2024.05.15 01:47 FKGSparrow What we do, to have extra fun

Me and 2 friends startet to play helldive difficutly recently. We used to play suicide dif. but over time went to helldive.
We are a bit silly playing the game, messing with each other. Usually we dont care about meta set ups, so we play every gun and every strategems.
We love to use mines to set up "safety zones", which is usually directly on an objective. So we always have to move through our own mine fields to finish objectives. Our main slogan is "mine fields give you safety, and if not you need more mines". That in turn makes objectives quiet interesting.
If it is not mines, we use our "friendship" strategems, which are 380 mm and 120 mm orbital stikes. Usually dropped directly onto a friend to "help him", when he is overrun by enemies.
So in my opinion, everyone that uses meta set ups only are missing out on alot of gameplay.

2024.05.14 22:17 TaintedPills Did You Know You Have Rights ?

OC
In the far future, mankind is surrounded by neighbours that rule over their citizens with an iron first and no regard for their happiness, either in the name of a select few families with noble blood, absolute monarchs or tyrants that claim to serve the interests of their nations while their actions suggest otherwise.
It is a sickening thought and certain individuals would not stand for this. Many species were flabbergasted when they learned so many humans were willing to meddle in the affairs of their neighbours, even more were shocked to learn that these endeavours were not funded by any human government for the sake of destabilising potential rivals.
It was a voluntary effort.
[----------------------------------------]
If Mesch could describe the current microcycle, she’d call it tiring, soul-crushing even, she had no choice but to overwork herself to pay off her debt to the state. After the brother of her father was falsely charged with high treason and shipped off, all of her immediate family-including her-was charged the appropriate price for being the acquaintance of a dissident. The dread residing in her heart only grew stronger as she made her way back to her meager apartment-dwelling, the thought of the massive debt and the cost of living only served to wear her mind down.
“Hello miss, did you know you have rights?” Mesch’s ears perked up at the sudden barrage of noise directed at her, turning to look at the source, she found a strange, seemingly furless biped looking at her. She exhaled from her snout, as if she didn’t have anything better to do…she had recently gotten off her twelfth consecutive overtime shift and the last thing the drowsy nersk needed was a speech about- “You actually do and since I’m here, I’m willing to tell you all about it” The biped was holding plenty of pamphlets in its first appendage and a clipboard in the second. Whatever it wanted to tell her must have been important enough to stand in the same spot for an indefinite amount of time, Mesch decided to humour the strange alien, stopping in her tracks and focusing exclusively on the being in front of her.
"Enlighten me then, what rights do I have?” She came to the conclusion that the alien ignored the sarcasm in her response, seeing that it was thick enough to pierce. She had nothing to her name besides the clothes on her person and what little she had in her apartment-dwelling. The alien handed her a pamphlet, why not? She had come this far, may as well go the whole way. It was written fluently in the language of her people and the information it divulged immediately drew her attention.
-The average Nerski adult works an average of ten human hours for six human days every human week with for the same criminally low wages. This is twenty nerski mini-cycles every twelve nerski micro-cycles every nerski mega-cycle. That is humiliating, grating and unacceptable. Besides being deprived of overtime rates, the average nerski adult is robbed of their sense of safety in their own dwelling, the nerski authorities need no one’s written permission to invade and sack someone’s dwelling for evidence of a crime, perceived or not. The average nerski citizen has no say in who governs them or the measures they may enact at any given moment. The average nersk is not free. But you can be, if you ask the nearest F.F.F advocate for more information. Freedom Forever Foundation-
Something just did not sit well with her about this, was she supposed to work less? Was she supposed to be paid more for the unskilled labour she provided? Was she being taken advantage of? The intrusive thoughts did not let her already weary mind rest, for she had a myriad of questions that urgently needed answering. “I…I want to know more” Mesch did not bother masking the tone of her voice, it sounded equally tired and pleading, desperate for answers to the questions that only kept appearing with each passing second.
The face of the alien brightened by a considerable amount, quickly withdrawing something from the bag on their back. In that span of seconds that felt like a lifetime she remembered the race the odd sentient in front of her belonged to, humans. Not new to FTL technology by any means, but still treated like children in many political-and social-circles thanks to being the newest addition to the Neutral Cooperation Concord. “Glad your rights concern you…this is the information kit, spread the word” A beige folder was handed to her, it was almost as thick as her arm, the scandalous information…the pull it had on her, it was hellish! The promise of relief almost made her knees buckle under the pressure of her need to know.
“One more thing…can I have your signature? I will sooner burn the page than let it fall in the hands of nerski authorities…you have my word” She didn’t need to be pressured to sign and she did so eagerly, carefully hiding the illicit materials within her clothes with shaky hands. ‘Thank-” The human did not get to thank her in time, noticing a single file line of nerski plain clothes enforcers closing in on them, picking up speed when he started backing away. “Unfortunately this is where we part ways…now go!” The last glimpse of the human she caught was him getting swarmed by the enforcers “Liberty fears no tyrant! FREEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!” Mesch’s attempts at leading the human away had failed, tears threatened to spill out of the corners of her eyes the longer she ran yet she had no other choice. If only she could see him again…
Almost an entire megacycle latehuman month later…
Mesch was returning from work, this time she failed to evade the treacherous weather, opting to withstand it and head back home through the camped alleyways leading to that fabled square she had met the human at. She sighed, stopping for a bit and sitting down, squeezing her long ears to get what little water had gathered in there out again. That was when a familiar voice caressed her ears once more. “Hello miss, did you know you have rights?” Her head spun around a little too quicker than she liked, causing some pain to her neck but ultimately ignoring it in favour of finding the source of that blessed voice.
“Of course you do, you’re the first one!” The same human from before sat next to her, shielding her from most of the raindrops thanks to his larger size. “Also I’m now considered a political dissident and there’s an active warrant out for my detainment but that’s not the important thing here! It is this…” The same clipboard came into her view, this time filled with plenty more signatures and from the looks of things there were more pages under the one on top, all filled to the brim with signatures as well. “Whoever has it out for me sure doesn’t like it when people think on their own”
Mesch…was stunned, she had convinced herself the human would never see the light of day again and yet here he was, staring at her with that same smile, the same smile with the same, if not larger, amount of defiant spirit brewing behind it. “How did you?...”
"I am a vessel for liberty, as long as it exists somewhere, I will not be stopped” The human stood up and offered her his hand, she accepted it and after getting pulled up on her feet he showed her another pamphlet, this time it talked about a protest right outside the presidential palace, it was suicidal to say the least…which was why Mesch thought she had finally flown off the handle when she accepted without second-guessing herself.
“So…there are more like me?” Hope filled her heart, it was good, way too good to be true. “Not just more…way, wayyy more! Now come, I will get us there with the Liberty mobile!” She soon found herself strapped inside a vehicle of signature human design, heading straight to the presidential palace, her stomach flipping at the mere sight of the crowd gathered at the meeting point. Chanting slogans, phrases, speeches that at any other point in time she would have rejected as crazy and meant to destabilise the nation her people had built over many lifetimes. They got out and marched with the rest of the assembled nersk until they hit a chokepoint, lines upon lines of enforcers ready to meet them halfway , they were not scared or intimidated, they were ready.
Before long, either due to their own initiative or an order from a higher up, the enforcers were set loose on the crowd. Bashing, bruisng and shooting with electrically-charged pellets, trying their damnest to scare the crowd away. Mesch was scared but she would not flee, for the life she lived before this grand event was nothing more than celebrated slavery. Enforcers descended on her and the human, she was badly beaten but before any serious harm could befall her the human shielded her and proceeded to drive back the enforcers hellbent on killing her without even fighting back , the only weapon in his name was his own body and he did not use it as a weapon, only a a shield.
A few moments before she fainted from the overwhelming pain, she could hear the battle cry she had heard only once before and a sense of comfort, a painful but satisfying end to her life of misery.
This would have been the case if she hadn’t woken an indeterminate amount of time later in a hospital, with none other than the same human sitting besides her, watching her. “Slept well? You deserve it after all these bruises” It was painful to move and for the second time, she ignored it. Twisting just enough to be able to hug the human. “Thank you for everything” The human hugged her back, comforting her with the warmth only his words had provided so far. “You shouldn’t thank me, I was doing my moral duty…there is someone else you should be embracing right now” Behind the human stood another nersk, it was uncle Vinow, the same uncle that had gotten dragged off by the secret police. Tears of happiness overwhelmed her and she soon hugged both of them.
“Some sympathetic soul leaked the coordinates to several blacksites holding political prisoners and from the looks of things this isn’t the last act of defiance we’re going to be hearing about, while you were unconscious I was ferrying as many prisoners back and forth to the capital….Congratulations Mersch, your people have embraced freedom. Enjoy it, your blood, sweat and tears have finally paid off”

2024.05.11 09:00 thefrontpageofreddit New Mexico State University campus sit-in ends in arrests

Thirteen people were arrested at New Mexico State University’s Las Cruces campus Thursday evening after a group of protesters, angry over the death toll and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, held a sit-in for two hours.
Approximately 12 to 16 people sat close together in the middle of the floor, chanting and singing in the main hallway of the Hadley administration building, which houses the president’s office and other executive and administrative offices. Outside, a group of supporters chanted, some drumming on the entrance doors in solidarity as campus police inside prevented access to the building.
Campus protesters had recently organized a week-long encampment on the main campus and issued a list of demands of the university’s governing board of regents, including a cease-fire resolution, disclosure of the university’s investments and divestment from institutions profiting from Israel’s military response in Gaza or affiliated with the Israeli government.
The regents did not take up a cease-fire resolution and NMSU’s interim president, Mónica Torres, informed the camp via letter on May 5 that the university had not located any investments responsive to their demands. She then requested they break camp, citing university policies and safety concerns. The camp, which consisted of more than a dozen tents on a patch of grass east of the Corbett Center student union building, cleared the area on Monday morning, May 6.
On the “Las Cruces for Palestine” Instagram account, the group responded to Torres’ letter, writing that the administration’s response was a “blatant circumvention of the needs of Palestinians and the demands of New Mexico State University students,” and stated that they would regroup: “The fight is not over, the front has changed.”
Thursday sit-in and arrests
An organizer of the group told the Las Cruces Bulletin, outside Thursday’s sit-in, that the action followed a meeting with administration earlier in the day that did not present progress on the group’s demands.
The sit-in proceeded at about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, as finals week neared its end, with Friday the last day of classes. Outside Hadley, students played frisbee on the lawn by the U-shaped driveway leading into campus known as “the Horseshoe.” On a nearby bench, a student posed for a photograph wearing a commencement sash.
By 5:30 p.m., after business hours, Hadley Hall was occupied.
Singing songs and chanting chants, the group was slowly being surrounded by NMSU police, who were, in turn, surrounded by more protesters.
Reporters were not allowed inside the building. Officers, including NMSU PD deputy chief Justin Dunivan, told the Bulletin early during the incident that he might have allowed the media inside.
“We’re working our due diligence to try and de-escalate this situation as much as possible,” Dunivan said. “Obviously, we’re working with the group.”
Outside on the west side of the building, another group of protesters gathered. The group inside, who had broadcast much of what happened on an Instagram live stream, had called for supporters to show up and help the occupation. But those supporters were not allowed inside. The doors were locked and the police stood guard.
So, the group outside banged on the windows and repeatedly chanted “Viva! Viva! Palestina!” The banging was hard enough to shake the windows but not hard enough to cause damage. One protester began chalking slogans on the ground calling for a cease-fire and stating, “NMSU supports genocide.”
A handful of administrators were also inside the building for at least some of the protest. Some watched what was happening elsewhere in the building via the live stream. More protesters arrived, and both the east and west ends of Hadley were crowded with people peering inside, watching their comrades as police exchanged zip-tie handcuffs and discussed their next move.
At 6 p.m., everything changed.
“That building closes for business at 5 p.m.,” NMSU spokesperson Justin Bannister said in a written statement. “Over the course of an hour, the group was repeatedly asked to leave. Shortly before 6 p.m., the group was told that if they did not leave the premises, they would face arrest.”
Word had spread among the crowd outside that police inside, outnumbered by the peaceful protesters inside 2-to-1, was going to start a mass arrest. Then they did, as the protesters outside watched helplessly but not silently: Harder and louder, the protesters banged on the doors and windows, shouting at the police inside: “You don’t keep anyone safe! … You don’t protect the students; you protect the money!” and cursing the officers.
As the protesters inside were cuffed and removed from view, a half dozen Las Cruces Police Department officers arrived along with New Mexico State Police. Two protesters locked arms, pressed against the door and argued with officers who were seeking entry, even as the shouts of others drowned them out.
Finally, more officers filed in and pulled the protesters apart, pressing against one protester’s neck before whipping him around. It’s unclear if the protester was injured here, but the same individual was later taken to the hospital after collapsing. His condition is unknown.
Over the next half hour, police began removing the arrested protesters. Some students walked while others were dragged or carried from the building. Bannister confirmed a total of 13 individuals arrested.
Close to midnight Friday, Doña Ana County Detention Center records had posted booking information for 11 people arrested at NMSU, ranging in age from 19 to 26, booked on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and resisting or obstructing an officer. One was additionally charged with a felony county of battery on a peace officer. Bannister said some could also face felony charges of criminal damage to property.
“The building was cleared and will be open for business Friday,” he said.

2024.05.11 01:51 blopiter The Light: A New Supplementary Economic Model with Specialized Currencies

Why do empires fall? Empires fall because their systems fail to adapt to newer generations. The new generations silently protest this system, and through years of attrition, the system collapses... taking the light of their empire with it.
Hello revolutionaries,
It has come to this. After examining the triumphs and downfalls of previous empires, I’m excited to share The Light: a visionary economic model that utilizes augmented reality (AR) to facilitate a multifaceted supplementary economic system. This model encompasses specialized currencies designed to foster personal growth, community engagement, gender understanding, and support for family life, all within a framework that promotes economic equity and community development. Yes, designing a holistic solution is incredibly difficult and is potentially impossible to implement, so feel free to post any thoughts, insights, or feedback.
Overview of the Economic Model
This system employs an AR platform complemented by publicly owned semi-automated infrastructure to manage specialized currencies, each serving unique societal functions:
Personal Growth (Red) Currency: Earned through activities that foster personal development and health, focusing on demonstrating the application and recall of skills and knowledge. Spent on food, drink and equipment that further fosters personal growth (ie. dumbbells, books). An extension of this idea is that if you complete some schooling (like let’s say you finished secondary education) then you will earn a base amount of red currency every month.
Community (Green) Currency: Acquired by contributing labour to public and community projects, directly improving individual living standards and enhancing community infrastructure. This currency is spent primarily on personal accommodation and home maintenance expenses.
Family (Pink) Currency: A more experimental currency (curious about your thoughts on this). This currency promotes self-gender understanding, opposite-gender empathy, and supporting family life, which is earned through participation in gender education, childcare training, and related programs. This currency is primarily spent on child and baby supplies and certain reproduction-related products. The design north star of pink currency is to promote higher birth rates and greater cohesion between the sexes.
In this supplementary economic model, members will be able to convert some amount of their currencies from this system into cash but not the other way around. This is to prevent exploitation and to preserve the integrity of the system. Under consideration is whether there should be caps to currencies and if users should be allowed to go into debt.
AR System
The AR (Augmented Reality) system at the heart of this economic model is an advanced, interactive platform that integrates digital information with the user's real-world environment. It is designed to enhance individual learning experiences and community engagement through a range of innovative features.
Essentially, the AR system gamifies the living world into a massively multiplayer online game that encourages personal growth, interpersonal trust, community improvement, and even exploration! Engaging tasks are handed out by virtual avatars of prominent local figures, allowing members to engage with figures of their community's history and also giving them a new avenue to preserve their legacy.
The AR system should be designed with robust security protocols in mind and have analog backups in the case of technological disruptions. Also to prevent “cheating” significant events and tasks (such as an Education Recall Assessment to earn Red Currency) should be done in person. Under consideration is that The app should need to stay open to record task progress to discourage users from cheating and/or potentially to curb social media/phone addiction.
Integration of Publicly Owned Automation
Automation plays a crucial role in producing essential resources, ensuring that technological advancements benefit all community members equitably by providing necessities like food and housing materials. We can already automate the production of crops and plant materials; harnessing the power of publicly owned agriculture automation, we could ultimately give away free locally produced food and use plant materials as renewables. It is not at all beyond our capabilities to create fully automated greenhouses. Products created by these greenhouses can be sold for red or green currency.
Community Profiles and War Simulations
We want people to better associate with their local community to prevent issues such as social stratification and globalization.
Community Profiles: Enhance local identity and pride by allowing communities to create profiles showcasing their history, achievements, and cultural values. This will make community participation much more engaging. Community members can vote on slogans and mascots, allowing people to emotionally invest in their local community.
War Simulations: Competitive events that mimic historical or hypothetical conflicts, designed to foster teamwork, strategic planning, and community cohesion. Territories and resources won in these simulations are periodically reset to maintain fairness. Real Conflicts between neighbouring communities could potentially be settled by these war games.
Enhancing Independence and Competence
To ensure that our community members are not overly reliant on technology, we propose integrating more traditional, hands-on methods of learning and crafting:
  1. Local Workshops and Fabrication Labs: Establish centers equipped with tools for woodworking, metalworking, and other crafts, offering hands-on training and preserving traditional skills.
  2. Material Banks: Create repositories for storing materials like wood, stone, and metal, sourced from local environments, promoting recycling and sustainable use. These materials can be purchased locally for cheap using Community Currency.
  3. Tool Lending Libraries: Implement lending programs for essential tools and machinery, ensuring access for all community members.
Education and Training
In this era of technological uncertainty and inequality, we must put greater focus on creating well-rounded generalists. Specialists will still be highly in demand in the age of AI and AGI, but this system is not focused on creating specialists due to social stratification issues.
Ultimately (like way down the road) we want to create a program whose teachings will produce constituents that (if absolutely needed) are capable of handling all their needs themselves. I.e., they can comfortably house themselves, feed themselves, and maintain themselves if they ever find themselves stranded in a forest.
Some additional program workshop examples:
Vocational Training Programs: Expand offerings to include both modern and traditional construction techniques, fostering pride and a sense of accomplishment. Continually educating citizens in construction, maintenance, and safety inspection could bring countless new benefits and freedoms.
Mentorship Programs: Connect novices with experienced craftsmen for skills transfer, extending beyond crafts to include life skills like gardening and cooking.
DIY Workshops: Regularly scheduled sessions empower individuals to manage their own projects, reducing dependency on external services.
Geographic Expansion
We propose expanding these initiatives into less populated areas in North America, such as northern Canada and the inland USA. This would alleviate urban housing issues and promote economic diversity. Under consideration is capping the number of members in high density urban communities to incentives constituents to migrate to less populated rural areas. Imo pressuring migration can be really good but I’ll leave it to Economists to prove this.
Seeking Your Feedback
Community Engagement Features: How do you feel about community profiles and war simulations? Do they add value to community and individual engagement?
Pink Currency Initiatives: Given the focus on promoting gender empathy and supporting family life, how can we ensure these initiatives are inclusive and effective?
Reducing Tech Dependency: What are your thoughts on our strategies to balance technology use with traditional and manual techniques?
Geographic Expansion: What implications and potential benefits do you see in expanding into less populated areas of both Canada and the USA?
This proposal is more than just an economic alternative; it’s a blueprint for a future where technology and community values synergistically improve quality of life. I look forward to your insights, critiques, and suggestions on making this vision a practical reality.
Thank you for your engagement and may The Light forever shine on our Empire!

2024.05.11 00:08 BigGayMule13 Lying in situations where it isn't necessary and doesn't help you

This is probably down to being autistic, but I hate it when you are lied to in situations where it isn't necessary and it doesn't benefit the liar, if anything, it hurts them. For instance, I work at a foundry, and it says "Safety is free". No, it isn't. It comes with an opportunity cost, and it costs time, effort, and energy. That's the entire reason you're having to convince people to be more safe in the first place, because they inherently understand there's a cost to safety and decide to risk not being safe because they decide the cost of the risk of not being safe isn't as bad as the cost of being safe.
It would be far more effective to put an pun e of fucking effort in to come up with something more meaningful and that convinces people more, because right now the fact you're flat out lying to me and put no effort into holding it tells me you couldnt give less of a fuck about our safety, just don't want to deal with the aftermath. You're just willing to say whatever it takes to get us to comply. The thing is, taking 10 minutes to think about this and come up with something better would be so much more effective. Or at least, it wouldn't make me treat what they say as a joke or disregard what they think and instantly form a negative relationship with them.
I realize I'm pretty sensitive to being manipulated, but when it comes to giant corporations, it's par for the course. Plenty of people in power do similar nonsensical things all the time, and it'd win so many more people to their side if they just thought about what they were doing for 10 minutes and cared about the people under them instead of just used them.
Edit: I forgot, the company logs when you get safety gear and makes you turn in old gloves before getting new gloves. In what way is safety "free" here?
Edit 2: There's a rule here about PPE being required on the floor or you get fired, so this slogan is unnecessary. Yet, it's still there, and it's written as it is. To me, it's a dystopian message from the corporation that they have so much power that not only do they have your livelihood in their hands (and even lives), but they want you to know they have this power over you. They view themselves as so untouchable that they believe they can bold face lie to you with the safety slogan, because it's a lie in every way, and you still must comply, or they're destroying your livelihood.
How more people don't see this as the gross corporate overstep of dystopian mindset kind of influencing bullshit that it is is beyond me. They're telling you they have such thorough control over you, they can lie to your face when they don't even need to, because they expect compliance. Fuck. That.

2024.05.10 10:39 Erwinblackthorn The Influence of the 80s

From vaporwave aesthetics to the endless amount of action-movie reboots, we can see a building trend of remembering the 80s as the current form of nostalgia bait. Being about 40 years ago, the 80s are the catalyst for most, if not all, media we see now. The internet began back then, CGI was being tested, global reach started to take hold, electric keyboards became a music staple, and video games had their first crash due to so much home console production. The 80s were a time of massive change that we don’t notice as a difference from the 00s, especially when it comes to things like film and music. Trying to imagine the difference in the metamodernism of 1980-2020 is like trying to see a difference in the art nouveau of 1880-1920.
Previously, I talked about how hipsters change trends every 10 years because of the way public schools work, but the overall change of society goes from generation to generation. The halfway point of a human life is about 30 years, which is about how long it takes for a person in their childhood to enter a “production” age of media influence. Something like Stranger Things needed the Duffer Brothers to enter their late 30s in order for their pastiche and play to be worthy of directing, because they are not able to make these massive projects in their teens or even early 20s. Like any other trend, there was a trailing of its existence in video games of the 90s, as well as movie sequels like Terminator 2, that kept things alive after the decade. Our pop music continues to carry on the electronic sounds that sprouted from the 80s, with the tabloids focused on the singers and their sex lives more than the quality of their music. Most importantly, the inclusion of anime and adult cartoons from back then continues to spread into western fashion as production transitions into a digital form that is easier to maintain than pen & paper.
It's not that the 80s never ended, but rather we never leave the shadow of such a dramatic shift in culture. The sheer amount of consumerism, brought on by globalism and the end of the Vietnam War, caused propaganda to enter a more hippy form of anti-war rhetoric. Ironically, the vast amount of action movies from these times were done in order to say how bad war was, with movies like Rambo: First Blood and Platoon done as a way to make it look yucky. Due to the inability to critique the war during the war(or even shortly after), movies like Star Wars and Aliens would present the Vietnam War in a fictional sci-fi setting, allowing themselves to slip by censorship and inspire future projects. The big guns of the 80s, like the M202 Flash (a quadruple-tube rocket launcher) or the M60, were staples of movie posters and standees that lured us into seeing these action star achievements.
Big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and John-Claude Van damme became global phenomena due to their action roots requiring zero dialogue. Their inability to speak well allowed their body language to do all the talking, with slasher movies rising up like Jason did from the dead in Friday the 13th, for the same reasons. And like the slasher villain, their franchises wouldn't die, allowing home media to turn box office failures into cult classics. Along with the exploitation of war, and the senseless murder of horny teens, came an abundance of gory practical effects, now that the censors were more lenient on sex and violence. The Hays Code prevented clear exploitation of sex, drugs, and violence up until the late 60s; quickly changed by the death of the head of the MPAA to then put the liberal Jack Valenti in his place.
After the Grindhouse era of the 70s, the 80s was all about showing drug use, naked women, and body organs flying all over the place. One of the main contributors of this exploitation, Roger Corman, was the main mentor for most of the big directors during this sudden spark of everything taboo. Deemed “The Pope of Pop Cinema” and “The Spiritual Godfather of New Hollywood”, his influence created a new form of movie production that would spit in the face of old Hollywood by resorting to everything the censors hated. Morals, culture, nationalism, conservatism, modesty, all of these were to be mocked and made into satire as the world became smaller and more global. Besides the advent of New Hollywood were the movies influenced by the Italian crime genre of Poliziotteschi and the Hong Kong action films of the 70s, further increasing the focus on casual urban violence.
Consumerism increased dramatically as fake industries rose to the top. Toylines and video games, as well as children's entertainment, exploded during this decade. The focus on the youth, by selling them the latest trend, was aided by easier access to commercials and even the infomercial that was freed from restrictions in 1984. Innovating technology meant there were new gadgets for people to buy, with nerds becoming more present through our fascination with these new inventions. Video games and movies were easier to gain an audience of collectors, thanks to the advent of the VHS and cartridge.
The ones who grew up during this generation are now the main contributors to what toy companies call “the kidult market”, the adults who still buy toys meant for kids.
Home movies became more popular because of the camcorder, with indie films growing in popularity from the ease of production. While the modernist slogan was “make it new”, the metamodernist slogan was “make it snappy”. It didn’t matter if things were dumb or absurd, because pastiche and play made sure we could simply recognize it and find it entertaining through intertextuality. Rather than focusing on quality or culture, the 80s was a time of focusing on simply making things exist, no matter how silly the premise was. The studios put the captain hats on the directors, with these directors of New Hollywood walking straight out of Woodstock, with plenty of acid still in their bloodstreams.
Music became a different beast once it shifted its platform from radio to TV. The introduction of visual music videos caused musicians to become performative artists, with their fashion sense mimicked by their fans at a wider scale. To attract the audience through a performance, crazy clothes and hairstyles became the latest craze, changing the clean hairstyle of prior into a mousse filled mullet. Punk, goth, heavy metal; all of these were mirrored by the new romantics, glam, and synthwave that shared the same spots on MTV. This was the time when being rebellious and “original” was no different from being any other person, because the fashion was just a difference between leather jackets with studs or jean jackets with rhinestones.
TV dramatically changed to what we know now as “daytime television for mom” and “primetime for dad”. In fact, the first talk show run by a woman was none-other than the Oprah Winfrey Show, started in the 80s. This was done because studios knew that moms were at home, available after the kids left for school, and they could watch a show made for them while they did their aerobics. For broken homes in this period, the latchkey kid generation was forced to stay home after school as a safety procedure by the increase of mothers in the workforce, with single motherhood increasing from the increased access of welfare. Staying home, with little parental supervision, had a strange result of Gen X being raised by the idiot tube, comic books, and home consoles.
In that regard, not much has changed other than the addition of streaming and other online-related activities.
Feminism changed in the 80s by sparking the dreadful sex wars: a debate between whether or not feminism is supposed to be pro-porn or anti-porn. Yes, this was the main issue for feminists during the 80s, until the transition to third wave feminism in the 90s. During this period, media depicted women as valiant prostitutes or brave business women, wearing shoulder pads either way. The demand for equality caused a confusion when feminists couldn’t decide on whether or not sucking dick for money was considered “feminist”. Freedom was questioned and the result became the third-wave feminism that began to question whether or not there was a difference between men and women at all.
Both debates are still going.
Video games were still primitive, barely entering a coherent bit quality, with violent games like Mortal Kombat making concerned parents worried about what their kids are getting into. The arcade was the new amusement hall, allowing kids to throw quarters into “entertainment vending machines” that occupied their time. The mall wasn’t started in this decade, but it began to flourish as the main hotspot for teenage activity, thanks to the arcades and food courts. During the 80s, paper cups of the food court had an orange flower design, which was replaced with the more iconic Jazz design in the 90s. Yes, I was shocked when I learned that as well.
When we view this newfound addiction to the 80s, we are viewing the catalyst of why we are the way we are today. The sex and violence in media started around the 80s, the performative art of musicians expanded thanks to music videos, and everything we see online was pioneered by Gen X nerds who were high on crystal Pepsi and cocaine. With how little has changed, it’s no wonder the 80s are much loved and seen as “a time we remember but didn’t grow up in”. I don’t want this to be seen as a nightmarish journey down memory lane, but rather a reminder that the 80s are when postmodernism first sprouted into metamodernism and started what we suffer through today. Like everything else in mainstream media, the nostalgia bait is fake and forced.
I am not surprised that Gen X will claim their time was better, because that’s all they know. But consider the bits and pieces that inspired the 80s itself, from what occurred 30 years before it. Shows like Happy Days tried to cling to the charm of the greasers during the 50s, or how quirky musicals like Grease and Little Shop of Horror used pastiche to remind us of how wonderful the 50s were. Creature features of the 80s were mostly inspired by the alien invasion movies of the 50s that were used to symbolically spread anti-communist propaganda, accidentally carrying this sentiment into the 80s as the Iron Curtain collapsed. Like any other era, the good seems to out weight the bad, because the good is a channeling of what came before and what lasts forever.
Next time someone demands the 80s, secretly give them the 50s. As good as people try to make the 80s out to be, it is hard to argue against the massive influence of the 50s that caused many of our much loved properties to exist. Sure, Woke Hollywood is now turning those classics into flaming piles of shit as a way to destroy the Four Olds, but we can always revive what was from before. But whatever we do, we must not treat the 80s as the be all, end all. We must treat it as what it is: the origin point of why our media today is totally bogus.

2024.05.10 08:23 Naive_Presentation69 Joost During Eden Golan’s Questions at the Press Conference

Joost During Eden Golan’s Questions at the Press Conference
(Starting at 56:57 for the first specific interaction mentioned)
I’m surprised no one has brought up the interaction between Joost and Eden near the end of the press conference yet.
During the entire time Eden is speaking at least during individual questions, Joost has the Dutch flag covering him until she receives a more challenging question pertaining to the risk of safety she’s put the contest in with her inclusion. When she’s given an out and said she does not have to answer, he comes out and loudly enough asks “Why not?”
He also was asked about whether or not his song will unite people, referencing the Eurovision slogan, and he tells the press to ask the EBU.
From what I’ve seen so far, this has been the most Joost has been outspoken about Israel’s participation thus far. If I am wrong, please correct me. I wonder if something happened to trigger this response (perhaps the Käärijä/Eden incident earlier?), if he snapped, or this has been brewing for it a bit for a while. Total speculations here as to why sorry.
I am a humongous fan of Joost and I’m shocked but not displeased he’s interacting with this after saying he is not a political character, sure he would not say much about the situation during the ESC process. I have been personally against the inclusion of Israel since the start and totally agree with the sentiment that everything feels just so risky and unfair now.
Time-stamp again is at 56:57 for the specific first moment I mentioned. There is another video that proves it was Joost as it shows a wide shot of the table and him taking the flag off to say it towards her. I will link that in the comments.

2024.05.10 07:00 terroristbomber Why is religious intolerance increasing in our society?

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Similarly, hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." This is being taught as my little sister's school. She is in 6th grade. The sad part is, there are full grown adult people who can't seem to grasp the concept.
Today, both our offline and online worlds are filled will all sorts of heinous comments. In the name of defending their own side all they are doing is creating this sense of superiority for themselves and putting down other faiths. Songs like "Bharat ka bacha bacha-" are now played openly and without remorse in neighbourhoods of India, without realising how much it implies. Think about it, if muslims start making songs like "Bharat ka bacha bacha masjid jayega" would it be acceptable? Like you are following your faith, let other people practice theirs. If their faith does not allow some things let us accept that, it's not like our own gives all sorts of permissions. If we Indians do not stand with each other, how can we expect any country to support us, and if they will, which faction would they stand with? If humankind has to become one some day, we've got to stop putting each other down. I recently saw a video where some guys were harrassing and beating up another in a park (in a top tier city, by the way) just because he wasn't repeating their religion slogan. What kind of intolerance and fanaticism is that?
They're becoming the same kind of people they despise, the very same kind they're fighting against. Politics has it's own place, it will try to divide us, treat us like vote banks but as the general public we are the ones who ought to not let it get to us. And what's this ongoing thing about education? Sure, the system needs network and all for being impractical and slow and having lack of choices, but the secularism, the morality that stands at its core is not what the problem is, like some people think. They want to replace the current system with years old ones, what does that even imply? Leave your phones right here and go to a jungle and eat fruits if you want that kind of system, why not start from the beginning? These kinda of debates sybolize just hipocrisy at it's peak.
I know some clowns are just going to take this message as "I'm spitting shit against your religion" and come up with all sorts of disgraceful comments about my mother and say stuff like "librandu" and all. A society that is not willing to change for the good and stick with it's ideals of creating a place benefitial to one section of people is one that's bound to collapse at some point or the other. If you wonder why educated people tend to leave India and live abroad, it's the society that isn't cohesive, so much so that's it's violent. I don't need to remind you of those unbelievable incidents that happen to tourists in India, and not to mention, the Indian people that fall victim to crime every single hour. The safety of women in India is judged by the world, at this point we are not though of as even a good place to visit because of this. Think about it. Don't ruin our reputation in the face of the world.

2024.05.10 01:48 CoHousingFarmer This is what I will do on the day Democracy dies.

This is what I will do on the day Democracy dies.

This comprehensive strategy is designed with the specific purpose of protecting groups most at risk during such political transitions—political activists, minority communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other groups that frequently find themselves targeted by regimes and movements hostile to democratic norms. (i.e. MAGA)
The intent of this strategy is to offer a dual-phased approach that prepares for both pre-election and post-election scenarios. By doing so, we aim to ensure that the rights and safety of at-risk populations are maintained regardless of political developments. The strategy encompasses a series of actions focused on enhancing data privacy, establishing covert safe havens, and creating paper organizations to provide both legal and social cover. Each element has been carefully crafted to blend into the community seamlessly, thereby minimizing the risk of detection and retaliation by potential adversaries, including groups like MAGA, known for their hostility towards certain demographics and ideologies.
The details outlined here are not merely precautionary; they are essential in a time when political unpredictability can lead to sudden and severe consequences for those standing on the front lines of advocacy and social change. This introduction sets the stage for a strategy that is both protective and adaptive, ensuring that all measures are grounded in a deep understanding of the risks involved and the absolute necessity for discretion and thoroughness.

Background Context

Political Climate Overview

The global political landscape is currently characterized by increasing instability and a troubling shift toward authoritarian governance. This trend manifests distinctly in various regions, contributing to a world where democratic principles are routinely challenged and often undermined.

Vulnerable Groups

In this increasingly authoritarian environment, certain groups find themselves particularly vulnerable to persecution and discrimination. Their exposure to risk is exacerbated by their visibility and their perceived opposition to authoritarian values and practices.

The Threat of Project_2025

A specific example of these growing threats is the emergence of initiatives like Project_2025, which symbolize the strategic and organized efforts by authoritarian groups to reshape societies according to their ideologies. Project_2025 is often cited as a blueprint for systemic change intended to dismantle current democratic frameworks and replace them with systems that suppress dissent and centralize power. This project is not merely a theoretical risk but a concrete plan that could lead to significant repression of any form of resistance or criticism.
This background context sets the stage for understanding the critical need for a robust strategy to protect vulnerable groups and preserve democratic norms. The following sections will delve into the specifics of pre-election and post-election strategies designed to counter these threats and safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of those at risk.

Pre-Election Strategy: Part 1 - Data Privacy and Social Media Scrubbing

Objective

The primary objective of this part of the strategy is to safeguard personal data to protect individuals from potential threats in a politically unstable environment. By minimizing the digital footprint, the strategy aims to prevent hostile entities from using online activities and histories against individuals, especially those active in movements or communities that could be targeted in a regime shift.

Importance of Data Privacy

In the context of potential authoritarian shifts, personal data on digital platforms can be weaponized against individuals. This includes identifying personal networks, political stances, and other sensitive information that could lead to harassment or worse. Protecting this data is not just about privacy; it's about maintaining personal safety and freedom in the face of growing surveillance and repression.

Actions

Timing and Planning

Content Removal

Privacy Education

Examples

This refined approach to data privacy ensures that individuals are not only aware of the risks but are also equipped with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves effectively. By systematically reducing their digital footprint, individuals can navigate politically turbulent times with greater security and confidence.

Pre-Election Strategy: Part 2 - Establishment of Covert Safe Havens in Plain Sight

Objective

The primary purpose of creating covert safe havens is to provide secure and discrete support networks for vulnerable individuals in anticipation of potential political instability. These havens are designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday community settings, offering legitimate public functions while maintaining a dual capability to protect and assist those in need. This approach ensures that these safe havens can operate without attracting undue attention, blending naturally into their environments while fulfilling their protective roles. By carefully selecting and managing these dual-functionality locations, this strategy not only provides vital support and protection for vulnerable individuals but also ensures that these safe havens remain sustainable and integrated within their communities. This seamless integration into everyday life is key to maintaining the operation's discretion and effectiveness, safeguarding those at risk while minimizing the chance of detection.

Actions

Selection of Locations

Choosing the right locations is critical to the effectiveness and discretion of these safe havens. The criteria for selecting these locations include:

Dual-Functionality

These locations must adeptly balance their public and covert functionalities:

Implementation Examples

Pre-Election Strategy: Part 3 - Formation of Paper Organizations

Objective

The primary goal of forming paper organizations is to establish entities that provide legal and social fronts for covert operations, safeguarding vulnerable groups. These organizations serve to legitimize and camouflage the broader protective activities under the guise of engaging in widely accepted or non-controversial community functions. By strategically leveraging these types of organizations, the strategy ensures that protective measures are embedded within non-controversial, community-valued services. This careful planning helps maintain the sustainability of the operations, reduces the risk of exposure, and enhances the long-term viability of protecting vulnerable populations amidst political turbulence.

Actions

Types of Organizations

Select organizations that are universally accepted and less likely to attract negative attention from antagonistic groups such as MAGA:

Operational Setup

Implementation Examples

Section 3: Post-Election Strategy - Pivoting Operations

Objective

Overall Strategic Actions

  1. Activate Covert Safe Havens and Paper Organizations:
- Evaluate the political environment post-election and determine the level of threat to vulnerable communities. - Activate contingency plans in prepared safe havens and paper organizations to provide immediate support and protection.
  1. Utilize Established Networks and Resources:
- Employ pre-arranged logistics and support systems to distribute resources, provide shelter, and facilitate the safe movement of individuals at risk.
  1. Community Integration Strategies:
- Deepen involvement in local community activities that are non-political and broadly supported to avoid backlash. - Increase participation in community service projects that enhance local development and provide essential services, reinforcing the organization's value to the community and obscuring its protective roles.

Examples of Pivoting Operations Using Small Businesses

  1. Carpet Cleaning Services:
- Use service vans for discreet transportation of individuals and supplies, leveraging routine operations as cover. - Legend has it that Cleopatra was smuggled into court rolled up in a carpet.
  1. Landscaping and Gardening Services:
- Employ landscaping crews to offer jobs and shelter in modified storage units, providing a plausible reason for the movement and congregation of workers. - MAGA has no respect for minorities, but they like mowed lawns. Transporting people of color in the guise of lawn care workers will usually be ignored.
  1. Mobile Pet Grooming Services:
- Utilize pet grooming vans to distribute resources discreetly and move individuals between safe locations under the guise of service calls. - Pet first aid equipment can also be used on two legged mammals.
  1. Food Trucks:
- Operate food trucks to serve dual purposes—providing food to vulnerable populations and acting as mobile meeting points for logistics coordination. - Food trucks can have electronic messaging services, connected to GPS, and deliver data just by driving by.
  1. House Painting Businesses:
- Leverage access to residential areas and use vans for safely relocating individuals under the guise of transporting workers and supplies. - Cans of paint can be used to store all sorts of things.
  1. Residential Cleaning Services:
- Use cleaning teams for discreet distribution of supplies and temporary housing solutions, under the guise of deep-cleaning or house-sitting services.
  1. Plumbing and Electrical Services:
- Dispatch tradespeople to carry necessities and check on at-risk individuals without drawing attention, using routine service calls as cover. - Plumbers carrying large pipe shaped constructions are less suspicious.
  1. Bicycle Repair Shops:
- Implement mobile bicycle repair services for flexible and discreet transport of supplies and aid. - Bicycle frame tubes can have dual uses.
  1. Fitness and Personal Training Services:
- Use private training sessions to provide physical and mental support discreetly, checking on individuals’ well-being under the guise of health and wellness coaching. - A fitness bootcamp fun run can be an actual bootcamp.
  1. Local Bakery or Pizzeria Delivery Services: - Use delivery operations to routinely check on community members under the routine delivery of food, covering a broad area without suspicion. - Bakers are up early every day without drawing suspicion.

Monitoring and Adaptation

Legal Navigation

1. Data Privacy Enhancements

2. Supply Chain Redistribution

3. Corporate Philanthropy Redirection

4. Product Development with Hidden Features

5. Legal Department Advocacy Against Harmful Laws

6. Marketing Campaigns with Subtle Messages

7. Community Engagement for Resource Distribution

8. Internal Training on Privacy and Security

9. R&D for Dual-Use Technologies

10. Strategic Public Relations

In the face of rising authoritarianism and potential threats, it's understandable to feel overwhelmed by the detailed strategies and safety measures we've outlined. However, it's important not to let panic set in. The purpose of these strategies is not to alarm you but to prepare and empower you and your community.
For many of us, blending seamlessly into our surroundings comes naturally and doesn’t require drastic changes to our daily lives. For those who cannot hide—the most visible and vulnerable among us—it becomes not only an option but a responsibility for their allies to step up and implement these strategies. This dual approach ensures that while some continue their lives with minimal disruption, others work behind the scenes to maintain safety nets and support systems. This collective effort is what builds a robust resistance movement capable of withstanding pressures and protecting its members from harm. It's not just about individual safety; it's about community resilience.
By taking proactive steps now, we ensure that everyone has the support they need to face whatever may come. This strategy is about being ready, not scared. It’s about building a network of support that can operate effectively under pressure while maintaining a facade of conformity to protect all its members.
Let’s focus on being prepared and connected, on understanding our roles, and on supporting each other. With careful planning and solidarity, we can navigate these challenges without fear, safeguarding our rights and freedoms in the process. Remember, the goal here is to keep the light of democracy burning, no matter how dark the times may seem.
sorry if my formatting is all over the place. This is jumble of my notes. I figure perfect is the enemy of good, and some of you have some anxiety over this. The rest of you...should....But It's going to be OK, because we have feet and hands and arms, and we can MAKE it OK.

2024.05.08 14:52 GordyFL Rashida Tlaib: Rafah Invasion Directly Connected to Approval of US Military Aid

"For months, Netanyahu made his intent to invade Rafah clear, yet the majority of my colleagues and President Biden sent more weapons to enable the massacre." -- Rashida Tlaib.
Tlaib was one of 37 House Democrats who voted against the $26 billion foreign aid package to Israel as it continues its war on Gaza. (173 Democrats voted in favor.)
A few days ago Israel's military ordered more than 100,000 people in eastern Rafah to evacuate the area.
"There is nowhere safe in Gaza. Nearly 80% of the civilian infrastructure has been destroyed."
"The Israeli government is only trying to provide a false pretense of safety to try to maintain legal cover at the International Court of Justice."
Tlaib went on to demand that the International Criminal Court (ICC)—which is tasked with investigating individuals for violations of international law —"swiftly issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials to finally hold them accountable."
“Many of my colleagues are going to express concern and horror at the crimes against humanity that are about to unfold, even though they just voted to send Netanyahu billions more in weapons,” Tlaib said.
Rashida's statement page 1: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GM-p3sQWoAE3IRw?format=png&name=900x900
And page 2: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GM-p4OwXcAAUVP1?format=png&name=900x900
It was six months ago that Rashida Tlaib was censured by Congress for her defence of the chant "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".
The Anti-Defamation League and Jewish groups say the slogan, used at protests around the world, is a call for the destruction of Israel.
Pro-Palestinian activists argue that most people using it are calling for an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza, not the elimination of Israel itself.
Rashida Tlaib defended her use of the slogan, calling it "an aspirational call for freedom, human rights and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate."

Fabric selection for optimal performance and comfort

Choosing moisture-wicking and breathable materials such as polyester blends can help keep runners dry and comfortable during intense workouts or races, while also offering flexibility and ease of movement. Additionally, considering factors like durability and UV protection can further enhance the longevity and functionality of the shirts.

Design elements that reflect team identity and branding

Incorporating team colors, logos, and slogans not only promotes unity among team members but also increases visibility and recognition during events. Attention to detail, such as reflective elements for safety during low-light conditions or strategic ventilation zones, can elevate the design while serving practical purposes.

Customization options such as logos, names, and numbers

Customization options allow for personalization and individuality within the team. Offering options for adding names, numbers, or motivational quotes can instill a sense of pride and ownership among athletes. Moreover, providing different styles or cuts to accommodate varying preferences and body types ensures a comfortable and flattering fit for all team members.

Sizing and fit considerations for different body types

Offering a range of sizes and providing sizing charts or samples for reference can help ensure that each member finds the right fit. Additionally, incorporating adjustable features like drawstrings or stretch panels can accommodate fluctuations in body size or shape, allowing for versatility and comfort during runs. Letter sent to Waltham Mayor and City Council
This is a communication I sent to all members of the Waltham City Council
This past week our nation has witnessed an unprecedented degree of open anti-Jew, anti-Israel and anti-American vitriol playing out on university campuses. These hate filled demonstrations are more open and brazen than what took place in 1933 Germany which led to Holocaust and the genocide of 6 million Jews throughout Europe.
Since the Oct 7th barbaric attacks on civilian Israel, young radicals backed by mortal enemies of America and Israel have executed an orchestrated campaign to propagandize that favors and justifies, in their eyes, the sickening brutality of Hamas.
Since 1997, the U.S. State Department designated Hamas as a foreign terrorist organization.
At the forefront of these supporters of Hamas is the organization Students for Justice in Palestine.
How does this relate to Waltham? Waltham is the home of Brandeis University, a non-sectarian, Jewish-sponsored American university. One of the many reasons for Brandeis’ founding was to address the rampant racism and discrimination of all people suffering discrimination in college admissions.
Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) operated freely at Brandeis until shortly after Oct 7th when Brandeis banned them from their campus. The reason for this ban was completely justified and seems to have saved Brandeis from what we saw playing out on campuses throughout Boston and our country.
SJP has been termed “the tip of the antisemitic spear” on U.S. campuses, early on calling the slaughter of Jews, “a historic win for Palestinian resistance“. The hateful rhetoric only intensified. “From the River to the Sea” is now the mildest slogan used by these anti Semites.
When another SJP demonstration took place at Brandeis shortly after the organization was banned, Waltham activists – not even related to Brandeis as either faculty, staff, or students – lent their support to the group “demanding” that Brandeis “reinstate SJP”. Those supporters included a newly formed social media outlet and a Waltham City Councilor. The news outlet also took the opportunity to criticize Waltham Police for answering the Brandeis Police Department’s request for assistance to help in breaking up the demonstration and removing non-Brandeis people from the campus.
At that point, I thought that what we would see of the anti-Israel movement in Waltham had been put to an end. Sadly, it wasn’t.
This past week, Waltham teachers received an email from a high-ranking School administrator, who is also a Waltham political activist, promoting a webinar presented by “Teach Palestine”. This is an anti-Israel, anti-Jewish, and anti-American organization that attempts to spread hate against Jews and Israelis through our public schools.
Only after the courageous questioning from a Jewish teacher who had received the email was the email rescinded.
Councilor Katz spoke at the School Committee meeting on May 1 as a private citizen and concerned school parent. I encourage you to watch the opening Citizen Input portion of the May 1 School Committee meeting to hear his concerns, why this matters, and his constructive comments to the Committee. As he stated, it is important to understand the implication of this action.
I also spoke. I am grateful for the support of Councilors Harris and LaFauci who attended the meeting and the other Councilors who weren’t able to attend but who personally reached out to me to express their support. The School Committee unanimously voted to conduct an investigation into this matter, as Councilor Katz requested.
Members of our Jewish community that I have spoken to have expressed feelings of “paranoia, hands shaking, terrified, and scared” since Oct. 7. One teacher told of her teenage child asking not to not display evidence of being Jewish at Hanukah out of fear. I have even heard that Jewish teachers are trying to find ways to neutralize antisemitism in our schools.
For the first time that I can think of, our Jewish students in Waltham are in fear of being themselves.
Israel must exist as a safe place for Jews to live.
America must be a place where Jews are free of fear.
Especially after the actions by this administrator in the Waltham Public Schools, Waltham must now prove that ALL of our Waltham students are safe. I applaud the School Committee for launching an investigation as a first step.
Finally, Waltham must assure Brandeis that we are honored that they chose Waltham as their home and will continue to ensure their safety if, God forbid, they face the same type of hateful rioting that exists throughout American Universities.

2024.05.03 03:07 jey_613 The new assimilation

I was proud to organize with Standing Together at UCLA yesterday. We held signs like “ceasefire now,” hostage deal now,” “humanitarian aid now,” and “war has no winners.” But it was also heartbreaking to speak with current students who told me about broken friendships and a culture of hostility on campus. I was struck by a conversation I had with a Mizrahi Israeli-American student who told me they hide their identity as an Israeli, and that being Israeli is essentially no longer an acceptable identity on campus. She was not a hasbarist or mouthpiece for AIPAC; just a young person as outraged by Israel’s crimes in Gaza as anyone on the other side of the barricades.
Whether or not Jews are literally unsafe, Jewish people no longer feel open about expressing their identity among their progressive colleagues anymore. That is scandalous enough. It is especially scandalous that this is coming from a movement that makes claims to protecting the sanctity of identity categories and vulnerable minority groups. A movement that pressures people to recite the right slogans or otherwise hide themselves is antisemitic. This is the new assimilation: say the right words or don’t bother being Jewish at all. It is worth remembering that assimilation, too, is a tool of settler-colonialism, and that all Americans participate in an ongoing process of settler-colonialism. (It’s also why groups like Jewish Voices for Peace are so important to the movement: it can’t afford to be seen as pro-assimilation – especially given that Jewish assimilation into American whiteness undergirds so much of the rhetoric castigating Jews – and so groups like JVP serve to launder the assimilationist demands of the movement).
There is a spectrum of possibilities about what is happening to American Jewish life right now that range from “this is Kristallnacht,” which is absurd fear-mongering, to “everything is fine, there are Jewish protesters in the encampment,” which is propagandistic dissembling. There are many different gradations along the way: Iraq in the 1950s, or Poland in the 1960s, and the Soviet Union in the 70s, or Paris in 2024. Or maybe this is something else entirely. But something is changing for Jewish life in America.
American society and political culture is vast: there are other places for American Jews to go outside of these highly educated, left-wing bubbles. But this is the place that many Jews are comfortable in and have always been a part of. They can still retreat into the safety of their communities, or corporate America, or other right-leaning religious spaces and institutions; but the space for Jews who want to be a part of progressive American life without renouncing their identity as Jews is closing. That is bad for everyone – for Jews, for the left, and for America.
If America becomes just another country in the Jewish diaspora – like England or France – then something has already fundamentally changed for us. America was different; it was exceptional in that it offered Jews not just a safe-haven, but liberation; to live as whatever kind of Jews we pleased. How sadly ironic that it is, in part, some of the most assimilated Jews, so unaware and incurious about the breadth and diversity of Jewish life – indeed, the ones who lay claim to being the most committed diasporists – that have abetted this change in the promise of a flourishing Jewish diaspora.

2024.05.02 14:18 NewPollution9711 Post from X @afalkhatib - What are your thoughts?

What being pro-Palestine means to me / my platform: I'm passionately, unequivocally, and without hesitation, a proponent of the Palestinian people’s just and urgent aspirations for self-determination, liberation, sovereignty, and safety. I grew up in Gaza, where I experienced Israeli violence and bombardment, including one incident that almost killed me and caused me permanent hearing impairment; my family is still in Gaza and has suffered dozens of deaths during this latest war; my grandparents were expelled from their ancestral homelands in 1948 and fled to the Gaza Strip; and my parents were raised in a refugee camp in Rafah during the 1950s. This background informs and influences me and speaks to why I care about the Palestinian issue and consider myself pro-Palestine. I am motivated by a sincere desire to see my people obtain their legitimate and undeniable rights, which they have not had for decades.
Yet I, and many others, especially those who are silent or are forced to be quiet, struggle with finding a political home in today’s pro-Palestine movement. Increasingly, it feels as if pro-Palestine activism is dominated by maximalists (wanting all of historic Palestine and other zero-sum positions and approaches), slogan-driven voices, and narratives. There is a lack of pragmatic and humanistic ability to hold multiple truths at once and to advocate nuanced and color-rich positions and views that are not black-and-white depictions and understandings of the Israel and Palestine conflict.
Here’s what, to me, an effective and meaningful pro-Palestine platform entails:
  1. Supporting the right of Palestinians to a sovereign and independent state living in peace side by side with Israel.
  2. Condemning Israeli government actions, policies, priorities, and decisions that kill, harm, undermine, or oppress the Palestinian people.
  3. Criticizing and decrying the conduct of the war in Gaza, the military occupation in the West Bank, and the Israeli government’s disregard for Palestinian civilian lives, and the destruction of property and cities.
  4. Rejecting, denouncing, and exposing the theft of Palestinian lands in the West Bank and the sprawling settlement enterprise and settler violence.
  5. Supporting highly targeted, specific, and effective sanctions against individuals, groups, and entities that are enabling the unjust and illegal occupation of the West Bank and harming Palestinian civilians.
  6. Denouncing and combating the dehumanization of the Palestinian people or the denial of their existence as people with the right to live on the land they called home for generations.
  7. Acknowledging the tragedy experienced by hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians from 1948 and giving them/their descendants the right to return to the lands of a future Palestinian state in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.
  8. Understanding past and contemporary mistakes that have set the Palestinian people back by decades and made them pawns in ideologies and geopolitical programs, agendas, and designs.
  9. Developing a pragmatic and realistic framework for recognizing Israel’s existence, right to exist, and the inevitability of its continued existence, all of which should inform how a solution is approached.
  10. Dispensing with delusional and destructive elements of the Palestinian narrative and acknowledging that there will not be a full liberation of all of Palestine, there will not be a right of return to what is now mainland Israel, and that Israel cannot and should not be confronted militarily or through any form of violence.
  11. Promoting a cultural shift away from revolutionary rhetoric, martyrdom, and armed resistance, and instead, rebranding coexistence and peace as a courageous and necessary evolution to preserve Palestinian lives, lands, and heritage and foster a new generation of nation-builders who are focused on doing the most with what the Palestinians currently have and can have in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
  12. Denouncing and rejecting antisemitism while also acknowledging that Zionists and Israelis are a diverse group/people and that the Palestinians have to work with all of these segments to have sustainable coexistence and peace.
  13. Understanding how violent/hateful rhetoric, actions, and mistakes are detrimental because they empower right-wing and extremist forces in Israel who are opposed to Palestinian rights and that persistent mistakes and incendiary rhetoric and proclamations erode support for the Palestinian people and cause.
  14. Recognizing Palestinian agency, responsibility, and accountability when taking actions that have negative consequences and outcomes and acknowledging that, while there’s an asymmetry of power dynamics, Palestinian leaders, political groups, and prominent figures should make rational and responsible choices to optimize for better prospects.
  15. Accepting that even with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, access to holy sites must always be shared and open to all.
  16. Realizing how nefarious regional players like the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies are not sincere or helpful allies to the Palestinian people and have done so much damage to the entire region and the Palestinian cause.
  17. Developing the capacity to hear Jewish perspectives and grievances, historical and contemporary, to understand why pro-Israel supporters believe what they do and why Israel means so much to so many, even if one disagrees with those opinions and views.
  18. Understanding that Hamas recklessly endangered Palestinian lives and placed the people of Gaza in significant harm and that the group relies on Palestinian suffering as part of its strategy to delegitimize Israel globally while perpetuating the conflict without any meaningful resolution.
  19. Registering the dangers of Islamist rhetoric and ideology that seeks to Islamize Palestinian society and to turn the Palestinian national project into a religious one in pursuit of an Islamic state that, by default, will be exclusionary and incapable of accommodating diverse residents in a future Palestinian country.
I am compelled to share the aforementioned because, for far too many people, pro-Palestine activism has been reduced to incendiary language that fails to capture the multiple moving parts of what is needed to advance the just and urgent Palestinian aspirations for freedom and independence. While many students, activists, advocates, academics, and analysts have their hearts in the right place, many cannot present viable and pragmatic ideas that are not mere rhetorical statements and empty slogans.
I know that many strongly disagree with my views and opinions, and that’s entirely fine. Still, many more are eager to see a recalibration of pro-Palestine activism to actually help the Palestinians achieve statehood instead of inflaming division and fostering hostility towards supporters of Israel and the Jewish community. Many in Palestine are aware of the need to be pragmatic and don’t think that angry protests, BDS, antisemitism, endless academic lectures, social media activism, or “feel good” slogans will actually make a difference.
It’s time for a rejuvenated pro-Palestine movement that serves as a big tent to encompass multiple views and opinions and to invite and promote broad alliances, especially with mainstream Jewish and Israeli communities, to work towards a just and sustainable resolution of the conflict once and for all. This is entirely attainable and achievable with humility, civility, patience, compassion and kindness, perseverance and determination, a willingness to accept reasonable compromises and accommodations, and, most importantly, the recognition of both sides’ undeniable and mutual humanity.

2024.05.02 06:41 I_STOLE_YOUR_BURRITO Preventative search and rescue (PSAR) and lack thereof in CAP

I've had something on my mind recently. Pretty much every type of SAR does some sort of PSAR. Wilderness guys do awareness, teach classes, and man the trails. USAR guys urge people to plan for disaster and teach the community to survive them. The FD around here teaches all sorts of stuff and even has their own version of CERT training. Our PD does something similar. USCG and their auxiliary are always out there doing some sort of safety checks/enforcement. We do nothing like that to my knowledge. We don't teach classes, we don't do community outreach, we don't post flyers with catchy slogans, and we don't urge pilots to report ELTs, file flight plans, or flight followings. Maybe we could even have a funny mascot like Smoky Bear. Who knows, the possibilities are endless. It doesn't seem like it would take all that much effort or time to make at least some of this happen. And besides, it would be great for recruitment to be out there engaging with the aviation community. I'm sure lots of our members would be happy to participate in this kind of thing. I know I would jump at the opportunity to do some PSAR.

2024.05.02 02:49 Sudden-Milk3134 My Terrifying Experience as a Jewish Student at Penn

Hello everyone,
I am a Jewish student at UPenn, and I need to share a truly horrifying experience that happened to me recently on campus (throwaway for obvious reasons). As many of you know, there have been ongoing protests and encampments around the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the atmosphere has been extremely charged. Last week, I was walking past the pro-Palestine encampment near College Hall when I suddenly found myself surrounded by a group of protesters.
They noticed the Star of David necklace I was wearing, and the mood shifted drastically. What started as chants and slogans quickly turned into targeted, anti-Semitic abuse directed at me. They shouted horrific things like "You're a part of the genocide!" and "How can you wear that symbol of oppression?" Their words were not just hurtful—they were frightening. The situation escalated when one of them spat near my feet and another mockingly said, "Go back to Auschwitz!" and “get back in the oven, k*ke!” It felt like I was about to be physically harmed.
I've never felt so scared in my life. My heart was racing, and I was genuinely worried for my safety. All I could do was keep my head down and try to move away as quickly as possible. When I finally got out of there, I was shaking and close to tears. It was not just the words, but the hostility and the aggression in their voices and their eyes that made me fear for my life.
This incident has left me shaken and feeling incredibly unsafe on my own campus. I look over my shoulder whenever I walk near the protest areas. I feel like I can't wear anything that identifies me as Jewish without risking verbal or even physical attack.
I am sharing this because I think it's crucial for our community to know and understand the severity of what’s happening. Anti-Semitism under the guise of political protest is unacceptable, and it threatens the safety and wellbeing of students. It's vital that we address this issue and work together to ensure that Penn is a safe space for everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience.
