2024.05.16 03:15 CoffeeBlack05 Heads up, demon players

Streamer named Platinum.ttv will hold the game hostage as survivor.
Played normal for the first part of the game, but once I had downed the team, he no longer went for revives, objectives, anything. Just jumped from car to car, driving and honking the entire 30 min. I saved a 15 min clip I can edit down if you'd like to see. Poor teammates were new and 2 of them sat dead the entire match.
Went into their chat and they banned me immediately. Just dodge them.

2024.05.16 03:14 Thomyslaw How Immortal Draft Ruins DotA

I'll be taking an extended break from DotA due to how awful the player draft is, so let's air out some grievances with it:
All of this could have been simply avoided if they kept the same system below 6.5k mmr. I'm sure no one would complain if matches took 5-10 extra minutes to find if it meant that everyone got to play their role and avoid all of the shenanigans of this awful system.

2024.05.16 03:05 o0TG0o Checking Some Localization - Cold Steel III: Chapter 3 (1/2)

Once again, my next post concerning the localized script of Cold Steel III. With this, I'll tackle the first part of Chapter 3. The points shown here are based on my sensibilities as to what lines cause issues for the dialogue, from being outright wrong to being awkward. My previous posts are listed below:

Chapter 3

The localization has Jusis word this an absolute. "当主" should refer to the actual head of the house. Jusis could've said: [I take it this means House Hyarms will be the only one of the Four Great Houses in with it's head attendance?]
The phrasing choice of "earlier" in the localization makes this reference to a moment in Chapter 1, pretty much two months ago, strange. It feels like way too much like a direct translation of "この前," without the context. Millium could've said: [Every bit as tasty as the pancakes Tilly and I had (anything that'd make more sense) before/in Leeves/a couple months ago.]
Random moment in the localization where refering to the jaeger corp in question as just "the dragons"/"竜" is omitted. There were no issues in any other instance. Shirley could've said: [I figured the dragons would be good, but the other guys are no slouches themselves.]
The original has it as "changed"/"変わり," not outright lost. Gareth could've said: [The dragon changed its head, and as for the other group, well...]
The localization phrases this in a different way than it should. It's denoted that "the dragons and these jaegers in purple" are emphasized as the "two strongest jager corps"; however, the original is listing the four in the scene. Sara could've said: [We've got two of the strongest jaeger corps--Zephyr and the Red Constelation--the dragons and these jaegers in purple, battling it out.]
The localization changes the clear question about the actual term she read about, just to make it sillier. Besides the fact that it even chooses to swap "council" for "conference." Juna could've said: [What's this Provincial Council thing about?]
The localization omits the time held captive, "one week"/"一週間." Old Man Rod could've said: [One time, some bandits captured me and held me in a stone prison for a whole week...]
「I heard that they sealed it up so that the Noble Alliance wouldn't get their hands on it.」 / 「貴族勢力に使われないよう厳重に封印したって聞いたけど……」
Very weird way to phrase this line by the localization. Especially considering that it is also said "they sealed it" in the next line. The original already mentions the "military"/"軍." Celine could've said: [Speaking of which, was/wasn't the Azure Knight ever retrieved by the military?]
The localization lumps the meaning of reaching the "pinnacle" or "heights"/"極み" and "enlightenment"/"理" to be the same thing as "mastering"/"奥伝" the 7th form. That's simply wrong. Yun Ka-Fai's letter could've said: [Reaching the pinnacle of this form is more difficult than any other. I do not know if you are even capable of attaining "enlightenment", yet...]
The localization adds what I assume is meant to be a "threesome" joke. Sharon could've said: [Not to mention, I can't imagine you'd like me to intrude on your private time♡]
The localization saw fit to omit the specifications of the district. Elise could've said: [My school/St. Astraia/the Girl's School and the cathedral are both in the Sankt District, in case you were wondering.]
Actually, it's completely wrong. When questioned, by Rean, that she's never been to Armorica Village before, she's not supposed to have "studied in the village." Elise should've said: [Yes, I haven't. However, when I was accompanying the inspection team in Crossbell, I did some studying/read all *about it.]
「What is it that the Nord people worship?」 / 「ノルドの民が、空の女神と同じくらい大切にしているものは?」
There isn't supposed to be a comparison that reads as if the Nord people worship "something else" instead of Aidios. Rean could've said: [They also have the Goddess of the Sky, but they worship something else equally.]
「With such an amazing faculty member, Thors must really be an excellent school.」 / 「あんなに優秀な職員さんが いるなんて、トールズってやっぱり名門校なのねぇ。」
「Hahaha...(That doesn't quite seem like Celestin, but...)」 / 「ははは……(セレスタンさんはちょっと特別な気もするが……)」
The localization got this one completely wrong. How is describing Celestin as "knowledgeable about cooking" and "helpful" not like him? That response makes no sense. First, the second line should read more generalizing the compliments to the whole staff; Cattleya could've said: [With such an amazing faculty member/members Thors must really be an excellent school.] Second, the meaning is that "Celestin is a unique case among the faculty" (in regards to being so amazing.) Rean could've said: [Hahaha... (That doesn't quite seem like anyone but Celestin...)]
The localization also got this one wrong. The Japanese don't come across as completely unaware. The assumption of this scene is that to Wayne is standing outside the training hall. Rean could've said: [Huh...? (Wait, the one outside would be...)]
The localization omits the time spent traveling, "半年." Rean could've said: [She also said she apprenticed under a female martial artist and traveled around Erebonia for six months...]
The localization simplifies the explanation. Rean could've said: [Yeah, thanks to this pendant Emma imbued with her magic.)
「What a nightmarish beast that cryptid was...」 / 「はぁ、まさかあんな恐ろしい魔物がいるなんて……」
The localization mistranslated "fiend"/"魔物" for "cryptid"/"幻獣." Kurt could've said: [A monster? Wait that's some kind of fiend!] Musse could've said: [What a nightmarish beast that fiend was...]
The localization removes the direction of the city. The narration could've said: [After paying a visit to Professor Schmidt, Rean walked George to the station, where his train back to Roer, in the northeast, was waiting.]
The localization removes the remark about the duration of the last stand. Aurelia could've said: [I considered making a last stand there for a year, but news of the Northern War reached me.]
The localization changes, addressing Towa by her surname. Munk could've said: [You'll be just fine, Herschel. Now let's get this show on the road!]
The localization omits taking social classes into account. Munk could've said: [Not to mention, as the student council president, you were highly regarded by many of your fellow students--nobles and commoners alike.]
The localization omits the mention of the brand. Musse could've said: [Heehee. No elegant young maiden can resist the call of Mariage Cross beautiful lace/Mariage Cross' beautiful lace.]
The localization completely changes, from specifically teasing Elise to just be more of a general tease. Musse could've said: [I've heard that the princess has gifted you many such lace.]
The localization chooses to translate the general term for "ammunition"/"弾薬" to be specifically gunpowder. Marcus could've said: [Although, I was shocked when she tried to pay for it with ammunition/ammo/(maybe) *bullets".]
The localization randomly chooses to translate "yokan"/"羊羹" as just generic "eastern sweets", after having no problem doing it correctly in all other instances. Rean could've said: [How about some assorted yokan?]
The localization phrases the arrangement weirdly. Juna could've said: [Well, we've (Elise, Musse and Juna) basically just decided on the menu together with the Cooking Club.]
「I'm also worried about the 'true story' that Vita mentioned.」 / 「クロチルダさんが言っていた“真なる物語”というのもあったな。」
Again, it's made to use "Vita" instead of "Clotilde." I've already explained in previous posts how these changes can affect the dynamics of characters negatively. Rean could've said: [I'm also worried about the 'true story' that Clotilde mentioned.]
The localization removes what Roselia told Emma. Celine could've said: [From the day the Elder said 'forget all about heVita', Emma began training and studying as hard as she could with one goal...)
The localization swaps "used" or "piloted"/"使っていた" for "mentioned." Rean could've said: [That's the golden Spiegel the principal used!]
The localization omits the joke. The narration could've said: [And so, Aurelia finished (gently) training the members of Class VIII...]
The localization chose to phrase this as there's supposed to be reservation against these events being held at the same time. That wasn't particularly present originally. Tatiana could've said: [The Summer Festival is going to be held at the same time as Pronvicial Council...]; or: [I hear that the Provincial Council will be held together with the Summer Festival...]
The localization puts this as if it's a 'known regular hobby'. Tita could've said: [From what I heard, Olivier played his lute under it *once.]
「I hope our boss is doing well.」 / 「それにしても──女将さん、元気だといいんだが。」
The localization creates an awkward confusion for these lines. What would be expected is that "boss" would be the fleet's boss, but it's actually talking about the owner of the sailor bar, Miranda, by using "owner" or "landlady"/"女将さん." Leonora could've said: [I hope Miranda/the owner is doing well.]
「I think it'll be an eye-opening experience for everyone, yeah?」 / 「坊ちゃんやらジャジャ馬にだっていい社会勉強になるんじゃねえか?」
「Though I might consider doing something after we're done with the field exercises.」 / 「せめて演習が終わった最終日なら引率込みで考えなくもないが。」
「Huh...? Well, aren't you a stingy one?」 / 「ハァ……?チッ、ケチくせえ野郎だな。」
The point of the line doesn't really come across that well in the localization. It sounds like the punchline to responding to Ash's proposal to allow Class VII to go out in the nightlife of Raquel is that "I'll consider doing that by myself." That couldn't be more wrong. Rena could've said: [Though I might consider chaperoning you guys after we're done with the field exercises.]
Literally mistranslates "current"/"現." Altina could've said: [The current Duke Cayenne is still under arrest and no replacement has been named.]
Ash's line originally ends at the first clause.
The localization omits tthe fact that the snipers are from the army. Maya could've said: [I hear there are some snipers in the Imperial Army who chose the Hector... but I suppose it all comes down to feeling.]
The localization removes the previous remark. Rean could've said: [This way leads to Raquel--We need to focus on getting to Ordis.]
The choice of "used" makes the sentence read as a characteristic beyond the single event the Japanese refers to. Ash could've said: [Damn. So that monster locked herself/cozied up in there with fifty-thousand soldiers.]
「It's fully equipped with multiple Panzer Soldats, large-class airships, and enough supplies and anti-aircraft cannons to last three years.」/ 「多数の機甲兵に大型飛行艇、3年は継戦できるだけの物資、対空砲も完備していましたから。」
In the context of "the Noble Alliance forces, after the civil war ended, barricaded themselves in Juno Naval Fortress," the localization wrongly chooses to put it as "during the war." Much the same, the second line is supposed to be talking about that single past event. Altina could've said: [It was equiped with multiple Panzer Soldats, large-class airships, and enough supplies amd anti-aircraft cannons to last three years.]
The localization translated this line very wrongly. The situation being "shifted" isn't the Northern War. Rean could've said: [To resolve that situation (Aurelia's barricade in Juno), the deal to set out for the Northern War was struck.]
The localization omits the mention of the Main Battle Tanks. Ash could've said: [I don't see any Main Battle Tanks/MBTs/Achtzenhs or Goliath Soldats. Do you?]
「Activity that's led us to believe they're planning something for the Imperial Provincial Council in Lamare.」 / 「ール州で開かれる領邦会議に合わ・せるように。」
「Over the past six months, there haven't been any confirmed reports of jaeger corps activity within the Empire.」 / 「──ここ半月、帝国各地で 活動していた複数の猟兵団の動きが確認できなくなっている模様。」
By virtue of omitting information, the localization causes this line to have the wrong information. In the first line. Wallace could've said: [But over the past half a month/two weeks, we've not seen activity from the multiple jaeger corps which, until then, had been moving suspiciously in the Empire starting six months ago.] Consequentially, it's the lack of movement so close to the Provincial Council that makes them wary. The third line straight up mistranslated "half a month"/"半月." Wallace could've said: [Over the past half a month/two weeks, there haven't been any confirmed reports of jaeger corps activity within the Empire.]
The localization outright mistranslates "tomorrow"/"明日." The Provincial Army Soldier could've said: [Ordis will hold the Imperial Provincial Council starting tomorrow. Immediately after that's done is the Summer Festival.]
「The Port City, Ordis.」 / 「《紺碧の海都》オルディスへ。」
The localization refuses to establish a term for this other name that Rean and Musse call Ordis. Given some uses of the Japanese term, it could be "Saphirl Port City"; given the name of a food item in the city, perhaps "Aquamarine Port City"; even if not the same kanji, maybe "Azure Port City." As long as it's not entirely omitted from the game.
The localization omits mentioning the location of the monster. Ash could've said: [Yeah, but once we're done sightseein', we've got a monster to kill on the beach to the south/southern beach/beach south of the city.]
The localization singles out Luna. Lord Quinn could've said: [I hope Luna and Eclair aren't too bored.]
The localization messes up the timeframe a little. The Provincial Army Soldier could've said: [You're in luck. With the Summer Festival happening soon, the town is really buzzing with activity.]
Just like in Chapter 2, a maid is made to call her "master"/"lord" her husband by virtue of the fact that the Japanese term can be used for both. Pamela could've said: [My Master/Lord doesn't like things that come from the capital.]
It's not meant to be "households "in plural; the context here is that the glass workshop is used by the Cayenne estate. Musse could've said: [In addition to the taverns, there's an orbment store, and a glass workshop that is popular with the duke household/Cayenne/duke's estate*.]
「My big brother is coming back tomorrow!」 / 「今日は兄ちゃんが帰ってくるんだよ!」
Straight up mistranslating "today"/"今日" in the localization. Luka could've said: [Guess what! My big brother is coming back today!]; And: [My big brother is coming back today!]
The localization omits the line also havimg mention of the fact that the emperor is the award giver. Luther could've said: [Gramps is the ultimate craftsman. He even received the Golden Emblem from His Majesty himself.]
「We get all our seafood from Rossel.」 / 「ちなみに魚介はそこのロッセルさんが卸してくれるんだ。」
The localization got this line wrong. It's not about drinking a lot, even the owner of the inn says the same, "卸して." Just as mentioned in the second line, by the tavern owner, Edmond. Old Man Rossel should've said: [Though, all I do nowadays is sell my catches here!]
The localization chose to have the guy who's emamored with his new boat, and gave it it's own name, ultimately call it a "this." The Cheerful Man could've said: [I need to make sure it doesn't compromise Radiance's beauty.]
The original isn't really about being or not being "self-made." Lord Beckford could've said: [I had to rid myself of some of the merchant ships my grandfather passed down to me as if they were worthless!]
The localization makes up the logic that the count would somehow still be in doubt of the participation of Great Houses with one day to go. Count Florald should've said: [I mean, will all four of the Great Houses' thoughts even be in alignment? This truly is mindboggling.]
The whole point of the quest is to make "decorations"/"飾り" for the Summer Festival, and the localization decides it should be "accessory." Kurt should've said: [So this is a jade shell...It'd make for quite the decorarion.]
The original doesn't make it sound like the Purple Jaegers already lost men against Rean and Class VII. The Purple Jaeger should've said: [There's no point in us losing our forces here today.]
The localization mistranslated this line and also makes it sound silly. None of the characters put any doubt that there are jaegers around or that the Purple Jaegers are jaegers; needing to confirm that just comes across as awkward. Patrick should've said: [It would have been great if we had actually captured those jaegers roaming the area.]
The original is about "accepting the government's reform plan"/"政府の改革案を受け入れる. Lord Beckford should've said: [This is a travesty! Does Marquis Ballad truly intend to accept the reforms of the government like this?!]
The original is about the lovers being in Ordis "every year"/"毎年" during the Provincial Council. Hearhcliff could've said: [We both come to town every year while the council is underway.]
The localizations not only mistranslate "current"/"現" but also "sentenced"/"判決が出される." Reins should've said: [The current Duke Cayenne is about to be sentenced.]
「You can enjoy the night life without worrying about the time.」 / 「鉄道のお時間を気にせず歓楽街を楽しむ事ができますよ。」
The first localized line gives the wrong idea. That would cause the second line to likely be interpreted as "Ordis' night life" when it's actually about in "Raquel"/"ラクウェル". Receptionis Harold should've said: [Our hotel offers a taxi service jto and from Raquel*.]
The localization singles out Juna, when it's her and Class VII. Louise could've said: [Juna and everyone/Everyone/Class VII, see you later.]
The localization leaves to the imagination, for better or for worse to some, that she got a "nosebleed"/"鼻血." Angelica could've said: [Haha. Well, the three girls were so cute that I got a nosebleed--ahem, excuse me.]
The localization mistranslated "町" as "school," which doesn't have anything to do with it. Sister Olfa should've said: [There was a shooting near the city the other day...]

2024.05.16 02:57 spaceguy101 Predictions for Free Agency?

I've been fooling around on CapFriendly and was curious what y'all thought about these potential UFA targets or who you have been eye-ing to sign?
  1. I'll start by saying that I think the Kings should move PLD from center to wing, where he doesn't have to drive play as much and isn't required to be as physical as in C. Interestingly, he played RW throughout juniors before switching to C in the NHL, so I think this may be a natural fit. I then have Byfield slotting into the 2C spot, allowing him to grow and hopefully be prepared to take 1C by the time Kopi retires.
  2. Unless we come to a team friendly term with them, I think Arvidsson and Roy are gone. Byfield is our number one priority to re-sign, and as much as I'd like to lock him up for term I think that both team and player will take a shorter bridge contract. Secondarily, we will have to re-sign Spence, Turcotte, and Grundstrom; all of whom I think earned a pay raise with their play so far. Lastly, I think that we bring back Lewis at league minimum, assuming he wants to play one more year. I'm assuming the deals for these players would look something like:
Byfield: 3yrs x $4,500,000
Spence: 2yrs x $1,750,000
Turcotte: 2yrs x $1,350,000
Grundstrom: 1yr x $1,750,000
Lewis: 1yrs x $875,000
This probably leaves us with about $8million in cap space, and the following line-up:
Fiala - Kopitar - Kempe
(open) - Byfield - PLD
Moore - Danault - Laferiere
Grundstrom - Turcotte - Lewis
Thomas
Anderson - Doughty
Gavrikov - Spence
(open) - Clarke
(open)
Rittich
So where to fill these gaps?
Forwards
  1. Tyler Bertuzzi. A modern-era power forward who would bring youth, intensity, puck hounding, along with some scoring upside. I see him as fitting perfectly into our team, bringing the sandpaper we desperately need while also helping improve our scoring ability. He has also shown his ability to play up and down the lineup, giving us good flexibility on the left side. Currently on a $5million contract, I could see the Kings signing him with a modest pay bump and term.
  2. Tyler Toffoli. Cupcakes. What can I say, a reunion would be so sweet and also would make sense for both parties. Toffoli can offer a scoring touch and is already familiar with the Kings system, having even found some success with Kopi before. More slotted for top-6 role, the infusion of leadership into the locker room can also not be overlooked. Currently has a $4.3 million cap hit, rumor is that he is looking for some term. As a 32 year old, Kings likely could sign him for a few years with a modest raise.
  3. Teuvo Teravainen. I think Teravainen has a lower ceiling than the other two players mentioned, but is still able to consistently put up points. He offers more of a power play scoring specialty, which I don't need to explain why the Kings desperately need this. Currently has a $5.6million cap hit and at 29 is likely looking for a sizeable raise from his previous contract.
Defense
  1. Jacob Movarare. I think Movarare has been serviceable during his last few call ups and would be a safe option to hold down our third pairing. While not likely to blow us away, his budget contract (currently an AAV of $775,000) and steady play makes him my top choice to fill out or D Corps.
Goalie
  1. Laurent Brossoit. Similiar to the Talbot/Rittich duo this season, I think that running a Brossoit/Rittich duo next season may not be spectacular it could still provide us with the saves we need. At a current $1.75million cap hit, he is likely a good balance of budget and performance.
  2. Saros, Ullmark, Gibson, or other trade. The Kings have definitely been shopping for a big name goalie, however, I'm not convinced we need to swing for the fences to get a top $ goalie this offseason. As shown last season by the Talbot/Rittich duo, the Kings can shelter their goalie and don't require them to bail the team out too often. Additionally, teams like VGK have shown that this method can work for deep runs. While I think that cap space would be better spent on improving the forwards and horrendous PP, I could also see the Kings taking a stab at a bigger name. I do think this approach would only make sense if there are plans to re-sign the goalie and commit long-term, likely to the detriment of Portillo. If they think he is the goalie of the future, then we likely hold the course and don't make any big goalie moves until he is ready to be 1G.
So what do y'all think? I'm curious to hear your thoughts about the targets I found, or if there are any others on your radar!

2024.05.16 02:56 Fire_anelc Ruining the fun for cheaters while having a great time.

To start, I'm a regular player since launch but never never improved much beyond a certain point. Right now I sit with a 1.3 lifetime k/d, have been finishing the battlepasses and getting a good grip of each season but I'm always solo queue since none of my friends would even give another try to the game.
Understandable mostly because of the matchmaking and how hard it is to improve in beginning specially if I play with them. These last seasons have been harsh and now a days, the matches feel totally manipulated to either give advantages to certain squads to win the game while other lose, matching predators with players with worst than 1 K/d and even worst, the dubious aim and behaviour that makes me think how good their gaming chairs are.
NOW TO GET INTO THE POINT, usually the game puts me on European servers, where my experience playing is as described above. I recently tried to connect to other servers to see if things could be even worst like I see in Reddit or youtube. Tried New York. Saw for the first time someone using super aimbot blatantly and got shocked.
Decided to go deeper. Taiwan 2. Long wait in lobby, seems like there is only 2 or 3 games at the same time with low population. And with good internet, the game helps a lot with the low ping which you can get used to.
But the match it self? Oh boy. Your team will consist of 3 options 1 - boosters who are probably pumping an account.
2 - bots to be farmed, easily recognisable by their names. They will drop in line along the whole map so boosters can kill them easily and stay in place.
3 - people like me, super rare but important to recognize since all of them recognize the mission without me saying a word. Driven by pure fun and having a good time playing this game again, we all know what's the best possible win: ruin the day of these cheaters with raw skill.
If your team consists of number 1 option, then you can only start the diplomatic way by politely asking for their integrity as players. "Why do you do this? This is super boring to do. Why farm?" They don't expect any real players in their squads and the first thing they'll do is to ask to go along. Which I didn't. I will never want to do what these people are doing and avoid shooting the bots at all costs, UNLESS I can steal the kills of the booster teammate. Shooting exactly the same targets he aims at. And the best part is that while one account is being boosted, the other is just being a spotter. He pings a target that he finds and I can focus on stealing the kill at the best time.
If your team has number 2 or 3 options, then the game is simple: hunt the cheaters and have a jolly good apex time. Yes they will have cheats, aim bot, punch boosting, maybe wall hacking. But since they lack so much skill and are playing a total different game of doing a shores along the map, they turn into easy prey and get outplayed.
Basically I'm having fun hunting these guys and receiving messages on Xbox offering me 20 kills badges and to be friends. It's easy to bully the same cheaters by queueing at the same time but it's guaranteed cheater lobby anyways.
I will never use a badge acquired by farming bots and have been actively avoiding it so in these matches.
Sorry for the long post since I decided to be as informative as possible about my experience. I really hope more people can join these games not just to see the real state of the game but also to refresh some fun into the game. What makes me sad is that most of the cheaters in my squad were definitely European and soon they would go back to cheat in normal servers.

2024.05.16 02:53 jysm35 What am I doing wrong? who are the "other candidates"?

I am grateful to have had at least a couple of internships before i graduated but it seems like they mean nothing.
Lately i've been getting rejected right after applying by a lot of small non-tech companies like local hospital networks, retail companies, healthcare companies, etc
I'm applying to junioassociate/level 1 SWE roles so its not like i'm competing with people with 10 YEO. are ex-faang, ex-jane street people really applying to these kinds of places? because who else could those "other candidates" be?

2024.05.16 02:47 HunterWithGreenScale [TOMT] [TV] [2002] )(IS A REUPLOAD) CGI Cartoon show or Bumper from early 2000s about 2 Chicken Scientist trying to solve ancient question: What came first? Chicken or Egg. Involved a time traveling mouse.

I took a trip to West Virginia around summer of 2002 when i was a kid, to visit family. While there i was watching tv in the morning (i believe it was a local or regional channel and not a cable/satellite channel) when a particular show of some kind came on involving two anthropomorphic chicken scientist trying to find the answer to the old causality dilemma: Which came first? The Chicken or the Egg?
From what i remember, the two were each arguing from both ends of the classic philosophical question (one of the chickens was possibly named "Dougie" though that particular detail of my memory is very foggy) and were planning on sending a tiny mouse, with a tiny camera helmet, through a time machine to the distant, prehistoric past to get their answer once and for all. Shenanigans ensue, and through quick and cleaver maneuvering by the mouse, the two scientist get stuck in the machine, and are transported back to the time of the dinosaurs. Once there, they find a giant egg sitting before them. With one scientist apparently proven the victor (the one possibly called "Dougie"), a large, purple T-rex, but with a chicken's head for a head, comes up behind them as they look up in fear. It pecks the both of them off the ground, and eats them, before walking off commenting, "taste like chicken". The mouse back in the future watches all of this through the helmet camera that went them, as the mini-show comes to an end.
I call this a mini-show because from what i believe this was not an episode from some established local, or regional, children's show, but rather a lengthy CGI animated bumper "show" that aired on a certain local or regional channel, in between traditional cartoons at the time in the early 2000's around West Virginia (i was in or near the town of Weston at the time if that matters). I know no further details on it beyond this. Not the channel. Not of any shows that were playing before or after. Or what kind of channel it was (educational, religious, regular, etc). It definitively wasn't any of the big three (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, or Disney) that's for sure. Nor other more nationally famous ones like Fox Kids, CBS (possibly or not for this one. Not sure), etc.
Does this show ring any bells? I'd like to know what's its name was.

2024.05.16 02:34 Success-Beautiful As a PO, how do you deal with a SM that doesn't get the things done

As a Product Owner overseeing multiple products, I collaborate with two Scrum teams who share the same Scrum Master. Recently, we’ve encountered some issues related to work completion and delivery to production.
Over the past several Sprints, our teams haven’t successfully delivered any features to PROD. The Scrum Master consistently refers to work as “completed” for the Sprint Reviews (I get to see the acceptance criteria met during the demos), but when I request deployment to PROD, he informs me that QA is still pending. QA for a User Story occurs one or two Sprints after coding, leading to a growing backlog of features awaiting release.
The Scrum Master continues to ask for new work for his development team without addressing the existing backlog. I’ve made it clear that we can discuss new features once the backlog is resolved, but progress remains stagnant.
Adding to the challenges, our Scrum Master conducts daily stand-up meetings without a visible task board for the Sprint. Instead, he simply calls out names one by one, saying, “Okay, next.” This lack of structure has led to issues—team members sometimes face obstacles, but the Scrum Master appears disengaged and dismissive. The delivery manager and I had to step in multiple times to address these issues. (yes, we attend these meetings, because he suggested it was good for us to hear from the team directly, I don't mind, the team is great, but we ended up doing his job).
Given this situation, we’ve made the decision to stop attending the daily stand-ups altogether. It’s as if we’re letting the plane crash rather than trying to keep it afloat.
Initially, I placed my trust in the Scrum Master, especially given his reputation as an “expert agile practitioner.” I thought, “Perhaps he has more experience, and I should remain open-minded about his approach.” However, as time went on, it became clear that our collaboration faced significant challenges. I also recognize that I made a mistake by adding new work items for the team when they hadn’t delivered.
We have another Sprint Planning next week, and I already know we're going to miss our Sprint goal.
I'm into a point where I'm about to pick up the phone and ask his boss to fire him, so, I’m seeking advice on how to navigate this situation effectively. As I'm sure there are many options I haven't even considered yet. (please be brutally honest on your answers, I can handle it).
Thank you in advance.

2024.05.16 02:34 Wide-Ad4145 Have you interacted with the Supervisor Doug?

Before anyone asks my metrics are great! The other day I was on a shop and delivery when I started experiencing issues with the QR Code. I called over help from the store and their was nothing they could do, so I called customer service, while inside of the store, I first spoke with an agent by the name of Jennifer who didn't believe I was having issues(now keep in mind I already have a ticket in to the engineers about app issues on version 4.10.0 for Android with screenshots and recordings to show my issue) She wasn't interested in the ticket and wouldn't help me cancel the order because I was unable to do so. I asked to speak with a supervisor and that's when Doug answered the line. Doug was highly rude and kept saying well if you were at a Walmart store then they could help you. I had the team lead, ODT or whatever it's called Manager and the Store Coach trying to assist and even tell him that even they needed his help because there was nothing they could do, and they saw there was nothing I could do. Well Doug kept tossing around that he was corporate Walmart and he didn't want to speak to them and that he was sending a complaint to the trust and safety team, and they all thought he was rude. Well I turned off my Spark and decided to turn it back on today and saw that it was deactivated. I didn't receive a deactivation email or text. I filed an appeal and automatically filed a complaint on Jennifer and Doug, and I sent a request over for arbitration. I've dealt with Arbitration before when Spark owed me hundreds of dollars, which I received my money. When going through this process keep documentation, whenever an agent says they will email you after the call, just ask them if they can do it while you are still on the line so that you can keep up with the reference numbers it's a great way to keep up with dates and times and what the calls were about. Let's see how this goes... Wish me luck!!

2024.05.16 02:31 nicki259 Contract Employee and Termination in Illinois

I was hired on as a contract employee (6 months) on 2/12/24. To my understanding, I was doing well and meeting any expectations the company had of me. Got the job through a staffing agency and was working for a fleet management company.
On 5/8/24, I was messaged on Microsoft Teams by another employee (on contract) and was told to Google the name of another employee. I looked up the information to find that the employee they mentioned is a registered sex offender. So I messaged my coworker to let her know (to be careful, not to spread rumors) and she was surprised by the information, told me to delete it and she texted me instead. The next day I go to work and everything is as always, I did my job and went home. Around 8:15 that night, my recruiter calls me to tell me the fleet management company has ended my contract for spreading rumors about another employee.
I do have a couple of screenshots and to my understanding, the coworker that I told about the situation, told another employee who told the manager. I’m feeling as if this might be wrongful termination? Is the staffing agency supposed to back me up in a situation like this? Or is this something I have a chance of pursuing legally?

2024.05.16 02:26 fickle-doughnut123 I just finished rebirth and have some questions / bad takes

Bad Questions:
  1. If Nanakis fire tail goes out, does he die like charmander?
  2. How come in some scenes they aim guns at the team and the people being aimed at are terrified yet in battles I'm getting shot and it doesn't hurt that much.
  3. Why does it say Bort on the chocostops. My sons name is also Bort.
Bad takes:
  1. When I was a kid, I loved Aerith, but now as an adult I now love Tifa.
  2. Moogles are weird sexualised baby voiced creatures. Hey there Kupo :)

2024.05.16 02:22 Sure_Squirrel_4344 Made a mistake... pulled out the wrong patient’s Foley.

I’m on an off service rotation, the patient list is unusually super busy this month and the co-resident is on vacation so I’m kinda alone. Work hours long and few days off. A couple of patients on the list had similar names and I was supposed to order one’s foley to be discontinued but discontinued the other one’s instead. It got pulled but his urine output had to be recorded for strict ins and outs for an acute condition and now it’s all inaccurate...
Now the whole team has been notifying one another and reaching out to me for an explanation, and I feel like I fucked up big time Does this sort of thing get escalated to program directors and such? I feel bad for the patient who has to get it replaced which sucks, and I’m sure word is going to spread and the team will be pissed.
It’s near the end of intern year and I’m super pissed I messed up. What should I do now? I can’t stop thinking about this shit..

2024.05.16 02:12 sheriffderek Massive Skill Gap: Are Coding Bootcamps and New Developers Missing the Mark? A recent chat with DonTheDeveloper.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to one of Don’s rants and I went through and commented on each of the points. I can't find that post, but I had copied it over here: https://www.reddit.com/perpetualeducation/comments/1c7k9re/donthedeveloper_on_a_rant_about_how_aspiring/
We had a chat about it. Here’s the video/podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmqZkC3LqU&lc
Don titled it: There's a MASSIVE Skill Gap Among New Developers
I'll attempt to write a bit about that - (even though we went over many other topics - and I'm having a hard time grouping them)
It’s easy to simplify this into “the market” or “the boot camp” or “the tech stack” or "what's fair" or "the resume" - but I think people are missing the various multidimensional aspects at play. Is it:
Is it all of those things - and more? (Yes). And it's "the student" too." We're all different (cue reading rainbow moment). But it's true. Some of us are slower. Some of us are faster but miss the details. Some of us have a background that alignes neatly with tech. Some of us already know what job we want and why - and other people just want to make a good bet on a stable career. No matter what zone you're in, we still have to face the music - and deal with (trigger alert) - the truth.
The market is real. Companies aren't aggressively hireing random barely capable developers right now (like they have in the past). They're scared and holding on to their money. They also kinda realized they were spending more money on middle management and probably developers too - and are going to need some time to figure out how to make profitable businesses (or how to keep getting more VC funding to burn through).
But if there's a huge gap between your skills/experience and what it takes to do the job you're applying for, none of the other factors matter.
Many people choose a coding boot camp based on superficial factors like the price, the timeline, the website design, and the sales pitch. They often don't consider other important aspects because they simply don't know better. This isn’t unlike any other product or service or school.
Some people pick out a boot camp and learn a bunch of awesome stuff and they go out there and start a new career and for some reason, they don’t come back to Reddit to tell us about it. There are some legit colleges and boot camps and other alternative learning paths out there - that are really great. It's just a fact.
If you read the bootcamp marketing, paid your tuition, went through the steps they lined out, and came out the other end unable to get that job they promised you, well - that’s awkward. Maybe for you, it’s that simple. If you feel like you got a raw deal, I’m sorry. There are some businesses that should be ashamed of themselves - but they won't be. All you can do is warn other people. That’s over now. We can only work with the present.
For people who really want to work in this industry - they'll keep moving forward: at the end of the day, this is the playing field. So, if you want to get off the bench, we’re going to have to design a path to that – and you might need to rethink some of your assumptions.
It could certainly be said that new developers are now expected to know about–and have experience with–a lot more things.
Are the expectations that someone brand new to development is going to be able to get a job unreasonable? Well, does it matter what someone’s opinion about that is? You either want the job - or you don’t. And you need to know how to do the job, or no one will hire you. Do you need to know everything on this huge list to get an entry level position https://roadmap.sh/javascript ? (no) (in fact - close that - and don’t ever look at it again)
When I started (at the age of ~30) (in ~2011), you needed to know HTML, CSS, (Probably some PhotoShop to get your assets), maybe a little PHP (and likely HTTP and more about URLs and request types and forms), FTP and DNS to get your site hosted, and maybe some JavaScript. You might have used jQuery to help out or Knockout.js. And you had to know how to hook up a database and MySQL and probably a CMS or some sort. And maybe your code was a mess or maybe it adhered to some common patterns. But that was life. Not everyone needed to know all those things. Some people would focus more on getting the mockup into the HTML and CSS. Other people might focus on the server and the PHP or Perl or Java. There were all sorts of jobs and some of them were done by people with a formal education in Computer Science studies and other people just figured it out as needed. There was a lot of work to be done. Lots of custom stuff to build and maintain. And it was just normal to learn more incrementally as the years went by. You could totally get a job knowing just HTML and CSS (and you still can BTW). There was still an infinite amount of things you could know. But it seemed to ramp up naturally because we were closer to the grain of The Web.
So, what do people learn now? (Generally) They rush through some HTML and CSS really quick (which actually teaches them more bad habits than good). They rarely learn about DNS or FTP because a tutorial showed them how to type a few random things into a terminal to have their site on a free service and they don’t buy a domain name because there’s a free subdomain. Apparently paying for anything is for suckers and companies that don't give you things for free are evil capitalistic pigs who should be shut down. New devs don’t know much about servers because their text editor is actually running an advanced web application behind the scenes that starts a virtual server and runs all sorts of other things they don’t understand outside of that context - like connecting to version control, opening a terminal pane, SSH, code completion and typeahead, autoimport completion, AI suggestions and other additional layers like typescript and many other linters to tell them where all their errors are. If they couldn't use VSCode - they might be dead in the water. It can feel like you’re just a bag of meat being yelled at by VSCode as you try and solve the errors and remove all the red lines. And we do all of these - to put the training wheels in place.
And I’m not saying that a LAMP stack doesn’t have it’s own level of black-box and mysteries with how Apache handles your HTTP requests and MySQL starts up it’s own server - but we have to be comfortable with some level of abstraction or we’d be writing all ones and zeros at the machine code level.
So, the new developer is manning this huge stack of tools unknowingly, but they do get a lot of benefits. We can spin up a pretty complex web application with a front-end to make requests, a server to talk to a database and other third-party systems and respond back to the client/front-end, and an auth layer to make sure people are properly signing in and only seeing what they need to see. There are abstractions for HTML and CSS and JS that put that template logic and controller logic into a neat little component file (which is great) and that component file is properly registered based on file name conventions and everything gets set up in this larger system of conventions that all happen behind the scenes in the framework architecture. So, as a new developer - you can really ride the framework and know hardly anything about how it works - as long as you know the language to speak to this layer of the abstraction (the API).
These aren't just arbitrary add-ons that people made to complicate things. They solve real-world problems. The new dev won't really understand what they are - but I'm not saying we should just get rid of them. They allow us to move faster and to build interfaces and business logic without having to write tons of behind the scenes repeated structural code by hand. And with those training wheels, we have more time on our hands. We can also add in the chance to further define our programs with safety measures and plan automated testing routines, and built-in documentation of our code base. We can keep adding layers and layers or pull in more and more third-party tools. It’s pretty amazing. But what people end up learning is how to maintain that configuration - and there’s only so much time - and so, they end up learning 10% of all the things you used to need/want to know. And some jobs have a path for that. But there's likely going to be a long-term cost for you.
Arguably - it doesn’t matter how much “code” you know - and making things is what matters. And that’s true. That’s what matters to the business that pays you. And to the school that wants you to feel good about your progress. But I think you should protect your learning journey. It’s for you. It’s going to be what you carry on throughout the years and it’s a seed.
Getting proficient with a popular tech stack - when the market is booming proved to be a great decision for boot camps and their students. And I'd bet that the majority of people mean well.
But when it's not booming, students are in it for the wrong reasons, schools have tightened up and moved online, the market has plenty of devs who already have 5+ years working with that framework/stack -- then all of the sudden - the surface-level fake-it-till-you-make-it path (as much as I respect that) doesn't work as well. You're going to have to put in some more energy.
When it's obvious that you can't build an HTML page with semantic markup, that's accessible, and has a universally pleasurable experience, and you can't write CSS without a UI framework or do anything custom, it's obvious. You should be aware of that gap. When you've never owned a domain name or setup a deployment pipeline, you should be aware of that gap. When your personal website looks like your boot camp gave it to you, you should be aware of how that looks. When you can't take a server-side scripting language like Python or Go or PHP and build out a little personal website framework - you should be aware of that gap. When you can't plan a project and don't have experience with diagrams and explaining things, you need to be aware of that gap. When you've never written about your process or created any case-studies to explain your projects, you should be aware of that gap. When you're only proof of work is the class assignments, you should be aware of that gap. When your github history goes dead after the last day of class, you should be aware that we'll see that. When you claim to no nothing about visual design and that's for someone else on the team - you should be aware of that gap. If you refuse to turn on your camera and just want to be left alone, you should be aware of that huge gap. If you can't build a little prototype app without React, they you probably don't JavaScript, and you should be aware of that gap. And there will ALWAYS be a gap. There's always more to learn. So - it's an important skill to know what to learn and why - and when. You can't learn everything. And if you're having a hard time finding work right now, then get clear on your goal. Stop applying for general "Software engineer" jobs you aren't ready for. Narrow your scope. Figure out a job that you think you can do confidently. Get clear on how big your gap is and what you need to learn to get centered and confident with your toolset. Ideally, it's fun. Try and ignore all the doom and gloom and focus on your own personal goal.
It's not just the market. Too many people are applying for jobs they aren't anywhere near qualified to do. And it probably doesn't feel good. But luckily - you can learn the things and get back on track.
