2024.05.08 04:47 VaLhAlAs_ Unrealized (and bizarre) film project.

Background: In 1994 the controversial documentary "Crumb", about the American cartoonist Robert Crumb, was released in theatres and gave Lynch an opening credit as the presenter of the film (he liked what he saw and knew that by adding his name it would get more publicity). If you haven't seen it then you should because it is a fascinating watch.
Anyway, a prominent person in the film, as you will remember, is the reclusive and articulate older brother Charles, the first cartoonist of the family who struggled with mental health issues and "homosexual pedophiliac tendencies" (Charles' words) which inhibited him and left him shacked up in his childhood home until his suicide at the age of 49 in 1992, which deeply shocked the director and in a 1994/5 interview, he said “I was devastated when I learned Charles committed suicide because I loved that guy and was hoping to make a film with him--I think he would’ve been an incredible actor,” Lynch says. “I loved his predicament and the way his work showed how he ended up in that bedroom, and the film does an amazing job of giving us an idea of what goes on in that mind. This is one of the best films I’ve ever seen about how artists actually work, and it’s a story of a family like I’ve never seen a family.”
This interview really sparks my imagination about what he had in mind for the film, and I was curious what this community (of which I have been a long time fan) thinks about this unrealized project.

United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights: A/HRC/55/73: Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 - Advance unedited version ["After five months of military operations, Israel has destroyed Gaza. Over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 13,000 children. Over 12,000 are presumed dead and 71,000 injured, many with life-changing mutilations. Seventy percent of residential areas have been destroyed. Eighty percent of the whole population has been forcibly displaced. Thousands of families have lost loved ones or have been wiped out. Many could not bury and mourn their relatives, forced instead to leave their bodies decomposing in homes, in the street or under the rubble. Thousands have been detained and systematically subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. The incalculable collective trauma will be experienced for generations to come. By analysing the patterns of violence and Israel’s policies in its onslaught on Gaza, this report concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating Israel’s commission of genocide is met. One of the key findings is that Israel's executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally distorted jus in bello principles, subverting their protective functions, in an attempt to legitimize genocidal violence against the Palestinian people."] (March 25, 2024): https://www.ohchr.org/en/documents/country-reports/ahrc5573-report-special-rapporteur-situation-human-rights-palestinian

2024.05.07 04:03 Raeorshine I have questions

Hello Point Roberts,
Can I ask a few questions and get some verification and feedback?
First, how environmentally focused is PR? I've read some of the governing documents online from the past, and from that reading, I have the impression that it is a priority that the natural resources making Point Roberts the gem it is are to be preserved and protected. Would this also be an accurate viewpoint for most of the full-time residents?
I understand that buying land and building in PR will require much patience and perhaps importing someone and paying them a lot extra because contractors and builders have already been booked for over a year or are generally scarce. True?
Can you tell me about septic systems and water hook-ups? I read that finding someone to install septic systems is less problematic. What about water? Would adding a water harvesting and water storage system be something to consider? Does anyone use solar, thermal, or wind to produce more off-grid electricity?
Two properties are currently on the market on Gulf Rd. One is vacant land zoned partially commercial and partially residential, and the other has several rental units. One dream scenario is to buy both and keep the rental units as is for now since there is a shortage of long-term rentals in PR (correct). On the other parcel, we would like to add a food resource for the community and also build a house or put a prefab on the acreage behind it; the prefab because of the difficulty of building.
The food resources we have in mind could be a small grocery store specializing in healthy organic foods, a vegetarian-forward cafe, or Mexican food with vegetarian options. These ideas are mainly because those are the things I would miss most and would need to travel over the border to access them (I am pretty sure). Would the community welcome these ideas?
Another idea is to buy one of the large forested land parcels (52 acres, and there are a couple of 20-acre parcels) currently on the market and create a small artist retreat, wellness retreat, or combination (our passions). For obvious reasons, we'd keep the forest as intact as possible, use sustainable building practices, and run the business sustainably. Would these ideas be welcome?

2024.05.07 03:55 shadowlarx The Sting (1973)

The Sting (1973)
After his friend and mentor is murdered by a corrupt Joliet cop (Charles Durning), young con artist Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) heads to Chicago and seeks out veteran grifter Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) to learn the art of the big con and to get even with the mob boss (Robert Shaw) who killed his friend.
This is probably the finest film about con artists I’ve ever seen and I would say it’s the best Redford/Newman film ever if I hadn’t already seen them as Butch and Sundance. Still, the pair are in fine form here. They’re joined by a solid supporting cast of screen legends, including Shaw and Durning but also Eileen Brennan, Harold Gould and Ray Walston. I love a good story that keeps you guessing and this story does exactly that, keeping you trying to figure out the con right up until the big reveal.

2024.05.06 16:36 VVasabij Artists combining sculpture with performance art?

Dear hive mind,
I'm currently doing some research on Anna Uddenberg. She's a swedish artist based in Berlin who does a very interesting combination of sculpture and performance art in her more recent works. She designs the sculptures herself and exhibits them solo, but there are also occasional performances in which the performers interact and kind of merge with the sculptures.
I'd like to know if you can think of any artists with similar approaches regarding the combination of sculpture and performance art. I didn't really come across anything similar yet, but I want to be sure I'm not missing anything. I think sculptural works that relate to the human body in an ergonomic way that compares to what Uddenberg does would be helpful as well. I know Robert Morris also refers to the body in his work, but I'm looking for sth that maybe has a bit more similarity in its aesthetic form.

2024.05.06 07:23 EslerPrinn [Heavy spoilers] Trying to sort out all the confusing references and mysteries of Alone In The Dark (2024)

Sorry this is so long. I'm trying to cover a bunch of details and got really autistic about it. This is my take on what seems to be going on in the Alone In The Dark remake, both overtly and behind the scenes. Mikael Hedberg really went all out and threw in a bunch of esoteric stuff that is hard to follow, even if you've read all the literature (and there's a lot).
A few bits and pieces here and there, like the Perosi/Pregzt connection, are just conjecture on my part, so if you have an alternate take let me know. Please also let me know if you can tell me what the hell is going on with Grace in Emily's playthrough. Why does she slap Emily and order her to "learn her place, little girl"? Why did Emily even think the Carnby mask looked like her father? Why did Grace jab Emily with a syringe? What is up with that ENTIRE 'Jeremy is a boat now' section?
Anyway, the overarching story - TL;DR Essentially, several of the inmates at Derceto say they aren't there to be cured, but simply to be forgotten. This works on two levels. They don't just mean forgotten by their families and by a society they don't fit into, but also from an author's perspective. The NPCs are fighting the story itself and it's meta shit all the way down.
Quick recap: the original game (AITD1 1992, written and directed by Frederick Rayner) the cursed manor Derceto and its owner, Jeremy Hartwood, are haunted by the Dark Man (Lovecraft's Nyarlathotep). Jeremy kills himself to escape it, and his death prompts either Emily Hartwood or Edward Carnby to enter the Derceto with instructions to investigate the piano in the attic. They find that they cannot leave, and the mansion is overrun with undead horrors and monsters (and a killer ashtray which I'm very sad did not make it into the remake).
The boss is the immortal pirate Ezechial Pregzt a.k.a. former slave-owner Elias Pickford, who does the Dark Man's bidding and has bound his soul to the giant tree inside Derceto mansion. Emily/Carnby burn the tree, dispelling the curse, and flee the mansion with their skeletal chauffeur (also sad he didn't make it into the remake). AITD1 takes place in the same universe as the Call Of Cthulhu games, and the plot is full of stuff from Lovecraft and other authors.
In this new re-imagining, Jeremy chooses to live (with an apology to Frederick Rayner), hoping that the story might be re-written to allow for him. And it is, changing not just the present but the past. Pregzt no longer has a connection to Derceto and seems to have merely founded a shipping company during his pirate days. The slave-era Derceto plantation was owned by someone named Harriet Pickford, before becoming an artists' colony in which all the artists disappeared mysteriously. Derceto is now an asylum for the rich owned by Dr. Grey, and Jeremy allows himself to be committed in hopes of keeping the Dark Man contained.
At some point Elisabetta Perosi, member of the missing artists' colony, arrives from the past. I believe it's no coincidence that she has the same initials as Ezechial Pregzt, and is associated with pirates. She seems to be Pregzt's replacement in the story, but while the malevolent Pregzt happily allowed evil to control him, Perosi fights it just as Jeremy does.
As a writer, Perosi has the power to influence the story, and vows that she will see the Black Goat of the Woods (Lovecraft's Shub-Niggurath) burn along with Derceto. If she is indeed associated with Pregzt then it makes sense that she would wish the tree burned just as it was in AITD1. She and Jeremy were very close, and he mourns her deeply after she is (presumably) killed by the Dark Man.
(more on Perosi at the end of the post)
Unfortunately, the other characters at Derceto also had their own stories rewritten to accommodate Jeremy, and are not happy about it. A few were mentioned in AITD1 in very different roles, but their new role in Jeremy's story is to rot there along with him, forgotten by an uncaring author-god and caught up in Derceto's evil. They are unhappy, and they want a re-write.
Cassandra is also an author with the power to re-write the story - in fact she has written the entire story "leaving no room to breathe" and it's her version that is narrated to you over the course of the game. It ends with Carnby, Emily, and Jeremy all quietly leaving Derceto. The other NPCs are left behind, unhappy and forgotten... but alive. Juan suggests in Cassandra's lagniappe: "Perhaps you tried to save them from themselves and that is why you had to die". Perosi seems to be the stronger writer though, as it's her ending and not Cassandra's which comes to pass in the default ending.
Each year the asylum NPCs have a ritual where they "pray for better times to come". They wear papier-mache masks resembling AITD1 Carnby, made from a novelisation of AITD1 (seen in Grace's prologue), and pray to the tree which served as the seat of Derceto's power in AITD1. This tree also has the same VA as Cassandra the author, suggesting that it too has the power to shape stories. But the NPCs lack the power to influence it. Affected by the Derceto curse (which makes inhabitants worship an outer god disguised as a fertility god), they kill Cassandra and resolve to contact a greater power.
To thwart them, Jeremy makes the pact with the Dark Man which ensures that the story will never continue so long as he never becomes sane. This seems to give the Dark Man greater control, as he uses his Nyarthalotep powers to warp time and space inside Derceto. The other NPCs have had enough of Jeremy's shit. Led by Lottie and her brother, they force new words of power out of him to summon the Black Goat of the Woods.
When Jeremy is lobotomised in a heavy-handed metaphor that makes him sane (kinda) by stabbing his madness in the face, it ends the terms of the contract and severs his connection to the Dark Man. The overjoyed NPCs prepare for the ritual. Dr. Grey is fine with the status quo and hesitates to change it, possibly because his role here is largely the same as AITD1 (Jeremy's doctor) and of course he owns Derceto in this story. But the others are adamant that "We need to move forward" and "we've been waiting for so long".
Carnby remarks that Grace is not supposed to be here, and she agrees that he is correct: she is from AITD2, not AITD1. But Jeremy's story has dragged out over several years now, so the events of AITD2 (which began with her being kidnapped and Carnby sent to find her) never actually happened. This may be why she is chosen as a sacrifice, and why she is able to choose a new ending for herself by smashing the AITD1 talisman. But the sacrifice fails and the ritual is cursed. The Derceto NPCs get their new endings... but they're all bad endings. Derceto and the Black Goat burn just as Perosi wanted.
In the Carnby ending where the ritual succeeds, Ruth actually *does* get a good ending. Maybe the other NPCs do too! Maybe it all really would have worked out if the story-hogging protagonists hadn't ruined things by insisting on being heroes and having a heroic boss fight. Aside from, y'know, Grace dying and the elder god returning and such.
Some additional observations:
The presence of the Pallid Mask in the lagniappe also ties Perosi to The King In Yellow by Robert W. Chambers. The lagniappe lore references an excerpt at the beginning of chapter 2: The Mask (which in turn references Poe's Masque of the Red Death). In The Mask itself, several living beings are turned into stone statues by an artist, which might suggest that the missing artists are in fact the humanoid stone figures on the landing at Derceto. Perosi writes: "no more Derceto, which means no more pirates. May you sail forever until you reach the shores of Hali", perhaps choosing to sacrifice them as Jeremy has chosen to sacrifice the Derceto asylum inmates. Hali is the lake by the city of Hastur in the alien other-world of The King In Yellow.

2024.05.06 04:19 JGar453 Folk rock haul at the mall

Folk rock haul at the mall
My love for John Wesley Harding is kind of what actually makes me a bit of a Dylan-head beyond just liking his protest, electric, and Rolling Thunder era work. The stripped back sound is really groundbreaking in its own way and probably had a big effect on a lot of country rock artists. His writing is so subtly brilliant on it, All Along the Watchtower not even necessarily included in that assertion. It's a dark deeply ironic album full of contradictions in theology and American folk culture. In a way he does return to his original protest format but they seem like deconstructions.
I've heard Robert Johnson's complete work before on some different compilation but they're all pretty interchangeable comps to be honest. The songs are simple delta blues numbers but they're infectious and it seems like I've heard every chord progression on it before by someone he probably influenced. His vocals are also super fun - you can see what Robert Plant and Dylan got from it.
I'm on my Neil Young kick. Met him through After the Gold Rush, really started swooning on Rust Never Sleeps, loved On the Beach. So I picked up this one - his breakout record. Also stellar. Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand are definitely among the greatest jam songs of all time.
I've not heard Songs from the Wood but I did like Thick As A Brick and it was only $7.

2024.05.06 00:54 MarkMamdouh3343 My very personal list

My very personal list
I made a previous list of films that I love very much, I consider them to be the best. I included films like The Godfather and 12 Angry Men, which I consider to be the best. In fact, they are almost better than some films. This list is from my point of view, but this may be a more personal list. They are films that had a profound impact on a personal level. They may not. It is the best but it is the closest to my heart
I chose each of these films for several reasons:
Crumb :
This film is the most personal film for me on this list. It deals with the story of Crumb and his brothers and how art was a means of survival, a way to remain sane. Art as a tool for psychotherapy and venting hidden and deep feelings and the intense sexual obsession that pushes me to the edge are things that reflect my personal experiences in my teenage years, where I used drawing like this to vent the intense sexual repression that was inside me. Expressing internal matters, no matter how ugly, despicable, and obscene they are, in an artistic form is a very healthy thing. I believe that Robert Crumb’s free and bold expression of his desires and thoughts in his works made me more reconciled with myself, more self-aware and honest. Most of Robert Crumb's art is able to liberate and give salvation to those who share the same thoughts and desires. This film is the most honest film I have ever seen.
Eraserhead:
This film is the best arthouse film ever from my point of view. This film consists of raw and abstract feelings and thoughts without impurities or confusion. It seems as if cinema was invented to make films like this film. The eraser head uses the film medium of sight and sound in the most brilliant form possible. This film captivated me. The first moment I heard about him, saw the poster, and read about him, but when I witnessed it, I fell in love with David Lynch’s ability to express his feelings and thoughts, feelings of fatherhood, feelings of helplessness, and heavy responsibility without words, but only with a strong image and sound engineering that may be the best ever, in my opinion, presented by David Leitch in this film. The best directing in the history of cinema. This film is like a great artistic painting from the Renaissance era in which you feel an entire flood of emotions in it. And like a classical musician, you feel every pleasurable feeling in every note that the orchestra knows. This is the film. Feelings are felt through sound, image and movement. This is the art of cinema at its finest!
A clockwork Orange :
I think this is the most film ever that made me think, to think about things such as the concept of freedom of will and the nature of justice. The film does not hesitate to deal with these ideas, but rather pushes them to the maximum possible limits to a degree that may be confusing to many. It is a very bold film, not because it contains nudity and violence, but rather because it boldly addresses these Ideas .This movie makes us sympathize with a very evil character like Alex and makes us ask the important question: Does Alex have the right to have freedom of choice, even though this freedom will make him choose to commit such heinous crimes? But all of these things are not the only things that made me love , this movie is Very captivating and very enjoyable. The wonderful photography, the great music of Beethoven, the great dark humor, the décor, the innovative costumes, the fast pace and the clever details. It is a very attractive movie. Malcolm McDowell’s acting performance in this movie is, in my opinion, the best ever. This movie, in all its details, testifies to the genius of Stanley Kubrick. What a great movie!
The shawshank redemption :
It is a movie that made me love cinema at a young age. I love watching this movie over and over again. The movie gives a feeling of warmth and many feelings. I love the last third of this movie. It gives a feeling of comfort and calm. With the wonderful photography by Roger Deakins and the beautiful music by Thomas Newman, this movie is a comforter in times of pain. Watching it makes you feel like... A heavy weight was lifted from my shoulder. The last moment of the movie is perfect. Andy and Red embrace. The beautiful blue sky and sea and the gentle music. What a perfect feeling.

8 years in the works.
Thanks to the deck I was finally able to sink the time into The Witcher 3 and finally finish the game. Being able to get 1-2 hours in on flights and on the go was absolutely amazing. Convenience is invaluable.
My backlog of unfinished games is getting smaller. Onward to Fallout 4!
To think this is the first real generation of these handheld gaming PCs. Looking forward to the power these devices will have in the future.

Saint Gervais
Launched in 2005 as part of the special 250th anniversary pieces, the Saint Gervais is in my opinion one of the coolest watches Vacheron Constantin has ever made. It merges technical know how with bold design elements. Made in only 55 platinum pieces in a 44 mm case (including a unique model with black dial sold at the Quarter Millennium auction held by Antiquorum in 2005) the Saint Gervais owes its name to the Cabinotiers established in the historical Saint-Gervais district, the cradle of grand traditional Geneva watchmaking, close to the brand’s historical headquarters located on the Quai de l’Ile.
Housing the fully developed inhouse calibre 2250 (450 parts), the Saint Gervais, other than a tourbillon and perpetual calendar, features an incredible 250 hour power reserve visible on the dial by double 125-hour segment indications, each winding down in turn. This may not seem impressive today but close to seven years ago, in 2005 very few brands were reaching such long power reserves and it was the only watch at the time with a perpetual calendar and tourbillon to have such a long power reserve. This extra long power reserve is obtained via 4 coupled barrels (2+2). In fact cal 2250 has a power reserve of over 270 hours but has a stop system at 250 (the brand’s age at the time) to avoid any loss in amplitude and accuracy.
The designers at one point had wanted to make the case in 100% platinum (platinum used in watch cases contains 95% platinum and 5% of either iridium or ruthenium) but as Christian Selmoni Vacheron Constantin’s Artistic Director says “the 100% platinum case was like butter, almost impossible to mill and too soft”.
The Saint Gervais, even if technically over shadowed by the Tour de l’Ile’s 16 complications remains for me an incredibly strong and enigmatic watch. Where the other 250th anniversary watches were a homage to the brand’s traditional crafts and expertise the Saint Gervais was a taste of things to come with more daring and ambitious designs.

Tour de l’Ile
THE Vacheron Constantin which best represents the 250th anniversary pieces and at the time the world’s most complicated timepiece with 16 complications.
Made in 7 pieces between 2005 and 2007, a special unique black dial version was sold by Antiquorum at the VC 250th anniversary auction on April 3 2005 for CHF 1,876,250 making it the most expensive modern wrist watch to be auctioned!
This piece of superlative horology features: a tourbillon, minute repeater, power reserve indicator, perpetual calendar, calendar, moonphase, 2nd time zone, sonnerie level indication, equation of time, sunrise, sunset, celestial chart and sidereal time
Creating a timepiece with indications on both sides of the case was no easy feat, especially since the team wanted to maintain legibility and wearability. It took 4 years (2000-2004) for the constructors at VC to develop calibre 2750 (834 parts) requesting over 10,000 hours of R&D.
How do you create a super complicated watch that can remain elegant, refined and which can be worn comfortably on the wrist? This was the first obstacle the case designers confronted.
The fact that the movement was 36mm in diameter was not an issue. However the 11.25 mm thickness and the fact that the watch was to have indications on both sides almost made Vincent Kaufmann, VC’s Director of Design, to pull out his last remaining hairs in frustration.
The first satisfying volume of the case in terms of equilibrium would have been largely over 50mm, and this is without counting the lugs! But this was impossible as the objective was to have a wearable watch. The team created different models using stereo lithography to finally reach a compromise considered as optimal: 47mm diameter and 17.8 mm thickness.
This type of size can be found in modern watches which are either targeting the sports watch segment or those wanting to make a spectacular impression. For the Tour de l’Ile, Vacheron Constantin was to create a classical watch which – as much as possible – was to remain discreet!!!!
To reduce the impression of thickness, the designers came up with a curved case as to prevent the “tuna can” effect. The case is also divided in three distinctive parts: the knurled bezel and case back plus the main centrepiece.
The second difficulty was the implementation and form of the lugs. To have equilibrium they needed to occupy the major part of the case side without having straight lines which would have given an impression of weight. Soldered to the case and representing 1/4th of a Maltese cross and being both concave with ingoing angles they were particularly difficult to make and could only be hand finished.
Thanks to its construction which integrates all elements –movement and case – the watch does not look like a cake with different stacked layers. It is comfortable to wear and its proportions are harmonious. The Tour de l’Ile was the first watch from the anniversary pieces to be designed and all the others were directly inspired from it and integrated its aesthetic codes.
Other than the case construction another challenge had to be met: placing 7 corrector pushers, a crown as well as the repeater slide! The classical position on the case side was impossible due to the correctors. That’s why it was decided on placing the repeater slide on the bezel which needs to be turned to activate the repeater.
The WIS is often fascinated by the technological prowess of grand complication; the dial is a natural prolongation of this as well as being the “face” of the watch.
In the Tour de l’Ile 12 hands indicate the majority of the functions. The aesthetics needed to make these indications legible and uncluttered.
The top dial features the hours and minutes, the tourbillon cage, the power reserve indicator, the 2nd time zone, and the sonnerie indicator as well as the moonphase. The back dial features the calendar functions, the sun rise / sun set indications as well as the equation of time. 6 hands are necessary for these indications. The celestial chart representing the Northern Hemisphere is placed on the bottom part of the dial.
One of the first objectives of the team in charge of the dial was to create a sober aesthetics especially with regards to the tints and varnish used. Only 2 colors are present on the dial: silver of the dial and blue underlining the different complications. The hands are also blued steal. The time telling hands are in pink gold like the case.
The sky chart representing the sky as seen from the Northern Hemisphere featured on the back dial was added far down the movement development and was included...6 months before the unveiling of the watch!!
Initially, the tourbillon was to be visible from the back, however considering the thickness of the movement and the additional mechanisms the aesthetics were not satisfying. The engineers and constructors submitted the idea of filling the “hole” with a sky chart and they managed in a few weeks – in collaboration with the Geneva Observatory – to create this new complication.

Esprit des Cabinotiers
When rumours started going around on what Vacheron would be presenting for its quarter millennium anniversary surprisingly they related less to a wrist watch but to a one of a kind clock that would be breathtaking. However it was impossible to learn more as this seemed to be the best kept secret after the formula for turning steel to gold!
The question was how might Vacheron Constantin unite its quintessential values within a unique and supreme object that would represent the ultimate expression of its 250 years of know-how?
The team at Vacheron Constantin wanted to create something unique, creative and completely out of the box.
The answer given to this question by Vacheron Constantin is called L’Esprit des Cabinotiers. Its name, referring to the Geneva watchmaker-craftsmen who used to work under the rooftops. eloquently embodies an approach focused on the quest for technical and aesthetic perfection.
This awe striking masterpiece consists of a golden sphere engraved by hand according to the sky chart drawn by Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), geographer to King Louis XV of France and author of two large globes, one celestial and the other terrestrial. The sphere is composed of eight petals symbolising the lotus flower and which opens progressively means of an extremely sophisticated spring mechanism.
The idea of a globe opening to reveal the mechanical insides came to the team after visiting a fantastic exhibition which had taken in place at the Kugel gallery in Paris in 2002 on the Art of Celestial Mechanics (scientific instruments and clocks).
The engraver of the sphere was found in France and is one of the last artisans capable of doing such work. He isolated himself in his workshops for over 4 months refusing to take calls from the brand and accepting any visits, finally delivering his work (to Vacheron’s great relief) a few days prior to the presentation of the clock to the press! He even lined the floor of his workshops with cushions just in case the pieces he was working on would fall on the floor (the sphere itself weighing 3.5kgs of gold)!!
The creation of the “engine” of the globe was entrusted to François Junod who is certainly the world’s most talented android and automaton maker. To set the globe in motion one needs to press a hidden button at the base of the clock, the pink gold sphere slowly opens up like a flower, and unfolds its eight petals, while a central telescopic cylinder raises up the timepiece nestling at its heart via sixteen small connecting rods, tiny sapphire balls and articulations.
One of the difficulties was to find the correct power and torque as for the petals to neither open too slowly or too rapidly. However, this open/closing motion does use a lot of energy and after every 2 utilisations the spring needs to be rewound.
The overall effect is ethereal, mysterious and poetic. The transparency of the glare proofed sapphire crystal provides ideal visual access, from the front as well as from the sides. The gold and steel structure discreetly houses the function correctors, while two tiny holes drilled through the sapphire crystal on the back of the clock serve to wind the mechanism by means of a key concealed within the base
The making of such a big circular sapphire crystal was in itself quite a feat and special tools needed to be created and research and development was undertaken.
For the anecdote, the movement ebauche of this masterpiece dates from 1934.
Once the petals have unfolded, the eye is attracted to the harmony of the beautifully guilloche dial which has a 10 cm diameter with the same motif as the other 250th anniversary creations. It took the guillocheur over 4 days to finish the hand engine turning of the dial. To give you a feeling of how important the surface is, once the centre of the dial was finished the engine turning tool needed to be replaced and as the guillocheur states it’s the first time he had encountered this in 50 years of practice.
The Esprit des Cabinotiers other than the traditional hours and minutes features a central dead seconds hand and displays a second time-zone on a small central subdial, topped by four horizontal apertures in a harmonious in-line perpetual calendar, hour and quarter repeater function on request and the power reserve appears in a counter at noon
But that’s not it!
All these indications are framed by the hand-engraved minute circle, itself surrounded by a circular zone that is perhaps the most poetic feature of all: an astronomical calendar depicting the position of the sun in each zodiac according to the Gregorian calendar. The twelve signs of the zodiac are superbly enamelled using the exquisitely grand feu enamel painting method.

2024.05.05 15:01 ibid-11962 Movies and Adaptations [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #2]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused on Future Publications, though it skipped over the future projects which aren't really books. This installment will therefore focus on Movies and Adaptations, including of course, the Disney+ Eragon adaptation that is currently being worked on. The next post will focus on In-Universe Lore.

Movies and Adaptations

Low Budget Movie
I actually haven't spoken about this part publicly. I have this sort of bee in my bonnet that I've wanted to do for years, which is I want to try to write and direct a low budget film, there's a lot of talent here in the area in Montana where I live, and it's something I've always wanted to do, and I kinda of figure I'm at the age where if I don't try to do it it'll never happen. The barometer as to whether or not this happens will be entirely as to whether or not I can write a script that I'm happy with and that other people would be interested in helping make. If I can manage to write a script that works then I'm going to give it a real shot, if not I'll go back and write another book. [1]
What is your next goal? I want to continue to challenge myself as an artist. I want to write the stories that matter to me. I also want to focus more on filmmaking. I want to shoot, produce and direct a low-budget film. [24]
It's very interesting that one of the first storytelling books that comes to your mind is the Robert McKee one. I've always been fascinated with film and I would love to make film at some point. I might actually make a real effort in that direction this year, we shall see. The thing is, we didn't have television reception growing up but we would rent movies and we would watch a film every evening with dinner. We did that for years and years and years. I have seen a lot of movies. In films, if you read scripts, scripts are almost entirely structure and outline. They're a plan, a guideline for the story that is to be made into a film. [28]
Etsy Merch
You don't happen to sell bookmarks on your Etsy, would you? I'm in need of a few bookmarks and would love some Alagaësia or Fractalverse themed ones. Ha! We’re actually going to have some up in the nearish future. [T]
TTRPG
If you were to create a game of Eragon or any of your other books, which book would it be and what would be the winning state of that game? Well, the funny thing is I've been developing a tabletop RPG for the World of Eragon. And I'm currently waiting to hear back from a publisher if they want to move forward with it or if we need to find another home for it. The slight difficulty I've had, the reason it hasn't come out sooner, is that Disney and Fox already owns the merch rights for the World of Eragon. So we can do a rule book and we can do other stuff, but we can't do figurines or some other stuff. So it's a little tricky. But Eragon was the natural answer for me to develop that world and to not do a D&D based system, but to come up with a completely new game engine based around my ancient language and the rules of my magic and being a dragon rider and all of that. As far as what are the winning conditions, that depends on the individual campaign. How the players want to play. What kind of things would motivate a player in an Eragon campaign? Probably to be a dragon rider and to be cool. But I'm structuring the campaigns around, the guidance that I'm hoping to provide is to, just like with the books, send the players in the direction of achieving peace in the land, of having a positive influence. With the full knowledge that the players are probably going to disregard that and rampage across the land, but you know, you do your best. [26]
Writing a video game
We have a lot of writers who are engaging in the video game industry. For example, Elden Ring. Would you consider writing for a game in the future? I would love to do that someday. It would really depend on the project though and my time. [35]
Mechanical Keyboard Video
You might find a Bluetooth keyboard helpful for ipads and tablets. You can get folding ones too for travel. Already have one. I'm going to do a video on how to hack together an awesome mechanical keyboard for cheap. [T]
Illustrated Books
Along with the release of Murtagh we have the illustrated edition which came out at the same time. There is a new map here, from a fan. He did a version of this and posted it online, and I liked it so much I contacted him and said "well let's make a few tweaks, and if you are okay licensing it, let's do it", and so that's where this came from. So thank you Spencer. Oh that's cool. And do you have a favourite illustration? There's a couple of ones I really love. Hard to pick a favorite. I love the cover one. I love The Ra'zac in the cathedral at Dras Leona. There's one where it's multiple images that are sort of shattered of Brom and Saphira. There's Saphira in a snowy tree chasing a bird with Eragon near the beginning. It's really a lovely lovely book. [17]
It looks great. There is a kind of optimism in his art. A brilliance and joy that I like. [23]
I want a background for my PC created from the Battle under Farthen Dûr illustrated edition art. Would anybody know how to get a hi-res version of it? Even if I have to pay. I love the artwork for the scene so much. You could ping the artist on Instagram and see if he has an image you could use. He's usually pretty responsive. [R]
The first book that you released after your dry spell was not To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, it was an official Eragon coloring book. Yeah. Do you know how long it took to write that as well? I mean my God that was like 3 years of solid work. I didn't have to do the art, but just figuring out the words for a coloring book, it hurts. Do you think that coloring books are the key to curing writer's block, and do you recommend other bestselling fantasy authors struggling to publish a new book for the last decade to try this approach as well? Absolutely. Although, the thing is, is like I said, it was hard to write. If you're having trouble writing in general, you might find that tackling a coloring book actually sets you back even further, especially since some authors, not going to name names, don't have any discipline and would probably start doing a 10 book series in coloring books. But it was a rewarding experience. I really learned a lot as an author. And I've been able to apply that knowledge from the coloring book to my future books. Yeah, it's such a shame that Tolkien published so few books. Imagine what he could have accomplished if he put out a coloring book. Exactly, exactly. Of course, the problem with coloring books is they tend to be all black and white so it's very hard to get any shades of gray in your characters. [31]
Audiobooks and Malte Wegmann's Music
In the acknowledgements section you also talk about the soundtrack for the audiobook of "Murtagh", which is available online. I've listened to it. It's good isn't, it? It's pretty cool! Do you have a favourite track? I think the main theme actually. Although I saw that apparently the most played track off of that is actually the Nal Gorgoth theme, the village. But I love the main theme because it has a sort of ache to it, a bittersweet ache, which feels very appropriate for Murtagh and Thorn. I've worked with the composer Malte Wegmann a couple of times, he did music for the audiobook for To sleep in a Sea of Stars and then Fractal Noise. Fractal Noise might actually work better as an audiobook versus in print, because the whole concept of the story is that there's a repetitive sound being emitted by this artifact on the planet and the audiobook can capture that in ways that a book can't. Malte has really evolved as a composer. He started as a fan, he was composing little pieces of fan music for the Inheritance Cycle and releasing it online as part of what he called "The Inheritance Project". I heard bits and pieces and I loved it and he was willing to collaborate and work. Of course, we paid him. I don't take fan work for free. And now we've done this for three books in a row. [17]
I loved Murtagh. In fact, I'm listening to Malte Wegmann's work for the audiobook music right now, and it's really amazing. It both confirms and expands my understanding of the book. I don't know how much of a hand you had and how the pieces turned out in the end, but if you did, can you share what the collaboration process was like? Malte is a fan, and he started releasing Inheritance-inspired music even before To Sleep in a Sea of Stars came out. I saw it, I enjoyed it, and I saw him developing as a composer as he was going along. With To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, we really worked on making that a beautiful package, both in the print version and the audiobook. So I reached out to Malte and asked if he'd be interested in doing some music for the audiobook, which he did. And he's now done music for every book since then. So To Sleep, Fractal Noise, and now, Murtagh. The Fractal Noise audiobook is fantastic. There's sound effects through the whole thing. There's music. It's really quite the production. With Murtagh, Random House does not normally use music in their audiobooks, and they haven't really done it with the Inheritance Cycle. I think they might've used a little outro music in the past, but that's about it. So I told them, "I want to do this", and Malte came up with some initial sketches for pieces for each of the different sections in the book. And then I gave him my feedback. Some of them, he nailed them right off the bat. Others, he was in the general ballpark, and then I wanted to work with him to get it right where I wanted it for the world. I think one or two pieces we had to go around with quite a few times, like the main theme for Murtagh himself. I wanted something that felt both noble and yet aching at the same time, and also masculine, which felt important. Just kind of getting the right tone, the right feel, that was tricky, and Malte did it. He really did it. So I got to hand it to him. It's great feeling throughout. And assuming he's available and interested, I look forward to continuing to have his music in my audio books. [34]
Ah! Been hearing pieces of the music that Malte Wegmann is composing for the Murtagh audiobook. It's SO GOOD. I'm half tempted to listen to the audiobook myself! Have you ever listened to one of your audiobooks before? Only extracts. [T]
Close your eyes and listen to the main theme that Malte Wegmann composed for the Murtagh audiobook. And yes, he really captured the feel. (There's a lot more music throughout, btw.). [T]
The Original Movie
What was your favorite moment to see played out on the big screen? Well, none of my favorite moments made it onto the big screen, so... What I wanted to see was Saphira breaking the star sapphire in Tronjheim during the great battle. And that does not exist in the film that does not exist. That said, I'm an executive producer and co-writer on the show. So I've got my fingers in the pot pretty deeply. [33]
For all for all the jokes about the film, and I've said my share of them, it's not the worst film in the world. The problem is it's not a particularly good adaptation of Eragon, and that's where the disconnect happens. The budget on the film was actually ridiculously bigger than you would think watching the film. They spent a lot of money on the movie. It was huge. But behind the scenes it was a very difficult process with a lot of upheaval behind the scenes. It was the largest budget that that sub-studio of fox had ever worked with before. The biggest budget they'd worked with before that was Castaway, which I think was 80 million at the time, and most of that was Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks' salaries. It was something outside their wheelhouse. There was no one involved in the project who really loved the material. Perhaps it's unfair to have expected that. Because Eragon was so new, there wasn't the fan base that had grown up the way there is now. People didn't know where the story was going and the lore of Alagaësia did not exist to the degree it does now. But still, no one was ultimately in charge of the project who really liked the book on a deep level and I think that shows on the final product. Not enough to put you off trying again, which I think is very admirable. What's the alternative? You could just give up. You have to try. You have to try writing a book even if it doesn't work. You have to try making an adaptation even if it doesn't work. That's life. You fall flat on your face, you get up, you do it again. Was it always something that you wanted to see? Of course. I originally envisioned Eragon as a movie but there was no possible way to get that made as a kid, so I wrote it. [28]
What do you think of the film version of Eragon? It’s not a horrible film . . . but it's not a particularly good adaptation, and ultimately, that's the problem. Few of the things that people enjoy in my books are in the film. (As one example: you wouldn't even know that the books contained elves and dwarves, if you just watched the movie.) [22]
It was quite soon after Eragon became a success and I had little input. I think I had two phone calls from the director. I don't think it's a bad movie; it made good money. But the movie does not do justice to the book. [18]
What can fans expect from the upcoming Disney+ Eragon series? How will it differ from the movie adaptation? Hopefully, a tonally faithful adaptation that will bring the story, characters, and world to life in a way that readers respond to. As for how it’ll differ from the movie . . . ha! In every way, if I have anything to say about it. [8]
We're going back. I just can't in good conscience dedicate a whole subreddit to the movie and leave the books to the wayside! Hope everyone had a fun April Fool's day! Well darn. Focusing on the movie was the best thing that could have happened! :D [R]
The Movie was so inspirational, Christopher released multiple books in its image. Hey, ripping off a masterpiece such as that movie was my best career path. Don't judge. [R]

The Eragon Disney Plus Show

News
Any news on the Eragon show? Yes, but I can't tell you. :D [T]
Loosing the showrunner
The TV show for Eragon is in development at Disney. Hopefully we'll be having some news on that fairly soon. Can't say anything about some of these things until you can, but it is still in the works. It's hard to sit on stuff. It is. We had a showrunner lined up for Eragon and then the strike happened and everyone parted ways because the strike. Everyone's going off and doing different things. So it goes. [33]
So we're waiting for Disney to greenlight it, are we? What we're waiting for is some key personnel to get into place, specifically we need the showrunner. We had a number of people interested and we were talking with people and there was one person in particular that I thought was going to be a good fit, and then the writer strike happened. Now we're having to restart the process. [28]
Showrunner search
The TV show is in early development. We got stalled out because of the writers' strike. Basically we're looking for the showrunner. If we can't find the showrunner of the show won't happen. And it's a very short list of people who would qualify. Because you need someone who can run a big budget television show. Of which there are not many people. Someone who likes the subject material and wants to adapt it in a way that seems faithful. And someone who gets along with me and that I get along with them. Oh, and who is available. Because a lot of people who might qualify are under contract with that studio or that show. So we're looking and once we get that person hopefully then the show will actually start moving forward. [17]
And the thing is, it's a very short list of people who can take that position. For those who don't know, showrunners oversee an entire show. They may or may not direct any episodes, but they usually oversee the production and the writing. They often write many of the episodes or at least help. The list of people who can do that is A, small. There's only so many people who have the experience to run a big budget television show. B, it needs to be someone who likes the material and actually wants to adapt it in a way that is faithful to it. And C, gets along with me and I get along with them since we have to work together. So yeah, that's what we need to find. [28]
Timeline
When and if we get showrunner in place, and of course, everything's shut down in Hollywood because of the holidays right now, so hopefully beginning of the year we will actually be able to nail something down. When and if we get a showrunner on the show, then that person and I will write probably the pilot and maybe the first two episodes, or at least the pilot and the first episode. And then Disney will look at that and that's what they'll make the decision on whether or not to commit to a first season. And if they commit to the first season, they pull the lever on that, then we go full speed ahead. And then the whole machine kicks in in terms of pre-production and design and costumes and casting and music and directors and all of that. So getting to that point is the first big pump if you will, the first week the first big hill to climb. [19]
Writing Scripts
I'm currently working on a giant map and as for what I'm writing next, not quite sure. I'll decide once I'm done with the map. But it'll either be something in the World of Eragon or the Fractalverse, and I may have a screenplay I need to write posthaste so we shall see, but exciting stuff. [25]
I'm currently writing and have been for a couple of weeks now. And I can't tell you what I'm working on because it's for- it's for someone I can't talk-, it's something I can't talk about. So hopefully I will be able to talk about it. I can't talk about it quite yet, but y'all would be excited with it if I could tell you. As far as upcoming plans, what I'm working on now is not actually a book, but I hope to have a book out next year. [32]
The big monkey wrench in that is that the television show for Eragon and the television show for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars are both still alive and kicking. And more than, in fact. So I have contractual - Now I think I know what you're up to. To quote a wonderful British show, you might say that, but I couldn't possibly comment. I have contractual obligations on both of those shows, so I have to basically drop everything and do writing on them if required, which is a wonderful opportunity, of course, and it's one I want, but it does come with a price on the book side of things. It does, but it also comes with a lot of reassurance for readers and fans like me. What they did do with their recent Percy Jackson series I thought was pretty great. Bert Salke, who produces Percy Jackson, is also the producer on the Eragon adaptation. And he and Percy just got picked up for a second season. So we're all very happy with how that's done. You're like, "I can't talk about it. I can't talk about it." Well, we wish that you could. [32]
Were I to go back and re-edit or tweak those first two books, there's definitely some things that could use a little ironing out. I've been looking at the first book in depth for a project I'm currently working on which I can't talk about. And I can definitely see that was my first book. But at the same time, it's my best-selling book. [33]
Cancel Risk
Is this show still safe given the state of Hollywood and all the cuts and cancellations of projects we're seeing at the moment? It's tough times in Hollywood at the moment, but Eragon is safer than, say, Spiderwick. Unlike Spiderwick, Disney owns 100% of Eragon, and -- so far -- Disney isn't selling or cancelling stuff that they outright own. [R]
Making Changes
Do you feel because of your last previous experience, you have more of a determination to see your favorite parts come to life in this adaptation? Well, two things. Yes. More determination to see it be faithful to what made the story popular in the first place, because I wrote it for certain things and people responded to those things, so those things need to be in the story. But part two is that also having more time away from the actual writing of the books, I've had years and years to think about the story, and as a result, I've thought of a number of ways to streamline, condense, actually adapt it. And those thoughts that I've had, it only comes with time, no subsitute for that. So having some distance from the writing has actually helped in terms of figuring out how to actually adapt it in a successful manner. [33]
With TV, especially nowadays, you've got so much room to explore and actually explore the universe that you've created. Yes. The difficult thing with adapting a book is that books can show you very easily what's going on inside someone's head. Film and television are all external and so, even if I were 100% in charge of an adaptation and I had all the money in the world and all the time in the world and I could make it exactly the way I wanted to make it, there is no way to make it exactly the way it is in the book because you just can't. Then on top of that, the way I envision and see the characters and the world is probably different from how a lot of readers envision and see it, and that's something also that people don't always think about when they say "oh I wish the creator was in charge of the project". It's like when I first met Terry Brooks, the author of The Sword of Shanara, except he says it shan-ara. Which is his right and I totally respect that he wants to say it The Sword of Shan-ara, but no it’s The Sword of Sha-nara. [28]
Given your history with adaptations of your work, what's your current opinion on, especially recently with the Wheel of Time adaptation, of great Hollywood studios' relationship with creators, how they treat fantasy authors when it comes to the creative process of adaptation? I have to say the Wheel of Time adaptation was not successful for me personally. But Robert Jordan is also not alive. He was not there to participate in that adaptation. And there's a lot of difficulties with adaptation that apply to any project, not just sci-fi fantasy. One of them is that when you write a story, you go through this entire chain of thought that allows you to build the plot and the world and the characters. You explore a lot of avenues that don't work. And as a result, you end up creating whatever it is you create, and you have a whole list of reasons for why you create what you did create. When someone comes in to adapt your work, they haven't gone through that whole chain of thought. They're starting from the outside working in instead of starting from the inside working out. And thus, it can be very easy for someone adapting a book to say, "Well, why don't we change XY? Why don't we just do this?" Because they don't understand why that wouldn't work, because they haven't put in sometimes literally years of thought into why XYZ wouldn't work in this world or with these characters. So adaptation is difficult at best. Fantasy, I think is the hardest genre along with comedy in order to do successfully because if it's fantasy set in a fictitious world, you need to create the feeling in your audience that this is a different world. So accents need to be different. The costumes need to be appropriate. It needs to feel real, while also perhaps magical and mythical if you're going for a Tolkien-esque feel. Game of Thrones was successful because it was fairly realistic, and they stuck with that for the most part. The Rings of Power is a completely different approach. They went for the mythic, epic feel in a way that Game of Thrones really didn't. So it's difficult and some adaptations are more successful than others. I'm currently watching the Percy Jackson show. The main producer for Percy Jackson, Bert Salke, is also the producer on the Eragon show. And Rick Riordan has been very, very deeply involved with that adaptation. And my understanding is that it's very close to the books and it's been very successful so far. And then, of course, there are film examples of Twilight and Hunger Games and Harry Potter, which stuck to the books fairly closely and thus had quite a bit of success with the audience. Hopefully, that's the model for Eragon. And part of why I am going to be co-writing, is to make sure that the person I'm working with understands who the characters are, what's important to them, what's important to the world. And even if some things have to change in order to best present the story in a different medium, which is television, that feeling and that core of meaning is maintained, but it is a major challenge. [35]
Brom
There is a Disney Plus series that is in the very, very early stages. If you had all the power in the world, would you give Brom a little bit more time in the Disney Plus series? Probably. I've been joking we should cast Sean Bean because then he can meet an early demise. Originally, I wanted Sean Connery or Patrick Stewart. But I think we need someone a little more robust at the moment. I do love how different their vibes are. They are. Actually, Karl Urban could do it easy. He's getting crusty. [11]
Casting
Do you have any dream casting for the main characters? I had a couple of people I would have liked to have seen in certain roles, but they've aged out of those roles at this point. And I'm a little bit behind on the current crop of actors because of young kids and work. I'll say this, and this might sound a little woo-woo, but the hardest part with an adaptation is capturing a vibe. Because a story or a character gives you a certain feeling, and everyone gets a different feeling from it perhaps. But replicating that feeling in a different medium is extraordinarily difficult. And so I think that's why, especially when it comes to casting, you go in with a preconceived notion, but someone else comes in and auditions and if they have the right vibe for the character, the right feel for the character, it's like, okay, they're six inches taller than I thought and a hundred pounds heavier, but it doesn't matter because they feel like the character. That said, you wanna be generally in the ballpark, but there's a reason why they cast Hugh Jackman as Wolverine even though he's like a foot taller than the character in the comic books. Hugh could do anything. I love him. Sing, dance, everything. I'm not sure I'd cast him as a hobbit, but he could probably do it. Very difficult. He'd make a better wizard. Or Ranger. Hugh Jackman as Aragorn, that'd be interesting. I actually was at Comic-Con one time when he was walking around dressed as Wolverine and everyone thought he was just a cosplayer at first. And my God, in person, the guy was ripped to the bone, tall, very, very imposing person in person. [33]
Regarding the Disney adaptation, if I am only asking you personally and if you have all the liberties in the world, what qualities will you be looking for in the person incarnating Eragon, beyond of course a resemblance and good acting? Is there anything more? I'm not sure I'm willing to commit to an answer for that at the moment, because it's such a particular thing, and there are probably a number of people who could do a good job in the role, and it's a hard role to cast because it needs to be someone who can capture youth, but at the same time be old enough to be convincing in terms of wielding a sword and having adventures. I remember when I was 15 and I thought I was so grown up and now I see 15 year olds and I look at them and go, "they're babies! they're babies!" But they're not. Because you are in many ways mostly a grown up at that point, you're just not entirely grown up. So I don't know, I think it's gonna be a long conversation to have with the producers about exactly who we're looking for and what we're looking for and then we have to see who's available. Since you mentioned that you would like to have a new face for this role, do you think it would be a good thing, if possible, to make an open casting, even in Europe, as to find the best Eragon possible? I have no idea how Disney would want to handle this, so this may be completely out of my control. I know that when Fox was looking for an actor to play Eragon, and I again, I wasn't part of the process back then, and I only found out about this after the fact, but they auditioned some insane number of young actors for the role. It was well over 1,000, it might have been more like 10,000. It was just some insane number of actors and I know they were kind of despairing. So I think an open casting would be a great idea just to attract talent from around the world. I actually think an actor from Europe might be a good pick because one of the problems with casting actors from the US unfortunately is you get the American accent, which for good or for ill, none of us really associate with an old world style fantasy story. But again, all of this is going to have be in collaboration with the producers, with whoever the show runner is, and I will have my say, but that's one say out of at least three and possibly more people. [19]
Hear me out… Danny DeVito as Galbatorix. Danny DeVito as Arya. . Odd note: DeVito and I share a birthday. [R]
Cameos
When the movie that doesn't exist was not being made, they invited me out to the filming in Budapest. But I was on book tour at the time, so I couldn't do that. But they offered me a cameo, and I asked and they agreed that I could appear in the final battle as an Urgal, as the shortest Urgal ever, and that I could have my head chopped off on screen by Eragon. So that never happened, but maybe that'll get to happen with the television show. [35]
Disney Princess
Would Arya make the best Disney Princess? Yes! [Y]
Rides
If Disney built a ride based off the Inheritance Cycle, what would want it to be called? Dragonflight. [R]
Special Effects
Disney Plus for Eragon. I cannot wait. The only advantage with it taking this long to get an Eragon adaptation made after all these years is that every year that goes by, it becomes more and more possible to actually do justice to the material in terms of the special effects. We could not even have been having the conversation about a proper television show of Eragon in 2011, for example. When Game of Thrones started coming out, doing a dragon on television with any sort of realism was just incredibly expensive. And it's still expensive, but we can do that plus more for the same amount of money. So yeah. So definitely the special effects are going to be slick. They have to be. There's two ways you go in Hollywood these days. You can either go micro budget, or you really just have to go so big that it's sort of a tent pole, and you can actually get it made. The mid-budget stuff has all been relegated to television. But there is no way to do Eragon low budget and do it any justice. So it's one of those things where the studio has to buy in and say, we like the scripts, the fan base is there we're willing to spend a god-awful amount of money to make this happen. And to be fair, that's what they did with Percy Jackson. I've heard numbers, I don't think I can share them, but it was an extremely expensive show to make, as you might imagine, and special effects look great. [32]
J. Michael Straczynski
One of my other favorite properties would be Babylon 5, which managed to blend space elves and mythology with science fiction. It was one of those things where I bounced off it once or twice, and it's because it's so arc-based, and it was one of the first big shows to do that, you really have to sort of invest in it and really sign up for the long haul. And then the development of the characters and the world is surprisingly consistent. And that shouldn't be a surprise because J. Michael Straczynski wrote the vast majority of episodes himself, which has never been done before or since for a major show like that because it'd be insane to write all the episodes yourself. But I love the world building and I love the characters. And I think that one of the things that holds it back from perhaps a wider audience these days is the effects. They weren't preserved by the studio, so they looked better than they actually do now when they first aired. [Brandon Sanderson:] I almost got to make a show with Joe Michael Straczynski. Same, actually. I'll tell you the story off stage. Yeah, we don't have time for it right now, but got close. But things in Hollywood, everything's close. It may not have actually been that close. Everything's close, but nothing ever gets made. By the way, there are space wizards in Babylon 5. They're techno mages. [21]

The To Sleep in a Sea of Stars Show

Where can one keep up with the upcoming TSiaSoS show? No real news at the moment. Development got stalled out during the writers' strike. However, the project is still alive and moving forward. Things just take time in Hollywood. Lol. Also, switching from a film to a TV show took a lot more legal wrangling than we originally expected. [R]
To Sleep has been picked up as well, right? That was picked up even before it was published. Things often move slowly in Hollywood. And what happened was I worked on an adaptation for a film version of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. And it was like ten pounds stuffed in a one pound sack. The script was not horrible, but it was unwieldy. It just couldn't work as one story. So we decided to shift to a television adaptation, and that seems to suit the material quite well. But then we had to take a very large, complicated contract that had already been negotiated and renegotiate, not from scratch, but renegotiate to shift it into television format. And that's just complicated. There were a lot of moving pieces, and it just took a long time. My lawyer has to look at it, their lawyers have to look at it. They have to talk about this. It goes back, it goes forth. And then, of course, we had the writer's strike and other stuff. So I did write the pilot for that and the second episode. So those are actually in fairly good shape. I think the next step would be we're going to be starting to look for a director to package it with then hopefully that could actually start moving forward. So yeah, along with the books and the kids, I've been rather busy. I can imagine. Are we allowed to know what platform To Sleep is going to be on? We don't know yet at the moment. [32]
The Eragon TV show is under development at Disney Plus, and I'm hopeful we're going to have some news on that front before too long here. I think things are moving along there. And I'm actually revising episode two of the television show for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, which is also in development. Hopefully there's gonna be some news on both of those before too long. I hadn't heard about To Sleep in a Sea of Stars development. Yeah, it's been slow for a couple of reasons, but now the slowness has shifted, and now it's moving along pretty fast. [34]
I'm currently working on revisions for the second episode for television adaptation of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, which is my big sci-fi novel [35]
With all of the success and attention that Dune has had, has there been any interest in adapting To Sleep in a Sea of Stars? I'm currently editing/revising the script for episode #2 for the TV adaptation of To Sleep. [T]
Christopher what are you working on? I'm actually revising the second episode of the television show for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Still in early days but it is moving forward. [Y]

2024.05.05 14:02 Illmatic1990 Shattering the Frame: How AR and VR Redefine Artistic Engagement

Welcome to ScriptedSilicon, a community where the integration of technology and art is not just observed but actively discussed and explored. Today, we're diving into how Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are reshaping our engagement with art and narratives.

Breaking Boundaries in Art Perception

Historically, Western art has utilized metaphors like windows, mirrors, and frames, positioning the viewer as an outsider peering into a depicted scene. These metaphors inherently confine the viewer to a singular, static perspective. Even with the advent of film and video games, which offer dynamic experiences and multiple perspectives, the viewer's experience is still typically restricted within the bounds of a rectangular screen, maintaining a clear division between the viewer and the artwork.

The Role of Technology in Artistic Engagement

Technological advancements, especially in film and interactive media, have started to challenge these traditional bounds by offering multiple, successive viewpoints. Yet, the rectangular screen remains a central figure in these experiences, dictating the terms of engagement and keeping the artwork and the viewer separate.
Virtual Reality (VR) represents a significant departure from this traditional viewing experience. By immersing users directly into the digital environment, VR removes the barrier of the screen altogether, allowing a deeper, more personal connection with the artwork. This transformative experience shifts the viewer from an outside observer to an active participant within the artwork's space.
Augmented Reality (AR) takes this a step further by integrating digital enhancements into everyday objects, turning static images into interactive experiences. For example, the 2009 issue of Esquire magazine used AR to animate its cover with Robert Downey Jr., turning a static image into an engaging, dynamic experience. This marks a move towards more immersive forms of media that blend the physical with the digital.

The Evolution of Photographic Art

Digital photography has begun to embrace motion, merging photography, video, and animation. Techniques like cinemagraphs and features like Apple's Live Photos animate elements within still images, adding a dynamic quality and expanding their narrative potential.
The concept of Living Pictures pushes this innovation further by incorporating AR, creating enchanting visual experiences where static images come to life, reminiscent of the moving portraits in the Harry Potter series. This not only invites the viewer into a dynamically animated realm but also enhances the depth of cognitive engagement by encouraging an interactive, make-believe experience.

The Cognitive Play of Make-Believe

In visual communication, engaging in make-believe involves the viewer pretending to be present with the depicted objects, interacting with them as though they were physically tangible. This ranges from the rich, imaginative engagement found in Vermeer’s detailed interiors to simpler forms, such as schematic drawings or utilitarian images like anatomical illustrations, which all invite the viewer to interact with them as stand-ins for the real objects they represent.

The Role of AR and VR in Future Narrative Experiences

As AR technology advances, particularly with the potential integration of AR glasses, these interactions will become even more seamless and immersive, potentially allowing objects within our view to directly engage with us, offering personalized stories or information.
Discussion Questions:
  1. How does the removal of the traditional 'frame' in art through AR and VR technology change our relationship with artworks?
  2. In what ways do AR and VR challenge traditional narratives in art and enable new forms of storytelling?
  3. Can the immersive and interactive nature of AR and VR lead to a new understanding of what constitutes an artwork?
  4. How might future technological advancements in AR further enhance the viewer's engagement with art?
  5. What are the potential cultural implications of artworks that encourage active participation and make-believe?

2024.05.05 06:45 Arathemis A quote that stuck with me today

I was listening to Behind the Bastards episodes on the cult behavior that's sprung up around AI and within the tech industry while I was on a trip today. At the end of part 1, the host Robert Evans said something that hit me hard:
"...I also think about how part of why these(tech bros) are targeting creators, writers, actors, musicians, artists, pen and paper, and painting artists and stuff is because the only way out of this future they have envisioned is imagining one and making it real, right?
So if you can kill that ability, hand it over to the machines that you control, maybe you can stop them from this path of resistance."
That statement got to me because it resonated with the thoughts I've been having lately on the hate and bullshit being thrown at artists both here and on other online spaces.
With all that stupid fear marketing and cult rhetoric we see everyday such as "Adapt or be left behind", "you're impeding progress", or "AI is inevitable", the only purpose is to tell us that there's no point in fighting the future these greedy cocksuckers want for all of us. All of these jackasses need you, me, and any other person against this tech to give in because people who accept a bad future as inevitable don't fight back against it.
Well, I say fuck all that, and I don't think I'm alone. I have found comfort and hope in this community because you all help me see that people are pushing back against this bad future Altman and these other motherfuckers are trying to build off of everything they've stolen. Keep fighting against these tech companies and their swarms of AI Bro flunkies because they need us to believe we have no power.
And never stop imagining a better future and working to make it real.
