Previous Part
I grabbed the back pack Bianca had left in the kitchen and waited in the living room. I had no idea what she was packing for but after this morning I wasn’t going up there to check. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to ask Tuck yet. I wanted him to tell me he was a werewolf himself, that seemed like pretty important information just on the basis of trust. But I also wanted to know why he was really out by the mine yesterday. His story didn’t add up and there’s no way he knew we would be up there, I think that was just a coincidence. As I was trying to come up with exactly how I wanted to broach the question to Tuck, Frank put a hand on my shoulder. He was wearing his lab coat so I guessed he just came up from the basement. The hairnet he always seemed to wear when he was working was in its usual spot. I suppose he wore it to protect the memory of hair that was once on his head. He looked solemn and a little sick as he turned to me.
“Keep her out of trouble will you? I know we haven’t always been the best to her and I’m sure Stein and I don’t really give her the help she needs. But she’s like the daughter I never had time to have, I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to her.”
“Frank, you probably do more than you know for her. Did she ever talk about her family with you?”
“Very briefly throughout the years, I don’t know if she’s told you much or anything for that matter. It… it certainly wasn’t easy for her growing up and it never got easier.”
“I’ll do my best to keep her out of trouble. If she does end up following me into… whatever this trial ends up being just promise me you’ll have a way to get her out. Some kind of contingency, I can fend for myself but I’ve seen her just shut down before. Like yesterday in the caves someone grabbed her and she lashed out and just… wasn’t herself. She just froze and I don’t want that to happen anywhere near Shaoni.”
“I’ll work on something but I can’t promise that. Like Stein said we’re scientists, we don’t really do field work like that. If I do come up with something you’ll be the first to know. I’m glad she ran into you when she did Keith, she could really use a friend.”
With that Frank walked away, back towards the kitchen and into the basement.
It wasn’t long after that when I heard Bianca coming down the stairs asking if anyone had seen her toothbrush. At which point Rocco appeared in front of me from god knows where holding a suspicious disassembled toothbrush.
“Not. A. Word. Kid.”
Rocco growled at me as he scampered out the door behind me.
“I have a couple that I packed for the trip here from Wisconsin I can just give you one of those.”
I called to Bianca. Partially because I wanted to get a move on and partially because I wanted no part in whatever Rocco was getting up to. If there was one supernatural thing about this town it was that raccoon’s knack for mischief. I get that’s what raccoons are known for but seriously, Rocco was on another level. Bianca reluctantly agreed to take one of the travel tooth brushes I had back at my house. I wasn’t even going to ask why she packed a duffle bag to go a few hundred feet into town and back again.
“Come on we’ll take the bikes again.”
Bianca said as she made her way behind the house.
“I’m telling you they’re going to give me tetanus one of these days but sure. Lets just stop at my place first, I want to drop off this backpack you took yesterday first.”
Bianca was still wearing the ratty jeans she’d taken from me yesterday and at this point I just figured she could have them. I really wasn’t about to get into an argument as to why she should take my pants off and… ugh even saying it is just… no. Those were hers now as far as I was concerned.
We rode over to my house through the crisp autumn afternoon. The trees along the street were finally being to change color, it looked like a scene from a postcard. One of those one’s of the idyllic towns that could’ve come straight out of a hallmark movie. I had to give it to Eagles Peak, it may by turning into a den of vipers for me minute by minute but it sure could be beautiful, in it’s own isolated kind of way.
“Wow its very… small.”
Bianca commented as she stepped into my house and looked around.
“Yeah not everyone has a blank check from two different governments like Stein.”
“I didn’t mean li…”
“It’s ok I know what you meant, its different.”
I said cutting her off before she had the chance to apologize. I dropped off the backpack in my room and rooted around in the one duffle bag I still hadn’t unpacked from my trip here. I found the toothbrush without to much trouble and walked into the living room to give it to Bianca only to find her unpacking on the couch.
“What’s going on here, are you moving in?”
I joked, not expecting the answer I was about to get.
“Yeah, kind of hard to keep an eye on you from my house. I suppose I could from the top floor but if we’re working against Shaoni that doesn’t seem like a great idea. She’s got that whole thing with lighting and I get the sense her being angry at you while your up in the air isn’t a great combination.”
Bianca said, unpacking a blanket like she wasn’t just inserting herself into my house.
“WHAT?”
I shouted, maybe a little too loud.
“Is there a problem?I thought you wanted me looking out for you, this is me, doing that.”
She said looking up at me with puppy dog eyes. You’ve got to understand, those eyes coming from someone like Bianca, glowing or otherwise, well you just can’t say no to that. When it’s Bianca you really can’t say no. She can just take that option away in an instant but again she didn’t for me, it was still my choice.
“I.. sure but you can have my bed. We’ll get everything set up once we get back from the Roost. You did tell Frank and Stein about this right?”
I gave in, deciding to let her stay.
“I’m a big girl, they doin’t need to know everything I do, and… thanks”
“It’s alright, just let me know next time you’re going to pull something like this ok?”
I added, equal parts excited to actually have someone to talk to besides myself in my own home, and worried what Frank and Stein might think was going on here. I put those thoughts out of my head for the moment as we got back on the bikes.
It was about 3 by the time we made it to Tuck’s bar after the delay Bianca had caused by moving herself out before we left. Just as I expected the sign said closed but the door was unlocked. The bar looked exactly the same as the last time I was there. Stone fireplace roaring and pristine wooden floor looking like it had been polished just this morning. Tuck was sitting behind the bar looking worse for wear. The look on his face said he knew we were coming and he wasn’t to thrilled about it.
“Does he know?”
Tuck asked pointedly, looking straight through me and speaking to Bianca.
“About me or you, because the answer is both of us.”
Tuck shook his head at this and a grim look came over him.
“Ya shouldn’t have pulled him into this.”
“Actually I pulled her into it if anything, going out there was my idea. I’ve got a mark like Robert’s, its actually what brought me to town in the first place.”
I said, hoping my honesty would get the same out of Tuck.
“So that bird called ya out here somehow?”
“More or less, but that’s not what I’m here about. I want to know why exactly you followed us out there yesterday.”
Tuck sighed and gestured to the seats at the bar, beckoning Bianca and I to take a seat.
“When Robert chased ya out the other night some of his friends came by. They all got that mark like him, they were sayin’ something about the thunderbird makin’ an appearance back at the old mine. I wanted to see for myself and make sure they were wrong. I found those bikes and ended up followin’ the trail. By the time I got there some guys were poking around that hole in the wall and a storm had kicked up. I saw them cut that rope and figured they weren’t doin’ no good. I… changed and dealt with them then forced my way into the old mine entrance, the rest ya already know cause I ran into ya not long after.”
This story made more sense to me, Tuck never came out there to find me, I just so happened to be out there. Those boulders I thought were moved had been, by Tuck which made me question just how strong he was. Each of those huge things had to weigh tons and there were three strewn about the entrance.
“Ok that makes more sense than what you told me, but what were you hoping to accomplish up there. If you ran into the thunderbird what would you have done?”
“I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t really up there again but the storm seemed to say otherwise. No storm like that just pops up and goes away, the bird had to be involved with that.”
“Actually she was there, just not as some huge bird. She was down in the caves with us but she looked human, native American to be more precise. That’s how I met her when I got marked and now she’s holding some kind of trial out in those mines.”
“You met the thunderbird, its a person? What does she want with this place now.”
Tuck said his demeanor changing into one full of concern. I didn’t know what else to say cause at the moment I didn’t actually know much more than that. It’s infuriating, this being in the dark thing. I just settled for dodging the question.
“Not to change the topic but are we to early to grab a bite to eat?”
I wish I had a camera handy because the face Tuck made at that whiplash change of topics was priceless. I can’t properly do it justice with words. Suffice it to say one of his eyebrows hit the ceiling while the other hit the floor and a violently confused expression plastered his face.
“Sure I guess, what do the two of ya want!”
Tuck exclaimed, throwing his arms in the air and walking back behind the counter. I ended up ordering some fried chicken sandwich with bacon and pickles, and as I took the first bite my risk of heart attack increased ten fold. Bianca ordered the same thing and was pecking at it inquisitively when I asked,
“So what’s the story with Rocco?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean why, why did Frank and Stein make him in the first place?”
I asked through a mouthful of greasy goodness.
“Well I think it started out as a joke, then Stein actually wanted an assistant and that joke became Rocco. They worked on him for a while, pretty much they took a random raccoon off the street and played around in its head. I know there was some gene splicing involved but if you want to know how they did it ask them.”
“So he was supposed to be an assistant in the lab? I think I’ve seen him doing one thing to help them out this whole time and he was poking through a back alley for old batteries.”
“Yeah, he’s not a great assistant, must be good enough though cause they haven’t tossed him out.”
“Are you kidding me! If they tossed him out he be so much worse! Just think, Rocco left to his own devices without any supervision.”
Both of us shuddered at the thought, if he was bad now he’d be a menace to society without the little control we had over him.
Bianca and I ate and eventually Tuck came out and I told him my story about Imalone. He seemed really concerned at the fact that the thunderbird could be walking around town and he wouldn’t know about it. I assured him that Shaoni was really hard to miss if you just looked at the eyes. It wasn’t like she looked any different either, no matter what she was wearing those tattoos would be a dead giveaway. Tuck assured me he was going to keep an eye out and gave me his number to call if I saw her. I don’t want to talk down on Bianca, but something about having a werewolf looking out for me as well was reassuring. Tuck told us a bit about what he was doing with Frank and Stein too. Apparently he contracted his “disease” as he called it long before he came to work in Eagles Peak. He was originally from Louisiana and moved to New York for a change of scenery and ended up getting a job in the mines here around 1940. I should also mention Tuck ages very slowly due to his “disease” so he looks like he’s in his 50’s or so but he was born in 1900. To his credit you’d never know he was anything other than your friendly middle aged bartender.
Bianca and I were getting ready to leave as it came time to open the bar for real. When Tuck offered us a round of drinks on the house.
“No, no that’s alright Tuck, you’ve done enough for us we’ll see you later.”
Bianca politely declined, pulling me towards the door. After I said my goodbyes and we had gotten back to the bikes I asked Bianca,
“Do you not drink? I’m not judging just… when Tuck offered you seemed kind of jumpy.”
“I just never have, I was kind of bouncing around the country when I turned 21 so I just never started.”
“So your telling me you never had your first drink? Well, we have to fix that then.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, its like a right of passage where I’m from. We’ll pick up a six pack or something on the way back but we don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to.”
I said, trying to convince her. I’m not a huge drinker but I am from Wisconsin, alcohol is a way of life out there and we’re know for our beer. In my family turning 21 and having your first drink is cause to bring the whole family together. I couldn’t do that for her but I could at least give her the experience, maybe give her just one more good thing to remember.
Bianca agreed and we pulled into the Save-A-Lot just outside town. The building was painted white bit it was slowly peeling away revealing a concrete grey underneath. The big glowing sign was missing a few letters now simply reading Sav- -Lo. Despite its decaying state it still had the classic beer cave inside. I took a second to look for something from Wisconsin, call me a snob but we do beer right. I settled on a 12 pack of Leinenkugel, that was close enough to home for me. Bianca trailed behind me in the store, a bit like a scared cat looking for a place to hide. Obviously she didn’t get out much and having people she didn’t really know much about was stressing her out somewhat. We got to the checkout and an older cashier eyed my suspiciously.
“Can I see an ID”
She croaked in a hoarse smokey voice. Now I don’t always look my age but I’m 28 there was no reason to try and ID me. That didn’t really bother me so much as the fact that my wallet was still at home. I’ve been spending the cash Bianca gave me back when I watched her house and I just keep that in my pocket. I also have a bad habit of only brining my wallet when I knew I would need it instead of carrying it on me. Regardless I started to sweat a little as I tried to explain the situation.
“You see I would but I left mine at home and I’m not sure if…”
I was cut off by Bianca reaching out and brushing the cashier’s hand Then looking her straight in the eye. I knew exactly what she was doing.
“Look we don’t have an ID for you right now can you just take it on faith?”
“I understand sweetie, here why don’t I cover it for you, my treat.”
The cashier said, turning a complete 180 on her previous question. I looked from Bianca to the old woman a few times before Bianca finally shrugged.
“What?”
I wondered if it was that easy for her to change my mind back when she manipulated me into watching the house.
“So she just payed for it?”
I asked Bianca as we walked back to the bikes.
“That was her, not that I couldn’t make her do that. As far as I can work out, if I suggest something people tend to do it. Over the years I learned how to control that to the point where I’m only able to do it when I want to. Frank said it has something to do with pheromones in my breath or something like that.”
Bianca explained, hoping onto her bike and keeping pace with me back towards my house. I didn’t ask for an explanation but she gave it. I’m not really sure pheromones were something that could have that profound of an effect on someone but I’d just add it to the list of questions I’d have to ask Frank or Stein at some point.
“Still it was a bit weird seeing it from the outside. Was I that easy to convince before?”
Bianca got a mischievous look in her eye.
“Oh, you were so much easier, I barley needed to try. Just flip my hair and flutter my eyes a few times and that was that.”
She said, smiling devilishly at me. I blushed a little bit, partly because that’s probably all it would’ve taken from someone who looked like her and partly because I was embarrassed that she might not just be poking fun at me.
“No you definitely did something to me, I lost like 6 hours in your kitchen! That was you right…right?!”
I asked a little nervous. Bianca just laughed and pedaled off ahead of me. She did not put my mind at ease with any sort of answer but she did beat me back to the house.
When I got in She was sitting on the couch sorting through a pile of movies she pulled out of her duffle bag. She really had just thrown the entire contents of her room into a bag and brought them over. Bianca seemed to settle on a movie before she realized I’d walked in.
“So you like horror?”
I said, gesturing to the same movies I’d seen lying out earlier when I watched her house.
“Yeah, I just like seeing how people think all these things act. Like Tuck, werewolves are always looked at as these big imposing things in movies but he’s a puppy in comparison.”
“The guy looks like he could tear me apart down the middle with his bare hands buuuut, I see your point.”
Thinking back to every interaction I’d had with the guy so far, he never really was as scary as he looked. I sat down on the couch, dropping the case of beer on the coffee table.
“So, have you picked out a movie yet?”
To which Bianca closed her eyes and poked at a random movie in the pile. “Dog Soldiers”, it was called, actually I think I’ve heard of that movie before. One of those its so bad its entertaining things. I popped the movie into my DVD player and sat back, handing Bianca a beer.
“ Is this how normal people feel?”
She asked as the movie started.
“Depends on what you mean by normal, even then I’m not sure that’s the question I’d be asking. Maybe you just finally have a chance to relax after years of never being able to.”
“Oh sure, I’ll just relax now that I know we have the actual thunderbird looking to force you into some kind of trial.”
Bianca joked sarcastically before suddenly softening and taking a sip of her beer.
“Uggg that’s bitter… but not bad. Maybe your onto something Kieth.”
I don’t remember much from the movie. One scene stuck with me, a guy trying to fist fight a werewolf. It was already campy but the effects on the werewolf were just dated enough to make it that much funnier. Bianca and I couldn’t help but to Imagine Tuck as the werewolf, bewildered as to why this scrawny thing thought it could fight him. At some point the beer ran out, Bianca and I making it through the whole case. I remember getting up to go to my own room and Bianca pulling me back. What I didn’t remember though was letting Shaoni into my house. I was woken up by a tap on my shoulder, coming face to face with her. Shaoni’s hand was on one shoulder and Bianca’s head was on the other. At some point we both feel asleep on the couch together, the TV was still on, illuminating the dark room.
“Well well, I wasn’t expecting you to have guests Keith.”
Shaoni mocked, clicking her tongue at me as she finished. She wore the same white night dress I’d seen her in before. Something in the house was open, a window, a door? I didn’t know but the smells of an autumn rainstorm blew into the house, a storm no doubt caused by Shaoni.
“I… its not what it looks like.”
I stammered out, embarrassed to be caught like this.
“I don’t care what you get up to in your free time Keith. I just came to tell you I’ll expect you at the mine tomorrow, The trials will be starting soon and I want everyone who will be participating to meet each other, you will be participating, won’t you Keith?”
She asked like it was a question but it really wasn’t, wether I liked it or not I was going to be there, I could come willingly or kicking and screaming. She was simply asking which I wanted it to be.
“When do you want me there?”
“Oh don’t worry about that, I’ll send someone to collect you around noon.”
With that she turned to walk away, but I wasn’t done with her yet.
“Wait! What exactly are these trials, what am I going to be doing out there?”
“That would spoil the surprise Keith, be patient, you’ll know in time. That pretty little thing there, her name wouldn’t happen to be Bianca, would it?”
Shaoni asked, pointing at Bianca who was still asleep on my shoulder.
“How did you know that?”
I shot back, immediately jumping to Bianca’s defense. I hadn’t known her all that long true, but I didn’t want her any closer to this than she had to be.
“Oh no reason.”
Shaoni said with a snicker that sounded more like a hiss. With that she disappeared, and I mean she was just gone. One minute she was there the next there was a gust of wind and a brief flash of light and she was gone. The disruption was enough to wake Bianca up finally.
“Ugh, head..still…spinning.”
“Heh, I think you overdid it a bit last night.”
“Ugh maybe.”
She said, holding her head that still rested on my shoulder.
“What’s going on anyway, why’d you wake me up.”
“It’s just… well things are moving a bit faster than I hoped.”
I said, trying to reassure her that it was nothing, most likely failing miserably but she didn’t seem to notice. There was a second there that I thought maybe things could just be normal. This whole thing would just blow over and Shaoni would never come back and get me for these “trials” but I always knew it was wishful thinking. Now Bianca was a part of it to somehow, that had made up my mind. She’d been through enough, now Shaoni seemed interested in her all of a sudden. If putting myself through these trials kept her away from Bianca that’s exactly what I’d do.

1. Temporary Wall Treatments

One of the quickest ways to add personality to your rental space is by sprucing up the walls. Since most landlords have restrictions on painting, consider these temporary wall treatment options:
  • Removable Wallpaper: Peel-and-stick wallpaper comes in a variety of patterns and colors, allowing you to transform a room without any damage to the walls.
  • Wall Decals: Vinyl wall decals are a versatile option for adding interest to plain walls. They can be easily removed without leaving residue.
  • Fabric Wall Hangings: Create fabric wall hangings using colorful textiles or tapestries. Simply hang them with removable adhesive hooks for a bohemian touch.

2. Upgrade Lighting Fixtures

Good lighting can instantly enhance the ambiance of a room. While you may not be able to change overhead fixtures, you can still make a big impact with these budget-friendly lighting upgrades:
  • Floor Lamps: Add floor lamps in dark corners to brighten up the space and create a cozy atmosphere.
  • Table Lamps: Place table lamps on side tables or desks to provide task lighting and decorative flair.
  • String Lights: Hang string lights along walls or ceilings to create a whimsical and inviting glow.
  • LED Bulbs: Replace outdated bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs to save on electricity costs and create a brighter environment.

3. Invest in Multi-Functional Furniture

When space is limited, multi-functional furniture is your best friend. Look for pieces that serve more than one purpose to maximize functionality without overcrowding your rental:
  • Storage Ottomans: Use ottomans with hidden storage to store blankets, magazines, or extra pillows while providing extra seating.
  • Folding Tables: Opt for folding tables that can be easily stored when not in use or pulled out for dining or workspace.
  • Convertible Sofa Beds: Invest in a sofa bed for guests or movie nights, offering seating during the day and a comfortable sleeping space at night.
  • Nesting Tables: Nesting tables are perfect for small living rooms, offering extra surface area when needed and tucking away neatly when not in use.

4. Create a Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are an excellent way to showcase your personality and add visual interest to your rental space. Plus, they're easy to customize and rearrange:
  • Mix and Match Frames: Gather an assortment of frames in different sizes, colors, and styles for a curated look.
  • Include Personal Photos: Incorporate personal photos, artwork, and mementos to make the gallery wall uniquely yours.
  • Use Command Strips: Hang frames with removable adhesive strips to avoid damaging the walls and to make rearranging a breeze.
  • Experiment with Layouts: Play around with different layouts before committing to one. Start by arranging the frames on the floor to find the perfect configuration.

5. Embrace Textiles and Rugs

Textiles are a simple yet effective way to add warmth, texture, and color to your rental space. Here's how to incorporate them:
  • Throw Pillows: Layer throw pillows in different sizes, patterns, and textures on sofas, chairs, and beds for a cozy and inviting look.
  • Area Rugs: Define separate areas within a room by using area rugs to anchor furniture groupings and add visual interest.
  • Curtains and Drapes: Install curtains or drapes to soften the look of windows and add privacy. Choose lightweight fabrics for an airy feel.
  • Throws and Blankets: Drape throws and blankets over sofas or armchairs to introduce warmth and comfort to your living space.

6. Optimize Storage Solutions

Effective storage is essential for maintaining a clutter-free and organized home. Here are some budget-friendly storage solutions for renters:
  • Over-the-Door Organizers: Maximize vertical space by hanging over-the-door organizers on closet doors for shoes, accessories, or cleaning supplies.
  • Under-Bed Storage: Utilize the space under your bed with under-bed storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags for seasonal clothing, bedding, or shoes.
  • Floating Shelves: Install floating shelves on empty walls to display books, plants, or decorative items without taking up floor space.
  • Baskets and Bins: Use decorative baskets and bins to corral small items on shelves, in closets, or under coffee tables for a tidy look.

7. DIY Decor Projects

Get creative and personalize your rental space with these easy and affordable DIY decor projects:
  • Gallery Wall of Postcards: Collect postcards from your travels or local art shops and create a gallery wall using removable adhesive strips.
  • Painted Accent Furniture: Give old furniture a fresh coat of paint in a bold color or pattern to add a pop of personality to your space.
  • Macrame Plant Hangers: Create your own macrame plant hangers using inexpensive cord or rope to display your favorite indoor plants.
  • Fabric Covered Cork Boards: Cover cork boards with fabric remnants to create stylish bulletin boards for notes, photos, and reminders.

8. Accessorize with Plants

Plants not only add visual interest and color to your rental space but also purify the air and promote a sense of well-being. Here's how to incorporate them into your decor:
  • Choose Low-Maintenance Plants: Opt for easy-to-care-for houseplants such as succulents, snake plants, or pothos that thrive in various lighting conditions.
  • Hang Planters: Install hanging planters from ceilings or walls to save on floor space and add greenery to vertical surfaces.
  • Group Plants Together: Create a cohesive look by grouping plants of different sizes, shapes, and textures on shelves, tables, or windowsills.
  • DIY Terrariums: Make your own terrariums using glass containers, rocks, soil, and small plants for a budget-friendly and stylish display.

9. Personalize with Decorative Hardware

Switching out hardware is an easy and inexpensive way to update the look of cabinets, drawers, and doors in your rental space:
  • Cabinet Knobs and Pulls: Replace outdated or mismatched cabinet knobs and pulls with stylish and modern options to instantly refresh kitchen or bathroom cabinets.
  • Door Handles: Upgrade plain door handles with decorative knobs or levers to add personality and charm to interior doors.
  • Drawer Liners: Line drawers with decorative or scented drawer liners to protect surfaces and add a touch of luxury to your storage spaces.

10. Stay Organized with Command Centers

Create a central command center in your rental space to keep track of schedules, tasks, and important documents:
  • Wall-Mounted Calendars: Hang a dry-erase or chalkboard calendar on the wall to jot down appointments, events, and reminders.
  • Mail Organizers: Use wall-mounted mail organizers or baskets to sort incoming mail and keep important
  • Decorating your rental space doesn’t have to break the bank or violate your lease agreement. 2024.05.15 21:48 Nora_Clybourn [RF] Will for Adventure

Part 1
Chicago, 2016. Flinn Gerald is doing his best to make it in the city. Born in Selma, Alabama, he has spent his entire life trying to escape the ever tightening grasp of his small town. But alas, he made it out and is adapting to life in the big city. With a big fancy corporate job, an endless supply of friends, an apartment with a stunning view of the lake, and great distance from his family, what more could he need? Well, there is a lot more (or less) that he needs, but of course that is a story for later.
On a typical Tuesday night at a bar, the regulars crowd in. Flinn is late, as usual, as he stayed late at work (again), but on his arrival, the cheers and hugs from all the friends make everyone forget of the regular inconvenience. Conversation ensued, starting with all the boring finance jargon, but as the drinks flowed, so did the conversation, moving away from work and more into life. This is what everyone preferred.
“Another round, anyone?” asked Raheem, enthusiastically. After a murmur of concurrence, he stood up to make his way up to the bar. “Flinn, care to lend a hand?”
Raheem Bartlett was Flinn’s college roommate and the first person he met outside of his hometown. The pair hit it off instantly despite having wildly different backgrounds. Even in their freshman year, the engineer and the finance major would get into all sorts of trouble together, but eventually they leveled out. Six years later, they still have each other’s backs just like day one.
The pair made their way up to the bar and waited to get the bartender's attention. “What's up with you, bro?” asked Raheem. “You’ve been seeming a bit off.”
“Oh, ya know. Work, life, everything kinda happens so fast. Work has been busy as of late, and the hours long.”
Seeming displeased by this answer, Raheem stared back in concern.
“Really, I’m fine… just long hours.”
“Back in school you’d pull back to back all-nighters and then still make it to a morning class. I find it hard to believe that the mighty Flinn would be so setback by ‘long hours’.”
Flinn took a moment to ponder, staring down at the bar covered in various stamps and postcards beneath the epoxy surface. “I guess, ya know, it's not all it was cracked up to be. I guess I had expected more.” Flinn had mostly dropped his accent, but occasionally it would still slip out.
Despite coming from a long line of mill workers (mostly paper) and farm hands who never ventured further than the Dallas county line, Flinn yearned to leave his small town and conquer the world from a young age. Coming from the poorest county in Alabama, his family always squashed his dreams, labeling them as impossible. But Flinn knew better. Or, at least he knew he could do better. Graduating top of his class a year early and winning a full-ride scholarship to Northwestern University, he had proved everyone wrong and set his own path. The path he was told was impossible became his reality.
“More what?”
“Nothing, really. I mean, what more is there? This is what I always wanted, right? The stable job in the city, never having to worry about money. It’s great, and I couldn’t be more grateful, but… something is missing. Doing the same thing day after day staring at a screen, moving clients money around. I… just hoped it would be more fulfilling, especially after all it took to get here.”
Before he could finish his thought, the bartender came up to take their order: another round for the table, plus a round of shots, plus two more shots.
“What am I saying, really?” added Flinn. “I shouldn’t be complaining. Look at where I am now compared to six years ago. So much has changed. My home, friends, even my diet. I just feel a bit off. Like I need something more to do..
“I get it, bro. Adjusting to your new life can be rough. Enjoy it for a minute or two.” Raheem slides a shot in front of Flinn. “Here, take this.”
Tuesday had become fairly consistent to this point for this group of misfits: Raheem and his girlfriend Amy; Jack; Jasper, from Flinn’s firm, and his wife Max; and of course, Flinn. For nearly two years, these six have been meeting at O’Malley’s every Tuesday night for drinks and trivia. Some nights are more wild than others, but Tuesday has become the staple of the week among them.
Drinks flowed pretty regularly and heavy over the next few hours as the clock approached the end of day. Still going round for round on alternating tabs, the useless debates began to heat up.
“You can’t seriously think Wicker Park is the best neighborhood outside the Loop. Y’all need to get out more,” said Flinn.
“Bro it’s obviously Wicker Park,” argued Raheem.” Right on the blue line, getting to O’Hare is insanely easy, plus you can’t find better music in the city. Besides, Wicker Park has Davenport’s.”
“No one ever says Wicker Park,” adds Jack. “Have you ever heard someone say Wicker Park before?”
“Dude, but you can obviously get to O’Hare from anywhere in the city,” said Flinn
“Sure, but beats walking through that dumb Block 37 Center transfer like you and your red line. No transfer is the way to go, plus the blue line gets you right to the center of the loop.”
“So does every other L line as long as ya don’t mind walking a few blocks!”
“You’re both wrong,” adds Max. “Neither matters because Midway is better anyways.”
“Woah!” the whole table murmurs, sharing shocked looks as if she just confessed to a crime. Flinn rolled his eyes at this notion.
“Who flies out of Midway?” asks Raheem.
“What? Less people, cheaper flights, and more space. Why wouldn’t I fly out of Midway?” said Max.
“Wait, wait, that aside,” interrupts Raheem, “can we go back to the fact that Jasper thinks Sheffield is the best neighborhood? I feel like we moved past that too quickly.”
The debate rages on for many more minutes, until Flinn, seemingly out of nowhere, had enough.
“Can y’all just shut the fuck up! Why does it even matter?” Everyone’s glance quickly shot over to Flinn as a deafening silence overtook the table. Everyone pondered how to respond, and couldn’t seem to find an answer. This behavior from Flinn was unexpected, nay, unheard of. Flinn was the most level headed amongst them by far. Not even Raheem, his best friend of six years, had ever seen him get angry, let alone over an inconsequential friendly argument. “I…” Not even Flinn knew what to say next. “I’m going to go home. Long day tomorrow.” Already on his feet, he quickly walked away from the table and out the door.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The walk home was fairly brisk, but Flinn had grown fond of the cold. He tucked his hands into his coat pocket and hunched his shoulders forward, only looking down at the pavement ignoring the mostly asleep but still wide awake city surrounding him. His thoughts ran wild and near out of control. Of course, his intoxication did not help with clarity, but the inner dialogue was deafening. Not even he knew what was bothering him, but he was obviously bothered, deeply. He made a fool of himself in a way he never had before, and right now he felt he did not recognize himself. Surely some sleep will help, right?
He slowly made his way down the steps to the platform, carefully watching each step as to not fall, to wait for his train. He posted up against a pillar and stared off onto the dark, empty tracks. What has gotten into me? He did his best to calm his racing, wasted mind searching for some legibility amongst his thoughts.
Once he finally got home, he slumped down on the couch and scarfed down some week-old sushi he found in the fridge. He turned on some old documentary and was asleep before he knew it.
Suddenly, he was woken up by his phone ringing. It usually does not ring this time of night and was less than thrilled to be woken, so he let it keep ringing. It stopped after a couple of seconds, and he glanced down at the screen:
Mama
(2) missed calls
Dad
(1) missed call
Now concerned, he calls his mom back in a hurry. “Hello?”
“Flinn? Your grandfather, he’s dead.”
Part 2
The wet air engulfed Flinn’s face as he stepped out the airport doors into a warm February day. Six years had passed since he smelled the Alabama air. Even after all this time, it still smells just as he had remembered as if not even a day had passed. The drive to Selma was another ninety minutes, and despite having five days to mentally prepare himself for his arrival, it was not nearly enough time. He had not seen or spoken to anyone from his town, not even family, since he left early that August morning all those years ago. He left everything behind to start his new life. The life so many told him to not start, that he needed to stay. He left anyway and never looked back.
That was, until now. He had little choice in this regard. He knew he would have to make his return someday, but he knew not when nor for what. But today was that day. Flinn and his grandfather (Pops) had always been close. If anyone had been supportive of him, it’d have been Pops, but he was a man of little words. Even when he could talk, he hardly chose to. He was a great listener, and not just because he could not speak. He showed he was engaged and listening no matter what Flinn had to say. At times, he felt Pops was the only one who understood him as if he had been just like him before, but no one would ever talk about his past. All Flinn knew is Pops lost his tongue after a failed lynching.
The familiarity of the scenery zipping past was bittersweet. He had not realized how much he missed the rolling hills and thick forests beneath the unforgiving southern sky. He kept his head pressed against the cool glass of the car window even through the constant bumps in the road. He couldn’t look away. So many memories happened here, and the closer he got, the more plentiful the memories became, and the more potent they were, and the more painful they’d become.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the dust settled behind him, he stood on the driveway staring at his childhood home still unsure how to process his emotions. It was all so overwhelming. He was thinking everything at once. He took a deep breath, rolled back his shoulders, and swallowed. He reached for the door handle, hesitating slightly, and took a step in. One foot, and then the next.
“Martin!” Flinn smiled as his old friend and childhood dog rushed towards him without hesitation. He knelt down and embraced him as Martin excitedly rustled through his arms seemingly showing more energy than he had in years.
He walked down the hall and around the corner into the living room. There, both drawn to the large television like moths to a flame, he saw his parents sitting beside one another on the couch watching some daytime program with their backs to him. They seemed to pay no notice to the commotion at the front door nor the loud creaking footsteps he took along the old wooden floors. They knew he was there; they just chose to ignore him. He walked into view to greet them. "Mama, dad." His father smiled slightly but caught himself and refrained.
Mama kept a straight face, but seemed to be fighting tears."Howard, help Flinn with his bags, dear."
“No, it's alright, I know where to take them,” said Flinn. “How are y’all?”
“Service is tomorrow at eleven down at the ole First Baptist Church. Make sure to wear something nice.”
“Alright, mama. I’ll... I’ll see you at dinner.”
“Whole family is coming tonight. Dinner is served at...”
“At seven, I got it, just as always.”
“It’s good to see you, kid.” said his dad. “Let me know if you need anything”
He did not expect things to go like that, not that he knew what to expect. He had hoped time would have been more forgiving. Perhaps leaving unannounced in the middle of the night was not the best plan, but at the time he felt as if he had no other choice. Everyone knew he was leaving. That was no secret and had not been for years before any plan had actually been set into motion. No one knew the date or time, except for Pops, of course, but he’d never tell. Of course he wanted everyone to know. He wanted everyone to be proud of him, but it was too big of a risk and commendations were too much to expect. Besides, Mama always had her schemes, and had she known, she would have found a way to stop him.
Not much had changed since he’d been here last. The old wood paneling still lined nearly all the walls, crack in some spots, replaced in others, but all coated by decades of cigarette soot. On the walls were a combination of family portraits from over the years and cheap artwork found at the flea market. Old green furniture, too many house plants to count, and a tacky themed kitchen, it was all still the same.
His childhood bedroom, however, was much different. Hardly even recognizable, what was once his bedroom was now a storage room filled with endless shelves and boxes. He set his things on the lonely cot in the corner, sat down, and took it all in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not realizing he had drifted off, Flinn awoke and looked at the clock. 6:55. Convenient. He sat up and brushed his hair down with his hand as he suspected it was sticking up in the usual way. He rubbed his eyes and made his way to the dining room. The whole family was there, probably about twenty people or so, all scattered about throughout the kitchen, dining room, and living room engaged in various conversations. His nana, aunt, and Mama were cooking away putting the final touches on the large meal.
“Well if it isn’t this fucker…” said a familiar voice to his left, laughing. Flinn looked over to see his cousin who’s just a year younger than him.
“DeAndre, how are you?”
“Never thought I’d see you again, even since you left. Thought maybe you ‘ood be dead.”
“Nah,” Flinn laughed. “Still very much alive.”
“I can see dat. Wearin’ your fancy suit and all.”
“Yeah I’ve been doing pretty well. Work has been… good. I have a great job at a finance firm in Chicago. Everything has been… Good. Yeah, good. How about you?”
“Now you ain’t goin’ city on us, are you?”
Flinn laughed. “I think I might already be.”
Just as dinner was finishing up, a line started to form and people found a seat wherever they could, be it at the table, on the couch, near the counter, or outside.
“Flinn!” his dad called out. “I saved ya a seat here at the table, kid.”
Flinn took his seat right next to his dad which positioned him right across from Mama. The table could sit eight, and the seats filled in pretty quickly so he was lucky to get one. Besides his sister, all of the oldest family members took the other four chairs.
The dinner itself was mostly uneventful, except for the food of course which was extraordinary. Flinn had not eaten Mama’s cooking, or anything like it in six years. The southern food in Chicago was alright, but nothing like what you can get down here, and no restaurant is going to have the same quality and taste as a home-cooked meal. By God, he had not realized how much he needed this. It was almost healing, like a part of his soul had been lost and he found it once again. The last week had been incredibly overwhelming, and last Saturday he never foresaw being here now, but he was glad he was, regardless of the looming tension. All the stress from work and life back home in Chicago was now all gone. All he had to worry about was… oh yeah, the family drama. The dreaded interactions, what he had suppressed for so long, that had kept him up at night for years. All those long nights doing homework or anything else beside sleeping. They had not been by choice but rather necessity. He would have slept more if he could, and some of those nights he really needed to, but instead was kept motivated by the pain. The pain of knowing no matter what he did, no matter how successful in life he became, he would never be good enough for his family, good enough for Mama, because he left them.
If there ever was a time to clear his conscience and get everything out of the way, it would be today, or at least over the next couple of days. When else would he have the chance? Not that any of this had been planned, and his therapist would probably advise against it. She did not even know he was here. What would she have to say? Avoiding conflict has always been his choice. He has always been quiet, never been at the center of drama, but some things need to be said. Just, maybe not by him. If he waited long enough, perhaps they would come up on their own. So he decided to wait, but he knew time was limited and he could not wait forever.
“Mama, could you pass the butter?”
Mama just stared back at him. “Get ya own damn buttah, since ya can do everything else on ya own.”
Flinn stands up and reaches for the butter. “I can do everything myself, and I have. I hope you’re proud, Mama.”
“Proud? What do I have to be proud of?”
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe my job, my degree, everything I have been able to do to build a good life for myself.”
“I don hear anything worthy of praise.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, Mama.”
“Oh, so now you’re sorry? You could’ve fooled me. Is that how you felt when you left? Unbelievable.”
“I left because I had no other choice.”
“Oh don go lyin’ to me now. You did have a choice. You had a choice and you chose to leave us. You didn’t say goodbye, and you were just gone in the mornin’.”
“If I had not just left, you would’ve stopped me.”
“Cause you ain’t got no reason to go nowhere.”
“I had plenty of reasons to want to leave, and not because of you. I’ve always had dreams, Mama, ya know that. I’ve always been bigger than just this town.”
“Oh, so now you’re too good for us, city boy? Huh? I don wanna hear no more of it.”
“It wasn’t about that, Mama. Look at all I’ve been able to do.”
“I ain’t see nothin’. You never call and you never visit. How am I supposed to know what you been doin’?”
“I thought you didn’t want me coming around any more?”
“Well, you’ve got that right. Glad to see you still have some brains left.”
“Well excuse me. Maybe it's best if I leave again. Sorry I ain’t make you proud, Mama.” Flinn got up and left the table.
Part 3
Just as the early light began to peak through the blinds, Flinn was woken up by a firm knock at his door. “Flinn, may I come in? It's Uncle Terrence.”
Flinn sat up and rubbed his eyes. “Yep, come in.”
“How are you this morning, kid? Ya know, she’ll never admit it, but ya Mama missed ya.”
“I find it hard to believe.” Deep down Flinn knew it was true, but she was hard as a rock, and arrogant. She would always find a way to be right, even when she knew she was wrong, and she would never let you know she knew she was wrong.
“Well, we’re all proud of you, kid.” Flinn hated when Terrence and everyone called him kid. “Just wish yoo’d come around and see us every once in a while. I know ya busy with all the big city stuff and all.”
“I thought no one wanted anything to do with me any more?”
“At first, maybe, but I miss ya, kid. Ya know who missed ya most of all?”
“Pops?”
“Yes, of course. He always wanted to know about ya, every time I’d come round. He couldn’t call, but always wanted me to.”
“I should have called.”
“I think everyone wanted to call, but as time went on, it became harder and harder to push that button. It was already so hard at first, and only got harder.”
“I thought about everyone a lot, especially at first. Leaving was really hard, and I almost didn’t, but I always wanted more. I didn’t want to spend my whole life in this town, and if I had not left when I did I probably never would have. But it was still hard. I wanted to go home so many times, but I convinced myself no one wanted me here no more or that y’all would’ve said ‘I told ya so’ or sum bullshit. No one wanted me around any more and I had left, so I was stuck on the path I chose. And I’m happy, and I’ve done so much, but it’s never been easy.”
“Pops was a lot like you when he was your age. Set on leaving as quickly as he could. Things were different back then, not that they are any better now, but Hank... my brother… Pops, was just like you.”
“What changed?”
“Well, he never did. Just no one talks about it anymore. After what happened on that day, they blamed his behavior. Said he should’ve played it safe and he’d still have his tongue.”
“No one has ever told me the story.”
“And they won’t. It changed the whole family.”
“But you’ll tell me?”
“Only if you promise not to tell. I don need an earful from ya Mama.”
“I promise.”
“Hank couldn’t be confined to Selma, just like you. He joined the army right out of high school, and after he was done in Lebanon, he didn’t go straight home.”
“Where did he go?”
“Everywhere but here. He used the small amount of money he got from the army and went anywhere that would let him in. Across Europe, parts of Asia, Northern Africa, even parts of South America. Of course, a young black man traveling by himself at the time was challenging, but Hank could hold his own pretty well. He still ran into all sorts of trouble. He spent more nights in jail than he would have liked, but he would have done it all again if he could.”
“What happened when he got back?”
“He was much different, but for the better. He couldn’t wait to get back out there again. He had confidence like I had never seen before. That’s what got him in trouble not too long after.”
“How’d he lose his tongue? I’m guessing that is what changed everything.”
“When he got back, he got involved with a girl, I think her name was Susan. She was the mayor’s daughter. They snuck around for a while. Their relationship was not acceptable, especially to her father. If he found out, Hank would be in a lot of trouble, and of course eventually he did find out. He spent about a month in jail in just awful conditions even for the time. They didn’t have anything to hold him on so eventually they had to let him go. About a week after he got out, he was walking downtown and some guys grabbed him. He took him out to a field and tried to lynch him. Luckily, they failed and he survived, but they took his tongue as a warning. He was never the same after that. All of his confidence was gone, and of course he couldn’t speak no more.”
Flinn did not know how to respond. It all made sense now: why the family so desperately wanted him to stay, why they were so hurt by him leaving, and why they’d feared who he was becoming. They were all traumatized and wanted to protect him. They did not want him to suffer the same fate as Pops.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The funeral itself was fairly uneventful and went nearly as perfectly as expected. The church filled in with hardly any empty seats, tears were shed, and speeches were given. Pops touched the lives of almost everyone he met, and they came to show it. After the service was the reception, and yet again, the food was spectacular. Everyone got along just fine today and there was no more residual drama, at least for now. Today was Pops’ day.
After the reception, the family gathered back at Mama’s house for the reading of the will. Pops did not have many possessions, at least not of monetary value, but what he did have was meaningful in other ways. He was very clear on who he wanted to give off, and handpicked what would be most substantial to each person.
Everyone gathered around much as they did at dinner, and the lawyer began his reading:
I, Hank Gerald, a resident in the City of Selma, County of Dallas, State of Alabama, being of sound mind, not acting under duress or undue influence, and fully understanding the nature and extent of all my property and of this disposition thereof, hereby make, publish, and declare this document to be my Last Will and Testament, and hereby absolutely revoke any and all other wills and amendments previously made by me.
The reading went on for some time as there were many beneficiaries. Flinn began to daydream about what could be left for him. Flinn was not a very sentimental person, so trinkets and heirlooms paid him little interest. Perhaps his car, or maybe money. Something that will be useful to him.
To my dear brother, Terrence, I leave my 1964 Pontiac GTO and all tools and parts associated and necessary with/for the running and upkeep of the vehicle.
The further down the list he went, less was given, but this is to be expected. As the end of the list neared, Flinn began to wonder what would be left for him if anything at all. The will had been in order of age, to this point, so he should be up soon.
To my Granddaughter, Nia,...
Nia? She's younger than me… Flinn thought.
I leave her my grandmother’s locket containing a picture of my Grandfather before he left for the Great War. She looked at it everyday to keep the memory of him alive until he eventually returned to her alive.
How could he skip me? Perhaps I should have called, or never left. Flinn got lost in his own thoughts and barely paid attention to the rest of the will. He and Pops were so close, and he never imagined he would be taken out of the will. But that is my own fault, afterall. I left, and I never even care to call. He died, and I never even said goodbye.
Just as Flinn began to accept the consequences of his actions, they got to the last beneficiary listed in the will:
Finally, to my oldest Grandson, Flinn, who is more and more like me than I ever could have wished to have been, I leave my journal. I hope whenever you need the motivation, you read it to find the meaning you are looking for in life.
Part 4
Flinn sat at his desk unable to focus. It was fairly slow for a Friday, but he still had work to do. After a chaotic weekend back home in Alabama, he was ready to settle back into his monotonous routine. The experience had been healing in some regards, but still left a lot unanswered. What did he mean by finding the meaning in life? Flinn wondered as he flipped through the endless pages of Pops’ journal, all filled with endless recounts, drawings, symbols, and pictures from his travels, just as he had since Monday. The journal consumed his whole attention, and nothing else seemed important enough to focus on. He had even ditched his friends all week which he never does.
He is supposed to meet Raheem for drinks tonight, but now he is wondering if he even wants to go. There is just too much in his head right now. He just wants to be alone. 12:37. The clock is moving too slowly. Flinn clears his calendar for the rest of the day and decides to go home.
At home, he still finds himself flipping through the pages of the journal, not even reading them but just looking at them. Again and again, he flips through until he has enough. He drops the journal on his lap and stares off into the distance at the gorgeous view of Lake Michigan. The endless city and skyline take up most of the horizon until it just stops, cut off by the endless ocean-like lake. He stares at it for quite a while until something catches his eye. He has seen this before. Well, of course he has. He lives here and this is his view everyday. But he knows he has seen it somewhere else.
He picks the journal back up and flips through in a hurry. There it is. He holds the journal up to the window to show a matching two-page drawing of this exact view. Well, not exact. It is a slightly different angle, but it was close enough. Pops was here. He would have loved visiting. I should have invited him. This made Flinn sad, and he threw the journal down on the table in frustration.
Just then, that is when he noticed it. There was a page sticking out from the journal, but it was not like the rest. The page was white and pristine, aside from a few wrinkles, as if it was new, whereas the rest of the journal showed its age. He rushed over to grab it. He opened it to find a letter, addressed to him:
Grandson, When you left, I knew that you would accomplish everything you set out to do. I also knew, however, you would find yourself lost someday, returning home for answers. I was hoping I’d be able to give you those answers myself, but as time goes on that seems less likely. I too found myself lost, and I knew not why. I had gone and seen the world, and it changed me, but I was still not fulfilled. I came home still looking for the answers, and it took a while, but eventually I did find them.
Through this journal, I hope to share my findings so that you too, when you are lost, find the answers you seek. Whenever you are ready, follow my journey and the clues I have left for you. Go out and see the world, just as I did. You will find that what you want from life is less than what you expect.
I hope the experiences you have are less harsh than my own, but still be careful. The world has changed a lot, but still not enough. But don’t skip ahead for the meaning may be lost. Take only one step at a time, and when it comes time to take the next step, it will reveal itself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seven o’clock rolls around and Flinn walks into the bar to meet Raheem. He hasn’t seen Raheem, or anyone else from the group, since last Tuesday when he had his outburst. He begins by telling the story of the events of this last weekend, but leaves out the parts about Pops’ past.
"Pops left me a hidden letter.”
“What do you mean?” asked Raheem.
“Like in his journal, I found a hidden letter. It was addressed to me.”
“What did it say, bro?”
“He says he was a lot like me when he was my age. He wants me to go where he went and learn what he did.”
“In Alabama?”
“No, everywhere but there. He wants me to start in Western Europe and follow his clues around the world.”
“He traveled?”
“A lot, apparently. I never knew. He was in the army, and after he got out, he traveled… everywhere, basically.”
“Why did no one tell you?”
“They wanted to keep me safe, I guess.
"They wanted to keep the whole family safe after what happened to him.”
“What do you mean, bro. What happened?”
“I can’t talk about it, but it doesn’t matter now anyways. I’m living a different life now.” Flinn never shared much about his past or his family with anyone, not even Raheem. It has always been a mystery. This was the most he had ever shared with him.
“Well, are you going to go?”
“No, I can’t. I have work. It took too much to get here. I can’t just give it away.”
“It’ll still be here when you get back, bro.”
“If only it was that simple.”
“It can be. You have money saved up. Chicago isn’t going anywhere. We’re not going anywhere. Plus, you’ve always talked about traveling more. Why don’t you take some time to do it.”
“I suppose, but I like my life here.”
“If you don’t do it now, when will you? You’ve taken a leap before, why not take another one. You’re smart, you’ll land on your feet, bro. Besides, your grandfather thought it was important enough to not only give you his journal, but hide you a letter for you to find when you needed it most. Maybe now is when you needed it most. You’re way too stressed at work anyways, and I can tell you’ve been off for a while now. Perhaps some change could give you what you need.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Monday morning, when Flinn gets to work, he walked straight to his boss's office. He turned in his letter of resignation.
Two weeks later, he took the red line to the blue line to O’Hare. Journal in hand, he boarded a flight to Dublin.

A few months were super… not stellar, and I just kind of wanted to hide under a rock so I wouldn’t bother anyone until I could feel a bit more like myself, and with all of that, you guys have just been the sweetest. I got so many sweet messages checking in and felt so loved despite the fact that it’s taken me half a year to get back on here. Thanks for all your patience with me. You guys are the absolute greatest! <3
An additional thanks to u/pinkpengin for sending a card basically inviting me to come back to the cool kid’s table to play this week! :D
Allsssooo also, I wrote half of these in January if any of them are odd, and I’ve also not detailed the cards that have been sent to family members as I didn’t read them myself, just added them on my count here, and sorry if the formatting is a bit wonky. I'm copying this from a document, so I might edit if it's terrible.
To start, I received a fun Meet-Up card from some now irl friends on here! Thank you guys! I really wish I could have made it to this one:
u/lonelytwatwaffle (x3)
u/Jane_Q
u/JaimeKJ
u/kittycatcon
u/babyraspberry (x6), You sent such happy mail with your world postcard day envelope! I love the picture of a beach in Portugal. It makes me want to take a vacay ASAP! I also loved the fun little fact you put about the Peach Springs, AZ USPS! So cool! You also included cute star cut-outs, a little packet of stickers, and washi on what looks like a fun space cat playing card! I’m seriously giddy to get to the pic!
Thank you so much for the sweet hot cocoa and New Year’s card you sent! You also included a pretty saguaro cactus card and lovely pastry scrapbook paper, because you’re so thoughtful like that! I love how pretty every single envelope and card is that you send! I’m also excited to hear that you’re getting settled into the new(er) place a bit more! I hope you had a great time with the family visits!
Oh, my goodness, the wintery cards you sent my way were just stunning! I really liked hearing about your walk on the frozen lake and what an adorable “Cake of Friendship” recipe! The stamp stickers are always just the perfect colotheme, too! It always gives me heart eyes!
u/bluedecemberart (x5), Your Halloween card was adorable! You made it even cuter with the stickers. You mentioned “catching up on mail someday”........... Lol! You sent me about 50 cards to my…. ahem… completely non-existent ones. You’re a treasure, friend!
Thank you so much for my massive care packet of cards in an envelope that was just the cutest, with cats and Totoro stickers! It was beautiful! Every single bit in the envelope was so thoughtful!
You sent a “You’ve Got Mail” postcard, which reminds me… I should rewatch that movie someday so u/comingtogetyoubabs can stop laughing at the fact that I mix up all the Meg Ryan/Billy Crystal movies. I can’t be the only one… or maybe I am?!
You also sent the cutest envelope and added little address cardstock labels to add some zest to my envelopes along with so many cute stickers of cats, dogs, and squirrels! So sweet! I really loved the “Support Your Local Librarians” sticker! We are so lucky to live close to a very nice library with super active librarians who really care about the community, and it breaks my heart that they’re being given extra nonsense to add to their worries right now. :(
I especially love the card that has “You can do anything! Just not Everything” on the front. What a perfect reminder. You are so caring and thoughtful, and I’m so thankful for you!
u/comingtogetyoubabs (x5) How do you always find the perfect cards and things to say?! I love the whole envelope filled with citrus-themed cards, stickers, washi, all of it! Your puns were cracking me up! You even made the address label with little lemons! Super cute!
Then you also sent cards that were bee-related and stickers galore! I’m pretty sure that’s the first cat bee return label I saw in-person! They are adorable!
You sent a fun fall card with such pretty watercolor animals on it! The little hedgie sticker matches perfectly! It’s giving me heart eyes! Thank you, m’dear!
u/constructionlower549 (x7) Ugh, your holiday postcards are always so cute! I love the pic with you and the pupper (both smiling) on the front! It’s seriously so sweet and happy! I also loved the sweet card you sent with the New Year’s plans/updates. It’s seriously been entirely too long since I’ve sent an update! I definitely agree… Christmas is a bit overwhelming for me every year, tbh. I always look forward to the New Year knowing that we’ve made it through another hectic season of cooking/visits/everything! XD I always feel like I drop so many balls and last year was one of the biggest times I’ve done that. I didn’t even send holiday cards last year. :/
What a cool Starbucks postcard! I had no idea they even had postcards, but I love the gold and white on this one! The sparkly purple pen you used on it is just chef’s kiss perfection! Thank you!
I loved hearing about your bday trip! It sounds like such a fun adventure! I know you mentioned you did a lot of HUGE things, but I saw, “hung out by the pool,” and for some reason that part was the bit that I was like, “WHOA! WHAT?! IN FEB?! …living her best life by going somewhere beautiful!” XD
Then I got the most cards (I really, really love the hydrangea ones) with backstories from some of the postcards you sent! <3 I loved hearing about your dog-sitting adventure! Ugh, I need to send you a recipe for ice cream when you’re there next time! It’s blueberry pie-flavored, and it’s basically the only one I make in the summers, though I haven’t made it for a few summers now. I was laughing at the “behind-the-scenes” stories from your trips! It’s so funny catching up with people from school, especially when they’ve become parents! It almost feels like a secret club sometimes, knowing things about them but only discussing it in front of kids basically in code language! XD Oh! You asked at the end… I think the postcard lady would definitely be the highest contender for my demise! Lol! I’d totally take an entire litter of rabid cats over her! :D
u/cswl (x6), Thank you for the lovely Halloween card with the glittery witch skirt and the little cat on a walk! So cute! Our cat actually loves taking walks on his harness, but it’s been too cold to go out with him recently, and our old sweet old man of a dog thinks it’s a bit of a pain to go out on big walks now too. Can’t wait for spring! (I wrote this part of your thank-you in January! Spring has been nice indeed!)
The school supply postcard is so cute! I love LouPaper designs and the little rounded edges! The bright rainbow colors on it is just so happy! <3
Such a great “M” card made out of mustaches, too! Very cool design!
What a cool Veteran’s Day card you sent my way! I haven’t seen very many for the holiday, so it was super fun to get one! Thank you!
I also liked your secret “Walt Whitman” card. I have been wondering how work has been going for you. I have done some “extra” work tidying myself at old jobs when I’ve been feeling less than good about them myself.
It was also fun hearing about the 2 festivals in one weekend… was super happy you didn’t have to cook that weekend! That’s kind of a mini-vacation in itself!
u/DoraDoodle (x4), You sent such a pretty Halloween card as well as such adorable cats in costume stickers! They were so sweet! You even finished off the card with a tiny skull and crossbones stamp on the back. Your attention to detail makes everything so perfect! I always love seeing how you perfectly coordinate the papers to make such nice designs!
We all loved your gorgeous handmade Christmas card! It was displayed with the ones we received from family! I definitely missed out on the fun and didn’t send a single holiday card last year. :(
Oh, my goodness, I loved getting your beautiful watercolor card from your trip. That is actually one of our family’s bucket list places! Were you able to catch the Northern Lights while there? I hope you were treated with a lovely view!
u/ez330 (x4), I loved the colorful tulip card you sent and hearing about what had been happening with you. Thank you for checking in with me! You also included such sweet stickers, one of a corgi cupcake that I absolutely adore! Our dog is red with the cute Dorito ears like a corgi, so I’m a little partial to those types of breeds because of him! <3
Oh, my goodness, how was your trip to the National Postal Museum?! My grandma was a retired postmaster, and I think she would’ve loved traveling there! I hope you had the best time!
I loved getting your sweet flower heart postcard too! Thank you so much for caring and sending notes my way. You’re so thoughtful!
What a gorgeous handmade Valentine’s Day card! The light aqua blue with red were actually my wedding colors, so every time I see them together, it just makes me smile! Thank you for thinking of me! It made my day!
u/isar-love, I loved your dragonfly postcard! I love learning differences in language and I really think “dragonfly” is much prettier in yours! My son has a book about bugs from close-up views, and the dragonfly picture is on the cover! I always thought that photograph was especially pretty! He’s terrified of bugs now, unfortunately, but every time I see a dragonfly now, I think of when he first asked if they were actual dragons as a preschooler, and I thought it was just so cute!
u/Jdoodle7 (x4) Thank you so much for sending such sweet cards my way to check on me! My birthday card was just so pretty, and I really like how you did the washi on a diagonal. It really set off the envelope! You even have birthday return address labels, and I just absolutely adore them!
I have out another card you sent recently, the one mentioning Monty Python! Oh, my word! I am so excited to meet someone who gets my references now! :D Poor E, I had to introduce him to it years ago when he mentioned he’d never seen it (can you believe it?!), but now he grudgingly chuckles or rolls his eyes when I quote it in passing!
u/jvanct88, Thank you so much for the super pretty I’m thinking of you card with a holo cat silhouette! I loved getting the life updates! Just so you know, I can’t use the tea you sent because the little packets are so cute! Oh, they’re in with my tea, yes, but only for showing off the cute designs on display! :) Thank you! <3
u/korewrites (x2), thank you for the postcards you’ve been sending my way! I liked hearing about your travels to visit friends. The place you went in January sounds particularly exciting! I hope you had the best time catching up with them!
u/libertyprogrammer, thank you for the lovely card with the super fun stamps on them! What a good idea to send it before the price increased (again), too! The stickers match the pretty dusty rose color of the envelope and I love how you made the card inside with such cute Snoopy washi! It is so good hearing from you! Oh, I might have mentioned in the last post, but I have finished all of your book recs, and I was absolutely blown away by one series in particular! Kind of bouncing up and down over the fact that a certain author has new author pics!!! Did you see?! I know everyone online is saying not to get our hopes up, so OF COURSE MY HOPES ARE SKY HIGH that we get a new book ASAP! :D I can’t believe there are some people who have been waiting for decades when I’ve only been excited for a few months!
u/LeeElla, thank you for the sweet card with the cherry blossoms and cute washi and stickers! I loved getting to hear about your travels. I feel like my family and I will start doing a small bit more of that this year finally, and I love hearing where others have been!
Also, your writing is lovely!
u/lonelytwatwaffle, I loved hearing about your beach trip! What a nice getaway! My family took trips there when I was little. I think it was maybe the first time I saw the ocean! It sounded like such a nice, relaxing time! I hope you had a blast!
u/mikepenpal6 (x5) I loved your purple Halloween card with the pumpkin and owl! What pretty scrapbook paper in the background, too! You always find the most festive and adorable carding supplies!
What a gorgeous handmade Christmas card! I love how glitzy it is with the little rhinestones and all the cute stickers and washi you used! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Ooh, I loved hearing about the concert you saw! That would’ve been so incredible! I’m super jealous and also really excited that you could go! I saw that one of my faves is going to be about 2 hours away from me very soon, so I went on the ticket site to buy them. E said that I definitely should, but I told him, “Meh, it’d be way past my bedtime.” lol I’m such an old lady now.
Your handmade Valentine’s Day card was absolutely stunning! I always love seeing the cute little gemstone stickers ppl use! I actually didn’t do a ton for this Valentine’s Day. I usually bake for our littles, make them a heart-shaped pizza for dinner, and cook something for E that he likes, but this year, our tiniest got covid (on my birthday! boo!), so we were all sick by Valentine’s Day, and we basically stayed at the house for the rest of the month to make sure we didn’t spread the joy to anyone else. Yuck! I really am glad you were able to do fun things and enjoy the weather with the family!
u/mlks00 (x2), Thank you so much for the sweet Christmas card you sent to the fam and me, especially with the handmade snowflake! How cool! I feel like I haven’t done those in too long. Have you seen the ones you can print online with Star Wars characters snuck into the designs?! They look so cute!
I always love getting your check-ins and updates! I really like this “hello” card stationery too! How classy! I hope you’re doing well, friend!
u/monetmonkey- Oh, what an adorable avocado holiday card! Thank you! Not only that, but you included such cute stickers with a sweet fox and snowy day scene! I loved all of it as well as how you decorated the inside of the card with the diagonal washi. Such a cool effect!
Of course I loved the fun stamps, especially the Maine Coon one! Our kitkat isn’t quite as massive as that, but he’s close, at over 7.5 kg/17ish lbs!
Loved the way you addressed the envelope vertically, too! It really made it stand out!
u/mydinosaurdidit (x8) You sent such happy mail to me last FALL (it’s been way too long since I’ve been here), and it was just so touching that you thought of me for it. It’s beautiful, thoughtful, and I was so taken aback at your generosity! Know that I have it set out for my next project now! I’ve been waiting to make something with it for the summer, and I’m so excited! I’ll send pics when I get it finished! I’ve had a pattern I’ve been wanting to make, but I’ve not had the right materials…until now, and the fact that it’s sentimental is just the cherry on top!
Oh, you gave me ideas for my bullet journal by sending me a sample-type page, and I really like how you have it set up! I’ve been book journaling a bit more lately and still use a bullet journal for my busier months, but I’ve been converting most of the dates to a wall calendar and still using a bullet-style on there for the tasks. It’s so helpful!
What a pretty holiday card you sent with tea and everything! I loved the adorable little paper stars to match the color of the font, and the message made me laugh!
I got the sweetest check-in card from you, typed and everything. It made me a bit teary-eyed. You even included journaling pages and stickers. You are so thoughtful, friend. A few months there were super not super, and I just kind of wanted to hide, and there you were telling me it was okay to just exist. You’re an absolute treasure. <3
Then you sent a kitty postcard with “You’re alive!” on it, and I burst out into laughter! It made me think of Schrödinger's cat, and it just made me ridiculously happy on top of it just being so freakin’ adorable! Thank you, friend!
Such a cool state card you sent! I like the ones with the different flowers/flags/birds on them to see how many I remember from my fourth grade class! :D We visited our state capitol building (where I lived growing up) during school, and the only part I remember was being so nervous that I’d be too loud walking around the halls with the echo-y marble floors… and then I suddenly stopped fretting over that when I realized how slippery the stone made the stairs and imagined falling down them making way more noise than walking funny ever would. XD I was a nervous child… glad I’m not anymore….ummm :D
Thank you for the sweet birthday wishes as well! You handmade a gorgeous pop-up card with a rainbow quilt, and it just blew me away!
The second (!) kitty postcard you made with all the rainbow writing/washi/stickers was just so happy! It made me smile!
u/onelittlericeball (x4), thank you so much for the gorgeous cards you send! I always love seeing your handwriting and the pretty washi/sticker combos you use!
I really liked getting updates on things that have been going on with you lately. It's so nice hearing from you, and I have your latest in my "reply ASAP" stack now!
u/pinkpengin (x7) The fam loved our cute black cat purpley Halloween card! The Halloween donut washi you have is top notch!
Your Jane Goodall Institute card is so cool! She’s one of my heroes (as are you, of course)! I actually bought this little amigurumi book where you could make little feminist icons, mostly because one of the characters is her! I digress… Okay, so as of that card, you had 22 kitters… have there been any more foster fails since then (bc I can absolutely say I’d be such an enabler about that! I nearly got another one myself last month)?
Oh, what a cute little fox riding a bike! I think these notecards are just adorable! You absolutely did not need to write a thank-you, but of course you’re just super sweet and thoughtful like that, and it made me smile! :)
Your sweet holiday card was displayed with the family cards we received this year, and it was so cute! Thank you! We all really enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll get my act together by winter and send some myself this year?! Here’s to hoping!
You also sent such a sweet Valentine with two additional mini cards inside! You are so thoughtful. The envelope was so pretty with how you decorated it! I think Valentine’s Day might be my favorite holiday… I don’t really do anything to celebrate other than baking, but I think that’s maybe why I like it! It’s low stakes! :D
You also sent an extra special holiday card VERY recently… but I’ll be commenting on that one elsewhere. ;)
u/TigerLady13 (x4), I really loved the Christmas card you sent! The stamps were so cute on the envelope, and the Santa in the woods feeding apples to the horses were so just so pretty! Thank you so much!
You have been sending such sweet cards my way! Thank you! My birthday cards were so super sweet. Both were decked out with the cutest washi and stickers galore! You are so very thoughtful! I really like the envelopes! They both had ribbon streamers on the insides of them! How festive!
u/travel4me22, thank you for the fun Blue Ridge Parkway postcard saying hello and checking in! That was so thoughtful! I hope your year has been great so far!
u/umeshufan (x14!) Your pop-up llama card (so cute!) along with an additional note was so cute to get! I really liked the signatures that you and a family member added to it! It was from 15 Nov, so I had the biggest smile reading about a recent event that happened there! <3
The Christmas card you sent made me laugh! I’ve seen shirts with that sentiment on motorcycle drivers, and to see it on the back of a reindeer was just the absolute best! XD You find the most hilarious cards! I definitely need to up my card game!
Thank you so much for the beautiful cards from all your travels over the past 6 months as well as sending notes to other family members! You have been to so many places already this year, and it’s always fun getting to live vicariously through your descriptions of each place!
The NZ sheep postcard is adorable with the little sheep, and I loved hearing about each stop along the way. The “Where’s Wally/Waldo?” one is extra cool! Thank you for sharing it with us! You’re always so thoughtful!
Oh! One of the cards you sent from NZ had another person added to the card, and I don’t know if I’m mentioned, but I think their handwriting is just beautiful! I especially like their A’s! That was so sweet hearing from them as well!
During one of your trips, you were in the same time zone as I was, and I was so excited to get FOUR cards from there! It was so fun getting cards that arrived so very quickly! I always love seeing The Snooty Bookshop cards! They’re hilarious!
You also sent 6 cards just last month, completely putting me to shame! I have them out for a reply just as soon as I pick up some different cards from the store. I think part of my extra long hiatus has made me not want to dig out the perfectly fine old cards I had but start fresh… capitalism at its finest, I suppose… :/
Thank you for sending so many cards to the family over the past half year as well. Your cards always brighten our day! You’ll be getting some replies from E soon, too. He’s not been on RAoC recently either, so I’m adding some of his on my post for him.

2024.04.19 18:56 Electronic_Pie5061 [thank you] many thanks for birthday cards for my son's 10th birthday!!

I had asked for birthday cards and postcards for my son's 10th birthday and he received a good amount! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
u/travel4me22 - thank you for the handmade outdoorsy and fishing card! He LOVED it! He told me what kind of fish he thought it was (some type off bass...)
u/sufficient_letter883 - wow - your card had some amazing stickers to decorate - camping lanterns, tents, skis, fish, s'mores! All off his likes <3 He also enjoyed the postcard you tucked inside - he says that he wants to ski, bike, and hike Mount Rainier now.
u/davister97m - Alaska is on our list off places to visit! Logan also caught his first salmon last fall! Fishing season starts NEXT WEEKEND here and he is eager to catch another one, now that we know the perfect spot ;)
u/TyeDyeAmish - he LOVED your fishing pole and hand-drawn fish! Thank you!!
u/keqani - awwww we loved the cat postcard!! Logan also told me the message was for me, too <3
u/HaikusbyKA - Oregon is on our list of places to check out so we're saving your card for hiking inspiration!!
u/Elley_bean - thank you for the birthday card! I *believe* you may have sent stickers too? If so, thank you! Logan took all of the extras from the cards out so I can't remember who sent what :)
u/xinthetic - wow - just wow!! Your package put a HUGE smile on Logan's face! Your really went above and beyond. It came the day before his birthday and he was overjoyed - he just kept pulling item after item out of the package. Your kindness really made a 10yo smile. His favorite was the keychain/zipper pull that he has now repurposed into a bookmark :)
And I have one card that I don't have a username to - please let me know if you sent this so I can update for your flair. It has a peanut playing soccer and it says "Footy Nut it's your birthday" :) So cute and we got a great laugh from it <3

2024.04.17 23:32 kittiemomo Found this while unpacking after moving recently.

Found this while unpacking after moving recently.
I wrote a fan letter to the Buffy team in the Fall of 1999 after Season 3 of Buffy just finished and before Angel premiered. I remember this window of time because I remember asking Joss in my letter if AtS was really happening, lol.
12 year old me thought that each of the cast members had signed this postcard specially for me, but 37 year old me now realizes that the autographs on the back are just printed, lol.
My family was poor. I could never afford any Buffy merch, so this was the closest thing I had to Buffy merch growing up. I've moved 3 states and in and out of countless addresses in the past 25 years, so I'm glad that this has stayed in such good condition over the past 2 decades. I've kept it in a photo frame all these years but I don't display it. It's usually tucked away in a box somewhere. Almost forgot I had it.

2024.04.11 23:50 NobleClimb My hometown has a killer local legend; our morgue is full of people who wouldn't listen to "Wrong Way Ray."

Every town has its local legends. Few, I expect, are as deadly as the specter haunting the false summit of Pinetale Peak. But the seductive stories from the rare survivors kept a steady stream of pilgrims attempting to follow in their footsteps.
When the local rescue team could no longer keep up with the broken bodies piling up in the couloir, the Sheriff posted a deputy at the trailhead to search hikers for the contraband needed to perform the ritual.
On that particular morning, it was deputy Gloria Riggs standing by the footbridge. Even in the pale blue pre dawn light, I could spot her camera-ready hair and makeup; more politician than peace officer. She held a chunky flashlight in one hand, the other beckoned, expectant. I slipped my pack off my shoulders and passed it to her.
“Any whiskey in here?” She asked as she rummaged through the bag.“No ma’am.”
“Ouch. Thought I’d be a ‘miss’ for at least another few years.”
I chuckled.
“You’re not trying to see him, are you Max?” She knew me. Town was like that back then.
“No, miss,” I lied.
“Wouldn’t blame you, being curious,” she zipped one pocket shut and moved on to another. “My cousin got some advice from good ‘ole Ray. ‘Bout ten years back. Professor down valley at the college.”
“I take it he wound up on the rocks?”
Gloria shook her head. “Worse. He got exactly what he was looking for. Headed west with his girlfriend with a crazy dream about a catamaran. Not so much as a postcard.”
“Sounds like Wrong Way Ray told him exactly what he needed to hear.”
“He died at sea, shipwrecked somewhere near the Philippines.“ She thrust the bag into my chest with more force than necessary. “If you do see him—take his advice with a grain of salt. He’s not called Right Path Paulson, ya dig?”
The skin of my stomach was starting to sweat against the cheap plastic flask I’d tucked behind my belt buckle. “Thanks for the warning. But really, I’m just looking to see the sunrise.” “Uh huh. Safe hike, Max.”
The hike was safe — by Summit County standards — so long as you had sure footing and a good idea where you were going. Raymond Paulson had neither of those things on the day he scampered out onto a traverse to nowhere and fell 500 feet to his death.
According to the local weatherman, the pre-dawn fog would’ve kept Ray from seeing more than a foot in front of his face. But the toxicology report, combined with an empty liquor bottle found unbroken in the man’s pack, led the coroner to a different, non-weather related conclusion.
All of this probably would’ve been written off as an accident, if hikers from Kerristead didn't believe in ghost stories. Turns out, Ray wasn't blind, dumb, or suicidal; and he'll tell anybody who will listen.
I whistled my way up the meandering switchback, bordered by the gabions and felled trees employed by the trail crew to halt the progress of erosion. Trees became bushes, then wildflowers before yielding to the petrified hay commonly found poking out between chunks of scree.
Someone had stacked a pile of bigger rocks into a semi-circular windbreak, wrapping around the summit survey marker. Shadowy suggestions of the surrounding peaks loomed in the limited lighting, poking above the cloud layer like islands in the sea. Sunrise would come soon. I dropped my pack, sank into the sheltered alcove, and closed my eyes.
"Hey brother. Got anything to drink?" Asked a gruff voice.
My lids flew open. Sitting beside me was a stranger wearing a faded flannel shirt, tucked into a well-worn pair of baby blue jeans. The mullet poking out beneath his ball cap looked a little like the fat, fluffy tail of some enormous squirrel.
Wrong Way Ray, in the flesh.
His question was the first step in a loosely choreographed dance, deduced through dozens of failed interactions.
"Hope you like bourbon." I passed him the tiny flask, from which he took a greedy swig. Only bourbon worked. Blake tried with Gin and said the apparition spat it out before vanishing.
"Thanks, friend." He passed the flask back, now significantly lighter. "What brings you up here?
I shrugged. "Looking to get some clarity, you know?"
"Couldn't have picked a better place. Nature does that." Ray leaned back against the rock, folding his hands behind his head. "What's on your mind?"
I spoke slowly, feeling every syllable. "I have an opportunity that's eating me alive. A big new job. Fancy one, out East in New York City. Pay is great. It'd be huge for my career; chance to make a name for myself, ya know?"
He gave a polite nod. "So what's the problem?"
"Problem is, I'd have no friends, no family... living in some shoebox a hundred miles from the nearest real mountain."
"I see. You're worried you'll miss it. This." He gestured to the world around us.
"Nah, it's more than that. Sometimes I think this is who I am... and wonder who I'd be If I leave." Ray folded his arms and pondered this for a moment. "Can I ask, what's so great about the New York job? I mean, are you unhappy where you are?"
"No, it's fine. I can get by. I just wonder if this would offer me more..." I held out my hand like I was reaching out for a word not quite within my reach.
"More Money? Status?" Ray scoffed. "It's okay to not give a shit about stuff like that. I sure as shit didn't. Everyone's got different priorities. Then again, I'm just a dirtbag adrenaline junkie, living out of his car. At least I was, before--well, you know." He chucked a stone over the edge. It clattered once, twice, then was lost to the void.
Was? He couldn't possibly mean... "Do you know you're, well—"
"A ghost, yeah. Used to really rustle my jimmies."
"What?"
"Being dead. 'Specially when everyone thought I killed myself." He furrowed his brow. "You wanna know how I really died? Lemme show you."
He grabbed my arm with a firm hand, effortlessly pulling me to my feet and leading me toward the edge. Had I said something wrong, or missed some crucial step in the scribbled journal entries?
Would he throw me off? Was that what happened to the other hikers?
"Look out over there." He pointed out from our vantage point. I squinted, confused. In the blue-gray light, a knife's edge traverse rose and fell from below the cloud floor like a sea-serpent, ending in a pointed spire. It looked a little like a rattlesnake's tail. "That's Pinetale Peak. The real peak. Hard to find your way when the trail dips down into the clouds. Standing on the top is like looking down from Olympus. Partner told me it was stupid to do without ropes. We didn't have any. I didn't care; just had to see it.
"On the way back, I got turned around. Slipped right off the edge and... well, seems like you know the rest." Ray sniffed, and wiped his nose with the back of his hand. "I remember how it felt. Whose name I screamed on the way down."
He cleared his throat. "Still an unbeatable view if you need to see the world from the top."
I was so focused on the feel of his hand at the small of my back, I didn't realize he was waiting for a response. I looked from Ray's expectant face, to the narrow path before me, leading to a spire backlit in gold. I raised one leg, about to step forward, then paused.
What was wrong with the peak I already stood on?
"Maybe..." I stammered, "Maybe I've climbed high enough. Maybe I'm okay right here." The hand against my back pulled away, taking a profound weight with it.
Ray was gone, but his message was clear.

2024.04.10 00:03 NobleClimb My hometown has a killer local legend; our morgue is full of people who wouldn't listen to "Wrong Way Ray."

“Any whiskey in here?” She asked as she rummaged through the bag. “No ma’am.”
He’s not called *Right Path Paulson*, ya dig?”
The skin of my stomach was starting to sweat against the cheap plastic flask I’d tucked behind my belt buckle. “Thanks for the warning. But really, I’m just looking to see the sunrise.”
“Uh huh. Safe hike, Max.”
The hike was safe — by Summit County standards — so long as you had sure footing and a good idea where you were going. Raymond Paulson had neither of those things on the day he scampered out onto a traverse to nowhere and fell 500 feet to his death.

Forget the bodies -- I wonder how many dreams died on that mountain, too.

It appears that we do not have any cemeteries out there to account for the dead as they relate to various historical time frames. Sure we could go with cremations, and some other modes of riddance of the dead bodies. At the same time we pay the due respect to our dead, and we have places to show for it. Why don't they?
It's up to the reader to decide whether our distant ancestors were ignorant enough to not pay proper respect to their dead loved ones. For those forum members who live in some very old cities - what is the oldest cemetery in your neck of the woods? Catacombs of Paris 6 million skeletons Some 200 miles of labyrinthine tunnels are believed to exist. Despite the vast length of the tunneled, underground world, only a small section of it is open to the public. This tiny portion (under 1 mile), known as Denfert-Rochereau Ossuary, or more popularly, “The Catacombs,” has become one of the top tourist attractions in Paris.
I think that the story of the Catacombs of Paris is as suspicious as it gets, in reference to the number of dead people we are presented with. Where could six million skeletons come from by 1780? Let us look at the narrative compliant version of the issue at hand.
Catacombs of Paris - Wikipedia
The Narrative: The Catacombs of Paris are underground ossuaries in Paris, France, which hold the remains of more than six million people in a small part of a tunnel network built to consolidate Paris' ancient stone mines. Extending south from the Barrière d'Enfer ("Gate of Hell") former city gate, this ossuary was created as part of the effort to eliminate the city's overflowing cemeteries. Preparation work began not long after a 1774 series of gruesome Saint Innocents-cemetery-quarter basement wall collapses added a sense of urgency to the cemetery-eliminating measure, and from 1786, nightly processions of covered wagons transferred remains from most of Paris' cemeteries to a mine shaft opened near the Rue de la Tombe-Issoire.
The ossuary remained largely forgotten until it became a novelty-place for concerts and other private events in the early 19th century; after further renovations and the construction of accesses around Place Denfert-Rochereau, it was open to public visitation from 1874. Since January 1, 2013, the Catacombs number among the 14 City of Paris Museums managed by Paris Musées. Although the ossuary comprises only a small section of the underground "carrières de Paris" ("quarries of Paris"), Parisians presently often refer to the entire tunnel network as the catacombs.
Essentially what we have is an old, no longer existing cemetery called Holy Innocents' Cemetery. It got overfilled and the dead bodies spilled into the streets of Paris. Authorities had to act, and they allegedly did by moving skeletons to the catacombs. Under the reign of Philip II (1180-1223) the cemetery was enlarged and surrounded by a three-meter-high wall. Les Innocents had begun as a cemetery with individual sepulchres, but by then had become a site for mass graves. People were buried together in the same pit (a pit could hold about 1,500 dead at a time); only when it was full would another be opened. The Holy Innocents' Cemetery is a defunct cemetery in Paris that was used from the Middle Ages until the late 18th century. It was the oldest and largest cemetery in Paris and had often been used for mass graves. It was closed because of overuse in 1780, and in 1786 the remaining corpses were exhumed and transported to the unused subterranean quarries known as the Catacombs. The below illustration allegedly pertaining to 1550s, was done by Theodor Josef Hubert Hoffbauer who was born in 1839 and died in 1922. This guy has a lot of works, but I was not able to find a single image of his face. Yet, the existence of this "Holy Innocents' Cemetery" is supported by his below painting. Nothing knew there, I'm afraid.
The Holy Innocents' Cemetery, c.1550.
Holy Innocents' Cemetery allegedly was established in 12th century and got closed in 1780. The dead were moved to the stone quarries below the streets of Paris. Today the quarries are known as the Catacombs of Paris. Did this "Holy Innocents' Cemetery" exist in reality? I do not know, but we sure do have a lot of skeletons in the Paris Catacombs. To me, it looks like there were a whole bunch of people occupying this square simultaneously, and they all got buried by some liquid dirt. Paris Population I will refer to the article titled: 16th century Paris: Size vs. Population. You judge for yourself whether 205,882 people per square mile in 1572 is a feasible number. The most populated city of today, which is Manila, has only 107,561 people per square mile. I personally thing that either these numbers are BS, or the true size of the city of Paris in the 16th century is not being revealed to us.
1572: 350,000 people in 1.69 sq mi
 For comparison, this 1878 San Francisco had approximately 230k people living there. The size of 1878 SF was no less than 20 sq. miles (today SF is ~49 sq. miles).
When considering 350,000 people per 1.69 square miles, one has to take the following into account: Crap at Versailles. Like, literally. Frock Flicks Fornication, fluids and faeces: the intimate life of the French court 17th Century Hygiene Or The Many Smells Of Versailles… KD: Basically, just like I said above, we are either not being told about the true size of the city, or the population of Paris in 1550s was under 50k. Barring the existence of 40 story skyscrapers, I do not know how it's possible to accommodate 350,000 people within 1.69 square miles. When we factor in that there was no known sewer system in place, the numbers sound even more ridiculous. It's not like Earth was overpopulated back then, right? At least officially it was not.
6,000,000 skeletons where from? Now, when we have the weird city population issue out of the way, let us talk about the alleged 6 million people who were transferred to the Paris Catacombs. The overwhelming majority was moved from the Holy Innocents' Cemetery, which existed from the 12th century to 1780. Let us take a look at the Paris population by year: year 29BC: 29,000 year 1000: 20,000 year 1200: 110,000 year 1250: 160,000 year 1300: 228,000 year 1340: 300,000 year 1400: 280,000 - Losses of the Black Plague. year 1500: 200,000 - Losses of the Hundred Years' War. year 1550: 275,000 - Renaissance recovery. year 1594: 210,000 - Losses of religious and civil wars. year 1634: 420,000 - Spectacular recovery under King Henry IV and Richelieu. year 1700: 515,000 year 1750: 565,000 You gotta love this "spectacular recovery", and "losses". What could be hiding behind these numbers shenanigans?
Once again: The Holy Innocents' Cemetery is a defunct cemetery in Paris that was used from the Middle Ages until the late 18th century. It was the oldest and largest cemetery in Paris and had often been used for mass graves. It was closed because of overuse in 1780, and in 1786 the remaining corpses were exhumed and transported to the unused subterranean quarries known as the Catacombs. Think about it: Under the reign of Philip II (1180-1223) the cemetery was enlarged and surrounded by a three-meter-high wall. Why bother? No really, why would they build a 10 foot wall for something like this in 1200s?
 As you can see, the Cemetery is located smack dab in the middle of Paris. It's like if there was no available room anywhere else back then.
Guess where the alleged 50,000 victims of the 1347 Black Death go to? Yup, they got buried in the middle of Paris. Why they would keep all those Plague contaminated corpses in the middle of the populated city bits me. I thought those were transported outside of the city limits and covered with bleach or something. Our scientists say that plague-ridden corpses are no danger: There's a common belief that dead bodies pose a major risk of disease, which leads to a lot of hysteria during major epidemics. This is mostly a myth, studies have found. Question: Anyways, taking the above Paris population numbers into consideration, how do we get 6,000,000 dead people? Even if they had 250,000 people dying in Paris every 33 years for 500 years straight, we would only end up with 4,500,000.
Nice "lil" holes, aren't they?
From a slightly different perspective, we have well preserved, similar looking skeletal bones, and skulls. Some of the skeletons were supposed to be 500 years old, and some only 10 or so, yet they all look the same. It's like bones do not fall apart, when in reality they clearly do. Additionally, the skeletal remains displayed in the Paris Catacombs look polished and treated.
KD summary on the Paris: With this interesting Holy Innocents' Cemetery no longer in existence, I will allow myself the following set of speculations: All these people died at the same time. This is why all the bones are in the same place and in a very similar condition. The dead could represent a "reset". Whether they are Mud Flood related, or victims of some "plague" chemical attack remains to be determined. With under 1 out of 200 miles of tunnels being available to public, we cannot be sure that we only have 6 millions of skeletons down there. What if the numbers are 200 times that? We have no idea what exact time period these dead pertain to. Inspection générale des carrières The Inspection générale des carrières (IGC) is the organisation which administers, controls and maintains the mines of Paris and catacombs of Paris. It was founded by royal decree of Louis XVI on 4 April 1777 as the 'Service des carrières du département de la Seine'.
Department of General Quarry Inspection, aka General Inspectorate of Quarries still exists, regardless of the above Wiki page only going to 1911. There’s also the issue of contemporary maintenance because, although the Inspectorate still exists, it works in a very different way. Rather than preserve and reinforce the structure and integrity of the underground quarries as has been done for centuries – with additional limestone pillars and walls – today holes are drilled down from the surface and filled with concrete. Since the quarry networks were made forbidden to public access in the 1950s, I think historically, Parisians have wiped them from their memory. Essentially, due to the danger posed by the cavities, allegedly created by the Ancient Romans, historical evidence is being filled up, and sealed with concrete. Nobody needs to see what's down there.
KD: What other 1775-1777 dates do we know? I don't think all this is a mere coincidence.
Other Places Brno Ossuary Brno Ossuary is an underground ossuary in Brno, Czech Republic. It was rediscovered in 2001 in the historical centre of the city, partially under the Church of St. James. It is estimated that the ossuary holds the remains of over 50,000 people which makes it the second-largest ossuary in Europe, after the Catacombs of Paris. The ossuary was founded in the 17th century, and was expanded in the 18th century. It's been opened to public since June 2012.

Sedlec Ossuary "Bone Church"
Putim Ossuary The ossuary, a small, unassuming building of a clay-brown hue, was first erected in 1741. Tucked in a cemetery behind the town’s medieval St. Lawrence Church, it contains the skeletons of what are believed to be the remains of fallen soldiers from the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Later, in 1829, a minister named Ondřej Zloch carefully laid out the collection of bones and skulls that you can still visit today.

Monastery of San Francisco Catacombs Beneath the church at the Franciscan Monastery in Lima, Peru, there is an ossuary where the skulls and bones of an estimated 70,000 people are decoratively arranged. Long forgotten, the catacombs were rediscovered in 1943 and are believed to be connected via subterranean passageways to the cathedral and other local churches.
Convento de San Francisco Ossuary I could just keep on going, but need to save room. I did not specifically look, but here is a link: 10 Ancient Mass Graves We've Only Recently Found Additional Instances Archaeologists have made a spectacular find on Berlin's Schlossplatz: during excavations on the grounds of the former city palace, they have found the remains of thousands of people. The bones are now to bring insights into Berlin in the Middle Ages.

The postcard below, which comes from the Burns Archive’s death-focused photography collection, shows three such soldiers standing on a 30-foot deep pile of skeletons at Colon Cemetery. At the time, the price of a grave at the cemetery, which was founded 22 years earlier, was $10 for five years. If, after this period, the family of the deceased didn’t pay up for the remains to stay buried longer, the skeleton would be dug up and its bones piled onto a big heap in the ever-growing boneyard.

Government Rules I do not know what rules are in place in other countries, but here in the US we have this Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. By default, no other but Native American remains (bar crime scenes) could possibly be situated within the United States. Native they could be, but how did they die? Mass Grave Found in California Reveals Prehistoric Violence Against ‘Outsiders’ In the United States, when remains are located, everything is stopped. If those remains are deemed to have historical properties (not a crime scene), archaeologists move in, and do what they do. What do they do?
KD: Well, as usually, we have what we have, and we don't have what we don't have. Where are the multiple old cemeteries which are supposed to be in great abundance. Where are the 1 century cemeteries as they pertain to some historically old cities? Why only 0.4% of the Catacombs of Paris are available for public inspection? Sure there is a safety issue, but who's there to say that we do not have a billion people neatly stacked up along the passages? How do we explain bizarre 6,000,000 Paris skeletons for the 1200-1780 period. How do we explain the state those skeletons are in? Why the stone quarries allegedly excavated by the Ancient Romans started to all over sudden collapse? When were they really built? What's up with this practice of placing the dead inside various catacombs? Did the involved authorities agree upon this common practice? Why 1400 - 1634 time period in the life of Paris looks so strange, as far as population numbers are concerned? Could these piled up skeletons be Mud Flood or Reset related? Pretty sure the questions could be numerous. Above are just some of the ones I have. Feel free to voice your opinion.

And there waiting for me outside the dollhouse was Figaro, who crashed into me at full speed and tackled me to the ground with two paws to sniff at my face and then proceeded to drown me in tiger-fox saliva.
Well, this is lovely, is what I thought briefly before I wrapped my arms around one of the cub’s paws and said, “My sweet baby! Where have you been?”
As the joy of seeing my tiger-fox faded for a moment, I raised an eyebrow wondering where the sudden enthusiasm came from.
Oh, right. Glamored me to make me more motherly toward her, I thought. You absolute stinker. . . my sweet little innocent can’t do anything wrong stinker. Fuck!
It was only then I noticed a small bed set up under the table the dollhouse stood on, round like a doggie bed and sewn from a plush orange fabric. There were even a couple of dolls inside. They looked like dog toys, little wool figures in the shape of piskies.
“Who set all this up?” I asked, looking up at Barsilla. She stood by the front door of her house but refused to make eye contact with me.
“Barsi? Did you do this?” I asked.
She turned toward me and snapped, “What the fuck did you just call me?”
I smirked.
“What? Barsi? I think it’s a cute nickname.”
“I will feed you to our queen’s ravens if you call me that again, prison— um, Anola,” she stammered before going inside.
My cub chortled in the way foxes do, the queerest giggle imaginable. I couldn’t help but catch the infectious laugh, walking over to the creature that was the size of a fully grown lion to me. Wrapping my arms around her snout, I whispered, “Barsi set all this up while I was gone, didn’t she?”
The tiger-fox chortled again.
As good a confirmation as I’m going to get, I thought, rubbing my hands under her chin and sighing.
“What on earth did you get yourself into while I was gone today? Did you. . . have a bath?” I asked, realizing her fur was much softer than before and smelled like cotton candy.
Figaro gave a little yip and spun around slowly, showing off the sleek shine of her red-striped fur.
“My, my. I didn’t realize we had a fashion model over here,” I scoffed, rubbing the right side of her face when she leaned down again.
I stayed with my furbaby for another few minutes before looking up at the dollhouse. Barsilla had left the front door open but went inside so I couldn’t ask her to fly me up to the table.
“Can you toss me up?” I asked, and Figaro lowered her snout to the ground. I climbed on, trying not to fall on my ass. To her credit, the cub waited until I was crouched, hands gripping her rubber-like nose to steady myself.
The tiger-fox gave a yip and flung me up into the sky. My stomach sank briefly as the air rushed by my face and rustled my hair and dress. And before I knew it, I’d landed delicately on the dollhouse’s front porch step. It was the perfect momentum and arc.
“Damn, Figaro. You’ve got amazing aim,” I called down, and the tiger-fox rose to her upper legs for a moment and gestured toward me with her paws.
My heart ached with the sweetness of her move before the cub retreated to her bed and curled up in a ball, nose tucked under her tails.
I found Barsilla getting ready for bed, and it didn’t take me long to join her, the warmth of her body drawing me in like a moth to a — you know what? I’m suddenly a little more sensitive to that phrase given my new life as a piskie. She drew me in. Let’s leave it at that.
And where I expected to lie back-to-back after introducing a nickname that was apparently too embarrassing for the queen’s left-hand lady to endure, she instead surprised me.
Barsilla scooted close and gently ran her fingers down my wings and shoulders in a soothing pattern. Shivers ran through my spine but also my dragonfly wings as I felt them for the first time like pieces of my body. I didn’t know how many nerves sat inside the wings, but Barsilla’s touch lulled me deeper into her orbit. I began to feel like the blankets and pillows were pulling me down, and a serene buzz filled my mind.
It was strange recognizing the wings as additional appendages to my body instead of just pieces of a costume that I couldn’t take off. Barsilla’s stroking of them seemed to light up bulbs in my head that went dim the moment Sylva locked my soul in this body. I almost felt like I could move my wings. Almost.
For the first time since coming to Faerie, I was very aware of them. And it was all because of Barsilla’s touch.
“You wouldn’t know this being a former mortal, but stroking the wings of another piskie is about the most intimate gesture we can share, perhaps even more so than fulfilling our carnal desires,” Barsilla said in a soft tone.
“Uh. . . huh,” I said, my mind drifting in a sea of bliss under a sunny sky filled with puffy white clouds.
She continued to stroke my wings, and I might have actually made a cooing noise. Somewhere in the back of my subconscious, I heard Sierra chanting, “One of us! One of us! One of us!”
I’d make sure to slap that werewolf the next time I saw her just in case.
And that was one of the last coherent thoughts I had as Barsilla brought her index and middle finger together along my wings, running down the length of the appendage.
“Fuck me up,” I mumbled, as pins and needles ran from the tips of my wings down to the base.
Of course Barsilla knew exactly what I needed to calm down. She’d been doing things to this body for decades. It’d been her territory for all-purpose pleasure longer than I’d been alive.
“I need you to just lie there and listen while I say some things, and I knew this was a surefire way to make sure you wouldn’t be snarky or flippant.”
All I could respond with was another soft sigh. Maybe I said Barsilla’s name. It was hard to remember.
“Anola, I. . . I’ve been hard on you since you arrived here. I treated you harshly, and deep down, I think I wanted to pay you back for crimes committed against my heart by the last person who wore your face.”
My heart clinched even if the rest of my body was nearly incapacitated with waves of soft pleasure. It responded to her every touch with nothing less than obedience and a request for more.
“Sylva was the only woman I’ve ever loved, you see. I knew her before Queen Varella came into my life. We grew up in the same garden, born just a few tulips away from one another. That’s how piskies come into the world, you see. We’re born of flowers. And where we die, small gardens typically appear for a little while.”
Another involuntary cooing noise escaped my lips, even if a tiny portion of my mind wanted to be taking notes.
“When Varella snatched me from the web of a hungry spider-like fae, I immediately owed her a life debt. For reasons that have never been clear to me, Varella brought me to Featherstone and made me her left-hand lady. Sylva came with me for a while. The queen ensured she would have a place here with me in my home. And I helped manage the queen’s day-to-day affairs.
“At first, things were great. Living in the palace was safer than living in the faewilds where thousands of piskies die every day, the same as bugs do in the mortal realm. And no one is any the wiser. But somewhere along the line, Sylva grew bitter. I never found out why. She just bailed on me, leaving a note behind, saying she was going to find that fucking book. I guess the fact that you’re here shows she eventually did.”
I muffled another noise of pleasure as I listened, my heart shaking all the more violently for Barsilla. I didn’t know shit about being a fae. But I knew a thing or two about being left by a pretty girl you imagined a whole future with.
Barsilla had a pretty good pattern down now, running her fingers over one wing and another. And I remained helplessly wrapped in a cocoon of euphoria, unable to even really move. I could barely keep my eyes open.
Shit. This really is intimate, I thought, finally taking stock of how my body reacted. I couldn’t imagine any other woman I’d been with doing this. Of course, before my wedding, I couldn’t imagine having wings. But that was neither here nor there.
This moment felt like it was just for the two of us, and I drank it down greedily. Personal attention, Barsilla lore, and a fucking wing massage? Sign me up. Twice.
“I was so very bitter when Sylva left. Her actions showed me that what we built together was worth less than a dusty old book. And that I, by extension, was worth less than a dusty old book. To add insult to injury, it was a book nobody believed still existed. . . if it ever did in the first place. Someone pulled the plug in my tub, and I drained along with the bathwater. Down the slurping swirl and into those black copper pipes.
“I guess to keep from losing any more pieces of me, I threw everything I had into my debt to Varella. The power and authority she trusted me with became my worth. What I did for the Raven Queen became my whole identity. And then you came along, pulling my heart out of the drain, covered in gunk and hair.”
Trying not to finch at the image, I sighed again.
“So, yeah, I wanted to put you under my boot for a while, even if you were completely innocent of Sylva’s crimes. I told myself I didn’t care because you still wore her face, the face I’d kissed more times than I could count. I expected you to react furiously, and instead, you went and offered to stay here with me.
“You being mad at me would have made it easier to hate you in turn and keep punishing you for breaking my heart. But no matter how hard I tried to break your heart, you only managed to put mine back together. I’d forgotten how much I loved being needed and being able to fold a girl around my fingers like clay.
“I’m sorry for how I treated you, Anola. And if you still want to stay. . . well, that’d make me happy. Tell me about the girl who wears this face, what makes her giggle, how many times she’s dreamed of the future, and why she chose to remain here with me instead of trying to run back to her old life.”
Was I crying? I wasn’t aware if I had enough mental awareness to sense whether tears were running down my face. But my heart was gushing now, the stream spilling over a beaver’s best dam.
“I was awful to you, sweeting. And then those dire crocs almost killed you, and my heart threatened to break again, right after you’d finished putting the damn thing back together. It shouldn’t have taken me almost losing you to realize your worth. You, as Anola. Not as the piskie that flew away with my heart.”
“Gods, Barsilla,” I finally managed to whisper in between shivers. She hadn’t once let up on my wings. “I’ve only been here a couple of days.”
She finally stopped stroking my wings long enough to lean down and gently kiss my neck, just above the collar.
“We’re fae, Anola. Time means nothing,” she whispered before pleasuring me again. “And everything.”
I lost track of time drifting between wakefulness and slumber as she continued. Steady. Never tiring. Never stopping. Just making sure every ounce of stress and anxiety from the croc attack in the throne room was gently dropped from my body like raindrops off the stem of a flower.
Eventually, my body hit an equilibrium, and I found the will to speak. Though I confess, it felt like trying to line my keys up with the lock on my door after getting home from the bar. Every ounce of effort I could must went into the activity, as though I were disarming a bomb.
“Listen, Barsilla. None of the women I was involved with in my mortal life stuck around for the length of time Sylva did for you. But I know what it feels like to have an imagined future with a beautiful woman just before she vanishes from your life. I know how it feels to sit in a cold bed, wondering what you could have done differently to make her stay. I’ve cried those tears. I’ve spurned those bitter moments. I’ve screamed. I’ve torn photos. All of it.”
She stopped and allowed me to slowly roll over to face her.
“You know a thing or two about being abandoned and crying out into the night wondering why you’re never good enough for her to remain,” she said quietly.
I pulled her into my arms as her purple braid finally came loose, straight hair cascading over the two of us.
We giggled as I pulled a few strands from our faces, which were mere inches apart now.
“I won’t make the same mistake Sylva did, Barsilla. And it was a mistake. One you didn’t deserve to endure,” I said, my heart hammering like an enthusiastic carpenter who just joined a union.
The piskie buried her face in my bosom so I couldn’t see her expression when she spoke.
“Call me by that name again.”
I raised an eyebrow and bit down to avoid asking something stupid like: are you sure?
Running my fingers through her hair, I whispered, “Barsi. Oh, Barsi. Will you give your heart one more try?”
She muffled a chuckle of amusement against my breasts.
“Ana. I will, Ana. You alone make my heart fly.”
We smiled and lay together, basking in the magic of naming one another. Special names. Secret names none but us could utter. And just before I drifted off to sleep, Barsilla asked, “Did you notice your wings twitching?”

2024.03.26 03:11 Stepdada-87 I divorced my wife to support her daughter.

Burner account because I want to remain separated from my ex-wife and she knows my main. This is going to be a long one since I feel like I'm reevaluating my entire relationship and value system so sorry for the long vent, I'll add a TLDR at the end.
I (53m) married "Debbie" (55f) 6 years ago. We were both divorced and had been single for a while. In my case I had a lot of trust issues after my first wife cheated on me and then proceeded to put me through the worst experience of my life by dragging a divorce process of hell just to try and create drama. That's a story for another day tho. Debbie on the other hand was completely abandoned by her husband and left to raise her daughter "Maxine" (18f) by herself only with the help of her parents.
Because of this traumas on our previous relationships we were both very hesitant to open up to new people and found solace in different things, I buried myself in my work and Debbie dedicated herself to her local church and motherhood.
We met 8 years ago through a mutual acquaintance who thought we would be perfect for each other and we took things slowly but it was clear from the moment I saw her that I was in love with her. She was insecure about introducing a man into Maxine's life which I understood so, although our relationship was sailing like crazy we respected each others boundaries especially in regards to Maxine.
About six months into our relationship she invited me to her church to meet her friends and family and, of course, her daughter. I was nervous but more than anything excited for this big step in our relationship. I was not religious in the slightest myself but have no quarrel with spirituality or people who believe and Debbie knew and respected that. The meeting went great and everyone seemed to welcome me with open arms, particularly Debbie's parents, who I came to learn later were very worried that their daughter was a single mom.
Maxine took to me cautiously, she was shy but polite and looked at me with curiosity but hardly said a word. I respected her approach and instead of launching at her and trying to bond immediately with her I gave her as much space as she wanted to approach me on her terms. This worked and eventually she warmed up to me.
Fast forward a couple of years I asked Debbie's parents and also Maxine permission to marry Debbie. They all gave me an enthusiastic encouragement and Maxine told me she was so happy that I could now live with them.
For the next few years I feel like we had the perfect life. I didn't mind not having children of my own because Maxine was my daughter for all intent and purposes and Debbie and me we were so happy in our routines, we never fought, we only had slight disagreements sometimes that were so easily settled that I truly felt like we had it all figured it out.
Maxine on the other hand began to worry us a few years back. She seemed withdrawn and apathetic most of the time. We suspected she might be depressed and we kept trying to talk to her and had her go to a therapist but saw little improvement. There were days where she was just that happy little kid she had always been and then the next days she seemed anxious and jumpy with that being followed by long periods of her moping in her room. I though perhaps the quarantine had affected her and she was having trouble adapting to getting back out there or it was regular teen moods, perhaps more enhanced but her mother and I we were both worried.
Six months ago it was Maxine's 18th birthday and we wanted to plan a big party for her and all of her friends and family and her mother even offered the rec room at the church to throw a big shindig. However Maxine asked us if we could have a small dinner in some nice place, just the three of us, her mother was disappointed, but knowing Maxine we knew this was more her style of celebration so we took her to a nice restaurant.
As we waited for our table and then sat she seemed nervous ,her eyes were red and puffy like she had been crying and she looked pale as a ghost to the point where we asked her if she was feeling alright and if she'd rather go home. She said no and before we could try to get another word in she interrupted us and said "I'm gay."
We were both shocked because we hadn't expected this but before any of us could say anything Maxine broke down in tears and I moved to her side of the table to comfort her and hug her telling her "It's all right" like when she was a little child and she bruised her knee. Debbie however was looking at us mouth agape in horror and asked if she was serious to which Maxine managed to let out a yes between her sobs. Debbie then let out a groan like I had never heard before, I saw that she was crying too which shocked me much more than anything. The situation was out of control and everyone in the restaurant was looking at us so I just told them to go to the car and leave.
Debbie kept saying "This can't be happening" over and over and Maxine kept apologizing. I tried my best to tell Maxine that she did nothing wrong and that we'd talk in the morning. Once at home my wife ran to our bedroom and Maxine to hers and I followed my daughter, I tucked her into bed like when she was little and tried to comfort her and tell her that I loved her but she was still crying and asking about her mom. Honestly I didn't know so I told her things would clear up in the morning.
I have been reflecting on that night every day since it happened and I can't for the life of me understand how my wife reacted the way she did. I knew she wasn't particularly understanding of the LGBT community but she had never been openly homophobic at least that I could recall and I just didn't know how much hatred she had for them until that moment.
In our bedroom she was in the fetal position sobbing in our bed. I hugged her and asked her if she was alright. She said no and that she failed and her daughter was a disgusting d-slur that would go to hell unless we did something. Everything she said in this speech made alarm bells turn on in my brain. I told her there was nothing wrong with Maxine and she was not going to go to hell and the only thing we had to do is love her and support her. We got into the worst fight we've ever gotten into and she kept trying to tell me that the "liberal media was trying to poison her daughter to be groomer" and other bullshit like that. She was hellbent on her decision to try and force Maxine back into the closet.
The most hurtful point came when she told me that I was not her actual father and I had no say in the matter and that she would deal with her as she saw fit. I realized then that perhaps I didn't know the woman I was married to, our life was just a postcard of the perfect life I had always wanted, sure we never argued, but we never really talked either, I knew nothing of her or her views. And knowing that she didn't even considered me family made me realize in an instant that I actually I meant nothing to her.
I spent the night on the guest room not being able to sleep but resolute to get a divorce. My only concern was Maxine. I wanted her to be safe and I didn't want to lose contact with her, I still saw her as my daughter.
I was startled in the early morning by the sounds of screams in the kitchen and ran to see what was going on to see my wife berating and insulting Maxine calling her a pervert, a freak, mentally ill, slurs and many other things. Maxine was crying and asking her mother to please don't hate her, that she had tried to change but she couldn't.
I got between them and told Debbie to shut the f up. I had never before used that language with her and she was stunned so she quiet down for a second. I told her that her behavior last night and the things she told me proved to me she was not a good person and since she didn't consider me part of his family I wanted a divorce. Debbie began screaming at me and directed her wrath at me but I turned to Maxine and told her that I was packing some things and going to a hotel, if she wanted she could come with me. She looked at me for a second and said yes.
Less than an hour later we both left the house to the sounds of my wife's screams and threats, with our phones being spammed by family members and churchgoers telling us we were every awful thing one can imagine. On the ride to the hotel Maxine told me she imagined her mom would not be accepting and that's why her girlfriend advised her to come out in a public place and only after she had already turned 18. I was surprised to know she had a girlfriend. Maxine also told me that she wasn't sure what my reaction would be but that she was so thankful that I was standing by her side. We both cried on that ride.
The next months were a terrible upheaval. The divorce from my ex-wife was a disaster she contested everything I ever laid on the table and accused me of turning her daughter against her, stealing from her, abusing her and even of turning Maxine gay. Eventually things got settled but it took a toll on my mental health.
As far as Maxine goes she is still living with me and I met her girlfriend, Samara, a lovely young lady that goes to the same school as her and helped her go through the trauma of coming out without a support system. Luckily Samara's family is very open and has accepted Maxine with open arms and even myself and they invite us to their family reunions and potlucks almost every week and we are now doing much better.
As far as Debbie goes we are going no contact but we've heard that she maintains that Maxine is living a sinful lifestyle and that I, by enabling her, have stolen her daughter. A couple days ago I received a letter saying I would pay for my sins. It was unsigned but if it wasn't from Debbie herself it's from someone in her church circle. I'm still mourning the life we had together but more than anything I'm kicking myself for not realizing what kind of person I was married to.
TL.DR: My step daughter came out to my wife and I on her 18th birthday. Her religious mom had a breakdown and accused her of being a sexual pervert and called her slurs, telling her that she had to change in order not to go to hell. When I realized what kind of person my wife was I asked for divorce and took my step daughter with me to be safe from her religious mother who is now accusing me of alienating her daughter from her.
