My employer asked me on Thursday to sign a letter stating "I Acknowledge I have received full payment for the time I have worked for them and will not be making any financial claims against them in the future.", what happens if I sign this letter ?
Some context, my current contract with employer is supposed to end in May of next year, but I recently signed a new contract with increased pay and lower hours, which starts in June. So is this standard procedure when a contract has to end midway and a new contract is supposed to begin ? Or can signing this have any sinister implications?

With the WEGA, I was limited to S-Video for most of the consoles that also supported RGB. When I tried to do research, I had a very hard time (and actually could not) find a video that directly compared the improvement that using an RGB2COMP makes as opposed to S-Video. All of the videos and posts I found really didn’t do direct comparisons, and only compared it to composite, in which case the RGB2COMP would obviously provide a huge improvement. What I was trying to find though was if the difference between S-Video and RGB2COMP was great enough to make the financial decision to change all my cables and buy new/more equipment. My personal need for the RGB2COMP went away when I got my PVM but I still was curious of the difference and now, using the Extron Crosspoint, I also had the ability to compare native RGB to RGB2COMP. So I decided to get everything I needed to do a comparison in-depth enough (given the equipment I have) to have some solid findings, and for others that may have the same question I did to see if RGB2COMP is the upgrade you are looking for. To get some thoughts and points I would like to state/make out of the way: I was really happy with the improvement S-Video makes over composite, and feel it’s an improvement enough to make the investment for the consoles that support it. I was/still am perfectly pleased with the way that S-Video looks, but given that I now have a PVM and an RGB capable setup I do prefer RGB (there is no denying the jump in quality). I am also aware that the HD Retrovision Component Cables exist, but for the purpose of this comparison, its strictly trying to answer the question “is the RGB2COMP the right choice for me, in comparison to S-Video and keeping native RGB in mind?” Equipment Used: For this comparison I am using the following displays: · PVM 1953MD · Sony KD-27FS120 For this Comparison I am using the following Consoles+ Video output · PS1- S-Video · PS1- RGB (Two separate consoles) For this comparison I am using the following Cables/equipment · Retro Access RGB SCART- CSYNC Cable · Wookieewin SCART to BNC Breakout Adapter · Extron Crosspoint 300 series 12:8 model · Wookieewin BNC to SCART Adapter with a 470 Ohm Resistor on the SYNC LINE- VERY IMPORTANT WHEN USING A CROSSPOINT AND RGB INPUTS/OUTPUTS!!!! · RetroTink RGB2COMP · Onn Brand (Walmart) RCA cables (for component) · OEM PS1 S-Video Cable Main Games used in the comparison: · Final Fantasy VII · Metal Gear Solid Final things to note in this comparison: · The way that this is hooked up is RGB PS1 input into the Crosspoint, output to the PVM (Native RGB signal) and output to the RGB2COMP (Converted RGB signal). The RGB2COMP then outputs component to the Sony Wega Tv. A separate PS1 is hooked up directly to the Sony Wega Tv with an OEM PS1 S-Video cable. · PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE USING A CROSSPOINT AND AN RGB SIGNAL, IF YOU OUTPUT TO SCART OR CONSUMER SPEC EQUIPMENT YOU NEED A 470 Ohm RESISTOR ON THE SYNC LINE FOR IT TO BE SAFLEY USED. The crosspoint outputs TTL level sync and if it is unattenuated it can permanently damage your tv or equipment over time. You can solve this by messaging Wookieewin and asking them to include the 470 Ohm resistor onto your order. · I originally intended to directly compare the RGB2COMP converted component signal to the Native RGB, both on my PVM switching back and forth simultaneously. I quickly realized that this would not be as feasible as I hoped as the PVM processes component brightness differently. It would be very impractical to turn the brightness knob up and down each time I switched, so I ruled this comparison option out, and placed a greater focus on the RGB2COMP VS S-Video comparison. · I chose Metal Gear and Final Fantasy as they have multiple discs and focused my comparisons mainly on their intro screens to keep the photos as similar as possible. I decided not to compare gameplay too much because of its variability given that this is two different consoles running the same game at the same time. · The Native RGB and RGB2COMP comparisons are running at the same time (they are the same signal, one is just converted to component) on two different screens (the WEGA consumer TV and the PVM). · The S-Video and RGB2COMP comparisons are strictly on the consumer WEGA Tv. · The WEGA Tv is set to “MOVIE” Mode and the PVM is dialed to what I feel is the “appropriate brightness” for the PVM (note this is subjective). End Findings and Final thoughts: · Starting with the comparison of RGB2COMP on the consumer WEGA Tv and Native RGB on the PVM, it is very evident that there is what I would call a blue-ish/green-ish hue to the consumer WEGA TV. It is also interesting and important to note that the WEGA and PVM draw the images slightly differently. I don’t think (and cannot say for certain) that the RGB2COMP is what is causing this hue-change, and I strongly believe that it is the Wega Tv as I have found that it provides a very “Super Saturated” look as opposed to the more “Natural” Look of the PVM. This is very color pallet subjective and it’s very possible that someone else’s PVM will not have the same look and hue as my PVM, same with the WEGA Tv. Other than these differences the signal is very similar and picture quality is equally good on both. Chances are that you wouldn’t even notice the hue difference if you were only looking at one or the other. · For the S-Video comparison I started with the Final Fantasy intro screen comparison to mainly show the color difference, which is very slight but very noticeable. The biggest difference that I found overall is the difference in brightness. I would also like to point out that when looking at this comparison S-Video has what I can best describe as a “white dot effect” in some images, and this is most noticeable in the closeup of the Final Fantasy letters. Now as previously stated the biggest difference is the brightness, I chose and put a greater focus on the intro of Metal Gear to show off how significant it is, as Metal Gears intro is already dark in nature. I feel that the images speak for themselves in terms of brightness, and would like to say that to me brightness makes a huge difference in gameplay. I played Halo to completion on composite video, and I felt that some areas were unbearably dark! It felt like I could not see where I was going or looking at all! I later made the upgrade to original competent cables for the Xbox, and right away noticed the brightness difference. The areas that felt pitch black on composite, had a faint outline in component, allowing me to have an idea of where I was going while still keeping that dark atmosphere intact. All of this to say that brightness makes a big difference in how you experience the game (at least for me). To answer the main question, there is a noticeable difference and upgrade in using the RGB2COMP over S-Video, but if its worth the financial expense for the upgrade is for you to decide. (NYSE: MUX) (TSX: MUX), is pleased to provide the assay results from the currently completed drill season at the Los Azules project in Argentina. The prime objectives of this season’s infill drilling campaign were: 1. to confirm the size and grade of the deposit as compared to the 2023 PEA estimate and upgrade the resource categories for the upcoming feasibility study; 2. test for extensions of mineralization beyond the current pit shell; and 3. explore our large property package for other mineralized areas. Based on the assay results received to date, our first objective appears to have been met. Initial interpretation suggests that our infill drilling will result in an increase in Measured and Indicated resources and an overall mineral inventory within 5% of the PEA estimate. Testing for extensions beyond the planned pit has successfully encountered mineralization both to the north and to the south. Primary mineralization was intercepted (202.0 m of 0.20% Cu) over 400 meters north of last year’s deep exploration hole, confirming its extension at depth a significant distance to the north. Exploration south of the planned pit has intercepted the principal mineralized intrusive more than 700 meters south of previous drill intercepts and indicates that prospective intrusives continue well to the south of the pit. Exploration over our property has produced an intriguing target, late in the season. Initial results of a concession-wide regional mapping and sampling campaign have identified strong evidence of a large porphyry system 3 kilometers east of the Los Azules deposit. Porphyry-style veining and quartz vein stockworks with copper oxide mineralization have been recognized within this new target, with assay results pending. Additionally, this news release covers all results from the first half of the 2023-24 drill program (see Table 1 ). Final results will be published when all the geochemistry is completed. The objective of the 2023-2024 drilling campaign is to collect all the necessary information to support the completion of the Los Azules Feasibility Study by early 2025. This information continues to arrive and will be processed in the following months. Resource drilling is focused on converting all the mineralization to be mined in the first 5 years to Measured and Indicated resource, to increase confidence during the payback period. Results are summarized in two schematic cross sections ( Figures 2 and 3 ), which include simplified interpretations of the Overburden, Leached, Enriched and Primary zones. The Enriched mineral zone refers to the enrichment of a copper deposit by precipitation-derived water circulation that carries copper minerals downward through the rocks to accumulate in a thick, often horizontal “blanket”. Immediately above the Enriched zone is the Leached zone, from which copper was removed and transported. Weathering and oxidation often aid in this process. Below the Enriched zone, the Primary (or Hypogene) zone is formed by ascending copper-rich fluids having a much deeper magmatic origin. The green line on the sections indicates the pit floor of the 30-year pit shell from the 2023 NI 43-101 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA). Figure 1 presents a plan view of the location of two sections and the holes reported. Adjacent cross sections are located 50 m apart from each other, starting with the lowest numbered section at the south end of the deposit and progressing to the north. This hole is located completely outside of the 2023 PEA base case mineable pit shell. This hole is over 400 meters to the north of exploration hole AZ22174, also located outside of the 2023 PEA base case mineable pit shell, which encountered 1,052.0 m of 0.29% Cu including 480 m of 0.42% Cu ( Figure 4 ). These intercepts suggest that primary mineralization continues at depth a significant distance to the north. Exploration drilling south of the deposit has extended the presence of the early mineral porphyry more than 700 meters south of previous drilling and well outside of the southern pit boundary. This porphyry is host for the majority of the mineralization at Los Azules and encountering it a significant distance farther south indicates that the deposit may also continue in this direction. Assays for these holes are pending. A comprehensive structural model for the deposit has been completed that will provide a better understanding of structural controls on the deposit and aid in future exploration work. Field verification of a previous property-wide structural study using satellite information was carried out in January and has refined the identification of nearby exploration targets. Early results of this work have identified a large new porphyry system 3 kilometers east of Los Azules. Preliminary work has identified porphyry-style veining and alteration, indicating the presence of a porphyry copper system. Areas with strong quartz vein stockworking and the recognition of copper oxides at surface add to the prospectiveness of this newly identified area ( Figure 5 ). All samples were collected in accordance with generally accepted industry standards. Drill core samples, usually taken at 2 m intervals, were split and submitted to the Alex Stewart International laboratory located in the Province of Mendoza, Argentina, for the following assays: gold determination using fire fusion assay and an atomic absorption spectroscopy finish (Au4-30); a 39 multi-element suite using ICP-OES analysis (ICP-AR 39); copper content determination using a sequential copper analysis (Cu-Sequential LMC-140). An additional 19-element analysis (ICP-ORE) was performed for samples with high sulphide content and that exceeded the limits of the ICP-OES analysis. The company conducts a Quality Assurance/Quality Control program in accordance with NI 43-101 and industry best practices using a combination of standards and blanks on approximately one out of every 25 samples. Results are monitored as final certificates are received, and any re-assay requests are sent back immediately. Pulp and preparation sample analyses are also performed as part of the QAQC process. Approximately 5% of the sample pulps are sent to a secondary laboratory for control purposes. In addition, the laboratory performs its own internal QAQC checks, with results made available on certificates for Company review. It was recommended on my schools website to apply for Financial Aid even if you think you don’t need it. I am hesitant to do so because I don’t want to rack up unnecessary debt. Has anyone used both their GI Bill and Financial Aid? What are the pros and cons (if any)?

It’s a long story, actually it’s two stories in one, because as it involves the same person over more than decade long, it’s worth telling the whole story all at once (and it makes it may more fun too!). I decided to share it because it’s the kind of story that doesn’t seem to happen very often.
Below you will find goodies about an ex, a wedding, a dress, a delivery company and more! Please simply be mindful English is not my first language, trying my best to entertain you all the same.
This story goes back a long way, when (let’s name him) Frank (M) and myself (F) were both in college (both 17 at the time, we’re now 33), young and naive teenagers. We started as friends and eventually decided to be together. We then decided to move to another city together, as I was about to start university.
It went well for a while and then started to go south. So, long story short, after about two years together, we decided to break up. It wasn’t a mean breakup or anything, I think we were mostly disappointed it didn’t work out. Anyway.
We live in the province of Quebec. For those who don’t know, there is this weird tradition of starting and ending about any lease on July 1st. I have no idea why, but Canada’s Day has always been for anybody moving, in this province, a synonym of sweating under the sun, moving boxes, lifting heavy things and ending the day with cold beer and cheap pizza in a new and probably not so clean apartment. Why this context? Because we broke up two weeks before July 1st. It means it was virtually impossible to find another apartment so close to this date. We were about 7 hours away from both our families living on the countryside. We were also awfully broke students. We decided to give it a chance at being roommates.
Yes, it was super awkward at first, really not easy to manage to say the least. We were walking on eggshells and were definitely on edge for a while. There were also some pretty awkward situations, like this one time he decided to bring a one night home as I was sleeping in the adjacent room. Not only that, but the shameful phone call he had to make, waking me up in the middle of the night, so I could unlock the front door because he had forgotten his keys to find out he had brought home an acquaintance of mine. Nowadays I find this story delightfully funny tbh. But on that night, as I couldn’t go back to sleep because the gal decided to show off how an amazing singer she could have been —because, oh boy, this voice carried loudly all the way to my ears for more than an hour — I did not find it funny. I was furious, but prepared myself for the eventuality it would ever happen again. Do you remember the “Tiny Wall Challenges”? Let’s just say I had some games ideas after that night.
Anyway, anybody would probably have walked away but we still deeply cared for each other. We even did better than just survive through this whole year as roommates, we decided to move into a bigger apartment with two other friends. Believe it or not, we stayed there two more years. Moreover, these years were some of the best years and I still keep lots of good memories from this period.
Fast forward to the second part of the story. After being roommates for years, at some point we parted ways and lived our lives. We maintained contact throughout the years and when Frank finally started dating his wife to be, I was absolutely happy for him. He asked her to marry him and she said yes! Our friendship still held such a high place in both our hearts that he asked me to be one of his groomsmen, with his other best friend and his little brother. I felt so honoured, as I was technically a female, to be chosen to be on his side at the wedding.
The bridesmaids chose matching dresses in a beautiful forest green, all from a specialized website from UK, and I was to also be in a dress on the groom’s side, but matching the colour of the other groomsmen suits. With Frank, We all shopped together for their suits, chose a beautiful dark grey for his and a light grey for us, and we were able to match it perfectly with clothing samples I ordered from the website. Everything was going as planned. That being done, I ordered the dress, considering buying two inches heel shoes to go with it. It would take about four months to be done and the dress would arrive about a month and a half before the wedding. I decided to wait for the dress to arrive to pick shoes to go with it.
Four months passed, and I finally received a notice that the dress was on its way. The bridesmaids dresses arrived a bit before mine and they were all absolutely beautiful. As we all ordered from the same shop, we were able to choose different dresses that suited each of our styles, with identical fabrics that made the whole thing look fantastic.
I received the delivery’s notice, saying it was to be delivered by DHL. (If you never had to deal with this delivery company before, let’s just say this in itself is a red flag, but what could I do.)
I chose a delivery date that I could be home all day. I awaited their arrival, and waited. At some point I received a notification that they couldn’t deliver it because there was an error in the address. I called DHL customer service as soon as I read it and could verify with the clerk on the phone that there was no error on the original delivery address and that actually, internally, they miss-wrote a letter of the postal code. The person assured me that the delivery person would be notified and they would then be on their way back.
I waited. It never came.
The next morning, I received a notification that, unable to deliver it, the expeditor had agreed to DESTROY the package! I screamed! Why in the world would the UK online shop allow to destroy a custom made dress that took four months to do?! And why the hell the delivery service didn’t make any other attempt after being responsible of the address error in the first place. I was beyond mad. I called DHL, they confirmed someone at the company had agreed on the destruction of the item. I wrote to the person I was in contact with from the beginning at the online shop (this lovely clerk who clearly never asked for any of this). Over there, they couldn’t find who the hell agreed to this insane request to destroy the dress. They were also appalled and didn’t understand how it could have happened. They could put a request to redo the dress rush, but we first needed to either try to stop the destruction from happening by going to the DHL warehouse directly, or to obtain a proof from DHL that the dress was irreversibly lost forever.
It felt surreal! The fiancées were both furious too. There was only one DHL warehouse we could go to do this kind of request in the city and it was really far. As the clock was ticking, they jumped in their car, joined me, and to the warehouse we went, arriving a few minutes before closing like an epic movie scene. The clerk there was mind blown by the whole situation. It seemed we were too late and the best we could do was to have the proof that, in their system, the dress had effectively transited and was destroyed.
With photos as proof in hand, I forwarded everything to the clerk of the online dress shop. Days passed, as they were awaiting the okay to start sewing a new dress. They were really trying their best to help the situation but it seemed to be a mess over there about the whole situation. We were now a month before the wedding. At some point, I was starting to panic. They finally agreed to redo it, but it would be waaaay too close before the wedding to receive it. Like a few days before kind of close, if nothing happened in transport this time.
I decided to go shopping for another dress. I spent a whole day trying to find the perfect grey that would fit the other groomsmen suits. In the last possible boutique, there was one dress checking all the criteria. I bought the new one and wrote to the first shop, hoping they would agree to refund the lost dress.
I took an appointment later that week to do the adjustments on the new dress. I then shopped for shoes. I found a cute pair with one inch heel that would be perfect for me. I’m not used to walking with heels, so the lower the better after all.
Like all this turmoil wasn’t enough, my family called and told me that my grandfather’s health suddenly decreased. Remember? Seven hours drive from family. I canceled some plans and bought a ticket for the night’s bus ride right after the dress fitting. On that morning, the UK shop agreed to refund the dress. That part was a big relief. I went to the dress fitting. At last, three weeks before the wedding, The second dress would be ready in about seven days. I came back home to gather some things to get back out to catch my bus.
But suddenly, the doorbell rang.
I opened.
Some DHL delivery man casually gave me a package and left.
Yes. That’s what you think.
I closed the door, went to my room, sat on the bed, opened the bag. It was indeed the first dress. I had a melt down. I cried so hard. I put the dress down, looked at it, told it “I’ll deal with you when I come back” and went away to the bus station.
Few days later, coming back from the family, I collected the second dress and dealt with the first one, which no longer fitted the length of the shoes! My MIL at the time knew an old lady who was lovely enough to accommodate me and do the fitting of the first one for a as modest price. I decided to keep it a secret until the wedding day. (These friends wouldn’t do any drama about reveals etc, nor would they think it was stealing any of their thunder, don’t worry about that.)
On the wedding morning, I effectively surprised the bride and groom with both dresses. They were mind blowed, flabbergasted to say the least! I put the original one for the official photoshoot and discretely changed right after dinner for the other one. People around that had followed the incredible adventures were laughing out loud and finding it hilarious that I decided to wear both of them as I had so much troubles!
Quite a story with dresses and with an ex, right? Guess what, I’m also the godmother of their first child!

I’m still in the process of finalizing my double consolidated Parent Plus Loans to SAVE. I sent in my paper SAVE application to EdFinancial through certified mail and it was delivered by end of March. I haven’t gotten any communication yet from EdFinancial and when I call, the representative mentioned there is no indication of it being processed. They said that doing it online would be faster.
Am I able to submit the SAVE application on the EdFinancial website? I initially did a paper consolidation for my loans to two services, then did another consolidation through the StudentAid website to EdFinancial. Does anyone know if I can apply to SAVE through the EdFinancial website at this point?

TLDR below.. The situation is quite complex so thanks to everyone who may take the time out to read and possibly respond.
I’m making about 75k and in approx 60k of credit card debt due to a combination of past stupidity and then going beyond my means through an emergency. After paying rent, groceries, some minimum payments (sometimes I need to skip those simply because I have no money), I’m left with about a hundred dollars every month (sometimes less or even needing to use cards even more for necessary expenses). I’m getting married next month (fiance is aware of the debt and is super supportive of me and my process of financial recovery). I would be filing individually sometime after getting married (more on that later).
Now for the complicated parts.. I’m aware that once we get married, her income will be included in our household income. Due to a horrible abusive relationship with her parents, she had to hold off on going to college and has only recently started to take some classes part time at her community college using income she’s earned as a nanny for our neighbors off the books. Shes also had a few other jobs here and there that were properly taxed. I understand that all income will need to be reported when we file, but will the untaxed nannying job screw us over when i file? Our neighbors don’t want to set up proper payroll but could she still file a correction on her taxes and list that income as “other income”? Should she quit this nannying gig and try to find a job that properly taxes her? Would filing a few months after obtaining said job be better? The amount she made via nannying is less than 50 dollars over the income limit of needing to be taxed. She filed taxes for the income she’s made in her other jobs.
In addition, we’re in the early stages of evaluating bankruptcy and figuring out which chapter to file. Our total income (including the untaxed nannying job) plus our various allowances on the means test may qualify us for chapter 7.
Even if we wouldn’t qualify for 7, we would consider chapter 13. Now for my second question, in making a payment plan with the trustees, would we be able to list her tuition as a budget line item? Or would the money we spend on that still be considered disposable/discretionary income? Could that be listed as a marital adjustment? She doesn’t have a college degree yet and would be going for her bachelors degree. I know that there’s increased discussion these days about how “necessary” college degrees are nowadays but for the career field she is pursuing, it’s absolutely critical. She’s still applying for various programs so at this point the cost is unknown.
I’m well aware that many would advise that it might be beneficial to hold off the wedding because adding her finances does complicate things quite a bit. However, in addition to love lol, the rush to get married is due to the fact that without getting married, my fiancé will not be able to apply for financial aid for school. She’s currently 23, and under Department of Education rules, anyone 24 and under must have their parents report their finances. The only exceptions would be legal emancipation (which is impossible given that she isn’t a minor anymore), homelessness, or marriage.
Given her relationship with her parents, and their refusal to even report that, getting married would be the only way she could afford to go to school. I will try to talk to an attorney sometime soon but I’m kind of reaching a breaking point now and could use some encouragement but also some real talk.
TLDR:
-Getting married soon despite $60k credit card debt. -Fiancée's untaxed nannying income complicates potential bankruptcy filing. -Considering Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy, unsure if tuition can be included in expenses. -Marriage is necessary for fiancée to receive financial aid for college.

Even if we wouldn’t qualify for 7, we would consider chapter 13. Now for my second question, in making a payment plan with the trustees, would we be able to list her tuition as a budget line item? Or would the money we spend on that still be considered disposable/discretionary income? Could that be listed as a marital adjustment? She doesn’t have a college degree yet and would be going for her bachelors degree. I know that there’s increased discussion these days about how “necessary” college degrees are nowadays but for the career field she is pursuing, it’s absolutely critical. She’s still applying for various programs so at this point the cost is unknown.
I’m well aware that many would advise that it might be beneficial to hold off the wedding because adding her finances does complicate things quite a bit. However, in addition to love lol, the rush to get married is due to the fact that without getting married, my fiancé will not be able to apply for financial aid for school. She’s currently 23, and under Department of Education rules, anyone 24 and under must have their parents report their finances. The only exceptions would be legal emancipation (which is impossible given that she isn’t a minor anymore), homelessness, or marriage.
Given her relationship with her parents, and their refusal to even report that, getting married would be the only way she could afford to go to school. I will try to talk to an attorney sometime soon but I’m kind of reaching a breaking point now and could use some encouragement but also some real talk.

However, given the social, political, and economic climate that we are in, those in power who use their influence on controlling society most definitely possess these insidious traits. - Double-standard Enforcement: By labeling something as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized”, they can claim this is morally wrong if it promotes traditional dynamics between men and women. Heterosexual relationships are condemned while at the same time Same-sex relationships are praised. Additionally, heterosexual relationships with main white male characters turn antagonistic and spotlight stealing. This is deliberate as to promote the “Girl Boss” ideology to indoctrinate women into the Feminazi state of mind. By enforcing ideologies to denounce humanity in certain targets, it deactivates your conscience by saying this is not human therefore its ethically okay to treat this target without compassion and deny the fact it has sentience. We gamers fall under this category for journalists, developers, companies and society at large. right now i’m at a material/financial low point but mentally and emotionally i’m feeling better than i have in months. i feel like i’m being pulled in a more spiritual direction, but don’t really know what to make of it. my intuition is pretty damaged from years of suppressive and excessively skeptical thought, so i feel “cut off” from my spiritual side. any advice on how to better connect with myself or guides that could aid me in this?

2024.05.16 20:00 UNAdmissions I’m an AO at Nevada’s flagship public research university and I think we’re underrated. Here’s why.
Campus: The University straddles the old and the new. It turns 150 next year and it has a traditional, collegiate, brick and ivy campus. Classical architecture, a sprawling Jeffersonian quad, and designated a state arboretum. Pair that with almost $1 billion in construction in the last 15 years. New library, residence halls, math and science building, engineering building, business building under construction. Also recently acquired Sierra Nevada University which is now a satellite campus called the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.
Why underrated? 1. National brand hasn’t caught up with the enormous growth in recent years and 2. Perceptions of campus are tied to perceptions of the city of Reno.
Location: Reno, Nevada is probably most known for casinos, desert, and Reno 911. Less known is that Reno is situated in a beautiful valley on the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. 4 seasons, 300+ days of sunshine and unparalleled access to the outdoors. 35 minutes from campus to the chairlift at Mt. Rose ski resort and less than an hour to 10 different ski and snowboard resorts including Palisades, home of the 1960 winter Olympics. 45 minutes from campus to the beaches of Lake Tahoe and everything the Tahoe basin has to offer. Hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing, you name it. The city itself is transforming its local economy to include a huge range of engineering firms, tech startups, government contractors, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. It’s also driving distance to major NorCal population centers. 2 hours to Sac, 4 hours to SF and Silicon Valley.
Why underrated? Reno NV is known more for being the butt of jokes and less known for its incredible access to the outdoors and growing tech-focused economy.
Academics: 145 undergraduate programs, each with their own unique bright spots. The most prominent programs right now are probably within the College of Engineering because of the huge investment in facilities and faculty. There are the big, popular standbys like CS with great connections to Silicon Valley that send a lot of students to the bay area for summer internships. But there’s also great niche programs like batteries and energy storage systems. Nursing attracts a lot of students because of our partnership with local hospitals and recent ranking as the top nursing program in the country. Pre-med programs are always popular with well-established pathway programs like Biochem and Molecular Bio, Biomed engineering, Public Health, etc. These are also strengthened by close ties to the University of Nevada Medical School on the north end of campus with many faculty teaching at both the undergrad and MD level. And for those that just want to make lots of money right out of college we’ve got some incredibly in-demand earth science programs (Geophysics, Mining Engineering, Hydrogeology, etc.) that supply Nevada’s hugely important mining industry.
Why underrated? Universities that admit elite high school students should be expected to produce elite college graduates. But that’s not necessarily indicative of institutional quality, it’s just indicative of how well the admissions office curated a class of high achievers. What’s impressive is admitting a wide swath of the population and then transforming that diverse group of students in to capable graduates who are ready to go off and live happy, healthy, productive lives.
Student Life: NCAA Division 1 sports, Greek Life, 200+ clubs and orgs, award winning student newspaper, and incredible study abroad program. No matter how you want to spend your time outside of the classroom you’ll find your people. There’s always something happening on or around campus and one thing you’ll notice when you visit is how much school pride everyone has.
Why underrated? Maybe if our athletics office had more success it would be better known but I think our students can take pride in the fact that their tuition doesn’t supplement a huge bloated athletics office. But you’ll still regularly catch Nevada on the national stage in NCAA tournaments or bowl games.
Cost/Financial aid: This is a big one for me. Full cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room, board, and books) for an out of state student is about $40,000. Most of our out of state students come from western states and qualify for WUE which drops it to $27,000. In state students pay $23,000. Most R1 schools in the west aren’t as generous with WUE and so for many students looking at our peers they can expect to pay closer to UC Davis’ (next geographically closest R1) whopping $72,000.
Why underrated? The way I like to frame it to prospective students is this: Let’s say you’d pay $45k more per year (Davis 72k minus our WUE 27k) to go to a different R1 research university. That’s $180k more for a bachelor’s degree. The list of schools and programs where it makes sense to spend that extra $180k is very, very short.
