2024.05.29 05:16 Environmental_Bee255 Questions From an Incoming Freshman

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming freshman (F17). I applied undecided into the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I have a few questions about Villanova. If anyone can answer even one of them it would be a huge help. Reddit seems to be the best forum regarding Nova I can find.
  1. CLAS: I know CLAS is gets a bit of a bad rep compared to the business school, engineering school, and nursing school. How significantly does a student feel that on campus?
  2. ASL: I want to take American Sign Language for my language requirement. I’ve taken Spanish from elementary school to junior year, and it’s always been my worst subject. I can’t take another year of it. Has anyone here taken the ASL course? How was the professor? How difficult is it? If I end up hating it- what is a language you recommend?
  3. Professors: Please give me any / all teacher recommendations - who to stay away from , who will give me an easy grade , who makes their class borderline impossible with workload and grading , etc.
  4. Mathematics requirement: I didn’t take any AP/IB classes (my high school doesn’t offer them) but I did take Calculus in my senior year and got a 98.78 in the class (I dropped from AB Calculus and am pretty good at Math). If you are in CLAS - what math did you take? I don’t really understand what some of the options are (discrete math for the social sciences, Mathematics of Fairness, Calculus 1 for Liberal Arts, Calculus 2 for Liberal Arts, Regular Calculus 1, Regular Calculus 2, Logic something or another). First of all if anyone could give me any insights on any of these that would be amazing. Secondly, what is the difference between Calculus for Liberal Arts versus just the normal Calculus? Also, is it worth it to try Calculus 2 even though I didn’t take the AP? Does it matter at all? If I decide to transfer out of Villanova will other colleges care if I take what sounds like bs math courses? What teachers should I try to get for any of these courses?
  5. Housing: I didn’t apply for Communitas, but I was reading a lot of posts and comments here that said you want to be in the South Campus as a freshmen. I’m also not in the honors program. Which are the best buildings for a freshman. I had to rank my choices in the Housing application and said Good Counsel, St. Katharine, St. Monica’s (I think). But I really didn’t have any information and am kind of scared. Any insights?
  6. Social Scene: I’m definitely not going to join a sorority. I’ve seen posts here from like the 2000s that say if you are a girl you won’t have trouble getting into parties. Is that still applicable? Also where do people get alc? I have a fake (or should in abt 2 weeks). Are there any go-to bars or convenience stores to bring drinks back to dorms.
  7. Advice: Any specific tips/recs for succeeding at Nova besides the generic make relationships with your teachers, go to office hours, study, read the syllabus, etc.?

2024.05.29 04:55 patchwork I imported board games into the UK, how do I file VAT?

Hey all! I'm a board game designer in the US who does not understand VAT apparently.... part of our freight went to a UK fulfillment center to send out to international customers. At the time I filed for VAT and got an EORI but (ominously) did not set up PVA which would have allowed me to avoid paying VAT (only to be repaid later.... ?? what is this all about). To say I'm lost is putting it mildly - I think it may actually be a simple thing I need to do (file a VAT return with HMRC? who has been sending me threatening letters), that said not entirely sure where to start.
Anyone have advice or recommendations for someone to talk to about this? I hired an accountant and a bookkeeper but they are both as baffled as I am.... I think I need to find the right person but not sure where to begin there either? I did some searches.... aaaaaand not even sure what I'm searching for.
I design board games so maybe I'll make a game of all this later.... not sure it would be very fun though. Time will tell.
Any insight appreciated! Thanks all.

2024.05.29 04:37 Spooneater69 AITAH For saying a girl won a speech competition out of pity?

Ok so, I am in the eigth grade and our school does a mini eighth grade “graduation ceremony” for our transition into highschool. Part of this event is three people from eighth grade giving a speech to the student body and parents. I decided to submit my speech and I believe that I did impeccable in my audition, I was able to look up and give eye contact, was able to be breviloquent when reading, and my voice projected enough even without the mic.
After delivering the speech to my homeroom class and the judges I sat down and listened to the next speech. The next speech was by a girl who was infact, dyslexic. She was unable to look up at the crowd and even had to be REMINDED to pause during periods. It was to my utter disgust and trepidation that the dyslexic girl was chosen to deliver the speech.
I just was at a complete loss I what I could’ve possibly did wrong, I had more achievements such as volunteering at a nursing home, being head of student council, being in the gifted program, having the highest MAP testing score, and being chosen to write letters thanking a foundation for donating to my school. Besides I am far better at reading and writing than anybody in our school, even my homeroom teacher said that I am to the entire class!
So I was rather upset by being beaten by someone with a disability and turned to my friend to tell her I believed that this girl was chosen “Out of pity because shes disabled” and one of the teachers ended up pulling me aside to tell me how rude and disrespectful it was that I said that, and said they needed to pick someone who has a harder time to “be inclusive”. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t include someone who can read properly, I mean I know way more about literature than she does! She couldn’t name a classic that wasn’t taught in school, like when I attempted to speak to her about the novel Catch-22.

Essays
I think I spent about a month on my essay, but I can't remember. I felt like my essay was pretty good, but I thought it might be controversial depending on the reader so I was a little nervous. I'm not that good of a writer, but I think the content made up for it. I basically talked about my experience growing up mixed race and how I won't let race define me. I thought it might be problematic because I said a black girl was being racist to me by mentioning how a black girl once told me I only got straight A's because I was "white" and that I realized that some people use race as an excuse for their failures. I said that I thought it was sad she was raised to think that way and ended by saying I wouldn't let my race dictate what I should like or how I should behave and that I would decide for myself rather than following others.

Let me just start by saying that I'm extremely grateful for how things have worked out for me. I feel so lucky and fortunate to be in the situation I am. I know I had my GPA and low income going for me, but I got so much more than I ever expected and I still can't believe this is actually happening!! QuestBridge didn't work out, but I still ended up getting what I was looking for: a way to go to college without taking out loans.
So to explain me being able to "go to Virginia Tech for Free," I have multiple sources that are paying for my first year; I didn't just get a full ride from VT (although it basically is when combined with everything else). I got about $15,500 in govt. grants, the scholarship from VT to cover the rest of tuition and room and board which is about $17,000 this year, and $12,000 in outside scholarships. And that's way over the COA, so I don't have to worry about paying anything!! Now I can follow my dreams of being an animator at my dream school without worrying about how to pay for it!!!

2024.05.29 04:28 lunathegoo Can reflux be the only sign of CMPA?

My almost 6 month old has been dealing with reflux since about 4 weeks. It’s caused nursing aversions and a lot of crying and fussiness. He’s been on famotidine since 5 or 6 weeks and that’s helped a lot. We thought the reflux was caused by his torticollis so he’s been in PT since 6 weeks to get more more range of motion and help with that, and he had a tongue tie that we clipped at 3 months. Neither of these have completely resolved the reflux. We supplement with formula and enfamil gentlease was helping but it still was not going away. At about 3.5 months we tried alimentum but it gave him mucusy poops so we switched back to the other formula (weirdly any similac brand we’ve tried has done that). So in the last week we switched to the soy enfamil formula and I cut out dairy, I already don’t eat gluten. His only persistent symptom is reflux, no eczema or mucus or blood in stools. He seems to be eating a lot more since we switched from gentlease to the soy formula and maybe the reflux is better but not sure if I am imagining it. Anyone else experience this? How long should I keep dairy out of my diet? Or should I go to nutramigen? My first born had CMPA with mucus stools and eczema and that helped with also me cutting dairy but none of the medical professionals we saw recommended I cut dairy. Thanks for reading my rambling.

2024.05.29 04:01 exoticsag Injured at work

So, long story short. A table and chairs set in lawn and garden fell off the top shelf and crushed my chest and left shoulder. I have a contusion on my chest wall, a separated shoulder, along with many other strains. I immediately reported it to my TL, who then contacted the only coach on duty at the time to file the incident report. The coach didn’t know much at all about how to complete the form or about policy regarding these type of situations. I spoke with the triage nurse who recommended I go to the hospital (the occupational medicine doctor approved by Walmart works out of an urgent care that was already closed for the day). Went to the hospital, still on the clock, BY MYSELF. Fast forward to the next day, I went to the urgent care. The doctor had me out of work till 6/3, I go into the store to give my people lead the paperwork and my AP coach looked at it and said “this isn’t going to work”, called the doctor, demanded he change the date to the 30th. He agreed although on the new form he said I couldn’t walk, stand, type, etc. My AP coach asked the doctor “what does answering a phone have to do with a chest and shoulder injury?” this isn’t the first time she’s displayed this type of unhinged crackhead behavior. She also said I wouldn’t be paid for going to the urgent care because I was already paid for going to the ER. My question(s) is, isn’t it Walmart policy that a salaried member of management take me to get medical care? Aren’t we supposed to be paid for all doctoER visits? Is she allowed to contact the doctor and demand he change the return to work date? Something is off with this situation. If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know.

2024.05.29 03:58 Straight_Armadillo32 Rant

I joined a lab a couple of years ago because I fell in love with research in my undergrad and decided to pursue a PhD and wanted to get experience as a lab tech. I loved working in this lab working upwards of 50-60 hours a week pushing all the projects I have been overlooking or helping with. I did not realize, at that point, that I was doing much more than what a normal technician is meant to do, but I also did not mind as this was a helpful preparation for PhD applications. My PI is strict, very tense, but fair. She is not the positive feedback type of mentor rather the type that simply gives criticism when something is wrong and says nothing when youre doing good work. Still, I managed to have a good relationship with her and decided to move across continents with her lab to help finish a project and help facilitate the set up of her lab. I knew no one in this new country but it was still an exciting prospect for me. After I had finished the project I moved for, my grandmother fell extremely ill and I had decided to leave the lab after being there for 3 years and helping complete a handful of projects including a big one that had been submitted, to spend any time left with my grandmother. After explaining to my PI my reasoning and plans to leave she began to treat me very badly, often sending me passive aggressive or openly aggressive emails to me, dry conversations, inhibiting any ideas for new experiments, and disallowing me to present at any conferences or local symposiums I was interested in. This sudden treatment made me doubt myself and my commitment as a scientist. I feel sad because I did not intend or want to burn this bridge, but will gladly do so for my grandmother. After all I had sacrificed for the lab and the PI I feel really betrayed and depressed. In addition to the fact that I lost a potential letter of recommendation or rather gained a letter of dis-recommendation whenever I choose to apply for a PhD. I am not sure what I can do at this point, yes I have brought this up to her and she simply brushed it off. It weirdly enough feels like a breakup that is simply bitter.

2024.05.29 03:57 Glittering_Sea9679 Neck/Back Pain - advise please

Hello all,
I (24M) have been having mainly lower back and neck pain for at least 5 years but occasionally upper back pain too. I just had a back MRI (added photo). The report pointed out a few things regarding L4/L5 and S1 but apparently, it's completely normal for my age and won't be the cause for my back pain. My mum has similar back pain and similar MRI results but she believes that is nurses back from having to lift patients back a lot when she was younger.
I have been told that the headaches will be due to neck pain but no solution on how to fix it.
The musculoskeletal specialist I have seen a couple of times has said I should avoid physio, chiropractors, osteopaths, massage therapists, and pretty much anyone else who works in health as there is no solution other than exercising....and dealing with it
Before I had seen a specialist I had tried:
I may have missed a few things on the list but would be keen for any other suggestions that have worked for others.
Ideally, if I fix the neck/back pain the headaches will stop also.
Do you think it's worth getting referred to a different musculoskeletal specialist to see if they think differently (they might just agree with the first Doctor)?

Thanks so much!

Category - Engineering
Degree - Bachelor's Software Systems Engineering
Lawyers prepared a 20 page package ahead of time with offer letter, recommendation, company information, and a copy of my diploma and transcript. I also brought my passport, original diploma, and printed out "official" transcript from mycreds.ca.
Had no appointment (phoned ahead and was told they do not do appointments). I showed up at 2:30pm and waited in line for 20 minutes as there were only 1-2 agents working the front and ~10 people in various lines.
I was immediately handed a piece of paper and asked to list out my job duties. I thought it was paperwork so suggested I merely copy from the package but he sternly said, "you should know what you are going to be doing."
I filled out a few sentences of how I would describe the work; basic bullet points from a job posting. Tried to ask how in detail I should go but he offered no help.
He then asked me to explain what the company does and what I will be doing on the job. I did my best explaining blockchain, databases, and web APIs. He said nothing but checked some boxes on a checklist.
After sitting for awhile he called me up to ask where I would be working and living - the head office is in New York but I will be living in California. He asked for their office address in California but I said I'm not sure they have one. He laughed a bit saying, "you're going to California but you don't know where you're going to live or work."
After 20 minutes of standing in silence he took me over to pay and I saw the "approved" stamp. Another 20 minutes of waiting for him to finish on his computer and I was on my way.

2024.05.29 03:45 ouchmecatbitmefoot 27M Australian looking for long term penpal/friend

Hey people!
I'm 27M, live with my girlfriend and cats. I'm looking to make some new connections and hopefully find a long term friend or two along the way. Email would probably be best unless you're a fellow Australian but happy to send letters in the mail if that works logistically!
I love reading, all types of music, baseball, a bit of writing and gaming and recently started drawing (I am not very good). I've been getting into learning about the weather and space recently as well. Watch a lot of TV, all sorts of shows/movies and WWE occasionally.
I've battled a great deal of depression and anxiety the last several years and slowly been rebuilding myself again. I've only rediscovered my love for reading this year so I'd love to chat with someone who has a heap of great book recommendations, any genre is great.
Other than that, I don't mind where you live, your gender or what interests you have. Would love to hear all about what your passionate about and the interests & hobbies you enjoy. I'm autistic and bi so LGBTQ+ friendly.
Feel free to leave a comment to send me a message!

2024.05.29 03:35 Groundbreaking_Pin57 Is it worth applying to the MCIT program as a recent MA graduate? Am I a good candidate?

Hey guys,
I'm considering applying to UPenn's MCIT program and wanted to get some opinions on whether I have a shot at getting in. I just graduated with an MA in Hispanic Linguistics from a well-known state university, where I also worked as an instructor of Spanish and Portuguese. In the fall, I'm supposed to start working as a lecturer of Spanish and linguistics at a small teaching college. While working on my thesis, I did a lot of stats and programming in R and fell in love with it, even though I've always been a non-STEM person. Around the same time I met a guy who had jumped ship from Linguistics after realizing how bad the job market is in academia and became a NLP Data Scientist which got me even more interested in studying CompSci (or something adjacent). I'm currently taking intro courses in Python and Java through a community college and loving it, and was also planning to take Data Structures and Algorithms next semester.
The only problem is that my math background is basically non-existent (I nearly failed calculus I as a freshman and only learned stats on my own during grad school). I had a 3.9 GPA in grad school and have a couple of conference presentations. I also have strong letters of recommendation from two department heads (one who is a pretty well known researcher, at least in linguistics). I'm really worried that my lack of math background might hold me back, though. Do you think my other qualifications can make up for it? Would it be a better idea to try to cram in some calculus/linear algebra classes before even considering applying?
Thanks!

2024.05.29 03:19 Drakeskywing SPF only verified the email addresses, not the sender info name right?

Question
SPF doesn't protect against spoofing the sender info (the component of the "from" field in an email ( abc123@xyz789.com)), it is to identify if you are allowed to use a particular domain, right?
Note: As I understand DMARC is the actual mechanism that uses the results of the SPF in letting the email through or not.
Context/Background
Recently the company I've worked at has gotten several emails from people spoofing their identity as other staff, there was nothing unusual about the incident concerning how it was carried out, the emails weren't from our domain but had the sender info set to a staff member's name (so think "Bob Smith abcd1234@xyz987.com"), while the email address looked to be a random array of letters and numbers from a legitimate domain (haven't checked the headers yet).
I had set up the DMARC records for the company a few months ago, prompted by a grey hat that sent an email warning us of a bad configuration and due to being open to learning stuff was given the task to fix it up (Software Dev that's been roped into everything due to a bad case of not keeping my mouth shut and being overly keen to learn stuff), and have been kept in the loop of this because of that.
Here is where my question comes in, our external IT company is recommending tools like SendMarc, along with changes to our DMARC setup (I hadn't set quarantine or reject due to up the chain being concerned it'll break things relying on the bad configuration and they would get back to me) to stop these issues.
I did reading to understand what I was doing when I updated our DMARC records since we were provided with a guide from the grey hat, but I was not going to trust what some random suggested we do without knowing exactly what I was doing.

2024.05.29 03:04 crunchykale1 2024-2025 Advice for the NCM

2023-2024 NCM Cycle Deadlines (Dates for this cycle may vary slightly)
👏 ADVICE: Start researching QB schools early! Consider factors like weather, Greek life, diversity, student body number, distance from home, and more. Remember, if you get matched, you must attend that school, so rank schools you genuinely want to attend for four years. However, be sure not to glamorize specific schools! Looking too narrowly will limit your chances to match at a school you might’ve loved if you remained a bit more open-minded. Also, don’t feel guilty if you have 1 school or 12 schools on your match list. Everyone’s NCM process will look different. If a free education is the goal, then try to maximize your chances by applying to many, lesser competitive schools. If you have a dream school you want to match at, then don’t be afraid to stay open to RD.
👏 ADVICE: The writing process is going to be EXTREMELY tedious. There will be times where you’re sitting at a blank document, waiting for an idea to suddenly hit you. Take it one step at a time! Make the process enjoyable and let your authentic personality come through. Consider using College Essay Guy's resources or pair up with a college mentor through Matriculate. Another important task you should get out of the way early is your letter of recommendations. Look for brag sheets online and give them to your teachers to help them write a strong letter.
👏 ADVICE: This paper requires your signature, your parent/guardian’s signature, and your counselor’s signature. If your counselor is busy, please reach out to them early so you can get this done! If you don't manage to get it done on time, then don't worry. Questbridge tends to be lenient with deadlines. But this, of course, isn't ideal. Don't add more stress to the process!
👏 ADVICE: Congratulations if you’re a finalist! If you weren’t selected, consider applying to schools through the Common App and through Questbridge Regular Decision. Notice how there’s about two weeks to write all of your supplements. Try to prevent this time crunch by preparing in advance. Check out this document for the supplementals of the past years! You can also look at your college’s website to see if they posted their supplementals in advance (this usually happens in the summer). Make sure to only look at the school’s supplemental essays for Questbridge people. Colleges will usually require NCM applicants to write less because the initial NCM application has a lot of writing already.
👏 ADVICE: Don’t wait until the last minute to do your financials (FAFSA and CSS Profile). There have been countless web maintenance delays for FAFSA this year, so try to do it as soon as possible. The FAFSA should open on October 1, 2024, and you will be using 2023 tax forms to fill out the information. Additionally, you will be filing for the 2025-2026 FAFSA Form because that’ll be when you’re in college. You and your parents will need to create individual accounts too. You will fill out the FAFSA for yourself even if you do or don’t file taxes, and your parents/guardians will file their own taxes (or you can do it for them). It will take a while for FAFSA information to be sent to schools, so don’t delay! The CSS Profile is a more thorough version of FAFSA. There’s also an extension of the CSS Profile called IDOC which is a website where you will upload your tax forms in the form of images. The CSS Profile and IDOC will take time to send your documents as well, so be sure to get it done early. 👏 ADVICE pt. 2: It's going to be hard to take your mind off of December 1, but try to fill up your schedule with the things and people you love! Avoid burning out by practicing healthy habits such as exercising, sleeping 8 hours a day, meditating, journaling, etc.
👏 ADVICE: You’ve made it through the process! Whether or not you matched, be proud of your hard work. It’s easy to tie your self-worth to QB and college admissions, but remember that your value isn’t defined by this. If you qualified for QB but didn't match, you’ll likely qualify for amazing aid or a full ride outside of the NCM. Consider using QB Regular Decision and/or the Common App to apply to more colleges you love. You’ll find success regardless of where you go, create great memories, and meet amazing people. Stay positive and keep persevering like you always have!
Post inspired by SpiralKim72's advice for the 23-24 cycle (Check out their profile! They clarify many aspects of the QB process and give great advice from interviews to the RD process).

2024.05.29 02:50 Fit_Calligrapher2394 Nursing school scrub uniforms…

So I’m doing an ABSN program and I’m the type of person that is pretty impulsive and wanted to get a head start of obtaining what was required of our program. ie: uniforms, lab kit, instruments, mandatories, books- you get the idea.
The Dean of Nursing had sent out quite a bit of PDFs containing a buttload of overwhelming information so I thought I was doing myself a favor buying my uniform x2 sets of scrub pants and scrub tops (from our partnered uniform website that was provided to us) and scrub jacket…
Just to find out when I picked it up 2 weeks later when it became available they notified me that it was ready to be picked up and that I could try them on before I leave. So I did so and was shocked that the scrub top to my demise did NOT fit entirely right … my chest is only slightly bigger than average (I’m female 24) an my torso is long and I have shorter limbs so it fit slightly short especially since it was compressing my chest but was loose around my waist and stomach area.
I’m normally a medium-large varying on the brand of tops in general but I decided to size UP at least one size to an XL because on the model it looked quite loose and comfortable and figured if I wanted it to fit the same on myself it needed to be slightly bigger… but nope, I thought I was playing it safe since I even measured my chest and everything. And compared my measurements within the measuring chart for the specific brand of scrub top we need/are required to have. I was even wearing a compression sports bra 😭
I asked the lady at the store if I could size up but then she said it cost more to size up to 2x-3X and I’m like 😭😭 wtffffff I’m not even a 2x or 3X but it’s INSANE how the XL scrub tops I got don’t even fit like XL it fits like a SMALL most literally. I wear medium and large tops and have tried on my mom’s MEDIUM scrub tops and those fit perfectly with room!
Just wanted to rant. I know it’s not that big of a deal but I felt like o was going crazy trying on my scrub tops and they were more fitted than expected even with going 1-2 sizes BIGGER. 😞
Does anyone have a favorite brand of scrubs tops they recommend for women with slightly larger than average chest size? And have long torsos, that are comfy and not so restrictive and close to their TRUE sizes?

2024.05.29 02:37 Extension_Nothing552 Accutane shaming

Hi all,
I am starting accutane next month & I’m excited! I know it’s going to be hard but I’m ready & honestly reading these posts have been super inspiring. My mom was upset when I told her initially because to her “accutane is bad”, but when I asked her what’s bad about it or where she heard this she didn’t have a good answer. I’ve realized just how much misinformation there is about accutane & fear mongering. I told some friends @ school about the prospect & they were sorta dissing me & saying how bad it was etc. I’ve made up my mind, done the research, & have had all my questions answered by my derm, but did anyone else experience this sort of “shaming”? I don’t really understand why. I am in nursing school & we are on summer break so I’ll have sometime before I see my friends again but I’m wondering if I even tell them? I feel like maybe the dry lips etc could give it away but should I really care this much?
Side note, any tips for wearing a mask while in the hospital (clinical days for nursing school) that anyone would recommend? Will this aggrevate areas of my skin more when I purge?
I also have issues with hair & getting bad ingrowns so have been waxing for almost 3 years now & was wondering some tips if anyone else has been in the same boat with no waxing & what they did to prevent ingrowns.
I also just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted encouragement or photos. It’s really inspiring to see & I know that couldn’t have been easy.

2024.05.29 02:29 Willing-Highway-6237 Urgent: Concerns about Lead Exposure and Popcorn Material at La Vista Apartments

Greetings to All,
I come to you with a pressing matter regarding potential lead exposure, as well as concerns about popcorn material, particularly at La Vista Apartments located at 740 S Western Ave, Santa Maria, CA 93458. The recent health issues faced by my brother-in-law's 1-year and 3-month-old baby have raised serious concerns about the safety of his living environment. Lab work has confirmed the initial test results, indicating exposure and abnormal lead levels for a child of his age. Additionally, he received a letter from the Department of Public Health suggesting further venous tests to manage his case. However, the process involves signing a contract that he doesn't fully understand. I've told him that a contract is often a paper of lies, a (CON-TRACT). What do you all think of this as well?
La Vista Apartments consisting of thousands of units spread across four blocks, presents a significant challenge due to the age of the buildings. The likelihood of lead presence, especially in water and old paint, cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, all units at La Vista Apartments also have popcorn material, which should not be used anymore due to the verifiable link it has to causing cancer and respiratory issues due to the asbestos present in it.
The presence of popcorn material in the units raises additional concerns about the overall safety and health risks faced by the residents. Asbestos, commonly found in popcorn ceilings, poses serious health hazards when disturbed or degraded, releasing harmful fibers into the air. These fibers, when inhaled, can lead to various respiratory issues and even cancer over time. Given the age of the buildings at La Vista Apartments, it's imperative that management takes immediate action to address this issue and ensure the safety of all residents.
Despite my brother-in-law's proactive approach in conveying these concerns to the management, the response has been less than satisfactory. Instead of addressing his requests for safety measures like installing a reverse osmosis system and removing potentially lead-containing paint, they've opted to conduct a unit inspection. This sudden inspection, seemingly scheduled prior to addressing residents' concerns, has raised red flags. It appears as though they might be attempting to preemptively deflect responsibility or undermine the credibility of those raising valid concerns.
Such tactics have left my brother-in-law feeling suspicious and apprehensive about the management's intentions. With the inspection slated for the following Friday, time is of the essence, and we're urgently seeking advice and insights from the community on how best to navigate this complex situation. Your input and experiences could prove invaluable in helping us formulate a strategic approach to address these concerns effectively. We're open to any suggestions or guidance you may have, whether it's legal recourse, advocacy resources, or simply how to engage with the management in a constructive manner.
Also, I must mention Greystar, the property management company overseeing La Vista Apartments, holds a significant responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. As one of the largest property management companies globally, Greystar has a duty to prioritize the health and safety of its tenants. However, the response from Greystar regarding the concerns raised about potential lead exposure and the presence of popcorn material has been lacking. Despite being made aware of these issues, their actions have been limited to conducting unit inspections rather than implementing proactive measures to address the root causes. This highlights the importance of holding property management companies like Greystar accountable for their role in maintaining safe living environments for all residents.
Together, we can work towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents at La Vista Apartments, 740 S Western Ave, Santa Maria, CA 93458. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and recommendations.
Best regards,
Angel Rios

Seasonal Allergies Immunotherapy
Hi I’m planning on applying for OCS when I graduate in May. But im currently taking allergy shots for my seasonal allergies. I would have no problem pausing them during basic etc. Resuming when I’m past training, but is this something I have to do? Is it worth having to get a medical waiver for it? Do I need to tell my recruiter?

Currently in the process of reenlisting as a prior service who was chaptered out in AIT for SI. Submitted and turned over all my paperwork to my recruiter and awaiting MEPS. My recruiter said this is the longest part of the waiting game from his experience. How long should I be expecting to wait realistically? I would ask my recruiter but I feel like I've bothered him enough over the past few weeks lmao. - Thanks!

Weight loss
I'm currently 5% body fat over for the arms 2.0. I'm eating way better and consuming 12-1,500 calories and losing an average of 3,000 calories a day. I've been running/walking 2 miles a day of hill terrain. My recruiter said I need to lose 10 pounds by May 17. I need tips and tricks on how to lose those pounds by then

Army National Guard recruiter says at MEPS you can choose from several dates to start basic. Is that accurate?
If so, typically how many dates are there to choose from and how far in the future? I have a great civilian job, so would like to know my date as far in advance as possible.
Edit: would go on to traditional state OCS (yea, I know the internet’s opinions on it but it fits my life really well) afterwards.

I've got 4 years active and 3 years guard under my belt and I've always put in to my tsp to get the match. I know you need 8 years to keep the matching, but my unit has drained what little motivation I had left for the army, and I've decided I'm done. I'm curious if anyone can help me figure out if there's any option that will help me keep my tsp matching besides a 1 year extension. I doubt the IRR counts towards 8 years, and from what I understand, the inactive guard is simply a pause button. So instead of pushing me to 8 years, it's just delaying my 7th till next year or something. I'm also wondering if a future federal job would contribute to that 8 years or if it has to be all concurrent. Thank you for any help or any resources or links yall can send me to figure this out.

I was wondering if I could join the army with depression, anxiety, and OCD. All diagnosed. I have no suicide attempts or anything like that, no inpatient care either. All of these are somewhat mild and manageable, and I haven't been on any medication. But that was another concern of mine, if I was to get on any medication, would that disqualify me? Thanks a lot.

Im currently a senior in high school trying to enlist in the army since December but I’m at a loss of what to do. I took the asvab scored a 61 but autism came up on my records from when I was a kid. I had to get a full medical Record for meps then they wanted my pharmacy record and now they want some more records my recruiter made me sign a form for my old doctors to get it from them about a month and a week ago. I called him the earlier this week and he said he Kentucky or Kansas (I didn’t hear him well and forgot) doing some training I honestly just don’t know what to do I’ll graduate from high school in a few weeks and I probably have a month after that before my parents kick me out any advice?

Hey all, I wanted to get some insight on whether you all think I would be able to enlist with Crohn's. I've seen online that it's generally marked as an "unwaivable medical condition" but sometimes goes on a case by case basis. My IBD is very mild, I honestly forget that I even have the damn disease because it doesnt effect my daily life at all. I have it managed by taking an 8-week biologic but have gone on extended breaks from it before due to insurance reasons (roughly 2-3 months without any meds) and had no flare ups or any issues of the sort. However, my doctor is thinking of switching me to a daily pill (Rinvoq). I don't have any food sensitivities like a lot of Crohn's patients have (caffeine, alcohol, dairy, etc.) and have never had any surgeries nor does my GI doctor think i'll ever need one. I wanted to enlist for a 17C contract as im already in college for tech anyhow, I'm not sure if that would effect my standing. However, dream MOS is 18X but I figure that may be tougher to get by a recruiter. Any advice or thoughts? Army has been my dream forever and I don't want to have to give it up, so I'd really do anything haha.

I have read a few horror stories where someone enlisted with X,Y, or Z in their contract, but after basic they where told something else and could not confirm the original. For example, someone claims they had a specific location through Option 19, only to later be told they are going somewhere else.
My first question is: has this happened to anyone here, and if so and how was it resolved?
My second question is: after signing your contract, how do you gain acess to it later? Do you receive a physical copy for yourself? Can you download a copy? Is there someone you can ask in the Army to retrieve it for you? Will it be acessable on a portal of somekind?
I am considering enlisting with option 19 and the location is very important to me. Thank you!

Is a bonus worth choosing the Army over the AF?
In general, I’ve heard that the army’s QoL is less than that of the Air Force. However, the army has way more jobs w bonuses that I’d be interested in. And it’s the same or similar jobs as the Air Force, but w a bonus. I know the Basic Training for army is also longer, but a bonus can be convincing. I have the same question, but in regards to joining the navy as well. I want to focus on my education during my enlistment & get my bachelors & id also like travel opportunities. I haven’t taken my ASVAB yet, it’s scheduled the 16th. I scored rlly well on the PiCAT, and according to those scores I qualify for some army jobs w a bonus. I know it’s not as simple as that, and it’s a whole process & based on what’s available. Just want some opinions on if I was offered an army job w a bonus as opposed to the same/ similar Air Force job without, would you consider it worth it based on your experience?
I already got some answers from a post I made about this, but moderator deleted it and said to comment here. But any additional info/ insight is greatly appreciated. I want to make the best choice for my future in the case that I don't want to do 20 years.

I'm joining up rn and working with a recruiter. We've got my waivers and everything. Pretty much just have to pick a job. For background I was an IET separation back in 2009. From what I've read and what me and my recruiter have gone over I am glossary non-prior service. I could have sworn I read (albeit a while ago) that business rules did not apply to GNPS, so I should be free to pick my MOS. However, I talked to my recruiter earlier today and he wants me to sit with his 1SG and go over the job options available for prior service. Am I wrong and I just get what I get?

I was feeling some numbness in my legs, but looking back at it, it was very cold outside and I was just a bitch who would try to get out of school by any means possible. They did a spinal tap and never found any trace of the disease however. I was in the hospital for a couple of days, the gave me immunoglobulin and then I went home and nothing ever came of it. I am currently completely asymptomatic This was when I was 12 or 13 years old. Now I’m 18 and want to join but my recruiter said I have to get all the records and stuff. What is the chance that I will still be able to join? I tried looking it up online but I couldn’t find an answer. Also if I’m able to join, will I need a medical waiver?

I think 11B because I don’t want to individuate and do army shit or 68W but I’m not sure if I can get advanced combative training or other schools I want. I want to do something that’s “high speed” and meaningful while working my way towards Ranger reg. Is the 82nd Airborne a good pathway to that? How is civil affairs? Can you enlist directly into it while being active duty?

Hi everyone! I’m a high school student planning on joining the military. I’m Muslim, so I want to be sure that whichever branch I join is accommodating to Muslim needs. If it changes anything, I’m planning joining through the ROTC route.
My main concerns are, does the Army give beard waivers for Muslims? Is it possible to take short breaks throughout the day to pray? Can you fast during Ramadan? Can you be provided with halal (no pork/no alcohol) food?
Also, I’m interested in infantry or armor (or any kind of ground forces officer in general). Would these accommodations interfere with being selected for these careers or being mission ready? (Such as a beard, fasting, etc.)

That being said, my recruiter then said that I should find a lease online and edit it to where I state that I'm paying the rent to my sister instead (who has a valid ID) He also stated that my sister and I have to go to a check-cashing place to get it notarized. Is this all ok to do and will the BHA be approved? Also if it's approved, does this mean that the rent we pay which is $1,365.50, is going to be paid for while I'm away and how exactly??

Questions about Virginia National Guard
I want to do OCS! Now here’s my confusion. My recruiter is saying that the moment I swear in is the moment my contract is going to start and will count towards that 6 year! So, if he is right, I will basically complete 2 years training if I do state OCS. But I would like to have more control on what branch I get! My top 3 are: cyber warfare, signal, and intel. Should I do accelerated in that case? Also how likely am I to get one of those aforementioned three if I do state OCS of 18 months? My bachelor was in Computer Engineering, and I am currently enrolled in ASU for master’s pursuing Computer Science! Will I get that 24k a year tuition fee because he said there’s a possibility I might get it since it’s fully online? Can I get tuition assistance and loan repayment both? Does getting either one incur additional service time?

So my husband is going to meps next week. he has 2 different sets of scars on his left arm. He works at a mobile home plant building houses. One was from when he got caught on a nail so it's a little deeper looking and another was from some sheet metal at work. He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them. He honestly forgot about telling his recruiter and his recruiter has already sent in all his medical history and got him scheduled for meps. Should he still go ahead and tell his recruiter or just wait and disclose it at meps?

I'm currently in process Enlisting in the Reserve, while holding an associate's degree in mechanical engineering technology, with some side education in programming. While I am working towards my bachelor's degree, I'm looking to pick an MOS that will help my career, or at the very least, be interesting. I don't remember my scores, but my Recruiter told me whatever I pick, my score won't be the limiting factor.
Top of the list for career jobs is 15 series, from what I've heard from currently enlisted in my friend group, wrenching on aircraft in general is a fast track to a cushy job on the outside with my education. 25 series looks boring but useful as anything IT/electrical complements my degree. On the more interesting side, I was looking at 91 series, either 91F or 91P.
Am I going anywhere wrong with any of these jobs? Anything I should be keeping in mind?

Hi all,
I am a permanent resident here is the US, and last week I finished my ASVAB mock test with a 95 on my AFQT. The recruiter says I am eligible for everything that doesn't require a security clearance which is kind of a problem as my dream MOS are the 35-series and 17-series (As both of these are locked behind clearance requirement)
After some thinking, I narrow down to the following, but there are still too many so I hope I can get your feedback on what I am doing. My aims are: a/I want something that will translate into the civilian world well if my time in the army doesn't go well, b/I want an MOS that can advanced through warrant or becoming a commission officer if my time in the army does go well, and c/I want to push myself to the limit and break out of my comfort zone to see where I can go. If I sound arrogant, please forgive for that: I am just trying to be as careful as possible. I am nearly reaching my thirty, and I want to take deliberate steps because I no longer have the luxury of youth and family to try and fail.
The MOS are:
11-series, 12B and 12D: I have a soft spot for these despite knowing they don't translate into the civilian world. But in my heart somewhere is a wild child that wants to test my physical prowess and wants to blow things up. I do know my knees and lower back will hate me for picking this.
15 series: With exceptions to 15C, 15J, and other works related to flying or being mechanics of sensitive equipment, I can be an aircraft technicians. I read that there are demands for airplane mechanics but I don't know much about this field other than a/I got to repair planes, b/people seem to hate it because you have to sign a long contract if you become a warrant.
68A: I did see this MOS getting recommended a lot but after reading its description, I am not very sure if I want to do it either both in the army or afterwards. I must also admit I don't have a good insights onto the day to day life of this job. Can someone shed some light about this MOS for me?
68C: Becoming a nurse seems like a very safe choice out of the military given that the BLS projects nurse to be in high demand and being able to take care of your family sounds like a big plus to me; however, I don't know if I like being a nurse. My parents were doctors, and having seen the hospital environment I can say I am not a fan. I also look into 68A but BLS prospect for it didn't seem good, and the training on 68E, 68D, and 68V look a little bit too short. Do you really become a dental assistant just with 10 weeks of training?
68W: I must admit, I have a soft spot for 68W as it allows me to be both learn some medical skills and be on the field. However, I do notice that 68W only translates to paramedic/EMT post-army, while 68C translates to becoming a nurse (which is more valued and regarded as "better" than paramedic or EMT and thus in higher demand)
88H, 92A, 92F, and 92Y: I pick these because, according to BLS, there is a projected increase need for people in warehousing and transportation. From my limited understanding of the fields, you will be in charge of handling logistics such as maintaining unit inventory, ordering supplies and weapons for your units, etc. but I am not very sure on the difference between, say, 92Y and 92A.
So, can you give me a suggestions? May anyone who has been in these MOS share their experience to help me pick? What are some of the MOS I miss?
Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,

How can i improve my chances of success after the military?
I'm going to meps in 2 weeks and im shooting for a 25 series mos. 25H was what was available at the recruiters after i took my practice asvab. I'm not the brightest bulb but, hey, I'll take it. Aside from college ,which i want to continue to pursue throughout my time in the army (or after depending on my mental fortitude once i'm actually in,) how can i set myself up for success in the civilian world? Any input from past 25h or 25 series who somehow translated their career into decent paying jobs will be much appreciated.
I'll add I'm only joining the army for the college benefits and free training as i come from a poor household and have no other feasible way to pay for it.

Hello everyone,
I was recently laid off from a $64k job, and honestly, I'm not too upset. I was already feeling burnt out and unhappy, staying primarily for the promised educational benefits to facilitate a career change, which obviously fell through with the job loss. Now, I'm considering my options and the military as a new path has been sounding appealing to an extent. The VA loan and GI Bill are particularly enticing because they would help me pursue a degree without getting into debt, and enabling the career change I've been considering. And the thought of being able to buy a house at this age/economy seems awesome.
At 28, I'm weighing the implications of joining now, especially considering the pay cut and spending four years AD without the guarantee of going overseas which for me would make it much more worthwhile. Also, I'd likely be one of the older members among younger peers, which is another factor to consider. My entry rank would be E3 due to my associate degree told by the Air force recruiter I met, but I'll need a moral waiver for a misdemeanor I had at 18, which might limit my job options not to mention she told me I would have to be at the disposal of whatever the Air Force wanted me to do? Which I am assuming means that I could enlist for one thing that they tell me nope get your doing this. The Air Force recruiter told me that I would be just fine and I would be able to get in as long as my ASVAB score is high enough.
I'm torn about whether to commit to AD and save myself or a longer term in the military via reserves but still stuck in the same loop of feeling in fulfilled, unable to afford university and in a place I would rather leave. Insights from anyone who joined the military later or faced similar decisions would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks for any advice!
P.S I am also ok with the idea of the military as a career as I would still be able to retire earlier than many of my peers if I pursue the 20 year route..

I’m reenlisting at the end of this month (was NG but going active). My husband is also active and I was wondering how likely is it that I can be in the same battalion as my husband? I know married couples aren’t supposed to work directly together but would that still be considered “working together”?

So I enlisted on Friday. (25H) and I ship to BT in August. I’ve made my mind up before enlisting that I was going to make a career out of it. So now I’m here before you all to ask… what’s some advice you could give someone looking to do 20. Like what’s steps would you take if you could go back to make the most of your Army career? I remember my dad who served in the navy would always say “choose your rate choose your fate” and I think I started off on the right foot. Any suggestions to help make the correct steps in my new career path?

Going back in. Needing some suggestions on different MOS.
So when I was in the first time I was a 25U. I was 16 when I swore in to secure my mos and left at 18YO. I’ve decicided to go back in. Im picking between 19 jobs, I qualify for all of them as I keep my old asvab scores. I scored over a 105 in everything so I have a pretty big list to pick from. These jobs have good jobs outside of the army and that’s my angle, I know 25U translates to a good job outside of the army but it’s not my cup of tea. So any info on the jobs in the army and civilian life for these mos would be greatly appreciate. The jobs are: 68L 68X (specifically because I want to help vets who are/have suffered) 88H 35F 25B 35M 35G 35L 88K 88N 88U 27D 31E 12M 15Q 15N 25U 88L 88M

Background: Greencard holder, 6yr+ experience in IT field. No degree. Married.
Always wanted to join the military and finally have the opportunity to do so.
What I want to experience from the military;
I want the opportunity to grow in the IT field and have military experience and later on attain a contractor job in overseas installations. Very interested in being able to move overseas for a few years specially Japan.
My biggest interest is to grow in my career + experience other countries.
Recruits have also told me that for active duty they are allowing first duty station to be chosen because the army apparently has a shortage of people joining so they want to motivate people to join by allowing them to choose duty stations. This has made me consider going active IF they aren't lying about this + the job security has always been a plus to me.
My primary plan was :
Going reserve, getting my citizenship while in basic training, changing my mos to 25B then finding government contracting job overseas preferably (Japan) and changing my unit to Japan to drill there (Camp Zama). Overall my biggest goal is to move overseas and be in the IT field.
What is the best route? Advice is greatly appreciated in advance:)

Does anyone have any experience with this job and how often slots show up?

Vision Waiver Acceptance Probability
So I’m wanting to enlist as an 11x OP 4in the army, went to MEPS a few weeks ago, and am currently waiting on a current injury to be waived. I’m just kind of worrying about my vision waiver. Recruiter said we have to wait for this to be cleared first, then we can launch the vision waiver.
What’s the probability that a vision waiver will be accepted with Visual Acuity of 20/30 20/50 corrected vision. I understand everything is case to case, I’m just kind of worrying that it’ll end up being denied.

I've reached out to ROTC recruiters in the colleges that I will be attending however, they never picked up their phones nor responded to their emails after multiple attempts. I've also scheduled appointments with them only for them to not show up multiple times. I've also called the army and they said they would have someone call me but they never did either. I was wondering if anyone could help me get in touch with an ROTC recruiter as I got a few questions about the Army ROTC as well as the process to proceed.

He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them.

How does one secure a religious exemption before basic training? My recruiter said we would talk about it down the line but it’s getting down to the wire and I’d rather it not get forgotten.

Hi All, I'm 23F graduating college with my bachelor's in international relations at the end of July. I speak intermediate Spanish and would be open to learning more languages. I am looking for a mos that doesn't restrict me to behind a desk or sitting on my ass all day. I was thinking of something intelligence related. I would appreciate any advice/help.

So i have hemorrhoids right now and I go to MEPS monday. I have a Drs visit from about 2 years ago where she prescribed me the cream to use. The cream says to only use it when you have hemorrhoids. I still have the cream. Will I pass MEPS if I bring that the Dr visit. or should I get a new one the day before? It's Saturday so my recruiter won't answer.

Already signed my contract but I really really wanna change my MOS by the time I ship out for BCT in mid-July, what would be the best way to approach and ask my recruiter to change my MOS? The one that I want is really in demand (19K) so maybe that might help?

Background: Greencard holder, 6yr+ experience in IT field. No degree. Married.
Always wanted to join the military and finally have the opportunity to do so.
What I want to experience from the military;

I'm going to MEPS this week and I was told that the Job I'm really interested in (12w) is rare and to not get my hopes up. I'll be doing research about some other jobs, but if I really want that job should I just wait for a slot to open up or go with alternate choices?

Is there a list of all the different Options in contracts? Like Option 40, Option 4, Option 19, etc?

In the process of renegotiating my contract before shipping out and I'm seriously considering 19K (M1 Armor Crewman). Recruiter told me that anyone can volunteer to go to airborne school at BCT and I really want to go airborne but it seems like 19Ks don't really do it as much as other MOS's. Is it true that i will have the opportunity to volunteer myself for airborne school at basic? If not, how can I attend Airborne or any other specialized school as a tanker?

Just reserved mos 88L Water craft engineer.
Was excited at first as I’ve e heard a lot of good things about this mos, but i have a wife, 6yr old and another on the way and am worried that i wont be home that often given this mos. Im supposed to go to meps in 4 days and swear in. Im really not trying to be away from my family all that often. Is this mos bad for family life? Have i made a mistake? Or should i keep it and roll with it. Any recommendations on what i should do?

Hello, I’m in ROTC right now but I’m about to go to CST. I have been looking into branches as much as possible and am pretty set on ADA but I wanted to ask if anyone here has been on a HIMAD or SHORAD deployment that can give me some insight on what it’s like, more specifically SHORAD but I do want to hear both sides.

Joining the army
hi, I am 17 turning 18F, and im joining the army and going to boot camp soon. What are some advice or anything you would tell someone before they go to boot camp or thinking about joining the army?

Hello, I'm currently a high school senior who is interested in joining the ROTC.
