I have two systems that need to be repaired or replaced. They are 8 years old. We live in AR and last year we had $550-700 electric bills, while using scheduled thermostats and only keeping the house at 78 in the evening and night. Not running during the day.
What are your thoughts on just repairing systems vs. completely new systems. Second though, single stage vs. high efficiency systems?
The quotes range from 7-10K for replacement parts and some ductwork to almost 40k for full high efficiency replacements. Not sure if we would ever see costs enough to make it worth our investment.
The AC units are Trane XR. The 4 ton has two zones living room/kitchen and kids bedrooms. The furnaces are Trane XV95 high efficiency units.
I have four quotes. Four reputable companies in the area with ratings of 4.8+ with hundreds of reviews on Google. They are all telling me anywhere from slightly different to completely different advice.
One guy says there is no need for a new system, they are only 7-8 years old, just replace the compressor on the 2 ton unit and the evaporator coil on the 4 ton (unit was missing over 5 lbs of refrigerant through evaporator coil leak) and extend the plenum on the upstairs furnace unit because the bypass is too close to the evaporator coil (see pic). He also says that we have a reducer right past our bedroom vents that is causing problems getting airflow down the line to the rest of our vents. Add additional vent to office, which is at the end of our bedroom ductwork run.
Second quote, the guy was telling us he recommended going to a 2.5 ton ac unit, or preferably a 3 ton high efficiency unit and 5 ton high efficiency unit and replacing the furnaces and removing the zones.
Third guy wants to replace 2 ton with 2.5 ton unit, keep the furnace and completely redo the ductwork and change our return from a 14x30 to 16x30. Replace 4 ton outside unit and evaporator coil.
Last guy says put a mini split in office (end of our 2 ton unit ductwork), get a new 2 ton and 4 ton unit.
