2024.05.14 23:50 Ok-Reflection1005 Should I be looking for any other tests or specialists?
Hi! What other diagnostic testing should be requested? I’m having a very hard time being taken seriously by my last few PCPs and am trying to push for further specialist referrals and tests. I have been very dismissed and feeling crazy. I even sought a psychiatrist thinking maybe all this was in my head after all and they have supported me in continuing to push for answers because I am in fact not crazy lol.
I’ve had the following done and come back normal, but wondering if there is anything else my PCP should check before ruling out lupus definitively.
Came back normal-
CBC, metabolic panels repeated 2021-2024
2022- ANA
2024- rheumatoid factor Cyclic certificates peptide DNA DS antibody Chromatin neucleosomal antibody Complement components c3c and c4c Sed rate by modified westergren Complete abdomenal ultrasound Vitamin D, B12, Iron, Ferritin
Came back abnormal- 2022-2024 antiphospholipid antibodies B2 glycoprotein IGM high
2024- head mri with/ without contrast- few white matter lesions and scarring
2023- HLA- DQ8 genetic variant confirmed
I’ve got a whole host of symptoms that are both lupus and other auto immune specific. These include: Brain fog Extreme fatigue Memory issues Intermittent Butterfly and raised skin rash Feeling like I’m sunburnt even after only a few minutes outside Intermittent hearing issues Intermittent balance/ coordination issues Severe skin breakouts, digestive issues Constant illness Joint pain Swollen sore hands Numbness and tingling hands and feet Bladder retention and emptying issues Choking/ swallowing issues, chronic cough Pinpoint burning or itching sensation Since I was young, but now increasing again: “aura” like migraine or seizure aura without any headache or obvious seizure activity. Only other way I can explain this is “Alice in wonderland syndrome” (see fastfeeling)
My doctor has questioned SLE, MS but not really super conclusively. I also have wondered if celiac could be a factor but was informed after ANA testing that I may not have been eating gluten in my diet long enough for it to show other than the genetic test (usually avoid gluten by chance). I also have not yet heard back from my PCP on the results of the MRI- these findings were taken directly from the report uploaded in my patient portal. My family history is questionable as my mom was adopted, no one in my family really goes to the dr. Only Cancers and brain tumors have been confirmed. The most troublesome issues as of late are the cognitive issues and my hearing going out. It’s a few minutes or a few hours one ear at a time, pressure and muffled hearing. Any thoughts are appreciated, as I am exhausted

I like decorate your own tea cup. I like darts in a rabbit hole. I was thinking pin the Cheshire smile on the cat with a blindfold. I want to be playing Alice in wonderland on the television behind. It’s indoors in a clubhouse so I can’t do croquet (but I would if I could). I have an Alice in wonderland Cornhole. I want to buy an Alice in wonderland chess set but it seems too expensive.

Writing this for folks whose home park is OG Disneyland and are considering or planning a trip to DLP. Whether that's you or you're looking for advice in the opposite direction, feel free to AMA!
I wrote up some aspects of my trip in this post, for reference. For context, I visit Anaheim a few times a year for 2-3 days each -- sometimes alone, sometimes with others -- and have been to Walt Disney World a handful of times (mostly for a single day while visiting my in-laws in the Orlando area).
Stow yer weapons: this is gonna be long. I'll talk atmosphere, attractions, food and drinks, and tips geared toward this audience. (I won't cover shows or character greetings, since they're not really my thing.)
Atmosphere:
Disneyland Paris is widely regarded as the most beautiful of the castle parks, and I agree. The attention to detail is stunning, from the horticulture to the rock work to the stained glass in the castle. The land transitions are smooth and beautifully executed, and the park generally feels more deliberately planned (probably since it wasn't built in a year and haphazardly swapping parts for the next seventy, like DLCA).
The park is bigger than Anaheim's, probably close to Magic Kingdom size, so add a minute or two to your commute time when crossing from one end to the other.
Some can't-miss experiences and details unique to DLP (skipping the rides since I'll cover those next, but including walk-throughs):
MAIN STREET
Some comparisons and contrasts. Didn't ride everything (e.g. carousel, teacups, Autopia), so I'll just share notes on the ones I did.
Big Thunder: Best version I've been on, period. It's on an island, so you plunge in and out of the darkness to get there, and the seats are actually divided so you're not body-slamming the person next to you every time you careen around a corner. Don't sleep on the detail and theming! Only bummer: no goat trick.
Pirates: Great queue: caves and little sneak peeks into scenes. Caribbean themed instead of bayou, restaurant included. Different structure and order of scenes, and frankly sort of confusing (e.g. Jack Sparrow is on the treasure pile among the skeleton tableaux for his little monologue). The sword fighting scene is unique to DLP (I think).
Fantasyland dark rides: Pinocchio is almost exactly the same as in CA. Snow White is more like the pre-COVID version, but even creepier; it's definitely the most divergent from the current CA version. Peter Pan is close to its CA version, but feels slightly larger?
Small World: More granular Europe, cute America section, generally quite different in layout. White-clad finale is a fair with a Ferris wheel and such.
Haunted Mansion/Phantom Manor: Identical ride track and Doom Buggies, but totally different storyline and different tableaux, particularly at the finale, which is a Western town instead of a graveyard. They don't put scrims in front of the frontier town zombies, which makes them creepier somehow. It's a unique take and a must-do.
Space Mountain: This one blows ours out of the water. Catapult launch, several inversions, much faster and darker. Be aware they don't have pouches for your stuff and will instruct you to put it on the floor. I stepped on the strap of my bag because I was certain I was gonna lose it.
Star Tours: Identical, though one time I got narration in English and the other time in French. May be randomized?
Railroad: No primeval world but they do have their own Grand Canyon. Circle tour is a must; you cover completely different ground and get a great pano of the whole park. My train was in compartments rather than long cars.
Indiana Jones: This is not the Jeep tour by any stretch; it's an outdoor roller coster that rattled my teeth out of my head. Think an extreme version of Goofy's Sky School with the unbanked turns. KEEP YOUR HEAD BACK. And even then, don't be surprised if you get off with sore ears and a buzzy headache that last a few minutes.
Food and Drinks:
I talked extensively about this in my other post, so I'll just note a couple of comparisons.
I have a lot of good news for Californians, because Paris is a cakewalk in comparison. I'm sure I hit a slower period, but it's so easy to go with the flow without playing nine-dimensional chess on your phone every three minutes.

- The arcades on either side. Don't miss either of them! I enjoy the Discovery side with steampunk visions of cities in the future.
- If you can tour Walt's, do: the salons are themed by original lands and are charming. The home goods store named after Lily also has some nice turn-of-the-century fixtures and creative interior design.
- The dragon. I mean, it's a dragon under the castle that snorts smoke!
- Shop interiors, especially Snow White and the Merlin shop. The beanstalk was closed when I was there, sadly.
- Cinderella's glass carriage near the Auberge.
- Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Do the walk-through. Eyvind Earle would be proud. The rectangular topiaries are a nice touch.
- The Alice in Wonderland labyrinth! Charming surprises, a true dead end, and a climb to a super neat park view in the center.
- The marketplace and Aladdin cave. Reminiscent of the Morocco pavilion at Epcot (sadly, I haven't been to Morocco). The restaurant has a very cool lived-in market look if you can take a peek inside. Even the windows have faux Maltese balconies/muxrabija and hanging wares.
- Adventure Isle. It's basically their version of Tom Sawyer's Island, so you can clamber through caves, look through Skull Rock, run around a pirate ship, and generally pretend you're eight. Genuinely photo-worthy.
- Peek into their version of the Golden Horseshoe. It may not be a replica of Calamity Jane's, like ours, but it's handsome and bigger.
- Phantom Manor's horticultural and exterior design. There's just more space for cool themed plants, and the queue design gives you time to admire them.
- Steampunk everything! This is where we got our Astro-Orbiter and our short-lived, ill-fated redesign from the late 90s. It looks way better on them.
- The submarine walk through is really fun. Not sure how much it resembles the original walk-through from 50s Disneyland, but it's a low-key and visually rich treat, especially when it's sunny out.

- Alcohol is more widely available in the Paris park, akin to DCA. Your best bet is wine or a kir (or a beer, if you prefer) unless you're at a place with a dedicated cocktail menu.
- The little stalls across from Small World serve things like ham and gruyère sandwiches and gauffres and sweets, with beer and wine available. Meh by Paris standards, but decent snacks that you wouldn't find in Anaheim.
- Unique themed dining. Captain Jack's has sub-par food, but if you're a fan of the Blue Bayou, it may be worth it just for the Caribbean nighttime theming. Boats floating by, and a more defined/secluded space than the sea of tables at BB. (Who goes to BB for the food anyway?) Agrabah restaurant has the most divergent theming and food from anything you can get in DLR.
I have a lot of good news for Californians, because Paris is a cakewalk in comparison. I'm sure I hit a slower period, but it's so easy to go with the flow without playing nine-dimensional chess on your phone every three minutes.
- Stay at a hotel on campus! The great news is that the hotels, parks and shops are after security, so you won't have to leave the bubble for your whole trip. Say goodbye to waiting in line for bag check behind one billion strollers every morning. If you're staying in the DLH (covered in my other post), you basically roll out of bed and through the turnstiles.
- Early entry was EMPTY, and since it was 8:30 instead of 7-7:30, it felt downright luxurious. Hit those Fantasyland rides like they're going out of style. I hit Peter Pan twice before 8:40. That one does fill up later and skipping the line costs an absurd amount of money, so morning is your best bet. Not everything is open for extra magic hour, though, so do check your map.
- The park is significantly bigger and you're going to do a lot of walking. It's not as easy to jump from point to point in rapid succession as in our little jewel of a park. Plan accordingly.
- That said, take the time to really slow down and enjoy your surroundings. No need to travel halfway across the world just to bang out a bunch of rides. It's fun to check out the beautifully executed transitions (John Hench would be proud). There's even a list of horticultural treasures within the app.
- Express pass is way easier than Genie Plus. I don't recommend getting the full day; the one day I did it, I failed to break even on what I would have spent skipping the line for individual rides. Get it for the rides you want if the line looks too steep for you. They're generally valid either immediately or within 5 minutes.

2024.05.14 17:10 Status-Willow-7917 Finished Wonderland and received gummy piece but no new world populated?
So this is my first time playing Kingdom Hearts in like 20+ years and I just started. I recently completed Wonderland and got the gummy piece from the door knob, cut scene said return to gummy ship to start looking for Alice but the only worlds on the map are Wonderland and Traverse Town?? Wonderland also has a key hole next to the name?
I've looked through forums, Youtube channels and everything I can think of but can't find an answer, can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Back in the good old days, my older sister used to describe how when she got really angry at someone she felt like she was much taller than them and they looked really, really small in her sight. I guess this was a way for her not to feel threatened by them and to take them on for example if they messed with one of her kids. So it turns out that there is this condition called Alice in Wonderland syndrome which might explain this phenomenon.

I remember my introduction to the existence of backing tracks. I was at a goth/industrial show and the opening band had to cut their set to about half a song. Because the cd player handling the backing tracks failed. I have seen goth bands tour my city and the first show had a full band. The next show had a missing bassist who had now been absorbed into the backing track. It felt like Alice in Wonderland but lame. Many shows I see people freaking out over are literally just a karaoke show with a keyboard playing single notes.
I understand it isn't easy to tour in this economic climate and make sure everybody gets paid decent, but it's reaching the point where I think the audience have lowered their own standards to accommodate what they are oversaturated with. Curious what other people think based on shows they have been to.

Note: SINoALICE lore is confusing and there’s just straight up multiple different versions of Snow White. I’m getting all my information from what I believe is the main incarnation of the character (Character Descriptions of the original classes, and the Main Story of SINoALICEWhy are you debunking yourself not even a minute into your connections list. Are you stupid? Also, I am absolutely prepared to yap back, so you’re the one who should be taking caution Core Theme: Two similarly named characters who fight for justice by taking down those who are evil after the loss of those close to them. As their journeys progress, both will struggle with being their ideal selves, and be filled with self-doubt. However, there’s a very notable contrast with their paths of justice and how they handle their flaws.You’re already putting these connections on your connections list anyways, so I don’t have to debunk this part at all Two major characters in series that are darker takes of their respective genres (Magical Girls/Fairy Tales) with the two taking direct inspiration from those older media (MGRP Snow White’s design is based on classic magical girl outfits/SoA Snow White is literally a stand in for the Snow White in the original fairy tale)First connection in and there’s already so much wrong here. First of all, Magical Girls and Fairy Tales are not similar in the slightest. Second of all, bro have you seen magical girl and fairy tale shit dude. This weird girl named Minky Mono literally gets hit by a truck and in the original Snow White, The Prince literally orders the Queen to wear a pair of red-hot iron slippers and to dance in them until she drops dead. Those both are so much darker than whatever you’re trying to say here. And lastly (Yes I’m still not done yet), comparing clothing to in your words “literally a stand in for the Snow White in the original fairy tale” What an absolutely comparable connection They were initially naive, believing in the good in others despite the many times they’ve been proven wrong (MGRP Snow White believed that magical girls were pure, righteous champions of justice, even as the death game was ongoing and after she’d been attacked multiple times by other magical girls/SoA Snow White didn’t recognize the seven dwarves treating her like a slave, and even after her mother tried to kill her, she still wanted to forgive her)This one isn’t too bad, since at the very least you’re comparing people that tried to kill both, but then you decided to put slavery into this one, really? However, their breaking point would come after the deaths of those they were close to (La Pucelle and Hardgore Alice/The Prince). Both would blame themselves for these incidents (MGRP Snow White would believe that she was useless as she didn’t take any action that could’ve prevented these incidents/SoA Snow White would blame herself for letting the death of her prince occur, exclaiming that she’ll never forgive what happened)Okay and now we’re back to the bad stuff. See, MagicalMusical1 uses “those they were close to” to hide how incomparable these people are. The Prince is literally her lover and husband, while La Pucelle and Hardgore Alice are just her friends. From there, both would swear to use their strong senses of justice to never let these events happen ever again, deciding to go out and defeat those who are evil to make the world a better place (MGRP Snow White taking it upon herself to capture rogue magical girls/SoA Snow White swearing to punish all evil and enforce justice).Erm, actually one is only fighting a certain type of person while the other is punishing all evil. This isn’t comparable in the slightest Their personalities shift into stoic fighters who are ruthless to their enemies, yet still kind to those they consider allies.Generic as fuck. While we would never directly see these characters administer their justice (It is only stated that MGRP Snow White was able to capture around 30 rogue magical girls/It’s implied that SoA Snow White ruled over her nation as an good enforcer of justice and changed some endings of stories for the better), we will see their paths changing as they go on a journey for another person important to them. (MGRP Snow White goes around trying to look for any clues regarding the whereabouts of Ripple/SoA Snow White goes around killing nightmares in order to revive her authors, The Grimm Brothers)Firstly, MagicalMusical I know that you don’t actually have the evidence that SoA Snow White ruled her nation as a good enforcer of justice and only are getting that from her TV Tropes page. Secondly, bro why are you doing the “person important to them” shit again. The Grimm Brothers are literally SoA Snow Whites’ creators while Ripple is just MGRP Snow White’s friend. On these new paths, they try to hold on to their ideals, but over time, their flaws become apparent, and they begin to doubt themselves. (MGRP Snow White continues to get roped up into deadly situations but unable to save everyone like she wants to, causing her to not believe herself to be deserving of her title of Magical Girl HunteSoA Snow White begins to doubt her justice as she continues the immoral path of killing sentient and potentially innocent beings in order to achieve her goal, with the voices of those she killed haunting her)Ah yes, one is regretting not saving enough people while the other is regretting killing. I can absolutely see the connection there (Breaking character for a moment, holy shit that’s actually another badass contrast this matchup has now that I think about it.) Extra connections that aren’t really about major story beats/are kinda a stretch thanks to the aforementioned multiple different versions of SoA Snow White in the main story, but still interesting to note the coincidental similarities these two share:Again, please stop debunking yourself in your own connections list please. And these aren’t even safe either. Both deal with manipulative mascot-type characters that try to drive both, and other characters like them to kill each other. (Fav, manipulating the events of Unmarked to turn it into a magical girl death exam/Parrah and Noya, who force the cast kill each other, most notably in Act of Elimination)Parrah and Noya are puppets, please tell me where the “mascot-type” comes from. While initially put off by these characters at first, both would eventually have a friendship with an Alice in Wonderland inspired character with a darker color scheme and a theme of obsession (Hardgore Alice, who is very focused on being with Snow White and protecting heAlice, who has a theme of bondage and feels heavily attached to her author)Okay, not only are these characters obsessed with two different people, but one’s named Alice and the other is named Hardgore Alice. Completely incomparable. Both are noted to be very beautiful (Magical Girls in MGRP are described to be “too beautiful to be human”/SoA Snow White, similarly to the story she’s based on, has incredible beauty that mesmerized everyone in her country)Bro this connection is so generic that I literally cannot find anything to debunk about it. Both would eventually be reunited with the person they were looking for, only for an unforeseen event to occur that caused them to lose said important person once again and cause the two to be broken once again (MGRP Snow White would be able to find Ripple, but in her mind control we state, Ripple would kill someone and run away once the mind control wore off, leaving MGRP Snow White to feel helpless and lose hope for a moment/SoA Snow White eventually revives her author in Act of Authors, only for Henrietta Dorothea Wild to be revived instead, and after Snow White killed her, her justice was put into question, leading to herself falling into despair)Okay, I already said how the important people here aren’t comparable so I'll just say that MGRP Snow White’s friend is killing someone while SoA Snow White is the one doing the killing. In different points in their stories, both get involved with deadly mobile games with the same name as their series. (The death exam that MGRP Snow White would be involved with would begin due to the Magical Girl Raising Project mobile game/Act of SINoALICE takes place in the real world, with the characters having to deal with nightmares that spawned due to the in-universe SINoALICE mobile game)The death exam happens in the beginning of MGRP Snow White’s story while Act of SINoALICE happens near the end of SoA Snow White’s story. Unsure about this one yet as MGRP: Red isn’t translated yet, but from what I’ve heard, both would battle, and lose, to another version of themselves who has less qualms with killing (Homunculus Snow White/Reality Snow White)I’m skipping this one too as I haven’t read MGRP: Red either. It’s probably wrong tho. Both have a connection to Batman of all characters (MGRP Snow White has been called the Batman of Magical Girls by the fanbase due to her backstory and the fact that she has a supercomputer assistant mascot/SINoALICE did a collab with DC Comics, with Snow White getting a class where she dressed as Batman) (Yeah this is a huge stretch, but the fact that you can make this stretch at all is the funniest thing ever)Damn all three of these connections are actually solid (especially the Batman one) I have nothing to say here Contrasts:What? These aren’t connections. I don’t have anything to say here because the only thing that really matters are connections. So that’s all for the connections, but the potential is bad as well. There’s literally no reason why MGRP Snow White wouldn’t just ignore SoA Snow White, and I don’t see why SoA Snow White would care about MGRP Snow White since she didn’t really care about Reality Snow White in Act of Elimination. And the fight potential reeks as well, you’re taking SoA Snow White, a character with swords, bows, polearms, hammers, orbs, instruments, books, staffs, literal nightmares, against someone with only one weapon and then MagicalMusical1 then tries to say that Half-Nightmare Snow White will be used in the fight when that’s never happened in the main story of SINoALICE. Debate:I’m skipping this. I literally do now know what MagicalMusical1 is yapping about here. So in conclusion, aside from debatability this matchup literally appeals to me on all fronts. A combination of good and funny connections, coupled with an amazing contrast. Interesting dynamics in both the fight and interactions. The potential for a very emotional story. And it uses obscure series and characters, one of whom is my favorite fictional character of all time and the other is also a strong contender. Yeah in my opinion this matchup is peak.Nah bro, in conclusion this matchup sucks. It has bad connections, bad potential, and I forgot to say anything about the story but that probably sucks as well. And you’re using two obscure characters that will never be on Death Battle in the first place, so why even bother? So no, this matchup isn’t peak at all. Besides, both have better anyways with Snow White vs Madoka Kaname and Snow White vs Kafka Hibano …What the fuck did I just write? |

There’s this quote from the movie ratatouille that always comes back to me whenever I get too vitriolic with my criticism of any media.
“In the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism deeming it so.” – Antoine Ego
Of course criticism is valid and this shouldn’t hinder us from doing it, but if you really think about it, us critics, especially internet critics, just sit back and spew nonsense about “bad writing” and “media Literacy”, when most of us have never even attempted to write a story.
Why do I say this?
Just to preface some thoughts I had about Dear anemone, a manga that is on its way to getting axed in shonen jump almost certainly. Lots of threads on the series talk about poor writing, and bad choices, that’s all fine….but I thought instead, lets take the perspective of the mangaka for a second….and see how our criticisms might seem from the perspective of being a mangaka in Jump.
What prompted this was the report that Rin matsui had deleted mentions of dear anemone on his own twitter account, which really hit me. Something about his art not even being recognised just made me feel sad.

I couldn’t do it. Most cant. This doesn’t require sympathy on its own merits…. lots of jobs are hard, but goddamn must it be stressful.
Most reading this are either familiar with or have watched or read bakuman. Much of our knowledge of how shueisha works comes from this series. Some of it is outdated, much of it apparently true, but regardless…it establishes much of our “insider” knowledge of being a mangaka.
Details aside, the difference between bakuman and reality is that it is a story…obviously. But because it’s a story, we know that there is going to be a happy ending, a catharsis. He will get the girl and write the manga that becomes an anime yadda yadda. Hardship is character growth, narrative setup. Real life is not so kind….you might fail and never succeed and have your dreams taken away from you.
Lets paint a picture.
Rin matsui is in his early 20s. He does a one shot for dear anemone, while he is an assistant on my hero academia. He looks forward to his big shot and gets it. It a battle horror manga, not a common genre. He gets to serialization. His dreams come true…he is in shonen jump.
He gets the ranking back the next day or so, ( we only have the toc to go by, not an exact rank, and this is assuming the 7 week rule applies somewhat) and he ranks relatively low. A death sentence almost from the start. People online see the first ranking(much later mind you so he has to wait months knowing its coming) and scream DOA. It should have done x or y or would have worked in a seinen magazine. Weve heard all the arguments. They are blase at best, often repeating the same thing.
Maybe he frequents sites like 5ch and 2ch, and sees people ripping it apart by the second chapter. Talking about the similar looking characters, and meandering plot, and lack of intrigue. “God some of those criticism online are pedantic and infuriating, even if they have a point” is what I would think if I were him. Im not him though.
Heres some context as well. Rin matsui is doing the artwork with ink and paper, not digitally. He chose to do absurdly detailed art this way when most others in the magazine use a computer. Some might call this stupid, some might be more impressed….but the few weeks he missed his page counts make sense in light of this. Most people don’t know this though.
And then you have to hear people calling you “lazy” or “not ready” online.
And of course, by his second or third week, he was probably already aware he was likely getting axed…even if it wasnt official yet. Actually imagine what it must feel like to write a story knowing you have already failed by the time you just started.
I Couldn’t do it.
Most people can spend a lifetime learning art or storytelling, let alone both. Mangakas have to be competent at both disciplines, and combine them as well. Novelists can focus on just their writing, artists on their form and composition, but no….a mangaka needs to know both.
Which is why criticism can often seem misinformed, disingenuous and cynical to the point of being useless. Here are some fancy schmancy “critical thoughts”
“Dear anemone has a fascinating premise that invokes the terror of nature to create a visceral tone of body horror rarely seen in Jump. However, it doesn’t leverage this premise very well after the first chapter, ditching its horror elements and becoming a traditional battle manga by the second chapter. Moreover, its characters lack interesting motivations, are hard to distinguish from a visual perspective and even though the art is stunning, it can be hard to track what is happening at times.
It sets up mysteries and intrigue, but resolves many of them a few chapters in, undermining the strength of its own premise. In Terms of plotting, it seems to just drag the protagonist along on events rather than him having agency in the plot, and the lack of characterisation for the side characters amplifies the degree to which this feels like marionettes being led by a storyteller, rather than an organic character led tale.
A few interesting twists were introduced later on, the other characters were also hybrid creatures, which explains perhaps why they were underdeveloped at first, maybe this is now a battle royale….. but the twist came too late. The problem is there is no sense of overarching narrative progression. We reached the lab by the third chapter, spent a few more there introducing antagonists instead of fleshing out main characters, and then got the data we were looking for in the most anticlimactic way, which did nothing to change the complexion of the plot. Imagine if the basement in attack on titan was this uneventful……”
Where is this criticism from?
Well….its mine. If I am doing this exercise I might as well be self- critical. This sound fine and dandy but really pay attention to this criticism. Its nothing original, it’s just fanciful speech reiterating points others have made but consolidating it into one passage.
What is actual constructive criticism? Its criticism as a form of kindness…that tries to meet a work for what it is and yearns for it to be the best version of itself. Its not like the passage above… a cynical kind of distanced critique that pretends to understand narrative and art. Instead…. it has humility. To do this you have to have empathy yes…but also insight, genuine literacy at art and writing. That passage written by me, is frankly useless. Junk not worth the effort put in by Rin matsui no matter how many issues Dear anemone has.
And this only really hit me when I saw he removed mention of dear anemone from his twitter.
This isnt a pity party, im sure they wouldnt want it either…. this is what they signed up for. There is a three strike rule apparently, again another piece of “knowledge” from bakuman. And it does happen, Horikoshi from MHA only struck it big on his third serialization. People grow and change and hone their craft.
But we can just say this, they have to actually go out and do it. Face the circus again when they had a failed serialization. This takes guts in itself. Fusai Naba came back with Kyokute Necromance after aliens area within 2 years ….a quick turnaround. What is he met with?
“Its too soon, his writing is still mediocre, not another damn exorcist manga(I’m guilty of this), the lead character doesn’t stand out, the plotting of the first chapters is a little dry, it was boring, its tries too hard” etc etc
Yet he still came back and is facing the music, choosing a safer theme which makes sense, and is on twitter happy he is back, and even heralded as the author of aliens area. It wasnt pushed under the rug. We call it axed, but shueisha doesn’t actually frame it that way, it was just a completed serialization. The series has fans ….pretty good for “failed art”

Yes I can say I hope he comes back, and I look forward to his next work, and he improves at his craft, but more than that….I hope dear anemone is acknowledged for what it is…with all its flaws. Art isnt just a product, it’s a process….a living testament to the blood, sweat and tears an artist puts out into the world that documents a journey only one person has ever been through. I don’t know whats going through Rin Matsuis head….but all I can say is that his work is more meaningful than the words we use to critique it ever will be.
I hope he sees that too.

“Good” Criticisms of Dear Anemone….or why being constructively critical is hard unless you know what you are talking about.
Being a mangaka is hard in another sense. It is technically hard. You have to be good at both Art and storytelling.Most people can spend a lifetime learning art or storytelling, let alone both. Mangakas have to be competent at both disciplines, and combine them as well. Novelists can focus on just their writing, artists on their form and composition, but no….a mangaka needs to know both.
Which is why criticism can often seem misinformed, disingenuous and cynical to the point of being useless. Here are some fancy schmancy “critical thoughts”
“Dear anemone has a fascinating premise that invokes the terror of nature to create a visceral tone of body horror rarely seen in Jump. However, it doesn’t leverage this premise very well after the first chapter, ditching its horror elements and becoming a traditional battle manga by the second chapter. Moreover, its characters lack interesting motivations, are hard to distinguish from a visual perspective and even though the art is stunning, it can be hard to track what is happening at times.
It sets up mysteries and intrigue, but resolves many of them a few chapters in, undermining the strength of its own premise. In Terms of plotting, it seems to just drag the protagonist along on events rather than him having agency in the plot, and the lack of characterisation for the side characters amplifies the degree to which this feels like marionettes being led by a storyteller, rather than an organic character led tale.
A few interesting twists were introduced later on, the other characters were also hybrid creatures, which explains perhaps why they were underdeveloped at first, maybe this is now a battle royale….. but the twist came too late. The problem is there is no sense of overarching narrative progression. We reached the lab by the third chapter, spent a few more there introducing antagonists instead of fleshing out main characters, and then got the data we were looking for in the most anticlimactic way, which did nothing to change the complexion of the plot. Imagine if the basement in attack on titan was this uneventful……”
Where is this criticism from?
Well….its mine. If I am doing this exercise I might as well be self- critical. This sound fine and dandy but really pay attention to this criticism. Its nothing original, it’s just fanciful speech reiterating points others have made but consolidating it into one passage.
What is actual constructive criticism? Its criticism as a form of kindness…that tries to meet a work for what it is and yearns for it to be the best version of itself. Its not like the passage above… a cynical kind of distanced critique that pretends to understand narrative and art. Instead…. it has humility. To do this you have to have empathy yes…but also insight, genuine literacy at art and writing. That passage written by me, is frankly useless. Junk not worth the effort put in by Rin matsui no matter how many issues Dear anemone has.
And this only really hit me when I saw he removed mention of dear anemone from his twitter.
“Im sure they will come back in the future, and I look forward to their next work!”
How many times have we heard this platitude? The fact that its true doesn’t make it less platitudinous, but regardless, this is how most threads compassionate about the hardship about being a mangaka go when news of an axed serialization comes out. We saw it with mamayuyu, phantom seer, red hood….rookies trying to make it big and that have talent, but just lacked that special something to make things click.This isnt a pity party, im sure they wouldnt want it either…. this is what they signed up for. There is a three strike rule apparently, again another piece of “knowledge” from bakuman. And it does happen, Horikoshi from MHA only struck it big on his third serialization. People grow and change and hone their craft.
But we can just say this, they have to actually go out and do it. Face the circus again when they had a failed serialization. This takes guts in itself. Fusai Naba came back with Kyokute Necromance after aliens area within 2 years ….a quick turnaround. What is he met with?
“Its too soon, his writing is still mediocre, not another damn exorcist manga(I’m guilty of this), the lead character doesn’t stand out, the plotting of the first chapters is a little dry, it was boring, its tries too hard” etc etc
Yet he still came back and is facing the music, choosing a safer theme which makes sense, and is on twitter happy he is back, and even heralded as the author of aliens area. It wasnt pushed under the rug. We call it axed, but shueisha doesn’t actually frame it that way, it was just a completed serialization. The series has fans ….pretty good for “failed art”

I’m not going to be so pretentious so as to presume to be able do the kind of critique any artist deserves, but in an optimistic twist of fate, right after a time skip chapter that usually signals a mangas inevitable end(into a bizarre alice in wonderland esque twist ….what are you cooking mr matsui?), Rin Matsui tweeted about dear anemone again.https://twitter.com/ELECTRO_RING/status/1789771892062027803

I thought the least I could do is respect his wishes.

And so all I can hope for with dear anemone and Rin Matsui is that he recognize his own talent. Yes I can say I hope he comes back, and I look forward to his next work, and he improves at his craft, but more than that….I hope dear anemone is acknowledged for what it is…with all its flaws. Art isnt just a product, it’s a process….a living testament to the blood, sweat and tears an artist puts out into the world that documents a journey only one person has ever been through. I don’t know whats going through Rin Matsuis head….but all I can say is that his work is more meaningful than the words we use to critique it ever will be.
I hope he sees that too.

I have a few very vague memories of an aunt playing a video game on her laptop. I'm 18 now and was 7 at the oldest then, so I apologize for the very small amount of information. And take everything with a grain of salt, little me wasn't really expecting to be trying to find this game 11+ years later, lol.
From what I remember, the game was either pixelart or very low poly. The main character you play as was a younger (?) girl that reminded me of Alice. Blonde + blue dress with a lighter blue on the front of the dress, I think. The game had a dark fantasy aesthetic. I remember one specific scene where the main character was looking for some item, I think a newspaper. To get that item you had to open an outhouse (?) or some other kind of small wooden structure, where some creature would jump out and run passed you. If I remember right you usually had to fight them, but this one just ran. In my mind the head of that creature looks like the head of the b-1 series battle droids from starwars. Long, non-human and non-natural. I think it was either brown or gray, could be mistaken. At another point I think you had to find a key? Maybe those two events went together. It was mostly 3rd person with some scenes that were first person, like when interacting with things.
I've tried looking for this online before, and the only result I got was Alice: madness returns, but I'm positive that's not it. I also don't think it's American McGee's Alice. I wish I could remember more. Thanks in advance for any comments!
