Unable to remove Appx Package

2024.05.16 15:14 miharixIT Unable to remove Appx Package

Hope someone has seen something similar... I'm trying to remove MS bloatware from computers in may company (same image & AD). Unfortunately the removal breaks. If I run in powershell
Get-AppxPackage -allusers -Name *bing* Remove-AppPackage
I get
Remove-AppPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073D19, An error occurred because a user was logged off.
Windows cannot remove Microsoft.BingWeather_4.31.11905.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe because the current user does not have that package installed.
After running
Get-AppxPackage -allusers -Name *bing* select PackageUserInformation
I found that for all packages not only *bing* there is a user UID that I cant identify.
{S-1-5-21-3103067861-1176872466-3194093299-1002 [S-1-5-21-3103067861-1176872466-3194093299-1002]: Installed}
The Get-LocalUser -SID for that user returns "User was not found" If I search in regedit that ID I get keys/velues/data in
https://pastebin.com/mu0T3BNs
but none gives information who the user actually is and Remove-LocalUser -SID also returns "User not found"
The key "DeviceId under
Computer\HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\DeviceIdentities\production\
seem to have a value that could be some encryption of username but none that I tried works.
Deleting all keys/velues/data feels like this could go terrible wrong or beak something in the future.
Any idea how to remove such stubborn packages ?

2024.05.16 15:09 freshoffdablock [Hiring] - Tech Startup (Software) Looking For A Cofounder - Skilled Programmer That's A Warrior [50% Equity]

So, I've been deeply immersed in the tech world for quite some time now. Armed with a solid Comp-Sci Degree, I ventured into the corporate realm, but truth be told, it didn't quite scratch that entrepreneurial itch. It wasn't until I found my stride as an APM (Associate Product Manager) that I truly felt at home.
And here's a little more about me – I'm not just another face in the tech crowd. I'm also a business owner with a company that's already up and running. I've experienced firsthand the highs and lows of launching something from scratch. But you know what's crucial in this journey? Freedom. The freedom to innovate, to create, to chart our own course. And that's why finding the right co-founder is paramount.
Now, onto the exciting part – this idea I've been brewing. It's raw, it's unrefined, but it's brimming with potential. Sure, it might take a few detours, a couple of pivots here and there, but isn't that the essence of innovation? Every great venture starts with a seed of an idea, after all.
And that's where you come in. I'm on the lookout for a partner, a fellow visionary ready to embark on this journey with me. We're talking about splitting the company equity right down the middle because, let's face it, two heads are better than one.
What qualities do I seek in a partner? Well, for starters, I need a warrior. Someone who doesn't just see obstacles, but relishes the challenge of overcoming them. Optimism is key – setbacks are inevitable, but with the right mindset, they become opportunities for growth. And hungry? Absolutely. Hungry for success, hungry for innovation, hungry to leave a mark on the world.
But there's more. Communication is key in any partnership. That's why I'm looking for someone pretty clever and great at programming, but also adept at articulating ideas effectively. Open-mindedness is crucial – we'll be exploring uncharted territory, after all. And let's cut the BS, shall we? I need someone straightforward, someone who tells it like it is.
Here's the kicker – while I may not be the best programmer out there, I do have a knack for understanding the best direction of everything. I can guide the ship, so to speak, ensuring that every move we make aligns with our ultimate vision.
And here's the deal – I'm willing to give 50-50 of the idea I have currently because I want to be locked in with this person. I want to find a co-founder that best fits this vision and I'm ready to go all-in.
So, if you're ready to roll up your sleeves and dive headfirst into the exhilarating world of entrepreneurship, shoot me a message. Let's not just disrupt the status quo but revolutionize it entirely.
And hey, a little about me beyond the boardroom? I've got a soft spot for comedy – there's nothing quite like a good laugh to brighten the day. And when I'm not immersed in the startup grind, you'll likely find me out on the golf course, honing my swing and enjoying the great outdoors.
Can't wait to connect with you, my future co-conspirator!

Toshiba Canvio Basics crashes Finder
Hi folks,
I have a Toshiba Canvio Basics 3TB (model HDTB330EK3CB) that’s giving signs of dying and I’d like to salvage its contents (there’s lots of photographs that I’m not sure I have backed up on another drive).
This is a terrible drive. It didn’t work too well from the beginning and I should have returned it when I could, but that ship sailed years ago.
For context, I run it on Mac Sonoma 14 (I tried on Windows too with no success) and the files should be Ex-FAT, although its info states that they’re on APFS format (even though I’ve never switched to it):
https://preview.redd.it/cfflw6y1es0d1.png?width=524&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e9ee77b46882c11062e41e820cf5314c00a40f0

Around two months ago, it started not showing up on my desktop. You could hear the drive spinning and some light whirring sound inside but I could not access it. After cleaning the metal part of the cable, it ended up working correctly and I could work with it. This is when I should have backed it all up, I know.
A couple of weeks ago, the problem came back although I haven’t been able to access the drives’ files this time. I tried using a powered hub but it didn’t work. I tried using a new cable and the drive finally showed up on my desktop but Finder couldn’t read its files, it stated it was “Loading” for a couple of hours but I couldn’t see the files. I tried running Disk Manager but it crashed (both in regular and safety mode).
I’m not sure about the next step I should take and I don't want to connect it much to avoid potential damage to the files. The APFS thing is bugging me and I guess that could be the key. My current goal is accessing files, backing them all up and not trusting this drive ever again.
What should I do next? I’m lost about the next steps I should take without damaging the drive (and more importantly, its files).
Thank you all for your help!

2024.05.16 15:00 Tomcat997 Keeping guns in a flat

Bit of background. I have had my firearms and shotgun license for years now, since I was a teenager. I'm a farmer and have my own land to shoot on. Now at grand old age of 30 me and the mrs are finally able to buy flat together and move out of home (yay). I'm worried about how the firearms officers view keeping guns in flats and if anyone has had experience with this I'd be grateful for your input. My main concerns are the common areas you'd have to carry the guns through (in cases obviously) and that there are no solid brick walls to fix the safe to.
Alternatively is it possible for the guns to stay where they are currently and I keep the keys with me. Essentially can I keep them at an address I do not live? No person still living there will be able access the safe.
Thanks for any advice

2024.05.16 15:00 baltimore-aureole "The Polling Data has been wrong all along” . . . the economy is great.

https://preview.redd.it/723yixv3ds0d1.png?width=321&format=png&auto=webp&s=54eae030e9f4e012d0cdf9da178aca9afb38f77c
Photo above - Math is hard! White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre does her best to tackle tough economic questions from reporters.
Biden says the economy is great, and the polls have been “wrong all along”. To be honest, I'm skeptical about polls too. I don't believe 40% of people have seen bigfoot, angels, flying saucers, or the loch ness monster. I never believed Hillary was going to win in landslide in 2016. I don't believe Bitcoin is going to hit $1MM and will ensure that I have a comfortable retirement.
Polls about the economy aren't actually based on data. They're based on personal opinions of the people being polled. And when the White House says "the polls are wrong”, they're telling us that we're mistaken about everything. Spiraling housing prices. Mall vacancies. Gasoline. Homeless encampments. Epic narcotics overdoses. If you see ANY of these things near where YOU live, you're hallucinating. If they're not visible from the windows of the oval office, they're not real. (see link below).
Biden, of course, is certainly not the first president to be insulated from reality. Jimmy Carter famously told Americans put on a sweater, turn down the thermostat, and use daylight savings time year-round to tame energy prices. LBJ sent 100,000 troops to Vietnam, and Nixon doubled down on that. FDR arrested every Japanese citizen in America, and sent them all to desert concentration camps.
The White House press secretary (Karine Jean-Pierre) recently had to walk back claims in a Biden campaign speech that he inherited an economy with 9% inflation. Actually, the inflation rate was 1.4% on inauguration day. It didn't reach 9% until 18 months later. This is the sort of gaffe which campaign advisors are desperate to avoid in the upcoming June 27th debate. On the other hand, Trump's campaign staff is probably hoping he doesn't have to participate via Zoom, from behind bars.
If anyone is interested in legitimate data, instead of polls, the CPI inflation gauge (which does NOT include proportionate representation of homes, gasoline, and food) shows that since inauguration day prices are 20% higher. Yeah, actual economists totaled up all the numbers from each month since January 6, 2021. But without home prices, which are up nearly 50%.
I'm shocked – shocked I tell you! - that both the Biden and Trump campaign teams agreed to a debate before the conventions even take place. These are old men, easily confused, and detached from reality. Trump gazes out on the world from Mar A Largo, Biden from the Oval Office. This is going to be must see TV. Apparently, someone is expecting the other guy to commit a fatal gaffe. Or have a fatal heart attack. If this is going to happen, let's find out before the party conventions, okay?
I'm just sayin' . . .

2024.05.16 14:56 bassboat1 Aluminum screen frame with lip/ledge source?

I need to build a couple of screens for some vinyl double-hung windows that currently have half screens. The current screens have a raised edge on the exterior face of one of the verticals, and tension springs mounted on the edge of the other side. I've always built screens using the generic M-D pressed aluminum channel that the home stores sell, with the retention mechanism being spring-loaded plungers. The extruded material in the existing screens is more durable than the pressed sheet metal, and you don't have those pins corroding or breaking. Anyone know a source?

2024.05.16 14:26 Just_Click_Em Need advice in resolving an issue (No Personal Info)

I’ve been selling off a large portion of my funko pop collection as I’ve been looking to downsize. One of the funkos I have sold is a Chase edition of a character. I priced it at £35 as that’s what he seemed to be worth. Within two days of me listing it, someone bought it at full price, using inpost locker to home. Not uncommon for my orders.
Now the buyers profile was a little suspicious, 0 stars, no reviews, brand new account. I thought it was a little weird but I sent it anyway. If I had of known, I wouldn’t have fulfilled the order but it’s difficult as I don’t want to break my perfect track record on Vinted for not fulfilling the order and it sucks that I had essentially no control over who buys it. Vinted also doesn’t stop new accounts from buying items over a certain price to prevent scams. The buyer has since bought other items and has a couple 5 star reviews from other sellers. He also never had any items listed at the time of buying my item, but now has quite a few items listed to sell. He also follows another funko pop seller, so maybe he isn’t that suspicious after all?
Well I shipped the item on the 2nd of May. It then says on the inpost tracker that they attempted delivery on 7th and left a card. It then says on the 8th that they will attempt again and it is still marked as ‘out for delivery’. As far as I’m aware, with inpost locker to home, delivery will be attempted twice before returning to the sender. However a second delivery was never attempted, and I don’t know what’s on the card. The tracking hasn’t updated since then. I’m at a loss, I don’t have the money, the whereabouts of the parcel are unknown to me.
I haven’t spoken to the buyer, but he also hasn’t reached out to me asking if I know where his parcel is, which I don’t. I’ve sold over 50 items on vinted, around 75% of them have been sent through inpost and I’ve never had an issue like this before. Ever. Any advice or insight would be appreciated, I’ve tried to contact vinted over it and they’ve said there’s nothing they can do until after June 6th as that’s 25 business days after I sent it. Until then I have to accept that I don’t have the money I guess? I’ve since disabled inpost’s locker to home on my account, so at least any more buyers have to go get it to get their hands on it, and failure to do so results in me getting it back.
I’d just like to know where to go from here. Do I contact inpost and report the parcel as missing? Or do I wait until the end of the delivery window to take further action. Im seriously suspicious of what’s happened and something feels off to me.

2024.05.16 13:54 Live-Chard-2304 AITA for going into my tenant’s room?

Hello, I want to start by giving a little bit of background to what is currently going on. I rent out rooms in my home and each room ranges to $800-1000$ depending on size, whether it’s a private bathroom and all our rooms come furnished with tv, bedding and walk in closet. I have a tenant living upstairs while my wife and I live downstairs.
I have rules in my home and I’d like for them to be abided by. No talking on the phone past 11pm, and it’s not a rule, but I want windows closed at night as the air is very cold and I don’t want the pipes to freeze into the next room. Especially if she isn’t here, if she’s at work.
Lastnight, my tenant left her window open, she does it maybe twice a month but lastnight it started raining. So, I put the code into her door and I unlocked it, and I closed her window and locked it back. While there, I noticed her closet was empty. Her clothes were usually hanging out they were all packed up. Was she going to leave and not give me 30 days notice. I am quite sensitive, so I got upset. I’ve had this happen before and it’s not considerate. While in her room I also viewed how she lived. Her room was dirty and she had several urine bottles inside of her room which was disgusting. I didn’t want to touch it so I left it there. I guess she was aware of this, because when she got off of work this morning, she knocked on my door and came to confront me about this, but I didn’t want any drama and quite frankly, I am upset with her. So I didn’t open it.
I know there may be tension, but I will be avoiding her. AITA?

2024.05.16 13:44 PersonalityNovel5581 Question for parents who are leaving the family home with kids

Husband and I are divorcing. We have two toddlers under seven. I’m leaving the house in order to be closer to family.
My question is while I’m able to stay at my parents until I find a place to live,I’m not sure we would end up living in the same town as them as housing there is pretty pricey. How do I avoid moving in with them and enrolling kids in school in their town if we might end up living in a different city?
I’m trying to avoid enrolling them in two different schools in such a short time but it seems like I missed my window since school starts in August. I also don’t want to stay at my current home for another full year, but it seems like that’s my only option. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

2024.05.16 13:34 Candid-Reward9677 In Depth EV9 1500 mile Review

Hello everyone,
I thought I would share my thoughts on my Iceberg Green EV9 land, with tow package. Some notes on my settings and car usage: I have all software updates installed, use the car in normal drive mode, and most frequently am using i-pedal regen. I have everything enabled in the car except for digital key and the car charger cable lock. I use a NFC card for unlock, lock, and start. I have throttled at-home AC charging so that my charger maxes out at 30A (or about 7 kw):
What works well/I like:
  1. Efficiency. I am getting 3.0 kWh, at least, and that was in colder winter spring conditions here in the Boston area. The car does demand more energy on the highway (no surprise) but it really sips energy around town. The city driving can be amazingly efficient (3.3 or higher kWh). I do a combo of highway and city driveway.
  2. The heat pump air conditioning system. Heating and cooling is fast, very efficient, and clearly helps to extend range in the winter. I can see high spikes (up to 15kw when I turn on the system), but once the car is to temp, is stay level at 1-2 kw, or less. Very impressive.
  3. Quietness of ride. Compared to my wife's relatively new sienna, this ride is very quiet. Its really nice rot finally have a car that is quiet enough for easy hands free telephone conversation and lower music volume.
  4. The acceleration of the car. Holy mackerel. I have never had an EV before so driving a car this large and heavy that can go 0-60 in 5 seconds is a revelation. And yes, I do floor it very occasionaly and am still getting great efficiency. If you drive it hard all the time, and you will burn thru the energy in battery a lot faster.
  5. Lane centering, self steering, and cruise control (the prob have acronyms but I dont know what they are). Can this car completely self drive? Defeintily not. But it's really nice to take the hands off the wheel for short periods of time. The radar cruise control works really well and will brake well under most circumstances.
  6. The room for 2nd and 3rd row passengers. There is tons of room in the second row, and the 3rd is excellent comparatively to other offerings. If you haul kids, they will be very happy.
  7. The regen settings and the E-GMP platform as a whole. The regen options are amazing. One reason why I get the efficiency I do is I largely am in i-pedal, auto, and low regeneration settings, depending on where I am driving. They clearly put a a lot of thought into how all components of the system should operate together. So far AC charging at home and DC fast charging using EA stations has worked very well. I am very impressed by this platform, although admittedly I dont have a basis for comparison.
  8. The option to use the car is a whole home backup during power outages using the upcoming bi directional chargers. Said chargers haven't been released yet, but using 100kw battery in the car to power certain circuits in a home is a much more elegant idea than dropping 15-25k on a stand alone 10-20kw system. And I bet here in MA I will eventually get paid for allowing the utility to take power from the battery during times of high demand. Love that idea.
  9. The infotainment system. I am coming form a ICE car. The infotainment has so many screens and useful settings. Navigation could be improved, but I am still enjoying the system. The EV menu especially is great, and really helps me to understand really time energy consumption and regeneration. My guess is Tesla does all of this much better, but still, I really like most if it, except for the maps "app" which sucks. I use CarPlay, google maps, and apple maps instead.
  10. the stereo system. Yes it's a little lacking in the base department, but between the lower road noise and decent speakers, I enjoy it, especially the surround mode feature.
  11. The small things. Wireless apple CarPlay, auto high beams, auto windshield wipers, heated/ventilated seats, LED (or LCD?) rearview mirror, passenger talk, and second row sun shades which cover almost the entire window - all work much better than expected. I use all and really appreciate the functionality and ease of use of all of these features.
  12. OTA updates and kia connect in general. Again its sounds like Tesla does all of this better, but I have had 5 updates on the car since purchase. Kia is clearly trying to improve the functionality and reliability of the car via these OTA updates. I also appreciate the features in kia connect, even though they are not mind blowing. I have never had a car that I could pre-air condition before. Its a nice change.
What I Dont like:
  1. As some others on this sub have mentioned the car exhibits is some lateral movement especially at higher speeds when the car goes over bumps. To me, the movement is minor and it doesnt bother me. But when it happens, I am reminded that I am not really driving a sports car. It's a fast SUV.
  2. Not being able to keep the car in I-pedal. Others have mentioned this too. This might be regulator specified though.
  3. Some of the safety features. There are some many it's mind blowing. But I keep my Yakima Exo hitch system on at all times (collapsed) which means I have to disable one feature every time I drive (I must hold down the center console "P" button for three seconds or else the car performs emergency breaking as it thinks its going to hit the EXO).
  4. Not beings able to have all door handles unlock any/everytime a request is sent to the car to unlock a door. I know this is a safety feature, but its annoying that I cant turn it off.
  5. Feeling like enabling my phone as a digital key might significantly reduce battery life. I would like to use this feature, but am more interested in have a reliable car that can fall asleep and give its 12V a break.
Needless to say, I love the car. So long as it continues to be dependable, I will continue to love it.
Hope this is helpful if you are on the fence. I have learned a lot from the sub reddit, and wanted to give back.

Whether you're a frequent globetrotter or a first-time visitor, these tips will come in handy when dealing with money exchange in the vibrant city of Delhi.

Currency Exchange Hacks for Travelers

When it comes to exchanging your currency, knowledge is power. By being aware of a few currency exchange hacks, you can save money and get the best rates possible. Here are some insider secrets that will make your money go further:
https://preview.redd.it/oif8iidkxr0d1.jpg?width=1098&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b02b441979b9e8beaa16850d6961ac0b922443fc

1. Research Before You Travel

Before embarking on your journey, it's always a good idea to research the current exchange rates in Delhi. Visit reliable financial websites or consider using currency exchange apps to stay updated. This knowledge will give you a benchmark and help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

2. Compare Exchange Rates

Not all money changers offer the same rates. Take the time to compare exchange rates from different providers in Delhi. Look for authorized money changers who offer competitive rates and low commission fees. This extra step can save you a significant amount of money.

3. Avoid Airport Currency Exchanges

While it may be convenient to exchange your money at the airport, you'll usually find better rates elsewhere. Airport currency exchange services often charge higher commission fees due to their prime locations and limited competition. Consider exchanging a small amount for immediate expenses and find a reputable money changer in the city for the bulk of your currency exchange.

4. Be Aware of Hidden Fees

Some currency exchange providers may charge additional fees that aren't immediately apparent. Read the fine print and ask about any hidden fees or commission charges before making your exchange. It's essential to calculate the overall cost so you can accurately compare rates between different money changers.

5. Use Local Currency

When you're traveling in Delhi, it's always better to use the local currency, which is the Indian Rupee (INR). While your home currency may be accepted in some places, you might get unfavorable exchange rates and hidden surcharges. Plus, using local currency offers a more authentic travel experience.

6. Be Wary of Counterfeit Currency

While Delhi has reputable money changers, it's essential to be cautious and avoid counterfeit currency. Stick to authorized money changers or banks to ensure the authenticity of your exchanged notes. Remember to count your money and double-check for counterfeit security features before leaving the exchange booth.

7. Carry Multiple Payment Options

While cash is necessary for certain transactions, it's wise to carry multiple payment options. Consider having a mix of cash, debit cards, and credit cards. This way, you'll have backup options in case of emergencies or if your primary payment method is not accepted. However, be mindful of foreign transaction fees if you decide to use your cards abroad.

8. Stay Vigilant During the Exchange

When exchanging your money, always stay vigilant and guard your personal information. Avoid exchanging money in crowded places or with individuals who seem untrustworthy. Keep an eye on the exchange rate and the total amount you're receiving to ensure accuracy.

9. Consider Prepaid Travel Cards

Prepaid travel cards are a convenient alternative to carrying too much cash. These cards allow you to load multiple currencies onto a single card and offer competitive exchange rates. Additionally, they provide security features and savings on foreign transaction fees. Research different options and choose a prepaid travel card that suits your needs.

Insider Secrets for Maximizing Your Travel Budget

Now that you have some currency exchange hacks up your sleeve, let's explore insider secrets for maximizing your travel budget. Here are some tips and tricks to stretch your funds while exploring Delhi:

1. Plan and Prioritize

Before you even step foot in Delhi, create a detailed budget for your trip. Consider your expenses for accommodation, food, transportation, attractions, and souvenirs. By planning ahead and allocating your funds wisely, you can make the most out of your travel budget.

2. Embrace Street Food

Delhi is a food lover's paradise, and you don't have to break the bank to savor its culinary delights. Explore the city's street food scene, where you'll find delicious dishes at affordable prices. From crispy samosas to flavorful chaat, Delhi's street food will satisfy your taste buds without draining your wallet.

3. Utilize Public Transportation

Delhi's public transportation system is extensive and cost-effective. Instead of relying solely on taxis or ride-sharing services, hop on a metro train or a local bus to get around the city. Public transportation not only saves you money but also gives you a glimpse into the daily lives of Delhi's residents.

4. Visit Free Attractions

Delhi is home to several iconic landmarks and attractions that you can visit for free. Immerse yourself in the city's history and culture by exploring places like India Gate, Qutub Minar, and Lotus Temple. These landmarks offer opportunities for stunning photographs and memorable experiences without spending a dime.

5. Blend in with the Locals

When traveling, try to blend in with the locals to avoid inflated prices targeted at tourists. Dress modestly, learn a few basic phrases in Hindi, and observe local customs. By immersing yourself in the local culture, you'll gain a more authentic experience and often find better deals.

6. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons

If possible, consider traveling to Delhi during off-peak seasons when accommodation and flight prices are lower. Avoid major holidays and peak tourist periods to save money on transportation and accommodation expenses. Plus, you'll enjoy exploring the city without dealing with overwhelming crowds.

7. Bargain Smartly

Bargaining is a common practice in Delhi markets, and it can be a fun way to score great deals. However, remember to bargain responsibly and respect the seller's livelihood. Aim for a fair price and maintain a friendly attitude during the process. Bargaining is all about finding a win-win situation.

Travel Money Exchange Tips

Let's wrap up our insider secrets with a few additional travel money exchange tips that will enhance your experience in Delhi:

1. Keep Small Denomination Notes

While larger denomination notes are convenient for certain expenses, it's always a good idea to carry small denomination notes as well. Small notes come in handy for street vendors, public transportation, and smaller establishments that may not have change for larger bills.

2. Notify Your Bank and Credit Card Providers

Prior to your trip to Delhi, inform your bank and credit card providers about your travel plans. This way, they won't flag your transactions as suspicious, and you can use your cards without any issues. Additionally, inquire about any foreign transaction fees or card usage restrictions that may apply.

3. Stay Alert for Currency Conversion Scams

While rare, currency conversion scams can occur. Be cautious of individuals who offer attractive exchange rates on the street or in touristy areas. Stick to authorized money changers or banks to ensure that you're getting the genuine rate without falling victim to scams.
With these insider secrets, currency exchange hacks, and travel money exchange tips, you're well-equipped to navigate the world of money exchange in Delhi. Remember, the key is to plan ahead, stay informed, and make your money work for you. Whether you're exploring the bustling streets of Chandni Chowk or gazing upon the magnificence of the Taj Mahal, you can travel with confidence knowing that your travel budget is in good hands.
Happy travels!

2024.05.16 13:16 philip_sterne Building a cluster for university students

I am a CS professor who will be running a distributed systems tutorial next semester. Now I have some practical experience with distributed systems (eg. Kafka, Zookeeper), but I have very little sysadmin experience. So I will describe my rough situation, and I'm asking for any and all of your opinions/suggestions/links etc.
I have a little 3-node Proxmox cluster that I would like to use as a test-bed for the students to mess around on. (There are roughly 10 students per semester taking this tutorial, but if it goes well I would open it up to ±60 students in related courses.)
My two main requirements are: 1. Low maintenance. I don't have time during the semester to do much maintenance (eg. scanning home drives to see who is over quota, adding new user ssh keys). 2. Reasonably resilient to dumb-assery. Students will be learning lots of new concepts for the first time, and I don't want one student to take down the whole cluster for everyone else.
I am also aware that there is only 1Gbps ethernet connecting the nodes, but I kinda view that as a feature, rather than a bug. I want students to think of network access as slow, while local access is fast.
My current thoughts: 1. I would like to have a central home directory that is mounted on each node. (So any files you create in your home directory are immediately available everywhere) 2. I think LDAP is the right solution to do authentication, and sync UIDs and GIDs between the nodes? (Although setting it up does look quite daunting!) 3. I'd hack together some sort auto-signup solution. eg. A google form (limited to university email addresses) where students can upload their ssh pub keys. Run a cron job which periodically downloads the backing spreadsheets and creates the users / updates ssh keys as appropriate. 4. Each node has an nvme drive, and a hard drive. So I was planning on storing all the vms on the nvme drive, with a passthrough mount of the hard drive on /data. This means that students would only ever be able to modify things in two places, home and data. 5. Each node can run a single Ubuntu VM for students to work on. One of the nodes is beefier than the others, so it could also run an openldap server, and serve the shared home directory.
Please critique! What am I missing? Is this too complicated, and if so, how can I make it simpler? Have you done something similar? What advice would you give me?
Obligatory meme for reading so far:

가상본을 만들어서 호스트에서 해당 디렉토리에 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 해봅시다. ln -s "/home/$USE.vaapp/com.usebottles.bottles/data/bottles/bottles/KakaoTalk/drive_c/users/steamuseDocuments/KakaoTalk Downloads" ~/Documents

Timeshift

and press Enter . The source refers to the drive where the deleted file was located, while the destination is where you want to recover the file to. For example, if you want to recover a file from drive C and save it to the desktop, you would type
winfr C: C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop
Step 4: The tool will start running in either regular or extensive mode, depending on the size of the file and the current status of the drive. It may take some time for the tool to finish scanning and recovering the file, so be patient.

Now you have successfully recovered your recently deleted photos using Renee Undeleter on your Windows PC. But what if you want to retrieve lost photos on a Mac? Don’t worry, our next chapter will guide you through the process.

For Mac Users - Using Built-in Utilities and third-party apps

Built-in Utilities

Time Machine: The First Line of Defense
For Mac users seeking to retrieve deleted photos, Time Machine stands as the premier built-in utility. To access it, connect the drive where your backups are stored, click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, and choose “ Enter Time Machine “. From here, you can navigate back to the date before the photo’s deletion and click “ Restore ” to recover your image. Ensure you have Time Machine set up and running before any data loss occurs.

Retrieving from the Photos App
The Photos application on macOS, replacing older apps like iPhoto and Aperture, also offers a safeguard against accidental deletion. Within the Photos app, deleted pictures are moved to the “ Recently Deleted ” album where they stay for 30 days before permanent removal. To restore, simply select the desired photo(s) and press “ Recover “. The chronological library and the ability to sort into albums make managing and retrieving your photos straightforward.

Utilizing Photo Booth for Recovery
In instances where you’ve used Photo Booth —a camera application that comes standard with macOS—deleted photos might be recoverable if they were recently removed. Check the app’s library for thumbnails of saved images, as they may still be present. Although recovery options within Photo Booth are limited, the thumbnails provide a quick visual reference for recently captured images that may have been deleted elsewhere on your system.

Third-party apps/service

Third-Party Data Recovery Software
When built-in options fall short, Mac users can turn to third-party software such as Undeleter , Disk Drill or PhotoRec for more robust recovery capabilities. These applications perform deep scans and can often recover files that are no longer visible to the user. They operate on the principle of file signatures, allowing them to identify various data types, including photos, and attempt to restore them. Remember to halt all use of the storage device immediately after data loss to prevent overwriting your deleted files.
https://preview.redd.it/8h9qn95psr0d1.png?width=875&format=png&auto=webp&s=1439161ffe9afca04fd1f6eb5d2bcb76b1411311
Professional Data Recovery Services
If all software-based methods fail to yield results, and the photos are irreplaceable, seeking professional data recovery services may be the next step. Despite being more expensive, these services provide specialized recovery techniques, particularly in cases of physical damage to storage media, offering the highest probability of retrieval for your valuable memories.
Tips:Ensure Time Machine is set up and runningbefore any data loss occurs.

For iPhone/iPad users

Understanding the “Recently Deleted” Album
On an iPhone, deleted photos first move to the “Recently Deleted” album within the Photos app. They remain there for 30 days, providing an immediate recovery option without the need for additional software. During this period, you can simply select the photos and tap “Recover” to restore them back to your main library.
https://preview.redd.it/jvce0weqsr0d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=11e8d7c52018ef08109e174f56982154e104238a
Tips:It’s crucial to understand that photos in the“Recently Deleted”album are permanently erased after 30 days or if the album is manually cleared.
Seeking Third-Party Data Recovery Solutions
When the “Recently Deleted” album is no longer an option, specialized software like Renee iPhone Recovery , Dr. Fone, iMyFone Data Recovery, and PhoneRescue can help. These tools attempt to recover lost data from deep within the iPhone’s storage. Although results can vary, many of these programs offer a preview feature to identify recoverable photos before purchase.
Recovering from Other Devices and Cloud Services
If third-party tools fail, check if the lost photos exist on other synced devices such as an iPad or a Mac . Cloud services like iCloud are also worth exploring, as they may have automatically backed up your photos. Additionally, images shared on social platforms may serve as an inadvertent backup.
Tips:Access your account via icloud.com in a web browser and log in with your Apple ID. Click onPhotos, thenRecently Deleted. This folder, much like theTrashin Google Photos or the Recycle Bin in Microsoft OneDrive, keeps deleted photos for up to30 days. Select the photos you want to recover and click Recover, and they will reappear in your iCloud Photos Library and on all devices with iCloud Photos enabled.
Considering Professional Data Recovery Services
While professional data recovery services can sometimes salvage photos that software cannot, they come at a significant cost and with no success guarantees. Such services should be a last resort, typically for irreplaceable photos, and it’s advisable to inquire about the likelihood of recovery before committing.

For Android Devices Efficiently

In today’s digital age, we use our smartphones to capture and store our precious memories in the form of photos. But what happens when we accidentally delete these photos? Thankfully, there are ways to retrieve them on Android devices efficiently. In this chapter, we will guide you through several methods to recover deleted photos on your Android device.
Step 1: Check Your Google Photos Trash
If you use Google Photos to back up your photos, then your deleted photos may still be in the trash for up to 60 days. To check, open the Google Photos app, tap on the three lines in the top left corner, and select “ Trash ” from the menu. If your photos are in the trash, tap on them and select “ Restore “. This will move the photos back to your main library.
https://preview.redd.it/nsm726tssr0d1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4c2f1726e0779954978bdbc5e168de91421c1de
Step 2: Use Your Device’s Gallery App
If you have deleted a photo from Google Photos, but it’s still on your device, then you can use your device’s gallery app to delete it. Simply open the gallery app, find the photo, and delete it. This will permanently remove the photo from your device.
Step 3: Try OneDrive Recycle Bin
If you have OneDrive backup set up on your Android device, then you can try recovering your deleted photos from the recycle bin. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Open OneDrive on your device.
  2. Tap on the three lines in the top left corner and select “ Recycle Bin “.
  3. Find the deleted photo and tap on it.
  4. Tap on “ Restore ” to move the photo back to your main library.
Step 4: Remove SD Card and Connect to a Computer
If you have photos stored on an SD card and they have been deleted, you can try recovering them by removing the SD card from your device and connecting it to a computer. You will need a card reader to do this.
Step 5: Use Data Recovery Software
If all else fails, you can try using data recovery software to retrieve your deleted photos on your Android device. There are many options available, but do thorough research and choose a reputable and reliable software to use.
Tips:Most third-party data recovery software necessitates rooting your Android phone prior to initiating the scan process. It’s important to be aware that rooting can void your manufacturer’s warranty and potentially disqualify your device from official repair services.
By following these techniques, you can efficiently recover deleted photos on your Android device. But what about lost photos on digital cameras or storage devices? Continue to our next chapter to learn about “Method 5: The Strategy of Recovering Lost Memories from Digital Cameras Storage” and the potential reasons why an SD card may lose data.

Recovering Lost Memories from Digital Cameras Storage

Storage media like SD cards are indispensable for digital cameras but can succumb to many forms of data loss, such as accidental deletion or card corruption. Water, heat, and even seemingly innocuous actions like ejecting the card during a write process can compromise the integrity of the data. For instance, exposure to moisture not only risks electronic failure but can also lead to data corruption, affecting the stored images on the SD card .
Immediate Response to Data Loss When data loss is detected, the initial response is critical. Ceasing all operations on the digital camera’s storage device is paramount. Users should avoid capturing new images or attempting to access the card with other devices, which can lead to overwriting the lost data, rendering it irrecoverable, data only appear to be gone but are actually waiting to be overwritten.

Preventive Measures: Tips to Avoid Future Photo Loss and Secure Your Memories

While it’s great to have methods for recovering deleted photos, it’s always better to not lose them in the first place. The recovery process may not always be successful, and it’s time-consuming. To avoid the stress of lost images, here are some preventive measures you can take:
Step 1: Regularly Back Up Your Photos
Protect your memories by regularly backing up photos using built-in utilities, third-party tools, or cloud services. Choose a weekly or monthly schedule and promptly back up new images after events or before system updates. Windows users can use File History, and Mac users can use iCloud for security.
Step 2:Create multiple partitions.
Organize photos into dedicated folders or create separate partitions on your storage device to minimize accidental formatting and allow space for backups, enhancing photo protection.
You can use Disk Utility on Macs to create multiple partitions on your external hard drive.
Step 3:Never write new photos to the same place as lost images.
If you’ve accidentally deleted photos, it’s important to stop using the device or storage media that contained the lost files. This is because the data is still physically on the device until it is overwritten. If you continue to use the device, you risk overwriting or corrupting the lost files, making it difficult to recover them.
If you’ve accidentally deleted photos from your camera’s SD card, remove the card and do not use it until you’ve attempted the recovery process.
Step 4:Auto-upload photos to the cloud.
Many devices have the option to automatically send your photos to the cloud, providing a backup that extends beyond your device. This eliminates the need for manual backups and offers additional storage space through your cloud provider. Popular services like Google Photos and iCloud make it easy to store and access your photos.
You can enable auto-upload for your photos on your iPhone through the iCloud settings.

Conclusion

Photographs are precious memories, and losing them to deletion or technical issues can be devastating. Our guide helps you recover lost photos from various devices, explaining the “recently deleted” folder and providing step-by-step recovery instructions for Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, and digital cameras. We highlight tools like Renee Undeleter for easier recovery and offer tips for backing up and managing files to protect your photos. This guide ensures you can restore and secure your memories for the future.

2024.05.16 12:59 LadderConfident8896 Was my old house haunted? And by what? Please give me your thoughts, I can’t get it out of my head!

Okay gonna be a long one! Sorry!
So back in 2014, my family and I (me, mum, stepdad, 2 stepbrothers), moved into this big old house as a blended family. It was already the ‘perfect horror movie house’, on the edge of town, opposite a cemetery, 200/300years old roughly and it backed onto an abandoned NHS hospital building (we’re in the UK). Anyway, we lived there for about 4 years until we moved to our current house (only a 2 minute walk away).
But ever since we lived there, I cannot stop thinking about all the weird shit that went down, I’ve even gone as far as contacting local archives etc for information on the property.
I guess I’m just asking if anybody has any guesses of wtf was going on there? It was absolutely horrendous, and I still have to drive past it literally everyday! I’ll try and do some vague bullet points of the general instances:
1.) Our first day/night in the house. Our garden as I said, backed onto an abandoned/ ruined hospital property with grounds etc. Only our garden fence separated this from us. The first afternoon/evening that we lived in the house, my brothers and I created a makeshift football goal out of logs balanced against a tree at the bottom of the hospital garden, we messed around for a bit, got bored and went off amongst the hospital buildings to explore. We were only gone for less than an hour, but when we came to go home and walked past our goal posts, somebody had gathered all the sticks and logs, and placed them into these super neat and accurate piles, sounds stupid but there’s no way the logs could’ve ‘fallen’ that way. We were so freaked out that our parents ended up telling us it was them who did it, but they admitted years after that it wasn’t them and they were equally freaked out.
2.) The plant! Okay so next, my mum and stepdad were gifted a plant when they got married. One day they were kinda pissed off at me and my brothers and said ‘Stop watering that plant, it doesn’t require regular watering and you’ll kill it’. My brothers and I were fairly young and frankly, didn’t even know what plant they were talking about. Few days passed and our parents got really annoyed, they told us the plant was dying and we really had to stop it. It even went as far as them moving and hiding this plant in different locations, nothing worked, and the plant died. My brothers both swear to god even now that it wasn’t them- I truly believe it wasn’t.
3.) My brother walking past my mum.. okay so the next one, my mum was stood in my bedroom doorway chatting to me, and she saw my younger brothe a figure, walk from his room at the end of the hall, into the bathroom. All cool? Except then she went downstairs and my 2 brothers and stepdad were all sat on the sofa watching football together. She doesn’t believe in any paranormal stuff at all, but she was so so freaked out by this.
4)General constant stuff! So as well as key moments like this (there are waaaay too many to list in one post) we had our two dogs, super well behaved, but would act WEIRD in this one spot in the garden, they’d snarl and then like cry and whine and lie down as though someone was screaming at them? Every damn night! I also had a wooden sign on the back of my bedroom door, we had no windows at all in the upstairs hall at all (old house), so no way for a draft, but every night after midnight, the sign would bang against my door as though someone was knocking??
Idk! Sorry for the long post and I have loads to add if anybody is interested!
Someone pls answer though, I’m always thinking about it all!
