being better friends with Jay, mostly because I guess he's a guy, and also while I had common interests with both of them, we had some ones that Ingrid didn't share. For example we both were pretty into baseball/football and cars (lol yes I know). We still played games and did other stuff with Ingrid but I mean she also had her own friends. So a lot of the time Jay and I would bus to go watch games and just chill and hang out. We talked about a lot of stuff. I guess at the time we were both going through a bout of ... I wouldn't even call it depression but maybe dysthymia. I guess it was nice to just talk to someone about stuff like anxiety/depression w/e without feeling judged.

Anyway, I eventually got accepted to a bunch of universities, decided I'd try out the east coast so that's what I took. The summer before I left, I started getting closer to Ingrid again. I'm going to clarify- it's not like I hadn't been attracted to her, but I just didn't want to be that dude, especially since I hadn't really gotten any cues from her and I didn't want to piss everyone off. But I lucked out and one night at a party when we were both drunk, she told be she was feeling down and when I asked why, she said it was because I was leaving. I said I'd always keep in touch but I guess I could tell that's not really what she meant, and that was the first time I ever got a clue that she had liked me. But yeah, I guess it was the booze or something- we ended up making out and then two nights later we ended up having sex at another party. We hid it for a while but eventually Jay found out. Needless to say there was some friction between me and him and also between Will and my brother (which I get).
College
I tried to convince Ingrid to come to the same college as me but she didn't get in. Ironically Jay did. But I guess that was Ingrid's excuse to visit lots. LDR was hard but I think it could have gone a lot worse. We Skyped a ton. Sometimes we had fights but again, kind of had to do with the compulsive lying more than anything (e.g. I'd say I was at X when I was actually at Y for literally no reason and then Ingrid would see my location on Google Latitude and get suspicious). I had to do a lot of work to get her to trust me at times. But she was really patient with me. I can imagine that it was really hard for her too.
I ended up being roommates with Jay for two years. We already had a lot of mutual friends from HS but made even more in college. During this time his depression came back but I tried to be there for him. It was hard though. He started becoming reclusive. I started seeing him less and less cause he'd just hole himself up in his room and play games and eventually I got really sick of trying to pep talk him because nothing worked. He just became a black hole of negativity. Even Ingrid started getting pissed off with him. I guess like... I understood how he felt but at the same time I didn't. He had so much going for him. He was gonna get into the airforce as an engineer when he graduated and his grades were somehow still pretty good.
July 2014
So I eventually graduate. I didn't want to do the military thing and I'm lucky that no one in my family really pressured me to. I got a job and everyone was proud of me. Ingrid and Jay graduated a year later, but Jay decided to hang around for the summer after in off campus housing doing god knows what. At this point even though I still considered him my best friend I was talking to him barely once a week, if at all.
Last summer I went back to visit a friend (can call him Jack) doing grad school- he was a mutual friend with Jay and also his roommate at the time. I mean, like I also went to see Jay, but when I messaged him on facebook he kind of just 'saw' the message and didn't respond.
Jack was throwing a party and I was crashing on their couch. I went to Jay's room to say hi and we talked for a bit and he more or less seemed normal like old times. He seemed a lot happier now that he was out of school, but still not quite there. I asked him to promise me he'd join the party after he'd finished playing games (he was waiting on a game of LoL).
The party happened but Jay didn't come down at any point. I went and knocked once but I figured he was busy so I just went back to the main area.
I didn't see him the next morning either. I figured he just got super into playing and then fell asleep. Jack and I went out for food and came back. Still nothing.
Sunday night I started to worry a little. I knew this was normal behavior for him but I didn't think he'd not see me again before I left. So I knocked and then decided to see where he was on Latitude, which showed him in the house. This is when I started to get worried- so I opened the door (wasn't locked).
This part is really hard to write. It smelled really bad. Not like death, but like vomit. Jay was face down in his keyboard. His monitor was black but it was clearly still on because the status light was orange. I went to go shake him because I thought he might be asleep even though there was vomit everywhere and there was literally no way this could have been the case. Or I dunno. I don't know what I was thinking, but it certainly wasn't what it actually turned out to be. Or I guess I was just hoping. All I could think was 'Holy Shit'. This is also when I realised you can tell the difference between someone who's sleeping and someone who's dead by touching them. I basically could tell right away and I almost puked.
I dialed 911 and they were there shortly. We answered a bunch of questions. He got taken away. I called Ingrid right after and told her what had happened. I am not really sure what I expected. She was mostly just in shock but I think it's also cause she didn't see him. I was a huge mess and I had 0 idea what was happening. I mean it didn't look like a suicide but who the fuck knows during moments like that. I also called Will and Lynn that night and they took it pretty badly obviously.
The Aftermath
It turned out Jay had had some sort of aneurysm or hemhorrage (I think they're the same but I'm not sure) while he was playing LoL. They're extremely rare in people of our age group, though he was genetically predisposed to them because they run in their family. So no suicide or foul play. Just plain old random death.
I talked to Ingrid after but every time we tried it was really awkward. About two weeks after she called to tell me she was no longer happy. That she feels like she just kind of fell into a relationship with me because I was just there, etc. etc. She said that I'm not 'fully emotionally mature'. I'm like, look, I know you're hurting right now because of other things, but I'm probably the one that understands the most. But she had been insistent that it was just other stuff that she "finally needed to confront".
This is killing me. All I want to do is talk to her. To hold her and tell her that I'm there for her so we can heal together. She told me she needs some time and some space so I gave her that, but I don't think she's ever going to come back to me.
But there's even more to it. Will and Lynn won't see me anymore. The last time I saw them they were extremely awkward around me. Another time I was in town with Rich, who was going to see Will at some point and I said I'd go with him and Rich basically snarled at me telling me just to stay at home.
I'm so confused and so sad. I feel like I'm not being allowed to grieve with everyone else. I can't tell if it's because I was there in the house when he died. Maybe they hate me because I was partying while he was having an aneurysm in his room. Maybe they hate me because I was close to him for so long. I don't know.
I talked to my dad about it a bit and he's not great with words. Rich told me they just need time.
The reality of it is just that I feel like I've lost my family. I had this extra support system for so long that I leaned on so heavily that I'm not sure what to do now. I feel like an island.
Now
It's been months now. Will and Lynn sent me a nice but formal Christmas message. It was one of the first times in years that I didn't visit them for the holidays. It feels weird not having Ingrid around. I miss her so much. I send her messages every so often and she just doesn't respond. She recently untagged herself from a bunch of our photos and unfriended me so I've been sending her messages on Hangouts and texting her, but to no avail.
I feel like I've lost 4 people, not just 1. I feel schizophrenic, cycling between grieving for Jay, grieving for my relationship, and feeling crushed over being ignored by Will and Lynn. I'm so in the dark as to what I've done. I've gotten no answers, no closure, nothing.
I want Ingrid to know that I still love her and that I know what she's going through. I wish she could see that there's no reason to throw away everything we have.
I want Will and Lynn to know how truly I sorry I am that this happened. I know that they will never get their son back... and I'm not looking to be his replacement or anything weird. I just want things to be more like they were.

I regret a lot of things in my life. I guess the first is how I mentally scarred a kid during my elementary school years. I was playing with popsicle sticks and drawing some pictures on them when I thought up of this terrible idea to tell a kid's fortune. I spoke with the nearest kid next to me--the one to my right of my desk--and asked if he wanted to hear of his fortune. He did, so I shuffled the sticks in my hand, threw them onto my desk, and chose the nearest ones to my hand. Then I fabricated the meaning of my sticks, essentially telling him that he would grow to be ugly, old, lonely, and sick where he would eventually die. He told me to shut up and that none of this would happen, but I assured him with wide eyes that I told his fortune and that it was not left to me to dictate his destiny, but that of god's. He got pretty scared and his mom had to call my mom that night, since her son couldn't go to sleep and was acting weird all day. Before I told the kid's fortune he was a pretty popular kid in school. After my fortune-telling, he was considered as the least popular kid in school and he started to lose all of his friends. I think he transferred to a new school about a year later. This happened all during 3rd grade.
Another instance was how I used to hang out with my cousin in Mexico a lot. Mind you, he was a 1st cousin who was male. So, we hung out really often and wrestled a lot. Well, one thing led to another and we started to fondle each other by grabbing each other's junk. This escalated to the point where we decided to have some oral and anal sex (I was pretty small at the same time while he was fucking loaded), mainly him fucking me. Whether it was in the morning, afternoon, evening, or midnight, we didn't really care; we were fucking each other and having fun all the same. This went on from the ages of nine to twelve. I went through a pretty dark period in my middle school years because I never really had any friends (I got my first few in high school). The biggest period was when I was in 7th and 8th grade where I decided to become a satanist. I was originally a Catholic raised by birth, so the jump in beliefs was pretty big. I regret it a lot because I essentially treated everyone around me like shit. I holed myself up in a cloud of ignorance that I failed to part myself. I only stopped becoming a satanist after 8th grade up to my sophomore year of high school because I was too scared of devoting myself to satan :\ Now I'm an agnostic atheist who's a rationalist, but the reasons as to how I am the person I am today is too long and is for another day/thread.
I used to molest my aunt when I was eight to ten by feeling her up while she slept :\ She used to sleep in my house because she had nowhere else to sleep in. She was working a shitty job at the time at Burger King, so there wasn't much she could do about it. She also recently jumped the border, so she couldn't really take any better jobs. When I was a teen from the ages of 12 to ~16, I used to have a shitload of lucid dreams on a daily basis. As any teen in this day and age, I was incredibly horny all the time and wondered how sex felt like. I would use my lucid dreams as opportunities to explore how it might feel like. Okay, nothing weird there; sex IS the most common theme in dreams after all, I think right next to couples dreaming that their partner is cheating on them. The shameful part is that I dreamt of having sex with my mother. It's not like I find her to be physically or intellectually attractive, I just had an urge to bone her in my dreams. It fills me with great disgust and I can't look straight into my mother's eyes, but I'm extremely ashamed that I used to fuck her in my dreams. The frequency greatly died down after the age of 16, as well as the number of lucid dreams I got on a daily basis, but about once a year I still have a dream where I have sex with my mother. It fills me with nausea whenever I think about it.
When I entered middle school at 6th grade, I became friends with a guy who was pretty chill. He was smart, good-looking, friendly, and immensely popular with the whole school. Scratch that; he WAS the most popular kid in the entire school. Even the 8th graders respected him, which was a pretty big deal at the time. I don't know how, but him and I stuck like glue and soon became best friends. Everything was going dandy until two weeks into the school year where we got an argument about the benefits of college. Now that I reflect back upon the experience I realize he was right, but I was too far indoctrinated within the US education system to realize my false beliefs. Anyways, I said that a college education was required in order to be successful in life, while he argued that school is a waste of time. One thing led to another and he launched ad hominem attacks against me (insults). He insulted my mother and my ability to succeed in life, which pushed me off the rail. I told him to shut up because another girl was in the same room during this whole exchange, but the girl encouraged him and they both laughed at my frustration. I began to cry, which didn't help my situation and only gave them more fuel to insult me. Needless to say that I was PISSED at him after I got back home. I decided to get my revenge by getting him in trouble with the middle school, though I still didn't really know how. I then remembered that he had showed me a knife earlier during the day, while he also showed to the boys in our grade on how to make a flamethrower with a lighter (which he had) and an axe body-spray can. I spoke with my school and falsely reported that my friend threatened my life with his life and continuously verbally abused me. After I reported him and started the rest of the school day, he came up to me and apologized for how he acted last night. Well, fuck me. I avoided him like crazy once he told me that because I betrayed his trust big time. About a week after, he's expelled from the school: they found his knife and other people confirmed the things I reported (except the part that he threatened me). The shit I was about to receive was only beginning though. After I reported him, we never spoke again. Rumors were going around that I threatened to stab him with a pencil and threw textbooks at him, so I was portrayed as the bad guy and he was portrayed as the hero that was fucked over. Remember, he was the MOST popular guy in the entire school, so after he was expelled I became everyone's number one enemy. I can't remember my sixth grade year because it's far too suppressed back in my head, but I made absolutely no friends, got shit about his expulsion on a weekly basis, and the rest of my grade intentionally isolated me from their interactions. 7th grade was the same shit and 8th grade got a bit better. Now that I reflect on the whole thing, I wish I had more control over my emotions and didn't let his comments get to me. Feels bad man.
After I expelled the kid from my middle school, my mind was in shambles from the isolation/regret and decided to carry out some revenge against my elementary school peers (I was physically and verbally bullied a lot during my elementary school years. Once again, virtually no friends. I had 1 friend that I considered my best friend, but he essentially used me and I didn't realize it until the near of the end of my stay at the school). Myspace was really kicking off at the time and I still remembered the first and last name of some of my elementary school years, so I did some basic doxxing and found their personal email addresses. I sent three emails to three people where I essentially threatened to hunt them down and kill them with a shotgun. All of them reported the emails to the elementary school principal (the public school went up to 6th grade, but I transferred during 5th grade to a private, independent school), which promptly carried out an investigation. I was pretty stupid about the whole thing and intentionally left some personal details that pointed I was the culprit (I mentioned that I transferred at 5th grade, which significantly narrowed down the potential culprits for the emails). I also used a personal email address without a proxy server, so the school was able to trace it back to me. I was able to get away with only a warning and forced therapy, but I still don't really know why I sent the emails in the first place AND made it obvious who I was.
This one is a two-parter. During 7th and 8th grade year, I fell in love with a red head girl. I thought she was fucking lovely and wanted to hang out with her, but I was too fucked up at the time to properly socially interact with anybody. I pretty much stalked her as a result. I began to make an extensive dox on her and her family, while I began to spy on her without her knowing. I dropped secretive notes into her locker and began to stare at her during my classes. I fantasized about her 24/7 in waking life and dreams. To say that I was obsessed with her would be an understatement. She was practically my raison d'etre at the time...Anyways, I'm pretty sure I didn't make the girl's experience of middle school a very enjoyable experience. Now here's the second part; while all of this was going on, I met somebody new during my 8th grade year. I wanted to speak with her but couldn't really do it face to face, so I accidentally messaged her in AIM asking if she wanted to hang out or something. I called her by a name of my friend, which she promptly told me was someone else. I apologized and asked if I still knew her. Well, small chit chat turned into deep conversations where we shared secrets with each other. I think we spoke for four hours non-stop. I was a REALLY smooth talker back then over the internet, so I went from the status of a stranger to one of her closest friends within a span of four hours. I thought that was the extent of it, but it turns out she was also attracted to me...by a lot. I mean, she was flirting with me every day and I didn't pick up on any of this. You know what I did instead? I used her to gather information on the girl I was excessively obsessing over. She wanted to please me as much as she could, so she did what I commanded her to do. I manipulated her and threw away her feelings for me for my own self-benefit; there is no disguise in that. I didn't realize how fucked up I was until I started to attend therapy of my own free will at 9th grade. It was a bit too late since both girls moved on away from me once I entered high school. Now I can't help but regret the way I acted towards both of the girls. I just lived in my fantasies and refused to look at reality in the face.
This one is my biggest regret of them all though. When I began middle school, I essentially began to treat my father like shit. It reached a point where I made it clear I wanted to kill him in an argument we were both pretty heated about. He was incredibly scared by the eyes I gave him and honestly saw murderous intent in them (I have never shown another human being those same eyes ever again), so he backed off immediately and maybe cried a bit. Mind you, he was working his ass off to feed 5 people, excluding himself. He was obese, had bad knees, suffered from alcoholism, had diabetes, and only received periodic work (he was a construction worker). He would work all day and sleep all night so he could repeat the process all over again. During the weekends he would always ask me to do small favors for him (like give him massages because his body hurt everywhere), while he would always ask me if I wanted to go fishing with him. I would make excuses and tell him I was too tired to hang out with him. This would be acceptable, only if I didn't do this on a constant basis. Somehow he still loved me (he was a very simple and Catholic man), even though I made it clear I couldn't really care about him. Well, things got a bit better in my sophomore year, but our relationship still wasn't the best. Sophomore year came rolling along and doctors told him he need a new heart valve because he was born with a heart defect. The doctors made it clear that he would need a new heart valve within the year or he would die, so he didn't have much of a choice in the matter. I helped him a bit with the whole process without much complaint, so at least that worked. Fast-forward to the day of the surgery. The transplant was a success, but my father began to suffer from complications soon afterward. I was school at the time and a friend of my mom's came to pick me up and to take me to the hospital. My father was in an induced coma and my mom quickly gave me a rundown. For a weird reason his lungs started to fill with liquid, while his body began to swell up. He was pretty fat, so the skin was already stretched. They had to cut him up a bit to relieve some of the pressure, since the swelling began to tighten up his veins. Over time his condition got worse and the doctor made it clear we could either leave him on life support or take him off. My mom decided to take him off of it and we all said our goodbyes to him. The autopsy later found the cause of his death (some complication with the blood transfusion process), so there wasn't much we could do to save him. The biggest regret I have though is that I was never able to apologize to his face about all the shit I committed to him. I'm not sure if catatonic patients are still able to process sensory information, but I made sure to apologize to my dad and to tell him repeatedly that I loved him before we pulled him off life support. It was after some serious self-reflection that I realized I had always loved him, I just hated myself. Still, I can't help but feel immense regret for not being better to him. I still dream of him sometimes and I try to apologize to him in my dreams, but he never really responds to me. It feels so horrible. I regret that period of my life and will always be ashamed of my actions as a human being before my sophomore year of high school. Once my father died, his death served as a wake-up call that I had to change if I wanted to better my life. His death essentially destroyed my identity with its ideology at the time (too complicated to explain), so I had a complete blank slate to work with. I made sure to not fuck up this time by incorporating a crapload of self-reflection and forcing myself to be more open with my therapist and the people around me. I read and thought more deeply about things, while I criticized my thoughts and beliefs on a daily basis. Through constant molding and destruction of my beliefs, I finally formed a stable foundation of beliefs that grounds me into reality. I'm definitely more happy than I was before my father's death and I no longer use/stalk/threaten people, but I will always reflect back onto my childhood/early teenage years as the years where I did not act as a proper human being, but rather as trash. I still can't say that I love myself, but I can at least say I no longer hate myself and am becoming more tolerant to how my body works.

Okay, so I have to do a research paper for my English Composition class, and the topic is weather or not social networks, like Facebook, Google+, and Myspace help build real friendships and relationships or not. I am on both sides of the topic, but I want to know what Reddit thinks. If you could back up an argument with an article I can cite it would be very helpful. I'm not asking Reddit to write my paper for me, I just want outside opinions to help me formulate ideas.

This is a broad question I know: After the past few months reading all of the articles on Reddit and online, I have grown some concern with the level of anonymity I have now, and will be able to have in the future (along with access to information). With harsh government regulations over the internet in other countries, I am worried that given enough time, it will spread out to other nations. So I want to get started before that happens, a preemptive strike. I want to get in the "underground" scene now and get accustomed to it, before the need is there.
I have searched Google, but I wound up with limited information. Many of the sites were ad driven/backlinked sites that offered no real information.
I know that I can use Tor, a VPS or other proxy services but I was wondering if there were some less conventional or better ways to stay anonymous?
I have a spare computer I can turn into a personal proxy server (I was looking into 3proxy, recommendations?), or it can be utilized for something else. I know there are some Linux distros that would be good for proxy servers. Anyone have recommendations here? I know if I run a proxy, I should bounce through another proxy. Also I wouldn't mind stepping into SSH, any recommendations?

I am not a paranoid person in the sense of OMG THAY CAN TRACK EVERYTHING!!!, but I do know what they can and can not access. I understand what is safe and unsafe to post online. I don't have Facebook/TwitteMyspace so I am not worried about these things. Like I said this is a preemptive deal. I would like to get my hands dirty working with these ways so if the time were ever to arise where I would need to use them I would already know how. More or less I am looking to just be able to access information, which coincides with running through a proxy, vpn and SSH, if it were to be blocked.
