The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why It’s a Good Decision

2024.05.16 19:50 Professional_Disk131 The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why It’s a Good Decision

The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why It’s a Good Decision
In the vast universe of investment opportunities, gold stands out not just for its glitter but for its enduring value and historical significance. The allure of gold has not diminished over the centuries; instead, it has woven itself into the fabric of financial stability and wealth preservation. Herein, we delve into why investing in gold is not only a prudent decision but one that could safeguard your financial future in ways that other assets cannot.
Why Investing in Gold is a Good Decision
The decision to include gold in one’s investment portfolio is driven by several compelling factors. First and foremost, gold is universally recognized for its intrinsic value. Unlike paper currency, whose value can be eroded by inflation or government policies, gold’s worth is not tied to the performance of a particular economy. This unique characteristic makes it a sought-after asset for those looking to preserve their wealth over time.
Moreover, the resilience of gold becomes particularly evident during periods of market volatility. When stocks and bonds are buffeted by the storms of financial markets, gold often remains a beacon of stability. Its price movements are not directly correlated with those of other assets, making it an excellent tool for diversification. This uncorrelated behavior is a testament to gold’s standing as a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty.
Lastly, the liquidity of gold is another factor that contributes to its attractiveness as an investment. Gold can be easily bought or sold in various forms, from physical bars and coins to gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This ease of transaction ensures that investors can quickly adjust their positions in response to changing economic conditions, enhancing gold’s appeal as a versatile asset.

Historical Performance of Gold as an Investment
The historical performance of gold is a testament to its enduring value and appeal as an investment. Over the centuries, gold has not only preserved wealth but, in many instances, has significantly appreciated in value. This long-term appreciation is particularly notable when compared to other assets that may depreciate due to technological advancements or changes in consumer preferences.
During periods of high inflation, gold has historically outperformed other investments. Its value tends to rise when the purchasing power of fiat currencies declines, thereby providing a hedge against inflation. This characteristic was notably evident during the 1970s, a decade marked by high inflation, during which gold prices surged.
Furthermore, gold’s performance during economic downturns has reinforced its reputation as a safe haven. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, for example, investors flocked to gold, driving up its price. This flight to safety highlighted gold’s role as a stabilizing force amidst economic turmoil.
Hedge Against Inflation and Economic Downturns
One of the most compelling reasons to invest in gold is its ability to act as a hedge against inflation and economic downturns. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money, diminishing the real value of cash holdings and fixed-income investments such as bonds. Gold, however, maintains its purchasing power over the long term. As the cost of goods and services increases, so does the price of gold, thereby preserving the value of investors’ holdings.
In addition to its inflation-hedging properties, gold offers protection during economic downturns. During such times, investors often lose confidence in traditional assets like stocks and bonds. The uncertainty that pervades financial markets during recessions drives investors toward safer assets, and gold is frequently the beneficiary of this shift in sentiment. Its ability to maintain value when other assets are declining is a crucial reason why gold is considered a cornerstone of a well-diversified portfolio.

Diversification in Your Investment Portfolio
Diversification is a fundamental principle of investing aimed at reducing risk. By spreading investments across different asset classes, investors can mitigate the impact of a poor performance by any single asset. Gold plays a vital role in this diversification strategy due to its low correlation with other financial assets.
Including gold in a portfolio can reduce volatility and improve returns over the long term. Studies have shown that portfolios containing a mix of stocks, bonds, and gold have outperformed those without gold, particularly during times of market stress. This diversification benefit is a key reason why financial advisors often recommend allocating a portion of an investment portfolio to gold.
Tangible Value and Stability of Gold
Gold’s tangible nature is another factor that contributes to its appeal as an investment. Unlike digital assets or paper money, gold is a physical substance that has been valued by human societies for millennia. This tangible value provides a sense of security and permanence that is unmatched by many other investments.
The stability of gold is also reflected in its supply. Gold cannot be produced at the same pace as paper money or digital currencies, which central banks can create at will. The limited supply of gold, combined with its enduring demand, underpins its value and makes it a stable investment over the long term.
Protection Against Currency Devaluation
Currency devaluation is a risk that affects all investors, regardless of the currency in which they hold their assets. When a currency loses value, it takes more units of that currency to purchase the same amount of goods or services. Gold offers protection against this risk because it is priced in currency terms. As the value of a currency declines, the price of gold in that currency tends to rise, preserving the purchasing power of investors’ holdings.
This protection is especially valuable in countries with volatile currencies or those prone to inflationary pressures. For investors in such environments, gold can serve as a safe haven, protecting against the adverse effects of currency devaluation.
Tax Advantages of Investing in Gold
Investing in gold can offer certain tax advantages, depending on the jurisdiction and the form of gold investment. For example, some countries do not levy capital gains tax on gold investments, or they may offer favorable tax treatment compared to other assets. These tax benefits can enhance the overall return on gold investments, making it an even more attractive option for investors.
It’s important for investors to consult with a tax advisor to understand the specific tax implications of investing in gold in their country. Taking advantage of these tax benefits can maximize the returns from gold investments and contribute to a more efficient investment strategy.

Different Ways to Invest in Gold
There are several ways to invest in gold, each with its own set of advantages and considerations. Physical gold, in the form of bars or coins, is a popular option for its tangible value and direct ownership. However, it requires secure storage and insurance, which can incur additional costs.
Gold ETFs and mutual funds offer a more convenient way to invest in gold without the need for physical storage. These financial instruments are traded on stock exchanges and are backed by physical gold or gold futures contracts. They provide liquidity and ease of trading but may come with management fees.
Gold mining stocks and mutual funds are another avenue for gold investment. These options involve investing in companies that mine gold, offering potential for dividends and capital appreciation. However, they also carry risks related to the performance of individual companies and the mining sector as a whole.
Risks and Considerations of Investing in Gold
While gold offers many benefits as an investment, there are also risks and considerations that investors should be aware of. The price of gold can be volatile in the short term, driven by factors such as currency fluctuations, interest rates, and geopolitical events. This volatility requires a long-term perspective and a tolerance for price fluctuations.
Additionally, investing in physical gold involves costs for storage and insurance, which can erode returns. Investors should carefully consider these costs and weigh them against the benefits of holding physical gold.
Finally, it’s important to recognize that gold does not produce income, such as dividends or interest, which some investors may seek from their investments. This lack of income should be considered in the context of an overall investment strategy and financial goals.
Conclusion: Is Investing in Gold Right for You?
Investing in gold offers a range of benefits, including diversification, protection against inflation and currency devaluation, and stability in times of economic uncertainty. However, like any investment, it also comes with risks and considerations that must be carefully evaluated.
For those seeking to preserve wealth and reduce risk in their investment portfolio, gold can be an excellent choice. Its historical performance, tangible value, and role as a hedge against economic downturns make it a compelling option for many investors.
Ultimately, whether investing in gold is right for you depends on your financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment strategy. By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision about including gold in your investment portfolio.

2024.05.16 19:42 ideletereddit Some thoughts on Videodrome after rewatching it…

So much more compelling on rewatch when I’m able to disassociate myself from the shock factor. David Cronenberg’s reflection of the era of trashy MTV television and classless pornography available on home video, is even more relevant in the times of today, where the sickest media imaginable is available in a few clicks(or more likely, taps). We live in an era of a constant demand for simple gratification. We look at screens every day for stimulation. We live behind personas online, and rely upon this virtual reality to express ourselves. We truly have become one with our machines, and as technology advances to make technology an even larger element of our lives and to further stimulate to the point that it replaces reality. AI is slowly becoming a part of society, the line between truth and fabrication has become increasingly vague. Truth is evolving. We live in a completely different world to our ancestors, a world created by us. Humanity has overtaken the natural world, and will likely soon destroy it. However, media is eternal. Media never dies. When an artist dies, their recordings keep their spirit.
The film is also a reflection on the sensationalized state of media. Human beings are constantly on the search for the most obscene content. Whether this be in tabloids about famous figures, or news articles, or most dangerously, in exaggerated media that distorts these revolting concepts into a phallic bastardization of itself. Videodrome is a commentary on its own audience in this way. The graphic violence on screen is a commentary on the exaggerated violence the films viewers want to engage in, while fulfilling this purpose within itself. The film also works to comment on the way that pornography destroys the perception of gratification in one’s mind and makes them less human. Again, an exaggerated, crude bastardization of one of life’s most intense and emotionally potent experiences. The violence in the film is not only incredibly well done, but it is also a meta reflection on the distortion of media and how it affects the mind.
Truthfully, I could write so much more about this film, but this will do for now. I am so happy I was able to watch this in a theater with an excited and engaged crowd, and even more ecstatic that I was able to share the film with my dear friend and open up his mind to a side of cinema he had yet to discover.

2024.05.16 19:10 howinteresting127 Where I'm At/My Current State of Mind

So, I'm not entirely sure what my goal is with this post. One thing I know for certain is that it will be very long, and probably sort of jumbled and frantic, more stream of consciousness than anything. I guess I just sort of wanted to share some of the important realizations I've had in recent months, and see if: 1. Other people think that they're fair or "correct" realizations, and I'm not becoming, like, delusional or something. 2. Maybe my sharing these perspectives will help or inspire someone else who has struggled in ways similar to me.
So, here's the basic background of things. I've always been a really reserved and quiet person, ever since I was a little kid. Add in being skinny and nerdy for most of my life, and maxing out at a height of 5'9", and I'm not exactly a hot product for the average girl my age (19, turning 20 in a few weeks). In fact, I'd never had a relationship until this past year in college, but I'll get more into that in a minute. Hell, I hadn't had so much as a first kiss until this past year, either.
And, at the beginning of this past school year, being my second year of college (as a commuter student, so socializing is pretty difficult), I began to really get down on myself for having never been in a relationship, never kissed a girl, being a virgin, etc. It started to really take a toll on my mental health, because I believed that there was something intrinsically wrong and unlovable about me. Whereas a lot of young men who struggle socially romantically seem to be directing their sadness, frustration, and anger outward toward the world, especially toward women, I instead found myself directing those feeling toward myself. I was convinced that, on a basic level, there was some vital component to who I am as a person that disqualifies me from being worthy of love or affection. After all, that's what 19 years of evidence suggest, right?
Looking back, I think a large component in this was how I had been struggling, and still struggle to a degree, with my identity as a young man. I'm naturally a pretty progressive person, and I make an effort to be open to the perspectives of other groups and listen to their stories. Unfortunately, as we all know, a lot of people have been harmed by the men in their lives. And I know, I know: if I'm not doing anything wrong myself, then I shouldn't take any of these stories personally. But I guess, given the poor mental state that I was already in, I took it as validation that there was in fact something intrinsically wrong about me, and that thing was being a man. I started to avoid people on the street, especially if they were a woman or presented as feminine. At work, I avoid going anywhere near female customers, out of fear of making them uncomfortable. I'd keep my head down walking from class to class on campus, worried that I might make someone uneasy with my gaze. It wasn't that I thought I was a threat; in fact, I knew that I was not. But I also knew that the people around me didn't know that. In their eyes, maybe they have to assume that I'm a creep or that I'm a dangerous type of man. And it hurt to realize that, and I realize now, like I said, that I took it as validation that there was something intrinsically wrong with me.
Due to that, as well as other factors, such as stress and exhaustion from overworking (I'm a full-time student and work about 30 hours a week, which is a lot for me, might not be for others, I admit), I experienced some of the worst periods of depression I've ever had, since being diagnosed with it and anxiety in 2021. I tried going to therapy. I went to a few sessions, then gradually started missing more and more due to a lack of time, until my therapist cancelled all of our scheduled future sessions. It was on me. I wasn't committed.
I lost my passion for my hobbies and interests, like creative writing, which had previously been an important emotional outlet for me. A lot of nights would be spent lying in bed, listening to a playlist filled with sad music and hugging a pillow, wishing it was someone who loved me in the way that I thought, or hoped, love would work.
At the behest of my friends, to whom I only presented my issues as being a little down about never having been in a relationship, I started messing around with dating apps. At first, I felt good about making some sort of effort to put myself out there. Like I said, I've always been insanely reserved, so doing something like making a dating profile felt like an accomplishment. Of course, nothing much came of it. Over the five or so months that I was on the app, I maxed out at about six likes on my profile, and only matched with two people.
But one of those two people was a girl who went to the same college as me, and we seemed to have a lot of interests in common. And I mean a lot. To the point that it was almost comical. Of course, I realize now that having some hobbies in common isn't enough to form a good relationship with someone, but I realize now that I was just desperate for someone who I could convince myself halfway-tolerated me. She and I started to go out, and after a while, we decided to make things "official." My first kiss. My first relationship. My first girlfriend.
It lasted for only a few months. After a while, something felt off. I wasn't as excited to see her as I had been before. It was hard for us to make time for each other, between my working and her being involved in extracurricular stuff around campus. Car rides and dates began to be filled with longer and more frequent stretches of awkward silence, as I tried to think of something to say or talk about, only to come up empty-handed. As we got to know each other better, I realized that we didn't have as much in common as I first thought. She was a little more conservative, not necessarily in a political sense, but more in terms of "status", if that makes sense. I learned that financial success was very important to her parents, and I could tell that it was important to her, too. She avoided telling her parents that I was an English major, instead opting to tell them that I was getting a degree in computer science, as that was my minor at the time. It seemed to me that the status of a relationship was more important to her than the quality of the relationship (pot calling the kettle black, yes, I realize). For example, there was a dance on campus that she wanted to go to, pretty much just to take pictures of the two of us together so she could show them to friends and family. But as for the dance itself, it was more of the same that had been happening before: awkward silence, short conversations, lots of looking around at anything other than each other.
After a while, I decided that, for both of our sakes, I needed to break things off. I didn't want to waste her time when I knew that my heart wasn't in it anymore. So, at the beginning of April, I drove over to her dorm, and we talked it over in my car for a while. At the end, we hugged one last time, and I haven't seen her since.
I think a key component in the decision I made is the fact that I reconnected with some old friends from high school, who are still local, even though they are going to another university. Over Christmas break, I hung out with them for the first time since the pandemic as, during that time, I ended up having a falling out with them over some dumb high school drama and political differences. To my surprise, they had changed a lot, and had managed to pull themselves out of the incel trajectory that I had seen them beginning to fall down during high school. They were kinder, more accepting people. My surprise was matched only by my pride in them. I had feared and assumed the worst of them, and I couldn't have been happier to be proven wrong. Since then, I've been invited back into their group chats, and I see them in-person with some regularity, when our schedules allow it.
I think having that connection made me feel more comfortable with the idea of being single again, and since the break up, I've been able to rely on them for support, laughs, and just feeling like I have somewhere I belong. Before, I found myself desperate for any kind of connection and fell into a cycle of denying myself that connection because I was convinced that, since it didn't just present itself, I wasn't worthy of it.
And maybe it has something to do with that, but on the drive home from my now-ex's dorm (though I still wonder if I should/could really call her an ex. Sure, we agreed to make things "official", but we still only dated for a few months), I felt my perspective on, well, at the risk of sounding over-dramatic or overly romantic, everything, being to change.
And I guess that's what the title of this post is about. The things I've begun to realize in the time leading up to and following that break-up.
Above all else, I've realized the importance of connection. If I didn't have a stable friend group again, I don't know where I'd be. Probably still in a stale relationship, clinging on and trying to convince myself that I'm not feeling the way that I'm feeling. I have people to talk with again, to confide in when I feel stressed or depressed. I go out and do things again, which I didn't realize I hadn't really done very much since the pandemic.
But I know that for a lot of people who are/were in the position I had been in, finding friends is difficult. If it weren't for my unique circumstances of being reunited with an old, estranged group of friends, I would absolutely be in the same position. I still really struggle with social anxiety, and talking to new people is a huge struggle for me. So, I've also had some realizations that don't have as much to do with the friendship side of things, and I hope that these can be of some use to people who also struggle with social anxiety.
I know that the idea of "working on yourself" is cliche and overused, so I won't frame it exactly like that. In my opinion, saying it like that makes it sound too daunting and tedious, and having been in those dark, dark places myself, I know that it was the last thing I wanted to hear. So, instead, I like to think of it this way. It's more like living in spite of your circumstances. Over the course of this past year, I essentially shut my life down, because I was so convinced that there was no point, because I felt that I knew that I would never be loved or accepted. Now, I feel an urge to go on living for myself, almost in direct spite of the fear that I may be forever alone. It's a fear that I still deal with, and who knows, maybe things will end up that way.
And, I suppose, that leads into my main realization, which is sort of an extension/restatement of the last one, now that I think about it. I now feel the desire to accumulate enough in my life, to reach a point where I am satisfied enough, that I can rest knowing that I will be okay, with or without a relationship. Before, my self-worth was almost entirely attached to my relationship status, and my lack of romantic experience. Now, I realize that a relationship can only come when I don't need it, or at least don't feel that I need it. Being a huge nerd and a writer, I think a lot about quotes from books, shows, movies, and games that have stuck with and there's one from God of War: Ragnarok that comes to mind here (by the way, I actually highly recommend playing or watching a playthrough of God of War 2018 and Ragnarok if you've struggled with masculinity in the same way I have, the music and cutscenes from those games have actually helped to pull me out of some mental spirals about my self-worth and identity as a man). It comes from a scene in which Kratos confronts his younger self, and is trying to decide if he is willing/ready to be a god again:
"Should I lose everything and everyone, will there still be enough left inside so that I do not become you? I do not know. But I have hope."
It's a quote that resonates with me now more than ever (even though it's from a DLC that just came out around Christmas, lol). I know now that I want to get to a place where there is enough left inside me that I know I'll never fall into that dark mental state again.
Something else that I've noticed has happened is the return of my passions for my hobbies and interests, especially for writing. I don't want to sound too arrogant, but I think I've begun to realize an important goal for my writing. If I'm lucky enough, I want to be able to write and release stories that explore masculinity and isolation, and, if I can, I want to create stories that can help guide other young men and boys who have struggled in the way I have and continue to do. I want to create characters who serve as positive male role models, who are emotionally strong, intelligent, and kind. I want to write stories of personal redemption, and show that no one is truly ever too far gone to be able to recover. If my writing could help even just one person who is struggling, then I would consider my career to be a success.
At the risk of being too cheesy, I'd like to end this very long-winded post with another quote, this one from a YouTube channel I recently discovered, and one I would highly recommend to just about anyone: Cinema Therapy. It's from their video about "A Silent Voice", which also happens to be one of my favorite movies, and one of my main inspirations when it comes to the kinds of stories I want to tell.
"Depression doesn't go away, doesn't lift for most people. But there's a capacity to feel again. There's a capacity to feel joy. The cure for so many things is connection. And we may think 'no one want to connect with me.' But we just need to find the right people."
I think the only thing I would add to that is that, in my opinion, the connection can also be with yourself.

2024.05.16 19:07 cfalnevermore My Messed Up Town: The Weird Nocturnal Hippy Chick

Here we are again in the shit stew that is the Fallowveil trailer park. We’ve got soul eating strippers, jobs that kill us, and plenty of weirdos, both the trailer trash and the potentially paranormal variety. It’s the place where even your own computer sometimes threatens to kill you. I can’t tell if I should be worried, or annoyed that all my neighbors have such irresponsible web habits. I know it’s not me that brings in all these machine wiping viruses.
So even though I got a system error that literally said “you’re useless and you should die” I’m less interested in that. Stupid thing. Like I don’t already know I’m useless. That’s not what I’m depressed about.
Well… I suppose it's tangentially related.
I hope anyone reading will forgive me. I’m feeling the sting of rejection right now. It was really stupid of me to ask. Especially now. Nobody here really likes me. They’ve only been nice to me as a courtesy because I was almost involved in a god damn shootout. And my idiot self decided that was the perfect time to push one of my few friends all the way away. Never ask your friends out on dates. It ruins everything.
So there’s this woman. I’ve talked about her in the past. Trista Ramone. She lives in the far back corner of the trailer park. You can instantly tell which unit is hers because she’s covered every square inch of the property with gardens and a rabbit hutch. The place usually has beads and colorful flags hanging on its walls as well. She’s kind of a right winger’s nightmare. I know some of those flags represent various lgbtq plus communities.
She and I have been friendly in the past. We’re both night shift workers. We crossed paths quite a bit going to and from work so we struck up a friendship over the years.
Let’s just ripped the band aid off. Recently I’ve started thinking I had… stronger feelings for Trista. I got stupid and decided to tell her about them. She wasn’t interested. I get why. We have very different lifestyles. I like meat, and she thinks the meat industry is murder. I’m not willing to give up meat, and she’s not willing to give up her beliefs. It's as simple as that. Now things are incredibly awkward with one of my closer friends and I’m still spiraling into self loathing, where I belong.
She swore up and down that she absolutely still wants to be friends with me, but I’m not sure I believe her. The look she gave me when I told her I’d like to ask her out. It looked like sadness, but a small part of me is convinced it was pity, or worse, disgust and loathing, and that small part gave me ever shuts the fuck up. But anyway, she gave me permission to write about her.
She is one of the creepy fixtures of our little neighborhood after all. She told me to make her seem as insane and scary as I possibly could and that she should get to kill me at the end. She also handed me a few of her high school yearbooks, advised me to chat with another neighbor of ours who she went to school with, and to only use creepy rumors for the rest.
Part of me is really willing to describe her as awful, but that’s just my anger. I don’t like that part of me. Trista’s not a bad person at all. She’s just weird and she doesn’t want to date me. God damn it, Petunia’s right. I need therapy.
So, I’ve told the story of the sexy, scary lady living in a polycule here in the trailer park. I think she’s got a bigger heart than she lets on. I’ve talked about the stories surrounding the Schroeder Slaughterhouse. Now let’s talk about the hippy everyone thinks is a vampire.
She’s a taller woman, maybe five-seven or eight, and she’s skinny. Her typical wardrobe is… interesting. Try to imagine your typical new-age hippy/stoner girl, wearing colorful sarongs, crop-tops, beanies, baggy sweaters, T-shirts with colorful sayings on them, sandals, boots woven from some sort of exotic plant, beaded necklaces, bracelets, a few too many piercings and some intricate tattoos. Can you picture that kind of person? Well, take that and dip them in “goth” dye. Everything is black, and contrasts to her pale white complexion, her eyes are this unusual violet color, and then make the woman wearing all that seem kind of depressed about something. That’s the look Trista has going on. Like if Wednesday Addams was forced to dress up for Hippy Day.
I’ve heard people call her an emo vampire, but as a former emo myself, she doesn’t fill out all the criteria. She doesn’t typically wear any super tight pants or cake on the eyeshadow. I guess she’s just Trista. It might sound weird (and it is) but the whole thing suits her. Her style, tattoos, and complexion all create this image of skinny vampiric waif with a mysterious past and a freaky sarcastic attitude and I found the whole thing… kinda hot.
Trista keeps to herself. She’s made the most out of her little corner of the trailer park. Like I said, she decked out her unit with garden squares, and a Rabbit pen. No idea why she’s allowed to do that. A lot of these places don’t allow pets. I heard she was also trying to put in a beehive too, but her neighbors are fighting her on that one. Our park is a bit too condensed for bees. She has a permit to grow hemp, but of course it’s not for recreational use. She treats it and uses it to weave things like handbags, clothes, and other stuff. There’s a consignment store in town that sells all kinds of things Trista has crafted herself. So she’s handy and self sufficient too. She paints, she carves wood, she weaves, she crochets, she sews, and who knows what else. She’s so good at her little crafts that apparently she’s able to support herself just selling them and working part time at the Moonlight Inn outside of town.
She’s also relatively friendly. I almost feel bad calling her weird, but here’s the thing, I’ve seen some REALLY weird shit. People jokingly call her a vampire, and she seems to embrace that, but part of me seriously wonders. The big clue is, like I mentioned, she’s completely nocturnal. She’s always asleep during the day, and every blind and curtain is drawn tight. The one time she came out during the day, she had on this full body suit with a helmet with UV glass and everything. Even then, she only showed up to give Petunia a hug, before leaving again.
That was the first time I saw Trista, come to think of it. I was kind of intrigued. It was kind of hard not to be when someone shows up to a community cookout in a freaking astronaut suit. I approached Petunia after she left.
“Who the heck was that?” I wondered.
“MASON! I’m so glad you could make it! You’ve been here about three months now! How’d that job interview go?”
“Oh. It went well. I might be doing janitorial work soon.”
“Night shift?”
“Maybe. I’m not sure.”
“If it’s the night shift, you’ll definitely meet the person who just left. That’s Trista. She’s the girl with the rabbits in the far corner. Poor girl. She’s got a really bad skin condition. Can’t let sunlight touch her.”
“Oh. Is she like… albino or something?”
“No, she’s got pigment. I don’t remember what the condition is called. I guess it started in high school or something. You’d have to ask her. And hey! If you work the night shift, you’ll probably get to chat with her!”
Petunia wasn’t wrong. I started working as a nighttime janitor for a number of local businesses. That was when I first started noticing the pale goth hippy. She rides around on a moped, with her dark hair and her sarong barely billowing behind her. I couldn’t see her face through the helmet, but she waved to me as she passed by.
The next time I saw her, she was jogging, but here’s where it gets weird. When I first stepped outside, all I saw was a blur. It actually startled me as I whipped toward it, but then there was this skinny tattooed pixie, somehow still looking like a stonehippy/vampire in jogging gear. I swear she was moving inhumanly fast when I first noticed her. That was when we introduced ourselves. She actually jogged over to say hello.
“Hey! You’re the new guy right?”
“Oh, uh, yeah. My name’s Mason!” I reached out to shake the pretty girl’s hand, like an awkward loser. She smirked and shook my hand. Her grip was weirdly strong, and a bit cold.
“I’m Trista. I’m the weirdo in the back with the rabbits.”
“Trista… oh, are you the one who has a thing with sunlight? I think Petunia mentioned you.”
“Yup! That’s me. Xerodoma pigmentosum. Sunlight hurts. I hate that it hurts.” She lamented.
“That’s gotta be rough,” I said sympathetically.
“You get used to it. You work at night?”
“Yeah. Works better for me.”
“I get that.”
And so on and so on. She’s pretty cool, with a bit of hilarious snark in there. And she secretly procured recreational weed she was willing to share. I kept working the night shift just hoping for another chance to talk to her and possibly buy a joint. Eventually she invited me over to share a joint. The inside of her place was actually pretty sparse and spartan compared to the outside. Though she was a fan of hanging beads. Most of the main room was taken up by her various crafting projects and supplies. Hemp weaves, some paintings, and even a wood carving of what I think was a rabbit, but it wasn’t anywhere near complete.
I followed her to her kitchen where she reached into the very back of her pantry and pulled out a shoebox. Inside was her stash, but there was something else which I found very strange. It was a pack of syringes and a thing I assume is to sterilize syringes. I know what you’re thinking, and that was my first thought too. It’s a poor neighborhood, the woman already smokes weed illegally, it’s not that big a shock that maybe she was involved in other drugs too. I decided not to ask at the time. We shared our joint, and we laughed, a lot. She made fun of me for being a lightweight, while I got completely hypnotized staring at the patterns of a shawl she had woven.
Months went by and we got closer, but I couldn’t forget those syringes. After a while I got worried. I’ve seen what heroine does to people. So the next time I went over to smoke and eat (vegan) pizza with her, I asked.
“Trista? Are you using anything other than weed?”
“Drugs?”
“Yeah.”
“No. Why?”
“You can tell me if you are.”
“Mason, sweetheart, I’m a stoner. I don’t fuck around with anything else and I never have.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Okay. Can I ask what that set of syringes are for?”
“Oh. In my stash box? Those are… part of my condition. I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Oh. Is it like… embarrassing?”
“Yeah. So don’t ask. Can we just watch a movie?”
So I don't ask anymore. But I still have no idea what she does with those syringes. Based on what I read about that Xerodoma Pigmentosum thing she says she has, I have no clue what she would need to inject herself with.
Another time she asked me to check on her rabbits for her during the day, as her usual “sitter” had something come up. All I had to do was chop up the lettuce and carrots she left out. As I was enjoying the adorable fluffy faces, one of Trista’s neighbors, a woman named Bridget, poked her head outside her door.
“Hey. Do you know what Trista injects those rabbits with?”
“I… what?”
“I’ve seen her use syringes on those rabbits. She said she was just giving them medicine, but I swear I see her inject them every week.”
“I… I wouldn't know. She just asked me to feed them.”
“I love Trista, but that always seemed so weird. She has to know vaccines are a hoax!” I tuned the woman out after that one. My mind was on that set of syringes. Why would she be using them on rabbits? These things were her pets.
I was starting to crush on her by then. But I couldn’t help feeling weirded out by that. I was actually going to confront her, but the next time I came to visit, she was literally inside the Rabbit hutch, on her back, squealing with delight as her rabbit friends nuzzled and played with her.
“Bonnibelle! That tickles! Marcy! No chewing. Finn? Watch where you’re sticking that foot! Jake? Where are you? EEEEE Lumpy! Not the neck!”
It was as silly and adorable as it sounds. She was forced to whip herself upright when two of her little friends tried to burrow under her dress. She finally stood up with a laugh, cradling a rabbit in her arms and cooing at it.
There was just no way in hell this woman was doing anything that would hurt these animals. Bridget is a paranoid antivax weirdo anyway. If Trista was using syringes on the rabbits, I was convinced it was only for their benefit.
So life went on. I got more and more reclusive over the years. Petunia, Trista, and my next door neighbor Fred were the only things keeping me remotely connected to the outside. And so we get to now. So let’s see. What are the stories about the weird vampire woman?
Well, there’s the fact that she jogs at night, solo, in a poor neighborhood. Petunia keeps the shitty people contained and behaving for the most part, but I still wouldn’t exactly call it safe, especially for a young skinny woman. But she does it without a care in the world.
There’s one strange event that some people like to connect to this. I never knew this guy, but from what I hear he was a total weirdo who leered at anyone even remotely female. And this is despite the fact he was married. His name was Josh.
I remember him a bit. He’s the guy that Petunia chased away from one of her barbecues. Supposedly he was heard saying inappropriate things to the groups of ten year old girls that were playing in the bounce house Petunia rented. Telling them how pretty they were. Trying to coax them to take off their jackets. Police reports were filed but ultimately nothing could be proven. The guy's wife, Carole, always defends him for some reason.
But anyway, I remember hanging out with Trista one night a little over a year ago. She hadn’t gone jogging like she normally did. I asked her what was up with that.
“That weirdo, Josh has started catcalling when I pass his place. It weirds me out.”
“There aren’t other people who do that at night? I’m still shocked you jog alone.”
“Not like this. I can flip off a wolf whistler. But this guy… he keeps trying to get me to stop and talk to him, and when I don’t? He shouts about my ass. I’m gonna have to talk to Petunia about that shithead, if anybody can reign him in, it’s her.”
I’m gonna guess she never got a chance. Two days later, the whole town was awoken by sirens. I was getting ready for my shift when I heard them. I walked down the road a bit to see if I could figure out what was going on. The cops were heading toward the other side of the park, so I couldn’t see much. But I did notice Trista, in her jogging gear, skulking in the shadows. I wondered if she was in trouble. But before I could call out to her, she sprinted straight to Petunia's house and banged on the door. Petunia welcomed her inside, and that was all I saw. I still wasn’t sure what was going on, so I just shrugged and headed to work, figuring I’d text Trista later.
I didn’t learn till later that Josh was found dead. He was lying prone, face down, partly hidden by bushes at the edge of the park. His neck was cut open. He’d bled out rapidly. He had a knife in his hand, and officially it’s believed he fell on it and accidentally killed himself. There was a cocktail of drugs in his system so most people accept that explanation. But others swear they saw Trista out for her jog around the same time Josh would have been bleeding to death. She got questioned, and she swore she didn’t see anything. Without evidence, there was nothing else that could be proven.
Trista’s a friend. I know that guy was being creepy to her. So I’m happy to take her word for what happened, even if my seeing her going to Petunia’s pokes a bit of a hole in that. I can’t be sure it was Trista though. So I’m not saying a word. But if a certain creep attacked a certain lady who is rumored to be a vampire, it’s not that surprising to me that he ended up dead after bleeding to death. I’m not all that broken up about it.
I’m not the one spreading that story. Josh’s wife was the one who started the rumor. So now some people are even more convinced that the weird nocturnal hippy chick is secretly a vampire.
She’s no killer. No matter what they say. She would only have defended herself.
So that’s all the stories I’ve heard that have any credibility to them. There’s more people who swear she and Petunia perform weird rituals, and people who saw her moving “inhumanly fast” and such.
But now I have to share what I found in the yearbooks Trista gave me. I wasn’t really expecting much. I checked her senior yearbook out first. She looks about the same. Pale, goth, hippy, and sort of sad. She kind of looks even sadder in these photos if I’m being honest, but that’s high school for you. She graduated in the top half of her class, no sports or extracurriculars. I’m left wondering how she managed to go to school at the time of sun was so bad for her. I’ll have to ask her about that. So nothing really new there.
It was the yearbook from her junior year where things got really interesting. I was in shock when I found her. Trista is somehow impossible to miss, but unrecognizable all at once. She’s full of color! She wore more typical tie dye hippy attire. Bright vibrant pinks, reds, blues, greens, and yellows, in every photo, and holy shit was she busy. Captain of the soccer team, first chair flutist, president of the “green living” club and the “vegan alliance,” top ten in her class, it was all incredible. I think the main reason I didn’t recognize her was her skin. It was tan, as though she were out in the sun a lot. Furthermore there were photos of her playing sports and standing outside in bright sunlight.
It was like her disease wasn’t there, which confused me. She told me it was something called Xeroderma Pigmentosa. But that’s a genetic condition. She would have had that from birth.
I sent her a text, wondering about this.
- Hey! Just went through your yearbooks. What happened? You had color? Did you discover Linkin Park?
- My disease happened. Right at the end of Jr. year. That’s why I wasn’t there for the final class photo.
- But your disease is genetic… isn’t it?
- I guess it was dormant in me.
- So it just… happened?
- Pretty much.
- I’m sorry.
- I got over it. Mostly. It was hard. My parents were both hardcore vegan naturalists and we lived in a place that was all natural light and such, so I had to live in a shed for a bit while they built a space for me. But in my family? We kinda lean into whatever life throws at us. It took months of depression to come to terms with it. All of a sudden I couldn’t be out in the sun, and I had new dietary needs that absolutely required non-vegan sources. So I leaned into it. I was a vampire now. I can dig dark colors and “vampire style.” I could make it my own by avoiding leather. And I’d be as vegan as I possibly could.
- You’re kind of awesome.
- Damn straight. So I learned to love the night too and now, here I am.
I gained new respect for her after that. Frankly I feel kinda shitty about making fun of her for being a vampire. There might not be anything paranormally weird about her after all.
She sent me one more text telling me I should talk to a guy named Frankie. She’d gone to school with him. He’s a decent enough guy. Works in the Bicounty mall in town.
I had to wait a day or two for another of Petunia’s get togethers to talk to him.
“Hey!” I said awkwardly as I tried to figure out how to strike up conversation with someone I haven’t really spoken to in a long time. “Frankie, right?”
“Oh. Yeah. Been a while. How are you Mason? You okay after that whole thing at Red Nights?”
“I’m trying to be. Look, I’ll cut to the chase. You went to school with Trista Ramone, right?”
“Ol’ Boho Ramone? Yeah. We were sort of friendly. But I was a jerk to vegans back then. Why do you ask?”
“I’ve been hanging out with her. She’s being all mysterious.” He chuckled at that. “She said I should talk to you to learn more about her… weirdness? Everyone thinks she’s a vampire now.”
“She’s totally a vampire. I have no idea what else to call her?”
“Why do you say that?”
“What did she tell you about school?”
“Nothing. She just showed me two yearbooks. Between Junior and Senior year she went from colorful club president, to lonely vampire, because of her disease.”
“Nah man. I don’t want to talk bad about her. But she was kind of a bitch, junior year. She wasn’t just a colorful vegan. She was one of those “holier than thou” types who scoffed and talked down to anyone who dared to eat meat. Her “hippy” thing meant she never hung out with the popular girls but still, she acted like she owned the place at times. I was friends with this weird guy named Steven Jones. He was just kind of a weirdo. Skulking around in the background, you know? He HATED Trista. For a while I totally understood. I thought she was kinda stuck up. But this guy was like… irrationally enraged by that girl’s existence. I guess he tried to ask her out when he was a freshman and she politely declined. But he took that shit personally.”
“Huh. So like… why’s that matter?”
“Because Steven kept saying to anyone who gave him a second look, that he was gonna ‘ruin’ her. Never elaborated. But then the last month of school rolls around, Trista gets assaulted by an unknown assailant and a week later she’s got this new disease. Meanwhile, Steven spent a week strutting around the school looking smug, and saying ‘she got what she deserved.’ Then he disappears too. Teachers said he moved away.”
“She was assaulted?”
“Yeah. Someone in a face wrap tackled her while she was at one of her protests at the meat factory. The dude freaking BIT her.”
“Jesus.”
“Yeah. I was there. I came to the protest. I’ll admit I was trying to hit on Trista or one of the other girls there. But yeah. Dude dressed in all gray with a face wrap just charged in and went right for Trista. Knocked her down, bit her like a freaking zombie, then ran away before anyone could stop him. Didn’t even take his face wrap off. It was freaky, man.”
“What the actual fuck.”
“That’s what we all said. Trista needed a stitch. But while she was at the hospital, I guess she started getting more symptoms. She was out for the rest of the year. From then on, she was like she is now. Total vampire.”
“Was Steven a vampire?”
“I dunno. Probably. Little dickhead is what he is. Must have been him that attacked Trista, but nobody could prove it. Bite mark didn’t match or something. So why are you asking? You hang out with her at night right? You asking her out or something?”
“Oh. No. Just a friend.”
That was all I really learned from Frankie. It’s quite a story, and it’s full of unknowns that Trista refuses to explain. So I guess I’ll let readers be the judge. Is she a “real” vampire? Or just a weirdo? All I know is, she’s totally standing behind me right now and now I’m dead. Bleh.
I did come back to life to talk to Trista once I finished writing this. She enjoyed it. I may as well include that interaction.
I went to her place on my night off. She read my take on her and what the neighbors thought and she grinned. “Ha! I’m a total monster!” She chuckled. “So. What do YOU think, Mason? Am I a vampire?” She cocked an eye and playfully gnashes her teeth at me, making a pleasant little click.
I sighed. “No idea. You’re Trista. And… you’re my friend. I’m sorry if I made things awkward.”
She looked surprised by that. “Aw. Thanks Mason. You’re my friend too. It’s okay. I’m flattered.”
“You don’t have to explain.”
“So we’re cool?”
“Absolutely not. We’re both weird shut ins.” She laughed. It was good to hear her laugh. It made me happy.
“Yeah but I got the ‘mysterious vampire’ thing going.”
“You have dirt in your hair from rolling around with bunnies. And you’re a vegan.”
“Bite me.”
“Says the vampire.”
“You know, if I were a vampire, I could have bitten you when we both went to the slaughterhouses a few weeks ago.”
“That just makes me stupid.”
“You’re not stupid, Mason. You’re not a loser either.”
“So. You know of any other good spooky town stories that I can do next?
“Oh, sure. You ever heard the tale of Salome? She was a witch who would mash up the seeds of a Sinapis Alba plant to make a diabolical potion she’d dump on herself. They called her the ‘Witch of the Sands.’”
I’m embarrassed to admit it took me four days to realize Trista was just fucking with me. I only figured it out when I looked up Sinapis Alba and learned that mashing the seeds just makes mustard. “Salomi the sand-witch.” Well played, vampire hippy…

2024.05.16 19:01 Excellent_Rich4930 My wife and I have been married for 9 years and have been together for 13 years, she has recently re-connected with her first BF from high school and I can't stop letting it bother me.

Just a little backstory, this EX was her first everything but he was also supremely emotionally abusive. He would spread rumors about her, and essentially ruined her social life in high school. They only spent 8-10 months together total before he turned on her. It has always been a source of trauma for her.
Recently, he came messaging her on FB. He kept trying to apologize and kept messaging her every few months. Finally she answered back and they started talking. I told her I supported facing him to get any closure and help heal any wounds she's carrying. I never once had an issue with her talking to this Ex or any Ex. I've never been the jealous type, I trust her completely even though I don't trust this dude for one second with his strange intentions of reaching out to her 20 years later.
Anyway, fast forward 2 weeks, I notice her texting non-stop for hours one evening. I knew immediately is wasn't just a friend, I knew it was him. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to be "that guy". But my stomach was in a knot seeing her so engaged with her Ex.
A few days later she said she wanted to let me know that they spoke on the phone and are now texting, and that he's really changed. That she unpacked this all with her therapist and they both think it would be good to forgive and move on and have this connection. They are now meeting for dinner and a movie to meet in person for the first time in 20+ years to unpack everything. She subtlety mentioned he warned him she doesn't look the same as she did in high school, and that he re-assured her she will always be beautiful and that of all the people he dated she treated him the best. I asked if that was her goal, to get this male attention from someone else from her past. And she admitted that it felt good to hear it from someone else besides me. All things I understand. I totally do. Being together with the same person for that long I'm sure brings on its monotony. But I've always strived to make her feel wanted, desired, appreciated, loved, cared for. And now I question what I'm not providing her.
I asked her if I was lacking anything that she is seeking in someone else, and she said no that we are fine and that this is something different. And to her credit she has not acted different with me at all, we are still close, there's no awkwardness or distance other than me getting stress cramps and trying to hide how all this affects me. At the end of the day it still feels like it's an "emotional affair". But I'm scared of even bringing that up because I don't want to come across as some immature "jealous" husband. He is now on her FB, "hearting/loving" every post of hers, yes even the ones with me in them. She then asked me why I was checking who likes her posts. I told her I didnt, that when I go to like a post of hers I just see right there he's already there with a "heart" on it.
I know it sounds childlike and immature, and I've seen similar posts here with this same situation. But the fact that my wife is enjoying the attention but assures me that she has zero feelings for him and that they just talk about movies and music still doesn't make me feel any better. I can't sleep most nights now, this knot in my stomach won't go away. Last night I smoked 4 joints and downed 2 glasses of scotch to try and knock myself out but it was like my body was immune to the effects, I spent the whole night wondering why she's doing this even though she's explained it from her POV several times now. I trust her 100%, but my the stress and anxiety just won't go away and now I need to hide it because I fear of making her think I'm some controlling person that wants to dictate who she can or cannot speak to. I don't want that, that's not who I am. I honestly told her I'd be fine if this was some random guy friend, or even a stranger from Reddit or something. But the fact that this guy not only has been with her, but also treated her poorly, just makes it all weird to me.
I don't know what I can possibly do without making her resent me. I don't want a world where she cuts off this guy fully and then resents me for making her feel like she needs to do that. But from the very beginning this whole thing was supposed to be about getting closure, and the surprise of it turning into texting and now meeting up took me by surprise. She's been very open about it, she isn't hiding anything. But part of me feels like he's making moves on her, hitting on her, or just being flirty with her. I haven't seen any of the texts, and I would never look unless my wife willingly showed me (I havent asked to see them because I really do trust her, I dont want to go down that road).
Anyway, it's been throwing me for a loop, and I miss being able to sleep without a painful knot in my chest and stomach. As someone who's been passed over many times before meeting my wife, those experiences naturally pop up in my head. But I know she'd never do anything since this dude is a mess. He may have a GF but he's unemployed, went to jail and has a criminal record, and never got an education. I just don't know what to make of this, is this an emotional affair? Am I being a weak selfish person wanting this dude to just go back to living in the shadows? I just feel all out of sorts over it and don't know how I can even approach this without being the bad guy.

2024.05.16 18:53 hydra1280 If I was MC series: RWBY breaking free from the rules as a transmigration story unless you want me to be 4 people

Seen: Season 9
Stepping back, I go all the way to the magical age, I wait for things to happen and allow the gods to destroy the world but instead I let myself be known to them, giving my greetings and sucking ass to the destruction god. The difference between the original is that I stick around for the aftermath after getting myself some elixir of eternity, talking and getting along with Salem until and making her think I am a manifestation of the mind and make sure she doesn't go inside the pool of destruction, but ultimately leaving her alone at the last legs of the journey so she can fall in later without my positive influence.
When Ozpin is reincarnated, I once again wait for him to begin moving and meet Salem, I then allow them to fight and return for my misdirection technique where I trick Salem, giving Ozpin enough leverage to get the girls out. I then lay the guilt on, HARD, about how she killed her own daughters and how she could have died millenniums ago if not for her pride and ego, being 1000x worse than her father. In the event this mental manipulation solves the problem and she admits her mistakes then yippee, but, otherwise, I continue with my plans by hiding the children and allowing them to find relationships while I continue researching the grimm. I take them to the lower islands on the map, clear out the grimm and use my own which I would either have tamed or learned how to herd and fake extreme grimm density. Slowly I build my population and selectively breed the people to be taller, stronger and not alter Ozpin's reincarnation cycle by using my own stock. When we start reaching modern stuff, I kill Cinder before she has the chance to take half of Summer's powers and allow Pyrrha to possess the half-dead corpse. I would have also come out at some point, possibly with my men, to continue the heavily guarded city beyond the mountains, using it as an emotional sponge to massively decrease the grimm population. Meanwhile, over the years and well after exploration had finished, the other islands in the south near Vacuo would have been cleared out and populated. Using these islands, a lot of resources would have been sent to Menagerie so their paradise/asylum/home was more than a tropical tourist spot with terrorists. Similar events would be done around the world like expanding Atlas with a city on its Eastern side that exploited the same deep dust veins.
Come the attack at Beacon, well that is simply an event that shouldn't be stopped, instead, the forces were to be relocated elsewhere and when everyone left with plot significance the soldiers could come in and clear out the rest. The story would continue until the ladies got to Atlas, at which point the plan to leave the planet would be progressed while I take the knowledge wish granter, killing Salem's agents and allowing Atlas to safely leave orbit while the spacial bridge was opened for the people under Atlas. Finally, entering the 9th season, I jump down and eat the time fruit, giving Jaune a wink as I surpass him and vanish to the beginning. Watching the gods grow up, I capture their destroyer and teach them responsibility before beating the shit out of them, knowing that their journey of discovery will force them to repeat their mistakes. With what needed to be accomplished done, I take the leaf and get behind Jaune once more so I can go exploring, collecting and learning. Once I have seen all I possibly can, I end up back at the tree using the leaves and go to the present, saving the cat and the demon for my trump card, modifying the lamp to hold them and give the cat the answers it wanted while making the demon more humane and able to change his size. I then once again leave team RWBY and friends with the cat and demon by my side with a bunch of leaves and a seed.
Now back and ahead of the story, I reconnect with my people, happily hearing how things have gone as directed and that Atlas has positioned itself above Vacuo, sending down massive amounts of resources upon request and establishing an inter-planetary defence network that utilises mechs, asteroids, lasers and drop pods. The best part is that after getting the help of the Tree, the final part of my plan has been completed where I reveal myself, showing off my army of faunus, silver-eyed, semblance-using, magic users. The best part is that the Tree wasn't just used for a time skip and secretly helped complete my final form.
Like Salem, her immortality allowed her to be drenched in grimm energy which would have eroded anything else, giving her control and partial traits, as well as a liking for destruction. But the truth of the grimm component is that it is like Venom from Marvel and has the opportunity to harmonise cells as free parts that work with even greater determination and vigour. Mixing it with a body is hazardous and wouldn't have the intended effect and using an immortal simply creates a balance because there is no means of contention. But since I spent the time gaining pawns and researching dust, I would have finally been able to conduct a hybrid formula of dust and grimm that could be injected into exceptionally strong individuals or immortals with a proper synchronisation rate. As for the cat, it offered the potential to enhance things even further by using its supernatural and reality-defying powers to simulate a consciousness for the grimm-dust cells that merged with my immortal ones, allowing the new mind to be absorbed and enhance my abilities over my own body. As for the demon and leaves, they have a different purpose, one that others thought wasn't needed when Salem arrived after a while with her flying gorilla and dragon fleet with a bit of native desert-type grim and migrating herds. When they came, using the satellite array and infinite powers of creation to create defences only made up in a child's imagination, also using Penny and her ice abilities to clear out and flatten desert mounds. Speaking of Penny, her soul project was mass-produced using those of a good nature, meanwhile, Penny became like the director or big sister to all the other androids with their cybernetic superpowers. Something that would be a massive help against Salem's latest onslaught of epic and never-ending hellfire and rattlesnakes. Eventually, Salem would be beaten and cornered where she would be sealed and imprisoned thanks to the combined efforts of everyone, making an overwhelming last-stand victory. But Salem's wishes wouldn't go unfulfilled and she would get to see part of what she wished for desperately, seeing the gods descend upon the world where they would be met with me. If you were properly reading by now, you would know I gave these gods PTSD once I showed my maddened face and gave them a roast about their failings as gods and abandonment of their creations before talking about the philosophies and sophistry for why humanity should live by mentioning everything, from our flaws to our cute quirks to our outstanding commitments. The gods would be made to seriously consider as they were buttered up by their shrines being decorated and freshly offered offerings. Finally, though, what would be the final straw is the tea which would have the leaves pushed into their mouths, bringing them back to the Tree for sorting, alls all that ends well

2024.05.16 18:49 WerSunu Update on Giza GPR findings

Here is the link to actual research paper and two press releases from MOTA:
[in Open Access]: Motoyuki Sato et al., "GPR and ERT Exploration in the Western Cemetery in Giza, Egypt," in: Archaeological Prospection - In Advance of Print, 5 May 2024 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/arp.1940 "A geophysical exploration employing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was conducted at the Western Cemetery, Giza, Egypt, in 2021–23 (..) We believe we found an anomaly: a combination of a shallow structure connected to a deeper structure. The shallow structure, which is L-shaped in the horizontal plane, 10 m by 10 m, was clearly imaged by GPR. It seems to have been filled with sand, which means it was backfilled after it was constructed. It may have been an entrance to the deeper structure. (..)" -- See next entry for a caveat.

2024.05.16 18:45 r_aviolimama Zero tolerance for shaming

Some of you may have caught an absolutely astonishing post this morning shaming moms who (from the sound of the comments) have either ever used formula or stopped pumping(?)
I missed the whole post but I can see the first part of it and the comments and I am SHOCKED. Needless to say, OP has been permanently banned.
We have a zero tolerance policy for harassment and things of that nature. Please please always report these kind of posts or message us directly (myself and u/purr_immakitten are the most active) and we’ll handle it. If you can screenshot or note down usernames that’s helpful for once they delete it and we can no longer see it.
I sincerely apologize to anyone who saw and was hurt or affected by that post, please know it was just someone spouting a bunch of rage and shame and it does NOT ring true whatsoever!!

2024.05.16 18:32 MyInnerCulture Living Well With Chiari Without Surgery - Improving Overall Health

For anyone who has been following, I've been sharing everything I've learned about living well with Chiari without surgery to this sub for the past few weeks. Here are links to previous posts:
Living Well With Chiari - Without Surgery
Take a Life Inventory
Reducing Triggers
The next step for me was Improving My Overall Health. Living well with Chiari starts with living well everywhere else.
Meditation:
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times. Meditation is good for you. It’s not a woo woo thing. It’s a creative thing.
My first real experience with meditation was with Dr. Joe Dispenza. His book You Are the Placebo was the catalyst that started me down another road--one that didn’t involve doctors who didn’t know what to do with me, and reliance on prescription medication.
The catalyst for major change in my life, and my introduction into healing myself.
If you haven’t heard of Dr. Dispenza but you’re at all interested in changing any facet of your life, health, personality, or habits, he’s worth Googling. The guided meditation that accompanied You Are the Placebo was intended to change something about my health by helping me create and connect with the version of health that I wanted to experience instead. Every time the mediation ended, I felt strong, empowered, and hopeful. And I don’t think it’s any coincidence that today I feel (almost) as good as the version I created in my own mind, long before I saw any physical change in my body.
We forget--especially when we are sick and in pain--that we have so much more power over our circumstances and our bodies than we realize. Dr. Dispenza seeks to remind us of who we are and what we are capable of, and show us how to actually change our minds to change our health.
You don’t have to get on board with Dispenza (though you can find his free meditations on Youtube). Admittedly, his work goes deep, and you might not be interested or ready to go there. Any meditation, even sitting for five minutes of quiet breathing is going to help calm your raging thoughts and the body that’s probably feeling too much.

Hydration:
Simple, right? Drink more water. Fluids in a well-hydrated body flow better, and let’s face it—for those of us with crowding at the back of our skulls, flow is vital. Flow is life.

Put Good Stuff In:
Fruits and vegetables
High quality vitamins/supplements—the best you can budget
Detox—naturally with food or with the help of a detox program. I have done Alejandro Junger’s Clean program a few times, and felt amazing afterwards. It’s an easy to follow program outlined in his book Clean. You don’t need to buy the food/supplements from him (I didn’t) but that used to be an option—not sure if it still is. I also use the supplement Clean Slate by Root.
Juice—and not the kind out of a bottle. Juice your own fruits and vegetables for a nutrient bomb to your cells. Check out the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead if you want to see how beneficial fresh juice can be.
Smoothies—some would argue it’s better than juicing because with smoothies you keep the fiber. I like them because they are a great way to get nutrients into my body quickly.

Limit the Bad Stuff:
This should be a no-brainer, but it’s very easy to get caught up in habits and not as easy to change them.
Prior to the Chiari diagnosis, I smoked for a few years. I’m not proud of it, but there you have it. As soon as the Chiari pain started—which was triggered by coughing—it was easy to quit. I haven’t smoked a cigarette since.
Alcohol was a different story. I have a long, complicated history with alcohol. For part of this journey, red wine actually helped relieve the coughs, and that’s part of why I drank 1-3 glasses every night for years. I kicked that nightly alcohol habit in January 2024…long after it stopped being necessary to keep me from coughing. Now I’ve noticed that if I do partake in a few drinks, the Chiari wakes the fuck up with a roar. It honestly takes the fun out of a cocktail! I had to be several months out of that habit, though, to realize how much better I felt on a daily basis without it.

Essential Oils:
I know, I know, they aren’t for everyone. But they’ve helped me so much that I will post separately outlining how I use them with Chiari.
Enzymes:
I debated mentioning this because I know they won’t be available for everyone. Since they do play a significant role in my overall health, it wouldn’t be right not to talk about them.
The enzymes I’m referring to are made by Loomis, a company that specializes in enzymes for nearly every organ and system in the human body. The catch? You need to order them through Loomis practitioners. Until a few years ago, I happened to work for one. If you’re interested, you can search for a practitioner near you from the Loomis website.
These aren’t your average digestive enzymes (though the importance of a healthy gut cannot be overstated). Mostly I use certain formulas to help ward off that old familiar foe: the cold bug. Just as I never go a day without essential oils, I never miss a chance to take certain enzymes at the first sign of trouble. And like the oils, they’ve done exactly what I need them to do.

you are capable of more. and there is better for you than the way you probably feel if you found this post.

This is just the beginning. It’s true that nothing changes if nothing changes. And changes—even positive ones—can be hard, especially when living with Chiari can suck the life right out of you.
I feel better. Genuinely better. Most days I don’t experience any symptoms. It’s not magic, but I had to pull myself out of the dark and make some changes. If I can do it, so can you.

2024.05.16 18:29 dikercarnivore The Truth About the Carnivore Diet: Does Red Meat Cause Inflammation?

Understanding inflammation and its impact on health

Before we delve into the specific effects of red meat on inflammation, it's important to understand the broader context of inflammation and its implications for our health.
Inflammation is a natural immune response that helps the body defend against infection, injury, and other threats. However, when inflammation becomes chronic or excessive, it can lead to a range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
The facts of our modern diets and lifestyles, characterized by inflammatory grains, sugars, and seed “vegetable” oils, keep our inflammation simmering at a chronic level. Our bodies experience these substances as harmful “antigens.” And it responds by constantly producing antibodies that damage healthy tissues and organs.
The importance of reducing inflammation cannot be overstated.
And at least 60% of the American population have at least one chronic inflammatory condition.

The role of nutrients in red meat and their impact on inflammation

One of the key factors in understanding the relationship between red meat and inflammation is the nutrient profile of red meat.
Red meat is an excellent source of high-quality protein, as well as a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. These nutrients play a crucial role in supporting the body's immune function and reducing inflammatory processes.
There is one other survey study that may provide a more reliable insight into the effects of meat on inflammation. It was conducted by Harvard researchers in 2021 and collected responses from 2029 people on the carnivore diet.
This more restrictive version of the ketogenic diet calls for consuming only animal products, is centered around fatty red meat, and eliminates all plant foods. The researchers found that 89% improved or resolved autoimmune conditions.
Taken together, the preponderance of evidence tells us that red meat is not more inflammatory than non-red meat and oily fish. And that it is likely less inflammatory than carbs.

Fresh red meat is also no longer believed to cause cancer, stroke, or heart disease. Our modern diets and lifestyles, characterized by inflammatory grains, sugars, and seed "vegetable" oils, keep our inflammation simmering at a chronic level. A study from 2007 where participants replaced carbohydrates with red meat showed significant reductions in inflammatory markers.

Cheers Carnivores !

2024.05.16 18:09 Regular-Atmosphere11 Seeking advice on my impostor syndrom

Hi!
I hope someone knowledgeable will be able to guide/help me.
I am 22 years old - my problem is that I have been experiencing a strong impostor syndrome from the beginning. I have done the DIVA test three times with different psychologists. Each time I scored high, and basically, everything fits together rationally. I do indeed recognize the impostor symptom in myself. I discussed this with a friend who is finishing psychology studies and also has ADHD, and he supports my perspective.
Additionally, my father, who committed suicide, most likely also struggled with ADHD (based on the DIVA methodology, I asked the family and matched it to events that complicated his life further, plus, of course, chronic depression).Everything was rather stable until 3 days ago when I had bad lack for a psychiatrist (where I did the last DIVA and a specialist was recommended) - an online visit. I don't want to sound conceited (also, I'm not a doctor), but I had the impression that the psychiatrist I consulted often didn't know the answers to my questions and was evasive. He seemed more interested in my money than in helping and understanding me (I have seen 2 psychologists, 2 therapists, and 3 psychiatrists, so I have a comparison whether someone cares or is genuinely interested). I have scheduled my next appointment with a doctor that is leading ADHD treatment here in Poland
Returning to the point, my impostor syndrome flared up additionally when the psychiatrist stated during the interview that "the symptoms I experience are rather mild, or I somehow manage them, otherwise I would have problems with studying and working" (my professional life is okay, but about 4 times below my potential because I have issues with fluctuations in activity - I work intensely for several days, and then have a few days of a depressive period - it's not like manic-depression, it's rather about activity and the ability to motivate myself to do things, not finding less painful activities, etc.). This surprised me because I perceive them differently (and they seem more concrete than just excusing my inefficiencies). So, of course, I continued the previously started research to feel more at ease.
I was prescribed a dosage that seems non-standard: Medikinet 10mg CR daily, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and I can double it and then report back after finishing. All this has led to many questions and overthinking. The first day, 10mg didn't make much of an impression on me; it settled me a bit, I felt some interest, took the second dose in the afternoon as recommended, and, of course, couldn't sleep (despite 6mg of melatonin).
Yesterday, I took 20mg in the morning and felt the need to organize everything, and I cleaned the whole apartment, including scrubbing under the closet.Despite this, the impostor syndrome is so insidious that I keep wondering if I'm imagining things, over-researched, and adjusted the answers or interpretations of my life and events to fit the thesis. It's generally a terrible issue because I hope that after years of struggling with "depression," it will finally be addressed, and I can stop dealing with such matters and just focus on work - I am 22 years old, and my first visit to a psychiatrist for depression was around 15-16 years old.
Currently, I have the biggest dilemmas in the following areas, and I really hope someone could shed some light or guide me:
  1. **Methylphenidate in a person without ADHD** - I couldn't find anything concrete on whether I can verify this - if, for example, I don't have ADHD, how should it affect me vs. someone with ADHD. It's so vaguely described on the internet that it's not clear if there's a concrete way to verify this to avoid questioning my own observations. Obviously, a solid diagnosis like a blood test or MRI for other diseases won't be available, but by nature, I'm a skeptic and need it grounded to sleep peacefully and not get into unnecessary discussions with people who barely understand the subject.
  2. **Effectiveness of diagnostics** - I haven't encountered any data on how often diagnoses are invalidated. I read on Reddit (unfortunately, there are few better discussion places with a lot of content) that one girl had an ADHD diagnosis, took Adderall, and after about 2 years, it turned out it wasn't ADHD but some compulsive disorder. Is there any information on how many people with an ADHD diagnosis and prescribed treatment are misdiagnosed? It's known that in the USA, people sometimes stretch the truth to get Adderall, but I'm sure you understand my point and the essence of the matter.
  3. **Dosage** - I have a bit of time left before my next appointment and wonder what I can do (but nothing stupid). My friend, for example, has 30mg CR in the morning and then has those on-demand Medikinet, which keeps him okay later in the day and doesn't cause sleep problems; he's considering switching to Concerta. From my psychiatrist, I basically got the information I already mentioned plus to avoid abusing alcohol. Is there anything I can change in these recommendations to not waste time? If I just take 30mg or 40mg in the morning (of course, gradually and checking the response weekly), am I exposing myself to any problems? I found out on my own that I won't die, but I'm interested in the effectiveness of this treatment, not messing around.
  4. **A question completely omitted by the psychiatrist, and I didn't get any specific information, which is quite important to me**. In all the DIVA tests, I scored higher in adulthood than in childhood. In the last one, it came out as follows: Summary of symptoms according to DSM-5: I. Attention Deficit: Adulthood: 8/9, Childhood: 7/9 II. Hyperactivity and impulsivity: Adulthood: 9/9, Childhood: 8/9 III. Experienced symptoms are a source of significant problems, manifesting in at least 2 areas of life in both childhood and adulthood. After my own analysis, talking to my mom and sister, it's hard to deny that I had serious problems in areas affected by ADHD plus many “less obvious” symptoms that I learned about from PsychiatraPlus from Mr. Jóźwiak (thanks God he records because books and articles in Poland on the internet are often a disaster) in quite significant intensity. I'm still afraid of cognitive bias and fitting the situation to the thesis.
I noticed an increase in many symptoms attributed to ADHD after 2022 (when my father committed suicide, which involved PTSD therapy because I saw a lot, plus a depressive episode). Before, I might have had 2-3 such severe depressive episodes. I skimmed through (I emphasize because I might have missed something that would answer my question, and I don't want to appear lazy coming for a free ready-made solution) meta-analyses (The World Federation of ADHD International Consensus Statement: 208 Evidence-based Conclusions about the Disorder). This fragment intrigued me: "ADHD is rarely caused by a single genetic or environmental risk factor, but most cases of ADHD are caused by the combined effects of many genetic and environmental risks, each having a very small effect."
This, of course, suggested a possible scenario - a father with ADHD + trauma could have exacerbated my symptoms, hence now they are more noticeable to me than before, although it resonates more with me that conditions, tasks, and challenges I face have changed. I didn't observe myself in this regard before; I didn't have the knowledge; I attributed my failures to a different “legend” (I wasn't taught consequences, laziness, lack of discipline, if I tried harder, etc.) than ADHD. Obviously, I'm not so infantile as to expect someone to try to resolve this issue, but based on the current conclusive knowledge, how do you assess my line of thinking, does it hold together? Could I check anything else additionally?
To conclude, I know I need to find a good psychiatrist; I have one in mind, but it's pointless at this moment when I have prescriptions and "recommendations" to schedule and pay for a visit since I'll probably get not very in-depth answers (I also understand doctors don't have 2 hours to give a lecture on how and why things work), rather reassuring and "we'll observe." Whenever something stresses or confuses me, I just try to understand it, and when it turns out that my inherent skepticism activated unnecessarily, the problem disappears from the radar.
I hope someone will guide me to the right materials that will tell me a bit more about these issues. Once again, thank you in advance for any response and time spent just reading this post. If additional questions arise to provide a better answer, I am happy to respond.

2024.05.16 17:51 Sikatanan The Book of Brunson: What I found rewatching all 244 of his two-point attempts [OC]

You are Jalen Brunson. (Cool feeling, right?) You catch the ball on the right wing and weave together some between-the-legs dribbles while you contemplate how you should score. Pound dribble to a step-back? The double-crossover-to-hesi combo to get to the paint for a classic floater?
Not this time. You call up good ole’ Isaiah Hartenstein — love that guy — for a pick, but it’s a ruse. As he approaches, you flash the quickest in-and-out in the land and reject the screen, blowing by your hapless defender like the Road Runner lapping the Coyote. Layup drills aren’t this easy.
As Knicks fall around him like so many orange, autumnal leaves, Brunson just keeps carving a path to points. He’s had five 40-burgers in 11 playoff games. There aren’t many guards in the league with as diverse a shotmaking profile. I wanted to dig deeper and figure out how he got all these buckets, particularly the ones inside the arc, where the artistry happens.
A shot chart can show you where the shots happened (sort of), but they can’t show you what kind of attempt it was. The NBA assigns a type to every shot, but the descriptions are both inconsistent and wrong too often to be useful for a micro-analysis like this. So, I hit the tape. I rewatched all of Brunson’s 244 two-point attempts from these playoffs and categorized them into several shot types (there is some discretion involved, art and science, but I tried my best to be consistent).
Here’s how he scores inside the arc, from least prolific to most. The Book of Brunson, if you will (or if you will not; that’s what I’m calling it, regardless). It starts a little slow, but I promise it gets exciting toward the end. Kind of like every single Knicks playoff game.
[Thanks for reading! I've collected nearly a dozen video clips illustrating my points. I think they add a lot to the post! They can be found in-context here or at the various links I've put throughout.]

7) THE DUNK

1 make, 0 misses, 0 FTM, 2.00 Points Per Shot (PPS)

Brunson is listed at 73 inches tall. If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge not too far from Madison Square Garden I can sell you. He only had three dunks in 77 regular season games, but he had one threadbare yet magnificent jam in these playoffs. Here it is: [video here]
When I played 2K (back when a single digit followed the “2K” prefix, yikes), that was called the “rim-grazer” package. Barely gets over the cylinder. Still counts!

6) Cuts

2 makes, 1 miss, 1 FTM, 1.67 PPS

Here’s the thing about Brunson. Brunson makes Brunson happen. He doesn’t need passes from teammates; he needs them to set picks, space the floor, and stay out of the way. In the regular season, 23% of his two-pointers were assisted, a low number. In the playoffs, that’s fallen to 15%. And calling some of these “assists” feels generous. You tell me how much the pass here had to do with Brunson scoring: [video here]
I digress. Back to cuts. Synergy has him in the fourth percentile for the share of shots finished off of cuts; it’s not his jam. By my count, Brunson has had precisely three field goal attempts off cuts in 11 playoff games. Two went in. For what it’s worth, Hartenstein had the assist on both (and in fact, Hartenstein’s 10 total playoff assists to Brunson are more than anyone else on the roster). Here’s one: [video here]
Understandably, the Pacers were not expecting it. Neither was I, but then again, I’m not paid eight figures to stop him.

5) Transition

6 makes, 3 misses, 3 FTM, 1.67 PPS

The Knicks, famously, are the slowest team in the league, and they’ve crawled in the playoffs. Might be too tired from the heavy minutes; have to save your energy for offensive rebounds, I get it. Josh Hart carries most of the transition load.
But every once in a while, someone will poke the ball loose and toss it up to Brunson. He’ll catch it, dribble, lay it up. Most of the time, he makes it; sometimes, he misses it. If it doesn’t sound that exciting, well, it’s not.
If you want to see one, here it is. I appreciate how he uses his weirdly broad shoulders to create space around the rim: [video here]
Brunson can’t really throw it down in a highlight kind of way (except that one time when he did!). Fast-break Brunson layups are about as dull as fast-break layups can be. Let’s move on.

4) Spinning (usually) fadeaways over his (always) left shoulder

13 makes, 8 misses, 2 FTM, 1.33 PPS

Okay, now we’re getting to the good stuff. I will lump most of Brunson’s middies together, as you’ll see shortly, but I am partial to the aesthetics of the spinning fadeaway.
I mean, look at this thing. It’s gorgeous. The footwork, the arc, everything. And always — always! — using that left shoulder as a pole to spin around: [video here]
These are difficult shots, but by my count, he’s shooting 62% on turnarounds! That’s wild. I wonder if he shouldn’t take more of these and fewer step-backs, although these are a bit harder to get off with bigger bodies on him. Brunson knows what he’s doing; I shan’t second-guess him.

3) Layups and blow-bys

29 makes, 23 misses, 19 FTM, 1.48 PPS

Layups are a massive part of Brunson’s shot diet, even if it’s harder for him to get to the rim than some of his less-normal-sized peers in the league. Shot a little better doing these against Philly with a jump-less Embiid than against Indiana, where he has gone just 14-for-29 by my count (although he’s drawn a handful of fouls, so that’s a bit misleading).
But it’s always fun seeing him break defenders in half on the way to the hoop like it’s the most casual thing in the world: [video here]
It isn’t casual, though. It’s a lot of work. I’m stressed about the impact of all this acceleration and deceleration on his joints, ligaments, and bones, and despite what the tenor of this piece may lead you to believe, I’m not even a Knicks fan.
I’m also stressed you’ll judge me by my chosen highlights, spent more time than I care to admit picking ones that will prove to you that I’m both knowledgeable and a little hipster. Brunson made Nesmith touch parquet twice in the ongoing series (which hurt me; I’m a huge Nesmith guy), but that’s a little too cool to be cool, you know what I mean? Here’s where I landed. Brunson’s not as big a pass-fake guy as you might expect, but he sure does love to pretend that a pick is coming: [video here]
Ah, now I’m second-guessing myself. Oh well. You know what Brunson layups look like. It’s all crazy dribble combinations and shot fakes in fits and spurts, starts and stops, that somehow end with him blurring to the hoop for a high-arcing shot off the glass.

2) Floaters

30 makes, 32 misses, 18 FTM, 1.26 PPS

The infamous Brunson floater. A cruel tool, one the Geneva Convention was specifically designed to combat. It’s unstoppable (except when it’s stopped).
Floaters are a weapon of last resort for too many point guards, the shot they puke up when they can’t get past their man. That can be true for Brunson at times, too.
But Brunson has weaponized the floater, often by using it to bait fouls. If he gets the hostage dribble on a defender, putting them on his back, you better believe he’s gonna throw the ball upward and his body backward to get the whistle (I thought they legislated that out of the game, but nobody told the refs judging Brunson). That’s not my favorite play, of course, but it’s hard to deny the effectiveness.
He launches floaters from everywhere and anywhere. Leaning left, leaning right, falling down. Contested, wide-open, in the middle of four bodies. Occasionally, Brunson reminds me of classic fight-movie scenes in which the protagonist is drowning in enemy combatants, buried so you can’t even see him, when he suddenly springs up, spraying bad guys everywhere: [video here]
People say Brunson is good at getting to his spots, as if there is a finite number. I don’t really agree. All spots are Brunson spots; the floater will come from whatever direction he chooses.

1) Step-backs, side-steps, pull-ups, and other hyphenates

31 makes, 45 misses, 12 FTM, 0.97 PPS

Even excluding the turnaround fadeaways and floaters, Brunson has shot more midrange jumpers than any other type of shot. Yeah, that’s sort of cheating; I’m lumping many different kinds of buckets into one bucket. Maybe it’s too broad to be useful. But frankly, some of these are hard to differentiate (and also, this post would be too long; if you’re still here, I appreciate you. Know that this started off being much longer in a way that benefitted no one.). You’d think it would be easy to tell a pull-up from a side-step, but I swear Brunson can combine these in ways that somehow don’t defy the laws of basketball (i.e., traveling). It’s hard, so eventually, I decided to lump them all together.
Midrange jumpers are generally looked down upon. You can see from my points-per-shot calculation how much less efficient they’ve been than everything else, but that’s the nature of the beast. Just because they don’t always go in doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate them.
Sometimes, it’s hard to manufacture even sub-optimal offense (and that’s particularly true in the playoffs). Sometimes, you gotta go out there and cook; as long as the meal’s not burnt, it’ll do. And sometimes, it’ll be g*dd*mn delicious: [video here]
In truth, many of these possessions are ticking grenades, and it’s up to our hero to jump on them. The Knicks try to run their offense, nobody else can do a dang thing off the dribble (not, mind you, that they receive many chances), and suddenly there are six seconds left on the shot clock. Brunson, thankfully, can do a whole lot in six seconds. This is great defense; it doesn’t matter: [video here]
The midrange isn’t dead; like wealth, it has simply consolidated into the hands of the few. Only players with sufficient star wattage are allowed to take them. And with a playoff run for the ages, Brunson’s been outshining nearly everyone.

2024.05.16 17:44 adstrict4527 Animals should be able to eat, breed and starve on their own. (Minecraft Ecosystems!)

We already have animals that eat plants, hunt other animals, and some mobs can even breed on their own (villagers)
I know "ecosystems" in Minecraft sound complicated, but I think there’s a vanilla friendly way to do it with just 2 simple rules:

The 2 Basic Rules of the Ecosystem:

  1. All animal mobs require constant food or they will eventually starve and die (without giving any drops.)
  2. Animals who get more than enough food will breed on their own.
Both of these rules happen SLOWLY overtime. Manual breeding is still the fastest way to get animals, they'll now just need a source of renewable food like grass blocks to avoid starvation.
But with just those 2 rules you can simulate entire ecosystems everywhere in Minecraft!
Unfortunately in Minecraft right now this would be pretty unbalanced and most animals would eventually reproduce way too much or become extinct. How can we fix this to make default worlds a little more self-sustaining?

Basic ideas to help balance things:

  • Any area that spawns with a large amount of herbivores (Cows, Sheep, Chicken, Pigs, Rabbits, etc.) also needs to spawn near by predators (Foxes, Wolves, Polar Bears, etc.) to keep their population in check. (and vice versa!)
  • Since grass is SO abundant, it should provide less food points. Enough to keep an animal alive, but it would take awhile for them to eat enough to be able to reproduce. Rarer plants like tall grass and flowers provide more food points and encourage breeding.
  • When an animal dies of starvation on grass, it will act like bonemeal and create more of these rarer extra nourishing plants. If herbivore populations start dying out they'll naturally be given more food to help balance them!
  • The AI of predators and prey will need to be improved to make them better at hunting and avoiding being eaten.
  • And in order to truly have a balanced system there would probably just need to be more variety of predators, prey and plant food sources to fit each of Minecraft’s environments.
It would need lots of tweaks, but ideally this would make the default Minecraft world full of balanced, self sustaining ecosystems, that only the player could mess up.

The players effect on these ecosystems:

  • If a players removes too many of one type of an animal in an area, not only are you likely to cause it to go extinct there, but you’re also hurting all the nearby animals that depend on it.
  • If you remove all the predators in an area, the herbivore’s population will increase and they will overeat their plant food source. All the grass, flowers and mushrooms will eventually be eaten faster than they can grow back leaving the area barren, and eventually the herbivores will starve.
  • If you remove the plants in an area for your own buildings, it can harm the entire ecosystem!
  • If you introduce non native plants or animals into new environments, they may immediately die off or worse: outcompete the existing ecosystem and cause catastrophic effects!
If all of this sounds too drastic, keep it mind that it happens slowly over a long period of time, you have time to help your ecosystem recover! It can also be disabled as a gamerule if it just doesn't interest you at all.
Okay that's the idea, thanks for reading!
/
You're still here?
Okay if you wanted to take this a step further and create truly realistic adaptable ecosystems... I’d suggest one final rule...

Rule 3: Evolution!

  1. All animals’ have unique stats. They’re a combination of their parents + a small random factor. The better stats they have, the more food points they require to survive and breed.
This may sound too complicated, but we already have this mechanic with horses, so I think it would fit nicely in this system.
This is essentially basic evolution. Natural selection would make it so only the animals with stats that best benefit their specific environment will survive.
Areas with high food but high predators will develop stats that help them escape easier. Areas with low food will develop worse stats that require less food. Areas with low food but high predators will need to develop behaviors to avoid predators that don't cost more food (like hiding instead of running)
Here are all the stats that animals can change through reproduction:
  • Movement speed (High food point cost)
  • Health (High food point cost)
  • Amount of offspring they have (High food point cost)
  • How good is their range of vision for seeing predators, food, and finding mates? (Medium food point cost)
  • Do they run from predators or hide from them? (Running would use up food points)
  • How much do they randomly wander around? (Wandering would use up food points)
  • Do they want to stay close to other animals or avoid them? (No cost difference, but this effects competition for resources and chances of escaping a predator.)
This is just a very rudimentary proof of concept idea. I can think of many other ways to build off of it, but to keep things simple I'll leave it at this for now.
What do you think? Does this ruin Minecraft? Is it all too complicated? I think it would be tricky to get right, but it makes the animals in the game much more interesting and teaches the player the consequences for messing with the environment, which I think Mojang wants.

2024.05.16 17:35 meloflo 5 year Tret-versary, 33 y/o, skincare/beauty minimalist perspective + what I’ve learned along the way

5 year Tret-versary, 33 y/o, skincare/beauty minimalist perspective + what I’ve learned along the way
Left photos: 27 y/o with make up, pre-Tret Right photos: 33 y/o no make up, taken this week, wearing just sunscreen! (clear lip gloss and post workout sweat glow in first pic too). This is what I look like most days as a yoga + group fitness instructor and generally active outdoorsy person.
I’m almost 34y/o, ZERO botox, laser treatments, injections, facials, (I honestly hate going to appointments of any kind lol), or any skincare other than Tretinoin, occasional salicylic acid washes, sunscreen, and moisturizer. I consider myself a skincare/beauty minimalist and want to avoid injections/treatments for as long as I feel content to. I’d like to see how I age naturally while taking the most minimal, accessible, affordable, at-home preventative approach to skincare.
I started Tret at 28 y/o to improve texture/dullness/many stubborn closed comedones and for an anti-aging preventative approach, and I really just wanted to get to a place where I felt confident not wearing make up anymore. Make up was never a “fun expressive art form” for me, rather it was always a chore I felt I had to do in order to improve the appearance of my skin. I am now make up free for 4 years (aside from daily lip gloss, and very occasional boy brow/brow gel and mascara)—I have literally not touched foundation or blush once since early 2020 and I feel so liberated by it.
I still have faint dynamic forehead wrinkles and 11s, more visible in some pics/lighting than others and also depending on the hydration status of my skin, but Tret improved these immensely. I do tend to furrow my brow more often than I raise them. I also still get small breakouts, mostly on the lower half of my face/around my mouth, but they always clear up rather quickly and I don’t let them bother me anymore.
Lessons I’ve learned:
  • Skin needs nourishment, protection and overall tender care in order to thrive. We can’t constantly bombard skin with a bunch of harsh stripping actives and treatments and expect it to be soft and supple. Being able to read your skins signs and responding with careful intention and patience is key. I had to learn this the hard way as an oily, acne prone person my whole life who grew up on St. Ives and Stridex pads.
  • Less is more. I have tried alllll the fancy trendy pricey Sephora brands. I now consider myself a skincare/beauty minimalist because in my experience anything >4-5 steps is not sustainable or necessary and can sometimes do more harm than good. I also want to be able to get my products while I’m grocery shopping or at a drug store and not break the bank in the process. I get that my approach may not be for everyone but it is for me and some!
  • I stopped hyper focusing on the (fluctuating) state of my skin. A pimple here or redness there used to really preoccupy my thoughts. Now I just go on with my day barely noticing those things, accepting that skin changes daily based on many factors and it will clear up again. (This one I understand is a privilege of having figured out my skin’s issues and being on the other side of it, but it’s important to not let the state of your skin become an obsession or rob you of your joy no matter where you are in the process. There are much more important things about us than the appearance of our skin 🫶.)
  • To piggyback off of the previous one I stopped looking at my skin close up or for too long in the mirror. Realistic expectations are so important. Skin is naturally textured and creased because it's a moving, breathing, constantly changing living thing. Blemishes and coloration come and go for many different reasons. So much of what we see on social and in advertisements is just not real life.
  • Letting go of the rigidity of “routine” and learning to observe and listen to what my skin needs from day to day, and acting accordingly. Sometimes that means skipping an active on a night that I had originally planned on it (Tret and salicylic acid are the only ones I use) if my skin looks a little sensitive for some reason that day. I guess I’d been doing skin cycling before I even realized it was a thing. I live in the mountains (dry climate) and spend a lot of time outside in the elements on the weekends hiking or skiing (always with sunscreen + reapplications, a hat, and sunglasses, and a full face UPF gaiter if the weather calls for it). I also generally keep my face out of direct sunlight and treat my neck and décolletage the same, no Tret there though, just sun protection.
If you’ve just started Tret recently and you’re going through it—I feel you, and I remember what it was like. I had about a 4-5 month purge as all my closed comedones transformed into full blown blemishes and it was really hard mentally and emotionally to navigate. But be kind to your skin and more importantly, to yourself! 🫶
I use Tret 3x/week. Some nights SA wash, other nights nothing except gentle cleanse and moisture, all depending on what my skin needs that day.
Routine:
AM: moisturizer (AR), sunscreen
PM: oil cleanse, cleanse (either LRP or SA), moisturizer on wet skin (vani then AR), wait 30-60 min, tret

2024.05.16 17:24 TheLotStore What to Look for When Buying Mobile Home Land for Sale

What to Look for When Buying Mobile Home Land for Sale
What to Look for When Buying Mobile Home Land for Sale
Factors to Consider When Purchasing Mobile Home Land for SaleMobile residences have gained popularity as an economical housing option. With the escalating demand for mobile homes, the necessity for suitable land has also risen. When acquiring land for a mobile home, it's crucial to ponder over several significant elements to ensure a prudent investment. This article will delve into the considerations to keep in mind when buying land for a mobile home.Prime LocationIn the real estate realm, location holds paramount importance, and the same principle applies to mobile home land. The location significantly impacts the value and potential resale worth of the property. When scouting for mobile home land for sale, contemplate its proximity to amenities like shopping centers, schools, healthcare facilities, and entertainment venues. Moreover, assess the accessibility of the land. Is it conveniently positioned near major highways and public transportation? Is it reasonably close to your workplace or business premises? These are all pivotal factors to contemplate when selecting the locale for your mobile home.Zoning and Land Use RegulationsPrior to procuring mobile home land, it's imperative to grasp the zoning and land use regulations governing the property. Different regions have distinct zoning laws and regulations dictating the usage and development of land. Certain areas may impose specific regulations regarding mobile homes, including limitations on the dimensions, age, and aesthetic criteria. Thoroughly researching and comprehending the local zoning laws is crucial to ensure that the land under consideration is zoned for a mobile home. Additionally, factor in any potential constraints on land usage, such as restrictions on erecting additional structures or utilizing the land for commercial purposes.Utilities and InfrastructureWhen purchasing mobile home land, consider the accessibility of utilities and infrastructure. This encompasses availability of water, sewerage, electricity, and natural gas. In rural areas, you may need to install a septic system and a well for water, so it's essential to account for these expenses when contemplating the land purchase. Furthermore, evaluate the state of the existing infrastructure, including roads, driveways, and walkways. Ascertain that the land has sufficient access to utilities and infrastructure to support a mobile home.Topography and Site ConditionsThe topography and site conditions of the land are crucial aspects to weigh when procuring mobile home land. Take into account the terrain slope, elevation, and soil conditions. A level, flat plot is ideal for siting a mobile home and reduces the expenses for site groundwork and foundation construction. Furthermore, contemplate the drainage and water runoff on the property. Poor drainage could result in flooding and erosion, warranting the assurance of adequate drainage systems on the land.Environmental ConsiderationsPrior to purchasing mobile home land, it's imperative to contemplate any potential environmental apprehensions. This encompasses conducting a comprehensive environmental evaluation of the property to identify potential hazards or contamination. Additionally, consider the natural surroundings of the land, including wildlife presence, vegetation, and natural features like wetlands. These environmental considerations can impact the land's development and utilization, underscoring the necessity for a thorough assessment prior to purchase.Restrictive Covenants and Homeowners AssociationsPrior to purchasing mobile home land, factor in any restrictive covenants or homeowners associations governing the property. Certain areas may enforce restrictive covenants regulating the land's usage and development, including restrictions on the type and size of mobile homes permissible on the property. Additionally, some regions may have homeowners associations necessitating membership and payment of fees for maintaining and upkeeping communal areas. It's crucial to understand and comply with any restrictive covenants or homeowners association regulations that may impact the land's utilization and development.Legal ConsiderationsWhen acquiring mobile home land, it's vital to account for any legal considerations influencing the property. This involves conducting a title search to verify the seller's clear and marketable title to the land. Additionally, contemplate any existing liens, encumbrances, or easements that may impact the land's utilization and development. Collaborating with a competent real estate attorney to scrutinize the legal documents is crucial to ensure that the property is devoid of any legal issues.Accessibility and AmenitiesAccessibility and amenities are pivotal factors when procuring mobile home land. Evaluate the land's accessibility, including the size and condition of the roads leading to the property. Furthermore, assess the availability of amenities such as shopping centers, schools, healthcare facilities, and entertainment venues. Ensuring that the land is conveniently situated and endowed with essential amenities is crucial to support a comfortable and convenient lifestyle.Cost and Financing OptionsLastly, take into account the land's cost and the available financing alternatives. When purchasing mobile home land, it's crucial to consider the overall land cost, encompassing the purchase price, taxes, and any additional fees or expenses.
